BC Lions Finally Sign Draft Pick Jamall Lee

Jamall Lee was selected third overall by the BC Lions in the 2009 CFL Draft. However, he held off on signing opting instead to join the NFL's Carolina Panthers.

Lee was cut following the Panthers training camp and was not offered a chance to join the practice squad after Carolina claimed ex-Packer Tyrell Sutton from waivers.

His speed broke the Evaluation Camp 40-yard dash record with a stunning 4.39.

In four years for the Bishop's Gaiters, Lee ran for 4,296 yard,s making him the Quebec University Football League's all-time leading rusher. Lee's collegiate performance earned him the ability to be the only Canadian to play in the prestigious Texas vs. the Nation game.

Wally Buono, the GM and head coach for the Lions said of the signing, "He has the size, speed, and skill to help us in a number of areas and I look forward to seeing him on the field as a Lion."

Lee's speed and obvious talent should be a great counter to Martell Mallett's 1,127 yard effort this season.

Edmonton Eskimos: Shake-ups Will Help Bring Team Closer to CFL Grey Cup

Edmonton's defense has undergone numerous major changes over the past few days as they acquired defensive back Byron Parker from Toronto and signed defensive back Randee Drew, linebacker Reggie Hunt, and defensive tackle Jerome Haywood.

When you look at it you see aging veterans (Hunt and Haywood), an injury-prone player (Drew) and a player who failed to crack the lineup in Toronto potentially due to him "not learning the playbook" as coach Bart Andrus explained it.

But when you look at it further you see a 6-6 Eskimos team that holds a one-game lead over BC, a two-game lead of, and a three-game lead over Toronto for the fifth out of six teams in the playoffs.

Also, Edmonton has given up the most points in the league, 369 with the next closest being Saskatchewan with 331 and they are adding Hunt, a seven-year CFL veteran, to a linebacking corps who's most experienced player is four-year CFL vet Maurice Lloyd.

Haywood was brought in to replace the injured Dario Romero, yet while Haywood isn't as talented he, just like Romero, has seven-plus years of CFL experience and will likely combine with six-year veteran Kai Ellis in leading a group that contains two two-year veterans and a group of rookies.

Now Parker and Drew, while they are not as experienced (Parker has four years in the league, Drew has two), bring in more talent.

Jason Goss leads the secondary in tackles with 39 and Kelly Malveaux leads them with two interceptions after they failed to get one in seven weeks.

Both Parker and Drew should help in the tackling game with Drew having 86 (67 in 2007) and Parker having 99 (40 in 2008), while Parker has 18 interceptions with a season high of eight in 2006.

Bringing in these four players should in my opinion be able to pass the Roughriders and Calgary Stampeders who are both 7-5.

All they need now is for the the offense to step up from the fourth best (based on points for) in the league.

CFL: Is Mike Kelly Slowly Losing His Mind?

What a season for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

New coach Mike Kelly promptly made moves acquiring QB Stefan LeFors while releasing CB Stanford Samuels, DE Tom Canada, QB Timmy Chang, and QB Kevin Glenn.

The 2009 regular season, on the other hand, started with a bang as star wideout Derick Armstrong and Kelly did battle and Armstrong eventually earning his way out of town.

LeFors struggled so veteran Michael Bishop was brought in.

However, running back Fred Reid has been dominant and rookie linebacker Jonathan Hefney has been a pleasant surprise.

Through 12 games, though, they've struggled to a 4-8 record with LeFors hitting the 9-Game injured list and journeyman Casey Bramlet being brought in.

Don't get me wrong, the season hasn't been a total wash as the above-mentioned Fred Reid has been dominant, while Hefney's been okay, and Jovon Johnson and Ike Charlton have been tackling machines.

Fred Perry and Dorian Smith have also been wreaking havoc in the backfield with five sacks each.

Terrence Edwards leads the receivers in receptions (36), receiving yards (518), and touchdowns (1).

And no, the one touchdown is not the problem for Winnipeg as Fred Reid has six.

But the reason Winnipeg is struggling this year is new head coach Mike Kelly.

Not only was the Armstrong confrontation problematic but so was the most recent one.

This week, Kelly informed team leader Barrin Simpson (who leads the team with 58 tackles) that he'll be on the bench so they can shake things up.

Simpson obviously declined as he's blowing out his stats from last year and could contend with his career high 115 tackles in 2001.

So, Winnipeg responds by placing him on 9-Game injured list since they couldn't find a trading partner.

The issue, not only with the Blue Bombers handling of the situation, is that Simpson did not approve his placement on the injured list.

CFL rules require that a player okays the move before it can happen.

Not only is Winnipeg facing a rules violation and a road trip to Montreal, but they're also facing the dreaded "rebuilding" that plagued Hamilton for years.

Winnipeg fans better be prepared for the day Kelly tells Fred Reid that they decided to go with another player since Kelly and stars clearly clash, which just shows that he's slowly losing his mind by the day.

Amos Allen: A Chip Off the Old Block?

Amos Allen (pictured, far left) graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2007, which was a year after star Stefan Logan left.

After Logan's failed NFL stint with the Miami Dolphins, he headed northwest to the BC Lions. Joining him there was his Pop Warner friend, Amos Allen.

Allen and Logan first met as kids in Miami, Fla., and were both neglected by Division I-A NCAA teams.

Logan went on to go to play at South Dakota, only to have Allen follow him there.

After going undrafted in 2007 and joining the Dolphins practice squad midway through 2007, he joined the BC Lions for 2008.

Allen, on the other hand, also went undrafted, and instead of waiting joined his childhood friend in the Lions backfield.

Logan went on to start for the team, while Allen was cut in training camp.

In 2009, Logan signed on with the Pittsburgh Steelers while Allen tried to follow up Logan's performance and re-joined the BC Lions.

However, for the second straight year, he was cut by the Lions in training camp.

On the other hand, Logan made the Steelers' final roster as a kick returner and debuted last Thursday.

Allen finally made a team, joining the Toronto Argonauts, and debuted on Friday, a season after Logan made his debut.

