Yoann Gourcuff: He Is What United and Liverpool Are Looking For!

Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are just few of the very big clubs in desperate search for a new forward.

Karim Benzema, David Villa and Samuel Eto'o are the biggest names to be linked with these clubs on a daily basis.

However, one talent has not been mentioned in relation to one of the major clubs this summer. The reigning Ligue 1, Player of The Year, Yoann Gurcuff.

After starting his career with Rennes, he joined AC Milan in 2006, where he made his debut against Greek side AEK Athens, scoring a goal in the process. He was also made Man of the Match.

Due to doubt held in his abilities, he was sent on loan with Bordeaux for the 2008/2009 season, and they won the the Ligue 1. He also scored goal of the season against PSG in a 4-0 victory.

In late may 2009, it was revealed that Gourcuff had agreed to a four-year contract with Bordeaux.

This player is of immense talent. He is, by far, the closest I have ever seen to Zinedine Zidane and I would suggest any manager to pursue his services.

Though his recent contract signing would provide difficulties, I hope either Liverpool or Manchester United will try and bring him to England, especially as his fee could be as low as £15mil.

Here is a link of his goal against PSG:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZoHBlsMe5I

Steven Gerrard: This Player Is the Best in the World!

Since the birth of "the beautiful game," disputes of tactics, teams, and managers have repeatedly characterized the intensity and excitement of the sport.

An even more ferocious and complex debate has been the one about the best, most talented, and gifted player this world has to offer.

Through time, the finest players are spoken about in the media only with a calm demeanour, as if these still remain enigmas to the people and the participants of the footballing world.

Nowadays, only few will be mentioned in the debate amongst the elite, and even fewer will be mentioned when conversing about the best ever seen.

From the farthest outskirts of the world, Pelé will forever be mentioned in this debate. Three World Cup-winning medals and over 1,200 goals have not since been topped by anyone.

On what seems to be second place, Diego Armando Maradona comes in. He will be remembered in all eternity for his destroying performance against England in the World Cup of '86, where he literally ripped the England defence to pieces single-"handedly."

His second goal of that game still stands as the most memorable goal ever scored in the World Cup finals, and it still remains doubtful if that is ever to be changed.

From a personal and new era perspective, the French magician Zinedine Zidane comes in at third place.

His mesmerizing skill and determination made him the most complete player of the last 20 years. With two goals in the World Cup of '98, he stands still amongst the best players ever to grace this earth.

Honorable mentions go to Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, George Best, Johann Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Michael Laudrup, Michel Platini, Kenny Dalglish, and Sir Bobby Charlton.

When the talk of the present best player in the world begins, usually only two or three are spoken of in the same breath.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Ricardo Kaká: These three players are undoubtedly the most gifted and talented players currently to play football. None of these players have seen the heights of Ronaldinho, yet seen as his form is not worth mentioning, I won't.

Also, from a personal perspective, a player of immense talent, though yet to be fully utilized, is Wayne Rooney.

Of the three players, it is fairly easy to establish that, whilst his talent may be weaker than that of Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is the most complete footballer of the three.

He has a big and strong physique, takes fabulous free kicks, possesses one of the best headers in Europe, and scores 30-plus goals a season. He also plays on both wings equally well and is a deadly striker when put up front.

This proves that a player of less natural talent can become a better, or at least a more complete, footballer than one of bigger talent.

Therefore, I will put talent aside and focus on efficiency, determination, and importance. The one player that is all of these things, even more so than Cristiano Ronaldo, is Liverpool's own Steven Gerrard.

Victim of multiple injuries in his first years at Anfield, Steven has certainly bounced back, becoming captain of the club he and his family has adored for years.

He stands among the most respectable footballing characters of the present day and sees honour in playing for the same club for the whole of his career.

Not only this, he is the most complete and therefore best player in the world.

With the most fantastic right foot ever to be seen in English football (sorry David Beckham, you should have scored more), his team thrives on his emotion and understanding of their club and its history.

He is on top of his game; a personal record of 24 goals in all competitions speaks for itself.

He would, of course, see and feel greater recognition if he won a World or European cup, yet his profile quickly rose when winning the Champions League in 2005.

He was also illegally robbed for the Ballon d'Or in 2005, seen as the prize is based on what a player has achieved. Yet once again, European journalists continue their bias towards England.

