2010 NFL Mock Draft: Week 12 Edition

1. St. Louis Rams - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
It’s pretty safe to say that the Rams will draft a quarterback. Neither Marc Bulger nor Kyle Boller have given them reason to do otherwise. With solid weapons like Steven Jackson, Brandon Gibson and Donnie Avery and an offensive line that’s got some good young talent, Jimmy Clausen could step right in and make an impact.

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Such a cliche pick, but the Buccaneers really need a big anchor on their defensive line. With Suh’s relentless motor and nose for the football, he’d be perfect for a Buccaneer team with loads of young talent on offense, but a defense that really needs some help.

3. Cleveland Browns - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
In a division full of Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu, the Browns could use a playmaking safety. Eric Berry is a once in a lifetime prospect, in the mold of the late Sean Taylor. Berry’s natural instincts and versatility will allow him to step right into a Browns team aching for playmakers on either side of the ball.

4. Detroit Lions - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
The Lions will go in the trenches here; no doubt about it. I have them opting for Gerald McCoy, the fierce Sooner tackle who compares favorably to players like Tommie Harris and Albert Haynesworth, with a quick first step and a warrior attitude.

5. Buffalo Bills - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
With a new regime getting ready to step in, we will likely see the Bills draft a new quarterback, as Trent Edwards is obviously not the future and Ryan Fitzpatrick is nothing more then a decent game-manager. If Shanahan indeed gets the job, then this pick will likely be Jake Locker, because he draws comparisons physically to Jay Cutler and John Elway; mobile guys with big arms. However, I think most other coaches would go with Bradford, who’s body of work (more time as a starter, plus major success in his stints) makes him a bit safer then Locker.

6. Kansas City Chiefs - Russell Okung, T, Oklahoma State
Congratulations to the Chiefs on pulling the upset of the Steelers on Sunday; it seems their young talent on both sides is meshing together. However, the Chiefs put a lot of money into Matt Cassel and still need to protect him better. Okung is the prototypical blindside protector, with fantastic footwork and the ability to both get a push in the run game and keep ends at bay.

7. Oakland Raiders - Jake Locker, QB, Washington
Raiders fans, be happy. I almost gave you Tim Tebow here. However, I think the organization will revolt against Al Davis’ desire to take a big-armed, mobile quarterback to take… a big-armed mobile quarterback? Jake Locker has only one year in Steve Sarkisian’s pro-style offense, but he has impressed greatly under it. He might opt to stay in school to improve his draft stock even further with a second year under a pro system.

8. Seattle Seahawks - Charles Brown, T, USC
The losers of Super Bowl’s XL and XLI have essentially given us the blueprints on how to dismantle Super Bowl quality teams. But to be fair, the Seahawks have been horribly ravaged by injuries, which could be the reason they’ve fallen off from perennial NFC contenders in just two years. Walter Jones, the Seahawks left tackle, is one of these injury prone players who also is coming to the end of his potentially Hall of Fame career. Charles Brown is a smaller offensive tackle (only about 295 pounds), but he’s amazingly athletic and would fit in the Seahawks zone-blocking scheme.

9. Washington Redskins - Bryan Bulaga, T, Iowa
The Redskins are in a bit of a rut here; they’re at a spot in the top 10 where the top offensive tackles / quarterbacks are likely off the board. Fortunately though, the Redskins have a chance to snatch Bryan Bulaga, my #2 ranked offensive tackle. Bulaga missed some time early in the season with reported swine flu, but upon his return he’s been a big reason for Iowa’s success this season; he’s a fantastic run blocker and works great in pass protection.

10. Tennessee Titans - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
The Titans have rebounded well after their 0-6 start, but still could use some help as far as the defensive side of the ball goes. They’re first priority should be beefing up their pass defense, which can be done with a top cornerback to replace Nick Harper, or to draft Derrick Morgan, the young, relentless pass-rusher. Kyle Vanden Bosch, Jevon Kearse and Dave Ball, the three top defensive ends for the Titans, all have expiring contracts this offseason. Morgan can step right in and make an impact.

11. San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina Panthers) - Joe Haden, CB, Florida
The 49ers really shock me; they have a lot of holes but still find ways to win some games every year. Luckily, the 49ers will have two high-to-mid first round picks to address the issues with the pass rush, secondary and offensive line. Here, they get the top cornerback in this class Joe Haden. He’s a great athlete playing top-notch defense in the SEC, but he also has the ball skills to make a difference in the NFL.

12. Denver Broncos (from Chicago Bears) - Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama
The Broncos are back in the position of “Okay… We looked great early, what happened?”. Here’s what happened; they’ve allowed 441 rushing yards in their 4 losses (although they did hold the Steelers to 17 total rushing yards) after playing such good defense early in the season. Terrence Cody will provide a big anchor in the middle of that 3-4 defense.

13. New York Jets - Damian Williams, WR, USC
The Braylon Edwards experiment has been a bit of a failure besides the two Miami games. Edwards hands still aren’t on an NFL level and I’m not sure if the Jets resign him. If Not, Damian Williams, Mark Sanchez’s USC teammate will fit right in. Personally, I love Damian Williams; he’s an extremely crisp route runner, by far the best in this class and some of the best I’ve ever seen out of a college receiver. Not only that, but he has decent speed and really soft hands. Truly an extremely polished prospect.

14. San Francisco 49ers - Bruce Campbell, T, Maryland
It doesn’t matter who the 49ers put at quarterback if they can’t protect him. Joe Staley has given up 3 sacks this season and seems better suited to play right tackle. Bruce Campbell is an athletic left tackle who has seen his stock rise exponentially this season.

15. Atlanta Falcons - Everson Griffen, DE, USC
A bit too high for Griffen? Maybe. But for a guy whose stock has fluctuated more then the stock market, maybe he’s finally settling in as a first-round prospect. Everson Griffen was being touted as a physical freak last year, but failed to produce. However, the 6’3, 275 pound end has a 4.6 40 yard dash with good production at a big-time program. Griffen’s returned to the 1st-round consideration.

16. Baltimore Ravens - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
To those who think Dez Bryant’s suspension will hurt his stock, don’t fret. It wasn’t a drug or character related charge, and to be quite honest the full year’s suspension was completely unfair. Everything scouts wanted to see, Bryant had shown them. He’s a play maker with fantastic hands and size. The Ravens top four receiver are all free agents at the end of this season (Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton, Kelley Washington, Demetrius Williams) and two of them are over 30 years old. The Ravens could go receiver in the first two rounds to get depth at the position.

17. Miami Dolphins - Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU
I love what the Dolphins have done this season; they have a stout defense, a solid line and have young talent all around. However, one position where they lack a true starter is wide receiver. Ted Ginn Jr. is really nothing more then a Nate Washington-esque deep threat and Greg Camarillo is a savvy veteran who can play a Brian Finneran role but isn’t starting material. Davone Bess has been playing well, and pairing him with the 6’3 LSU Tiger Brandon LaFell, who compares to Anquan Boldin with his physical nature and yards after catch ability, could really make the Dolphins offense potent and give them a shot at a Super Bowl in the near future.

