UFL: Four New Team Names

The UFL as everyone should know is the brand new football league starting this fall (UFL stands for United Football League). Now in the up coming weeks the teams will pick their names. They claim that they will listen to fans and let them choose so here are my ideas.

New York Associates: New York is a very business heavy city and they preach being professional. The name associates also describes the way you want a team to be well organized and to think as one.

Orlando Riptides: The name not only represents a very beach orientated state but it also shows aggression. A Riptide is a very dangerous thing and you never know when it will take you out.

San Francisco Tremors: This is perfect because it represents the earthquakes that California is so well known for. In addition, the name has some backbone.

Las Vegas Sinners: This is my favorite name because it not only describes the city perfectly but it also provides instant swagger to a team.

Some other names include: Inferno, Juggernauts, and Sharks

What You Need to Know about the Atlanta Falcons Defensive Line

Last season the Atlanta Falcons had one of the most inconsistent defensive lines in the NFL. Statistically the Falcons ranked 11th in the NFL in sacks with 34. This stat however does not tell the real story. The reason is that 16 of those sacks belonged to one man, John Abraham.

On top of that there were only two other players on the team with more then two sacks and only six players in total with more then one sack and one of those players has left the Falcons. (Grady Jackson) In addition to the poor pass rushing the Falcons' also were poor against the run.

The Falcons ranked 25th in run defense. They also ranked fourth in yards allowed per carry at 4.9. This was not a defensive line that could support a playoff caliber team, but that has changed. Well hopefully.

During this off season the Falcons drafted two defensive linemen who have the ability to contribute right away, but more importantly the younger defensive linemen have had a chance to grow.

According to multiple reports Jamaal Anderson has been working extremely hard this off season in order to not only break out, but to prove that he is not a bust. But is that enough I mean the question still persists.

Will the Falcons' defensive line be better in the up coming 2009 season or not? In order to answer the question I will go over the defensive line's personnel.

Starting Left End: Jamaal Anderson. Since the first day Anderson was drafted he has been under a great deal of pressure to succeed. These expectations however are justified.

Anderson was the eight overall pick in the 2007 draft and as everyone knows when you are drafted that high you must succeed. In Anderson's short career he has only registered a pitiful two sacks in 31 game. Both of which came in the 2008 season.

Now there have been arguments that although Anderson is not a great pass rusher he is an above average run stopper which is true, but when you are drafted eighth overall you have to be more then above average.

I do however expect this to be Anderson's break out year. As I mentioned earlier he has been working amazingly hard this off season and he is very much aware that the Falcons are getting tired of him not performing.

Starting Defensive Tackle: Jonathan Babineaux. Last season we saw Babineaux develop into one of the better tackles in the NFL. He recorded four sacks in 2008 which was a slight improvement over his 2007 season.

What is strange about Babineaux though is that although his playing time went up his total tackles decreased. This is not something to worry about though, because he is by far the most versatile lineman the Falcons have. Babineaux is the only lineman who consistently played every situation.

I expect Babineaux to continue his growth as a play making tackle while still making the plays we expect of him.

Starting Nose Tackle: Peria Jerry. Jerry is a rookie who should be able to contribute from day one. Jerry weighs around 300 pounds and will have to play big in order to play defensive tackle effectively in the NFL.

Jerry has very active hands and can hold his own in double teams which is one of the main reasons the Falcons drafted him. Jerry will also provide a huge boost to the interior pass run. He has amazing feet for his size and can disrupt the pocket from the inside. I believe that Jerry will be the key to the Falcons' run defense in 2009.

If he slips up there is truly not another space eater behind him, which could very well mean another mediocre year for the Falcons' run defense.

Starting Right End: John Abraham. Abraham has been one of the most dominant pass rushers in the NFL. In the past two years he has totaled 26.5 sacks. One of the main reasons for his success has been his health.

After years of injuries Abraham has finally been able to become the elite rusher we all knew he was. Abraham's role will not change much in the upcoming year. He will be rested on most running plays and be put in on obvious passing situations.

Coach Smith believes this is the best way to keep their best defender healthy. Abraham will more then likely break double digits in sacks yet again, but his biggest contribution will be helping the other defensive ends develop.

Key Reserve One: Chauncey Davis. Davis is a player who can fill in at either end spot when ever he is needed to. Davis was signed to a new contract this off season which could either indicate a lack of trust in Anderson or firm belief in Davis either way though Davis will be a Falcon for a few more years.

The question is will he start or will he continue his back up role. Last season Davis recorded four sacks to tie with Babineaux for second most sacks on the roster. This of course was done while only starting one game.

Davis is still basically the defensive lines' insurance policy. He will get at least three sacks and could very well blossom into an elite rusher.

Key Reserve Two: Kroy Biermann. A lesser known player on the Falcons' roster. Kroy was drafted last year to provide depth and pass rush help and well he did exactly that. Kroy recorded 21 tackles and registered two sacks in limited play.

This is decent production considering he was a fifth round pick last season. There is still a lot of room for Kroy to improve, but considering his weight (247 pounds) he will have to play the right side his whole career which means his versatility is limited.

Kroy will more then likely duplicate his sack total from last season which is all you can really ask from a fifth round pick.

Key Reserve Three: Lawrence Sidbury Jr. The second rookie lineman the Falcons drafted. Sidbury like Kroy was brought in to bring added depth to the Falcons while contributing in pass rush situations. Many people believe that Sidbury could be the heir to Abraham's starting job in a few years.

For now however all we have on Sidbury is speculation. He has good size and can create solid space with his arms to help him rush the quarterback. I do see him getting a solid amount of playing time considering the Falcons' defensive line rotation.

On a whole I would say that the Falcons should have a significantly better defensive line this year then they did in 2008. There is a solid mix of veterans and youngsters and enough depth to patch any real problems that arise.

The improved secondary will help the defensive line as well with its increased talent and experience. The only concern with the line is the play of Jerry I believe how he goes so goes the team.

Most Interesting Games For The Atlanta Falcons In 2009

Every year there are those matchups that make fans' eyes light up. The problem is those games are very limited. The games are also only talked about if they have national appeal. Well as great as some of the games that are being highlighted will be, I would like to explain the top five most interesting games for the Falcons in 2009.

5. Week 1 Miami Dolphins @ Atlanta Falcons

These two teams are truly in the same boat. Last season both where expected to fail miserably, but instead of failing these two teams thrived. Both of these teams made the playoffs in 2008 only one year removed from picking first and third in the 2008 NFL Draft.

Not only are both these teams on the rise, but there is added incentive for the Falcons. For any Falcon fan, one of the only bright spots of 2007 was when we were told that Bill Parcells would be our GM. Only to have him turn it down soon after.

Prediction: Falcons jump out to an early lead with the running game and pick up an easy win. Score 28-14 Falcons

4. Week 13 Philadelphia Eagles @ Atlanta Falcons

This game has actually occurred quite a bit for two non divisional opponents. Over the past few years the Eagles have had the advantage in this matchup including last season. This game probably has the most meaning for Matt Ryan who grew up near Philadelphia and was an Eagles fan. Then when you also add in the time this game will be played in the season, these teams could be jockeying for playoff spots this game gets even more important.

Prediction: This will be an old fashioned shoot out with both quarterbacks performing at their best, but in the end the Eagles defense will be the difference and the Eagles will squeak out a win. 35-28 Eagles

3. Week 3 Atlanta Falcons @ New England Patriots

Arguably the best quarterback in the NFL going against arguably the best young quarterback in the NFL. Ryan will get a chance to show the NFL that he can hang with the big dogs in the NFL. This game is only ahead of the Philly and Miami for the fact that it will be an extremely entertaining game. This will also put the Falcons against one of the best teams in the NFL

Prediction: Michael Turner is going to have a field day against the Patriots. I see the Falcons leaning on Turner throughout the game and after all of the hype and comparisons between Ryan and Brady, Turner will really be the star. 21-13 Falcons

2. Week 7 Chicago Bears @ Atlanta Falcons

The Bears are going to be looking for revenge after what happened last year when the Falcons stunned them with a last second field goal to win it. The Bears still have one of the better defenses in the NFL and with Jay Cutler this will not be the same matchup it was last season.

