UConn-Duke: A Matchup Worth Watching

Tonight the Connecticut Huskies will take on the Duke Blue Devils in the final of the NIT Season Tip-Off championship game at Madison Square Garden. It will feature the first matchup in history of two coaches who both have 800 wins to their names.

There is no doubt Jim Calhoun and Mike Krzyzewski are two of the best coaches of all-time. Calhoun, who has two national titles, and Krzyzewski, who has three, are the only active coaches, alongside Florida's Billy Donovan, who have multiple national championships at their respective schools.

The Huskies started out the season sluggish, to say the least. The intensity and drive wasn't present for a full 40 minutes. They would go through spurts of offensive inefficiency and lackluster rebounding.

Their first three games versus William and Mary, Cornell, and Hofstra were far from stellar. It drew Calhoun's criticism, and his players responded Wednesday in the Garden.

That was LSU, and this is Duke. A totally different scene, and although UConn has won the last four matchups against Duke, they have not met since the National Semifinal in 2004.

UConn is going to have to be active in defending the perimeter. Duke loves to shoot the ball from the outside, and it is something they do extremely well. Freshman Andre Dawkins has made 14 threes this season off the bench.

Guard Jon Scheyer has made 12 three-pointers early on this season. His senior leadership is going to be needed for Duke to be victorious in this early season battle.

The two players on whom UConn is going to have to play lockdown defense are Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith. Both juniors, these two have the experience and athleticism to take control of a close game. How UConn handles these two players could play a factor in the outcome.

What UConn must do to win this game is rebound. Early season struggles were how UConn played on the boards. Alex Oriakhi is going to have to remain playing strong down low. He is averaging 10.5 rebounds this season. The battle on the boards will be won only if Oriakhi can remain aggressive.

Also down low, Gavin Edwards is coming off one of his strongest games at UConn. Wednesday night he played a team-high 35 minutes, scored 15 points, and grabbed nine rebounds. He must play to another level against Miles Plumlee and Brian Zoubek.

UConn's biggest weapons are the players that have been in these big game situations. Stanley Robinson has continued to be a force on the glass, and in the lane. His leadership is imperative to how the Huskies play game after game.

The battle with the guards could be the difference maker. UConn will have Kemba Walker and Jerome Dyson to lead the way for the Huskies.

Walker could be one of the quickest players from coast to coast in America. His speed is an asset in transition and on defense. He is from the Bronx, and always has an extra spark when he is playing in the Big Apple.

Jerome Dyson is back and better than ever. He has the skills to go off at any point during a game. He is leading the team in scoring with 20 points per game; look for him to make huge contributions as the season moves on.

Just remember that the Huskies are playing without a key player in Ater Majok, who is ineligible until Dec. 22. Once UConn gets him back, that will solidify the rotation as he is highly considered to be a playmaker.

This will certainly be a stiff test for the Huskies. Even though it is early, this should give an indication of what competition the Huskies and Blue Devils both face down the road.

There is nothing like a Big East versus ACC battle for bragging rights. This is one game you don't want to miss.

Connecticut Football Takes Center Stage vs. Notre Dame

This is the week that all UConn football fans have been waiting for. Through trial, tribulation, and heartbreakers time and time again this season, a win this week would help tremendously in keeping the Huskies slim bowl hopes alive.

Zach Frazer will enter Notre Dame Stadium and lead the Huskies out on the field against the team and coach that recruited him all throughout high school. He understands the significance of this game.

Notre Dame on the other hand has been on a free fall of late. Head coach Charlie Weis' job security is uncertain and a lose this week to a young Connecticut program could doom his time in South Bend.

Of course there is the mystique and lust of playing against Notre Dame, but this is a game for the UConn to show the nation who they really are. Notre Dame has lost to teams that it is supposed to beat, and sure could happen again this week.

The execution of Notre Dame has not been the same in recent history. Charlie Weis had built a team this season that many thought had the potential to contend at the national level. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Head coach, Randy Edsall has had to deal with much more then just wins and losses this season. The death of a player, Jasper Howard, shocked the UConn community.

Edsall just wants his team to go out and execute the game plan. UConn played every game tight down the stretch this season. It's crazy to think this team has only four wins and has lost five games.

UConn's five losses were by a COMBINED 15 Points!

Staggering to say the least.

Then again at the end of the day it is all about winning, when the clock strikes zero. There is no question this is the game UConn has had circled on its calendar all year long. No matter what the record of Notre Dame is, it is still Notre Dame football.

Connecticut will take center stage and to defeat the storied program of Notre Dame, would be a remarkable accomplishment after the season UConn has been through.

UConn Basketball Looks To Repeat Success

Calhoun and his players are ready to embark on another season that hopefully ends up in the final four.

This season the Connecticut Huskies return a core nucleus of players led by Stanley Robinson, Jerome Dyson, and Kemba Walker. This trio, along with a core nucleus of freshman hope to provide a combination that leads to success in the Big East.

Tomorrow night, the Huskies officially open up the season against William and Mary. Calhoun has been impressed with his team's performance in both exhibition games.

Combo guard Jamal Combs-McDaniels is supposed to be cleared for play come Friday night. This swingman is going to contribute off the bench and provide a spark for this UConn Huskies team on the perimeter and inside.

Stanley Robinson has battled between power forward and his regular small forward early on this season. Due to both injury and academic issues he has been put in a tough position that benefits the team more then him as an individual.

Both guards Jamal Trice and Darius Smith are expected to battle for playing time behind starting point guard Kemba Walker.

What is exciting most about this UConn team is the potential they hold. Alex Oriahki is one of the most highly recruited players in recent players.

Many analysts and people compare him to Emeka Okafor. A high standard to live up to, nonetheless someone that if he was to play at that level would leave tremendous footsteps in the Connecticut basketball program.

Jim Calhoun came back for another season, because he knew the real potential this team holds. With the recruits coming in and season veterans from years past, this combination calls for great success.

No matter what happens this team is ready to succeed in the 2010 season. With the players and personal in place, UConn basketball is expected to be atop the Big East once again.

Much will depend on the chemistry of this year's team, but with the pieces in place, there is a high likely this team succeeds later on this team.

The Preseason NIT in MSG and a date with Kentucky will be tough early on. But, in the end it will make the tougher when they are playing the likes of Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse.

The 2009-2010 Huskies are ready to make a return to the Final Four, if they can remain healthy and come together and gel as a team.

Just look at how last year's team perform down the stretch.

If that's any reason to believe, then this year's team has a significant chance of being that good come April of next year.

Jerome Dyson Is Ready to Lead UConn by Example

Jerome Dyson is back for his senior season at the University of Connecticut, and what a way it started.

On Sunday, after breaking off the nail of his big toe walking into Gampel Pavilion, Dyson had it stitched back up and went out and played.

He not only played, but led the Huskies in a rout over UMass-Lowell by scoring 32 points.

Dyson's shooting is what the Huskies missed most in the National Semifinal last year against Michigan State. When A.J. Price, Kemba Walker, and Stanley Robinson were unable to shoot consistently from the perimeter, it hurt the Huskies.

There were a few times that someone needed to step up and hit a big shot, but it never happened, and as a result the Huskies lost to the Spartans. Jim Calhoun has said before that the Huskies had an excellent shot of winning it all if Dyson was healthy.

After tearing a ligament in his knee at home against Syracuse on Feb. 13, Dyson was lost for the season. The Huskies had to find a way to fill the void left by one of its top scorers.

