Flyers Pound Florida: Should Richards Get a Suspension?

PHILADELPHIA—To use a baseball reference, I’ll throw out the most obvious. The Philadelphia Flyers hit a home run last night defeating the Florida Panthers 5-1 from the Wachovia Center, their second straight win.

The Flyers showed the hockey world what they can do when they perform at a high level for a full 60 minutes. Philadelphia outshot the Panthers 38-18.

Danny Briere continued his tear on the score sheet netting two goals and adding an assist. Arron Asham scored his third goal in as many games. Rookie James van Riemsdyk notched his first NHL goal on a pretty breakaway effort.

Simon Gagne finally got the monkey off his back ringing the red light for his first of the season. Before the goal, his seven-game goal-less drought was the longest of his 10-year career.

The alarming part of this game is the fact that nobody will remember the five goals and 38 shot performance the Flyers put on the cats. They will remember "the hit."

Florida's left wing David Booth was taken off the ice on stretcher after a hard hit from Philadelphia's captain Mike Richards. With 2:55 left in the second, Booth had just made a pass in front of the Flyers’ blue line, when Richards skated across and drilled into him. Richards’ shoulder went straight to the head on Booth, who had his head down.

Booth seemed to be unconscious before he hit the ice. The impact when he hit the ice might have done more damage than the actual hit itself.

Richards received a five-minute major for interference along with a 10-minute game misconduct.

Booth, who scored the only Florida goal, was taken immediately to Pennsylvania Hospital. It become known that Booth had a concussion, a cut above his eye, and more importantly motion in all of his extremities. He will be held overnight.

What was the reaction from Richards about his hit on Booth?

"I’m never out there to hurt anyone," Richards said. "I have respect for the game and respect for the players. My concern is with him. Hopefully, he’s fine and gets better."

"I just wanted to separate him from the puck. He dished it off and everything happened so quickly. I don’t have a history of head shots and I don’t even know if it was a head shot."

GM Paul Holmgren believed it was a legal hockey hit. He does not think the hit was suspension worthy.

"I don’t see how they (NHL) can view it like that," Holmgren said. "Mike was doing his job. His feet never left the ice. It was a shoulder hit. David Booth turned his head. It looks like he saw him at the last second, but turned his head and his head took the blow."

"It would have been shoulder on shoulder if not. It’s a physical game and sometimes these things happen. I feel bad for David Booth. He’s a good young player. Hopefully everything is going to be all right."

Obviously, the Flyers were pretty certain about the situation; however, the other side had some different thoughts.

"Richards knows (Booth) is in vulnerable position and goes after him," said Panthers defensemen Keith Ballard. "He’s done it before. That’s the same stuff they’ve been trying to cut out. The thing with Mike Richards is he’s a good, honest player. I love a lot about him game. He does a lot of things well, but then he does that stuff."

It shows how Ballard is mainly upset with the situation a fellow team-mate is in. Although, he should know Richards isn’t the kind of player that goes head hunting.

The Flyers and Richards should find out sometime this morning if their captain will miss any game action due to a suspension. The issue has to be handled quick because the Flyers play San Jose tonight at the Wachovia Center.

Notes:

Jeff Carter had 11 scoring chances and won the faceoff battle for the second straight game.

Briere’s two goals gave him his 28th multi-goal game of his career.

Goaltender Brian Boucher will see regular season action for the first time this season. Yes, against his former team.

Quotes: Flyers

Updated:

Mike Richards has been cleared of any wrong doing according to club GM Paul Holmgren. Richards is expected in the lineup when the Flyers face the San Jose Sharks.

Richards' Media Issue Overblown

Now it might be tough for some of you to understand why I'm writing this due, to the fact that I'm part of that media who Flyers captain Mike Richards is boycotting. So, please just read me out, then by all accounts formulate your own opinion.

Their was an article written in one of the local Philadelphia news outlets a little while back talking about how the "nightlife" of the Flyers young core could affect the team's overall performance. Obviously, Mike Richards was a part of that piece.

I won't mention who wrote the article. That's not my place to throw someone under the proverbial bus.

What some don't understand in this business is the fact that these players read what is written about them. The might tell you they don't, but they absolutely do.

I was present in the Flyers lockerroom after last nights 4-3 shootout win over the Boston Bruins. Did we talk to Richards? You can say that. Did he offer a lot of feedback? Not really. But that's natural Mike Richards. He's never been the guy that is going to offer you four paragraphs of quotes after a game or practice.

The one thing I did get out of the short interview with Richards is the manner in which he handled it. With an absolute, wide as can be, ear to ear smile. After the second question, when we knew nothing was going to come out of this, Richie flat-out laughed.

Furthermore, that told me he is having fun with this. I could be flat-out wrong. Is this approach by Richards the best possible scenario? I'm not sure. I know some of you who read this are going to find a way to say favoritism is being shown in the case of Richards; however, I will say sometimes it is the right thing for the athlete to fight back.

Especially, when that player plays in the city of Philadelphia.

Yes, he is the captain, I understand the responsibility of the role. There is a possibility that this problem was talked about within the room. I'm not 100 percent certain of that. You can bet, Richards knows exactly what he is doing.

This might be a stance that is being taken to protect his teammates. All depends on your own opinion.

Notwithstanding, I have absolutely nothing against any writer who wants to go ahead and rip the captain. It their job to write their opinion on what they see and hear. I'm technically not allowed to come on here and rant my opinion. But, I felt the need to register my thoughts on this.

This issue shouldn't go any further than it has, on the other hand, it also depends on the media and Richards. I personally believe its an overblown issue. The Flyers are 4-2-1 not 1-5-1. Richards isn't completely walking out of the building everyday. He is simply showing boundaries that he and his teammates have when you question their heart, competitive nature, and dedication to the franchise.

Note:

I'm not completely back on BR; however, I thought it might be OK to drop by and write some things that might interest the Flyers fans once again. I'm being modest, of course.

Flyers-Bruins: Claude Giroux Lifts Philly Past Boston on Dazzling Shootout Goal

On a night where Flyers fans consumed close to 21,000 hot dogs on "dollar dog night," Claude Giroux looked like a million bucks. Giroux, 21, netted the winning goal in the shootout with a dazzling maneuver Thursday night to beat the visiting Boston Bruins, 4-3.

The important aspect of last night's victory was the fact that the Flyers took only two penalties. Coach John Stevens has worked hard all season to preach to his players to stay out of the box. Last night, the Flyers took his words to heart.

“Its really big when you can stay out of the box. We only took two penalties, so that gives other guys to play and contribute more,” said Chris Pronger regarding the contributions from the third and fourth lines. Pronger also added his second goal of the season at 12:03 in the first.

The Flyers were also able to escape a late third period phantom hooking call on Simon Gagne to force overtime. Jeff Carter had a chance to end the game with under 30 seconds to play in regulation but was stoned by Boston backup Tuukka Rask. If Carter had scored, it would have been a winning short-handed goal.

The first period dragged for the first eight to 10 minutes on the Flyers end, which was expected coming off the long layoff, but the pace soon hastened by the second half of the first period.

“Tonight’s game was pretty sloppy and hopefully, we got a lot of the kinks out so we can move forward,” Pronger said. “We did what we said we wanted to do coming out of the third, and outplay them. We tried to take it to them, and get to the net and get scoring chances.”

Ole-Kristian Tollefsen had two assists and added a decisive fight. It was his first multi-point game in his NHL career.

“More time on the ice builds confidence,” Tollefsen said after the game. “It’s as simple as that. Two assists and a fight, that’s a good game. I can’t complain. It doesn’t happen that often for me and it felt pretty good.”

Ray Emery played good game between the pipes, stopping 24 shots, including two beautiful sprawling leg saves. Both of those stops were made sliding post to post.

“Personally, I think I battled out there tonight. It was a tough game out there, especially after being off for a while. But it was one of those games where you have to fight to get the win,” Emery said.

Notes

Giroux’s shootout goal was his first in the NHL. He was previously 0-for-2. Coach Stevens believes there is a tinkle in his eyes when the game starts to get down to the wire.

“I actually think he (Giroux) flourishes in that spotlight,” Stevens said. "We’ve been talking about it for a while...we’ve used him a few times before, but he’s made good moves and not scored. We decided to give him a shot tonight, and I’m glad I did.”

