About

I was born and raised in the Bay Area, and as such, was brought up with the Three Great Truths about sports:

1. Every team from Los Angeles sucks.

2. Every team from New York sucks.

3. The East Coast Bias is real, and thanks in large part to the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network

I root for the A's, Niners, Sharks, Warriors, and Cal Bears. One remnant of my family's pilgrimage from out of the midwest to the Golden State last century still lingers... an unabiding love for all things Notre Dame. I can't shake it, try though I have.

Also, I'm a front-end engineer here at Bleacher Report. Always trying to make this place as pretty and as usable as possible. You're welcome.

Short List

  • Favorite Athletes

Joe Montana, Steve Young, Dennis Eckersley, Dave Stewart, Wade Boggs, Phil Mickelson, Joe Mauer, Patrick Marleau, Patrick Willis, Brett Anderson, Kurt Suzuki

  • Favorite Sports Teams

Oakland Athletics, San Francisco 49ers, California Golden Bears, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, San Jose Sharks

  • Favorite Coaches

Bill Walsh, Tony LaRussa, Bill Walsh, Steve Mariucci, Bill Walsh, Jeff Tedford, Bill Walsh, and Bill Walsh

  • All Time Sports Moment

November 20, 1982 at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, CA... better known as The Play.

  • Most Memorable Game Attended

USC at Cal in 2003... Cal was a huge underdog and beat the Trojans in triple overtime, handing them their only loss and creating the end-of-season situation wherein USC lost out on the BCS title game chance. By a stroke of happenstance, I sat in the USC student section for that game, wearing bright blue.

  • Most Unbreakable Sports Record

    DiMaggio's hit streak.

  • Ruth or Mays?

Mays. The much more complete ballplayer. Ruth was the greatest power hitter ever... but he never played the field like the Kid.

  • Unitas or Montana?

    Pffft. Montana. Easy.

  • Jordan or Russell?

I have to side with His Airness, but I could probably be persuaded...

  • Gretzky or Orr?

They call him The Great One for a reason...

  • Pele or Maradona?

    Soccer? Hmm. Pele, I guess.

  • Federer or Sampras?

Sampras. Though in a couple years this may be an easy call in the other direction. On April 16, 2009, however, I still give this to Sampras. After that 15th Grand Slam... yeah I lean Federer now.

  • Tiger or Nicklaus?

    Tiger. Tiger, Tiger, Tiger.

  • Petty or Earnhardt?

    What is this, curling?

  • Schumacher or Senna?

OK now you're just making names up...

  • ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC?

SEC is overrated. Big Eleven sucks. Big XII is stars and scrubs. Big East is a joke in football and second fiddle to the ACC in hoops. The ACC is just too easy to hate... Give it to the boys out west! Pac-10!

    Hi Steve,

I noticed you enjoyed Bob's interview with Ernie Banks the other day. I thought you might also enjoy the interview I did with him a few years back.