Dyson is the type of player that can go off at any time. On Sunday he was 5-for-5 behind the three-point line. His dynamic ability on offense and tenacious defense are what make him such a significant leader.

There are plenty of critics out there who question UConn's talent after losing Jeff Adrien, Price, and Hasheem Thabeet to the NBA. Their frontcourt is young right now but should be much stronger once highly touted freshman Ater Majok is eligible come Dec. 23.

This Huskies team will be tested early on in the Preseason NIT and then again when they play Kentucky at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 9.

Don't be fooled by how this team handles tough competition early on in the season. Calhoun will have his guys ready come Big East play and as March approaches.

Dyson will be the player to watch throughout this season. He has never played a full season at Connecticut due to various injuries and incidents. But this is the year that he leads by example.

With a lot of young talent and a solid core back, Jerome Dyson's success is imperative to helping develop this young team if they plan on making a deep NCAA tournament run come March 2010.

The Big East Could End Charlie Weis' Tenure at Notre Dame

There is no question that with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame standing at 6-3 with three games left in the season, Charlie Weis is feeling the hot-seat.

After three close losses to Michigan, USC, and Navy, the BCS aspirations of this team are dead and gone. With two Big East opponents on its schedule, Weis could be gone if the Fighting Irish are sitting at 6-5.

It all starts Saturday night in Pittsburgh. The Panthers are currently ranked No. 8 in the nation and contending for a Big East championship.

Playing on the road this weekend, Notre Dame is going to be tested. After losing at home to Navy, there is going to be a lot of people watching how Notre Dame responds on national television Saturday night.

Jimmy Clausen has had a great season, but his inefficiency in the red zone at times has been proven costly. Too many turnovers on offense at key points in games have plagued the Fighting Irish in all three losses.

People are screaming for Weis to be fired in South Bend. Though alumni have claimed this is out of question, it makes you wonder is Weis' welcome is long worn out. He has had a hard time winning football games while trying to produce talent.

The Big East, a conference that has gained little respect on a national level, could be what puts Weis out as head coach at Notre Dame.

Dion Lewis has filled the shoes of Philadephia Eagle LeSean McCoy in more ways then anyone could imagine. His consistency and speed helped improve the balance on the offense.

Pittsburgh stands at 8-1, and Dave Wandstedt knows the tradition of Notre Dame and would love nothing more than to get a win in front of the home crowd.

After Pittsburgh, Notre Dame will play the Connecticut Huskies at home. UConn is a team that should not be taken lightly. They have lost five games this season by a combined 15 points.

A season full of heartbreaks in defeat and the tragic death of a teammate has put an emotional strain on the entire team. Nevertheless, they have fought hard every game and just haven't been able to close the deal in the fourth quarter.

Notre Dame is part of the Big East Conference in just about every other collegiate sport. How ironic would it be to see two of its biggest rivals in the Big East, Pittsburgh and Connecticut, seal the deal on Charlie Weis at Notre Dame?

With that being said, the Big East comes to play every game. Pittsburgh is having a great year and continues to hope for a BCS Bowl game.

UConn has had its share of tough losses, but that's not going to stop them with three games left in the season. Going into South Bend, the Huskies will be ready to play.

After all, it will be the Notre Dame transfer Zach Frazer leading the Connecticut offense out on the field. Going back to the place he never got to play for after committing to Notre Dame out of high school.

It could be two teams from the Big East that finish Charlie Weis in South Bend. Anything is possible, and it's clear Notre Dame fans are tired of the underachieving team that Weis puts together year in and year out.

At the end of the day, it's all about winning football games. After losing to Navy twice in three years, there's a lot of questions swirling around Charlie Weis and his time left as head coach of Notre Dame football.

UCONN Football: Trying To Reach The Next Level

This Connecticut football team is unlike any other in the history of its program. The grit and determination this team has showed week in and week out is a true testament to Randy Edsall and his entire coaching staff.

After yet another heartbreaking defeat to No. 5 Cincinnati last night by a final of 47-45, the Huskies wake up this morning with a record of 4-5, and slim chances of going bowling.

Arguably the Huskies could be 9-0, but in football it is all about finishing the game. A football team is as good as its record, but there is not a better 4-5 team in the country then the UConn Huskies.

That is nice praise and everything, but at the end of the day it is all about competing for the big east title, and going to a BCS championship. That is why Edsall came to UConn and has built Connecticut football into what it is today.

This season has been extremely tough on the UConn community. All five losses have been by a combined 15 points. Leading in the fourth quarter of four of the games, and then last night the Huskies never gave up with a two point conversion away from tying the game with five minutes left after being down 20 on two occasions.

More importantly, the Huskies have to deal with the loss of own of their teammates. The impact and playing ability of Jasper Howard is even more evidently missed now then ever before.

The Huskies have had to deal with the grief and emotional pain of that situation and at the same time have taken the field with nothing but strength and intensity to win. They have been right there time and time again, but when the clock his zero, the Huskies have ended up on the wrong side in the losers column.

They have dealt with numerous injuries time and time again. Whether it was Frazer going down first, then Endres last week. This team has remained constant and upbeat about the offense.

On Defense the linebacker depth has been hit hard at various times in the season. Also UConn's secondary has had to play a combination of freshman. This team has always been ready to play no matter the circumstances.

The Connecticut Huskies are that close to being a national program. Relatively there division one experience is still very young and it takes time to arrive on that stage. With that being said, the Connecticut Huskies head into a bye week with some much needed rest.

You better believe they will hit the practice field hard next week before they head to South Bend, Indiana to take on Notre Dame. Another chance for the Huskies to show what UConn football is all about on national television.

Yes, there have been many disappointments this season but in the end a lot of good will come out of every loss this football team has endured this season.

No matter how this season concludes, Randy Edsall is proud of the way his kids have played. Each and every fan should praise how the Connecticut football team has handled everything that has been thrown its way this season.

When the Connecticut Huskies reach that next level, the feeling will be that much more rewarding.

Connecticut Travels To West Virginia With Heavy Hearts

The Connecticut Huskies are getting ready to take on West Virginia in Morgantown, after the toughest week of many of these players and coaches careers. The death of CB Jasper Howard will shadow over this team for years to come.

Today, the Huskies are focused on football. Connecticut has never beaten West Virginia and has had a tough time on the road in Morgantown. It is not an easy place to play and under these circumstances makes it that much more difficult.

Jazz always wanted to beat West Virginia, and that was all he was concerned with after the game of his career last week at home against Louisville. Then not even twelve hours later he was tragically gone, and this team had lost a brother.

UConn comes into the game 4-2, and 1-1 in the Big East. They are going into the toughest part of their schedule, and are looking to stay in the top tier of the Big East. Cody Endres has had a lot of success since taking over the starting job at quarterback.

His success will be instrumental if Connecticut wins this game. Running back Andre Dixon will look to continue his hard running on the ground and find those open holes that his offensive line has been opening.

Both receivers Kashif Moore and Michael Smith who tried to save Howard are ready to go and look to make an impact through the air.

The defense will be a key part if the Huskies get the win for Jazz. Lindsey Witten and Kendall Reyes are going to need to pressure Jarrett Brown on the defensive line. West Virginia also has a Heisman candidate in Noel Devine who runs the football with the best of them.

Blidi Wreh-Wilson, a freshman, will be the cornerback who takes the spot left vacant by Jasper Howard. He will look to continue his success on the field and make his presence felt in the secondary.

