Arsenal FC All-Time XI

Arsenal FC have been blessed with some of the finest players which British football has ever seen. The history of the club is as rich and varied as any, and for a club who have not been relegated from the top flight in over 90 years, they have a long history of success.

From Herbert Chapman and his revolutionary W-M formation, led by maestros Cliff Bastin and Alex James, and boasting David Jack, Charlie Buchan, Joe Hulme and Eddie Hapgood, to the 1953 team of Joe Mercer, the Compton brothers and Jimmy Logie.

Then the double winners of 1971, Mclintock, George, Radford, Graham and Armstrong, through to the days of George Graham as manager, Tony Adams, Alan Smith, Paul Merson, David Rocastle and Steve Bould.

Finally, onto Wenger-perhaps the finest period in the club's history-consistent success mixed with players of wonderful entertainment value and ability. The names of Dennis Bergkamp, Marc Overmars, Emmanuel Petit, Patrick Vieira, Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Thierry Henry and latterly Cesc Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and Gael Clichy will go down as some of the finest in the club's history.

Here we take a look at some of the legends of the club as we build a composite all-time XI of Arsenal FC.
Begin Slideshow

The Hand of Henry: Why the Former Arsenal Star Is Not a Cheat

First things first, the Irish boys were magnificent last night. They showed desire, passion, belief, bottle, and everything else you'd want in your national team.

If England showed a third of that passion and commitment, they would be very hard to beat in South Africa next year.

Unlike the first leg, Trapattoni's men came out to play and attacked the French at every given opportunity. Time and time again they cut through the fragile French back-four by exposing the obvious weak link—Julien Escudé.

Simply put, Ireland deserved to win the game last night.

However, the game will not be remembered for the way the Irish team played or the magnificently worked goal by Robbie Keane.

Sadly, the match will be remembered for one thing and one thing only:Henry's own version of "La Main de Dieu".

Minutes before this incident, the French players felt that they were denied a penalty when Nicolas Anelka dinked the ball past the on-rushing Shay Given, goes down under what looked like a foul from the keeper in the Irish penalty area.

The referee was having none of it and gave a goal kick. However, replay showed that Given had a sneaky grab of the striker's ankle as the ball went past him. To be fair to Anelka, he didn't complain about the referee's decision, but one thing's for certain - I've seen penalties given for a hell of a lot less.

Minates later, William Gallas nods a Thierry Henry cross into the net, prompting wild celebrations from players and fans alike.

At first, when the goal was scored, I was convinced that William Gallas scored with his hand, but the frame-by-frame replay clearly showed that it was, in fact, Thierry Henry that controlled the ball with his hand before feeding the Arsenal defender.

At the this point the linesman should've flagged, and the referee should've chalked off the goal. But they didn't, and the rest, as they say, is history.

However, to listen to some of the anger and indignation which spewed out in the aftermath of the incident, you would think that the Frenchman had invented a whole new way of cheating.

Or even worse, that he'd killed someone.

The sad truth is this: every striker in the world would've done the same as Henry.

Robbie Keane himself claimed that he felt "cheated" by Henry and that he "wouldn't expect it from anyone."

Thats hypocrisy at his finest because Keane himself "cheated" in the past to win penalties and free-kicks and, given the chance, he would've definitely played-out his own version of the infamous Hand of God routine.

Furthermore, this hypocrisy also exists among fans, managers as well as the British media.

The collective thinking is this: "Cheating is terrible, we should get rid of it, and anyone caught cheating deserves to be punished, shamed, ridiculed....Unless its us."

Had Robbie Keane scored the winner last night in exactly the same circumstances, I'm fairly certain that we would not be seeing the same venom and vitriol from the British media aimed at Henry.

And this is basically what ensures that the culture of "cheating" continues to thrive in our beautiful game, never genuinely addressed or challenged.

In addition, the chances are that, next week, your favourite player will be rolling around, diving, faining injury, and doing whatever it takes to win a game, even if that mean blatantly cheating.

And will you be disgusted, ashamed or even call for his head? I very much doubt it.

All football supporters have this in common: They don't care about cheating at all; what they actually care about is being cheated against.

When their own players cheat, the talk is usually about how they were clever, streetwise and cute;or they simply smirk to each other, barely a peep about it.

Thierry Henry is a truly great player—one of the best players we've seen in the Premier league - but because of this one controversial act, many in the media are already trying to destroy his reputation.

And sadly a lot of arsenal fans are falling for this. Any notion that the "Hand of God" incident somehow diminishes anything he did for Arsenal is so hysterically fickle it’s untrue.

What caught my eye after the game was the sight of Thierry Henry and Richard Dunne shaking hands, and even hugging at one point. Dunne is an experienced professional and therefore knows that one of his own players could've easily profited from a similar incident.

After the game Kevin Doyle told Sky Sports:

“It is just instinctive on his behalf, but it is that obvious that I'm sure he expected the free-kick straight away,” the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward stated.

"I don't blame him as much as how it's not seen to be honest."

Henry is not the first and, certainly, will not be the last player to benefit from a handball incident.

Football history is littered with such controversies: Diego Maradona’s Hand of God goal against England in 1986; Alan Hansen's handball clearance off the line against Everton in the League cup; and Henry himself was denied a goal via Stephen Henchoz's hand on the line against Liverpool in the 2001 FA Cup final.

Last Wednesday night, William Gallas scored a goal that shouldn't have stood. the referee, who's been excellent on the night, together with the linesman, failed to spot the handball by the French captain.

On any other day, the referee would've awarded an indirect free-kick to Ireland.

However, he didn't, and the goal stood. Thus, the blame lies squarely at the feet of the match officials, not Thierry Henry.

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Ireland vs. France: Travesty and Technology; What Can We Do to Fix Football?

What a sad night.

What a sad, sad night.

Hell ya, I shed a tear. I shed a tear or 10.

We deserved to win. But we didn't.

Now...where can I point this big foam finger?

Who can I blame?

Which goat shall I scape today?

Paul McShane - In fairness, he tried his little ginger best (which just isn't very good).

Thierry Henry - Although I can appreciate his Gaelic footballing ability, perhaps his actions were suited for a slightly larger pitcher, filled with a larger number of slightly uglier men. However, really...I mean really ...can you sit there, laptop resting on your testicles, or ovaries, and say you wouldn't have done the same thing?

The ball is going out. You are in extra time. Nobody is going to see (except the thousands in attendance and the millions watching around the world). Give the ball a little flick with your wrist, keep it in, pass it to Bill, and book your flight RSA.

You would all do the same things.

Anyone who wouldn't is either:
A) A liar
B) Mentally disabled
C) A filthy, stinking liar
D) Morally righteous. Then I would vomit on you repeatedly, so as to attempt to corrode your Holier-than-thou skin to see if you would melt or rust.
E) A gobshite. I mean, we are talking about sending your country to the World Cup finals. Most of the time you get one shot. If you are lucky you get two. And only legends of the sport get three or more shots. Actually , most of the time you never get a shot! So, you can engage in a little bit of gamesmanship and con the referee by taking your shot, or you can play fair and kick some penalties.

Alright, I'm obviously being facetious: What Titi did was wrong.

It's hard to say that because this is an Arsenal blog (normally) and, for me, Thierry Henry is God, or at least an angel with god-like abilities (such as his divine dribbling and celestial speed).

But you are not allowed to handle the ball. It's pretty much the simplest rule one can think of regarding football. The game is designed to be played with your less dexterous limbs. Otherwise it would be called rugby.

However, it is not the players who are consigned the task of enforcing the rules of the game. It is the referees , the match officials . They are the ones who control the conduct on the field. They are the ones who tell you if what you did is right or wrong.

It is very rare, nearly never, when you will see a player put down his hand when a ball is kicked out of play and say, "It's the other team's ball. It went out off me!"

In fact, if someone was to say this, I think Thierry Henry would be high on the list of athlete's who would admit fault when they had done something wrong. You have already heard Titi say that he did touch the ball, but it was not intentional.

Which is something that is being conveniently forgotten, as well.

The ball was going freaking fast, lads. The cross was swung in. It missed everyone's head (including Dicky Dunne's and, more disparagingly, Ginger McBane of my existence). It skips off the grass and hits Thierry's arm.

Watch the replay again. I don't think he goes to control it. And even if he does, he's got less than a second to think what to do with it. It's not as if he placed the ball on his foot and cushioned into Gallas' path. (Before you jump down my throat, this is incredibly painful for me to write, so please do not question my nationality. I'm Irish like a lot of you who are going to read this article, and my broken heart has been bleeding green since final whistle yesterday.)

