Exclusive Interview: Houston Texans Ambassador Ken Houston

Former Houston Oilers and Washington Redskins defensive back Ken Houston spent his entire 14-year career disrupting the offensive rhythm of opposing teams. Known as one of the greatest defensive backs in NFL history, Houston imposed a substantial amount of fear in quarterbacks while altering the routes of wide receivers.

The 12-time Pro Bowl safety achieved numerous honors throughout his decorated Hall of Fame career, including being named to the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team and the 1970s All-Decade Team. In 1999, Houston ranked No. 61 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 greatest football players of all time.

Coming out of Dunbar High School in Lufkin, TX, Houston possessed the proper attitude and mindset necessary for being a successful football player. Despite drawing little interest from NCAA Division I programs, he accepted a scholarship to play college football at Prairie State College (now Prairie View A&M University).

“It was an exciting time in my life,” said Houston, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986. “I was hungry to become a better football player. Prairie State was the only school willing to offer me a scholarship. I’ve always had a strong work ethic and I took advantage of my opportunity to get better as a football player and person.”

For a short time, he played center before starting at linebacker. Ultimately, Houston emerged as an impact defensive player, earning All-Conference in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. His willingness to learn and desire to improve opened the door for greatness.

He was selected by the Houston Oilers in the ninth round of the 1967 AFL-NFL Draft. After two games into his rookie season, Houston assumed the starting role at free safety.

Oilers head coach Wally Lemm took notice of his free safety’s unique talent during the fifth game of the regular season when Houston returned an interception and blocked a field goal attempt for touchdowns.

“Everything was starting to come together for me,” he said.

“I wanted to be the best safety in the league and never settled for less. My coaches would tell anyone that I frequently asked questions and wanted to excel in our defensive scheme. While playing for the Oilers, I learned how to cut off receivers’ routes and create havoc for quarterbacks.”

Houston was one of the best at making offenses aware of his presence on the field. After six years with the Oilers, he was traded to the Redskins in 1973 for five veteran players. The legendary safety escalated his dominance under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach George Allen.

As a member of the Redskins, Houston was selected to seven straight Pro Bowls. He played alongside Hall of Fame quarterback Sunny Jurgenson, running back John Riggins and defensive end Deacon Jones.

“My tenure in Washington will forever be special to me,” Houston said. "Playing for George (Allen) and having the pleasure of being teammates with a group of talented guys molded me into a Hall of Fame player. I learned how to impact the game from a defensive standpoint.

"I made it tough for wide receivers to get position and make plays. My pro football career was an incredible journey, especially since I was offered only one scholarship coming out of high school.”

After retiring from the NFL in 1980, he went on to coach for Wheatley High School and Westbury High School in Houston, Texas. He returned to the Oilers as the defensive backs coach from 1982-86 and occupied the same role for the University of Houston from 1986-1990.

While coaching at UH, former Detroit Lions quarterback Andre Ware became the only player in school history and the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy in 1989.

Currently, Houston serves as a “Houston Texans Ambassador” and participates in several Hall of Fame functions. Overall, the Texans organization set a long-term goal of becoming the most community-connected sports franchise in all of professional sports.

Houston, along with Kenny Burrough, Curtis Duncan, Charlie Frazier, Jacob Green, Jerry LeVias, Bubba McDowell, Zeke Moore, J.J. Moses, Vernon Perry, Jaime Sharper, Don Trull, Richmond Webb and Kailee Wong, represent the honor and integrity of the Texans' organization throughout the community.

“I enjoy my work with the Texans,” said Houston, who became an ambassador in 2006. Honestly, it’s fun to meet-and-greet fans. Often, people come up to me and talk about football, my career and how they remember my playing days in Houston and Washington. I’m very approachable and love discussing the game with people.”

Five Most Effective Players For Houston Texans In 2008

NFL football teams win games through the utilization of strengths while capitalizing on mistakes, creating turnovers, managing ball control and exploiting opponent’s weaknesses

When determining a team’s five most effective players during a season, several evaluation tools come into play. Basically, one looks for a player’s ability to add a new dimension to the game. It’s more than just saying that a player is a great quarterback, receiver, running back or records a substantial amount of interceptions, sacks or tackles on defense.

Sometimes, the player who doesn't get the recognition is the key component for a successful play. Also, it takes dedication on the player's part to execute the playbook within the particular offensive or defensive schemes. For the Houston Texans, the following were the five most effective players on the 2008 squad:

1) Andre Johnson

Pound for pound, the best wide receiver in the NFL. He led the league in receptions (115) and receiving yards (1,575 yards). Johnson recorded his first 200-yard game of his career Dec. 14 at home against the Tennessee Titans.

He tied a career high with eight touchdowns while thriving in the Texans' traditional XYZ formation.

Johnson lines up on the opposite side of tight end Owen Daniel and No. 2 receiver Kevin Walter. Can overpower most top cover corners with his ability to beat "bump and run" coverage.

Even when defensive backs cut off his routes, he finds a way to get open. Creates double and triple teams, allowing QB Matt Schaub to spread the ball around the field.

If Johnson draws a triple team and either TE Owen Daniels or No.2 receiver Kevin Walter makes the reception, the former University of Miami standout did his job.

2) Steve Slaton

The 2008 third-round draft pick excelled in Gary Kubiak’s offensive scheme last season. Slaton led all rookies with 1,282 rushing yards (a franchise record) on 288 carries, averaging 4.8 yards per carry.

He added another 377 yards on 50 receptions. The Texans intended to make Slaton a third-down back back, but he emerged as the team’s No. 1 back after an injury to Ahman Green.

Finished sixth in the NFL in rushing. Lacks prototypical size (5-foot-9, 203 pounds), but makes up for it with blazing speed. Ideal running back for the team’s zone blocking scheme. Can slash and cut back to find the open hole.

Slaton expects to get hit hard based on head coach Gary Kubiak's offensive scheme. The success of the Texans depends on him staying healthy over the course of the regular season. Currently, Houston still lacks an adequate backup.

3) Mario Williams

The No. 1 pick of the 2006 NFL Draft has emerged into a Pro Bowl defensive end. His size (6-foot-6, 283 pounds) is enough to intimidate opposing offensive linemen and quarterbacks.

Selected to his first Pro Bowl as a starter last season after recording 12 sacks and 53 tackles. Had three sacks and one forced fumble in the team’s first ever appearance on Monday Night Football.

More than just a prototypical defensive lineman in a 4-3 style of defense. His presence on the field alters the success of opposing offenses. His talent and skills makes him a threat on any given play.

Williams improved several technical weaknesses from his 2006 rookie campaign, which resulted in 14 sacks for the former NC State All-American in 2007. Keeps his feet on the ground and uses short, quick steps. No longer uses long strides to get to the quarterback.

4) Dunta Robinson

The Texans’ star cornerback returned last season in week 7 from a potential career threatening torn right ACL and hamstring injury suffered on Nov. 4, 2007 against the Oakland Raiders.

Team finished with a 7-4 record upon his returned to the lineup. Considered one of the best cover corners in the NFL. Thrives in the Texans’ “cover 2” defensive back scheme. Presents an exciting one-on-one matchup against opponent’s No. 1 receiver. Ranks as one of the most effective “bump and run” corners.

Can get his hands in the right position to disrupt a wide receiver’s route. Robinson has the ability to watch his opponent’s belt buckle and take away four of five potential routes a wide receiver can run on a given play.

Quarterbacks tend to throw away from him during games. Recently, he became the first Texans player in history to be given the franchise tag.

5) Jacoby Jones

The third-round draft pick out of Lane College in 2007 impacts the Texans on special teams. Football is a game of field position.

In order for an offense to thrive, it’s the responsibility of special teams and the kick or punt returner to give the offense great field position and protect the football.

In 2008, Jones averaged 12.1 yard per punt return on 32 returns. He ran back two punts for touchdowns and recorded six returns of 20+ yards and two for 40+ yards. His longest return was for 73 yards.

Was susceptible to fumbles at times, but overall, proved to be a valuable commodity in establishing solid field position for the Texans’ offense.

Honorable mentionees: TE Owen Daniels, LB DeMeco Ryans, QB Matt Schaub, OL Chester Pitts

Kubiak Looks to Plug Remaining Holes On Roster

When the Houston Texans hit the field for training camp, the team will officially begin its eighth season as a franchise. Since the 2002 NFL Draft, the Texans have struggled with inconsistent play on the field and ineffective decision-making rolling over from the Charley Casserly era.

Slowly, Houston has progressed into an 8-8 team, but not at the rate owner Bob McNair expected to achieve.

From 2002 to 2005, the front office demonstrated certain irrationalities when drafting players and lacked the desire to pursue top-notch free agents. The majority of Casserly’s draft picks turned out to be a bust, especially QB David Carr, the No. 1 pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. Ironically, offensive lineman Chester Pitts remains the lone member on the active roster from the inaugural 2002 draft class.

Despite the number of appalling draft choices over the four-year period, Casserly was able to help current head coach Gary Kubiak establish a benchmark with ideal, prototypical players for his particular offensive and defensive scheme.

When Kubiak accepted the job on Jan. 26, 2006, he inherited All-Pro receiver Andre Johnson and cornerback Dunta Robinson. Both Johnson and Robinson possess the raw, natural talent to fit any type of pro system.

Kubiak made an immediate impact with his first draft class by selecting proficient, franchise players such as defensive end Mario Williams, middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans and tight end Owen Daniels. In his first season as head coach, the Texans finished fourth in the AFC South with a 6-10 record.

With one season under his belt, Kubiak began molding his players into his notable “Denver" syle of play. He utilized the 2007 NFL Draft by selecting DT Amobi Okoye with the 10th overall pick. Also, he added more pieces to the puzzle with the selection of WR/KR Jacoby Jones, cornerback Fred Bennett and linebacker Zac Diles.

Kubiak’s squad took a giant step forward in 2007 with an 8-8 record, marking the first time in franchise history that Houston finished at least .500.

In 2008, the Texans drafted a franchise left tackle in Duane Brown, who fits perfectly into Alex Gibbs’ "zone blocking" scheme, and superstar running back Steve Slaton. As the season progressed, Brown demonstrated significant improvement while Slaton emerged as the franchise running back.

Slaton concluded his rookie campaign with 1,282 rushing yards on 268 carries, including nine touchdowns. He accumulated the most rushing yards by a rookie in the league and ranked sixth in the NFL in rushing yards behind Adrian Peterson, Michael Turner, DeAngelo Williams, Clinton Portis and Thomas Jones.

