UGA Offers Head Basketball Position to Anderson, Now Waits

Since the end of January when Georgia lost to Florida unceremoniously, things have been really quiet for Georgia basketball. Sure, the team made a couple headlines later in the season, most notably with a win over Florida in Athens and one over Kentucky in Lexington; and then after the season when two scholarship players decided to leave the team. But for the most part the bulk of the hoops season for Georgia fans came and went as quiet as a mouse.

All of that changed this morning as news broke that UGA AD Damon Evans has offered Mike Anderson of Missouri the head basketball coach position. Reportedly, the offer is a multi-year deal that is for more than $2 million a season.

Mike Anderson is coming off of an Elite 8 appearance and Evans is coming off a chance to enter in negotiations with highly regarded Anthony Grant of VCU. It turned out Evans had a bigger hand to play and refused to sit down at the table until some of the pretty ones had finished dancing.

Now Georgia fans and likely Anderson himself will wait to see what happens in Lexington and Memphis. Anderson is widely thought to be a candidate at Memphis should John Calipari accept Kentucky's offer which came Monday.

Anderson spent 17 seasons under Nolan Richardson's tutelage at Arkansas before accepting a head position at University of Alabama-Birmingham where he won nearly 70% of his games and took his teams to post-season play every season.

Following the '05-'06 season, Anderson accepted the head coaching position at the University of Missouri where he continued his winning tradition despite inheriting a program that had withered into a shadow of itself towards the end of Quin Snyder's tenure. In all, Anderson led Missouri to a 65-35 record during his three year term, highlighted by this year's 31-7 team that defeated Memphis in the West Region to earn a trip to the Elite 8.

Somewhere Between Len Bias and A-Fraud

Steroids.

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that word this month, I'd buy myself and my readers lunch today.

I have little interest in professional sports. I stand on pro hockey ice long enough to get that really cold burning feeling between the months of January and April. I tune into the NFL on Sunday afternoons when my wife allows it. I watch the Masters, US and British Open golf championships. I tune into Wimbledon.

That's pretty much the extent of my curiosity in paid athletes. So why do I care about how many shots of andro Mark McGwire took? Why does it interest me that Bonds may have used the cream?

Len Bias became the face of the nation's cocaine problem back in the mid-80s when he collapsed after a night of partying. The tragedy came just 48 hours after Bias became the fresh face of the Boston Celtics franchise, the second overall pick in the 1986 NBA draft.

Alex Rodriguez has recently become the new face of MLB's steroid and performance enhancing drug epidemic. Suddenly Pete Rose's transgressions dosen't seem so heinous.

I work with kids daily that look up to these guys and others just as athletically gifted. How many of us would have been heartbroken as kids had we learned that situps and pushups weren't the cause for Herschel's physique? How many others would have chosen a similar shortcut?

I see kids daily that wear the jerseys of NBA stars who regularly and casually use substances the league doesn't even test for - bad message that could result in fatal consequences for teens who don't get an opposing viewpoint from an adult in the home.

Another reason I'm concerned about this subject is because I spend a lot of time actively participating in and following UGA Athletics. So it got me curious about NCAA rules and regulations. How are performance enhancing drugs policed? Are Teabags' muscles real? Is it possible Mount Cody could've substituted a stack of biscuits for stacked 'roids?

I didn't get far in my research before I found two sites that especially caught my wandering eye. First I thumbed through the NCAA's publication on their drug testing program. It was informative, but I think I pretty much knew that drinking a six-pack of PBR before competing in riflery was frowned upon.

The AJC article published last May by Alan Judd however told me more about UGA's stance on drug use, whether they're 'roids or the street variety. Suffice it to say that the UGA athletic office handles offenders with a firmer hand than Tech's. I'm all for an offender getting counseling, but I prefer my alma mater's athletic office to take a more direct approach in punishment as well.

If I send my kid to run track and field at UGA and she gets caught with chemicals in her system, as her father I'll handle the counseling side of things (thank you very much) as that is more of a personal, family decision. Her coach should be the one to remove her from competition.

Though, the reality may be, that getting caught is a rare occurrence. The NCAA randomly tests during post-season play. It is generally up to schools to police on their own. That leaves a lot of variance.

In the aftermath of Len Bias' death, the University of Maryland completely overhauled it's drug testing program and student-athlete support framework. That was a reaction to the loss of a native son. Too late to save Bais' life, but hopefully in time to prevent other tragedies.

We cheer the players that wear the red and black each Saturday in the fall and beyond that in other sports. If you're like me you even stick your nose up when leagues like MLB create a bed of substance use that they must lie in.

It's in times like these that wins on the competitive field take a backseat to the safety of the student-athletes that perform for our pleasure. It is in times like these that I am proud to have great leaders in the halls and offices of our athletic department. Andy Landers, Suzanne Yoculan, Mark Richt, Manny Diaz....the list goes on. It even included Dennis Felton.

I watched on National Signing Day as Coach Richt talked about the type of young man they look for when they recruit players. This is a man who has taken a lot of undue criticism for the decisions some of his players have made. He talked about character, discipline, and leadership. When pressed about times in the 40, he and Willie Martinez all but scoffed.

Forty times are unscientific, they are as susceptible to a faulty stop watch usage as they are to being run downhill.

But I bet you these coaches can tell well before the ink is dry if the kid has character and/or potential for leadership roles on their respective team. Certainly they know before they leave the kid's high school or living room whether or not they can help mold the young athlete into a good young man or woman.

The word leadership has been batted around casually and formally related to the football team as of late. Many fans have chimed in. Others have openly wondered why is leadership important? Why not just sign the kids who can play the best, run the fastest, and then worry about molding them into leaders later?

It ain't that easy. There are many styles to leadership, each born within the person and developed through time and experiences. Pollack lead through his actions on the practice field and his non-stop motor 'tween the hedges. Greene had the command and attention in the huddle to bring out the best in the other ten Georgia jerseys on the field.

Those are just a couple of examples. Do a 180 and you'll find a couple more. Like Quincy Carter or Mike Mercer. Great players that may not have had the structure or self-discipline to maximize their potential while in Athens.

So while we are quick to embrace the leadership we see on the field, we should be just as quick to lock onto the leadership that happens off of it.

I once listened in as a very wise man spoke to a gathering of teenagers closing in on graduation. He told the story of three teens who lost their lives from sniffing a foreign substance..."huffing" I believe it is called. He mused that the conversation likely went something like this:

Teen 1 - "Let's sniff this."

Teen 2 - "It'll be cool."

Teen 3 - The last to speak had the opportunity to turn the entire evening around, instead chose to say, "Ok." Their bodies were discovered in a car early the next morning, well after their last breath had been taken.

What would have happened had that third teen been truthful and explained how dumb it sounded? What if he had laughed and said "no thanks!" as he got out of the car they were parked in?

At least one life would have been saved. Maybe as many as three.

P.B. Fitzwater once defined character as "the sum and total of a person's choices."

Caught in a situation like the one above, the student-athlete that possesses character may just be the person to turn a hazardous situation around by saying "no thanks." They may just decide to get out of the car.

The time we spend barking for our players is a mere fraction of the time they spend on UGA's campus. Take a moment to feel proud that our coaches take the time to try and find players who are not just the right fit physically, but also personally.

And when the student-athlete walks across the stage to take that piece of paper...bark even louder.

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: Heavy Cloud...but No Rain

(Cue live feed from Coral Gables...and powerful music reaching a crescendo...) Hurricane Willie Watch! Day Four.

...chirp...chirp...chirp!...

And in other news...

Matt Stafford was the heir apparent at QB from the time he stepped on campus in January '06. It took him the next nine months to get some national play. It may have taken Joe Cox significantly longer to cement himself at the top of the depth chart, but he'll be televised on ESPN much sooner, as opposed to later.

Marc Weiszer of the Banner-Herald is reporting that the mutha of all things sports will televise the annual spring clash between red and black on April 11th, time TBD.

And I know what you're saying, "I've seen King carry the ball and I've seen Samuel. Who else will be competing for carries this fall?" Dontavious Jackson and Carlton Thomas have officially taken off the red-shirts, but there is another stud that may figure into the mix.

Bubba 'n Earl have an in-depth look at a soon to be Dawg signee, Washaun Ealey. He may not avoid the red-shirt this fall. Then again, Coach Mark Richt may be more hesitant "post-Knowshon" to sit a hot phenom like this kid.

(Cue live feed from Butts-Mehre...and powerful music reaching a crescendo...) Hurricane Willie Watch!! Day Four.

Bernie, this is BDB central. Can you hear any phones ringing? No, just cars starting in the parking lot as coaches head out on recruiting visits. Have you seen Coach Martinez with a resume in hand? Or maybe a suitcase? Ahh, no. I did see him with a newspaper though. Really! Yeah, it was the Miami Herald. Did he look intrigued, puzzled...? No, he was laughing.

Okay, well...speaking of recruiting...

Recruitin' Snacks

According to Jamie Newberg, Georgia is the leader for Marlon Brown, the coveted receiver out of Memphis. However, Tennessee and Coach Kiffy get his last visit. The Volunteer head coach is expected to have finished eating his vegetables by then. So he should be able to go outside and play.

Greg Reid went to every Florida home game the last two years and was their original commitment for this class. Young talent on the depth chart hurt them for the young DB who wants to play early, not to mention an Urban Meyer tirade. FSU is now the leader. This kid's drama is as thick as Urban's ego.

Jarvis Jones, the state's top uncommitted prospect will entertain CMR on Wednesday in his living room. The 6' 4" 220-plus pound linebacker is also considering Florida, LSU, Texas and USC (the real one, not the wannabe).

And Coach Richt plans to make a special visit to Lagrange late spring should future signee Chris Burnette finish as Troup County's valedictorian. Burnette (again...no relation to your humble blawgger) is the current leader and chose not to enroll early at UGA to pursue the honor. Richt has said if he makes it, he will attend the graduation ceremony to hear the speech. And Coach said he was too busy to come to my six year old's Hannah Montana birthday party...for shame!

Shout Outs

Randy Shannon. Willing to do whatever it takes to bring the U back to national prominence, including coaching the defense himself. Vegas would give us an over/under on the number of months he'll still be employed, but it's really inconsequential.

Obama. (There! I said it...you happy?)

Terrance Moore, AJC columnist for giving us this warning before it was too late. I was all for the Falcons signing the loser until I read your article. I'm sure Blank thanks his lucky stars that you are there...a voice of abject lunacy amidst a storm of undeniable reality.

Mackie for giving the blogosphere a heads up on some movies we may or may not have heard of that some old guys decided are award worthy. Based on his analysis, my vote's for Slumdog.

And speaking of Oscar...the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for sticking with their historical and illogical thought processes and refusing to offer The Dark Knight as a possibility for Best Picture. I appreciate the reminder for why I don't watch your overblown, useless ceremony.

Trivia this week is brought to you by the Weather Channel—We've seen a lot of crazy stuff, but never a hurricane in January.

The format's a little different this week, but given the emphasis on weather...appropriate. The Senior Bowl is tomorrow and the Dawgs have two participants this year in MoMass and Corvey Irvin. How many catches will Massaquoi have and how many tackles will Irvin have? Participant that forecasts the closest receives a University of Miami poncho. And sorry emailers...only comments accepted this week.