Arron Asham scored his second goal of the season, his first goal in his first game on the Mike Richards line. Darroll Powe added a rebound goal, also his second.

Captain Mike Richards said after the game that it was huge to get contributions from the third and fourth lines and that it's big toward the psyche of the team to get a win they deserved.

Bleacher Report Farewell, Thank You

I was planning on not doing one of these, but I figured the fans, and the thousands of people who have read my articles over the years deserves, a goodbye.

I've decided to leave Bleacher Report, for now, because of the wonderful situation that has been altered my life as a journalist and a fan. Of course, I'm not allowed to say what that job entails, but a few of you know what that is.

I decided to leave this site for some personal reasons, mainly due to the fact that I believe this site, overall, is not what it used to be. This information center has taken a turn for the worst over the past year, strictly in my opinion.

I believe that people who are trying to make a name for themselves are doing it in the wrong manor, and it shows in their articles. I understand that this is a glorified "blog" site and some like to have fun.

A lot of those times, the articles turn out poorly and the writer doesn't come out as well off as they did coming in.

But that's all well and good. The main reason is most likely the communication end of things. On Bleacher Report, we used to have instant contact with the guys who run this place; that's long gone now.

I wish everyone a bunch of luck moving forward. I don't care about who becomes the next CL of the Flyers section because I would like to think that I set a pretty good standard of what this section should be.

Being a fan, a reporter, opinionated, and respectful to the ones who dedicate their time reading your articles...That's what being a journalist is about.

I want to thank a couple people. Alan Bass, for finding me and giving me the chance to add my insight an knowledge to the Flyers end of things. BT, thank you for communicating with me in the very beginning and agreeing to make me the co-CL. The same goes for Ken Armer. Good luck to all three of you in your future endeavors.

Shout out to Ronnybrook, you're a funny guy! But a fan! Tom Dougherty, my twitter buddy, you would be my pick for the next CL, but I ultimately don't make the rules around here.

Lastly, and most importantly, the thousands of fans who read my articles and commented them. Good or bad, you guys and gals were simply the best. I would like to believe that my articles were factual, entertaining, and you guys respected and trusted my stories and articles.

I love you all for helping me get to where I want to be. I will still be writing, just not here.

When you think of Flyers noteworthy stories and/or breaking news, always think of http://difrancesco86.wordpress.com.

Thanks to all, enjoy the rest of your time on Bleacher Report. Good luck.

Simon Gagne Strains Groin, Should Be Ready for Flyers Camp

If good news was a premium for the Flyers, this is an update most Flyers fans and the team themselves do not want to hear.

Straight out of the gate in Team Canada’s Orientation camp, Flyers winger Simon Gagne appears to have an injured right-groin. The injury is said to be a mild strain per Flyers GM Paul Holmgren

“Simon Gagne sustained a mild strain of his right groin last night while practicing with Team Canada,” Holmgren said.

“He was examined by Team Canada’s medical trainer and team orthopedic physician who believed that it was not a serious injury. Simon will fly back to Philadelphia today and be examined by Flyers team orthopedic physician, Peter DeLuca tomorrow afternoon.”

Initial word had Gagne leaving the ice with an apparant right hip injury. Gagne had offseason surgery to repair scar tissue and a bone spur in that hip, so to say it was hip wasn’t far fetched at the time. The last thing the Flyers need at this point is another 35-goal scorer to beon the shelf.

It could be just me, but whenever I hear that a Flyers player has a groin strain, the red alarms begin to sound loudly in my head. Late this afternoon Simon Gagne gave an update on how he is feeling and how the injury might have came about.

“We had our first practice last night at the camp. I thought it was going to be an easy practice but the tempo was very fast right away during the very first drill. Guys were obviously trying to show their best. I had been skating back home for about two weeks but not at that high level,” Gagne said this afternoon.

“I kind of felt that it was getting a little bit tight on me, close to the hip and groin. I had the hip surgery this summer. It is a little bit tight everywhere and the groin is a part of that.”

Gagne emphatically stated that the reason for flying back to Philadelphia to get examined is so he can now prepare to be healthy come the beginning of training camp.

“Training camp is right around the corner. That is why I am heading back to see Jimmy McCrossin and our doctors. We will try to find out what is best for me and what plan we are going to take,” Gagne added.

“I want to be there and be ready at Day 1 so I will do everything I can and I am sure the doctors will do the same. I am not that concerned right now. We have a plan in mind. We will follow that and I am sure I will be all right for camp.”

The fact of the matter is that groin injuries have not treated the Flyers well in past years. Especially with their top players; Peter Forsberg, Daniel Briere, and now possibly Simon Gagne.

DX Tanks Legacy, War Not Over

It was one of the most intriguing pay-per-views in a long time for World Wrestling Entertainment.

Not since Wrestlemania 25 in April, has WWE produced an all-around fun ppv event.

Summerslam gave the WWE Universe exactly what they have craved for a long time now, they delivered an awesome ppv at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The night was headlined by the legendary Degeneration-X as they took on Legacy members Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.

Words are hard to come by when trying to explain the entrance that DX makes when heading to the ring. It has few rivals when it comes to creativity and excitement. Their DX Army tank with cannons blasting, soldiers gun sparkling, and new music to boot.

The entrance was rare in the fact that those type of arrivals are usually only seen at Wrestlemania.

The match was very good, lasting 20 minutes of back-and-forth action. Legacy proved to be two promising young stars.

The only other match that could compare to this was the World Heavyweight title bout between Jeff Hardy and C.M. Punk in a TLC match.

The DX return was everything the WWE and its universe wanted, maybe more. It was extravagant.

What's next for the duo of HBK-HHH? We will all know more tonight when Raw airs. The rivalry between DX and Legacy will continue, but for how long remains the question.

Is there anyone else planning an attack on the DX Army?

Maybe the unified tag-team champs Big Show and Chris Jericho are biting at the heels to attack the greatest force in Sports Entertainment in history.

With Randy Orton still the WWE Champion, I can still picture the 'Viper' sticking his nose in the business of the showstopper and the King of Kings.

Will all of Legacy become problems for ol' Degeneration X, nobody knows.

But if WWE wants to continue having profitable pay-per-views and fun, and entertaining television, DX will be on every Monday night for awhile longer.

Philadelphia Flyers Pre-Preview Part Three: Goaltending

If there was one question mark heading into the offseason for the Philadelphia Flyers, it had to be their goaltending.

How rare is it that a franchise, who is on the breaking point of winning their first Stanley Cup since 1975, would enter this season with two brand new goaltenders?

Both Martin Biron and Antero Niittymaki were not expected to be back this season, and that, of course, came to fruition. Biron, signed a one-year deal with the New York Islanders and Niittymaki with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

But, notwithstanding, nobody was prepared for the curveball the Flyers were about to hang to their passionate fan base.

Ray Emery.

Yes, that Ray Emery. The same goaltender who in 2006-07 with the Ottawa Senators went 33-16-6 with five shutouts and a 2.47 goals-against average, then had three shutouts and a 2.06 GAA in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The same Ray Emery who had a 71-40-14 record with a 2.71 goals-against average in his five seasons with the Senators.

From there, everything became a downward spiral in the life of sir Ray Emery.

Emery had offseason wrist surgery which delayed the start to his 2007-08 season, however, and a number of on-and off-ice disruptions gave the Senators no choice but to buy out the final two years of the three-year deal he signed after the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals.

The issues continued when Emery was exiled from the NHL to the Kontinental Hockey League. The struggling netminder was caught on video punching out his trainer while on the bench, things just couldn't get worse for the former prodigy.

They got better.

Emery, 26, signed with Atlant Mytischi last summer and went 22-8-0 with a 2.12 GAA. Not bad, considering that nobody even knew the NHL was still looking at him.

Except for Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren. He started talking to Emery's agent in February, and feels comfortable on his team's contending status on Emery returning to his previous form.

"He realizes what led to his banishment, being put in a situation where he didn't have any options other than go to Russia," Holmgren said. "Now he's back in the NHL, in a good organization, and he realizes what's at stake. I think he's going to be a highly motivated individual.

