Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Draft Breakdown

1.Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State

It was pretty well known Bucs head coach Raheem Morris coveted Freeman. He's very big, athletic, and has a strong arm. Can he adjust to the NFL properly? Is he ready for the NFL? There's a lot of questions about Freeman, but the Bucs obviously feel he's the franchise QB. It's something this team has coveted from Day 1, and they are gambling on Freeman being the man.

3.Roy Miller, DT, Texas

Very good pick, he fits Jim Bates defense and fills a need. Miller is likely to compete and be a starting DT right away. His competition being Ryan Sims, Dre Moore, and Greg Peterson. So if he's as good as he and others think he is, he should have a big impact on the Buccaneers defense in 2009.

4.Kyle Moore, DE, USC

He's very big and physical. Good against the run, which is something the Bucs covet after their terrible play against the run to end the year. He's obviously the replacement for Kevin Carter. He led all Trojans in sacks last year with only 5, but Jim Bates is good with working with defensive linemen. Don't be surprised if Adams/Moore is the Bucs DE tandem and they have some success.

5.Xiaver Fulton, OT, Illinois

I don't understand this pick. Sure you can always use depth at OT. But we didn't have many draft picks and we could've grabbed some players who can help a position of need. Not to say Fulton is a bad player, he's got some upside and the Bucs have been money with drafting offensive linemen since 2006, but I wish the Bucs would've gone in a different direction.

7.EJ Biggers, CB, Western Michigan

The Bucs needed to grab a corner somewhere in the draft. But they probably waited a little too late by taking one in the seventh round. Biggers has some upside for a seventh round pick, and it's not like the Bucs have a lot of corners worth a darn. He's got a legit shot to be on the opening day roster as possibly the No.4 corner, or maybe even the nickel back if he impresses over Elbert Mack.

7.Sammie Stroughter, WR, Oregon State

He's not big, nor is he fast. But he's a guy who made a lot of plays on the football field. Mel Kiper compared him to another Oregon State WR who was drafted in the seventh round who is a Pro Bowler for the Seahawks. Will he be Houshmandzadeh? No, but he's another guy with upside for a seventh rounder. The Bucs lack depth at WR so he'll get a legit chance to make the opening day roster if he can beat out Dexter Jackson, Kelly Campbell, Paris Warren, and Maurice Stovall.

Overall Grade: B+

Analysis:

I like it, a potential franchise QB. Some DL help, and two guys in the seventh round with some potential to be contributors. Good solid draft for a team that wasn't loaded with picks. Not the sexiest draft, we won't be anyone's draft weekend winners. But it's a good start for a new front office.

Mock NHL Draft: Top 10 Players

It's springtime in the NHL again, and while the top sixteen teams in the league are battling it out for Lord Stanley's mug, the other fourteen are looking forward; forward to the event that can either spell the doom of a franchise, or the start of a rise to greatness. Yes, I am speaking of the upcoming NHL draft.

With this year's draft class being one of the most talented in recent memory, most scouts must be salivating at the potential players they could acquire for their respective teams. Here is my look at what I believe will be the result of the top ten picks in this year's draft, and a breakdown of each pick.

1. John Tavares- New York Islanders

Make no mistake, the Islanders have to make this pick. This isn't simply a question of talent, it is a question of marketability. John Tavares has the ability to be a selling point in Long Island. He might be a reason why season ticket holders will renew. Forget what Brian Burke has said about acquiring this pick, because it isn't going to happen. Garth Snow has to make this pick to save his franchise. With the Isles history of trading away great players for peanuts, don't expect Snow to let this one slip out of his hands.

2. Victor Hedman- Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa is one of the most offensively gifted teams in the league, which is why they will take the consensus number two pick, Victor Hedman. Hedman will anchor the Lightning's defense for the future, and will provide lots of offense when called upon. Although I don't believe that Tampa Bay will trade down, there is a possibility that they could if they know that Jared Cowen would be available.

3. Matt Duchene- Colorado Avalanche

With Joe Sakic in the twilight of his career and possibly retiring, the Avalanche will be looking for a replacement, and who better than this highly touted Brampton product. Matt Duchene has even been compared to Sakic, and possesses the number one franchise centre tag that many teams covet. Make no mistake, Matt Duchene will be the property of the Colorado Avalanche this June.

4. Evander Kane- Atlanta Thrashers

Evander Kane will be added to a plethora of highly touted Atlanta prospects including Bogosian, Pavelic, and Esposito. Kane has the potential to become the franchise centre in Atlanta, and could one day provide a dynamic punch with Ilya Kovalchuk (if he re-signs, of course). This pick will be a BPA (best player available) pick.

5. Brayden Schenn- Toronto Maple Leafs

Although Brian Burke will not be able to land the first overall pick, there is a good chance that he will be able to acquire Los Angeles' number five overall pick. With this pick, the Leafs not only acquire a likely franchise cornerstone, they also complete a move that the fans will love- uniting the Schenn brothers.

6. Magnus Svensson- Paajarvi- Phoenix Coyotes

The Phoenix Coyotes will simply be looking to pick the best player available to them at the number six, and will be ecstatic to find the highly touted Timra prospect fall in their lap. Paajarvi will be added to an already potent young offense that includes the likes of Kyle Turris and Peter Mueller. Expect Paajarvi to play the entire year in the NHL as well, as the Coyotes have a habit of fast-tracking their young players.

7. Jared Cowen- Ottawa Senators

The Sens acquire this pick from the Kings, and are happy to select a future defensive cornerstone in Jared Cowen. Cowen, a big bruising defenseman from Spokane, was thought to have top three potential at one time, until a season-ending knee injury put him down a few notches in the minds of NHL scouts. Make no mistake though, Cowen is the real deal, and will be a great addition to the Ottawa defense corps.

8. Dmitri Kulikov- Dallas Stars

With Sergei Zubov likely retiring within the next couple years, the Stars pick up a great offensive replacement in Kulikov. The Stars already have plenty of firepower up front; it is time to bolster their defense, and with this pick they do exactly that.