Have a great weekend reader. And pray for me tomorrow afternoon. I'll be knee deep in 1st graders dressed up like semi-pubescent, quasi-pop stars.

I'll pass on the cake. Honey...where's the bourbon?

Willie Martinez to Stay at Georgia

First of all, I have no direct facts to support that headline. But in my 30 (ahem!) years, I have only been wrong about 10 things.

Ever. Stand in line, Dawg fans...for your cold shower in reality.

While we try to hear the phone ring in Butts-Mehre today from a call way down in Coral Gables, let's take a big step back.

Watch your step! Don't trip over my desperate Visor research. It's a big mutha!

There you go. OK...

The only person to mention Willie Martinez's name in relation to the defensive coordinator's position at Miami is a Miami Herald writer. When prompted for names, Hurricane head coach Randy Shannon gave no names, other than his own, as a possibility.

How'd that feel? Here's another wave coming...

If that phone does indeed ring and ol' Coach Willie gets an offer covered in ibis feathers, there are three people in control of the situation at that point. The captain, engineer, and cruise director on a luxury cruise ship, if you will.

You and I...we're more like Ed and Ethel Peters from Cincinnati. Involved, but on the periphery; out on the shuffleboard deck, not inside the control room.

Coach Mark Richt wants to keep Martinez. Rest assured he will make a play to do so. He went to bat for Garner and Searels, and they got paid! He'll do the same for his friend and defensive coordinator.

Enter Damon Evans, UGA Athletic Director.

Right now, the only coach assured of more than one year's salary from UGA is Richt himself. Miami may offer two to Martinez if they really want him, subsequently backing Evans into a corner.

Evans could counter and keep his head coach happy. You know...show some support. He could also stand pat and placate the die-hard fan from Marietta who knows all there is to know about running defenses, and Willie needs to go, goshdarnit!

And either way, ol' Coach Willie could decide he's happy in Athens, where even a one-year contract is more secure than a two-year one under Randy Shannon. Heck, even more secure than a 10-year contract.

So I guess Hurricane Willie could be quickly downgraded to a tropical depression.

Question is, would you still enjoy the offseason cruise...?

If Willie is contacted, interviewed for, and offered the position that Randy Shannon needs to fill, I would not be surprised. However, if all that happens and he accepts the position, then that would be just the 11th thing I've been wrong about in my life.

The others, you ask?

I was 12 years old and told my neighbor I could ride my 10-speed down suicide hill. I only made it halfway.

Back in '86 when I told my younger brother he could not eat that plate full of jalapenos without drinking any water until the next morning. He was eight, stubborn, and REALLY wanted that broken microscope.

The answer to the fourth question on Coach Watson's pop quiz in 12th grade was actually, "C. Papua New Guinea."

That one night in February my junior year at UGA when I had a term paper due at 7:50am the next morning and there was a 20 percent chance of snow overnight. I rolled the dice on snow and canceled classes. Came up craps!

The next night downtown, when I said we should order ONE more pitcher. (OK, this one could be applied more than once...but it's my blawg—sue me.)

When Al Gore said he invented the Internet and I believed him. Later learned it was Tim Tebow.

In August of 2000 at the annual Atlanta Bulldog Club meeting when Donnan made his guaran-damn-tee and exclaimed, "We're gonna get it done!"...and I clapped.

That one time when I told Jennifer that I had indeed locked the front door. Oops! Sorry Honey.

The time I agreed to go to the Fox and see Cats. (Honey...we're even.)

And that one time I told Nama it was ON like Donkey Kong with Wii Olympics. Even holding nunchuks, I am no Michael Phelps.

So there you have it. Argue with me if you think there'll be an 11th anytime soon. But I say the dominoes fall short on this one.

Willie's a Dawg!

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: Landers, Leadership and (unexpected) Landings

Bernie is a believer in Joe Cox. We haven't seen the fifth year senior start but one game. I'm proud to say I was in Oxford for that one start, but remember it mostly as an ugly game with a tremendous tailgate.

All things considered, ol' Joe is really only known in Athens for the winning TD against Colorado in '06 and being the red-headed backup to Matthew Stafford. In fact, it's conceivable that there are some Dawg fans out there that had to google Cox after Stafford announced and coaches Bobo and Richt started their ringing endorsement for the Charlotte native.

This kid's a winner. No, really. He hasn't lost a game since he was learning how to drive. He may not have the arm strength of our previous starter, but he's not going to be the type of signal caller that fails to manage games. He'll put us in position to win.

But the main reason I'm a believer in 14 is a reason that is getting a lot of play since Stafford announced his decision last Wednesday—Cox is a leader.

Now before you start to make an ass of you and me, let's get this straight—Stafford is a leader. He did it in red and black every game with his arm.

I'm sick and tired of all the blowhards that label him either as a loser because he didn't bring us a championship or disloyal because he didn't finish out his eligibility.

If you're bitter about these guys leaving, get a life! They're Dawgs. 'Nuf said.

So Stafford lead with his performances. Cox however, is a leader with his voice. For a guy to be a backup on the depth chart and still have the respect of the players speaks volumes.

That should translate into leadership through his actions as well around Sept. 5th.

Quick Hits

For a run down on our starting QB, check out Bubba 'n Earl's very thorough run down.

Early entries into the NFL draft used to be non-existent. Just ask Herschel Walker.

If he doesn't answer the phone, read this John Underwood article published in March of 1982 after the Georgia tailback had finished his sophomore campaign. Great article.

And if you've read Walker's book "Breaking Free," Underwood's piece will seem eerily familiar; like a glimpse into a time when no one, not even Walker himself, knew what he was going through.

You want a playoff? SNL is rarely worth a tune in anymore (my humble opinion), but this is pretty funny. The W jokes toward the end are a little creepy from this guy, but it was worth the look-see. Maybe it'll convince you the BCS isn't so bad....

If you think Mark Sanchez will rise above Matt Stafford in the draft QB pecking order, think again. This season's stats may favor the USC Trojan, but Stafford showed in his three years he can handle adversity within the pocket. His blindside protectors this season alone dropped like flies.

Did anyone catch the (very) quick "tap" on the elbow Carroll gave Sanchez as he left the stage...before Sanchez addressed the media? Coach Carroll was pissed.

Rumblings from Athens that coach Willie Martinez got into quite the heated exchange with his safety after learning Wednesday of Reshad Jones' decision to turn pro.

Wonder if the phrases "arm tackle" and "second day pick" were hurled around.

Shout Outs

Captain Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger. His heroics in landing that airbus yesterday in the Hudson were astounding, even more so than his two sweeps of the plane to make sure his passengers had all unboarded.

Captain Sully, you sir are now in charge of our flight to Tulsa in September.

Andy Landers. 800 wins. Wow!

The NCAA says his victory total stands at 718 because of 82 wins at Roane State. I say take a bite of one of the coach's cigar stumps and give Landers and us Dawg fans a break. BTW—he was something insane like 34-1 against D1 schools while at RSCC.

Back at the number 800, Landers is the second fastest coach to reach the feat, behind some coach at Tennessee. And check out the GeorgiaDogs pic with the throw back to a time with the wide tie and before the slick backed hair. Well done coach. Here's to the next 800!

Teresa Edwards for making it to Athens for the momentous occasion. The four time Olympic Champ never forgets her roots.

And lastly, Reshad Jones. It always pays to make your grandparents happy. They helped raise you and in December you'll repay them with a college degree. That will be a moment worth more than millions of Benjamin's. Not just a hug, one of those big 'ol, grandmamma, back breaking hugs. Enjoy!

To wrap up, I know a lot of Dads venture into Bernie's cyber hole on occasion. And some of you have daughters...like me. True or not, here's hoping nothing like this ever happens to you gentlemen.

Trivia this week brought to you by the new AT&T, check out their unlimited text messaging plans. Satisfaction not guaranteed for fathers of daughters on class trips near a beach...where a fraternity is having their annual Beach and Beer Retreat. The Lady Dawgs recently moved into a new 3400 sq ft locker room area that includes a theater style meeting room and lounge area. Which team utilized the space from 1964-1987 as their locker room? Reader with the winning comment gets a shotgun to use to protect their daughter.

Enjoy the weekend reader(s). I know it's cold. But not as cold as the shoulder Mark Sanchez got yesterday.

Reshad Jones Makes Final Decision: He's Still a Bulldog

Reshad Jones has come back full circle and will stay for the 2009 season. Brett Jensen writes that the Georgia safety told members of the coaching staff this morning that he had changed his mind and wanted to return for his redshirt junior season.

You had to at least wonder when the confirmation of his leaving didn't break late this morning that maybe defensive coordinator Willie Martinez and/or head coach Mark Richt grabbed his ear after a good night's sleep.

Jones was one of the members of the highly touted 2006 class that included fellow five star recruit Matthew Stafford and was the top rated safety in the nation. A product of Booker T. Washington, the state of Georgia's top recruit chose Georgia over a slew of other offers after being recruited heavily by Rodney Garner.

Although Jones has yet to have the breakout season many were expecting back in February of '06 when he signed his LOI, few doubt the safety's potential. This season he was second on the team in tackles after starting 12 of 13 games.

Many fans have grown impatient with his inconsistent play, but he also led the team in interceptions this season. If Rennie Curran was dotting the "i" in Columbia by forcing the Mike Davis fumble, Jones was crossing the "t" when he sealed the victory by means of his interception on the Gamecocks' last drive.

Assuming the starting safety's heart is behind this final decision, it is good news for Dawg fans and surely has coaches around Butts-Mehre breathing a sigh of relief.

It is just a matter of time before the production follows the potential. And this Dawg Blawgger can't wait...

Go Dawgs!

Atlanta Thrashers Have Become One

...miserable franchise.

The Atlanta Thrashers are at the midway point of their ninth season in the National Hockey League. The Public Relations department wants the Atlanta fans to "Become One."

But after a decade of action on the ice of Philips Arena, what exactly have the Thrashers "become"? One General Manager, three coaches, 252 wins in ten years...at least they went undefeated during the strike season!

Yes, things are icy cold in the land of Atlanta professional hockey. And in a sport where cold is usually good...14 wins in 43 games is definitely short of good.

This slideshow will explore the season and the franchise for all of its glory in a league where the Atlanta Thrashers are a back page story.

Here are the Atlanta Thrashers Mid-Season Awards.

Georgia Safety Reshad Jones Leaving Campus As Well

As the Bulldog Turns...

Last time we left this soap opera, the quarterback and the running back had announced they were leaving town. A junior cornerback soon followed suit.

Now, Georgia safety Reshad Jones is giving out signals that he, too, will be leaving campus for the NFL draft.

"I'm probably leaning toward leaving, but I'll know for sure in the morning," Jones said.

This came after Sports Information Director Claude Felton said Tuesday that Georgia's safety was planning on returning.

Hard to think that Jones' draft advisory report changed overnight, but evidently Jones' mind did.

Jones said he feels like the time is right for him to end his collegiate career, however his coaches evidently disagree. Jones is projected by most mock drafts to be a second-day pick for an NFL team.

If Jones does indeed clean out his locker at UGA's Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, that would make two offensive and two defensive defections.

Just Tuesday, defensive back Asher Allen surprised Dawg fans with his announcement that he was forgoing his senior season. And last wee,k both Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno made their decisions to opt for the draft public.