"I don't view it as a risk. I don't even think about it anymore."

Flyers coach John Stevens is excited for the opportunity to see what Emery can do with a second chance.

"We expect Ray to come right in and perform. He's still young, and he's really motivated to come in and win games for us and take us to the next level," Stevens said.

"Ray is determined to show everyone, including us that he's a new man and that he's the same goaltender he was when he went to the Finals in 06-07 with Ottawa."

The Flyers are risking their high hopes this season with the signing of Ray Emery. But, putting all past issues aside, Emery is a quality number one if his head is on straight. There's going to be a lot of excitement built around 'Razor' as he is called.

BOOOOSSHHH is BACK

Brian Boucher is returning to his roots here in Philadelphia. A crowd favorite who had outstanding playoff run back in 1999-2000 with the Flyers, will return this season presumably in the back-up role. Boucher signed a two-year deal in July.

Boucher will serve Emery very well as a mentor, which could be one of the reasons why he was brought back to the club. Boucher who was exiled himself from the Flyers back in 2002 after publicly stating negative comments towards then head coach Bill Barber, returns as an older, more established NHL goaltender.

Boucher has had trouble making a name for himself since being shipped out of Philadelphia in 2002, playing for five different teams. Since 2002, Boucher is 47-65-18 with the Coyotes, Blackhawks, Blue Jackets, Flames, and the last two with the San Jose Sharks.

The 32-year-old had a decent season last year for the Sharks while filling in for the injured Evgeni Nabokov going 12-6-3 with two shutouts.

I think he's another highly motivated individual that wants to be part of a good team and recognizes the role he's in. He's going to get the opportunity to play more games than he has the last couple years," said GM Paul Holmgren.

Although, there will be competition per coach John Stevens, the starting job belongs to Ray Emery and Boucher is happy with that, knowing his role. A championship is what matters for Boucher.

Was the acquisition of two new goaltenders a move that was made to be cap friendly?

I doubt it, the Flyers are a class organization who wouldn't mortgage their chance of winning the Cup, just to save some dollars and cents. The club is much smarter than that, and they know hands down that the fan base are more intelligent than the sports world thinks.

The Philadelphia Flyers have no gaping holes at this point in time. But, if bad luck persists, then goaltending might be the obvious boiling point. In my opinion, I think Ray emery is a perfect fit for this squad, but I don't play the games, or stop the shots.

Michaels Returns, As Will DX

The long-awaited return of the showstopper, the headliner, the main event, and the icon came to fruition last night on Monday Night Raw. The heartbreak kid Shawn Michaels will return with Triple-H to reform Degeneration-X to take on Legacy at the biggest party of the summer, SummerSlam on Aug. 23.

At first it wasn't looking too good for Triple-H last night when he found HBK working as a chef in a San Antonio luncheon. Michaels told the king of kings that "he didnt want to hear it, anymore," meaning that the likelihood of his comeback was vastly dropping.

There had been no sign of Shawn Michaels ever since his loss to Undertaker at Wrestlemaina in an epic match. Finally, however, in a corporate cafeteria? Yes, It appears HBK had decided to go underground, working as a cook, when his former DX partner pleaded with him to reform DX and compete against The Legacy at SummerSlam.

To The Game's relief, and the WWE Universe's delight, Michaels agreed.

As I had said a week ago that it was about time that HBK returned to TV, and he didn't disappoint as he seemed to look rejuvenated and charismatic as usual. The duo of the most dominating force of all time will return to try and end the rampage that has been controlled by Legacy member Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.

Will this be a one-night only DX reunion? I highly doubt it at this point in time. A hopeful lengthy return is needed and wanted by the WWE and its Universe.

Degeneration-X has some unfinished business to take care of. Remember when they were back going full-time? Their story ended when Triple-H tore his other quad and they had to abruptly end their program with Rated-RKO and everything was halted and rearranged.

With Michaels healthy and rested and The Game being in the best shape of his career, a long DX program should be in the works as we speak.

Expect DX on Raw next week from St. Louis. I'll be on vacation in Florida, but I can write from my handheld device, possibly.

Summerslam is shaping up to be a special one, an event that might be worth our $39.95. Well, for me, i'll just pay to watch HBK and HHH show everyone how its done the right way, the way the WWE fans want it to be.

What To Do With Degeneration X, The Future Could Be Bright

We all can pretty much figure out that Shawn Michaels and Triple-H will face-off with The Legacy come SummerSlam on August 23rd. Now what happens after? Or what should happen following their match?

Well, the ratings haven't treated the WWE well recently and a DX reunion tour is just what the doctor ordered for Vince McMahon, and it's obvious the fans will never get enough from the collaboration of both the Heartbreak Kid and the King of Kings.

It wont help the WWE out much if this is one-time return match-up just to boost the pay-per-view buy rate. The DX reunion then becomes nothing but a tease and an obvious last-minute upheaval of TV numbers for Vince and his industry.

What the creative team has to do (i.e. Shawn and Hunter), is come up with a program that coincides with Legacy, maybe bring in the Hart Foundation. Remember the days of DX, Nation of Domination, the Corporation? That could happen again if Vince McMahon lets it. This is what the WWE needs and what the WWE Universe wants.

DX is one of the last working and exciting left in the business today. Michaels and Triple-H are still better than over 90 percent of the entire roster, and they can still use their charisma and experience to make everyone laugh and want more. Of course, when you look at the new Hart Foundation, there's family history here, and there is bitter history connected to HBK. Need I say more.

With Legacy, everyone knows that eventually the WWE will try their keisters off to put these guys over. Now, that isn't going to happen if they keep fighting the likes of Cryme Time. DX has, and will continue to try and help push the future while keeping their own legacy intact.

Only time will tell with what DX's future is, but I would seriously hope that WWE can bring back the stable generation. This will generate great television and that means more entertaining matches, and programs. Keep your fingers crossed, this could be something good.

The question then becomes, why not? Why not throw three stables every Monday night on the flagship program that is, Raw? I can almost guarantee that nobody would decline the chance to see DX, Legacy, and the new Hart Foundation go at every week for a while, would you?

I would soak up every minute of it.

Shawn Michaels to Return...Finally

It's going to be a lot of fun to finally see the return of the "Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels really soon.

I've been watching wrestling since late 1989. I'm 22 years old and am a die-hard Shawn Michaels fan. He has helped my life in more ways than one through his wrestling, charisma, entertainment, and most of all, his faith.

After the greatest match in Wrestlemania history between HBK and The Undertaker, I figured time off was of the essence for Michaels.

To know that he will be with his family for a few months is all well and good. The Hickenbottom family deserves time alone just like any of us. The showstopper's body needed rest mentally and physically.

Also, the return of DX is one to look forward to, as usual. The tandem of HBK-HHH has always been a huge favorite of mine. The chemistry and the greatness is far and away more elite than other duos before or after them. They've set the standard for generations to come.

When I see on television that HBK is about to make a return, my love for pro wrestling pumps through my veins and makes its comeback.

Not to say that I don't love the product when Shawn isn't around—I do—but it's not the same without the HBK music, the in-ring pose, and the cheering tune of some sweet chin music.

The time has come. I'm a writer for numerous Philadelphia sports outlets, and I'm here to write monthly about HBK and his monthly reports. Wrestling is one of my true passions, and I'm here to bring all of it to you guys, the true fans of the WWE.

We are the WWE Universe! Now...

ARE YOU READDYYYYYY?

Flyers Pre-Preview Part 2-Defense

When I began thinking about this Flyers defensive core, I immediately thought about the meltdown against the Penguins in last years first-round playoff defeat. The back-line performance was probably one of the main reasons why Martin Biron is no longer the Flyers starting goaltender and is the second stringer for the New York Islanders.

The defense had serious holes, especially in character and talent. With guys like Andrew Alberts and Randy Jones, they became liabilities on the ice, forcing Kimmo Timonen and Braydon Coburn to log a lot ice time. Only to be worn down come playoff time.

When the playoff series began against Pittsburgh, Timonen and coburn’s legs were already burned out, which led to and early first-round exit and questions that needed immediate answers.

The Flyers didn’t take too long to respond.

