Josh's Bio
I've been a diehard Toronto Maple Leafs fan since before I could walk, and I've grown up with a love for hockey in general. I like to keep tabs on what's happening with every team, and the NHL isn't the only hockey I love - AHL, junior, university or international, you name it and I love it. I also enjoy most other sports, with the exception of basketball.
Along with Derek Harmsworth, I also co-host a new Internet radio show called Leafs Talk Today. The show is featured on youcastr.com and tackles all the latest news and speculation regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs and the rest of the NHL. We're always looking to add new guests, so get in touch with us if you're interested.
In the photo, I'm with Columbus Blue Jackets radio announcers Bill Davidge (colour) and George Matthews (play-by-play) in the press box during a game against Nashville in Nov. 2007.
I've been interested in sports writing for a long time, since I was a kid. I got my start as a sports reporter for my campus paper about three years ago, and since then I've amassed a wide range of experience in print and broadcast media, mostly in university sports. I've been the voice of the UPEI Panthers hockey club the last two years, and I've worked closely with the team and the local newspaper to produce game stories and player profiles.
Having received my BA this spring, I'm now focusing on my options for the fall, which include a possible communications internship with the Blue Jackets.

Thanks for your reads and comments on my articles as well.

Hello, Josh!
I took a short break from "reporting" and trivia to post a couple of editorials. They were discussion pieces, on what it takes to be a hockey player and one on sports myths. They were really fun to write, but aren't really a hit... but it was more than worth it to spread out a bit more. Don't worry, the normal stuff is on it's way back in ASAP, starting with Part 9 of MacHall's trivia and Part 3 of the propect series (should be four parts, but I may add another and make it five).
Along with the megadraft you have, I have to say that you have an impressive range, and a broad understanding of the prospect realm. It can be really tough to keep up with everything, let alone remember most of it.
Keep it up!
By the way, I'm trying to get an idea of what type of sources people use for their writing and research. Mostly internet, do you have your own personal collection of hockey reference (and if so, how extensive?), do you use local library/archive resources, or rely heavily on newspapers/hockey magazines? Only if you feel like it/have time. It's part of my own research, which I plan on sharing with the community. Thanks.
Take care,
M

Hey Josh. Thanks as always for the comments, and espcially the pick. Your gave me my 100th induvidual pick since joining up! Much appreciated.
Did you get a chance to gander at my most recent article. The idea is to get some discussion going about what it takes, and I'm hoping lots of people will join the discussion. Not that I'm going to needle you into commenting at the article, I was thinking you might like the look at the junior system and its expectations. If you have time, let me know what you think. I'm hoping folks in other sports will have a say too, but we'll just have to see what kind of profile it recieves.
Been enjoying the Olympics, noe that we are grabbing a couple of medals? I've been watching, and though I had to catch a few replays I was able to cheer on Simon Whitfield... it looked like if he had perhaps paced a bit longer and taken the sprint at the turn he might have burned through even better than the German runner... but who can ever say. Some fun stories, and it's been cool to see your coverage/angle on it. Also, the Millenium MegaDraft is a great idea. Way to keep it running, detailed, and interesting.
Anyway, I hope all is well. How's the autumn looking? Honing in on the internship? Anyroad, best of luck!

haha, yes, I am still alive. Anyways, sorry, but the show couldn't do on today, because I had some stuff to do. I am also pretty busy Thursday, but I can do tomorrow if you want.
The show looks fantastic (the schedule) and I think we'll fill 60 minutes with that no problem.
I am working on an article right now, so I'll be on for a while. Let me know.

I was definitely concerned about that—it's hard because of the....well...you know, 80 years of existence? hahaha
The goalies are just straight up personal opinion....Broda and Bower are my favorites of all time....plus I was trying to stay away from guys like Sawchuck and Pierre Pilotte who played only one or two years with the team because it's an All-Time Leafs team....not players who have played for them (although I used Red Kelly on defense! haha)
In all honesty I was hoping for the comments from you and Derek as trusted Leafers—and I'm still waiting for the standard "you're an idiot" comment that comes with any Leafs article :)

Hey, how's it going? Doing anything for the holiday?
Anyway, I am hopefully going to be posting a new series today, just short things hopefully. If it works, let me know what you think. Great job on the new answers by the way...very impressive.

