My Anti-Commentary: Power Against the Prejudicial Press

As you will tell from reading this, I was mad and offended. Please take no offense if you are a Gator; it is unintended...

You can find the article and response here:

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/college/seminoles/orl-bianchi2109mar21,0,1113239.column

------------------------

Mike

Good morning to you, sir. I hope you are having a wonderful start to your morning...

Let me be the first one to destroy it for you, as you have for me...

You are without a doubt the most prejudicial example of libel I have EVER seen within a newspaper, printed or online. Regardless of the fact you are all probably sitting up there behind your desk with Florida degrees behind you on the wall, are you a NEWSPAPER or a TABLOID? I'm pulling toward the latter one...

This is complete garbage, commentary or not. You know, looking through the years, I have come to realize one thing:

"Florida is jealous of Florida State."

Yes, you can pick your jaw up and close your mouth, I said it.

Well, why, when you all have countless NCAA tournaments in several different sports, many more than a former all-female college?

Why, when, you all play us EVERY year in EVERY sport to decide who are the elite within the State, the Governor's Cup, etc...and usually slaughter us, evidence from our previous few games?

Why, when you have a Humanitarian Quarterback who was the first to win the Heisman as a Sophomore, runner-up as a Junior?

I figured it out this morning...

...because of the press and prestige we have within the nation.

...because of the camaraderie FSU has amongst its university heads and team staff.

...because of the atmosphere Tallahassee presents itself (I actually got keyed my last trip to Gainesville; we don't like the Gators, but your vehicle will always be secure in Tallahassee, because we respect personal property of the fan...)

...because, including your beloved Gators, FSU is also front page newsworthy and usually comes unscathed regardless of the incident.

You want to know the real reason Steve Spurrier didn't come back to you all? Ron Zook, please...you see what he's done with Illinois...

Because of YOU, the Orlando Sentinel aka the Orlando Enquirer who decided a long time ago that its fun to pick on a legend, because you lost yours. In fact, let's show the nation our disgust with the fact Big Brother FSU is getting all the glory and not our beloved Florida Gators...

Since this is a blast against your prejudicial writers and not against Florida itself, I will not remind you of the umpteen players that were involved in team violence before a Bowl game, nor the fact that the NCAA has punished your program as well in the past...

What I will remind you is that your Staff Writer Andrew Carter is fair to both teams equally and even placed that in its own article...

A commentary is meant to be your view as a outsider looking in and your professional opinion AFTER the facts are in. What this is you have produced is written slander of a University and also of a National Football Team, as you attacked Arizona as well.

You don't think the Cinderella teams can make it against the more elite, because that isn't good news unless it happens. You know what that makes your paper, Mr Bianchi? A bully.

You, my fellow writer, are now a staff bully, maybe the leader.

Let me introduce you to respectful commentary done by sports writers who actually care about what they write about vs. the spewing hatred that flows from your articles...

www.bleacherreport.com

If you see me in there, drop me a line. I love to debate, and it would be a privilege, I assure you.

I do guarantee you this though; you won't be able to bring your nastiness in there or you will be ejected rather soon.

You guys need to have the city examine your paper in the same way you suggest the NCAA should bury us...at least Andrew knows he's welcome in Tallahassee...

Enjoy the rest of your day, Mike.

Say hey to your pals Tim and AE Banks

Respectively

Florida State Basketball: The Seminoles Are On a Warpath

To begin, I want to point out that I am indeed a Florida State fan(atic) and either way this season goes, I will still support my Seminoles as I have all of my 32 years.

No, I wasn’t born in Tallahassee, yet I favored Garnet and Gold everything as a baby (blankets, footballs, etc).

No my parents aren’t big sports fans either, but my aunt was and lived in Killearn for years. It didn’t take too long until I was warchantin’ and tomahawkin.’ But I digress…

Okay, I think the point stands I am full-fledged bias for my Noles. I've been to ‘Nole basketball games through the years at the Tallahassee Civic Center that were just terrible to watch (and I would just point out that I was at the Georgia Tech game while I was on R&R leave.)

