Critical Comments From Green Bay? I'll Take My Chances With No. 4

I haven't written any articles for awhile, mostly due to my involvement around Vikings training camp and learning the media side of the NFL.

Now that training camp has subsided in Mankato and the Favre media frenzy has passed, articles and comments from around the national media and on Bleacherreport.com have lit a fire under me.

Media members have seemed to automatically slip the Vikings to third in the NFC North, most notably Sirius NFL Radio host Adam Schein, since the signing of quarterback Brett Favre this off-season.

Then again, I've learned to deal with these sort of comments that seem pretty out there to me.

These people say the Vikings can't win until they bring in a consistent quarterback and when they do, they say it is not the right guy and the team will be penalized for it the upcoming season.

Although they seem to get under my skin, comments from national media are not the reason I am writing this article.

The comments that did came from right over the border in Cheese Land.

I knew the Favre-bashing would come the first few days after his signing from Packer fans, and I can't blame them too much. This was the guy that took their team to the last Lombardi Trophy and was the face of the franchise for more than a decade.

But now they are getting to be too much.

Sports radio, television, blog, forums; you name it, Packer fans are giving their two cents on why Brett Favre is comparable to Satan himself.

Well now, it's my turn.

During Favre's retirement and unretirement in Green Bay after the 2007 season, the part that will never leave my mind is General Manager Ted Thompson making sure Favre never entered the Packers facility when training camp was about to open.

I also remember Favre's family commenting on the organization during this time, saying that it seemed Brett had always been under the pressure to end his time so the young Aaron Rodgers could start a new era in Green Bay.

While I did meet my share of Favre followers who couldn't let go of their hero, I heard a majority of fans saying they were ready for Rodgers to take over, supporting the organization's decision of telling Brett that his time was up.

Now, after one season of seeing their former quarterback in a different jersey and conference while also watching Rodgers play sufficiently for the most part, Favre has done the unthinkable and signed with the Vikings, even undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder to enable him.

And Packer fans from all over are saying that what Brett is doing is terrible, a crime even, and that he will never be liked again.

But wait, weren't these the fans that though it was right to move on without Brett because he had already retired?

Weren't these the fans that said he should stay at home in Hattiesburg, Miss.. on his lawnmower?

Yeah, those ones.

Well, now they see what the one-time Packer has went to. A team that is No. 1 at stopping the run and the best running back in the NFL right behind him when he is under center.

Yeah, I guess you have a right to be angry, only please admit it's out of frustration.

Most of you wanted him gone, and you got your wish behind Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy.

Here's to payback in week four at the Metrodome.

Go get 'em, Brett.

Report: Brett Favre to Stay Retired

Accoding to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, quarterback Brett Favre will stay retired.

The paper reports that they received that decision from Vikings head coach Brad Childress over the phone.

According to the report, Childress reiterated this doesn't change his optimism in the team.

“I just think it was a rare opportunity to explore a Hall of Fame quarterback who had background in the NFC and in this division,” Childress said. “He knows our system inside out … This doesn’t change anything about how I feel about our football team.”

Brad Childress Will Not Pressure Favre to Make Decision Before Camp

According to the NFL Network's Scott Hanson, Vikings head coach Brad Childress will not give quarterback Brett Favre a deadline to decide if he wants to return to the NFL with the Vikings this season.

Favre told reporters a couple weeks ago that he let the team know of his plans by August 30, the day the team reports to training camp in Mankato, Minnesota.

With Childress giving Favre no deadline, it gives everyone the indication of how badly the Vikings staff and front office want the three-time MVP quarterback leading their offense this season.

In an interview today, Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell said the chances of Favre making a return were "50-50." However, he also said it was his gut feeling that with all the work the retired quarterback was doing that he would probably want to return.

Stay tuned for more updates on 24/7 watch of Brett Favre.

Brett's Agent Says Client's NFL Future Still Far From Being Decided

ESPN's Rachel Nichols is reporting from Hattiesburg, Miss. that after talking with agent Bus Cook, retired quarterback Brett Favre is still waffling on the decision of returning to the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings or staying retired.

Reports of Favre's indecision started at the end of last week from Ed Werder, saying the three-time MVP quarterback was "anguished" with his decision after speaking with Cook.

Favre appeared on "Joe Buck Live" in June and made it clear that his arm injury was the largest barrier between him returning to the NFL.

It now appears from various reports and statements from Favre himself that surgery in which a tendon in his right arm was cut has been a success. Now it seems that he may be questioning whether or not he wants to endure training camp and another NFL season.

The Vikings will report to training camp on Thursday and hold their first practice Friday morning. Favre stated weeks ago that he would make a decision on a return by Thursday.

Unless he changes his mind that is.

Report: Vikings Trainer Visits Favre, Surgery Was "Complete Success"

Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that Vikings trainer Eric Surgarman visited retired quarterback Brett Favre in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Wednesday, the second visit this offseason.

Sugarman paid a visit to Favre back in June after he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder to show him some stretches that would help his arm heal successfully.

According to an unnamed Vikings source, the surgery performed around seven weeks ago was considered a "complete success."

This is the just the latest information that points to a second annual Brett Favre unretirement. Many believe that the biggest surprise would be if he decides to not return to the NFL and simply stays retired.

There are only a few events that could happen to stop Favre from signing with the purple. One would be both sides disagreeing on a contract. However, this seems to be unlikely to me due to how much Favre has done to get to this point. He underwent surgery and has been rehabbing to make sure his arm is 100 percent.

The report that there is already a contract agreement in place seems to be likely, pending the health of the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

The second and unlikely event would be Favre changing his mind and deciding to stay retired for whatever reason.

Like the contract, it seems that this also won't be the case because of the work and effort he has done to come this far.

Get ready Vikings country, you're about to get one of the best in the biz.

Report: Brett Favre Puts Deposit on Minnesota Condo

According to a report by Charley Walters of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, retired quarterback Brett Favre and his wife Deanna have put a $30,000 deposit down on a condominium in Edina, Minn., close to the Minnesota Vikings' team facilities.

It seems we who have been following Favre this offseason get a bit at a time, and this is the latest that makes us believe that we will see the future Hall of Fame quarterback leading the Vikings offense this season.

Vikings single game tickets will go on sale July 20, so if Favre does become a Viking, it would most likely happen before that date, as the team would want to sell those tickets fast.

Bus Cook, Favre's agent, will likely be busy this week after his former client Steve McNair was tragically killed this past weekend in an apparent homicide that took place in Nashville, Tenn.

So if we rule out this week and anytime after July 20, next week would be the best bet to put your money on an official Favre-to-Vikings announcement.

Stay tuned for the next clue, purple country.

Former NFL QB Steve McNair Found Dead

News Channel 5 in Nashville is reporting that long-time Titans quarterback, and one-time Raven, Steve McNair has died due to a gunshot would to the head.

Early reports are that the gunshot would was the result of a double homicide.

McNair was drafted by the Houston Oilers in 1995 and played for the Oilers/Titans until 2005 when he was traded to the Baltimore Ravens. He played two seasons in Baltimore before retiring.

According to the report, the incident took place near 2nd South and Lea Ave. in downtown Nashville.

More details will be released later.

Confirmed: Favre Looking for Twin Cities Home

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, it is indeed true that retired quarterback Brett Favre, or at least a someone from his camp, is looking for a place to live in the Twin Cities area.

There had been rumors floating around local and national media that Favre had already bought or leased a home in the Edina, Minn. area and those weren't too far off.

