2008 NBA Mock Draft

2008 NBA Mock Draft:

1.) Chicago Bulls—Derrick Rose

I want to start out by saying I think this pick is a huge mistake. The Bulls seem locked into Rose, and as a fan of the division rival Pacers, I could not be happier that he is the way they are leaning.

Derrick Rose will be a solid NBA point guard, probably easily an above average one, but they are passing on a player that will be a first ballot Hall of Famer and a multiple time NBA All-Star. I will talk more about him when he gets picked though; I don’t want to get ahead of myself.

I keep hearing people refer to Rose as a tall point guard who can dominate the NBA physically, but Rose is only 6’2” which makes him shorter than Jason Kidd, Kirk Hinrich, Jamaal Tinsley, and Devin Harris. Rose will never pass as well as Kidd, shoot (or defend) as well as Hinrich, handle the ball as well as Tinsley or penetrate as well as Harris.

What I see Derrick Rose becoming is a Deron Williams with less strength and less explosive scoring ability. He is also not nearly as strong as Williams and will take a beating in the NBA when he gets in the paint.

Of course there are positives to Derrick’s game—he is very quick, has a high basketball IQ, and will be very able when it comes to running a team’s offense. He possesses a nice array of ways to score from 5-15 feet, and will probably develop a nice floater adding to that versatility, but he will never bring to the Bulls what Beasley could right away or in the long term.

2.) Miami Heat—Michael Beasley

I have a hard time believing that the Heat are really shopping this pick as has been widely reported. I think in the end you will see Miami sit here and get far and away the best player in this draft and we will quickly see them with the top level Eastern Conference teams again.

Michael Beasley is a hybrid of so many players past and present, and is as much of a sure thing that we’ve seen in the draft since Tim Duncan.

He combines Charles Barkley’s rebounding as an undersized power forward, Antawn Jamison’s versatility and ability to score from anywhere on the floor, Shawn Marion’s explosive leaping and offensive rebounding talents, and Carmelo Anthony’s quick first step and strength. I am not saying what Beasley could become; I am listing what Beasley is right now.

When he gets the ball down low he is nearly unstoppable because he has so many moves he can score with. He dominated teams last year who would collapse all five players to the paint every time he touched the ball. Oh yeah—he has a pretty nice jumper too.

I will even go as far as to say that in 15-20 years when we are looking back on Beasley’s career we will be talking about a top 50 all time player in this league.

The only drawback is that he is less than stellar defensively, but I saw some definite improvement in his defense as the season went on last year. He will probably always be somewhat of a liability defensively, but there is a real possibility that he could lead the league in scoring in a couple of years, so you just hope for whatever improvement you can get on that end and welcome his offense with open arms.

3.) Minnesota Timberwolves—O.J. Mayo

Personally I have Mayo listed as the second best player in this draft behind Beasley. You hear the same thing about Mayo every time he is talked about—great first step and excellent ability to clear space to get off his jumper.

These are the qualities that make Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, Tracy McGrady etc. elite wing scorers. We will have to wait to see if he will be able to do it at the same level that those guys do, but there is no question that he is that type of player.

The concern with O.J. is that he is a good four or five inches shorter than all of those guys, but his worst case scenario is pretty much Ben Gordon, and he is a far better defender than Gordon is.

O.J. Also handles the ball very well and could play some point.

4.) Seattle Sonics—Brook Lopez

Seattle has a tough choice here. They have had bad luck taking centers high in the draft before, and Bayless is a very solid player who would bring scoring punch next to Durant.

I think Seattle settles on Lopez because they feel like you can get a guy like Bayless more often than a reliable center like Brook Lopez.

Brook has a very nice low-post game, and is an underrated defender. He isn’t the quickest or most athletic, but he knows how to use his body and would be a nice front court complement to Chris Wilcox and his athleticism.

5.) Memphis Grizzlies—Kevin Love

Kevin Love is an excellent outlet passer, probably the best we’ve seen in the draft since Wes Unseld. Love’s basketball IQ is also the highest out of any of the top five picks.

Kevin is just too perfect a fit for Memphis to pass on here. Eric Gordon is a possibility, but I think they end up taking Love who fits their system to a T. He will be perfect starting the break and will give them a solid defender and rebounder.