So what do you think?

Is Steven Gerrard the world's best or merely just good? Have your say.

Cristiano Ronaldo Is Definitely Replaceable!

As the month of June progresses, the unavoidable sale of wing wizard Cristiano Ronaldo comes closer and closer.

Losing the most recent winner of the prestigious Ballon d'Or and FIFA Player of the Year awards will never be easy for a club to handle. However, if one club is able to handle such a thing, Manchester United would be the one.

Different disputes have been made over the loss of one of the greatest players ever to step onto the grass of Old Trafford. Some think that Cristiano was, by far, the most important player on the team. Experts believe that his loss will improve the team over the next years.

The first argument can be backed up by numbers. Taking a look at his "magical" season, and the one just ended, astounding figures present themselves.

Ronaldo scored 42 goals last season, yet only had seven assists in the league in 34 appearances! That's extremely low for a first-choice winger on a team that scored 80 goals and won 27 games.

In the '07-'08 season, Cristiano found his deliverings worse than those of Nickey Shorey, Martin Petrov, and Simon Davies, who all outshone him in assists. This isn't acceptable for a player who is supposed to be the "best winger in the world."

After all, a player who is positioned at the right wing has a responsibility of serving the forwards with passes.

The season of '08-'09 proved no better for Cristiano in terms of assisting his forwards. He had a total of six assists in 33 appearances—certainly not impressive for a winger.

He was, once again, outshone in the assist department by teammates Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, and Ryan Giggs (despite Berbatov and Giggs playing in fewer games than he did).

However, once again he managed to gather together a decent goal haul of 18 league goals.

From these numbers, we can easily determine that his wing play is nowhere near as good as other wingers in the league, yet his goal tally certainly is impressive.

Forty-nine league goals in two consecutive seasons is almost as good as it gets and has only been eclipsed by Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry. However, this is a winger, not a striker.

Some say (such as the probably highly intelligent Cesc Fabregas) that United is a one-man team.

He said, "Ronaldo won the last two leagues on his own." Sure Cesc, whatever you say.

The point of this is that when Cristiano moves into forward positions, he pushes gifted players such as Rooney, Carlos Tevez, and Berbatov out of their respective positions, which eventually lessens the effect of the team.

He took 103 shots in the season '08-'09 (some say 111, others say 96), and United had a total of 230 shots in the league. That means that our winger had roughly half of the shots taken. This is bound to cause a diminishing return of our main goal scorers.

Therefore, as the experts would explain, Cristiano Ronaldo is very much replaceable. We might lose a prolific goal scorer, but with a proper winger, the forwards of the club will once again excel.

Rooney will especially benefit from Ronaldo's exit. The last two or three seasons have seen the talent that we brought him in for wasted. He has been put out wide, put in midfield, and, most importantly, has played second fiddle to Cristiano's ego.

Given a decent winger (in the classic sense of the term) like Antonio Valencia or, even better, Franck Ribery, Manchester United's team will flourish much more, and forwards Berbatov and Rooney will prove to be even more useful than we have ever seen them before.

Even Nani, I believe, could turn on the heat for a right wing spot and once and for all prove his talent.

The question is just who the boss will bring in to replace one of his best-ever players.

Save Wayne Rooney: Sir Alex, Please Judge Again

This article will be connected with a growing concern that I and many other Manchester United fans have had over the last months.

That being, of course, the misuse of the biggest talent of the country: Wayne Rooney.

Continuously, seemingly to compensate for Cristiano Ronaldo's missing tactical ability, Wayne has been used on the wing. This has frequently been seen in the Champions League especially, but now Sir Alex seems to have accepted the idea, and that's resulted in several Premier League outings on the flank.

Wayne Rooney is one of the few players today who does not mind being played at a different position; he simply just wants to play.

However, this should not alter Ferguson's judgement when it comes to where his most destructive player should be.

I read two very interesting articles today, one written by Terry Venables and another commenting upon Rooney's role in Tuesday's match against Arsenal.

Venables chose to label his article in the Sun "Rooney is Messi Mk II"; he's actually comparing the act of Lionel Messi to Wayne's performance on the wing. The following was included:

"When Rooney plays on the left, he becomes much more difficult to mark...[he] finally seems to have got his head round the fact that he can have an impact and influence games from the left. And that has to be right for him—and United."