9. Jordan Schroeder- Los Angeles Kings

The Kings have finally traded down enough, and pick up their guy with the ninth overall pick. The Kings will likely be looking for a talented winger, and Schroeder fits the bill. The talented product of the Minnesota Golden Gophers program will be a great fit in Los Angeles, and will flourish under very little scrutiny.

10. Jacob Josefson- Edmonton Oilers

The highly regarded Djurgarden product will add to an already offensively stellar Oilers team. With the Oilers already fairly close to making the playoffs, they won't be looking to trade up, and will be happy to supplement their prospect pool with Josefson as they let the kids develop with the big team.

Join in on the discussion at Signature Sports!

Frank Summers: NFL Draft Sleeper Number Four

College: UNLV
Position: RB/FB
Physical Stats: 5'10, 230
Combine/Pro Day Stats: 4.63 40 time, 30 reps.
Projected Stock: 7th

Strengths:
- Very strong
- Built like a rock
- Loves to hit and deliver hits
- Great production in college despite not much help surrounding him
- Decent speed for a guy his size

Weaknesses:
- No break away speed
- Tweener between RB and FB
- Went to smaller school
- Didn't play great competition
- Not consistent

Teams Interested:
Steelers have be VERY interested. They sent two scouts and even the RB coach all the way to UNLV just to give him personal workouts. They came back extremely impressed with him and his workouts. There have been many reports saying the Steelers will take him as a short yardage back in the sixth round.

Other Comments:
Summers was a beast in the MWC. He was voted as the toughest player to bring down in the conference and for good reason. This guy will be a monster goal-line back. He lead UNLV in rushing and receiving last season. He's also the only player in UNLV history to gain 1,000 yards from scrimmage in back to back seasons.

If you're not sold on Frank the Tank, watch this video showing his power and intensity:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41ev5xHCX9I

Ian Hoskins: NFL Draft Sleeper Number Three

College: Marshall
Position: DE/OLB
Physical Stats: 6'3, 253
Combine/Pro Day Stats: 50 reps. 4.72 40-yard dash
Projected Stock: Seventh round

Strengths:
- Ridiculously strong
- High upside
- Pretty quick
- Could turn into a superstar
- Plays many different positions
- Had his best games against the best competition

Weaknesses:
- Not much college production, compared to the competition he played
- Hasn't played more than one year at any position he's been at
- No show in a lot of games
- Played at a very small school and not much competition
- Inexperienced

Teams Interested:

Unknown. as of now

Other Comments:

I don't know how Ian Hoskins was projected so late. After his ridiculous outing at the Marshall pro day, all NFL eyes should be raised; 50 reps is just unheard of. On top of those 50 reps, he ran a 4.72, which is pretty quick for DE. He'll take a long time to develop, at least two-three years, but if you're patient, he could be something special. He played LB for two years at MLB and OLB, and moved to DT and DE his senior year. He's most likely become a three-four DE, but there's no set position for him. He could be the steal of the draft in the seventh round.

Blake Schlueter: NFL Draft Sleeper Number Two

College: TCU
Position: C
Physical Stats: 6'3, 290
Combine/Pro Day Stats: 4.79 40 yard dash (Lead all C's)
Projected Stock: Sixth-Seventh

Strengths:
- Great at pulling
- Very quick for a C
- Good long snapper
- Good footwork
- Good hands

Weaknesses:
- Not very strong
- Doesn't have a great first step
- Might have trouble with NT's

Teams Interested:
Cowboys have sent the most scouts, but really he's up for grabs to any team in need of a C, as he's the eighth rated C in the draft.

Other Comments:
Blake started the year as a pretty good prospect, but moved down due to size as the year went on. He shocked everyone at the TCU pro day, which had TCU a record setting 40 scouts in attendance, with a ridiculous 4.79 40 yard dash.

He also shocked everyone by gaining 15 pounds since the Boise St game. He's gained 70 pounds from his freshman year to now at 290. He's shown a lot of potential if he gains some more weight. He was recruited at TCU as a FB who converted to C, so he has shown he can be very versatile. Blake is definitely worth the seventh round pick that he'll most likely be.

Stephen Hodge: NFL Sleeper Profile No. 1

College: TCU
Position: OLB/S
Physical Stats: 6'0; 235 lbs
Combined/Pro Day Stats: 4.58-second 40-yard dash; 22 reps; 10'2" broad jump
Projected Stock: Third to Fifth

Strengths:

- Physical
- Attacks ball
- Great tackler
- Great pass rusher
- Great ST player
- Very motivated and coach-able
- Can play multiple positions
- Fast
- Good size
- Low risk, high reward

Weaknesses:

- Change in position from college to pro
- Weird college system (4-2-5)
- Bad pass coverage for a safety, but above average for an OLB
- Played at non-BCS school
-Sometimes overattacks which puts him out of some plays

Teams Interested: The Bears and Cowboys are the front runners right now. Hodge is a cousin of Lovie Smith, so he's been on the Bears radar for a long time, and the Cowboys have been particularly interested in TCU players, sending multiple scouts and spending a particularly long time on Hodge.

Other Comments:

Hodge is this year's draft sleeper. I have never seen someone attack the ball carrier like Hodge. He's great at shedding blocks and he's an outstanding pass rusher. He is below average in coverage as a safety, but as an OLB he's above average. He's had great production in college, earning all MWC first team honors twice.

He's also a special teams standout. This guy is the most fearless player I have ever seen play college football. He is very versatile and can play many positions in the pros. You know he will always give 100 percent on the field.

This is the one player that shocks me how he's not being talked about as a 1st day pick. I do not see any weaknesses in him. In the Boise State game, he weighed 212 lbs, and he weighed in at the combine at 235 lbs. Even with that weight gain which was all muscle, he still ran an amazing 4.58-second 40-yard dash.

This guy is going to be a great OLB in the pros

Georgia Bulldogs: G-Day Review

This past Friday, my dad, brother, and I attended the annual Georgia Football spring game, also known as "G-Day." It was televised on ESPN for the first time in Georgia football history.

Boy, did they pick a low scoring game to come to.