Defensive tackles Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins have both stated that they were returning next season.

Surely their phones will be ringing late into the night for assurances that they are still in Athens.

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: Curses and NFL Purses

...and other miscellaneous musings.

Coach Mark Richt and staff have picked up three extra scholarships in the last week. Stafford, Moreno...and now Asher Allen has decided to attend the NFL combines this winter.

Most of us were not surprised when Stafford and Moreno cleaned out their lockers last week. But shame on me for having Asher all but ink'd in as returning for the 2009 campaign.

Honestly, this really hurts the Dawgs' defense. I realize that Stafford and Moreno were star players and accounted for just south of 90 percent of the offense this past season. And I also realize that replacing them will not be easy.

But for my money, losing Asher is a much bigger hit to a team that needs defensive leaders returning. Allen is an experienced cover corner that subscribes to a very physical style of play.

His stats were down this season (only 44 tackles and no INTs), but he played the last five games with a broken hand. (Note: Allen had an INT against the reptiles, but a penalty negated it. What else?)

You only have to remember back to the Capital One Bowl to understand Allen's significance. Martinez used a lot of man coverage and the Spartans frequently threw in Allen's direction. Not sure why, they just did.

Allen finished with a team high nine tackles and also recorded his first sack of the season. MSU receivers had a hard time getting off the line cleanly against him. And Hoyer and Cousins had an even harder time completing passes against him.

Asher joins Ramarcus Brown and C.J. Byrd (both seniors) as departing players from the secondary. Assuming Bryan Evans stays at safety, there will be a lot of young, raw talent fighting for supremacy of the DB depth chart this spring.

We saw a lot of Brandon Boykin in Orlando. The coaches also speak highly of redshirt freshmenBaccari Rambo's athleticism and Makiri Pugh's talent. Asher himself likes Sanders Commings (appeared in three games, no stats).

With Shanahan being shown the door in Denver, maybe Champ can come back and use that last year of eligibility...?

Reshad Jones, Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins are on record as saying they are back next season. I guess that will become official after Thursday's deadline. No more surprises...right??

Today's Dose of Irony

John Kincade of 680 thefan discussed this last week and even presented it to Stafford on the air after the QBs press conference last Wednesday.

Ohh! The Irony...

Fifty years ago, the Detroit Lions traded away their all-star QB Bobby Layne after he finished the season on their '50's version of the Injured Reserve list. So upset as he left town for Pittsburgh he placed a curse on the franchise. He supposedly declared that for the next 50 years the Lions would claim no championships.

Since that day, the Lions have amassed the worst winning percentage in the NFL and have recorded just one post-season win. Oh! And they went o for 16 this season.

Is the curse over? Well...the 50 years are. The irony is that the Lions need a QB and have the first pick in the draft; the Dawgs' QB just declared himself available; and let's see...that's right! Stafford and Layne both graduated from the same high school, Highland Park.

If this ironic tidbit plays itself out, it could be the curse of Matt Stafford. The Lions put the awe in awful.

And Stafford didn't take the bait Kincade was casting. After all, the Lions could be the team to take Michael Vick off of Blank's hands once he finishes his Leavenworth vacation.

Class Act

You've all likely seen the ad in the Athens-Banner Herald that Knowshon paid for last week. It was a class act by a young man that hopefully left an ounce of that trademark energy in his UGA locker. In case you missed it, click HERE.

And Knowshon, if my humble blawg is ever graced by your eyes and you happen to read this...NO! Thank You!

Recruitin' Update

Greg Reid has narrowed his choices and is evidently not swayed any closer to choosing Athens by Asher's departure. The Lowndes star has narrowed his decision to Athens, Tallahassee or latecomer Tuscaloosa. He wrapped up a "great" visit to FSU this past weekend. Next is Bama before visiting the Classic City on the 30th.

With Branden Smith's commitment, Georgia has already landed one of the state's top defensive players. To land another top DB in Reid (that was once committed to the Meyer Machine) would once again help CMR and staff seal the border...and give the Dawgs a tandem at defensive back to be reckoned with.

There's no truth to the rumor that Coach Kiffy used a fake ID last weekend at the Knoxville gas 'n sip. The AP is reporting that Kiffy's wife bought him the wine coolers he was drinking at the Justin Timberlake concert.

Derrick Favors, arguably the nation's top round ball player projected to play center, will announce his decision tonight. UGA, Tech and NC State are the finalists. In Georgia's favor is Trey Tompkins, a former teammate of Favors. Not in the Dawgs' favor is a series of second half collapses, most notably Tech. Bernie's prediction: Favors re-teams with Tompkins this fall and saves Felton's job for at least another few months.

And this just in: Spurrier hasn't pulled a scholarship from a targeted player in nearly a week.

Sick Bay

Well wishes go out to Buck Belue. The formerDawg signal caller, turned 680 thefan radio jock has been diagnosed with Bell's Palsy.

He's expected to return to Kincade's side as soon as this afternoon. Bell's Palsy is a paralysis of the facial nerve and is not life threatening.

To pass along your own well wishes, here's Buck's Blog.

Site of the Week

For a good blend of Dawg news, video, cyber links, and other things Dawg, check out GeorgiaBulldog.com. BDB guarantees it's worth the trip.

Visitor of Note

BDB welcomes its first visitor from India. Not sure how long he or she stayed. But according to the report, if you Google "water things down," BDB has the fourth hit from the top. And it was a good one, too. I remember it fondly.

And lastly, congrats to Bryan McClendon. I think this is a great hire. CMR stands by his word in wanting Georgia blood and enthusiasm in his players and his staff.

There are rumblings about McClendon being a receiver coaching RBs and that being a position in transition with the absence of Moreno. I hear that.

And CMR could've gone out and lured some big name to Athens that may or may not have worked out. InMcClendon he had someone who is vested in all things red and black. I think he'll bring some energy and experience to the sideline. And will turn out to be a great recruiter as well.

Mat Drills start soon. Better go hit the gym BDB readers. Coach Van Halanger isn't going to accept your lame excuses with that orange cheese doodle dust around your mouth. Drop the remote...er...the mouse, and strap on the spandex.

Or maybe just a nice pair of sweats...

Bernie

Asher Allen to Follow Stafford and Moreno, Will Leave Georgia for NFL

Asher Allen has reportedly decided to leave UGA for NFL riches. TotalUga is reporting that Allen has told members of the coaching staff that his decision has been made, and he plans to pursue his professional career a year early.

If true, it creates a big hole in Georgia's secondary, arguably larger than the ones on offense created by the two departing offensive stars last week in Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno.

Not good news for Dawg fans. Or for a defense that struggled through the 2008 season.

The AJC's Tim Tucker reported earlier today that Georgia's junior cornerback was mulling over the decision to turn pro after requesting a projection from the NFL advisory board of his draft status.

Allen has been less than specific about what he needs to see from the board for him to forgo his senior season. But many mock drafts list him around the seventh-best defensive back should he decide to leave campus. The earliest it would seem he would go would be mid-second round.

Allen had a solid, yet unspectacular season in '08. But Coach Willie Martinez recently revealed that his cornerback played with a broken hand from the end of the LSU game through the end of the season in Orlando.

There is certainly talent behind Allen ready for the challenge, but it is talent as yet unproven.

SEC's Torch Still Burns Bright After Florida's BCS Championship Victory

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a Southeastern Conference football fan. I live and breathe it, in all of its glory.

Like most college football fans in the Southeast, I recognize the conference as the best. Others merely play out their games to see who should lose to the SEC champion.

It's pompous, I know, but it's how we roll.

From its grills outside the stadium to its gridiron fanfare, the SEC is simply superior.

I will also be honest that during bowl season, I root for just about any team playing against an SEC team. The exception is Georgia, as I have now given them enough money in tuition for my degrees to call myself a rabid Dawg.

Oh, and I also pull for any SEC team playing Georgia Tech. Uh...unless it's Florida.

If that ever happens I would just succumb to whatever is on my wife's to-do list. Because that game could only entertain me if it were played on the track of a NASCAR race.

No, maybe you misunderstood. Actually during a race...

Come to think of it, that might be the first time I watch an oval track with cars travelling at such ridiculous speeds that Rosco P. Coltrane's head would spin and his revolver would discharge Plaxstyle...

I digress.

A large number of SEC fans have this feeling of pride in their conference that somehow requires them to root for the teams that their own team competes against every season. The SEC is best and we need to pull for each other. We need to show the country how our boys play football.

Do we?

Is it really necessary and vital that Steve Spurrier has my support for his chickens to have any shot at beating a Hawkeye?

Bad example. Maybe Darth Visor actually did need my voice.

See, in my mind, pulling for Florida to win yet another national title only hurts my team's chances at it next year. Or the year beyond...or ever again!

That and it would likely make my head implode.

Let's face it, a Georgia fan pulling for a team of reptiles actually does NOT make the gators chomp harder. Tebow doesn't need me cheering heartily to defeat a team of Boomer Sooners.

That's what his cape is for.

Why exactly should I hope that South Carolina wins against Iowa when Georgia not only plays the Gamecocks each year, but recruits against their coaches along the same interstates? And does Bama forgetting that their season is 14 games long this year help the Dawgs' chances at securing a commitment, maybe even a signature of a 17-year-old?

Hard to say, but I'll take my chances. Go Utes!

So as this year's bowl season began, all of the attention was focused squarely on the Big 12. And it turns out there are actually 12 teams in the conference, unlike the Big Ten that actually has 11.

No wonder their teams can't win at football, they can't count to 11!

Yet again I stray...

Anyway, this attention was newsworthy because the SEC had won the previous two BCS Championships, but had taken some lumps from the media during the regular season. It seems Auburn, Tennessee and LSU had disappointed them.

Altogether now...Awww!

The Big 12 was sexy, high powered, offensive...and full of controversy. While Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma argued over who should play Florida (or Bama...remember they were that close) the SEC was going about their business.

Practicing. Scheming. Concocting new formations. Having dinner with agents. Come to think of it, maybe Andre Smith knew what was coming in the Sugar Bowl.

And while I was looking at the schedule of bowls and wondering how the SEC would manage just four wins, Rich Brooks had his coaches watching film. Bobby Johnson had his players practicing 45-yard field goal attempts that would erase 53 years of post season misery. Coach Nutt had his Rebels running some sprints.

Coach Fulmer ate another pie.

This all went on behind my back, therefore I picked my beloved conference to finish the post season at .500. And I smiled at the thought that they might do worse.

Now it's no wonder my bowl pool left me at the shallow end before Santa even returned to the North Pole. Not only did Brooks' Wildcats and Johnson's 'Dores win, so did the Rebels and even LSU. WAHOO!

While the national media was setting the stage for a ceremony in which college football's torch would be passed to the sexy new neighbor with the shiny new Heisman and the ever subjective tie-breaker system, the SEC was setting the table.

And cleaning their plates.

Even before Florida won (everybody with me..) ANOTHER national title last night, an argument could be made that the SEC still reigned supreme.

Now, in the words of our favorite Friend Joey Tribbiani, the point is moo.

Three pretty crystal footballs in three years. Six wins and two losses in the bowl season. And not one respectable coach fired in over a month.

The SEC is not back. It never left. The torch it carries is not petering out; it is burning brighter than ever.