Reggie McClain will return punts and remain at safety. His play on the field will need to remain stellar because West Virginia is going to attack downfield. Jerome Junior will start opposite McClain and defending the passing game will be these two's toughest task.

With Scott Lutrus out again due to a reoccurring stinger injury, the linebacking core is going to have to step their game up. Edsall said it best in the words of Jazz in his pregame conference,"We are going to play every play like it is our last play we are ever going to play."

The Huskies will be playing with heavy hearts against the Mountaineers. In tribute to everything that Jasper Howard was: LIVE 365.

Connecticut rises to the challenge in a tough contest, UConn 28 West Virginia 24.

Randy Edsall Stands Tall In the Face of Adversity

Randy Edsall, who is in his 11th season as head football coach at the University of Connecticut, has dealt with the tragic death of Jasper Howard as best he could. The amount of courage he has had over the last week is why being a head coach has to do with so much more then just the game of football.

Edsall, who lost his father back in February, now has had to deal with the death of a player, Jazz, who he was close with. There has been widespread media attention on this event, and Edsall has remained calm, cool, and collective throughout.

Win or lose today down in West Virginia, Randy Edsall has shown time and time again why he remains committed to the football program at UConn. The death of Jasper Howard touched a wide diversity of people across the Connecticut community.

One of the most touching experiences I can recall was on Wednesday night when Kijuan Dabney called up Coach Edsall to deliver him a letter jacket personally made for him. It was signed by every player, coach, and various faculty at UConn.

On the back was a picture of Coach Edsall and Jazz together. This emotional moment brought tears to the eyes of many in the crowd and everybody on stage. This connection showed the bond that Edsall has created with all of his players.

Randy Edsall is much more then a football coach. He is a mentor, teacher, friend, and most importantly a father figure. These kids come to Connecticut mainly in part because they know what Coach Edsall brings to the table.

He put it best when he said, "One of my sons have been taken away from me," which is exactly how he feels in wake of Jazz's death. Jasper Howard was arguably the best cover corner on this UConn team, and nothing can replace his spirit and playing ability on the field.

The entire UConn football team has had to mourn and grieve the death of Jazz this past week. When the Huskies take the field in Morgantown they will be playing with heavy hearts. Jazz always wanted to beat West Virginia and his team wants to win this game for him.

Coach Edsall has been there for his players every time they need him. He has dealt with these events the best he possibly could, and has remained strong. His ability to remain strong and still prepare for West Virginia is a testament to who Randy Edsall is not only as a coach, but as a person.

Now it is time for him to lead his team on the sideline. To do what he does best, and go out there and win football games. The death of Jasper Howard has put a new prospective on life for me. Every day is a blessing and you have to live each day to the fullest. No matter what happens keep your head high and move forward.

Randy Edsall can be viewed as an inspiration for many. His actions and words over the past week is the exact reason why he is such a great man. When you push football to the side, Coach Edsall has done it all with much adversity during these tough times.

Connecticut Football Team Mourns Fallen Brother

Last night, the Connecticut football team came together for a very touching candlelight vigil in honor of their late teammate Jasper Howard. Howard was a special person who lived every day to the fullest.

Jazz was a devoted friend, teammate, brother, and overall great type of person. He came to Storrs to get an education and hoped to play professional football one day. He had a promising future ahead, and to see his life end abruptly before his 21st birthday is heartbreaking.

He escaped the streets of Miami and had talked about how his mother worked tirelessly to support his family. He also mentioned his strong bond with his two sisters, one who is 13 and went through a serious battle with Meningitis.

The impact of Jazz's death on this campus is simply unimaginable. Today, all students are wearing black and dark clothes in remembrance of Jasper's life. It is a tribute to everything he stood for and a celebration of his life.

Last night's vigil was a time for the football team to come together as one with his parents and family. It gave a special time to grief the loss of Jazz. Anytime someone dies it's tough to deal with, but, under these circumstances, no words can correctly describe the emotions and thoughts running through this football team.

Jasper Howard was full of life. He always had something to say. He was the type of player that gave 110 percent on every down he was on the field. His forced fumble and a recovery on Saturday changed the whole momentum to UConn's side.

He was a difference-maker in everything he did. The sky was the limit on his playing potential and it is a shame that we will never see what Jasper Howard could have been in the National Football League.

His spirit will live on in this UConn football program for years to come. There will be a candlelight vigil for the entire UConn community tomorrow night. It will be a tribute to Jazz.

This Saturday, UConn plans to honor Jazz by bringing his jersey and helmet to every game the rest of the season. They will also have JH stickers on their helmets in his honor. Jasper Howard will certainly be looking down on his teammates and coaches.

West Virginia will also honor Jazz with a moment of silence, and they will wear number six stickers on the backs of their helmets. Then there will be an honorary handshake before the game begins.

It is certainly a tough time for all. Nobody deserves to have their life end this way. His life will weigh heavy on the hearts of this UConn community; his spirit will still be with this team as they move on and compete the rest of this season.

The Top Five Games of Jasper Howard's Career

Jasper Howard made his presence felt every time he took the field for the Connecticut Huskies. Whether it was on the defensive side of the ball defending the pass or stopping the run, or returning punts he was a rising star. This will recap some of his best performances during his career as a Husky. Although Jasper is gone, his hard work and determination should never be forgotten.
Begin Slideshow

Tragedy Strikes UConn Community After the Death of Jasper Howard

Jasper Howard, a junior and starting cornerback at the University of Connecticut was killed during the early hours of Sunday morning on campus after being involved in an altercation in which he was stabbed.

He was flown by lifestar to St. Francis Hospital, and was pronounced dead immediately after being transported by ambulance to Windham Hospital.

The suspects remain at large after a fight broke out outside the Student Union, which is located near the center of campus. Another victim was stabbed in the altercation, and there is currently a criminal investigation going on where the crime occurred.

Only hours earlier, Howard strongly contributed in a Huskies 38-25 victory at home over the University of Louisville. He had 11 tackles, a forced fumble, and fumble recovery in the victory that helped UConn get to 4-2 on the season, 1-1 in the big east.

Jasper Howard has been one of the bright spots of this UConn defense this season. After starting every game last year opposite of Darius Butler, Howard had established himself this season as a strong cornerback and dynamic punt returner in which he led the Big East in last season.

Howard, who is from Miami, had aspirations to play in the national football league. With his 4.4 forty yard dash speed, and play-making ability on defense, Howard would have likely been drafted in 2011 NFL Draft.

The University of Connecticut is a state of shock following this devastating incident. Jasper Howard will certainly be missed by his fans, friends, teammates, and family.

Rest in peace Jasper Howard, you will remain in the hearts and on the minds of all those who ever knew you.

Upset Alert: UConn Should Beware Of Louisville

Conventional wisdom would make you think that UConn should easily get by Louisville this Saturday. But then again, the way UConn has played in the fourth quarter this season makes you wonder what will happen if this game is tight down the stretch.

It has come out this week that Cody Endres is the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart. He has successfully won the job that Zach Frazer won in the preseason. When asked about Endres' performance in his absence, Frazer responded with a "no comment".

Endres has played well, and last week was 17-of-23 for 189 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. He did have a costly fumble on third down that took away at least three points.

Endres has performed better, but he is not a lock to remain the starter the remainder of the season. If he doesn't play well and win some football games, I don't think head coach Randy Edsall would hesitate to put Frazer behind center.