We woke up in our hotel Saturday morning, got ready, went downstairs for the breakfast buffet, and then headed out. The admission for the game was free this year, it usually runs at $5.00 per person, but this year they did a can food drive for a local organization. We went to the store and grabbed some cans before heading over to a few dawg stores to do some fan shopping.

Wild Wings for the win...

Anyway, we sat in the shade at the stadium and watched the first ever, alumni flag football game. The red team won.

Now let's get to some football. It's the Red Team versus the Black Team. The Red Team consisted of the first team offense and the second team defense, and the Black Team consisted of the second team offense and the first Team defense. Pitting the No. 1 offense against the No. 1 defense, and the No. 2 offense against the No. 2 defense.

Joe Cox, Aaron Murray, and Zach Mettenberger were QB'ing the Red Team, and Logan Grey QB'ing the Black Team with a decent running game backing him up.

Now many complained at the lack of an offensive performance, but isn't this what you would want when you have your No. 1 offense going up against your No. 1 defense? I think both sides played well, the game was televised on ESPN, so, of course, you aren't going to let out your whole playbook. We mixed in some trick plays; the game actually started off with a flea-flicked completion to AJ Green.

It's going to be a good year for the Dawgs. Our defense will be phenomenal and offense is stacked with competition at each position. The real test for the Dawgs will be on Saturday, Sept. 5 when the Dawgs head out to Stillwater to play what should be a top 10 Oklahoma State team on the road.

New York Jets: Offensive Grades

Jets 09 Report:

Offense:

QB: C+

A lot of potential at this position but also a lot of questions. There will be a 3 way competition in camp, but it'll only really be between 2 players, Brett Ratliff and Kellen Clemens.

Brett Ratliff:
Arm Strength-B+
Accuracy-B
Mobility-B
Decision Making-C
Experience-D
Potential-A
Summary—He's been the talk of camp the last year and a half. All of the coaches and players love him. He's very big at 6'4" and has a cannon for an arm. He has no experience in games, but he has been learning from Pennington and Favre for the last 2 years in the organization. He is the favorite to win the starting job.

Kellen Clemens:
Arm Strength-B+
Accuracy-C-
Mobility-B
Decision Making-C-
Experience-C
Potential-B
Summary—He was drafted as the QB of the Jets future, but he hasn't lived up to the hype. He showed some promise when he came in for an injured Chad Pennington in 2006, but towards the end of the year he really mellowed out. He's been in a camp competition 2 years in a row and hasn't won either of them, so unless he showed real improvement over the offseason, I would expect him to still be the backup.

Eric Ainge:
Arm Strength-C
Accuracy-C+
Mobility-C
Decision Making-C
Experience-D
Potential-C
Summary—The Jets say he's in the competition, but he really doesn't have a shot. He's shown enough to stay on the team, but that's about it. He was a late round pick and mainly drafted as a backup. That's what he'll be again this season.

RB: A

This 1-2 punch with Jones and Washington is outstanding. This is one of the best running back duo's in the league. Leon will not be on PR's this year so he can get more carries in the offense. Carries should be close to 50/50 this year, with Chatman coming in every once in awhile on 3rd downs.

Thomas Jones:
Power-B
Mobility-B
Speed-B
Agility-B
Vision-A
Patients-A
Receiving-B
Summary—TJ is a great between the tackles runner. He has one of the best stiff arms in the NFL and can really freeze defenders with a stutter step. He's great at setting up blockers and is great at finding the whole. He broke out last season and he should be even more effective this season with a more open offense.

Leon Washington:
Power-C+
Mobility-A
Speed-A
Agility-A
Vision-B+
Patients-B+
Receiving-A
Summary—Leon has the potential to be the next Marshall Faulk. He said in an interview that he wants to revolutionize the game the way Gayle Sayers did. Along with being the most agile player in the league, Leon also has good power and ability to run between the tackles. He lead the league in 40+ yard plays, despite only being a part time player. He will be used much more, getting more carries, being used more on screens, etc. Look for Leon to make a huge impact this season.

Jesse Chatman:
Power-C
Mobility-B+
Speed-B
Agility-B+
Vision-C
Patients-B
Receiving-A
Summary—He won't be used much but he can still have a big impact. He's almost like a receiver playing RB. He'll be used in 3rd and long situations and used in screens when he's in the game.

O-Line: B+

This O-Line was revamped last season with offseason additions of Alan Faneca and Damien Woody. This year we released RG Brandon Moore to try to sign Chris Kemoeatu, but when we couldn't sign him we resigned Moore. This O-Line will be the exact same unit as last season. The one main problem with this line is depth. Look for the Jets to address that issue in the draft.

D'Brickashaw Ferguson:
Pass Blocking-A
Run Blocking-C+
Strength-B
Footwork-A
Discipline-B+
Summary—Last year he emerged as one of the best pass blockers in the league, especially towards the end of the year...He should improve even more this year. He gained another 10 pounds again this offseason to try to further improve his run blocking, which is not his strength. He has improved in that category though, and he should improve even more this season.

Alan Faneca:
Pass Blocking-B
Run Blocking-A
Strength-B+
Footwork-B
Discipline-A
Summary—He's one of the most respected O-Linemen in the game today. He's the Jets pulling guard. When we ran a trap right with Faneca pulling last season, the Jets averaged over 6.5 YPC. That's their money running play. He's getting up there in age, but there's no doubt he'll be just as effective this year as he was in a Pro Bowl year last year.

Nick Mangold:
Pass Blocking-A
Run Blocking-A
Strength-A
Footwork-A
Discipline-A
Summary—He's the best C in the NFL. He handled Vince Wilfork and Albert Haynesworth last year with ease. We didn't even double team either one of those. Wilfork has just recently stated that Mangold was the toughest player he's ever had to play against. There's nothing bad about Mangold, he's outstanding in everything he does.

Brandon Moore:
Pass Blocking-C+
Run Blocking-A
Strength-A
Footwork-C-
Discipline-C
Summary—He's a monster run blocker, but a really bad pass blocker. Usually he needs Mangold to help bail him out in pass blocking. But he has such a big push in run blocking that if we run behind him it's almost a guaranteed 4 yards.