Sounds great. It sounds like I should be able to set something up. We'll keep each other posted I'm sure. If there were any specific questions or topics of discussion you could send to my email that'd be great. Otherwise, please let me know what you'd like out of me... I may need to bone up!
You are right about Backlund being 24th.. for some reason I must have been thinking of Brent Krahn in 2000. McElhinney is indeed still part of the team, but he is currently assigned to the squad as back up I believe (unless something has changed). In any case, his status is that much higher than the others right now, and will be taking the lion's share at the early training camps when Miikka isn't there. I assume the others will have to be there as well.
John Negrin, by the way, looked really good. You'll have to excuse the lack of specifics right now: I took notes, but am just going off the top of my head right now, which isn't all that clear at the moment.
In the three days I attended, Neimetz didn't necessarily stand out, but when I watched him specifically he looked good. Mitch Wahl was similar. Kris Chucko stood out as he practised tipping the puck from the edge of the crease. Compare to a few others I watched attempt it, he practised it for a longer period of time and was very consistent. Important to note there was no goalie in net, just a man at the point taking shots.
Anyway, hope that keeps you going! Like I said, don't be surprised to see this turned into an article... if the publishing function is working for me yet. I needed to reset parts of the computer to Day One, and it's been taking time to realise just which pieces I'd accumulated over the years and taken for granted, and put them back together.
Talk to you soon,
M

Hey, J!
Thanks so much. I'd love to give that a go... and if I can't get it set immediately, I'd like to volunteer for any future Western Conference talk you might like to air! Thanks again.
I had had Skype on my PC before the total reset, so I'll see what can be done. It hadn't worked 100% before, but I may be able to work something out with a friend or family member who has a better computer.
By the way, I started writing you an email with some prospect tidbits, but I only had time to write about three lines before saving and leaving for an appointment. Just as a taster before I write out more, Mikael Backlund is the guy to watch out of this year's prospect camp. Drafted last year by Calgary in the first round (I want to say 9th overall but I'm not sure), the Swede has beautifully graceful speed and nice hands. The practices didn't give much of an inkling as to his physical presence, and he'd be likely to need it on the Flames squad. Darryl Sutter has stated emphatically that if he makes the squad it will be to play regularly, not just a few games here and there. Otherwise he'll go back to Europr to play, though he is property of a WHL team (Everett maybe?). It may sound harsh, but it's actually a great compliment to Backlund from Sutter.
Dan Ryder has returned. Kyle Greentree looks great... the eldest player on the prospect team, but he looks like he's close to putting it all together for a stab at the big game. Dustin Boyd was on the prospect roster despite playing 41 NHL games with Calgary last season... I assume this is due to his two-way contract staus, and the fact that others would have been called up before him last year had there not been injuries to other players.
As for goalies, it is pretty clear that Keetley and Lalande are the favourites right now, while Leland Irving and James Spratt are still in development in comparison. All looked pretty darn good though, and will benefit from David Marcoux and Jamie McLennan, still on suspension but helping with development for the Flames.
Anyway, I hope to churn this and more into an article, but either way I'll feed you some more details later. Let me know the plans. I'll write you later tonight to let you know if I've had any luck. Thanks again!

Hey there Josh!
Just wanted to say hey there. One thing after another with a computer crash on top of everything. Do you want me to email the answers to you, since I don't think they'll be up before Wednesday now? Oh, and I finally responded to another of your comments. Thanks as always!
Anyway, I went to the Flames prospect camp last week (3 of the 6 days). I was hoping to write it up but I have to see which electronic devices decide to cooperate with me before I commit. I am fine with email, so if you want to chat it up regarding prozzies (prospects, not the other usage!) drop me an email (sports.writer@live.com). There's a few other hockey things we may want to discuss in the run up to the season.
Stamps have gone back to their old ways a bit. Relying on a name, blaming that name. Inconsistency, especially on the defence is a problem. I often wonder if someone put a sporting curse on Cowtown... a few years of glory followed by a bit of the old Job treatment!
Anyway, hope all is well out there. Had planned on going to NB for the usual family visit, but just not in the cards - or wallet - this time around.
Love the new picture by the way. You'll have to give me some tips on how to break into the biz! Drop me a line if'n you like, and take care.

Lewy,
How goes it? Hope you had a good weekend. Anyways, I just dowloaded Skype.
I still plan on broadcasting the show tomorrow morning using youcastr. I will just have you (and guests, like Alan) call me through skype, and Ill turn the volume up so you guys can be heard.
I don't know my number yet. Still trying to figure that stuff out.

Well, I'm pretty set on doing the show on youcastr. I know it's pretty bare bones right now, but it will be alright. It helps us kind of get used to the software, and get comfortable doing the shows.
Then once it's out of beta we get our training wheels off and dive in head first.
In the meantime, we can play some audio from skype, and also there is a chat room where people from BR that are listening can ask questions through the chat.