Big 12, your case for supremacy has been dismissed. And not by some 1996 OJ Simpson trial judge in LA. Closer to one like Judge Jackie Glass in Las Vegas.

Oklahoma, Texas, others—you can ask for a retrial in August. But if Tebow and Sanchez return like they should, my vote would be for the Gators to defend their title(s) against the Men of Troy next January in Pasadena.

And this Dawg fan says "Go Trojans!"

Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno Leave UGA: Fans Savor Memories, Not Trophies

For college football fans, the ultimate experience for each of us is a national championship for our team.

To see players wearing the colors you cheer for every Saturday hold up ADT's crystallized football is the reason we get up early each Saturday to head to the tailgate. It is the reason we sit in a stadium filled with thousands of others like us, acting like raving lunatics.

Every victory over an archrival gets us excited for the fruits of our team's labor. Each win puts us a little closer to that moment our coach brushes away the confetti from his hair, wearing a shirt very similar to the one we are wearing (minus the gatorade stain), and addresses the national audience.

And each loss makes us rant about having to wait another year.

Today, Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno made official what Georgia fans had long suspected. They will continue their careers professionally. Stafford's last pass between the hedges has been thrown, Knowshon's last leap leapt from its hallowed turf.

Stafford and Moreno leave behind many wins and few losses. But Georgia fans are undoubtedly conflicted about the highlights of two incredible athletes and the one win they were expecting to relish when the two players stepped on campus three years ago.

Stafford's arm was well discussed before he even arrived in Athens. Most Dawg signees are much ballyhooed and evaluated at great lengths on message boards and over the company water coolers. But Stafford was different.

His size, talent, and big time arm have had him labeled as a future NFL No. 1 draft choice since before he graduated high school. Georgia fans couldn't wait until that talent translated into victories. Banners. Championships. Even confetti.

And for the victories, they didn't have to wait long.

Stafford was never really in danger of a redshirt. He started eight games as a freshman and played in all 13. By the time he helped engineer a dramatic comeback against Virgina Tech in the 2006 Chick-Fil-A Bowl, fans were sure they would soon be able to hold No. 7's name up there with the likes of Buck Belue, David Greene, and DJ Shockley.

All SEC Champions. All beloved in the hearts that bleed red and black.

Meanwhile Moreno was finishing his redshirt season and rumors were starting to circulate about his performances on the practice field. A scout team running back did what? The seniors are talking about who? Isn't he the kid that signed from up north somewhere?

But most fans were focused on the upcoming senior season for Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin, not to mention the recruitment of Caleb King. Surely this kid from Jersey would just push for some playing time—maybe hold the position warm until King developed into the next star tailback from Georgia.

So, while Moreno was making his Georgia coaches second guess the decision to redshirt him, fans were preparing for the next Worley, Hampton, Hearst, even Walker.

But by the end of the 2007 season opener against Oklahoma State, fans would have the same perspective, but on a different player.

From that game on there was an audible gasp in Sanford Stadium every time Moreno touched the ball. Tickets were scalped and seats were sat in just to catch a glimpse at what he might do next.

Moreno only started six games as a redshirt freshman, but he played in all 13. He gained 1,334 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. He broke defenders' ankles. He hustled, juked, and jived. He played as if each play were a gift to be made the most of and never to be taken for granted. In doing so, he endeared himself to the hearts of every Dawg fan.

In August of 2008, as No. 7 and No. 24 jerseys were flying off the racks around Athens and the Georgia Bulldogs were being speculated as the best team in the nation, injuries were quickly and indirectly becoming an issue for the team as a whole.

Left tackle Trinton Sturdivant went down during two-a-days with a bad knee. Defensive tackle Jeff Owens went down in the season's first few minutes.

In Sturdivant, suddenly Stafford's blindside insurance policy and Moreno's seal blocker was gone for the season. Although both stars enjoyed success individually during the season, the preseason expectations were grossly unfulfilled. Losses to Alabama and Florida had forced Georgia out of the driver's seat in the SEC bus.

Worse, a loss to in-state rival Georgia Tech had left fans bitter and wanting more, much more. The reality of a decision their star players would soon make was setting in and they felt the window of opportunity for crowns and glory was closing, if not closed.

Could Stafford leave with a losing record against hated Florida? Would Knowshon take his energy, enthusiasm, and highlights to some NFL team's field? Where was the crystal football, the SEC Championship appearances...the confetti?

On the other hand, could Stafford pass on a possible top pick in the NFL? Could Moreno use another season in the short "lifetime" of a running back as a collegiate player? Could they pass up millions of dollars...to go to classes?

At the end of the Capital One Bowl we gathered close to hear Stafford accept the bowl's MVP trophy. With bated breath we listened intently, hoping that with the swell of emotions at the end of the season the young man would tell his fans he wasn't done at Georgia. We all chanted "One more year!" as if our desires could prompt a momentary loss of reason.

He took the microphone, but was working off of a different playbook. We wanted him to audible, but he stuck to the play.

On the first of this month we had a chance to watch the first tailback to gain over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons since Herschel Walker play another game in silver britches. With each yard Moreno gained we inched closer to the edge of our seats. With each signature sprint back to the huddle we smiled a little wider, as if to hide the anxiety about what we might be witnessing.

Six days later the two stars gave us their word. They made it official. Their time on campus was over. They were prepared to take the next step.

Did they, along with their fans, regret the opportunities missed?

Absolutely.

Was it a difficult decision given careful thought?

Without question, yes.

But when you have an opportunity to play a game you love and get paid handsomely for it, the choice is made easier. As nice as it would be to finish what they started three years ago, come back and lead their team to more victories, provide fans with more statistics to pore over, and give YouTube junkies more sick moves to watch repeatedly—the lure of another challenge awaits.

Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno leave Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall with no more SEC Trophies than there were in 2006. But while many fans will say that this tarnishes their exemplary career and legacy, neither can be judged as any less of a player.

They are Dawgs.

Stafford engineered a last minute comeback as a freshman against the engineers of Georgia Tech. Moreno's first touchdown in Jacksonville sparked a celebration both in the stands and on the field.

Stafford used just one throw in overtime to beat Bama in Tuscaloosa.

Moreno defied gravity once for over five yards in the desert heat of Arizona, finally returning to earth for a Georgia touchdown.

Stafford calmly stood backed against his own end zone and fired a bullet to Massaquoi against the Gators.

Moreno once returned a phone call to LSU's student body from their team's endzone.

Yes, they ARE Dawgs!

How fitting that the Georgia quarterback's last pass as a Dawg was a beautiful spiral that was placed perfectly into the hands of his tailback. And how fitting that the Georgia tailback's last reception as a Dawg was a spectacular catch only outdone by the footwork that made it into a touchdown.

No BCS trophy. No SEC Championship ring to signify the event. No confetti falling from the Orlando sky. Just a signature moment for two talented players.

Two Dawgs their fans will always remember.

Georgia Bulldogs Seal State's Border: Rodney Garner To Stay in Athens

In an off-season that has many Georgia Bulldog fans blue in the face, the average barker is once again breathing a sigh of relief.

Georgia assistant head coach and defensive line coach Rodney Garner has announced that he will remain on Coach Mark Richt’s staff despite being courted heavily by Tennessee as their new offensive line coach.

“Certainly I'm flattered and am sincerely appreciative of the interest shown by Tennessee," Garner explained. "But in the final analysis the positives at Georgia were the determining factors.”

The positives Garner spoke of were being able to coach the defensive side of the ball, work with Coach Richt and raise a family in the Athens community. Garner also took the time to mention that he is eager to work with Georgia’s returning linemen and the 2009 recruiting class.

Garner is the lone holdover from Jim Donnan’s staff and has gained a reputation as a solid recruiter and exemplary line coach. His resume includes four NFL first-round draft picks from his defensive line: Marcus Stroud, Richard Seymour, Charles Grant and Jonathan Sullivan.

That alone is reason for all of the interest in Garner, who has also recently interviewed with Auburn for their head coaching position. But a closer look reveals a deeper reason Tennessee’s new regime came after the Georgia coach.

Garner served at Tennessee before joining Donnan’s Georgia staff in 1998. At the time Fulmer and Tennessee were regularly taking recruits from the state of Georgia, specifically the Atlanta area. However, since Garner left Knoxville the only top recruit the Bulldogs have lost to Tennessee has been Eric Berry of Fairburn, Ga.

The common denominator in the equation is Garner. The coach has not only helped develop NFL-worthy prospects, but has helped build the fence around the state of Georgia. Fulmer and staff no longer had an easy drive down I-75 into Atlanta to evaluate talent and talk to mamas.

Since 1998, Fulmer and Tennessee enjoyed seasons of success. But not to the tune of the teams that included Tee Martin and Jamal Lewis. As seasons came and went, the wins became more and more difficult.

Enter Lane Kiffin.

Tennessee’s new head guy is known as a recruiter, but not necessarily in the Southeast. The decision to hire the young Kiffin was not an immediate threat to Georgia, but set in motion a series of other decisions that could have led to a piece being missing in Richt’s staff.

Tennessee also hired the esteemed NFL defensive mind and head coach’s dad, Monte Kiffin, as their new defensive coordinator. The salary agreed upon is a whopping seven figures.

Garner, who very much wants a coordinator and eventually a head position, undoubtedly took notice.

Then late last week, Tennessee also signed Ed Orgeron as their defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Many Georgia fans who had already lived through the courtship from Auburn of not just Garner but offensive line coach Stacy Searels, may have felt Richt’s staff was safe from being cherry picked.

But then the University of Tennessee jets started flying across the border. And the occupants of the planes were not in the Peach state just to call upon 18-year-old recruits.

Garner was listening. He was even flying back with them to Knoxville.

Even as the state of Georgia’s top football prospect was announcing on national television that he would play ‘tween the hedges next year, the two schools were vying for Garner’s services.

In a way, Branden Smith is a prime example of how things have changed in the state of Georgia leading up to National Signing Day. He will graduate from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta and had a stellar game in the Under Armour All-American game.

Historically, Georgia has had difficulty recruiting in Atlanta. Champ Bailey, Garrison Hearst and even Herschel Walker all came from rural areas of the state. It seems Georgia coaches had trouble getting into high school coaches’ offices…and bleachers.

In Mark Richt’s press conference after being hired in late December 2000, he quickly mentioned the importance of recruiting within the state. He firmly acknowledged that he felt championships could be won with the talent being developed within the state.

Within two years he had added an SEC trophy to Butts-Mehre’s collection and his staff was turning in travel receipts that were easier on the recruiting budget. Atlanta had opened its doors to the new Georgia regime and players like DJ Shockley, Thomas Brown and Thomas Davis had traveled down highway 316 towards Athens.

Last week, when Orgeron signed as a position coach in Knoxville he inked a deal that will pay him more than most coordinators. This potentially put Georgia in a hardship to keep their man as they could not match figures with Tennessee.

Willie Martinez, Georgia’s defensive coordinator, had drawn the ire of many fans for the defensive performances in its three losses and a couple of its wins. So the timing was not right to give their own defensive coordinator a lucrative raise given the Bulldog Nation’s discontent. And to give Garner a raise over Martinez’s compensation was inconceivable.

It seemed Tennessee was in a position of power.

But Coach Richt had an audience with his assistant coach last and Garner made a decision he felt he could live with. His family has spent 11 years in Athens.