For the 2009 NFL Draft, the Texans encountered one of the most important drafts in franchise history. When analyzing potential draft possibilities, Houston made a commitment to improve their front seven on defense by focusing on the selection of versatile athletes.

Kubiak and Smith filled the remaining holes in the front seven with the drafting of former USC linebacker Brian Cushing at No. 15 and University of Cincinnati defensive end Connor Barwin at No. 46.

Known for being an intense competitor, Cushing adds a new dimension to the Texans’ linebacking core, which already features a superstar in Ryans. The 6-2, 243 pound Cushing displays unique versatility with his ability to play all three linebacker positions.

Barwin, a former tight end, converted to defensive end for the Bearcats last season. He displays excellent footwork and provides the Texans with the type of pass rushing skills Kubiak desperately needs. Barwin can play both sides and go outside to rush the passer.

With several critical elements in place, the Texans may potentially have the greatest season in franchise history. Unlike previous years, Kubiak will head into training camp with an explosive offense and a young, talent core of defensive players.

During the offseason, Kubiak and Smith put their heads together to figure out how to elevate the team to the next level. Overall, they realize the team must add a run stuffing nose tackle, a pass rushing DE, an impact free safety, a strong outside linebacker and a backup, goal-line running back for Slaton.

Smith got his pass rusher by signing DE Antonio Smith to a five-year, $35 million contract. The former Arizona Cardinal defensive lineman had eight tackles and a sack in the Super Bowl and makes an ideal counterpart opposite Williams. Plus, Smith will be reunited with Bush, who was an assistant with the Cardinals prior to joining Houston’s staff.

Although things look promising, the Texans still need to address some present holes in the roster. As training camp approaches, Houston will keep their options open by watching the free agent market, paying attention to final cuts and developing the skills of in-house players.

It’s no secret that Kubiak has an escalating amount of frustration toward DT Travis Johnson, the team’s 2005 first-round (16th overall) draft pick. His lackluster work ethic combined with several on-field issues and injury history caused Kubiak and Smith to sign DT Shawn Cody as an unrestricted free agent.

Last season with the Detroit Lions, Cody finished with a career-high 37 tackles. Overall, the Texans chose not to draft a defensive tackle, meaning they have high expectations for Okoye and possibly Cody to anchor the team’s interior portion.

Houston’s pass defense ranked 17th and only intercepted 12 passes in 2008. After missing out on drafting former LSU safety LaRon Landry in 2007, Houston has been trying to find a prototypical free safety to fill a tremendous void. However, the only free safety worthy of being a first round pick this year would have been USC junior Taylor Mays.

Mays announced his intent to return to USC for his senior year, leaving University of Missouri’s William Moore as the top-rated safety in the draft. At 6-1, 230 pounds, Moore has the size and speed to be a playmaker in the NFL, but ultimately rated as a second-round pick at best.

Since the Texans elected not to pursue high-priced free agent Roy Williams, who was waived by the Dallas Cowboys on March 5, the All-Pro safety eventually signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Despite some outside pressure, Houston stood their ground by not going after the former University of Oklahoma standout, due to his overall ineffectiveness in pass coverage with the Cowboys.

Kubiak’s defense needs a safety capable of handling the pass, especially with perennial QB Peyton Manning in the division. With a bleak free agent market at safety, Houston re-signed Eugene Wilson to a three-year deal.

Basically, the Texans will continue to keep their options open for a backup running back to compliment Slaton. The Ahman Green experiment never worked out, so Kubiak will either stay in-house with Chris Brown, Ryan Moats, or give undrafted free agent Arian Foster or Jeremiah Johnson a fair shake to earn a roster spot.

Out of the potential in-house candidates, Brown is the biggest at 6-3, 220 pounds. Unfortunately, the former University of Colorado standout has a lengthy history of injuries during his six-year NFL career and can't be counted on to stay healthy over the course of the regular season.

Moats, Foster and (Jeremiah) Johnson have a similar build in comparison to Slaton, but Kubiak wants to find a goal-line back equivilant to Ron Dayne.

It won’t be surprising if the Texans take a strong look at the free agent market to address this need. Don’t expect free agent running backs Edgerrin James, Rudi Johnson or Deuce McAlister to wear a Texans’ uniform this season. It’s no secret that Kubiak likes (Rudi) Johnson; however, Houston would prefer a younger, more durable back to compensate Slaton.

Despite playing in a challenging AFC South Division with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans, the Texans believe they can clinch a playoff berth this season.

Throughout the season, opponents may look to expose the Texans’ weaknesses at safety by looking down the field for 20-yard completions or attempt to hit Slaton hard every time he carries the ball, especially if the Texans can’t find an ideal backup.

Since the Texans run the “zone blocking” scheme, Slaton will get hit harder than most running backs. Defenses have more time to react and hit Slaton at full speed as he looks to cut and slash through open holes.

Plus, with Slaton possessing a smaller frame, teams view him as a “hitable” back. Houston’s success will ultimately depend on him staying healthy and remaining on the field.

Both Kubiak and Smith know what's best for the Texans. Prior to the regular season, they will work out the final details necessary for putting the Texans in position to make its first ever postseason appearance.

Houston Texans Intend To Make Franchise History in 2009 Season

The Houston Texans continue to set ambitious, yet attainable goals for the 2009 regular season. Coach Gary Kubiak embarks on his fourth year at the helm after taking over a disgruntled team that finished 2-14 in 2005.

Now, with several critical elements in place, owner Bob McNair expects his team to be a playoff-caliber squad. It’s realistic to believe the Texans can win at least 10 games this season based on their offensive firepower and talented, young defense.

Houston entered the offseason looking to assemble the right coaching staff. Kubiak had some holes to fill and took the initiative to hire guys who fit his overall coaching philosophy.

Last season, Kubiak showed discontent toward defensive coordinator Richard Smith. Overall, the Houston Texans’ offense ranked third in the NFL, but the defense finished 22nd. So, the Texans elected to fire Smith, defensive line coach Jethro Franklin, and secondary coach Jon Hoke.

Kubiak promoted senior defensive assistant Frank Bush to replace Smith as defensive coordinator. Bush, 46, understands Kubiak's philosophy and has the respect of the team's top defensive players.

Also, David Gibbs, son of Texans' offensive line coach/assistant head coach Alex Gibbs, officially replaced Hoke as secondary coach. Gibbs held the same job title over the past three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Texans possess young talent on defense, a Pro Bowl receiver in Andre Johnson and a solid quarterback in Matt Schaub, when he's able to stay healthy. What the Texans also have is Steve Slaton, one of the best young running backs in the league.

If Houston really does make that long-awaited leap to being a postseason contender, Slaton's contributions will factor heavily on the team's success.

When analyzing the strengths of the Texans, it all starts with Johnson. In six seasons, Johnson has 6,379 receiving yards on 486 receptions, including 33 touchdowns. He led the NFL with 1,575 receiving yards last season with Arizona Cardinals superstar receiver Larry Fitzgerald (1,431) finishing second and Carolina Panther’s Steve Smith (1,421) third.

It’s not just the exceptional stats which propelled Johnson into becoming the best receiver in the NFL. In fact, everything he does without the ball makes him the most dangerous player on the field.

Top corners do everything in their power to cover Johnson over the course of a game, yet the former University of Miami standout produces better than anyone off “bump and run" coverage.

Johnson has a way of getting his hands in the right position by using “swim” tactics to maintain position and get in front or a step behind defensive backs. This typically results in a catch for the two-time All-Pro receiver.

What makes him truly unique revolves around his ability to open up the field, especially for No. 2 receiver Kevin Walter and Pro Bowl tight end Owen Daniels.

Even when defensive backs contain Johnson, he finds a way to continue his routes and get open. Throughout the game, defenses have to make several adjustments by either double or triple teaming him. When Schaub looks Johnson way on a double team, he’ll end up finding a wide open Walter or Daniels down the field.

In a way, Johnson doesn’t always have to make a catch to be the most dominant player on the field.

Schaub established a benchmark as the team's starting quarterback last season. Overall, the Texans’ organization believes he can be one of the top quarterbacks in the AFC. He threw for 3,043 passing yards, completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 15 touchdowns and 10 INTs. Overall, Schaub averaged 276.6 passing yards per game in 2008 with a passer rating of 92.7.

The stats are impressive for the 27-year-old quarterback, but it requires more than just accumulating numbers to lead the Texans to their first ever postseason appearance. He must captain the offense in order to maintain aggressive play while protecting the football.

The Texans have a tendency to turn the ball over once they advance to their opponent’s side of the field. Schaub must step up and take responsibility for the offense. He's already earned the respect of his teammates. Now, if he continues to lead, the team will follow.

Heading into training camp, Slaton has full command of the starting running back position. As a rookie, Slaton finished sixth in the NFL with 1,282 rushing yards on 268 carries, including nine touchdowns, 13 runs of 20+ yards and five runs of 40+ yards.

With the offensive line more experienced in Gibbs’ “zone blocking” scheme, the Texans offense should put a substantial amount of points on the board this season.

Bush’s defense features the monstrous All-Pro DE Mario Williams. Last season, he amassed 12 sacks and 53 tackles in 15 games. In the Texans’ first ever Monday Night Football game at Reliant Stadium against Jacksonville, Williams recorded three sacks and one forced fumble.

The Texans signed former Arizona Cardinals DE Antonio Smith to a five-year, $35 million contract to fill the gap opposite Williams. With third-year DT Amobi Okoye, the team’s 2007 first-round pick plugging the middle, Houston expects to have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL.

By selecting former USC linebacker Brian Cushing with its 2009 first-round pick, the Texans finally addressed the strong outside linebacker position. In addition to All-Pro middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans and third-year linebacker Zac Diles, the overall front seven of Houston’s should be lethal and productive against opposing offenses.

It’s going to take an overall collaborative team effort for the Texans to produce double-digit wins this season. They must decrease their turnovers while creating more turnovers from a defensive standpoint.

Kubiak’s squad should put points on the scoreboard, but the defense needs to spend more time on the sidelines rather than on the field during games.

The secondary, featuring fluid cover corner Dunta Robinson, must rise to the challenge and prevent opposing quarterbacks, like Peyton Manning, from exposing certain weaknesses.

Injuries could possibly be the Achillies tendon, causing the team to fall short of accomplishing short-term and long-term goals. Johnson, Schaub and Slaton have to remain on the field in order to make the Texans a contender in the AFC South. A critical injury to Slaton will likely take the Texans out of playoff contention.

Unfortunately, in the "zone blocking" scheme, Slaton will find himself taking hard hits over the course of a game.