This is just the latest confirmation that points to a Favre return to the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings.

Around a week ago, WCCO's Mark Rosen confirmed that Favre had a deal in place with the Vikings and that he would be at the team's training camp that starts at the end of July.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com had guessed at a Favre signing announcement on July 3, today, but that was with the assumption that Vikings single-game tickets would go on sale July 9.

Single-game tickets actually go on sale July 20, so if we do get the return of a quarterback legend, look for an announcement to come the week before that date.

Jets DE Calvin Pace Suspended Four Games

The New York Jets just got news that will put pressure on Vernon Gholston to step up his game.

Defensive end/outside linebacker Calvin Pace has been suspended for four games by the league for violating it's anabolic steroid and related substances policy.

Pace signed with the Jets in 2008 after playing his first five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

In his first season with the Jets this past season, Pace recorded 80 tackles, 7.0 sacks, and 5 force fumbles during all 16 games in which he started.

In a team-issued statement, Pace said he wasn't intentionally trying to get an illegal edge, but also said he is responsible for this suspension.

"This is a situation that resulted from an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance that I did not know violated the league's policy," Pace said. "I am responsible for what I put into my body and I should have paid closer attention to the league's guidelines.

"I regret that this has happened and apologize to my teammates, the entire Jets organization as well as the fans. Hopefully, this does not distract from our ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl."

Why July 3 Would Be the Perfect Time for a Brett Favre Signing

It seems all is quiet on the Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings issue, for a change.

However, talk that reporters having nothing to write about might just be the calm before the storm that is an official Favre-to-the-Vikings contract announcement.

The buzz is this week might be the perfect time to for the Vikings organization to announce the signing. More specifically Friday, July 3, as Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com mentioned recently when looking over events in the near future.

Florio gave good reasons for this prediction—ones that I could not disagree with because they make very good sense.

First of all, with the news last week that the future Hall of Fame quarterback was in Eden Prairie, Minn. getting his right arm evaluated after surgery in May, many would think that was a good time for the Vikings to end this never-ending story.

There was just one problem.

Head coach Brad Childress was on vacation with his buddy Andy Reid, the head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Childress worked under Reid as the Eagles' offensive coordinator before being hired as the Vikings head coach in 2006.

So that was a good indication that a Brett Favre press conference was not likely.

What about the weekend of July 10?

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that Childress' daughter is getting married on July 11, so don't expect any deal to be reported then. I am sure Cara Childress would never forgive her father for that one.

The team could announce the deal the following two weeks but it is pretty clear that this would not be in the best interest of the organization for two reasons:

1. This would cause a stir in the media too close to training camp. It might be a better plan to get the fireworks over sooner rather than later so players at camp aren't affected (as much).

2. The Vikings single game tickets go on sale in the couple of weeks and the team would rather sell these tickets sooner than later.

So why July 3?

First of all, this is the one weekend Childress will not be in the middle of personal commitments and would have time for a rather large press conference.

If the team doesn't want to create too much of a media uproar, this would be the time to do it as many reporters from various sites will be with their families during Independence Day.

Like I mentioned before, the team's single game tickets will go on sale soon and a signing of the three-time NFL MVP would ensure that those tickets are eaten up by a hungry fan base.

Keep your eyes open this week Vikings fans, there is a good chance you will see more fireworks than just the ones in the sky.

Latest Rumor: Brett Favre Purchases Home in Minnesota

According to many rumors that have floated around the Internet, quarterback Brett Favre has closed on the purchase of a home in Eden Prairie, MN, where the Minnesota Vikings' team facility is located.

No one has been able to confirm that these rumors are true, but many of the latest reports on Favre being in Minnesota to have his throwing shoulder evaluated make them worthy of discussion.

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Favre was spotted at the TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Edina, MN on Monday, where he was reportedly having a doctor look at the arm that he had surgery on during the later part of May.

Previous to that report was confirmation by Mark Rosen of WCCO in Minneapolis that Favre and the Vikings had come to a contractual agreement and that he would report to training camp during the last week of August.

With all of the latest reports, and with the newest buzz that the future Hall of Fame quarterback has bought a home in Minnesota, it may just be a matter of time before Favre is brought before the media holding a purple uniform and is officially named the next starting quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings.

Source: Brett Favre Reaches Contractual Agreement with Minnesota Vikings

According to Mark Rosen of WCCO News in Minneapolis, a top source has told him that quarterback Brett Favre has reached an agreement on a contract with the Vikings and will indeed report to Vikings training camp at the end of July as long as there is no unlikely setback in his throwing shoulder.

The source also said that the Vikings equipment manager was given the green light to produce No. 4 Vikings jerseys for the season.

ProFootballTalk.com wrote a story yesterday on the Vikings and Favre possibly being under contract already and this is just another source that makes it appear that much closer to being official.

Favre's agent, Bus Cook, notified the St. Paul Pioneer Press that there was no agreement in place, but this could mean nothing due to Cook's habit of denying everything related to the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

What I do know is that I have worked with Rosen and he knows the people in that organization quite well.

As SI's Peter King recently wrote, "Get ready for mayhem Mankato."

Brett Favre Not Required To Be Reinstated If He Wants To Return

If retired quarterback Brett Favre does plan on making an NFL comeback to sign with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason, he will not be required to be reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell like he had to be last offseason.

The reason?

When Favre was released off of the reserve/retirement list by the New York Jets in April, the issue of being reinstated did not matter anymore.

“He’s a free agent,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told ProFootballTalk.com in an email response.

There have been many rumors that Favre and the Vikings already have a contract in place and are waiting to break it to the media. This gives that rumor a little more steam.

Stay tuned, Vikings fans.

A Brett Favre Report Straight from Hattiesburg, Mississippi

If you weren't familiar with the National Football League and were driving through the town of Hattiesburg, Miss., you would have no idea that football immortality lived in the vicinity.

Well, I do know the future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre lives there and I have had a wish fulfilled by currently being in Hattiesburg on part of a trip with my dad.

I must point out that my dad wasn't as big on this as I was, he was simply doing it because he wanted to make me happy. He thinks I'm a little crazy for wanting to stop in Hattiesburg, which I might be, but its a story I have been following everyday and to see the sights in person would be something very unique.

Thanks to Garmin, we were able to find Oak Grove High School, the school where Favre has been doing his training throughout the offseason, throwing passes to test his arm strength. The latest thought is that Favre will sign with the Vikings if his arm is okay, and many have reported that it is.

The field was empty at approximately 5:45 pm local time, with only drill equipment being on the hot turf. Like us, another car was checking out the scene but left as soon as there was not too much to be seen at the moment.

Now, it was put in place that we must see his home. However, there was one problem. Garmin does not list Brett Favre's house in it's system, not even under points of interest.

Well, this was my only interest and I wasn't going to be stopped.

Next destination, the Microtel down the road, our spot to stay for the night. My dad checked in, found out that internet was free (makes this article possible right now) and asked about Favre's location in the city.

"Everyone knows where Brett Favre lives," the front desk worker said and gave us the directions, which were pretty simple. Drive to the high school, but instead of turning off of the highway, drive another three miles.

We took the directions, thinking many gated areas might be his place, but not being confident in our guesses. Finally, we saw a nice fence and a big gate that we knew had to be it the second we saw it. Sure enough, a big "F" was on the gate. Somebody driving along would not be able to see the house because it is tucked away behind trees.

