Jeffersonville No Match for Bloomington South Panthers, 73-54

Jeffersonville was no match for the Bloomington High School South Panthers Saturday night, as the Panthers rolled over them 73-54.

Jordan Hulls (Indiana University recruit) had previously been sick, although that didn’t show tonight. He hit 2-2 from the three point line and 6-8 from the line. Totaling in 14 for the night. Hulls also racked in seven assists, six steals and four rebounds to compliment his 14 points.

Just to show people how deep the Panthers are this year, Jordan Hulls wasn’t even the leading scorer. Sophomore Spencer Turner (who has also shown interest in Indiana University), was four-of-seven from the three-point line and finished with 15 points. Seems when Turner’s three game is on- its on.

Dee Davis (Bloomington High School North transfer), had six assists and two steals and finished with 12 points.

Keep in mind, Bloomington South, with Jordan Hulls and a few other guards struggling Friday night beat Lawrence Central by 21. Tonight they rolled over Jeffersonville by 19. They look to be a real deal, if you get a chance—go watch them!

Silver Creek High School beats Jeffersonville for first time since 94

Dragons had lost 28 of past 29 meetings

Seven games into his 12th season as boys basketball coach at Silver Creek High School, John Bradley has experienced something brand new: a victory over Jeffersonville.

Spencer Robinson scored 26 points and Nick Townsend added 13 as host Silver Creek (6-1) defeated Jeff 61-51 tonight for just its 11th win in 77 meetings between the two Clark County schools. Silver Creek’s last win over Jeff (3-1) came on Dec.16, 1994.

Jeff had won 15 in a row against Silver Creek and 28 of the past 29.

“This is huge,” Bradley said. “We finally did it. We did a nice job covering their shooters, we did a nice job on the boards and we didn’t turn the ball over much. When you do the little things—and that’s what we stress here—good things will come your way.”

The Dragons led throughout the first half but fell behind 38-31 late in the third quarter after a 10-2 Jeff run. But Michael Bradley (11 points) and Robinson drained three-pointers on consecutive possessions over the final 20 seconds of the quarter to cut the lead to 38-37.

Bradley settled his team down on the sidelines at the break between quarters.

“I told them, ‘Look at the school name on your jersey,’” he said. “I told them, ‘Don’t look at the name on the other team.’ In the past we’ve played a Jeff or a New Albany or another great team tough but began to think about who those teams were and forgot to play our game. I didn’t want us to do that again.”

Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Knights Have Grown Depth

Every day the roster seemingly gets deeper for the Bishop Luers boys basketball team, and in a month it could be even stronger.

The Knights (4-0) won three games without three players from last year’s Class 2A state championship team.

Two of them—seniors Sean Day and Jake Kuhn—returned Friday from a suspension in a 91-76 win over SAC-rival South Side. The third is senior Lawrence Barnett, but his return from a football injury is undetermined.

Barnett, who broke his leg in the football season opener, could return in January. Barnett is an Indiana football recruit and was in Bloomington on Saturday making his official visit.

“We are going to be very careful with how we deal with this situation,” Luers coach James Blackmon said of Barnett. “He has an opportunity to go play football at Indiana. This is secondary to him. His health is more important. He is moving around and jumping, and we are going to take it day by day and see how it goes.”

The 6' 6" Day and the 6-3 Kuhn came off the bench against the Archers (1-3) and entered the game with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

Kuhn had seven points and two rebounds. Day had five points and three rebounds and a couple of crowd-pleasing dunks.

“It is always good to get back seniors,” Blackmon said of Kuhn and Day. “Those guys not only bring value, but they bring a lot of leadership as well. I thought they did a great job coming off the bench rebounding and the interior defense.”

The absence of the three players provided playing time for point guard Kenny Mullen and the Sorgs—Kyle and Eric.

“They make us a different team,” Blackmon said. “I thought early in the year the young guys stepped up, and they gave us some positive minutes.”

Day started last year for the Knights, and Kuhn came off the bench.

