Oakland Insider: Raiders Open Season Against Chargers on MNF!

Hello Sports fans, it's time for another edition of Oakland Insider.

Were looking at the season opener this time and what a great game it will be. The Raiders are hosting the San Diego Chargers this year on Monday Night.

Last year the Silver and Black were humiliated by the Denver Broncos on the season opener which was on Monday night also for the whole world to watch. Now the Raiders get a chance to redeem themselves by hosting the Chargers.

The Chargers are no slumps and have plenty of weapons to attack the Raiders. Merriman is back and he is a play maker for sure. L. Tomlinson is always a force to reckon with even though he is getting older.

So what is in the game plan for this year?

Here's the formula for a win against the Chargers on Monday Night.

First Protect J-Russ. This is so important to keep Russell from getting gun shy. If he is confident in his line he will make smart decisions instead of running for his life. It's so important to keep the leader of the offense in the right frame of mind, no rushing the throws ect...

Second is to hammer the Chargers Defence with Michael Bush. Bush is a hard running back that will wear down the D and allow many other offensive plays work well. Bush should touch the ball no less than 20 times in the game.

Third is to use McFadden as a multiple attack running back. His catching and running abilities are fantastic and with Bush pounding on the D, McFadden should have no problem making some very big plays.

Now there is obviously many other things that will need to take place for the Raiders to walk away victoriously from this Monday Night Game. Special Teams need to do what they do best and put 6 up sometime in the game. The D will need to attack Phillip Rivers and make him make mistakes.

This should be a great game, hosting two phenomenal running backs to watch with McFadden and Tomlinson, and it's on National Television so everyone gets to see them go at it.

The draft is right around the corner and things could change with additions these two teams will be making...But that's a different article.

Thanks to everyone reading this article and please give feedback.

Go Raiders!!

World Series of Poker: What's Happening to It?

The idea of a World Series of Poker began in 1969 with an event called the "Texas Gambling Reunion." It was as an invitational tournament sponsored by Tom Moore of San Antonio, Texas, and held at the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno.

The first WSOP occurred in 1970, and was an invitation-only affair for which Benny Binion welcomed six of the best-known poker players to The Horseshoe Casino.

It was not a freeze-out tournament; it had set start and stop times, and the winner was determined by secret ballot.

The whole thing took a while to grow; 12 years passed before the number of participants broke the half-century mark.

Today, the WSOP has become a major event. There have been many memorable occurrences during the annual main events; remember Jack Straus's 1982 comeback win after discovering he had one $500 chip left when he thought he was out of the tournament?

Even Hollywood loves the WSOP: The end of the 1988 main event was featured in the movie Rounders.

But now, the game is becoming more of a discussion than a competition. With players like Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, Chris Moneymaker, Phil Hellmuth Jr., and Daniel Negreanu, you never know what your going to hear.

Everyone likes a good game of poker, but is the trash talking really neccessary? I prefer seeing "paying" players getting into the big show and putting these cry babies in their place.

Some hot-shots believe they are so good, they think they can tell what cards you have in your hand before you even show them.

Crazy part is, sometimes they can, and it blows me away! Are they good guessers or just that good at poker?

I look back at the exclusive, upscale game and wonder how it became a loud-mouth, tongue-lashing battle. We need more of the Brunson family members to play and smooth out the rough edges.

The WSOP has more publicity now than ever, so maybe the public likes these antics. Either way, poker is gaining more and more momentum day after day, and it's not going away anytime soon.

Let's all sit back and enjoy the ride!

Oakland Insider: Raiders Eye Torry Holt

Hello sports fans! It's time for Part III of the Search for a Veteran WR in Oakland.

We have talked about Boldin and Harrison in past articles; now we look at Torry Holt.

Holt has played for St Louis since he was drafted as the sixth pick of the 1999 NFL Draft. At 192 pounds, he ran a 4.34 second 40-yard dash and had a vertical jump of 37 inches at his NFL Combine ten years ago.

In his rookie season, he posted 53 receptions, 788 total yards, and six touchdowns on the way to the Super Bowl XXXIV championship.

In his illustrious career, he has amassed over 12,000 yards and more than 70 touchdowns. Holt has been to the Pro Bowl seven times and has been the MVP of his Rams twice.

Since this mission to find a leader for the receiving corps in Oakland began, Harrison and Holt have both been researched, and an interesting fact has been gleaned.

These two are the only receivers with multiple 1,600-yard receiving seasons.

Holt brings a lot of experience and leadership, and both would be very beneficial in the Raiders' locker room. He has great hands and still has speed to get the job done.

To boot, his character is untouchable. In the '99 offseason, he created the Holt Foundation in memory of his mother, Ojetta Holt-Shoffner. It's dedicated to supporting the fight against cancer in all forms, with a specific emphasis on children.

He'd make an immediate impact on the Raiders if they could grab him.

Silver and Black in 2009! Go Raiders!

Oakland Insider: Khalif Barnes is Now with the Oakland Raiders

Another addition to the up and coming Oakland Raiders in now official!

The Raiders have been rebuilding their team for quite some time now. Al Davis is doing the right things this year to ensure some wins for the Silver and Black.

First Tom Cable brought the locker room together last year. Winning the last two games of the season against good teams gave the team the motivation they needed. Tom Cable is the right man for the job and now Al Davis is putting the money where it should be this year.

Aso was a great job on Al's part. He is amazing and a complete shut down corner which will make QB's hesitate throwing his way every game.

Lechler was another great decision. He has the best leg in football, and it's sure nice to have the ability to put the ball inside the five yard line when needed.

Now Oakland adds Khalif Barnes.

Barnes played with the Jags since 2005 where he was a force to recon with. Starting as a Rookie in 12 games and being one of 6 rookie linemen to start at least 12 games in the Jags history.

In Barnes's Career he has started in 57 of 60 games.

Barnes is a great fix for the Oakland Raiders. Games are won from the line of scrimmage and he will make an immediate impact for the Raiders.

Barnes signed to a one year contract.