This game will be important for both teams, because it is towards middle of the season where most elite teams break away. Who knows where these teams will stand at that time, but one thing for certain is that this game will more then likely have an impact on the NFC playoffs.

Prediction: I see the Falcons playing extremely physical in this game and grinding out a win. This may not be as close as last year, but this game will come down to the wire. 21-20 Falcons

1. Week 8 Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans Saints

This is one of the most important games of the season for the Falcons. The Saints are projected as being the best team in the NFC South and respectably so. Their offense is off the charts and with the new names they have added on defense, the Saints will be a threat.

The Falcons would more then likely be in position to lead the division if they can win this game. Probably the most important part of this game though is that it is a Monday Night Football Game. This game is a chance for the young Falcons to prove themselves on Primetime.

Prediction: This game will be a score-a-thon. I am talking there is a chance both quarterbacks could throw over 300 yards easily. Of course if the defenses' step up—both the Falcons and Saints made to their defenses stronger in the offseason—I will be wrong. I however do not see that happening. 35-28 Falcons

Hey Michael Jenkins, Do You Have A Minute? (Questions For Jenkins)

These are some questions I would really like to get answered by Michael Jenkins. I am aware that he will never see this article and that this interview will more then likely never happen, but the questions need to be asked.

Michael what advice would you give Jamaal Anderson about not blossoming in the first two years of your career? Or is you have what did you tell him?

What is the feeling you get when you go up for a jump ball?

What route do you have the most confidence in running?

What does Ohio State put in the water to make you guys so good?

I would compare you to Brian Finneran as far as how you play who would you compare yourself to?

What part of your game could use the most work?

And the last question:

Could you ever see yourself on the receiving end of another Michael Vick touchdown pass in the NFL?

Ian Johnson Will Always Haunt Adrian Peterson...Is That a Good Thing?

I am the No. 1 writer for the Atlanta Falcons, but I saw a story to write about that I just could not pass.

Every football fan remembers the historic Fiesta Bowl in 2007. Boise State Broncos upset the powerhouse that is the Oklahoma Sooners, 43-42 in OT. The game in many people's opinion was one of the best college games of all time and I am not one to disagree.

The game was full of tons of trick plays and amazing runs by the future Viking running backs (did I mention that the Vikings signed Ian Johnson). There was no time in which the running backs shined more then in overtime.

The overtime started with Peterson running for a touchdown on the first play. Then it was Johnson's time to shine. On fourth down, the Broncos scored a touchdown and then decided to go for two points and the win. Then the play that put Johnson in the books — The Statue of Liberty Play.

Johnson received the deceptive handoff and ran right into the end zone untouched. Right after Ian ran over to a cheerleader and proposed. She, of course, said yes.

None of this, however, is new. The new information is that Johnson now has to backup Peterson in Minnesota. So does Peterson get the last laugh? Well not quite.

Peterson may be the All-Pro running back of the Minnesota Vikings, but he still has to live with the fact that he lost his last collegiate game and now one of the main players on that squad is not only on his team, but he is at the same position.

Peterson has to help train the one man that sealed the biggest loss of his career. So what will be the effect? Resentment? Maybe motivation?

Could the signing of Johnson be more than the Vikings think? Yes. In this writer's opinion I would have to say that the presence of Johnson alone could push Peterson to new heights that could surprise everyone.

Top Position Battle For The Atlanta Falcons: Safety First

Position battles are one of the most underrated concepts in the NFL.

Position battles have the ability to not only bring the best man forward, but also to improve the depth of a position. Every coach in the NFL prefers competition over guaranteed spots.

The problem is in order to have solid competition on your roster you need to always have a revolving door of talent. The Falcons have had this the past two years, and this year is no exception.

One of, if not the biggest, position battle in Atlanta this offseason is the fight for starting strong safety. There are two very young players and then a veteran, who has been a career backup.

Competition: Thomas DeCoud vs. Jamaal Fudge vs. William Moore

Situation: Last season the Falcons had Lawyer Milloy at strong safety at almost every game. Although Milloy became a liability in pass coverage, he still was one of the most solid tacklers in the NFL.

Despite his productivity though, the Falcons had to release him due to his age and flaws. So now the Falcons face a new problem: who of the young safeties on the roster do they turn to?

Thomas DeCoud

Pros: He has great speed for a strong safety and the ability to truly knock out a runner. He has a history of being a strong tackler.

Cons: He is a little bit to light to be a strong safety in the NFL and has not shown that he can consistently preform at the NFL level

Jamaal Fudge

Pros: He has spent his entire career with Mike Smith, is a very solid tackler, and has been a solid contributor on special teams for three years in the NFL.

Cons: He is 5'9", which is quite small for an NFL safety and could lead to faults in coverage. He does not bring anything special to the table.

William Moore

Pros: He has an amazing college pedigree, especially in 2007. He has great size for a strong safety at 220 and has, by far, the best coverage ability in the group.

Cons: Last season, he was plagued by injuries, which can still be in question, and he has never played in an NFL game.

The Verdict: Knowing the way that Mike Smith coaches, the odds on favorite to win the job would have to be William Moore.

The only way I could see Moore not getting the starting job is barring some injury to him or a break out by DeCoud.

I truly do not see Fudge being a factor in this race, not because he doesn't posses the skills, but because the NFL is a business.

Moore, a second round pick, and DeCoud, a third round pick, both were drafted by Mike Smith in high rounds.

So the final depth chart will read William Moore, Thomas Decoud, and then special teamer Jamaal Fudge.

Cavs to Use 23 Second Shot-Clock In Honor Of LeBron

The Cavaliers are going to show how highly they truly think of Lebron James, by giving up one second off of their shot clock in the Atlanta Hawks series.

LeBron believes that the 23 second shot clock will have no real effect on the game he is thoroughly behind the idea. He originally was against it, but with limited nudging he caved in.

We could not reach LeBron for response, but we did talk to Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Jach Shore: "Kobe what do you think about this shot clock stunt they are doing in Cleveland?"

Kobe: "I don't get why LeBron would want to copy something I have already done."

Jach Shore: "Wait, how is this copying something you have already done? This is the first time this has ever happened in NBA history"

Kobe: "The shot clock reads 24. I wear 24. Why else would it be 24?"

Jach Shore: "Well I cannot argue with that point or rather do not wish to argue that point."

Kobe: "Check Mate"

How this one second deduction of the shot clock effect the game? Who knows maybe it won't have any effect or maybe it will cause numerous shot clock violations.

Either way, I think this showing of honor is just what LeBron needs. I mean he is the original 23 so we might as well bend the rules for him. Wait wasn't there a different 23. O probably not.

What Five NFL Players Are Under the Most Pressure To Succeed in 2009?

Every player in the NFL has to prove themselves every year. It is part of the "What have you done for me lately?" concept that makes the NFL so great. Some players, however, need to prove more than others. Here are the five players that have the most pressure to succeed in the 2009 season:

5. Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings, Running back

Peterson is the only non-quarterback on this list. Last season, Peterson owned the NFL as far as rushing yards. I mean, he was a monster, but there was a flaw: Peterson fumbled the ball nine times. This is a problem that can kill a team, especially considering the amount of times Peterson carries the ball. Peterson needs to start taking over his team, because, well, they do not have a quarterback that will do it. The entire franchise rests on Peterson's shoulders.

4. Tom Brady, New England Patriots, Quarterback

Most people will argue that Brady has nothing to prove; he has won three Super Bowls and holds the record for most touchdown passes in a season. Well, the truth is he does. Last season, when Brady went down, he was replaced by Matt Cassell, who found success in New England. The Patriots then traded Cassell this off-season to the Kansas City Chiefs. This means that Brady must produce now, because there is no back-up plan any more.

