Are the Yankees Getting Their Money's Worth?

(Zell's Pinstripe Blog)

Found this interesting read on Gritty and Clutch, and I thought I would share it with you guys. He wanted to see if the Yankees were getting their money’s worth as a whole, and player to player. The graph brings up a interesting question though. Why are Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera so deep in the red?

Mariano Rivera has 36 saves (only 1 BS) and a 1.90 ERA so far this season. He is making $15 million this season. He is by far the best closer in the game. Mitre has more value than Rivera? Isn’t this analysis flawed?

And Alex Rodriguez? This chart doesn’t speak to A-Rod’s actual value to this team. Anyone who watches the Yankees play knows that they are far better with A-Rod on the team. He changes the whole game, because his presence in the lineup changes the way the opposing pitcher pitches to the batters around him.

You can’t measure Alex purely on statistics. It’s even harder to judge Alex because he has missed so much time this season due to injury. There is no way he would be able to live up to his true value when he has only played in 88 of 121 games so far.

This chart says that the market value of their production is lower than what they are being paid.

Reading the comments on this article brought up another interesting point. The idea that value cannot be measured solely by stats is so true. You can’t measure the impact A-Rod has on other players in the lineup, or the fear he strikes in pitchers.

It’s hard for any player to “live” up to their contracts, because so many players are getting overpaid these days. The market competition to land certain players drives up the prices in these contracts. Owners are willing to overpay for starting pitchers because there is such a big need to a team’s success.

Take it for what it’s worth..

———————————————————————————————————

Muhammad Ali to Be Honored Tomorrow Night at the Stadium

(Zell's Pinstripe Blog)

Muhammad Ali, AKA Cassius Clay, The Greatest, The Champ, The Louisville Lip will be honored in the Bronx tomorrow night. The Yankees will pay tribute to the three-time world heavyweight champion and 1960 Olympic gold medalist before tomorrow’s Yankee-Red Sox game.

One of the finest moments of his career was when he defeated Ken Norton in a 15-round decision to retain the heavyweight title at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 28, 1976.

Ali will be in attendance, along with Joseph Cinque, president of the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, to present Yankee Stadium and Yankees managing general partner/co-chairperson Hal Steinbrenner with the academy’s “Six Star Diamond Award”. The award is given for excellence in hospitality.

Source: Yankees Are Still in on Halladay

(Zell's Pinstripe Blog)

It looks as if the Yankees are still in the Halladay sweepstakes. It’s funny how officials said early on they wouldn’t land him, and now we sit here and hear we shouldn’t count them out. With Wang out and the rumors swirling around that the Red Sox are making a push for Doc you know the Yankees are paying close attention.

From NY Baseball Digest:

Our main Yankees source down in Tampa informed us on Tuesday afternoon that the Yankees are not, I repeat, not out of the Roy Halladay Sweepstakes. “Don’t count them out” is what we were told. “They are monitoring the situation and waiting patiently.”

So the question here is, is Brian Cashman waiting in the weeds like he did with Mark Teixeira, ready to pounce, or is he content to stand pat.? Two thing to remember here. They have not denied that they are still interested in Halladay and have also not told J.P. Riccardi no when it comes to any deal. We’ve been told that the possibility of the Red Sox swooping in and getting Halladay might have finally caught the Yankees attention. It will be very interesting to see what happens with all of this trade talk as the clock ticks down to PM on Friday.

I can’t say that I think they will get him, but I’m sure that they are involved. You can never count the Yankees out.

———————————————————————————————————

Joba Chamberlain Is Not Fit for Role Right Now

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

We all thought Joba Chamberlain was a starter, but as of right now he has shown us nothing but mediocrity since joining the rotation.

There are no excuses for it either. Do you guys realize what Joba said after the game?

Here is a blurb of what he was quoted as saying:

“I did a good job today, I felt like,” Chamberlain said. “They’re great hitters. I threw good pitches and they put good swings on it. They’ve been doing it all year. And they’re going to continue to do it.”

His line: 3.2 IP, 9 hits, 8 runs, 3 earned runs, 1 walk, 1 strikeout, 2 home runs allowed and 86 pitches (53 for strikes).

If he thinks he pitched a good game today then he is in denial. He was dreadful.

The earned runs are misleading and sure don’t show how bad he actually was.

He gave up eight runs over 3.2 innings, but an error by Cody Ransom changed everything.

After the error, Joba gave up a double, a single, a homer, and then another single. It’s not like the home run wasn’t his fault. It’s not like Ransom’s error made him give up the long ball.

In my mind, they were given up by Chamberlain.