Oakland Insider: Why Marvin Harrison Is A Good Fit For The Oakland Raiders

Part II of the search for a substantial WR in Oakland continues.

The first report came in about Anquan Boldin. Great reads and comments; thanks to all. Now, we are going to look at Marvin Harrison, a free agent who is looking to keep playing in the NFL.

The Oakland Raiders should take a long hard look at this man.

Harrison has been an amazing receiver in the NFL for quite some time. In Indianapolis, he amassed over 14,000 yards and over 125 touchdowns. He has been to the Pro Bowl eight times and also holds the NFL record for receptions in a single season with 143, set in 2002.

Harrison will bring many things to the Silver and Black if able to. He brings great experience, abilities, and leadership. Harrison's character has rarely been in question, on or off the field.

He can lead the young players and show them what it takes to be winners. Oh, and he also brings the object that only elite players obtain...a Super Bowl ring.

Harrison has played when times were tough and when times were great, so he has the experience of both.

His abilities are hard to match. Yes, he has slowed down a bit due to his age and time in the NFL, but his hands are still magnificent. Short passes are no problem, and if you let him by you, he still has some juice in the tank.

The Oakland Raiders could use him right away. Not only would he help mentor the young WRs, but JaMarcus Russell could use a go-to receiver. As an add-on, picture the Raiders bringing on Tim Brown as the WR coach. The receiving corps would improve greatly.

The Raiders are getting very close to becoming a formidable team and this would be the icing on the cake. Taking Harrison from FA will also allow the draft to be used on linemen, which is a huge hole for the Raiders.

So, can Oakland acquire this Hall of Famer? Let's hope so.

Oakland Insider: Why Not Trade for Anquan Boldin?

The Raiders have been rebuilding for quite some time now. Making many great additions and also making some pretty stupid ones has been the track record for the Oakland Raiders for the past six years.

This year's offseason has been looking interesting so far. Unlike last year when the Raiders spent hellacious amounts of money on players who didn't hold up their end of the bargain, this year they have focused on the current players who make a difference.

Aso was a great decision! Shane Lechler was a great decision! Now it's time to step up to the plate and make one more great decision...Anquan Boldin!

Let's just think for a second what it would mean to have Boldin in the Raiders' starting lineup.

First of all, it allows Zach Miller and Johnnie Lee Higgins to free up due to the defense watching Boldin like a hawk.

Second, it makes Javon Walker, who is staying in Oakland, come back to reality and play like he should. He needs to step up to the plate. He has the talent and Boldin will give him the leadership he needs.

Now let's talk about the running game. Michael Bush and Darren McFadden will be storm troopers on the ground due to the defense backing up to protect from Boldin, Miller, and Higgins.

What about JaMarcus Russell? As long as the Raiders can protect him and give him some time to throw...Watch out because it could be raining footballs!

This team is on the verge of becoming a strong competitor in the NFL. Adding Boldin will do so much it's crazy!

The Raiders will need to make this happen since many other WR's are now off the market. If we can't get Boldin it will be crucial to snag Harrison for the leadership. Boldin is the No. 1 choice and Al needs to go and get him.

Silver and Black in 2009!

The Oakland Insider: Anquan Boldin or the House?

Anquan Boldin

Boldin is a strong WR. He will compliment J-Russ with his ability to catch a short pass and make a huge gain out of it. He brings the experience that the Raiders need without the drama (Jevon Walker).

On Dec. 7, 2008, in a win against the St. Louis Rams, Boldin became the first player in Arizona Cardinal franchise history to gain 1,000 yards receiving in four consecutive seasons.

Boldin has broken several NFL records. With 101 catches in his rookie year he was the only rookie to get picked for the Pro Bowl. He was the fastest WR to gain 300 catches and holds the NFL record for the most catches in the first 26 games at 157.

Boldin will be a FA this year and the Raiders could use him immediately!

TJ. Houshmandzadeh

The House is a major factor in the WR position.

TJ was a steal by the Bengals in the 2001 Draft, getting him in the seventh round.

His rookie year wasn't stellar by any means except the 126 punt return yards against the Browns. Other than that he gained a mere 228 yards rec on 21 receptions.

TJ is a physical player just like Boldin. He big and strong at 200 pounds. The House has made a serious impact on the NFL with almost 6000 yards rec in his career.

He's been called one of the NFL's most underrated players by many pundits.

TJ will be a FA this year and the Raiders would love to have him line up for J-Russ to throw to.

Now you make the call. If the Raiders had free pickens on one of these guys, who would it be?

Is Tom Cable The Man or Another Myth for Oakland Raiders

Well the verdict is in and it looks like Tom Cable with hold the reins for the Oakland Raiders next season.

Here's a decision that may come as a surprise to some but expected by others.

Is Tom Cable the right person to lead the Raiders next season?

Cable has done one thing in the Raiders locker room that has been missing since Jon Gruden got fired—teamwork. It's obvious when players start to work together and have a good sense of camaraderie in the locker room.

The beginning of any good team starts with the energy in the locker room. You don't need "superstars"—you need "super people."

Just ask the 2001 New England Patriots.

Cable is a man of democracy though.

He can't do it alone. Cable needs to have a strong staff around him to be successful.

Radiers GM Al Davis is going to play a huge part as well. Cable should not be a puppet, but at the same time, he should not bump heads with Davis.

A lot of us know the mistakes Cable has made in some of his play-calling.

I say let the man learn from his mistakes. I dont think we'll see any 70-yard field goals from Sebastian Janikowski next season.

Oakland can make their move in 2009. San Diego is on a decline, Denver is leaderless as far as the Raiders are concerned, and Kansas City...Well, we all know how they are doing. It's very possible the Raiders can be 10-6 with the right attitude. Look for a possible playoff birth, and maybe more.

Now that the team is on the right track with Cable, I want to see some good coaches around him.

In addition, the Raiders scouting team needs to be revamped. There's a lot of work to do and such little time to plan for it.

Jamarcus Russell is developing, and the running game is looking like a fast train.

Cable can make this work.

He has a large load to carry, but it's surely not impossible.

The Raiders are in dire need of a face lift. Can Cable give it to them?