Damien Woody:
Pass Blocking-C
Run Blocking-A
Strength-A
Footwork-C
Discipline-C+
Summary—He's a lot like Moore. He's a monster run blocker, but not a great pass blocker. He gets beat to the outside a lot. The only good thing is he's a RT and we don't have a lefty QB. He, Moore, and Mangold together make this one of the best sides to run behind in the NFL. But along with that comes a bad side of pass blocking. He is very vulnerable to blitzes and we usually have to keep a RB in the backfield to block.

New Orleans Saints: 2009 Schedule Breakdown

The Saints have the eighth hardest schedule in the league, but I still think they can pull off a playoff run. Here is how I think the season will go:

Week One—Saints vs. Lions

The Lions are a team I laugh at. They do have the first pick and will be better than last year, but the Saints beat them in Detroit, 42-7. Drew Brees had a great game and even with the first pick in the draft, the Saints will still beat them.

(Prediction: Win, 1-0)

Week Two—Saints at Eagles

The Eagles are a great team. It won't be easy to beat them at all. In 2006, the Saints beat the Eagles in the regular season and in the playoffs. I am sure the Eagles are hungry for revenge.

A team that has been to the playoffs so many years in a row and not won a Super Bowl will be more than ready to win one this year. It is an away game, and it won't be easy.

(Prediction: Loss, 1-1)

Week Three—Saints at Bills

The Bills will be another hard team to beat. With the newly acquired TO, it won't be easy. At least the Saints get them early in the year, so it won't be too cold. This will be a good game to watch. The Bills still need a franchise QB, and although I think it won't be an easy game, it will be a high scoring one.

(Prediction: Win, 2-1)

Week Four—Saints vs. Jets

Like Milla said in his Bucs breakdown thread, the Jets are garbage. They have a great team, but without a QB they are of no threat and will not get close to the playoffs. It will be fun to see who they draft, but I don't think the Saints will have too much trouble with them.

(Prediction: Win, 3-1)

Week Five—Bye Week

Week Six—Saints vs. Giants

What can I say? The Giants are the Giants. They have a great defense and a great running game, and if they get Braylon Edwards, it won't be easy at all to stop them. They are probably the best team in the NFC.

(Prediction: Loss, 3-2)

Week Seven—Saints at Dolphins

The Dolphins are a great team. They showed us last year what they can do. They will take a shot at the playoffs again. This will be an actual game, and it will be fun to watch it on TV.

I still have trust in my Saints though.

(Prediction: Win, 4-2)

Week Eight—Saints vs. Falcons

What can I say about the Falcons and what they did last year? Wow!

Matt Ryan was amazing; I didn't think he would turn the team around like that. Although most of the credit goes to Michael Turner and the defense, Ryan did great. I just don't think they will live up to the hype this year. It should be a fun game to watch though.

(Prediction: Win, 5-2)

Week Nine—Saints vs. Panthers

The Panthers make me laugh. After I saw what Jake Delhomme did in the playoffs, it's just too funny. This is still a great team. Steve Smith will have another great year. This game on the road won't be an easy one.

(Prediction: Loss, 5-3)

Week 10—Saints at Rams

The Rams...Let's just say this won't be a game that will be fun to watch. Watch another game, please. The Saints are going to kill them.

Although the Saints in recent years have been known to lose to bad teams when they should win, I don't think this will be the case this year. We will have a good time at this game.

(Prediction: Win, 6-3)

Week 11—Saints at Buccaneers

What can I say about the Bucs? Let me think, they are a great team, but with a rookie coach and without a good QB, it might not be as hard to beat them as I thought.

They are in the rebuilding process with a bunch of their veteran members gone. They did get Winslow, but one player does not make a team.

(Prediction: Win, 7-3)

Week 12—Saints vs. Patriots

This is a home game for the Saints, and what better day to play than Monday Night Football. This game will be watched by the entire nation. I just hope it's a close one.

The Patriots are a fun team to watch. What GM wouldn't want Tom Brady at quarterback? I say this would be an easy game if it was at the beginning of the year with Brady just starting to get the feel back, but that is not the case as it is late in the season.

What can I say? I just hope it's not too bad.

(Prediction: Loss 7-4)

Week 13—Saints at Redskins

The Redskins are still in search of a QB. This team won't be easy to beat. Last year, the Saints had a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter, which we let go of and lost. The Saints lost on a long touchdown pass to Randle El. This was mostly because of our safety and corner lack.

This year, I think it will be different. The Saints have added Darren Sharper, and the draft is always a good thing to look forward to.

(Prediction: Win, 8-4)

Week 14—Saints at Falcons

Yes, we are playing the Falcons again. Like I said before, they won't get the same hype. They won't make playoffs this year either. The Saints are ready for them by this time of the year, and it will be a good one to watch.

(Prediction: Win, 9-4)

Week 15—Saints vs. Cowboys

Well, what can I say about Tony Romo? This team has always been fun to watch, and now with Terrell Owens out of the way, what will happen?

Sean Payton loves beating his old team, as we saw happen in 2006. I think it will end the same way.

(Prediction: Win, 10-4)

Week 16—Saints vs. Buccaneers

The Bucs again. Well, it's hard to beat the Bucs both times in the season. It will be the same thing again this year. I don't know how good the game will be, but it should be an OK one.

(Prediction: Loss 10-5)

Week 17—Saints at Panthers

The Saints probably should be in the playoffs by this time. It isn't smart to get one of your starters hurt either. I think they let this one slip while they prepare for the playoffs.

(Prediction: Loss, 10-6)

Ten and six is not bad. That is how I think our season will play out. Let's hope I am right.

Join in on the discussion at Signature Sports

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2009 Schedule Breakdown

For the second time in three years, the Bucs will not be playing a nationally televised game. They also have a pretty tough schedule for a team with a rookie Head Coach and a lot of young players. Here's a look at the 2009 schedule for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Week One: vs Dallas Cowboys
Only once in the last six years prior to this have the Bucs opened up their season at home. This year they draw the Cowboys on opening week in their own building.

