About Karthika »

I've been a huge fan of tennis ever since Pete Sampras burst on the scene as a gangly 19 year old and aced his way to his first grand slam trophy. And then he had 14. I remember sitting on the edge of my seat in clench-fisted panic during Wimbledon 2001, when a barely known, pony-tailed teenager toppled the-then indomitable god of tennis. Soon that teenager was swinging his racket with some flourish of his own. Now, he’s the god of tennis, better known as Roger Federer, fighting off dogged challengers to his four-year reign.

Thank goodness there are these paranormal beings that fill those lofty shoes and furnish us with that kind of magic time after time, year after year, undaunted, relentless and almost always victorious in their pursuits. We often look to sport to celebrate the victories we cannot ourselves achieve, to be one with the kind of infallibility we could not otherwise experience and to savor the taste of the unstoppable adrenalin rush that amateur battles rarely provide. That's what professional tennis has meant to me in all my years of watching it.

I write about a great deal of things in addition to tennis, in particular politics and media issues. If interested you can check out my writing at http://karthikaswamy.com

This article was originally published in support of Relay for Life. If you have read this before, then I apologize, but please considering donating at least $1 to Make a Wish in the memory of Josiah Herring. In light of several recent events I felt compelled to revisit cancer awareness and have not had the time for a new article. I Promise to have a new article out soon in support of the cause.

Thank you everyone!