Kuhn hit the game-clinching layup in the 69-67 win over Winchester in the 2A state championship game in March at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Lawrence North over Bishop Luers for Circle City Classic title 69-57

Inside disadvantage catches up to Knights

Greg Jones
High school sports editor

INDIANAPOLIS – For three quarters, it was the matchup everybody expected.

But in the fourth, Class 4A No. 4 Lawrence North used its height advantage to pull away for a 69-57 win over 2A No. 1 Bishop Luers in the Circle City Classic finale Saturday at Southport.

The much-taller Wildcats (4-1) outscored the Knights (4-1) 23-13 in the fourth quarter, using a lineup that includes three regulars who are 6-foot-9.

Luers’ lineup has one player taller than 6-7.

The scored was tied at 44 late in the third quarter before the Wildcats scored the final basket of the third and the first three of the fourth. The lead topped out at 16, at 65-49.

The Knights made only 12 of 35 in the second half, including six of 20 in the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats outrebounded Luers 10-5 in the fourth quarter and made 11 of 15 from the field, many on layups.

“We gave up easy buckets,” Luers coach James Blackmon said. “When you let a team with that size get second opportunities under the basket, that’s tough. They got a lot of high-percentage shots. A team with that size shooting from point-blank range is going to hurt you.”

Deshaun Thomas led the Knights with 31 points, seven below his season average.

But the 31 points does put him alone atop the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,619.

Game MVP Dominique Ferguson, who is 6-9, led Lawrence North with 19 points, and 6-7 Justin Martin had 14, all in the first half. Louisville signee Stephan Van Treese, who is 6-9, had 12, despite battling foul trouble.

North Montgomery Wins and D.J. Byrd Ties School's All-Time Scoring Leader

NORTH MONTGOMERY BOYS BASKETBALL: Chemistry builder

By Bob Cox
bcox@thepaper24-7.com
12/13/2008 2:30:00 AM

LINDEN - Opponents are finding something out about the North Montgomery boys basketball team.

There is more to them than just senior D.J. Byrd.

Friday night, the Chargers proved it again with a 75-46 thrashing of Sagamore Athletic Conference rival Tri-West.

North Montgomery forward and Purdue recruit, D.J. Byrd got his average of 24 points against the Bruins, which included three thunderous slam-dunks.

With those 24 points, Byrd is now tied with B.J. Schlicher as the school’s all-time scoring leader.

He can pass Schlicher in tonight’s 7:30 p.m. game against Class 4A McCutcheon.

With the Tri-West defense concentrating on stopping Byrd, junior forward Colin Maltsberger stepped up to score a career-high 20 points.

“Tri-West was playing defense to stop D.J. and that gave me some good looks at the basket,” Maltsberger said. “My teammates did a good job of finding me. All I had to do was run to the wing and I was wide open.”

Maltsberger connected with 5–7 from three-point range, while hitting three of those in the opening quarter when the Chargers broke out to an 18-8 lead.

Boys basketball

Reitz-Mater Dei: Panthers Beats Wildcats in Overtime

By Drew Bruno (Contact)

Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008

Staring at his scorebook, the documentation of what transpired minutes before swept over Reitz basketball coach Michael Adams.

“Incredible,” he murmured.

He had watched as his team erased a 15-point deficit. He saw Clinton Happe enjoy a career night. And even after four quarters, an overtime, and a 67-61 victory against Westside rival Mater Dei, it was still registering.

In the locker room nearby, Adams’ players were still celebrating.

“I mean, rivals, shoot—they probably thought we were going to win this game,” Happe said of the Wildcats. “We were down, heck, we came back and everybody played great tonight.”

None better than the junior guard, who broke free on an inbounds play, catching Kyle Rust’s outlet pass and going in for a layup to go ahead 65-61 and seal the win with 10 seconds left in OT.

While it was Happe’s first two-point field goal of the evening, it was good for his career-high 37th and 38th points, prompting Adams’ reaction when he looked at the scorebook later.

But if Friday night ended with a bang for Reitz (2-2, 2-0 Southern Indiana Athletic Conference), it started with a fizzle. Before a large and vocal crowd, the Panthers fell behind by 10 after one quarter and were down 15 before Happe, who scored his team’s first eight points of the night and sank a three-pointer to pull them within 12, down 36-24 at halftime.