The last time Tony Romo played the Bucs was Thanksgiving 2006 and he threw for five touchdowns, that likely won't happen, but the Bucs have their hands full on opening day. They've lost opening day two years straight and overall have a poor opening day record, that will likely continue.

Prediction: Loss (0-1)

Week Two: at Buffalo Bills
For the first time ever...the Bucs will be playing in Buffalo. These two have played each other eight times, all eight in Tampa. Marshawn Lynch will be suspended for this game, so it's a winnable road game early in the season. Good to avoid Buffalo in the cold too.

Prediction: Win (1-1)

Week Three: vs New York Giants
Another toughie. Derrick Ward will go up against his former team, but the Giants are probably just too good for the Bucs. Our only hope is we can show up and catch them sleeping in our building.

Prediction: Loss (1-2)

Week Four: at Washington Redskins
The Bucs have played three (four including playoffs) straight games against the Redskins in Tampa. But now the Pewter Pirates will go to DC to play Albert Haynesworth and the 'Skins. This is another winnable road game, but I'm not so sure we can do it.

Prediction: Loss (1-3)

Week Five: at Philadelphia Eagles
Ah, the Bucs/Eagles rivalry that was pretty darn good in the early 2000s. This has died down since we've not played each other much anymore. But this will be my upset pick for the Bucs of the year, they will show up to play Philly and get a surprise win.

Prediction: Win (2-3)

Week Six: vs Carolina Panthers
Since the creation of the NFC South...the Bucs are 2-5 at home against Carolina. This is a team that just has our number.

Prediction: Loss (2-4)

Week Seven: vs New England Patriots
Instead of Tom Brady and the Patriots coming to Tampa, both teams make the long overseas trip to London. I really do not like this, our only slim chance of an upset was having home field advantage But now that it's in London, this is likely going to be ugly.

Prediction: Loss (2-5)

Week Eight: Bye Week

After the London trip, the Bucs will get their week off. They've had a Week 10 bye week the last two years, so it's not unusual to have a later bye week.

Week Nine: vs Green Bay Packers
Last year when Aaron Rodgers came to Tampa, he threw three interceptions as the Bucs beat Green Bay. Don't expect another awful showing from Rodgers, but I think the Bucs will be able to win this game on their home turf.

Prediction: Win (3-5)

Week 10: at Miami Dolphins
The Bucs will make a rare regular season trip to South Beach to play their instate buddies. Their pass game doesn't scare me, but Ronnie Brown should eat up our awful defensive tackles on the ground. But it will be a low scoring game, which unfortunately the Bucs lose.

Prediction: Loss (3-6)

Week 11: vs New Orleans Saints
Drew Brees and the Saints come into town for their annual visit. Brees is 1-2 in Tampa as a starter, his offense will likely have a good day. But the Bucs show up at home for this one.

Prediction: Win (4-6)

Week 12: at Atlanta Falcons
Matt Ryan combined for 0 touchdowns and four interceptions last season against the Bucs. But this defense has changed and Ryan will grow up. I don't think the Bucs will stand much of a chance in the Georgia Dome.

Prediction: Loss (4-7)

Week 13: at Carolina Panthers
The Bucs for some reason always seem to end up in Carolina at this time of the year. We will try to avoid the season sweep. But it's going to be tough in Carolina. Hopefully we don't get destroyed as badly as we did on Monday night last year...that was embarrassing.

Prediction: Loss (4-8)

Week 14: vs New York Jets
Uh oh! On-line rivalry with me and NYSR, hah. These teams are real similar on offense, and it should be a fun game. But it's in Tampa, so NYSR's boys will go home with an L...

Prediction: Win (5-8)

Week 15: at Seattle Seahawks
It's so weird, the Bucs hardly ever played the Seahawks in their first 30 years. But this is the fourth straight year playing Seattle, three of the year have been in Seattle. It's likely going to be colder in December, and a loonnng trip which the Bucs hardly win. Not a good sign.

Prediction: Loss (5-9)

Week 16: at New Orleans Saints
Luke McCown had a game to remember in the Superdome back in 2007, he led the league in passing yards that weekend and led the Bucs to a huge victory. Will he be the starter at the time? Who knows, but Bucs/Saints have produced some fun games over the last few years. Should be another good one.

Prediction: Loss (5-10)

Week 17: vs Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons for the most part struggle in Tampa. It's the final game of the year so you never know, but the Bucs will want to end their season on a good note playing against their rivals.

Prediction: Win (6-10)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: A Look Inside The Roster

Quarterbacks:

Luke McCown, Brian Griese, and Josh Johnson are the current QBs for the Bucs.

The obvious front runner for the starting job is McCown, the Bucs are high on him because he's young, athletic, and has a strong arm. Other than one game against the Saints, he has yet to show the ability to play on a high level in the NFL though. Look for the Bucs to add another QB before training camp.

Backfield:

The Bucs have a lot of solid players in their backfield, but that's about it. They all are solid. I think Derrick Ward could possibly flourish even more with a bigger role, but I'm not sure. Earnest Graham is a decent back, and Cadillac could maybe make an impact when he gets healthy. I doubt it though. Look out for Clifton Smith, he could possibly become a Darren Sproles like player.

Our FBs are real solid too, when healthy BJ Askew is one of the better FBs in the league and his backup Byron Storer is a good FB himself and a special teams ace.

Receivers/Tight Ends:

There is some very good play-makers here, but a lack of depth. At least at WR. Antonio Bryant is coming off an outstanding season and Kellen Winslow is one of the league's best TEs when healthy.

Jerramy Stevens is also a red-zone mismatch and two TE sets with him and Winslow can create some problems for defenses. John Gilmore will be used as the blocking TE. The depth at WR behind Bryant is not good...at all.

Michael Clayton hasn't caught 40 passes in a season since 2004, and the Bucs plan on him being the No. 2 guy after the money they paid him. Behind him there's a huge pile of crap battling it out for the No. 3 guy. Maurice Stovall, Paris Warren, Brian Clark, Kelly Campbell?