3. Matt Cassell, Kansas City Chiefs, Quarterback

As mentioned above, Cassell took over for Brady last season and found success. During this off-season, the Denver Broncos inquired about signing Cassell. That started a chain effect that lead to the Broncos losing their Pro Bowl quarterback, Jay Cutler. The idea that a GM was willing to risk his franchise to acquire Cassell alone puts a lot of pressure, but then when you add in that the Chiefs are looking for him to help rebuild the franchise. Well, that is enough pressure to succeed in my book.

2. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys, Quarterback

The Dallas Cowboys made a surprising move this off-season by releasing Terrell Owens. The move was supposed to free up Roy Williams and Jason Witten to become the focal points of the offense, but the biggest reason was to allow Romo to take over his team. The Cowboys are great at making excuses for losing, but now T.O. is gone, so the Cowboys can no longer blame him. Thus, Romo will now take the brunt of all judgements. Pressure? Yes, there is pressure.

1. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons, Quarterback

In 2008, not one person thought Matt Ryan would perform as well as he did. In 2009, however, everyone is expecting big things from the reigning Rookie of the Year. The Falcons have put an amazing amount of talent around Ryan. The offense has no weakness, truly it is complete, and if Ryan does not play up-to-par this season, then all of the efforts are for nothing. The Falcons franchise leans fully on Ryan, no matter what anyone else says; it fully comes down to Ryan.

Mike Wallace, wide receiver (draft)

Goal on Offense: To get the ball in "Big" Ben Roethlisberger's hands. Run the ball when they have the lead.

Strength on the Offense: Having an elite quarterback and two Super Bowl MVPs at wide receiver.

Weakness on Offense: Inconsistent play on the offensive line and no deep threat in the slot position.

Goal on Defense: Destroy the quarterback both mentally and physically. Dominate the opposing team's offense.

Strength on Defense: Hands down the best linebacking corps in the NFL.

Weakness on the Defense: Lack of speed at the corner position.

Offseason Methods: Plug in gaping holes but mainly build for two years in the future.

Rivals (Official): Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, and Baltimore Ravens

Rivals (Unofficial): New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, and San Diego Chargers

Best Moment From Last Season: Santonio Holmes' game winning catch in the Super Bowl.

Last Season Ended: Beating the Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl XLIII

Next Season Starts: Tennessee Titans at Pittsburgh for the Season Opener.

Thanks for reading, I would love some feedback.

Simplifying the NFL: Atlanta Falcons Edition

Simplifying the NFL is a little project I am working on. What I'm going to do is quite simple. I am going to basically be making a cheat sheet for every team that I can possibly do.

I decided to start with the Falcons, because, well, they are truly what I know. I hope you enjoy.

Head Coach: Mike Smith

Key Offensive Players: Matt Ryan—Quarterback, Michael Turner—Running Back, and Roddy White—Wide Receiver

Key Defensive Players: John Abraham—Defensive End, Curtis Loftin—Middle Linebacker, and Erik Coleman—Free Safety

Other Important Players: Jerious Norwood—Running Back/Kick Returner and Michael Koenen—Punter and Kick Off Specialist

Young Talent: Matt Ryan—Quarterback, Curtis Loftin—Middle Linebacker, and Chevis Jackson—Cornerback

Players that are not back: Keith Brooking—Outside Linebacker, Michael Boley—Outside Linebacker, and Grady Jackson

New Faces: Tony Gonzalez—Tight End, Peria Jerry—Defensive Tackle (Draft), and Mike Peterson—Outside Linebacker (Free Agency).

Goal on Offense: To run Turner as many times as possible to open up the passing lanes for Ryan and White to attack the offense down field.

Strength on Offense: A Running Back who can carry the ball 30 times in a game as well as a complete wide receiving core.

Weakness on Offense: The age of the center and depth on the offensive line

Goal on Defense: To contain the opposing team's offense and rushing the passer with four down linemen.

Strength on Defense: John Abraham and Erick Coleman Thats it.

Weakness on Defense: The cornerbacks are all extremely young and inexperienced.

Offseason Methods: To get what the team needs. The goal is to only patch the roster up with free agency. The goal in the draft is to fill the biggest need that is evaluated by the team.

Rivals (Official): Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina Panthers

Rivals (Unofficial): Philadelphia Eagles (pending on this year's Bears game, the Bears could join this list)

Best Moment Last Season: Last second miraculous win over the Chicago Bears

Last Season Ended: First Round in the NFC Playoffs to the NFC Champion Cardinals

This Season Starts: Against the Miami Dolphins

Hope you enjoyed this little simplification of the Atlanta Falcons Tell me what you thought. Seriously, I need feedback on this project.

Atlanta Falcons Drafted Competition

The Atlanta Falcons had a solid draft. They potentially drafted two immediate starters in Peria Jerry and William Moore, but what they really drafted this year was competition.

The Falcons had a lot of holes on the defense and they drafted a player for every single hole. Now the picks they made are not necessarily meant to directly fill in those holes on the contrary.

What the Falcons have now is young depth at corner defensive end safety and defensive tackle.

What this depth does more then anything is create position competition. There is no longer a lock on the defensive side of the ball for some players.

I believe this will be seen best in the secondary. Where Thomas Decoud, Jamal Fudge and William Moore will compete for the starting strong safety position. All three of these safeties are hard hitters with good size and a desire for football.

The pick of Moore may just result in one of the three players mentioned above too break out.

Then the corner position. I admit I was against the Falcons drafting a corner, because we already have a truck load of corners on the roster, but the addition of Christopher Owens in the third round was great.

He can provide a big-play threat even though he could be a liability against bigger wide receivers. I could see him fighting for the fourth corner to start and maybe the slot corner later in the year. Again this provides competition which is something you always want on your team.

The Falcons also added to the pass rush rotation. Not only with Jerry, but with Lawrence Sidbury as well. Sidbury can contribute to the rush from the start and was a steal in the fourth round.

I in all truth believe that Sidbury could steal Anderson's job at some point this year. Regardless though of starting he will help the pass rush. While forcing Anderson and Chauncey Davis to either reach their best or to get out of the way.

As a whole I consider this draft a success. The Falcons filled holes and added depth which is all you can every ask from a draft.

Draft Value: Something the Raiders Just Do Not Understand

Al Davis looks pretty angry in the above picture, but he should not be the angry one. The people that should be angry are the Raiders' fans.

Now, I am not a Raider fan, but even I felt ripped off this weekend. I know that this draft has been talked about again and again for you guys. Everyone is saying how stupid the picks were, but they were not stupid picks. The timing was stupid.

With the seventh overall pick, the Raiders selected Darius Heyeward-Bey (I will refer to him as DHB). DHB is a good player—he has amazing speed and has very soft hands. He is definitely a first rounder, but not a top-ten pick.

DHB would more than likely have been available all the way down to probably the 20th or maybe the 25th pick. What that means is that the Raiders did not get the value that their pick was worth.

Crabtree was sitting there, and although I believe they should have taken him instead, the Raiders still should have traded down. To not only get DHB later, which means pay him less money, but also pick up maybe another solid wide receiver or big offensive lineman in the second round.

But no.

So, fine, they really wanted DHB, and maybe they knew something we didn't know—that's fine. The real problem was in the second round pick.

In the second round, they selected Michael Mitchell.

To say that this was a reach would in and of itself be a reach.

Why would a team draft a player who, at best, should have been a fourth-round pick? And even that would have been a stretch. This again shows that the Raiders have no concept of draft value.

For some reason, the Raiders have a skewed view on this. For those who will make the Nnamdi Asumugha argument: By saying that he was a stretch...he was a stretch by about 10 picks, not 200-something picks.