Georgia fans are glad they will spend at least one more.

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: Defensive Stands and The Vols' Garner Envy

Greek Literature, Anthropology......or NFL Combines...??

Decisions, decisions. Tick, tock...

We gotta start with the defense. We all realize that this match up set up well for Coach Willie Martinez's unit. There wasn't much mystery in what the Dawgs would do to combat Ringer.

But my oh MY!

I'm very well aware that I have hopped over the fence a few times on the Dawgs' DC, but the Capital One Bowl was a prime example of how the beleaguered defense has been the scapegoat this year.

The game itself was billed for its offensive stars. Javon Ringer and Knowshon Moreno as the Doak finalists, Matt Stafford as the star quarterback, and AJ Green and MoMass as the Georgia receiving duo that could become the second and third receiver in Dawg history to surpass 1,000 yards in a season.

All that offensive pub and it was 6-3 at halftime. Spartans.

The Dawg O turned it over twice, Mimbs gulped a Slurpee too quick before a fourth down and had a brain freeze, and the Spartan offense continually punched the Dawg D in the mouth (as predicted by their tight end, more later). And yet Martinez's crew kept fighting.

Spartans take over on the Dawg 6-yard line, no problem. Completely irresponsible roughing the passer call, sobeit!

The defensive responses came in the form of passion and intensity. Given the opportunity to tuck tail and make plans for the week leading up to Spring classes, Allen, Atkins, Ellerbe, Jones, and Curran snapped the strap a little tighter and went to work.

Sacks, brutal hits, jarring blows and relentless pressure. The only reason Stafford was awarded the CapOne MVP was because the officials didn't have enough hardware for the entire Dawg defensive unit.

In fact, so inspired was the Georgia QB by his defensive compadres' level of play that his best play of the first half was...a tackle. It saved a Spartan touchdown after a tipped pass and interception. The Dawg D took over from there and forced a field goal. What else?

Coach Mark Richt admitted that it was probably not a good decision to scale back the tackling during practices earlier this season as the injuries mounted.

Looking at a sideline Thursday that was littered with black wind pants in lieu of silver britches, I'm not sure he had much of a choice. However, the defense clearly tackled better after more physical bowl preparations.

That and they played a whale of a game for their coaches.

And speaking of coaches, it appears Garner is seriously considering a move to Knoxville to join young Kiffin's staff. I hate to see him go, but CMR could be put in a position where he is unable to ask Evans to compete with the serious coin being thrown around up there.

The elder Kiffin will make seven figures...as a coordinator. Their D-line coach and recruiting coordinator will make more than most coordinators. It appears it may be time for Garner to fly.

And if so, look for Coach Lilly to take over recruiting duties. As far as the Dawgs' D-line coach position, Garner has interviewed enough lately that I would suspect Richt has a well developed short list.

Shout outs

Ol' Willie, for reasons already stated.

the Capital One Bowl for the gift bags that included the thunder sticks; somehow Conner and Ainsley's both disappeared before our 8 hour trip home...??

section 327 for representin' down in Orlando.

the nine teams in my pool of picks this year who covered for me (Bama - that obviously excludes you). Safe to say I'm not winning the dough this year. It's all yours, Brenda.

An anonymous blogger somewhere out there (I've forgotten where I read it) that submitted this joke for the blogosphere's enjoyment: What's the difference between Alabama football and a dollar bill? You can still get four quarters from a dollar.

All of the seniors (and any juniors that choose to declare next week) for another 10 win season and four (or so) years of of dedication. You're welcome back anytime.

Coach Mark Richt for 82 wins in eight seasons. ReMARKable. Anyone who doesn't appreciate what you have done for UGA Athletics is either too young to remember the Goff years or too ignorant to complete a coherent thought.

And lastly, my reader. Go ahead and give your own shout out to your first grade teacher.

Trivia Roundup

T. Namaman correctly answered Bernie's Burning Question last week. MSU tight end Charlie Gantt commented that the Dawgs would back up a little bit when they were hit in the mouth every play. You're obviously dying to see it, Trivia Master. Here it is...

Ainsley Rocks the House

Conner Rocks the House

So another victory (seventh in as many tries) over a Big Ten team in a bowl caps off a weird, yet successful season for our beloved Dawgs.

We started out on top and will finish...somewhere lower. We average two season-ending injuries a week and still manage ten wins.

Head trainer Ron Courson deserves some time off, don'tcha think?

We'll see how much potentially losing Garner will hurt what is shaping up to be another great recruiting class for the Dawgs, especially Marlon Brown. Coach Kiffy has quite the man-crush on the star receiver.

Lilly, you may recall, accomplished quite a lot at FSU coordinating recruiting and Bobo has quickly established himself as a force in mama's living room.

Speaking of recruiting, Branden Smith is scheduled to announce his college choice in tonight's Under Armour All-America game. A smattering of 2009's early enrollees are arriving on campus as we speak, including Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger.

Check back early and often Dawg fans, and others who are so inclined. There's coaching and recruiting news/analysis to follow. We'll call it BDB's version of mat drills.

Peace and goodwill to men.

Bernie

Bernie'sDawgBlawg

http://berniesdawgblawg.blogspot.com/

Georgia Bulldogs Win Capital One Bowl with Actions That Were Louder Than Words

At the height of a crescendo of discontent among fans with Georgia's defensive execution this season, head coach Mark Richt defended his defensive coordinator much as a junkyard dog defends its lot.

"People don't get it," Richt explained back in November after a another gashing of a Georgia defense in Lexington.

It was the third consecutive game in which his defense had surrendered north of 38 points. The coach's words were used to call out those who were targeting Willie Martinez with their angst-ridden rants.

"People think they know, but they don't," Richt said. "...We'd been blitzing, they'd know we'd been playing zone, playing cover one, playing robber, fire zone. If they really knew football, they wouldn't be saying the things they say, but they don't."

And, at the time, the words seemed mostly defensive—at best, a head coach defending a longtime friend and colleague; at worst, a desperate attempt to ignore the numbers.

Before Martinez took over, the defense had been the backbone of success under the Richt regime. Since Brian Van Gorder left Athens, the numbers have steadily gone in the other direction, specifically points per game. And a horrible showing against an in-state rival to end the season had only fanned the flames that burned in Dawg fans' eyes.

Fast forward to yesterday's Capital One Bowl, a 24-12 win for Georgia.

In a game that spotlighted two Doak Walker finalists, it was the two defensive units that shined brighter. The Spartan defense held a star-studded Georgia offense to three points in the first half and made the supposed NFL top draft pick in 2009 look bewildered and befuddled.

In fact, Matthew Stafford's best play of the first half was arguably a tackle he helped to make after an interception. It saved a touchdown and the Dawg defense took over from there, holding the Spartans to a field goal.

In a game that was billed as a professional stepping stone for a couple red and black stars in Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, it was the Georgia defense that carried the team until the offense and the special teams woke up from a New Year's stupor.

There was a physicality and a toughness from the Dawgs unit that produced big hits, solid tackles, and sacks galore. All told, they would rack up six sacks, an interception, and, most importantly, limit Spartan running back Javon Ringer to just 2.4 yards per carry and 47 yards on the ground.

Indeed, this day truly belonged to Martinez's unit. The game itself was a microcosm of a season that was riddled with injuries, penalties and miscues that continually put the Georgia defenders in tough positions. An interception that put the Spartan offense to work six yards from the goal line. A punt that never evolved into itself. A sideline populated by an ever-growing number of players wearing black wind pants in lieu of silver britches.

Each time Martinez's unit was called upon it was able to deliver. Every time its backs were against the wall, they fought their way out with tenacity. Against an inspired Michigan State team, Willie Martinez thanked his boss for his November words by trotting out a defense that played with a rancor reminiscent of the glory days under legendary Erk Russell.

The offseason will not erase the loss to Florida from the minds of Georgia fans. Seven months away from Sanford Stadium will not take away the taste of the loss to Goergia Tech at home.

But on the first day of 2009, Martinez repaid his boss for defending him against an ever-increasing percentage of the Bulldog Nation.

On a day when AJ Green and Mohammed Massaquoi were limited to a catch apiece, Martinez had five players record a sack. In a bowl that was set up for individual performances, the Dawg defense played as one unit, united in their ferocity and mentality.

They simply played as if their actions were more salient than their head coach's words.

And to this Dawg fan, it spoke volumes.

2008 College Football Awards

There's still ball left to play. But on New Year's Eve, this wonderful game is worth a look back at some of the best teams, personalities and plays.

From the scoreboard's in the Big 12 that are still smoking, to the coaching carousel that always stops for one more rider; 2008 was a season to remember.
Begin Slideshow

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: Spartan Mothers and Their High Expectations

As Greek young men prepared for their first battle, their nurturing mommies were rumored to have given them an ultimatum that challenged their manhood and undoubtedly made the little hairs stand up against their tunics.

"With it or on it."

The ancient muthas referred to the soldier's shield. To return with it equated to a victorious warrior; to return on it meant they had perished, but in honor.

....and we would complain when our mothers would insist we finish our grits.

But to return without their shield meant they had performed what would later become known as "pulling a Petrino"; they had seen the field of battle and decided to drop their weapons and scurry home...to mommy. Or in Petrino's case, the warm, loving arms of a late night WooPigSooie!!

Well, the Dawgs have landed in Orlando where they will do battle with the Spartans of Michigan State, all against the backdrop of Mickey, Minnie and...doh, garsh! Goofy.

For the Dawgs, Coach Searels is still in the fold, which last week's BDB poll overwhelmingly predicted (if six of seven votes can be associated with overwhelmingly). Stafford and Moreno are still in red and black...for now. No academic leave 'em behinds and the number of green jerseys in practice is....dwindling.

Things are looking pretty good it seems.

And did we mention that the bowl preparations have been...spirited? A fracas or two (you know...a donnybrook) during scrimmages is a clear sign that the boys are taking this game seriously.

For their part, Michigan State brings a solid running back who ran for more than a mile against Florida Atlantic. Against Penn State...well, barely to the mailbox.

Shield or no shield, the bottom line for this Spartan offense is—as goes Ringer, so goes the Spartans.

Coach Martinez will undoubtedly use his defense to force Spartan QB Hoyer to make plays. It would be a great time for an INT in the secondary. (hey! I asked for it for Christmas and it wasn't under the tree...maybe Santa left it in Orlando) Meanwhile Coach Dantonio will hope to keep Stafford and Moreno on the sideline weighing professional options.

But, in the words of the esteemed and slightly senile Lee Corso, not so fast my friend! Spartans can't slow the Dawgs' roll. Stafford, Green, Moreno, MoMass...heck! Maybe even Dobbs again...they all score.

The good news for Michigan State...they return to East Lansing...but without their shields. Let me know if you want one as a souvenir.

More specific (accurate...???) predictions:

Dawgs 41 Spartie 13

Bernie shells out more money in concessions for Conner and Ainsley than he did on the tickets. BTW—Ainsley wants to know if the Citrus Bowl sells cotton candy. If not, she'd rather just see the game at Sanford (there's no reasoning with her...believe me, I've tried).

Stafford lets the CapOne win marinate a week, then announces he's staying. And Asher opts for more education too.