Ew. The Bucs will probably draft a WR somewhere in the draft, but it's no lock they are any better than these guys. Probably should've kept Ike Hilliard.

Offensive Line:

This may be the strongest position for now and the future for the Bucs. The interior line between Jeff Faine, Davin Joseph, and Arron Sears are one of the best in the league, and they all are very young. The OTs are meh, but they are good enough. Donald Penn has flashed potential a lot.

We also have a great young back in Jeremy Zuttah, who should be starting in the NFL. He can play every position on the line and is an absolute beast.

Defensive Line:

Here is the weak link on this team. Easily one of the worst defensive lines in the league. Gaines Adams has yet to live up to his hype, our DTs combined for half a sack last year and one of the two starters actually left. Greg "Stylez" White was a beast in 2007, but totally fell off last year. He's nothing more than a off the bench speed rusher for long 3rd downs.

Jimmy Wilkerson is a solid rotation man, but that's about it. The Bucs NEED to address this BADLY. It's absolutely terrible and we need an upgrade.

Linebackers:

This is very interesting. Our OLBs are a total mystery. We have young guys with potential like Geno Hayes, Quincy Black, and Adam Hayward who will get their chance. Plus, Angelo Crowell who had a beast 2007 for the Bills, will get a chance to rebound from a bad injury and could be a beast if healthy.

What's even more interesting, Jermaine Phillips is likely to get a look at OLB. He's played on a Pro Bowl level these last two years at SS, but they want to see how he works out at OLB. Barrett Ruud is of course, a monster and one of the best LBs in the league.

Secondary:

Aqib Talib had a great rookie season as the nickel-back, but he will now step up to be our number one CB. He's got great physical talent and play-making abilities, so I'm excited to see him in an even bigger role. I don't know why Ronde Barber is still on the roster, love the guy and what he's done here over the years...but he was awful last season.

With Buchanon gone, he's now stepping back into a starting role, when I expected him to be a NB. Elbert Mack may possibly make an impact this season too. Though, I expect another corner on draft day.

Safety we are okay at. The Bucs are trying to push Phillips out at SS and Sabby Piscitelli in, so look for him to start even if Jermaine doesn't work out at LB. Tanard Jackson is a young best too.

Kicking/Punting:

Matt Bryant will have competition in camp from Mike Nugent, who has a stronger leg. Bryant was unreliable from beyond 40 yards last season, it is possibly we keep both and use Nugent for kickoffs and long FGs only.

Josh Bidwell is a very good punter and there's nothing going on there.

Dan Klecko, Setting the Offensive and Defensive Standards

In the NFL, almost every player plays on one side of the ball, offense or defense (not including special teams). But one player is breaking that barrier: Daniel Klecko. He plays both offense and defense.

Some players have done this (most only excel at one position) but Dan has been simply amazing in both roles. Klecko can barrel up the gut and catch passes as a full back or stuff the run and sack the quarterback as a defensive tackle.

Dan Klecko, currently of the Philadelphia Eagles, was drafted in 2003 by the New England Patriots. This is where Klecko started excelling at fullback, where he blocked for five of the Patriots' nine rushing touchdowns all season.

Klecko lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl victory twice, earning himself his first two rings. After getting bored with coaching Tom Brady on how to be a good quarterback, Klecko left for the Indianapolis Colts.

In Indianapolis is where history was set. On December 31st, 2006, Dan Klecko scored his first NFL touchdown on a four-yard pass from his own protege, Peyton Manning.

Later that season Klecko caught another touchdown pass again the New England Patriots, his former team. The Colts went onto win that game after the huge moral boost from Klecko's touchdown. The Indianapolis Klecko's...I mean Colts, later went onto win the Super Bowl. This earned Klecko his third ring.

Then, on Mar. 14, 2008 Dan Klecko signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. This is one of the greatest dates in the Eagles history. The Eagles brought in Klecko to fill in for the open Full-back position, but Klecko also tabled at Defensive tackle.

In the first game of the 2008 season Dan Klecko sacked Rams Quarterback Marc Bulger. Klecko went on to rack up a career high two sacks in the season. This number may be lower then what you would expect from Klecko but he only played Defensive Tackle for the first five or six games.

Klecko finished the season with 4 tackles, 2 sacks*, 6 Receptions*, 36 Yards*, 6.0 YPC* (Yards per catch), and 2 first downs*. (Note: *= career high).

This is a season for the ages. Klecko has left his mark already, since he has gone to the Patriots, Tom Brady (Klecko's former protege got 50 Touchdowns in a single season and after he left the Colts, Peyton Manning (Klecko's other protege) won the NFL's MVP.

Klecko is no doubt a future Hall of Famer and not to mention a man everyone can look up to in his integrity, intensity, and ability to play football.

What the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Have Done and What They Need to Do

The firing of Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen
As soon as the season ended, I was calling for this to happen. Sure Gruden won the Bucs a Super Bowl in 2002.

But what has he done since? Sure there is two division titles, but they lost in the first round both times and we had as many top five draft pick seasons as division title seasons. Gruden's ego and lack of trust in young players is what did him in, IMO.

Allen could've stayed, but I wont' complain, he was a Gruden guy so I can see why.
How I rate the move: 5/5

Hiring Raheem Morris and Mark Dominik
Morris is a guy I've been high on. He came back and took over the DB coaching job in 2007 and revived the career of Jermaine Phillips and made Tanard Jackson and Aqib Talib beasts in their rookie seasons.

A lot of comparisons to Mike Tomlin, doubt he has the same success, this isn't Pittsburgh, but they are similar coaches with similar backgrounds. I'm not too thrilled about Dominik personally, he's worked in the FO under Bruce Allen and we should've gone for new blood at GM.
How I rate the move: 4/5

The big cuts
This was a tough pill to swallow. Derrick Brooks is the greatest Buccaneer of all time. A defensive POTY, 11 time Pro Bowler, and Super Bowl champ. But his play has drastically suffered these last two years, and it's time to go younger.