How can you say “I did a good job” when you threw 86 pitches and you didn’t get through four innings?

This was by far the worst game of his career, but he hasn’t been anything special in any of his other starts.

Here is another interesting fact: Joba has started 16 games this year. In those 16 starts, he has recorded an out in the seventh inning in only three.

Yankees fans have to realize that he isn’t the same guy coming out of the pen.

You aren’t going to get the 99-100 MPH fastball that you got pitch after pitch out of the bullpen.

He has lost velocity on his pitches, he nibbles on the corners, he doesn’t challenge hitters, he hasn’t won a game at home, he has a WHIP of 1.52, and he thinks he is pitching well.

Clearly, he is also delusional.

Celebrating Lou Gehrig's Famous Speech 70 Years Later

(The Voice of Yankees Universe) http://nyyankeesrumors.com/celebrating-lou-gehrigs-famous-speech-70-years-later/

Lou Gehrig delivered baseball’s Gettysburg address on July 4th, 1939. It was the most inspirational event to ever occur on a baseball diamond. He delivered words of courage in the face of death in front of 61,808 fans. He resembled everything that was right in the game…courage, good sportsmanship and humility. Gehrig’s legacy will never be forgotten.

Here is the full text speech:

“Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.”Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn’t consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I’m lucky. Who wouldn’t consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball’s greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure, I’m lucky.”When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift — that’s something. When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies — that’s something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter — that’s something. When you have a father and a mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body — it’s a blessing. When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed — that’s the finest I know.

“So I close in saying that I might have been given a bad break, but I’ve got an awful lot to live for. Thank you.”

— Lou Gehrig at Yankee Stadium, July 4, 1939

The crowd stood and applauded for almost two minutes. Gehrig was visibly shaken as he stepped away from the microphone, and wiped the tears away from his face with his handkerchief. Babe Ruth came over and hugged him as a band played “I Love You Truly” and the crowd chanted “We love you, Lou.” The New York Times account the following day called it “one of the most touching scenes ever witnessed on a ball field”, that made even hard-boiled reporters “swallow hard.”

I believe this is the best audio clip you can find of his speech.

Here are the Letters of Lou. It’s a very interesting special report that ESPN’s Outside the Lines did. You should definitely take a look. In his final days, as he battled ALS, Gehrigwrote his personal thoughts on a serie of revealing letters. About the letters…

The paper is fragile, the ink faded by time, but the words Lou Gehrig wrote 70 years ago, after being diagnosed with ALS, reveal a man with inner strength and a clear sense of purpose in his determination to find a cure for the disease.

His words are now enclosed in protective plastic sleeves in a blue binder to be preserved for as long as possible. But that doesn’t make their impact any less emotional.

A-Rod Dating Kate Hudson?

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

Looks like A-Rod has found another woman, and her name is Kate Hudson. Alex and Hudson were seen together last month at a restaurant in New York City. The rumor is that they are dating now. Hudson has been to the New Yankee Stadium, as I remember the YES Network cameras showing her sitting in the front row.

Kate even followed Alex to Texas, when the Yankees were playing a three-game series against the Rangers last month. Kate and her five-year-old son Ryder stayed at the same hotel as Rodriguez.

“It’s somewhat serious,” the source tells People in its upcoming issue. “He introduced her to a bunch of his friends.”

For one of the games, she sent Ryder and his nanny to the ballpark while she “stayed behind and watched the game from the hotel,” adds the eyewitness. “She remarked several times about what a big baseball fan she is!”

The rumor going around is that she is a big baseball fan…

and another thing…..

Derek was caught ring shopping earlier this year, but when asked if he was engaged to Minka Kelly, he said, “The what?” Jeter asked incredulously. “Engagement rumors with who? I have not heard that.”

Pitching Matchups for the Tampa Series

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

The Yankees will open up a four-game series tonight against the Tampa Bay Rays. The first game is definitely the most exciting, as you will have CC Sabathia, who has been on a complete tear facing pitching phenom David Price.

Tonight: LHP CC Sabathia (5-3, 3.46) vs. LHP David Price (1-0, 3.00)

Saturday: RHP Joba Chamberlain (3-1, 3.71) vs. RHP Matt Garza (4-4, 3.67)

Sunday: RHP A.J. Burnett (4-2, 4.69) vs. RHP Andy Sonnanstine (4-5, 7.07)

Monday: LHP Andy Pettitte (5-2, 4.33) vs. RHP Jeff Niemann (5-4, 3.77)

Randy Johnson: Notches 300th Victory

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

"The Big Unit" has finally reached the 300 win milestone today, as he led the San Fransisco Giants to a 5-1 victory against the Washington Nationals. He didn’t really fit in well with the New York Yankees, but I was a big fan of his. I would say that he has been the most dominant starting pitcher of his generation. Whether it is his 6-foot-10 frame, his blazing fastball, or his amazing strikeout totals, I have always been fascinated with the guy.