Last night, I did some research and came to the conclusion that most of Favre's high school workouts took place in the morning.

My alarm rang today at 7:00 am this morning (Monday) and we made our way over to Oak Grove High School for the second consecutive day.

My excitement grew when I saw players on the field doing some sprints. As we made our way to the gate, a man who worked at the school told us that Favre usually worked out on Wednesdays.

Well, there went that idea.

Of course, I had to ask him about Brett's work and how he was looking on the field.

"He says it hurts, but he knocks those kids right into the ground on those 20 yard passes. It doesn't look like he's hurt," the man said.

This would make sense after the Oak Grove Head Coach make comments similar to this statement this weekend on Sirius NFL Radio.

Although I did not get to see the legendary quarterback, I did get to see much of the setting that had only been a television sight for me the past two offseasons as I have followed Favre's situation.

It was well worth the trip there and although I did not see Favre in person, my guess is I will see him in a different setting later on.

That being in a purple jersey on the Metrodome turf for the 2009 NFL season.

Summarizing Brett Favre's Interview With Joe Buck

Finally.

We now know what's on Brett Favre's mind after the media had been our only means of communication on what was going on from his camp.

Favre sat down with Joe Buck on "Joe Buck Live" on HBO Monday night, in the show's debut.

Buck started with the most obvious question, is Favre considering coming back to the NFL? Bet you are shocked to hear that he answered, "Maybe."That seemed to get quite a bit of laughter from the crowd gathered to watch in studio.

Favre then followed that up with a, "Yes. I am considering it." He was then asked by Buck about surgery and the three-time MVP quarterback confirmed that he indeed had the operation.

"About 2 1/2 weeks ago I had surgery," Favre said. "Dr. [James] Andrews did the surgery and he said more or less, ‘Four, five weeks you should know if it was completely successful.’ I can throw and I could throw before the surgery. But I couldn’t throw…and that’s what happened to me late in the year. I would throw it there and it would go there."

As for contact with the Vikings, Favre also confirmed that, along with talking about the health of his arm.

"I knew I needed surgery and I didn’t want to have it and I ended up having it," Favre said. "If it feels better, I’m rehabbing, doing what I need to do to get it back in shape. Have talked with the Vikings. Nothing other than, ‘Are you interested?’ Vice versa. I’ve had the procedure, which they know and it’s more or less how my arm feels and we’ll go from there."

With all of the reporting and rumors that have been flying around, it was nice to finally get a confirmation from the man himself.

Buck asked about the latest report saying that Vikings coaches had traveled down to Hattiesburg, Miss. to talk with him and check on his progress.

"Not true," Favre said intently. "I met with their trainer yesterday and all it was about was to go through some exercises that could help with the rehab. That was it. Different stretching and band work."

When asked if the Vikings were the only team on his radar, Favre said it was and talked about the most helpful perk of going to Minnesota, the offensive system.

"That’s all I’ve talked to, yeah," he said. "It makes perfect sense as far as coming back because it’s an offense that I ran for 16 years. I could teach the offense."

He then elaborated on the offense and also commented on the strong running game that the Vikings have.

"It’s like the terminology with the offense," Favre said. "It makes a lot of sense because the pieces are in place. They do have a great running back, they have a great running game. If I go there, I mean there’s no guarantees. We all know that. I went through that last year with New York."

That is when his comments got interesting. When referring to the Vikings and the offense, he used "we" and not "they." It seems like we have another statement from Favre where three or fewer words can change the whole meaning.

"I think every player should think that he’s a difference maker," he said. "I think you have to believe that. I think in that situation understanding what is expected of you, knowing your team, knowing that as long as we can run the ball and complete passes when needed we should be pretty good."

As far as him signing with the Vikings, the key is his arm and it's health.

"I think first and foremost, I don’t think you can go past anything more than the arm," Favre said. "If that’s not up to par, and it’s not up to par when the time comes, then I can’t play. I went through it last year and I’ve gutted it out or whatever but it affected me and it affected our team and I don’t want to do that again and I won’t do it again."

"So that was why I went ahead and had the surgery. I didn’t want to wait and wait for this tendon to pop or whatever and be mid-season, then it’s too late. So I had the procedure done. As I rehab and continue to throw and things, if it ever gets to the point where it feels like it did before it started hurting, then that…the biggest question mark is out of the way."

Then Favre did his best at proving the media's reports wrong again, this time touching on the deadline that head coach Brad Childress had reportedly set for Favre on making a decision last week on whether or not he was coming back.

"No. It’s not like I’ve talked to those guys every day," he said. "They knew I had surgery. Coach Childress had asked if I would come to OTAs. Not that I would have to participate and I totally understood that side of it."

"I chose not to and you can pick sides on this and I think both sides are right. He wanted me to be there to be a part of the team and things like that, knowing that there’s not guarantee my arm will be like it was before."

So why did he not show up at the organized team activities that Childress wanted him to attend?

"I chose to stay away because I figured there would be a media frenzy if I was there and there would be a media frenzy if I couldn’t play, if we had to say three weeks later, ‘You know his arm is just not up to par, he can’t play so we have to …’ I said, ‘Why not just have one media frenzy?’ And that would be later on. But it wasn’t anything to do with practicing or anything like that. It’s either all or nothing to me."

Buck brought up former Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton and his comments on Favre, which included that he wanted Favre to fail if he came to Minnesota. He also asked about the fans of Green Bay and if he thought his legacy has been tarnished to his indecisions on coming back to the NFL.

Favre said that Tarkenton hasn't been the only person in his life that has wanted him to fail at playing, and there is nothing he can do to change that.

"I think the 16 years that I spent in Green Bay speaks for itself," he said. "This whole process and what’s happened in the last couple of years—and I was talking to Chad [Johnson] backstage just a little while ago—and I truly believe this."

"There are those people who are in your corner no matter what, you can’t do any wrong, even when you do wrong. And then there are those people that no matter what you do they are going to dislike you and that’s not going to change. And then there are the rest that don’t give a shit."

Asked if Favre could still do it physically, he admitted that he had his doubts. He also brought up his family and the role they play in his decision making.

"At 40 years old, which I will be in October, we’re not getting any younger," he said. "And believe me, I wake up every day and I go, ‘Why am I even thinking about playing?’ Obviously things that you think about at 39, you didn’t think about at 25, even at 30."

"Obviously, I have a family and as much as I ask them what I should do, I get the same response, ‘Whatever you want to do dad.’ I’m like, ‘That’s not what I wanted to hear.'"

One of the final questions asked by Buck was what Favre thought about wearing a Vikings jersey into Lambeau Field and the fans reaction to that. He said that he wouldn't be the only famous Packers in franchise history to leave Green Bay and head somewhere else.

"I don’t know what to tell them," he said. "Vince Lombardi went to the Washington Redskins when he left. His name’s on the [championship] trophy. We give that trophy out every year. I don’t hear too many people saying, ‘That damn traitor, he went to Washington.’ Time heals a lot of things and I have nothing but the highest regard for Green Bay and I mean that sincerely.

"Did some things happen there that may have ruffled the feathers for both sides? Yes. But, once again, the 16 years I spent there you can’t take away. I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world."

"They chose to go in a different direction and that’s OK. I chose to play again and that’s OK. Just because I had former players, friends of mine, I had family, I had friends that said, ‘I can’t picture you playing anywhere but Green Bay. I can’t do it.’ It’s football. It’s not life or death."

So, where does that leave Vikings fans and the Vikings organization?