Galloway was an obvious cut, he's washed up and lazy to boot. Dunn I'm cool with, love the little guy but his age showed at the end of the season and upgraded the position anyways.

Cato June is a terrible fit for our new defense, and really isn't any good to begin with. Ike Hilliard kinda disappointed me, he may be old. But the guy has some of the most reliable hands in the league.
How I rate the move: 5/5

Trading for Kellen Winslow
This was a surprise. We all knew Winslow getting dealt was a possibility, but on the first day of FA? I wouldn't think the Bucs would be a team to pursue him anyways.

We really don't need TEs, but we do need playmakers on offense, and Winslow is a hell of a play-maker if he can stay healthy. I love the move, but it will all depend on the health. Well worth the risk though, IMO.
]How I rate the move: 5/5

Signing Derrick Ward
Our only notable FA pickup. Kinda disappointing with all the cap space, but Ward is a very good pickup. Behind our talented young o-line and zone blocking scheme, I expect him to get over 1,000 yards again. He and Graham will make a solid, underrated 1-2 punch in the running game.
How I rate the move: 5/5

Re-signing Jermaine Phillips and Jerramy Stevens
Great move. Especially with how cheap Phillips' deal was. Jermaine is one of the best guys in the league you don't know about. A poor man's Ed Reed.

Stevens is also a very good TE. He and Winslow in two TE sets will create major mismatches, and it's depth in case Winslow gets hurt, a realistic possibility.
How I rate the move: 5/5

Adding Nugent and Koutovides
Yeah, none of you care about this. But the Bucs added K Mike Nugent and LB Niko Koutovides. Nugent will give Matt Bryant competition to be the kicker, which was needed, so it's solid.

Niko is also a solid addition for our special teams. With guys like Geno Hayes and Quincy Black likely getting a good shot at starting, we need replacements for them on special teams.
How I rate the move: 3/5

Recap:

I'm disappointed in the lack of moves, we could use some more guys to add through FA. But I did like the moves we DID make. So far a solid off-season for the Bucs.

Looking ahead:

We have needs at QB, WR, DE, DT, OLB, and CB right now. DT being the biggest need. Hopefully we sign Angelo Crowell, then OLB would be fine to not draft anyone at least. Expect the Bucs to use their first rounder on either a QB, DT, or CB.

The QB would likely be Josh Freeman (or Jay Cutler if we trade for him), Jeria Perry is a possibility. But we may go for a better value pick with a CB. I hope we go with talent over need though.

The Greatest Rivalry in North American Sports: The Red Sox & Yankees

Written by Signature Sports member Razor.

Red Sox and Yankees. Babe Ruth is a good place to start. I'd just like to state that both clubs had housed Babe Ruth, who is the best and most known baseball player of all time.

So you know, same old stuff, 1919, the Red Sox traded several players to the New York Yankees, most notably Babe Ruth. I'd like to thank Harry Frazee for selling one of the best players of all time [Babe Ruth] to finance some musical play; however, I'm not going to blame him too much because Ruth was asking for $20,000 a year, which he [Frazee] just couldn't afford and that Ruth was a troublemaker.

To end it at that, Babe Ruth was a huge factor in the birth of this rivalry, especially after the Red Sox crashed into a below .500 winning percentage streak that lasted until 1934, and that the Yankees were emerging with Babe Ruth as their back bone.

Before the trade of Ruth, the Red Sox had a league record of five total World Series victories, but that all came to a change when the Yankees lineup, nicknamed "Murderers Row" had won four World Series, which made it seem like they had not just only traded players, but their rankings on the standings.

Especially now that the Farzee had just kept trading away his players to the Yankees for more and more cash, hence landing the Red Sox in last place, and the Yankees to World Series victories. With all these great players coming in, good season finishes, and money to buy more great players.

From the time Babe Ruth was sold up till the new century, the Yankees had won the World Series an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G 26 times, while over an span of about 85 years, the Red Sox couldn't even get one World Series win.

However, they made it four times, but let up in four games to three, and of course how can we forget possibly the biggest error in baseball, a soft groundball to Bill Buckner, which of course went through his legs. So close to a WS victory, but ends on an error that shouldn't even be happening for 12-year-old players.

2003 ALCS, a bench clearing brawl was brought to the point were ole Don Zimmerman tried to talk it up into Pedro Martinez' face, only to get a mouth full of dirt and grass. Game Seven was just around the corner, and boy did it really shock.

Grady Little decided to keep Martinez in the game, after he was noticeably starting to wear down, letting runners on base. Aaron Boone, who had been hitting below .200 in the post season had nailed a bomb to end the series, Yankees win.

Then, of course, one of the most memorable playoff series ever, 2004, ALCS, Red Sox down three games to none against the Yankees, and yet through the bloody socks, the Red Sox pulled a huge win, which would end baseballs third longest World Series drought.

Is it safe to wear Red Sox gear in New York, or Yankees gear in Massachusetts? Well, I'm not 100 percent sure about that. When you get to the point were opposing fans are getting beaten up by the other teams fans for wearing the apparel just really brings it over the line.

Speaking of apparel, how about that rumor of a David Ortiz jersey in the concrete at the new Yankee Stadium. Yeah, I guess the Yankees were trying to not cause injuries, from what they said, and to be nice they donated the shirt to the Jimmy Fund?

Nice try Yanks, but seriously, we've all seen what has happened between these two teams over the years, and who knows, maybe if that guy never told the media about the shirt, the curse could of been on you? I can see it now, "The Curse of the Big Papi."

Nikolai Khabibulin: Four Years, $27 Million Down the Drain

When Chicago signed Nikolai Khabibulin, they never knew the result that they were going to get.

At $6.75 million per year over four years, he seemed like a pretty good deal at the time, but he ended up not to be.

In the previous season, Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup with a great offence and defence. Khabibulin also had his best run in his career.

Before that run, Khabibulin had only won one playoff series for his respective team. His G.A.A. wasn't spectacular and his consistency wasn't at the best.