Florida State has not been to the big show since 1998, and many fellow fans will always say that for the past few years, FSU has not been national public eye worthy.

My point is I’ve seen only four stars rise from the FSU basketball program (Sam Casell, Bob Sura, and Charlie Ward—all from the same squad—and FSU Hall of Famer Ron King) and only one NBA great, Dave Cowens and honestly, I want to see more. (Yes, I am aware under Leonard Hamilton’s lead, FSU has had four NBA draft choices in his first four years at Florida State; this team is composed of mostly freshmen, and they are still rising…)

This year's difference?

Toney Douglas: plain and simple.

Here are just a few little tiny tidbits about this man that you may have known or forgotten about...

Douglas was rated as one of the top ten players nationally by PrepStars recruiting magazine as a prep high school senior.

Toney didn't start his collegiate career at FSU. He was actually in the SEC as an Auburn Tiger.

In his freshman year with Auburn, he was one of only three players to start all 31 games. He was named on the freshman All-American team and finished with averages of 16.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals, not easily performed by most freshmen.

The only reason he left Auburn was because he declared for the NBA Draft (after ONE collegiate year) but then withdrew his name. At that point, he was given his release by Auburn. He began summer classes at FSU that year and sat out the season under NCAA transfer guidelines. He practiced with the 2004-5 team and waited for the upcoming sophomore year.

As Douglas's second home, FSU welcomed him into a struggling program that was destined annually to the NIT. In his sophomore year, he began the season on fire as he scored in double figures in 10 of his first 12 game, assisting now Los Angeles Clipper Al Thornton in FSU's climb. He was out for five games due to a broken wrist, (75.7 ppg with Douglas as compared to 65.4 ppg without Douglas), and the Seminoles were 5-7 against top-50 teams in the RPI with a healthy Douglas on the floor and 0-5 against top-50 RPI teams without him.

His junior year was much of the same; however, the program lost rising star Isaiah Swann with a career ending ACL tear five games in the season, and the Seminoles struggled to fill his place.

This year he is dominating the scoreboards, dropping 30 percent of the total team points into the net, including 37 percent of all three-pointers on the team. He is also the team leader in steals and assists.

This year, several ACC rival coaches have noticed this solid guard.

Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, after the then No. 2 Blue Devils won the ACC Opener in Tallahassee. "Douglas? Come on, wrap him up, I want to take him home, man. Jiminy Christmas, that kid's good. He's really good. I love that kid. He's a really good player." He went on to say he thought Douglas deserved to be nominated for national defensive player of the year.

North Carolina’s Roy Williams, after the then No. 6 Tar Heels won on a buzzer-shot three-pointer."How lucky we were," Roy Williams said. "That's the bottom line. Toney Douglas is a wrecking crew for them."

Virginia’s Dave Leitao: "He has confidence, he's got strength and he has worked on his game; he's in another place than most players."

Wake Forest’s Dino Gaudio: "He's a guy who, if you don't watch, can take over a game."

Miami’s Frank Haith: “He is one of the best guards in this league, which is as an all-around guard, because he does it on both ends. I think his leadership qualities show this year and his ability to just take over the game, particularly late in the game.”

Even journalists are encountering the "Toney Douglas experience"…

Jim Young, ACC Sports Journal: Could Toney Douglas Be ACC Player of the Year?

Overall, Douglas is the support the others lean on; however, other players are shaping the team statistics as well with their own contributions to the team.

Fellow Senior Uche Echefu averages 8.8 points a game this season and Junior Ryan Reid helps recover the ball with almost 15 percent of the team’s offensive rebounds.

Sophomore Derwin Kitchen is the team leader in defensive rebounds. Upcoming freshmen Chris Singleton, Luke Loucks, and Solomon Alabi delivers an average of almost 20 percent of the team’s steals, contributes almost 19 percent of the his team’s assists and leads the team in over 35 percent in blocked shots, respectively.