He is the only one of twenty four players to ever reach the 300 win plateau. Randy is also only one of six lefties to ever reach 300 wins.

Anyone think he wants to reach 5,000K’s? He stands at 4,845 strikeouts right now, which makes him 155K’s away from that mark. It would be difficult for him to reach that mark this year unless he goes on a tear, and I would hate for him to come up a few short of that milestone.

Randy Johnson has compiled some insane numbers over the years: (W-L) 300-164 3.28ERA, 4845K, and a 1.17WHIP. The guy is a complete lock for Cooperstown and it has been a pleasure to watch him over the years. Congratulations to the Big Unit.

A-Rod Must Be Laughing…..

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

Putting everything that happened in Spring Training behind him, Alex Rodriguez must be feeling really good going forward.

He couldn’t have returned at a better time, with the Yankees coming off a five game losing streak.

The thing that would have driven him nuts was if the team was doing fine without him, but that didn’t happen. This way, Rodriguez could be the hero of the team, and it would show the fans that they actually do need him to be successful.

I never doubted his presence for a second. We all know what he brings to the table and what he is capable of.

Put whatever feelings you have for him to the side, and just root for him on the diamond. Nobody cares if you think he is a cheater, a liar, or a bum…the fact of the matter is that he is on the team now and that’s all that matters.

The Yankees have a 7-2 record since Rodriguez returned to the team. He has three home runs through 29 at-bats.

He hasn’t hit for average just yet, but you shouldn’t worry about that. The big thing is that he is hitting in clutch situations and that's all you can ask from him.

You all know the stats Rodriguez puts up, so you know damn well he won’t be sitting at a .172 average by the end of the season. His season has barely started.———————————————————————————————————

Yankees-Angels: Burnett Grinds It Out, Mariano Slams the Door, Yanks Win 7-4

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

A.J. Burnett wasn’t at his best tonight, but I would say he put up a solid start. He grinded through the game, and his pitching line was: 7IP 8H 4R 4ER 1BB 5K. Phil Coke pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and wound up picking up the win.

His record improves to 1-1. Mariano Rivera struck out two batters in the ninth, and picke dup his fifth save of the season.

The Yankees offense knocked in seven runs, on 12 hits, and they also drew five walks. Johnny Damon went 1-4, picking up a run, w alk, and an RBI. (Solo HR off of Ortega) Derek Jeter went 2-for-4, picked up a walk and an RBI.

Check out how good the bottom of the lineup was today:

Swisher: 1-for-2, 2 Runs, 2 Walks / Cabrera: 2-4, RBI, SB / Pena: 2-4, Run, 2RBI’s

The Yanks won 7-4, and move on to a record of 12-10 on the season. The team extends the wining streak to three games. Tomorrow’s pitching matchup will be LHP Andy Pettitte vs. RHP Jered Weaver.

Yankees-Angels: A.J. Burnett Looks to Make It Three in a Row

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

A.J. Burnett is coming off his worst outing of the season, and he is looking to bounce back in front of the home crowd.

The Yankees will get a crack at young Angels starter Anthony Ortega, who will be making only the second start of his major league career. Let’s watch and see if the balls fly out of the park tonight.

I hope the stands are more filled up for this series than they have been lately. Enjoy the game. Go Yankees!

New York (11-10) vs. Anaheim (9-11)

Pitching Matchup

RHP A.J. Burnett (2-0, 5.47) vs. RHP Anthony Ortega (0-1, 7.20)

Yankees Lineup (from Peter Abraham)

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
Posada C
Swisher RF
Cabrera CF
Pena 3B

Game News & Notes (from MLB.com)

Burnett last faced the Angels on July 4, 2008, for Toronto, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits over seven innings in an 8-2 Blue Jays loss.

Alex Rodriguez (right hip surgery) will serve as a designated hitter in an intrasquad extended spring game at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday in Tampa, Fla.

Swisher’s two-homer game on Wednesday marked his 12th career multi-homer game, the first since June 30, 2008, vs. Cleveland. Swisher has twice collected four RBI or more in a game this year, recording five RBI on April 9 in Baltimore.

Hideki Matsui is hitting .412 (14-for-34) in his last nine games and walked a career-high three times on Wednesday.