Logan was the return specialist for the Steelers while Allen shared returning duties with rookie wideout Jason Carter.

Throughout their respective careers, they both got shunned from opportunities and were forced to work for them.

Logan started for the South Dakota Coyotes in 2006, Allen in 2007.

While Logan starred for the Lions in 2008, Allen first played in 2009 and has yet to make a major impact.

However, if Toronto running back Jamal Robertson were to go down, Allen would step in and take all or most of the carries.

If he makes an impact in the return game and in the backfield, don't be surprised to see Allen follow up Logan once again and join an NFL team a special teamer.

CFL: Could Chase Daniel Eventually Follow Graham Harrell's Career Path?

Graham Harrell was a Sammy Baugh Trophy winner, Johnny Unitas Golden Award winner, AT&T All-American Player of the Year, 3-time All-Academic Big 12, and a Heisman Trophy candidate.

Despite, all of this collegiate accolades, Harrell went undrafted out of Texas Tech and received tryout invitations with the Cleveland Browns and then tried out for the UFL.

He went unsigned both times.

Following his UFL tryout, rumors started that Harrell could sign with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.

Those rumors eventually transpired as he signed with the team on July 20 and was immediately placed on the inactive list as he adjusted to the Canadian game.

Harrell has yet to make his debut and the earliest he could is October 2 in a game against the BC Lions in Vancouver.

Chase Daniel on the other hand was a one-time Heisman Trophy candidate (2007), Second-team All-Big 12, Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year, First-team All-Big 12, Second-team All-American, Maxwell Award semifinalist and also a finalist for the Manning Award, Walter Camp Award, Draddy Trophy, and Davey O'Brien Award winner.

Needless to say that's a bit more than Harrell's accolades yet Daniel has faced the same treatment as Harrell has, NFL wise.

Daniel spent the entire training camp with the Washington Redskins before being cut.

After being cut, while the Redskins were assembling their practice squad he was told he'd be added to it.

However, the Redskins opted to go with ex-Kentucky Wildcats quarterback and New York Giant cut (ironically, the Redskins first opponent in 2009) Andre Woodson.

After being shown the door by the Redskins, Daniel has opted to take his show to New Orleans under the mentoring of gun-slinger Drew Brees.

Luckily, for Daniel the New Orleans quarterback situation is less log-jammed down the road as the only backup is almost 40 year-old Mark Brunell.

Now, odds are Daniel will see limited time on the active roster and even less time on the field but a situation that has gone unmentioned in the media is the fact he could decide to go the CFL once his deal with the Saints expires.

As you may or may not know most of the league has little to no backup depth.

It also doesn't hurt that Daniel is a prototypical CFL quarterback (6'1", 219) and has solid arm strength along with time in one of the toughest conferences in the NCAA.

In my opinion, Daniel staying in the NFL in the short term would be a mistake for him down the road, and taking the path blazed by the likes of Warren Moon, Doug Flutie and Graham Harrell makes sense for him and his potential team.

CFL: Is Fred Reid the Next Stefan Logan?

Ex-BC Lions running back Stefan Logan signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers following a 1,366 all-purpose yard season.

The year before the South Dakota product signed with the Miami Dolphins in November 2007 and joined their practice squad. His contract expired after the year and he went unsigned.

Logan then headed north of the border with the BC Lions where he put together a 122 rushing attempts, 889 rushing yard, 52 catch and a 477 receiving yard season.

He added three touchdowns (all receiving) and four fumbles (all while rushing) to his season totals.

Following 2008, he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he's battling for a roster spot as a return specialist.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Fred Reid on the other hand played his college football at Mississippi State, which is no South Dakota but following the draft also went selected.

Just like Logan he bolted for south Florida but headed towards the shore with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005.

He was cut before the season, and didn't play football in 2006.

After star linebacker Barrin Simpson recommended Reid to the Bombers front office guys, they brought him into camp and obviously showed enough to keep a spot on the roster.

As a rookie in 2007 Reid got 40 carries, 270 rushing yards, two touchdowns and eight catches for 120 yards.

Playing in Joe Smith and Charles Roberts's shadow again in 2008, he still managed to get 101 carries and 709 yards with three scores.

Reid added 13 catches for 96 yards to his 2008 totals.

Now, Logan obviously had the better 2008, but Reid is on pace to shatter Logan's 2008 season.

After eight games in 2009, he has 115 rushes (seven less than Logan in a full season) and 795 rushing yards (93 less than Logan in 2008).

Not only are Reid's stats better in three years than Logan in one, they similar in body size.

Reid 5'8", Logan is 5'7" while they're both speedy 185 pound backs.

Because of these similarities, I'd be very surprised to not see Reid get an NFL shot as a kick returner or even a backup running back.

CFL: Plenty Of Running Backs Available For Ottawa's New Team

As a follow-up Steve Thompson's article about possible quarterbacks available for the new Ottawa team in 2010, 2011 or 2012. here's a list of possible running backs who'll be available.

(Kudos to Steve for suggesting this article on my bulletion board.)

Jesse Lumsden, Edmonton Eskimos

Face it, you and me both know the power back out of McMaster is easily one of the most injury prone players in the CFL. However, he has such outstanding talent that the Seattle Seahawks brought him to training camp in 2005.

But back to the injuries. In the three seasons in Hamilton, he always had some kind of injury that caused him to miss some games.

This season, one of the first hits he took all year in the first game, he injured his shoulder. The shoulder injury has caused him to undergo surgery, and he'll miss the rest of the season.

But, let's go back to the talent. With his talent, he'll most likely continue to get chances with teams in the CFL who need a quality running back or better backup.

Lumsden recently turned 27, which means in 2012 he'll be 30 by mid-season which tends to be the start of the downfall for running backs. But, if Ottawa wants to put fans in the seats they'll take a chance on one of very few Canadian running backs.

Kenton Keith, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Coming into this season, Keith was the projected start for the Tiger-Cats, but an injury forced rookie running back DeAndra Cobb into the starting role.

As of today, Cobb has 479 yards on 67 carries and is easily one of the best rookies in the CFL.