Anyway, I'm not trying to justify his actions, just perhaps putting things in perspective. I don't think his intention was to cheat the referee; I think his intention was to do what he could to see his team through to South Africa. I think he reacted instinctively to save an unplayable ball, and unfortunately the better team went out, and another nation went through.

Justice was not done on two counts:

1. A player has scored after an abuse of the rules of the game, and

2. The team that deserved to go through has been left behind (We should also remember that this could have happened even if the goal was disallowed: Ireland still needed to put away some penalties in front of a boatload of Frogs)

So whose fault is it then, Adam? My foam finger is starting to get sore!

The Referee - Well, it is his duty to enforce the rules of the game. Yes, he should have seen it, and if he didn't see it, his linesman should have seen it.

But I can understand. We are not infallible. Nobody sees everything all the time.

The linesman was busting his butt to get in line with the last defender and probably should have seen that France was offside when the set piece was taken. However, this is a tough thing to do.

Essentially, you have to look in two places at once: To your left to see when the ball is kicked and in front of you, to see where the blue guys are when the ball is kicked.

I'm not a linesman, but I'd say it's harder than it looks.

The referee probably was in a good position to see almost everywhere else, unfortunately Paul McBane of my existence and his big ginger mop was probably blocking the referee's line of sight and the balom .

So, yes, it is the referee's fault. However, people make mistakes. We will continue to do so until the end of time. It is impossible to be perfect, and even more impossible to be perfect all the time.

It is perfectly impossible to be impossibly perfect (This makes little sense but I quite like it all the same).

So, I'm not really willing to place the blame on the lads in black. In fact, I remember thinking during the game (I believe after 90 minutes) that the referee had been outstanding and probably gotten every decision, little or big, correct. (I look to hearing from those in the viewing audience who enjoy unnecessary incessant arguments).

Well who is at fault, then ?

You want to know who is at fault!? You want to know who to point the freaking finger at!? You want to know the name of the new Facebook group you should join if you want to avoid things like this happening in the future?!

FIFA.

FIFA??? What the hell have they got to do with it?

I mean, sure they appointed the referee, but they couldn't control his actions, couldn't control what they did or did not see (Although if they could through telekinesis, the incredible "coolness" of that would only be surpassed by its fantastic terror).

You want to know why? Because for years, FIFA has neglected to introduce technology in order to cut crap like this out of football. This isn't the first time this has been brought up either.

Freaking years . Three hundred and sixty-five days multiplied by numbers larger than one.

There is technology available to the powers that be: the rule making body of the sport we all know and love. However, Blatter keeps bleeting on about keeping football the same at the grassroots and professional level, and that technology will eliminate some of the human element of football.

Bollocks .

Has tennis gotten worse with Hawkeye?

Have people stopped following the NFL since the introduction of challenges and instant replay?

Yes, but these are sports with stoppages in play.

Okay...what about rugby? Rugby has only become more popular and more professional since the introduction of technology into the sport, and the stoppages in play in rugby are comparable to a football game (they did, after all, derive from the same sport).

So stick that argument up your stodgy little arses.

FIFA has neglected its duty to review the rules and regulations of football and bring them in line with the demands of those involved in the world of sport today. They have made limited attempts to integrate goal-line technology into football, testing one product at one tournament (U20 in 2007 or something), but after some unfortunate malfunctioning of the product, FIFA and UEFA have scrapped the idea and decided rather than using more effective "eyes" that we should, to add more chefs to the pot and use six more referees in Europa league matches this season.

Clearly this eliminates the biggest problem with referees. The capacity for human error.

Oh wait...no it doesn't...

Freaking idiots.

The integration of instant replay and goal-line technology could help resolve the many flashpoints within the 90 minutes of a soccer match with no significant delay to the fluidity of the proceedings (Furthermore, I believe referees do have the ability to tack on added time for stoppages at the end of the 90 minutes. I hear at some stadiums the clocks work differently than others though—link ).

Why Should FIFA/UEFA/the Relevant FA Incorporate the Use of Technology into the Regulations of the Game?

1. To help the appointed referees, who are so consistently hung out to dry by their respective associations, confederations, and federations. They are generally not allowed to talk to the press after a match, having perhaps made a questionable decision, and are made the fall-guys of almost every bad decision. It is about time that these people were given a break. I doubt there is a professional (in attitude, not in job title) referee who wouldn't like some help when having to decide if there was contact for a penalty, or if the ball had crossed the line.

2. To [help] eliminate diving (one of the scourges of the modern day game) from football. The players who attempt to con the referee and gain an advantage in the game by abusing the rules would be reprimanded rather than rewarded for their poor gamesmanship and unsporting antics (Think Rooney v. Arsenal in the 50th Match unbeaten streak, or Eduardo against Celtic in UCL Qualifying this Sept., or Cristiano Ronaldo when...well. whenever someone farts near him in the box.).

3. To help referees make split-second decisions regarding goal mouth scrambles. To prevent the awarding of phantom goals, and the disallowing of actual goals. I think we can all remember a situation where a ball may or may not have crossed the line, or even entered the goal, where we would have liked some clarification or a different, more equitable result. Think Liverpool Chelsea UCL, when Mourinho was in charge of the Chavs. Think Reading's ghost goal against Watford last season.

4. Most importantly, to stop the existence of gross injustice in the sport. We only need to think as far back as yesterday to recall a situation where the use of the eyes of a camera, and the instant playback onto a monitor for the fourth official, could have stopped France from scoring a goal, which resulted from a breach in the rules of the game.

However, also think of Chelsea against Barcelona in the second leg at Stamford Bridge last season. when they were denied two stone wall and three questionable penalty decisions in their favour, which would have surely put the tie out of reach for the Catalans.

Why Is This So Important?

Well, we can sit here and shed tears about the WC hopes and dreams of Richard Dunne, Kevin Kilbane, Damien Duff, and Shay Given perhaps having died in France. They all might never get another chance to represent their country in the world's grandest tournament.

We can all say that it's about time the saddened fans, whose hearts have been broken by bad officiating on many occasions, can finally trust that the system won't rob them of what is rightfully theirs.

However, this isn't the reason that technology must be incorporated into football.

What is, then?!

Freaking money. Freaking cash.

Think of the amount of money in football these days. Think about how much the FAI is going to lose as a result of Ireland missing the plane to RSA. Think about how much money Chelsea lost after missing out on an appearance in the CL final last season. Think about how much money Arsenal may have lost because Eto'o was ruled onside instead of offside and there was no technology to clear up the situation.

We are talking about millions of Euro now, and it is the legal and economic responsibility of FIFA, as the drafters of the documents which govern the game we know and love, to draft them in a manner which observes the highest standard of care.

They have failed to meet the required standard of care and they have breached their duty to provide their members with an adequate level of policing, legislating, and governing.

I think it is time for a change. Let's bring technology into football so we can leave poor Thierry alone. He, after all, is not the one to blame here.

Arsenal-Chelsea Rivalry May Decide This Season's Champion

The Chelsea-Arsenal rivalry was born in 1907 when the two first played against one other. This was the first time that two London teams had played each other in the First Division and drew a staggering capacity of 65,000.The most of it is been dominated by Arsenal, by winning 68,drewing 51 and losing 49 out of total 168 matches played between the two sides.

Arsenal’s domination over Chelsea continued through to the 2002 FA Cup Final. The match was a star-studded affair. Every player on both sides was an international. Arsenal had the likes of David Seaman, Tony Adams and Thierry Henry while Chelsea had Frank Lampard, Celestine Babayaro and Arsenal old boy, Emmanuel Petit. 0-0 at the half, Arsenal took the lead in the 70th minute courtesy of Ray Parlour and doubled the lead 10 minutes later thanks to Fredrik Ljungberg.

What took the Arsenal- Chelsea rivalry to another level were two things. The appointment of Jose Mourinho as Chelsea Manager and the transfer of Ashley Cole to Chelsea. Mourinho saw that the Chelsea-Arsenal rivalry was one way traffic. He wanted to change this up and in no time got under the skin of Arsene Wenger. Wenger and all of Arsenal didn’t like the fact that Cole wanted to go to Chelsea and after putting up a fight, finally let him go although it helped that they received William Gallas in return.

After this, Chelsea was far more competitive in the Chelsea-Arsenal rivalry. They started winning more games and more important games like they did in 2007 League Cup Final. This was the final League Cup final to be played in Cardiff as the new Wembley Stadium was now ready.