Well, the future Hall of Famer pretty much summed it up: If his arm heals like it is supposed to, he will most likely sign with the purple for the 2009 season.

It has to be a relief to fans to finally hear him speak and he gave us some good information on Monday night.

So as Favre continues to rehab his throwing shoulder, be prepared to stay patient. This story will probably wind into July.

After all, straight stories from Brett Favre would just not be norm.

Brett Favre To Appear on "Joe Buck Live" Monday Night

The silence of retired quarterback Brett Favre throughout the offseason will end on Monday night when he will do a live interview on "Joe Buck Live" at 8 p.m. CT on HBO.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that the interview will take place—one that Vikings fans will be sure to catch.

In recent weeks, Vikings head coach Brad Childress has come out to say that the team is interested in taking a look at the future Hall-of-Fame quarterback, who has reportedly had surgery to release a tendon in his right arm to relieve the pain and help him come back for a 19th NFL season.

However, Favre has not said anything to the media since the rumors started. His only communication has come from his agent, Bus Cook, who has basically given nothing to fans with his statements.

Many have thought the only barrier between Favre and a comeback with the Minnesota Vikings was the health of his shoulder. The surgery was reportedly done approximately two weeks ago, and from reports, rehab for a surgery like this takes around 6-8 weeks to complete.

The most recent news came on Saturday when it was reported that a trainer and coach from the Vikings organization would head down to Hattiesburg, Miss., Favre's hometown, to check on the quarterback's progress with healing his shoulder.

So, with all of the news and rumors floating around, Favre will finally speak to the NFL world and tell them what is on his mind.

This should be the best indication we get on his future, so tune in.

Brett Favre and Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress Talked Last Week

Thursday's practice was the only one open to the media at Vikings headquarters in Eden Prairie, Minn., and head coach Brad Childress most likely knew the Brett Favre patrol would be out and about, waiting to jump on every word he said during interviews.

Childress did admit that he and the retired quarterback talked at some point last week, but would not elaborate on what they talked about. He was also asked if he plans on watching Favre throw the ball at any point in the near future.

"That’s down the road stuff," Childress said. "The guy is retired right now and you’d have to talk to him about that."

Is Favre a distraction to the team? Childress said he believes he is just another player the team looks at in order to possibly make the team better.

"All you’re ever looking for is every day when you check the waiver wire, wherever you’re looking, wherever there are players that can make this roster one person better," Childress said.

"We look at that every single day and everyone is a completely different situation."

Childress also said he has watched film on the three-time MVP quarterback, just like he does with every player the team could be interested in.

"Somewhere I saw him on tape, throughout the course of the year, and obviously I know how he was throwing it early and how he was throwing it late," he said. "Just like you evaluate all players that go to the waiver wire. How much film did we watch? I don’t know. Four or five games."

Childress was also asked again about current Vikings quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. He said that Favre is never a subject that is brought up between them.

"I really don’t talk to them about Favre," Childress said. "Those guys play football and I coach football and look at personnel, as I mentioned before. So they’d be out of their lane and I’d be out of my lane in sharing any of our business."

"Whether it be surgery, injury, talking about other players. We just don’t do that. It’s more of a coaching relationship."

Jackson also spoke to reporters, and said that this type of baggage comes with playing quarterback in the NFL.

"If you had to hear it year in and year out all the time, eventually you’re going to be tired of it," Jackson said. "But I guess it just comes with being the quarterback for the Vikings right now. It is what it is."

My personal favorite quote of the day from Childress came when he was asked if he thinks Favre could still be a great quarterback.

"[I] don’t know, [I] don’t know," Childress said. "Stay tuned."

The Vikings will wrap up organized team activities on Friday. The team was scheduled to practice on Monday and Tuesday, but Childress canceled those plans. That is not a surprise as he usually does not use all 14 sessions that the league allows.

So as the Favre situation picks up, follow Childress's advice and stay tuned.

Brad Childress Calls KFAN Sports Radio, Says There Was No Brett Favre Deadline

Vikings head coach Brad Childress finally came out with something to say about the Brett Favre situation on Wednesday morning, when he himself called into the "Power Trip Morning Show" on KFAN Sports Radio in Minneapolis.

The most interesting comment? There was no deadline for Favre, as ESPN.com had reported on Monday.

"Absolutely not, there was no deadline," Childress said. "Maybe by [Favre’s wife] Deanna or somebody like that, but certainly not from me. Not even close. Don’t know where that would have dropped out of the sky from."

"I don’t know how you guys in that industry go about your sourcing, 'a source says that a source says,' I don’t know, it’s questionable, very questionable."

When asked about the organization resuming their pursuit of the retired quarterback after the report came out Tuesday night that they "suspended" their pursuit, Childress wouldn't give anything away.

"I don’t know, I’m not into predicting the future," Childress said. "We’ll just have to see what’s around the corner tomorrow."

What we do know is that Childress has always been a fan of Favre and the way the three-time NFL MVP has played the game.

"My opinion is that he was a great player," Childress said. "He obviously had a setback last year. He was playing very well early. If in fact he’s had that surgery, I’m anxious to see just exactly what he’s got left in that cannon because he had a pretty good arm as we know."

When the show's hosts asked about the quarterbacks currently on the roster and how they were going about their work with all the speculation surrounding them, Childress said they control what they can and get better in any way they can.

"I’m not worried about that. I talked with Sage and Tarvaris. They are competitors. Do they like any of the conversation? Absolutely not. But they know this. I’m charged with adding and subtracting players from this team to make us better," Childress said.

"Every day when I walk in this office there’s not a day that I don’t try to look and see if we can get better at some position. And if this is going to make us better down the road and it’s got a chance to happen I’m going to take care of the Minnesota Vikings."
Childress was also questioned as to why he and the Vikings organization have not clarified more about the situation to the media and the fans.

"I really don’t clarify things that are incorrect because I literally could stand at a press conference all day long and clarify," he said. "It’s really not my job to comment on erroneous things.

"I don’t have time to do that. I can sit and laugh at it and wonder how responsible that is. I simply don’t have time to do that. I’m on my way driving into work here so I’m captured here, but when I get done with this I’m done."

Childress was also questioned as to whether it would be hard coaching Favre due to his significant attention to detail and the future Hall of Famer wanting to do things his way much of the time.

"I think it’s more of, just like you talk about with a quarterback, can he manage a game?" Childress said. "I think it’s more about that. And then you letting him know your expectations and how we’re playing the game here and what we value here.

"Those are different virtually everywhere you go and every system you play in."

The Vikings will continue their organized team activities on Wednesday. The week's practices will conclude on Friday.

Steve Mariucci: Favre Intent On Playing For the Vikings This Season

According to Jim Corbett of the USA Today, former NFL head coach and friend of retired quarterback Brett Favre, Steve Mariucci, told the paper that Favre has some business to take care of and definitely would love to play in Minnesota this season.

Mariucci and Favre go back to their time with Green Bay when Maricucci was an assistant and Favre was the team's starting quarterback.

"Often times, there's a little bit of unfinished business," Mariucci said. "Even though Brett's done all those Hall of Fame things with winning a Super Bowl, winning three MVPs, going to all those Pro Bowls and setting the records he has, I think there's a part of Brett that wants to do more.''

Mariucci said that his communication with Favre is confidential, but says that his decision on whether or not to come out of retirement for a second consecutive season is a decision he is still torn on.