Most of the Nation is starting to see Garnet and Gold in their nightmares. With last night’s win over No. 13 Clemson and with two games left in regular season, (re-match at Duke on 3/3 and a home finale against Virginia Tech), added to a record of 22-7 (9-5 and tied for third place in conference), and a possible rising in the polls, the Florida State Seminoles should be a higher seed in the Conference Tournament and a real contender in the NCAA Tournament.

Having close game experience with teams such as then No. 3 (now No. 1) Pittsburgh, Duke, North Carolina, (and some wins against California, Clemson, Miami, and Florida) will definitely help in the long run against other teams in the March bubble.

Look for Hamilton, Douglas, and the rest of the crew to concrete their playing style, bringing their hard-earned efforts a reward this year, a long-awaited basketball National Championship.

Sad Day in Football: Peter Warrick Goes "Semi-Pro"?

This Florida State Seminole fan is DADGUM MAD!!!

Heisman Candidates and Winners, pay attention: THIS is what happens to you once you get hurt and older...

On Jan. 26, 2009, the Indoor Football League's Bloomington Extreme signed former Seminole receiver Peter Warrick for the 2009 season.

<What???>

Yes, America dubbed him Peter Wardrobe and still calls FSU "Free Shoes University" because of the illegal discount incident with Dillard's with fellow teammate and current New York Jet Laveranues Coles...

Yes, the front-runner for the 2000 Heisman Trophy was snubbed after his two-game suspension and media scrutiny. (Ron Dayne took the honors.)

Yes, he was released in 2005 after a subpar performance with the Cincinnati Bengals, the team that selected Warrick as the No. 4 Overall Pick in the 2000 Draft.

Yes, it is completely true that Seattle signed him, and in Super Bowl XL (40 for you non-Roman folk) he was used as the team's primary punt returner. As a reward for this, he was dropped after preseason the following year.

So WHY am I so angry, knowing there are so many negative statistics with Pete's career?

Two words: Kurt Warner.

Kurt Warner is not my favorite person, though right now he is assisting in my bro Quan Boldin's bid to relocate in the offseason... (I am predicting either Philly or Seattle.)

However, he also went (and is still in exempt status) in(to) Arena Football. He got his Super Bowl ring and on Feb. 1 will try for Number TWO with the Cardinals.

He was given a second chance.

There are unconfirmed rumors that Peter was contacted by several camps to attend (Miami, Carolina, Jacksonville, and the Jets) in 2007. In May 2008, he joined Montreal in the Canadian League, only to be released a month later (what a crock, eh!?)

Peter Warrick is about nine months younger than myself, yet he's been thrown away by the NFL. Not that I'm not happy for all the press he will receive for this great opportunity to showcase the "wonderful world of Indoor football" (versus Arena?), but I just don't understand...

He's not shooting people...

He's not cock-a-doodle-doo fighting...(or dogs) or gambling period...

He's not doing reality shows...

Possibly...this may be his last chance, to use this league (yes, I use the term loosely) as a stepping stone back into the Pro Club.

Maybe...the Jets will decide to let him play with his former teammate Coles...

Doubtfully...you will hear anything other than this article about this unless the coaches actually use him to his potential, versus the NFL's "I'm a spoiled brat and I am the star on the team, so nothing goes to that dude" attitude.

Definitely...I will be watching EVERYTHING he does and promoting him the ENTIRE WAY.

Here's a crazy idea...how about you fellow football fans do the same...

...they may need a WR in Arizona in a few months...

Dr. King Lives On In Sports (Satire)

*****Disclaimer*****

If you cannot comment correctly, please do not.

Secondly, this is a satire. This is not, nor is it meant to be, disrespectful in any way of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech that he gave on August 28, 1963. Instead, it is a memoriam of his efforts in relation of the world around us and our efforts at the B/R.

Lastly, this is only a commentary on the world of sports. It is not to have a direct impact in changing it.

All changes and additions will be parenthesized in <..>.

Thank you.