We'll all find out next season.

LaDainian Tomlinson: Will He Ever Get a Ring? Not in San Diego!

The NFL is an acronym: Not For Long!

Today's game is much different than that of 10 to 15 years ago. "Back in the day," players would stay with the teams that drafted them until it was time to retire, get traded, or unfortunately they got hurt.

What is so sad is that many great players never had the chance to get a ring because their team was not capable of getting to the big show.

We all know of some of these fantastic players that should have a Super Bowl ring but don't. Let's talk about a few before we dig in on LT.

1. Barry Sanders

One of the greatest running backs in NFL history, and surely one of the most prolific. After a beautiful college career in Oklahoma State he received the Heisman Trophy as a junior and left for the NFL.

Many people wondered why he retired early.

Several years after retirement, and repeated refusals to discuss the abruptness of it, Sanders finally admitted that the culture of losing in the Lions' organization was too much to deal with, even though he said that he could still play. He explained that it robbed him of his competitive spirit, and he saw no reason to believe things were going to improve.

2. Dan Marino

Dan Marino was amazing. His arm strength was tremendous and his release was incredible. Dan has had or still has every record in the NFL for a quarterback and drove the Dolphins into the playoffs on numerous occasions.

Marino had a rocky senior year at the University of Pittsburgh. Knee injuries and alleged cocaine use crippled his draft spot.

Miami chose Marino with the 27th pick of the NFL draft and he went on to be the first ever rookie to start in the Pro Bowl. He had one shot at a ring but lost that chance to Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XIX.

3. Dan Fouts

Dan Fouts was great. He led the Chargers to four playoff appearances from 1979 to 1982 and twice made the AFC Championship. He was a six-time Pro Bowl selection (1979-1983, 1985) and compiled passer ratings over 90.0 for a three-year stretch (1981-83).

Now, I know there are plenty more players to name, but these three stand out in my mind as some of the greatest players in the game without a ring.

Tomlinson is about to have the same fate. San Diego will not get him to the big show. They went to one Super Bowl back in 1995 and lost.

The team chokes. Plain and simple.

The last two years the Chargers should have been "rockin' and rollin'" into the big game, but they choked.

With Norv Turner there, as a GM hire, they will not have a chance again. The team is going downhill, and L.T. is getting older.

Players don't have the same commitment to teams that they used to. Now players are committed mostly to the money.

L.T. may be different. He is an amazing player with an awesome attitude.

Unfortunately, that might be his downfall.

LaDainian Tomlinson needs to get onto a team that has a chance to go all the way. I would hate to see him fall into that "great player with no ring" category.

So I say fly, L.T. Fly away from San Diego and get yourself a ring. You deserve it!

The National Football League Needs To Expand To Las Vegas, Nevada.

Did someone say Las Vegas needs and NFL team? YEP!

Las Vegas, Nevada has many things to do, but it's missing a huge piece of culture...Professional Sports!

Now I know I've heard all the down sides:

The most prominent issue is the perceived problem of legal sports betting. This could pose a problem, with no betting on the Las Vegas team, what happens if they make the Super Bowl? No bets on the Super Bowl?

All four major sports leagues have strong anti-gambling policies, prohibiting their personnel from having any involvement in gambling. The NFL has taken the toughest (and arguably most unreasonable) stance, refusing to accept Las Vegas tourism advertising for Super Bowl telecasts and threatening to file suit against any local hotels holding Super Bowl parties.

Another negative is that some potential owners believe a professional sports franchise would have difficulty gaining an audience, given Las Vegas' numerous entertainment options. And what about the people that work odd hours due to a 24-hour town?

Another huge obstacle is the lack of suitable facilities! Tomas & Mack wont cut it, Silverbowl is outdated, and the casino's won't commit. So where would they play? Build, Build, BUILD!

I know with the economic downturn in Las Vegas, this is going to be even harder. When the economy was booming no sports facilities were built, and now there is no funding.

Professional sports might already be in Las Vegas if city leaders had the foresight to build facilities not controlled by outside interests when it was feasible.

Las Vegas would be a "Gold Mine" for professional sports, especially the NFL. It would bring a new culture and form of entertainment to a city looking for new ways to attract attention. Build a beautiful new "DOME" stadium and let the games begin.

By 2015 Las Vegas should have a professional Football Team! The city was supposed to have a stadium built by 2010 to host professional games... Hasn't even started yet!

It's time for Las Vegas to grow up and make some moves toward a complete place to live and grow. The NFL is the key and Las Vegas is the Lock.

So let's go Oscar Goodman, Make it happen!

and remember...........Always bet on Black!

A little side note on something I found on Wikipedia:

Professional outdoor football has been attempted twice in Las Vegas. The XFL's Las Vegas Outlaws and the Canadian Football League's Las Vegas Posse. Both teams folded after only one season of play. The XFL folded outright, while the Posse were a failure at the box office and part of the CFL's failed U.S expansion attempt.

Posse QB Anthony Calvillo went first overall in the 1995 dispersion draft of Posse players, and went on to have a stellar career in Canada.

Oakland Insider: The Great John Madden To The Rescue For The Oakland Raiders!

Hello sports fans, this is another article from the Oakland Insider. This article is going to stir up some serious conversation, from good to bad.

It's time to bring John Madden back to the Raiders as the GM. That's right Al, call up the Big Man and give him total control of your ballclub and you will see some wins and championships before it's too late!

Madden's lively and flamboyant delivery has won him critical acclaim and fourteen Sports Emmy Awards for Outstanding Sports Event Analyst. Madden is also known for his loud and straight forward attitude. "Call it like it is."

I grabbed some info from Wikipedia that I would like to share:

NFL

1967–1975

Building on that success, Madden was hired as linebackers coach for the Oakland Raiders in 1967, and helped the team reach Super Bowl II that season. A year later, after Raiders head coach John Rauch resigned to take the same position with the Buffalo Bills, Madden was named the Raiders' head coach on Feb. 4, 1969, becoming pro football's youngest head coach at the age of 32.