"I talk to him every now and then,'' Mariucci said. "Some of the things we talk about are confidential. All I can say is this is an ongoing decision for Brett and the Vikings.

Mariucci told the newspaper that Favre's wife, Deanna, supports her husband's decision to come back to play in purple.

The two main points that will help that decision according to the former head coach are the health of his arm that he recently had surgery on and the type of contract that could get done between him and the Vikings.

Overall, the three-time NFL MVP is just concentrating on getting his throwing arm back to one hundred percent according to Mariucci.

"The main thing is Brett feeling good enough to perform well with the shoulder. That has yet to be determined.''

Favre's Family Books Hotel Rooms for Vikings-Packers Game

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, retired quarterback Brett Favre's family members are preparing for the three-time MVP to make a return to the NFL again as a Minnesota Viking.

Around two months ago, a member of the family booked 25 to 30 rooms at the Midway Motor Lodge, a hotel near Lambeau Field, for the Nov. 1 game in which the Vikings visit the Packers.

Although much can be read into this, the report also states that the hotel lets a person cancel the reservations 45 days in advance of the stay with no financial penalty.

The fact is, this could just be a couple of family members who want to prepared in the case Favre ends up in purple.

It has been reportedly recently that the future Hall of Fame quarterback underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder to release a tendon that was partially torn last season when he played for the Jets.

The surgery was done to totally release the tendon, easing the pain in his arm. This suggests that Favre could be serious about his return to the NFL.

The Vikings started their organized team activities this week and will continue through Friday.

Who wants to bet somebody will ask Vikings head coach Brad Childress a question regarding Brett Favre this week?

Sources: Vikings Want Favre Decision This Week

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder, two sources have confirmed that Vikings head coach Brad Childress wants a decision from retired quarterback Brett Favre on if he will come out of retirement to sign with the Vikings or stay retired.

On Sunday evening, the report came out that Favre had recently undergone arthroscopic surgery on his right arm, showing that he is serious about un-retiring for a second consecutive season to play in Minnesota.

According to the report Sunday, Favre was throwing but his arm did not feel "100 percent." Sources close to him have said he is reluctant to come out of retirement if his arm's health does not make significant progress in the future.

Favre came out of retirement last season to play for the New York Jets but was injured during the final part of the 2008 season. A ligament in his right arm suffered a partial tear, making it painful to throw the ball.

According to many medical experts, the ligament being totally torn would eliminate the pain, hence the reason Favre underwent the surgery last month.

The Vikings will hold organized team activities starting on Tuesday that will run through Friday. Check back for updates as news from the Brett Favre saga is in the near future.

Minnesota Vikings Great Ron Yary: Favre Would Have Brought Team Championships

Hall of Famer Ron Yary, who played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1968 to 1981, has thrown in his two cents regarding retired quarterback Brett Favre.

In Yary's opinion, the Vikings would be displaying some Lombardi Trophies at Winter Park if Favre had been their quarterback when he played. He recently told the St. Paul Pioneer Press his thoughts on the former MVP quarterback.

"If the Vikings would have had Brett Favre during the time of my career, we would have been 7-0 in Super Bowls. Absolutely," Yary said.

Yary said he isn't the only Vikings offensive star who loves what Favre has done on the field. Former Vikings offensive coordinator and head coach Jerry Burns, who was known for his great offensive mind, told Yary that he considers Favre the best quarterback of all time.

"In 2000, I had dinner with Jerry Burns in Washington, D.C., and I asked Jerry who he thought was the best quarterback of all time," Yary said. "And before I even got the sentence out of my mouth, he said, 'Brett Favre.'"

"It's easy to draw a play based on defensive schemes," Yary said. "But a great coordinator can take the best skills of their players and incorporate that into their offensive scheme or defensive scheme.

"That's what makes a coach a great coach. Jerry Burns was able to do that with every quarterback he coached, as well as every other player on the offense. So I respect Jerry's opinion of Brett Favre as being the best who ever played the game."

Because of all that he has done as a player, Yary thinks Favre should have the right to do as he wishes.

"Brett Favre has played great football for many years, and at 39 years old, because of all the great things he's done for Green Bay, and that he's at the end of his career, he should have the right to decide when he wishes to leave and how he leaves football, and the right to talk to who he wants about it," Yary said.

It was reported Sunday evening that Favre had surgery last month on his throwing shoulder to cut an injured tendon. The injury occurred last season when he was with the New York Jets.

According to various reports, the partially torn tendon in his right arm was causing the pain, but the release of the tendon could eliminate that and help him recover.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that Favre was still testing his arm and that it wasn't close to 100 percent yet. It generally takes six to eight weeks to recover from that type of surgery.

Still, it is easy to say that the three-time NFL MVP wants to return to the league if he can get his arm in proper condition.

The Vikings will run another organized team activities session from Tuesday through Thursday. The team also has OTAs scheduled for next week, but head coach Brad Childress has been known to cancel those practices as a reward to players for their work in previous sessions.

Five Things Benny Sapp Must Do to Win the Minnesota Vikings' Nickel Job

This is a multiple-part series in which I will be breaking down Vikings position battles, highlighting what players need to do to win their respective starting positions in 2009.

Vikings cornerback Benny Sapp seemed to fit in well his first year under defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier's scheme, making a few big plays as well as being a nice addition to the defense on sure passing downs.

However, when asking fans about what they remember most about Sapp's first year in purple, they will complain about the penalties he committed when the Vikings absolutely could not afford them.

This summer, Sapp will compete with Karl Paymah, Charles Gordon, and rookie Asher Allen for the team's starting nickel back job for the 2009 season.

Although he has plenty to work on this off-season, he also has an advantage over Allen and Paymah due to having one year of experience in this defense.

These are five things Benny Sapp must do in training camp to win the starting job and play along a very talented Vikings secondary heading into this season.

1. Eliminate the Penalties

In my opinion, more people would be on Sapp's side right now heading into the season had it not been for a couple of very unintelligent penalties he committed in 2008 in very big games.

The first was in a week 13 Monday night game when the Vikings hosted the Bears in a game with first place in the NFC North on the line.

In the second quarter with the Bears up 7-3 and driving, it appeared that the Vikings defense had made a key stop on a third down.

But after the play, Sapp hit Bears wide receiver Rashied Davis in the helmet and was flagged for unnecessary roughness, giving Chicago a first down.

Luckily for Sapp, the defense made a goal line stand at the conclusion of the drive and on the next play, quarterback Gus Frerotte hit a wide-open Bernard Berrian down the left sideline for a 99-yard touchdown in what turned out to be a Vikings win. Whew.

The next week at the Detroit Lions, with the Vikings up 10-6 and trying to hold on to first place in the NFC North, the Minnesota defense was again hurt by a holding penalty on Sapp after stopping the Lions on a third down in the third quarter.

On the next play, Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper fired a 70-yard touchdown to Calvin Johnson to put the Lions on top.

Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson came back with a touchdown pass to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe in the 4th quarter as the Vikings won 20-16.

This summer in camp, Sapp will need to show in scrimmages that he won't commit silly penalties in big situations. Teams always have officiating crews come in to watch for penalties and look for him to not raise the awareness of the men in stripes.

2. Control Emotions

If you read my article on what Charles Gordon needed to do to win the starting nickel job, you noticed my reference to his injury that was popular on YouTube.com.

Well, you can definitely say the same for Benny Sapp, who at times has let his emotions get the best of him.

When you type in his name, you will find a video titled, "Benny Sapp Goes Postal," in which Sapp is furious on the sidelines with teammates after being called for a personal foul.