Who Should Deputize Alexandre Song When He Goes to the African Nations?

Alexandre Song was easily the most criticized Arsenal midfielder during Arsenal's poor season in 2008/2009. Early lackluster performances enabled the Arsenal fans to slag off the Cameroonian. But 2009/2010 has seen the 22-year-old become a mature defensive midfielder who is playing superb football.

His physicality and strength have meant opposing midfield attacks are immediately shredded. Arsenal have lacked a central defensive midfielder since the departure of Patrick Vieira in 2005, but Song looks to have covered that loss.

Unfortunately for Arsenal the inform midfielder departs in January to participate in the African Nations Cup with Cameroon. This brings the question who should deputize for him whilst he is away? Arsene Wenger has insisted Samir Nasri will not, so who should it be?

Abou Diaby

The lanky Frenchman is blessed with height and physique and was thought to be the next Patrick Vieira. Although he has began playing a more attacking role, playing him in the defensive role during Song's absence wouldn't be a bad option.

He is capable of being a very strong defender and his height would be more than useful.

Denilson

Denilson was in and out of the defensive midfielder role last season. Although he lacks the strength of Song and Diaby he is still capable of portraying the "invisible wall."

Denilson is known to perform vital defensive tasks without receiving credit. Although the Brazilian is more preffered in an attacking role he is a credible option.

Aaron Ramsey

The talented Welsh teenage is fulfilling his potential this season and with Song out of action during January this could be a great opportunity to stamp his foot down on a starting birth. The former Cardiff midfielder has shown glimpses of great talent this season and thanks to his childhood rugby games, the Wales international lacks nothing in physicality.

Francis Coquelin

The French teenage ,who is touted as the next Vieira/Makelele, has only featured in the League Cup since joining the Gunners from Laval last season. However, it is evident the teenager has a huge future and is certainly capable of fulfilling Song's role.

Experience can only strengthen the youngster's growth so there would be no harm in giving Coquelin a chance.

Mark Randall

Not quite on the fringe of first team football but currently a cup starter. The Englishman is also a suitable option. Randall is a young, strong, quick, and intelligent midfielder who has potential to be the next big thing. Although he may seek a loan move in January, playing Randall in Song's absence also wouldn't hurt.

Emmanuel Frimpong

Yet to make his first team debut for the Gunners, Frimpong is definitely one for the future. The teenage is also tipped as the next Vieira with his strength and intelligence. Although it may be a little early to gift him Premiership experience, it could work.

Kieran Gibbs

Although primarily a left back Gibbs has played a heavy amount of football as a central midfielder. His strength, pace and calmness allow hims to be a strong defender and his

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Arsene Wenger's Central Thinking Can Solve Arsenal's Striking Problems

As Robin Van Persie was stretchered off on Saturday night, you would have forgiven Arsene Wenger for bemoaning his own rotten luck. Losing a player of Van Persie's stock and standing would hurt any team, let alone a team set up with the Dutch man as their attacking spearhead.

The Dutchman has been one of Arsenal's stand out figures in what has been a resurgent campaign for Arsene Wenger's team after last season's various trials and tribulations, especially in the wake of Emmanuel Adebayor's departure.

Yet with his injury, and the groin injury suffered by Nicklas Bendtner, how Arsenal cope with their latest injury crisis could play a big part in how they fare this season.

Conventional wisdom dictates that Eduardo would be the man to step up. The Croatian, fresh from signing a new long-term contract at the club, has a goal-scoring record which is the envy of many strikers around Europe.

His record at international level stands at a phenomenal 18 goals from 28 appearances, while for Arsenal he has 18 goals in 48 appearances, and Wenger said: “We all look forward to enjoying Eduardo's performances in an Arsenal shirt for a long time to come.”

The question over Eduardo is not about ability, but more suitability and durability. A class act facing goal, the way in which Wenger's team play means that as the attacking spearhead he would be required to act as the focal point teeing up his fellow forwards or play-making adroitly.

Yet Eduardo's game is not built around that, his quality has always been dropping deep to support a front-man, as he has for Emmanuel Adebayor in his first season at Arsenal, and Ivica Olic for Croatia.

Furthermore, questions can be asked about whether a striker who has only recently recovered from a career-threatening injury can stand up to the rigours of consistent first team football.

Eduardo has been cursed with a series of niggles, which are commonplace for players recovering from injuries, and with only four starts all season-Arsenal fans will be praying the Croatian can survive a punishing Winter schedule of 11 games in almost 40 days.

Another option could be Carlos Vela , the tricky Mexican striker whose impressive cameos hint at a bright future. Yet first team action has been sadly lacking for the 21-year old, with only ten starts in his Arsenal career yet he has still managed to score six goals, including some beautiful finishes against Sheffield United and Burnley in the cup competitions.

However, his lack of exposure in the Arsenal team perhaps demonstrates that for all his promise, his time has not yet come. Similarly his problem could be his similarity to his fellow striker Eduardo.

Lightning quick, skillful and a wonderful finisher, Vela's quality is best served working as a deep-lying attacker rather than fulfilling a lone front-running role which is currently required.

Beyond that the striking cupboard is strikingly bare. For the depth of Wenger's resources is vast, it is mainly built on creative attacking midfielders rather than striking spearheads.

One possible call-up could be for the young French striker Gilles Sunu , who fulfilled the role of lone front-runner for the club's Youth Cup winners last season.

Big, muscular and pacey, he has fans among the club's youth team coaches, but the step-up to the first team is perhaps too big right now. Beyond that, there is plenty of promise but little in the way of match-ready players.

Perhaps then the answer lies not so much in changing the man but changing the system to suit the man. Arsenal are a team built to bring out the best in their attacking flair, yet tweaking their system does not necessarily destroy what they have thus far built this season.

One real possibility for Wenger to consider is the idea of utilising a striker, not so much as an attacking spearhead, but in a position widely termed “the false nine.” This is a position where the centre forward tends to drops deep from their traditional position and therefore becomes harder to mark.

This system was successfully utilised recently by Barcelona last season who played Lionel Messi in such a role, but also Roma under Luciano Spalletti who had Francesco Totti playing as the forward dropping.

It is a system which has it's weaknesses-not least the lack of safe option up front for a defence to clear too when under pressure-but in the circumstances it could well be Arsenal's best option.

When you consider that in the likes of Andrei Arshavin, Abou Diaby, Theo Walcott, Samir Nasri, Tomas Rosicky, plus the aforementioned Eduardo and Vela, finding players creative and adept enough to perform the role adequately will not be an issue, it is a real option to consider. Perhaps then Andrei Arshavin , who performs the role of deep-lying forward behind a front-man with such typical brilliance for Russia, would be a real option to consider.

But whatever the answer may be for Arsenal, their striking problems will certainly require some thinking from their esteemed manager and could be central to their hopes for the season.

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Arsenal: Maturity and Team Spirit Can Overcome November Injury Problems

Same old, same old.

Come November and Arsenal is once again tormented by injuries. With 10 players currently sidelined, it looks like the hard preseason program Wenger introduced at the beginning of the season has not worked to full effect.

The absence of important players such as Robin van Persie, Nicklas Bendtner, Denilson, Theo Walcott, Carlos Vela, Gael Clichy, and several others are surely giving bad headaches to Mr. Wenger.

To top it, Emmanuel Adebayor’s departure in the summer, and the failure to secure a replacement in Bordeaux’ Maruan Chamakh, leaves Wenger with even less choices up front, at least in the coming week or two.

The problem might materialize in the match against current league leaders Chelsea on Nov. 29, where a good result will be very important. It is a hard match for any team and missing some important key players before such fixture is not what any manager would wish to himself.

However, even due to the many similarities, when problems are concerned, with previous seasons, Arsenal’s team looks a bit different as well. And it is exactly where the hope stems from.

Many of the young players have matured. The memory of the 2007/08 season, when Arsenal was able to remain at the top of the table until the very last moment but couldn’t, has surely taught them a lesson.

Denilson is a lot more stable and improved player than then. William Gallas plays better, not feeling the weight of the captain’s armband on his shoulders.

The defense looks capable of dealing with high balls, and there is a lot more chemistry between Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas than there was between Gallas and Toure in that memorable '07/'08 season. Not to mention the nine goals that both defenders have contributed with so far.

Alex Song has emerged a valuable and absolutely adequate candidate for the very demanding, since Patrick Vieira’s departure, position of holding midfielder—a position which many thought would be best filled with spending a large sum of money. Wenger had different thoughts on his mind though.

