Pittsburgh—Washington Game Seven: Lost by the Caps
05/14/2009
Moved from the UK to Canada just to watch live hockey at a reasonable hour.
Bad taste in almost everything but also has lots of opinions.
P.S. Britain has hockey too - it might be rubbish but I love it.
Do you think Patrick Roy is ready to be an NHL head coach?

I thought you might be interested in reading this. I'm pre-empting the NHL's announcement, scheduled for sometime next week.

Hey Heather—Max Tcheyan here, a Bleacher Report Community Coordinator.
I've been spending time on our NHL page and read a couple of your old articles. Really on-point analysis...you do good work.
Given that you haven't written in a while, I thought I'd check in and see if you're interested in picking up your coverage again. What do you say?
If not, it would be great if you could give me some feedback on why you decided to stop writing and what we could have done to better serve you. If you wouldn't mind, please shoot me a line at mtcheyan@bleacherreport.com with any thoughts.
Thanks so much,
Max

Hey there. Sorry it's been so long. I was away from the world for over a month (sick, busy, etc) so I dropped off the map a bit.
How's it been going over there? Yeah, it was a disappointing Cup run fo both of our teams... Calgary came close, but again, a first round exit. At least they qualify... they didn't get bogged down by the usual curse!
I've been doing a bunch of trivia, so if you fancy getting into the game for summer AND taking a whole new look at the NHL, then give them a try. Even if you don't know the answers, there are full paragraph solutions, so you can always read it for history! Let me know if you have posted your answers, I'll take a look and give you a score. I've even added a modicum of British hockey trivia, with more to come!
Anyway, I hope you are well. I am going to read your more recent articles when I get home later... looking forward to it.
take care,
M
By the way, would you like my Walker's crisps points? they don't do me much good from here!

Glad you like the edits. I have the same problem. Last year I stayed up until the end of that horrid long Canucks play-off game, even though I had to be at work by 7:30 the next morning...I was a legal secretary at the time, so I was, of course, working non-stop until 5 pm. Totally worth it.
My son loves goalies too, btw. He's been all excited because he just got Hasek's autograph in the mail.

Wow, it's cool finding a ice hockey fan in Britain! Do you know if the London Racers coming back anytime soon? I loved their white jersey(kit) with the winged logo.

Oh, and itv 1 has a new show called Headcases, and while they won't be doing any hockey stuff, they do a pretty good bash of Beckham apparently.

Why Guilford? My family is from Exeter (well, part of it is from Glasgow, but the one side hail from Devon) and there was no hockey team there when I was a kid. I have a mate who lives in Ash (not far from Guilford) and as my Canadian team is Calgary (Flames, they are one of my NHL teams) the name was too perfect. I don't remember there being a team in Exeter when I was a kid... is there anything near there now? I always wanted a "home team", but Cathedral cities don't get that much... the Exeter City football team never did well enough to qualify for the League... another problem with footy! Only a few select teams ever succeed; the rest are stuck in eternal limbo.
I remember Theo in Belfast... for a while. Then he screwed up there too! I was a fan when he was a Flame in the 80'-90's, but once he left Calgary it was a bit different. It wasn't as easy to excuse him for poor behaviour.
Right now I am missing the green county, but if I were there right now I wouldn't be here for the post-season. That being said, I really don't like North American telly as much (except for Hockey Night in Canada)... no Green Wing for these folks. I miss Walker's too... no prawn cocktail on shop shelves! I must sound like a loon!
I can't wait to get this playoff party started. I know what you mean about football being so prevelent, but not for people like us who have found something better. When I was a kid I had a little red cap with a chequered ball on it that said "football". I wore it because it was the same colour as the Flames and England, but I didn't really care much about the football (and I DO like the sport, just not fanatically!) British hockey isn't that rubbish... it just feels like more people should be aware of it. I really have never understood why it hasn't caught on. Football can be sooo slow, yet fans can see the beauty in every play, which I completely understand. Hockey has so much more of what people SAY they want, but seem unwilling to accept it as legitimate. Why?
I just wrote an article on hockey sportsmanship, and even in the beautiful game I have never seen the kind of class the "barbaric ice hockey players" display most of the time. Everyone dwells on "violence" as if that's the entire game. UFC and boxing seem to be okay, so why complain that fighting in hockey is practically illegal?
Anyroad, thanks for wrting back. Are we the only ones not on the footbal pages? Speaking of which, have you had people change the UK spellings on your writing to US?
Take care and see you out there. I'm sure there'll be lots to write about in the next few weeks! Oh, and as a "Canada-phile", if there's any questions you want to ask, please do! I love this country too, and studied Canadian history at school.

Hi Heather!
Just thought I'd say hi as someone who's across the pond right now and can feed you NHL info from the source if you like!
Do you have a favourite elite League hockey club? I was thinking about doing a bit on english hockey myself but didn't know if there was an audience. Good job on bringing it to the fore! It's too bad more people don't know how good hockey is and that it actually available in Britain... too focused on football!
Anyroad, hope you have a way to catch the playoffs. Take care!

Sounds good, Heather--my apologies for the screw-up. FYI, I changed the single quote marks to double quote marks to conform to BR standards. Thanks very much for sharing your work, and keep it coming when you can.
Best,
Ryan

OK Heather.
Having read your profile I have to admit I've lost some respect for you ( New Jersey Devils ).However, I will be back in the UK this May and hope to take in a Rangers game but if there is any hockey to be found ... I'll be there! Keep writing.

DeleteHi there,
I have recently started my own project to rank the top 100 hockey players off all-time and just recently posted players 1-10. I would love to hear what you think about my list or for you to even post your own list in the comments section. Please, give it a read!
