Eagles Place Omar Gaither on IR, Sign RB P.J. Hill

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting via twitter that the Philadelphia Eagles have placed linebacker Omar Gaither on injured reserve, ending his 2009 season. The Eagles also signed running back P.J. Hill.

Hill was on the New Orleans Saints practice squad, and he played with the Saints this offseason after he signed with New Orleans as an undrafted free agent. Gaither started at middle linebacker before the injury.

Hill ran for 1,000 yards in all three seasons he spent at Wisconsin, only former first round pick Ron Dayne can match that. Hill is second in Wisconsin's all time rushing yards ans rushing touchdowns only to Ron Dayne.

Phillip Rivers Signs Extension With Chargers

Len Pasquarelli of ESPN is reporting that the San Diego Chargers have signed quarterback Phillip Rivers to a six year, 92 million dollar contract. The Contract is guaranteed almost 40 million dollars.

Rivers threw for 4,009 passing yards last season, while leading the Chargers on a late season playoff run. Rivers has started all 16 games in which he has played in since 2005, when Drew Brees was still in San Diego.

Rivers threw for 3,152 yards in 2007, and added 21 touchdowns while throwing 15 interceptions. In 2006, Rivers threw for 3,388 passing yards in his first season as a starting quarterback.

Quarterback Battles Update

Sage Rosenfels vs. Tarvaris Jackson

Rosenfels looks to have the early lead on Jackson in the Vikings quarterback battle. After a great end to last season, Jackson has struggled. On the other hand, after a poor 2008 campaign for Rosenfels he has shined.

Rosenfels completed 10 of 13 passes against the Colts, while Jackson played with the back ups and did much worse. Jackson will have a chance to start against Kansas City.

Mark Sanchez vs. Kellen Clemens

Thus far in training camp, Mark Sanchez has looked much better than Kellen Clemens. Clemens will start the Jets first preseason game against the Rams, while Sanchez will start against the Ravens next week.

Shaun Hill vs. Alex Smith

Shaun Hill looks to have the early lead over Alex Smith to be the 49ers starting quarterback. Mike Singletary told reporters that Hill is less of a mystery than Smith. Smith started last season as the 49ers starting quarterback, but was placed on IR before week one.

Luke McCown vs. Byron Leftwitch vs. Josh Freeman

It seems unlikely that Josh Freeman will win this battle. Right now Byron Leftwitch and Luke McCown are battling it out to be the Buccaneers week one starter. Who knows who will win. Leftwich is the better passer, but McCown knows the system more.

Brady Quinn vs. Derek Anderson

Brady Quinn has looked bad, Derek Anderson has looked worse. My guess is the Browns will go with Quinn, but you never know what Eric Mangini is going to do. Quinn also gets paid more and is younger.

Matthew Stafford vs. Daunte Culpepper

Culpepper was expected to get this job by default, but with Stafford's good play in the Lions first preseason game, the Lions might reconsider. Culpepper is in very good shape, but he needs more polish, as does Stafford.

Vick Not Heading To Redskins

The Associated Press is reporting the Washington Redskins are not an option for Michael Vick. Joel Segal, Vick's agent, visited the Redskins the other day for a "non-Vick related visit".

Segal told reporters a lot of NFL teams are interested in signing Vick, but he said there is "no chance" of Vick signing with the Redskins. Segal represents players on the Redskins such as, Jason Campbell, LaRon Landry and DeAngelo Hall.

Tony Dungy and Segal came out saying Vick has had a lot of interest from NFL teams, and he should sign "very soon". Vick can make contact with teams, but he still does not have full reinstatement from the NFL.

Broncos Release Depth Chart

The Denver Broncos released their depth chart, and it turns out their best player is not even a starter. Brandon Marshall is listed as the fourth wide receiver on the Broncos Web site. Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley and Jabar Gaffney are listed ahead of Marshall.

Correll Buckhalter is listed ahead of LaMont Jordan, Peyton Hillis and Knowshon Moreno. Moreno will probably start the season as the starter. Hillis could start at fullback, but the Broncos plan to use three wide receivers.

Elvis Dumervil and Mario Haggan are currently the starting outside linebackers. Darrell Reid and Robert Ayers were working second string. Alphonso Smith is also listed as the top punt and kick returner, instead of Royal.

Report: Five NFL Teams Considering Michael Vick

Both ESPN and ProFootballTalk are reporting that five NFL teams are chasing after former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick. ESPN made a list of the five teams, but PFT has not yet explained more.

