Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Greg Lloyd, Larry Bird, Jim Rice, Pete Rose

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Pittsburgh Steelers, Boston Celtics, Chicago Cubs, Tennessee Volunteers, Memphis Tigers

  • Favorite Coaches

Chuck Noll, Red Auerbach, Phillip Fulmer, John Calipari

  • All-Time Sports Moment

Game 5, 1976 NBA Finals - Five overtime thriller between Boston and Phoenix got me hooked on NBA Basketball; recently tied by Pittsburgh's 27-23 win over Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

Steelers at Cowboys (October 17, 2004; Texas Stadium) - I covered the game for my newspaper, but found it really hard to maintain my objectivity

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

    Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak

  • Ruth or Mays?

Mays - "The Say Hey Kid" did it all (everything, but pitch that is) and it's a close call between Mays and Ruth. But, I give Mays a slight edge because he didn't play in the dead-ball era and the game had advanced in all aspects by his time.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Montana - And only because I didn't actually see Unitas play in his prime.

  • Jordan or Russell?

Russell - The Boston big man was dominant longer and had an archrival in Wilt Chamberlain. Jordan won six titles, but who was his archrival after the Bad Boys were conquered on his way to the Bulls' first title?

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Gretzky - But, for the same reason as Unitas/Montana - I just didn't see Bobby Orr play.

  • Pele or Maradona?

Pele - He and Maradona may have been on-par as players, but Pele's appeal to the world gives him the edge.

  • Federer or Sampras?

Federer - He finally conquered France

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Nicklaus - The Golden Bear still has four more Major titles than Tiger, so give Nicklaus the edge...for now.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

Petty - 200 to 76 (career wins); the King wins.

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Schumaker - And it's not really that close.

  • ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC?

SEC in football; Big East in basketball; Big 12 in baseball