Now, that first comment is, in my opinion, absolutely ridiculous. If you think back to Rooney's October form, when he was deployed behind a solid Dimitar Berbatov, he thrived immensely. The defenses of the league had nothing against him, and he consequently answered with the best goal-scoring stretch of his life.

I do agree with one thing Venables said in the article, though: Wayne can have an impact from the left or right. He could do well as a centre-half, which Sir Alex alarmingly pointed out today after the Boro match:

"He says he’s a good centre-half, and we’ll find out one day! He’s got the ingredients."

Even though Ferguson might be joking here, let's hope we won't ever find out whether or not Rooney is a "good centre-half."

The point of this is that Wayne is the biggest talent this country has seen for a long, long time. When he came bursting onto the scene at age 16, few could help thinking that a world-beater had presented himself.

Even as his goal haul this season has been acceptable, if he was given a continuous run as a second striker, we would see a Wayne Rooney that torments national and international defenses.

If he ever is to become the player we all hope he will one day become, he needs to be given a serious continuity. I hope for fans of Man U and England that Sir Alex Ferguson will reject the ideas of people such as Terry Venables and his amusing articles.

Nicklas Bendtner Gets His Revenge

After a series of less impressive displays, Nicklas Bendtner was surprisingly granted a spot in the starting 11 Tuesday night, against relegation guaranteed West Bromwich Albion.

The big Dane was geared up from the beginning, and he already scored his first goal in the fourth minute of the high paced match. After beating a couple of defenders, Bendtner's coolly placed shot, ended in the back of Scott Carson's goal.

Terrific peace of skill from the Dane, who has been much criticised lately for his nonchalant approach to the game. He has, amongst others, received some harsh criticism from every big newspaper in the country.

After Brunt, and thereafter Kolo Toure scored, Bendtner got the last goal on the scoringline with a brilliant goal, just before half-time.

During the second half, Bendtner continued his approach and made a terrific pass for Arshavin, only to see the newcomer fire the ball into an easy save from Scott Carson.

A few minutes after, he tried to reproduce his first goal, but he saw his shot bounce of the post to deny him his first professional hattrick.

Pictures of him in pink underwear have been put on one of the countries biggest newspapers, and therefore the revenge he got against WBA, must have tasted even sweeter, than otherwise.

Even though he has shown great potential ever since his arrival in the Arsenal first team, he has been the butt end of condemnation from fellow players, supporters and journalists alike.

Maybe his pink boots have enhanced the comical image that people have acquired of him in the last year or so.

However, one of the best footballers on the planet, and French icon, Franck Ribery has played in, and advertised for the same boots, and has never had to put up with unfair criticism as a result of it.

Nicklas Bendtner however, seems to take the blame for Arsenal's poor season, as if he has been awarded with as many starts as the two main strikers.

In fact, Bendtner has only started 11 league games this season, and has scored an acceptable five goals now. Compared to Adebayor's 20 starts and eight goals, and Robin van Persie's 20 starts and nine goals, his record actually claims him to be the most efficient of the three.

But Bendnter's goaltally is not the only thing speaking for his place in the starting lineup. His ability with the ball is in my opinion, definetely better than both Van Persie's and Adebayor's.

Any Arsenal supporter who saw the game against WBA, will speak for his abilities and agree that they outshone every other player on the pitch.

A boy of only 21 years of age and with such potential as him, must be recognized and appreciated more than what he is at the moment.

I, for one, would love to see him start every one of Arsenal's games. Especially if he is in the form he was in against WBA.

Carling Cup Final's Brightest Stars of the Future

This article is a preview to the Carling Cup final, that is being played later today.

By the top-managers, this trophy is merely seen as a bonus, and as a way of letting the younger players of the squad having a go at some piece of silverware.

That means that today's cup final will show a lot of variation in players. Manchester United will put out a starting eleven, with many young players, whereas Tottenham will put their strongest side out their.

Because of this, I have chosen to do the best starting eleven of today's starting line-ups, commenting and analyzing their future simultaneously.

Here is my personal opinion of the best players of today's final.

Goalkeeper: Ben Foster

Brilliant Ben, was considered one of the most promising goalkeepers in England, when he played for Watford during a two-year loan spell with them from 2005-'07.

