Giant Killers: Green Archers Outlast The Invincible Red Warriors (PT 1)

When we talk about "Giant Killers", there's always two sides of the coin-- the giants and of course the killers.

Killers may be great nonetheless giants also have their own story that deserves recognition.

Let me tell you mine...

OUR team, OUR school, OUR pride, OUR tragic ending.

The year was 2007, our school the University of the East together with it's "Red Warriors" one of the country's best basketball program that crafted out 18 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP-Philippine counterpart of the US' NCAA) championship and numerous Philippine basketball legends that includes the likes of Baby Dalupan, Robert Jaworski, Allan Caidic, Jerry Cordinera and James Yap had seen it's best moments since the glory days of the late the 80's.

Late 80's?

Yes, It was the best of times. Every year thousands of delightful students and alumni gather around a huge bonfire amidst the campus grounds to cherish almost everything-- from another year of dominance in the CPA board exam, to another top-notch dentist and of course another coveted UAAP championship trophy that is about to be put in our storied gallery.

A torch of winning tradition that has been passed from generations-- journalists, national artists, businessman, athletes, politicians and to some a future president.

Most especially that winning tradition is well-exhibited in our basketball program.

Basketball is UE's way of living, no... better, basketball is UE's way of winning.

All Good Things Come to an End

A great day begins with the sun shining in the EAST but eventually, at the right time-- It'll set in the west.

As soon as the basketball dynasty that stood for decades crumble into pieces, all the other dynasties also started it's deterioration. The CPA dominance was gone, the top-notch dentist follows and so as the huge bonfire.

It has no logical explanations but the turn of events seem to suggest that in order to bring back the winning ways in all our other endeavours. We should first bring back the basketball supremacy which we felt rightfully belong to us.

After all, it is our destiny..

Or is it simply in our minds? Is it really destined for us?

Hence, destiny seems to be zippy and playful at times.

JLR Presents: The Saga of the NBA Finals

Last Thursday, basketball-loving creatures (or at least the ones who fancy purple and gold) were once again treated to another grandiose display of skill and talent: Game One of the 2009 NBA Finals.

Before the contest, there were sideshows: Lamar Odom's sweet tooth was highlighted, among others, but the most serious segment concerned the doubts of Kobe Bryant's quest to claim another NBA ring without the "Big Diesel" Shaquille O'Neal at his side.

To clarify the matter, just ask Shaq himself, who made a statement on his Twitter regarding the matter (now that's social networking at it's best)!

He stated that he wants Kobe to win his fourth title.

Shaq probably wants to redeem himself a year after he maligned Kobe, commenting on Bryant's inability to win a championship without him and criticizing his performance in the '08 Finals against the abysmal Boston Celtics (which is most unbecoming of a gentleman).

The fact that he wished the best for Kobe says it all. What great PR for the Cactus!

Come to think of it, why not ask the president Barack Obama himself?

He put it simply: "Lakers in six."

Could he be wrong? Well, what does Kobe himself think?

I think he showed us when he played inspired basketball from the get-go. What does G-O-A-T stand for, now?

The Mamba put the matter in his own hands, scoring 40 points, grabbing eight boards, and dishing out eight assists.

He almost single-handedly carried the Los Angeles Lakers on his broad shoulders and overwhelmed the Orlando Magic—or, for that matter, the whole city of Orlando.

Forget about LeBron James now. He may be better than Kobe, but hell, in order to win gracefully, you must first learn how to lose with class.

The King is a sore loser!

In closing:

If Kobe plays the whole series the way he did Game One, I may agree with Obama in closing Gitmo, but I'll definitely overrule him in NBA predictions.

I say Kobe in five!

...I mean, Lakers in five!

Cavaliers-Magic: Cleveland Stays Alive in Game Five

The Cleveland Cavaliers played, won and lived to see another day in front of the jam-packed Quicken Loans arena, Thursday night.

The Cavaliers pulled out an impressive 112-102 win over the resilient and seemingly over-achieving Orlando Magic to extend the series to a Game Six.

The crowd of thousands were once again witnesses to another spectacular performance by reigning MVP LeBron James.

James registered his fourth career playoff triple-double with 37 points, 14 rebounds, and 12 assists.

The Cavaliers jumped off to a blazing start, cementing a 22-point lead early on, but the strong-willed Magic retaliated through hard work and great defense, putting together a massive run to grab the lead early in the third quarter.

However, the Cavaliers courtesy of King James, made a furious rally in the fourth quarter.

Mo Williams, Delonte West, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas also provided solid contributions, scoring a combined 53 points.

On the other hand, seldom-used Daniel Gibson served as the X-factor and gave the Clevelanders memoirs of his excellent performance in the 2007 NBA finals against the San Antonio Spurs.

Gibson contributed 11 points off the bench, including timely three-point baskets in critical moments of the game.

On the Magic's side, Hedo Turkoglu led the scoring parade with 29 points, while Dwight Howard added 24 points and 10 rebounds in a losing cause.

Game Six will be played Saturday night in Orlando at 8:30 E.T.

The Magic hope to close out the series at home while the Cavaliers look to force a decisive Game Seven.

Lakers Inch Closer To Finals; Nips Nuggets 103-94

I'll lay it out simple—Phil Jackson must have been drunk when he wrote the book, "L.A. Lakers: A team in search of it's soul."

Maybe yes, maybe no.

However, soul searching wasn't the case Wednesday night as the Los Angeles Lakers displayed commendable cohesiveness and contagious defense en route to a 103-94 victory over the dangerous Denver Nuggets.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers scoring parade with 22 points but no star shined brighter than Lamar Odom who exploded for the first time in the series.

After a sub-par performance in the first four games of the Western Conference Finals, Odom finally stamped his mark, registering 19 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, a ton of hustle, and a lot of heart in the series' tie-breaker.

The Lakers also had big boosts from Derek Fisher, Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol, Trevor Ariza, Luke Walton, and Shannon Brown.

Fisher and Bynum jumped off to a quick start and finished the game with 12 and nine points apiece. Walton sustained the energy in the second quarter, while Ariza and Gasol, the usual suspects, starred in timely plays.

Conversely, Brown also had a big impact, especially in piloting a 21-5 run that started with a vivacious dunk right in the face of the Nuggets' Chris Andersen.

On the Nuggets' side, Anthony led the charge with 31 points.

Chauncey Billups added 12 points but sat out the majority of the first half due to foul trouble.

With the win, the Lakers jump off to a 3-2 series lead and are one win away from advancing to the NBA finals for the second consecutive year.

Magic Stuns Cavs in OT, 116-114

LeBron James finally got much-needed help from his teammates.

However, it still wasn't enough to disappoint the hometown crowd in Orlando, as they fell short in tying the series against the rampaging Orlando Magic.

James and the rest of the Cavaliers were dealt their third loss in the last four outings.

Dwight Howard, the behemoth that he is, led the way for the Magic, scoring 27 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and displaying an abysmal defense inside the paint.

Supporting Howard were Mickael Pietrus and Rafer Alston, who connected on timely 3-point baskets and scored a combined 43 points.