The changes of tactics from the standard formation of 4-4-2 to a more innovative 4-3-3, as well as the employment of pressure in the oppositional territory, proved to be the right way to get results.

With the absence of a hefty number of attacking type of players though, Wenger would need to improvise to keep the team in the good form it has displayed so far.

Still, there are options—Andrei Arshavin is apt to play as a forward, Vela is coming back for the match against Wolves; Eduardo needs to improve a bit, but nobody would dare to doubt his skills; and Walcott is also set to return soon.

On top of that, and what could be considered as a big improvement from that '07/'08 season, there is the team spirit. With captain Cesc Fabregas, and his stunning array of goals and assists, team-mates would not complain about a lack of inspirational source in the team.

The form of the Arsenal captain can only inspire his teammates to follow his example and push themselves harder to reach his level of play.

Cesc Fabregas’s captaincy is certainly beneficial for the team and that is another difference and improvement from the previous seasons.

While the loss of one of Arsenal’s best players, Robin van Persie, to injury may bring down the spirit of the team a notch, its ability to deal with such situation is unquestionable. The young Gunners have gone through a lot in the recent years and they have shown that they can deal with it.

Six weeks and counting for Van Persie to return to play, and for Eduardo to return to his old deadly form, which I’m sure he will do.

Come November and December, the months in which the wheat is separated from the chaff in the Premier League; Arsenal is prepared.

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Official Arrival of the Arsenal Injury Crisis?

One of the many discussions I have with fellow rival fans, particularly the Liverpool supporters, who always convince themselves that they ARE more than just Gerrard and Torres, is an argument regarding the true impact of injury to various key personnel in the team, and whether this has a telling effect on the team's final standings at the end of the campaign. Speaking of the Liverpool supporters' conviction that they would be in a much healthier position had they had all their star players team fit and available, I find myself swaggeringly downplaying that premise, arguing that a good team and a great club like Liverpool should have the squad depth to cope with absences, and compete at the highest level.

And, sure enough, as I had just absorbed an enthralling World Cup qualifier full of passion and last-minute drama, I heard the news.

The news that will sure have made Gooners' hearts sink to their balls (and elsewhere if you haven't got any). For the first opportunity of a useless international friendly and, with the loss of our talismanic striker to a damaging ankle injury, I was given a sharp reminder of what the Liverpool fans meant by not losing any of your best players. Your very best players.

At the time of writing, all we know of van Persie's injury is that it is enough to have him sidelined for a minimal two months, although the Daily Mail in their infinitely trademark wisdom had initially decided to put out an "out for the season" headline, as if his foot had practically come off! Two months. A potential ten goals and five assists from a man enjoying the form of his life, and climbing his way to becoming one of the world's very best.

With that, it would be natural to think that we are well and truly done for the season's title aspirations, with a grueling Christmas and New Year fixture list to come, including the titanic clash against Chelsea .

This is where we are different from Liverpool , and dare I say it, Chelsea and Manchester United . For Liverpool 's answer to a Torres injury is inauspiciously ineffective in the static Voronin and the immature Ngog, this is where we must demonstrate our quality and strength-in-depth.

And, without the need to reel off a list of possible alternatives to cover for van Persie in the centre forward's position until his welcome return; it is fair to say that the man most likely to benefit from the Dutch wizard's absence is none other than the "fox in the box". It is also fair to say that Eduardo has had a mixed season so far. Having started off with a fruitful cameo at Everton , his reputation was then somewhat tarnished (wrongly) by a desperate Celtic and an ineptly bureaucratic UEFA for a simple fall when in on goal. Since then, it has been difficult to pinpoint the No. 9's form, though, one should point to niggles and the lack of starting opportunities.

However, there is no doubting the man's class and finishing ability, both of which were on display in the Molineux mauling, although Wolves' Jody Craddock irksomely decided to get in the way of his sumptuous lob for our second.

All of which should set him, and ourselves, up for a perfect opportunity to frustrate the parties who will have no doubt celebrated van Persie's crocking, giving him a straight run of games in the Premier League for the first time since his horrific injury in February last year.

van Persie's injury is gutting, and as I mentioned, was enough to considerably spoil my Saturday night; however, the likes of Eduardo have the ability to step up to the plate and accentuate the strength-in-depth that Wenger had built up over the last few years. And now is the time to show it, and save our Premier League dream.

And, as we pray and hope that we avoid a blip associated with this piece of sorry news, one must feel sorry for the man himself. Having rid himself of his petty injury curse, van Persie was finally looking the part, on course to top the goal scoring and assists charts, mirroring his legendary predecessor, Henry, not to mention his endless contribution to the team's link-up play and developing his upper body strength to effectively hold up the ball against stubborn defenses.

The key to success is noting that whilst van Persie's absence will undoubtedly hurt the team, it will not, or at least should not jeopardize us. A clear example of how this is a team sport, and how we can withstand the pressures of competing at the highest level, bearing in mind our long unbeaten run during Fabregas' four-month lay-off last season.

The time is right to give a practical demonstration of our depth and total football, where Eduardo can slot in for van Persie, Diaby for Song, Rosicky for Arshavin, etc. etc. And as van Persie starts his journey back to fitness, the time is right to strengthen the belief that our depth in quality will prevail, whilst at the same time putting Wenger's transfer policy under the microscope. And in that respect, the time is right to right many such wrongs, and give the doubters the perfect response for the impending injury crisis.

A response that simply reads... what crisis?

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Robin Van Placenta and Man Utd vs. Arsenal Squad Comparison, Part 4

All the news today is about Robin.

Mr. Period foot this. Abortion Ankle that.

Sheesh you´d think he´d killed a baby!

Hilarity aside. Robin is off to Serbia - probably to some obscure technological dungeon where they harvest human bodies for energy and use them to power a gigantic city of supermachines.... Wait... That´s the Matrix 3 - What a disappointment!

But SERIOUSLY! Robin has gone to Serbia for some lady to massage Placenta fluid into his bummed ankle. That should be interesting. Apparently it worked for PSV placentaplayer Lazovic, and what´s good for the goose!

News today is Robin is out for 6 weeks. Probably will be mid-January before he is match fit again. If we can cope it without him until after Christmas it might actually be good for us. He might be fresh again for the final leg of the season. Or maybe Sanchez Watt will actually turn into a SatanSpawn and score 4 goals a game for the rest of the season. Or Maybe that´s just the optimist in me trying to tear his way out of the closet.

WHO KNOWS!?

SQUAD COMPARISION - PART 4 - Comparing Centre Strikers

After some discussion in the comments section of one my blogs, I felt it appropriate to do a little squad comparison in which I evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the Man Poo and Arsenal squads and then compared the two teams in 6 different areas, with 1 point available to the team with the better players in each of the 6 areas.

Thus far the battle has been tight. I believe Manchester United to have a better goalkeeper and centre backs, Arsenal to have better wide players and centre midfielders, and the two to have comparable quality in the full back positions.

Therefore the Official Squad Points (TM) are level at 2.5 OSP each. Let´s see how the Striking Showdown turns out, and then I hope you will all give me your educated opinions (Aka. Endless list of hateful profanities) about my analysis over the last 4 UptheArse blogs.

Strikers

Goals, goals, goals. We all love 'em. We all love players who score 'em. And in principle it is the team's strikers who should score their goals. Arsenal an the exception to the rule. Arsenal score goals from everywhere and are averaging 3.2 or 3.7 goals a game this season, or something absolutely retarded. RETARDED! However in recent weeks we have seen our main striker hit form, although he still only has 19.4% of the goals compared to Wayne Rooney's 30.4% of the Utd goals.

Unfortunately RVP has become injured. His foot is hurting him.

Now normally I don't compare squads with injured players, and I don't like to speculate how good squads COULD be if everyone was fit. Injuries happen and you can only work with what you've got.

HOWEVER! I am going to make an exception since Arsenal and Manchester have not played a game since Robin's injury, and because if I do not include Robin van Persie in our list of strikers Manchester United will slaughter us. And I know none of you want to see that happen.

Robin van Persie/ Eduardo/ Bendtner v. Rooney/ Berbatov/ Owen

Arsenal

Well I must admit. When you look at that on paper you have to think. Manchester United all the way. Ok now I know we are playing with a front three, so we could include Walcott or Vela in that list, but fact of the matter is -- those two players haven't played a hell of a lot of football up front for Arsenal FC.

However, I don't like evaluating teams based on paper.