The simple, yet effective scheme creates open lanes for fast running backs to excel. Since Slaton constantly looks for open holes, it gives opposing defense more time to react and tackle him at full speed. If the Texans can’t find an ideal backup, an injury to Slaton will damage the running game and create havoc to the overall offense.

A great coaching staff will utilize strengths while finding ways to turn weaknesses into strengths. For the first time as Texans' head coach, Kubiak has the right coaching staff in place.

The players will be coached properly and should demonstrate a significant amount of improvement throughout the regular season. Based on their arsenal, it’s reasonable to believe this team will make franchise history with its first ever postseason appearance.

Ross Seaton Armed-and-Ready for Success

Houston Astros' right-handed prospect Ross Seaton possesses the necessary talent, mentality, competitive drive and work ethic to fit the profile of a prototypical, major-league caliber pitcher.

In June, 2008, the Astros selected Seaton, 19, as their third-round supplemental pick out of Second Baptist High School in Sugar Land, TX.

During his senior year, Seaton went 8-2 with a 1.32 ERA and 120 strikeouts over 74 innings.

The 6'4", 190 lb. right-hander’s fastball touches 96 mph on the radar gun and he has a repertoire of pitches featuring a nasty curveball, a freezing changeup, and his personal favorite, a low sinker.

“Second Baptist is the best school ever. It prepares a student to be successful in life and offers a Christian environment. My friends, coaches, and teammates made a significant difference in my life. I’m a stronger and better person because of my experiences in high school,” Seaton said.

Born in Oklahoma, Seaton’s family settled in Sugar Land, Texas, setting the stage for the young, talented prospect. His parents, Pat and Jane Seaton, encouraged him and his older sister, Samantha, to be leaders and set challenging, yet attainable goals in life.

“My mom and dad will forever be my biggest influences. My dad knows me better than anyone. We do everything together baseball wise. I love them so much and I’m so proud of my older sister, Samantha, who is studying law at Oklahoma University,” he said.

Despite living in Texas, Seaton admits he favors another college football team over the Texas Longhorns. “It’s tough to admit it, but I’m an OU football fan. You don’t want to say that living in Texas, but what can I say. I was born in Oklahoma and I enjoy watching Sam Bradford play quarterback for the Sooners. As a pitcher, I notice when other athletes have great arms. Bradford definitely has a cannon,” said Seaton.

Growing up, Seaton improved his game with the advice and positive influence of several former Astros players. Right-hander Brian Williams, who pitched for Houston from 1991-94, resides next door to the Seaton family in Sugar Land. Williams always made time to offer advice and pass knowledge along to the eager, young Seaton.

Also, former Astros standout Terry Puhl coached Seaton during his middle-school years. Puhl hit .280 with 62 homers, 435 RBIs, 1,361 hits and 217 stolen bases during his 15-year career.

In the 1980 NLCS, Puhl stole the show against the Philadelphia Phillies with the best performance ever by a hitter in a playoff series. His .526 batting average during the series has long been superseded, but his ability to analyze and coach ball players earned him the head coaching position at the University of Houston-Victoria.

“I taught Ross how to hit. This extraordinary young man possesses the tools, mentality and hunger to be a successful major league pitcher. He has a special leadership which inspires his teammates to win,” Puhl said.

In high school, Seaton continued developing his pitching skills with the assistance of Second Baptist head coach Jeff Schroeder and pitching coach Jeff Calhoun.

Calhoun played five seasons in the big leagues, including three with the Astros (1984-86). The retired former pitcher played a critical role in molding the youngster into an elite talent. Calhoun taught Seaton how to outsmart hitters using his entire arsenal of pitches.

By the time Seaton pitched his last game for Second Baptist, he had already climbed the draft boards and established himself as the top high school pitcher in Texas, according to Baseball America. In addition to his success on the field, Seaton earned a tremendous amount of respect from classmates off-the-field by graduating from Second Baptist as the 2008 valedictorian.

Known for its rigorous academics, Second Baptist produces Ivy League caliber students. Since his freshman year, Seaton has always been able to balance academics with baseball.

“I experienced a lot of sleepless nights in high school. I enjoyed taking AP History and English. The mentality, self-discipline, and work ethic it takes to be successful at Second Baptist will help me for the rest of my life. I am a better baseball player because I went to Second Baptist,” Seaton said.

His overwhelming popularity opened doors and created several options for the teenager. Seaton knew he would have to make a life-changing choice of either accepting one of the multiple scholarship offers from a big-time Division I school or sign his first professional contract.

“At first, I was really interested in signing with Duke University. The reputation of the school combined with its exceptional athletic tradition got me excited. Stanford, Rice, and Vanderbilt also recruited me. Ultimately, I want the best of both worlds—pitch in the big leagues and earn my college degree,” he said.

After graduation, Seaton decided he wanted to attend Tulane University on a full baseball scholarship. “I fell in love with Tulane on my visit. I was given the grand tour and felt at home on their campus. Plus, I wanted to serve as a positive role model in the community of New Orleans, especially after the damaging effects of the hurricane back in 2005. The academics, coaches, baseball tradition, and the team’s reputation of making the College World Series sold me,” Seaton said.

Seaton learned in June, 2008 how life can throw someone a curveball. The high-school phenom could have easily been selected in the first round of the amateur draft. Instead, teams avoided using a high draft pick on him since Seaton announced his intent to play ball for Tulane in the fall.

The Astros’ scouting department took notice of Seaton’s talent and maturity for his age. It’s risky to use a high draft pick on a prep star who intends to play college baseball. Houston was willing to take the daring risk and draft Seaton with its third-round supplemental pick.

Tal Smith, Astros president of baseball operations, refused to let Seaton go undrafted by his hometown team. Smith acknowledges Spring Wood’s Roger Clemens, Spring’s Josh Beckett, Cy Fall’s Scott Kazmir, and Seaton as the top four high school pitchers ever to come out of the Houston area.

In order to persuade Seaton to sign with the Astros, Smith and owner Drayton McLane needed to come up with a substantially high offer. McLane values Smith’s opinion when it comes to young ball players. When McLane heard Smith describe Seaton as “one of the best ever to come out of high school,” the Astros owner made it a priority to sign Seaton.

McLane decided to offer Seaton a signing bonus higher than Commissioner Bud Selig’s slotting system for a typical third-round compensation pick. The Astros’ owner offered him a $700,000 signing bonus to forgo his baseball scholarship to Tulane and a $252,000 college scholarship plan.

“My family and I weighed all of our options. I knew I would get drafted. After talking it over with my parents, the offer was high enough to give me an opportunity to fulfill my dream. I have a legitimate chance of playing for my hometown team in the near future and earning my college degree at the same time. I can live off my signing bonus and work my way up through the minors. I’m prepared for my next challenge in life—making the big leagues by the time I’m 20 or 21-years-old,” Seaton said.

Since Seaton didn’t sign with the Astros until late July, he made only three appearances with the Rookie-Advanced affiliate Greenville Astros. Seaton went 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA in four innings. Even though his ERA was unimpressive, he barely had time to get his feet wet.

Seaton arrived to Kissimmee, Florida this spring to attend Minor League Camp for the Astros. “It was very important for me to learn and succeed during camp. The organization evaluates your overall performance and assigns you to one of the minor league affiliate teams. I wanted to do my best so I could start the season as high as possible,” Seaton said.

Upon the conclusion of camp, Seaton was reassigned to Class A Lexington. From 2007-08, the Lexington Legends set franchise records in losses. This year, the Legends have an exceptional starting rotation featuring Seaton and Jordan Lyles, the Astros’ No. 5-ranked prospect. Unlike the previous two seasons, the Legends will contend for the Southern Atlantic League (SAL) divisional title.

So far this season, Seaton has demonstrated the reason why he ranks as the No.3 prospect in the Astros’ organization. In three starts, he is 2-1 with a 1.62 ERA, including 12 strikeouts and three walks over 16-and-two-thirds innings.

Since organizations tend to deal in the present, Houston’s pitching rotation, led by ace Roy Oswalt, has an average age of 33-years-old. Veterans Mike Hampton, Brian Moehler, and Russ Ortiz are short-term solutions for an aging Astros’ rotation who don’t factor into the team’s long-term plans.

Houston’s organization gets criticized for their quality of starting pitching and overall lack of depth. In the near future, the rotation might consist of highly-rated prospect Bud Norris, Felipe Paulino, Polin Trinidad, Seaton, and Lyles. This group of elite talent, along with Oswalt, could possibly make the Astros’ pitching rotation one of the most feared in the National League.

Bearing any potential setbacks, Seaton should continue progressing up the minor league ladder and could find himself in the majors within the next two or three years. Hopefully, general manager Ed Wade doesn’t make a vital mistake in trading Seaton to another organization for an aging, veteran player. Numerous teams will be interested in trading for a franchise-caliber ace like Seaton.

When breaking down his game, Seaton has the physic of a young Randy Johnson, the competitive mindset of a young Nolan Ryan, and the sophistication of a young Greg Maddux. The combination of brains, talent, and the desire to win make Seaton a natural leader who can grow into an All-Star ace.

Seaton welcomes the grueling mental grind of minor league baseball. “Right now, I need to get as much experience as possible and survive my first full season. It’s an adjustment period being away from home for the first time and not having to go to school. The focus revolves around getting better and working on my command,” he said.

The ambitious, young man knows exactly what he wants in life. “I’d like to get to the point where I can master throwing the ball anywhere I want. I’m eager to learn and keep developing. In a few years, my goal is to wear an Astros uniform and become a 20-game winner while leading my team to the playoffs and hopefully the World Series. I want to be successful as a Houston Astro,” said Seaton.

Cecil Cooper Can Breathe Temporary Sigh of Relief

Drayton McLane, Jr. spent the majority of his life building an exceptional business reputation as one of the greatest and most successful entrepreneurs in the United States.

The 72-year-old chairman and CEO of the Houston Astros understands the benefits, values and rewards of demonstrating a tremendous work ethic and applying personal knowledge and experience into making the Astros a prominent organization.

Since purchasing the Astros in 1993, McLane has watched his club blossom into a consistent National League contender with a history of special players like Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell representing the purity of the city of Houston.

In 1994, Bagwell became the fourth player in NL history to win the MVP Award unanimously, despite the strike-shortened season, hitting. 368 with 39 home runs and 116 RBIs in 400 at-bats. Bagwell’s .750 slugging percentage ranks as the highest by an NL player since Rogers Hornsby in 1925.

Overall, Houston managers have played an instrumental role in the success of the Astros during McLane’s tenure as owner. Former manager Larry Dierker won three consecutive divisional titles from 1997-99 and a fourth title in 2001. Dierker forever holds a special place in Astros’ history as a standout pitcher, broadcaster and successful manager.