At the NHL Draft in June, the Flyers sent Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, and two draft picks to the Anaheim Ducks in a blockbuster trade that brought in all-star and former Hart trophy winner, Chris Pronger. It was a shock to many that Pronger was going to wear the orange and black and not coveted free-agent Jay Bouwmeester.

Right then and there, the Flyers defense was already solidified as one of the league’s best. Pronger brings experience, power, and his own brand of scare tactic that the league and its referees are quite fond of.

Leadership will be the bigger bonus of this deal with the 34-year-old defensemen. Pronger will lead by both example and vocally. There are no excuses when it comes to his game. The same can be said with Kimmo Timonen. With Pronger now on the roster, everything takes a step up. The power play, penalty kill, offensive rush, and the overall psyche of the lockerroom.

The Flyers now have two pairings that can’t be matched by most in the NHL. Led by all-stars in Timonen and Pronger, the Flyers have two relatively young studs to pair up with the first two in Ryan Parent and Braydon Coburn.

Parent, 22, came into his own last season while playing uder the wing of Timonen, and proved that he can be a force on the blue-line. Parent, with a lot more responsibility this upcoming season, is poised to prove he isn’t a joke. With continued maturation and learning, he has all the tools become an extraordinary talent.

The guy most likely to be alongside Chris Pronger will be Braydon Coburn. Coburn, 24, has really been a warrior on the back-line since getting traded to Philadelphia from Atlanta back in 2007. Now entering his third season with the Flyers, ‘Coby” seems to getting better every year.

At 24, the six-foot-five defensemen from Calgary hasn’t reached his full potential. If he can stay healthy, and Pronger becomes a true mentor, then Coburn could really be considered as a top defensemen down the road.

Matt Carle, who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning early last season under-achieved for the most part of the season. Carle, who is still young (24) posted only 26 points in a year where he was expected to produce upwards of 35-40. This offseason Carle has dedicated himself to try and become a much more offensive productive defensemen and the future looks bright, for now, as a Philadelphia Flyer.

With the signing of defensemen 6’2”, 211-pound Ole-Kristian Tollefsen, one would think the Randy Jones days as a Flyer could be numbered. Jones, whos’ name was brought up plenty during trade deadline discussions and off-season talks, still has yet to be moved.

Tollefsen’s history of injuries could prevent the Jones departure for now, but, if hip problems or continuous decline in Jones’ play proceeds, someone new might don the number six sweater.

The future for the Flyers back-line looks to have gained an extra punch when the they signed 6’0”, 215-pound defenseman Marc-Andre Bourdon.

The 19-year-old split time between the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL in 2008-09, where he combined for 18 goals and 42 assists for 60 points and 112 penalty minutes in 54 games. This guy could very well accommodate the departure of Luca Sbisa, at least Bourdon can score points.

Overall, the Flyers defense is stellar at best. With the numerous contributions that Chris Pronger can bring to Philadelphia, the near future is a bright one for this relatively young, yet talented, Flyers club. Kimmo Timonen will continue to be the verbal leader of the locker-room and on the ice, one cannot bet against all-star play from the 34-year-old shutdown specialist from Finalnd.

This Flyers defense, on paper, should match-up well with every NHL team. Many think this Flyers team could very well have the best overall defense in the Eastern Conference, maybe the NHL. All of this looks very-well and good now, but this has to translate on the ice and in the standings for this Flyers team to any shot at Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Flyers' Pre-Preview Series Part 1: Offense

The NHL season is slowly approaching with training camp beginning Sept. 12 for the new & improved Philadelphia Flyers. Big news has followed the Flyers everywhere this offseason. From the signing of superstar defensemen Chris Pronger to the announcement that they will represent the NHL in their 2010 Winter Classic on New Years Day at Fenway Park in Boston.

They have also had bad news creep up, such as: did they give up too much to get Pronger? How are they going to replace Lupul and Knuble’s goal production? Did they mortgage too much of the future for Pronger? Will Ray Emery be the goalie that he was in 2007 for the Ottawa Senators?

All these questions and more will head into Voorhees, NJ this September when the Flyers take the ice for the first time since being ousted in the first-round by the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

This will be part one of my preview of the upcoming Flyers' season. This series will begin with the offensive outlook of this team as it stands.

Star-Light or Star-Bright: High expectations will be the story this season once again for the orange and black. Daniel Briere is prepared for a big comeback season. Claude Giroux will have a full-season to show how spectacular he really can be. The Flyers lost 52 goals with the departures of both Mike Knuble and Joffrey Lupul. They didn't gain any offensive power during the offseason, so far.

Is that really true?

I believe the opposite. I think the Flyers have possibly gained on the offensive side more than they have lost. Let’s look at it this way--Danny Briere is a career point-per-game player during his span in the NHL. If Briere is 100 percent healthy, which he states he is, there is no doubt that this guy can contribute over 80 points for Flyers this season.

“It was a very testing year (last year). Testing the patience, especially,” Briere said. “Obviously, it didn’t go the way I expected it to go, but it’s in the past now. You try to learn from that."

"I’m actually very, very excited about our team going into this season. That’s what has been pushing me to work out even harder now,” Briere said at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ.

“I’m starting to feel strong again. I’m trying to find that explosion that I used to have two years ago. Health-wise I feel great, and I’m ready for a big year,” he said.

If thats the case with Danny, then all arrows point to the positive for the star forward. I truly think this could be the equivalent to a big free-agent signing if Briere can stay healthy.

Next up on the add list for the team is the late-season superstar, Claude Giroux. The kid dazzled the team and the city with his Peter Forsberg-esque play and shy attitude. Giroux, 21, posted 27 points in 42 games last season, but everyone who watched and covered the team knew he was just scratching the surface on what he can do offensively.

Can we expect 75-85 points out of this kid? I'm not sure. What I am sure of, this young spark plug will bring you more than Joffrey Lupul right out of the gate. Giroux has the grit, toughness, energy, and the talent to compliment all of that, he is going to be an exciting attraction come this October.

The Flyers had an offense last year that produced 260 goals, which put them tied for fourth in the NHL. They were the only team with more than four 20-plus goal producers, with six. The Flyers lost two of them via trade and free agency in Lupul and Knuble.

Coach John Stevens gave his opinion on that situation, losing two consistent 20-plus goal producers.

“Well, time will tell, if you look at the year we were without Simon Gagne where he had 40 goals a year, we still had six guys over 20. Last year we missed Danny and we had seven guys over 20,” Stevens said.

“I think we have guys who, with more ice time and opportunity to produce, they're capable to keep on producing goals, especially with the appearance now of Chris Pronger, will help the defense produce more goals also,” he said.

The Flyers are also expecting another goal explosion out of Jeff Carter. Carter busted onto the scene last season, netting 46 goals. The Flyers believe he can match that number or even exceed it.

Captain Mike Richards—who achieved new career highs last year in points (80), goals (30) and assists (50)—is expected to raise all those number this season. Richards, who played hurt for most of last season, has the potential to propel his game to reach the century-point mark.

Guys like Scott Hartnell and Simon Gagne should see their numbers either raise or stay the same with how the Flyers offensive style of play. If Gagne gets paired with Briere, Gagne could be looking at another 35-goal season. The same goes for Briere.

Stevens believes guys like Jared Ross, James van Riemsdyk, and other hopefuls could produce if they play quality minutes on the ice with the big guys, especially JVR.

“Im really anxious to see what JVR can do, we know how skilled he is, and we all want to see what kind of competitive level he can get to, and how fast,” Stevens told me.

So the Flyers lost Mike Knuble and Joffrey Lupul. I’ll take a healthy Danny Briere and a full seasons worth of Claude Giroux over their departures any day of the week.

Expectations are high, but new questions will begin on Sept. 12 when they lace up their skates. The answers will be made with their performance come Oct. 2 in Carolina.

Part 2 of this Flyers preview series will feature defense.

Winter Classic: Flyers Vs. Bruins on New Year's Day

Today the NHL finally announced what Philadelphia hockey fans have been waiting for since late May. The Philadelphia Flyers will face off against the Boston Bruins at the historic 97-year-old Fenway Park.