Cobb's performance makes Keith expendable and whether the Ottawa team starts next season or one of the following years, Keith could be available for them. (assuming he doesn't leave for another NFL oppurtunity).

Ian Smart, BC Lions

The speedy kick returner was the projected starter when Stefan Logan headed for greener pastures with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but an injury and Martell Mallett's great camp performance ended that hope.

Smart is now on the reserve list waiting for another opportunity.

BC's backup running back Emmanuel Marc has been satisfactory and doesn't seem like he'll lose his job anytime soon.

If something doesn't happen soon, Marc could become available for team Ottawa.

Demetris Summers, Calgary Stampeders

Summers wasn't great last year in Calgary (19 carries, 121 yards, 1 touchdown) and then an injury this year has caused him to miss every game.

Calgary has some running back depth behind star Joffrey Reynolds with Canadian Jon Cornish and import Derek Watson.

Summers is more than expendable and Calgary and their fans probably wouldn't be hard broken to part with him.

Charles Roberts, Free Agent

Probably one of the least likely to be picked up by team Ottawa but the 30 year-old still might be ineligible for "Cash for Clunkers" and could have some gas in the tank.

With his most recent 1,000 yard season coming in 2007 and then getting almost 800 yards with BC and Winnipeg last year, he has shown he can still get the job done to an extent.

If no one else if available for them, I wouldn't be surprised to see Roberts get a look.

Other Names

Joe Smith

Lavarus Giles

Tyler Ebell

An NFL cut

Winnipeg Blue Bombers Add Vikings QB to Negotiation List

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have announced that Minnesota Vikings backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has been added to their negotiation list.

Jackson a Alabama State product, was competing with journeyman quarterback Sage Rosenfels for the starting job before Brett Favre came out off retirement again, and was named starter.

He'll more likely never come up to Canada, just like Vince Young being on the Argos neg. list, but if he becomes a free agent and isn't signed he'll be open to join the Bombers.

Currently, Michael Bishop is starting while Stefan LeFors (who recently took a paycut) is the backup with Bryan Randall third string.

However, the odds of him joining that group is slim with teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars needing a backup.

But, if he does get released and doesn't get signed (you have better chances of winning the lottery than having that happen) then my guess is that LeFors will be given his walking papers, solely because of his awful performance as starter.

2009 All-Fantasy Football Sleeper Team

The first three or four picks of your fantasy football draft can either lead your team to a championship or sink your team to the bottom.

Rounds four and up tend to be veterans, guys you have a gut feeling on, or who you've recently read that they are best thing since David Tyree's catch in the Super Bowl.

Let's talk about the players you have a gut feeling on; these are your sleepers. Sleepers can literally make or break a team and act like the role players on a basketball team.

Here are my selections to be sleepers this year and I know I'll be targeting them in my draft(s).

Kyle Orton, QB, Denver Broncos

Everyone is talking about how big of an impact ex-Denver Broncos' quarterback Jay Cutler is going to make in Chicago, especially while he's talking about how awful Broncos fans are. However, no one seems to be talking about new Bronco quarterback Kyle Orton.

The Purdue product never led the Bears to anything great, but to compare his performance in the Windy City to the possible one in Mile High, is like comparing grapes to pears.
Think about, the best receiver is Matt Forte who in reality is a running back, but the best one who actually plays the position is Devin Hester.

Fast forward to today and he's got rookie running back Knowshown Moreno, who, while no Matt Forte, can get the job done. Add in top wideout Brandon Marshall and Wes Welker-type Eddie Royal, that's a lot of improvement.

I'd be surprised to see Orton not make a fantasy impact, draft him as a No. 2, but be prepared to have a decision to make at quarterback every week.

Kevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions

As a senior at Central Florida, he ended up 62 yards short of breaking Barry Sanders' record for most rushing yards in a season.

Last year behind an awful offensive line, Kevin Smith ran for over 900-plus yards as a rookie.

Add in Clinton Portis' blocker Jon Jansen and the Lions' O-line should be improved.

Watch for Smith to top 1,000 yards this year, which in my opinion warrants at the highest a fourth round pick and a spot as your No. 2 running back.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers

The University of Illinois product broke his shoulder as a rookie, but is healthy now and ready to make an impact.

Face it, Willie Parker is aging quickly, kind of like Tiki Barber did and in my opinion, this second year runner is like a young Brandon Jacobs.

In 2009, Mendenhall should get an increase in carries and not have to wait for others to get injured to make an impact.

Parker and Mendenhall should be a reverse of the Giants and instead of being "Smash and Dash", they'll be "Dash (Parker) and Smash (Mendenhall)".

Mendenhall will make an impact and should get goal line touches, make him a late round pick and expect more than you're average late rounder.

Davone Bess, WR, Miami Dolphins

The Hawaii product was a top target for gun slinger Colt Brennan, but still went undrafted in 2008.

Following the draft, he signed on with the Miami Dolphins and didn't make a big impact in the first 12 games.

But when Greg Camarillo became injured, Bess was elevated to starter and quickly became one of Chad Pennington's favorite targets.

With his only competition for a starter role being Ted Ginn Jr., expect Bess to make an impact this year.

My suggestion is to wait until one of the last two or three rounds to take him ,since everybody else will likely be passing on him.

Josh Morgan, WR, San Francisco 49ers

Morgan was drafted in the sixth round as coming into the 2008 season was considered a project and wasn't expected to make an impact.

But, when he got playing time against the New York Giants and had 86receiving yards with a touchdown, he quickly became more important to the 'Niners' offense.

My only worry about Morgan is the depth at wide receiver for San Francisco. With Arnaz Battle, Isaac Bruce, Brandon Jones, and rookie holdout Michael Crabtree all likely to see playing time, he's going to be sharing some time with a lot of guys. However, Morgan played sparingly last year and still got 319 yards.

Now, realistically, you couldn't pay me to take him until the rounds get into the double digits unless you're in a really obese league, so take him late and just like Bess expect him to do more than your average late rounder.