He led the Astros to a record 102 wins during the 1998 season. McLane graded Dierker based on the team’s first-round playoff elimination in 1997 and 1999 by the Atlanta Bravesand All-Star right-hander Kevin Brown and the San Diego Padres in 1998.

Former manager Phil Garner led the team to the 2004 NLCS against the St. Louis Cardinals, but fell short of making the World Series. In 2005, the Astros defied the odds and and appeared in the World Series for the first time in franchise history.

Despite being swept by the Chicago White Sox, this marked the first occasion in which the World Series was played in the state of Texas.

The Astros have built a database of cherished memories and a collection of extraordinary players who received the honor of wearing the sacred uniform. Despite so many precious moments, McLane tends to be over-involved rather than leaving the critical decision-making skills up to the general manager, manager and coaches.

Believe it or not, the pleasant, wealthy businessman from Cameron, Texas, who walks around with a warm, fuzzy smile, can be extremely tough and demanding toward his employees.

McLane wants to win and places a substantial amount of pressure on his general manager Ed Wade and manager Cecil Cooper. He will do everything possible to put the most talented group of players on the field by refusing to go through a rebuilding season.

Realistically, a team can’t win or appear in the World Series every season. Baseball history proves it’s nearly impossible. He won't spend ridiculous sums of money like George Steinbrenner, but typically sports one of baseball's highest payrolls.

Instead of developing the young talent, McLane gives the thumbs up to trade the organization’s top prospects in exchange for established veterans.

By following this policy, Houston has a tendency to feature one of the oldest teams in the majors. For example, the Astros dealt pitching prospects Matt Albers and Troy Patton, along with Luke Scott, to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for aging All-Star shortstop Miguel Tejada on Dec. 12, 2007.

Tejada later admitted in April, 2008 that he’s been lying about his age since signing his first Major League Baseball contract in 1993. He was actually born in 1974 and not 1976, creating a unfavorable shock to Houston’s organization.

In a way, the managerial job continues to be a revolving door since the arrival of McLane. Cooper became the sixth manager under McLane when offered the job of a full-time basis on Sept. 28, 2007.

Entering the 2009 season, McLane’s collection of managers featuring Art Howe (1993), Terry Collins (1994-'96), Dierker (1997-2001), Jimy Williams (2002-'04), Garner (2004-'07) and Cooper (2007-present) have combined for a respectable 1,350-1,176 (.534) record.

McLane fired every one of his managers, leaving Cooper with virtually a hopeless fate. Howe was fired after the 1993 season in favor of Collins. In his three years, Collins didn't experienced one losing season, but at the same time, never won a divisional title, finishing second each season.

Dierker actually won four divisional titles in his five seasons as manager, but was pushed out the door based on his team’s inability to make it out of the first round of the playoffs.

Williams always carried a positive reputation as a remarkable teacher with the ability to develop the skills of infielders. He led the Boston Red Sox to wild card berths from 1998-'99 and took over the helm in Houston before the 2002 season. He was ultimately replaced after the 2004 All-Star Game in Houston by Garner.

Despite leading the 2005 team to the World Series, Garner was fired along with GM Tim Purpura on Aug. 27, 2007.

Cooper completed his first full year as Astros manager last season. Before the start of this season, there was speculation surrounding Cooper’s future. He led the team to the best National League record after the All-Star break, but entered the season in the last year of his contract

Based on McLane’s track record of firing managers, it’s inevitable that Cooper will eventually be ousted from his position. For now, McLane picked up the option on Cooper’s contract through the 2010 season according to a Houston Chronicle report.

The 60-year-old skipper can breathe a temporary sigh of relief, but recognizes his precarious situation under McLane.

Rumors circulating baseball grew stronger that Cooper could be on the hot seat after the Astros’ slow start in Spring Training and the regular season. McLane wants the team to remain focused and not be distracted by the rumors surrounding Cooper.

Not including this season, Cooper has a respectable 101-91 record as Houston's manager.

It’s a difficult task to ask someone to pour their complete heart and soul into a job with a bleak future. For now, McLane will give Cooper at least two years to generate a winning team. Even if Cooper wins and takes the team to the playoffs, it won’t be surprising to see a new manager sitting in the dugout leading the team in 2011.

Houston Astros' Mark Saccomanno Close To Making Dream a Reality

Houston Astros prospect Mark Saccomanno fulfilled his lifelong dream on September 8, 2008 by putting on a big league uniform for the first time.

The native Houstonian spent his childhood rooting for the Astros and left a memorable impression at Minute Maid Park during his major league debut.

Saccomanno's baseball journey has taken its fair share of bumps and bruises. The six -year minor league veteran established a positive reputation by demonstrating remarkable character, a tremendous work ethic and the willingness to persevere through setbacks.

Originally, Saccomanno was not part of the group of September callups. "During the month of August, I kept dreaming of making my major league debut in my hometown in front of family and friends. It was a nightmare when I learned I wasn't on my way to Houston," Saccomanno said.

Former Astros third baseman Ty Wigginton, who signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles this offseason, suffered a groin injury in early September, prompting the organization to call up Saccomanno from Triple-A Round Rock.

He received the call at 2:30 p.m. to join the team that night for a 7:05 p.m. home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Saccomanno frantically called family and friends to deliver the exciting news and rushed to get ready for a 4:30 p.m. flight from Austin to Houston.

Saccomanno arrived barely before game time and immediately jumped into his Astros' uniform without taking batting practice. Manager Cecil Cooper elected to use Saccomanno as a pinch hitter for starter Alberto Arias in the fifth inning. He nervously approached the plate and faced Pirates' starter Ian Snell in his first Major League at-bat.

Without a blink of an eye, Saccomanno became a household name in the city of Houston after crushing Snell's first offering into the right field bullpen for an opposite field solo home run. He rounded the bases with his father Ed, mother Cissy and former Klein Forest High School teammates cheering from the stands.

"The strength of my game is combining a solid batting average with power. I jumped on Snell's first pitch and drove it to right field. It was strange because at Round Rock, fly balls heading to deep right tend to die in the wind. When I connected on the pitch, I raced out of the batter's box remembering the wind. By the time I rounded first, I hearded the roar of the crowd and realized what had happened," said Saccomanno.

Saccomanno solo blast snapped a scoreless tie and triggered a three-run inning to lead Houston over the Pirates 3-2. He became the fourth player in franchise history to homer in his first career at-bat and the 22nd all-time to homer on the first pitch.

During his September stint, Saccomanno hit .200 (2-for-10) with a homer and two RBIs. He faced Chicago Cubs' right-hander Carlos Zambranoduring the All-Star's no-hitter in the Hurricane Ike makeup game. Saccomanno doubled off Atlanta Braves' James Parr to record his second career hit.

"I love the good, tight battle of a close game, especially in front of a packed house with the home crowd cheering for their team to win. The game is dramatic all the way to the final out," he said.

The Astros re-signed Saccomanno to a minor league deal January 5, 2009 with an invitation to Spring Training as a non-roster player. He showed glimpses of success during the spring, but was reassigned to minor league camp.

Even though Saccomanno expected to start the season in Round Rock, he welcomed the challenge of competing alongside the standout players. Cooper placed him in the same workout group with superstars Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee and Miguel Tejada. Saccomanno took advantage of his opportunity to learn from some of the greatest players in baseball.

"Berkman, Lee and Tejada are great guys. They help you relax, causing your natural ability to shine. What's amazing about a big league clubhouse is how everyone's from different walks of life. For seven months, a collaboration of different personalities develop chemistry and become a second family," Saccomanno said.

Despite developing into an All-Star Triple-A standout, the Astros' organization tends to overlook his consistent productivity. Last season, Saccomanno hit .297 with 27 home runs and 84 RBIs in 528 at-bats for Round Rock. He was named to the 2008 Pacific Coast League All-Star team and cracked the go-ahead RBI single in the eighth to lead the PCL to a 6-2 victory over the International League.

"Several things contribute to success in baseball. Talent, work ethic, coaches and teammates play a critical role. I learned a great deal from J.R. House and Danny Klass. House has a remarkable outlook on the game and Klass makes you a better person," said Saccomanno.

His statistics validate his readiness to play in the majors. Saccomanno has simply outgrown Triple-A and wants to take the next step in his career. However, the Astros' organization fails to recognize the 28-year-old Triple-A superstar as a top-notch prospect.

In a normal circumstance, Saccomanno would likely be the starting first or third baseman for the Houston Astros. Instead, he must compete with Berkman and Darin Erstad on the depth chart at first and Geoff Blum and Jeff Keppinger at third.

Unfortunately, Saccomanno realizes that Berkman will remain the team's starter at first for several more years. Also, Houston tagged Chris Johnson as the future third baseman. For now, Blum and Keppinger will bridge the gap until Johnson improves his weaknesses at Round Rock.

Once again, the Baylor University product finds himself stuck in the minors. At this point, he's done everything to prove he belongs with the Astros. Saccomanno possesses the skills to be a starter in the big leagues. Unless Berkman suffers a lengthy injury, Saccomanno will be looking at his third consecutive season in Round Rock.

"It's definitely a mental grind. You learn to play into your strengths. A baseball player is successful by producing 3-of-10 times at the plate. Everyone fails numerous times playing this challenging game. Ironically, failure is not necessarily a bad thing; instead, it builds character and makes you a better player. One must learn to deal and manage failure in the right way," he said.

Saccomanno grew up in North Houston idolizing Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. "The Biggio/Bagwell era was a special part of the city's history. Both players, including Ozzie Smith, were my favorite players as a kid. Also, my dad has always been a positive baseball influence and continues to teach me how to be successful in life."

He was named Second-Team All-District 16-5A at Klein Forest High School and received the National Scholar Athlete Award. Saccomanno chose to sign with Baylor and emerged as a standout shortstop during his junior year, but suffered a torn labrium in his right shoulder prior to his senior season. He redshirted and returned the following season as a fifth-year senior. The Astros selected him in the 23rd round of the 2003 June amateur draft.

"You have to do a great job of taking care of your body when playing this game. Players wear down easily by not eating right. The season has a way of beating up your body physically and mentally," Saccomanno said.

The Houston Astros represent his childhood and big league experience, but the team he geniunely loves continues to hold up his career. Saccomanno does not want to walk the same path as Kevin Costner's character in Bull Durham as a career minor leaguer.

For the 2009 season, he faces an even greater challenge of making it back to Houston. Currently, Round Rock's roster consists of several top-notch prospects, including Johnson, Brian Bogusevic and Drew Sutton, as well as players with substantial Major League experience.