Madden's overall winning percentage including playoff games ranks first in league history. He won the Super Bowl and never had a losing season as a head coach. Madden has a winning record as a head coach against other future Hall of Fame head coaches.

However, the team endured continued frustration over coming up short in the playoffs, especially against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Five title-game losses in seven years left the Raiders with the same image that the Dallas Cowboys had previously had—as a team unable to "win the big one."

Despite a 12–1–1 mark in 1969, the team lost 17-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs in the final American Football League championship game.

Three years later, what appeared to be a last-minute victory over the Steelers instead became a part of football lore when Franco Harris's "Immaculate Reception" gave Pittsburgh a 13–7 win. Then, in 1974, after defeating the two-time defending Super Bowl winner Miami Dolphins in dramatic fashion, the Raiders lost again to the Steelers in the AFC Championship game.

1976

In 1976, the team's luck finally changed when the Raiders put together a 13-1 regular season, escaped the first-round of the playoffs with a dramatic and highly controversial victory over the New England Patriots, then defeated the Steelers for the AFC Championship.

Then, on Jan. 9, 1977, Madden's team finally captured their first Super Bowl with a convincing 32–14 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

1977–1978

The Raiders lost the AFC Championship Game in 1977 to the Denver Broncos with Madden battling an ulcer for most of the season. He retired after the 1978 season when the Raiders failed to make the playoffs.

Madden retired not only with a Super Bowl ring to his credit, but was the youngest coach ever to reach 100 career regular season victories, a record he compiled in only ten full seasons of coaching at the age of 42.

...

So now we sit back and ponder what could help the Raiders regain some pride in the NFL. John Madden back with the Silver & Black? Probably far fetched but hey, what the heck, we're the Raiders!

John Madden would bring a whole new meaning to the locker room as GM of the Nation. At the age 72 he still poses a ton of life and leadership.

Madden has a great grasp on the game and always has had a heart for the Raiders. Madden and Al Davis have always been friends and this hook up wouldn't be too far fetched as it stands.

Now will madden want to come back to the grind? I think he might! Madden would give the Raiders the boost they need, along with some crucial acquisitions.

So, Tom Cable would work for Madden, and the Raider nation would win the Division! I say bring the Maddenology back to the Raiders and "Just Win, Baby!"

Now, let the comments begin...

Oakland Insider: Who's The Man for the Oakland Raiders?

Hello again sports fans, it's time for another Oakland Insider Article.

With the massive amount of reads, comments, and votes in the previous article talking about Michael Bush, I have decided to break out a complete topic in regards to the Running Backs in Oakland.

There is a lot of talk that the Oakland Raiders are actually heavy in one position, Running Back. This is a very interesting subject since the Raiders have had the worst stretch of their franchise history. Is there a change coming?

Here is a little breakdown on each Running backs in Oakland...

Justin Fargas: In 2003, Fargas joined the Raiders from the third round pick of the draft. His beginning role with the Raiders was a return man. In 2004 and 2005 he was a back up. In 2006 (Mid-Season) he became the starter when Lamont Jordan went out with an injury. In 2007 Fargas get's his first 1,000 yards rushing in a single season. Fargas had the best day of his career on September 30, 2007, rushing for 179 yards on 22 carries against the Miami Dolphins. The biggest set back for Justin Fargas is his inability to get into the end zone.

Darren McFadden: McFadden was drafted in the first round of the 2008 draft. McFadden had a stellar career in college and came to the Raiders with high hopes. McFadden has struggled his first year in the NFL due mostly to injury. Turf Toe in both feet have given McFadden hell this year. He still managed to put together 784 all purpose yards this year and four scores. McFaddens biggest set back is his health, he must prove he can stay healthy to show what he can really do.

Michael Bush: Bush was drafted in the Fourth round on the 2007 draft. Michael Bush had a hard road to become a NFL Running Back. Bush suffered a broken leg in his final year of college. After two years of healing Bush came to his own in 2008. Two games stand out, Kansas City and Tampa.

Michael Bush had his best day in the NFL against Tampa with 177 yards rushing and two scores. Bush's biggest set back is his inconsistency, although mostly not his fault due to limited playing time.

So the question iin Oakland is what do we do with three good running backs? The answer might seem to easy, Keep McFadden and Bush and Trade Fargas. Well that may or may not be the "right" choice for this tandem.

Everyone knows what happened this year in Denver. The Broncos went into the final game of the season starting their sixth running back for the year.

Oakland has three guys that can start, but who is the right choice? McFadden has amazing ability, but can he stay healthy enough to carry the workload of a starter? Bush looks great but have we seen enough of him? Fargas has become a fantastic option but can he score?

In closing I'm going to take a position and state my opinion on this matter. Oakland will use Bush and McFadden next year as a one-two punch. A lot of teams in the NFL are moving to a two back set up to save the Running Backs from injury and sheer wear down. Either get a good draft pick or trade for O-Line with fargas. Get something good in return for a good running back.

If Oakland keeps fargas, I wouldn't be suprised to see him as the third back in the roster. Due to his high salary that would be very hard on the Raiders to do.

The Oakland Raiders have some thinking to do with the running backs. Heck at least there's something to ponder in an off season where they will be looking for answers.

Go Raiders!

Oakland Insider: Could Michael Bush, Bill Parcells Lead Raiders' Future?

Hello sports fans, this is another edition of Oakland Insider, and what an article to read!

Hot topic? Yes! The Oakland Raiders are stirring up some serious conversations around the Nation, and it's hot.

Oakland capped off the last game of their season beating the despised Bucs, 31-24. Chucky wasn't very happy about losing to his old team and missing the playoffs, but we the people of the Raider Nation were!

Michael Bush had his best game of his professional career Sunday against the Bucs. With running backs Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden banged up, Bush got the nod, and boy was he up for the opportunity.

Bush's performance was a big surprise; we hadn't seen much from him since Week Two against Kansas City. What a job he did, though, totaling 177 yards on the ground with only 27 attempts. Did I mention two touchdowns as well, with one going 67 yards to the house? Bush was on fire in Tampa!