Howard scored mostly on vicious dunks and easy lay-ups, while Pietrus, Alston, and the rest of the magical supporting cast shot the lights out from rainbow country, crafting out a splendid in and out offense.

On the Cavaliers' side, James scored 44 hard-earned points, but the stellar scoring effort was cancelled out by his majesty's eight turnovers, which represents two-thirds of the Cavaliers' total turnovers.

The classy back court duo of Mo Williams and Delonte West added 18 and 17 points apiece, but were shut down late and finished the game with a combined 12 of 30 from shooting from the field.

It was a seesaw battle right from the start, with 11 lead changes and seven deadlocks.

The Magic led most of the final period, but the Cavaliers crawled their way back, courtesy of James, who sent the game into overtime via the charity stripe.

With a half second to go, the Magic had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a desperate lob attempt for Howard went catastrophic as Anderson Varejao fell off him.

In the overtime period, Howard scored 10 of the Magic's 16 points, and showed nerves-of-steel, connecting on two crucial free throws.

Magic now leads the series 3-1, and inches closer to its first trip to the NBA finals since 1995.

Bryant's 41 Lifts Los Angeles Lakers over Denver Nuggets, 103-97

From Los Angeles to Cleveland and now to Denver.

The nail biting continues.

Stars will always shine on any given night thus the brightest will always bloom on the darkest hours.

The Los Angeles' trio of Kobe Bryant, Trevor Ariza and Pau Gasol traded clutch plays against Denver's fantastic four of Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith, and Chris Andersen.

The Nuggets led most of the game, but when the Lakers put the pedal on the metal— there's no stopping the glamour boys of Hollywood.

With less than a minute and a half to go in regulation, the cold-blooded triggerman Bryant sank a 3-pointer over the outstretched arms of Smith to change the complexion of the ball game and to give the Lakers a taste of the lead, 96-95.

Moments later, Ariza delivered the dagger, stealing an inbound pass intended for Anthony.

Bryant then iced the game via the charity stripe.

Bryant, last year's MVP carried the scoring load for the Lakers with 41 markers while Ariza and Gasol added a combined 36 points and 15 rebounds.

On the Nuggets' side, Billups anchored the team with 18 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds while Smith and spark-plug Andersen added 10 and 15 points respectively.

Anthony who scored 30 plus points in his last five games was limited to 21 on a horrific night, shooting 4 of 13 from the field.

The physical, emotional, and dramatic game turned into a battle of spurts in the final period as both the Lakers and Nuggets threw everything except the kitchen sink.

With the win the Lakers jumped to a 2-1 lead over the Nuggets in the Western conference finals.

LeBron James' Buzzer-Beating Three Pushes The Cavaliers Over Magic, 96-95

Game Two of the NBA Eastern conference finals plays out almost the same story line as Game One.

The Cleveland Cavaliers jump off to a great start, firing on all cylinders, leading by as many as 23 points halfway in the second quarter.

On the other hand the Orlando Magic put on resistance after resistance courtesy of smooth penetrations and stellar shooting from beyond the 3-point territory.

However, there is a big difference. Simply put—the Cavaliers won.

But winning isn't that easy against a determined Magic squad. Then again LeBron James makes it look easy.

James led the way for the Cavaliers scoring 35 points including the game-winning 3-point basket with exactly a second to go.

"We just couldn't afford to go down 0-2,'' James said in the post-game interview. "That's just a great shot. Now we have to get ready for Game 3. There's a lot to clean up.''

Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu carried the load for the Magic scoring 23 and 21 points respectively.

On the side of the Cavaliers' the backcourt trio of Mo Williams, Sasha Pavlovic and Delonte West scored a combined 40 points.

The first half saw sheer dominance from the Cavaliers, however the Magic furiously crawled back into the game inch by inch and finally with one second to go, grabbed the lead via a short jumper from Turkoglu to the delight of the Magic bench.

But somehow the Magic forgot something—that James is a magician himself.

Lakers Outlast Nuggets 105-103 In Series Opener

It was a tale of two stellar performances from world class athletes trying to outplay each other.

In the end, the Kobe Bryant-led Los Angeles Lakers proved to be too much for the visiting Carmelo Anthony-fueled Denver Nuggets.

Bryant scored 18 of his 40 points in the critical pay-off period en route to a 105-103 victory in the western conference series opener.

Not to be outdone, Anthony played magnificently all game long, scoring 39 points highlighted by seven three-pointers for a losing, yet massive, effort.

The famed Staples Center, home of glamorous Hollywood events, turned into a savage gladiator arena from tip-off up to the end of the 48-minute see-saw battle, which saw a determined Nuggets squad up to the challenge of dethroning the western conference champion.

The Nuggets led by as many as 13 points and controlled the game early on.

With less than six minutes remaining, the Nuggets held a six point advantage and appeared to be poised to win Game One as Anthony, Chauncey Billups and the rest of the gang of blue played smooth and steady.

But as the saying goes "you can never underestimate the heart of a champion."

The Lakers furiously crawled back into the game, courtesy of last minute heroics from Bryant, Derek Fisher, Trevor Ariza, and Pau Gasol.

Fisher hit a big three with less than three minutes to go to give the Lakers a one-point cushion, while Ariza and Gasol starred in key defensive stops to ensure the Lakers' victory.

Hence, the brightest star that shined that night was perhaps Bryant's, who sank crucial free throws down the stretch and grabbed the most important rebound of a miss free throw by Nuggets' J.R. Smith.

<![endif]-->

This coming weekend, the euphoria of boxing madness will once again cross borders and take center stage, setting foot in the Philippine archipelago at the historic Cebu coliseum.

No, it's not about the "Thrilla in Manila" and it ain't about Manny Pacquiao, but one thing's for sure...

It'll be another grandiose night for boxing purists around the globe as world title hopefuls—former WBO Asia-Pacific youth superflyweight champion AJ "Bazooka" Banal and valiant Boholano warrior Czar Amonsot—hope to put on an astounding show in front of their countrymen, a show that could perhaps be a ticket to another shot at an elusive world title.

Banal had a great chance last year for the vacant WBO superflyweight crown, but failed to crown himself champion in lieu of a disappointing 10th round TKO loss at the hands of Panama's Rafael Concepcion.

Conversely, Amonsot also had his chance about two years ago against then-WBO lightweight champion Michael Katsidis. It was a courageous stand for Amonsot—only to lose via scorecards in a "fight of the year" caliber bout.

Nevertheless, both fighters would eventually bounce back after their world title frustrations in a twin-bill fight card early this year.

Banal, the spitfire that he was, showed off a rare blend of speed, power, and precision en route to a fourth-round TKO win against Indonesian champ Nouldy Manakane.

While Amonsot, after an 18-month hiatus, immediately shook off the ring rust against tried-and-tested Zoel Fidal, Amnsot capitalized on Fidal’s mistakes, thus stopping the opposition in the fifth round.

Both Banal and Amonsot will headline the fightcard dubbed as "Pagsubok" (Challenge). Banal will face former world champion Mbwana Matamle and Amonsot will take on Kenyan pride Morris Chule.

"Pagsubok" will remain true to its meaning as this will be a big challenge for both Filipino protagonists.