18. Houston Texans - Ras-I Dowling, S, Virginia
The Texans have played very well on defense lately. However, they could use some help at free safety, a position the Texans have never had a solid player at in their history. Ras-I Dowling can give them that rangy center-fielder to play deep alongside Bernard Pollard.

19. Seattle Seahawks (from Denver Broncos) - CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
The Seahawks running game has been stagnant this season, no matter who they’ve tried to run with. CJ Spiller, a Heisman candidate for the Clemson Tigers, is an explosive runner who can run, catch and return kicks. He’d give the Seahawks an explosive, Chris Johnson type weapon out of the backfield.

20. Green Bay Packers - Trent Williams, T, Oklahoma
Tough spot for the Pack here, who absolutely need an offensive lineman. Trent Williams can step right in for Allen Barbre, and succeed in the NFL as a right tackle. My only worry would be if he can play left tackle. However, I’m not sure the Packers are more worried about getting a left tackle or just offensive line help in general.

21. Jacksonville Jaguars - Greg Hardy, DE, Mississippi
The Jaguars are really flying under the radar at the moment. Currently, they’re in the position to get one of the wildcard spots in the playoffs. However, if there’s one glaring weakness for this Jaguars team, it’s the pass rush. They have only 10 sacks to their name the entire season. Greg Hardy, though injury prone, is truly the best pass-rusher in this class, dropping due to those aforementioned injuries.

22. New York Giants - Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama
Antonio Pierce could be looking at his final season in a New York Giants uniform. Even if he stays, the Giants are looking at the best player available. McClain could potentially go Top 10 and Jerry Reese frequently goes BPA, which is how he’s built this Giants team.

23. Philadelphia Eagles - Anthony Davis, T, Rutgers
The Eagles offensive line was supposed to have been the difference in getting them to the Super Bowl this year… What happened? Well, injuries took their toll and, to be honest, none of the players were really that great to begin with. Jason Peters is one of the most overrated tackles in the league, and adding Anthony Davis can give this loaded Eagles team depth or a future starter.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers - Jason Fox, T, Miami
The Steelers really need to address the offensive line. If they could protect Ben Roethlisberger and open even more holes for Rashard Mendenhall, this team would be right back where they should be; in Super Bowl contention. Jason Fox is your prototypical left tackle, with excellent footwork (maybe the second best in this class?)

25. Arizona Cardinals - Jerry Hughes, DE/OLB, TCU
The Cardinals have built themselves a nice little team here, both for now and for the future. Their defense has young stars and, with adding Jerry Hughes, gain a young talented pass-rusher that can play in their 3-4/4-3 hybrid scheme. I worry about this team after Kurt Warner retires though; do they have a franchise QB in Leinart? He hasn’t shown it in his limited time this year.

26. Cincinnati Bengals - Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
The Bengals have made a huge comeback. Ask me 3 months ago, I could give you a laundry list of needs this Bengals team has. Now? They’re 7-3 and have a chance at a first-round bye. This team is strangely without a major blemish; the only concern might be the two expiring contracts of guards Bobbie Williams and Nate Livings. Mike Iupati is a fantastic guard prospect, with the size, athleticism and blocking skills to play at an All-Pro level in the NFL.

27. Dallas Cowboys - Brandon Spikes, LB, Florida
The Cowboys are actually pretty well off at most positions, but potentially an eye for the future could be helpful. Bradie James and Keith Brooking, the Cowboys current inside linebackers, are 28 and 33 respectively. Brandon Spikes could take over for Brooking upon his retirement, and by the time Bradie James leaves via free agency or retires, Spikes will be in his prime.

28. New England Patriots - Eric Norwood, DE/OLB, South Carolina
The Patriots can afford to take the best player available at a position of need here, considering the practically heinous plethora of 2nd and 3rd round draft picks they have. Eric Norwood has cooled off since his early season play where he looked like the top rush linebacker, but that doesn’t stop him from going in the 1st round. He’ll help this now stagnant Patriots pass-rush.

29. San Diego Chargers - Jahvid Best, RB, California
LT has looked a bit lost on the field at times, and I think his time as the premier back in the NFL is over. Darren Sproles is also a threat to leave, being a free agent. Therefore, they take Jahvid Best, a running back with game-breaking speed and enough power to be a feature back in the NFL.

30. Minnesota Vikings - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
The Vikings have no worries, except for maybe quarterback and defensive end. If they lose Brett Favre to retirement, they could probably wait three weeks and get him back. If they lose Ray Edwards to free agency, they can draft Carlos Dunlap, a physical freak from Dunlap. Dunlap is extremely overrated; he’s lazy, takes plays off and doesn’t play up to his massive potential. However, I didn’t think Percy Harvin would do anything with the Vikings, and they proved me wrong then. Maybe they can strike gold with another young Gator.

31. Indianapolis Colts - Daryl Washington, LB, TCU
The Colts have so many offensive weapons it’s not even funny. Unless a decent offensive tackle is available at the tail end of the first round, then this pick will be used on a defensive player. Middle linebacker Gary Brackett is a free agent and might choose to depart, in which case Daryl Washington, the smart and surefire tackler can step in and perform for the Colts.

32. New Orleans Saints - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri
The Saints are a truly complete team in the NFL. They have an elite passing offense, a great run defense, and a great defense. Some have concerns with the defense the past few weeks, but the loss of starting defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis can’t be overlooked. He should be back soon. The only position they might want to try and improve is outside linebacker, which tackling machine Sean Weatherspoon can do. He’s one of the safest prospects in the draft. You know what you’ll get with Sean.

Yeah, I Know It's Only Week Three: My First 2010 Mock NFL Draft

Yeah, it's early. I get it. But it's always fun to look ahead. Now, the results don't accurately show where the teams will be this season, so the order is based on a fusion of standings and my own opinion.

As far as big name players I don't have declaring, I see Florida's defensive end Carlos Dunlap, offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga from Iowa, UCLA's defensive tackle Brian Price, Oklahoma's linebacker Travis Lewis, and Georgia safety Reshad Jones all staying in school.
Begin Slideshow

Chicago Bears Preview Week 4: Lions (1-2) @ Bears (2-1)

Have you ever seen two teams infused with more confidence facing off in a divisional battle then these two? The Chicago Bears are coming off of consecutive wins, but the two wins were against the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks on their own turf. The Lions are also coming off of a win. Yes those infamous 0-16 Lions!

Both teams will be fighting tough in this game, and they have no reason not to. With a win, the Bears could solidify themselves as real competitors in the NFC North. The Lions win, and they follow the path of last year's Miami Dolphins; starting 0-2 but grabbing a string of wins following.

The Bears offense has had a flip-flop of sorts. Last year, the offense ran through rookie running back Matt Forte. This year, newly acquired quarterback Jay Cutler has played excellently. Much was made over his 4 interception outing at Lambeau Field in Week 1, however many analysts failed to point out that Jay Cutler took over that game in the second half. For the past 10 quarters Jay has played like a Pro Bowl quarterback.

However, Matt Forte seems to be going through a sophomore slump, as his 66 yard outing against the struggling and injury ridden Seahawks defense was his best of the year. Much needs to be made of that game, because for the first time this season it seemed that Lovie Smith and Ron Turner were committed to getting Forte involved in the offense.