The Speech

I have a dream...that one day this nation will rise up and <realize the true meaning of equality: We take advantage of these truths and are self-righteous in thinking that all men and women are created equal.> <Regardless of your race, when you mention golf, you instantly think "Tiger", football could be "T.O.", "Anquan Boldin," "Jerry Rice", or "Donovan McNabb", basketball is obviously "M.J.", "Shaq", or "Kobe." These men are far from equal in their respective sports, yet at the time of this speech, they would not be today, if not for you...>

I have a dream...that one day on the red hills of Georgia <that the Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets> will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood <after one kicks the crap out of the other.> (Seriously, can't we all just get along?)

I have a dream...that one day even the state of <Ole> Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of <inability to got to the National Championship Game>, sweltering with the heat of
, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom <to smack around the Gators> and justice <of obtaining 2009 WRs Pat Patterson and Marlon Brown from them.>

I have a dream...that <the black coaches will one day work in a league> where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the <way they incorporate the spirit of the game, the absorption of camaraderie, and the amount of care they use on their players>. I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its <thundering fans>, one day right down in Alabama, <The Herd> will be able to join hands with <Auburn fans> as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day <Death> <V>alley shall be <filled to capacity>, and every <team that enters> shall <not> be made <a reference of road kill>, the rough <smack talk of the players> will be made plain, and the crooked <wise-cracking commentators> will be made <to talk> straight <instead of going with the odds>, and the glory <plays> of the <coaches> shall be revealed and all <the fans> shall see it together.

This is our hope. This is the faith that I will go back to <Florida State> with. With this faith we will be able to <stomp> out <the racists of the nation and avoid the haters>. With this faith we will be able to transform the <weaker opinions> of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to <play> together, to pray <at games> together, to struggle <through that dadgum it BCS> together, to <avoid go<ing> to jail together <Tyson...Vick...PacMan...>, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free <of the BCS and the racists> one day. And this will be the day, this will be the day when all of <the world's> children will be able to sing <at all American games>, "My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring!" And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true. < I didn't have to change ANY of that, you see...>

And so let freedom ring -- from the prodigious <hockey rinks> of New Hampshire.

Let freedom ring -- from the mighty <Knicks> of New York.

Let freedom ring -- from the heightening <playoff games> of Pennsylvania (NFL teams...Eagles and Steelers).

Let freedom ring -- from the <Buffalo and Rockies fans> of Colorado.

Let freedom ring -- from the curvaceous <cheerleaders> of <the University of Southern> California. <and every OTHER college…in the words of Johnny Bravo, “Whoa, MOMMA!!!>

But not only that.

Let freedom ring -- from the <point guards of Davidson.>

Let freedom ring -- from the <Longhorns of Texas.>

Let freedom ring -- from every <perfect season of the Utah Utes, stolen from> every <BCS winner>, let freedom ring!

And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every <university> and every <professional sports organization>, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of <the worlds's athletes>, <all sexes, all races, all countries> will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the <pre-game selection>,

O! say can you see by the dawn's early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.

And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

<love that version from Jordin Sparks in the NFC Championship game...heck I love Jordin too...mmmhmm!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcdpiL60jXg >

Finally, the last part of the speech, the mostly quoted, the crescendoed climactic finale...

"Free at last, free at last.

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last." - MLKjr

No, THANK YOU, Martin. Thank you for giving us the ability to love one another regardless, thank you for the faith we would overcome the race and sex card and not judge on the cover, but the words and ideas beneath, and thank you for the speech I changed to fit into the sports world, but the meaning remained the same to me...

Thank you, Dr. King, for allowing my sports figures I look up to be a different race than myself, and for my appreciation of your words to help me live in serenity without the constant negativity of some of my race's bigotry still today.

I thank you, my brother, for existing and for your overwatch every day. You are missed...

---------

Original speech can be found at http://www.freemaninstitute.com/Dream.htm

The Battle of 2009: Nat'l Champ Florida Gators Stand Off Against...Themselves?

You probably think that a Florida State Seminole fan should not have any reason to publish anything about their archrival team, the Florida Gators, because they would not have anything productive to say...

...Well, normally, you'd be right...