What's in store for Oakland in 2009? There are many questions to be answered and we can only speculate until it all unfolds. One thing is for sure, the Raiders need a GM.

OK all my fellow sports fans (Raider Nation fans) try something with me...Close your eyes and image Bill Parcells walking into Al Davis's office. Davis extends his old wrinkled hand and Bill shakes it with some hesitation.

Davis says "Bill, I have come to a point in my life where I want to see some wins before I pass into the night."

Parcells says "OK, what does this have to do with me?"

AND....Davis says "I want to offer you a no-holds-barred GM position with a no-interruption clause, meaning my hands are completely off and the team is all yours—JUST WIN BABY!"

After a few silent moments, Parcells says "I'm in."

Wow, what a thing to think about, Raider fans. This team with the talent they already have, plus what Parcells would bring to the table, what a dream that would be. I know it sounds really far-fetched, but what the hell, sounds great.

Until next time, Raider fans, this is Farris Gunning II with Oakland Insider, and farewell to all and GO silver and black!

Chargers-Broncos: Win or Go Home, It's Just that Simple!

This Sunday will determine the fate of both teams. The Broncos and Chargers are fighting to make the playoffs and they are playing each other.

The NFL's highest-rated passer threw for 287 yards and four touchdowns Sunday, helping the Chargers beat Tampa Bay 41-24 to keep their playoff hopes alive.

After their third straight win, in what amounted to elimination games for a team that began the season with expectations of reaching the Super Bowl, San Diego (7-8) got help when Buffalo beat Denver 30-23. The Broncos and Chargers meet this Sunday in San Diego in a showdown for the division title.

This is nothing new for either team. Being division rivals, they meet twice every year. Many times their games decide who goes and who sits at home and watches the playoffs on the couch like the rest of us.

San Diego certainly has the momentum, having won three straight, to force this play-in game. And the Chargers have the emotional push of the Ed Hochuli call back in Week Two. San Diego can not come this far and then lose, though it will be a dogfight...Win or go home: It's just that simple!

My prediction is Chargers win 27-20

The game is Sunday night, the whole nation will be watching, so let's have a good game, and may the best team win.

Buccaneers-Raiders: Oakland Looks for Revenge in Tampa

After years of suffering, including an 0-26 start as a franchise in the mid-70s, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII with a dominating defensive performance against the Oakland Raiders at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

The Buccaneers' defense held the Raiders to just 19 yards on the ground, and they picked off quarterback Rich Gannon five times, including three that were returned for scores, as they knocked off Oakland, 48-21, for their first Super Bowl championship. (About.com)

This has been ringing in the Raiders' locker room ever since! The Raiders lost a great coach in Jon Gruden, but that's what Al Davis does. Now with Tom Cable at the helm the Oakland Raiders are heading across the map to Tampa Bay for what looks to be a smash mouth game.

The Raiders want revenge! Can Cable get his team to work together like they did against Houston? We will all have the answer to this question on Sunday.

Gruden knew what to do against the team he built, but will he know what to do against a desperate team?

The Raiders are going to come into this game with nothing to lose and everything to gain. With a win by Oakland, not only do they get something to look forward to next year by winning a couple of good games this year, but they get revenge—revenge against the man who built the last good team in Oakland.

J-Russ has his work cut out for him because Tampa Bay will not be easy. Gruden will want to destroy the team owned by the man he despises...Al Davis! McFadden must come in and use all of his talents and hope that the O-Line can hold up.

If everything goes well for the Raiders, they win...28-17. If the Raiders come out and play like they have 70 percent of the time this year, they lose...31-7. Let's just see what happens on Sunday.

Go Raiders!

Matt Cassel's Future Part II: Playoffs Raise His Value to Pats

As the season comes to an end, the New England Patriots are looking to make the playoffs. Matt Cassel, who took over the team this year due to an injured Tom Brady, has stepped up to the plate and hit a home run.

When the year began, all eyes were on Tom Brady. Understandably so considering he is amazing on the field and gave the Patriots an undefeated season last year until the Super Bowl.

When Brady went down in the first game, no one knew what to expect. Who is this Matt Cassel? Well I think we all know who he is now!

When the Patriots drafted Cassel in the seventh round (230th overall) of the 2005 draft, I don't think they even realized who they got.

In the 16th game of this season Cassel made another huge leap in his Pro Football career. Cassel led the Patriots to a 47–7 blowout win through snow, sleet, and rain in the Patriots' last regular-season home game of 2008. Cassel, playing in snow for the first time ever, came up strong with 20-of-36 passes completed for 345 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions.

The Patriots are still in the hunt for the playoffs, will this raise Matt Cassel's value to them? I would have to say YES!

As I mentioned in Part I of this topic, Cassel is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2009.

In the wake of his performances against the Jets and the Cardinals (in the snow) and the uncertainty over Brady's recovery, NFL analysts and reporters have raised the question of whether the Patriots should, or will, apply the franchise tag to him. My question for them is how much is he worth now?

Can we believe that less than three months ago some of those same reporters predicted Cassel would be cut from the team? Unbelievable!

The NFL's Playoff Bubble: Who's on It and Who Will Pop It?

The NFL has a bubble and some teams are looking like it might burst on them. The AFC has some interesting games this week to decide many teams future. Denver & Chargers head to head for a spot, The Raiders meet up against the Bucs to try and spoil there hopes, and maybe a little revenge from the last good year the Raiders had when they got destroyed by the Bucs in the Superbowl. The NFC has match ups to decide fate also... How about the Cowboys? In the start of the season, Dallas was picked as one of the best NFC teams and now they are struggling to make the playoffs, they need a win! The Vikings (9-6) and the Bears (8-6)are battling for a spot this weekend also. Here are a few more teams with some soul searching needed for their future...The Baltimore Ravens at 10-5, need to win this weekend to gain the No. 6 seed as a wild card. Miami should make the playoffs, if the win they will win their Division and gaurantee a spot. The New England Patriots, who just had a huge win in the snow are fighting for a spot also, their 10-5.
Begin Slideshow

Breaking News In Oakland: Al Davis Has Eye On New Quaterback For The Raiders

Ladies and Gentlemen, breaking news...