1. Green Bay Packers: This is a fact. The Packers have sent top men to see Vick's people. Green Bay is looking to use Vick as a backup quarterback, who gets four or five snaps in a special package.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mortensen reported the Steelers have not ruled out Vick. Vick would probably be used mainly in trick play packages.

3. Team not identified

4. Team not identified

5. Team not identified

Other teams who have ruled out Vick can still change their mind about Vick, but like former Colts coach Tony Dungy said, the ownership and coaches need to be on the same page.

Dungy said several teams have contacted him about Vick. Dungy thinks Vick is mentally ready for the NFL, but he does not know about him physically.

The teams who would likely consider Vick the most are the Rams, 49ers, Patriots, and Dolphins.

Pittsburgh Steelers Sign Offensive Lineman Alex Stepanovich

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced they signed veteran offensive lineman Alex Stepanovich. Stepanovich was signed as a precaution in case Darnell Stapleton's surgery turns out to take a while.

Stepanovich played with the Arizona Cardinals from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, he played with the Cincinnati Bengals, and in 2008 he played with the Atlanta Falcons. Stepanovich started all 16 games as a rookie in 2004.

In all, he has started 34 of 46 games in which he has played in. Stepanovich has the versatility to play either center or guard. Of the four games in which Stepanovich played in last season, he did not start any.

Michael Vick A Free Man On Monday

Michael Vick will be free from federal custody on Monday, but he has not yet been reinstated by the NFL. Teams will likely not sign Vick, until he has been reinstated. If Vick is not reinstated, he could look at other leagues like the CFL, UFL, etc.

NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell wants to see genuine remorse from Vick before he reinstates him. Tony Dungy, among others believe that Vick has paid his price and he should be reinstated.

It is unknown if Vick has kept in shape since he was sentenced to hard time, and even if he is reinstated, teams might not think he is football ready, thus he could sit out the 2009 season. A possibility is playing in the UFL to show NFL teams that he is ready for the prime time.

NFL teams would also have to figure out how they use Vick. Do they use him as a quarterback, or do they use him as a utility runner, or even a wide receiver. The Dolphins would seem to be a great fit since they use the "wildcat", but the have already invested in Pat White.

A team like the Cowboys might want his talent, but they let go of big distractions like Tank Johnson, Terrell Owens, and Pacman Jones, and it seems like they are keeping a drama free summer thus far.

New England is said to be an option. In the past, The Patriots have kept the egos of Corey Dillon and Randy Moss in check, but Michael Vick might be too much to handle for a team that tries to go under the radar.

The UFL is very open to Michael Vick, but Vick might not want to play in a smaller league. Were Vick to sign with a UFL team, he could probably make the same amount of money Vick would if Vick signed a veteran minimum contract.

The 49ers could look to add Vick. Were Vick to sign with San Francisco, the 49ers might decide to keep him at quarterback, and let him start there. Alex Smith and Shaun Hill are probably just as good at passing, but Vick adds much value as a runner.

Tarvaris Jackson To Be Traded?

The National Football Post, along with other media outlets, is reporting that the Minnesotta Vikings will trade quarterback Tarvaris Jackson if and when they sign free agent quarterback Brett Favre.

Jackson has shown improvement his last three seasons and could be in line for a breakout season.

Jackson's completion percentage, TD-INT ratio, and rating have increased the past three seasons, and if he continues at this pace, he could be a top quarterback.

Some team could get a bargain in Jackson when he is traded, much like the Dolphins received in Chad Pennington last season. Pennington played better than Favre last season, even though the Jets released him after acquiring Favre.

Teams like the Broncos, Lions, or 49ers could look to sign Jackson if he were to become available. Any of those landing spots would place him in a quarterback competition for a starting spot, with Kyle Orton in Denver, Daunte Culpepper in Detroit, and Alex Smith and Shaun Hill in San Francisco.

Mike Shanahan To Return To Coaching

NFL.com is reporting that former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is interested in returning to coaching football. Shanahan told Steve Wyche he wants to get a head coaching job as soon as the 2010.

Shanahan was fired by the Broncos last offseason and replaced by Patriots offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels. Shanahan told Wyche he wishes both Jay Cutler and the Broncos the best, and that he likes new coach Josh McDaniels.

Shanahan has coached 16 seasons as a head coach and is 8-5 in the playoffs. Shanahan said he is still staying active to prepare for coaching. Shanahan likes to run a west coast offense, and might only consider coaching a team he thinks will be a Super Bowl contender.