Surely it will not be the last.

As a fight fan, I can only hope...

Manny Pacquiao--Floyd Mayweather: An In-Depth Preview (Part One of Four)

A week ago, Filipino sensation Manny Pacquiao once again solidified his grasp at the top spot in boxing's immaculate pound-for-pound list, courtesy of a vivacious display of god-like skills and genuine killer instinct en route to an unprecedented second round TKO win against tough British pugilist Ricky Hatton.

At that same day, former pound-for-pound king, Floyd Mayweather Jr., after a 17-month hiatus from the sport, had seemingly shared the boxing spotlight as he announced his comeback fight against unified lightweight champion, and Pacquiao-nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez.

While it's hard to jump to conclusions, the mainstream public seems to be already salivating on a proposed Pacquiao-Mayweather megafight late this year.

If it pushes through, it'll definitely rocket-boost the anticipation and enthusiasm of the sport in a much higher level.

If so, allow me to have the honor of being the first guy to scrutinize and analyze each fighter's strengths, weaknesses, and the matter on how they would fare against each other.

So, shall we?

Punching Power

As a boxer moves up in weight class, he often loses some of his power; thus his K.O. percentage significantly drops.

While it is the general rule, Pacquiao seems to play the role of a paradox statement.

Pacquiao surprisingly carried his punching power during his voyage northward, dishing out splendid outings in the 135, 140, and even in the 147 lb weight class.

He carried his power and inflicted damage to the likes of David Diaz, Oscar Dela Hoya, and recently a short but sweet (at least for the Filipinos) demolition job against Hatton.

Conversely, Mayweather, although slightly underrated in terms of power, had already showed the boxing world what he is capable of. He can punch and punch; he did against the likes of Hatton, Arturo Gatti, Angel Manfredy, and the late Diego Coralles.

The verdict? I'll go with Pacquiao mainly because he has devastating power in both hands that could spell the difference.

Handspeed

Speed kills...and it really does.

Perhaps an argument could be made as to who is the faster fighter between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

They both have their own bragging rights and everyone is well-entitled to his/her opinion, but there's one thing I'm sure of: It would yield lesser debates if you'll just say that these two probably are included in the list of the fastest men to ever wear boxing gloves.

Pacquiao definitely can pull the trigger at any given moment, launching one flurry after another.

On the other hand, Mayweather, though not really accustomed to launching into bundles, can penetrate any defense, landing a blitzkrieg or two in varying angles, all at the same time.

While this could be subjective and might raise some eyebrows, I drop my verdict and I'll give Pacquiao my nod because of his ability to land punches in multiples of tens...thousands that is.

(to be continued)

Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr.: The Epitome of a Real Dream Match

This past weekend boxing enthusiast were once again treated with another stellar showing from pound for pound king and now five-division world champion Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao, the crafty Filipino phenom displayed what was perhaps the best boxing of his illustrious career against the dangerous Ricky Hatton.

Nobody expected the fight to end in an instant, as Pacquiao probably reinvented the word "dominance" and inserted the phrase "second round technical knockout" as it's new Merriam-Webster dictionary meaning.

Conversely, on that same day formerly retired pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his comeback fight set for July 18 against tough Mexican catalyst Juan Manuel Marquez.

Well, it could be coincidence, but one thing's for sure Mayweather wants to reclaim the throne he once vacated while Pacquiao wants to expand his immovable dynasty.

I guess there's only one way to please this two boxing pugilists... pit them against each other.

Both camps had already expressed interest in a possible "fight of the century" and assuming that Mayweather Jr. gets pass Marquez in an impressive fashion.

Our eyes might feast on something classical yet scarce as Halley's Comet in this era of boxing.

Indeed, Pacquiao-Mayweather, once thought to be a mythical matchup is now a distinct possibility.

The master of offensive repertoire against the champion of defensive brilliance.

It won't be another overhyped match-up because it'll surely live up to expectations. Forget about Hagler-Hearns, Forget about Pryor-Arguello. A showdown between the two is one for the ages.

Mayweather although already considered by many as an all-time great has yet to fight someone who has pushed him to his limits.

We are yet to see the full potential of the pretty boy as he almost always shoulder-rolled on to easy victories.

On the other hand, Pacquiao seemingly looks invincible as of late. Simply outclassing each and every foe that comes his way.

Boxing critics and purists often munch on humble pie after each and every Pacquiao triumph.

It's going to be a tough call as both warriors bring so much on the table.

Pacquiao, well equipped with a brutal left hand and an equally destructive right hand that could easily send any mortal down on his knees.

Similarly, Mayweather has so many weapons in his arsenal.

He plays smooth and controlled but he can also play rough and dirty depending on the situation. He has the tendency to operate with surgeon-like precision, displaying accurate technique in dismantling his unlucky victim.

If this fight comes into fruition. The boxing world will witness a duel that will surely be remembered for decades to come.

Technical expertise, systematic aggression plus the glitz, the glamour and all the sideshows.

Finally, the term "Dream Match" is given a most fitting description.

Manny Pacquiao: "Who Will Stop the Pacific Storm?"

The dawn of a new day starts with the sun rising in the east.

Eventually, when the day ends, that same heavenly body can be seen slowly setting in the west.

Fortunately, it really did, Saturday night. Well, except for the fact that it wasn't slow.

Newly-crowned super lightweight czar and reigning pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, the best the east has to offer displayed a performance that was beyond description. Making short-work of Manchester pride Ricky Hatton, the best the west has to offer.

After several months in anticipation, the much awaited "fight of the century" came into fruition just moments ago.

However, there is a big irony.

We've waited ages for something that ended in just a blink of an eye.

Pacquiao must be in a hurry. We can't really blame him, the enjoyment brought about by the lights of Vegas must be really that enticing to give him a genuine motivation to end the fight as quickly as possible.

Perhaps, he was thinking of slot machines, shopping, maybe?

But I guess it has something to do with "money" (Money May).

A powerful shot to the jaw ended the fight with less than a minute to go before the end of round two.

No one expected this to be this easy even Freddie Roach miscalculated the outcome, predicting a third round TKO win for Pacquiao.

The fight saw a focused and determined Pacquiao weaving in and out of trouble, while at the same time connecting vicious and brutal assaults that seemingly almost always found the target—which is Hatton's jaw, body, face...simply put, every part of Hatton's battle-tested body.

Pacquiao moved like a storm against the Manchester hero, scoring three knockdowns. Two in the first round and in the second round landing the final lethal blow that shocked and stunned Hatton together with all his 25,000 supporters who flew to Las Vegas .

Perhaps London bridge was really falling down.

Hence, the question is..."Who will stop the Pacific storm?"

The Undertaker: From Texas Red To Worldwide Phenom

Six-time world champion, 17-0 Wrestlemania record, an array of gimmicks, millions of admiring fans and a lot of tired and exhausted opponents.

Mark William Callaway better known as the Undertaker has been special all along.

If there's a wrestler that can set people into believing that pro wrestling is real, it's no less than the Undertaker.

Likewise if there's a personage that can inflict fear and terror in the minds of kids at night, it's no less than the phenom himself. (Trust me.. I had nightmares featuring Undertaker when I was eight)

He lost his first wrestling match in 1984 but after 25 years.