Although no incidents took place with teammates in 2008, penalties like the one against Chicago that I mentioned in point No. 1 are bound to happen more if Sapp can't hold his emotions inside.

Having a season under his belt will now help this. Frazier, along with head coach Brad Childress, have seemed to develop a nice core of disciplined players. Look for Sapp to take a more mature role in 2009.

3. Capitalize On Opportunities Given

One play that makes me cringe more than any other during the 2008 season was a play in week 10 against the Packers at the Metrodome.

Sapp was filling in for Gordon after he went down with a gruesome ankle injury he suffered while returning a punt earlier in the game.

Green Bay had the ball at about their own 10 yard line. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw a pass over the middle that was tipped by linebacker Ben Leber and fell right into the arms of Sapp, who had a sure pick right in his hands.

However, he failed to concentrate on the ball as it feel right through his arms and into the field turf.

Talk about a play that makes a defensive coordinator grimace.

With even more competition for Sapp this summer at training camp, he will need to hold on to every ball he has a chance at.

Like many say, football is a game of turnovers. If Sapp can't make the play when he has the chance, Frazier and company will find the guy who can.

4. Step Into a Leadership Role

Sapp seemed to be the little brother of the cornerback group last season, it having been his first season wearing purple.

With a free agent in Paymah that is a couple years younger and a rookie in Allen, Sapp could prove a lot to coaches with his knowledge and leadership this season.

When the younger corners on the team have a question, he will need to help them out no matter if it's on the field or in the film room.

When watching Benny Sapp in practice this training camp, watch his communication with the guys around him.

While learning from some solid corners in Cedric Griffin and Antoine Winfield (assuming there is no contract dispute), he will need to be a teacher as well.

5. Do Not Gamble When It's Not Necessary

When Sapp took over for Gordon after the injury in 2008, he seemed to play well in the slot on quicker receivers.

However, when watching him on film, it seems Sapp likes to gamble on passes a lot. Now, sometimes gambling pays off for defensive backs and it did at times for the 5-year corner.

The part I did not like to see was when the Vikings defense faced some long yardage situations and Sapp took some chances that cost them some big chunks of yardage.

In camp, look for Sapp to give more cushion on wide receivers when the offense is trying to get 15+ yards.

I am not saying he needs to lighten up on jumping routes, just that he needs to be award of when he is doing it and not letting the offense pick up first downs that they had no business converting in the first place.

Vikings' Camp Review 5/31: Childress Disguised; Johnson Keeps Learning

Vikings head coach Brad Childress, who many think of as a boring, monotone kind of guy, proved that he actually might have a sense of humor during Vikings mini-camp practice on Sunday.

And if he does, it's an interesting sense of humor.

Childress sported a visor and also a wig that resembled spiked brown hair, making him look like a different person. He addressed the media after practice.

"There’s a bunch of those guys who walked up and had no idea who [I was],” Childress said. "My wife tells me all the time, it’s the bald head that gives you away. Put a hat on."

He said his wife Dru-Ann purchased it for him when she was in Florida. This isn't the first time he had fooled players and others in the football world.

"I wore it to the Senior Bowl with a little bit of a beard and some sun glasses," he said. "I looked at probably 15 people that I know pretty well in the face and was able to fool them. They didn’t know who it was. Including members of my staff."

But the practice portion of the day was all business.

Second-year center John Sullivan is impressing coaches with his play during this weekend's mini-camp session. He will definitely be under the microscope this year if he is the starter after six-time Pro Bowl center Matt Birk signed with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that just because Sullivan has a different body type than Birk, it doesn't mean he can't play at a high level.

"I'm not saying he hasn't handled himself well (physically), because he has," Bevell said. "I just think it's pretty easy mentally for him."

Quarterback Sage Rosenfels also agreed with Bevell on Sullivan's mental advantage.

"He's a very, very smart guy," Rosenfels said. "He grew up (with a) silver spoon in Greenwich, Conn., so they have a pretty good public-education system there."

Another second-year player that will likely become a starter this year is safety Tyrell Johnson, who will take over for veteran Darren Sharper after he signed with the New Orleans Saints in March.

Although many have written him in as the starter going into 2009, Johnson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that he still must earn his job in practice.

"I see it as being in a competition," Johnson said. "Everybody tells me, you're the starter, don't get a big head. It's impossible for me to get a big head because I always feel like I have something to prove. I always view myself as the underdog. I always feel myself needing to do better than the next guy."

"I know it's not an individual game, but I feel like if there are 11 individuals on the field, shoot to be the best individually and collectively we'll be good also."

Starting opposite of Johnson this season will be veteran safety Madieu Williams, who attended the team's organized team activities two weeks ago so he and Johnson could work on feeling each other out.

Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier says it is not only important for them to be able to communicate with each other, but it is important for the success of the whole defense.

"We count on those guys to be able to communicate and get information to our corners and also help our linebackers with some information," Frazier said. "To get those two working together is extremely important. It takes a lot of time and a lot of repetition."

The Vikings wrapped up their first mandatory mini-camp on Sunday. The team will next hold an OTA (organized team activities) session on June 2 that runs through June 5.

Vikings Mini-camp Review 5/30: Peterson Praises Harvin; Murphy Adjusts

Saturday meant imagination and excitement for the Vikings offense, as offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell implemented some "wildcat" plays into practice for rookie wide receiver Percy Harvin.

This shouldn't be surprising, considering Harvin's speed and explosiveness. The wildcat offense consists of Harvin lining up next to a quarterback or running back out of the shotgun and running draw plays or handoffs to confuse the defense.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Bevell said the offensive changes will grant players the opportunity to use their best abilities.

“We’re up there trying to diagram everything we can,” Bevell said. “We’re looking at things we do, we’re looking at things other teams have done and trying to get the ball to our playmakers.”

Harvin agreed when asked about using the wildcat at the University of Florida, saying he had success with the formation because it lets him use his explosiveness.

“I did that a lot," Harvin said. "That is a lot of my versatility. They put that in now and we’re kind of working that with me and a couple of the other running backs.”

Along with practicing the wildcat formation, Harvin also impressed with many nice catches over the middle. He did say that it was a bit overwhelming with everything that was going on during practice.

They just want me to learn multiple positions," he said. "We don’t know quite where I’m going to play right now. I’m just learning kind of a little bit of everything. I’m just working hard and whatever they need me to play, that’s what I’ll do.”

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is also quite impressed with the young rookie and the way he plays the game.

“We’re throwing in some new plays and different looks out there," Peterson said. "I know that guy is exhausted because I’m exhausted for him— all the running around he’s doing. He’s a tremendous athlete, and he has a lot of ability.”

Peterson is also quite excited about some heat being taken off of him with the addition of Harvin.

"When you have guys out there with speed running around in different formations—you’ve got running backs out wide and motioning across and things like that— (defenses) are really going to have to be on top of their game," he said.

The offense is not the only unit making adjustments. The special teams unit has taken a cue from the new NFL rule that only allows a maximum of two players on a wedge during the kick return. New special teams coordinator Brian Murphy said the NFL is just looking out for the health of the players.

“It was player safety,” said Murphy. “To my understanding, they felt that if you had a two-man wedge, there was a better chance of a guy running around a wedge and not having to go in between two giants. That’s what it was. It was three offensive linemen running right into a safety or a corner.

"They felt like if they removed one of those guys it gives the safety or corner a chance to run around a block and make it, rather than have to put himself in harm’s way and go into the wedge.”