“A unique event deserves a unique venue, and we are delighted the Bruins and Flyers will renew their rivalry, with the ‘Green Monster’ providing the backdrop,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “We welcome our fans, our teams, our sponsors, and the great city of Boston to this annual celebration of our sport.”

This game will be the first hockey game ever played inside the legendary baseball park. In addition, this will be the second-ever hockey game played on a baseball field.

Ticket details will be released within the coming weeks, but preparation has already begun. According to the NHL, the Flyers and Bruins are an ideal matchup for the Winter Classic.

In terms of competition and popularity, the Flyers and the Bruins have two of the best fan followings in the NHL.

“From everything we can tell, it will probably be the biggest classic,” Bruins Owner Jeremy Jacobs said in late May in reference to rumors Fenway Park was going to be the host venue. “I really want this in Boston. I think our fans want it. I think it will be the biggest classic that the National Hockey League has had. I think it will be the most successful and the most demanded.”

Flyers owner Ed Snider made this statement after the NHL officially announced the 2010 Winter Classic.

“The NHL Winter Classic is truly a great day for hockey,” Flyers founder Ed Snider said. “It has become arguably the biggest game played during the NHL’s regular season and offers a tremendous opportunity to showcase our great sport of hockey to millions of worldwide viewers. As one of the league’s original expansion teams, it’s an honor for the Philadelphia Flyers to serve as ambassadors for the NHL and the city of Philadelphia. And, we are thrilled that our opponent will be one of the original six NHL teams.”

Again, NHL commish Gary Bettman said that ticket information will be made available in the coming weeks along with arrangements for amenities.

“As of right now, we are still working with the league on our ticket allocation,” said Shawn Tilger, Senior Vice President of Business Operations for the Flyers. “As the visiting team, ticket inventory will be limited, but we will do our best to accommodate as many fans as possible. Our plan is to implement a system that gives priority to our season ticket holders.”

The Winter Classic has quickly become one of the most watched and anticipated sporting events in America and all over the globe. This year’s classic will combine two huge fan bases and two great hockey clubs. This is bound to be the best Winter Classic so far.

Chris Pronger Inks Seven-Year Contract Extension with Flyers

A day after the newly-acquired defenseman stated he would like to retire in orange and black, it looks as if he will.

The Philadelphia Flyers signed Chris Pronger to a seven-year, $35 million extension this afternoon.

“I am very excited to be able to retire a Philadelphia Flyer and I am looking forward to many years with the Flyers logo on my chest,” said Pronger. “I think both parties wanted to get it handled in a timely fashion in order to move on and get things set up for future years down the line so that the Flyers could make moves either this year or next year, and know that they had me in place.”

Pronger's cap number was going to be at $6.25 million this season. This will allow the Flyers some breathing room with $1.25 million in cap space next year.

This is a huge deal for the Flyers as they are well on their way to stabilizing a dominant force in the NHL. The deal is front-loaded so it can help the Flyers be cap-friendly.

The deal is similar to the Mike Richards deal of 12 years at $69 million signed in 2007. Plus, Mike Richards is also the client of Pronger's agent, Pat Morris.

"We are pleased to have one of the NHL's premier defensemen in our organization and under contract long term," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said in a statement. "When we made the trade for Chris, it was our intention to get him signed to an extension and we are glad we could come to this agreement today."

Chris Pronger Brings Leadership, Desire To Retire a Flyer

Today the Philadelphia Flyers introduced the new and possible final piece to the puzzle of the organizations 34-year Stanley Cup drought. That man is Chris Pronger.

Twice before in Pronger’s career he has been labeled as the ’savior’ or final piece to a team on the verge of a championship. He was supposed to be that guy when he signed in Edmonton, didn’t work out to plan.

In Anaheim, Pronger flourished and won a Stanley Cup. He now comes to a hungry Flyers team who is on the cusp of reaching the ultimate goal.

“I think I’m a key piece, not the main piece of the puzzle. This is a team game and we win together. I would like to think im an important piece, but it will take all of us as a team to get it done,” said Pronger.

“Im here to help the young guys along, achieve their potential. Be a force back in the blue line, and protect the net. The style of the play that the Flyers have been known to play certainly fits my game,” Pronger said today at the Flyers practice facility in Voorhees NJ.

“I made it sort of clear (and the end of the season) I would like to get a hammer, a guy who makes life miserable for the other team. This is one of those guys,” said the general manager. “I think we’ve made some strides in terms of revamping our defense over the last few years. You put Chris in our mix, and it makes our defense a good group.”

The Flyers were hoping when they signed him at the NHL draft that they acquired the Chris Pronger who plays with grit, passion, and leadership. Pronger fully believes he brings all those qualities and more.

Pronger was attracted to coming hear as soon as he had heard the possibility of him being dealt away from Anaheim.

“Obviously, there style of play is what my game is all about. The history of this team, and the talent of this team with the core being very young. Im very much excited to play here. The excitement of the team from the city I hear is amazing, towards all their sports team.”

“The biggest word I hear from players and other around the league is passion. I’m looking forward to getting cheered and probably booed a few times, but, I will accept that and continue to push harder to win here,” Pronger said.

The talk of a new contract was brought up and Pronger was very adament in his desire to retire a Philadelphia Flyer.

“I would love to finish my career here; I probably could. I don’t know if I want to play as long as Chris Chelios, but this probably the best I’ve felt in a real long time. . . . I think all the work I’ve put in over the last 10 years is starting to pay off.”

GM Paul Holmgren stated that there has been preliminary talks with Chris and his agent and hope to get something done in the near future.

“We’ll continue to hammer away and get something done soon here,” Holmgren said.

Owner Ed Snider believes that the Flyers are as close to a championship as they have been in a long time. “I think we’re close, Chris is a big piece to that, now we have to come together and win it as a team. There’s a lot of things that go into winning a championship, and we just acquired someone who will help take that major step forward,” Snider said.

Pronger is the kind of player who puts accountibility on himself, he is his own worst critic. He expects the city and their fans to let him know when he is playing bad so he can fix the problems and come out better the next time.

His leadership will show through the locker-room ten-fold. He is a no-excuses player who expects 100 percent out of his teammates.

“It’s just showing them what I learned and the experiences I’ve gone through,” he said at today’s news conference. “I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs, and if any of those situations can help them out, it’s an added bonus.”

Philadelphia will love the character and passion that Chris Pronger will bring to this team, and the city. I can only believe in the Flyers organization that they brought a true winner to the town that is so desperately in need of Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Flyers End Day With Boucher and LaPerriere

While the hockey world is still running rapid with signings and players still to be had, the Flyers finished their searches early—for today, anyway.

They signed free agent right wing Ian Laperriere and goaltender Brian Boucher to multi-year contracts, according to club general manager Paul Holmgren. Boucher’s deal is worth $1.8 million over the next two years, while Laperriere inked a three-year deal worth $3.5 million.

“I’m thrilled,” Boucher said. “I had a nice year in San Jose, but I’m happy to be back in Philly.”

“Obviously Brian’s experience with not only our team but with other teams, he is a good guy to have on our team,” said Holmgren of Boucher. “He is capable. He has played in a lot of NHL games and he also has playoff experience. Brian is a guy who really wanted to come back here.”

This gives the Flyers a legitimate backup to the newly signed starter Ray Emery. Boucher is very comfortable with his new position on his former team.

“I’m happy to be back in Philly,” said Boucher. “It’s going to be great. I’m grateful to the Flyers, to Paul Holmgren, and I love Philadelphia.

"Playing there and the excitement, there’s nothing like playoff hockey in Philadelphia and hopefully we have the team and pieces to come out of the Eastern Conference and challenge for the Stanley Cup.”

Boucher posted a 12-6-3 record with a 2.18 goals-against average, .917 save percentage, and two shutouts in 22 appearances with the San Jose Sharks in 2008-09.

Laperriere, 35, spent the last four seasons with the Colorado Avalanche. Over parts of 16 seasons in the NHL, the defensive-minded forward has recorded 118 goals and 198 assists for 316 points and 1,794 penalty minutes in 1,001 career regular season games.

He has played for four teams not including the Flyers; St. Louis Blues, New York Rangers, L.A. Kings, and the Avalanche.