UConn will most likely be playing without its big leader at linebacker in Scott Lutrus after he reinjured his stinger injury at Pittsburgh. He changes the dimension of this defense in so many ways. With his game status in doubt, the Huskies will have to step up the pressure up front and put more trust in the secondary.

This is a weaker Louisville team than it has been in years past, but UConn shouldn't take the Cardinals lightly. With Steve Kragthorpe struggling to ignite a fire under his team's belt, this could be a trap game for the Huskies.

The UConn defense can't continue to miss tackles and blow coverage in the secondary. This is conference play and every game has that much importance. This is a game the Huskies should win quite easily, especially since it's the homecoming game.

The Rent will be sold out and 40,000 strong will be there cheering on the Huskies. But the slip up against Pittsburgh has to be forgotten as UConn prepares to take the field Saturday at Noon.

Louisville will come in ready to play. They remember the Larry Taylor infamous "fair catch," that led to a game-changing touchdown in October of 2007. Don't think Louisville is going to come in here as a cupcake and just fall down.

The Huskies better be prepared for a fight, because that's what every game in the Big East is all about.

It Is Cody's Time To Shine

Cody Endres will enter this Saturday's game at Heinz Field making his third consecutive start for the UConn Huskies. After faltering the second half against North Carolina, Endres has gotten the job done as quarterback of the UConn Huskies.

Endres, who will be going back in his home state of Pennsylvania, has really taken his opportunity to lead the Huskies and ran with it. With Frazier still out due to injury as long as Endres remains healthy and keeps winning football games, this could be his job for the remainder of the season.

We already know the Huskies have a solid defense, and with a new offense in place there is a lot of potential for this passing game to rise to the occasion. The Huskies certainly were getting the ball up and down the field vertically against the Rams of Rhode Island.

Michael Smith was the first UConn receiver to catch eight passes in a game since Keron Henry did it in the Motor City Bowl all the back in 2004. He and his counterparts Dwayne Dwifton and Michael Lang have tremendous speed on the outside and in the slot.

There is no question Senior Brad Kunuch has become a solid and dependable wide receiver for the Huskies. He may not make the big play down the field, but his hand skills are unquestioned.

The list of weapons that Endres has goes on and on. It is pretty nice when you have two extremely talented backs behind you. Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon are two of the best backs in the Big East.

So much for all the critics that said UConn was going to have a tough time replacing Donald Brown who went to the Colts in the first round of the NFL Draft. The offensive line of UConn has experience and leadership. The blocking they provide up front is what fuels the success in the rushing attack.

Dating back to last year when Endres led the Huskies against eventually BCS Bowl bound Cincinnati he has been a reliable quarterback. He's big and tough and when he doesn't turnover the football the Huskies are always in it at the end of the game.

Much of the success this weekend in front of a nationally televised audience will be put squarely on the shoulders of Cody Endres. Personally, I think Cody enjoys that feeling and knows what he has to do to get the job done.

He is not afraid to throw the ball up when given the opportunity. He put it up 42 times last year in a win over Cincinnati and 37 times in a lost to West Virginia. If the Huskies go out there and establish the run, watch out for the play action pass.

This will be his first hostile crowd against a Big East opponent. Both games last year were at home and this is a totally different environment. Endres has gained some confidence in his play over the last few weeks. It is going to be essential that he uses it early on and establishes himself against Pittsburgh.

There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding both of these teams. The Big East as a whole is considered to be a pretty open race as far as the BCS Bid is concerned. His team is going to get a chance to beat each other up.

Saturday it all starts with Connecticut going into Pittsburgh, led by redshirt Sophomore Cody Endres. Cody is young and talented, and Coach Edsall knows he has the potential to lead this team to big victories.

Cody, it's your time to go out there and get the job done. Prove to the nation what UConn Huskies football is all about.

The Jets Trade For Braylon Edwards: A Risky Move To Say The Least

The Jets trading for Edwards is a big mistake to say the least. Braylon Edwards carries a lot of baggage with him and with the Jets off to a surprising 3-1 start why on Earth would you go after this guy?

Yes, Edwards is a former pro-bowler in his own right, but in recent years his playing ability has diminished significantly. He has been known to drop passes that should be caught and overall there are a lot of question marks surrounding him.

Mark Sanchez now will have to connect with Edwards and form some type of chemistry with him. Sanchez has performed well in the Jets offense and throwing Edwards opposite Jerricho Cotchery looks good on paper, I don't think it will play out on the field.

Chansi Stuckey was a 7th round draft pick out of Clemson who earned the No. 2 wide receiver spot in training camp. Now he, special teams and back up linebacker Jason Trusnick, and two undisclosed draft picks are headed off to Cleveland.

This is the second big deal in nearly six months between Mangini and his former team. The first was in the draft that led to the acquisition of quarterback Mark Sanchez. Maybe, this trade will work out like the first, but with all of the off-field incidents Edwards has been involved in there is a lot of risks.

Edwards caught 10 balls in the first four games. He is coming off a game where he didn't have a reception. This isn't the Braylon Edwards that caught 16 touchdowns only a couple years ago.

Braylon has been fined for speeding, was out partying with Donte Stallworth the same night he struck and killed a pedestrian in the cross-walk. Now there is reports that he punched a friend of Lebron James outside a nightclub in Cleveland.

It is clear that his time in Cleveland was up, but coming to the New York Jets is a high risk high reward situation. Braylon could play out to be a big part of the Jets offense moving forward but he is now under league investigation for his latest incident and there is a lot of uncertainty surround him.

Rex Ryan has transformed the Jet's defense upside down. They are attacking the quarterback and forcing turnovers unlike any Jets team before. This Jets defense is a unit that leads by performance on the field in its own right.

The running attack is strong led by Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. These two provide a duel attack that bring both power and speed to the table. Putting Braylon Edwards on the field who is a playmaker in his own right, could change the dimension of this offense.

Braylon Edwards is going to come in and be that deep threat in the Jets offense. It is a fresh start for him, but it is New York and they are expecting big things from him. Lets see if he can go out there and live up to the hype.

As Timmy Tebow Goes, So Goes the Florida Gators

This season is supposed to be the year that the Florida Gators run the table and win the national championship by overpowering opponents with their sure skill and raw talent. With Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes coming back, it looked like a done deal.

The only problem now is that after a vicious hit that left Tim Tebow on the ground unconscious a week and half ago, his playing status is up in the air. Tebow was at practice today throwing and wearing a red jersey, but it is in the hands of the doctors whether or not he goes in against Baton Rouge on Saturday night.

Tebow has done it all at Florida. He has won two national titles and a Heisman trophy. The guy is arguably the best college football player ever, and he always leaves everything out on the field. His inspiration and passion for the game of football is unmatched. The will and determination of Tebow has made him so successful on the field—and in life.

Tim Tebow is the leader of this team, and it is a whole new game if he doesn't go.

Don't get me wrong, Urban Meyer has a remarkable football team. They have dominated their competition week in and week out. But even if Tebow goes, there is no telling how his body or mind will react once he gets back out on the field.

He will be only two weeks removed from a serious concussion, and with the intensity Tebow brings on every play, there are a lot of questions as to whether or not he will be able to play up to his high level.

If Tebow doesn't go, the Gators are going to have to play strong defense against the Tigers. It will fall on the shoulders of Spikes and his counterpart to win the battle in the trenches. Points will be that much harder to come by on both sides of the ball.

Jordan Brantley has never started a collegiate game, and who knows how he would play and react if called upon Saturday night. He can prepare all he wants, but there is no feeling like matching up with an SEC rival with major BCS implications on the line.