As long as the Bears get up by a touchdown or two, they should be able to pound the ball down Detroit's throat. Detroit went up early on both the Vikings and the Redskins, meaning both teams had to abandon the run to reclaim the lead. The Vikings as a result only got to give the ball to Adrian Peterson 15 times, however he averaged 6.1 yards per carry as he ran over the Lions defense upon Minnesota getting ahead.

When the Lions got down by a large amount against the Saints in Week 1, Saints RB Mike Bell came out of nowhere to run for nearly 150 yards. The formula to run on the Lions? Score early.

The Detroit Lions offense is the team's strongest point; after a horrendous start to the season, rookie quarterback and number one overall pick Matthew Stafford has become much more conservative with the ball, throwing two touchdowns and two interceptions since his three-pick opening performance.

Stafford has been given some weapons to work with as well, namely physical freak Calvin Johnson, former number two overall pick out of Georgia Tech. Johnson has 13 receptions for 190 yards and a touchdown so far this season and has shown he has connected with Stafford and has earned Stafford's trust.

However, the Lions will be awaiting injury news on two key players on both sides of the ball; second year running back Kevin Smith and linebacker Ernie Sims. Smith ran for over 100 yards against the Redskins before coming out in the third quarter because of a shoulder injury.

It is unknown how serious the injury is, but the Lions do have veteran Maurice Morris ready to step in if Smith is out. However, losing Kevin Smith would deeply hinder the Lions offense.

Linebacker Ernie Sims might return for this game, however his shoulder injury was said to make him miss a decent chunk of time. So, already having missed the Lions win over the Redskins last week, Sims is unlikely to return, although I wouldn't count him completely out just yet.

Prediction: Bears 31 Lions 17

The Lions have enough firepower on offense to put up some points, though, the Bears offense can as well. The Bears are playing at home after a tough road win over the Seahawks and should be full of confidence. There's no worries about looking ahead to a difficult opponent, as the Bears go on a bye the next week. To be quite honest, there's no reason the Bears should lose this game.

Chicago Bears Preview Week Three: Bears (1-1) at Seahawks (1-1)

Two 1-1 teams clash at Qwest Field. Chasing 2-0 teams in their division (Minnesota and San Francisco) and tied with 1-1 opponents (Green Bay and Arizona), this matchup could be a very telling game for these two teams and how the rest of their season will end up.

Chicago didn't leave Soldier Field after upsetting Pittsburgh 17-14 without scares though; right end and the stalwart of the Bears defensive line, Alex Brown, sprained an ankle after notching two sacks and providing the pressure on Steeler's QB Ben Roethlisberger on his sole interception.

Brown was the Bears best defensive lineman last season, and has two sacks on the season providing pressure on opposing quarterbacks. However, coach Lovie Smith remains adamant that Brown should

However, injuries may be the breaking point for both teams. Star linebacker Brian Urlacher was obviously injured Week 1 for the Bears, but free agent acquisition Pisa Tinoisamoa was also injured against Green Bay and missed Sunday's game against Pittsburgh.

Brown was the Bears' best defensive lineman last season, and has two sacks on the season providing pressure on opposing quarterbacks. However, coach Lovie Smith remains adamant that Brown should be prepped for the Bears quest to Qwest. The Bears better hope he is, as the Seahawks offensive line hhas been ravaged by injuries this season.

Seahawk's fantastic left tackle Walter Jones has missed the first two weeks of the regular season so far, and his replacement in Sean Locklear also has an ankle injury.

If the Seahawks are starting former Dolphin and Texan, third-string offensive tackle Brandon Frye, then even a limping Alex Brown should be able to provide pressure. With all the injuries to the Seahawks line, it's no wonder that quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, one of the league's most underrated quarterbacks, suffered a fractured rib and might miss this week's upcoming game.

If Matt Hasselbeck does miss this game, the team will turn to backup Seneca Wallace. Last year the Seahawks went 3-5 under Wallace's hand last season when he started at quarterback, and will likely have similar struggles if Wallace starts again, although he does have more weapons this year.

The Seahawks defense is also facing injuries at the middle linebacker position, with star Lofa Tatupu facing a hamstring injury. With the Seahawks recently giving up over 200 yards to running back Frank Gore without Tatupu, running back Matt Forte, who's off to an extremely slow start, could break out of his shell and break 100 yards for the first time this season.

Conditional Prediction (Seahawks without Tatupu/Hasselbeck): Bears 21, Seahawks 17

Qwest Field is one of the loudest and toughest fields to play at, but the Seahawks without Matt Hasselbeck and Lofa Tatupu are a completely different group, meaning that a Bears team coming off a huge win over the Super Bowl champion Steelers should be able to take a win.

Conditional Prediction (Seahawks with Tatupu/Hasselbeck): Seahawks 23, Bears 20

Hasselbeck is the key to this team's success; whenever he's been out for the Seahawks in the past they've struggled. If both are playing, the Seahawks should play considerably better football on both sides of the ball, although it should still be close.

Chicago Bears' Predictions for 2009

It's May, true, but it's never too late to start making predictions! The Bears, now led by quarterback Jay Cutler, enter the season with high hopes. By the end of the season, Lovie Smith could either be a candidate for coach of the year or be out of town. Jerry Angelo's move for Cutler could be considered brilliant or a bomb. Let's take a trip in our time machine, and see how the season turns out....
Begin Slideshow

My Top 10 Seniors in the 2010 Draft

In recent memory, you have to think of 2004 and 2008 as very good draft classes. In 2004, Eli Manning, Larry Fitzgerald, Philip Rivers, Sean Taylor, Kellen Winslow, Roy Williams, DeAngelo Hall and Ben Roethlisberger all went in the Top 11. Following them were Johnathan Vilma, Tommie Harris, Vince Wilfork and Steven Jackson. An impressive first round already, but add in second-rounders Chris Snee and Bob Sanders, third rounders Chris Cooley and Darnell Dockett, fourth round picks Nathan Vasher and Jared Allen and fifth rounder Michael Turner, and that 2004 class could have set the basis for the NFL's future.

And the most recent 2008 draft, putting out excellent tackles like Jake Long, Ryan Clady and Duane Brown, running backs like Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, Felix Jones and Jonathan Stewart, the duo of Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan, and that's not even close to the extent of excellent players drafted.

Flash forward to next April; this could very well top both of those classes.

You've got big names like Tebow, Bradford and McCoy at quarterback. You've got an insanely deep defensive line class, with 15 potential first round prospects. But not all of these players are sure things. If they don't declare, they can screw up your draft boards!

So, here's a rundown of my Top 10 seniors in next years draft. Keep in mind this is my opinion, and I'd love to see your guys comments and opinions in the comments!
Begin Slideshow

Fight!: Chicago Bears' Training Camp Battles

At quite a few positions, the Chicago Bears have immense depth; at others....well, let's just hope that a few certain players don't fall prey to injuries! Here's a look at some of the training camp battles to keep your eye on when training camp kicks off.

1. Three Technique Defensive Tackle Backup

Recent third-round pick out of San Jose State Jarron Gilbert will be given a chance to compete with former third round pick Marcus Harrison. Harrison looked promising in his little time last season, amassing two sacks.