Girardi has 100 wins as the Yankees’ manager.

The game will take place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY. The game is scheduled to start at 7:05PM ET. The game will be televised on the YES Network and can be heard on the radio on WCBS 880.

———————————————————————————————————

New Book Says A-Rod Took Roids with Yankees

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

Alex hasn’t returned to the club just yet, and the news surrounding him is starting to flow faster and faster. This past spring, training was filled with as much news as we can handle, but it seems like Selena has a lot more to tell. Alex could possibly rejoin the Yankees within 10 days, and the new Selena Roberts book is set to be released around that time (on May 12). This woman is really starting to get on my nerves, and I’m sure a lot of Yankees fans are pissed off at her, as well.

The book also talks about his poker habits, his divorce, his relationship with Madonna, and other interesting stuff: you can tell that it’s going to get ugly. I want Alex back on this team as soon as possible, so I guess we are going to have to deal with all of this other crap, as well. We new this day was coming…

Some interesting bits and pieces:

SI writer Selena Roberts, who broke the story that A-Rod flunked a steroid screening in 2003, reveals fellow Bombers nicknamed the third baseman “B—h T–s” in 2005.

In addition, an unnamed major-leaguer is quoted as saying Rodriguez and steroid-tainted pitcher Kevin Brown were seen together with human growth hormone—HGH—in 2004.

Two other anonymous Yankees said they believed A-Rod was using, based on side effects they saw—and a clubhouse staffer said management wondered if he was using banned substances.

In one shocking disclosure, the book accuses A-Rod of “pitch tipping” when he was with the Rangers—letting a friendly opponent at the plate know which pitch was coming in lopsided games. Rodriguez expected players he helped would do the same for him when he was having an off-night and needed to get his batting average up, and it wouldn’t affect the outcome of the game.

Vote Your Yankees to the '09 All-Star Game

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

The voting has already started. Crazy..right? You can vote your Yankees to the 80th MLB All-Star Game, which will be held at Busch Stadium, in July 2009.

Yanks who won’t make it: Gardner & Nady

Yanks who deserve it: Posada, Cano, Jeter (& Swish) Maybe Damon..

A Yankee who doesn’t have great numbers just yet, but might get voted in: Teixeira

A Yankee who might make the team even though they haven’t played a game yet: Rodriguez

A Yankee who isn’t on the ballot, but definitely deserves it: Swisher

Let’s face the facts here. The All-Star game is a popularity contest, and the best players don’t always make it. The Yankees have a huge advantage considering they are in the biggest media market and have a huge fan base. Tex has gotten off slow, and he definitely could make the team. Players hit slumps, get injured, and turn a corner during the season. Who knows what will happen from now until the break, but that’s how I would break it down. Don’t forget to vote Nick Swisher as one of the Write-Ins on your ballot!

Cast your ballot now!

Steinbrenner's Facial Hair Policy and Those Famous Stache's

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

We all know about George Steinbrenner’s facial hair policy. When George first came over to the Yankees in 1973, the Yankees were standing for the National Anthem, (with their caps removed) and he said that the players hair was too long for his standards. He sent a message to Ralph Houk demanding that these players hair must be trimmed immediately.

The rule was that no male player, coach, or executive may wear any facial hair except for a mustache. They could also grow sideburns or mutton chops. The players hair was not allowed to be worn below the collar. This rule still stands today and it is one of the many unique and unusual things related to the Yankees.

Here are some of the incidents over the years involving facial hair: (Courtesy of Wikipedia)

The first such occurence happened during the 1973 home opener against the Indians. When the Yankees players, caps removed, were standing at attention for the National Anthem, Steinbrenner, in the owner’s box next to the New York dugout, noticed that the hair on several of them was too long for his standards. Not knowing the players’ names, he wrote down the uniform numbers of the offenders, who included Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer, Sparky Lyle and Roy White, and had the list, along with the demand that their hair be trimmed immediately, delivered to Houk. The order was reluctantly relayed to the players.[10]

In 1983, at Steinbrenner’s behest, Yogi Berra ordered Goose Gossage to remove a beard he was growing. Gossage responded by shaving away the beard but leaving a thick exaggerated mustache extending down the upper lip to the jaw line, a look Gossage still sports to this day.