The Oakland Raiders scouting team was seen at President Bush's speech on Sunday. Muntadhar al-Zaidi, a reporter for the TV channel Al-Baghdadia was the man in lime light Sunday at the conference. Al-Zaidi threw two shoes at President Bush with such accuracy the soon to be X-President had to duck. "We haven't seen a throw with that accuracy and speed since Rich Gannon," say's Oakland's scouting team.

We are in negotiations with al-Zaidi now to firm up a contract for the next season. With JaMarcus Russell failing miserably at the position, Oakland was forced to look for new blood.

It just so happens that the Oakland scouting team was at the press conference just in case something exciting were to happen, since NOTHING in Oakland has been exciting for a while. Low and behold there he was, standing in the pocket while defenders were charging after him, taking him to the ground. al_Zaidi managed to get off both shoes, hurl them at Bush's head before he hit the ground.

We hope to see al-Zaidi in a uniform before too long and maybe get some playing time this season.

Go Raiders!!!!!! Good Luck!!

Fantasy Pro Basketball: Who Would Be on Your NBA Dream Team?

If there was no timetable to seperate the great players of the National Basketball Association, who would be in your perfect fantasy lineup?

There are many players in the NBA that stand out in people's minds. Clutch shooters, power dunkers, defensive kings, and, of course, the passing perfectionists.

Putting together your "Dream Team" can take some time and serious thinking. I've put together what I believe would be the most unstoppable team ever. Obviously there will be a lot of room for conversation due to a ton of great players.

Center—Shaquille O'Neal

Shaq is one of the (arguably the No. 1) strongest players in this position. Shooting may not be great, but his strength is un-matched. He can stop anyone who tries to come into the paint. Shaq has four championships, three with the Lakers and one with the Heat.

Honorable mention: William "Bill" Russell

Power Foward—Tim Duncan

This guy is solid! With his size and ability to nail the bank shot, Tim has dominated teams for a long time. He has four championships and three MVP awards.

Small Forward—Larry Bird

This was the hardest position for me to choose. This position has and has had many great players including Scottie Pippen, LeBron James, Julius Erving, John Havlicek, Chris Mullin, etc. The reason I choose Bird is because there hasn't been a better clutch shooter (any shooter for that matter) with the passing ability and team ethic that he had. Larry Bird has three rings.

Shooting Guard—Michael Jordan (Who Wouldn't?)

Six titles (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998). Fourteen-time All-Star, five-time MVP (1988, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1998), six-time Finals MVP, Rookie of the Year (1985), Defensive Player of the Year (1988). "Air Jordan was the most skilled, most athletic, toughest, meanest, most inspirational, and most competitive of all the shooting guards who have ever played the game," according to ESPN. Need I say more?

Honorable mention: Kobe Bryant

Point Guard—Ervin "Magic" Johnson

Magic was a nickname he got by the way he played on the court; he did some magical things. Magic has five rings. He not only could shoot and play defense, his ability to pass was amazing! He could thread a pass and probably the best alley-oop in history. His hook shot was beautiful, also.

Honorable mention: John Stockton

We can only imagine Magic passing to Jordan, Shaq and Duncan power-housing the boards and Larry Bird nailing three-pointers all on the same team. What an amazing thing to watch!

The Oakland Raiders Are Infected and Need a Cure!

Now there are millions of articles and writings on how bad the Raiders are. This article is going to focus more on the cure rather than the disease.

Since 2002, the Oakland Raiders have looked like a team in disarray! We all know that! First finger pointed always goes toward Al Davis. I agree, until Al is gone, this team may always be fighting an uphill battle.

Here are some things that might get the Raiders back on track even though their owner is a loon.

1. Al must incorporate a GM. One that will have the balls to go against Al when needed, but always have his back. If the GM doesn't have Al's back then he'll be out on his butt like everybody else, so that's important. The GM and Al will work together on the draft picks, coaching staff, etc...

2. The Raiders must put into place a coach and give him a chance to build a team. Give him some time. A coach needs time to establish a rapport with his players.

It takes time to mold them into a team, not individual players playing for themselves. The players must trust each other and gain a concrete mentality to the teams expectations. The head coach is like the head of a snake, cut it off and you kill the snake... The coach must be in place with the fundamentals of what Al wants but turn the team into his own.

3. The players need to play every down with heart! The players must make the plays and make the tackles. Of course this goes hand in hand with the coach. The players are their own people and they make the plays, so they need to be held accountable for it.

In closing: The Oakland Raiders go into every year looking good on paper. They draft a lot of talent, they trade for talented players, and then... They come out and play football like a buch of self-centered children, with NO heart.

Note to Al: Change your people or change your people mentality isn't working, put in place people to make your people better! It starts from the top. We all know Al Davis has forgotten more about football than most will ever learn, but it's time to put people in place to lead this team to a championship, it will take a while, but you must start from somewhere.

The Oakland Raiders need HEART!

Matt Cassell's Future: Will The New England Patriots Franchise Tag Him?

That's right folks, Matt Cassell's contract is up!

This must have been a blessing from the heavens for Matt Cassell. Tom Brady goes out with a season ending injury and Cassell get's a chance to show off his stuff. It's unfortunate that Brady got hurt because you never want to see a Prime Time QB (or any player for that matter) get hurt.

Matt Cassell has stepped up to the plate for the opportunity to lead the New England Patriots this year.

In the season opener Tom Brady went out with an ACL and MCL tear, Cassell got his chance to lead. Cassell lead the Patriots to a 17-10 win throwing for 152 yards and one touchdown.

So far this year Cassell has emassed 1892 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has also ran for about 200 yards and took has put two touchdowns under his belt on the ground.

Cassel became the first New England Patriot to throw for 300 yards and rush for 50 yards in the same game. Cassell is also the first player (since the NFL merger) to have 400 passing yards and 60 rushing yards in the same game.

In week 10 against Buffalo, the Patriots held the ball for 37 minutes. The final 19-play drive, which lasted over nine minutes, tied a franchise record for most plays in a single drive.