However, there's so much time after the National Championship game until next season that this college football fan thinks that there are elements within this Florida Gator team that need to be focused on and eliminated before they can have a successful back-to-back championship.

(...What did the Nole just say about the Gators? Is he going to tell them how to fix their program so they can WIN? WHAT?!!)

NO, my fellow Gator Haters, I am not going to promote the Gators and add to their already "sharp-toothed" ego (yeah, I know it was bad...but it felt good.)

My purpose of doing this is to provide a look into the organization from a non-SEC point of view (and honestly, to show them people ARE watching them). Other than that, I know there may be "some" players and a handful of fans that may actually care about things like camaraderie and teamwork and building a legacy (instead of a rap sheet).

Anyway, here goes...

Of course, if you talk about Florida these days, you HAVE to discuss Timothy Richard Tebow, nicknamed "Tim" and "Superman" (though not sure if "Superman" is meant for his impenetrable ability to avoid injury, his "jump pass" that he has taken as his own, or his humanitarian lifestyle).

Before I continue, however, here is some trivia for you to ponder (no, this article is about the Gators; all Christian Ponder fans need not look here).

1) All-American and American Heisman Winner Tim Tebow was actually born in the Philippines.

2) Tim Tebow actually finished a game on a broken leg in high school.

3) During her pregnancy with Tim, Pam Tebow fell into a coma after contracting amoeba dysentery, and the result led to her placental abruption, a condition in which the placenta detaches from the uterine wall and voids the fetus of oxygen and nutrients.

(Before I continue, please have respect here, people; not only for the intense talking about all this medical jargon concerning Tim's mom, but also for the rude comments you are thinking concerning the lack of air he received prior to birth or the abortion jokes. This is a human being and that would be SO wrong...even if he is a Gator...seriously, though, no bad comments about this or I will report you. But I digress...)

4) He has won the James E. Sullivan Award, which in itself is spectacular because it's award to only one athlete a year in any amateur sport throughout the country. Some well-known recipients in the past two decades are Michael Phelps in 2003, Michelle Kwan and Sarah Hughes in 2001 and 2002, respectively, Peyton Manning in 1997, and Charlie Ward in 1993.

Puts him up there in respect, right? It should. Tim Tebow is an American (hmmm?) hero and household name. All teams that have played him curse him, all the fans boo him, and all coaches fear his shotgun arm and rushing legs. Statistically in high school he had a total of 62 rushing TDs and 95 passing TDs. Yes, it's high school, I get it, but ama-za-zing never the less.

It is pleasing to see that he had the reasoning to come back and finish his senior year instead of risking the same fate as his predecessors did in the pro league. <and I'm sure Urban Meyer gave him a "you owe me BIG, buddy, for the chomp against Oklahoma!!!">

Speaking of Urban Meyer, you have to include him in this Gator work-up. A couple things about him you may not know...

1) Florida wasn't the first team he has had success with. He was the head coach for another team in 2004 that earned him Coach of the Year; the team went undefeated that year. Who was that mysterious team? The Utah Utes. (That's right, people; this year wasn't the first year they went undefeated and didn't go to the big show.)

2) He has shown extreme interest in coaching Notre Dame.

3) Meyer has a Bachelor's Degree in...wait for it...psychology (chuckle) while playing DB at U of Cincinnati. He received his Master's Degree in Sports Administration at Ohio State.

4) Urban Meyer was drafted in the 1982 draft...the Major League baseball draft...to the Atlanta Braves, but only played minor league for two years.

Urban Meyer has got to take his skills as a head coach (which you do have to admire, since his wins versus losses are impressive) and mentor his junior coaches into working his magic in 2009. He has his star QB back and may even have Percy Harvin and his wonderfully egotistical mouthpiece back to aid him in his back-to-back championships.

The other issue that is crucial is recruiting. Recruiting overall in Florida shouldn't be hard, right? Well, actually, yeah, it's probably the, like, most hardest ev-eeerr. Geez...

Okay, sorry, blonde moment...