The most infamous incident involving facial hair occurred in 1991. Although Steinbrenner was suspended, the Yankee management ordered Don Mattingly, who was then sporting a longish or mullet-like hair style, to get a hair cut. When Mattingly refused he was benched. This led to a huge media frenzy with reporters and talk radio repeatedly mocking the team. The WPIX broadcasting crew of Phil Rizzuto, Bobby Murcer, and Tom Seaver lampooned the policy on a pregame show with Rizzuto playing the role of a barber sent to enforce the rule. Mattingly would eventually be reinstated. Coincidentally, The Simpsonsepisode “Homer at the Bat,” which was filmed earlier that year, included Mattingly as a guest star who is suspended from play for the same reason despite having normal-length hair. In 1995, Mattingly again ran afoul of the policy when he grew a goatee. Steinbrenner publicly criticized him for it and Mattingly eventually trimmed it to a mustache. Mattingly is now clean-shaven as a coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers although the Dodgers do not have a facial hair policy.

David Wells occasionally wore a goatee and informed the media he would be willing to pay any fine to do so.

Mark Melancon..the Next Big Thing?

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

Mark Melancon (”Muh-LAN-son”) has been one of the most hyped players within the Yankees organization over the past few years. It’s well deserved though. The stats don’t lie. In 2008, Melancon compiled an 8-1 record, with a 2.27 ERA, and 89 K’s in 95 innings while playing for Scranton. In the small amount of time he has played this season in the minors, he was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 17 K’s in 10.1 innings.

He finally got the call up to the major leagues the other day with the bullpen in shambles. The loss of Brian Bruney in the bullpen gives the Yankees a big hole to fill, and many think Melancon can really help.

People hope he can have the same type of effect as Joba Chamberlain did in the bullpen. Obviously it’s hard to bring anyone up from the minor leagues and expect them to live up to that, but you never know. He definitely has the stuff. Mark has an above-average fastball with command, a power curve, and has great makeup.

On Mark Melancon…

“This guy wants to compete and will not get rattled,” minor league pitching coordinator Nardi Contreras said.

Melancon had a successful debut against the Red Sox in the last series. He recorded outs 1-2-3 very quickly in his first inning of work. In his second inning, he got caught up in a bases loaded jam, but he was able to get out of it without surrendering a run. His line was 2 IP 0.00 ERA 1H 1BB 1K.

———————————————————————————————————

If you haven’t checked out our new message board out..you should. Feel free to sign up and start posting!

Yankees' Austin Jackson Might Get the Call Sooner Than We Thought

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

With Brett Gardner struggling and the lack of faith people have in Melky Cabrera, could Austin Jackson be on the way to the big league club? A-Jack is hitting .340, with 11 R, 18 H, 0 HR, 10 RBI, 5 SB, a .410 OBP, .453 SLG, and an .863 OPS in 53 AB. He also has a great glove in the outfield. It’s not happening tomorrow or the next day, but it could come much sooner than expected.

Gardner is struggling to keep his average up and he needs to prove he can compete at this level. On the other hand, Cabrera came out of the gate really hot, but most doubt he can keep it up.

I am totally for them calling up Jackson. I’ve been waiting a while for this, and it looks like my wish may come true sooner than I thought. Many thought that he would be a September callup or something, but things change.

Here is the news from ESPN Insider:

From Sliding Into Home: "There was an ESPN Insider update posted within the last day or two about the Yankees center field situation.

"A source with knowledge of the Yankees’ thinking tells 1050 ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand that Austin Jackson could be the Yankees’ starting center fielder at some point this summer."

Checking in on the AL East…

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

A little over two weeks in the books and this is how the AL East looks. I don’t consider the Orioles or Blue Jays a serious candidate to win the division, or even stay close in the race so I’m not worried about them.

A lot of people have the Rays winning this division and all of a sudden they sit at a record of 5-9 at the bottom of the standings. The Red Sox are right on the Yankees tail. Interesting..huh?

I’m sure the standings will change a ton throughout the season (and I know it’s very early), but it’s always interesting to see how these teams start out in the beginning and finish at the end.

American League East Standings:

Toronto Blue Jays W-10 L-5

New York Yankees W-8 L-6 1.5GB

Boston Red Sox W-7 L-6 2GB

Baltimore Orioles W-7 L-7 2.5GB

Tampa Bay Rays W-5 L-9 4.5GB

Let’s not rush to judgment / The Mo and Andy Show / Undefeated no more

So Many Yankee Stadium Firsts…Many Expected, Some Not So Much

(The Voice Of Yankees Universe)

When the Yankees new stadium opened, there were some very obvious firsts that most fans were looking forward to, such as our first pitch, our first hit, our first home run, and our first win.

Those were celebrated as expected without a blink of an eye. What did get special attention, though, was Robinson Cano’s homerun that was the first to reach the stadium’s second deck.

