Projecting Greatness: Dauss, Lolich...Verlander

Elite.

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander finally earned the adulation with a remarkable 2009 campaign.

Starting on May 10, May's American League Pitcher of the Month led the Tigers on a 147-day first place expedition. Though Detroit was dramatically unseated by Minnesota in the 163rd game, it was no fault of Verlander's.

Among AL Triple Crown pitching categories, Verlander ran away with the strikeout title (269), shared the lead in wins (19) with Felix Hernandez and CC Sabathia, and placed sixth in earned run average (3.45).

That's two of three for the 26-year-old fireballer. He is sure to finish top five in Cy Young Award voting, if not top three.

Last year was not the same story, however.

Mired in a season-long slump, Verlander limped to an 11-17 record, posting a 4.84 earned run average. Rumors of injury and pitch-tipping grabbed ink in local papers. Many questioned if management let him pitch too many innings too early.

The adversity spawned a shift of focus.

Bringing a new disgust for the opposition to the mound every fifth day, Detroit's ace returned to the success of 2006 and 2007. The former AL Rookie of the Year abandoned corner-nibbling for sizzling, pin-point accuracy, walking 24 fewer batters in 39 more innings.

"He’s got a Roy Halladay breaking ball and a fastball that speaks for itself," said veteran infielder Ramon Vazquez.

This season's return to glory, combined with his Rookie of the Year Award, a no-hitter in 2007, and three 17-plus win seasons have certified his place among the vaunted. Detroit has a legitimate ace for the first time since Jack Morris.

Assuming owner Mike Ilitch locks him up for the long term, just how great could Verlander be in Detroit?

Substandard years like 2008 are not out of the realm of possibility, but there is no reason to suspect them to become the norm. Taking a realistic look, if Verlander can sidestep prolonged injury and average a modest 14 victories and 175 whiffs for 10 seasons he would sit at 205 wins and 2,496 strikeouts, well within striking distance of Detroit's all-time leaders.

The Tigers victory record holder is Hooks Dauss with 223, followed by George Mullin (209), and Mickey Lolich (207). Meanwhile, Lolich sets the strikeout tone (2,679), backed up by Jack Morris (1,980), and Hal Newhouser (1,770).

Amp his production up to 15 wins and 180 strikeouts over 12 seasons and you've got a new leader in both categories (245 wins and 2,906 K's).

Currently, Verlander ranks 34th in wins and 23rd in punch outs. Expecting him to continue such high-level production for a dozen years might be a tall order, but hasn't the former Old Dominion University star given us plenty of reason to believe?

Comerica Park: Detroit's Diamond in the Rough

This article was originally published on www.stadiumjourney.com.

Paul Swaney, a fellow Bleacher Report writer, set off on a mission to compile the baseball stadium experiences of writers in each MLB city. Below is my assignment reviewing the Motor City's home.

Construction

Completed in 2000, Comerica Park ushered the Tigers into the 21st century. A stark contrast from rustic Tiger Stadium, Detroit’s new wide-aisled, well-decorated home features many amusements for both adults and children.

Food & Beverage

Comerica Park offers a fairly wide array of food and beverages. From sushi, to Little Caesar’s Pizza, to baseball’s traditional fare, certain items may be priced a bit high, but most are affordable and the quality is not lacking.

Big Cat Court, behind first base, offers Mexican and Asian food, pizza, ice cream, and drinks. Full pizzas cost a lofty $14.50, but most other meals in this section don’t reach double-digit dollars. The same food price structure exists in the Beer Hall behind third base, where you can also select from 34 different beers.

Unless you’re seated in the infield, food and snack vendors appear sporadically. If you seek a beer vendor, however, you’re primed to see one or two per inning no matter where you’re perched. These cash-only salesman charge $3.75 for hot dogs, $8.25 for a large Labatt’s or Budweiser, and $4.00 for ice cream sandwiches.

Atmosphere

Clawing outside the main entrance, a 15-foot sculpture of a tiger greets those passing by. Comerica Park’s most popular photo opportunity, fans line up by the dozen to snap a picture underneath its foot-long teeth.

As you stroll the main concourse, a blend of aromas and visual displays of Tiger history bombard your senses. Several of baseball’s all-time greats reside in statue form in center field. Ty Cobb, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Willie Horton, Al Kaline, and Hal Newhouser take up permanent residence behind the brick Tigers Wall of Fame – a listing of some of Detroit’s most prominent figures.

Memorabilia displays set apart about every 100 feet between first and third base greet pedestrians, reminding them of teams that came before. Gloves and uniforms of Detroit’s great and not-so-great are contained in see-through cases, installed to educate young and old.

Perhaps the most glaring feature Comerica Park has to offer is not contained within it. Detroit’s picturesque skyline is visible from all fields, most notably on the third base side. This awe-inspiring view of occupied and vacant skyscrapers is reminiscent of the panorama outside a 15-story hotel suite.

A Ferris wheel, carousel, and massive center field water fountain are a few other structures that set Comerica Park apart from others.

Neighborhood

Let’s face it, Detroit does not make national headlines for its safety, but Comerica Park resides in the city’s mythical demilitarized zone. Ample lighting and a strong downtown police presence assure a secure, enjoyable visit, as long as one does not venture outside of established territory.

Unknown even to many locals, Cliff Bell’s at 2030 Park Avenue is a lavish venue where you can eat, drink, or catch a jazz band, just a few blocks from the stadium. With $2 happy hour specials and cocktail specials starting at $5, you can arrange a sophisticated stop that will be kind on your wallet. A Poetry Slam held every Monday welcomes participation from first-timers and veterans alike.

If the jazz bar scene does not pique your interests, don’t fret. Directly across Adams Street from Comerica Park (and Ford Field) rests the Elwood Bar & Grill (300 E. Adams), Detroit’s unofficial pre- and post-game station.

Shifted a few blocks from its original location to allow the construction of Comerica, the Art Deco-style Elwood has thrived since its slight relocation, becoming Detroit’s most congested bar when the Tigers and Lions take the field. Beer prices are moderate and meals are cheap (under $9).

Twenty-five umbrellaed picnic tables line the building, almost one for each different type of beer available (18). Beer tubs and musical performers appear on special occasions, most notably on Opening Day and during playoff runs.

Similar to the Elwood in congestion and proximity, Cheli’s Chili Bar at 47 E. Adams offers three levels, 36 flat-screen tv’s, and a rooftop deck that overlooks the stadium. Owned by former Detroit Red Wing and future Hall of Famer Chris Chelios, who frequently visits, Cheli’s chefs have mastered the art of American cooking. Don’t leave without trying the tasty waffle fries alongside your Cheli’s Chili 3-Way.

Prices are far from through the roof and the inside is very clean and organized. This casual environment will enhance your downtown experience, especially if you’re meeting friends on a radiant summer day.

Fans

In what might come as a surprise to outsiders, Detroit fans leave their tough guy image at the gate. Visitors, once nestled into their seats, should expect to engage in meaningful sporting conversation and debate.

Detroit is home to some of the most knowledgeable and hospitable fans in baseball and Comerica Park is a composite for Midwestern values. Though across the board all do not fit this wholesome description, the majority of Tigers fans are more than willing to dish about baseball’s current events or tip where to visit in the city.

Quiet fans, a surviving element from the pre-2006 days, sometimes limit the noise Comerica Park generates. The lean years of the 1990s and early 2000s created this sector, which still hasn’t learned how to express its appreciation for the Tigers. Luckily, the contained group hasn’t stifled the activity of everyone around them.

A hearty wave usually starts rolling around the stadium in the seventh inning, about the same time thousands lock arms, rock back and forth, and belt out “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.”

Access

Dozens of fenced-in parking lots and several multi-level garages make downtown parking a breeze. As you traverse steaming sewer caps, you will also notice prices stack up favorably compared to many other American League cities.

Within a five-minute walk, you can park securely for as cheap as $10, and if you don’t mind hiking 10 minutes to the stadium, you can park for as low as $7. If you prefer a spot in an official Comerica Park lot, be prepared to shell out $25.

Mixing the old with the new, classic Tiger Stadium bars run free shuttles to and from Comerica Park in an effort to remain relevant. The educated baseball game attendee recognizes this western shuttle as a way to avoid paying any parking fees, since lots around Michigan and Trumbull have become defunct. Though return lines can stretch halfway down right field when the game ends, sometimes forcing a 20-minute wait, it’s worth it considering you won’t be moving far anyway in the heavy traffic.

If you wish to access Comerica Park from the eastern Greektown area, you will find a vast land of parking lots around the same price range. Numerous restaurants and bars, such as Old Shillelagh’s, frequently shuttle customers and non-customers to the game. One warning: Prepare to party hard if you hop on one of these modes of transport.

Return on Investment

Detroit has the seventh lowest ticket price range in Major League Baseball, despite having a top-five payroll. From the $5 skyline seats, to the $77 on-deck circle seats, hard-working fans without a lot of dough can take in the Tigers. Combine the affordable parking, food prices, and a playoff baseball team, and you can line up a night on the town for under $40.

An increase in Detroit’s quality of play has made a night at Comerica Park a popular option – since 2006, almost 10 million fans have strolled through the gates.

Etc.

In an effort to “reduce our carbon footprint”, recycling containers accepting plastic objects sit next to garbage cans in the concourse on both levels. This environmental action saves thousands of non-biodegradable plastic cups from being improperly disposed of each game.

Owner Mike Ilitch also creates a family friendly atmosphere by installing a fireworks show after all Friday and Saturday games.

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Late-Season Improvements and Fernando Rodney

Welcome to Rudy Dominick and Johnny Lawrence's Week 21 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis. Each week, we will delve into all things Tigers.

Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On...

Adam Wilk, Starting Pitcher—West Michigan (A)
(At West Michigan)
2-1, 28.1 IP, 20 H, 2 BB, 24 K, 1.27 ERA

Drive-By Argument: Which Struggling Tiger Needs to Step Up More, Curtis Granderson or Edwin Jackson?

DOMINICK: Jackson.

In a season loaded with offensive disappointments, pitching has been the prime factor to Detroit's first-place stranglehold.

In fact, this year's squad resembles the 2006 Tigers who led baseball in earned run average. Justin Verlander and Kenny Rogers each won 17 games, while Jeremy Bonderman and Nate Robertson chipped in a combined 27 wins.

On offense, Craig Monroe led Detroit with 28 homers and only two players batted over .300 (Ivan Rodriguez and Carlos Guillen), demonstrating that pitching assumed responsibility for their deep playoff run.

Linking the two seasons, standout pitching in clutch situations has kept Detroit at a distance from the rest of the American League Central, not its' offense. In the rotation, Verlander leads the way with 13 wins, followed by super rookie Rick Porcello (11), and Jackson (10).

What good is an outstanding game from Granderson if the pitcher gave up six runs?

Jackson ranks third in the AL in quality starts, has given up three runs or less runs in all but three games.

Thus far, his performance has been far more pivotal than Granderson’s bat.

LAWRENCE: Granderson.

Rudy, Granderson can affect the outcome of every game, four times more the influence Jackson has.

Take notice of how the Tigers go as Granderson goes. His lowered batting average and walk totals have resulted in shorter innings with fewer baserunners, ultimately stunting Detroit's run output.

It appears he has adopted the approach of a cleanup hitter, having already smacked a career-high 25 out of the park. While the long ball is certainly a need for the Tigers, it isn't what they need atop the order.

If Granderson evolves back into the leadoff man of old, the edition who placed second in the AL with 112 runs last year, Miguel Cabrera and company will plate more runners.

Cabrera, Placido Polanco, and Magglio Ordonez have clubbed the ball all over the park in recent weeks, increasing the need for base traffic.

You certainly can't diminish what E-Jax has meant to the rotation, but with no one setting the table on a consistent basis, the struggling offense is leaving the first-place door open to all challengers.

Fernando Rodney: Unheralded, Essential To Playoff Run

Flashing back to 2006 once more, Rodney proved crucial to Detroit's run: 71.2 IP, 51 H, 65 K, 3.52 ERA.

Rodney, Joel Zumaya, and Todd Jones locked games down when handed the ball in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, similar to the work Brandon Lyon and Rodney have performed this year.

Since the Tigers improbable run to the World Series, Rodney transformed from dominant setup man, to on-and-off the disabled list, to a shutdown closer.

Tied for sixth the AL with 28 saves, Detroit's new finisher blew one save in his first 29 opportunities.

One-hundred and eighteen pitchers have blown more saves; among them are top-earning relievers Brian Fuentes, Brad Lidge, Jonathan Papelbon, and Francisco Rodriguez, as well as each closer in the AL Central.

The Yankees' Mariano Rivera, the Rockies' Huston Street, and Rodney stand in isolation among primary closers, with just one cough-up.

Is it a coincidence that each of these teams sit no lower than second place?

Detroit has held a grip on the division lead since May 12.

Much of their success can be attributed to the stability Rodney brought to the back end of the bullpen.

Going into Spring Training, general manager Dave Dombrowski believed free agent acquisition Lyon could earn the closing role.

"I don't look at him as a dominant-type closer, but our people think he can pitch at the back end of the pen." But inconsistencies plagued him and he struggled mightily. In 12 innings, he surrendered five home runs.

Consequently, Rodney won the job by default.