The Astros' organization has several options at Triple-A barring any circumstance. Once again, Saccomanno could get lost in the shuffle and must continue producing monstrous numbers. Eventually, Houston needs to make a rational decision regarding Saccomanno's future. Realistically, being traded to another organization could be the best thing for his career.

"The decision-making process is not up to me. Ed Wade and his staff already have a challenging job of putting together the best possible team to win. Everyone will always have opinions, but solid players will always give 100 percent and not get caught up in the decisions of an organization," Saccomanno said.

Top 10 Moments at Minute Maid Park

Minute Maid Park celebrates its 10th anniversary this season as home to the Houston Astros. When the ballpark officially opened for the 2000 season, the initial name was The Ballpark at Union Station.

For a three-year period, the name of the park frequently changed. Enron bought the naming rights to the stadium in April, 1999, for a 30-year, $100-million deal.

Unfortunately, the Astros organization experienced a shocking situation when Enron declared bankruptcy in conjunction to one of the most greatest corporate scandals in U.S. history.

Astros' management repurchased the remainder of Enron's 30-year naming rights and called the ballpark "Astros Field." In June 2002, Minute Maid, the fruit-juice subsidiary of Coca-Cola, acquired the naming rights for 28 years at over $100 million.

Since the acquisition, "The Juice Box" has been a mainstay in downtown Houston. In addition to hosting the Astros, Minute Maid Park features special events such as concerts and international soccer matches.

During the 10-year period, several memorable moments have occurred at Minute Maid Park. The following rank as the stadium's 10 greatest moments:

10) July 12, 2004 - The American League wins the 2004 Major League All-Star Game 9-4 . Baltimore's Miguel Tejada secures the Century 21 Home Run Derby title after hitting a total of 27 home runs, including 15 in the second round.

Tejada beat future Astros teammate Lance Berkman in the final round 5-4.

9) Apr. 7, 2000 - The Houston Astros lose to the Philadelphia Phillies in the first ever regular season in stadium history.

Former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay, who was later indicted on 11 counts of securities fraud, wire fraud and making false and misleading statements, throws the ceremonial first pitch and Phillies’ third baseman Scott Rolen hits the ballpark’s first home run. (Apr. 7, 2000)

8) May 7, 2004 - Seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens records his 4,137 career strikeout to pass Steve Carlton for second on the all-time list behind baseball icon Nolan Ryan.

7) June 22, 2002 - Jeff Bagwell honors the memory of friend and former teammate Darryl Kile with the game-winning pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 12th to give the Houston Astros a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Kile passed away earlier in the day of coronary disease in a Chicago hotel while participating in a three-game weekend series at Wrigley Field with the St. Louis Cardinals.

6) Apr. 3, 2006- Houston opens the 2006 regular season by raising their first ever National League pennant and injured franchise star Jeff Bagwell, who missed the entire season and ultimately retired, receives a two-minute standing ovation from the fans for his 15 memorable seasons in an Astros uniform.

5) Sept. 30, 2007- Record stadium crowd of 43,823 watches as Biggio plays the final game of his 20-year Hall-of-Fame career, officially ending the Biggio/Bagwell era. Biggio played his entire career in an Astros uniform, having turned down mulitple opportunities during his career to play elsewhere for more money.

4) Oct. 9, 2005 - Chris Burke hits the series-winning walk-off homer off Atlanta Braves’ Joey Devine in the 18th inning of Game 4 of the 2004 NLDS. It stands as the longest postseason game in Major League Baseball history.

3) Oct. 17, 2005- The Astros are one strike away from advancing to the World Series when St. Louis Cardinals All-Star first baseman Albert Pujols silences the entire city of Houston with a massive game-winning three-run homer off Astros’ closer Brad Lidge in Game Five of the 2005 NLCS, which landed on the train tracks in the back of Minute Maid Park.

2) Oct. 25, 2005 - First ever World Series game (Game Three) played in the state of Texas with the Astros losing to the Chicago White Sox 7-5 in 14 innings. It remains the longest World Series game ever played, lasting five hours and 41 minutes.

1) June 28, 2007 - Legendary Houston Astros Craig Biggio singles in the seventh, but gets thrown out at second to record his 3,000th career hit. Biggio had five hits, including an infield single which led to Carlos Lee's walk-off grand slam in the 11th to secure an 8-5 win.

Houston Astros Opening Day Roster Predictions

The Houston Astros entered Spring Training seeking answers to several questions.

Who's going to make the starting rotation? Who's going to be the starting catcher? How many games are we capable of winning? Are we a contender?

For several weeks, the Astros were on pace to accomplish a monumental feat: the worst Spring Training record of all-time.

After beginning 1-16-3, Houston embarked on a seven-game winning streak, which coincided with the signing of future Hall-of-Fame catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez.

Traditionally, teams dismiss poor spring records, claiming they have no significant meaning in dictating the regular season.

Regardless of what sport, athletes want to win. Winning builds confidence and a team can't simply transfer a poor preseason into instant regular-season success.

Mentality plays a critical role in sports. Losing brings down the morale of a locker room. Luckily, the Astros discovered the remedy for losing and made a remarkable turnaround, finishing their Grapefruit action with a 10-18-3 record.

As Opening Day approaches on Tuesday, the Astros will play two exhibition games at Minute Maid Park Friday and Saturday against the Cleveland Indians, which manager Cecil Cooper will use to evaluate the final roster spots.

Here's my Opening Day roster predictions and starting lineup:

OPENING-DAY LINEUP

1) Matsui

2) Rodriguez

3) Berkman

4) Lee

5) Tejada

6) Pence

7) Blum/Keppinger

8) Bourn

9) Oswalt

PROJECTED REGULAR SEASON LINEUP

1) Bourn

2) Pence

3) Berkman

4) Lee

5) Tejada

6) Rodriguez

7) Blum/Keppinger

8) Matsui

9) Starting Pitcher

Bourn has done enough the past two weeks to regain the leadoff spot; however, Cooper proclaimed that Bourn would begin the season batting eighth in the lineup.

Until recently, it appeared that Bourn would not even make the roster based on his offensive struggles. Last season, Bourn hit a dismal .229 with five homers, 29 RBI, 41 stolen bases and a dreadful .288 on-base percentage.

The 2009 season will be an audition to determine his future role with the team. If the former Houston Cougar fails to produce, top-notch prospect Brian Bogusevic will be waiting to take his spot.

Bourn's greatest assist is his blazing speed. If he can simply raise his on-base percentage, he possesses the ability of replicating Ricky Henderson's stolen base numbers. His speed becomes a useless commodity by rarely getting on base.

The 26-year-old outfielder begins the regular season swinging a hot bat and intends to prove he belongs at the top of the order.

Pence makes an ideal No. 2 hitter. He's a scrappy player with good speed and pop in his bat. Pence drilled 25 homers last season and demonstrates passion on the field. The UT-Arlington product always hustle no matter what.

All-Star sluggers Berkman, Lee, and Tejada have combined for 840 career home runs, making them ideal middle-of-the-lineup hitters.

Rodriguez makes sense in the No. 6 role and provides Tejada with protection in the lineup. After a dismal half-season with the Yankees in 2008, Pudge showed a rejuvenated bat in the World Baseball Classic and continued his offensive production after signing with the Astros. He has a career .301 average with 295 homers and 1,217 RBI.

Blum is a blue-collar contact hitter, and Matsui has the ability to get on base and use his speed with the pitcher batting behind him.

The Astros' starting pitcher can bunt Matsui over to either second or third base with less than two outs to set up an RBI opportunity for the top of the lineup.

Ultimately, 25-man rosters change frequently over 162 regular-season games. Injuries, poor performances and trades are some of the many reasons.

Minor league prospects in the Astros' organization will be ready to make the climb to the big leagues when called upon.

If the Astros find themselves out of contention at trade deadline, the organization will likely shop Rodriguez and Tejada to playoff caliber teams. Tejada enters the final year of his six-year, $72 million contract, and Pudge signed a one-year deal.

Everyone begins Opening Day as a World Series contender. Houston must avoid their traditional slow start if they want to remain in the playoff picture.

The Chicago Cubs lead a weak NL Central, meaning the Astros have a chance to hang around and either challenge for the divisional title or pursue a wild card berth.

Houston Astros Get a Win: Bust Out the Champagne

The Houston Astros have not tasted victory since their Grapefruit opener against the Washington Nationals on February 25.

Since that date, they've spiraled downward to a 1-16-3 record. But former All-Star and non-roster invitee Russ Ortiz has finally ended the horrendous drought by tossing six scoreless innings and striking out two without yielding a walk in a 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Laynce Nix's fourth-inning single was the only hit allowed by Ortiz, who moved closer to locking down a spot in the Astros' starting rotation. Right-hander Chris Sampson followed Ortiz's dominant performance with two scoreless innings.

Reds starter Johnny Cueto pitched respectably, giving up six hits and two runs in five innings. Right-handed Cincinnati reliever Nick Masset allowed three hits and two runs over three innings.

Catcher Humberto Quintero got the offense going for the Astros with a two-out RBI single in the second to score Geoff Blum. Outfielder Reggie Abercrombie crossed home plate after Ortiz crushed an RBI single.

Darin Erstad led off the sixth with a double, setting the stage for Lance Berkman. The former Rice University All-American connected on his first home run of the spring and increased the Houston lead to 4-0.

Former Astro Daryle Ward went deep for a ninth-inning two-run homer off Bud Norris, but Astro reliever Jeff Fulchino recorded the final two outs of the ninth.

Houston looks to make it two in a row when they take on the Toronto Blue Jays in a Saturday afternoon game in Dunedin. Right-hander Jose Capellan, who has a 0.00 ERA this spring, gets a chance to state his case for a rotation spot, but draws a challenging counterpart in five-time All-Star and 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay.

Astros on Pace for All-Time Worst Spring Training Record

The 2009 Houston Astros may find themselves in the baseball record book for worst spring training record in history.

After their recent 12-1 loss to the New York Mets, the Astros' Grapefruit League record fell to 1-16-3. They must reach at least six wins in order to catch the 1985 Pittsburgh Pirates, who finished 6-18 that spring.

Currently, the pitching has been somewhat respectable, but weak offensive production and terrible defense continue to be cancerous to the team.

As opening day approaches, Houston's offense has a .207 batting average. It's only a matter of time before an offense featuring All-Star sluggers Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada and Ivan Rodriguez will experience a breakout and score runs.