He won the hearts of many.

"The Undertaker is the most consistent" - Celeste Winchester

Yes, consistency is the word. Since his debut the Undertaker had crafted scintillating performances against the likes of Jimmy Snuka, Jerry Lawler, Hulk Hogan, Mankind and Shawn Michaels to name a few.

For 25 years he continues to dazzle and amaze wrestling fans with breathtaking escapades, exhilarating stunts and masterful exhibitions.

The Undertaker is a force to reckoned with who honed and perfected his trade just like a bottle of wine that endures time and improves quality through the years.

"Undertaker is a rare blend of nostalgia and modern in-ring sleek" - Ray Bogusz

The Undertaker through his achievement had built wrestling history.

The memoirs—classic, the matches—superb..

He was one of the pioneers of professional wrestling. Coffin match, anyone? How about a Buried alive match?

"His streak at Wrestlemania has become a Wrestlemania tradition in itself" - Jason Le Blanc

The Undertaker's Wrestlemania streak is beyond description.

The Wrestlemania tradition is not about 17-0, thus 17-0 is an understatement.

It's all about the perfect execution of finishing moves, brilliant display of technicalities and classy rendition against the best WWE has to offer.

To Jimmy Snuka, to Ric Flair, to Randy Orton, to Batista and most recently to Shawn Michaels. The streak is kept intact together with the tradition and history that immortalized the Dead man.

He first entered the squared ring 25 years ago as "Texas Red", 25 years later he still enters the ring.

Hence "Texas Red" no more, more like..

Well, a "Worldwide Phenom."

Rodel Mayol: Does He Have What it Takes?

All men are entitled to his own 15 minutes of fame.

Hence for Rodel Mayol his own shining moment is within striking distance.

On the contrary it won't be any another walk in the park, as Mayol will go up against arguably one of the best pure boxer to ever graced the squared ring.

Mayol will go up against Puerto rican pride Ivan Calderon.

He'll have his hands full as Calderon, although feather-fisted is ironically one of the most feared catalyst in the lower weight classes.

Calderon boasting an impressive 32-0 record parades outstanding ring brilliance, exemplary footwork, lightning quick combinations and savvy boxing techniques.

His credentials are scintillating at any rate.

As an amateur, Calderon fought and defeated the likes of Miguel Cotto (no joke) and Brian Viloria (3W-1L)

As a professional, he is a two-division world champion and is the reigning WBO light flyweight champion. Add to that he's currently sitting at the eight spot of Ring magazine's immaculate pound for pound list.

Not to be outdone, Mayol isn't showing any signs of fear or uncertainty.

This fight is going to be his third shot at destiny. The first two were complete catastrophes at the hands of world champions Eagle Kyowa and Ulises Solis.

But this time it seems that Mayol looks quicker, sharper and stronger than ever. On the side note he's showing pleasing enthusiasm thus he even participated in Manny Pacquiao's weight loss tournament.

Bottom line, He is determined more than ever to gradient his name into the higher levels of boxing hierarchy.

In my own honest opinion. He's one of those unheralded little guys who deserves to have a belt strap on his waist.

He deserves it but he needs to work hard to have it.

Calderon is way ahead of Kyowa and Solis. He's a master of tactics, a sage of strategies nonetheless Mayol knows that he is due for his own fair share of 15 minutes of fame.

The question is...

Does he have what it takes?

A Requiem For a Boxer: The Tragedy That Was Lito Sisnorio

It's never a mortal sin to dream big, much less to wish for a good, happy life.

Food at the table, education for the children. A comfortable, warm house, financial security, the joy of having a family of your own.

Simple dreams, but for many, dreams that are uncertain. The future? Bleak and dim.

Perhaps because of poverty, lack of education and indolence. (Well, that is another story reserved for another day.)

Awkward as it seems, sometimes sports becomes the last resort in fulfilling the dreams of having a contented, financially-secured life.

Out of the slums came Manny Pacquiao and out of those same slums came people who wish to follow the footsteps of the Filipino world champion.

One of them was Angelito Sisnorio Jr., simply Lito to his family and friends. Nothing special, nothing spectacular, but just like many of us, a born dreamer.

He's not your usual Manny Pacquiao who's always motivated to give glory to his home country. More than that, he wants to help his family and the only way he knew how - was with his fists.

Sadly, It's been two years since that same fist found and connected on a man's jaw.

It was the last day of March 2007. An ordinary, cold night at the outskirts of Samut Prakan, Thailand.

In the blue corner was Lito, a boxer who had lose four of his last five fights.

In the red corner was Chatchai Sasakul, a former world champion who had fought the likes of Yuri Arbachakov, Christian Mijares, and even the pound for pound king, Pacquiao himself.

It was a clear mismatch but for Lito the lure of money (not much, only around $200) and the promise of putting food on the table was a genuine inspiration.

His record was still lean and yet he had to fight someone like Sasakul, one of the best prizefighters to ever came out of Thailand.

Lito, just as expected, lose. But the loss was big-time. He was knocked out cold in the fourth round and lost consciousness moments after the fight.

It appeared that he had suffered a blood clot and internal bleeding in his brain. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.

He had a good chance to survive, as blood clots and brain injuries are common in boxers.

But in the real world there aren't many happily ever afters and this isn't one.

He died a day after his last fight.

Indeed a tragic ending.

But what's more tragic?

It was later revealed that he went outside the Philippines without the necessary papers and that he wasn't even given a license by the Games and Amusement Board (GAB)—the Philippine boxing's authoritative body.

Those things shouldn't have happened, but the sad fact is it did happen.

Likewise, lessons should have been learned, but the depressing truth is it is a continuing craft.

There are boxers who are put up into mismatches in order for some other boxer to pad up his record. A stepping stone? No, more like a mouse put into a lion's den.

There are even boxers that are hired to lose. A sacrificial lamb at any rate.

The persons responsible for such "dark" trade should be put behind bars but, at this point, the whereabouts of Lito's manager—a Chinese national—is yet to be discovered.

The Thailand nationals who officiated and allowed the fight should be put on trial. Perhaps there was a trial, nonetheless a trial of stone.

Four our part, if the Philippine's GAB cannot monitor our boxers and other athletes alike, I think it's better if they shut their doors and stop their operations.

If they can't do their job, I think it's beneficial for everyone if they do not exist at all.

Sanctioning bodies, as the title suggests, should sanction.

But I guess they won't do that. There's much more pleasure in lying comfortably in their fully air conditioned offices while sipping a cup of coffee and reading the latest edition of a famed publication.

If this trend continues, I won't be surprise if another Lito comes out of the horizon.

Gerry Penalosa: Nothing to Be Ashamed Of

Courage can be found even at the most unlikely predicament.

He who surrenders to live and fight another day displays the biggest deed of bravery.

It takes a man to win a battle.

On the other hand, it takes more than being a man to accept defeat.

After nine rounds of a one-sided contest. Gerry Penalosa with the advise of famed trainer Freddie Roach, waved the white flag to the delight of the thousands in attendance at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

It was a bout of two champions but at the end, the younger catalyst, Juan Manuel Lopez, proved to be too much for the 36-year-old Filipino pride.