2. No. 2 and Slot Receiver

Third round compensatory pick Juaquin Iglesias and last years third-rounder Earl Bennett are the two most likely candidates for the starting job next to Devin Hester. Earl Bennett has also practiced as a slot receiver, so if he loses the job he could slide in there.

Earl Bennett left Vanderbilt as the SEC's all-time leader in receptions and has a rapport with another Vanderbilt alum on the Bears, quarterback Jay Cutler. Cutler came back to throw at Bennett's Pro Day last year.

Rashied Davis will be challenged not only by the aforementioned Bennett if Bennett loses the No. 2 job battle to Iglesias, but also rookie fifth-round pick Johnny Knox from Abilene Christian. The 5'11" speedster showed excellent speed and hands in the Bears recent training camp.

3. Tight End

Three immensely talented players in Desmond Clark, Greg Olsen, and Kellen Davis all reside at the tight end position. Desmond Clark has been a stalwart for the Bears and is a more than capable blocker and receiving threat.

Greg Olsen is a much better receiver who's still developing as a blocker. Kellen Davis, fifth round pick from Michigan State last year, showed promise in the preseason making some spectacular catches, but his blocking is still subpar and will need to improve if he wants to stay with the Bears as their third tight end, who Lovie Smith typically uses as a blocker.

4. No. 2 Cornerback

Across from Charles Tillman, Bears fans could see any of injury-prone Nathan Vasher, young Corey Graham or rookie D.J. Moore. There has been rumors of Graham moving to free safety, although nothing has been confirmed by Lovie Smith.

5. Free Safety

Probably the weakest position on the Bears entire roster, newly signed free agent Josh Bullocks, former fourth round pick out of Louisiana State Craig Steltz and kickoff returner Danieal Manning are all competing. Former fifth-round pick out of Nebraska Zack Bowman will also be making the move from cornerback to free safety.

Bowman showed excellent ball skills in his lone playing time during a Week Seven game against Minnesota. Bowman intercepted a pass to clinch a 48-41 win for the Bears.

6. Guard

A crowded battle, Dan Buenning, acquired last year for a sixth round pick from the Buccaneers, Josh Beekman, who showed immense improvement last year, Frank Omiyale, free agent signee from the Panthers, and Roberto Garza, a starter on this line for the past four years, all have a shot at the two guard positions.

Garza and Omiyale seem to be the favorites, with Beekman likely using his athleticism to work at backup center to eventually take over from Olin Kreutz.

7. Strongside Linebacker

Long-time fair haired child of the organization Hunter Hillenmeyer was thrust from his starting position for former Northwestern Wildcat Nick Roach midway through the season. Both will be competing with

8. Nose tackle

Injury prone Dusty Dvoracek was drafted to replace Tank Johnson at nose tackle but so far has been unable to stay healthy and has not been impressive in his time at the position.

The 2007 free agent signing period brought former San Francisco 49ers Anthony Adams to the Bears, and he's been very impressive in his time at defensive tackle in Chicago. Although he has the size to do it, we're unsure if he can make the transition to defensive tackle.

Minnesota Vikings: Old No. 17 Controversy

One, 9, 13, 17.

What do all these numbers have in common?

These four numbers are the only eligible numbers for a QB to wear that are currently available in Minnesota.

Notice the absence of No. 4.

If Brett Favre does in fact sign with the Minnesota Vikings this season, he has two choices: buy the No. 4 off of second year quarterback John David Booty, or pull a Montana and wear a different number than the one he is so frequently associated with.

Yes, it would be weird to watch Favre, whose No. 4 is as easily recognized as a Chimchar at ComicCon, to wear one of those four numbers (ironic, how four numbers are available, isn't it!). But we'll get used to it, just like we've gotten used to seeing Brett Favre make his return every summer.

Montana's change from 16 to 19 was difficult, and Favre's change from 4 to one, nine, 13, or 17 could be just as difficult to swallow. But in the end, it's all kind of pointless. Favre will more than likely buy the number from Booty. But that'll just have to be a different episode in "As the Brett Turns...."

Jay Cutler's Diary Found; Revealing Words Inside

Jay Cutler's diary was seized Tuesday, Adam Schefter reports. Inside were countless reports of Fall Out Boy concerts and writing songs. Here's an excerpt of some of the disturbing facts found inside...

"Dear Diary...

That Josh McPoopiels is such a meanie-face! Jeez! I mean, I'm Jay Cutler. JAY FREAKIN' CUTLER!

Why would you try and trade me! I have worked my butt off. Plus, I have diabetes, just thought I'd throw that in there.

That guy on ESPN said that I'd go to Detroit or Tampa Bay. Ew. Talk about loser cooties. Both teams suck! I have diabetes! I should play for a winner!

Detroit is my nightmare. Can someone say "0-16"? I'd never win again there. But what's even worse is the talk about Cleveland! That Eric Mangini guys a rat. I would never wanna play for him.

Eh, but I guess I can deal with it. I mean, all Josh McPoopHead did was betray me, talk about me behind my back, I have diabetes, try and trade me and then openly deny it. Oh, by the way, I have diabetes.

There's no way I'm ever playing for this guy again. He's a meanie-face and if (insert new team here) ever plays him again I'm going to beat him into a pulp!

Speaking of pulp, I had waffles this morning. On the side? Orange juice. Orange juice has pulp. I saw Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boydrinking orange juice once. Then I started. I wanna be just like Pete Wentz when I grow up.

He's my idol. I love Fall Out Boy's music. The lyrics really hit home, y'know? Wait, my phone's ringing.... Ugh, it's that jerk Josh McDaniels. I guess I'll talk to you later.

Love,

Jay-Jay.

P.S.; I have diabetes."

Adam Schefter reports Josh McDaniels took great pain from the "McPoopHead" comments and will scold Cutler at the teams next meeting.

Wait, What? An Interesting, Alternative Mock Draft

I love doing mocks like these, when essentially, you're going upstream in a downstream river. My goal with this mock draft was to make it look like nothing else.

Sure, you'll see Eugene Monroe going first overall and Brian Orakpo going third in many mocks, but in how many other mocks will you see Michael Crabtree going fifth?

1) Detroit Lions - Eugene Monroe, T from Virginia

Eugene Monroe is the most NFL-ready tackle in the draft. Jason Smith may have the most upside, but the Lions need to win now; Eugene Monroe can step in and play at a high level Day One.

2) St. Louis Rams - Matthew Stafford, QB from Georgia

The Rams take a different approach: not a tackle, but Stafford. Stafford gives them a big arm to stretch the field and gives them another piece to a young, explosive offense.

3) Kansas City Chiefs - Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB from Texas

The Chiefs only had 10 sacks the entire season; Orakpo had 11. Orakpo probably won’t get 11 sacks, but he’ll bring a great pass rush with Vrabel.

4) Seattle Seahawks - B.J. Raji, DT from Boston College

The Seahawks just got Redding from the Lions through trade. Pairing Redding with Raji at nose tackle gives the Seahawks a fierce defensive line.

5) Cleveland Browns - Michael Crabtree, WR from Texas Tech

Braylon Edwards had one good year before he returned to his drop-happy self. This pick allows the Browns to shop Edwards and possibly get another second or first round pick.