Basically, I am writing this to explain to any Raider fan who is unclear about the picks. These players are good players, but that has nothing to do with why the Raiders had a bad draft.

Frank "The Tank" Summers: What You Should Know

First off, I know that is not Frank Summers above, it is Jerome "The Bus" Bettis. I am using it to make a point. Summers actually looks a lot like that...weird.

Frank Summers comes out of University of Las Vegas or UNLV for short. For those of you who do not know, we do actually have a football team. (I go to UNLV just clarifying) We have had players go to the NFL most recently Beau Bell and Eric Wright both drafted by the Browns.

Only recently did we actually have a legitimate running back here on campus though. Frank is that running back. He gave UNLV a threat on offense that every team needed to account for. Frank scared defensive players, from defensive backs to defensive lineman.

So what does he do on the field? Well he is a big running back who has soft hands who does not shy away from contact. Summers is leader material and will give everything he has every play he can. He is one of those players who gets better as the game goes on.

He led the Runnin' Rebels in rushing yards the last two years and in total touchdowns. He also was the only true consistent weapon that the Rebels had.

Summers fills the void that Gary Russell left. Summers will be able to help in goal line rushes basically from day one, and with his stellar blocking and hands he is a perfect third down back.

Summers is a bruising back, which is something that Steelers have not had since a guy you might of heard of named Jerome Bettis. You will ask how dare I make the comparison. When the truth is how can I not?

Jerome Bettis Frank Summers

Nickname "The Bus" Nickname "The Tank"

Height 5-11 Height 5-10

Weight 255 Weight 243

Style: Punishing Style: Punishing

Hands: Soft Hands: Soft

Hates USC: Yes Hates USC: Yes

The two are very similar in a lot of ways, and well I could not be happier that he landed in Pittsburgh. Now to be clear I am not saying he will be the next Jerome Bettis, but what I am saying is everything is perfectly in place for him to fill those shoes. Also adding a tank to any offense is something that every team should want.

Tony Gonzalez Officially Going To Atlanta

It has become official that the Atlanta Falcons have acquired Tony Gonzalez. This is an amazing move for the Falcons.

They only parted with a 2010 second round pick. The deal immediately completes the Falcons offense, while solidifying up that Pettigrew will not be drafted by the Falcons.

The Falcons have just showed that they may have their eyes set a lot higher then the process. This is not to say they are breaking away from it, but the Falcons offense is now championship caliber.

For those of you who say that a tight end cannot put an offense over the top, well I say the best tight end in NFL history makes every team better.

NFL Common Knowledge: What You Should Know for the Draft

The NFL draft is one of the most exiting times of the year in the NFL. This is the time of year when a brand-new group of players are introduced to the NFL and the futures of teams are determined. One negative though is that the draft really never changes.

The NFL Draft is basically a repeat almost every year. There are players who are guarantees to liken up to the superstar billing (Peyton Manning), and there are guarantees that never develop (Ryan Leaf).

There are also the players that absolutely shock everyone (Tom Brady), but no matter the names or the years, the draft simply does not change.

This is where one can see common knowledge.

NFL common knowledge is something that every team should follow. The problem is that teams are just stubborn and will pay attention to it. So, what is the NFL common knowledge?

Arm Strength

This should not be a driving factor in picking a quarterback in the draft. Having great arm strength is great attribute, but if it is their best quality, odds are they will not turn out to be the quarterback you want. After all you can throw the ball as hard as you want but if it doesn't get to the wide receiver it doesn’t matter.

Injury Problems

This should never be put above talent. Every year there are players who get hurt either during the year of the draft or right before the draft. The media blows the injuries out of proportion while costing the player millions.

What we have learned is that if a player is talented and they show that they have all the abilities you want, an injury should not stop a team from selecting them. After all, most injuries heal.

Position Runs

Position runs in the draft will happen so be ready for them. This is one of the funniest occurrences during the draft. A run is when the same position is taken twice in a row, which then cause every other team looking for that position to trade up to.

Last season this happened with left tackles towards the end of the first round. What this does is screw up the rest of the draft. Players get taken a round earlier then they should, because teams freak out.

40-yard Dash

The 40-yard dash should always be taken with a grain of salt. Basically, the 40-yard dash has no implications on the field. If a player plays fast in games but has a weak 40-time, why would you not think he is fast?

There are players who can run amazing 40 times, but when they are on the field they might not even be close to the fastest athletes. Some will play the Chris Johnson defense, but I say he played that fast on film so regardless of his 40, teams knew he was fast.

Trade the Pick or Take the Best Player

When in doubt either trade the pick or take the best player. Under no circumstance should you take a player just because you are weak at the position. Even if you have to address the position use the value of the pick. The stupidest thing is when teams reach way down to get players even though no one else would take him.

Of course, if every team followed this knowledge the draft wouldn't work. The crappy drafting teams are needed, so that the fast players get contracts. If your team does follow these elements, then congrats. Odds are more often then not your draft classes are good. But if your teams ignore this knowledge, then you might get one starter out of seven picks.

Drafting Zack Follett Could Add To Pittsburgh Steelers' Elite Linebacking Corps

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers easily had the best linebacking core in the NFL. With Larry Foote, two Pro Bowlers in James Farrior and James Harrison, and then two future Pro Bowlers in Lawrence Timmons and Lamarr Woodley, the Steelers were loaded.

They basically had five starting linebackers. But could they add even more quality linebackers through the draft? I mean, we have Bruce Davis, who was our third-round pick from last season who really did nothing last season. Now, I am not saying he will not develop—after all, it was one year—but why not bring in even more competition?

The player I am talking about is Zack Follett out of California. This is a mean linebacker who loves rushing the quarterback and has all of the physical tools one would need to succeed in the NFL.

Follett would obviously not start over any of these linebackers, but could allow for the starters to get extra rest without the defense dropping off. I believe after watching tape on Zack that he could be a backup in all four linebacking spots.

Now I know he is not a complete linebacker, thus he is projected in the fourth round, but for what the Steelers need, he could help out.

Another linebacker that is intriguing is James Laurinitus. I know the Steelers would have to use their first round pick, but he reminds me of a Steeler we have now who is getting up there in age; I am of course talking about Farrior.

Although Farrior is on the books for four more years, we do not know how well he ages. He could very well drop off next season. So I say let us get someone who is a smaller version of Farrior. Laurinitus would benefit from being a backup, for he would have to learn to pass rush better, but I think that with Laurinitus and Timmons in the middle there can be something special.

The Laurinitus part is all hypothetical, but the Follett part is far from. The Raiders and Steelers worked him out, but if he lands in Pittsburgh, getting another mean linebacker in the fourth round may be a luxury that could continue to put the linebacking unit in elite company.

Should We Trust The Atlanta Falcons Process?

For those of you who do not know, I am a huge Atlanta Falcons fan and one of the top writers for the Falcons on Bleacher Report. I am just getting that out of the way so you know that I am in no way hating on the Falcons. So now that you know that, here is what I have to say.

I have read probably over a few hundred articles on the Falcons along with the comments that follow, and well, there seems to be a trend. Almost every Falcon fan is praising the "Process". Almost every single fan I have met and seen has said that they fully believe in the "Process". I just have a question, Why does everyone believe so much in the process?

Why is it that one good season is enough to make Dimitroff and Smith gods or geniuses in the minds of Falcon fans?

I mean that is what has happened. The fans have all joined together and preached the gospel of Dimitroff. I have had people comment on my articles arguing with my thoughts, which is great, then bailing out on the end saying they believe in him.

What the Hell? I am sorry, but there are only three fan bases that can say that they trust their GMs like that. They are the Steelers, Patriots, and Colts fans. Aside from those three, there are no other proven front offices.

Okay I kind of exaggerated, but my point is that the Falcons fan base should not be sold on the front office this much.

Now, do not get me wrong. I am not condemning Dimitroff, because on the contrary, I like him. But I do not fully trust him.