With the de-commits of Nick Kasa and Greg Reid and the fluctuations of Nu'Keese Richardson, Adam Gorney, and TE Orson Charles, it's like the youngins are scared of being at Florida right now...does that make ANY sense, um...National Championship, platter, building block...should be a no-brainer. But apparently Signing Day will be interesting.

Three factors...three key things...three parts of a team that needs to work together...or Florida will go down next season fast...

As someone pointed out about NCAA basketball giant Duke, "This year, you have a big fat bulls-eye on you, and we're getting closer to hitting the center..."

...Florida, watch your back and dodge when you can...every team in the country wants to bring you down...

Florida Vs. Oklahoma 2009: Deja Vu?

So I thought very seriously about my first article, and wondered, "You know what? I have three definite topics and I will do those first..." Yeah, not so much.

Inspiration grabbed me by the horns (sorry, bad pun, Texas fans, but it's the first of many; you're just going to have to used to them), and here I go...

Knowing everyone who enjoys college football is watching the 2009 National Championship between the Florida Gators and the Oklahoma Sooners, watching Oklahoma's star quarterback Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, going against last year's Heisman winner, Florida's elite Tim Tebow and this year's runner-up, I came to the conclusion I would do a mid-cap.

Well, here I am typing this here in Iraq at 0500 in the morning, which should prove a little more dedication toward the subject. I know, I hear you readers yelling, "Get ON with it!" Fair enough.

As I am watching this game, it strikes me odd that I thought I had seen this game before. A flowing offense between two powerhouse teams, coaching geniuses Bobby Bowden and Bob Stoops, a battle between two Heisman candidates, a great defensive battle, and the No. 2 team heavily favored.

Then it hit me. The National Championship of 2001 between the undefeated Oklahoma Sooners and the 12-1 Florida State Seminoles. This is a recollection of that impressive game and season during the duration of THIS impressive game here in 2009.

By the way, it is halftime in the game, and both teams have a mere seven points apiece, with the quarterbacks already throwing picks, showing that my prediction of a close one was very accurate.

Coming off a previous great year, Florida State worked diligently to repeat their success from the 1999 season in which they went undefeated, as well as were No. 1 in the polls from the season's first kickoff until the last second lapsed in the 1999 Sugar Bowl. Oklahoma was working on becoming a contender with coach Bob Stoops, in his sophomore year and steadily making a name for himself.

Heisman-winning QB Chris Weinke was having a great year at the helm of the Seminoles, but runner-up Sooner Josh Heupel was also in the running to rejuvenate the chances of Oklahoma to win their upset game.

And they did. An ultimate battle of top-ranked defenses endured, stopping the pass from Weinke to Anquan Boldin (how did that happen?), and only giving up a safety in the last 55 seconds of the game, which led to a recovered onside kick, only to be picked off in the end zone, stopping a miracle comeback. Oklahoma was undefeated and deserved to win that bowl.

The Heisman list for 2000 had such names as Purdue's Drew Brees, TCU's LaDainian Tomlinson, and Virginia Tech's Michael Vick. Weinke would go on to be drafted in Round Four of the 2001 NFL draft. However, Vick was First round, first pick, with Tomlinson also in the first round, and Brees first pick, second round.

Was this a premonition of how the NFL would treat this Heisman winner after he lost this game to Oklahoma? Time has proved that this was true. Let's hope that Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford remember that on the next level, it is a little different.

As for the present game, Florida just scored 24-14, and it looks as if we have another upset. Urban Meyer has coached his team to two National Championships in three seasons. The college football season is over. Next year, Florida, next year..."you are MINE!!!" No, actually, next year it is apparent that whoever faces Florida will have to make a statement early.

Calling all SEC powerhouses from the past (Alabama for certain, and South Carolina secondly) to promote the Florida Gator Tail Cook-Off. (Yummy...tastes like chicken.) And oh by the way, Spurrier, I'm sure it irks you to have your past team beat up on you like it has in the past seasons. Can we please contain them just a bit? Thank you...

Congratulations to the Florida Gators for winning a good game and for allowing history to repeat itself in this remarkable coincidence.

Final score: Florida 24, Oklahoma 14