Robin van Persie was/is in the form of his life. He has scored 8 goals and provided 8 assists in 14 appearances for Arsenal this season (7 and 7 in 11 in the league!) That is fucking fantastic. Some of the Dutch players were talking about RVP today and saying that it is sad that he will be miss 6 weeks of Premier League action.

"It's hard for a team, but harder for himself as he has been playing well for the last couple of months and he was one of the best players in the Premier League," said Heitinga.

That's really just it ? He is one of the best players in the Premier League. Full stop.

Eduardo is a bit of an enigma. He is fantastic on his day, but he has been so often injured over the last couple of seasons that it is impossible to know how much he is capable of. One thing is for sure before his injury he was on fire. He was netting tons for Croatia. Forming a good partnership with 'theonewhosenameshallnotbespoken ', and in great form.

He tends to score when he plays, but he hasn't started a hell of a lot of games. HOWEVER again I'm going to say from what I've seen of him for Croatia that he is a serious threat in front of goal, and I have no hesitation about bringing him in for Robin van Persie in my fantasy team.

Bendtner for me, is the one who is going decide this little competition. I think he has played very well this season. He is a 6'3 or 6'4 striker who is not known for his footwork, but he's playing on the wing, and doing a fine job of it.

Last season he was booed repeatedly by our own fans (which is disgraceful behavior) but he got his head down worked hard and ended up being our 2nd or 3rd top scorer with 15. Not bad for a 20/21 year old. I also don't think he necessarily NEEDS to score a huge amount of goals for us. He is wonderful in the air, and he is learning at an exponential rate how to hold up the ball and bring other players into the game. I also think he's got real pace for a big man and I've seen him score some fantastic goals which are just pure pace and power, and some typical CF goals where he uses his aerial ability and finishing prowess to bad a goal. Think against Roma in the CL last year, and against Portugal in World Cup Qualifying.

He like Robin is injured right now, but I don't think it's an injury which is going to keep him out for more than another month. Furthermore, he is certainly not injury prone. I can't recall him being out for more than a couple of games before this little niggle.

Manchester United

Rooney. Well he's pretty good. He's probably in the top 5 strikers in the world. (I think Robin is as well.)

Wayne has also scored 7 in 11 in the league, and 8 in 15. However he has contributed the same amount of assists to his team, and while one may speculate this is because Arsenal score more goals than United, I think it also has to do with the two different player's style of player, and Robin's ability to pick a pass as well as smash the ball into the net.

Rooney also is a wonderful defensive player. So often when CR7/9 was at United you would find Rooney at the edge of his own area doing a heap of defensive work for the team to ensure United kept the lead, or got back in the game.

Robin doesn't do this so much, however I think this is because he is not asked to do this, and not because he would be willing to.

Berbatov - Well as much as it pains me to say. He was a splendid player for Tottenham. He scored buckets of goals, and his elegant play drew comparisons to Eric Cantona. HOWEVER, at Manchester United he has been a disappointed, only showing flashes of the brilliance he is capable of.

Whereas Eduardo hasn't been played much over the last couple of seasons, but has chipped in with a few goals. Berbatov was played week in week out for Manchester United until the end of the season, and only managed to bag 14 in all competitions. It's a poor return for a player who cost 30 million pounds.

This year Eduardo has 3 in 13, but has played mainly off the bench. Whereas Berbatov has started almost all of his 15 games and only managed 4. It's weird to give the advantage to the injured player, but Berbatov has had his opportunities to demonstrate his ability and come up short, often strolling around the pitch pouting and demonstrating little emotion or desire to improve.

Michael Owen may turn out to be the signing of the summer, although I'd say Thommy V will have something definitive to say about that, however I think his biggest contribution to Manchester United's success this season may have already happened.

He, unlike Bendtner, but like Eduardo is injury prone. He spent most of his time for Newcastle in the recovery room, and is yet to demonstrate the form that he showed during his brief stint with Madrid at the Bernabeu.

He has scored 4, most of which off the bench and Bendtner has scored 3 and provided an assist. Comparable figures, but the two players are not comparable figures.

However, Bendtner is 21, 6´4 powerhouse who has been forced to play out of position in a role which he´s never played before this season, whereas Michael Owen is an injury prone 29 goal poacher who´s entering the twilight of his career.

I know who I´d rather have who you would you rather have right now? (Today´s question)

Verdict

I think Rooney v. Van Persie is pretty much a toss up. I think both of them are perfect for their respective teams, and I think they will score a similar amount of goals come the end of the season (despite Robin´s forthcoming injury absence).

Eddie and Berba are both kind of anomoly´s and I think as it stands, they cancel each other out, however I think when Eduardo is fit he is the player I would rather have in my team perhaps on the basis of attitude alone (but also considering the price of these two players, and the fact that Berbatov has had numerous chances to prove to us he can be a Man Utd great)

Bendtner wins it for me against Michael Owen. Owen is historical a better player, and Bendtner has been booed in his career, but I think the best is yet to come from Nicky B whereas Owen is past his prime and I would be surprised if he reaches 15 goals this season.

Official Squad Points (TM) Final Score

Arsenal 3.5 - Manchester United 2.5

Later Gooners,

How Do You Rate the Arsenal Forwards' Performances So Far This Season?

What can be considered the strongest aspect of 2008/2009, the Arsenal forwards have continued their strong run into 2009/2010. The new formation has meant more goals, and it has also enabled there to be three up front.

Despite the departure of Emmanuel Adebayor, Arsenal still has a strong in the air forward line. Arsene Wenger has always boasted an impressive forward run since his arrival at Arsenal, and it is no different now.

How do you rate their performances thus far?

Eduardo Da Silva: 7

His season started with controversy after a diving incident, but has kept his head, and been a useful threat on the winger. Although not a huge amount of goals to brag about, the Croatian has still been heavily involved in Arsenal's recent good form.

Carlos Vela: N/A

Injuries and Wenger's selection woes have seen the promising Mexican receive very little opportunity, which is disappointing as he is a glorious talent. We may witness the youngster go out loan during January.

Sanchez Watt: N/A

The teenager has shown glimpses of a Thierry Henry like striker. Although he has only been used in the League Cup, he is still very promising, and fans are excited about the further opportunities he should receive.

Gilles Sunu: N/A

Like Watts has only been used in the League Cup, but did allow us a glimpse of what the French teenager has to offer in the future.

Nicklas Bendtner: 6.5

A few lackluster performances evened up with a few strong ones. Has scored a couple of stunning goals so far, but was recently hit with a groin injury. Will be eager to live up to the hype he is creating.

Robin van Persie: 8

The Arsenal Player of the Season last campaign has continued his impressive run of form, scoring many and assisting many.

He has established himself as a vital part of the Arsenal attack with his ability to create and open up play.

Sadly, and even more frustratingly, he was hit with an injury during an international friendly and is expected to be out for at least seven weeks.

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Comparing Manchester United and Arsenal, Part Three

Dear all,

Please forgive me.

I shouldn´t have been lazy.

I shouldn´t have tested the fates.

I should have finished my article comparing the Arsenal and Manchester United squads.

I said last week that I would be doing a squad comparison because there was no competitive Arsenal football and therefore not really much to talk about.

Way to tempt the fates, Adam. Especially with Holland playing fucking Italy. Robin playing those smelly defensive bastards.

Now we've got something to talk about don´t we! So apologies. I´m sorry guys. I´ll take the blame for this one if you like.

Robin´s Inury

It was an unlucky one, I don´t think there was any malice. I was just one of those "footbally" injuries. They happen all the time.

I had a similar incident a couple of weeks back when I was playing Gaelic football in Holland (although I was luckier, and the other guy was more idiotic as sliding tackles are generally not allowed ever in Gaelic football [especially when I had already beat my man and the ball was in my hands and not on the floor]).

You just get a big knock right into the side of your foot/ankle, your fankle if you will, my ligaments stayed together for the most part, whereas Robin's have apparently ripped a little bit.

Now I don't expect you guys have to even an iota of sympathy for me (I've since recovered only two weeks later and although I would love it, Arsenal's title hopes do not partially rest on my left peg).

But I suppose I'm just stating that I know how the injury feels (it fucking hurts) but if he doesn't require surgery then its a good sign and he might be back quicker than we thought.

If it was anyone it was probably going to be Robin, although an injury like this isn't really an injury one picks up if they are injury prone. It is just an impact injury that can happen to anyone. Unfortunately it happened to one of our best players. LINK

Step up Eddie, Step up Nicky B, get off the bench Carlos V, get off the bench... ummmm... Wally (Theo) We need you to lead the line with presence and pizzazz.