I do think that what he did last season was great and very unexpected. But that was just one year of success. There is no need to take away from the achievement that was last year. Still though just one year.

There is not one GM in the NFL that a fan base should trust after only one year of success. To many times in the NFL we have seen teams come out of nowhere to win 10-12 games one year then 4-7 the next.

I do not believe the Falcons will do that next season, but who knows.

This could be skepticism or maybe I am afraid that the success will fail, but whatever it is, I just do not fully believe in Dimitroff and neither should you.

(I do however believe that he knows what he is doing, I just am not fully sold)

Five Atlanta Falcons To Keep Your Eye On

All this talk about the Atlanta Falcons and the draft is fun and all, but what about the players that are already on the roster. Couldn't they be the solution to some of the problems or maybe they could change the mentality?

Every team has its players that are easily recognized or known by the entire nation. In Atlanta they are Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White, and John Abraham. These, of course, are all stars who deserve national attention, but what about the lesser known players.

Well, here are five Atlanta Falcon players who I believe will change the Atlanta Falcons and some even with the potential of becoming all stars themselves.

Jonathan Babineaux, Defensive Tackle:

Babineaux was one of the most important players on the Falcons defense last season and yet was almost never talked about. Babineaux although a smaller defensive tackle (6-2 284) was able to be quite effective last year with 16 starts, 39 tackles and three-and-a-half sacks.

Now these stats are not eye popping, but that is why he is not an all star. He, however, is quite consistent and vital to the defensive line rotation that the Falcons love to run.

You see the Falcons rotate defensive lineman on a case by case basis. The one thing that all of the line ups have in common is Babineaux.

Some of you will say that why do you think he will be an all star? He is 27 years old if he hasn't already become one the odds are against him.

Well no. This will be his fifth season in the league but only his second year as a full time starter.

I believe that Babineaux will be one of the best defensive tackles in the NFC next year. I could see him posting 40+ tackles and as many as 10 sacks next season. So watch out.

Chauncey Davis, Defensive End:

Davis is another defensive lineman that could help fix the Falcons pass rush. Davis, like Babineaux, is a very underrated player who serves a big role on the defense. Davis is a relatively big defensive end weighing in at 274 pounds and standing six foot two.

Davis has now been with the Falcons for four years. During those four year Davis did not miss one game and all though he only has started 19 he still made an impact.

I believe that the Falcons will start Davis this season over Jamaal Anderson. This is because even though Davis only started one game over the last two years he recorded a combined six sacks, while Anderson started 31 games with only two sacks.

If Davis gets the starting job this year I believe that three parties will benefit from it. First will be Davis himself who will get to reach his full potential after all he is only 26.

Second will be Anderson. With Anderson moving to the second unit the Falcons would be able to move him all over the field and see where he fits in.

Then, last but not least, the team itself would improve. The team could have the pass rush they want.

I could see Davis next season if he starts or not breaking double digit sacks. His techniques have been polished and well he is just getting ready to make a statement.

Michael Jenkins, Wide Receiver:

A young—Yes, still young. I know I was surprised to learn he's only 26—talented receiver who is blossoming before our eyes. Last season Jenkins put up career numbers for receiving yards with 777 yards. This was then 200 yards higher then his former career high.

Jenkins has showed flashes his whole career, but last season was different. He showed that he is a true NFL receiver.

Now don't get me wrong I am not saying Jenkins will be a number one at least not this season, but what I am saying is that Jenkins could be an extremely good number two.

The reason for him developing into a number two is as much his improvement as it is Roddy White developing into a Pro Bowler. Jenkins will see a lot more single coverages, because of all the attention that White requires.

Jenkins could easily break the 1,000 yard mark next year. Especially, because of the development of Matt Ryan.

Jerious Norwood, Running Back/Kick Returner:

Probably the most well known player on this list. Norwood has made a name for himself on the team and even the league as a big play maker.

Last season Norwood compiled 489 rushing yards, 338 receiving yards, and 1,311 kick return yards. Even though that was a career low in rushing yards it showed us that he has the ability to run between the tackles.

Now, that Mike Mularkey has had a year with the team he can formulate some new schemes for certain players. One of those players will be Norwood, so we can expect that not only will Norwood get back to his 07 rushing average (6.0) and truly start making plays.

Last season Michael Turner carried the ball 376 times which is way to many times for a running back. So we can all expect Norwood to get at least 60 or so of those carries which means there is a chance the Falcons could get two 1,000 yard backs.

Now I know that will not happen, but I do believe Norwood is about to have the best season of his career.

Chevis Jackson, Corner Back:

There have been a lot of arguments about the Falcon's corners lately, and well, I am getting a little sick of it.

I do not believe that they will take a corner and Jackson is one of the major reasons why.

Jackson last season showed flashes of becoming a true play maker in the secondary. With limited playing time he amassed 31 tackles and and interception that he returned 95 yards for a touchdown he also started one game, which just so happened to be their best defensive game all year (Oakland 24-0).

Jackson was basically trained to play in the NFL, after all he went to LSU. Next season I could see Jackson beating out Grimes for the second cornerback and even if he doesn't he will be able to dominate in the slot corner position. Three to five interceptions would not surprise me, neither would one or two more then that.

Those are the five Falcons that I believe will not only be better next season, but could be all stars in the future. I am sure you have picks for either you team or the Falcons and I would love to hear them.

Thanks.

NFL Schedule: Prime Time Woes and Solutions

The 2009 schedule has just been released and well there are some problems.

This season the Dallas Cowboys some how have more prime time games then The Patriots, Dolphins, Falcons, Ravens and even The Cardinals.

I know Cowboy fans will say that they deserve it, but (hold on HAHAHAHA) you haven't. The truth is the only teams that deserve five prime time games are The Cardinals, Steelers, Colts, Patriots and Ravens.

Those are teams that will at worst put on a good show and with their credentials should be given more prime time games.

Other teams that do not deserve prime time games: Broncos and Browns

Then there are the teams that were screwed over. The Falcons and The Vikings both only have two prime time games despite there playoff appearances and exiting offenses. These two teams are young and on the rise and should be displayed for the public on the national stage.

Now that you have heard my grievances I will show which games should have been placed in the prime time spots.

If I don't mention a game it means I have no comment on it.

Week 1: Real games: Bills at Patriots and Chargers at Oakland

My games: Dolphins at Falcons and 49ers at Cardinals

Reasons: Bills at Patriots does not have any storyline except the Tom Brady back from injury. While the game I propose would be the Dolphins at Falcons. This game would provide a great show. The idea of the two biggest surprises from last year going head to head to start the season is just amazing.

Reasons: Chargers at Raiders was a horrible game last season when it was in this exact same spot. So truly any game would work here, but because of the time zones I would make it the 49ers at Cardinals. The game would allow for a fun rivalry with two team who have high aspirations for the 2009 season.

Week 2: Although I am against the Cowboys in prime time spots I will let this slide, because this game is normally pretty entertaining.

Week 3: Real game: Panthers at Cowboys

My game: Falcons at Patriots

Reasons: The Dallas Cowboys vs the Panthers would not be a very entertaining match up. The odds say that it would become a defensive struggle. Both Romo and Delhomme will find ways to screw over their teams. While a change to a Falcons vs Patriots game would provide a great series of conversations comparing Ryan to Brady. It would also allow Thomas Dimitroff to show the Patriots what he could have done if they kept him.

Week 4: Gonna be a good week on prime time with Chargers at Steelers and Packers at Vikings.

Week 5: Another good week two solid rivalry games only game I would consider moving would be the Redskins at Panthers, but I will not complain.

Week 6: Fine with this week as well two great rematches from last year and the right stage to do it on.

Week 7: Wow four weeks in a row of quality prime time.

Week 8: Real game: Falcons at Saints

My game: Panthers at Cardinals

Reasons: Falcons at Saints quality match up, but there is a playoff rematch that could have some entertaining story lines. Panthers at Cardinals I like this match up it has two of the best wide receivers in the NFL going head to head. Also even Jake Delhomme will not mess up the same game twice or will he?