Lopez dominated the fight all throughout, although there were instances when Penalosa would launch a flurry of brilliance that did not seem to bother the Puerto Rican champion.

Penalosa was staggered and stunned on numerous occasions, and there were times when it looked like he was almost ready to receive the first knockdown of his storied career.

But heart kept him on his knees.

Penalosa showed he was never intimidated by the champion's feared aura. He stood his ground as a result he took tremendous punishment from Lopez.

Any of those punches could have knocked out Penalosa, but he chose not do roll over and die.

Never had Penalosa fought anyone as strong, as durable and as big as Lopez.

On the contrary, never had Lopez fought anyone as determined, as big-hearted and as dedicated as Penalosa.

In the end, it's safe to say that both warriors went crazy.

A 36 year-old man tried to cheat his age and went crazy unable to avoid Lopez's punishing blows.

A young, aggressive champion went crazy in giving his all, but still unable to knockout Penalosa.

Sometimes you really can't turn back the hands of time in your favor.

Sometimes you wished that you were 10 years younger.

Makes me think, What could it be if Lopez fought Penalosa at the peak of the latter's physical prowess?

Makes me think...

Penalosa-Lopez, an Epic Duel of Styles and Cultures

Absolute differences are key ingredients of classic plots.

This coming weekend the boxing limelight will shine anew as Filipino pride Gerry Penalosa will give his best and probably last endeavour to bring forth a third world title in as many weight classes.

But that is easier said than done, especially against Puerto Rican sensation Juan Manuel Lopez, the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion.

Penalosa, who turned pro in 1989 at a time when Lopez was probably playing hide and seek in the outskirts of Caguas, Puerto Rico, holds an emphatic record of 54-6-2 36KO's and scored outstanding performances against the likes of Jhonny Gonzales, Hiroshi Kawasima, and Ratanachai Sor Vorapin.

On the other hand, the much younger Lopez, who turned pro not so long ago, holds an equally impressive record of 24-0-0 with 22 big wins coming by way of stoppage.

The bout dubbed as "Champion versus Champion" will commence on Lopez's own backyard at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez, Bayamon, Puerto Rico and is expected to be one of the finest grudge matches in recent memory.

Both fighters are out on a mission.

Penalosa is hoping to ascend upon the Mount Olympus of boxing and perhaps showcase another splendid showing that will cement his legacy as one of the all-time best prize fighters Malaysia has ever produced.

Similarly, Lopez is out to etch his name on the higher fortress of sweet science, hoping to follow the footsteps of his countryman, Felix Trinidad.

Lopez is a force to be reckoned with, an offensive menace who seemed to possess Paul Bunyan's unusual lumberjack strength.

Penalosa is a defensive tactician who honed and perfected his craft just like a bottle of wine that endures time and improves quality through the years.

The bout, or should I say war, is embellished with gold and silver linings and carries dreams and aspirations not only of two courageous gentlemen, but also the dreams and aspirations of two proud and storied cultures.

Brian Viloria, The Incredible Story Of The Hawaiian Punch

Out of need springs desire, and out of desire springs the energy and the will to win.

Last weekend Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria showed the desire to win. From then on the energy and the will to win sprang out.

He never looked back and eventually the inevitable happened as he landed a perfectly timed counter punch that sent Ulises Solis down to his knees.

Viloria was world champion once again.

A great champion, a great person, another inspiring story.

"This is more for you guys and to do it right here, I trained doubly hard for this because everybody thinks that I didn’t have the heart but I showed it tonight" - Brian Viloria, April 20, 2009, Business Mirror

A small and skinny boy, Viloria started boxing during 1989 at the tender age of nine years old.

He compiled an outstanding 230-8 win/loss record during his storied amateur career that was highlighted by splendid performances against elite fighters such as Ivan Calderon, Glen Donaire, and Nonito Donaire, who he defeated in the finals of the 2000 US Olympic trials.

By defeating the younger Donaire he earned himself a slot at the US Olympic team but was eliminated at the second round of Olympic competition.

After his failure in Sydney, he decided to turn professional.

The glamour brought about by being a member of the US Olympic team was overwhelming, and so were expectations early in his professional career.

Viloria almost always received red carpet treatment and VIP considerations early on.

He was expected to win and, likewise, he did not disappoint. He went on to win fight after fight.

In his 18th bout he ended the boxing career of journeyman Ruben Contreras, almost killing him in the process (thank God he recovered some days after the fight).

Contreras suffered a seizure and underwent brain surgery after the contest.

It was yet another masterful performance from Viloria. However, the psychological effect of the Contreras bout went under the radar.

On the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Hector Velasquez bout, Viloria entered the prizefighting ring for the 19th time.

On that glorious day, September 10, 2005, Viloria scored an emphatic first round knockout win against then WBC light flyweight champion Eric Ortiz.

From then on, his fame reached a much higher level, especially in the Philippines.

A hero's welcome, flamboyant parades, a courtesy call to the President; the attention being given to him was Pacquiao-like, a Jordanesque treatment.

He would go on to defend his WBC crown twice; the first was a definite success, the second was an abyssmal failure.

His streak of 20 straight wins come to an end when he faced Omar Nino Romero.

He lost his title but the fame and the name were still there.

With his superb credentials and superstar status, he didn't have a tough time getting another shot at the world championship.

Twice he tried to regain his crown and twice he failed.

The first was in a rematch with Romero in which he put on a mediocre performance and was lucky that the fight was ruled as a no-contest.

His second opportunity came after his rematch with Romero. He faced Edgar Sosa in a fight that saw a slow, unfocused, and flustered Viloria.

Two of the judges scored the bout in favor of Sosa while the other had it as a tie.

At this moment, people were unanimous in saying that he was done.

In the blink of an eye, the charismatic Viloria fell from the pinnacle on which he was placed. In an instant he lost the heart, the desire, and the enigmatic quality that put him on top of the boxing world.

He came crashing down. Sports analysts and experts alike had often concluded that the fight against Contreras left him scarred mentally.

It was evident that he wasn't the same fighter who brutally massacred Contreras. He lost the "killer instinct." He appeared reluctant to launch his destructive right hook.

From the luxurious casinos of Las Vegas and the elegant arenas of Los Angeles, to which Viloria had become accustomed, he moved to small clubs and flea markets.

"I fought in a swap meet and in places where people didn’t even want to go" - Brian Viloria, April 20, 2009, Philippine Star

The glitz and glamor was replaced by rags and paper dolls.

But that didn't discourage Viloria.

There's something special in the slumps. It makes champions.

Viloria has clawed his way back to the top, just like he did some years ago, but this time his reign will be much longer.

It was a fairytale ending. After a long and winding journey the champion has been resurrected.

"It ain't about how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward" - Rocky Balboa, 2006

Nonito Donaire: A Walk in the Park, Successfully Defended His Titles

At the site of the historic "Thrilla in Manila" thousands of spectators witnessed an unlikely ending of a world-class duel.

Raul Martinez the unfortunate one, waives the Philippine flag in rare class act.