Other International News

We had some other players playing in some other matches this weekend. Gallas and Sagna contributed to Ireland's demise which I wasn't really pleased about.

Neither of them had a particularly good game, but they did what needed to be done to beat the resilient Irish.

Needless to say (but I'm going to say it anyway) we're pretty fucked for this tie. It would be a miracle if we managed to score in France, and not concede.

There is a lot of talk after the performance of Aaron Ramsey against Scotland. Apparently he was full of creativity and genius in the first half. Lot of talk about him being the Second Cesc (say that 5 times fast) and while that would be lovely, I think he's a little different than Cesc.

He's got more pace and power than Cesc had when he was 18, and probably a little less Cesc composure. Dare I say it, but I see a little Gerrard in the lad.

His goal was a good one, I didn't notice but the commentator makes an keen observation that Ramsey beats his man at the edge of the box without touching the ball by just changing the angle of his body. That is silky stuff. LOOKY

Verm scored against Hungary...from a set piece.

What a beast. LOOKY

Andrey played against Slovenia and his team won 2-1 at home. It is a good result, but not a great one.

I wouldn't be surprised if Slovenia managed a 1-0 win at home and went through. I know fuck all about their team but they did well to get past Poland and Czech in their group (granted both teams are in decline, but still).

Anyway, Everton signing Bilyaletdinov stole the show there scoring both goals [Hmmmm...I wonder how much he is in fantasy football].

So today, I'm going to talk about the wide players for Manchester United and Arsenal, and tomorrow finish off with our strikers.

I want to get this squad comparison out of the way before Wednesday in case I cast a hex on any more of our players, by not evaluating them BEFORE they could potentially get injured.

SQUAD COMPARISON PART 3

Wide Players

Arshavin/ Nasri/ Theo/ Vela/ Wilshire v. Giggs/ Valencia/ Nani/ Obertan/ Ji-Sung Park

Arsenal

First and foremost, Andrey; He's a fucking fantastic talent. He would be in my Premiership 11. I think he would probably be in most people's Premiership 11. Simply put. He is the best on the left in the league.

He's pacey, has exceptional balance, a fantastic eye for goal, and is capable of hitting a 40 yard pass on the money, smashing a ball into the top corner from outside the box with either foot, or dancing and dangling past his man and placing the ball into the roof of the net.

What a guy! He talks a lot, but I like it. It's always very entertaining and I think generally spot fucking on.

Nasri had a good debut season for Arsenal and didn't really require much time to adapt to the English game becoming the third Arsenal player to score on his debut under Arsene Wenger (I hope that's right).

He chipped in with his fair share of goals and I think was exciting when played on the left and determined when played centrally. There was talk last year about playing him as a DM but I think/ hope that this idea is dead and buried.

He's just too skillful and too much of a goal threat to be running around the centre of the park trying to break up play. I think on the right he'd do a job for us. A very good job in fact.

Every now and then, he could switch it up with Arshavin and as we saw last year...he's not afraid to track back and do the defensive work, too.

Theo is an enigma. I like him. I really do. You just can't dislike someone with that much raw pace. He's definitely the quickest player on team and arguably the quickest player in the league (although Mr. Lennon [Aaron not John] might have something to say about that), and from what I've seen, he is a tidy little finisher.

Think Hatrick v. Croatia. Think Carling Cup final against Chelsea.

Unfortunately he's spent most of the last 12 months pretty injured. It's very unfortunate in fact, I thought last season before he did his shoulder he was one of our best players.

He always looked dangerous, his touch and final ball had improved significantly. And most importantly he was growing in confidence (although not in stature...short little fecker).

Vela...I'm putting him out wide. He's probably not really a winger. But he's also very rarely played through the middle in the last three seasons, having played wide left for Osasuna, and played very rarely at ALL for Arsenal in the last two seasons.

We all know what he can do when given a chance against lesser opposition, but during his substitute Champions League appearances and limited league action he's done very little.

I think the ability is there for everyone to see, and particularly after Robin's ankle injury we are all hoping that Mr. Sail (Vela is Spanish for Sail) can make a quick recovery and give us some fucking Spicy Salsa football at the Emirates...Mexican God that he is.

Jack Wilshire - Jack the Lad - English Messi - The Jack Attack - The Stevenage Savage - Most of those nicknames are made up, but I think most of them could also be fitting descriptions of a player who will SURELY make his mark on English football.

Sometimes you just see a player with vision, a turn of pace, and just that little bit of magic that people can only dream of. I'm just soooo thankful we have this player on our team and that he has come through OUR youth ranks.

I don't usually like to comment about players who are out of action, or who haven't done much of anything, but Wilshire is just too exciting not to tip for great things. I mean seriously, he was the best fucking player on the pitch in both Emirates Cup games this pre-season.

He was a little genius - I think he might be Jesus in disguise, but I don't want to put too much expectation on the young lad's shoulders.

The question on the tip of everyone's tongue is... Why isn't Wenger playing him more?

I don't disagree with Wenger's decision actually. Normally when I see a special player who is young I say, throw him in there and just let him play. Play him even when he plays poorly, it's the only way the lad is going to learn.

But Jack is only 17 and this is a World Cup year. I think the last thing Wenger wants is another Walcott situation. I have to say here and now that I think the WC 2006 was a bad thing for Theo Walcott.

Everyone was tipping him as the next Michael Owen and he wasn't even given a chance in Deutschland. Not even against Trinidad. Apparently that's HOW BAD he was in training, and apparently the other England potentials weren't happy about his inclusion.

I'm not saying this will happen to Jack. I don't think Capello would call him up anyway, but I think with someone AS YOUNG and Special as Jack it is important that we harvest every ounce of potential for this potentially brilliant boy.

ANYWAY...Where was I again? OHHHH Ya, comparing Arsenal to the Cuntbags.

Manchester United

Giggs is a god. If you're not a frequent reader, check out the Day 31 blog about Ryan "Jesus" Giggs. He's been great again this season for Manchester United. I think earlier in the year he had something like 5 assists and 2 goals in 3 games. And how old is he? 84?

Ok he's not running down the left wing beating 5 of our players and smashing the ball into the roof of the net in the FA Cup Semi final anymore. Fucking hairy chested motherfucker.

But he's has changed his game and used his developed footballing brain to continue to play at the highest level. Just slower.

Valencia is a player who I'm not too fond of. I think he's decent, but I don't think he's good enough to be a Manchester United player. I think he's just an old-fashioned winger.

He'll do a trick, drop the shoulder, beat his man to the line and put in a decent cross, but he doesn't give you a goal threat and I don't think he changes the dynamic of the game.

Furthermore, he has some pretty fucking huge boots to fill and thus far he has been distinctly average.

United fans will say he needs time to adapt to the team, but It's three months into the season and he's been playing in England in a 4-4-2 for three years. I'm sure one of the reasons Ferguson bought him was so that he could make a quick transition into the United team and that he wouldn't need 6 months to a year to get up to speed with English football.

I would be disappointed with Valencia for 18 million as a United fan. Good thing I'm a Gooner and I can chuckle to myself saying we got AA for the same price.

Nani: He is shit. That will be all.

Obertan: He looks tricky, he looks exciting, and he looks confident. Once again I don't want to start talking about Obertan taking the EPL by storm after two fucking appearances, but he's definitely got some magic in those feet, and he looks like he is ready to take his opportunity for Manchester United.

HOWEVER, he also doesn't look like he is trying to force the issue like Mr. Granny. He knows when to make the five-yard lateral pass and when to take on his man.

It looks like he knows that every time he touches the ball, he doesn't need to show Alex the Rednosed Scotsman that he's a talented player.

Ji-Sung Park: I like him. I think he's good in big matches. He never stops running, and while I can't remember him scoring (at least not intentionally) I think his contribution to United's football matches is a positive one.

He was bought to sell T-shirts, but I think he has given Manchester United more than just COMMERCIAL value.

Verdict:

Arsenal, and it's not very close. Manchester United's best winger is 35 and can't play twice a week.

He will play a big part in Manchester United's season, but he won't start every match, and his net contribution to his team for this season will probably be less than Arshavin's.

Looking past the best winger for each team, I also think that Arsenal have got more exciting options in their creative positions. I think Nasri is better than Valencia. I think he's more of a goal threat, I think he does more work for the team.

I think he's classier. And I know that he is younger. I also think that Nasri can switch wings, or drop into the middle of the park if we need, whereas I think Valencia is pretty going to hug that righthand touchline until 2013.

Theo is an exciting player, and I think him and Obertan and both filled with oodles of potential.