6) Cincinnati Bengals - Aaron Curry, LB from Wake Forest

The Bengals just drafted Keith Rivers last year, and had he not been injured he would have been Defensive Rookie of the Year. The Bengals grab another young linebacker who can pair with Rivers for years to come.

Curry can either play the other outside linebacker spot or try his luck replacing Dhani Jones in the middle.

By the way, have you seen Dhani Jones' new TV show? No? Well, you're not the only one. That shows does not look appealing at all.

7) Oakland Raiders - Jeremy Maclin, WR from Missouri

The Raide-, scratch that. Al Davis loves speed. Jamarcus Russel can now use his enormous arm.

8) Jacksonville Jaguars - Vontae Davis, CB from Illinois

The Jaguars recently cut Drayton Florence and now have no real corner to pair with Rashean Mathis. Davis gives them the best pure corner in the draft.

9) Green Bay Packers - Jason Smith, T from Baylor

With most of the top 3-4 defenders off the board, the Packers look to add youth to their offensive line with Baylor’s Jason Smith. Chad Clifton gave up 7.5 sacks and is coming off of knee surgery; adding a young tackle will protect Aaron Rodgers for years to come.

10) San Francisco 49ers - Michael Oher, T from Ole Miss

This pick fits the 49ers perfectly. Oher has no character issues whatsoever. He’s a high effort guy, which will fit Singletary well. He can play either left or right tackle, allowing them to be flexible with Barry Sims.

11) Buffalo Bills - Everette Brown, DE/OLB from Florida State

The Bills need a pass rush, and putting Everette Brown on that defense gives them lots of options. He can line up at weak side linebacker or at defensive end.

12) Denver Broncos - Mark Sanchez, QB from USC

This whole Jay Cutler fiasco is getting out of control. It’s coming to the point where either he’ll be cut or traded. Mark Sanchez gives them a quarterback to replace him.

13) Washington Redskins - Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB from Penn State

The Redskins need help on their lines, whether it be offensive or defensive. Maybin can do to the Skins what Brown can do for the Bills. Maybin is undersized but can take advantage of Haynesworth’s double teams.

14) New Orleans Saints - Malcolm Jenkins, S from Ohio State

The Saints need a cornerstone safety. Enter Malcolm Jenkins. He’ll get a chance at corner, but more then likely his speed issues and bad hips should move him to safety.

15) Houston Texans - Brian Cushing, LB from USC

The Texans have a great offense, but they need a few pieces on defense. Secondary is an option, but both Jenkins and Davis are gone, so they grab a physical specimen in Cushing to play one of the outside linebacker positions.

16) San Diego Chargers - Rey Maualuga, LB from USC

Maualuga gives the Chargers a huge improvement at inside linebacker. Maualuga reminds me of Patrick Willis, except that Maualuga is a born leader; he will pump up every member of this defense. He’ll work well with Ron Rivera.

17) New York Jets - Percy Harvin, WR from Florida

The Jets need more firepower on offense. Percy Harvin can line up at wideout, running back, or they can use him in the Wildcat offense.

18) Chicago Bears - Eben Britton, T from Arizona

John Tait just recently retired and the Bears are having trouble resigning John St. Clair, who was expected to be the starter next year. Putting Britton at right tackle solidifies the offensive line for years with Williams, Beekman, and Britton.

19) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Peria Jerry, DT from Ole Miss

Jovan Haye is gone, and he wasn’t too successful last year anyway. Peria Jerry is an explosive defensive tackle who reminds me of Tommie Harris with his pass-rush skills.

20) Detroit Lions - Josh Freeman, QB from Kansas State

The Lions get their left tackle first, and now they grab their quarterback. Freeman has a great arm and will be surrounded by a decent offensive line, an elite wide receiver, and an up-and-coming running back.

21) Philadelphia Eagles - William Beatty, T from Connecticut

Beatty is your classic left tackle. He can step in and replace Tra Thomas for years to come.

22) Minnesota Vikings - Andre Smith, T from Alabama

The Vikings need a right tackle, and Andre Smith is a great right tackle. The Vikings may back off due to character issues, but a guy who had top five potential a few months ago is great value at 22.

23) New England Patriots - William Moore, S from Missouri

A reach, yes, but the Patriots need a strong safety, possibly more than any other position. Moore will be the heir apparent to Rodney Harrison, whose injury last year may unfortunately cause him to retire.

24) Atlanta Falcons - Alex Mack, C from California

The Falcons are kinda stuck here; there’s no one who really fits their biggest needs that wouldn’t be a reach. So they go with the best center prospect in years. Todd McClure is 32, and Brett Romberg and Ben Wilkerson are not the future answer.

25) Miami Dolphins - Alphonso Smith, CB from Wake Forest

Alphonso Smith is only 5’9", but throw that out the window. He’s reminds me a lot of a player who would be a seventh-rounder yet stand out in the NFL; not a great physical specimen, but he is a great football player. He has great instincts and has picked off loads of passes in his time at Wake Forest.

26) Baltimore Ravens - Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR from Maryland

Local boy Darrius Heyward-Bey has all the physical tools to be a fantastic No. 1 receiver, and his speed will definitely intrigue the Ravens, who can have Flacco bomb it to him all day.

27) Indianapolis Colts - Evander Hood, DT from Missouri

A bit of a reach, but Evander Hood brings that big, run-stuffing body that the Colts need. Their run defense will improve a heck of a lot with Ziggy in the middle.

28) Philadelphia Eagles - Chris Wells, RB from Ohio State

Chris Wells is a steal here at 28. Wells will fit well with the Eagles because he can be the short-yardage back and will play a LenDale White role, whereas Westbrook would be the Chris Johnson in this situation.

29) New York Giants - Kenny Britt, WR from Rutgers

The Giants need a big wide receiver to replace Plaxico Burress. Britt is an extremely underrated wide receiver who stands at 6’4". He can very easily replace Plax as Eli’s No. 1 target.

30) Tennessee Titans - D.J. Moore, CB from Vanderbilt

Local boy D.J. Moore reminds me a bit of Alphonso Smith, except he hasn’t made so many plays. Still, Nick Harper is 35 and the Titans have lost three corners in free agency. Moore makes sense.

31) Arizona Cardinals - Brandon Pettigrew, TE from Oklahoma State

Pettigrew falls to Arizona, and they can’t resist. Yes, Moreno is on the board, but when Leonard Pope, Ben Patrick, and Leonard Nimoy are your tight ends, you need help.

32) Pittsburgh Steelers - Tyson Jackson, DE from LSU

Jackson falls further than Brady Quinn. Adding Jackson to the Steelers' defensive line infuses youth, and Jackson is a perfect fit for the Steelers' 3-4 scheme.

Warner and Sanchez Equal Short, Long Term Success for 49ers

Author's Note: This article was written before the Cardinals resigned Kurt Warner to a two-year deal.

I'll admit it; I've always been extremely critical of Mark Sanchez. Sure, he has all the physical tools, but when you've only started 16 games in your entire career, it brings to mind another Pac-10 quarterback drafted highly; Akili Smith.

Smith threw 32 touchdown passes during his senior season at Oregon, causing his stock to skyrocket. So much so that he was drafted third overall by the Cincinnati Bengals.

He only started 11 games in the college ranks.