Ignoring the moans and groans from Detroit fans, he has since proven his worth. Rodney closed every game assigned to him from April 11 to Aug. 1.

Though not always fashionable, he has developed a propensity to work out of jams. Since the All-Star break, only Rivera (0.53) and Oakland's Andrew Bailey (1.96) have posted a lower earned-run average than the Tigers closer (2.04), who shines at Comerica Park.

A media and fan base once littered with skeptics doubts no more.

Rodney has converted Detroit's most vulnerable position into a strength.

Favorable Matchups

Aug. 28-31: DET Marcus Thames vs. TB Pitching (.307, 23-for-75, 4 HR).

Aug. 28-31: DET Aubrey Huff vs. TB Pitching (.301, 47-for-156, 11 HR).

Aug. 29: TB Jason Bartlett vs. DET Nate Robertson (.000, 0-for-22, 3 K).

When Derek Jeter Reaches 3,000 Hits, Will He Become the Greatest Yankee?

Coca Cola.

Mercedes-Benz.

The New York Yankees.

No other organization in baseball has built a brand quite like the Yankees.

Twenty-six World Championships, 57 seasons with at least 90 wins, 39 Hall of Fame players and managers.

Followers of the American League's most historically successful team take pride in the franchise's majestic legacy. Rival fans despise the overbearing media coverage and consistent success.

No matter which organization one decides to align with, this fact remains irrefutable: An inordinate amount of baseball's greats have donned the pinstripes.

Babe Ruth. Lou Gehrig. Joe DiMaggio. Mickey Mantle.

In households from coast to coast, people who have never played catch or scarfed down a ballpark frank recognize these names.

DiMaggio emerged as one of America's most compelling public figures after marrying actress Marilyn Monroe in 1954. Ruth and Mantle garnered national attention juggling late-night drinking binges, women, and playing baseball at the game's highest level.

The spotlight has shined upon this American institution for the better part of a century.

But the Yankees have lacked one thing amidst their exceptional 107-year run.

A 3,000 hit player.

No one has cracked the 3,000-hit barrier with the Yankees.

The closest? Lou Gehrig at 2,721 hits.

Certain to receive widespread attention in the coming weeks, Derek Jeter sits 20 hits away from the Iron Horse at 2,701.

A two-time Silver Slugger recipient, Jeter has surpassed 200 knocks six times and complied a .317 batting average in his illustrious career.

As it stands, the 35-year-old Jeter ranks 59th all-time in hits and can ascend into the 40's by season's end. On August 16, he buzzed past Luis Aparicio to become the shortstop hits leader, quite an achievement for a kid who grew up in the Midwest.

"It's amazing what he's been able to accomplish," said manager Joe Girardi to a New York Daily News reporter. "And he's still got a lot of baseball left."

Unless Jeter abruptly retires after his current contract expires next year, the captain is a virtual lock to become the first Yankee to surmount 3,000 hits. It may be unrealistic to expect him to cross the bridge in 2010; the most realistic target date is early 2011, barring extended injury.

Beyond the hit category, Jeter may also leave New York the all-time stolen base leader. He sits 30 shy of Rickey Henderson who racked up 326 in just five seasons with the team.

In an interview with Yankee beat writer Bryan Hoch, Andy Pettitte displayed admiration for the shortstop he played 12 seasons with.

"He's got a slump-proof swing. It's amazing to watch."

Whether he hangs up the cleats next year, in 2015, or 2020, Jeter has secured his place in New York Yankee history amongst the mythical figures.

Will September Be Placido Polanco's Last Month in Detroit?

Prior to the Midsummer Classic, Placido Polanco established himself as the least productive second baseman in the American League.

He held the third lowest AL batting average (.256) prior to the All-Star break among regulars at the position, as well as the third lowest of Detroit starters.

Hitting out of the No. 2 slot, his steep decline was magnified locally. And it is a story Detroiters have recently grown all too familiar with.

Another slow, deteriorating hitter soaking up roster space.

But it has truly been a tale of two seasons for Polanco.

Since the break, he is batting two points shy of .300 and has struck out just nine times in 147 plate appearances. The Tigers second baseman has returned to the patient contact hitter manager Jim Leyland expected to sustain the upper half of the order and set the table for ultra-RBI guy Miguel Cabrera.

A .302 hitter over 12 seasons, Polanco is approaching career highs in doubles (36, 2007) and runs batted in (67, 2007). Though he has underperformed since he turned 33 last October, Polanco should sit around .280 with 80 runs, 36 doubles, 10 homers, and 70 runs batted in at season's end. Above standard production for a defensively exceptional middle infielder.

Despite his resurgence, there remains the strong possibility general manager Dave Dombrowski will not retain free-agent-to-be Polanco.

The reason?

A younger, cheaper version of Polanco may exist in Triple-A Toledo.

Scott Sizemore quickly scaled the Tigers minor league ladder after Detroit drafted him in the fifth round in 2006. Sent to Single-A Oneonta for his first professional season, Single-A West Michigan in 2007, and Single-A Lakeland in 2008, the former Virginia Commonwealth University second baseman flourished at every stop.

This year he made a seamless midseason transition from Double-A Erie to Toledo. In 115 games, Sizemore is batting .301 with 138 hits, 33 doubles, five triples, 16 homers, 59 runs batted in, and 18 steals.

Offensively, the Tigers second baseman of the future shares many attributes with his predecessor. Though he possesses a little more power and speed, Sizemore displays a great deal of plate discipline like Polanco.

For under $1 million, Detroit projects to receive close to, or even more production from the second base position. And, undoubtedly, this lineup requires an injection of speed.

With $85.5 million wrapped up in six players next year and significant pay increases due for Justin Verlander and free agent Edwin Jackson, financial constraints may force Dombrowski to abandon Polanco. Expected to earn $7 to $10 million annually, his reacquisition would stifle efforts at plugging other more desperate holes on the roster.

Ripe for promotion, the Tigers will call Sizemore to join the Tigers when the roster expands to 40 on Sept. 1, if not sooner.

A 24-year-old prospect may write Polanco's eulogy in Detroit.

Detroit's 2009 Draftees Already Impressing in Minors

Detroit harvested a talented crop of players in June's amateur draft, finally inking several of their highest picks yesterday.

Jacob Turner (first-round), Andrew Oliver (second-round) and Daniel Fields (sixth-round) agreed to generous contracts before Monday's midnight deadline.

Overall, the Tigers signed nine of their top 10 selections, with eighth-round Baylor pitcher Craig Fristch being the only exception.

But many of Detroit's lower round picks signed compacts in June and have been thriving in the minor leagues since.

Here are a few standout performers from Detroit's 2009 class:

C: John Murrian, Oneonta (Round 9)

Perhaps the most productive 2009 Tiger draftee thus far, the former Winthrop University catcher is raking in Single-A Oneonta. His arrival couldn't have come at a better time—Detroit thirsts for high ceiling catching prospects.

141 AB, 47 H, 4 HR, 32 RBI, 2 SB, .333 AVG, .395 OBP.

SP: Adam Wilk, West Michigan (Round 11)

Already documented in the Keep An Eye On section of the Detroit Tigers Dissector, Wilk has experienced a Justin Verlander-like run of success early in his professional career. Verlander yielded a remarkable output his first step in the minors: 13 GS, 9-2, 86 IP, 70 H, 19 BB, 104 K, 1.67 ERA.

11 GS, 4-1, 61 IP, 39 H, 7 BB, 53 K, 1.48 ERA.

Expect to hear much more from this left-handed rotation prospect.

OF: Michael Rockett, Oneonta (Round 13)

Second to Murrian in batting average at Oneonta, Rockett is a tough out. The four-year college player from Texas-San Antonio could project as an extra Tigers outfielder a short way down the road.

210 AB, 65 H, 4 3B, 3 HR, 26 RBI, 2 SB, 33 K, .310 AVG.

SP/RP: Kevan Hess, Oneonta (Round 14)

Born in Kalamazoo, MI, the Western Michigan University righty skipped his senior year in the Mid-American Conference to enter the draft. Joining his older brother in the organization (Andrew Hess, 19th round, 2007), he throws a 94 mph fastball.

15 G, 2-0, 32.2 IP, 29 K, 3.31 ERA.

RP: Kenny Faulk, Oneonta (Round 16)

Like Wilk, Faulk is another left-handed prospect that has excelled early on. A deceptive 93 mph fastball earned the former Kennesaw State University pitcher the closer's role in Oneonta and Detroit has tagged him a relief pitcher to look out for.

20 G, 2-1, 23 IP, 24 K, 8 SV, 3.13 ERA.

1B/3B: Rawley Bishop, Oneonta (Round 19)

Bishop, the oldest player drafted by Detroit, earned a spot in the 2009 New York-Penn League All-Star Game. More developed than most of his peers, the 23-year-old has stood out in a league of high school and college-aged kids.

199 AB, 60 H, 5 HR, 37 RBI, .302 AVG, .388 OBP.

SP/RP: Cory Hamilton, Oneonta (Round 23)

Hamilton might be overachieving in his first professional season, but the righty has proved to be an effective rotation and bullpen piece so far. Competing in the powerful Big West Conference at UC-Irvine certainly prepared him for a higher level of play.

12 G, 3-4, 34.2 IP, 21 K, 2.86 ERA

Detroit Tigers Acquire Aubrey Huff from Baltimore Orioles

According to an Associated Press report, the Detroit Tigers have acquired Aubrey Huff from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for minor league pitcher Brett Jacobson.

Huff, a 10-year MLB veteran, adds a potent bat to the Tigers stumbling offense.

Through 430 at-bats, the infielder-outfielder hit .253 with 24 doubles, 13 homers, and 72 runs batted in.

For his career, the 32-year-old has compiled a .283 batting average, 201 homers and 739 runs batted in.

Huff played 93 games at first base and 17 at designated hitter with Baltimore this season.

Huff has not played the outfield since 2006 with the Houston Astros, but Detroit may ask him to fill in there on occasion.

The former Tampa Bay Ray, Astro, and Oriole is due $8 million in 2009.

Brett Jacobson, Detroit's fourth round selection in the 2008 draft, had pitched in 35 games for Single-A Lakeland. He posted a 3.74 earned run average in 55 1/3 innings with six saves.

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Magglio's Replacement Lurking In Erie?

Welcome to Rudy Dominick and Johnny Lawrence's Week 19 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis. Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers.

Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On...

Charles Furbush, Starting Pitcher—Lakeland Flying Tigers (A)
(Past Nine Starts)
2-2, 46.1 IP, 37 H, 9 BB, 45 K, 2.14 ERA

Drive By Argument: Was the Media-Hyped Red Sox Brawl A Positive for Detroit?

LAWRENCE: Though it was a pleasure to watch, I strongly disapprove of the actions Rick Porcello took.

To reset the circumstance, the Red Sox trailed 3-0 as Kevin Youkilis stepped to the plate in the second inning, having already been hit the night before.

Porcello plunked him on the first pitch, likely a response to Miguel Cabrera being hit twice in the series, then Youk set off immediately for the mound. Both benches cleared.

The ejected Porcello left the game in the hands of middling relievers.

In the midst of a pennant race, you don't want Chris Lambert pitching multiple innings against one of baseball's premier offenses.

And that's exactly who stepped in and coughed up the lead.

Let's be honest with ourselves, Lambert is a nice Triple-A pitcher and nothing more.

Porcello's decision cost the Tigers a shot at a win and possibly more distance from chasing rivals Chicago and Minnesota.

Reaching the playoffs should be the Tigers main concern, not seeking retribution against a team they won't see again until October or next year.

DOMINICK: Johnny, I'm going to take the opposite approach you did.

The 20-year-old rookie gained respect from teammates for protecting his hitters.

And his consequences were minimal—Major League Baseball suspended Porcello for five days, pushing his next start back one day.

I enjoyed his unexpected takedown of Kevin Youkilis, which should earn Porcello the nickname “El Matador” around the clubhouse.

He obviously has watched too many UFC fights or wrestled in high school.

Living in Connecticut, in the heart of Red Sox Nation, the brawl strengthened my dislike for Boston. Listening to their New England Sports Network announcers pat themselves on the back the whole game was more than this Tiger fan could take.

Despite the Tigers unfortunate loss, I expect it to spark new energy for a slumping team.

Brennan Boesch Seeks To Replace Magglio in Right

Magglio Ordonez redefined the word "clutch" during his tenure in the Motor City, though it seems like a lifetime ago Tiger fans last felt confident when he stepped up to the plate.

The harsh reality is his 2009 production ranks sorely below the standards he set and certainly miles away from the elite of the elite making $18 million or more.

There are only seven players who out-earn Magglio:

1. Alex Rodriguez, $33,000,000

2. Manny Ramirez, $23,854,494

3. Derek Jeter, $21,600,000

4. Mark Teixeira, $20,625,000

5. Carlos Beltran, $19,243,682

6. Carlos Lee, $19,000,000

Rather than go down the road of whether or not the Tigers should keep or cut him, let's shift the focus to Detroit's future in right field. After all, an aging Ordonez assures the Tigers will soon need a new man to patrol Kaline's corner.

If the Tigers seek a productive youngster to heal their wounds, they should look east to Erie, PA.

24-year-old Brennan Boesch is having a breakout season with the Double-A SeaWolves.