Nonito Donaire the victor, scored a fourth round TKO win in front of his adoring countrymen.

Donaire the reigning and defending IBO/IBF flyweight king made short work of the Mexican-American challenger.

He dazzled the crowd with his beautiful left hooks that send Martinez down four times in the course of the fight. Two times in the opening round, once in the second round and the final one in the fourth round.

After seeing the damage done by Donaire. The referee calls a halt in the contest.

Donaire improved to 21-1-0 14 Ko's while Martinez dropped to 24-1-0 14Ko's.

A Filipino day perhaps as it was a complete sweep as both Donaire and Brian Viloria put on a brilliant show.

It was story book ending in the first double-title fight held in the Philippine archipelago.

Brian Viloria: Mission Accomplished, a Champion is Resurrected

Opportunity knocks only once but temptation leans on the doorbell.

In front of his countrymen, Brian "The Hawaiian Punch" Viloria reclaimed what is rightfully his and re-established himself as one of the best little men of boxing.

Viloria displayed a masterful performance in going toe to toe against IBF light flyweight king Ulises Solis and crowned himself as the new champion of the division.

Viloria dazzled the crowd with his brilliant ressilency trading punches against the much more favored Solis.

He consistently stunned and hurt Solis throughout the whole fight that ends dramatically in the 11th round with a big right hook that shattered the Mexican champion Solis.

Viloria improved to 25-2-0 15Ko's while Solis dropped to 28-2-1 20Ko's.

Solis labeled as a "Filipino Assassin" had defeated Filipino contenders such as Rodel Mayol, Glen Donaire and Bert Batawang but on this faithful day the Filipino Assasin's streak against Pinoy sluggers finally come to an end.

The emotions, the mayhem and the goosebumps.

On this day history was made as two great champions give their all. In the end the Filipino enjoyed an impressive comeback, a memorable homecoming.

<![endif]-->Ricky Hatton, the pride of Manchester has been on top of the jr. welterweight division for a considerable amount of time.

He has fought the best his division has to offer.

Kostya Tszyu, Paulie Malignaggi, Jose Luis Castillo great names. Great warriors who succumbed to Hatton’s powerful flurries.

Still, the dilemma of a Ricky Hatton is the fact that the he was often labeled as a one-dimensional brawler that almost always comes forward without any concern on defense.

His career defining moments were often marred with thoughts of “what if”

What if...he had fought Tszyu and Castillo during their prime years.

What if...he had fought a healthy, two-fisted Malignaggi.

Hatton throughout his career wasn’t given the benefit of the doubt. He was always this and that. He won because his opponent was this and that.

However, I firmly believe that Hatton with all due respect to Marquez will be the toughest challenge that’ll come Manny Pacquiao’s way.

Through the years Hatton had mastered the art of pressure fighting. He is a dangerous opponent with a very dangerous punch.

In recent fight predictions and forecast of the Pacquiao-Hatton duel. Hatton always seems to fall on the losing end of the stick.

There have been daring and bold predictions of an early round knockout victory for Pacquiao. Other so-called “expert” quoted that Hatton is tailor-made for Pacquiao.

I really don’t know how they come up with such predictions but believe me Hatton will come to fight. He isn’t going to roll over and die.

East meets west…

Two separate worlds in faraway continents…

Millions of people anticipating the moment of truth…

One superfight that’ll be remembered for years to come…

Two brave ring gladiators…

The one out to prove he’s still the best…

The other out to prove that he can be the best…

When the curtain falls and all is said and done, only one man will reign supreme. One will enjoy the sweetness of victory while the other will taste the bitterness of failure.

Only one man is destined continue the ballad of his boxing career.

Floyd Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez, Textbook Perfection

There had been reports that negotiations for the proposed superfight that'll feature former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his comeback fight against Lightweight king and Mexican great Juan Manuel Marquez had already been finalized.

There are rumors that a September date had already been set but both camps still kept quiet.

This would be a Dream fight in any respect. The Mayweather-Marquez duel will shake up the boxing world whom ever the victor may be.

It would showcased two of the best boxing tacticians of the recent era in a masterful display of both sweet science artistry and colorful pageantry.

Mayweather, now on a 16-month lay-off (and still counting) is itching to get back in the ring to permanently cement his legacy as one of the best fighters of all time and to reclaim the throne of boxing supremacy, he once relinquished.

On the other hand, Marquez having abysmal failure in getting a third crack at four-division world champion and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao might land on the bigger jackpot.

He might as well establish himself as the best fighter to ever come out of Mexico surpassing the great Julio Cesar Chavez.

Marquez equipped with his precise tactics and stunning counterpunches is out to prove that he is the best out in the horizon.

While the defensive wizard Mayweather furnished with his lightning-speed reflexes is ready to once again ascend to the boxing heavens.

A truly enticing fight that'll stir a lot of interest.

A Dream fight for boxing coaches and strategists alike.

Alas! Textbook Perfection.

Portland Trail Blazers: Once The Ball Gets Rolling...

This year roars came from every corner of the Rose Garden, the kind of mayhem that's been missing with the Portland Trail Blazers.

There's so much excitement at the "Little Beirut" as the team clinched another playoff berth. Another crack at destiny. Another shot for supremacy.

They had experienced monumental success and unveiled big surprises all season long.

The reason to the success perhaps is the enthusiasm and energy that the young, talent-laden crew bring forth the table.

Anchored by Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez, Steve Blake and the rest of the looney but fearless cast of superb potentials.

A rebirth of the occured. They haven't enjoyed this much success in recent years but upon the completion of the well-rounded cast.

They came up with upset after upsets. Surprising opponent after opponent.

The Playoff is on it's way, the jittery is just around the corner.

If the Trail Blazers continue what they're doing. Nobody knows, they might be running and gunning until June.

There's something mysterious about the unexpected.

There's something inexplicable about the Trail Blazers.

Anytime, anyhow. They just might pull a rabbit out of the hat.

With all those surprises last regular season. I won't be shocked If the Trail Blazers unveil yet another Cinderella plot.

Once the ball get rolling, it'll never stop. Believe me.

<![endif]-->

Alexander the Great once wept when he realized that there were no more worlds left to conquer.

He had reached the abyss of supremacy, an immeasurably deep chasm that had nothing more to offer than an oasis of nothingness and an ocean of emptiness.

He despaired, and soon enough his dynasty crumbled to pieces.

Manny Pacquiao is by no means no Alexander the Great, but by outclassing great fighters such as Oscar de la Hoya, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, and Lehonolo Ledwaba, he has reached the abyss of supremacy in boxing.

It’s almost one year since Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced his retirement, which gave way to Pacquiao’s reign.

Due to the nature of his elevation to the top spot (albeit a logical one the, No. 2 should assume a vacated No. 1 designation, though maybe not definitive), doubts of his numero uno status lingered in the air for a while.

But after a masterful performance against then-WBC lightweight champion David Diaz and a scintillating domination of de la Hoya, Pacquiao ultimately erased all those doubts.

Pacquiao is currently sitting comfortably on his pound-for-pound throne, enjoying the fame and fortune that he has worked hard for.

So now, the question is:

How long will his dynasty last?