Four years later, he's cut from Packers training camp. Another four years, and he can't even make it in the CFL.

Yeah, life pretty much sucks when you're a CFL outcast.

Now, you may be saying, "Matt Cassel never started a college game, yet he still leads the Patriots to an 11-5 record!". I hope you do say that, because that ties this entire article together.

Kurt Warner has had recent meetings with the 49ers, and it's seeming more and more likely by the day that Warner will play for his third NFC West team. It's pretty safe to say that Warner won't play more than two more NFL seasons, so the team that signs him will still have to plan for the future.

Matt Cassel never started a college game, true, but he studied the same system for four seasons under one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, Tom Brady. He had loads of time to get comfortable with the speed of the NFL and the playbook. Warner could be to Sanchez what Brady was to Cassel.

If you let Warner handle the reins for two years while all the while allowing Sanchez to learn from Warner, familiarize himself with the playbook and see spot duty here or there [in garbage time, in the preseason, etc.], then you can have both success with a proven quarterback now, and a young, promising quarterback later.

Drafting Mark Sanchez at No. 10 overall in this year's upcoming NFL Draft and signing Warner means both short and long term success for the 49ers. Will they choose to take this route?

Only time will tell.

It's a Sad Day When Your Two Super Bowl Teams Pick Top 10

That picture was what I thought Tampa would witness on Feb. 1; the class of the NFC and AFC. The Seattle Seahawks, the perennial NFC West champs take Mike Holmgren to the Super Bowl in his final year.

And then, the upstart Jaguars, led by the fearsome rushing attack of Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor, make their first ever trip to a Super Bowl. Neither team had ever won a Super Bowl, but that would change for one team...

Until neither got more than five wins.

If there are any greater disappointments in their respective conferences than these two teams, can someone show them to me? The only teams to come close would be the Browns or Cowboys.

What can these teams do to return to championship form? Well, lucky for them, they have top 10 picks to fix it; the Seahawks with the fourth pick and the Jaguars with the eighth. Let's first look at the Seahawks.

The Seahawks were ravaged by injuries; they had to sign the grocery store boy to play wide receiver! Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was out for the majority of the season and their offensive line was much maligned through the season.

The obvious pick is Michael Crabtree [WR from Texas Tech], the consensus No. 1 wide receiver prospect in this year's draft. The Seahawks will get guys back next year, but for how much longer? Most of their receiving corps are 30 years old.

If there are any other options for the Seahawks, it'd be offensive tackle or running back. Walter Jones has been injury-prone and is nearing the end of his possible Hall of Fame career. With a very top-heavy group of tackles like Alabama's Andre Smith and Virginia's Eugene Monroe, if Crabtree is off the board the Seahawks will likely go for one of the big guys to protect Hasselbeck.

Running back is an interesting option. Julius Jones is 27, nearing the age of the dreaded downfall of running backs; 30. With elite prospects Chris Wells and Knowshon Moreno falling due to lack of need, why not grab one of them? Chris Wells is a big back with fantastic speed, especially for a 6'1", 230-pound back.

Moreno is a little more well rounded; he can catch the ball out of the backfield and is a little faster than Wells. Also, he's smaller, allowing him to get lost behind offensive lineman and has less durability issues.

Now for the Jaguars...Man, this team was loaded with talent. Quarterback David Garrard came off a fantastic season and the rushing duo of Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor would blow the doors off defenses. What happened? Offensive implosion, that's what happened.

First of all, the offensive line was ravaged by injuries. For a team that relies on running the football, having to rely on your sixth-string guards [that is an exaggeration] to block for you is not a good sign.

Also, their offensive tackles were injury prone. David Garrard was sacked 42 times, double how many sacks he received the year before. His interception total skyrocketed from three in 2007 to 13 in 2008.

Not to mention, Garrard was throwing to scrubs like crack-addicted Matt Jones, Top 10 busts Troy Williamson and Reggie Williams, and return man Dennis Northcutt.

The key will be giving David Garrard weapons on offense. Obviously, if Crabtree makes it past St. Louis, Seattle, Cincinnati and Oakland, the Jaguars snatch him up, simple as that.

The safer and more likely pick, though, would be Michael Oher (OT from Ole Miss). Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio coached the South team during the Senior Bowl earlier this year. Michael Oher started at left tackle for the South team, and reports indicate he was a fan of Oher.

In my previous articles, I had Cincinnati grabbing Eugene Monroe ad Oakland grabbing Jason Smith, leaving Michael Oher as the last remaining of the Big Four tackles. Oher protects Garrad's blind side and allow Garrard to actually survive and reduce his interception rate back to three.

Our preseason predictions typically are incorrect. At least I can say injuries ruined mine.

Commitment To...Well...Anything But Winning!

Ahh...The Raiders. For a draft junkie like me, I love the Raiders, because the player who has top 10 talent with the best 40 time is always Al Davis' pick.

JaMarcus Russell had great measurables and a nice 40 time for a QB. Darren McFadden? Who cares if our running game is our best feature, draft him!

Unfortunately for us draftniks, however, Tom Cable is the complete opposite. A former offensive guard at the University of Idaho, Tom Cable served as head coach there from 2000 to 2003.

Afterwards, he spent time with the Falcons as their offensive line coach before moving on to the Raiders. He spent one year in Oakland before moving up to their head coach position, which he currently serves.

The issue with all this is simple; Tom Cable believes in hard-nosed, smashmouth football. Al Davis believes in 40 times. Unless there's an offensive tackle out there that runs a 4.4 40 yard dash, there's bound to be controversy in the war room.

Of the Big Four offensive tackles [Andre Smith, Jason Smith, Michael Oher, Eugene Monroe], Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe are the most athletic, the former being a converted tight end.

When you look at the top of the draft, numerous teams, including the Lions, Rams, Seahawks and Bengals, could be on the hunt for a lockdown tackle.

The Lions may very well take an offensive tackle No. 1 overall, but that pick is becoming more and more likely to be Matthew Stafford. The Rams seem to be almost guaranteed an offensive tackle; they've been trying to address the trenches for years.

Although the option of Michael Crabtree enters the picture, I'm going to say that Andre Smith from Alabama goes here, mainly because of his versatility; he can play either guard positions and either tackle positions.

If Michael Crabtree does in fact go to the Rams, then the Seahawks take an offensive tackle; simple as that. So more than likely, Andre Smith will be off the board by pick No. 5.

Then comes the Bengals at No. 6; a very tough choice. It's essentially a matter of Oher, Smith, or Monroe; which to choose! Oher is similar to Smith in the fact that he can play both tackle positions. Smith and Monroe are both athletic.

Even before the season began, when I was considering either Oher or Monroe to go to the Falcons at #1 [hey, it looked like the Falcons were going to be horrible!], I had an opinion on who to take. Oher was the raw talent, the guy that would be better down the line. But for the No. 1 pick, you want a guy who can step in and make an impact, which was what the more polished Monroe could do.

Although that was seven months ago, I still believe those same basic ideas to be true, which is why I think the Bengals grab the natural left tackle, Eugene Monroe. Then, at No. 7, the Oakland Raiders war room explodes in chatter. Whom to take?