Standing 6’6” 210lbs, Boesch was selected by Detroit in the third round of the 2006 draft. He paces the Eastern League in home runs with 25, five more than second place Cleveland prospect Carlos Santana.

Despite a mediocre .265 batting average, he has knocked 79 runs home, smacked seven triples, and stole seven bases. Boesch ranks third in the E.L. in runs batted in and fifth in slugging percentage (.526).

His left-handed bat could give Detroit a more balanced lineup and provide protection for Cabrera, if he develops as hoped.

Defensively, his glove is developing as quickly as his bat.

Through 104 games, Boesch has committed six fielding errors, the same number of errors all last season at High-A Lakeland.

This week I attended two Erie games against the New Britain Rock Cats and classify Boesch as an all-or-nothing type hitter with above average speed.

In the first game, he launched a ball over the right field wall and flew out three times to Rock Cat outfielders. He also gunned down a runner attempting to stretch a single into a double from deep right.

While Boesch may not blossom into a perennial All-Star, he could someday provide Detroit manager Jim Leyland a new left-handed power option.

A non-righty slugger with above-average speed (only one caught stealing) would be a suitable roster filler when 35-year-old Ordonez says goodbye.

Favorable Matchups

August 14: DET Placido Polanco vs. KC Zack Greinke (.371, 13-for-35, 0 K).

August 14: DET Jarrod Washburn vs. KC Mark Teahen (.176, 2-for-17, 3 K).

August 16: DET Armando Galarraga vs. KC (2-0, 27 IP, 28 K, 1.67 ERA).

For comments or questions, contact us at: JohnnyAndRudy@Gmail.com.

Troy Tulowitzki's Cycle a Mockery of Hallowed Baseball Record

Similar to the fame gained from sluggers using performance-enhancing drugs, Troy Tulowitzki's cycle Monday night was cemented by rule bending.

But this deceit was not his own creation.

The Rockies shortstop homered in the first inning, struck a single in the next frame, then doubled in the fourth leaving him just a triple shy of the cycle.

In his fourth at-bat, Tulowitzki torched a pitch down the left field line.

As the play developed, it was clear from the get-go he would easily coast into second for a double.

But then Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano bobbled the ball, triggering in Troy's mind advice teammate Brad Hawpe gave him earlier in the game.

“We were sitting on the bench together and he was telling me, ‘If you get anywhere close to getting a triple you better go,”’ Tulowitzki said.

Destined to make history, he chugged around second to attempt a triple.

Though it was clear Soriano's bobble afforded Tulowitzki the opportunity to stretch his double into a three-bagger, he received help once again when the relay throw beat him to the base but bounced under the glove of Chicago third baseman Jake Fox.

Had the throw been on target, he would have been out by 12 feet.

After the dust settled, Rockies' official scorer Dave Plati credited Tulowitzki with a triple and he became the sixth player to hit for the cycle this year.

Two should-have-been errors on one play converted the sure double into a three base gift, handing Tulowitzki the rare designation.

But I felt as if I was watching a bunt break up a ninth inning no-hitter.

How fair is it that Tulowitzki receives credit for accomplishing something only 246 players have in over 100 years of baseball, despite the glaring no-calls?

Plati hand-wrapped and delivered Tulowitzki this historically significant feat, and I'm not so sure it should not be taken away from him for the sake of integrity.

The mistake was made in the scorer's box, not on the field, so do not blame Tulowitzki for his top-flight performance.

A far too generous scoring of the play cheapened the magnitude of this historically uncommon event.

Detroit Tigers Dissector: 2010 Free Agent Possibilities

Welcome to Rudy Dominick and Johnny Lawrence's Week 18 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis. Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers.

Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On...

Nate Bump, Starting Pitcher—Toledo Mud Hens (AAA)
(Since July 7)
4-0, 33.1 IP, 30 H, 8 BB, 15 K, 2.97 ERA

Drive-By Argument: Detroit Deadline Moves, Success or Failure?

DOMINICK: Success. Jarrod Washburn's arrival gives the Tigers a trio as imposing as any rotation in the big leagues.

He fills two much needed areas Detroit lacked: a quality left-hander and veteran pitcher on the staff.

To top things off, Washburn ran a 3-1 record against AL Central teams this season with a 0.78 ERA, 21 strikeouts, and just four walks in 34.1 innings.

Regarding the players Detroit lost, Luke French came out of nowhere to give Detroit a lift, but wasn't expected to contribute in the long haul. So really nothing was lost.

And Maurico Robles is talented, but had question marks weighing only 160 lbs. at Single-A Lakeland.

Tiger fans should be hoping this veteran lefty can ensure more Detroit police officers will get assaulted with champagne as Kenny Rogers did in the 2006 playoffs.

Detroit was a big winner and hopefully can retain Washburn at season's end to negate the Chicago White Sox new addition Jake Peavy.

LAWRENCE: Failure. Detroit didn't only fail to acquire a bat, they lost their only speed in Josh Anderson when the Royals claimed him off waivers.

Sure Washburn was a nice addition, but look at how poor the offense is performing.

Fact: The Tigers rank 10th or lower in the American League in batting average, runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and stolen bases.

Fact: One everyday player is batting above .270 (Miguel Cabrera).

Fact: Clete Thomas protects Cabrera in the lineup. Yes, I said Clete Thomas.

Does that lineup strike fear into you, Rudy?

Tiger pitching will stack up nicely down the home stretch, so let's pray for a meaningful waiver wire claim from general manager Dave Dombrowski to help support our team.

What To Do With Magglio's Money?

Since June 28, Magglio Ordonez's batting average has held steady.

The only problem is it's still unimpressive.

For six weeks, Ordonez has bounced between .258 and .265. This tightly-woven standstill is less than encouraging, and Magglio's fate needs to be determined within the next few weeks.

Will he produce like a $15 million-a-year player in the second half, or will the Tigers release him to avoid future contractual obligations?

If Ordonez takes the plate another 222 times, Detroit must pay him $18 million next season, and $15 million the year after.

That's $33 million for a sharply declining hitter on an offensively lackluster squad.

To accurately analyze what decision Dombrowski should make, let's look outside of Detroit at the free agents available in next year's class who could replace Maggs or fill other holes on the roster.

Chone Figgins, Jason Bay, Matt Hollliday, and Carl Crawford may test the free agent market this winter.

Brandon Webb, Erik Bedard, Rich Harden, Justin Duchscherer, John Lackey, Cliff Lee, as well as new-Tiger Jarrod Washburn are potential options for the rotation.

Would the Tigers receive the better value in a returning Magglio, or Figgins, Crawford or a combination of free agents?

Figgins is a switch hitting speedster with 31 stolen bases and a .308 AVG along with a versatility unmatched by most. Also advantageous, he has manned every fielding position on the diamond except first base and catcher.

Crawford would inject speed into the lineup though it remains unlikely his $10 million team option would be declined by the Tampa Bay Rays.

It's production versus past results.

Clearly, Detroit needs a hitter to protect Cabrera. Ordonez has not fulfilled the role this season opening the door to new possibilities.

A slugger in the mold of Jason Bay or Matt Holliday would ensure protection for Cabrera, but would require $8-$14 million per season.

In the infield, Placido Polanco turns free agent at season's end and his Tiger future remains in doubt.

Polanco has been a staple of consistency with a career .302 average, but it seems his age (33) may be starting to catch up to him highlighted by his current .039 point decline this year.

Youngster Scott Sizemore, Detroit's future second baseman is unproven at the major league level and appears to have fielding deficiencies with six errors in 42 games at Triple-A Toledo.

In 2007, the Tigers acquired slugger Gary Sheffield to stirke fear into opposing pitchers. This offseason, Detroit needs to execute a similar move.

The sudden decline of several Detroit veterans has shown that it's time to bid farewell to over-paid, under-productive players.

Favorable Matchups

August 7: DET Armando Galarraga vs. MIN Delmon Young (.118, 2-for-17, .167 OBP).

August 8: DET Justin Verlander vs. MIN Michael Cuddyer (.167, 4-for-24, 1 XBH).

August 8: DET Carlos Guillen vs. MIN Glen Perkins (.500, 5-for-10, 1 HR).

Big Ten Contender Emerging in East Lansing?

Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio is working to elevate the Spartans to elite Big Ten standing.

In 1999, he guided the secondary when MSU earned a Citrus Bowl victory over Florida, its last significant postseason win.

Since that famed year, the Spartans have redefined mediocrity. Posting a 49-49 record, they have reached just three bowl games.

But positive momentum is surging in East Lansing.

On the recruiting trail, Dantonio has transformed MSU into a legitimate option for high level recruits, bringing in talent typically destined for other locations. A number of local high schoolers who might have selected Michigan, Ohio State, or other BCS colleges earlier in the decade are now choosing the Spartans.

Why the sudden change?

To start, Dantonio believes to build a perennial contender, a team must first focus on the home front. After turning in seven and nine-win seasons, in 2007 and 2008 respectively, he is earning respect for turning around an historically turbulent program.

And, of course, positive momentum yields better recruits.

What also can not be ignored is the philosophy change Michigan instituted upon the arrival of new coach Rich Rodriguez. Rodriguez prefers to scour the nation for players without focusing on one particular city or state.

This philosophy may push the Wolverines back into the limelight one day, but for now, it hands MSU a noticeable advantage in the battle for Michigan talent.

So, in a way, you can label U-M "enablers."

2009 proved a statement year on the recruiting trail, as significant strides to upgrade the Spartans roster were made.

According to Rivals.com rankings, MSU reeled in eight of the state's top 11 players.

Offensively, Dantonio added a few certified local weapons in running backs Edwin Baker (Oak Park HS) and Larry Caper (Battle Creek Central HS), along with quarterback prospect Andrew Maxwell (Midland HS) and tight end Dion Sims (Orchard Lake St. Mary's HS).

On the defensive side, Dantonio and staff compiled one of the nation's most impressive bundles of linebackers. Two of the most talented, Chris Norman and Jeremy Gainer, hail from Detroit.

While the bulk of his outline is centered around bringing in Michigan players, he also successfully dips into other Midwestern states, most notably Ohio.

As mentioned in a recent article by MSU writer Francisco Velazquez, Dantonio plucked this year's Preseason Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Greg Jones, out of Cincinnati's Moeller High in 2007.

And the trend to bring talented Ohioans to East Lansing continues.

Mark Dantonio spent 17 years coaching football in Ohio. In 2002, he served as the defensive coordinator for national champion Ohio State. A year later, he headed south to lead the Cincinnati Bearcats for three years before returning to the Big Ten.

His tenures allowed him to build lasting relationships with Ohio coaches and community members.

On National Signing Day in February, six Buckeye State prospects inked with the Spartans. Leading the pack, Nate Klatt of Canal Fulton, OH ranked in the national top 10 on every major online recruiting service at offensive center.

The Michigan and Ohio recruiting momentum has carried into 2010's freshman class.

Legacy recruit Max Bullough became the first MSU commitment last October, a national top three linebacker from Traverse City St. Francis HS. His grandfather, Hank Bullough, played on MSU's 1952 Rose Bowl champion team.

Beyond Bullough, several other MSU's pledges are garnering serious national attention.

For the second consecutive year, the Spartans secured a Rivals.com four-star quarterback. Joe Boisture, of Saline HS, selected Michigan State after previously committing to Boston College. His addition brings necessary depth to the most important position on the field.

Isaiah Lewis, one of the country's most highly sought after safeties, pledged to MSU last week. From Indianapolis, Lewis models himself after Colts safety Bob Sanders and is rumored to deliver blows similar to his NFL luminary.

But perhaps the biggest signing thus far in the Dantonio era is William Gholston out of Detroit Southeastern HS.

Gholston held scholarship offers from Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, Southern California, and other elite programs, but his comfort level with MSU's coaches assured him they were serious about winning, and winning soon.

By now, most know he is a 6'7", 240 pound defensive end/linebacker who is the cousin of former Ohio State All-American and current New York Jet Vernon Gholston. Identified by ESPN.com and Rivals.com as the top prospect in Michigan, he reminds MSU coaches of former Spartan and 10-year NFL veteran Julian Peterson.

Though it was reported by the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press that Gholston would be visiting other schools because he wishes to play strictly linebacker at the next level, he has vehemently dismissed these stories as "inaccurate."

Gholston remains firmly committed to MSU, will not be visiting any other schools, and also addressed his misinterpreted linebacker quote.

"I didn't really mean it and I was just joking with him," Gholston said. "I'll play anything the coach needs me to play. I've said it before, if I had to play kicker that I would play kicker." (SpartanMag.com)

Dantonio's goal each season is to capture a Big Ten title, and piece by piece, he is adding exceptional talent inching them closer to contention.

Brandon Lyon: From Abused To Admired

Brandon Lyon came to Detroit with closer expectations, but a poor Spring Training and an awful first two months derailed the Tigers' plans.

Fernando Rodney landed the late-inning role by default.

Only the most ardent of Lyon fans can admit they weren't calling for his release around the time manager Jim Leyland made this proclamation.

In April, Lyon picked up two losses and blew a save, surrendering six runs in his first 11 innings.

And May proved almost fatal for Lyon, as he struggled much more noticeably than his debut month. In one fewer inning, he allowed nine runs on 11 hits, five walks, and three homers.

But since the calendar turned June, Lyon has been downright filthy.

His evolution began on June 2 against Boston when he pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

18 days passed before he gave up another run.