Week 9: Real games: Cowboys at Eagles and Steelers at Broncos

My Games: Redskins at Falcons and Texans at Colts

Reasons: Cowboys at Eagles is one of the most over rated match ups. (bring on the hate mail) I say everyone has seen this game at least five times and like me are probably sick of it. So why not bring in a game that happens on average every four years. Redskins at Falcons Get two young quarterbacks into the spot light and well at this point in the season this could be a very important game

Reasons: Steelers at Broncos has the rematch of last years game, but that is about it. The Texans at Colts game could actually signify the passing of the torch. (Not guaranteeing they will, but look out.)

Week 10: Real game: Ravens at Browns

My game: Bills at Titans

Reasons: The Browns do not deserve a prime time game it is that simple. The Bills at Titans game I believe will be pretty interesting. The match up of T.O. and L.E. against the Titans defense will be fun.

Week 11: Real game: Eagles at Bears

My game: Colts at Ravens

Reasons: Good solid game, but the Colts at Ravens has so much potential you have to put it on prime time.

Week 12: Fun week. You got the defenses on Sunday and the offenses on Monday. (Steelers at Ravens and Patriots at Saints)

Week 13: Real game: Ravens at Packers

My game: Eagles at Falcons

Reasons: Ravens at Packers could have its highlights, but the rematch of Eagles at Falcons could be a great measuring stick as to how these teams were last season. While allowing the league to see some good old NFC South vs NFC East.

Week 14: Real game Cardinals at 49ers

My game: Jets at Bucs

Reasons: Well this is kind of a forced move. I already made the Cardinals vs 49ers match up on prime time so I am moving it. I will instead add Jets at Bucs. This game will be a defensive struggle. See I believe although the Bucs are messing with their defense I believe it will still be formidable.

Week 15: I will take it good NFC show downs.

Week 16: Divisional games will be important as the four team will more then likely be fighting for play off spots.

So there you have it, those are the games that I wish were on prime time, but sadly they are not. The good news though is that these games will still occur so keep track of them I have a feeling they will be good.

Tony Gonzalez To The Atlanta Falcons?

There has been recent speculation that this trade might be closer then we all thought. According to ESPN, the Atlanta Falcons may trade their second-round pick for TE Tony Gonzalez.

This article is not saying that this trade is going through, but I am bringing this to people's attention. I will, however, give you some thoughts on the subject.

1. This could put the Atlanta Falcons over the top on offense.

2. Although it appears to be going against the "process," it is in fact what the process is all about. You see, if the Falcons acquire Gonzalez, it could help the "process" by developing the younger talent.

3. The Kansas City Chiefs, Tony's current team, would be able to continue to rebuild their roster with a very decent pick while getting rid of a player who could become a problem if they do not win.

4. Atlanta would heavily consider drafting a tight end in the second round anyway, so why not trade for a Hall of Famer?

The bottom line is that both teams win with this trade, Atlanta completing their offense and the Chiefs continuing their development. I am all for it.

Michael Vick Ruined the NFL for Pat White

In the 2001 draft, there was a freak of nature that every team was drooling over. He was fast, athletic, and could throw the ball as hard as anyone in the league.

The player was selected with the first overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons. This player's name was Michael Vick.

Vick was supposed to be a new kind of quarterback. He was supposed to be a game-changer and for several years he was. But for all his arm strength, Vick was unable to consistently pass with accuracy.

So what does this have to do with Pat White? Everything.

White is short, athletic, fast, left-handed, and non- traditional. He's basically a carbon copy of Vick. And that's is where the problem is.

Vick never became the dominant quarterback that everyone, including the Falcons, thought he would. This is the reason for all of the hesitation on White.

Some are saying White should switch to wide receiver, but why? He found more success at West Virginia than Vick ever did, so I see no reason why he should switch positions.

White started four bowl games for the Mountaineers and won every single one of them. No other quarter back in NCAA history that can claim that feat.

So why are teams hesitating? Because he is not the prototypical quarterback.

White is not the 6'3", 240-pounder that most teams think they need at the quarterback position, which is why they are telling him to move to wide receiver.

There is a big difference, though, between White and Vick.

White is by far the better passer, while Vick is a better runner. White, however, is a better team player than Vick ever was.

I believe White will not get his chance to play at quarterback in the NFL, which is truly sad. He will fall in the draft and be taken by a team that had more than 10 wins last season—a team that doesn't need a quarterback

The Bottom Line:

Vick's inconsistency and trouble with injuries is making every team unjustly hesitate on White.

3-4 Defense: The Two-Sided Sword

Over the past few years, a new trend has been growing in popularity around the NFL: the 3-4 defensive scheme.

The 3-4 defense was created in the late 1940's by Bud Wilkinson at the University of Oklahoma, but it did not reach the NFL until 1974, when Chuck Fairbanks brought it from Oklahoma to the Patriots. The 3-4 defense has been around for over 60 years, yet it was not popular until recently when the defenses of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots implemented the formation.

Since the 2001 season, these two defenses have continually dominated offenses around the league, totaling a combined 182 wins (not including playoffs). These two teams have also won five of the last eight Super Bowls, and as the old adage says, "Defense wins championships."

These two teams have shown that the defense can certainly be effective, but there is a dark side to the defense.

Teams such as the Cleveland Browns and N.Y. Jets, however, have demonstrated how without quality players or coaching, the formation can backfire and be ineffective.

So why is it that some teams can put together amazing rosters while others can't? The answer is simple: without knowing exactly what is needed to make a smooth-running core of players, it is nearly impossible to succeed.

The New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers both scout their players to the highest degree, while still raising lower picks and mid-level free agents to fit their teams' needs. Teams like the Browns and Jets, however, take the best athlete available in the draft, which does not make a defense that is as effective.

This is the doing of the 3-4 defense. The 3-4 can either make a team bring out the best in the available players or destroy them. Some winners aside from the Steelers and Patriots are the Baltimore Ravens (who run a combo of the 4-3 and 3-4), the San Diego Chargers, and the Dallas Cowboys.

The most obvious victims are the Browns and the Jets. There are many more teams that have tried and failed to successfully implement the scheme, but these teams have learned their lessons and since given up hope of using the 3-4.

This upcoming season has another team that will attempt to implement a 3-4, the Green Bay Packers, who will try to move veteran defensive ends to the outside linebacker position. I will now present essential questions about your team's roster that will help you determine if your team will find success with the formation or fall flat on their faces.

1. Does your team have a nose tackle that can handle both a center and a guard?

2. Does your team have a pass rusher on both ends?

3. Does your team have corners who can cover in straight-up man-to-man defense?

4. Does your team have a solid rotation on the defensive line and linebacking core?

5. Does your team have an unselfish roster?

If you answered no to any of these questions, then odds are your team will not find defensive success next season.

Sorry to break the news to you Cowboys, Packers, Browns, and Jets fans. I really am, but for you Steelers, Patriots, Chargers, and Ravens fans, keep up the good work.

What You Don't Know About The Falcon's Draft Plan

I am going to reveal the true draft the Falcons are wishing for this year. Some of it might surprise you.

This year's Draft plan:

With the 24th pick we are looking to select Pat White. I mean Pat White is the next Vick and that worked out so perfectly, why wouldn't we do it again?

Then we will trade away some of our lower round picks, because, well, no one good has ever come out of the late rounds. Right? No no one.

We would then use those picks on a corner which is exactly what we need. I mean we have a corner problem and we know how well rookie corners play; great, that's how they play.

This is a need, because the Falcons don't have a lot of young corners.

So now we have filled two very important needs; back up quarterback and a young corner.

On to the next position, kicker. I think with the next pick, which would probably be in the third round, we should draft a kicker. I mean Elam isn't getting any younger.