Expect to see a heavy dose of Jeff Demps out of the Gators backfield no matter who starts at quarterback. He has the speed and athleticism to get up and down the field in a hurry.

Demps could be looked at as the Gators' top weapon on the offensive side of the ball. He has picked up much of the offensive production that was left behind when Percy Harvin was drafted by the Vikings in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Tebow is a warrior, and this is the one game that he had to be ready for. LSU is always a tough game, but they are coming in with momentum after a big win against Georgia. No. 4 vs. No. 1—there's nothing more you could ask for.

Division rivals going toe to toe is what it's all about. Tim Tebow is always hyped up and exciting to watch under a spotlight like this. But if he can't go, the game must go on, and a winner will emerge from this game, which is sure to be a battle.

UCONN Can Do Attitude Needed This Weekend at Pittsburgh

The heart and soul of the UConn defense, Scott Lutrus, was back at practice today and has been upgraded to probable for Saturday's tilt against Pittsburgh. This would be a huge emotional lift for the Huskies who've been without one of their leading playmakers since he went down with a nerve injury in week one at Ohio.

The Huskies can do attitude will remain led by sophomore quarterback Cody Endres. Edsall announced him as the starter on Sunday, and Endres looks to continue the success he has had on the field this year.

As far as quarterback Zach Frazer is concerned, he has made strides on his undisclosed knee injury, but has not been cleared to practice yet. Edsall's logic is he doesn't even know if Frazer will be the the back-up come Saturday.

As long as Frazer is out and is not medically cleared to play, there is no quarterback controversy. When looking at the numbers between the two quarterbacks, many people believe Endres has won the job on the field.

This Saturday there will be a heavy workload for running backs Andre Dixon and Jordan Todman. These two are in the top thirty when it comes to rushing yards per game with Dixon averaging just over 90 yards and Todman averaging 99 yards.

No other team has two backs in the top fifty. That goes to show the hard work and effort the UConn running backs have put in and the production out of one of the best offensive lines in the Big East.

The return of Lutrus this Saturday at Heinz field would be huge for an already proven defense. The big three in the middle, Wilson, Lloyd, and Lutrus, will be back looking to wreak havoc on a Pittsburgh offense that did some damage to a weaker Louisville Cardinal team last Friday night.

The Huskies believe they have what it takes to win Saturday's game and that is very important. The game will be aired on ABC at 3:30 and will be another opportunity for people all along the east coast to see what Connecticut has as far as its football team is concerned.

The time is now for UConn to continue the momentum it has generated after a devastating loss at home to North Carolina. This is the Huskies first conference game and there would be nothing better than going into the Panthers house and pulling out a win.

That can do attitude will play a tremendous role in whether or not the Huskies can perform against a solid big east opponent on the road. A win and UConn will be building the confidence it needs to continue the success it has had so far this season.

If Connecticut's Middle Linemen Get Healthy, Team's Big East Hunt Just Beginning

The UConn Huskies have made it through the first four games of their schedule in a solid position. With a record of three wins and one loss, this team is poised to compete for a Big East title if they can get healthy.

One area that has been hit particularly hard is the middle linebacker position. The heart of the defense and ultimately the field general on defense has gone down not once, but twice, for this young and talented Husky squad.

It all starts with the Captain Scott Lutrus. He is an absolute animal on defense and is always found wherever the ball is moving on the field. Lutrus, who is from Brookfield, Connecticut, occurred a neck stinger in the opener at Ohio.

He has not played since and there is cause for concern whenever you are dealing with a nerve injury. Lutrus of course wants to be out there for every down in every game, but the doctors have not cleared him medically just yet.

Lutrus has been one of the Huskies top tacklers over his first team two seasons. He is a leader both on and off the field, and sitting on the sidelines dealing with this injury has been tough. It is unclear whether he will be able to go next week in Pittsburgh, but knowing him and the hype around this game, I expect him to be ready to go.

Then key UConn reserve Kijuan Dabney had stepped in nicely to fill Lutrus place as the strong-side linebacker. Dabney, who converted this offseason from safety, was making plays and helping the Huskies defense.

Unfortunately, Dabney re-aggravated a shoulder injury in pregame during Rhode Island. This is just another injury that the Huskies are going to have to deal with and have someone step up.

It is too bad that Dabney's season is over and this injury will require shoulder surgery. Dabney, a junior from Texas, was really coming into his own role on the team. He is a team player and who always does what was in the best interest of the team.

His presence on the field will be missed. Hopefully the Huskies can get Lutrus back in time for next weeks showdown with Pittsburgh. UConn is looking to revenge a 34-10 loss at home from last year.

UConn will need to be strong on defense if they plan on starting conference play with a win. If Lutrus is cleared and ready to go next weekend, it will be a big lift for the Huskies as a whole.

Injuries are certainly part of the game, but it is also an opportunity for someone else to step up. Linebackers often times can make or break the performance of a teams defense. Look for Scott Lutrus to come back hungrier than ever on the football field.

Connecticut's Chance to Deliver A Message

The Connecticut Huskies will head to Pittsburgh next Saturday for a Big East opener that will give fans an indication to who is the front-runner in this wide open conference. The Huskies have showed glimpses in its first four games, but this is conference play and the team that executes will win.

The setting of Heinz Field is sure to be a frenzy as Pittsburgh is off to a 3-1 start and goes on the road to play Louisville Saturday night. This Pittsburgh team is experienced and is always a dangerous team at home.

Going back to the Huskies, they have been dealing with injuries early on this season starting with the quarterback Zach Frazer and defensive leader at linebacker Scott Lutrus. With UConn off this week, hopefully it gives both these players enough time to get healthy.

Then again, Cody Endres has made the most of his opportunity since Frazer went down against North Carolina. Endres is 3-1 in his career as a starter and Frazer is 1-3. There is a big decision that has to be made, but Coach Edsall has refused to say much before Frazer is cleared by the medical staff.

UConn needs to have the quarterback that protects the ball and moves the chains. Right now that looks to be Endres, but many people will argue no quarterback should lose his job to injury.

The Huskies have looked tough on defense all season long. The secondary, led by Jerome Junior and Robert McClain, has played well. UConn is going to need to continue to pressure the quarterback if they are to be successful in getting turnovers.

More then anything Connecticut needs to go into Pittsburgh's house and get a win to prove to the college football world that they are capable of playing with the big dogs. It is all about winning big games when it counts.

Coach Edsall has always said his team takes one game at a time. With the success of Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon in the backfield, UConn has the running game to be a dominant force in the Big East.

Michael Smith had eight catches against URI, and along with a rotation of young and talented wideouts they have the pieces in place to be able to move the ball through the air when called upon.

The Huskies have plenty of time to prepare for a Pittsburgh team that is going to be ready to play at home. Coach Edsall has time to hopefully get his players healthy, but it is also about putting together a game plan that can be executed and result in a win for the Huskies.

UConn did make some errant mistakes against URI that bring cause for concern. A few fumbles and one play that was blown coverage resulted in a touchdown and a couple of short fields for the Rams. These are mistakes that the Huskies can't commit if they plan on beating Pittsburgh.

The Huskies had North Carolina on the ropes at home. They went into Baylor and played impressively moving the ball down the field and creating turnovers. UConn needs to build off the last couple weeks and come out and play tough, hard-nosed football in Pittsburgh.