Then 11 more days, and so on.

In Lyon's 29 1/3 innings since turning the page in early June, the former Diamondback has fanned almost as many as he has allowed to reach base (25 baserunners-to-24 K).

More importantly, Lyon ceased giving up the late-inning homers (0 since May 26).

At Comerica Park, he is near flawless. In 19 1/3 innings, the opposition bats a measly .185. Against lefties, the split is a comparable .194 with no long balls.

According to Detroit's pitching coach, Rick Knapp, the addition of a cut fastball to his game day arsenal is responsible for the stark contrast.

"Lyon started using a cutter, something he had, but was not using," Knapp said. "And it's become a weapon."

"He throws his sinker in and his cutter away. And his velocity has come up from Spring Training, when it was 89-to-92 (mph). Now, it's 92-94. It makes him a different guy."

No more straight gopher balls from Lyon.

The one-year, $4.25 million contract General Manager Dave Dombrowski issued Lyon in the offseason is beginning to look like a bargain, as he has solved the Tigers' severe set-up issues.

If Rodney slips up in the late innings, Lyon will be the next to slide in, but Rodney's excellence in save situations will likely prevent Lyon from getting the opportunity he came to Detroit to receive.

Approximately 11,016,000 babies have been born since Lyon last watched the ball fly over a fence on his watch. At this current rate of success, the world will welcome another 11 million before Lyon gets taken deep again.

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Luke French, Prospects and Contention

Welcome to Rudy Dominick and Johnny Lawrence's Week 17 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis. Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers.

Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On...

Cory Satterwhite, Relief Pitcher—Erie Seawolves (AA)
(July)
12 IP, 9 H, 13 K, 4 SV, 0.75 ERA

Drive-By Argument: Will Luke French Cut It With The Tigers?

LAWRENCE: Luke French does not fire the hardest fastball, have the sharpest break, or possess Greg Maddux-type pinpoint control.

He simply takes care of business more often than not.

Just as Armando Galarraga ascended from the depths of the minor league system and evolved into a legitimate rotation option last year, French has enjoyed measurable success at the end of the staff.

His strikeout total does not wow you, but his response to runners in scoring position should. So far, his RISP stacks up favorably against Detroit's other starters. Though he has succeeded in a smaller sample size, he holds batters to a .205 average with runners in scoring position.

French will not consistently carry the Tigers into the eighth and ninth innings, but he can suitably fill some of the large void created by washed up arms Nate Robertson and Dontrelle Willis.

DOMINICK: While every Tiger fan wishes success upon French, Detroit cannot rely on upon an unheralded rookie for a serious playoff run.

One-hit wonders happen every year, and though I'm not officially labeling him such, many signs point in that direction. In his last start against Texas, he came crashing down back to reality. French allowed eight hits and walked two, surrendering five runs in five innings.

French is more likely to rest in the same one-hit wonder category as the 1990's band Spacehog, rather than achieve a legendary status like Metallica.

"In the meantime" we should enjoy French's 15 minutes of fame while it lasts and hope for an improved rotation in 2011 when Bonderman, Robertson, and Willis come off the books.

Detroit, Don't Get So Caught Up With Prospects

Every year, the trading deadline slowly approaches and passes.

Experts speculate, fans react.

Whether to increase the likelihood of a playoff berth, or to build a future contender, the conversation topic eventually shifts toward "prospects."

In Detroit, the inescapable Doyle Alexander-for-John Smoltz talks painfully reappear each summer.

Former Tigers GM Bill Lajoie and former team president Jim Campbell battled over which pitcher to send to Atlanta to acquire Alexander, Steve Searcy or John Smoltz. On August 12, 1987, Campbell won out and sent Smoltz packing because Searcy was thought to be more Major League ready.

Epic fail.

Along those same lines, 2007's Jair Jurrjens-Edgar Renteria deal had the feel of the Smoltz swap. Detroit received a veteran primed to put the team over the top, while giving up a high-ceiling, young arm.

Chalk this up in the loss column, too.

Outside of Detroit, similar deals have been struck in recent times.

In 2002, Bartolo Colon shifted to Montreal for a half season, as Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, and Brandon Phillips wound up in Cleveland.

And current Tiger Carlos Guillen was traded to Seattle with Freddie Garcia and John Halama for rental Randy Johnson in 1998.

None of the mentioned teams won a World Series that season and the players given up went on to shine for new teams.

If a general manager were to look exclusively at these one-sided trades, it would prod him to keep his prospects close to his vest.

But despite horrifying deadline stories, the fact remains.

To get something, you must give up something.

Now let's apply this logic to the Tigers' current situation. Detroit thirsts for consistent hitting and the back end of the rotation remains unproven.

Upgrading may be difficult in this trade market, as most teams are following the protocol Toronto set in Roy Halladay trade negotiations and asking a king's ransom for proven talent.

Detroit has been linked to Adam Dunn, Jarrod Washburn, and even placed an inquisitive phone call centered around Halladay to Blue Jay shot-caller, J.P. Riccardi.

So far no results.

Determining which Tiger prospects to be made expendable for these players is an exacting challenge. With no scientific formula at a GM's disposal, he must weigh what prospects he can and can't afford to give up.

As teams like the Washington Nationals and Pittsburgh Pirates look to rise again from the youth of other organizations, they do their best to avoid risky transactions.

With that being said, an immeasurable amount of Tiger prospects fail to live up to expectation. Most, it turns out, would offer more to Detroit in the talent they could reel in if traded away.

From 2000 to 2003, Detroit selected 24 players in rounds one through five.

Only one of the 24 flowered into a full-time contributor (Curtis Granderson).

The rest? Unspent resources.

GM Dave Dombrowski's track record has certainly been more impressive than the previous tenure, but nature states a large number of draftees will sink through the cracks.

If there was a way to spot the future underachievers, Detroit could certainly build a powerful team before the deadline. Instead, Detroit must weigh to varying levels, their prospects versus trade targets.

As long as Dombrowski realizes that only the rarest of prospects should be considered untouchable, the Tigers may wind up a more viable contender come August 1.

Favorable Matchups

July 31: DET Curtis Granderson vs. CLE Fausto Carmona (12-for-27, 1 HR, .516 OBP).

July 31-August 2: CLE Jhonny Peralta vs. DET Fernando Rodney (.071, 1-for-14, 6 K).

July 31-August 2: CLE Jhonny Peralta vs. DET Armando Galarraga (.150, 3-for-20, 3 K).

For comments or questions, contact us at: JohnnyAndRudy@Gmail.com.

Detroit Tigers Promote Reliever Casey Fien

After Friday's doubleheader sweep of the Chicago White Sox, Detroit sent victorious starter Eddie Bonine back to Triple-A Toledo to make room for right-handed relief pitcher Casey Fien.

Fien, a 25-year-old hurler from Santa Rosa, CA, excelled at Toledo.

In 47.1 innings, he punched out 51 batters, while walking just 13. He also led the Mud Hens in saves with eight.

But success is not unique to this season for Fien.

He has impressed at every level since he was selected in the 20th round of the 2006 draft.

With Single-A West Michigan in 2007, Fien appeared in 39 games, striking out 77 in 61 innings.

He split the following season between Double-A Erie and Toledo. Fien found rapid advancement to Toledo after he put up a 2.96 earned run average in 45.2 innings with the SeaWolves. Post-promotion, he tossed 15 more innings, surrendering just four runs.

Fien's minor league track record is very impressive: 211.2 innings, 47 walks, 224 strikeouts, 3.07 earned run average.

Joel Zumaya's most recent injury left a glaring need for another reliable righty.

If he flourishes in his first go-around with the Tigers, he will surely figure into the Tigers' long-term plans.

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Will Chicago Unseat The Tigers?

Welcome to Rudy Dominick and Johnny Lawrence's Week 16 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis. Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers.

Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On...

Michael Bertram, First Base—Lakeland Flying Tigers (A)
(Since July 18)
.590, 13-22, 1 HR, 7 RBI

Drive-By Argument: Whose Back End Of The Lineup Is Stronger, Chicago or Detroit?

Chicago
Gordon Beckham: .291, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 3 SB.
Chris Getz: .262, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 13 SB.
Jayson Nix: .220, 6 HR, 12 RBI, 5 SB.
DeWayne Wise: .196, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 2 SB.

Detroit
Adam Everett: .246, 2 HR, 27 RBI, 3 SB.
Brandon Inge: .260, 21 HR 58 RBI, 2 SB.
Gerald Laird: .236, 4 HR 23 RBI, 1 SB.
Ramon Santiago: .254, 6 HR 25 RBI, 0 SB.

DOMINICK: In my mind, Detroit's lineup is stronger seven through nine.

Head-to-head, I would take Inge and Detroit's shortstops over Chicago's second basemen (Getz/Nix) and whomever else on most given days.

Brandon Inge, a first time All-Star, gives Detroit the most productive player in the bunch. He is the runaway leader in homers and runs batted in.

While Laird's accomplishments are centered around defense and managing the pitching staff, he has provided at least a .250 average in every month except May (.178).

Beckham is a former No. 1 overall draft selection and has far more upside than Santiago or Everett, but Ramon has continued to improve offensively in recent years. Detroit wins this battle because Beckham is not ready to contribute at a consistent high level. If Chicago falters in its' attempt to take the AL Central crown, the end of the order will be a large reason why.

LAWRENCE: I vehemently disagree with you this week, Rudy.

Chicago possesses more weapons at the bottom, especially with the big league emergence of Beckham. The Rookie of the Year candidate is batting .339 in July, including seven multi-hit efforts.

Just like Beckham, rookie second sacker Chris Getz has also improved as the season has progressed. The three-time All-State selection from Grosse Pointe South is hitting at a .333 clip so far this month.

While the weak links are evident at the bottom of each lineup, Chicago possesses pop and speed unlike Detroit. Inge's remarkable turn around has been well-documented to this point, but beyond Inge, few Tigers have stepped up beyond the sixth slot.

A third 2-1 defeat in four games cements my point. Get some help Tigers!

Will Chicago Barrel Over Detroit On The Way To First?

This is Week Two of our mid-season Minnesota and Chicago analysis. In our final installment, we will focus upon the White Sox threat to Detroit.

Second to Minnesota, Chicago has won two division titles since 2004, only once finishing below third. Much like the Twins, a strong pitching presence has kept the White Sox competitive in the light-hitting AL Central.

But on June 12, things looked bleak on the South Side. Chicago sat six-and-a-half games behind Detroit at 28-34.

Ineffective starting pitching lent to their disappointing beginning. Through the end of May, Gavin Floyd and Jose Contreras had contributed absolutely nothing to Chicago's repeat divisional attempt. Floyd put up a distasteful 6.11 earned run average in 60.1 innings, while Contreras underachieved at 8.32 in six starts.

When these arms began picking up the slack in June, the team hurdled itself up the standings. Chicago won 22 of the next 33 games, including the perfect game turned in by Mark Buehrle today.

Now sitting in a first-place tie with Detroit, Chicago travels to Detroit tomorrow to kick off a four-game series. With an opportunity to knock the Tigers out of the driver's seat for the first time since May 9, Chicago will smuggle a cache of hot bats and arms into Comerica Park.

Hot or not, Chicago players commonly present matchup problems for Detroit.

Since 2006, noted Tiger killers Jermaine Dye and Jim Thome have smacked 14 homers off Detroit pitching. In his career, Thome has shaken 59 dingers out off Tiger hurlers, who will at least deserve a thank you card upon his induction into baseball's Hall of Fame.

Luckily for slumping Tiger batters, they will not have to face the one pitcher who has owned them more than any over the decade. Buerhle, whose turn in the rotation does not come again until July 28, carries a career 14-8 record and 2.99 earned run average in 28 appearances against Detroit.

They will, however, not be able to avoid the much improved and always-dominant-against-Detroit Floyd. Undefeated against Detroit in his career (4-0), Floyd will toe the mound on Saturday.

Steam is pouring out of the White Sox dugout, and if the Tigers fail to start swinging the bats, they may be looking up at Chicago for weeks to come.

Favorable Matchups

July 24: DET Justin Verlander vs. CHI (Last Start: 9 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 9 K).

July 24-26: DET Brandon Lyon vs. CHI Batters (0.00, 5.1 IP, 1 H, 6 K).

July 26: DET Magglio Ordonez vs. CHI John Danks (.588, 10-for-17, 1 HR, 6 RBI).

For comments or questions, contact us at: JohnnyAndRudy@Gmail.com.

Dan Haren: The Best Pitcher No One Is Talking About

Zack Greinke's season-opening streak provoked a rush to the history books, Roy Halladay speculation stimulated "what if's" from fans nationwide, and the Giants' Johnathan Sanchez tossed a no-hitter amid a mediocre campaign.

Perhaps if Dan Haren had to battle back from anxiety or topped every MLB team's wish list, than he too would receive the ink the others are soliciting.

Among these pitchers, only one has pitched into the sixth inning in each game this season.

Only one has yielded fewer baserunners than innings pitched.

Only one sports an earned run average south of 2.00.

That pitcher is Haren.

Hitters fear Haren more than most. They recognize the difficulty and significance of reaching base against him.

In 138 innings, he has surrendered 93 hits and 18 bases on balls. Unheard of in any era, Haren's WHIP (walks and hits per nine innings) measures in at an astounding 0.80.