Another thing people forget about Love is that he is a decent outside shooter and will knock down the midrange jumper with some consistency in the NBA. I think he is the type of big you could pair with a jump shooting big, or a banger. Very versatile big man.

6.) New York Knicks—Danilo Gallinari

There has been a lot of hype the last few days linking Gallinari to the Knicks, and I think they are becoming pretty comfortable with taking him here.

I haven’t seen much of him other than highlight reels, but the Knicks need help everywhere, and he will probably be a good fit for D’Antoni’s system.

7.) Los Angeles Clippers—Jerryd Bayless

The Clippers are thrilled to see Bayless get to this point and they take him easily. Bayless has the ability to play off the ball and be a high scoring shooting guard or he could play point. Both are positions of need for the Clippers, so I see no way they let him slip any further.

8.) Milwaukee Bucks—Joe Alexander

This is a lock here. Skiles and Alexander are a good mix, Milwaukee needs a small forward, and there is no way Alexander goes any higher. I feel as confident in this one as I do in Rose going to Chicago.

Alexander brings a very versatile game to the Bucks, but he is still raw. I could see Skiles turning on him at some point and ending up burying him on the bench, but if he is patient, Alexander will develop in to a premier small forward.

9.) Charlotte Bobcats—Anthony Randolph

Charlotte is extremely disappointed in Lopez and Love being gone here, so they take the big man with the potential instead. Randolph is a project, but he has legit NBA size, legit NBA athleticism, and can do a ton of things well with the ball. He seemed to be slipping these last couple weeks, but I think Jordan is going to try and make a splash with this pick.

Ford, and the Pacers now have three excellent scorers from the wings in Gordon, Dunleavy, and Granger. It also is a pick that helps the fan base as they get the IU star. All that’s left is trading Tinsley and maybe people will start coming back to Pacers games.

Houston has a lot of guys set to step into bigger roles this upcoming year, so they take the project in Ajinca instead of someone who is going to help right away.

26.) San Antonio Spurs—Courtney Lee

San Antonio’s picks never seem to make much sense when they happen, but this one makes perfect sense. Lee is very skilled, and can actually help a team right away; he is actually a type of player San Antonio rarely takes. With Finley and Barry aging in their second unit, they need a wing man who gives them youth and stability for the future.

I think Portland wants to wind up with a PG in this draft, so they reach for Weaver.

Many expected McGee to go much higher, but this is a fine fit for him. He can go into a team with no pressure to develop right away, work on his jump shot and low post game, and probably develop into a pretty good all around big man.

Detroit would like to get a small forward to backup Prince, and Walker is more of a shooting guard, but he’ll do well enough for them here. It is hard to anticipate exactly what Detroit will look like next year as they are definitely in the blockbuster trade market. This pick is hard to forecast, but I think Walker is a safe one.

30.) Boston Celtics—Nathan Jawai

With the final first rounder the Celtics go for the Aussie with the explosive game and they let him develop for as long as he needs to.

Indiana Pacers: Mike Dunleavy, Jr. Arrives

When Mike Dunleavy, Jr. was drafted third overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2002, he was just beginning the start of five very rough years in the Bay Area.

Dunleavy was called an underachiever and a bust. Still, he was signed to a five-year extension worth $44 million after three less-than-stellar years with Golden State and was tagged as "overpaid" as well.

Adding fuel to the fire, he was constantly booed by Oakland fans. When Don Nelson arrived in Golden State in 2006, he called the player "soft", and Dunleavy found himself at the end of Nelson's bench.

In January of 2007, Dunleavy was traded along with Troy Murphy, Ike Diogu, and Keith McLeod to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Stephen Jackson, Al Harrington, Sarunas Jasikevicius, and Josh Powell.

Dunleavy played 43 games in the rest of the ‘06-‘07 season with the Pacers. While he did improve his game on all fronts, he was still a long way off from being worthy of the number three overall pick. Plus, he hadn't exactly shaken his unflattering nicknames.

Meanwhile, the Warriors seemed to be clear winners of the trade with Jackson and Harrington playing key roles in a first round upset of the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks.

Fast forward nine months and you’ll see that Dunleavy is coming off his second straight game with 36 points—marking the sixth time this season that he has surpassed 30 in a game. In his previous six NBA seasons, he did that a total of five times.