This stint, saw his reputation increase with lightening speed, getting all the applause he deserved. His manager at Watford, Aidy Boothroyd, was pleased, to say the least, by his on-loan goalkeeper.

He even went as far as saying: "he's better than current Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar" and "I believe he is going to be the best goalkeeper in the world."

As a result of his form, he earned his first, and only, cap for England on Feb. 7 in a match against Spain.

Due to long injury spells, such as damaging his knee-ligaments, Ben Foster has had limited success at United, but remains a bright prospect for the future.

Right Back: Rafael da Silva

One of two identical twins, Rafael has stunned Manchester United's fans all over the world with his brilliant technique, his right mind and his defending.

Even though he was injured recently and will take no part in this game, he has been a key figure in United's march to the final, and therefore has to be included in this article.

Originally signed from Brazilian side, Fluminese in 2007, him and his brother Fabio, did not get a work permit before 2008, where he was finally ready to make his debut against Peterborough in a pre-season friendly.

He has shown fantastic form throughout the season, earning the United right back spot ahead of players like Gary Neville, John O'shea and Wes Brown.

No. 1 moment in his career so far, came in a game against Arsenal where he scored United's only goal with a stunning left footer.

Centre half: Jonny Evans

Sorry Spurs fans, neither Michael Dawson, Jonathan Woodgate or Ledley King has what it takes to claim the spot in front of the Northern Ireland international.

The Belfast born United player has been really impressive in his first full season for United.

Having signed for United's academy in 2006, Evans did not make his League Debut until September 2008, playing in United's 1-1 draw against rivals Chelsea.

Despite only being 20 years old at the time, Jonny wasn't overawed by Chelsea's big forwards, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson to call him: "The natural successor to Rio Ferdinand."

With Injuries and suspensions to first choice Rio and Vidic, Evans has proved to be a blessing from the sky in Manchester United's pursuit to gain a 3rd premiership medal on the trot.

Centre Half: Nemanja Vidic

Nemanja Vidic signed for Manchester United in January 2006 alongside Patrice Evra.

His first half-a-season did nothing to persuade the United supporters into believing that he was a prospect for the future.

He was often insecure, technically weak and not as strong as you would have expected.

However, Vidic proved his critics wrong in his first full season as a United player, being the stronger of the excellent partnership between himself and Rio Ferdinand.

Ironically, Vidic made his first appearance for United in the Carling Cup semi-final against Blackburn, substituting Ruud van Nistelrooy in the dying minutes.

He remains a red-hot favourite for the Player of The Year trophy.

Left Back: Gareth Bale

The choice of Gareth Bale comes as Fabio da Silva hasn't been able to show his talents on regular basis, and on the belief that Patrice Evra won't be a part of the Manchester United Squad today.

Gareth Bale signed for Tottenham in May 2007, after brushing off interests from Manchester United, amongst others.

He signed for £10 mill, and has had some difficulty living up to the high expectations. However, he has played 25 games this season with some good displays.

Before he signed for Tottenham his left foot was touted as being brilliant. This talent of his has not been fully shown yet, as he hasn't scored this season.

However, at 19 years old, the Welsh international has plenty of time to reveal his talents, and he could think about showing something today.

I chose to use him in defense, as that is where I see his future.

Right midfield: Aaron Lennon

An incredible talent and one of the brightest prospects in English football. When he signed for Spurs in 2005, Aaron was thought as an amazingly gifted winger, who would torment defenders for years to come.

And so he did, managing near 120 games for the Spurs during his first three seasons, with nearly 10 goals to follow. This earned him a World Cup call-up, from Sven Göran Eriksson, who also let him play on two distinct occasions.

When he replaced an injured David Beckham against Portugal in the quarter-finals, he showed everyone just what he could do, taking on international defenders and creating chances for England.

However, he came under wrong guidance with Juande Ramos, who did not seem to rate as much as former manager, Martin Jol.

Aaron Lennon could cause severe problems to Manchester United's chances of winning the Carling Cup today.

Centre Midfield: Darren Fletcher

The unsung hero deserves a spot in this talented side, as his performances has been brighter than bright this season.

In my opinion, United's most consistent midfielder, Flecther has upped his game, putting in a few goals this season, too.

He doesn't seem to ever get the applause he rightfully deserves, as other, more flamboyant players, stand in front of him in terms of interest.