Now think of all the potential firsts as those balls go flying all over the park (and you know the statisticians will be keeping track no matter how trivial a first they might appear to be).

Speaking of homeruns, the huge number of home runs given up by Yankee pitching over the first four games in the new ballpark was not as unique as most people think.

Similar numbers were achieved on several occasions in the old ballpark; the only reason these numbers stood out is because they were the first blowouts that took place in the new stadium. Again in the home run department, we also have our first replay that confirmed Posada’s home run (although not his first as we well know).

One Facebook member stated was very excited that she was holding a ticket to the first rained-out game, and it made no difference to her that she was on the train on the way to the stadium. How many people become excited knowing the game they were to attend was just rained out? That’s one first that most fans would prefer to be a last.

Then there was the first marriage proposal as Dave Pero proposed to Heather DeCarolis (she said yes). However, there will probably still be a first proposal rejection and an actual first marriage. First Bar Mitzvah anybody? Then there could be one’s First Communion, one’s Confirmation…

Next we have the first look at Yankee Stadium food. While Erin Zimmer did a fabulous job depicting stadium food by way of vivid photography on the website, “Serious Eats, New York,” the more exciting first bites of the new food will be happening by every fan at practically every game.

There is certainly enough of a variety of food to keep that particular first popular throughout the entire season.

Another first is Jason Giambi’s return to the stadium. I will add he got a warm welcome in his first introduction and got a hit in his at-bat.

It’s always interesting to see the fan reaction when any former Yankee returns to the stadium for the first time, but now these returns will have the distinction of being the first return to the new ballpark. So how many former Yankees are still playing on other teams? There should be lots of firsts in this area.

While I was very disturbed by the loss of our Opening Day game, I just realized that we have other important firsts still to come.

When the Red Sox and Mets come to our home, we NEED to beat them in our first game against them, and we NEED to win the first series against them as well. Of course, that “need” is not truly a need in the normal sense of the word, but it is truly a need in the abnormal sense of my mind.

I could probably write all day about potential firsts that are being experienced at every game in this one-of-a-kind stadium. All it takes is some imagination and the patience to keep on writing.

However, for those of you who prefer to glean over conventional firsts instead, here is a list of those “run-of-the-mill” firsts as elicited by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com:

First pitch: CC Sabathia, ball to Grady Sizemore, first inning
First hit: Johnny Damon, single, first inning
First home run: Jorge Posada, solo fifth inning
First RBI: Kelly Shoppach, double, fourth inning
First run scored: Ben Francisco, fourth inning
First putout: Sizemore groundout to first baseman Mark Teixeira, first inning
First hit (Indians): Francisco, double, second inning
First strikeout: Sabathia gets Victor Martinez swinging to end the first inning
First home run (Indians): Sizemore, seventh inning
First run (Yankees): Posada, fifth inning
First RBI (Yankees): Posada, fifth inning
First error: Tony Graffanino, throw to first base, fifth inning
First wild pitch: Cliff Lee, fourth inning
First victory: Lee, Indians
First loss: Jose Veras, Yankees
First caught stealing: Sizemore—Posada to Robinson Cano, fifth inning

Freddy “Sez” Needs Tickets

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

You’ve heard of him. Literally, I know you’ve all heard of him. Super-fan “Freddy Sez” Schuman, somewhat of a mascot for the New York Yankees, has been roaming Yankee Stadium with his signature pan and spoon, getting fans to try their luck at banging the pan to get a Yankee rally going.

Freddy Schuman

It’s as much a part of the aura of Yankee Stadium as the famous “roll call,” carried out during the first inning of each home game by our friend Bald Vinny. The famous clanking sound of the spoon hitting the pan can even be heard on television, a sure sign that the Yankees are home.

During a visit to Yankee Stadium in 1999, I actually got to try my hand clanking the spoon on the pot for Freddy, something along with my participation in the roll call in section 39 of the bleachers in 2004, which I will never forget.

However, during the first home stand of the new Yankee Stadium, an article in the Post revealed Freddy’s honorary pass into the stadium had some trouble translating across the street, as the soon-to-be 84-year-old had to rely on the generous fans who donated their tickets to him to get into the stadium to carry on his ritual.

The Yankees made Freddy an honorary guest years ago, so as you can imagine, Freddy was confused at what transpired during the opening home-stand.

“The Yankees say I am a part of the stadium. What part am I, the toilet bowl?” Schuman said. “But the fans have come through. They gave me $40, and even $100 tickets.”

Fortunately, everything was cleared up as a spokeswoman for the Yankees was quoted in the article as saying it was a “miscommunication, we love Freddy and will accommodate him.”

