About Richard »

Born in Louisiana and raised in Kansas and Texas, my favorite teams are the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL and the Houston Astros in baseball. It's ironic, really: in Texas, if you like the Cowboys, chances are you hated the Oilers/hate the Texans and vice versa; if you like the Astros, chances are you hate the Rangers. The same rings true for me, although I am very happy Houston is back in the NFL.

I also like the Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers and Denver Broncos as secondary teams.

I don't have a favorite basketball team, partly because hoops bores me with all the timeouts, fouls and other play stoppages. In hockey, I'm partial to the Detroit Red Wings, Dallas Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs. I also like the Anaheim Ducks simply because the duck is my favorite animal.

My favorite memories include the Super Bowl victories over the Bills and Steelers along with Emmitt Smith becoming the all-time leading rusher. I never attended a game at Texas Stadium, unfortunately. On the Astros' side, I attended three games at the Astrodome (Houston defeated the Cubs, lost to the Braves and defeated the Phillies). It was great to see Glenn Davis homer against the Phillies in that game back in 1989. Other fond memories include the aborted 1994 season and seeing Houston finally get to the World Series in 2005. And, yes, I absolutely abhor the Astros' current uniforms and would like them modernize the sixties shooting-star look and bring back the blue and orange.

The Shortlist »

  • Favorite Athletes

Tony Romo, Nolan Ryan, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Bo Jackson

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros, Denver Broncos, Kansas City Royals, Texas A&M, Kansas Jayhawks, LSU Tigers, University of Houston Cougars

  • Favorite Coaches

Bill Parcells, Mike Shanahan, Scotty Bowman

  • All Time Sports Moment

Toss-up between Eli Manning and the Giants shattering the Patriots' 19-0 dreams and Kirk Gibson homering off Dennis Eckersley.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

1989 at the Astrodome. Mike Scott beat the Phillies and Glenn Davis homered

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

Cy Young's 511 career wins. A pitcher would have to average more than 25 wins a season for 20 seasons to reach it. And that's just not going to happen.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Both had positives, both had negatives. I'd give the edge to Mays. He was a better outfielder and had more than 3,000 career hits.

  • Unitas or Montana?

Joe Montana. And considering I'm a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan who saw "The Catch" on live television...

  • Jordan or Russell?

Russell. Jordan won championships against forgettable teams and received lots of help on fouls/charges from referees.

  • Gretzky or Orr?

Tie. Both are classy and both revolutionized hockey.

  • Pele or Maradona?

Pele, and it's not even close. Maradona's drug problems derailed what could've been a brilliant soccer career.

  • Federer or Sampras?

I'm not really a tennis fan. Sorry.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

Tiger Woods. Jack Nicklaus was great, but Woods has transcended the sport of golf.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

Not really an auto racing fan

  • Schumacher or Senna?

Again, not really an auto racing fan

  • Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

I have favorite teams in the Pac 10 (UCLA and Oregon), Big 12 (Kansas and Texas A&M), SEC (LSU and Florida), so I can't really pick.

Leonard Sutton commented on Houston Astros Name Brad Mills the New Manager, Assign Fitting Jersey

I hope Mills knows how to strengthen a bullpen. Lord knows we need a stronger one.

With each big name that is leaked to steroid use, America's most hated player is slowly becoming its most trusted. The biggest names in baseball are falling subject to steroid use.