Wish to know the next closest qualified "competitor" in this category? Tim Lincecum is miles away, at 1.04.

Houston Astros manager, Cecil Cooper, commented after a June 12 meeting with Arizona, “He’s real efficient with his pitches. He pitches in the zone. He pitches ahead. He attacks the zone with his fastball and his cutter and slider and everything.”

This prophetic statement remains applicable six starts later.

Haren has frequently thrown hitters off balance with the strongest pitch in his arsenal, a split-finger fastball.

But his second, third, and fourth pitches are what separates him from the pack.

Well, at least that what former Oakland A's and current Milwaukee Brewers manager, Ken Macha, professes.

“He threw a lot more fastballs for me when he pitched (in 2005-06) and he didn’t have the cut fastball. So that’s something that he’s picked up. If you go out there and throw 92, 92, 92, somebody’s going to hit it. But when you’ve got these other pitches you throw for strikes, that 92 looks like 102. It’s right by you.”

Haren throws offspeed pitches when fastballs are anticipated, and vice-versa. Exceptional command provides him the ability to keep hitters guessing.

And he can hit, too.

In 43 at-bats, Haren has 11 hits, including a homer to center field against the Cincinnati Reds.

There is no telling where Haren's season will take him, but if his performance thus far is any indicator, Diamondback fans have much to look forward to.

His 1.96 earned run average, .187 batting average against, and 138 innings rank first in baseball, and he looks to improve his eye-popping statistics down the stretch.

Haren is turning in one of the more impressive seasons in recent memory. Let us all turn our heads from the less deserving to observe his remarkable contributions.

1991 Topps: Top 10 Baseball Cards

Like many kids, my baseball addiction began in a grocery store aisle.

On each trip to the store, mom made sure we never left without a red, see-through pack of 1991 Topps baseball cards.

Pack after pack, both my collection and desire to learn more about the game grew uncontrollably.

Before my family had ESPN or games could be streamed online, baseball cards served as the ultimate educational tool.

Without baseball cards, I would have never known Brett Butler led the American League with 14 triples in 1986 or that Phil Plantier walked 62 times with Pawtucket in 1990.

Just as radio inspired imagery in its' early days, Topps fulfilled my visual needs.

Here are my top ten Topps baseball cards of 1991:
Begin Slideshow

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Minnesota, Chicago Roadblocks To Second Half

Welcome to Rudy Dominick and Johnny Lawrence's Week 15 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis. Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers.

Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On...

Adam Wilk, Starting Pitcher—Oneonta Tigers (A)
(Since June 24)
1-0, 18 IP, 10 H, 19 K, 0.00 ERA

Drive-By Argument: Does Chicago or Minnesota Pose A More Significant Second-Half Threat To Detroit?

LAWRENCE: John Danks, Gavin Floyd and Jose Contreras finally turned the corner for the White Sox in June. Together, they posted a 2.04 earned run average over 105.2 innings.

Beyond these three surging pitchers, a surprisingly effective Bartolo Colon nears a return to the bigs—if the Charlotte Knights ever track him down. While few teams can boast three quality starters, Chicago may be sitting on four come late July.

Just as Chicago's pitching is coming of age, Scott Podsednik and Alexei Ramirez are picking up an offense that went stagnant early in the season.

Podsednik's reacquisition filled the desperate holes at center field and lead-off, while Ramirez has scorched the ball after a .214 April. Teamed with imposing figures in the heart of the order, the White Sox stack up well against anybody.

And let's not forget, Chicago beat out Minnesota for the AL Central crown last year.

DOMINICK: Sorry, Mr. Lawrence, but Chicago's shot at the AL Central crown died when Cy Young winner Jake Peavy refused a trade to the Windy City.

Minnesota is always a consistent threat and Detroit's main competition this season.

Joe Mauer, healthy and on fire, joins Tiger-killers Justin Morneau and Joe Nathan, who is a perfect 28-for-28 in career save attempts against Detroit.

Their starters have a combined 4.60 ERA, yet remain in the race despite their high team ERA. One can only expect that number to improve.

Youth sides with the Twins, so Minnesota will be able to avoid the late-season decline veterans often experience. Chicago has far too many aging players—Jose Contreras, an unconfirmed 64 years of age, should wear down, as will several other veterans.

Lawrence, you rank Detroit and Chicago's rotations at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in your recent American League Rotation Rankings. Following your lead, I would prefer Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson, and company over Mark Buerhle, John Danks, and crew.

Chicago's offense doesn't inject fear into me, but maybe that's because several of their players are old enough for 20-year-old Rick Porcello to call "Dad."

Minnesota: Possible Roadblock To Detroit's First Ever Central Division Title

In each Detroit Tigers Dissector thus far, we have included a Drive-By Argument and a feature article covering a separate topic. For the next two weeks we will change course slightly and expand upon each Detroit rival.

Minnesota has won three division titles since 2004, never once finishing below third. Steady and consistent, a dearth of nationally unrecognized pitching talent joins All-Stars Mauer and Morneau.

But on May 20, a six-game losing streak reversed the Twins' trend, dropping them to 18-23.

Possibly the biggest contributor to their lackluster beginning was a spotty bullpen. Through May 19, Twins' relievers posted a 5.19 earned run average. April was particularly tough for Minnesota, as the bullpen surrendered nine homers through the first 22 games.

Minus setup man Pat Neshek, an offseason Tommy John surgery recipient, it took some time before Manager Ron Gardenhire discovered who belonged in what role.

Since the slow beginning, however, Minnesota has ripped off a 27-21 record to climb above .500.

Eventually, pieces fell into place in the bullpen. Matt Guerrier and R.A. Dickey filled major holes and now consistently hand the lead to Nathan in the ninth. Combined, the duo sports a 2.15 earned run average since the beginning of May.

Though the rotation is still scuffling, Minnesota's bats have done more than enough to keep the Twins in the race.

In typical Mauer fashion, his batting average sits closer to .400 than .300 (.373). Meanwhile, Morneau, Jason Kubel, Michael Cuddyer, and Joe Crede have supplied power atypical of a Twin Cities team.

29th in the Majors in homers last season with 111, Minnesota needs just 15 more bombs to top that mark. They rank 12th in the category at the break.

With 10 games remaining against first-place Detroit, Minnesota possesses multiple opportunities to narrow the slim four game lead.

The Twins' are no stranger to late season surges and Tigers Manager Jim Leyland certainly does not expect them to peel back in the second half.

Favorable Matchups

July 17: DET Brandon Inge vs. NYY AJ Burnett (.444, 4-for-9, 1 HR, 3 RBI).

July 18: DET Edwin Jackson vs. NYY Johnny Damon (.136, 3-for-22, 0 XBH).

July 19: NYY Nick Swisher vs. DET Justin Verlander (.171 , 6-for-35, 11 K).

For comments or questions, contact us at: JohnnyAndRudy@Gmail.com.

American League Rotation Rankings (Week 14)

1. Seattle Mariners (28-25, 3.78)

Felix Hernandez and Jarrod Washburn comprise the most unhittable AL duo, allowing just 196 hits in 230 innings. No team has notched more than four earned runs off either pitcher since May 19, unfortunately for Washburn, he'll be watching the All-Star game from home.

He can thank Seattle's toothless offense for limiting his win total to five.

Previous Rank: (2)

2. Detroit Tigers (34-29, 4.16)

Edwin Jackson tops baseball with a .212 batting average against. Keeping pace with his remarkable beginning, Jackson's control is no longer the major issue it was in Tampa.

Co-ace Justin Verlander has cooled, but still sits near the top of many statistical categories. He leads the AL with 141 strikeouts.

Previously Ranked: (1)

3. Chicago White Sox (33-30, 4.18)

Mark Buerhle, the AL starter in the 2005 All-Star game, brings a 9-2 record to this year's exhibition, his fourth appearance overall.

John Danks and Gavin Floyd have teamed with Buerhle to lead Chicago's charge up the standings. In June, Danks limited batters to a .190 batting average, while Floyd posted a 1.28 earned run average in 42.1 innings.

Previously ranked: (7)

4. Kansas City Royals (29-39, 4.29)

So impressive is Zach Greinke, most predict he'll beat out Roy Halladay to become the first Kansas City pitcher to start the All-Star game since Bret Saberhagen in 1987.

Beyond Greinke and the impressive Brian Bannister, ineffective cast-offs round out the slightly above mediocre rotation. Recent newcomer Bruce Chen has given up at least one homer in each of his first three games.

Previous Rank: (4)

5. Boston Red Sox (39-24, 4.46)

Ageless Tim Wakefield refuses to lose tight games in a Boston uniform—three of his last four wins have come in one-run games.

The streaking Jon Lester hasn't allowed more than three earned runs since May 26 and Josh Beckett has won six of his past eight.

Signs of a deep playoff run are evident in Beantown.

Previous Rank (12)

6. Toronto Blue Jays (34-28, 4.40)

Blue Jay starters rank second to Boston in strikeouts with 419. Leader Halladay has produced an out of this world strikeout-to-walk ratio (106 strikeouts to 17 bases on balls). Though not the most gifted in the league, Toronto's rotation largely avoids the free pass in times of duress.

Emerging Rookie of the Year candidate Ricky Romero continues pitching deep into games, reaching at least the seventh inning in seven straight.

Previous Rank (5)

7. Texas Rangers (35-27, 4.45)

Closing in on the All-Star break, Texas' starters rank sixth in earned run average but failed to produce an All-Star.

Snubbed Kevin Millwood returned to Atlanta form with a 3.34 earned run average in 124 innings and Scott Feldman has taken the mound in the seventh in all but three of his 15 starts.

In the absence of injured Matt Harrison, rookie Tommy Hunter has pitched well in three of four schedulings (1-1, 23 IP, 21 H, 2.35 ERA).

Previous Rank (6)

8. Tampa Bay Rays (33-32, 4.56)

In North Pole/South Pole fashion, Tampa's rotation is a tale of extremes in 2009.

James Shields, Matt Garza, and Jeff Niemann have excelled, while veterans Scott Kazmir and Andy Sonnanstine wallow in mediocrity.

Failing to live up to the high standards he set last postseason, David Price might soon find himself back in Triple-A Durham to rediscover his "real deal" attributes. Price hopes to build off his six-inning gem against Toronto, but has yet to produce strong back-to-back starts.

Previous Rank (11)

9. Oakland Athletics (25-36, 4.43)

Quick! Name one member of Oakland's staff not named Dallas Braden. Having trouble?

Braden appears to be the last healthy rotational piece still circling Billy Beane's track. Josh Outman, impressive through his first 12 starts, won't be available again until after next year's All-Star game due to Tommy John surgery. The pitching cupboard is nearing bare in Athletictown.

Previous Rank: (9)

10. New York Yankees (32-24, 4.74)

General Manager Brian Cashman brought CC Sabathia to New York because of his ability to guide a team into the late innings and that's exactly what he has done. In all but one injury-riddled start, Sabathia has reached the 96-pitch mark.

Even when he's not at his finest, which isn't often, he provides unquestionable leadership and puts the Yankees on his back.

The same can not be said about Chien-Ming Wang. A bum shoulder will keep the highly ineffective Wang out until after the All-Star break.

Previous Rank (8)

11. Minnesota Twins (35-31, 4.60)

There may not be a better bargain in the AL than Nick Blackburn this year. For $445,000, Minnesota has received eight wins, three complete games, and a 3.06 earned run average in 18 starts. Blackburn gives the bullpen a Sabbath Day every five days instead of seven.

Beyond him, Francisco Liriano, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, and Glen Perkins have all ferociously battled inconsistency and remain unable to quell what ails them.

Previous Rank (10)

12. Los Angeles Angels (34-23, 4.67)

Crashing back down to earth came Joe Saunders the past three starts. Whether it's a road bump or a permanent detour, Saunders surrendered seven long balls during the stretch and watched his earned run average climb from 3.66 to 4.65.

Luckily for the Halos, Jered Weaver has not fallen off the map as briskly as Saunders.

Previous Rank: (3)

13. Baltimore Orioles (22-35, 5.36)

Brad Bergesen burst upon the scene last year at Double-A Bowie. His 15-6 campaign, combined with a faltering Baltimore staff, provided Bergesen an opportunity to step in this year—a chance he has not squandered.

Beyond his 3.59 earned run average lies just one other potential bright spot in the O's rotation. David Hernandez has kept Baltimore close in four of the five games he started, a feat no other starter can match.

Previous Rank (13)

14. Cleveland Indians (22-36, 5.51)

Who gives up more hits in the AL than Cleveland? No one.

Firmly planted at the bottom of the league, Cleveland's staff spots hitters a .294 batting average, 11 points higher than second-to-last Baltimore.

2008 Cy Young winner, turned unluckiest pitcher in baseball, Cliff Lee, ranks 12th in earned run average (3.47), but is tied with the Twins' Liriano and the Royals' Gil Meche for most losses (9).

Maybe Lake Erie will swallow Progressive Field in flames the next time a blaze erupts.

Previous Rank (14)

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Are Placido Polanco's Days Numbered?

Welcome to Rudy Dominick and Johnny Lawrence's Week 14 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis. Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers.

Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On

Casey Crosby, Starting Pitcher—West Michigan Whitecaps (A)

(Last Three Starts)

3-0, 15.2 IP, 7 H, 13 K, 0.58 ERA.