Kevin Walter, WR, Houston Texans

Walter before arriving in Houston had a career total of 30 catches in three years with Cincinnati. In the same amount of time in the Lone Star State, he has more than quadrupled that.

With Walter man-to-man on most occasions, his receiving yards and touchdowns have both increased over the past three years.

Draft him as a bench guy in the middle to late rounds, but expect him to be a starter by the end of the year.

Brent Celek, TE, Philadelphia Eagles

Well, the Philadelphia Eagles' tight end situation has seen some change with L.J. Smith bolting through free agency and draft pick Cornelius Ingram coming down with an injury.

Currently, the only competition Celek faces is journeyman Matt Schobel and rookies Eugene Bright and Rob Myers.

Expect, Celek to make an impact for Philly since any quarterback appreciates a tight end who can catch the ball, when the wideouts can't get open.

Syracuse Orange Tell Running Back Latavius Murray, "We Don't Need You"

Former Central Florida running back Latavius Murray, has been told that the Syracuse Orange football program doesn't need him.

Murray, who played as a true freshman for the Golden Knights, tore his ACL when he informed head coach George O'Leary he wanted out.

The ex-Onondaga High School star, had said that he wanted to transfer to Syracuse and would be willing to be either a running back or linebacker.

A Syracuse assistant informed Murray on Friday night that the school would not offer him a scholarship, but he could walk onto the team if he so wished.

Talking about the rejection, Murray said, "Disappointed. Disappointed. I would have liked to have come home and played for the hometown and try and be a part of this rebuilding. But you know what? It was their decision. What happens, happens."

Murray has also stated that he intends to wait it out and not walk onto the program.

Currently, the Orange have injury-prone senior Delone Carter, sophomore Antwon Bailey who played last year as a true freshman. Averin Collier and Michael Jones also sophomores, complete the Orange's stable of running backs.

The Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 19

It's time to make your final playoff push in Fantasy Baseball and if you're like one of my teams, you need to make a move, whether it be a trade or a waiver wire pickup.

For the latter, here are my suggestions to help bring you to your league's playoffs.

Add Them Now:

Neftali Feliz, SP/RP, Texas Rangers

The Rangers acquired this flamethrower from the Braves in the Mark Teixeira deal and he's finally paying dividends. In three relief appearances, he has eight strikeouts in 10 innings with only one hit allowed which was a home run. If you need a reliever or just someone who can rack up strikeouts, grab Feliz without hesitation.

Gordon Beckham, SS/3B, Chicago White Sox

Beckham is hitting .308 with 61 hits, six home runs and 39 RBI in only 198 at bats. Ignore the fact he's on the road all next week, because he's just that good of a hitter.

Drop Them Now:

John Smoltz, SP, Boston Red Sox

I have to say I'm surprised it took the Red Sox this long to designate him for assignment. He's 2-5 with 59 hits allowed and a 8.32 ERA. Avoid him even if he comes back again.

Edinson Volquez, SP, Cincinnati Reds

If you were holding onto the Reds stud pitcher in hopes he'd comeback, you were greeted by some bad news this week. Volquez is out for a whole year with Tommy John Surgery. Drop him now and don't draft him next year until he's given the green flag to comeback.

Brandon Webb, SP, Arizona Diamondbacks

I feel bad for whoever drafted him, only one start this year and he's done. Chris Carpenter, anyone? Unless you're in a keeper league, drop him and hope he comes back to being Brandon Webb next year. Although, if I took him this year, you wouldn't be able to pay me to take him next year since I'd probably miss the playoffs because of him.

Monitor Their Status:

Bud Norris, SP, Houston Astros

Let's face it, Bud Norris is a rookie and rookies are prone to fluke performances. But two straight?

In two starts this year, Norris is 2-0 with 16 strikeouts in just as many innings. A 1.69 ERA and 1.12 WHIP doesn't hurt either. However, don't get ahead of yourself, his next start is at Florida and Ricky Nolasco. See how he responds and then go after him.

Brian Matusz, SP, Baltimore Orioles

I'm going to get killed for this one just like I did with Jordan Zimmermann but even after striking out five in his debut, his next start comes against Roy Halladay in Toronto. Avoid him for now.

Justin Masterson, SP, Cleveland Indians

Masterson had 71 strikeouts in 75 innings with a 4.32 ERA as a Red Sox reliever. But after being traded to Cleveland in the Victor Martinez deal, this strikeout machine takes over Carl Pavano's rotation spot.

He'll make his first two Indians' starts on the road. With the first start being today at the White Sox and Carlos Torres, the next will be on the 14th at Minnesota and Carl Pavano. See how those two starts go before pulling the trigger.

CFL: Derick Armstrong Remains a Free Agent, But For How Much Longer?

After one game this year, in which wide receiver Derick Armstrong declined to play since he was made designated import, he was released.

Following his release, many Hamilton fans like myself believed it would be a match made in heaven for Armstrong to team up with star Prechae Rodriguez and young quarterback Quinton Porter.

But that never turned out and Hamilton ended up trading the rights to defensive lineman Corey Mace (now with the Bills) to the Argonauts for unhappy star Arland Bruce.

Now let's think here, Hamilton now has more than likely no interest in him, Montreal should be good without him, Calgary has seven active ones so no need there, Edmonton is solid enough and Saskatchewan has really no problem with its wideouts.

So that leaves BC and Toronto since I doubt Winnipeg will take him back. But since Toronto recently re-signed P. K. Sam (he signed with Buffalo in the offseason but was waived when he became injured) and so far Mike Bradwell and Tyler Scott have held their own as well. So I'll take Toronto out of the running.

That leaves BC if you didn't figure that out already.

Why BC you ask? Yes, Paris Jackson was a CFL West All-Star last year and Geroy Simon is just amazing. Rookie Emmanuel Arceneaux has also impressed while there's really nothing wrong with Ryan Grice-Mullen, Rufus Skillern, Greg Hetherington and Lyle Green.

But that's just the thing everyone other than Simon will get no more one defender. And since you play three that's not so good.

