Just wanted to make a short response @ Chuck. I'm not sure if I'm one of these 16 year olds you're referring too, (I hope not, because I'm 17, and don't enjoy being grouped in with those two), but you seem to be leaving out the fact that Griffey isn't a good hitter anymore.

Last season, we had the worst DH production in all of baseball, and he won't put up similar numbers to last year because he's a) a year older, and b) not going to see the same kind of playing time.

Griffey is not going to be our starting DH again this year, Jack Zduriencik has already made that fairly clear We're still going to have to go out and get a respectable one. And for the record, Matsui is a much better hitter than Griffey is at this stage of his career.

This signing was not about bringing Griffey back as a hitter, it was about bringing him back to keep team chemistry good, and to keep Ichiro happy.

Hope you don't mind this being on your board PJ. I don't want it to go any farther just wanted to put in my 2 cents as to what Chuck said.

I just saw your article on Griffey. Seeing as I don't want to get into a pissing contest with a couple of 16 year olds, I felt it best to post my comment on your board..hope you're cool with that.

The Griffey signing is a good one for a couple of reasons, reasons which these kids don't yet understand, because all they see is sabermetrics and the tendency to associate performance with $$.

Here's why I believe it will end up being a good signing.

The Mariners had just eight lefty hitters with at least one plate appearance last season, only three, Griffey, Ichiro and Branyan had more than 185. (The Yankees were over 50% total from lefties).

With Branyan a possiblity to leave, and with only Michael Saunders ready from the minor league system, the possiblity was good the M's would have gone into next season with an unproductive, powerless Ichiro as the only regular lefty hitter.

And say Griffey and/or Branyan did leave. Would they be able to sign a Hank Blalock or Hideki Matsui for two million? Doubtful. Even a second tier lefty option like Chad Tracy would cost more than that.

If Griffey is exclusively a DH against right handers and ends up with 100 fewer PA's than last year (which would be around 350), he could still put up similar numbers to what he did last year. And with the Angels likely to lose Figgins and Guerrero, the balance in the AL will shift. The M's won 85 games last year and finished 12 games out..next year they could win the division with 90 wins.