They say that Pacquiao has reached his peak. If so, saturation point seems inevitable.

Although the boxing world isn’t quite ready to relinquish Pacquiao as the world’s best pugilist, chinks and rust may be starting to appear in his armor.

With Juan Manuel Marquez consistently earning sensational victories and Shane Mosley successfully moving back the hands of time, it seems that the arguments as to who is the current best prizefighter are blossoming like French Tulips in spring.

In order to silence the critics, Pacquiao must do one thing:

He must face a much tougher challenge in Ricky Hatton, and he must win impressively, as other elite fighters are challenging for his crown.

Kobe Bryant: The Dilemma of a Lonely Hunter

Amidst the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, one man strives to discover the true nature of his existence—at least in a basketball sense.

Kobe Bean Bryant, arguably the best basketball player to ever live, still is wary in proving himself worthy of the prophecy the basketball-viewing public had laid on him.

The critique's eye had been very keen on him, waiting for that one mistake that'll ruin his godlike persona.

He was closely scrutinized and criticized for his split with long-time hardcourt partner Shaquille O'Neal and for his feud with Phil Jackson.

His reputation was badly damaged by the sexual allegations charged against him.

It was often said that he cannot win a championship without O'Neal.

He was labeled as selfish, ego-centered, a ball-hog, and "uncoachable," among others.

When he performed brilliantly it was human. On the other hand, when he performed mediocre it was unforgivable.

Above all, he remained silent.

Hence, he continued to do what he is supposed to do. He won games and in the process winning the heart of legions of supporters.

Last year, he almost won it all. He was named NBA MVP. He played in the NBA Finals for the first time since 2004. But, then again, he came up short in winning his fourth championship ring.

This year may unveil a different storyline.

The lonely hunter in Kobe Bryant might find what he is long searching for.

He has played outstanding basketball all year long. He made his teammates look better and finally, he discover the true epitome of teamwork.

He was the key to the Lakers success.

Although this may not be his typical MVP season however this could play out as his typical prophecy-fulfilling season.

With the help of his talent-laden crew, he might prove critics wrong and eventually claim what is rightfully his.

At the end of the day, the bigger trophy is always given on the month of June.

Still, the dilemma and pressure to perform at a superb level is high but there ain't no stopping Kobe once he fired on all cylinders.

Not now, not never.

Through all those years, the lonely hunter Kobe Bryant might end his quest and feast on a game well-deserved for.

Only time can tell.

LeBron James and the Cavaliers Quest for Basketball Supremacy

LeBron James was the turning point of a struggling franchise, the last great hope of a city impatient in winning it's first Larry O'Brien trophy.

He promised to put the Cleveland Cavaliers at the higher echelon of basketball, and to his promise, he did not disappoint.

Over the course of six years he gave the Forest city a trip to the NBA finals, a conference title, a division title, and splendid performances that's sure to be remembered for years to come.

It's evident that his arrival changed the whole culture of the team.

This year, "King James" led the Cavaliers to an unprecedented 66 win season (could easily reach 67).

He is a statistical monster, averaging 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 7.2 assists, almost two steals, and a block per outing.

Oscar Robertson-like numbers, perhaps. Numbers fit for a king.

Still, his biggest contribution is not those statistical numbers, rather his biggest contribution is his desire to perform ciento por ciento.

He is determined to be the best. His enthusiasm and his winning attitude are contagious.

He doesn't only make his teammates better. He make his teammates believe they are better.

Anderson Varejao has been playing his best NBA season.

Mo Williams has been playing his role with added intensity.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas, at 34 years of age, has been playing with so much enthusiasm.

In the last month or so, the Cavaliers realized that they have the best record in the NBA. Much more, the best record in franchise history.

They just don't believe they can win, rather they believe they will win.

When all of that aptitude mixes together with King James' natural talent, the Cavaliers became a dangerous threat for any opponent that'll come their way.

They are now firing on all cylinders. They'll clash with the Philadelphia 76ers tonight and I don't expect much trouble.

On paper, and with what they have done the past five-and-a-half months, the championship seems inevitable; nevertheless, basketball isn't played on paper, nor is success measured by past endeavours.

The Forest city can only hope the best for their young team in search of basketball supremacy.

Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton Fantasy: A Fight For The Ages (Part 3 Of 3)

Amidst the cheers, roars and chants. I could hear both Pacquiao and Hatton's breathing. They're both breathing hard as if it's coming from a profound source within them.

Perhaps Pacquiao was breathing heavily for the 95 million inhabitants of the Philippine archipelago and Hatton breathing for the 60 million people of Great Britain.

The bell rang in commencement of round five.

Hatton goes up fighting. Fierce and focused, Hatton lands a couple of shots but Pacquiao answers back with a vicious assault.

Hatton starts to chase Pacquiao. He's all over the ring, but Pacquiao does not succumb to Hatton's tremendous pressure. He weaved in and out of trouble. Ducking, evading and countering each and every Hatton attack.

Pacquiao was starting to control the fight. He's operating, like a surgeon, connecting on odd and difficult angles.

The British crowd was immobilized and stunned while the Filipino crowd was cheering on like nuts.

The whole scenario continues up to round nine. At that point, it seems evident that Pacquiao was ahead on points, as he won the last five rounds.

Hatton looked more like a butcher covered with blood while Pacquiao although has cuts on his left eye amazingly looks fresh.

Round 10, started slow but as soon as Pacquiao landed a brutal left hook the fight progressed. Hatton although bloodied continued to be the aggressor.

Alas! He caught Pacquiao with a powerful right to the body that sends him down on his knees.

"The first knockdown of the fight!" I could barely hear Larry Merchants voice.

It was the first time that Pacquiao has been knocked down since 2003. He's dizzy but just like a wounded tiger he stood up and tried hard to conceal the fact that he was hurt.

But it was clear. He was badly hurt.

Hatton starts to jab. Pacquiao looking annoyed returned fire with a wide and wild right hook that Hatton easily evade. The outbalance Pacquiao was again caught by a thundering uppercut from Hatton.

"Down goes Pacquiao for the second time!" Merchant said.

Pacquiao stood up but looked like an easy prey for the Hitman.

On the other hand Hatton looks determined to finish off the Pacman.

Halfway of round 10. Hatton goes forward just like a mad punching machine. He's now firing on all cylinders.

"Right for Hatton, Left for Hatton, Pacquiao misses badly, Hatton counters with a big uppercut, Pacquiao's almost finished"

Pacquiao was saved by the bell.

At this moment, I spilled my beer all over my shirt. I am amazed of the sudden turn of events.

I could see Juan Manuel Marquez smiling and laughing more like a hyena.

The ring physician looked at the cuts and bruises of both fighters hence he allowed the fight to continue.

"Start of round 11, This is a fight that will surely be remembered for years to come" Merchant added.

Hatton on the offensive continuously applying pressure. Pacquiao displays his brilliant footwork. Hatton seems impatient and keeps moving forward while Pacquiao scoring on jabs that doesn't seem to bother Hatton.

They met at the center of the ring. Pacquiao land a heavy right to the body and followed it up with an uppercut straight to Hatton's chin. Hatton goes down.