Drive-By Argument: Which Position Player is Most Deserving of an All-Star Slot?

DOMINICK: Curtis Granderson will make his long-awaited first All-Star appearance after a tremendous first half.

Upon winning the Final Vote showdown, Brandon Inge ranks ninth in homers (19) and 12th in RBI (54) in the American League. Tied with David Wright for the most ESPN "Web Gems," which highlights the day's most astonishing defensive plays, he is not just an offensive force on the diamond.

While both Granderson and Inge are worthy, neither is the cornerstone of the Tigers' organization.

Future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera was excluded from the All-Star team, despite having better numbers than Boston's Kevin Youkilis. He racked up 26 more hits, two more homers, 18 fewer strikeouts, and an average 24 points higher, but Youk was chosen by AL manager Joe Maddon.

His power is sorely needed on the Tigers with the declines of aging veterans Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen.

If one of the three All-Star worthy position players were to leave Detroit, Cabrera's presence would be missed the most.

Granderson and Inge are crucial to Detroit's success, but neither possess the offensive capabilities of Cabrera.

LAWRENCE: While Cabrera composed premium numbers, so did three other AL first basemen.

Mark Teixeira, Justin Morneau, and Kevin Youkilis experienced fruitful half-campaigns, limiting the need for another first sacker on the roster. Cabrera's numbers simply were not unique enough to stand out.

Brandon Inge deserves the start at third base almost as much as fan selection Evan Longoria. His hefty contributions at a largely non-productive AL position have anchored the first-place Tigers through 84 games.

He ranks highly among AL third basemen with 48 runs (second), 19 homers (first), 54 runs batted in (second), 35 walks (T-second), and 161 assists (first).

Amongst their peers, neither Cabrera nor Granderson stack up this highly in the field or at the plate.

To Shed Or Not To Shed? Analyzing Placido Polanco

Second base has not been a position of concern since 2005, when the Tigers sent now-imprisoned closer Ugueth Urbina to Philadelphia in exchange for Polanco.

In four seasons, Polanco supplied Detroit with an All-Star-caliber presence on and off the field.

Underappreciated nationally, his list of achievements is as impressive as any second baseman over the past four years. It includes, but is not limited to: a Gold Glove Award, a Silver Slugger Award, an All-Star and World Series appearance, and one errorless season.

But how much remains in the 33-year-old's tank?

Detroit sits in an undesirable position with Polanco who is eligible for free agency after the season.

His accomplishments are nothing short of spectacular, but Detroit can ill afford to hang onto its non-productive 2006 heroes at the expense of the team's future. Not to say Polanco is not still effective, but the recent disposal of veterans for youth has left the Tigers sitting in first place a majority of the season thus far.

Detroit made tough calls to cut loose several veterans whose Tiger careers will be etched into Detroit’s history: Pudge Rodriguez, Kenny Rogers, Todd Jones, and Gary Sheffield.

It may be time to take Polanco’s Tiger stripes away, too, but age is not the sole factor like those listed above.

If general manager Dave Dombrowski can reel in pitching or offensive help for Polanco before the July 31 trade deadline, they could audition hotshot youngster Scott Sizemore at the position.

Sizemore, coined Detroit's future second baseman, has scorched the ball at both Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo this year. In 78 games, the prospect is batting .305 with 11 homers and 10 steals—his on-base percentage also nears .400.

His performance can help solve Detroit's long-term second base puzzle.

In the meantime, if Sizemore shows he needs more time to develop in the minors post-Polanco, Ramon Santiago could man second.

Either way you dissect it, Polanco appears to be expendable.

Much to the knowledge of Tiger fans, under-performing and highly-paid veterans Sheffield and Ordonez will swallow between $25-$32 million of this season's cap space.

In Polanco’s case, he may produce for another few years, but these two have taught Dombrowski it is better to part ways with a player a year too early than a year too late.

Favorable Matchups

July 10: DET Brandon Inge vs. CLE Cliff Lee (.389, 14-for-36, 3 HR, 8 RBI).

July 10: DET Edwin Jackson vs. CLE Batters (2.43, 33.1 IP, 29 K, .252 BAA).

July 11: CLE Asdrubal Cabrera vs. DET Armando Galarraga (.071, 1-for-14, 5 K).

Erie Sends Five to Eastern League All-Star Game

Despite the assertion that Detroit's minor league system is talent deficient, the future is looking bright in Double-A Erie.

Five SeaWolves were elected to play in the Eastern League All-Star game on July 15, suggesting the cupboard is not bare.

Catcher Alex Avila, first baseman Ryan Strieby, outfielders Brennan Boesch and Deik Scram, and right-handed relief pitcher Josh Rainwater will suit up for the 24-man Southern Division squad.

Former University of Alabama star, Avila, has experienced success both offensively and defensively in his first season in Double-A. Avila boasts a .396 on-base percentage, with 69 hits and 39 bases on balls. He has even shown a little pop in his bat knocking seven homers over the fence.

Behind the plate, he has exhibited a defensive prowess worthy of top prospect talk. Through 67 games, he has a .995 fielding percentage, gunning out 45 percent of potential base stealers.

Strieby and Boesch, perhaps two of the most deserving team MVP-candidates, place high in the E.L. in many significant categories.

Strieby has fought back from wrist problems in June to rank third in homers (15), fourth in slugging percentage (.551), and is tied with Boesch for fifth in runs with 54. Boesch sits at second in the league in homers (17) and third in total bases at 159.

At .279, Scram showed over the first half he could hit anywhere in the order. Slotted everywhere from first to eighth, his power and speed have been integral to the SeaWolves 45-38 record. Scram is tied with Boesch for the team-lead in triples with five.

Rounding out SeaWolves honorees, Rainwater made the transition from starter to reliever during Spring Training. Unfazed by the transition, he developed into a go-to-guy in the late innings before receiving a promotion to Triple-A Toledo. At Erie, he posted a 2.59 earned run average in 41.2 innings.

Detroit is well represented in this year's Eastern League Summer Showdown and hopefully Tiger fans will keep tabs on these rising prospects.

The game will take place in Trenton, New Jersey, Double-A home of the New York Yankees.

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Deadline Deals and Does Still Magglio Fit?

Welcome to Rudy Dominick & Johnny Lawrence's Week 13 installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis.

Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers. Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On

Robbie Weinhardt, Relief Pitcher—Erie Sea Wolves (AA)

(Season @ Single-A Lakeland)

1-0, 31.2 IP, 24 H, 30 K, 0.85 ERA.

Drive-By Argument: What is Detroit's No. 1 Priority Come Trading Deadline?

LAWRENCE: At the top of the Tigers' list should be a speedy outfielder to replace soon-to-be-chopped Magglio Ordonez.

Outside of Josh Anderson, who manager Jim Leyland refuses to play, there is no true speed merchant pedaling around the bases for the Tigers. Curtis Granderson has excellent wheels, but they are underutilized because of his equally impressive power.

Another burner would give Detroit a Tampa Rays-type feel to the offense—a bunting threat who could manufacture runs and steal bases. With a more diversified offense, the Tigers would have the capability of stealing or slugging their way home.

Unlike with power, speed never goes into a slump and Detroit could handcuff the opposing defense with a longer list of threats.

DOMINICK: Simply put, pitching wins championships.

With Detroit's rotation instability, the fourth and fifth starting spots need to be addressed immediately. Detroit can not rely on Galarraga, Robertson, and Willis to provide any stability for the second half. A trade needs to be made.

The lack of prospects and high salaries of underproducing veterans Ordonez and Carlos Guillen throw a wrench into the gears.

One way around this scenario is to trade Polanco and promote Scott Sizemore or give Ramon Santiago a chance to play everyday. Detroit may be able to reel in a quality pitcher for the veteran .303 hitter.

Since this isn't the National League, I do not view the speed issue as a pressing matter.

Detroit could use another power bat to protect Miguel Cabrera, but this need is not as desperate as solidifying the staff. Besides, the return of Marcus Thames has already provided dividends. Inserting Adam Dunn would not be much of an upgrade; it seems he's feast or famine in the home run/strikeout department.

A Right Field Dilemma

Discounting the San Diego Padres, Detroit right fielders have been the least productive in all of baseball.

Through 78 Games: .223 BA, 66-for-296, 7 HR, 29 RBI, .296 OBP, .328 SLG.

In each of the above categories, Tiger players rank anywhere from 28th to last among the 30 Major League teams. Not listed in the grouping, they rank last in doubles (8) and second-to-last in total bases (97).

How much longer can Detroit continue to trot out Ordonez? The primary right fielder and fan favorite's numbers have dropped to career lows on all fronts. Hitting at a .260 clip with three measly homers, the lack of production from the position is costing the team wins.

Sitting atop the AL Central, Detroit can ill afford to give games away.

Maggs will trigger an $18-million two-year extension if he plays 135 games or reaches 540 at-bats. A recent four-game benching notified Tiger fans that management would not stand idle.

With the postseason in their sights, Detroit simply can not pay one declining player the salary of three or four productive players while the rotation and bullpen are laced with questions.

Ordonez received half the season to work out his kinks, but he has continued to regress.

The 2006 hero will forever be remembered for his homer off former A's closer Huston Street that launched the Tigers into the World Series. He followed this miracle performance with an MVP-type campaign in 2007 when he batted .363 with 28 homers and 139 runs batted in.

But the White Sox and Twins are closing in, and a sense of urgency hangs over this valued spot.

His range in the field is non-existent, while his arm leaves much to be desired. If his bat is only half of what it used to be, General Manager Dave Dombrowski may be forced to trade or release Ordonez. In-house options Josh Anderson, Ryan Raburn, Marcus Thames, and Clete Thomas lay in waiting until a decision is made.

If Detroit prefers adding new blood to the roster, names such as Matt Holliday, Ryan Spilborghs, Josh Willingham come to mind. Recent rumors suggest Holliday may head to St Louis for Ryan Ludwick and others, but he would be a welcomed addition to a revamped Tiger outfield. Unfortunately for Dombrowski, Oakland would ask for a king's ransom in return.

Whether or not the Tigers decide to pursue other options, few will support holding onto an $18-million bag for a heavy-footed singles hitter.

Favorable Matchups

July 3-5: DET Magglio Ordonez vs. MIN Pitching (.325, 198-for-610, 34 HR, 124 RBI).

July 3-5: DET Fernando Rodney vs. MIN Michael Cuddyer (.091, 1-for-11, 0 HR, 4 K).

July 5: DET Rick Porcello vs. MIN Batting (0.00, 7 IP, 4 H, 3 K).

Detroit Tigers Dissector: Alfredo Figaro and an Outfield Debate

Welcome to Rudy Dominick & Johnny Lawrence's seventh weekly installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis.

Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers. Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On

Thad Weber, Starting Pitcher—Lakeland Flying Tigers (A)

(June 11—June 18)

1-1, 16 IP, 11 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 1.12 ERA.

Drive-By Argument: With Nine Major League-Caliber OF's, Which Three Should Start? Who Should Hit the Trading Block?

(Josh Anderson, Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen, Jeff Larish, Magglio Ordonez, Ryan Raburn, Wilkin Ramirez, Marcus Thames, and Clete Thomas)

DOMINICK: Anderson (LF), Granderson (CF), Ramirez (RF).

Anderson is tied for a team-best 10 stolen bases and has a .293 career batting average, Granderson's inclusion is a no-brainer, and Ramirez is posting hard-to-ignore numbers at Triple-A Toledo—.272, 6 HR, 17 RBI, 20 SB.

Sure it may resemble an outfield built for the National League, but the object is to put the best players on the field.

As the old saying goes, "speed never goes into a slump." Remove the legless from the field and let the youth take over and play some defense.

To keep some sort of power outlet plugged in, I'd slot Thames in at designated hitter.

My trade block would include Ordonez, Guillen and Raburn.

Guillen and Ordonez are two aging veterans that have fallen noticeably short of their hefty contractual expectations. If the Tigers feel they could get something in return for either, don't be surprised if they pull the trigger on these heroes of 2006.

LAWRENCE: Anderson/Thames (LF), Granderson (CF), Raburn/Anderson (RF).

I agree with your wishes to slim down the outfield, but I differ with who to trot out there at the moment.

Switching Magglio Ordonez from right field to designated hitter will keep a contact hitter in the lineup, while giving the mobile Raburn a chance to showcase his trade value in right. Let's show the Mets or Cardinals they can afford coughing up a reliever for this utilityman.

A short-term platoon system in would work to the Tigers advantage. Without Raburn in the lineup, you can insert a burner (Anderson) and a thumper (Thames). Right now, neither are streaking, but in due time their contributions should stay consistent enough to keep the Tigers competitive.

It's clear Ramirez still needs more time to work on his offensive skills—a .272 average and 56 strikeouts in 184 Mud Hen at-bats doesn't translate well. Let Ramirez continue to develop everyday in the minors while those with trade stock man the outfield.

Concerning the trading block, I'd be open to sending anyone not named Curtis Granderson out of town.

Take A Seat Dontrelle, Saturday Belongs To Alfredo Figaro

Fresh off an Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honor, Figaro's next start will come in a Tigers uniform.

He will take the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, replacing the troubled Willis who was placed on the disabled list with an anxiety disorder for the second time this season.