By holding onto this mindset, the Astros' organization must simply wait and hope for the best. For now, spring training concludes in less than two weeks and we'll find out soon enough if the team's forgettable spring clinches an embarrassing spot in the record books.

Pudge Passes Physical, Finalizes One-Year Deal

The Houston Astros can officially welcome future Hall-of-Fame catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez to the active roster.

Rodriguez, the 1999 AL MVP, passed his physical in Orlando, finalizing the one-year, $1.5 million contract. ESPN.com reports the 14-time All-Star will make his spring debut for the Astros this Sunday.

Entering this season, the Astros had to replace veteran catcher Brad Ausmus, who signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason to backup Russell Martin.

Houston drafted Stanford University catcher Jason Castrowith the 10th overal selection of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft, but he needs time to work his way up the minor league ladder.

Facing a precarious situation at catcher, the Astros' organization was willing to give Humberto Quintero and J.R. Towlesthe opportunity to earn the starting job. Both Quintero and Towles have struggled this spring, causing GM Ed Wade to seek outside assistance.

Pudge will now slide into the starting lineup, forcing Quintero to move into the backup role. In September, 2007, Towles appeared to be the team's future catcher after setting a franchise record with eight RBIs in a single game. Towles started the 2008 season as the starting catcher, but struggled offensively, losing the job to Ausmus.

Throughout his career, Rodriguez wore No. 7 with the Texas Rangers, Florida Marlins, and Detroit Tigers. Since Houston retired No. 7 to honor the legendary Craig Biggio, Pudge plans on wearing No. 14 on his back.

All-Star Boone Needs Open Heart Surgery

Aaron Boone's big league career has been a mixture of perseverance, success, triumph and overcoming adversity. The 36-year-old veteran infielder now faces the greatest challenge of his life: Open heart surgery.

In a news conference Wednesday, Boone announced he will have season-ending open-heart surgery to replace a bicuspid aortic valve. During his collegiate career at USC, he first learned of his condition that never threatened his baseball career until now.

Boone monitors his condition on a daily basis, but recently, Dr. Mike Link and team physician Dr. Jim Muntz of Methodist Hospital in Houston collaborated and advised him to move forward with the procedure.

According to espn.com, test results indicated an acceleration in Boone's condition, forcing the 2003 NL All-Star to deal with the present situation. Overall, Boone was not caught by surprise, recognizing one day he would have to take care of his heart problem.

Doctors informed Boone that he will miss the 2009 season, but has a chance of resuming his baseball career upon full recovery. Since his first priority revolves around his family and health, the 12-year veteran will cross that bridge at a later date.

Boone has been a special asset to Major League Baseball. His clubhouse leadership and legacy on-and-off the field touches the lives of current and former teammates. He knows the feeling of being on top of the world and how to push forward when the odds stack against an individual.

His heroic and legendary game-winning home run off Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield in game seven of the 2003 ALCS put the New York Yankees in the World Series This remarkable home run forever enshrined Boone into the baseball record books.

Since his famous homer, Boone has struggled in maintaining consistency during his career. On February 24, 2004, the Yankees terminated Boone's contract after tearing a knee ligament in a pick-up game of basketball. This opened the door for New York to acquire superstar third baseman Alex Rodriguez from the Texas Rangers.

Boone missed the entire 2004 season rehabilitating his knee and relied on perseverance to get back on the baseball diamond. The Yankees gave Boone the option of returning as the team's starting second baseman for the 2005 season, but instead, he signed a two-year deal with the Cleveland Indians. This precious opportunity allowed him to wear an Indians' uniform like his grandfather, Ray Boone, who began his career in Cleveland from 1948-53.

His grandfather was a two-time All-Star and the 1955 AL RBI champion as a member of the Detroit Tigers. Four-time All-Star Bob Boone, Aaron's father, won seven Gold Glove Awards during his 19-year career and managed him in Cincinnati from 2001-03. Older brother, Brett Boone, was a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, hitting .266 with 252 home runs and 1,021 RBIs in his 14-year career.

Houston teammates showed their support for Boone at the press conference, including GM Ed Wade and manager Cecil Cooper. He signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Astros in December and has already made a difference in the clubhouse less than a month into spring training.

For now, Geoff Blum assumes the starting role at third base and prospect Chris Johnson will be a strong candidate to make the opening-day roster. Entering this season, the Astros' organization made a tough decision not to bring back third baseman Ty Wigginton. Instead, both Blum and Boone were scheduled to platoon at third during the 2009 season in order to give Johnson more time for further development.

For his career, Boone has hit .264 with 126 HR and 555 RBI with the Reds (1997-2003), Yankees (2003), Indians (2005-06), Florida Marlins (2007) and Washington Nationals (2008). If he never walks out on the field again, Boone will be remembered as a winner, an ideal teammate, and a tremendous role model for kids and the game of baseball.

Houston, We've Got Pudge

The rumors surrounding the Houston Astros interest in signing 14-time All-Star catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez became a reality when the future Hall-of-Famer agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Monday, according to ESPN's baseball analyst Steve Phillips.

Throughout his decorated career, Rodriguez, the 1999 AL MVP has distinguished himself as one of the greatest catchers in baseball history.

Known for his tremendous clubhouse leadership, Pudge's defensive skills and ability to manage a pitching staff makes the 37-year-old a valuable commodity to an Astros' squad seeking immediate assistance at the catching position.

The Puerto Rico native has hit .301 with 295 home runs, 1,217 RBI and 2,605 hits in 8,645 at-bats during his 18-year big league career.

His career includes time with the Texas Rangers (1991-2002), Florida Marlins (2003), Detroit Tigers (2004-08) and New York Yankees (2008).

In recent years, however, Pudge's numbers have significantly declined, as evident with his .219 average in 96 at-bats for the Yankees last season.

When All-Star catcher Jorge Posada suffered a season-ending injury, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner traded right-handed reliever Kyle Farnsworth to Detroit in order to obtain the legendary catcher.

Steinbrenner hoped Rodriguez would be a temporary solution for a team seeking a World Series title. Unfortunately, the Bronx has not been particularly kind to Pudge, who found himself on the free-agent market with limited suitors this offseason.

Despite his diminishing production, Rodriguez brings a wealth of postseason experience to the Astros' organization. He won a World Series ring with the Marlins in 2003 and participated in the 2006 World Series as a Tiger against the St. Louis Cardinals.

For nearly two months, Astros GM Ed Wade constantly informed the media of the team's lack of interest in signing Rodriguez. Wade made it crystal-clear that the Astros' top prospect Jason Castro, the team's 2008 first-round selection out of Stanford University, would represent the team's future at the catching position.

At that time, Houston was willing to give catchers Humberto Quintero and JR Towles an opportunity to win the starting job.

Wade built the Astros to be a future contender, not necessarily in 2009. Realistically, Houston wants to get younger. Since the beginning of spring training, the mindset of the organization has rapidly changed.

Manager Cecil Cooper's frustration toward the lack of offense and overall defense, combined with a 1-14-2 record, influenced the organization to look outside for an impact player.

Quintero and Towles offensive woes and inability to seize the role as the starting catcher made Pudge a logical choice for owner Drayton McLane.

Currently, Rodriguez's is on an offensive tear for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, and can add at least one or two more victories to every Houston starting pitcher's win total this season.

If the Astros were in any other division, the signing of Pudge may have never taken place. Fortunately, Houston plays in a weak NL Central division, where even during a rebuilding season, a team can still contend for the divisional title.

When examining the teams in the NL Central this season, the Chicago Cubs have depth from top to bottom and will be the favorite to win the division.

The Milwaukee Brewers took a major hit by losing two All-Star pitchers in CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets. St. Louis still has Albert Pujols, but possesses an injury-prone pitching staff. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh continue to build with young players for the future.

The Astros lack overall depth, but still have All-Stars Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada, Roy Oswalt, and Jose Valverde. By adding Pudge to the mix, Houston becomes a legitimate candidate to finish in the top two in the NL Central.

Even if they can't top the Cubs, the Astros may be able to compete for a wild card.

Pudge is a temporary solution for now, bridging the gap until Castro officially seizes the catching duties. He made $13 million last season and will make $1.5 million with the Astros in 2009.

McLane and Wade worked the deal to the club's advantage as a low-risk, potential high reward asset. Since RHP Brandon Backe may not make the opening-day roster, his money will contribute to Pudge's contract.

If the Astros find themselves out of the playoff race in July, they may be inclined to deal Pudge to a contender. For now, McLane views Rodriguez as a tremendous business deal. He will attract baseball fanatics to Minute Maid Park, increase season ticket sales, and cause a migration of Astros' fans to Kissimmee for the remainder of spring training.

Brandon Backe Faces Slim Chance of Making the Astros Roster

Houston Astros right-hander Brandon Backe entered Spring Training with a chip on his shoulder. The 30-year-old Galveston native finished 9-14 with a 6.05 ERA in 31 starts last season.

After undergoing career-threatening Tommy John surgery Sept. 7, 2006, Backe perservered through intensive rehabilitation and returned to the mound toward the end of the 2007 season.

Backe stayed healthy last season, but struggled over the course of the season, giving up 202 hits and 36 homers in 166.2 innings.

A terrible September and an October arrest in Galveston for involvement in a fight at a wedding put the Astros in a challenging position to decide whether or not to bring back the seven-year veteran.

Ultimately, Backe agreed to a one-year, $1.55 million deal in January, but was not guaranteed a rotation spot. General manager Ed Wade and manager Cecil Cooper informed Backe that he needed to prove himself to solidify the No. 5 spot.

Entering Spring Training, Backe had to make the most of every practice and performance on the mound to make the opening-day roster. He understood that non-roster invitee and former All-Star Russ Ortiz, along with Fernando Nieve, Felipe Paulino, Clay Hensley and Jose Capellan would also compete for the final spot in the rotation.

Now, Backe must climb an uphill battle to overcome a strained left intercostal muscle, which he hurt Sunday while tossing two scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Before the game, his spring record was 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in six innings.

For a guy needing every chance, Backe faces at least a 10-day recovery period before taking the mound, leaving the right-hander with approximately 12 days to build pitching endurance in order to be ready for opening day.

Realistically, the injury may have cost Backe a chance of making the roster. Time has become his biggest enemy and the Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros will owe him his entire 2009 salary by not deciding his fate before April 1.

During the offseason, owner Drayton McLane and Wade looked for bargains and chose not to spend a substantial amount of money signing free agents. Ortiz has emerged as the leading candidate for the No. 5 spot and a tremendous performance today against the Philadelphia Phillies may push the former All-Star over the top.

