That’s how it is for me. My dad passed on his love of the Cleveland teams to me and my brother, for better or worse. Growing up as a Cleveland sports fan, I've become used to the cycle of fleeting optimism, glimmers of hope and bitter disappointment, followed by me thinking I’ll never care that much about a team again. And then it starts again with the next season, and I still care.

I was interested in your profile above. I've done a number of pieces that talk about how tennis (my own sporting passion) has transmitted to my daughters - and even touched on shared enjoyment with my own parents. What you said really resonated. Isn't it remarkable how sport can have such wide effects, way beyond the essential pleasure of watching or taking part?