Cassel, in the last year of his four-year rookie contract, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in 2009. The question is whether the Patriots (with Tom Brady's recovery in question) will slap the franchise tag on him.

Cassell would be a starter on many of the teams in the NFL, and obviously his income is going to increase! Currently Cassell only makes $750,000 a year, and we all know he'll be looking for more next year.

Can New England afford to let him go at this point?

Chargers-Raiders: San Diego Kills All Hopes For Oakland!

What a week for the San Diego Chargers!

I was at the game this Thursday and besides an amazing return for a touchdown, the Oakland Raiders were as stale as a 5-year-old potato chip. There was absolutely zero energy on the Raiders sideline.

JaMarcus Russel was out of it from the Raider's first offensive series. His fumble put the Chargers in scoring position immediately as the game took on a surreal quality.

Oakland's fleeting hopes for the playoffs are officially over. Now we look to next season, or maybe the one after. The Chargers, on the other hand, are still on track to have a chance for the division title. They need to win out and have Denver stumble, but they still have a chance. The Raiders will now being playing for pride.

I usually will go to the Raiders home games, but this time I went with a couple of Charger fans to experience their house, my first time at QualComm stadium. The parking lot and stand were full of the Raider Nation, but the score was a different story.

It seemed very odd that the Charger fans weren't out in a larger force but the team on the field didn't care as they pounded the Oakland Raiders on Thursday night.

This Oakland team needs continuity! There is a large, black hole in the middle of this team and I don't think I have seen a team in more disarray.

Where did the legendary team of the Oakland Raiders go?

Find Peace Within Yourself and Not from Slamming Others!

Now I know this isn't a sports article but it needs to be said! This is an outstanding forum. Many people with awesome idea's group up here and have fantastic conversations and debates.

This is one of the best places to find discussions on past, present, and future topics. Learn things that you may not have known, or just great reading.

I've been reading articles and posts in here for a long time, so about a week and a half ago I decided I want to a writer in here. I jumped in with both feet.

One thing I found out real quick is that there are a handful of people who just cant live with themselves. They love to attack people and make people feel like crap because of their idea's or writings. Well, all I can say is write on my friends!

We are here because we want to be, not because someone said we had to be. I love a place where people come together because of common likes and dislikes. A place where we can express feelings, idea's, and hopeful gain some insight on what others may think.

So a word to those who croos post and create all these different handles to hide themselves. BEAT IT! If you don't like who you are please don't spread the negativity, this world has enough with out you.

To all of us who are here because we like and want to be, write on...Post on...and "scroll past the trolls."

Have a great holiday to all, and indulge in the site that 4 great guys created for us to enjoy! Thanks and Good day!

Oakland Raider Fans Are Turning Green! What the Hell Is Going On in Oakland?

This is probably the worst I have ever seen the Raiders. I have been a Raider fan for as long as I've know about the sport, and I'm disgusted! What in the hell is Al Davis thinking? Can anyone answer that question?

Ever since 2001 (Gruden's last year), the Oakland Raiders have been falling apart faster than Al Davis himself...

In 2002, the Oakland Raiders (riding on Gruden's coat tails) got all the way to the Super Bowl, where Jon Gruden destroyed the team he built.

In 2003, The Raiders start their downward spiral that would last until this very day. Losing most of their great players due to age, retirements, and trades didn't help the situation at all.

I don't think I need to explain what happened for the next five years since the Oakland Raiders could only put together 22 wins since the Superbowl of 2002 season.

Here's my assessment of what needs to happen in Oakland. First of all, Al Davis, retire! Second, hire a head coach and keep him for at least a few years so he may build a team and maybe get them to work together and trust each other on the field. Third, our scouting dept. needs an overhaul!

Young talented recruiters to scout out players that will work good for the team.

Oakland is in turmoil and needs help, but until No. 1 happens (yeah, Al Davis, retire!), nothing will change. How much more life can be in that man?

San Francisco 49ers Had It All: Who Was the Better QB in San Fransisco?

There was a time when the San Fransisco 49ers had two of the best quarterbacks of all time, but who was better?

Joe Montana

Joseph Clifford Montana Jr, nicknamed "Joe Cool" was the starting QB for the San Fransisco 49ers from 1980-1991. He was a member of the 49ers in 1979 but only threw 23 passes due to being a backup to Steve DeBerg.

In Montana's career with San Fransisco, he took the team to four Super Bowls and won every time.

Montana had many comebacks in his career, 26 with the 49ers. Joe also amassed 35,142 yards with 244 touchdowns and only 123 interceptions in his career with the 49ers. He also had 35 games where he threw for over 300+ yards (seven 400-yard games included!)

Joe Montana finished his career with the second-highest QB rating of 92.3 behind only his successor Steve Young. In Joe's career, his record of 117-47 is incredible.

Joe Montana finished his career with Kansas City. In his final year in th NFL he battled his once backup Steve Young and the 49ers and won 24-17. He lead his team to his final playoff game that same year.

Steve Young

Born Oct. 11, 1961, Steve Young was Joe's backup for many years with the 49ers. Steve Young also played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a while.

Steve Young was the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1992 and 1994. He was the MVP of Super Bowl XXIX, as well. Steve Young was introduced into the NFL Hall of Fame in 2005. Steve Young was the first left-handed QB to do so.

Steve Young went to BYU for college where his senior year he produced 3,902 yards and 33 touchdowns, with a 71.3 percent completion percentage.

With Steve's first team (Buccaneers) he wasn't so successful, throwing 11 touchdowns and 21 interceptions in 19 games, going 3-16 as a starter. When Steve went to the 49ers, he was Joe Montana's back up where he threw for 23 touchdowns and six interceptions in four seasons.

Steve Young took over the helm of starter for the 49ers in 1991. In his 15-year career, Steve Young amassed 33,124 yards, 232 touchdowns, and only 107 interceptions. He also managed 4,239 rushing yards, 2nd behind only Randall Cunningham. Steve Young also finished his career with the highest QB rating in history with 96.8.