If a team has three or more players creating a wedge on a kick return, they will receive a 15-yard penalty from the spot of the wedge.

The Vikings will wrap up their first mandatory mini-camp session on Sunday. Check back for more updates from everything that is happening at Winter Park.

Five Things Asher Allen Must Do to Win the Minnesota Vikings' Nickel Job

This is a multiple part series in which I will be breaking down Vikings position battles and highlighting what players need to do to win their respective starting position.

Although Vikings fans might not know too much about the 2009 third-round rookie cornerback from Georgia named Asher Allen, they do not have to look far to see the type of football he plays.

If you look at Allen, he is a short guy who is very athletic and is a great tackler. Sound like anyone familiar? Cornerback Antoine Winfield went to his first Pro Bowl last season after showing that just because he isn't the biggest guy, doesn't mean he can't pack a punch.

Look for the same out of Allen, who will come in this training camp to compete for the team's starting nickel job, along with Charles Gordon, Karl Paymah, and Benny Sapp.

He was one of thirteen finalists for the Thorpe Award in 2008, which is given to the best defensive back in the nation. Also, when looking through his stats, he always seemed to come up with plays in big games against the nation's best teams.

Yes, Allen has the potential to be something special, but now is his toughest challenge yet, his transition into the NFL. Will his size be a negative or will his play rise above that? These are five things Asher Allen needs to do this summer in training camp to win the Vikings' nickel back position.

1. Gel into Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier's Defense and Play Like a Vet

Any rookie who comes into the NFL will tell you the same thing. Adjusting to the pro's is easier said than done. That said, Allen's first task will be learning Leslie Frazier's Tampa Two defensive scheme and not making any big mental errors on the field.

The more a rookie knows what his responsibilities are, the more confidence he has, and that should result in bigger plays.

In camp this summer, look for Allen to get the most out of his abilities, while knowing the defense like the back of his hand. If he has no problem grasping Frazier's concepts, Allen has most of the physical attributes to become a good corner in this league. The only negative characteristic about Allen? His size.

2. Show He Can Outplay His Size

Allen (5'9", 194 lbs.) is basically a younger Antoine Winfield, when talking about size, which definitely isn't a positive when playing the cornerback position.

One of his best abilities is his ability to bring down receivers on his own, but he must realize that he is not playing against the small, speedy receivers in the SEC anymore. Allen must prove that he can bring down the taller and bigger receivers that he is matched up with in the NFL.

Staying on the topic of tall receivers, one of the challenges for Allen will be his play, when he is competing for jump balls. I mentioned in a previous article that fellow corner Charles Gordon might be tested with some bigger receivers this summer. Expect the same for Allen. The coaches might want to get a look at how he plays a guy like Sidney Rice in camp, who is good at jumping up to get balls at the highest point.

3. Observe and Learn from the Starters in Practice

Allen would be wise to look at the players ahead of him on the depth chart, when it is not his turn for reps in practice.

Along with Winfield, starter Cedric Griffin has also been a solid player after being drafted by the Vikings in the second round of the 2006 draft. Of course he struggled out of the gate, but Griffin has shown he has the coverage ability and the skills in run support to be one of the best corners in the league.

So, in individual drills and scrimmage, Allen should keep an eye on these two and watch their technique in coverage as well as tackling. Observation will be key for the young rookie in training camp.

4. Demonstrate His Work Ethic and Passion for the Game

One of Allen's strengths coming out of Georgia was his work ethic and his passion for the game of football, both of which are key for a young player who wants to make a name for himself in this league.

This summer in camp, don't be surprised to see him out on the field getting all the reps he can to better prepare himself for the next practice. From what I have heard, the guy absolutely loves the game and will do whatever it takes to get better.

The best corners on the Vikings are also some of the better prepared players on the field, both mentally and physically. Along with watching what Winfield and Griffin do in practice, Allen also will learn some tips from them in the film room. Trust me, with all the meetings that take place in training camp, he will get his share of help that will mold him into the player he wants to be.

5. Show He Has a Short Memory in the Pro's

Almost as certain as you having to pay taxes, rookies will have their share of struggles in their transition to the NFL.

Another strength of Allen's is his ability to forget a play as soon as the whistle blows. And another certainty is that he will get beat on some plays in practice, which he will have to overcome if he wants to start the season in the nickel spot.

This summer in camp, watch Allen's body language after a play that doesn't go his way. You can expect that he will move on and learn from what he did wrong, key for a young player in competition.

Although he is a young guy who doesn't have terrific size, you can expect Asher Allen to fight every last second to achieve what he wants on the 2009 Minnesota Vikings. With hard work and cornerback education from some of the best in the league, expect him to be a player on the rise in the next few seasons.

Vikings Mini-camp Review 5/29: Harvin Impresses; Udeze Excited to Be Back

As much of the media gathered at Winter Park in Eden Prairie for the Vikings' first mandatory mini-camp practice of the summer, most of the talk was about retired quarterback Brett Favre or the absence of Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield.

But there was definitely more to talk about, like the players at work.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, rookie wide receiver Percy Harvin showed off his speed at practice Friday, making many great catches over the middle of the field.

When asked about Harvin, linebacker Ben Leber said that he and other players see the same in him as they do a current Vikings superstar.

“We were talking about AP’s first year and everybody was throwing the word around ‘explosive.’ I think it’s same thing you can say about Percy," Leber said. "He’s explosive. You definitely want to get the ball in his hands.”

As for other notes, middle linebacker E.J. Henderson was back in the middle of the defense after being put out for the 2008 season after he suffered a toe injury in Week Four at Tennessee.

Vikings fans have to be excited, as Henderson has been improving every year since he was drafted by Minnesota in 2003, and people around the NFL are noticing.

In 2007, Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson said he would be "shocked" if Henderson did not make the Pro Bowl that year. He surprisingly didn't in 2007 but had been producing at a Pro Bowl level before his injury last season.

Another defensive player back on the field was defensive end Kenechi Udeze, who missed the entire 2008 season after being diagnosed with leukemia in February of '08.

Udeze spoke to reporters after practice, and when asked if he ever thought he wouldn't make it back, he gave them a straight answer.

“No. That’s just the way that I’ve kind of been born and raised," Udeze said. "I’ve had great coaches throughout my life and they just instilled in me everything I needed to get through this.

"Besides that, coming from a great family; my mom always being the provider and the force behind our family. Then my older brother, who you guys already know about. I’ve been training for this my whole life. I’m doing good. I’m really feeling great about everything and like I said it’s just great to back out here with the fellas.”

When asked if he would be ready for training camp this summer, Udeze didn't flinch again.

“Of course I’m going to be ready," Udeze said. "There’s only one more thing to do and that’s to keep going. I can’t take a day off. I can’t take a second off. I’m still miles away from where I was before compared to other guys out here — Ray, Jayme, and Jared — I’m not in the same playing field now. But that’s what I’m striving to and that’s what I’m working to. Until today, until the first game, that’s what I’m getting to.”

After all he has been through, it's a victory in itself just to see him practicing. You can be assured he will keep pushing himself and will be back to rushing this passer this season like he did from 2004-2007.

On a minor note, head coach Brad Childress said after practice that defensive tackle Pat Williams' comments on quarterback Tarvaris Jackson's work ethic were not to be taken as criticism, in his opinion.

Last week on Sirius NFL Radio Williams said that Jackson needed to put more hours in to be a successful starter in the NFL.