Moreno is much harder to predict as he is NFL ready now. But I say he announces he's good for another year of hurdling and breaking ankles 'tween the hedges.

So the UGA bookstore sells another two trillion of No. 24 jerseys, by mid-February.

Georgia fans temper their off-season enthusiasm in '09. By late August, we're all thrilled with a top 15 pat on the back.

DC Martinez gets a stay of execution from disloyal, hot under the collar fans (who...?? me??). They decide that since CMR has won over 80 games in eight seasons and has a 6-2 bowl record (after Sparty turns tail), he might actually know what is best for the program.

That's right belligerent bulldogs, just lower the phone and the PBR. Nice and easy....

And of course...all Dawg fans have a very happy New Year.

Trivia this week brought to you by Hannah Montana. Santa invested a lot in her this Christmas. It's her turn to give back.

How does Spartan tight end Charlie Gantt plan on getting the Dawgs to "back up a little bit?"

Winner gets a video clip of my daughter playing guitar for Hannah's band. Pace yourselves on New Year's Eve Dawg fans. Hate for anyone to miss the opening kick...or have to explain to their mother how they lost their shield.

Bernie

Georgia Bulldog Fans Look in the Rear View Mirror

The team that started the season as the nation's most heralded, finds its way to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl.

With its longest road trip in decades, two losses to the best teams in the SEC and its first loss to its in-state rival in eight years behind them, the Georgia Bulldogs are more than a respectable 9-3.

The road to Orlando for the Dawgs was long and difficult, but the rewards are plenty.
Begin Slideshow

2008's Most Influential People in Football

Call it the "Westernized Sports Fan" in me (right, Louie?), but football (the tackle version) is the greatest sport on Earth.

This article takes a look at its most influential people in 2008. From heroic passes on the greatest of stages to temper tantrums in not so private locker rooms, we'll at least catch a glimpse of some of the movers and shakers in the sport we love to watch most.

Can someone pass the cheese dip?
Begin Slideshow

Georgia Coach Mark Richt Nabs Biggest Recruit; Stacy Searels is Staying

Coach Mark Richt of Georgia has nabbed a big-time offensive recruit just one day after Christmas. The Georgia staff was in a heated battle with newly appointed Gene Chizik's staff at Auburn for the prized lineman out of Rome, Ga.

In the end, Stacy Searels decided to stay in Athens.

No doubt, the two schools will battle over coveted high school talent for many years to come. But with National Signing Day still over a month away, no news was more welcome to Dawg fans than the words Richt uttered before taking the field in Orlando for his team's first Florida-based Capital One Bowl practice at Olympia High School.

"From what he’s told me, he plans on staying at Georgia, so we’re excited about that,” Richt said of his second-year offensive line coach.

Searels had been immediately sought after by Chizik, once he was named head man at Auburn. Searels played at Auburn and is widely regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in the game.

This season alone, Searels was forced to "break in" young, raw talent as Georgia faced injuries and inexperience before they even took the field for their 2008 season. Left tackle, the most important position on his line, saw season-ending injuries to Trinton Sturdivant and Vince Vance.

Despite the seemingly constant reshuffling, Georgia's line was able to help offensive stars Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno to standout seasons. Stafford leads the league in passing, and Moreno is second in rushing.

Another of Richt's staff actually interviewed for the head position at Auburn. Rodney Garner, also an Auburn alum, is Georgia's defensive line coach and was not considered for an assistant position at Auburn.

As Auburn began and concluded their head coaching search, Georgia fans grew increasingly concerned that Richt would be interviewing candidates to fill positions early in the off-season.

The fact that Georgia was able to retain both Auburn graduates on staff is a testament to the stability that Mark Richt has brought to Georgia.

It can't be easy to say no when your alma mater comes calling for help. But Dawg fans are certainly glad Coach Searels did.

SEC Year in Review: From Lead Guitar to Second Fiddle?

On January 7th, 2008 the SEC had its second consecutive National Title and third in the last 5 seasons. Overall, the SEC has had 4 titles since the inception of the Bowl Championship Series.

To start the 2008 season, the SEC had four top ten teams and was not just walking the walk when it came to tackle football on the collegiate level. They were setting the bar for the rest of the land.

Florida will once again play for the title to end the 2008 season. And Alabama held the top spot in the rankings for over a month. But there are at least five signs that the SEC is not finishing the 2008 season as the dominant league many believed it to be back in the summer.

From unretirements to Spanish lessons (or lack thereof), Bernie recaps some of the year's wackiest headlines. So grab your Glock and your antacids. Like a Michael Phelps meal, there's a lot to digest.

Bernie's Bowl Season Locks

In a chaotic Bowl Season, a college football fan needs something secure to hold on to. Through 34 games it can get a bit puzzling which team to count on and which to stay away from. No fan wants to risk their pocket change on a flash in the pan or three plus hours watching a group of pretenders.

Think the Ducks will tame the Cowboys offense, wondering if Notre Dame can actually win in the post season?

So, I present to you my locks for your viewing and betting pleasure. From who covers the spread and who needs the points, I'll tell you who is a sure LOCK. They're guaranteed, certifiable winners. I think.....
Begin Slideshow

Atlanta Falcons are Punching all the Right Buttons

Since Bobby Petrino's abrupt departure (God Bless his conniving, little heart) the Falcons are batting a thousand on franchise-making decisions. Last December the players and the fans alike were dazed and confused after watching their all-star QB get locked up in Leavenworth and their coach beat feet to ........Fayetteville, Arkansas? To add insult to injury, Bill Parcells played on the hearts and minds of the fans as he used owner Arthur Blank's trust to land a gig in Miami.

It all turned out to be blessings in disguise, ironically. Just as fans were wondering if their franchise would EVER recover, Blank stiffened his resolve and set in motion a momentum of changes that have all paid immediate dividends and resurrected a franchise that has its eyes set on the future.
Begin Slideshow

The journey may begin Friday afternoon, but between potty stops, gasoline fill-ups, the notorious DVD switch from The Little Mermaid to Madagascar, dinner at some Wendy's the '90s left behind, the less popular DVD switch from Madagascar to Cinderella II, and a Charlotte, N.C., traffic jam or two...

It'll be early Saturday morning before the Tahoe loaded to bear with suitcases, Christmas presents, and empty french fry containers pulls into the in-laws'. How Santa does it, I'll never know.

News outta Athens this week... Stafford, Allen, Atkins, and Moreno have officially dipped their toes into the waters of the NFL. They'll have until Jan. 15 to decide if the feedback they get is worth putting on their NFL swimsuit a year (or two) early or not.

For the best rundown, check out David Hale's Media Notes on his Bulldogs Blog. (BTW— I asked DH about Owens, he said he would check the next time the big guy was available to the media, likely Friday. UPDATE— Bulldogs Blog reports that Owens says he's definitely staying. Use the link to discover another nugget...)

This week I've begun reminiscing of a few years ago when David Pollack was faced with the decision of forgoing his amateur status for NFL stardom or staying in Athens to study and attend class. Particularly with Stafford and Moreno, there has been this feeling since '06 like they would leave Athens as beloved as any other Dawg. Should they choose to go, it won't take as long to clean out their locker as it did Greene, DJ, Pollack, Musa, Brown....others. Knowshon would leave some breathtaking highlights, Stafford some impressive throws. (image SI.com)

When Pollack decided to stay, he became even more endearing to the Bulldog Faithful. Willing to sacrifice a nice paycheck for another year on campus was both enlightening and encouraging amid today's society of instant gratification.

On that day he became Bernie's favorite all-time Dawg. Let's open the phone lines.......Who's your favorite Dawg?

Dawg Bones

Sounds like CMR isn't expecting any casualties from the classroom heading into Bowl preps. I don't know about you, but I'm anxious to hear the crack! of pads coming from the Butts-Mehre back yard.

I keep rinsing and repeating, but I just can't get the taste of that poor, poor defensive performance against Tech out of my mouth. And Jan. 1 is still a ways away.

Take this, Techies! UGA graduates enjoy a better value for their post-secondary education. We're not delivering your pizza anymore, we're hiring the high school kids to do it for us.

Georgia backup punter Drew Butler is evidently trying to get one of his Sugarloaf neighbors (Matt Ryan) to play a round of golf with Matthew Stafford. Sugarloaf Country Club, Stafford, Ryan.......Hey Drew, if ya need a fourth......???

If they do tee it up together, I'm guessing Ryan will fall in line with Archie Manning as advising Stafford to stay. Wonder if Peyton (that makes a great girl's name doesn't it?) and Eli will also get a chance to speak to the Dawg QB.

TotalUGA.com reports the recruitment of the much sought-after receiver Marlon Brown will likely come down to Georgia and the hillbillies. Ohio State among others also are in the mix. If Brown does choose Tennessee it will obviously be because of their new head coach's experience in running a high achieving, professional, and respected program like the Raiders.

Brown is in town on Saturday for an UNofficial visit. Let's hope it goes better than his Official visit, the Dawgs' loss to Bama.

And there is (no) truth to the rumor that CPJ will use the bulk of his new $17 million contract with Georgia Tech to finance a Dawg fighting operation. BDB has recently learned that the Dawg killer is actually a cat lover. All together now.....Awwww!

Friday's Feedbag

BREAKING NEWS: BRETT FAVRE MAY RETIRE!

And in what may be bigger news, Plax hasn't shot himself in the upper thigh in nearly three weeks.

One of the best games on the entire bowl schedule may be Tuesday night's Poinsettia (did I spell that right Jenn?) Bowl. One of the nation's most powerful offenses in Boise State meets the nation's second best defense in TCU. Both coaches were heavily rumored on the coaching carousel, but got off the same place they got on. It may come down to which team was less distracted.

BDB is thinking about organizing a winter field trip to see the Vince Dooley tribute. With the weather and the crappy game, just never made it over there the day the Wreck wrecked the streak.

And you know what's within a couple blocks of the Dooley Tribute........Steve's. Steak and Cheese all the way and a dozen hot wings. OH YEAH!

Statesboro Anonymous offers THIS LINK to you gentlemen who are waiting to the last minute to buy your wife or significant other a mop or an umbrella for Christmas.

Six shopping days left, reader.

Sudden Death Playoff Trivia - It's been two issues of BDB since the question was asked and we spent some time airing some grievances Monday. Well........turns out BDB does indeed have Seinfeld fans who thumb through its pages. Within hours of Monday's blog posting, we had a number of comments and emails, like .........nearly eight.

YadaYadaYada....Let's get to the prizes. The following made Bernie both chuckle and laugh uncontrollably, in no particular order:

Erin's Seinfeldism on tabloid reading: "I think that people who read the tabloids deserve to be lied to."

Nama's favorite episode is obviously The Chinese Restuarant as he submitted several doozies from that early show. Hard to compete with, "You're going by sound? What are we, whales?"

Fred jumped into BDBs cyberspace with a "play" on The Serenity Now episode, blending it with Auburn's struggles to overcome their own ineptitude: "Mediocrity now!" Well done Fred, well done!

Cord may hold the Penske file, but that doesn't prohibit him from reaching into The Abstinence episode to grab this classic from Jackie (the Cochranesque lawyer): "Miss Wilkie, your tobacco company has turned this beautiful specimen, into a horrible twisted freak."