By bringing in Derick Armstrong, the Lions add another scary wide receiver which will take some attention off of Geroy Simon who's been held pretty quiet for who he is.

In my opinion, if the Lions intend to turn around their 1-4 start, bringing in Armstrong would be a great building block towards doing that.

Five Under the Radar Stories At New York Giants Training Camp

The 2009 NFL season is fast approaching, and teams are ready to start preparing.

Two-a-days will determine battles all across the league. Whether it be their starting quarterback, or starting outside linebacker, each team has battles.

The 2007 Super Bowl champion, New York Giants are no different.

Coming off a 12-4 season with a playoff birth that ended against Philadelphia, the Giants have a lot of questions to answer.

Who will step up for Plaxico Burress? How will the loss of Steve Spagnuolo effect the defense?

Those questions however are the ones everyone is asking, what about the ones no one is talking about? I rank my top five under the radar stories heading into Giants training camp.
Begin Slideshow

Not a Game: T.J. Houshmandzadeh To Boycott "Madden" Over Ratings Snub

New Seattle Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh says that he'll boycott playing the new Madden NFL 10 video game.

The reason why the avid video gamer is boycotting is because he believes his rating is too low.

Houshmandzadeh blames the Bengals offense last season for his "low" 91 rating.

In Other News

Vick's Been Working Out

While in house arrest, Michael Vick, who's now a free man, has been working out with Tom Shaw for the past three weekends.

Shaw said of Vick, "He knows he's made a mistake, he's very remorseful, and he's very humble."

Roethlisberger Accused of Assault

Ben Roethlisberger faces a civil suit after being accused of sexually assaulting a female working at Harrah's Casino in Las Vegas.

The woman who accused Roethlisberger is Andrea McNulty. The agent for Roethlisberger says of the accusation and suit, "Ben has never sexually assaulted anyone, especially Andrea McNulty."

Drew Bennett, D.J. Hackett, and two others to try out

Former Rams wideout Drew Bennett and former Panthers receiver D.J. Hackett, along with two unknown players, will try out for the Baltimore Ravens on Friday.

Jesse Holley wins 4th and Long

Jesse Holley, a backup point guard and wide receiver for the North Carolina Tar Heels, won a contract with the Dallas Cowboys after winning Michael Irvin's reality show 4th and Long.

Holley previously spent six weeks on the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad in 2007 and attended training camp with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in 2008 but left due to a contract dispute.

CFL: Ranking the Rookies

Rookies always make an impact. Whether they're returning kickoffs, catching passes or sacking quarterbacks. The purpose of this slideshow is to try and rank the top ten rookies in the CFL. Every team but the only unbeaten team have been mentioned. Which isn't shocking since Montreal didn't have many holes to fill this offseason.

Whether you disagree or think I I'm the smartest feel free to comment. Enjoy and make sure to visit http://thecanadianfootballleaguereport.blogspot.com/
Begin Slideshow

The Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 16

Week 16 of the Fantasy Baseball season is upon us and so is my waiver wire.

Add Them Now

Garrett Jones, 1B, Pittsburgh Pirates

Jones only has 48 at bats in the majors this season but has made the most of it. He's currently hitting .312 with seven home runs and 9 RBI. Now be careful he doesn't have a proven track record and could just be getting lucky but if need someone who can hit for power don't hesitate to pick up Jones.

Mat Latos, SP, San Diego Padres

I'd usually tell you all to hold off on picking up the next hot prospect but Latos is different. Different in that in Single-A he had a 0.36 ERA and in Double-A he had a 1.91 ERA. Latos has a awful team behind him so watch him in his start Sunday, I'd expect nothing less than a win.

Drop Them Now

Gil Meche, SP, Kansas City Royals

Personally, I dropped Meche a few weeks ago but he just hit the disabled list. Meche wasn't great before injuring his back as he had a 4-9 record with a 4.50 ERA. Drop him in favor of a guy like Latos or JA Happ.

Brandon Morrow, RP, Seattle Mariners

Morrow was sent down to the minors to make room for Jack Hannahan a few days ago. Before the demotion he was 0-4 with six saves and a 5.28 ERA. The M's former closer is of no fantasy use for the near future.

Monitor Their Status

Jonathan Sanchez, SP, San Francisco Giants

Sanchez pitched the season's first no-hitter, but that doesn't mean he's useful for fantasy purposes. Sanchez's no-no is like the one Florida Marlins' starter Anibal Sanchez threw in 2007 because the guy was the last one you'd expect to do it and will never been anything special in the next year.

Pedro Martinez, SP, Philadelphia Phillies

See last week's waiver wire for more info. He's going to start rehabbing with Single-A Clearwater. Watch his debut closely to see if he's still got what it takes to pitch.

CFL: Ex-Red Raider Graham Harrell Signs With Saskatchewan Roughriders

The Regina Leader-Post is reporting that ex-Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell has agreed in principle with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

During his collegiate career, Harrell was the 2006 Insight Bowl MVP, First Team All-Academic in the Big 12 three times, winner of the Sammy Baugh Trophy, 2008 Gator Bowl MVP, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner and a Heisman Trophy candidate.

Last season he had 5,111 in the Red Raiders pass happy offense.

After going undrafted in this year's NFL Draft, he tried out for the Cleveland Browns but didn't make the final roster.

Saskatchewan now has five quarterbacks, three active. Darian Durant, Steven Jyles, and Dalton Bell are the active ones with ex-Montana quarterback Cole Bergquist on the practice roster.

The Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week Fifteen

I haven't done one of these since May 16 so with the short fantasy week starting tomorrow, it seemed as good a time as any to restart it.

Add Them Now

Rafael Soriano, Closer, Atlanta Braves

For the season Soriano has 12 saves, 58 strikeouts, a 1.48 ERA and an impressive 0.89 WHIP. Those stats don't really jump out at you, but what if I told you more than one-half of his 12 saves and almost one-half of his strikeouts came in the last month. On top of that, the veteran reliever has a 1.38 ERA and 0.62 WHIP.