The 24-year-old Figaro looks to douse the Tigers' end-of-the-rotation flames. In his previous two appearances, he whiffed 18 batters in 14.1 innings (2-0, 2.51 ERA).

Perhaps his most appreciated quality in management's eyes is his tendency to attack hitters. Figaro pounds the strike zone with ferocity. He has walked just 16 in 62.1 innings this year, two fewer than Willis issued in three games prior to his demotion (11 innings).

Though the shifting of Willis was necessary and anticipated, the move came as a surprise to some.

Around Detroit, speculation suggested the next in line to join the staff would be Luke French from Triple-A Toledo, a lefty who tossed three scoreless innings for Detroit in mid-May. The glaring desire for a southpaw remained evident in the clubhouse, but ultimately the right-handed Figaro was given the nod.

Barring a remarkable showing, the Dominican is not expected to stick with the big league club for long.

Favorable Matchups

June 19-21: DET Justin Verlander vs. PIT Frank Catalanotto (.100, 1-for-10, 2 K).

June 19-21: DET Pitching vs. MIL Prince Fielder (.404, 4-for-20, 8 K).

June 19-21: DET Batting vs. MIL Braden Looper (6.89, 15.2 IP, 20 H, 5 HR).

William Gholston and Mylan Hicks Commit to Michigan State

William Gholston, Michigan's consensus No. 1 high school player in the 2010 class, committed to Michigan State Monday night.

Word spread like fire after the announcement was discovered on the Detroit Southeastern student's Facebook page.

SpartanMag.com contacted Gholston this morning and received confirmation that he had indeed selected the Spartans over a host of football powers like Alabama, Florida, Louisiana State, Miami-Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Southern California, Tennessee, and in-state rival Michigan.

Gholston, a defensive end out of the increasingly "greener" Detroit Public School League, became the third Spartan commit from the high school conference.

Hours prior, MSU received a verbal dedication from Mylan Hicks, a cornerback from Detroit Renaissance.

According to Rivals.com, William Gholston ranks the 47th best prospect in the nation and seventh at strongside defensive end, while Mylan Hicks ranks 31st nationally at cornerback.

Classified as a defensive end on Rivals, coaches Dan Enos and Ted Gill recruited Gholston as a linebacker. He will likely perform the same role as Julian Peterson did during his two years in East Lansing, splitting time at defensive end and linebacker.

The cousin of the sixth overall draft pick in the 2008 NFL draft, Vernon Gholston, is projected by many as the best defensive prospect to come out of Michigan since Lamar Woodley in 2003.

Hicks selected the Spartans over a host of other schools, including Michigan, Missouri, Purdue and Wisconsin. MSU will need to replace five graduating players in the secondary and Hicks should see early playing time.

Head coach Mark Dantonio's success in Detroit's PSL is a welcomed change from the reign of former coach John L. Smith, who routinely avoided dipping into Detroit's talent pool.

Gholston and Hicks join MSU commits Max Bullough, the nationally third-rated inside linebacker from Traverse City, and athlete Tony Lippett from Detroit Crockett.

Detroit Tigers Dissector: No. 1 Draft Pick Jacob Turner

Welcome to Rudy Dominick & Johnny Lawrence's sixth weekly installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis.

Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers. Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On

Zach Simons, Relief Pitcher—Erie Seawolves (AA)

(Last 10 Games)

1-1, 18.2 IP, 7 H, 9 BB, 18 K, 0.96 ERA.

Drive-By Argument: Should Detroit Have Drafted A Left-Handed Pitcher Instead Of RHP Justin Turner?

LAWRENCE: General Manager Dave Dombrowski selected Missouri high school right-hander Jacob Turner with the ninth-overall pick.

The Tigers' recent draft philosophy states to snag high-ceiling power arms in the early rounds. This injection of flamethrowers into the organization has effectively transformed the look of the staff.

But the lack of quality lefties creates a diversification issue. Detroit began 2009 with an all right-handed rotation.

Since 2002, Andrew Miller has been the only left-handed pitcher selected by Detroit within the first three rounds. Miller's greatest value remains what he reeled in (Miguel Cabrera) and the need for southpaws is more pressing than ever, especially if Dontrelle Willis and Bobby Seay continue to fade.

With such a high draft slot, the Tigers should have passed on Turner to pick one of the four lefty pitchers taken in Round One.

DOMINICK: Jacob Turner fits the mold of Detroit Tiger pitchers. At 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, his stature and high velocity resembles current hurlers Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello, and Ryan Perry.

Dombrowski appropriately based his selection upon talent, not throwing hand. While starting left-handed pitchers are desired, Casey Crosby lurks in the minors with a major league roster spot in his sights. Crosby, 20, currently pitches for West Michigan (A) and through 47.2 innings, here's his stat line: 4-0, 2.83 ERA, and 56 strikeouts.

Beyond Turner and Crosby, Detroit added lefties Andrew Oliver in Round Two and Austin Wood in Round Five, so they did not ignore the issue.

Dombrowski's successful strategy has been to pick the best pitcher available, and according to 11-year MLB veteran Todd Worrell, Turner's high school pitching coach, Turner is the “complete package.”

Prospects are unknown commodities until proven on a major league level; Detroit should go with the player they feel possesses the most potential.

Jacob Turner: Detroit's Next Successful Fireballer?

At age 15, first-round pick Jacob Turner had already hit 92 mph on the radar gun.

By 18, he compiled a 23-5 high school record, threw a one-hit, eighteen strikeout gem, and earned a spot on the United States under-18 team.

Baseball America considered him the top high school right-hander before the draft and he has benefited from the guidance of three former MLB players, Andy Benes, Mike Matheny, and Todd Worrell.

Flipping the page to adulthood, Turner received a baseball scholarship from University of North Carolina before Detroit selected him No. 9 overall.

The physically-gifted hurler out of Westminster Christian Academy in Missouri credits his arm strength to his avoidance of breaking balls in high school. "I'd never heard anything good come out of throwing a curve (too young)," he said. "I think it's paid off."

Each year, the velocity on his fastball picked up some sizzle, ascending from 90 mph as a sophomore, to 93 mph as a junior, and up to 96 mph as a senior.

Recently, he has added a changeup and curveball to his repertoire that are at times considered plus pitches. Turner also grew an inch last year, so his physical growth may not be finished.

Vice President of Amateur Scouting, David Chadd, believes the young hurler fits the Detroit Tiger bill, "We have a profile in this organization and a philosophy, and Jacob certainly meets that profile."

As noted in our Drive-By Argument, Turner's physical makeup shares a likeness with Verlander, Porcello, and Perry. Similar poise, control, and physical conditioning place his expectations somewhere in between these three.

Finishing the season with 113 strikeouts, 13 walks and a 0.60 ERA in 58.1 innings, Turner is not far from where the aforementioned stood rising from the amateur ranks.

Adviser Scott Boras stands as the only barrier between Turner and Detroit. He reportedly wants the Tigers to match the MLB record $7-million guarantee given to a high school pitcher (Rick Porcello, 2007).

Fortunately, the Tigers were informed of his demands prior to the draft—all signs point to Turner's world-class arm joining the organization at some point this summer.

Favorable Matchups

June 13: DET Miguel Cabrera vs. PIT Zach Duke (.556, 5-for-9, 4 2B).

June 12-14: DET Magglio Ordonez vs. PIT Pitching (.404, 18-for-44, 5 K).

June 12-14: DET Gerald Laird vs. PIT Pitching (.375, 3-for-8, 1 HR).

Detroit Tigers Dissector: The Great Bat Freeze

Welcome to Rudy Dominick & Johnny Lawrence's fifth weekly installment of Detroit Tigers information and analysis.

Each Thursday, we will delve into all things Tigers. Read and digest, or skim and spit out our insightful banter.

Keep An Eye On

Don Kelly, Center Field—Toledo (AAA)

(May 27 —June 2)

.468 BA, 15-for-32, 5 2B, 6 RBI

Drive-By Argument: Can Detroit's Rotation Keep It Up?

DOMINICK: Justin Verlander reclaimed the term "ace" after his mediocre 2008 season. Reverting back to his old self, he is 6-2 and leads the AL with 90 strikeouts thus far, while holding hitters to a .154 batting average at Comerica Park.

Beyond Verlander, Edwin Jackson has been electric, finally blossoming to his full potential with a 2.30 ERA in 74.1 innings.

Rick Porcello is charging toward stardom, despite a rough last start against Boston. And Armando Galarraga was the most consistent Tiger pitcher last season and early in 2009, gathering 16 total wins.

Eventually, Jeremy Bonderman will sneak into the middle or bottom of the rotation, weeding out whomever management decides is the weakest link.

Detroit only lacks a solid left-handed starter, but may possess one in Dontrelle Willis.

Leading baseball with seven shutouts, they'll continue their strong performance throughout the year, remaining one of baseball's top staffs.

LAWRENCE: While we have all enjoyed the unexpected success of Tiger starters, it's inconceivable to expect the ecstasy to linger all year.

Pitching dominance of 2006 proportions doesn't come along very often without numerous big names on the roster.

The only legit star in the rotation is Verlander, as the rest are unproven with shaky track records.

While I think Tiger pitchers are maturing, Porcello and Jackson have never shown over the course of 162 games they can keep it together at the Major League level. Also, Porcello will have a 150-inning curfew, thrusting someone else into the rotation.

Galarraga stood out in 2008, but appears to have lost his movement in his last four starts (29.1 innings and 28 earned runs).

And Bonderman, who has just one start under his belt in Single-A West Michigan, has a career ERA closer to five than four (4.74). The combined career ERA of Detroit's rotation, excluding Willis, is 4.62.

Quite sandy ground to build a fortress on.

Where Have The Bats Gone?

Remember that AL Central team who recorded at least eight hits the first 15 games of the season?

Yeah, we don't either.

Tiger bats flew to the Arctic two weeks ago and still have not booked their return flight to Metropolitan Airport.

In just two of their last 16 games have they scored more than five runs, something they accomplished 14 times in 36 tries before the dry spell.

The slump exposes their desperation for tablesetters.

Unbeknownst to many, their batting averages in slots one, two, and three in the order place 20th, 23rd, and 22nd, respectively, (.250, .250, and .261).

Big bats in the middle of the lineup thirst for runners to send home.

Perhaps it's great timing on behalf of Detroit's offense to go cold weeks before the June 9 amateur draft. The Tigers need a surefire top-of-the-lineup guy and possess the ninth overall pick to secure one if desired.

The glaring lack of organizational depth on the left side of the infield may lure Detroit away from selecting a pitcher to grab a high-level positional prospect.

Favorable Matchups

June 5-7: LAA Howie Kendrick vs. DET (.083 BA, 3-for-36, 9 K).

June 5-7: LAA Mike Napoli vs. DET (.179 BA, 7-for-39, 0 2B).

June 5-7: DET Curtis Granderson vs. LAA (.338 BA, 44-for-130, 10 HR).

American League Rotation Rankings (Week 8)

1. Detroit Tigers (23-16, 3.84)

Justin Verlander, Rick Porcello, and Edwin Jackson formed the best May threesome in baseball. With a combined 14-2 record, their stat line indicated their utter domination: 113.2 IP, 82 H, 112 K, 1.82 ERA.

Verlander and Porcello became the first Tiger tandem to go 5-0 in a month since Brian Moehler and Steve Sparks in 2000. Verlander leads the AL with a 11.68 K/9 ratio.

Previously Ranked: (2)

2. Seattle Mariners (15-18, 4.06)

Though 26-year-old Justin Vargas has given up a long ball in each of his four starts, he has only given up five earned runs in 27.1 innings (1.65 ERA).

The M's Big Three have stomped the pedal to the floor after a few rough outings, extending their April dominance. An anemic offense, unfortunately, has stolen multiple victories from Felix Hernandez, Eric Bedard, and Jarrod Washburn.

Previous Rank: (6)

3. Los Angeles Angels (19-12, 4.12)

Through 10 starts, Joe Saunders handcuffed the AL similar to how Scott Howard shut down the Dragons in Teen Wolf, ugly and unapologetic.

Jered Weaver has pulverized hitters into bits with a devastating slider and four-seam fastball. Saunders and Weaver hope to continue their run of eminence against Toronto and Detroit this week, as John Lackey hopes to round into form in his third appearance off the disabled list.

Previous Rank: (1)

4. Kansas City Royals (17-19, 4.04)

Zach Greinke has continued to produce eye-popping numbers. Yet to surrender a homer, he ranks first overall in wins (8), strikeouts (93), and earned run average (1.10).

Behind their stud, Brian Bannister and Gil Meche have struggled with consistency, while Kyle Davies and Luke Hochevar have been atrocious. Baseball's top draft pick in 2006, Hochevar, had impressed at Triple-AAA Omaha with a 1.17 ERA in seven starts, but has floundered thus far through three with the big club (.347 batting average against).

Previous Rank: (2)

5. Toronto Blue Jays (21-17, 4.26)

Questions of experience and health lie beyond Toronto horse Roy Halladay. Without the Cy Young candidate, Blue Jay starters post a mediocre 4.70 ERA and 13-16 record.

Brian Tallett has shown tremendous upside with a 3.00 ERA and 30 punchouts in 39 May innings.

Previous Rank (4)

6. Texas Rangers (21-14, 4.34)

Scott Feldman has emerged as a force in the Rangers' rotation. Still working with a "0" in the loss column, he has not allowed more than three runs in his seven starts.