That capped a first-half from his team that Adams called both “awful” and “embarrassing.”

The exception had to be Happe, who already had 17 points. And he was just getting started.

While Mater Dei (2-1, 0-1) made 13 of 22 first-half field goals, coach Kurt Wildeman warned them to be wary of a Reitz bunch that lost all five seniors a year ago.

Butler Recruit 6'9" Andrew Smith Fractures Foot

Indy Star reports Butler recruit, 6'9" Andrew Smith is out with a stress fracture in his foot:

Arlington 77, Cov. Christian 56
6-9 Smith is out, so Arlington’s star rules

By Nat Newell
Posted: December 13, 2008

With Covenant Christian High School’s 6-9 center Andrew Smith sidelined by a stress fracture in his foot, there was no one to counteract Arlington’s high-scoring guard Philip Freeman...almost literally.

Freeman scored 21 first-half points—the Warriors managed just 25—on nine field goals at the rim as the Golden Knights cruised to a 77-56 victory at Covenant Christian on Friday night. Freeman finished with a game-high 25 points, with Cody Rhorer adding 15, and Brandon Washington 14 as Arlington had only four baskets outside the paint.

“Philip has the ability to get to the rim against anybody,” Arlington coach Larry Nicks said. “Whether it’s (a Class) 2A (team like Covenant Christian) or a 4A, it doesn’t matter. He’s shown that for several years. He’s definitely our leader.”

Smith, a Butler University recruit averaging more than 20 points and 20 rebounds after the first two games, hurt his foot at practice Thursday while going up for an offensive rebound. He will miss 10 days, have the injury re-evaluated and could miss six to eight weeks more if it hasn’t progressed properly.

Washington Hatchets hold off Edgewood Mustangs 61-56

The Washington Hatchets did something Friday at the Hatchet House they haven’t done in six years; namely, the Hatchets took the floor without a Zeller in the lineup.

Not since Dec. 13, 2002, when Luke Zeller was ill and missed a 56-51 win at South Knox, had the Hatchets not had at least one member of the Zeller family in the lineup, a span of 146 games which has seen Washington record a 123-23 mark and two state championships.

And though Class 3A No. 2 Washington was without sophomore center Cody Zeller, who suffered a broken bone in his left hand early in last Saturday’s win at North Daviess, the Hatchets were still able to hold off Edgewood 61-56.

Washington (4-0) avenged their last loss, a defeat at Edgewood last Dec. 7, and won their 25th consecutive game dating back to last season with the help of another big man, 6-6 senior Wade Collins. Collins took up the slack against Edgewood (2-1) with another fine outing, going for 17 points and eight rebounds and making two key plays in the fourth quarter to help keep the Hatchets ahead.

Washington led 13-7 after one quarter but saw the wheels come off on the offensive end in the second quarter as Edgewood led 27-19 at the half. But the Hatchets got going in the third quarter, scoring eight straight points in less than two minutes to open the half to knot the score at 27-27, with Collins and junior guard Derek Singleton, who had a strong outing with 15 points on the night, doing most of the damage.

“The second quarter, I don’t know what happened. We just fell apart in the second quarter,” said Washington coach Gene Miiller. “Then we came out in the second half and Derek got us off to a great start. That was the key to the ballgame, we were down eight, and we tied the game up right off the bat.

Interview with Louisville Basketball Recruit Stephan Van Treese

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Lawrence North High School’s powerhouse, Stephan Van Treese. Weighing in at 200 pounds, Treese is a 6-foot-9 power forward headed to Louisville University next year. Van Treese has outstanding athleticism, which will help him tremendously in Rick Pitino’s up-tempo system.

We wanted to see what goes on in his head from day to day, being ranked one of the best/if not the best recruit in Indiana for the 2009 class. Besides basketball, what's this kid do for fun? Find out after the BUMP!

Indiana HS Hoops: Van Treese (VT), what’s up? Anything new going on with you lately? Introduce yourself.