As soon as Khabibulin won the Cup, he seemed like the goaltender of the future, but that proved to be wrong. In 2005, with the salary cap at only $39 million, Nikolai signed his deal. Comparing the salary-salary cap ratio, that would be over $9.5 million in today's NHL—as much as Alexander Ovechkin makes on average!

In his first season, he had 17 wins, 26 losses, no shutouts, a goals-against average of 3.35 and a stunning save percentage of 0.886. Remember, he was the highest-paid goaltender at the time and he still is.

He ended up getting injured, but that was just the beginning.

In Nikolai's second season, he got 25 wins, 26 losses and five OT losses. His GAA and save percentage were up, but they still were a lot lower then normal NHL Standards. In Nikolai's third season, he did a bit better but still not good enough to get a pretty solid Chicago Blackhawks team into the playoffs.

This season, he's fighting for the role of starter with Cristobal Huet, who is also making tons of money. Also, he was reportedly placed on waivers before the season even started but nobody even claimed him. It just shows that his salary is too high for his playing ability and expertise.

Don't get me wrong, Nikolai is not a bad goalie—he's just not good enough at the salary that he's currently getting. His injuries have cost this Blackhawks team several times.

Let us all hope that Nikolai can capitalize on his last chance at proving his worth, his salary and that he can actually play at a solid level in the new, revamped National Hockey League.

Alex Smith: Six Years, $49.5 Million of Garbage (Written 10/28/08)

Written by Signature Sports member The Killa.

When Alex Smith was drafted with the first pick in the 2005 NFL draft out of Utah, the San Francisco 49ers expected a centerpiece to the start of a new San Francisco dynasty.

What they got was the exact opposite.

In Alex Smith's first three seasons taking snaps, he started 32 games, threw for 19 touchdowns and managed 31 interceptions, but Don't worry it gets better.

Alex Smith's 19 touchdowns and 31 interceptions led him to having a 63.5 completion rating. Alex Smith wasn't considered a complete an utter bust in 2006 though, when he threw for 16 touchdowns and 16 interceptions with a 74.8 passing rating!

These look almost one-third as good of the stats somebody who is getting roughly $8.25 million per year!

Alex Smith now is proving to be even more of a waste of money towards the 49ers franchise by backing up J.T. O'Sullivan at the quarterback position, up until Monday night this season.

What happened Monday night you ask? Well, J.T. O'Sullivan was demoted to backup quarterback. Alex Smith with another chance to prove himself, right? Not one bit. Instead, they have promoted Shaun Hill as the starting quarterback. That makes two unheard of players starting over Alex Smith now.

There is no other player in professional sports who is more overpaid than the constantly disappointing Alex Smith. The only thing consistent about Alex Smith is that you almost always know he will throw an interception if he plays for one game.

His star days at Utah and the days of him being considered a top quarterback in the future are long gone. Alex Smith is not only a bust, but he is the most overpaid athlete in professional sports.

Fanhood and Pride? New York Mets Fans Get the Nod (Written Oct. 28, 2008)

Written by Signature Sports Global Moderator nymetsfan1575.

Bias? No. Just the straight up truth. With their loyalty and refusal of disbandment from their team (except for the case of SS member Moss81) these fans are the real deal.

Many people hop on and off the Yankees' bandwagon because of their 26 World Series rings. Others jump onto the Giants because of their recent Super Bowl victory. Let's not forget about the Knicks.

Through many decades, they were a strong-built team and carried a lot of history. Hockey fans are a league of their own, but Rangers fans carry enough history with them to attract "groupies."

What makes Mets fans so special is their ability to come back and cheer on their home-town team through thick and thin. Cue the last three MLB season, where the collapse was unbearable and many of fans were laughed at. But these fans continue to do one thing the Mets are known best for.

A solitary word that was the cornerstone of the 1969 World Series: believe.

These fans aren't cocky either. They know what it's like to collapse. Never once have I seen these fans rub a victory in the opposition's face. The word respect enters play. Yankees fans continuously rub it that they have 26 rings.

Hey morons, about 10 of them came with six teams in the league. Giants fans will give you the 'ol "WE MADE THE PATRIOTS 18-1!" monotonous line. Yeah, we get it. You beat the Patriots. Something the Jets haven't done in seven years. Give them a break though. 1969 Miracle Mets ring a bell?

Through all the boneheaded moves up at the front office—cue the Scott Kazmir trade—they always find a way to pull through. Always looking to the future, these fans suffice everything they have. Well, except Luis Castillo.

No one can forgive GM Omar Minaya for extending his contract for four hopeless years. But none the less these fans take Minaya's word on the comeback of Castillo in which a plan was made to revive the second baseman back to full form.

Queens is where the true fans lie. Through the good and bad, they keep coming back. You may hear some 'boo's' through out the crowd but can you help it? Jets fans boo Brett Favre even during a win. Here's to fans that never give up hope and keep believing.

Top Two Recievers in the NFL (Written July 26, 2008)

Written by Signature Sports member Certified74.

1. Randy Moss

Since joining New England, Randy Moss has bought that spark back into his career. As we all know, in Oakland, he was on the decline. But he has been given an future Hall-of-Fame QB.

Now that he as Tom Brady throwing him picture-perfect passes, he is a force to be reckoned with. As we all know, in Minnesota, Daunte was not the best QB, throwing poor passes to Moss, but Moss being young and fast had the ability to get the ball and still make a big play.

This past season, Randy Moss has set NFL records with QB Tom Brady. Randy seems to be at the top of his game. But having Tom Brady throwing you passes cant get better, so this Brady-Moss combo shall be a force for a more upcoming seasons.

2. Terrell Owens

Since leaving Philadelphia to join one of the NFL's most established franchises, the Dallas Cowboy, Owens has seen the end zone numerous times. It's not that often you see a wide receiver catching 28 TD passes in two years.

This Romo-Owens combination seems to provide Dallas with that threatening offence. Also, T.O. still has the speed to dominate despite his age. Even tho his attitude leaves some question marks hands down, his ability on the field is undeniable.

In the 2007-2008 season, T.O. landed fifth in receiving yards with 1,355, behind Reggie Wayne, Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, and Chad Johnson.