And Joe couldn't decide on just one, there's just so many, right? My favorite among his offerings comes from The Marine Biologist, "The sea was angry that day my friends. Like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli."

Enjoy your Festivus Pole everyone. At the BDB family dinner, you all will NOT be listed among those who have disappointed me this past year. You're all winners in my book!

Trivia: When Rusty says, "Dad, this tree won't fit in our back yard. " How does Clark Griswold respond? Winner gets a brand new dual bag vacuum....to give to your wife for Christmas. "It's the best vacuum cleaner you'll ever have, baby."

And with that another chapter of BDB comes to a close. We'll be back after a long weekend with a special Holiday version of BDB. Until then I leave you with the wise words of George Costanza: "Do you ever get down on your knees and just thank God that you know me and have access to my dementia?"

I'm sure your answer is.......some days.

Gotta run. These pretzels are making me thirsty!

Bernie

Atlanta Falcons Are Playing with House Money in Year One of Renovations

A year ago, the Atlanta Falcons were no closer to winning the Super Bowl than the Hawks, Braves or Thrashers. A team that finished the 2006 season 7-9 and looking for a new coach, was on its way to a 4-12 finish and its second coaching search in 11 months.

Bobby Petrino had abandoned the team like a coward backs out of a dark and dangerous back alley, leaving his wife and kids to face the uncertainty alone. Michael Vick had been sentenced in a federal dog fighting trial, leaving behind him a city of fans divided in allegiances and morals.

Perhaps worse yet, “Meangelo” Hall and other teammates chose the low road, exacerbating the issue of low morale within the Georgia Dome and on the streets that surround it.

To put things plainly, the Falcons weren’t a bag of trash at the top of the can waiting for the truck to come along and take them away. They were the soiled napkin, stuck at the bottom and unable to change its station in life. Without help…..

I grew up about 60 miles outside of Atlanta, yet rarely was able to see the Falcons play. Sunday afternoon games were eternally blacked out (unless the Falcons were playing the Cowboys), and the teams were rarely worth a drive over to the big city. I think the first time I saw them live was when my high school marching band played at their halftime show.

What do I remember about that trip? Saints fans walking out of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium screaming, “Who dat?”

As owner Arthur Blank began his rebuilding process last December, I remember feeling uncertain. Despite an unequivocal trust in the former Home Depot founder, there was a feeling that this franchise was doomed, destined to sporadic seasons of greatness, followed by decades of futility.

When Thomas Dimitroff was hired as the new GM, it didn’t send shockwaves through the city or the league. But it was clearly more than a step in the right direction. Together they tapped longtime assistant Mike Smith of Jacksonville as the new coach.

While it was hard to deny the coach’s resume, many fans had been waiting for a coach that would make a bigger splash. After all, Parcells had used Blank as a bargaining chip and the newspapers had fed the frenzied fans with name dropping exercises. Cowher. Carroll.

Despite the disappointing feeling, the signs of a turnaround were real and came early.

Personnel subtractions were made both for monetary reasons (Warrick Dunn), team identity reasons (DeAngelo Hall) and both (Alge Crumpler). While waving goodbye to one of the NFL’s classiest players in Dunn was difficult, it was necessary to free up room under the cap.

Hall will be the first (and likely only) one to tell you that he is one of the most talented corners in the league, but his mouth divided the Atlanta locker and had proven to be hazardous to the franchise’s health.

The Falcons were undergoing an extreme makeover. They were looking for good players and great men to give them a fresh start.

Michael Turner was the offseason’s biggest talent at free agent running back, despite being a backup his entire career in San Diego. He made Atlanta his first stop on what could have been an extensive tour of suitors bidding for his services.

He landed in Atlanta and the Blank-Dimitroff team convinced him that he was the right fit and that they were headed in the right direction.

Turner never got back on the plane.

Michael Boley and Chauncey Davis signed tenders as restricted free agents in April after Jason Elam had capped off an impressive free agent signing period in late March. Nothing flashy. No huge names. But all significant steps towards a competitive product to put on the field turf of the Georgia Dome.

Dimitroff parlayed a successful early free agent signing period with a draft that has proven to be Atlanta’s best ever. Matt Ryan was supposed to be a risky pick for a team needing defensive help. Instead he is not just a Rookie of the Year option, but a viable MVP candidate.

Sam Baker and Curtis Lofton have provided much needed help at the tackle and linebacker position. Chevis Jackson and Harry Douglas didn’t make an immediate impact but have shown they aren’t your average third rounders.

Fans would be surprised just how early these moves would pay dividends.

With most of the personnel decisions made, changes were needed within the minds of the players that had witnessed the tragedy that was the ’07 season. Mindsets would need to be reset. Both tweaks and major shifts of purpose were necessary to build the foundation that Dimitroff and Smith were pouring.

Not all the changes, however small they seemed, were easy. For instance, Abraham was asked to cut back on the downs he plays. He hedged, postured. You could read his body language to say, “I’m a star at my position. You need me out there first through third downs.” As we approach Week 16, everyone can see the difference it is making. Abraham included.

A much maligned receiving corps would be counted on to block. A lot. And well. The result is that Roddy White and Michael Jenkins are having incredible seasons both on and away from the ball.

And it was small changes like those that lead to a major renovation in the hearts and minds of the players in the Atlanta locker room. Those renovations have provided something palpable, something tangible for fans to grasp a hold of.

Case in point: Week Six against the visiting Bears. Chicago scored with 11 seconds remaining to take a 20-19 lead and fans that weren’t preparing to stream away from the Georgia Dome with heads lowered, already had. The Falcons would lose, right? They don’t win games like this do they?

But that isn’t the mantra of the new Falcon. Mike Smith’s Falcons play for 60 minutes and with an attitude of a prize fighter. Ryan collects his offense near midfield after a pooch kick and a quick 10 yard return. He finds Michael Jenkins along the sideline with the poise of a Troy Aikman during his glory years and the skill of a Dan Marino at his prime.

Jason Elam atones for a 33-yard hook that missed earlier and connects from 48 yards, his fifth field goal of the game. Falcons win their fourth game of the season in dramatic style, matching their win total from the season before in just the sixth week of the season.

Bobby who? Michael who?

Yes, while the national media was busy acknowledging the work done in the offseason on one hand, and picking the Falcons to finish in the cellar on the other, Mike Smith was telling his team that there was no reason they couldn’t win this season. A team expected by both experts and fans alike to win just a handful of games was expecting to win each and every game.

So now a team that has never had back to back winning seasons is two wins and a little help away from making the playoffs. The Atlanta Falcons, who a year ago were looking for emotional-show-of-support wins for an interim coach, are now staring at a possible 11 win season.

One season that has changed the attitude of the team on the field and the attitude of the fans in the stands.

The Falcons may win 10 or 11 games and still miss the playoffs (what a travesty for a team that has come so far). But they are stacked for the future. Franchise cornerstones Ryan and Turner are inked for the long haul.

Dimitroff and Smith, while relatively new to their respective jobs, are vested in the future of this organization. And most importantly, there are more No. 2 jerseys around town than there are No. 7 jerseys.

A not so subtle sign that regardless of the outcome of this season, the Atlanta Falcons are no longer gamblers in the market of the National Football League. They’re playing with house money now and will soon see free agents do more than entertain their offers.

They’ll see more season ticket holders renew for a chance to see a team that was once forgotten at the bottom of a smelly can, rise to heights yet unexplored.

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: Could Rodney Garner and Stacy Searels Join the Circus?

Auburn Officials are Full of Chizik

Mike Leach had an 11-1 record this season in the Big XII, but wasn't even given a glance. Gene Chizik went 2-10 this season in the Big XII and was given the keys to one of the top programs in the nation. You can officially place the Auburn faithful into two groups right now: Those with the word "HUH?" continuously hanging from their lips and those that are a little too quick to defend the hire.

You know, they say something like, "He's our coach and I support him. (Long pause) DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO WIN IN AMES?!?!?"

Simmer down, simmer down.

Yes, Chizik won just five games while at Iowa State. But he lost his last 10 and needed victories over Kent State and South Dakota State this season to avoid going zero for '08. From 2-0 to 2-10. Ouch! And don't think that he had the unenviable task of playing Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. 'Cuz he didn't have to line up against any of them.

So, does Chizik have any ties to Coach Garner? I dunno. But there are rumblings that part of the breakdown between Tuberville and Jacobs was their interest in releasing some assistant coaches from their duties and Tubs' loyalty to them. If that was a line in the sand, I would expect that Auburn officials would have a few names for Chizik to add to his Rolodex.

Word on the street is Willie Martinez isn't one of them.

But I would be surprised if we're not looking for a new defensive and offensive line coaches in as little as a week. Both Searels and Garner are Auburn alums, former players and would-be bigger losses to Georgia than Moreno, Owens, Stafford, and Allen put together. You can bet Pat Dye has already recommended them to Chizik.

In fact, is that Coach Richt's phone ringing right now?

Heisman Trophy Goes to a Quarterback

So Tebow is left completely off of more ballots than Ralph Nader and yet, gets more first place votes than Bradford. Congrats to Mr. Bradford, and he is very deserving of this award, but it sounds like the Heisman voting could use an electoral college to further screw things up.

Bradford owes a BIG thank you to both voters with agendas and faulty tiebreakers in the Big XII. Most voters waited until after last week's games to cast their ballot. McCoy probably should've won the trophy but didn't play. And the other finalist finished playing four hours before Bradford. This was a case of who holds the ball last, wins.

Dawgs Put Academic Exams Behind Them, Prepare for Gridiron Exam

News outta Athens is slow leading up to bowl preparations. It might be a good time to peek around, and see what some other more knowledgeable writers are offering up.

First stop, David Hale has a two-part interview with Damon Evans posted to his blog. I found Evans' take on the season, and more importantly, the status of the program particularly refreshing. The man is obviously a good administrator with great leadership skills. Jay Jacobs! Pay attention!

Athens Banner-Herald's Marc Weiszer ran a piece on the bonuses that are in store for the coaching staff. See if you think the numbers add up. Rivals.com has the bowl games ranked in terms of best to worst. Click HERE for The Dead Guy's run down of the SEC side of things or HERE to go straight to Rivals.

Exams are now over, and practices will begin to pick up. I guess we'll also know soon if there are any academic casualties that get left behind as the team heads to sunny Florida. Meanwhile, let's get to some...

Shout Outs

Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith for getting all up in Antonio Bryant's grill and showing him the way to his own sideline. Politely.

Christine Nama for making sure dinner Saturday night wasn't Spumoni free. Ahh! You go girl!

Munk for the following YouTube clickable. All together now: Fa ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra!

ALL the talent at the W Hotel Saturday night. It was nice to get a glimpse of how the other half lives...among other things.

The nine Brian Nichols jury members who saw reason and argued on the side of logic.

Suspensions

The other three jurors.

Monday Leftovers

Last year around this time, we were all geek'd up about the Dawgs' finish to the '07 season and were peeking ahead at the '08 schedule. It looked daunting at the time, but proved to be not so bad with teams like ASU, Tenn, and Auburn failing to reach acceptable levels of competition in tackle football. Next year ain't no walk in the park. Will it also prove to be deceptive?

When I pored over the '08 schedule in August, I thought 10-2 would be great. 9-3 ain't too far south of that, but it sure doesn't even feel good. I guess it's been several years since we've lost to both the reptiles and insects.