It is another opportunity for this program to beat a strong Pittsburgh team on the road. UConn has had a lot of similar games against opponents of this Pitt team caliber and have failed to walk away with a win.

Pittsburgh most likely would have been ranked if they didn't let a lead slip late against N.C. State. They are a well coached football team that has aspirations of winning the Big East.

There is a possibility that this game is going to be aired on ABC at 3:30. If it is it will be just another chance for a national audience to see that Connecticut has more than just nationally recognized basketball programs.

Coach Edsall has done a great job at UConn, and his team is on the cusp on breaking that barrier. Sending a statement in a game of this importance could build confidence that the Huskies could use throughout the season.

Expect to see a strong message delivered come October 10. It is time for the Huskies to breakthrough that wall and make a jump that catches peoples' attention.

Gametime: UConn Preparing to Host URI

The Huskies will return home this Saturday to face off against the Rams of Rhode Island. This is a game that UConn is heavily favored going into and should win. Although the Rams should not be taken lightly, after all the CAA has hung tough with some BCS conference teams this year.

Heading into this game UConn will continue to do what is working. That is the running game led by Jordan Todman and Andre Dixon. They have already both gone over the 100 yard mark twice in the same games. An accomplishment never done until this season.

Facing less stiff competition look to possibly see UConn try and open it up through the air attack. It is a perfect opportunity to se if quarterback Cody Endres can connect with some of his young and talented wideouts downfield.

Endres is looking to go out and to play to his potential. With Zach Frazer still out overcoming a knee injury, Endres is leading this team and trying to prove to the coaching staff that he deserves to be the starter.

What has been one of the leading success stories of this team early on in the season is its defense. The defensive unit is key to the UConn gameplan and its ability to cause turnovers make it that much easier for the offense to score points.

Robert McClain and Jasper Howard have played well in the secondary. Up front Witten, Williams, and Reyes have stuffed the run and pressured the quarterback. For the most part the Huskies have missed their leader at linebacker in Scott Lutrus.

Lutrus sustained a neck stinger, and still is having lingering nerve issues that has prevented him from playing. He is questionable this week, and with a weak opponent don't rush to see him back on the field until Pittsburgh on October 10.

Right now the keys for the Huskies is to go out and execute. Most of the team is trying to either get healthy or remain keeping up the hard work and intensity.

One group to watch on Saturday is the offensive line. UConn's bigs on the line led by Mike Hicks and Moe Petrus do an outstanding job at opening up holes for the running backs. These guys never get enough credit, but the work they do on the field is why UConn can run the ball and be effective game in and game out.

These should be a nice warm-up game for the Huskies. Following a bye week next weekend the Huskie have a date at Pittsburgh on the 10th of October which should be an early match to show who is ready for Big East action.

This weekend should be a good confidence booster Huskies in a route 41-3.

Panthers at Cowboys: A Monday Night Football Must-Win for Both Teams

The most intriguing matchup of Week Three in the NFL could easily be the game that will wrap the week up.

The Panthers will be on the road playing in the Palace that Jerry Jones built down in Big D. It brings up a great question: Early in this season, who needs the win more, the Panthers or Cowboys?

First, let's analyze the state of the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Romo is coming off an absolutely horrible game that the Cowboys still had a chance to win at the end. He wanted to deliver a win against the Giants in the Stadium debut, but that's over and done with. He better win on Monday night or else there could be some serious changes in Big D.

Tony Romo is Jerry Jones quarterback, like it or not. As far as Wade Philips is concerned that scene is yet to be played out. A loss at home on Monday night could put Philips strictly on the hot seat. Remember, there is a hot offensive coordinator making $3 million dollars a year in Jason Garrett on board in Big D.

Don't think Jerry Jones would think twice about pulling the trigger on firing Wade and promoting Jason Garrett to head coach. He has made crazier decisions, and this would be no different.

Now sizing up the team Dallas is facing is the Carolina Panthers. Off to a 0-2 start, the last thing they want to do is end up 0-3 in the NFC South. That would spell disaster for John Fox and his Carolina Panthers.

This team's defense has disappeared over the offseason. Julius Peppers is not the same player, and he has been consistently double-teammed off the line of scrimmage.

The linebacker core led by Jon Beason has struggled mightily in stopping the pass. Donovan McNabb and Matt Ryan both lit it up in the air the last two weeks. These problems need to be addressed this week, or Romo will make them pay.

Jake Delhomme is going to need to find his receivers open against a weak Dallas secondary in order to win this game. Steve Smith and Mushin Muhammad better have big games if they expect to leave Big D with a win.

DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart have to get back the one-two punch of last year in order for this team to start winning games. A tough start to the year, but Carolina has looked inefficient on offense and slow on defense through two games.

Speaking of running backs, Marion Barber is dealing with an uncertain quad injury. His chances of playing are up in the air right now, but expect to see a lot of Felix Jones and Tashard Choice anyway.

Dallas can run the ball, and if they are successful in the passing game, Garrett needs to establish the run first. Then, Romo can work Roy Williams on the outside and his safety blanket tight end Jason Witten over the middle.

This game should be titled must-win Monday, because both teams need it just as bad. The NFC South and NFC East are full of talent and solid teams that have six playoff caliber teams. The only problem is only not all of those teams will be playing come Wildcard Weekend.

It is only Week Three, but watch out for Jerry Jones to make some moves if his team losses Monday night. On the other hand, the Panthers could be in for a long season if they don't show up in Dallas.

Dallas should and needs to win this game if they are planning on being at the top of the NFC. Romo and company need to get their acts together and start playing as a team.

Michael Crabtree: Time to Sign on the Dotted Line

No NFL rookie in history has held out as long as Michael Crabtree has. The outstanding wide receiver out of Texas Tech was the 10th pick in this year's NFL draft and his contract should reflect what a player taken at that pick is worth.

Nothing positive can come of Crabtree holding out for top-five money. All it does is attract negative attention towards him and the Niners' organization.

This is setting a bad example for young athletes and those who have the talent to follow in Crabtree's footsteps. This type of holdout is bad for all parties involved.

Crabtree hasn't been on a football field in over eight months and sitting out an entire year will only hurt his playing ability.

The Niners drafted Crabtree thinking that he would be a help to a depleted wide receiver group. This team could have easily gone in a different direction and drafted a different player if they knew how big of a hassle signing this star wideout would be.

The difference in the level of play from college to NFL is enormous in and of itself. When or if Crabtree decides to sign, he will encounter even more problems getting to know the offense that the Niners run.

The 49ers are offering plenty of money. Reportedly somewhere in the range of four years, $20 million with $16 million guaranteed. That is a whopping sum of money and whether or not Crabtree believes it, that is a fair offer on the table.

Who knows if it is about his ego or his belief that he is the best rookie wide receiver and deserves to be paid like it.

Sorry Michael, the 10th pick of the NFL draft will not get a top-five deal. That is just not how it works anywhere.

Even in the last few days there are accusations that have arisen that the Jets tampered with Michael Crabtree. The Niners have filed charges with the league and an investigation is underway.

Whatever the outcome is, Crabtree needs to put his differences aside and just play football.

Putting that pen to paper and signing a very generous contract that the Niners are offering would be the best move for Team Crabtree. As Week Three approaches, it's the sooner the better for all parties involved.

UConn Huskies Deserve Some RESPECT

The University of Connecticut is nationally recognized as a school with two top basketball programs. Meanwhile Coach Edsall and his staff have built quite a football team over the past decade.