This is also the third time he's netted 36 this year, a number he barely sniffed in minutes, much less points, while in Golden State.

In the most recent 36-point outing, Dunleavy shook the "soft" label for good. He was popped in the mouth in the second quarter, forcing him back to the locker room to get a stitch. He was back in the game within minutes, right on track.

This isn't the first time the "soft, overpaid, bust" has shown toughness this year. It seems like he's bleeding from his mouth or head just about every game, when he's not taking a charge.

This isn't the first time he's torn up the stat sheet this year, either. He's posting career highs in points (18.2), field goal percentage (48 percent), three point percentage (39 percent), assists (3.4), rebounds (5.4), and free throw percentage (84 percent).

With the Pacers in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference and the Warriors battling for a playoff spot in the much tougher West, it is hard to say the Pacers won that trade. However, Dunleavy's emergence as the player he was drafted to be is worth noting.

And while most pundits would have told you Stephen Jackson was the best player changing residences in that deal, at this point it would be hard to argue against the far more effective Dunleavy.

One thing is for sure. Dunleavy has found a home. He is playing with a ton of confidence and it is showing. People may not quite realize it yet, but Mike is an all-star caliber player, and in the weak East, he may even get a chance to show it for one series in the playoffs.

Eric Gordon vs. OJ Mayo

With the NBA playoffs approaching and the College Basketball season nearing its climax, as an Indiana Pacers fan I find myself in unfamiliar territory. Usually at this time I'm getting pumped for the year the Pacers are finally going to finish the job and win the title. Instead, my Pacers are 23-36 with not a lot of hope for the future so my focus turns to the draft.

Before this College Basketball season started, the consensus would be that OJ Mayo was going to be the first shooting guard taken. As the season has gone on, Eric Gordon has continued to rise on draft boards while OJ Mayo has declined to late lottery territory.

Both of these freshman are leading their teams in scoring, and the similarities in their numbers cannot be ignored.

Eric Gordon is putting up 21.4 points on 45% shooting with 38 percent from beyond the arc. He's grabbing 3.3 rebounds per contest and dishing out 2.5 assists.

Mayo is scoring 20.1 a game, with a 44% field goal percentage and 39% from the three-point line. Mayo is at 4.4 rebounds and an even three assists per game.

Don't try and figure out which has the better NBA body either, because they both measure up to 6'4" and weigh in within 10 pounds of each other with Mayo at 210 and Gordon at 220.

It is impossible to look at their stat sheets and give a clear-cut answer to which player will be the better pro so I'll break it down in to a few important categories to try and figure out which one will make a better pro.

Defense

Most guys in the position of these two get picked because of their offensive games with the idea of trying to mold them in to good defenders over time. This is not the case with these guys. Both are freakishly athletic and use their brains well defending on ball. Both have the ability to play the passing lanes, but neither has shown a trend of going for steals too often. Neither one saves their legs for offense as most young players as gifted as they are offensively do.

This one extremely close, but Eric Gordon has more relevant NBA experience because at Indiana he has had a chance to play a lot more man to man then OJ has because USC plays more of a gimmicky defense. This may be somewhat canceled out because OJ has had to guard more talented perimeter scorers playing in the Pac-10, but I have been slightly more impressed with Gordon's lateral quickness. Edge: Gordon.

Outside Shooting

Both of these guys can fall in love with the three-point shot a little bit too often, but with the close three-point line in College Hoops, I can't really blame them. Both of these guys utilize the midrange jumper well and it will translate to their NBA careers nicely if they don't get enamored with becoming outside shooters in the NBA.

Eric Gordon takes a lot of shots from way beyond the arc in college which makes me question his shot selection a little bit and I think with the physical nature of the NBA around the rim Gordon is more likely then Mayo to be a guy that falls in love with the three at the next level. Mayo is a smooth high IQ basketball player that just continues to improve his shot and has better overall mechanics then Gordon does. Edge: OJ.