Which kicker? Well what about David Buehler. He is from USC which means he knows Pete Carroll. This could give us the inside track in negotiating with Pete in future seasons.

So that is it for the Falcons draft plan.

Are you pumped? I know I am.

Oh before I go there is also a rumor that we might be trying to trade for D-Hall. Wouldn't that be great? I know.

Lakers Debate: Who to Start Lamar Odom or Andrew Bynum

First off, I will say that this is a "problem" that every team in the league would love to have.

But to get to the matter at hand: Now that Andrew Bynum is close to coming back, the Lakers need to figure out who will start.

Both Lamar Odom and Bynum have their claim to a starting spot, but one has a slight edge.

Argument for Odom

Lamar Odom has been very productive since being moved to the starting lineup; I mean, I was inspired to write this article, wasn't I?

Odom has always had the potential to be a star, and although that potential may be fading, who knows how strongly he might play as a Playoff starter?

The truth is that Odom has been very effective and the chemistry between the current members of the starting five is very strong. They have won 25 of the 32 games since Bynum went down, and a large part of that is thanks to Odom.

Argument for Bynum

Andrew Bynum was extremely productive before his injury, and the possibility that he could return with the same power is too tempting to pass.

He awould provide a much-needed defensive presence in the middle.

But to be honest, it's more likely that Bynum will not come back at full strength. On the other hand, he's going need some playing time in order to be ready for the postseason, and starting him might be the easiest way to get him the necessary burn.

Keep in Mind

Bynum starting allows him to use his knee while it is still warmed up from pregame drills.

As the Lakers stand now, they are a game behind the Cavaliers for the best record in the league; would this be the best time to mess with chemistry?

Who Has the Edge?

Andrew Bynum. Bringing him back to the starting line up could allow the Lakers to go over the top.

Not pleased? Well, look at it this way: If this Bynum thing doesn't go as planned, Odom can always be reinserted.

Atlanta Falcons: 2009 Draft Needs, Plans, and More

The NFL Draft is quickly approaching, and well, there are some players and concepts that we should ponder before it takes place.

Last season, we saw the Falcons find three starters in the draft. So what can we expect from them this year?

Well as a fan, we can hope for the same, but who knows.

The Atlanta Falcons, at this point, have the 24th, 55th, 90th, 125th, 143rd, 160th, 196th, and 235th picks.

Positions the Falcons need to address in the draft

Strong Safety: Lawyer Milloy is now gone and at this point the Falcons have no answer for the position.

What the Falcons need at this position is a play-maker. Last season, the Falcons' defense was horrible and couldn't force any turnovers—at least not consistently.

But a playmaker at the safety position could fix this problem or at least help the problem.

Defensive Tackle: Every Falcon fan is aware of Jonathan Babinaeux. But what a lot of people do not realize is that he is a very undersized player.

Then there is the problem of the rest of the poor defensive tackles. The present tackles are either too small or too old. What the Falcons need is a monster in the middle whose best years are in front of him.

Tight End: This is one of the only spots on the offense that the Falcons need to address. Last season, the tight end position in Atlanta was not as bad as everyone thinks.

I am not even kidding, it was arguably decent. You see, just because the Falcon tight ends were not flashy, doesn't mean they were not solid. But there is a need for a pass catching tight end who can attack the middle of the field.

Outside Linebacker: This is a very debatable need. Some see it as something the Falcons do not need to address, while others—such as myself—believe it is the top priority.

The linebacker position is the back bone to basically every defense, and the Falcons are no different. As it stands now, the Falcons have one play-maker at the linebacking core.

The dream linebacking core for the Falcons is to have three very physical athletes. At this point however they only have one.

Defensive End: Another very debatable position. Some still have not given up on Jamaal Anderson, but regardless of your stance on him there is still the problem of a pass rush. Well more lack there of.

Players with trade value

Jamaal Anderson: The last first round pick of the old GM, Anderson has not even come close to meeting the expectations we set.

I do believe, however, that there is some value in him. He would not be able to get us a pick by himself, but he might be able to move us up in the first round.

Jonathan Babineaux: I just heard you say: "this guy is crazy and he has just lost all of his credibility with me."

But wait, just hear me out.

Babineaux is arguably a star in the making. That means this is a great time to move him. I know that sounds crazy, but even if Babineaux does develop into an all star he still will not fit into what the Falcons want a defensive tackle.

Possible trading partners

Denver Broncos: The Falcons have made multiple deals with the Broncos over the years, why should this year be any different?

The Broncos have two first round picks, but more importantly a middle round pick that is in front of the Patriots.

This means that if the Falcons are really that high on Matthews, they could trade their 24th pick and a player for the Broncos pick they acquired from the bears.

Seattle Seahawks: They have so many picks that I could see them making deals all day, so why couldn't the Falcons be one of the teams they deal with.

Every team that picks between 25 and 32 will want the Falcons pick. For there are a lot of good valued players that just do not fit the Falcons needs.

Possible picks

Clay Matthews USC Outside Linebacker: Very athletic linebacker with huge upside and pass rush abilities.

Louis Delmas Western Michigan Strong Safety: Enormous potential, but an enormous draw back as well. He is a little on the small side, but has big play potential.

Alex Mack California Center: Very consistent could start from day one and grow old with Matt Ryan.

Bottom line

The Falcons' draft will be very defensive heavy with a tight end and a lineman thrown in. Any player that the Falcons draft will more then likely be heavily scouted, so the team will know what they are getting.

Jay Cutler is the Missing Baldwin Brother

What am I talking about?

I am talking about Jay Cutler being the fifth Baldwin Brother. That's right folks, you have heard it first right here on Bleacher Report. Cutler is a Baldwin.

The idea to look into this was first brought up by last weeks SNL featuring Alec Baldwin. There was a skit featuring Alec as the fourth Jonas Brother. When I saw this I thought it would be great if there was a long lost Baldwin bother as well.

So I started researching the topic. In the beginning I had nothing there appeared no way I was going to locate him, then it happened.

A young chubby headed quarterback complaining on the news about how he was betrayed. How did I miss this.

Jay fit the "Baldwin Mold" perfectly. He has blue eyes, puffy cheeks, and a double chin. Then when you add in his emotional complex and high pedestal how can he not be a Baldwin.

So I started to look into it and sure enough it is true.

So how does this explain the drama. Well for those of you that don't know the four "well known" Baldwin brothers are all actors. Some obviously better then others, but all actors none the less.

Which means acting is in his genetics. So he used it and I'll admit that although it was not the best acting it did work.

This article was purely written to inform the people of my discovery.

Also, kudos Cutler, or should I say Jay Baldwin. You fooled all of us for many years, but now you have been exposed.

LA Lakers Fans: No Need to Worry

Okay, so the Lakers are on a two-game losing streak, and we are getting close to the playoffs.

This for almost every team is a problem, but not for these Lakers.

These Lakers are loaded with talent and although they haven't showed all of this talent all year it is still there and could come out any given night.

That is not why you don't need to worry, though.

I have two main arguments:

1. The Lakers have the best Road record in the NBA. Which mean that when the Lakers are in the playoffs with the home-court advantage in the west they can sweep every game.

I, however, hope they do not sweep. The reason is like last year in the Finals, finishing early can cause a quite a bit of rust.

2. This is the main reason. How many team have beat the Lakers multiple times this season? Bobcats and Magic? Maybe one or two more.

The Lakers have their off nights, but they will not let a team beat them more then once. The coaching staff is too good and the players are too talented for that to happen this year.

These arguments more then likely will not stop all of your worrying, but I hope it at least gave you some piece of mind.

Atlanta Falcons 2008 Quiz

The season has now been over for a couple of months, so how much of it do you remember? Well, this is a series of questions that will test how well you actually followed the Falcons in 2008. Some will be easy, some will be difficult, but in the end you will know where you stand as far as Falconism. (Made up that word, I know it's bad, don't judge me.)