Cheer up War Eagles. At least your coach is old enough to vote.

Dan Mullen, newly appointed head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs will likely not call the plays in the national championship game next month. Tebow says the Gators could handle the duty "by committee." I've already submitted a few I thought they should run, cc'd to one Bob Stoops, Norman OK.

And one last link for you to pore over. January 15th is the deadline to declare for the NFL Mega Millions Lottery. ESPN's Todd McShay alludes to a possibility that this year's crop of underclassmen leaving early could increase by as much as 33 percent over last year. No surprise that he lists both Stafford and Moreno as likely leaving.

And to wrap things up, the tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances. I've got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it! Last week's trivia was a complete bust. BDB had one entry. It included a brief excuse and a Wikipedia link, that didn't link. Not exactly a Festivus Miracle.

But rules are rules and the Festivus Pole must go to someone. So the person that submits their favorite Seinfeld quote that makes Bernie chuckle out loud will win the playoff round. And will gain a leg up on the feats of strength.

Have a great week reader. Only nine shopping days left.

Bernie

Chizik Is Off the Chizzang!

In news that has thrilled college football fans all around the southeast, Auburn is set to introduce Gene Chizik as the new head coach of their tackle football team tomorrow. Ironically, most of the inspired populace reside outside of Opelika.

Coach Chizik won a beauty contest that was made infamous more for who didn't enter than who was being interviewed. Sexy names such as Spurrier and Muschamp spurned opportunities to take over for Coach Tubs, perhaps fearing that their ears would not match up against the beleaguered Tuberville.

Other attractive candidates such as Gill and Hoke just didn't have the star power or pizazz the Auburn brass were looking for.

Coach Chizik...here's your headset.

Undeterred, Auburn officials scoured the NCAA landscape for signal callers with a fraction of the resume of the man who had resigned...himself to being fired. Chizik checked out in every category officials were looking for: a heartbeat, willing to coach against Nick Saban each year, and answer their phone.

As news spread back to the plains of their former defensive coordinator's move back east, fans of the Auburn program were so mesmerized by the hire that they suppressed their glee by hurling insults at Athletic Department higher ups as they de-boarded BOOSTer Lowder's plane.

The remaining fans streamed into churches this morning, undoubtedly to ask forgiveness for doubting their team officials' competence.

Chizik brings a humbling 5-19 record with him that he apparently will bring in a carry on bag during the flight to eastern Alabama. Despite the modest record, Iowa State officials are sad to see their nearly winless leader leave.

ISU Athletic Director described the news as both "hurtful and disappointing." Apparently standards are at recession-type levels already in Ames.

A news conference is set for Monday. At the conclusion of Coach Chizik's introduction the Auburn Athletic Office will close for Christmas vacation, recess and scheduled lobotomies.

Bernie's Dawg Blawg: Another Festivus Miracle

And the Heisman goes to...

...Jay Jacobs.

Can you imagine a funnier holiday movie than the one showing right now on the plains in Auburn?

I've always considered A Christmas Story the greatest Christmas movie ever. Nothing gets me in the spirit like the scene with the Chinese waiters singing to the Parker family, "Deck the haws wit bows of horry, ra ra ra ra ra, ra ra ra ra." (image IMDb)

Seriously, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, or Sam Bradford may walk away tomorrow with the hardware, but I challenge anyone to find a person more valuable to their program's decline than Mr. Jacobs.

The SEC is supposed to be the most professional of the major conferences, and yet Auburn's AD is getting outplayed by Syracuse's Daryl Gross.

I mean even Mississippi State has found its man with a sense of organization, a modicum of professionalism. They named Dan Mullen, the Florida offensive coordinator, earlier this week. MSU fans will get really excited about that news next week when the newspaper gets printed and word begins to spread.

As far as the pleasantries in New York, Tebow has a real shot at pulling an Archie. You have to figure Colt and Sam will split the mid-west, and the left coast is always a crap shoot when a Trojan isn't in the mix. So if Tebow's smile and boyish charm can sweep the eastern seaboard...we might have our first repeater since '75. Wonder who Archie's voting for?

And if lil' Tim does repeat as Heisman winner then goes on to win his second MNC...he comes back to Gainesville next season to...trim his fingernails? Work on his video application to Dancing with the Stars? Provide trailer park circumcisions to jort-wearing fans?

Speaking of underclassmen about to cash in their collegiate chips: Owens, Moreno, Stafford, and Allen...Isn't Athens a nice place to live?

I was working on a piece to project next year's starters for the Dawgs, but it would be hard to outdo this piece from David Hale.

I will add this, however: In 2005, the Bulldogs had a starting quarterback who had been extremely patient (DJ) and a tailback by committee that got things done. They gave LSU and Nick Saban a beatdown of glorious proportions in the Georgia Dome to bring home the banner. So all's not lost should Stafford choose the Lions and Moreno starts singing, "J-E-T-S jetsjetsjets!!" Not to be greedy, but it would help if Owens and Asher didn't follow.

Dawg Bones

CMR said he is pulling for Rodney Garner to land the job at his alma mater. Problem is it was just a courtesy interview, even though Garner would be a great hire.

If he really wanted Garner to get the job Richt should do Garner a favor and elevate him to co-coordinator NOW. It would help the Dawgs and it would give him a better shot at Auburn's head job when it is vacant again in one and a half seasons...you know...after they hire their "Shula" to keep the seat warm while Lowder twiddles his thumbs.

Stacy Searels was jobbed. I dare you to find an assistant coach more deserving of the Broyles Award. He loses his All-SEC monster at LT before the season starts and continuously is having to reshuffle and retool his line throughout the season. Just when things are somewhat settled, another season-ending injury pops up and it's back to the drawing board. I don't mind letting the cat outta the bag...I smell a Bernie's Dawg Blawg shout-out. Small consolation I guess...really small.

Speaking of getting hosed on the awards circuit, Moreno lost the Doak Walker to some kid in Iowa. I had to look up which conference Iowa plays in. I complained to Jenn and she asked if this Hawkeye had better numbers. You know...I'm not sure I care.

I guess Knowshon and Ringer can battle it out for second on January 1st.

And speaking of the Capital One Bowl, the Dawgs go into the reindeer games as a touchdown favorite. I haven't watched the Spartans play yet, but Javon Ringer is supposed to be a work horse. I guess as long as he isn't as good as Tebow, Coffee or anyone who touched the ball on offense for the Rambling Wreck....we may have a shot.

Ringer has said he envisions the "perfect" game to end his collegiate career: 25 carries for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Of course he also said "Georgia has a tremendous defense." Proving he's either naive or drunk.

Running out of career options to steer coach Paul Johnson towards, BDB is lowering itself to a good ol' smear campaign. Syracuse failed us, Wal-Mart isn't hiring greeters until after the recession...so it is time the truth came out. CPJ is a Dawg Killer, worthy of all the indignation of one Michael "Jailyard Hero" Vick.

Lastly, what the hell's a hawkeye?

Friday's Feedbag

Word outta Knoxville is that Lane Kiffin has not only passed the NCAA test that allows him to recruit players to become hillbillys. He also has passed his driver's test on the first try and can drive a car!

There's a scenario out there that O'Leary is on the way out at Central Florida and that Charlie Strong would be a leading candidate.

If that plays out, it could leave Florida without either coordinator for the MNC game. Methinks Florida still wins by two touchdowns.

Took the girls to see Santa this week. Some three year old behind us tried to cut into our face time. Long story short...I think I'm ink'd onto the naughty list. So no eggnog for me!

Tech is the favorite to win the Eat 'mor Chikin Bowl. Although I'm sure LSU will show up and dress out, Tech may have this one in the bag well before people start putting on those New Year's party hats. The Tiger defense has done nothing but disappoint all season. Johnson wins a big one on the GA Dome floor, only strengthening his ties to Vick.

Have a great weekend, BDB reader! We wish you all good parking spaces and recession style prices on what is to be a merry shopping weekend. Me...I'll be safe at home, relentlessly punching buttons on my remote control.

Yes, the honey-do list is shortened. I managed to fix the gas logs last weekend. With my cold-natured and circulatory challenged wife, that should buy me another week and a half.

Weekly Trivia

Trivia this week embraces the spirit of the season with the holiday for the rest of us. The reader with the best explanation of the origins of Festivus wins an aluminum pole that requires no decoration (image festivusweb.com). In the words of Frank Costanza, "I find tinsel distracting."

And always remember loyal readers, Festivus Yes!, Bagels NO!

Final Exams: Will Stafford and Moreno...Pass?

As Bulldog fans finalize their Christmas lists and UGA students complete their fall semester coursework, quarterback Matt Stafford and tailback Knowshon Moreno prepare for a final exam of a different variety; one that will impact both players and fans alike.

It has but one simple question: Will No. 7 and No. 24 pass on their remaining eligibility to cash in on a chance to be among the top picks in April’s NFL draft? Georgia fans stand ready to grade the two stars, but the reality is that this is one test they cannot fail.

Stafford’s transcript:

Experts feel he could use another season, but he is widely regarded as having the arm that is more than NFL ready.

38 games played, 33 started (26-7 record as a starter, 29-9 overall).

21 games with over 200 yards, three with over 300 and one over 400.

2008 semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award.

2-1 against Tech, 1-2 against Florida.

Mock NFL drafts mostly have him as the first QB taken.

Hard to imagine him not going below top five since both Detroit and Kansas City need a franchise QB and both should finish either in the NFL cellar or on the steps towards it.

Speech Communication major entered school a semester early.

Moreno’s transcript:

Definitely NFL ready.

Tremendous talent, even without breakaway speed.

Has the quickness and instinct that makes defenders miss.

Dangerous receiver out of the backfield and he can block…….well!

Has 475 carries for 2,672 yards and 30 TDs.

Averages nearly six yards per carry and over 12 yards per reception.

Sports Communication major has stated that finishing his degree is very important to him and his family; Redshirt sophomore is on track to graduate.

Talent and development aside, the legacy of these two players is undoubtedly unfulfilled to date.

For all of Stafford’s talent and NFL potential, he has not done something that D.J. Shockley was able to do in just one season: be an integral part of a championship team. For all of Moreno’s highlights and YouTube hits, he may end up playing one less season between the hedges than Herschel and Hearst.

So while the players study vocabulary like a potential NFL rookie salary cap and guaranteed money within a contract, fans are longing to put their stars on a pedestal with the likes of Buck Belue, David Greene, D.J., Herschel, Musa Smith, and Thomas Brown. Those players earned championship banners that the fans can look upon even today with pride.

The opportunity for glory in the NFL could be there this time next year as well, but that is never a guarantee.

Were Stafford and Moreno to both return for the 2009 season, Georgia would widely be considered one of the best offensive teams in the country and surely the arguments for the players to stay in school are more academic and emotional than financial.

But, in about a month pencils will be ordered down and answers will be turned in. In a holiday season known for giving, Dawg fans selfishly want another season to see them in silver britches.

However, the lures of a professional career and financial security may be too great. Surely Stafford and Moreno will parlay the marketing leading up to the Capital One Bowl with a decision to declare for the NFL draft. Their stock continues to rise and the exam they will surely pass.

Dawg fans however, will ask Santa for the only answer they consider a passing score: “I’m still a Dawg.”