Franklin Gutierrez, OF, Seattle Mariners

Gutierrez has been on fire since June 16, hitting .395 with seven home runs. The best part is that as of today he's on a 12 game hit streak. So far during the streak, the ex-Cleveland Indian is hitting .479 with three home runs.

Drop Them Now

Jay Bruce, OF, Cincinnati Reds

Bruce recently broke his wrist, which will take about six to eight weeks to completely heal. He was hitting .207 before the injury so don't worry about dropping him.

Sean West, SP, Florida Marlins

After recording seven strikeouts against the Yankees, West has gone downhill quickly. In three starts, he's equaled the seven K's he had against the Yanks and lasted on 4 2/3 innings in his last start against Arizona. Following the game, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said West was going to be sent to the minors, which erased any value he had.

Monitor Their Status

Ryan Doumit, C, Pittsburgh Pirates

Yeah, I know he's a good catcher and fantasy player, but he's only played three games since April 19. So, personally I'd like to see some more before I pick him up.

Pedro Martinez, SP, Philadelphia Phillies

Martinez signed today with the Philadelphia Phillies and was immediately placed on the DL. Watch him because the Phillies obviously expect him to make an impact.

CFL: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Add Two Recent NFLers

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed two recent NFLers, quarterback Darrell Hackney (Denver Broncos) and Jonathan Hefney (Philadelphia Eagles).

Hackney was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2006 after a successful career at Alabama-Birmingham. At UAB he set four school records in passing yards, touchdowns, completions, and total offensive per game. After being cut by the Browns he signed with the Denver Broncos on January 2, 2007.

After battling with Jay Cutler, Preston Parsons, and Patrick Ramsey he made the team. In 2008, he re-joined Denver, but this time on their practice roster before being promoted on November 1 when Ramsey was placed on injured reserve. After the Broncos signed Chris Simms and acquired Kyle Orton in the Cutler trade, Hackney was waived by Denver.

Hefney was a starter at safety and cornerback while at Tennessee and was signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2008. On July 25 he was released by the Bucs. He would later sign with the Philadelphia Eagles and earn a spot on the practice roster. He was cut later in the season.

The Blue Bombers have also signed Jasper Johnson, Chase Ortiz, and Bradley Pierson.

This article also appeared on The CFL Report the unofficial (obviously) home of the CFL, always looking for more writers if you would like to join please contact me either by e-mail or on my bulletin board.

The Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week Seven

Week seven of the fantasy baseball season and their have been lots of changes made since week one, but what changes do you need to make this week? That's what I'm here to tell you.

Add Them Now

Brett Cecil, SP, Toronto Blue Jays
Anybody who's 2-0 has 15 strikeouts, a 1.80 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP deserves a pickup. Cecil is no exception to that especially since the Blue Jays are shocking the world this year.

Juan Pierre, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
Pierre has 25 hits in 64 at bats, 11 runs scored, 9 RBI, five steals and a .390 batting average. Nothing to be stunned about but practically guaranteed a lineup spot with Manny on maternity leave means you've got to pick up the speedy veteran.

Drop Them Now

Phil Hughes, SP, New York Yankees
He's 23 so what do you expect other than a rocky road to stardom. As of today Hughes has a 1-2 record, 10 strikeouts, 12 walks, 23 hits allowed, and a 7.56 ERA with a 2.10 WHIP. He'll kill your WHIP and ERA so drop him until he gets it back together as he's clearly not ready for the bright lights of New York.

Brad Ziegler, RP, Oakland Athletics
Ziegler was/is Oakland's closer and has four saves, 11 strikeouts, four walks, 20 hits, a 4.40 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. But all signs point to Andrew Bailey taking over the closer duties so drop Ziegler and get Bailey or one of the guys I mentioned above.

Monitor Their Status

Andrew Bailey, RP, Oakland Athletics
Bailey has a 3-0 record, one save, 26 strikeouts, seven walks, seven hits allowed, a 1.61 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP. Pretty good but he's worthless as a reliever unless closing all signs point to him taking the job but watch to see what happens before pulling the trigger.

Stephen Strasburg, SP, Washington Nationals (?)
Strasburg has even been drafted yet so stop picking him up, will you? He's already owned in 12 percent of CBS leagues and started in one percent! Just stop it will you, yeah I know he's the best thing since sliced bread but let him get drafted first. Don't pick him up until he gets a call-up if this season.

Analyzing the Quarterbacks Chosen Before Tom Brady in the 2000 NFL Draft

The 2000 NFL Draft will always be remebered as the one that produced the immortal Tom Brady.

But for some they remember it for their team taking Chad Pennington or Marc Bulger.

And for the rest they remember the fact that Brady fell to the sixth round and their team took a quarterback who's not even a pro anymore.

In the following slides I take a look at all 12 quarterbacks taken in the 2000 NFL Draft in order of draft position.
Begin Slideshow

CFL: Toronto Argonauts Sign Four; Including an Ex-Pro Bowler

The Toronto Argonauts have announced the signings of four imports, ex-pro bowl wide receiver and kick returner Jerome Mathis, quarterback Stephen Reaves, linebacker John Keith, and cornerback Dovonte Edwards.

Reaves spent his first two college years at Michigan State and his final two at Southern Mississippi. As a senior in 2007, he completed 95 passes and three touchdowns. After going undrafted in 2008, he joined the Oakland Raiders as a coaching intern.

Mathis was a rookie in 2005 when he was named a pro bowler as a kick returner. He also spent 2006 and 2007 with Houston, and spent time with the Washington Redskins during the 2008 off-season.

Edwards who was a MVP while with North Carolina State on defense, played two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, and spent time with the New York Giants on their practice roster. He intercepted a Brett Favre pass (who by the way should just retire) and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown.

Keith was signed after a career with the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions and went undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The Argonauts also announced the release of linebacker Matt Hewitt and safety David Lofton.

The Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week Six

Week Six of the fantasy baseball season is here, and so is my Week Six Waiver Wire...