“(Laperriere) is a role player that can take a little bit of the burden off some of our other guys in other roles like penalty killing and face-offs,” said Holmgren. “He is a warrior-type player and very durable. He will provide us with lots of energy and is one of those types of character players that everybody is after."

GM Paul Holmgren said today that Laperriere brings additional defensive-minded grit to the Flyers—which should fit in well with Chris Pronger. The Flyers are looking for a new attitude headed into next season.

It starts with these two.

“When Philly called, I got very excited,” said Laperriere after joining the club. “They show their fans and they show their team that they want to win, and they’ll do anything to win. We have a lot of guys on this team that haven’t won yet, and they want to prove to the hockey world that they’re winners.”

The Flyers had around $4.4 million before they signed Laperriere and Boucher. Those moves were the best they could with the money they had. Holmgren stated he wants to add another offensive-type player to the team.

In order for that to formulate, they must find away to get rid of more salary.

“We’d like to add one more offensive-type player if we could,” Holmgren said. “Like I said, we lost 52 goals.”

Knuble is now gone, they lost their front-of-the-net presence, and thus their power play pressure will have to shift toward the blue line, anchored by Pronger and Timonen. GM Paul Holmgren agrees.

“I think the addition of Chris Pronger changes your power play scheme because you have a guy who can hammer it from the backhand—a guy who we never had before, in my opinion,” Holmgren said.

“We will have a different look on our power play. We’re going to miss Mike, there’s no question,” Holmgren said.

I don’t think Ruslan Fedontenko is out of the question yet. However, they’re going to have to move fast and decide who to move in order to afford it.

Knuble Signs With The Capitals

According to TSN, Mike Knuble has signed a two-year deal with the Washington Capitals worth $2.8 million per season.

The 6-3, 230 pound forward has played for the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and the Flyers.

Last season with the Flyers, Knuble had 27 goals and 20 assists in 82 games.

This is a very tough loss for the Flyers. Obviously the deal they were offering wasn't good enough for the 36-year-old winger. He will now join and help the league's best player, Alexander Ovechkin.

Flyers Should Be Scary With Pronger

After these past couple days, the Flyers Chris Pronger trade finally sunk in with the fans. Now some, for some odd reason, still believe this was a bad and/or risky move. My question to you is, why?

Why?

Chris Pronger is a world-class defensemen who has won already. He has been an MVP. Yes, he is 34, but he’s as durable and reliable as he’s ever been in his career. The fans who are negative on this blockbuster deal are those who are too dedicated to guys like Joffrey Lupul and young Luca Sbisa.

The fact of the matter is Lupul had too be moved because he was making over $4 million this season and was valuable trade bait. Sbisa, was a first-round pick who had a lot of gaps in his game, but he's still only 18-years-old. He wasn’t going to come in next season and provide what Pronger is going to this upcoming season.

The two first-rounders and the conditional pick that Anaheim gets is totally blown out of proportion. A first-round pick in the NHL is as much of a crap-shoot as a first-rounder in the MLB draft. You just don’t know what you're getting.

Well, in the minds of the Flyers brass, they know exactly who and what they're getting in Pronger. He’s a monster at 6-6 who plays ferocious hockey. He’ll gain more penalty minutes with the Flyers, but they won’t be Scottie Upshall-type penalties that can cost his team the game.

“He brings so many things to our team—size, experience, attitude, leadership. He’s the complete package," coach John Stevens said. "We liked our back-end before, we really like it now.”

And that’s nothing against Scottie.

The move can backfire, as can any other trade or signing that goes on until next June. Another quality that Pronger will bring is the "no excuses" attitude. Pronger will not make excuses for bad play or a referee’s questionable calls that might have cost the team a win.

The defensive pairing will now be the tricky part for Stevens. Will he stick with the pairing of Timonen-Parent on the first line, and have the second look like Pronger-Coburn?

That would be the team's best option. There will most likely be points where Pronger and Timonen will pair up like power play situations. Pronger’s scoring prowess will contribute to an already dominant special teams.

If we’re now comparing the Flyers team with the addition of Pronger to the Stanley Cup champions Pittsburgh Penguins, then here’s how to look at it.

The Flyers now have shut-down defensemen for both the top lines on Pittsburgh. Timonen has always been known to stop the superstars, and he has done a superb job with Sidney Crosby in the past, so that stays put.

The problem child for the Flyers lately has been Evgeni Malkin. Guys like Sbisa, and Randy Jones were the ones who stuck with the big Russian. Pronger will now bring his hard-hitting presence to annoy and worry Malkin.

"To add a guy like Chris is great," said probable linemate Coburn. "I am excited to watch him play and learn from him and see him on an every day basis. The guy has been the MVP of the league and has done so many great things. He is a future hall-of-famer. To learn from a guy like that is going to be great.”

Once training camp starts, this becomes a low-risk high-reward move for the Flyers. This move has solidified the Flyers as automatic favorites for this years Stanley Cup. If Ray Emery can hold the fort down than this team is poised for a big run.

Flyers Acquire Chris Pronger

In what everyone thought was going to be a bid for Jay Bouwmeester turned out to be an outcome of Chris Pronger becoming a Philadelphia Flyer.

Anaheim will receive the rights to Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa and this year's and next's first-round draft picks. The Flyers also acquired 24-year-old center Ryan Dingle from the Ducks.

"I made it sort of clear myself, would I like to get a hammer, a guy who makes life miserable for the other team… this is one of those guys," Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said.

The news is still breaking as we speak, but Chris Pronger is now a Flyer. Pronger, 34, played all 82 games last season for the Anaheim Ducks and provided 11 goals and 37 assists for 48 points. He is due to make $6.25 million this season, his final year of his current contract.

"This goes back a few weeks ago. We told them(Anaheim) if Chris was going to be available, we'd have interest," GM Paul Holmgren said during a conference call.

"Chris said he was interested and we took it from there."

"He's a proven winner, the size, how he passes the puck, and he's an ideal fit for this team," Holmgren added.

Holmgren also added that they have some space to move around some more. He also stated that the move was made because they want to win now.

The Flyers beat out the Ottawa Senators to get the veteran blue liner.

Obviously a massive deal by the Flyers, how they’re going to fit Pronger in under the cap is for later discussion. But, this is a much needed piece to the main puzzle.

Pronger spoke via an audio conference call.

"I'm very excited. It’s obviously a city that’s very passionate for the sport of hockey. The style of the play that the Flyers have been known to play certainly fits my game. They’ve got some great young talent and I hope to help not only develop the team into being regarded as one of the top teams in the league, but winning a Stanley Cup," Pronger stated.

Pronger said he also thinks he could be the missing piece to the puzzle for the Flyers.

"I’d like to think so, but I don’t really know a whole lot about the team right now. I’ve seen them play a few times in the playoffs, and I like what they have up front. I think they’ve got a good core group of defensemen on the back end."

Pronger finished his call with a little scouting report of his own on Ryan Dingle, the other player the Flyers acquired in the trade.

"He’s a little spark plug. He’s a skilled guy, very fast, competitive guy. He plays off the puck give and go, and he’s one of those guys who wants to score.

The club was aggressive in the move, but, was the price of giving up Lupul, Sbisa, and two first rounders worth it for a 34-year-old? Time will tell.

Phillies-Rays: Chase Utley, John Mayberry Pound Tampa Bay 10-1

It's one of the more puzzling stories of the 2009 Philadelphis Phillies—the fact that they dominate on the road, yet can't buy a win at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies pushed their road record to 24-9 after an absolute drubbing of the defending American League champion Tampa Bay Rays, beating them 10-1.

The Phillies offense blasted off early and often in the top of the first. Rays' starter David Price surrendered six runs, highlighted by a three-run homer from John Mayberry Jr. Chase Utley had a two-run double, and Ryan Howard smacked an RBI double.

Charlie Manuel spoke on the importance of having Howard back in the lineup.

"It gives us a four-hole hitter who hits 48 to 60 home runs a year," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "That's what it gives us. I don't know where we'd go to replace him."

Utley continued his hit brigade, and in the fourth inning, his Price was right when he smacked a two-run homer to right-center to make it an even 10-0.

Jamie Moyer shut down the off-balance Rays the entire game en route to his 251st victory.

