Justin's Bio

I'm a 21 year old student at The Ohio State University. I grew up in Danville, CA about 40 minutes east of San Francisco so I'm a Bay Area sports fan. My main teams are the San Jose Sharks and Oakland A's. I also follow the Raiders and 49'ers and love to see the Giants lose, especially when Barry Zito is pitching. I've played hockey since I was 7 years old and hockey is my favorite sport, followed closely by baseball. I was also the director of baseball operations at UC Santa Barbara last year and learned a lot about the game. I'm majoring in business and looking to get into OSU's sports management masters program after I graduate. I'm just doing this for fun and to have a place to post my opinions. I'll mainly be focused on the Sharks and then the A's, but I still try to follow everything so we'll see. So yeah, read along, argue, make comments, whatever. I'll try to have a new blog up after every sharks playoff game and every couple days or so for the A's. Hopefully I can stick to that. Thanks for readin!

  1. Hope you're looking forward to game two of the NLDS! Here's my take on Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers:

  2. UVI at the moment does not incorporate defense. I see defense as a separate entity from pitching or hitting. It's tough to really combine hitting and fielding into one stat, and even if you did, that would mean hitting UVI was even more different from pitching UVI than it already is.

The issue with doing defense stuff is this: There are so many defensive metrics out there (FRAA, +/-, and tons of others) and none seem to really agree on much. Even if we were to come up with something good for defense, it would just be something else in this jumble where no one knows what to believe.

The other big issue, as I outlined for some other things in my UVI: A Reprise article, is simply the lack of data widely available as far as defense. However, if you have any ideas on how to make a new defensive metric, I'd be eager to assist you.

There is plenty more work to be done on UVI however, and I highlight it both in the original article (talking about minor league translations, for one) and also in the Reprise article. If you could find some way to help me out with that stuff, I'd really appreciate it.