Signed a new four-year contract with United in the summer, pleasing everyone around the club, especially the manager, as his talents are much needed.

Always plays an important role in Manchester United's most vital games.

Centre Midfield: Luka Modrić

Modrić won this hard-fought battle with Manchester United starlet Anderson.

Dubbed "the new Kaká", Modrić played a fantastic Euro 2008 after having agreed a six-year contract with spurs in April.

He is the clubs most expensive player, equalling the record set by Darren Bent in 2007, a fee of £16.5 mill.

The creative midfielder has had his ups and downs, but he will definitely show his qualities in the future. Juventus and Inter Milan are thought to want his services in the summer.

Left Midfield: Nani

This is a decision based upon lack of better options.

Nani had a decent debut season at Old Trafford, whereas his second has been disastrous.

Limited to Carling Cup status, Nani has taken a huge swipe in form, leaving the good impressions we got from him last season, to drown.

He has been very inconsistent, maybe due to a long Euro 2008 campaign, that saw him getting very little rest during the summer.

Signed for Manchester United for an undisclosed fee in 2007. Best game was played in the FA cup victory against Arsenal where he dazzled the defenders throughout the game. He was rightfully named Man of the Match, and scored a goal during the process.

Forward: Danny Welbeck

The Longsight born, 18-year-old center forward came bursting into our minds when he made his debut against Stoke, scoring a wonderful goal in the end of the match.

Since then, his impressive scoring record has continued in the Cup matches against Southampton and Derby County.

Due to his somewhat strong physique and technical ability, he has been compared to Arsenal striker Adebayor and former Arsenal, current Pompey striker Kanu.

I would play him as a forward, even as Sir Alex will put him on right wing today. I believe his talents are most likely to be revealed in attack, as he is a big, strong lad who can head and push off other defenders.

Prospect for the future.

Forward: Wayne Rooney

At 23 years of age, Wayne has already accomplished more than most footballers could wish to do in a whole career.

Since his £29 mill move from Everton in 2004, he has been instrumental to the success United have achieved over the last few years.

Touted as the most promising footballer of this nation, Wayne has proved himself worthy of these accolades. He has continued to score important goals for his club, but also has he been leading the assist charts every year since his arrival, only to be beaten this season by Dimitar Berbatov.

Sir Alex Ferguson finally got Wayne after having pursued his services, since Wayne was only 14 years old.

He came with a huge price tag, however, I doubt that any United supporter regrets the millions spent on this mega talent, who was once called: "the best talent this country has seen for 30 years" by the most influential person in the footballing world.

He is also considered to be the future captain of the United team, an element he will achieve once his feared temper, has eased up a bit.

He is a star of the past, the presence and the future.

Bench: Tomasz Kuszczak, Michael Dawson, Jonathan Woodgate, Jermaine Jenas, Michael Carrick, Roman Pavylchanko, Carlos Tevez.

The Saga of Daniel Agger: Give the Boy a New Contract

Since Daniel Agger stepped on to the pitch for Liverpool against Birmingham at the start of 2006, he has continued to impress Liverpool's fans with his wonderful skills.

The classy Dane is a perfect example of the importance of an unorthodox defender. He demonstrates security and also provides the team with an extraordinary threat in terms of his set piece skills and his up-field play. He also has a magnificent left foot.

Now, Agger might not be as strong defensively as Carragher or Skrtel, but he gives the team a whole new dimension when he is playing.

It is not particularly surprising that Liverpool has been "struggling" with the creative part of their game during his absence. Even as both Carragher and Skrtel are superb, they do not demonstrate any sort of goal threat.

This is proved by statistics that tells us that Carragher has scored a record five goals in 560 appearances, the same amount Agger has managed in 71. Skrtel has yet to score in 36 appearances.

I know that Agger has played a few games this season, some where Liverpool has drawn, yet this does not diminish the fact that he could very well have been that extra amount of creativity Liverpool so sorely missed in Steven Gerrard's absence.

If he was given a string of matches, combined with some more confidence from Benitez, Agger would be able to find the form that once earned him a large amount of applause. Some even thought he was the best defender in the Premier League; in terms of technique that is.

His partnership with Carragher was immense; while Carragher would take care of the hard jobs, Agger would supply the midfield with superb long range passes, goals, and a great overview.