Moyer allowed just one run while allowing three walks and striking out four in six innings to sure up the win.

"You're looking at Jamie, who's been around, throwing 80 mph, carving us up," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "And then you've got the young left-hander who's throwing 93to 94 [mph] and having a hard time. Baseball's a beautiful game."

"You know what you've got going into the game (against Moyer)," Rays third basemen Evan Longoria said. "He throws it just a little bit below hitting speed, and that's just something you have to plan for."

"I think he was pretty much vintage Jamie Moyer tonight. He made the pitches when he needed to. And he just kept us off-balance."

Last night was the club's first win since June 14, and today is a whole new day. The Phils have to do the same thing and hope their pitching does the job.

Joe Blanton will square off against Matt Garza tonight at the Trop.

Quotes: Phillies

Flyers Fenway Bound: Philadelphia Will Play in Winter Classic

As of last week, the NHL was set on having their 2010 Winter Classic matchup to be the Washington Capitals against the Boston Bruins at Fenway Park in Boston.

My, how the tables have turned...

The Philadelphia Flyers will invade Fenway Park this January against the Boston Bruins. Anthony SanFilippo of the Delco Times confirmed that the NHL has indeed made it official that the Flyers have been chosen to play the Bruins.

The NHL has been heavily pushing the Capitals so they can put more of a focus on Alexander Ovechkin, but NBC wanted none of it—they wanted the orange and the black, largely because of the television numbers that the Flyers put up every season, including last. NBC believed the classic would be better marketed by the Flyers.

The NHL has confirmed that the Flyers would play in the outdoor extravaganza. The Flyers have agreed to play. No official announcement has been made.

Flyers president Peter Lukko has not yet been informed of the league's decision, so an announcement would obviously have to be made sooner rather than later.

This is unexpected because the Flyers probably thought they were already out of the running as of a few weeks ago. The Winter Classic is the most popular and most successful event for both the NHL and NBC network.

The NHL has been rumored to be set on having the 2011 Winter Classic held in either Calgary or Toronto. No official word has been set on that regard.

We can expect a great Philadelphia crowd packing Fenway Park.

Ken Griffey Jr.'s Pinch-Hit Heroics Electrify Seattle Mariners Beat D'backs

Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu told the media that he thought Ken Griffey Jr. was starting to get his groove back. Last night was the perfect indication that he was right.

Ken Griffey Jr. slammed a pinch-hit home run in the eighth to tie the game at three. It was a classic shot by Junior that sent the Safeco crowd into a frenzy. He hit it seven-rows deep over the right-centerfield wall on the first pitch off D'Backs reliever Tony Pena

The blast propelled his teammates as Chris Woodward came up next and ripped a single, and scored on catcher Rob Johnson's triple. The M's took the lead and beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3.

Russell Branyan also clubbed his 16th dinger of the season to open up the eight inning.

After the game all the Mariners players could talk about was Junior's memorable blast.

"That was unbelievable," catcher Rob Johnson said. "The fans were going crazy when Branyan hit the home run, but when Junior stepped into the box it was as loud as I have heard it here, and the place wasn't even packed. I can't think of a better situation for something like that to happen.

"There wouldn't be this stadium if not for him. The people in this city love him and the players on this team love him. For something like that to happen is special."

After Griffey hit his seventh homer of the season, he got to the dugout and took his first curtain call of the season.

"I was just looking for a pitch I could hit," Griffey said of his 618th career home run and sixth in a pinch-hit role. "I was not trying to do too much, get a pitch I could hit and hopefully hit it. I wasn't trying to hit a home run."

"The only thing I was thinking about (going around the bases) is don't fall and embarrass yourself," Griffey said.

Griffey dropped his bat, and went into his historic home-run trot down the first base line.

"He jumped on that ball and it looked like he was 18," manager Don Wakamatsu said. "It was beautiful."

It was Juniors first pinch-hit home run since September of 2006.

A scary moment for the Mariners occurred in the fifth inning. Left fielder Endy Chavez injured his right knee in a collision with shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt.

Chavez had to be taken off the field on a cart. He will have an MRI exam on the knee on Saturday.

M's starter Jarrod Washburn pitched pretty well going seven innings, and giving up just three hits in a no-decision. Problem is, Washburn has not won a game since April 21. That's 12 starts.

It was a special night for the 27,319 that paid to see a win. What they got was a win and some extra magic.

Their prodigal son Ken Griffey Jr. electrifying them in the house that he built.

Orioles Down Phillies 7-2, Time to Vent

This isn't going to be a game recap because I wasn't there tonight. This is going to be a venting period.

Im tired of watching this team go through the motions every other game. I get the feeling that this team, the defending world champions of baseball, are showing up at the ballpark in Philadelphia expecting the other team to just lay down. I've seen it before.

I play the game, and have for over 15 years, I can tell when a team just expects to win and is not work hard at doing it.

What happened to our fans? The most passionate, hard working, victory-craving lunatics who show up and sell-out a ballpark every night to watch their Phillies play competitive baseball and want to win? Where are you right now?

I'll tell you where your at; you're in a corner somewhere drinking red kool-aid, because you don't want to face the fact that this team, our beloved Phillies team, is in trouble.

75...

75 strikeouts on this current homestand. DISGUSTING. Utterly disgraceful.

This team cannot hit in important situation as a whole, and the pitching is beyond brutal. The rotation might be the worst in baseball right now. The bullpen, although tired, stinks.

I expected much more out of this rotation and pen, as a whole, and have gotten squat-ta.

This lineup is striking-out at an alarming rate, a rate that might break records. They have to remember the basics. See the ball, look for contact. You're gonna hit home runs boys, but first you have make sure the bat touches the ball.

Where is our GM? Our GM who everyday, and has said this in front of my face into my recorder and said that he is always on the phone, always talking to teams, and always looking for the best deal.

Obviously you're not looking hard enough. Roy Oswalt, Washburn, Jason Marquis, and even Brad Penny are just waiting to hear their name called into the office, to tell them they have just been traded.

Do something about it. YOU owe us, the fans of the Philadelphia Phillies, answers.

Datsyuk Edges Richards for Selke, Ovechkin Repeats MVP

It was a historic second place finish for Philadelphia Flyers captain Mike Richards. That finish involves tonight’s Frank J. Selke award. The award is given to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association at the end of the regular season.

The voting was the closest vote race since the trophy’s inception back in 1978. Detroit Red Wings star Pavel Datsuk won the trophy with 945-942 votes over Richards. It shows that the NHL, and the fans of the league, are giving the Flyer captain the respect he deserves.

Other notes on the NHL Awards:

Alexander "The Great" Ovechkin won his second consecutive Hart trophy as the league’ s Most Valuable Player. Ovie also won the Lester B. Pearson award for the "most outstanding player."

Columbus rookie goaltender Steve Mason took home the Calder Trophy as the top rookie. No shock there.

Bruins Zdeno Chara won the Norris trophy as the best defenseman.

Finally, Bruins net-minder Tim Thomas took home the Vezina trophy. He was voted as the league's top goalie. Thomas posted a record of 36-11-7 with a 2.10 GAA.

Philadelphia Places Raul Ibanez on DL

The Phillies announced this morning that their star outfielder Raul Ibanez was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin.

Ibanez was a leader in All-Star votes and the game is scheduled for July 14.

Phillies have called up John Mayberry Jr. from Triple-A to take his place.

Ibanez is hitting .312 with 22 homers and 59 RBIs. He is second in the National League in both home runs and RBIs.

Manager Charlie Manuel noticed the issue last night.

"It looked like tonight when he hit that ball to shortstop he couldn't turn it on," Manuel said. "He kind of gimped. I saw that. It looked like it might have been bothering him."

This probably explains Ibanez's recent slump in which he hit .194 (6-for-31) in his past seven games.

Philadelphia Flyers GM Holmgren Talks Draft, Roster Moves

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren met with the media this afternoon to touch on a number of topics.

One of the main topics, of course, was what the team has planned heading into free agency. The draft was also a hot topic, along with the continuing contract talk with free-agent goalies Marty Biron and Antero Niittymaki.

On Free Agency:

“It’s something we’ve talked about with some teams," Holmgren said of trading the pick to move up.

