Lew's Bio

I'm a native Southern Californian who found his way up to the Great Northwest to attend Washington State University.

My bachelors degree in Fine Arts was awarded in 1973 after switching majors six times during my first six semesters at WSU.

It all started in 1969 though. That's when I was invited into the WSU family, becoming a life long Cougar. Yes, I'm a Coug!

Used to be an MLB and NFL fan.

As a season ticket holder for the LA Dodgers, I used to be a serious baseball fan. Tolerated several strikes between players and owners, but when both sides showed an extraordinary level of arrogance by allowing their dispute over who gets the biggest slice of their billion dollar pie by canceling the 1994 World Series...that was it. Done with MLB.

When the Rams took their sorry organization to St. Louis with the hope of leeching off the good nature of midwestern fans, that ended my loyalty to the NFL.

Through it all college sports have and continue to be my passion. My days of being a Pac-10 fan actually date back to the Pac-8. Those were the days when Jim Plunkett was throwing bombs to Randy Vataha and Ahmad Rashad was a running back at Oregon by the name of Bobby Moore.

My favorite college game to take in? Either the one I have tickets to or just about anything on television.

Favorite Athletes

Tiger Woods

Favorite Sports Teams

Washington State Cougars

All Time Sports Moment

Kirk Gibson's improbable homerun off Dennis Eckersley. The only time in my life when I exhibited a 42" vertical leap. Oh yeah, we were there about 8 rows up behind first base. There was no doubt about Gibson's shot going. It was gone...all the way.

Most Memorable Game Attended

2003 Holiday Bowl when the Cougs upset #4 Texas with a one-legged quarterback and monster defense. Close second would be the 1988 conference game when WSU upset the #1 ranked UCLA Bruins on their home turf in the Rose Bowl.

Most Unbreakable Sports Record

DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak.

Ruth or Mays?

Ruth, the quintessential bowler turned baseball player...

Unitas or Montana?

Joe Montana was the prototypical winner. Period.

Pele or Maradona?

Who?

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

PAC-10 of course...are you kidding?

  1. Thanks Lew! Hugs!

  2. No problem Lew. Do you mean the subheadings at the top of the article, i.e. college football > Pac-10 football > Washington State football? As far as I know the article would still show up in both the UCLA and WSU sections, even if the subheading said UCLA football, but I'm not sure about that. Either way, your focus is definitely WSU, so it makes sense to tag it with only the Cougs.

Good luck this weekend. I'll definitely try to catch a few games!

  3. Hey Lew,
The season may be rough, but Wulff has got a solid recruiting class coming in so far.
    Keep that head up friend!

  4. Hey Lew,

Thanks are always appreciated. I always enjoy reading your articles anyway, so I might as well edit while I'm at it.

I know what you mean about a tough article to write. Last year I was recapping the Seahawks regularly through the playoffs and was all set to write an article about their loss in Green Bay...but somehow never got around to it. Just too painful.

College football is one finicky game. It sure is looking pathetic for college football in Washington this year. At least the Cougs have a win.

  5. Thanks for the pick, Lew. Good luck to the boys against dem Ducks today.

  6. Thanks for the pick Lew!

  7. Very glad to help Lew, and it's always nice to be appreciated!

  8. Thanks for the pick Lew. My God, what has happened to your QBs? I am thankful they will live normal productive lives, but that's just horrible what has happened. Broken neck and broken back? While the Pac-10 looks soft this year, I think three teams have valid reasons: Ducks (6 QBs hurt), Wazzu (two QBS hurt) and UCLA (2 QBs hurt).

  9. Glad to see WSU get their first win. That is the great thing about college football: No matter the state of the team, a true fan is always excited for the game!

  11. Hey Lew,

Glad you like the headline. I hear you about putting the articles on two different sites. That's what I'm here for—to make your stuff look good on B/R!

By the way, I was all set to start against the Rams this Sunday, but the Keary Colbert-Koren Robinson acquisitions bumped me to the practice squad...

  12. Thanks for the pick, Lew. I'll keep my fingers crossed for better things for the Cougs next week.

  13. Lew,

After digging deep into the Jim Tressel era at OSU, I've discovered that the close call against Ohio shouldn't be shocking at all...

    I'd love your input!

  14. Thanks Lew!

  15. Excellent Lew, happy to hear it. As far as the Cougs go, one can only hope...