After making the longest road trip in school history the Huskies went into Floyd Casey Stadium and beat the Baylor Bears in their home opener. This game shows that the UConn Huskies can play and gives credit to this Big East team.

Nobody has really given UConn any credit since they have been playing football in the Big East conference. Going on the road and defeating a Big XII program that many expect to be much improved then in years past shows the Huskies are not afraid to back down from a challenge.

The Huskies were only a week removed from a devastating loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels but that did not stop them from coming out and performing on offense and defense.

UConn went into this game as big road underdogs. The Huskies came out ready to play and early in the third quarterback had built a commanding 27-7 lead. Andre Dixon and Jordan Todman ran right down the heart of the Baylor defense and continued to rack up the yardage.

The defense swarmed Robert Griffin and got him out of his style. UConn was successful because they forced turnovers and made the Bears pay. If UConn continues to take advantage of those opportunities they will continue to win football games.

The Huskies have gotten little attention from the media. They were picked to finish 6th in the preseason big east poll. If the Huskies continue to run the ball with Dixon and Todman along with its strong defense this team is going to finish in the top half of this conference.

Coach Edsall isn't concerned with the little respect his team is getting because at the end of the day he knows it is all about winning games. This team is coming into its own and if healthy they have the potential to compete for a Big East title.

UConn plays Rhode Island at home this weekend in a game that the Huskies are expected to win quite handily. It will be another chance for Cody Endres to show what he can do throwing the ball through the air.

Down the road UConn has a bye the weekend of October 3rd, and then began Big East play on the road at Pittsburgh on October 10. Then they have a home game against Louisville on October 17.

The way UConn plays early on against Big East competition will indicate if the Huskies are finally going to get some of the respect they deserve. Winning cures everything, and to be the best the Huskies will have to beat the best.

Tony Romo Does Not Deliver in Dallas Stadium Opener

Tony Romo is the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, but last night he didn't come through when the Cowboys needed him the most.

Three interceptions by Romo and a fumble by Felix Jones led to 24 of the Giants' 33 points.

Romo's numbers were bad.

He completed 13 of 29 for 127 yards with two TDs (one rush; one from the goal line to Witten and another on a quarterback draw.

There were many plays where Romo missed his target or threw into double coverage.

The Giants defense returned an interception for a touchdown. Safety Kenny Philips caught one on the sideline as if he was a center fielder catching a fly ball.

Romo missed Witten so bad on one play that it bounced off his hands, hit his foot and surfaced into the steady hands of a Giants defender for an interception.

The Cowboys were successful on the ground with Barber rushing for 124 yards and a TD and Felix Jones running for 96 yards on seven carries and a TD.

It was clear that the best way for Dallas to move the ball was on the ground. Through the air Romo was almost non-existent.

He did not make the big plays when it was needed. Yes, the defense let him down at the end, but if you're the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, you find whatever way possible to win that game for the fans and owner Jerry Jones.

The season is only two games in and there is a lot of football left to play, but Romo is going to have to pick up the slack. He was blitzed heavily and looked uncomfortable in the pocket.

This could have been a big statement made by the Cowboys, but it is another missed opportunity to show they are the team to beat in the NFC East.

Romo has been a solid quarterback for Dallas, but he has yet to prove his ability to win the big game.

Eli Manning did what he had to do to lead his Giants to victory in Dallas. He has won a Super Bowl, and once again last night showed why he was paid well in the offseason.

It is time for Romo to come back and lead this team to victory.

Their schedule is fairly easy with games at home against Carolina on Monday night, followed by Denver, and Kansas City.

Let's see if Romo can deliver by winning games after a tough loss to the favorite in the division—the New York Football-Giants.

Texas Toast: Huskies Leave Waco With a Big Win

The Huskies went down into Baylor and took care of business. UConn dominated the game on the ground and on defense. They forced three turnovers all which led to scoring drives and the combination of Dixon and Todman was too much for the Baylor Bears.

When it was all said and done the Huskies ended up winning 30-22. On the ground Dixon racked up 149 yards and 3 touchdowns on 31 carries. Todman also went over the 100 yard mark with 103 yards on 22 carries. The consistent gains on the ground helped Cody Endres manage the game.

Endres was efficient and made no major mistakes. He was an efficient 12 for 23 and 147 yards. His ability to stand tall in the pocket and the run the offense helped the Huskies capitalize all of the opportunities the Bears gave them.

The biggest key to the game was how the Huskies turned turnovers into points. The Huskies started the second half with a fumble recovery that led to a 10 yard Andre Dixon touchdown run.

Then on the next drive another fumble on the second play gave UConn another short field to work with. The Huskies once again made the Bears pay with another short 1 yard Andre Dixon touchdown run.

UConn built a 27-7 lead and from there did what was necessary to get the win. It wasn't going to be another fourth quarter meltdown for the UConn defense. They pressured Robert Griffin and did what they had to do to secure the victory.

The Huskies had 382 yards of total offense and were 11 for 20 on third down conversions. This was something that coach Edsall had mentioned as an important aspect on keeping the offense on the field.

Looking forward this gives the Huskies and the Big East some of the respect it deserves. UConn went on the road and faced a Baylor team that is on the rise. They got the win and proved that their strong showing against UNC was no fluke.

The Huskies have I-AA Rhode Island this weekend at home and then have a bye the following week. They open Big East play at Pittsburgh on October 10. Moving forward there is a lot of opportunity for the Huskies to improve.

This performance on the road going in as 10.5 point underdogs shows that this football team should not be taken lightly by any of their remaining opponents.

UConn Looks To Get the Best of Baylor in Waco

It's been quite the week for UConn football. After a heartbreaking loss to North Carolina last week, it is back to business this week as the Huskies make their longest trip ever to play at Baylor.

An apparent stomach virus has hit various players including QB Cody Endres and DE Lindsey Witten. However, both have recovered and are supposed to start come Saturday afternoon.

This is a good sign considering Witten is tied in the FBS average 3.5 sacks a game this year. Also, Endres is expected to start his first game since last year where he defeated Cincinnati and lost a tough game to West Virginia.

UConn has put behind them what happened last week at home against North Carolina, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions about the aerial attack of this offense. It is now Cody Endres' time to put those questions to rest and get a big win for this team.

Coach Edsall has put it in the simplest terms, UConn needs to execute. They need to get more first downs and move the chains down the field without committing penalties and turning the football over.

It is going to be just as tough on the Huskies defense as they will have to stop duel threat quarterback Robert Griffin who can sting you with both his arm and his legs. He had a great game at Wake Forest, and he is one player that you won't miss when watching this game.

The defense played excellent for three quarters against North Carolina. One of the captains, Scott Lutrus, is still questionable for this game, and if he is unable to go expect to see a lot of Kajuan Darby who had a strong game against UNC.

This is going to be a hostile environment and is going to test UConn as a team. It was a close game last year and I expect much of the same later this afternoon.

UConn is going to need to control the ball on offense. Mixing up the pass and run is going to be important to keeping the Bears offense off the field. It is going to be a battle that should raise UConn's level of competition.

In a tough, hard-fought battle, the Huskies win, 27-24.

Sanchez: Beat Brady and Earn Some Respect

Mark Sanchez did a great job going down to Houston and beating the Texans. His performance down south showed that he can play in the NFL. It proves that the Rex Ryan era as the Jets' head coach has begun, and he is expecting only the best out of his players.

This week's opponent is none other then the New England Patriots. Yes, the Patriots are coming off a short work week, but that is not going to stop Bill Belichick from having his team ready to go Sunday at the Meadowlands.