"If you guys know Pat, you guys have covered him on a frequent basis; I've listened to Pat talk to Tarvaris about that (working hard) since Tarvaris has been here," Childress said.

"I'm not sure that his comments, cast as criticism, he might say the same thing to me. But I watch that every day. I watch that dynamic every day, so it takes on a little bit of a different tone for me. I understand everybody wants opinions about everything. But sometimes opinions are your own."

The Vikings will hold two practices tomorrow at Winter Park, so check back for all the updates and quotes from purple country.

Minnesota Vikings Cornerback Antoine Winfield Not Present at Friday's Minicamp

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield was absent from the team's from the team's first mandatory minicamp.

The Pro Bowl corner is heading into the final year of his contract with the Vikings

Although the team and Winfield's agent, Ashanti Webb, have been in negotiations this offseason regarding a new deal, talks broke off earlier this month and have not resumed.

If Winfield is unexcused from his absence, he could be subject to $15,000 in fines and also forfeiture of part of a signing bonus.

The Vikings would be wise to get this done. Winfield has been not only the emotional leader of the defense for the past five seasons, he played well enough last year to punch his first ticket to the Pro Bowl. In 2008, Winfield recorded 95 tackles, two interceptions, two sacks, and four forced fumbles.

He was drafted in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills out of Ohio State and played there for five seasons before signing with the Vikings before the 2004 season.

Although many are not too surprised at this move, a lot of teammates and coaches in the Vikings organization expected him to be at the mandatory minicamp.

I will keep you up to date on Winfield's situation and everything else through this weekend's minicamp that started Friday and ends on Sunday.

Update: According to Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, head coach Brad Childress said after practice that Winfield was attending the funeral of a friend's mother and won't be attending practices for the next three days.

Five Things Charles Gordon Must Do To Win the Minnesota Vikings' Nickel Job

This is a multiple part series in which I will be breaking down Vikings position battles, highlighting what players need to do to win their respective starting position.

Vikings cornerback Charles Gordon had everything he had ever dreamed of during the first half of the 2008 season. An undrafted free agent that signed with the Vikings before the 2006 season out of Kansas, he was brought in more for his punt return skills than his ability to play cornerback.

Although he expectedly had a slow start, Gordon kept battling in training camp every season and worked his way into the lineup when the Vikings used multiple defensive back formations and recorded his first interception in 2007 against Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

Gordon started as the Vikings' nickel defensive back in 2008 until week 10, when his season was ended due to a severe ankle injury he suffered on a punt return against the Green Bay Packers.

This season, many in the media have written him off as the return starter in 2009 due to his injury, thinking he won't recover well enough to be the player he was.

Although it is a long road, Gordon proved he had the heart to compete when he was a virtually unknown at training camp in 2006. These are five things he must do to win back his starting nickel position for the 2009 season in Minnesota.

1. Prove His Injury Has Healed 100 percent

Let's just say that his injury wasn't a minor scrap to the back of the leg. When searching "Charles Gordon" on YouTube.com, the most popular search is his injury. On the play, Gordon tried to dance around a defender but his left foot got caught underneath a falling player.

His body turned but he foot stayed in the same position, and when he was shown laying on the field, his left foot was facing the opposite way it should have been.

Although this is one of the most serious injuries a player can suffer, especially when playing defensive back, Gordon has worked hard this offseason with his rehab and expects to be back on the field playing to the best of his ability.

In order to win his starting spot in the secondary when the nickel package is installed, Gordon must show head coach Brad Childress that his movement and flexibility have not decreased since the injury.

He will also need to prove that he has the quickness in space he had pre-injury, otherwise younger corners like Karl Paymah or Asher Allen could win the job due to their quick reaction times when playing in space.

2. Show He Still Has Straight-Line Speed

Most of the big plays Gordon has made in his career have come from his recovery speed. He simply has had the speed to make up ground when receivers get behind him.

This ankle injury will no doubt have an effect on his speed, but Gordon must show he still has enough speed to play deep zones and that he won't give up the big play because he has lost his mobility.

If he shows in camp that he hasn't lost a step, it will be a big plus because he has always been a guy who can tackle receivers in the open field. Gordon also has good hands and could win the job if he creates enough turnovers during scrimmage and seven-on-seven drills.

3. Improve His Coverage When Playing Wide

I have always been impressed with Gordon's play when lined up against slot receivers on third down. It is hard to find a guy who can chase the quickest receivers around the field while also having the strength to make tackles in the open field but Gordon has shown to have these two attributes.

Also, both of Gordon's career interceptions came in the middle of the field, one on Rivers and the other last year on a tipped pass thrown from Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Although he rarely lines up wide, he must show that he is capable of playing toward the sidelines in case either starters Cedric Griffin or Antoine Winfield are lost due to injury.

Look for the coaching staff to put him against some taller and more physical receivers like Sidney Rice or Bernard Berrian in training camp to test his ability on playing the pass toward the sideline.

4. Help in Run Support

After talking up Gordon's skills in pass coverage, he definitely could improve in an area that Winfield and Griffin excel at, helping in run support.

Gordon is not the biggest defensive back on the field (5'11", 180 lbs.), and that hurts him when he tries to tackle bigger running backs on sweeps and outside handoffs.

This summer in camp, he must show a better job at coming up and hitting running backs at the point of attack. When running backs run into him, they seem to be able to fall forward for a couple more yards.

If Gordon has been following the conditioning program at Winter Park and added some muscle, we should be able to see some improvement in his help against the run.

5. Show Better Awareness In Coverage

Although I have raved about Gordon's straight line speed in this article, he wouldn't need to use it as much if he had better awareness of where receivers are when he is playing zone.

In camp, he can't make many mistakes in coverage if he wants a shot at the starting spot, especially giving up the big play. Many times in the past, I have seen Gordon lose track of a receiver down the field and he has to end up making a play with his head facing opposite the quarterback.

This summer, look for Gordon to improve his vision of the whole field and not letting quicker receivers get behind him.

Although he has a long road back, he is the type of cornerback who welcomes the opportunity. If Gordon shows that he has improved or kept these previous attributes, he has a very good shot at playing the position he had the last time he was on a football field.

-Update: Gordon was on the field during Friday's minicamp session, but was not participating in drills.

NFLPA's Request To Put Suspensions On Hold Denied By Judge

On Friday, a federal judge denied a request by the NFL Player's Association to have suspensions of five players, including Vikings Pro-Bowl defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams, put on hold while a case regarding a banned diuretic is being appealed.

Just because these suspensions were not put on hold doesn't mean the players involved won't be playing week one, according to NFLPA attorney Jeffrey Kessler, who said action at the appellate court level could take place before the season even starts.

The Williamses and three 2008 New Orleans Saints players, including running back Deuce McAllister, defensive end Charles Grant, and defensive end Will Smith, were suspended last season after testing positive for a drug known as bumetanide, that was not labeled on a produce called StarCaps.

StarCaps is a product that helps in weight loss, but bumetanide is banned by the league because it can be used as a mask for steroids.

The NFL Players Association is arguing that players should not be suspended due to the drug not being labeled on the product. It has also brought up the fact that the league knew bumetanide was in the product in 2006, but never notified players or federal regulators.

Attorneys for the league argue it has always made players responsible for what they put in their bodies, even if a banned substance is taken inadvertently.

It is hard to tell about when a decision will be made as two claims were sent to the state court by U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson last week.

Stay tuned for all updates on the Williams's futures.