Agger was, and still is, a great talent. In my opinion, one of the biggest around. So why are Liverpool not handing him a new contract?

Have Liverpool forgotten his talent? They certainly shouldn't have. European giants Real Madrid, Inter, and AC Milan interested and even the newly-rich Manchester City are pursuing his services.

I do think Agger has been treated unfairly with regards to Skrtel and all the injuries. He has not been given a fair chance, such as the one Skrtel was granted since his return.

Therefore, I understand why the frustration increases for him, as he can see his name being linked to the biggest clubs in Europe every day. Rafael Benitez does not appreciate him in the same way as he used to. He seems to have given him a second fiddle status.

So should he move on, or should he stay? And is he good enough to be in contention for the place as Liverpool's No. 1 defender?

Manchester United: Thank God for the FA

The English Football Association has once again managed to surprise and astonish every Manchester United fan around the globe. Me included.

It seems to me that the FA tries to make examples out of Manchester United's players and staff as often as they can. Simultaneously, other clubs (emphasis on Chelsea FC), seem to steer clear of "God's hand," even if their crimes are more serious.

Before any of you begin to criticize my arguments, with the usual "You're just a one-dimensional United fan," I would just like to say: Yes I am. But it happens that I have the facts to prove my points.

That being said, you all probably know why I am writing this article today, and why I am so sorely disappointed with the FA.

To those who are not aware, here it is:

As Chelsea had won a possible title-deciding game over Manchester United in April, Patrice Evra, Paul Scholes, and the lads were doing their weekly warm-down.

Sam Bethell, the groundsman at Stamford Bridge, asked the players to get off the park. Apparently, the players initially refused to do this, as it is very normal to use the actual ground to warm down.

Sam Bethell then, according to both Evra and Mike Phelan, used racial language to abuse Patrice. The players got into a hassle with the Chelsea staff, the security, and a couple of other players such as the England captain, who thought he was right to come and have a say.

Later, pictures came that showed Bethell holding his right hand back towards Evra, whilst being held by several security guards.

This was what happened, and it is of course obvious that the matter is so important that it should be discussed throughout the year (not really).

However, the incident itself is not the talking point; Patrice Evra was a few days ago charged with "violent behaviour" and fined 15.000£ and a four-match ban.

This is unfair to the player, the club, the supporters, and the other clubs of the league, who, of course believe that they live under a set of rules that applies to everyone.

Everyone, but Manchester United.

Let me start out by refreshing your memory: Chelsea-Burnley. Drogba was substituted into the game and scored a goal. A Burnley supporter threw a coin at him, where after he picked it up and threw it back into the crowd.

This is a break of the professional boundaries. What if he had hit a 10-year-old boy? I was disgusted. Result from the FA: a three-match ban.

So the FA thought that Evra's incident was worse than openly throwing a coin into a crowd?

A similar episode was Martin Keown's infamous celebration of when Ruud van Nistelrooy missed a penalty-kick in 2003. Keown rushed over, pushed van Nistelrooy, and shouted from the top of his lungs right into his ears. Other Arsenal players joined afterwards, but Keown stood out. Result from the FA: a three-match ban.

The absolute worst, most disgusting thing the FA have ever done is charging Rio Ferdinand after he missed a drug test.

I do agree it was stupid of Ferdinand to miss the test, however, he took it immediately afterwards and passed. Result from the FA: an eight-month ban and 50.000£. (He missed half a season, including the Euro 2004 competition.)

Not soon afterwards, in September 2004, Chelsea player Adrian Mutu failed the same test and was proven positive of cocaine-use. Result from the FA: a seven-month ban and 20.000£.

When I found out about this, I was absolutely disgusted. This is the worst piece of work the FA has ever done. And they do not really seem to hide the fact that they hate Manchester United, do they?

I would personally love to have a serious conversation with the board of the Football Association, but I doubt they will listen to a string of abusive swear words from an angry scouser.

What is your opinion of the FA? Have they acted correctly in these matters?

Bye Bye Carlito: We'll See You On the Other Side

For most Manchester United fans around the world, it is getting increasingly hard to believe that Carlos Tevez will be signing a permanent contract with the club. But why have things gone the way they have?