But while Walcott has made 80 runs and beaten four men to set up a fantastic goal in the CL quarter-final against Liverpool. Obertan has made two appearances for United and was hardly instrumental in the title-winning season for Bordeaux last year.

Nani is shit and probably scores United negative points in this category because if you play with him in your team you have already resigned yourself to the fact that at least 3-7 times that game Nani is going to blast the ball into Row Z or the goalkeeper's hands from 25-45 yards out.

Wilshire is a phenom and United don't have anyone in their reserves half as exciting as him.

Vela is unproven at the highest level, but has demonstrated in the Carling Cup that his capable of some special things.

Ji-Sung is a good player, and I think his net impact on a game is generally positive rather than negative. However he isn't going to win you many matches, and is certainly not going to win you the league.

Let me know what your thoughts are?

Today's Question?

Pretty simple, I couldn't put my finger on who the best Right Winger in the Premiership was when I was comparing these two squads today.

I think all of us can agree than when CR7/9 was in England he was hands down the best player, nevermind best right-sided player. However, since he's swapped red for white, who do you think takes the cake?

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Who Is Arsenal's Most Underrated Player?

It is something that occurs on every team on the planet. There will alway's be a player who consistently and constantly gives 100 percent, barely putting a foot wrong but sadly receiving little or no credit for their effort.

Meanwhile, the so-called superstars who lack the consistency of the underrated performer reap success off a couple of good performances.

Arsenal is a team that has many underrated players whose efforts are overshadowed by what Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas or Andrei Arshavin produced.

Who do you think is Arsenal's most overrated player?

Bacary Sagna

The French defender arrived at the Emirates in 2007 from French side Auxerre. Since his move to the Premier League, Sagna has been an outstanding performer, primarily at right back.

The 26 year old is one of the most consistent, best defenders, and most underrated players in the footballing world. With Arsenal playing sensational attacking football that ensures a host of goals, Sagna's contribution is overshadowed.

Denilson

Last season was a huge turning point in the Brazilian's career. The 21 year old was Arsenal's most capped player for the 2008/2009, although many of the season plaudits went the way of van Persie, Arshavin, Nasri and Fabregas. Many forget about the sensational efforts from a young Samba star.

Denilson established himself in the "invisible wall" role and also stepped up when Cesc Fabregas was injured for three months. Denilson was still at a young age and showed maturity and skill of a experienced midfielder.

Gael Clichy

Since the departure of Ashley Cole, Gael Clichy has not looked back securing the left back role and becoming one of the world's strongest left backs. Clichy is a speedy and powerful left back who is also a very capable and useful attacker.

His contribution's in attack and defence, however, usually go unnoticed.

Alexandre Song

Last season we witnessed Alexandre Song make the step up into the Arsenal's first XI. Although he received heavy criticism for lack of defensive performances, many of his strong performances went unnoticed.

This season Song has gained from his experience, learnt from his mistakes and matured greatly. He is now a consistent defensive midfielder. Not only does he chop down the opposing midfield attacks, he also tracks back magnificently allowing his defenders to venture forward and attack.

Aaron Ramsey

Since coming to the Gunners as a highly promising teenager, the Welshman has only be granted a handful of opportunities. But recently the teenager has began to show he deserves more chances. The youngster has matured since arriving to North London in 2008 and looks set to break into the first team.

Ramsey is talented midfielder who has been linked to a younger Johan Cruyff with his ability to open and create play.

Johan Djourou

Despite picking up a agonising injury forcing him out off the 2009-2010 campaign, Johan Djourou is a worthy candidate. Djourou managed a relatively injury-free season last campaign and many fail to realise how well the Swiss performed.

He was a credible deputy to the likes of William Gallas and Kolo Toure. The 22 year old was a good clearer, and his height and strength were vital at certain times.

Emmanuel Eboue

Last season was not the greatest of seasons for the Ivorian. Booed by his own fans and a number of lackluster display's almost saw the departure of the versatile African.

However, Eboue remained at the club for 2009/2010 and has since been a useful attribute to the Arsenal squad. Thanks to his versatility, Eboue can play just about anywhere.

Eboue is a great impact player from the bench with his pace, balance and ability to weave through opponents. His strong defensive ability allow Bacary Sagna to have a break mid week and stay fresh and fit. All round he is an incredibly useful option.

So who do you think is the most underrated player at Arsenal?

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Robin Van Persie International Duty Injury Signals Disaster For Arsenal

In-form Arsenal striker Robin van Persie was stretched off just 15 minutes into Holland’s international friendly with Italy last night after a challenge by Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini.

Initial reports suggest van Persie sustained a serious ankle injury, with Holland’s head coach Bert van Marwijk indicating the Gunner may have torn the ligaments in his ankle. Goal.com has reported that the Dutchman may face up to three months on the sidelines.

If that is true it will be a hammer-blow to Arsenal’s title ambitions. In that period Arsenal face tough games against Chelsea, Liverpool, Aston Villa (twice), Everton, and Manchester United. All this in a period that Arsenal have struggled in recent seasons, the cold winter months and a packed schedule in January.

To make matters worse Arsenal face Chelsea and Liverpool again within three days of one another in the first week of February. If van Persie is out for three months, it is unlikely he will be fully fit for either of those games.

Van Persie has been a revelation for Arsenal this season, emerging from the shadow of Emmanuel Adebayor to lead Arsenal into second place in the Premier League table. Just as Thomas Vermaelen has quashed fans initial fears surrounding the exit of Kolo Toure, van Persie has done the same for the departing Toga international.

Injuries can and do occur to all major sides, if you are vying for silverware in the modern era, then you need to be able to sustain injuries to key players. Chelsea have lost Frank Lampard, and they sustained a title challenge last season without the services of Michael Essien and Joe Cole for much of the campaign.

It seems that Arsenal are the unluckiest of the bunch though, wherever the Gunners appear to be the thinnest on the ground is where they tend to pick up injuries. In addition to van Persie, Arsenal are also currently without Nicklas Bendtner, Theo Walcott, and Carlos Vela.

Add to that the slow return to form of Eduardo da Silva and you’ve got the recipe for a reliance on a certain Dutch maestro.

If the injury is as serious as it first seems then Arsenal will become heavily dependent on the Brazilian-born Croatian to keep their season alive. Eduardo certainly has the talent, but he has missed many chances in recent weeks—an unerring sight considering his finishing ability before his own ankle injury.

There is no doubt that a fully fit Eduardo is more than capable of replacing van Persie in Arsenal’s current system, but we are entering the fourth month of the season and Dudu has only registered three times for the Gunners.

More worryingly, he has only scored once in the Premier League this season.

The talent is definitely there. Ironically, the rumour mill had been linking Eduardo with a £10million move to Liverpool—due to his apparent upset about being moved onto the flank and lack of opportunities up front. Even if this is true, he’ll have no such complaints in the coming months.

This valuation is despite his current goal scoring drought and his contract having only 18 months left to run; clearly he is a man whose ability is still highly rated.

Arsene Wenger must be feeling a renewed sense of disgust at the international friendly calendar. It’s enough to make him want to wrap Alex Song in cotton wool and bubble wrap. Along with his initial disdain may well be a deeper feeling of regret, what he would do to have a Marouane Chamakh to call upon in the coming months.

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Who Becomes Arsenal Central Striker With Van Persie and Bendtner Out?

Arsenal were sent crashing down to earth when the news that their in-form Dutch striker Robin van Persie had torn a ligament in an international friendly.

The Dutchman was playing for Holland against Italy and when tackled in the 14th minute pain immediately took to his face.

The talented scorer was strectched off the field and is expect to be out for a minimum of 2 months.

This huge blow only means another name to the ever-growing list of injured Arsenal players.

Arsenal have been in stunning form with van Persie playing a major role as the lone striker. The 26 year old is one of the main leaders in the young Arsenal squad and is vital in creating and opening up play.

The injury now leaves a gaping hole with who should become the lone striker. Usually the role would be bestowed towards lanky Dane Nicklas Bendtner, but he too is injured. So who should receive the central forward role?

Eduardo Da Silva

Since his horrific injury in 2008, the Croatian forward has made a strong and successful comeback to the Arsenal first team.

This season Wenger has primarily used the Brazilian-born striker as a winger but with van Persie and Bendtner injured, Eduardo may be given the central role.

The 26 year old is a quick and tricky striker with great movement and a vicious finish. He has the rare talent of being icy cool when in front of goal.