Division rivals are always some of the most intense games of the football season. This could be a big statement early in the year made by Sanchez and the Jets. The Patriots looked vulnerable in areas on Monday night, and if Sanchez is able to exploit them he could lead his team to victory.

This Jets defense will be put to a tough test against an outstanding New England offense. Tom Brady came through in the clutch when he was needed in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills.

Tight end Ben Watson caught both touchdown passes that ended up giving them the lead for good. Consistent Wes Welker was all over the field, and he ended up totalling double digit receptions on the night.

Let's not forget about Randy Moss and the game he had. Whenever a big catch was needed, Moss was called upon and answered. His presence on the field alone is going to be something the Jets make sure they take care of.

Ultimately, this game is going to fall in the hands of the young quarterback Mark Sanchez. The young man from USC has answered the call by starting for the New York Jets, and he has taken it in stride.

Sanchez may feel he still has a chip on his shoulder from the critics at Southern California. Even his coach, Pete Carroll, said he was not sure if Mark was ready for the transition to the next level.

The Jets have a new face of the franchise. They traded up in the draft to get this kid because he can play football. One way to get the respect he deserves would be to take down the Patriots at home this coming Sunday.

It is a tough task, but Sanchez has worked hard and diligently throughout the offseason. He has the weapons to win football games and potentially guide this team to the playoffs.

If Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are able to carry the load and provide a consistent running game, this team will be successful. Washington is a threat anywhere on the field. Jones is a power runner who, when he hits an open hole, is gone to the end-zone.

The right arm of Mark Sanchez delivered on almost every key third-down situation against the Texans. His weapons on the outside are Jerricho Cotchery and Chansi Stuckey. Both of these guys have speed and athleticism.

They may not get the deep ball every play, but as long as they move the chains it is perfectly fine. He also has a tight end by the name of Dustin Keller who can catch the ball over the middle and block down.

Beating Tom Brady in Week two of the NFL season would be an achievement that not many quarterbacks can do. It is only Brady's second start since his knee injury, but he threw the ball well against the Bills and accumulated a ton of yards.

The Patriots are going to be ready to play: There is no doubt about it. With Mangini gone to Cleveland, there is still a whole lot in this rivalry.

New coach Rex Ryan has done his share of talking and now it is time for his team to answer the call. How the Jets perform against the AFC East favorite will give a strong indication to where their season is headed.

How Mark Sanchez plays on Sunday will have a lot to do with that. This is not college anymore, and let's hope Mark realizes that. He has an opportunity to earn respect from everyone if he goes out, has a great game, and wins in front of the home crowd.

Yankees and Blue Jays Brawl: Charge!

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning in a game that the Yankees were losing 9-3, a brawl erupted between the Blue Jays and Yankees.

After a couple of Blue Jays batters were hit early in the game, Jesse Carlson threw behind Jorge Posada and chaos erupted.

Is this really what the Yankees need to be getting involved in at this point in the season?

There is sure to be suspensions handed down from this. Posada certainly will be suspended for the initial start of this fight. There may also be suspensions handed down to players in the bullpen.

Rod Barajas charged the mound from the catcher position and did not take any action in trying to stop what went down.

Brawls are a part of baseball, but this was unnecessary on Posada's part. There is going to be fallout from this incident and it could affect the Yankees as they move into the last 20 games of the season.

Luckily it seems that no player was injured, but when grown men get physical anything like a sprain or strain is a possibility.

A team with the talent of the Yankees, a team getting ready for October baseball, didn't need this to happen. It looks bad in the media and can only have a negative impact on a team that is trying to win its first World Series since 2000.

Only time will tell what sort of fallout will come of this brawl.

Connecticut Huskies: Thinking Outside The Box

The latest news that players, one being quarterback Cody Endres, have an apparent illness going around leaves UConn in a precarious position. Going into Baylor's home opener the Huskies may turn to true freshman Mike Box.

Two big college football programs have turned to true freshman this year. USC has started Matt Barkley and won a big game on the road at Ohio State. Michigan has done the same with Tate Forcier and is coming off an impressive win at home against a talented Notre Dame.

Maybe this is exactly what the Huskies need.

With starter Zach Frazier out with an undisclosed knee injury and now backup Cody Endres sick, this could be 19-year-old Mike Box's chance to show what he has to offer. The passing game has been far from productive so far and it needs to pick up if the Huskies want to win more football games.

Then again it is still only Tuesday, and assuming this is just your normal stomach bug there is still a good chance that Cody Endres is healthy by the end of the week. It is something that some of the players had early last week and were able to get through.

The last redshirt freshman to start was Dennis Brown in 2006 who ended up transferring and is playing for Norfolk State in Virginia.

There will have to be a decision made going forward by Coach Edsall concerning who to start against Baylor on Saturday. It is sure to be hot and humid down in Waco, and regardless of who the starter is they are going to need to be ready to come out and compete.

A win Saturday would be a big step in the right direction for UConn no matter who is playing quarterback.

A Cold Reception: Introducing the Connecticut Huskies' 2009 Freshman Class

The UConn Huskies are looking to regroup this year after making it to the final four last season. The loss of A.J. Price, Jeff Adrien, and Hasheem Thabeet will be hard to replace, but this freshman class has the talent to fill many of the holes left by the big three.

Remember, the Huskies still have a core nucleus of players that will sure be there to guide these freshman and shape them into form by the time Big East conference play comes around. Coach Calhoun and George Blaney will use their teaching skills and experience to make the transition to college level easier.

Senior leaders Jerome Dyson, Stanley Robinson, and Gavin Edwards will only make this young group better. Playing against each other early on in practice this season will help gel the team together and make a statement with the departure of former teammates to the NBA.

The overall most talented recruit in this class is All-McDonald American All Star Alex Oriakhi. A 6'9", 240 lbs power forward out of Tilton High School. He has drawn comparisons to Emeka Okafor, who in his own right was one of the best basketball players to ever come out of UConn.

It should be fun to see how Calhoun uses Oriakhi and rotates him into the lineup.

Next, is Oriakhi's high school teammate Jamal Coombs-McDaniel a 6'7", 210 lbs swingman who most likely will play at forward. He is athletic and has both range and size to handle other forwards. Having two recruits out of the same high school in Massachusetts must mean these kids can play.

Then there are two guards, Jamaal Trice and Darius Smith. Both guards from a position standpoint but expect to totally different styles of play.

Trice who is from Los Angeles is a big strong guard listed at 6'5", 220 lbs. He loves to take it to the basket and is willing to give up his body for any lose ball. His style of play is one that Jim Calhoun embraces and that hustle will get him some playing time if he keeps it up.

Smith who comes from Chicago is a small speedy guard. He is only 6'1", 168 lbs but watch out because he is a true defensive specialist. He has quick hands and is always ready to attack the opponent. Look for him to be in the game when there is serious pressure being forced on the opposing offense.

Last, but certainly not least is Ater Majok. A 6'10", 233 lbs forward who can really do it all. Listed as a freshman he has had some academic issues in the past but that is behind him.

Look for Majok to make an impact when he is eligible to play starting in January. He is from Australia and there are some scouts out there that he has the potential to be a Rudy Gay type playmaker.

This year's class has a lot of potential and is going to fill the void that was left by a 2008 team that almost made it three championships in 10 years. Then again, with the experience this team still has, look for them to be a very talented team in the loaded Big East conference.