The fact remains that once Backe returns, he simply does not have enough time to condition his body to throw the number of inning required for a starting pitcher. Houston's organization wants to save money and will not be inclined to give Backe an entire year's salary if he's not ready to make an immediate impact.

Backe anxiously awaits, recognizing that his chances of making the team slips away each passing day.

Pudge Rodriguez Rumors Surfacing Again in Houston

The Houston Astros addressed the Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez rumor earlier this spring by expressing their lack of interest in signing the 14-time All-Star and future Hall-of-Fame catcher.

Houston's 2008 first-round draft pick Jason Castro may eventually emerge as the team’s future catcher, but for now, the Astros organization wants to give Humberto Quintero and J.R. Towles an opportunity to win the job.

Since the beginning of Spring Training, the losses continue to pile, causing a tremendous amount of frustration and concern for manager Cecil Cooper and GM Ed Wade.

The lack of offense and the inability to have effective balance may influence the Astros organization to take a solid look at potential players remaining on the free-agent market.

Rodriguez, who is tearing it up for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, has demonstrated his desire to play this season. Pudge went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs against Panama on March 8. Puerto Rico completed a three-game sweep in Round 1 and will face Team USA this Saturday.

After being traded to the New York Yankees this past July, Pudge’s offensive production declined, hitting just .219 with two home runs and three RBIs in 96 at-bats.

His diminishing skills and alleged link to previous steroid usage caused teams to overlook one of the game’s greatest catchers this offseason.

Right now, the Astros cannot distinguish their own identity. Wade built this team for future success and not exactly to win during the 2009 season. However, the Astros do play in a weak NL Central division. The Chicago Cubs will realistically dominate the division, but second place and a potential wild-card bid remains up in the air for clubs like the Astros, Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.

The Brewers’ pitching staff took a major blow by losing CC Sabathiato the Yankees and right-hander Ben Sheets. St. Louis still has Albert Pujols, but an injury-prone pitching staff makes them vulnerable. Besides Roy Oswalt and Chicago’s Carlos Zambrano, the NL Central lacks dominate starting pitching.

If the Astros' pitching staff stays healthy over the course of the regular season, they can compete in the division as long as the team avoids the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde hitting streaks.

Owner Drayton McLane, Cooper and Wade need to make a logical decision whether or not Rodriguez, the 1999 AL MVP, is the answer for the team this season.

He fits nicely into a lineup that already includes All-Stars Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee and Miguel Tejada. If the offense continue to plunder this spring and neither Quintero or Towles can establish themselves as legitimate starting catcher options, then look for the Astros to sign Pudge to a one-year contract.

Darin Erstad Represents True Meaning of Integrity

Houston Astros OF/1B Darin Erstad's honor, integrity, and overall approach to the game exemplify the true meaning of baseball.

The Astros signed the two-time All-Star to a one-year contract prior to the 2008 season.

Erstad proved to be a valuable commodity for the club, hitting .276 with four home runs and 31 RBI in 322 at-bats.

The 14-year veteran demonstrates exceptional leadership in the clubhouse and acts as a tremendous role model to the younger ball players.

In August 2008, the Astros organization rewarded Erstad with a one-year extension with a club option for 2010.

The Jamestown, North Dakota native possesses an extensive sports background. At Jamestown High School, the multi-talented sports star participated on the football, hockey, and track and field teams.

Erstad kicked a 50-yard field goal as the team's place kicker, scored 36 goals in hockey, and won two state titles in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

Since Jamestown High School did not have a baseball team, he played American Legion baseball, hitting .492 with 18 home runs and 86 RBI and posting a 10-2 record with a 2.18 ERA as a pitcher. His success on the field earned him AP North Dakota Athlete of the Year honors in 1992.

"Growing up in Jamestown, my dad and Tom Gould were my biggest sports influences. I was a die-hard Minnesota Twins fan and admired Kirby Puckett. In high school, the sports never overlapped each other and I was just an all-around athlete. I have self-discipline and experienced great guidance from my parents," Erstad said.

Despite his success in high school, Erstad generated little interest during the college recruiting process.

His summer American Legion baseball coach, Steve Gillispie, a former University of Nebraska assistant coach, informed Cornhuskers head coach John Sanders about a talented ball player from North Dakota.

Erstad received baseball scholarship offers from both Creighton University and Nebraska. He was drafted by the New York Mets in the 13th round of the 1992 draft but declined turning pro and accepted the offer to attend Nebraska.

"Coach Gillispie got me excited about Nebraska. He believed in me, and I wanted to be a part of their university," said Erstad.

At Nebraska, he replicated Bo Jackson by being a two-sport star in football and baseball. Erstad was the starting punter on the 1994 National Championship team for Tom Osborne, averaging 42.6 yards per punt.

"Coach Osborne always said that you can't control what's going on around you, but you can control what you do. I follow that advice to this day and was blessed to be able to play for him and the Cornhusker football team," he said.

In addition to his success on the football field, Erstad established himself as the top collegiate baseball player.

During his junior year, he knocked the cover off the ball and led the Big Eight Conference with a .410 average. The first-team All-American was the only conference player to get over 100 hits in the 1995 season.

"Transitioning to college was a great challenge. You definitely have to keep your hat on and stay focused. I started off with a 3.6 GPA and then dropped to a 2.2 GPA in the spring semester of my freshman year. It was tough missing classes to go on the road for baseball games. I made adjustments and cleaned up my mess after that," said Erstad.

In the 1995 amateur draft, the California Angels did not hesitate to select Erstad as the No. 1 overall pick. He progressed rapidly through the minors, playing Rookie-level ball for the AZL Angels and for Class A-Advanced Lake Elsinore in 1995.

Erstad was promoted all the way to Triple-A Vancouver in 1996, hitting .305 before making his Major League debut for the Angels on Jun. 14, 1996.

"The minors is literally a mental grind. You travel 12-14 hours on a bus and attempt to sleep. Sometimes, you'll arrive at the hotel at 2 pm and turn around and play a game one hour later. Looking back, I was pushed through the minors quickly, but at that time, the Angels lacked depth and needed me," he said.

Erstad's success in baseball has enabled the recipient of the 2005 Roberto Clemente Award to give back to the community.

He makes a significant difference in people's lives with his involvement in Big Brothers of Orange County and local Boys and Girls Clubs, speaking at baseball camps, and making donations to build baseball fields for kids needing a place to play.

"I enjoy giving back and helping people. It's all about the kids. Where I'm from in North Dakota, there are baseball fields everywhere. In California, several Little League teams don't have places to play, and I wanted to help build fields. I'm also involved with Special Olympics, and my wife and I are big supporters of child abuse programs," said Erstad.

Entering Spring Training, Erstad will officially begin his second season in an Astros uniform. The 34-year-old World Series champion (2002) expects the Astros to be a contender within the NL Central this season.

"The goal is to win the World Series. We had a great run toward the end of last season and the team returns several players. It's the same attitude and a new season. You play hard everyday and play to win."

The three-time Gold Glove Award winner accepts the responsibility of being a leader in the clubhouse.

"I try to help whenever I can. Guys will ask me questions, and I'll always do my best to help a teammate get better. I really don't feel like I've changed since coming into the big leagues in 1996. I try to live life the right way and be a good person," he said.

The Astros organization has faith in his ability and recognizes the positive difference in having Erstad on the field and in the locker room.

"You never stop playing hard and always do your best. Players must never forget how fun the game is, and you have to rise above the challenges and push forward," said Erstad.

Astros Left-Hander Hampton Has Irregular Heartbeat

Houston Astros left-hander Mike Hampton traveled to Houston today to meet with team physician Jim Muntz after an EKG test revealed an irregular heartbeat.

The test result, part of a routine physical, was discovered by Dr. Michael Link this past Saturday in Kissimmee, FL. Based on the results, the minor severity of the circumstances has generated optimism throughout the Astros organization.
Houston Astros' Spring Training Insight

The Houston Astros' pitchers and catchers officially reported to Kissimmee, FL today to begin Spring Training. Despite all the negative publicity this past weekly regarding steroids in baseball, the 2009 season is a fresh beginning for all teams and fans.

What can you expect from the 2009 Astros' squad?

The Astros have endured only two losing seasons since 1991, but it's fair to say the organization will use this season to rebuild.

Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Roy Oswalt and Miguel Tejada make a substantial amount of money, but the team lacks depth past the superstars, especially in the starting pitching rotation.

The bullpen faired slightly better last season, leading the NL in saves with 48. However, the relievers gave up a league-leading 70 home runs.

Offensively, Houston ranked 17th in batting, 20th in total bases, 17th in slugging, 22nd in on-base percentage, 22nd in runs, 16th in home runs, 20th in RBIs, ninth in stolen bases and tied for second in leaving runners on base.

It's hard to believe that the Astros could rank so low when they have Berkman, Lee, Tejada and Hunter Pence on the roster. Indeed, Lee did have season-ending surgery in August, which played a role in the overall rankings.

Entering the 2009 preseason rankings, Sporting News has picked the Astros to finish 5th in the NL Central.

The Astros are building toward 2011 and will use the next two seasons to continue developing and bringing up their top-notch prospects.

From now and throughout Spring Training and the regular season, feel free to check out my current articles regarding the Astros at www.examiner.com/x-2910-Houston-Astros-Examiner.

Ten Reasons Kurt Warner Will Sign with Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs fired coach Herm Edwards after posting a 15-34 record in three seasons, including 2-14 this season. Since the hiring of Scott Pioli as general manager, it has been rumored that changes within the organization will occur. Former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan's name continues to surface as a possibility of becoming the next head coach; however, it remains unlikely Shanahan will be coaching in Kansas City next season.

After the Super Bowl, the Chiefs will seek permission to talk with Arizona offensive coordinator Todd Haley regarding the vacant coaching position. Haley's stock has flourished in conjunction with the Cardinals run through the NFC playoffs and the team's first ever Super Bowl appearance. Both Haley and Pioli have one major connection: Bill Parcells.

Only three NFL franchises have posted worse records than the Chiefs in the past three years; Detroit, Oakland and St. Louis. Kansas City has traditionally been a winning franchise until recently. Since the Chiefs play in a weak AFC West division, the possibility of improving the franchise in a shorter period of time increases.

Haley would bring his explosive passing offense from Arizona to Kansas City and needs a gunslinger for a quarterback and balance at the wide receiver position to launch his prototypical offensive scheme.

Mel Kiper has posted his 2009 mock NFL draft on espn.com. Right now, Kiper has the Chiefs selecting USC quarterback Mark Sanchez at No. 3. Kansas City needs to upgrade their quarterback position, but Kiper based this selection on Edwards still being coach.