We shall call these tests "You don't know Jach."

1. Who had the most interceptions in 2008?

A. Dominique Foxworth

B. Chris Houston

C. Chevis Jackson

D. Erik Coleman

2. Which Falcon tandem had the most sacks in 2008?

A. Jamaal Anderson and Chauncey Davis

B. Kroy Biermann and Jonathan Babineaux

C. Jamaal Anderson and Grady Jackson

D. Chauncey Davis and Johnathan Babineaux

3. Who led the Falcons in tackles?

A. Erik Coleman

B. Michael Boley

C. Keith Brooking

D. Curtis Loftin

4. The Falcons ranked ____ in total offense?

A. 15th

B. 6th

C. 8th

D. 4th

5. How many Pro Bowlers did the Falcons Have in 2008?

A. 2

B. 3

C. 0

D. 1

6. Matt Ryan threw _ more touchdowns then interceptions? (Excluding Playoffs)

A. 4

B. 6

C. 1

D. 5

7. How many rookies did the Falcons start on opening day?

A. 4

B. 3

C. 1

D. 2

8. Who of the following coaches is the Falcons defensive coordinator?

A. Brian Van Gorder

B. Emmitt Thomas

C. Terry Robiskie

D. Mike Mularkey

9. How many more wins did the Falcons have in 2008 than in 2007?

A. 9

B. 7

C. 8

D. 6

10. Are you a Fan of the Falcons?

A. No

B. Yes

C. No

D. No

Answers:

1. D. Erick Coleman (3 interceptions)

2. D. Chauncey Davis and Jonathan Babineaux (4 a piece)

3. C. Kieth Brooking (102 tackles)

Atlanta Falcons Draft Analysis: Who Will Be Falcons' First Pick?

Quick note: I will not mention any cornerback in this article. I do not believe that they would take any corner with the first-round pick, it is not a need (that the draft can fill).

The Atlanta Falcons have the 24th overall pick in this years draft. The Falcons are looking to re-work the defense this year after last year's amazing resurgence of the offense.

By that logic, we can guess that the Falcons will pick on the defensive side—or will they? I will go over all of the players I think that the Falcons should consider and from that make my judgement.

James Laurinaitis, inside linebacker, Ohio State:

First, I must say that if the Falcons draft him he would be moved to an outside linebacker position. James is an undersized linebacker who has a mean streak you cannot measure. He is a very instinctive player and more often then not is in the right place at the right time.

James would be a bargain at pick No. 24 The only question with drafting him would be can he make the move to OLB. I believe he can.

Clay Matthews, outside linebacker, USC:

Matthews has everything you would want in an outside linebacker. He can rush the quarterback or drop back into coverage. That is all good, but what I like about him is the fact that he was a walk-on at arguably the best college football program.

This shows that he believes in what he can do and has the ability to show it. Matthews also could jump right into the starting lineup and produce.

Rey Maualuga, inside linebacker, USC:

Another USC product that I could see the Falcons taking. Like Laurinaitis, Rey is an inside linebacker who would have to change, but again I believe he could make the change.

Rey is a true freak of nature. He is basically an angry bull that gets to hit people with no consequences. Could you even imagine being the running back that has to go against both Curtis Loftin and Rey Maualuga. I know, scary isn't it.

Michael Johnson, defensive end, Georgia Tech:

A home town name who can help with a major problem. Johnson can help with the Falcons poor pass rush right away. I mean this kid can pass rush.

He has all of the tools that are needed to be a master at it, but wait. I have heard this before, wasn't it a few years ago this was said about Anderson. Hmm, actually as much as I like Kiper, I am going to have to disagree. We don't need a defensive end this early in the draft.

Brandon Pettigrew, tight end, Oklahoma State:

Easily the best tight end in this year's draft. Pettigrew is the full package. He can catch and block with the best of them. The knock on him is that he is not a game breaker.

Well if you saw the Falcons last season you saw that we do not need more game breakers. Instead, we need more consistent players. If he is there when the Falcons pick will be quite tempting for he would complete the offense.

Ron Brace, defensive tackle, Boston College:

I admit this is kind of a stretch. But he is 6-foot-3, 330 pounds. Those are numbers you cannot ignore. Remember he played along side a very complete tackle in Raji, which is what he would be doing as a Falcon (Jonathan Babineaux).

He would help clog the middle and create a push with Jonathan. I could see him being an integral part of the Falcons D-line rotation.

Louis Delmas, safety, Western Michigan:

Could be a future play-maker for the Falcons. His upside is crazy and his downside is not that bad. So this risk might just pay off. He would be an ideal free safety, but we already have Erick Coleman so he would have to play the strong safety position.

This is only bad for the fact that he is not a big player. Also, the fact that he come from a small school which means he would more then likely not be able to start right away.

Alex Mack, center, California:

The Falcons are young at every position on the offensive line except center. Mack would be able to be in the line rotation while fighting McClure for the starting job. He could make the Falcons O-line not only complete, but elite. He would also give Matt Ryan a chance to grow old with a center of his own. (Peyton Manning and Jeff Saturday)

OK, so I have gone over some of the many players the Falcons could consider at this point in the draft. All have their upsides and downsides. But there is one that if the Falcons have the opportunity cannot afford to pass on. And the pick is: Clay Matthews.

He has everything that the Falcons need. He is not only a dual threat but he is intelligent. I could see him becoming a premier linebacker in the NFL and would love for Atlanta to be his home.

(This does sort of hurt my fandom a little bit. For I am a UCLA fan, but Falcons come first so go Clay.)

Some quick names that I would like to see the Falcons get in the later rounds.

William Moore, safety, Missouri: Big play potential and solid tackler.

Chase Coffman, tight end, Missouri: A solid blocker with soft hands.

Eric Wood, center, Louisville: Solid player that could be molded to fit for Falcons.

What Can We Expect From The Falcons Running Game In 2009?

In 2008 the Falcons ranked second in the NFL in rushing yards, but what can we expect from them in 2009. We can expect nothing less then a repeat of 2008. The roster as far as the running offense goes is perfectly intact. The only thing that really has changed is the age of every player involved.

Their age is both a plus and a minus, but at this stage in all of their careers it is a plus. All of the young linemen and running backs will more then likely improve during this off season and all will have better understandings of their roles.

Those where all generalities that anyone can make. Now let me explain why I am exited about 2009 and why you should be as well.

Lets start with the offensive line. The whole entire line is young with the exception of Todd McClure. Then there is the fact that they are all quite big lineman.

The right side of this line is really the bright side. They have Harvey Dahl and Tyson Clabo reaching new peaks in their careers. Both are 27-years-old which means they could be together for a few more years together and form a formidable duo. Now I am aware both are restricted agents, but I expect that both will resign.

Then the left side. This is the young side with Justin Blalock and Sam Baker. They are 23 and 24 respectively. They will be raised in this system and will continue their maturation process.

Todd McClure is the veteran of the group at 31. He is the leader in terms of emotion. He is at the center position and he is damn good at it.

Then the fullback Ovie Mughelli. He is a basically a brick wall with legs. He can and will open up running lanes by any means necessary. He will throw himself into the hole to create a crease for Turner and CO.

As for the running backs, Turner and Norwood will split the carries next season. They are a good complement to each other, but the main reason for this is because Turner carried the ball way to many times last season (376 carries).

He needs some relief and Norwood will more then likely be that relief. Jason Snelling however might find himself with a few carries as well. He is a weird mix of Turner and Norwood. He has the brute ability of Tuner and the amazing hands of Norwood. So do not be surprised if he gets a few carries.

So now that you know the logistics of the Falcons running game you can plainly see that they will be good for not only next season but for many years to come.

To answer the question though what can we expect from the running game in '09? I would not be surprised if the Falcons rushing yards increased by as many as 300 yards and three touchdowns. They will also lead the NFL in rushing yards by a significant amount.