VT: Hi, my name is Stephan Van Treese. My nickname is VT. I’m usually down for whatever.

Indiana HS Hoops: What do you do around Indy for fun, other than basketball?

VT: Other than basketball, I usual hang out with friends. In the summer I go boating and I love to go fishing, because I live on a lake. I do what every teen does usually. Play Xbox 360 online… I’m a beast at Madden. I also play Call of Duty online. I’m amazing. Go to parties…and I hang out with girls.

Indiana HS Hoops: Favorite food? Shoe size? Music, what gets you going?

VT: My favorite food is steak! My shoe size is 17. My favorite music is hip-hop. I listen to it before the games. It varies from old school (Biggie, Eazy-E) to new school (Lil' Wayne, Jeezy).

IHH: How young were you when you first started playing ball?

VT: I started playing basketball when I was 4 years old. We got second in my very first church league.

IHH: Who got you started playing ball?

VT: My dad got me started playing basketball. I’m from Indiana. Of course I’m going to play basketball.

IHH: What kind of numbers did you put up last season?

VT: I averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists. (guessing)

IHH: How’s the season going at Lawrence North? I see you guys fell to Terre Haute South, what’s up with that?

VT: Our season is going well as of right now. I feel like we are heading down the right track. We lost to THS because we tried to out-shoot them.

We went away from our bigs all night and they were playing a sagging 2-3. They dared our guards to shoot, and they didn’t hit a high percentage.

IHH: Excited for the T-Mobile Invitational? Pretty sweet.

VT: Yeah… I’m very excited for it because we get to play some high caliber players. I’m good friends with a lot of the guys on the teams there. I know Derrick Favors, Shawn Williams, and Roger Franklin. Its going to be fun playing against those guys.

IHH: Other than Louisville, who’s your favorite college team?

VT: Indiana University. Grew up a fan.

IHH: NBA?

VT: The Pacers. I loved watching the 2000 team. My favorite team ever. Reggie, Smits, Jackson, and the Davises!

IHH: Any favorite players?

VT: My favorite player right now is Dwight Howard. One Word: “BEAST”. He is a example of how to play powerful.

IHH: At Louisville, what will you be, still a power forward?

VT: I am pretty sure I will play the 3- 5 positions. I know they want me to be able to guard them.

IHH: What would you say are your best offensive and defensive skills?

VT: I run the floor very well for my size. And I rebound very well. I play hard.

IHH: You are considered the one of the best, if not the best player in Indiana for the 2009 class. How is living in the spotlight?

VT: I feel like I have had the spotlight on me since middle school. It's hard to be on top for so long. I have a lot of critics.

The thing with me is people want to see better statistics from me, but I just do what I can do for my team to win. I want to be Mr. Basketball. That is one of my goals.

IHH: Along with being the best, people hate and say you’re way over-rated. Any words for them?

VT: I’m used to people hating on me. I guess its a part of being good. I just want to win. I’m not a selfish player. People say I need to be more selfish and score more. I do whatever it takes to win.

I think my game has improved a lot. I also think people criticize me a lot is because I’m not going to IU. I just picked Louisville because it was the best fit for me.

IHH: There has been a lot of potential to come out of Lawrence North… How hard is it to fill the shoes set before you?

VT: It gives our team motivation. We work hard everyday not only because of the players before us, but because Coach Keefer pushes for perfection.

IHH: So what are your other interested other than basketball? I see you have Lil’ Wayne as your favorite artist on Facebook, you know he kissed Birdman on the lips, right?

VT: Lil' Wayne is the greatest rapper alive, haha! He is very creative… I like him because he works hard at what he does. He brings something different to the table every time he raps. I’m a big sports guy. I will watch just about any sport. I’m very competitive.

IHH: Any final words?

VT: I just want everyone to know I am very passionate about the game. I have been working hard to play basketball in college. I try every day to not take my abilities for granted. I want to be Mr. Basketball. Being Mr. Basketball for Indiana is a BIG deal. Everybody in Indiana loves basketball, it is life. I want my name to go down in history.
