John McLean is a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots, Houston Astros, and Philadelphia Flyers. He started following the Sacramento Kings when he moved to California as an adult. At Binghamton University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English, John played one semester of NCAA Division III ice hockey. He also played baseball, tennis, pickup football, and other sports as a youth.