The hiring of Haley will probably lead to the selection of Texas Tech WR Michael Crabtree with the No. 3 pick. Realistically, Haley would seek a quick turnaround and drafting a rookie QB in the first-round will slow him down. Crabtree provides Haley with a balanced wide receiver attack with Dwayne Bowe and future hall-of-fame TE Tony Gonzalez, similar to Larry Fitzgerald and Anquin Boldin in Arizona. The combination of these talented receivers mixed with RB Larry Johnson and Jamaal Charles gives the Chiefs an opportunity to have one of the best offenses in the NFL next season.

Haley will look to sign a veteran free-agent quarterback and build his defense through free-agency and the draft. If Kansas City hires Haley as head coach, the following 10 reasons indicate why Kurt Warner will be the Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback next season:

1. Haley is head coach

2. Warner has familiarity with Haley's offensive system

3. Warner is an unrestricted free-agent

4. Economic decision by Arizona Cardinals. Matt Leinart was No. 10 pick in 2006 NFL Draft and makes a substantial amount of money as a back-up. Can't keep him on the bench much longer.

5. At 37, seeking a potential two-year deal to finish career

6. Guarantee starting quarterback job

7. Gets to throw to Bowe, Crabtree and Gonzalez

8. Play in a weak AFC West division

9. Opportunity to play in the Midwest (originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

10. Irony. Began NFL career in Missouri (St. Louis); will end NFL career in Missouri (Kansas City)

Houston Texans Face Most Important Draft In Franchise History

When the Houston Texans hit the field for training camp this summer, the team will officially begin their eighth season as a franchise. Since the 2002 NFL Draft, the Texans have struggled with inconsistent play on the field and ineffective decision-making by current and former front-office personnel.

Slowly, Houston has progressed into an 8-8 team, but not at the rate owner Bob McNair expected to achieve.

Typically, the front office demonstrates certain irrationalities when drafting players and lacks the desire to pursue quality free-agents. Since the inaugural season, Houston has drafted proficient, franchise players like Owen Daniel, Andre Johnson, Amobi Okoye, Dunta Robinson, DeMeco Ryans, Steve Slaton, and Mario Williams. Despite the success of these draft picks, the majority of Houston’s selections have been bust, especially QB David Carr, the No. 1 pick in the 2002 NFL Draft.

For the 2009 NFL Draft, the Texans will encounter their most important draft in franchise history. Before analyzing the needs of the Texans, the team must put together the right coaching staff. Head coach Gary Kubiak and GM Rick Smith definitely have improved the organization since being hired in 2006.

This season, Kubiak showed complete discontentment toward defensive coordinator Richard Smith. Overall, the Houston Texans’ offense ranked third in the NFL, but the defense finished 22nd. Recently the Texans fired Smith, defensive line coach Jethro Franklin, and secondary coach Jon Hoke.

Kubiak promoted senior defensive assistant Frank Bush to replace Smith as defensive coordinator. Bush, 46, understands Kubiak's philosophy and has earned the respect of the team's defensive players the past two seasons, especially Ryans and Williams.

Also, David Gibbs, son of Texans' offensive line coach/assistant head coach Alex Gibbs, has officially replaced Hoke as secondary coach. Gibbs held the same job title the past three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, but the uncertainty of Herm Edwards' future in Kansas City and the opportunity to coach alongside his father influenced Gibbs to join the Texans.

Kubiak offered former Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli the defensive line coaching position; however, Marinelli accepted the defensive line/assistant head coach position for the Chicago Bears.

When looking at potential draft possibilities, the Houston Texans will use the upcoming draft to build their defense and fill the remaining holes on the offensive line. The Texans do need a No. 2 running back to complement Steve Slaton, but will take a strong look at the free-agent market to address this need. Based on the team’s 8-8 record in 2008, Houston will select 15th in the first-round.

Houston’s pass defense ranked 17th and only intercepted 12 passes in 2008. After missing out on drafting former LSU safety LaRon Landry in 2007, Houston must select a free safety that will impose fear in the opposing quarterback. Either USC junior Taylor Mays or University of Missouri senior William Moore adequately fills the biggest need for the organization.

Recently, Mays announced his intent to return to USC for his senior year, leaving Moore as the top-rated safety in the draft. At 6'1" 230 pounds, Moore has the size and speed to be a playmaker in the NFL. During his junior year, Moore recorded 117 tackles, including eight interceptions and two sacks. Moore’s production decreased during an injury-plagued senior year, but the All-American will still be selected in the first-round.

Also, ILB James Laurinaitis from Ohio State might be a tempting draft selection for Houston. If the New Orleans Saints do not select Laurinaitis at No. 14, the 2007 Butkus Award winner would be a great addition to a linebacker core that already consists of Ryans and Zac Diles.

Houston should consider replicating what the Carolina Panthers did in the 2008 draft. Carolina selected RB Jonathan Stewart with the No. 13 pick, and then made a valuable trade to gain an additional first-round selection, drafting OT Jeff Otah at No. 19. Houston could draft Laurinaitis at No. 15 and attempt to make a similar trade to obtain a late first-round pick to select Moore.

Still, the Texans need to find a pass-rushing DE opposite Williams. The team may try to find a sleeper later in the draft, but expect Houston to take a strong look at the free-agent market. Julius Peppers highlights the free-agent list of DE the Texans may pursue.

Traditionally, the offensive line has proven to be the team’s Achilles heel, but the hiring of Gibbs before the 2008 season brought the zone-blocking scheme to Houston.

University of Arkansas center Jonathan Luigs fits the prototypical offensive lineman for Gibbs, making him a potential second-round pick for the Texans, while University of Oregon right guard Andy Levitre might be a possibility in the third-round.

Right guard Mike Bristol struggled with Gibbs’ zone-blocking in 2008, making Levitre a perfect fit to replace Bristol as a starter.

During the offseason, Houston realizes they must spend money on free agents. First, the Texans will focus on re-signing Robinson. When RB Ahman Green gets released, the Texans will have to sign a No. 2 running back behind Slaton that can carry the ball 10-15 times per game.

After being release by Cincinnati last season, it’s no secret the Texans liked RB Rudi Johnson. However, since Houston still had Green, signing Johnson was not an option. This time, with Green out of the picture, Johnson fits perfectly as the team's potential No. 2 running back.

The Houston Texans will be aggessive in both the 2009 NFL Draft and the free-agent market. Despite playing in a challenging AFC South Division with the Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans, the Texans believe they can clinch a playoff berth next season.

Astros Must Improve Pitching Rotation To Contend In 2009

The Houston Astros entered the offseason needing to restructure their starting pitching.

In a NL Central division featuring the Chicago Cubs, Houston must also compete with Milwaukee and a refurnished St. Louis team. At this point, the Astros no longer resemble the 2005 World Series team. Instead, they have spiraled downward into a second-tier team, hoping to once again discover success. Houston’s front office lacks the aggression to pursue top-notch free agents.

General Manager Ed Wade's decision-making skills has depleted a promising minor league system and caused chemistry issues in the clubhouse. After accepting the GM position before the 2008 season, Wade immediately changed the make-up of the Astros.

Wade traded several talented, young players on two occasions just to get one player back in return. The Astros gave the Baltimore Orioles the majority of their starting pitching prospects for shortstop Miguel Tejada. Baltimore jumped at the opportunity of trading Tejada.

Once the Astros completed the trade, they received a star player who misrepresented himself about his age and faced steroid allegations. Tejada’s disappointing first season with the Astros symbolizes the front office’s inability to make the right decisions.

Also, more prospects were shipped to the Arizona Diamondbacks for closer Jose Valverde. Entering spring training last season, Wade had faith that inconsistent RHP Shaun Chacon would be the answer to the pitching rotation. When Chacon was dismissed from the team after punching Wade, the Astros finally made a solid trade in July, 2008 with the San Diego Padres for LHP Randy Wolf.

Ultimately, a team can go out and spend a substantial amount of money on offense, but it still comes down to pitching. The teams who have the best starting pitching and bullpen will always beat the best offensive teams.

Right now, the Astros desperately need starting pitching. By trading all of their minor league prospects a year ago, Houston has no chance of obtaining Jake Peavy in a trade from the Padres. Roy Oswalt does rank as one of the top starting pitchers in baseball and luckily the Astros have locked him down to a long-term contract.

After Oswalt, the starting rotation fails to intimidate opposing teams.

This offseason, Houston has done nothing to build the rotation. Needing to re-sign Wolf, the Astros broke off negotiations with the free-agent back in November. Wolf finished with a 6-2 record and a 3.57 ERA last season with the Astros.

Instead of bringing him back, Houston signed LHP Mike Hampton to a one-year, $2 million deal. At one time, Hampton, 36, was a premier starting pitcher, but now battles injuries and will never regain his former success. Despite a career 141-105 record, Hampton spent the entire 2006 and 2007 season with Atlanta on the DL. Unfortunately, Houston expects Hampton to be one of their best pitchers during the 2009 season.

Currently, the Astros list Oswalt, Brandon Backe, Wandy Rodriguez, Hampton and Brian Moehler as their starting rotation. The organization has given Backe and Rodriguez multiple opportunities to prove themselves. Overall, their inconsistent pitching as the team’s No. 2 and No. 3 starting pitchers the past two seasons failed to make the Astros a contender.

Obviously, Houston could not afford to sign free-agent pitchers C.C. Sabathia and A.J. Burnett, both signing lucrative deals with the New York Yankees. However, plenty of quality free-agent pitchers remain on the market, including Jon Garland, Tom Glavine, Derek Lowe, Pedro Martinez, Mark Mulder, Carl Pavano, Andy Pettitte, Ben Sheets, John Smoltz, and Wolf.

If the Astros want to become a contender once again, it starts by signing free-agent starting pitching. Houston needs to focus on signing at least two starters to fill the rotation. Backe and Rodriguez have officially worn out their welcome in Houston. Now, it's time to bring in guys who can help the team win.

Owner Drayton McLane needs to be persistent in pursuing starting pitching before the start of spring training. The Astros have six weeks to justify the disastrous offseason.

Out of the remaining starting pitchers on the market, Sheets would be the best fit in Houston. Sheets has familiarity with the NL Central and a strong relationship with Oswalt.

Also, the idea of bringing back Pettitte to Houston might be worth a discussion for the Astros. A Houston native and former Astro, Pettitte finds himself on the outside of the Yankees' organization after New York signed Sabathia and Burnett.

Both Pettitte and Sheets would be expensive, but the Astros are running out of options. Unless they pursue starting pitching, the team will be looking at a potential fourth-place finish in the NL Central for the 2009 season behind Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Louis.
