MJ's Bio

The Sharks' co-Community Leader (with Danielle Marchell--check her stuff out too!) was born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, attended University Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and lives in San Francisco, California. He's been working for non-profits since 1992 and the performing arts since 1994.

Used to be a huge baseball fan, but was turned off by the imbalance of payrolls; used to be a huge basketball fan, but was turned off by an imbalance of officiating. Now it's first and foremost NFL and NHL, followed by college football, basketball, and hockey.

Also writes sports for MVN.com and does social and spiritual commentary at the link to "MJ's Website" below profile photo (that's his dog and her late kitten-child)...please check it out!

Mays--not even close, since he was the all-around player.

Unitas or Montana?

Unitas, by one of the short hairs on his head--but I'll take Elway.

Pele or Maradona?

Pele since I think he'll prove to be more timeless, but admittedly I don't know much about the world's #1 sport.

Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, or Big East?

Big Ten, not because it's best athletically, but because it cares more about education than the others (also respect Pac 10).

  1. Of course you are always free to change your article back. I will try to keep that in mind for any sharks articles that I edit. I was just following pure journalistic writing style, in which one sentence paragraphs are the preferred norm. Thanks for the heads up!

  2. Sounds good.

  3. Yeah I saw the comment. My blog is getting almost no traffic at all. Just family and the occasional friend from church/youth group when I direct them to it.

  4. That's cool, especially since this site has a lot of European writers, anyway. I'll try to keep it in mind next time I run into one of your articles.

  5. I got a new post up. Check it out and tell me what you think!

  6. Yeah got to agree with you both are special. It was an article posted by someone else, that I left a reply on. If I would do a Pack one, how they drafted two QB's to help Rogers. But did they really leave the door open, for Favre to return should Rogers get hurt.

  7. Thanks for getting back. I appreciate it.

  8. I like the Sharks jerseys in 03, much better than the "Mighty" Ducks. I'm gaining interest in the Sharks as its becoming more and more likely I'm going to end up finding a job with a certain SF based company after college. Thats a year or so away, but I'm still excited about San Francisco, and going to cheer on watching the Stars and Ducks beat San Jose, while cheering (from season ticket seats) for the Sharks to win every other game.

Oh BTW, ever taken your wife to Scoma's down by the wharf? I recommend it.

  9. I was responding to an ignorant and knee-jerk reaction to my post. I made a fair comment, which is to say that the man (Carlin) used a public forum to not just make light-hearted fun of people, which is what comedians do after all, but to literally call them vile names and demean them. I also said that for most of his career I thought he was very funny, maybe one of the best ever. I mentioned the groups that I mentioned because those are the groups of people he insulted on a regular basis. And you're wrong. Unlike most people, I can laugh at myself quite loudly, if the humor is smart and provocative rather than simple name calling. When Richard Pryor would make fun of white people it was smart, edgy and very revealing. He is my favorite comedian of all time and I'm only 30 so I never got to see him live. So my opinions about the groups Carlin objectified are irrelevant. One more thing. Performers who use a forum like a stand up to say things they would never have the balls to say to a person's face are pussies. I'm not saying Carlin was one of those because I didn't know the man, but if you are only able to laugh at those you disagree with then you take yourself too seriously, man. None of us are perfect. Read the comment "spencer" or whatever his name is left in reply to my original comment, then let me know if I was out of line.

  10. heh, heh, heh, i'm sure that a cousin or two has had their own "crop" on the edge of the family tobacco fields. but their all freakin' doctors now so ...

strong feelings are important. i would have no respect otherwise.

  11. I thought id let you know today i was playing a fantasy draft franchise on NHL 2003 as the San Jose Sharks, thought that would make you proud.

  12. well, the way they hand out those miniature ones, swag fits. ryan thompson played 33 games and got one from the 2000 yankees and put it in the courthouse here in kent county.

it's true though, truly, all you say is true, even the smoking but ... i was born in Carolina on a tobacco farm that, believe it or not, still grows weed and i only smoke cigs made in my hometown, which is broke and dying. i'm kinda makin' a statement, dying and keeping my uncles off my back all at the same time.

the truest thing that you said was about spending money well and my O's be the perfect point. senor angelos gets ragged about ruining the team but his only sin is his GM's and his kids saying , "daddy, daddy, buy me roberto alomar, buy me joey belle" and we know how that went. ol' pete will write the checks they just go to the wrong accounts.

peter angelos has a TON of $'s and could sign any free agent andy mcphail wants but andy's going to do the right thing first.

  13. sorry MJ but when I say swag i mean the big ol' metal thing with all the flags on it ... yeah the BoSox have won a couple and by god the yankees should be in the playoffs every year but midlmarket teams have copped some gold too.

i'm just sayin' that big bucks don't always bring the booty home and this season should be a tell.

my pic is of David Pearson circa '78ish ... when america really was a free country. i do smoke though ... a lot ... i need one now btw.

  14. Hey MJ, I can't believe I forgot the Sharks' analysis and I am a bit unhappy witht he article myself. I was rushing to get it done before work this morning and will be more patient next time...

  15. I think that my main job in this is to maintain a blog that will keep up in contact with everyone across the country that we have known.

Yes, I would love it if you prayed for us!