The Yankees did the right think in recognizing that it is not the organization that gives the ballpark its mystique, but its the fans and those little nuances like the roll call and Freddy Sez, who give the ballpark its character.

Game No. 12: Indians-Yankees: Wang Must Get It Together

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

Chien-Ming Wang has been completely dreadful in his first two starts of the season. It isn’t time to panic, but it is a concern.

Starting the season 0-2 with a 28.93 ERA is just unacceptable. I fully expected him to join the team and pitch like he did when he was healthy.

Maybe the lack of game action has effected him. I don’t want to make any excuses for the guy, but I think we all want to know what’s going on.

This afternoon, Wang will be opposed by RHP Fausto Carmona, who hasn’t been himself either so far this season. Let’s hope today is a different story for Wang.

Damon will serve as the DH today with Matsui is out of the lineup. Melky Cabrera is in left field and Ramiro Pena will be starting at third base.

Yankees prospect Anthony Claggett was called up today from Triple-A Scranton. Juan Miranda was sent down to make room for him on the roster.

New York (6-5) vs. Cleveland (3-8)

Pitching Match Up:

RHP Chien-Ming Wang (0-2, 28.93 ERA) vs. RHP Fausto Carmona (0-2, 9.00 ERA)

Yankees Lineup

Jeter SS
Damon DH
Teixeira 1B
Swisher RF
Posada C
Cano 2B
Cabrera LF
Gardner CF
Pena 3B

Game News & Notes:

Wang is 3-2 with a 2.97 ERA in five regular-season starts against the Tribe in his career.

The five home runs the Yankees hit on Friday were the most they’ve hit in a game since Aug. 1, 2007, against the White Sox.

Derek Jeter’s home run in the eighth inning was the 209th of his career, pulling him even with him Jason Giambi for 10th place on the Yankees’ all-time home run list.

Only one active Indians player, Grady Sizemore, has hit a home run off Wang. No active Yankees player has hit one off of Carmona.

The game will take place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. The game is scheduled to start at 3:40 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on FOX and can be heard on the radio on WCBS 880.

Robbie Cano Bursts Out of the Gate

The Voice of Yankees Universe

This offseason many fans were disgusted with the way Robinson Cano performed last season, and some were ready to trade him away. People thought he was being lazy and his drop in statistics last season drew a lot of fans attention. During the offseason, Cano worked hard with Kevin Long and it looks like it paid off.

April ‘08- .151AVG / April ‘09- .405 (so far)

We saw him start to turn it around toward the end of last season. He picked up 19 hits in his final 42 at-bats of the season. He is now 17-42 (.405) so far this season and it looks like he is answering the critics. We all know the amount of talent Cano has, but the problem was people didn’t think he was trying his best.

Cano is considered year after year as a batting title contender, and maybe this will be the year he gets it. I’m a big fan of Cano, so I’m really glad to see him playing so well. I expect big things from him this season, and so far so good.

———————————————————————————————————

New York Yankees: 161-1 Ain't Too Shabby

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

One game in the books and the Yankees stand at a record of 0-1, and they are currently fourth in the AL East (tied with the Rays).

We all wanted this season to start off on the right foot, and I know we all have high hopes for this team, but every season has it’s ups and downs.

Do I think C.C. had a terrible start? Yes, but he has the rest of the season to show us what he has. You don’t judge a player until the season is over, because you never know what may happen later on.

I don’t like those Mets fans who are already running their mouths about how they are 1-0 and we are 0-1. It’s one game—relax. Let’s see them not choke in September and then I’ll let them talk.

Am I going to go crazy if the Yanks win tomorrow and the Mets lose? No. I understand that it’s a long season and things can change very quickly.

Throughout the course of the season you will have injuries, struggling players, tabloid issues, and losing streaks. On the other hand, the team might be on a roll and everything is going well.

That’s the great part about baseball season—there is a long journey to the playoffs. We all know we aren’t winning 161 games, haha, but this team can surely have a heck of a season.

I have never seen a team with such talent in my life. Let’s hope that when A-Rod returns things will get even better.

Bob Sheppard Retires

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

According to the New York Times, Yankees PA Announcer, Bob Sheppard, will be retiring. This comes as sad news to many fans—including me. We all thought he was getting better, and that he was going to resume his role behind the mic at the new ballpark.

The man is 98-years-old, so it is understandable. There is no replacement for Sheppard as of now, but Jim Hall won’t be the guy. Paul Olden will fill in for the two exhibition games this weekend.