In my opinion, this pick could come down to Jason Smith, Michael Oher and Jeremy Maclin [WR from Missouri]. Maclin follows the old Al Davis adage; 4.33 speed = Oakland Raider speed! P

lus, JaMarcus Russel needs a reliable target, especially one he can hit down the field with his big arm.

But then there's what Tom Cable brings to the table; old-fashioned football. Running the ball, playing good defense.

The Raiders defense isn't completely horrible, especially their cornerbacks [even without Nnamdi Asomugha, Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt proved this season that they can play with the best of them].

The best offensive tackle of the two? Oher, in my opinion. Plus, if they feel well about Mario Henderson, their young offensive tackle who played extremely well in his time at the end of the season, then Oher can come in and play right tackle extremely well. The best of both worlds? Jason Smith.

The Baylor prospect, as previously mentioned, was a former tight end whose stock has risen like no one elses through his senior season.

At 6-foot-5, 310 pounds he's a big player, but also runs a 5.1 40 time. Eventually, I think Jason Smith will be the pick, but never put anything past Al Davis.

I just hope he doesn't decide to draft Knowshon Moreno.

The Road To Super Bowl XLV: Part 1: Wild-Card Saturday

For my Super Bowl article, I decided to go in a different direction...the future. This will begin my series leading up to Super Bowl XLV. I’m not going to be writing this article, I’m going to have fictional sportswriter Al “Gap-Tooth” Maddensworthshaw explain the playoff picture in the 2010 season. But first, lets lay down some back story...

It’s 2011, and the season’s wrapping up. Sportscaster Al “Gap-Tooth” Maddensworthshaw, created when Al Michaels, Michael Strahan, John Madden, Cris Collinsworth and Terry Bradshaw suddenly came down with mad cow disease, is here to give you the low-down on the NFC and AFC championship games, and who he thinks has the best chance to make the Lombardi Trophy their own.

“Well, we’ve seen a great postseason so far. It started off with wild-card weekend as it always does. I know I was sitting at home, drinking some booze and eating turducken when I realized, oh man! I’m supposed to be calling this game!

So, I used my old wide receiver skills to run over to the studio in two seconds flat, and sat down to watch the AFC East champion Toronto Canadians take on the No. 5 seed wildcard, the Kansas City Chiefs. I had watched the Canadians back when they were the Bills, and I was excited to see them back in the playoffs with new head coach Mike Shanahan.

If there was any controversial game, it was this one. Ed Hochuli’s call in 2008 had become history, but his latest guffaw, also in a game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos during Week 17, was even bigger. Quarterback Philip Rivers roundhouse kicked Jay Cutler, but when Jay Cutler asked Rivers to politely stop, Rivers fell on the ground crying.

Not knowing what had happened, Ed Hochuli threw a personal foul flag on Cutler, which gave the ball to Los Angeles on the one yard line. They easily scored by running Knowshon Moreno straight up the gut. Of course, the Broncos were up 135-7 at that point, so it wasn’t as big of an issue.

But, let's get back to the game. The Canadians were leading 24-23, but the Chiefs and Mark Sanchez were driving down the field. They had made it to the one yard line with .01 seconds left on the clock. So, the Chiefs put the ball in the hands of Brandon Jacobs, but he was thrown backwards 16 yards by Marcus Stroud. But Ed Hochuli was too busy looking at his abs, and had to take the Chiefs word for it that they scored. A 29-24 victory put the Chiefs into the divisional playoffs.

The late game on was the No. 6 seed wildcard Green Bay Packers and the No. 3 seed NFC South champions the Atlanta Falcons. The Packers were led by Aaron Rodgers and the running game of Derrick Ward.

The Falcons, on the other hand, were making their third straight playoff appearance. After losing to the Cardinals and Vikings in the first round the past two years, Matt Ryan wanted a taste of the glory. He went out and tossed for 450 yards, a pretty average day in most quarterbacks books. But when he threw for 11 touchdowns, people started looking. The previous record, 10.5, was set by Kyle Orton when he played the Lions the previous year, was eclipsed. Add on three Michael Turner rushing touchdowns, and the Falcons moved on to play the No. 2 seeded Washington D.C. Presidents, building momentum with a 98-1 victory.

The Packers had scored a free throw on the Falcons, but the Falcons' stifling defense, led by cornerback Nnamdi Aosmugha, shut down the Packers' offense. That wrapped up Saturday‘s games. They were pretty good, I guess, but Sunday‘s were even better……..

Hold on, lemme grab a beer and I’ll tell you about the Ravens/Steelers game and the Vikings/49ers game!”

Well, as Al "Gap-Tooth" Maddensworthshaw grabs a beer and a Brett Favre-shaped cake, I'm going to have to interrupt and end Part 1 here. Thanks for reading, and I'm gonna go grab another tape-recorder so we all can read more about the exciting road to Super Bowl XLV!

The Michael Vick Experiement

AUTHORS NOTE: I do not mean to support anything Michael Vick did off the field. I do not agree with any of his decisions and he deserved every bit of punishment he received. This article is to focus on Michael Vick’s on-the-field play, not his off-the-field antics.

No, that’s not the newest band to hit the radio stations, that’s what will take place with whoever takes the risk on signing Michael Vick.

My inspiration for writing this article was the rumor around the league that, due to numerous connections to Vick inside the franchise, Michael Vick could be headed to the San Francisco 49ers.

Personally, I doubt Mike Singletary is going to take the risk on such a player. But what other teams could take a risk on Michael Vick?

Miami Dolphins

The 2008 NFL Season can be described by many terms. Injuries to big players and turnarounds are definitely worthy descriptors. I would describe it with the terms “Trick plays”.

Whether it was the uprising of the Wildcat, the Cardinals flea-flickers on their way to the Super Bowl or many others, the NFL gave us reason to hold our breath on every play.

The Dolphins were at the forefront of the Wildcat renaissance. While using it for the first time in Week Three, the Dolphins ran over the New England Patriots 38-13, one season after the Dolphins went 1-15 and the Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season.

With a player that is a threat to run and pass like Michael Vick can, you have a multitude of different options to run the Wildcat.

Detroit Lions

You go 0-16. You have a historically bad franchise. You need a franchise quarterback. You need to sell tickets. Adding Vick to the Detroit Lions would give fans a reason to come; Watch the exciting exploits of Michael Vick! He gives them some offensive stability; Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith and Vick.

Oakland Raiders

Al Davis has been quoted as saying “I draft on 40 times”. Well, not really, but it’s becoming quite the well known fact that Davis doesn’t care if said player makes the team better or not, as long as they’re fast he likes them.

JaMarcus Russel is progressing swiftly towards bust status. He’s not as bad as Ryan Leaf, but he is extremely inconsistent. If he does end up getting cut, Vick would likely come to the Raiders. I mean, really, who else would love to see The Cable Guy, Undead Al, and Starscream, all on one dysfunctional team!

A Tale of Three USC Quarterbacks

Say you're a quarterback given the chance to be the 10th overall pick in the draft. You're paid $6.75 million for six years, and that's not even mentioning how much bonus guaranteed money you receive. You're able to step in, learn a bit from a great veteran quarterback, and then step in when you're ready.

But what is this? You have a little too much fun partying. You're benched in favor of that crazy old guy who has taken what was supposed to be your team to the playoffs and is in the MVP mix.