Andrei Arshavin

Although primarily a winger, the little Russian is capable of being a devastating center forward. Although not the biggest on the pitch, the Russian magican is certainly one of the deadliest, and the footballing world knows he can score goals.

Putting him as a center forward would not be the worst idea. The 28 year old has a lethal finish and is blessed with speed and intelligence.

Theo Walcott

The England star is close to returning for the Gunners and this could be a sensational chance to prove himself as a central striker. The pacey Englishman has highlighted that he wants to play as a center forward and with two main strike forces out for Wenger, why not Walcott?

The 20-year-old's devastating pace would cause huge problems down the middle and his ability to finish is also a huge feature.

Carlos Vela

The Mexican international is arriving back from injury and will need a week to settle in, but this is a chance for the 20-year-old to establish himself in the first team.

The youngster has a huge future but needs experience to grow, and at this rate he is lacking sufficent experience. He is a capable center forward who has tricks, pace and balance to ensure goals come his way.

So who should become the new center forward whilst Robin van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner are treated for injuries?

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com

Ars Bandeet and Other Funny Names from the Wonderful World of Football

Never heard of Ars Bandeet? How about Einar Aas? No? Well everyone's heard of Segar Bastard, haven't they? For every Diego and Pele, there has been an Ars or an Aas. Here are a couple of the greatest names ever to grace a football pitch.

Well we started with the great Ars Bandeet , so a little explanation so you know the name isn't just made up.

Back in the '70s the legendary Ars Bandeet played for Algeria. I'm not too sure he was that legendary a player, but his name is a classic that time will never forget, or at least the inter-web.

Segar Bastard : Played his football in the early 1900s in England, he was also a referee. Which brings new meaning to the chant, "the referee's a bastard," and well, yes he was.

Einar Aas: The first Norweigan to play football in England after Brian Clough signed him from Bayern Munich in 1981. Incidentally, "ein" is one in German, one can only guess at what Aas means...

Francisco Arce: Nothing too funny with being called Francisco, Arce could be construed as something else though. And when your nickname is "Chiqui" Arce ...

Francisco had a 17 year professional career in Paraguay and played in a couple of World Cups before retiring in 2006 while playing with 12 October . Now that's a great team name too.

Arsene Wenger manages Arsenal and one of his best players is Andrei Arshavin . You just can't make something like that up. Bloody good player though.

Creedance Clearwater Couto : The Brazilian plies his trade in Belgium with SK Lierse. And other than his parents having good taste in music, little else is known about the elusive striker.

Steve Death : Other than being a Reading legend, having played 471 times for the Royals. Death set a great record in 1979 where he did not concede a goal for over 1,000 minutes. The record was only broken last year by Edwin van Der Sar of Manchester United.

Robin Friday: The greatest player you never saw was also at Reading with the great Steve. From kidnapping swans to defecating in opponents kit bags, Friday was one of a kind. Click here to read a little more about Robin Friday.

That Reading team of the late '70s just won't go away. Wayne Wanklyn was a nippy winger who was also in the same team. You just don't get that kind of symmetry anymore, except at Arsenal.

Wolfgang Wolf: The great Wolf had a 17 year career as a player in Germany with the likes of Kaiserslautern and Stuttgart berfore he moved into management with Nuremburg, Stuttgart, Kaiserslautern, and yes you guessed it, Wolfsburg !!

Danny Shittu: Daniel Olusola Shittu is a Nigerian footballer who has played in England since the late '90s. He's a big, tough, no nonsense kind of guy and you wouldn't like to come up against him in an aggro. Great second name though, made all the better when you realise that "Olusola" means "God creates wealthy" Shittu ...

Anthony Philip David Terry Frank Donald Stanley Gerry Gordon Stephen James Oatway: Yep you read that right. "Charlie Oatway" as he was otherwise known as played for whole series of lower English league teams between 1993 and 2009.

And just in case you're wondering how he ended up with such a strange name...his parents named him after the 1973 QPR team. The "Charlie" part came into it when his aunty reckoned he looked like a "big time Charlie" as a baby. Charming.

Neville Neville: Father of Gary and Phil Neville.

Two-Boys Gumede: Nippy South African forward who is currently playing for the UAB Blazers in America.

Argelico Fucks: The Brazilian centre half's career started in 1992 in Japan, before he moved between Portugal and Brazil. It was here with Palmeiras that he put in a series of eye catching performances before he was snapped up by Benfica. It was this move that sparked EuroSport into action and the "Fucks off to Benfica" headline has now reached legendary status.

Dominique Dropsy: If there was ever an unfortunately named goalkeeper it is the aforementioned Dropsy. Although he wasn't as bad as his name suggests. His pro career lasted for 20 years and he received 17 caps for France, including playing in the World Cup in 1978.

Danny Diver: Was a Scottish striker who played for an incredible 18 teams during his 21 year career. Obviously he wasn't the most patient of fellows.

Kevin Prince Boateng: OK, so it's not as good as some as the previous names on the list, but any German that called his son Prince deserves to be mentioned.

Well, there's a small sample of some of the greatest names to ever grace a pitch, and if guy's called Willie can write about dudes called Ars and Aas and Fucks, well, the world is a great great place.

How Do You Rate the Arsenal Midfielders' Performances So Far This Season?

Last season, alongside the defence, the Arsenal midfield suffered heavy criticism for being unable to be dominant defenders, handle physicality, and failing to keep consistency.

This season, it's another story. The Arsenal midfield has displayed some superb defending and attacking performances, and are looking like a whole different bunch of players that took to the field last season.

The attack is what is blossoming for their mid-men. Playing fast, exciting, one touch football has ensured more chances and more goals are created. Also, the defensive side of the midfield has improved thanks to mostly the efforts of Alexandre Song. So how do you rate the Arsenal midfielders so far?

Alexandre Song: 8

Last season the Cameroon midfielder suffered the most criticism out of any of the Arsenal midfielders. But come this season, Song is a completely different player who carries the defensive role of the Arsenal midfield.

He is a vital part of the Arsenal midfield, constantly chopping down opposing midfield threats and also tracking back tremendously, relieving pressure on his back four.

A superb effort so far.

Francis Coquelin: N/A

Only limited chances in the League Cup, but it is evident he has massive potential to be the next big defensive midfielder.

Craig Eastmond: N/A

Made his debut this season and was not to shabby. Another teenage with a big future.

Abou Diaby: 7

An awful start to the season which resulted in fans calling for his head. But the lanky Frenchmen worked hard and is finally beginning to find his feet, keep fit, and hopefully play the football fans know he is capable of.

Denilson: 6

An injury was sadly bestowed on him early on, and he has not featured since September. Fortunately he is due back after the international break and will look to continue the unsung hero role in the midfield.

Mark Randall: N/A

Some strong contributions in the League Cup, but you feel he should be out on loan.

Aaron Ramsey: 7

The Welshman has matured a bunch and is now looking to break into the first team. There is a hint of Fabregas about his style, and the youngster has a huge future ahead of him.

Samir Nasri: 6.5

Was struck down with injury before the season began, but made a strong comeback reminding the footballing world how talented and dangerous he really is.

Tomas Rosicky: 7

A enjoyable and successful return for the Czech after being on the sideline for over a year. Looks to be close to that quick, dangerous, and intelligent midfield every one witnessed a couple of years ago.

Theo Walcott: N/A

Injury has forced the pacey Englishman to miss a heap of games for the Gunners, but in the limited chances whe he was fit, we witnessed how devastating he can be.

Andrei Arshavin: 7

The Russian magican has been a constant thorn in opposition defences. Swift movement and smart play has seen him score some highly impressive goals.

Jack Wilshere: N/A

In a few games for the teenage prodigy we were gifted a few glimpses of what to expect of this huge talent.

Fran Merida: 6.5

Signed a long-term deal and finally looks to be breaking onto the bench. The young Spaniard scored a phenomenal goal in the League Cup and also showed glimpses of Fabregas/Arshavin like play.

Nacer Barazite: N/A

Very limited opportunity, and I feel Wenger may be hampering his development.

Cesc Fabregas: 9

The Captain has been a incredible leader and a influential in Arsenal's early dominance. He scored sensational goals, set up sensational goals, and lead terrifically. Quite frankly he the best.

Loaners

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas: 6.5

The teenager has been an impressive force whilst away with Blackpool. Has great strength, pace an power and could feature in the Arsenal League Cup run.

Henri Lansbury: 6.5

Has shown he is a talented midfielder. Scored a couple of goals, and is playing creative, easy on the eye football.

Read more Arsenal news on BleacherReport.com