Brandon McCarthy tossed a shutout against Houston on May 24 and is beginning to consistently show the flash many in the White Sox organization predicted. If McCarthy harnesses his control, he will be fit to lead the staff along with Kevin Milwood.

Previous Rank (5)

7. Chicago White Sox (18-18, 4.56)

The biggest movers in this most recent Rotation Rankings, Chicago hurlers have improved their ERA by almost eighty points.

Clayton Richard has created a stir since replacing the ineffective Jose Contreras. In his past 20 innings, Richard has yielded just 13 hits with a 1.34 ERA. Looking past the 25-year-old, Mark Buerhle may appear in his fourth All-Star game if he continues to limit opponents to a .298 on-base percentage.

Fortunes have reversed on the South Side.

Previous Rank (12)

8. New York Yankees (19-12, 4.78)

Despite upper-management babying, Joba Chamberlain has managed to stay on the mound long enough to establish himself in an adult league. Manager Joe Girardi received permission from his watcher-overs to let Chamberlain pitch until the ninth inning on Monday, as he sent down Indian after Indian using 105 pitches.

Also shaping up nicely is CC Sabathia. Almost New York's early season goat, the University of Hawai'i football decommit has barreled through at least seven innings each of his last five starts. Things are unmistakably trending up in the Yankee rotation.

Previous Rank (10)

9. Oakland Athletics (11-20, 4.75)

The reliable Dallas Braden entered his last start at the bottom of the league in run support, getting 2.67 runs per nine innings. Despite this, he has emerged as the only legitimate piece of the Athletics' rotation and few realize his ERA is on par with the likes of Justin Verlander (3.63).

On May 5, Dana Eveland was finally demoted after a horrendous few weeks and youngster Brett Anderson has watched more balls fly over the fence than games he has pitched. Oakland fans look to be in for a long summer when Braden is not on the bump.

Previous Rank: (7)

10. Minnesota Twins (19-20, 4.95)

The story Francisco Liriano's drought sparked headlines across baseball, soliciting the question "should he be shifted to the bullpen?" Johan Santana-like in talent, but Adam Eaton-like in production, a reduced role may be waiting in the wings for the scuffling Dominican (2-7, 6.60 ERA).

Unexpected contributor Anthony Swarzak has breathed fresh air into the Twins' embattled rotation through two quality starts, but management expected little from Swarzak this season. Nick Blackburn and Kevin Slowey need to continue their progress if Minnesota even wants a sniff at the playoffs.

Previous Rank (8)

11. Tampa Bay Rays (20-21, 5.00)

Tampa recalled All-World lefty David Price on May 24, and in two starts, he has struck out nearly two batters per inning (17 K's in 9IP).

Matt Garza's sudden reappearance in May bolstered the staff many believed was too deep in 2008. The opposition rakes at a measly .205 clip against Garza and he holds lefties to a minuscule .179 average. The Rays will ascend as far as their starters can take them.

Previous Rank (9)

12. Boston Red Sox (22-16, 5.24)

Ace Josh Beckett is beginning to catch up to his $11-million-plus contract. In his past three starts, he has yielded just three runs in 22 innings (1.22 ERA), and through his previous six, he has mowed down at least five batters. Paired with Beckett, Red Sox fans hope Jon Lester's 12 strikeout performance Sunday against Toronto is a sign of things to come.

Through two starts, conversely, Daisuke Matsuzaka has yielded 14 hits and five walks in 10 innings since being pulled off the shelf. Perhaps Dice-K is beginning to really miss Japanese cooking.

Previous Rank (14)

13. Baltimore Orioles (15-20, 5.31)

On par with Cleveland's unreliability, the O's staff lacks a true stud. Baltimore's highest ranked AL ERA-leader, Jeremy Guthrie (38th), cannot seem to establish an identity. From effective to ineffective, he bounces back and forth more than Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter.

The hamstring of Koji Uehara decided to sideline him for a couple weeks, transforming the Baltimore's rotation into a more desperate version of their 2008 counterpart.

Previous Rank (13)

14. Cleveland Indians (12-19, 5.61)

Nine "pitchers" have started games for Cleveland this year, and only Cliff Lee has been able to positively contribute in the AL's worst troop of tossers. Without Lee, the Indians' starting ERA is a shameful 6.53.

After turning to dust in recent weeks, it is all but certain Fausto Carmona looked back at Sodom and Gomorrah—his 6.60 ERA ranks worst among AL qualified starters. Cleveland fans hope the front office will realize Zach Jackson was the quintessential "throw-in" in the Sabathia move.

Previous Rank (11)

D-Train Almost Flawless in Detroit Debut

While most of Detroit's eyes were on the Red Wings-Blackhawks Western Conference Finals game, there was another significant event within a mile of Joe Louis Arena.

A moment many Tiger fans thought they would never see occurred Tuesday night when Dontrelle Willis picked up his first win in a Detroit uniform, shutting out the Texas Rangers through 6-1/3 innings in their 4-0 victory.

In his spectacular Comerica Park debut, he allowed just three runners to reach base. Willis surrendered a hit to Michael Young and walked Andruw Jones in the first inning, but induced a fly ball off the bat of Marlon Byrd to end the threat.

He went on to retire 17 consecutive batters, sending away everyone he faced until he walked Jones in the seventh.

Approximately two hours before the Red Wings beat the Blackhawks in overtime, Willis walked off the field to a standing ovation of nearly 24,000.

He tossed 61 of 100 pitches for strikes, and Willis got ahead of just about every hitter he faced.

Willis used different arm slots, mixing his fastball, curve, sinker, and changeup with precision. He pounded the strike zone with an active fastball registering as high as 93 mph.

Willis combined with four Detroit pitchers to one-hit the American League's third highest-scoring team. Brandon Lyon, Bobby Seay, Joel Zumaya, and Fernando Rodney followed up their starter with a hitless 2-2/3 scoreless to preserve the win.

Reminiscent of his time in Florida, he earned his first victory in the majors since Sept. 25, 2007.

Willis' next start will come on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.

Bon Voyage, Juan Rincon

In a move that surprised no one, Detroit Tigers' veteran relief pitcher Juan Rincon elected to become a free agent over accepting a demotion to Triple-A Toledo.

Detroit loses the right-handed reliever they spent $750,000 to get on January 20.

For the Tigers, he went 1-0 with a 5.23 ERA in 10.1 innings, but was replaced when Dontrelle Willis returned from an anxiety disorder a week ago.

The effectiveness of youngsters Joel Zumaya and Ryan Perry lessened Rincon's standing in Detroit's bullpen.

From 2004 to 2006, Rincon starred for the Minnesota Twins in middle relief, acquiring a 2.66 ERA and 255 strikeouts in 233.1 innings.

American League Rotation Rankings (Week Six)

1. Los Angeles Angels (15-7, 3.83)

Jered Weaver and Joe Saunders pilot this well-balanced, yet injury-riddled rotation. The 26-year-old Weaver has surrendered one run or less in four of seven starts, while Saunders has paralyzed Oakland hitters in 13.1 innings (1.35 ERA) and racked up five wins.

Career minor-leaguer Matt Palmer, once an interchangeable piece, is now locked into a starter's role until he cools down from his 4-0 start. Oh, and 16 game winner Ervin Santana returned May 14th. Not too shabby, Angels.

2. Detroit Tigers (15-11, 3.92)

Arguably Detroit's ace thus far, Edwin Jackson leads the Tigers in ERA, WHIP, and innings pitched. This winter steal represents the second fist of the Tigers one-two punch—Justin Verlander rounds out the electric duo.

Verlander's recent surge has produced 44 strikeout casualties in his last 29.1 innings (0.92 ERA), helping Detroit lead the category in the AL with 180. Add rookie phenom Rick Porcello into the equation, recent winner of his last three games, and you're talking about steam few bats can catch up to.

3. Kansas City Royals (15-14, 3.88)

With Zach Greinke dominating the free world, more people lined up around theaters to see Gigli than predicted the Royals to set the starting pitching standard. Their success likely won't last forever, but the statistics are inexplicably impressive with Brian Bannister back in the mix.

A team 3.63 ERA paces both leagues, as their relievers have been equally superb.

4. Toronto Blue Jays (18-10, 4.20)

The Jays possess one of the AL's most dominant arms in Roy Halladay. Halladay ranks second to Greinke in quality starts with seven, and sits at 8-1 with 57 punchouts.

Behind him lies several talented youngsters, as Brett Cecil has made quite the impact in his first three big league starts (2-0, 1.80, three quality starts). It's safe to say they don't miss overpriced free agent A.J. Burnett.

5. Texas Rangers (17-9, 4.37)

Though statistically mediocre, Texas pitching ranks first in the "Wait, They're Not Giving Up Nine Runs A Game Anymore?" race. Maybe team president Nolan Ryan's pitching philosophy is beginning to sink in.

Ryan recently commented on his team's pitching at The Ballpark in Arlington, "People are saying they can't pitch in this ballpark...they can pitch in this ballpark if you keep the ball down and change speeds and move the ball in and out." Kevin Millwood's resurgence is proof Ryan's philosophy holds legitimacy; he has posted a 2.10 ERA in 30 innings.

6. Seattle Mariners (11-13, 4.49)

While it's not earth-shattering Seattle's staff ranks in the middle, it just goes to show how strong the Big Three have been despite frequent sabotage attempts by Chris Jakubauskas (31.1 IP, 7.47 ERA) and Carlos Silva (28.2 IP, 8.48 ERA).

Felix Hernandez, Eric Bedard, and Jarrod Washburn are each pitching like it's their contract years (It is for Bedard and Washburn). In 140 innings, the Big Three boasts a 3.08 ERA with 129 strikeouts.

7. Oakland Athletics (7-14, 4.78)

Oakland may trot out the best hurlers in mid-to-late innings, but unfortunately their rotation is just plain average. Youngsters Dallas Braden, Trevor Cahill, and Josh Outman have shown competency at times, but their inconsistencies suggest they may need to catch the bus back to Triple-A Sacramento.

It doesn't help that Dana Eveland is offering up first base at an astronomical rate—24.1 innings, 39 hits, 15 walks.

8. Minnesota Twins (12-13, 5.04)

Francisco Liriano and Scott Baker are driving the Twins season into the Mississippi. Staff stability under pitching coach Rick Anderson has sunk to an all-time low, as their supposed top-flight starters are on pace to set new career lows in many categories.

Both struggling back from injury, they will need to right the ship quick before succumbing once again to the disabled list.

9. Tampa Bay Rays (15-16, 5.17)

Each time Andy Sonnanstine takes the mound is a protest to Tampa management that they exported the wrong fifth starter to Detroit (Edwin Jackson). Beyond the failures of Sonnanstine, hitters have been clubbing Scott Kazmir with ferocity. Unable to identify the source of his mechanical issues, the Rays will flounder until his fortune reverses.

10. New York Yankees (11-11, 5.32)

Chien-Meng Wang skewed New York's stats in just six innings when he surrendered 23 earned runs. With Phil Hughes stepping in, the hole still has not been filled. Though he dominated Detroit for six innings in his season debut, his three previous appearances leave much to be desired.

New $82.5 million man A.J. Burnett, who opted out of his Toronto contract, is unsurprisingly not living up to his newest bind, offering up six homers in 31.2 innings. Luckily for the Yankees, Sabathia is starting to pitch like he did with Milwaukee.

11. Cleveland Indians (10-16, 5.49)

Cliff Lee is the sole bright spot in this Major League imitation of a staff. Calls for Carl Pavano's head are coming from all corners of Cleveland and Fausto Carmona has been about as accurate as a paper air plane in gale force winds.

Recent call-up Jeremy Sowers can't be relied upon to turn things around and Anthony Reyes left his arm in St. Louis. Cleveland's rotation is reminiscent of last year's Detroit staff.

12. Chicago White Sox (11-15, 5.42)

What has gotten into Gavin Floyd? In 2008, he led the White Sox to the playoffs when he sealed the play-in game. Scuffling with a 7.71 ERA in nearly 45 innings, fans are beginning to throw around the phrase "one-hit wonder."

Another disappointment, Jose Contreras, has been largely ineffective since 2006. The further Floyd and Contreras drag Chicago down, the tougher it will be for Chicago to jump the Twins, Tigers, and Royals.

13. Baltimore Orioles (10-16, 5.73)

Baltimore's staff wasn't expected to do great things this year. And they're not. Righty Adam Eaton strangely still collects a major league paycheck despite a 6.10 ERA since 2005 (7.93 ERA this year).

Opposing hitters bat a league-high .301 and strike out very seldom against manager Dave Trembley's bunch. Rich Hill's 3-2 victory over the red-hot Royals on Saturday was the first time an Orioles starter surrendered fewer than three runs since May 10.

14. Boston Red Sox (11-12, 5.84)

It appears all season long, the AL's two highest-payrolls will duke it out for the "Who's Rotation Is More Colossally Disappointing?" crown. Another New York versus Boston showdown. It's a tight race, but...ok, I'll stop trying to be cute. Boston's rotation has been downright awful.

Maybe Josh Beckett needs the Cleveland Indians to fly in his ex-girlfriend to sing the national anthem every fifth day. Dice-K should return soon to the most disappointing bunch in baseball.