Redskins Draft Kentucky's Jeremy Jarmon in NFL Supplemental Draft

Pro Football Weekly is reporting that the Washington Redskins have drafted defensive end Jeremy Jarmon in the 2009 NFL Supplemental draft. The Redskins will give up a third-round pick in next year's draft to compensate the pick.

Other than Jarmon, no players were drafted in the supplemental draft. The Lions were willing to give up a fourth-round pick to get Jarmon, but in the end, the Redskins gave up a third rounder. The Redskins signed Albert Haynewsorth and drafted Brian Orakpo, so their line could be really improved in 2009.

Deon Murphy was the most likely other than Jarmon to be drafted, and might get a chance as a punt returner for some team. Jarmon will need some time to develop, since he is relatively fresh out of college.

Matt Cassel Signs Extension with Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced that they have signed quarterback Matt Cassel to a long-term extension. The deal is six seasons, and the money goes up over $60 million. Cassel was rumored to sign the deal on draft day, but it took almost three months for the contract to be signed.

Cassel was traded by the New England Patriots this offseason, because Tom Brady showed progress in his rehab. Last season, Cassel thew for 3,693 yards and 21 touchdowns, while completing over 60 percent of the passes he threw.

There are still questions about Cassel. Some think he is a product of his surroundings. Others think it is too early to give him too much after one good season. Look what happened to Derek Anderson.

New York Jets Make Moves at Tight End, Again

The New York Jets have announced that they have released tight end Bubba Franks and signed tight end Richard Owens. Franks and Owens are primarily blockers, but Owens can contribute on special teams.

Owens will likely serve as the primary back up to Dustin Keller, unless another free agent is signed, which is a likely possibility. Last season, Franks caught six passes for 47 yards with the Jets.

Owens can also play fullback, where he could take a roster spot away from Jehu Caulcrick, who is trying to make the team as the second fullback. Owens was a contributor in the Daunte Culpepper-era for the Vikings.

Terrell Suggs Signs Extension with Baltimore Ravens

ProFootballTalk.com is reporting the Baltimore Ravens have signed defensive end/outside linebacker Terrell Suggs to a contract extension. The deal is said to be six years and worth $63 million.

His signing bonus, $33 million, will be the highest for a defensive player in the history of the NFL. PFT is reporting Suggs will earn the bulk of his money in the first two seasons, which will average about $20 million a year.

Suggs recorded eight sacks last season, andle he returned two interceptions for touchdowns. As a rookie in 2003, he started one game and recorded 12 sacks and one interception. Suggs thinks of himself as a defensive end, not an outside linebacker.

Warrick Dunn to the Philadelphia Eagles?

USA Today is reporting the Philadelphia Eagles could be interested in signing Warrick Dunn, because of the recent ankle surgery on Brian Westbrook. Dunn was released this past offseason by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he hasn't signed with another team.

Last season, Dunn rushed for 786 yards and two touchdowns in his return to Tampa Bay. Dunn's best season came in 2005, when he was still playing with the Atlanta Falcons, he rushed for 1,416 yards.

Dunn has never been a full-time back per say, but if he were to sign with the Eagles and get about 100 carries, he would make the best of them, because that is what Warrick Dunn does.

Despite his success, Dunn has never rushed for over 10 touchdowns, and he has never carried the ball over 300 times in a season.

Brian Griese Released by Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced they have released quarterback Brian Griese. Griese played his last two seasons in Tampa, where he also spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Griese's father is the legendary Bob Griese.

The Buccaneers currently have four quarterbacks on their roster: Josh Johnson, Luke McCown, Josh Freeman, and Byron Leftwich.

McCown or Leftwich will likely start the season, but Freeman is the quarterback of the future. One of Johnson, Leftwich, or McCown could actually be cut before the season starts.

Griese had a bad season last year throwing five touchdowns and seven interceptions. Griese started five games. Griese's best season came in 2002, his last year with the Broncos, when he threw for 3,214 yards.

Shaun Alexander's NFL Career Likely Done

Mike Sando of ESPN.com is reporting that former Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins running back Shaun Alexander is likely done playing in the NFL. Sando thinks the two teams that would like Alexander the most, the Seahawks and the Redskins, don't want him.

Alexander does not offer much on special teams, a must for reserve running backs, and the market for 32-year-old backs is less demanding than usual. Alexander held the touchdown record in 2006, but it was taken away from him by LaDainian Tomlinson.