Add Them Now

Justin Upton OF, Arizona Diamondbacks

Upton is only available in 21 percent of CBS leagues meaning in most leagues you can't pick him up. But if your in the minority of leagues where he's a free agent pick him up now. Why pick him up though? Well he's hitting .294 with 15 RBI, six home runs, 25 hits and has two stolen bases and 10 walks, you've never hit the "pickup this player" button quicker.

Alberto Callaspo 2B, Kansas City Royals

Callaspo is seventh in the American League with a .359 batting average. Along with his awesome batting average he's got 33 hits, 16 runs scored, two home runs, 11 RBI, and gotten 10 walks. He'll really help your batting average so pick him up.

Drop Them Now

Emilio Bonifacio 3B, Florida Marlins

The hot starter is now the cold hitter. Bonifacio is hitting .250 with 17 runs, 31 hits, one home run, six RBI, eight walks and six stolen bases. He's finally come back to being himself so drop him now.

Oliver Perez, SP, New York Mets

The bullpen was bad and now the disabled list is worse. He's 1-2 with 20 strikeouts, 21 walks, 28 hits allowed, a 9.97 ERA and a 2.26 WHIP. It's time to drop him but don't lose sight of him because when he's good he's one of the better pitchers for the Mets.

Monitor Their Status

Matt LaPorta OF, Cleveland Indians

LaPorta got the call when Travis Hafner hit the disabled list but needs to get his act together before I endorse him. In four games so far he's hitting .158 and has two RBI, one home run, two hits, scored three runs and walked once. He's got the tools all he needs is to put it together.

Melky Cabrera, OF, New York Yankees

Cabrera's on fire right now with a .333 average, 14 runs, 23 hits, four home runs, 10 RBI, 10 walks and three stolen bases. My only hesitation is how much playing time he gets in a crowded Yankees outfield.

Meet Florida Marlins' Top Prospect: Jose Ceda

Continuing my 30 part series where I take a trip around the major leagues and pick one prospect from each to profile, this week I'll do Florida Marlins prospect Jose Ceda.

For past versions: Phillies, Mets
Let's start off with Jose Ceda was born on January 28, 1987 in the Dominican Republic.

He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Diego Padres in 2006.

Ceda was sent to the Arizona League Padres where he posted a 2-0 record, 5.09 ERA in eight games, four of which he started.

Adding to that he gave up 14 runs, 13 hits, 13 walks and strucko ut 31.

Not sparkling but coming right out of the highest amateur level in the Dominican Republic what else can you expect, he was a raw talent.

However on trade deadline day 2006 he was dealt to the Chicago Cubs for infielder Todd Walker.

The Cubs immediatley sent him to the Arizona League Cubs.

For the AZL Cubs he went 0-0 with a 0.75 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances totaling 12 innings of work. Striking out 21 he began to prove that his ability to strike people out was tremendous.

Ceda was called up to the Low-A Boise Hawks.

In Boise, he went 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA, 0.64 WHIP, all in three games all of which were starts.

Also he tallied 11 innings of work, five hits allowed, four earned runs, two walks and 11 strikeouts.

In 2007, he began the season with the AZL Cubs.

For the Cubs he put together a 0-0 record, 2.45 ERA, and 1.36 WHIP in two games one of which was a start.

He only gave up one hit, one run, three walks and struck out another three. All of these came in 3.2 innings pitched.

Ceda was calle up to the Class-A Peoria Chiefs.

While with the Chiefs he went 2-2 with a 3.11 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in six starts and 15 relief appearances.

He pitched 46.1 innings, and gave up 14 hits, 18 runs, 16 were earned and 31 walks. Ceda struck out an astounding 66 batters!

2008 found the Cubs top prospect showing what he had with the High-A Dayton Dragons.

In Dayton, he went 2-2 and had a 4.80 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 12 starts and three appearances in relief.

Pitching in 54.1 innings, he gave up 41 hits, 29 runs, 28 walks and struck out 53.

Chicago felt strongly enough about his numbers to give him a callup to the Double-A Tennessee Smokies.

In Tennessee he went 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 22 games all of which were in relief.

He pitched in 30.1 innings, giving up 26 hits, seven earned runs, 14 walks and 42 strikeouts.

On November 13, 2008, the Cubs shipped Ceda to the Florida Marlins for closer Kevin Gregg.

So far this year pitching for the Double-A Jacksonville Suns he has yet to get in a game.

The Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week Five

Okay, here is my week five fantasy baseball waiver wire, where I take a look at the world of baseball and suggest who to pick up, who to drop, and who to watch.

Add Them Now:

Dexter Fowler OF, Colorado Rockies

Fowler's speed is amazing, with nine stolen bases already. And not only is he speedy, but he's touched the plate 12 times with two home runs, seven RBI, and eight walks.

His batting average is a solid .290, with 18 base hits.

I suggest you pick him up now, and if he gets any hotter, trade him away for a big need.

Phil Hughes SP, New York Yankees

Hughes had an astounding first start, throwing six solid innings and giving up only two hits while striking out six.

He has a great offensive attack to help give him run support, which, for fellow super rookie Jordan Zimmermann, is not existent. Grab Hughes instead.

Drop Them Now:

Kenshin Kawakami SP, Atlanta Braves

The Japanese import has had a rough go so far, ending April with a 1-3 record.

Along with that, he's got 11 walks allowed and 24 hits against him, earning him a 7.06 ERA, a 1.62 WHIP, and an injured shoulder.

It's time to drop him—not that you should have ever picked him up in the first place.

Oliver Perez SP, New York Mets

Perez has been told to get his pitching performance on track or he'll find himself on the bench. As a fantasy owner, that's one of the last things you want to hear.

His 9.31 ERA, 1.97 WHIP, 23 hits given up, and 15 free passes have resulted in a 1-2 record, meaning it's time to give up on him or hope he becomes the Oliver Perez we all know.

Monitor Their Status:

Joe Beimel RP, Washington Nationals

Beimel, who's on the disabled list as of today, has been named the closer for the Nationals when he comes back. He'll begin a Class A rehab assignment on Wednesday.