The Filipinos jump on their feet. It's getting wild and wild at the MGM Grand.

This fight is crazy I thought.

Hatton goes up and the action resumed. They were trading bombs. No, not just bombs. They were trading atomic bombs.

Left for Hatton, Right for Pacquiao, Uppercut for Hatton, Bodyshot for Pacquiao..

There were moments when Pacquiao was about to go down but there were also instances when Hatton was about to kiss the canvass.

They aren't giving their 100%, they're giving their 200%. Physically speaking they are both finished but pride and dignity kept them standing on their feet.

It's not anymore about the guaranteed 11 million euros. It's about who is the better man.

Two ring gladiators too proud to go down. No one's gonna say "No Mas." No one's gonna quit on his tool. No one's gonna throw in the white towel.

Round 12 is on it's way.. The championship round..

More than a name
Or a face in the crowd
I know this is the time
This is the time...

Suddenly my phone rang. Yup my ringing tone is David Cook's "Time of my life." Anyway stupid cellphone it ruined my daydreaming.

Well, I guess there's only one way to find out what will happen come May 2nd.

There's gonna be stars storming Vegas, there's gonna be a classic duel of two stars but sadly, a star will eventually go down.

Angel Cabrera: Unlikely Master; Worthy Champion

"First, they ignore you. Second, they laugh at you. Third, they fight you. Finally, you win." - Mahatma Gandhi

Angel Cabrera may not have the aura and prestige of a Tiger Woods, or the charisma and mystique of a Phil Mickelson, but one thing's for sure: this Angel has an angelic stroke.

That kind of angelic stroke, he showed Sunday at the Augusta National.

Cabrera, all throughout his career, was overshadowed by bigger and better names in the golfing world. Still, he never lost hope and never did give up on his dreams.

We all have that special moment when the stars in the skies will align magnificently to perfectly turn the tides to our favor.

Indeed, the stars aligned for Cabrera.

Cabrera, with Lady Luck's help, beat the odds and displayed perhaps the performance of his life in winning the Masters Tournament and taking home the coveted green jacket, and most spectacularly, going home $1,350,000 richer.

In a stunning outcome, Cabrera outlasted Kenny Perry, Chad Campbell, Woods, Mickelson and the 91 other world class golfers en route to winning his second major tournament.

Campbell the 69th ranked player in the world, also become the lowest-ranked player to win the prestigious Masters Tournament.

“A lot of magical things happen. It’s simply the Masters,” Cabrera said through an interpreter.

Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton Fantasy: A Brawl to Remember (Part 2 of 3)

A burst of applause soon followed the fighter introductions.

It was the moment I and the rest of the boxing-viewing public was waiting for.

The bell rang to announce the start of the first round. At this moment the crowd was all fired up. The sound pressure is that of a Jet engine and could reach a nerve-racking 150 dB.

Pacquiao and Hatton both looked great. Their bodies were in the best shape of their lives. They started the round by sizing up each other. Fearlessly looking at each other's eyes.

After a moment Hatton draws first blood catching Pacquiao with a hard right to the latter's face to the delight of the drunkards, I mean Brits. I swear, I saw Her Royal Highness went up on her feet and cheered like a madman.

Pacquiao saw "red" but remained calm and composed. He worked on his jab and danced brilliantly. He caught Hatton with a big left hook, but the pride of Manchester didn't look affected by any rate.

Hatton answered back with a ferocious one-two. Pacquiao gave back the favor with a picture-perfect counter punch.

The crowd is on its feet.

Another uppercut from Hatton momentarily stunned Pacquiao. Pacquiao answered back with a barrage of punches that seemingly hurt Hatton, and another Pacquiao assault ended the first round.

I could hear the crowd chanting, "MANNY, MANNY, MANNY"

It was a very close opening round.

At the break, I heard a guy from the bleachers shout,

"Go Hatton!!, I bet the whole country of Canada so I'm counting on you"

And another guy shouted,

"Go Pacquiao!! I love all the beautiful Filipina girls. I'm single and still available."

It turned out that it was two of my Bleacher Report buddies shouting their lungs out.

I thought "Is he really single? or just available but not single?"

Well, enough of the nonsense thoughts.

Round two started and the fight or should I say "War" picked off to where it left. Both Pacquiao and Hatton were trading bombs at the center of the prizefighting arena.

Everytime Hatton beat the hell out Pacquiao, Pacquiao always came back and beat the hell out Hatton.

Everytime Pacquiao landed a brutal uppercut, Hatton immediately answered back with thundering blows.

The crowd is still in awe.

I wonder "Why do they ever put seats on the MGM Grand, people don't even use it"

The early rounds were like pages taken from the book of the historic Marvin Hagler-Tommy Hearns encounter.

It was an instant classic.

The Mediterranians, the Etruscans, and the Greeks, early practitioners of boxing pugilism must have been very proud to see these two ring gladiators in a fierce bout not for money, not for fame but a fight for one's dignity.

In fact, It could also be, a fight for one's life..

The same trend continues up to round four. Both men now covered with blood, both men sucking wind and both men still eager to outlast each other..

To be continued..

Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton Fantasy: Starstruck (Part 1 Of 3)

A record breaking 18,000 people filled the MGM Grand and a hundred thousand more stormed the deserts of Las Vegas in anticipation of the much-awaited Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton showdown.

In spite of the tough times experienced all over the globe due to the financial crisis, the bout still overachieved and established itself as the most watched boxing-PPV event in America.

It recorded an incredible 2.5 million PPV buys that surpassed the Dela Hoya-Mayweather mega fight of 2007.

It was a cold night in Sin City, although you can feel the warmth brought about by the excitement and jitters that encompasses what is bound to happen.

Celebrities and personalities in attendance also gave an added glamour to the already glamorous event.

I was fortunate to be seated at ring side. On my left was the Queen of England, her royal highness, Elizabeth II. On my right was the hot Paris Hilton.

Above me I could hear Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie whispering sweet nothings to each other.

From my seat I also saw Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Sylvester Stallone, Britney Spears, George Bush, King J, Stoker Dafire, EJ Claudio and some other guys who are either drunk or sleepy.

I guess they're drunk.

I was munching my popcorn and enjoying my San Miguel Beer when suddenly the lights turned off.

It's time for the entourage.

Manny Pacquiao goes first the crowd was on it's feet. He walks towards the ring to the tune of "Three Stars and a Sun." Pacquiao was accompanied by WWE superstar Undertaker and several big, fat, Filipino politicians whom I dare not to mention.

Then goes Ricky Hatton who probably had learned a thing or two from Naseem Hamed. He walk towards the ring in a Catwalk fashion, wearing the classic "Fatton" gear. He was accompanied by Christiano Ronaldo, Joey Barton, and some other Footballers. The Brits goes nuts.

The singing of the national anthems follows.

It saw splendid performances from Martin Nieverra, Sir Tom Jones, and David Cook who sung the "Lupang Hinirang," "God Save The Queen," and "Star Spangled Banner," respectively.

Michael Buffer holds the mic and the world-famous words followed.

"..... To the thousands in attendance and to the millions watching around the world, Let's get ready to rumble"

The Crowd roars!!

To be continued...