So now the question is: Who was the Best 49ers QB of all time? You make the call!

Biggest Upsets in College Football History: USC or Michigan?

There have been many upsets in the past and present in college football, which one ranks as No. 1?

In 1942, Holy Cross, which was a 28-point underdog, beat Boston College 55-12. It was the largest point difference Holy Cross has ever had as an underdog.

In 1972, Missouri, which was a 35-point underdog, beat Notre Dame 30-26. That same year Notre Dame went on to the Orange bowl and met against the Nebraska Cornhuskers and lost 40-6.

In 2007, Appalachian State beat Michigan. A top-5 team losing to a Div I-AA school at home certainly ranks among the greatest upsets ever, but as was pointed out at the time, it wasn't the biggest upset in terms of the point spread.

USC losing to Stanford very well might be the biggest upset ever. Stanford was a 38-point underdog when the line opened and in some spots grew to 41 points, making the Cardinal win, quite possibly, the biggest upset in college history.

There are many not mentioned, but these stand out to me as some of the greatest upsets ever. What do you think?

Winless Detroit Lions Need to Do Some Soul Searching

After a dismal Thanksgiving, the Detroit Lions have a difficult reality to face. Without a single notch in the win column, the season is hard for them to swallow.

There have been numerous games where the Lions looked to gain their first win just to watch it slip away. It's been a difficult journey for them to say the least.

Culpepper hasn't brought much to the party in Detroit. He was once a three-time pro bowler drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. He suffered a major injury in 2005 and has never been the same since. He has also played for Miami and Oakland where his success was very limited.

Rudi Johnson, another addition to the Lions this year, has done zilch for the team as well. Johnson, who was once a feared back for the Bengals, has now become just another back who doesn't produce in Detroit.

With zero wins for the season, the Detroit Lions must do some serious soul searching to determine whether or not they have the heart to win at least one game. A first pick in the draft will be nice, but what will they do with it? Will it be enough? There are a lot of holes on this team, so where will they start?

Oakland Raiders Do It Again, Beat Themselves Against Kansas City Chiefs

What was Oakland Raiders interim head coach Tom Cable thinking?

A fake field goal on 4th-and-10?

Now, I have seen many crazy plays in my life, but this one ranks among the highest in stupidity!

So much focus on beating the Denver Broncos in Denver that the Raiders gets whacked by the Kansas City Chiefs at home.

This is a perfect example of the Raiders beating themselves once again! How many times will they lose leads, make stupid plays, miss tackles, and commit ridiculous penalties until someone takes this team by the horns?

The Oakland Raiders have more issues than a weekday soap opera.

The owner is old and nuts.

The coaches are scared and don't make good decisions.

The players are lost and not making plays.

Is anyone in Oakland awake?

The Black Hole is truly a black hole now. A dismal, dark nothing. This season is just another one to add to the team's horrible recent years. The Raiders were once feared in the league as a great team, now they are the laughing stock of the NFL.

What's next for the Oakland Raiders?

The Raiders go into San Diego this Thursday to take on L.T. and the Chargers for a game that's all about pride.

Will they show up for that? No one knows.

Silver and Black Attack! Oakland Welcomes Kansas City to the Black Hole

It's time for Rival Chiefs to come into Oakland and deal with a team on the verge of breaking out. After their first meeting in September where the Raiders manhandled the Chiefs, they have had some issues putting things together.

This is no new place to be for the Raiders. They have made strides in games, looked really good, then fell on their faces! This team has been underachieving all year.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had their fare share of issues also, so this will be a very interesting game. If Oakland can control Larry Johnson, and blitz the QB until he sees nothing but Silver and Black, then this will be a great turnout.

Obviously the offense MUST come to the party in this game. It is essential that Russell takes his time and works that defence of Kansas City. Don't force it, J-Russ, or you'll come up short.

McFadden will be a vital part of this game also. The Raiders must put his abilities to work, use him for what he is good for. Fargas, well we all know he is a workhorse. Fargas will keep the D on their toes and McFadden can run it to the house at any time.

Let's not forget that Michael Bush is now the Fullback in Oakland. What does this mean? Well it means that there will be a handful of plays the Raiders can utilize now and also that there will be one big, strong man leading the way for Fargas and McFadden.

Ever since the debacle in Superbowl XXXVII when the Raiders were humiliated by the Gruden-led Bucs, they have been in a downward spiral. A game here and there has given us (Fans) small amounts of hope: the Miami game with Culpepper, beating Denver at home, etc.

But now is the time to capitalize on the momentum. The Raiders are not only playing for a chance to actually take their division, but for pride to. It's about time!

Just a bit of food for thought: The Raiders were the first team to make the playoffs as a wild card team and win the Super Bowl (Super Bowl XV) so let's do it again!!!

Kansas City, welcome to the Black Hole!

Oakland Insider: What's In Tom Cable's Future?

The head coaching job for the Oakland Raiders isn't the most secure job in football...That's for sure. There has been more coaches than Quarterbacks for the Oakland Raiders and they go through QB's like underwear. After the head office there in Oakland released Jon Gruden, I think we all thought "WTF?"

The Raiders have had a horrible past record against old coaches. (the Good ones) Shanahan has handed us our rear ends for years. Gruden humiliated us in the "Big Show". Heck, even Norv Turner beats us now. Luckily Lane Kiffin will go back to college so we can wipe the sweat off of our foreheads for that one.

So whats next in the coaching dept.? Can Al leave Tom Cable in there to work out the bugs and maybe get this team on track for respect again? Or will Crazy Al try Jim Fassel, who brings nothing to the table that Cable can't accomplish?

Note to Al: I'm with you no matter what decision you might make with the Raiders. I will support you Al because your the leader of this franchise...BUT... I need you to sit back and think for a minute. Stop throwing in and out coaches to try and fix something that needs more than just fixing! The Oakland Raiders need nurturing and building, not tyranny. I say give Tom Cable a chance to make this team a good, respectable, winning team again. I'm not Al though so we'll all just sit back and enjoy the ride, hopefully Al is listening.