Matt LaPorta OF, Cleveland Indians

When Travis Hafner was placed on the disabled list, it opened up a hole on the 25-man roster. LaPorta is tearing the cover off the ball in Columbus, and now it's up to the Indians to decide between him and David Delluci.

Ex-NFL quarterbacks Josh Betts, Erik Meyer, and Adam Tafralis will fight for the third spot come June.

CFL: Edmonton Eskimos and Toronto Argonauts Announce Signings

The Edmonton Eskimos have signed free agent quarterback Jared Zabransky.

Zabransky is an ex-NCAA College Football video game cover athlete and Boise State Broncos football player.

After going undrafted in 2007 he was signed by the Houston Texans, but was released before playing a game.

In 2008, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers and that ended like his Houston stint did.

He has a big arm once telling ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit that he could throw a potato 80 yards.

He'll compete for the backup job to Ricky Ray with Jason Maas and Juan Joseph.

The Toronto Argonauts announced that they have signed defensive end Kevin Huntley.

They currently have 12 who will compete for roster spots.

Huntley is 6-7, and has spent time with the Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, and Pittsburgh Steelers, but hasn't played in a game since 2007.

With the Raiders he had his best season putting up 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks along with a fumble recovery in six games played.

Analyzing the New York Giants 2009 Draft

The Giants made nine picks in the 2009 NFL Draft, and now I'm going to analyze them.

Round One, Pick 29: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

Hakeem Nicks (6-1, 212) gives the Giants the wide receiver they needed, he can come in and start right away. Another strength is that he has a knack for making "circus catches" which is much needed when playing in the windy Meadowlands.

Round Two, Pick 45: Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia

Clint Sintim (6-3, 256) gives the Giants the linebacker they badly needed. Sintim will come in and more than likely start on day one. He will play strong side linebacker opposite free agent pickup Michael Boley.

Round Two, Pick 60: William Beatty, OT, UConn

William Beatty (6-6, 307) brings offensive line depth and a project.

Currently David Diehl and Kareem McKenzie are the starting tackles and although Beatty will put pressure on them for the starting job, more than likely he'll stay on the bench and play "swing tackle".

This pick more than likely means the end of the road for Guy Whimper on another benched tackle.

Round Three, Pick 85: Ramses Barden, WR, Cal Poly

Ramses Barden (6-6, 229) is a raw talent and has the potential to be a Plaxico Burress type player for the Giants.

After playing at Cal Poly he went unnoticed until the Mustangs took on the Wisconsin Badgers, in which Barden had a stellar game that showed scouts he wasn't just a "jump up and get it" type wideout.

I expect Barden to be the starter of the future along side Hakeem Nicks but for now he'll be the third or fourth guy.

Round Three, Pick 100: Travis Beckum, TE, Wisconsin

Travis Beckum (6-3, 243) is a god awful blocker, and will not do any of that in New York. Instead he'll play on the offensive line and just catch passes (i.e. he'll play halfback) and he's a nice compliment to blocking tight end Kevin Boss.

Round Four, Pick 129: Andre Brown, RB, NC State

Andre Brown (6-0, 124) will bring his injuries to New York as he had two surgeries in 2007 for a fractured foot, but the Giants don't seem to be too worried about it. He will compete with Danny Ware for the third spot in this year's "Earth, Wind, and Fire."

Round Five, Pick 151: Rhett Bomar, QB, Sam Houston State

Rhett Bomar (6-2, 225) brings "speed" and a big arm to the Giants.

I guess this is the best the Giants could do in this weak senior quarterback class but after putting up 340 yards against Kansas this season he should be a quality backup for the Giants and will compete with David Carr for that job.

Round Six, Pick 200: DeAndre Wright, CB, New Mexico

DeAndre Wright (5-11, 198) is a solid cover corner, but has a small frame and had surgery on both shoulders this offseason.

He will most likely have to fight for one of the last roster spots and I personally believe he'll beat out Rashad Barksdale (practice squad guy last year) and fellow draft pick Stoney Woodson for the fifth cornerback spot.

Round Seven, Pick 238: Stoney Woodson, CB, South Carolina

Stoney Woodson (5-11, 197) has poor size and poor speed and I doubt he'll make a career in the NFL. He's most likely camp fodder and a probable practice squad member.

Undrafted Free Agents

New York has signed six undrafted free agents so far: defensive ends Maurice Evans and Alex Field, linebacker Kenny Ingram, safeties Sha'reff Rashard and Otis Wiley, and cornerback Vince Anderson.

All are camp bodies who will eventually end up on the practice squad.

2009 CFL Mock Draft V1.0

Okay the 2009 CFL Draft will be held May 2 and since that's only like a week away I figured I'd released my the first version of my official mock draft.

1. Hamilton Tiger-Cats

After addressing the offensive line need part of the way by adding all-star Dan Goodspeed I think the Tiger-Cats go for a game breaker and add ex-Bishop's Gaiters running back Jamall Lee to replaced Jesse Lumsden who was lost in free agency to the Edmonton Eskimos.

2. Toronto Argonauts

With Lee of the board, the Argos head for their second option slotback Matt Carter, he should bring what Toronto needs since he's arguably the best receiver in the draft.

3. Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Before the Goodspeed trade most people were projecting offensive lineman Simeon Rottier to go first but after that trade, Rottier falls to third and the TiCats add the much needed offensive lineman.

4. BC Lions

The Lions have three picks in a row and I believe that they answer their offensive line need after losing Rob Murphy to Toronto as a free agent. With the fourth pick Scott Myddelton comes off the board.

5. BC Lions

Osie Ukwuoma will probably be added here to add defensive line depth, and to provide ample time for a possible trade with the Blue Bombers.

6. BC Lions

Now I'm thinking this pick will get traded to Winnipeg and whether it does or doesn't, Matt Morencie another offensive lineman will likely be the pick.

7. Montreal Alouettes

The Alouettes have no true holes so they opt to go with depth and will take ex-Laval defensive lineman Étienne Légaré.

8. Calgary Stampeders

Calgary Dinos offensive lineman Dylan Steenbergen is the likely pick here because not only is he talented but he's a local kid.