Alexander played in four games last season, carrying the ball 11 times for 24 yards and catching one pass for nine yards. In 2007, Alexander ran 207 times for 706 yards and four touchdowns.

Redskins' Fred Davis Switches Agents to Drew Rosenhaus

Drew Rosenhaus is reporting via his Twitter page that he has a new client in Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis. Davis was drafted in the second round of the 2008 NFL draft, but he struggled to get on the field last season.

Davis caught only three passes for 27 yards as a rookie in 2008 while playing behind Todd Yoder and Chris Cooley. Davis signed a four-year deal worth $3.5 million last season. Davis must think he will be hitting the field more if he hired Rosenhaus to get a higher contract.

Jim Zorn told reporters last season that he did not trust Davis, but he did say that he thought Davis had the athletic ability to be a good player in the NFL. Davis comes from a line of unsuccessful USC NFL tight ends.

UFL Announces New Rules

The Boston Globe is reporting that the UFL has added two very important new rules. The first is that the "tuck rule," which allows quarterbacks to escape a fumble if they are throwing a forward pass, has been eliminated.

The second is the UFL has adjusted the rulings of sudden death overtime. Instead of sudden death, the teams will each have a chance to score on offense in overtime. Which kind of loses the importance of the coin toss.

Sudden death will still be the way the game is ended in overtime. It is unclear to me how much time will be allowed in overtime, and/or there is ties in UFL games. I like the way this league is heading.

Jaguars Wide Receiver Spotlight

The Jaguars have a pretty awful mix of youth and experience at wide receiver. With the recent trade of Dennis Northcutt the Jaguars will have Mike Walker come out of the slot and start wide opposite Torry Holt.

Holt had his worst season (2008) since his rookie year; but the Jaguars are confident, me not so much. His receiving totals have declined steadily the last couple of years, and he might have trouble being the Jaguars only respectable target.

Holt also had his lowest touchdown total of his career in 2008. In addition, Holt will have to adjust to a new team, coach, offensive scheme and quarterback. His average has also decreased steadily the last couple of seasons.

With the loss of Northcutt, Mike Walker will be put into action. Walker started one out of nine games he played in as a rookie in 2008. Walker had 16 receptions for 217 yards and zero touchdowns. Walker, like most of the Jaguar receivers, is a speed threat.

Troy Williamson is playing on borrowed time. Williamson was the ultimate first round bust. Williamson was drafted to be the next Randy Moss, but ended up with less than 160 fans on his facebook page.

Williamson started only one game out of eight in which he played. Catching five passes for only 30 yards, but he recorded one touchdown. Williamson will receive a lot of competition from Tiquan Underwood, Jarrett Dillard, and Mike Thomas.

Thomas was drafted before Dillard and Underwood, but both might be more NFL ready than him. The Jaguars said they traded Northcutt because they thought the players behind him were just as good. Hope they're right.

The Jaguars are likely to sign a receiver before mini camp starts. Several names could show up in the transaction sheet. Plaxico Burress and Drew Bennett the most noteworthy.

Mike Williams Making NFL Comeback

Tom Kowalski of Michigan Live is reporting that former Detroit Lions first round pick Mike Williams told NFL teams that he would switch to a tight end in the NFL, if they don't want him as a receiver.

Mike Williams last played in 2007 with the Tennesee Titans and the Oakland Raiders. He was the 10th pick in the 2005 NFL draft. Williams went to USC because Florida State and Florida wanted to use him at tight end.

Williams was traded along with Josh McCown after the 2006 season. Right now Williams weights about 240 pounds, but he can easily weigh 270 pounds. The average weight for a wide receiver is about 200 pounds.

KFFL.com is reporting that the Detroit Lions worked out CFL quarterback Cleveland McCoy today. McCoy spent time working as a receiver, and also threw some passes. McCoy would have trouble making the Lions roster were he to be signed.

McCoy got looks from the New Orleans Saints after spending time at South Carolina State University. McCoy runs about a 4.6 or 4.7 40 yard dash, which could limit his chances in the pros.

KFFL clarified that McCoy will work out with the Lions until their mini camps are over. McCoy struggles as a quarterback, so it is likely he would be used as a possible trick play threat or as a slot receiver.

Dennis Northcutt Wants Out Of Jacksonville

ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Dennis Northcutt has been granted permission to seek a trade. Northcutt has spent his last two seasons in Jacksonville, but before that he was a firs round draft choice in the 2000 draft for the Cleveland Browns.

