Montreal Canadiens: Mike Cammalleri As Captain, Anyone?

As the Montreal Canadiens’ famous day of December 4th is drawing closer; there is one thing that is still missing—yes, apart from a winning team, a Captain.

The General Manager and the head coach want to take their time to assess each possible candidate so they make the right choice. But if we keep the current pace, we might end up days away from the trade deadline still with three As.

A few weeks ago, we have approached a few possibilities.

Despite a much scrutinized arrival with the team, Scott Gomez now seems to be carrying the weight of his contract.

A very confused Peter Parker once had to learn that “with great power comes great responsibility.” Equally, Gomez now knows that with a great paycheque comes great scrutiny.

And if you fail to impress fans with marvellous puck handling and restless efforts; you fall into the other category: the “mistake” category.

That is when you make your boss and the organization look bad; but you are the one under the spotlight at the moment so you take the hit.

Right before his injury, Gomez was on a five game dry streak. Count in the game against Toronto and make it six. This season, he has 11 points in 23 games. Glen Metropolite has 12 in 21!

At 27 games, we are closing the first third of the season. His salary divided by three, Gomez should be making around $2.6 million. With his stats, it would come down to around $236,000 per point.

Let’s say the team names Gomez as Captain. With all the fuss he is already undergoing for his slow season start, pressure will double in size and cruelty in no time. As the ultimate voice and face of this team, it will be as if he had to build a gigantic ship to save us all from 2012!

Come to think of it, it is almost what Gainey is expecting from Carey Price.

Personally, I would suggest Mike Cammalleri.

A few weeks ago, the head coach Jacques Martin had nothing else but words of praise towards the 5’9” left wing. “He understands what it takes to play here. He loves the Canadiens and he takes it very seriously” said the coach.

Alright, anyone on this team could be applicable to that declaration; probably even Sergei Kostitsyn.

But if we are looking for that one player who could step up on the ice as he can do in the room; it might be him.

Let’s take the game against the Washington Capitals last Saturday.

Different opinions and perspectives were used to analyze that game. On one side, we can say that such a crimpled team has been able to steal a point to the amazing Capitals. Let’s call it a good psychological victory.

And then, there is the Cammalleri’s point of view. He expressed how the team has been battling for the win. Not zero point, not one point; but two.

Of course that is the very least to expect from athletes, to win. But he could just have simply said “we are proud of what we have done, and we will keep on working hard.”

Cammalleri brings in that go getter attitude; the one that says ‘get the win, screw the rest.’

Now that the infirmary is starting to clear up, probably that Gainey and Martin’s decision process will too.

This article has been done with pieces of information from RDS.ca, Yahoo!Sports

Read more Guy Carbonneau news on BleacherReport.com