Attacking the Rim

Eric Gordon is excellent at getting to the rack, finishes well and gets to the line often. He shoots free throws very well, and has actually taken almost double the amount of free throws Mayo has attempted this year. While that might make you think that Gordon is the tougher player, I think its more about the roles they have been given. Gordon gets in the lane, throws his body around and tries to get to the line while Mayo has acted as more of a facilitator when dribble driving. Mayo is more crafty with the ball and gets easier baskets then Gordon, but the NBA is a league of getting to the charity stripe and Gordon will do that more effectively then Mayo. Edge: Gordon.

Ballhandling/Passing

I'm combining these two categories because both of these guys fit in to the "tweener" category in the sense that both are a little bit undersized to play the shooting guard position in the NBA.

Mayo played a ton of point guard in High School, but most of those responsibilities to go Daniel Hackett for the Trojans. Even though Mayo hasn't had those responsibilities at the College level, he has still shown enough to distance himself from Gordon quite easily in this category. OJ has the skills to play the Point Guard a little bit in the NBA if he is teamed up with another good ball handler in the backcourt. Eric Gordon is a prototypical two-guard and will never be confused for a point guard. For the first time in any category, OJ distances himself from Gordon in something. Edge: Mayo.

Intangibles

OJ Mayo has had an NBA swagger since his Sophomore year of High School which has been both a positive and a cause for concern about his NBA career. Many NBA scouts are worried that OJ has too much of an ego to be able to be just one of the fish when he reaches the highest level in the world. Gordon is a guy that by all accounts is a humble kid that considers himself a student of the game.

At this point it is just a matter of preference. OJ does most of the talking in USC's huddles. He helps Tim Floyd with scouting of other teams and has actually helped Floyed expand some of USC's playbook this season. Gordon understands that Indiana is DJ White's team and is a quiet guy. They contrast each other in a lot of ways, and it all depends on what type of a person you want for your team. Edge: Even.

So with both of these guys winning two categories, you can see how close the two of them really are. I think it is all about the situation your team is in when it comes to which one should be taken higher. Minnesota, Seattle, Philadelphia and the LA Clippers would all be good homes for OJ Mayo, while I think Charlotte, New York, Sacramento and Memphis would be better fits for Eric Gordon.

Why Jason Kidd Will Bring the NBA Title to Dallas

While the rest of the Western Conference frantically went after big men to combat the new addition to the Lakers, Pau Gasol, the Dallas Mavericks went in the opposite direction by trading for a point guard that once shined in the Dallas limelight. The Mavericks traded point guard Devin Harris, forwards Maurice Ager and Trenton Hassell, and center DeSagana Diop, along with the previously retired Keith Van Horn in exchange for Kidd and forwards Antoine Wright and Malik Allen.

The Mavs are 4-2 since Kidd joined the team, but we really have only begun to see the impact he will have with a team who was already contending for the championship.

What Kidd does on the floor has been well documented. He's a triple double threat every night, and if he doesn't get it, its more than likely because he didn't score 10 points, then that he didn't snag 10 boards or dish out the assists. With this Dallas team, everything he does well will be magnified because he fills such a need for them.

Dallas was stunned in the first round of the playoffs last year by the surprising Golden State Warriors for one big reason: Golden State ran the floor and got easy baskets, while Dallas struggled with their half-court offense. Dirk Nowitzki was bothered by the smaller Stephen Jackson and couldn't create his own shot like he wants to. With Kidd, the offense will run through Dirk much less and you will see much more movement and good looks.

What Jason Kidd gives them, is the ability to run the floor without changing their philosophy. Kidd is the best in the league at throwing a bounce pass from one end of the floor to the other for a layup. Jason Terry is one of the fastest players in the league and will benifit greatly from this. Dallas will be able to get easy baskets without having to think about running the floor every time they touch the ball like Phoenix does (or did, before the Shaq trade).

Kidd also impacts the game on the other side of the floor. In that series against Golden State last year, the Mavericks gave up over 105 points per game. When you take in to account all the easy scoring Kidd creates, that alone will make the Mavericks a more focused defensive team. In fact, Kidd has been named to one of the NBAs all-defensive teams nine times in his 13 year career.

For those of you who believe the hyperbole about Dirk Nowitzki being a poor playoff performer, try and remember his 2006 playoff run. He was the best player in the league in a lot of people's eyes before the Mavericks blew a 2-0 lead against Miami in the finals. If that doesn't convince you, the fact that he steps up his averages in just about every statistical category in the postseason should.