"It gets down to price, and if there’s something that there’s a fit there. But, we have talked about that with other teams. We’ve also talked about moving back and getting into a different group of players where maybe we might have access to more than one."

Although players weren't mentioned, it seemed clear to me that the Flyers are going to be very active in the NHL's shopping season come draft time.

Marty Biron, Roster Moves:

“Well, I know he’s changing agents, so I don’t even know who to talk to right now, but we’ve tried a bunch of different things and I don’t know what the number is and what the term is. We’re still going to talk, but obviously the window is closing,” Holmgren said.

Doesn't sound too promising. So long Marty, you were a good guy, and good luck with your future endeavors.

Homer had a simpler answer regarding Niittymaki's situation and if he's still in the picture: "Yes."

The good news that really came out of this press conference was when Holmgren said the Flyers are upwards of $4 million under the cap.

The club is looking to try and sign right-winger Mike Knuble before July 1. The same goes for defenseman Andrew Alberts. Hopefully, the second name decides to move on.

On the Draft:

“Our stance is probably 'pick the best available player.' Our first pick is the 21st. There’s actually guys at each position there that we have in that group," Holmgren said.

“I think it’s a lot like last year. I think it’s a good draft. We believe certainly with our first pick, we’ll get a good prospect. I don’t think it will be a guy that, well, I shouldn’t say that. Last year we never thought we’d get a guy [Sbisa] who would be able to step on to our team in training camp."

Holmgren closed out the conference by stating that he doesn't think this team is too far away from being in the same place the Pittsburgh Penguins were just at: accepting Lord Stanley's Cup.

UNC, Ackley Advance in College World Series

The North Carlina Tar Heels pounded out 23 hits en route to an 11-4 clinching win over Southern Miss.

Five of those 23 came from Seattle Mariner's second overall draft pick, Dustin Ackley. The first basemen went 5-for-6 becoming the CWS career hits leader. Ackley has 27 hits in 14 CWS games.

He flied out in his sixth at-bat in a chance to be the second player ever to have six hits in a CWS game.

The number two overall pick in the first-year player draft has collected a hit in 21 consecutive NCAA tourney games since 2007. He broke Stanford's Sam Fuld's record of 24 in the third inning.

The Tar Heels tied a CWS record with 23 hits, all but three of those hits were base knocks. UNC registered a run in every inning except the fifth, sixth, and eighth.

UNC are 6-1 in elimination games.

North Carolina will move to play the winner of the Texas-Arizona State game tonight.

Is Jay Bouwmeester Really the Answer for the Flyers?

This offseason has been very confusing for the Philadelphia Flyers. They signed a troubled goaltender in Ray Emery, who was exiled from the NHL last year, to a one-year contract.

Obviously, Marty Biron is all but gone at this point.

As of last week, the Flyers have come in contact with their former netminder Robert Esche, who has been in Russia for the past two seasons. Antero Niittymaki is still available, but is unlikely to sign to be a backup.

The Flyers will need a backup to Emery; in comes Esche.

Esche won't be let go from his contract unless his team can acquire a suitable replacement.

So, who is the free agent that the Flyers are making room for? That might be Florida Panthers star defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. The whole hockey world has been all over the "JayBo" train, and the Philadelphia Flyers are no exception.

But, all in all, is he really worth the $6 to $8 million a year he's going to demand? I'm not sure at this point.

In the 82 games he played last season, Bouwmeester only posted 27 assists and had a minus-2. Admittedly, the Panthers were not that good of a team, but he averaged over 27 minutes of ice time a game last season.

The Flyers would welcome the 15 goals he put up last season as defense played a large part in the Flyers' first-round exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Now, I'm not sitting here and saying this would be a bad signing. I think the Flyers should definitely go out and be aggressive with Bouwmeester, but don't spend the entire bank on the guy if it means setting the club back a few years with salary cap issues.

Is Bouwmeester the missing piece? Maybe.

Can he instantly come in and help? Yes.

Is he going to be worth a Danny Briere contract, or bigger? That's up for you to decide.

In my own opinion, I'm extremely worried about the possibility of the signing of "JayBo." I like the durability factor, playing full seasons five out of his first six years in the league. Also, I like the fact that he's just now turning 26.

My main concern lies on the salary cap.

We've seen how much trouble Paul Holmgren had changing the lineup around toward the end of the season, signing guys off the streets to one-day contracts and sending certain guys down so they don't affect the cap when players like Briere return.

The Flyers should be cautiously aggressive during this upcoming free-agent shopping spree, weighing all their options before breaking the bank for one guy, and they should see if they can plug holes with multiple guys who will sign for less.

Overall, I believe the Flyers should take a shot at Jay, if the price is right. The main concern with him is if he truly wants to win. If Bouwmeester really wants to play for a winner and can convince the Flyers that he's worth every cent they're going to offer him, then by all means sign him.

Randy Jones and Andrew Alberts should both be on different teams come September. The top five for the Flyers should look like this: Timonen, Coburn, Parent, Bouwmeester, and Sbisa. Looks pretty good on paper.

Phils' Bats Erupt, Avoid Sweep With Win

The Phillies mostly had one goal going into todays afternoon finale, do not get swept. Well, Philadelphia did its job. The Phillies beat Josh Beckett and the Red Sox 11-6 at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies broke away from the Sox with a massive six-run seventh that snapped a 5-5 tie. Slumping shortstop Jimmy Rollins hit a tie-breaking home run in the seventh, the blast snapped his 0-for-16 hit-less streak.

"The last few days, I've been going pretty close to the way I felt at the start of 2007, where my hands are going to the ball, the way I'm seeing the ball," Rollins said. "All I can do is continue to put good swings on the ball. And if they find some leather, that's bad; if they find some grass, that's good."

Philadelphia rolled from that point.

Third basemen Pedro Feliz led the charge and is now batting an amazing .318 after his 3-for-5 day at the plate. Feliz roped a two-run double, followed by two walks, Rollins gets drilled in the ribs. Shane Victorino came up and got walked to force in another run. The Phils were ahead and were able to find their comfort zone.

Slugger Ryan Howard had a nice ballgame, his two-run double capped a four-run fifth, and he was happy that the long week came to an end with a big win.

"It's been kind of a rough week, it's been kind of long," Howard said. "Especially coming into today and this series, to be able to do what we did today makes it that much more exciting."

The bullpen put in another long outing today in relief of starter JA Happ. The Phils' bullpen has been over-used to say the least over the past few days, logging over 24 innings of work.

The worst parts of Happ's performance came from back-to-back homers from Rocco Baldelli and Nick Green to open up the second. Then in the sixth, Red Sox starter Josh Beckett hit his second career home run at Citizens Bank Park. Beckett is 4-for-10 with two long balls in Philadelphia.

In what was most likely more exciting news than the Phillies win, was the 15-0 drubbing the Yankees put on the Mets this afternoon in New York. The Phils now lead the NL East by four games.

Raul Ibanez Alert:

Ibanez did not play today due to soreness in his left foot; he not expected to miss anymore time according to both Charlie Manuel and Ibanez himself. Ibanez's cleat was cut down in size in order to relieve any further damage. He should be in the lineup Tuesday when the Phils start their three-game home series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Cole Hamels will mount the rubber on Tuesday.

Philadelphia Flyers Looking at Robert Esche

The Flyers are trying to bring the band back together, for a pretty decent price.

A club source told CSNPhilly.com that the Flyers have contacted Robert Esche's agent about a possible return this fall to maybe be the backup for newly acquired starter Ray Emery.

Although the discussions are only the beginning stages, there are contract issues that Flyers and Esche run into.

Esche still has one-year left on his deal with Kontinental Hockey League’s SKA St. Petersburg. Head coach Barry Smith has told CSNPhilly that he would not release Esche from his contract unless he and his team could find a suitable replacement for him.

Esche had a 21-14 record with an impressive 1.87 GAA, and a .912 save percentage for SKA St. Petersburg.

I truly hope for the fans of the orange and black that these talks are preliminary, or else this will be a bad PR hit for the Flyers. Esche played four years here but proved t not to be a good enough starting goaltender.

Id stick with Niittymaki at this point in time. But, this obviously looks to be a salary cap move. If it happens.