Let's spin this around a bit now: You're put into a situation where you are the top quarterback prospect in your class. The team drafting first overall is hankering for a face to their franchise. You head into the organization and sign on for seven years and $49 million.

You start off great, putting up fantastic numbers with a potent receiving duo. But soon, you're out for a few weeks with an injury. After you recover, you still get shoved to the wayside, even though you think you can play.

All the while, your team can't compile more than five wins and becomes the first team, along with the Philadelphia Eagles, to tie since 2002.

One last scenario. You backup both the aforementioned quarterbacks. You're even roommates with the latter and Troy Polamalu. But despite the success those two found, you never did so.

You were lucky to be drafted, and even so, that didn't happen until 230th overall. You wait three years for a chance, and even then, it comes at the price of your mentor, the greatest quarterback of all time, in many opinions.

You come into your first game and lead your team to a win. And another. And another. And another! Soon enough, you're slinging the ball better than Brett Favre, scrambling better than Vince Young, and winning more than Tom Brady.

All right, these may be stretches, but without a doubt you're finding success. And now, it's become a pick between you or your injured counterpart.

If you're aren't the pick, you aren't worried. You've moved up to be a valued free agent that could help countless different teams. In a year where the draft doesn't carry many franchise quarterbacks, you've become even more valued. You waited your turn and now you've found success.

For those of you who could not tell, those little blurbs were on Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, and Matt Cassel respectively. Now the choice is up to you. What would you choose? Matt Leinart seemed to have it made, but now his backup, Matt Cassel, is starting whereas he is not. Neither is 2001 Heisman recipient Carson Palmer.

It just goes to show you, it doesn't whether you're the first, 10th, or the 230th pick, as long as you're a good football player, there'll always be a place for you in the NFL.

Romeo, Romeo, Wherefore Art Thou Romeo Crennel?

Well, it's safe to assume that Cleveland Browns' head coach Romeo Crennel won't be in Cleveland. After a 10-6 record in 2007, his current 4-11 record, combined with 6-10 and 4-12 records in his first two seasons, have put his job in jeopardy. This is a team that was favored to make the playoffs; now, it's in a rebuilding phase. What can be done?

Step 1: Revisit the Past

Marty Schottenheimer coached the Browns from 1984 to 1988, amassing a 44-27 record. A young linebacker named Bill Cowher played for the Browns two years before the Schottenheimer era. Both are familiar with the Browns and the division, especially Cowher, who coached AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers to a world championship in 2005. Cowher would have an advantage over Crennel, who has never defeated the Steelers in his four seasons as head coach.

Both Cowher and Schottenheimer should be considered front runners to replace Romeo Crennel. Crennel is a very passive coach that does not take risks. With very little time left on the clock and down by a touchdown to the Pittsburgh Steelers, he opted for a field goal

Step 2: Draft from Home

Three Ohio State players, the halfback Chris "Beanie" Wells, outside linebacker Marcus Freeman, and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, are eligible for the draft. All would fill holes the Browns needed. The Browns are a guaranteed top 10 draft pick, meaning that both Wells and Jenkins should be available wherever they pick, which is somewhere from six to 10.

Malcolm Jenkins could help fix their faulty pass defense, but Jamal Lewis is a shell of his former self and Wells is a well-rounded runner, who has speed and the strength to be the featured back. Freeman is projected somewhere around the second to third round, and is a well-rounded linebacker who can both get to the quarterback, something the Browns have had trouble doing this season, and can stop the run.

Step 3: Don't Hold Grudges

Alright, that subheading was kind of reaching for something clever, but it's mainly referring to Terrell Suggs, the free agent defensive end from divisional rival Baltimore. He is a free agent I believe they should sign. But, there are plenty of other free agents who could fix the issues.

Both Derrick Ward and Brandon Jacobs, two New York Giants running backs, are free agents and could come in and make a difference. San Diego speedster Darren Sproles could come in and compliment any rookie they might draft. Julius Peppers and Terrell Suggs are two elite pass-rushing prospects.

Albert Haynesworth is also a free agent, but the Browns have already found their powerful, 3-4 nose tackle in Shaun Rogers. If a new coach wants to implement a 4-3, however, Haynesworth and Rogers would be a fantastic duo up the middle and would, without a doubt, top the Williams Wall in Minnesota.

Step 4: Change Your Health Care

Countless Browns have been contracted with a staph infection over the past few years. Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Ken Dorsey, and Bruce Gradkowski will all have started at least one game for Cleveland at season's end. 13 Browns are currently on Injured Reserve. See a trend?

This is a franchise in disarray, but we said the same things about the Dolphins, who fell from 6-10 to 1-15, but have risen up to 10-5. Remember the 7-9 Falcons that fell to 4-12? Yeah, they're 10-5 right now also. Who knows? Maybe next year, we'll be talking about the Browns just the same way.

The Detroit Lions Are Officially On The Clock

Fourteen losses in 2008 were not enough to clinch the #1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Luckily for the wayward Detroit Lions, fifteen are.

Now 0-15 after another blowout loss at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, Detroit can officially begin to decide on their guy; their savior.

Luckily for the Detroit Kitte- I mean, Detroit Lions, they have a plethora of needs and a plethora of picks. After exiting the war-room last year, the Chiefs had used their heinous amount of picks to have what seemed like one of the best drafts in 2008.

The Lions have the #1 pick and a later pick in the first round from the Dallas Cowboys, along with the 33rd and 65th picks, and even the Cowboy's third round pick, giving the Lions a lot of chances to find playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Matthew Stafford is becoming the "sexy" pick for the Lions to draft #1 overall. Frankly, I agree. Stafford plays in a pro-style offense at Georgia, allowing him to make an easy transition to the NFL.

Need proof? Matt Ryan, the former #3 overall pick, now starting for the Atlanta Falcons. Is that enough said? If not, then factor in his fantastic arm, something that will excite the Lions, who already have their big wide receiver in Calvin Johnson.

But after that pick is where ____ (whoever Detroit selects to be their general manager) will make his money. The Cowboy's pick will either go to fill needs on the offensive line or on defense. Offensive tackles Jason Smith from Baylor or Cirok Black of LSU should be available there.

The Lions would be taking the same path that the Falcons did, drafting Matt Ryan with their first pick and then drafting their big guy to protect him in Sam Baker. This strategy works because when you draft your franchise quarterback, most of the time the busts are put into a position with a crappy offensive line. When you grab a franchise left tackle to protect him, he has a much higher chance for survival and success.

But the Lions may want to take a defensive player and test that one of those offensive linemen fall to the 33rd pick, or a Phil Loadholt from Oklahoma is available.

If either Rey Maualuga or James Laurinaitis fall to wherever the Lions pick, they should pick either up. The Lions drafted Jordon Dizon in the second round last year, but Dizon is just too small to succeed in the NFL.

The second round will likely be whatever the Lions do not select with their second pick. But what if they grab one of the talented tight ends like Travis Beckum, Brandon Pettigrew or Jermaine Gresham? The Raiders did it in 2006, and Zach Miller has quickly become JaMarcus Russell's top target.

For all we know, Bobby Reid could come out, have a great combine and become the #1 overall pick.

But that's the draft, and that's why I love it.
