I grew up admiring a trio of athletes who I was convinced could do no wrong: Dan Marino, David Robinson and Ryne Sandberg. Those were my guys. The Dolphins and the Spurs were nearly mirror-images of one another: Both were good enough to get by in the regular season, but always found ways to not get it done in the post-season. And the Cubs were, well, the Cubs. But I did enjoy watching one of the best quarterbacks, one of the best centers, and one of the best second basemen to ever play the game.
Eventually, the '80s turned to the '90s and those guys began to retire. First Ryno, then Marino, and finally The Admiral. As my heroes hung it up, my attention shifted from the pro game to the college game. And I discovered that what the amateurs lacked in athleticism, they made up 10 times ...
