Brendan's Fans (10)
Brendan's Bio
I'm an avid Baltimore Ravens fan and my first sports love is to football (as a fan, anyway- I am a rower myself). I go to college at Williams College in western Massachusetts. And don't ask me about baseball, because I view the commencement of baseball season as God's curse to the world.

The Short List What Brendan thinks about sport's most pressing questions

Favorite Athletes
Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Adalius Thomas, Tom Brady, LaDainian Tomlinson, Cal Ripken
-
Favorite Sports Teams
Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots.

All Time Sports Moment
My favorite is Jermaine Lewis's kick return for a TD in the 2000 Super Bowl that put the Ravens up 24-7. 21 seconds game-time before that, the score was 10-0. Ravens CB Duane Starks picked off Giants QB Kerry Collins and returned it for a TD, 17-0. Giants WR Ron Dixon returned the ensuing kickoff 90+ yards for a TD, 17-7. Jermaine Lewis's 84 yard return TD got momentum right back on Baltimore's side, and they never looked back. Objectively, though, the single greatest sports moment is two words long: The Shot. Christian Laettner, Duke vs. Kentucky. And I hate Duke, so that just goes to show you how awesome this moment was.
-
Most Memorable Game Attended
I've actually never been to a seriously important game, I usually watch it on TV. This might have to be when the Ravens beat the Broncos in Baltimore in the Wild-Card round of the playoffs en route to their Super Bowl win in 2000.
-
Most Unbreakable Sports Record
As much as I profess to hate baseball (true), the answer is 2,632. That's the number of consecutive games played by Cal Ripken Jr. In today's game of baseball, people take days off. I actually don't think anyone can pass this- Ripken played for 13 years in a row just to get to Gehrig's record and then he kept going after that.
-
Ruth or Mays?
Baseball isn't my thing, but it's got to be Ruth.
-
Unitas or Montana?
Unitas. I'm from Baltimore, even if I'm young. His son was a year ahead of me in high school.
-
Pele or Maradona?
I watched World Cup when it was on TV. I've never heard of Maradona and I don't know who Pele played for.
-
Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?
ACC. Come on now, I was a Maryland fan growing up.

How has the Colts offense performed in the postseason compared to other offenses? Find out.

Montana did win a title without Rice, but that title was singular. One title never would have immortalized him the way he has been after four. If Montana and Rice are both as great as advertised, then not having either one of them on the 49ers would have had a crippling effect on the team. That means neither would have four championships, which means neither would be regarded as being as great in retrospect despite both in fact being the exact same players regardless.

I don't know about single handedly Brendan considering that two of your top three players played together for the bulk of their championships.
As for Ray Lewis, he was a great, great player, but if you took away Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa, their run defense wouldn't have looked anything like it was and they wouldn't have been able to shut down opposing offenses the way they did.

Well Brendan, I checked out your top 10 list for Super Bowl era players. I can't say I agree very much with some of your choices though, like making Emmit Smith the highest ranked and only ranking running back on the list. I just will never buy into the idea that individual players should be judged by championships. I just don't see how being the best player on the best team makes someone the best player period (or in many cases simply the best player at a much publicized position on the best team).

Hey Brendan, thanks for the lovely comments and choosing my article for a POTD nod, that was very nice of you and I am honored. I chose a topic that may rub some the wrong way, but I am glad you could appreciate my POV and enjoy the article.
Thanks again!

Brendan, I'd love your input on this. Today, the NFL Draft took place. The Baltimore Ravens drafted Michael Oher and Paul Kruger to add youth to the offensive and defensive line. Was it good or bad?

I did indeed assume you were a Bronco fan b/c of your lengthy and thoughtful reply combined with the fact that Jack Walker's profile makes him a Denver guy and he responded similarly (although with substantially more animosity).
You still have my respect/admiration, but for putting so much effort behind a guy who's not even your guy. Well done.
As for your post, again, very good points that I can't say are wrong, but I just interpret the situation differently. I think that Cutler could choose to shake it off and move forward with the understanding that McDaniels is douche-bag (if he has in fact failed to reassure Cutler in even a minimal way).
But that's just my personality, which obviously does not make it right.
That article's in my queue.