Behind the mic at Yankee Stadium since 1955—wow. What an amazing career he had. He definitely left his mark with the Yankees, and I’m sure he will never be forgotten. I listened to this guy my whole life, and so did many other generations of Yankees fans.

It will never be the same. Here is a tribute I made on Mr. Sheppard’s career not too long ago.

“I think Bob just wants to take it easy and no longer have the pressure of, ‘Can he? Will he? Or won’t he?’” Doherty said in an e-mail message. “And, at 98, who can blame him?”

“I’m happy to say that Bob is still doing well enough to drive a car,” Doherty said. “He picked his son up at the train this past weekend.”

“Now on to him seeing his 100th birthday in a year and a half,” Doherty said.

Yankees Universe: Weekly Update

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

By Kevin Rozell on March 31st, 2009 at 1:04 am

Steven Marcus reports that George Steinbrenner will be on hand for the new stadium opener. “I spoke with him and he said he is going to be there,” the person said. “I doubt he will be at the welcome home dinner. But he said he is coming to the opener.” This is great news. He may not be in the best health, but I’m just glad he is able to come to the park. After all…he built it!

The Yankees and the rest of baseball lost a great baseball writer this past week. Arthur Richman passed away in his sleep in his home in NYC at the age of 83. It’s guys like this who make this game so much fun to follow. George M. Steinbrenner released this statement: “Arthur Richman made baseball and the New York Yankees an enormous part of his life, and I am grateful for his contributions both personally and professionally”

Brian Cashman said Friday, referring to Alex Rodriguez, “He’ll be back after we’re gone." “All is going good.” Definitely good to hear. Whether the Yankees are 20-0 or 0-20…this team isn’t the same without A-Rod’s bat in the lineup. There is no arguing that.

The Yanks are now open to trading Melky before the season starts? With Gardner becoming the Yankees starting center fielder..Melky is out of a job. They are both going to be on the roster though. You never know what might happen with Gardner, so I don’t know how smart it would be to trade Cabrera away before the season started. Let’s wait and see what happens.

A new documentary about Yankee Stadium is being released. It is called “YANKEELAND: In the Shadow of the Stadium”. It actually looks really cool and I suggest you guys check it out.

The Yankees honored 9/11 victims with a memorial at George M. Steinbrenner Field this past Sunday. It was placed at the entrance of the stadium. It honors all those who lost their lives in the 2001 attacks, their families, and the members of the U.S. Armed forces. The memorial also contains a piece of steel from the WTC.

The organization decided to reassign eight players to minor league camps a few days ago. They were Todd Linden, Shelley Duncan, John Rodriguez, Doug Bernier, Justin Leone, P.J. Pilittere, Chris Stewart, Dave Robertson.

The Yankees also lost a member of some of those great Yankees teams back in the day. Johnny Blanchard passed away at the age of 76. He died of a heart attack in Minnesota. He spent 8 seasons with the Yankees (1955, 1959-1965)

Bernie Williams still wants to play in the major leagues again, but where exactly could he go? The Yankees will have both Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera on the roster and they don’t really have room for him. Are the Yankees really interested in him? Who knows. Nobody even knows if he is willing to play for any other team besides the Yanks, so this story might just fade away.

———————————————————————————————————

More variety of food at Yanks’ new park / Clearing up some roster questions

Here are a few clips of the from “The Pothole” episode of Seinfeld.

George gets a key chain from Steinbrenner in honor of Phil Rizzuto’s recent Hall of Fame induction. When he squeezes Phil’s head, it says “Holy Cow.” He loses it when trying to jump over a pothole in the city which is later paved over by construction workers. He needs his keys and he begins to look all over for them.

Enjoy…

Yankees-Blue Jays: Yanks Victorious in a 3-1 Win Over Jays

(The Voice of Yankees Universe)

Andy Pettitte got the start in today’s game, and he didn’t disappoint.

He went 6.2 innings, giving up five hits, one run, one earned run, and he fanned seven batters. I’ll take that any day of the year. I think many people didn’t care if Andy came back or not, but I don’t think people realize how valuable he can be.

Whenever you have a guy like Andy in your fourth spot, you know that the team is in good shape. Veras and Ramirez both pitched scoreless frames to end the game.

The Yankees offense knocked in three runs on seven hits.

Mark Teixeira hit an RBI single in the firstst inning. He also hit an RBI double later on in the game which gave him another RBI (2-for-3, two RBI). Angel Berroa also hit an RBI double in the eighth inning to bring the score to 3-1. Derek Jeter went 1-2, with a walk, one run, and a stolen base.