Last season Northcutt caught 44 receptions for 545 yards and two touchdowns. Northcutt is currently the starting wide receiver opposite Torry Holt. Were Northcutt to be traded second year pro Mike Walker would replace him.

Troy Williamson seems to have the edge at depth past Walker, although rookies Mike Thomas, Jarrett Dillard, and Tiquan Underwood will get plenty of chances to beat him out. The Jaguars have dealt with a never ending rotation of receivers the past couple of years.

Greg Jennings: Second Highest Paid WR In NFL History

It is official.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentential is reporting that the Green Bay Packers have extended Greg Jennings contract. The deal could be worth around $8-10 million dollars.

The deal makes Jennings the second richest WR in the NFL other than Larry Fitzgerald.

Jennings is also now the second most expensive player on the packers roster other than Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers was scheduled to make $535,000 this season, but will probably make about $9,000,000 instead.

Meanwhile the Packers have announced the releasing of wide receiver Lorene Sam. Sam is the brother of former Patriots wide receiver P.K. Sam.

Sam played quarterback at the University of Texas El Paso.

Tennessee Titans Sign Two Draft Picks

Jim Wyatt at The Tennessean is reporting the Tennessee Titans have signed rookies Dominique Edison and Ryan Durand. Wyatt indicated the deals were both four years long. The Titans have signed three of 11 draft picks that they drafted.

Durand is a guard out of Syracuse. Durand was drafted in the seventh round. Durand was not invited to the scouting combine to NFL scouts surprise, but he was still drafted with room to spare in the seventh round.

Edison is a receiver out of Stephen F. Austin. Edison was the 30th pick in the sixth round in April's draft. Edison is tall and skinny, and he can bring in a deep pass, but he lacks muscle and strength to be a full-time slot payer.

Derrick Brooks Still Waiting for Call from NFL

Peter King of Sports Illustrated is reporting that former Tampa Bay Buccaneers outside linebacker Derrick Brooks is still looking to sign with an NFL team before the upcoming NFL season. Rumors have been swirling about the possibility of Brooks signing with the New Orleans Saints.

Brooks would probably be interested in a team that uses a lot of Cover 2 or Tampa 2 defenses. King noted that Brooks has not received an offer from a team yet, but one could be coming if a linebacker gets hurt in camp.

At 36, Brooks' time in the NFL is starting to slow down, and so is his speed. Brooks looked considerably slower last season, leading to his release.

Amani Toomer Hoping to Sign Before Training Camp

The New York Daily News is reporting that former New York Giants receiver Amani Toomer is looking to sign with a team before training camp starts in two months.

The catch: Toomer is not interested in re-signing with the Giants.

Entering yet another NFL season, Toomer is 34, and if he signs with a team, it will likely be his last season in the NFL. Look for Toomer to target a team where he thinks he can help create another Super Bowl run.

Toomer was phased out of the offense last season with the emergence of Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon. Toomer will be replaced by either Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham, or Hakeem Nicks in New York's lineup.

Report: Brett Favre Won't Need to be Reinstated

ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Brett Favre will not need to be reinstated to sign with a team in the NFL.

Favre is expected to sign with the Minnesota Vikings in the next three weeks. Last year at about this time, Favre came out of retirement and was traded to the New York Jets.

Favre had to be reinstated last season because he was on the Green Bay Packers' roster. Favre ended his retirement last season and was unhappy that Mike McCarthy was making him compete with Aaron Rodgers. Favre was involved in trade talks to the Vikings, Jets, and Buccaneers.

The Jets traded a comp. pick, and in the deal the Jets would have to give up a couple first-round picks if they traded Favre to the Vikings. Now Favre is released, that deal is voided.

La'Roi Glover Retires after 13 Years in NFL

La' Roi Glover has announced his retirement, a press release was issued last night. Glover was currently a free agent, after playing the last four seasons in St. Louis after he followed Jim Haslett from New Orleans.

Glover, 34, played 13 seasons in the NFL and made six Pro Bowls.

“I’m blessed that I was able to play this game that I love for so long. It has been such an incredible journey. The players, coaches, and front office staff in the cities I’ve played have all given me so many great memories.” Glover said. “I still love the game with the same passion I had as a young player in high school, so I plan to always be attached to it in some way, whether commentating, working in the front office, or scouting. But who knows what opportunities await in the next chapter of my life.“