Sir Alex Ferguson's love for Dimitar Berbatov has been put as the most obvious reason. However, could other factors play their part too?

First of all, I would like to pay tribute to Tevez's achievements at Manchester United; especially as he played a big part in United's double-winning season last term. His work rate is tremendous, which is one of the many reasons why United fans have taken him to their hearts.

His technique is fabulous too; as he runs with the ball down the field, he almost never loses possession. He has got that special Argentinian type of play, where he runs with the ball between his legs. This makes it very hard for other players to take the ball off him without fouling him simultaneously.

He said from the beginning that he loved the club, its stature, its feel, its staff, and its players. He was bought as a future hero.

While journalists and football debaters, including myself, heavily doubted that he and Wayne Rooney could play together as their style of play was to similar, they certainly proved us wrong with a string of beautiful displays.

Even as the season went on he was outshining Rooney, most notably in the Champions League, where he played most games and stayed on for the full 90 minutes, including the final—which Wayne did not.

So what is the specific reason for his lack of play this term?

He was the main striker, of course, in the beginning of the season as Berbatov had not yet been signed, and Rooney suffered from sickness. He did well, scoring against Liverpool at Anfield.

But as Rooney came back, Tevez got fewer and fewer minutes on the field, and it came to an ultimate low when he was substituted last week at Celtic Park. This was especially disappointing for him as he was arguably United's most dangerous player.

It seems as though Ferguson persistently wants to use Berbatov for the full 90 minutes every game. Even when he plays like a bag of potatoes, he is not substituted. And mind you, this happens a lot.

Another reason could be Ferguson's need for a different type of striker. Benzema, Huntelaar, and David Villa are continuously linked, and even as it is hard to see any of those coming to United, it seems as Ferguson has already chosen to use his money elsewhere, sadly.

Surely Tevez has to consider his staying severely. And rightly so. My main concern is this, however:

As Ferguson will give up on Tevez in the summer, and mind you, he will, Tevez will join a big club like Real Madrid or Inter. Maybe even another English club.

And like the tragedy of nemesis, I am absolutely certain that Carlitos will one day play against United in a big European game, and get his rightfully deserved revenge.

Liverpool's Early Form: Just a Fluke, or a Title-Winning Side in the Making?

After Sir Alex Ferguson's recent comments that Liverpool's impressive win over Chelsea was the result he wanted, I would find it interesting to discuss whether this is the general opinion amongst supporters.

"That was the result I wanted," said Ferguson with a grin. Knowing that most United fans would want nothing else than for the scousers to lose out, this seems an unusual remark.

Chelsea have been the main threat to United's success in recent years, but should he really dismiss Liverpool's challenge so easily?

After all, they have won more times than United this season, and have managed to achieve what United haven't been able to do for many years—beat Chelsea away.

This Liverpool team is without a doubt stronger than last season; Torres has a new partner in Keane, who, admittedly, hasn't found his previous level yet, but is still a classy striker.

They also have three world class central defenders in Carragher, Agger, and Skrtel, with Hyypia to back them up. They have been looking as solid as ever during this season, and Agger has fit in well since his return from injury.

His passing of the ball from defence is up there with the best in the league, and his assist against Wigan was very impressive. If he can keep up his form, Liverpool have a very good defence.

On the wings, Albert Riera has come in. He has impressed in the last couple of games against Wigan and Manchester City, and against United to be fair. He has proved to be a good buy and is perhaps the only winger, in the classic sense, that Liverpool have.

The midfield looks solid, with either Alonso, Lucas, or Mascherano to partner Gerrard in the engine room. Alonso has performed well in the absence of Mascherano, and Gerrard has, despite other claims, really been putting in some masterful displays, most recently in the win over Portsmouth.

However, one change from last season that hasn't been discussed as much, is Rafa Benitez's dismissal of the squad rotation system. Perhaps it was this factor that restricted Liverpool from showing their real strengths and prevented them, until now, from really challenging for the title.

Liverpool have won 26 points out of 30. They have beaten both United and Chelsea. So surely Fergie, and the rest of the league, should consider them as genuine title contenders.

Top 5 Candidates To Succeed Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson has now, more or less, set a date on his retirement, so who would be the best and most likely to succeed him.

In order of opinion:

5. Steve Bruce

The Wigan manager was a great personality and player for United. His managerial career has yet to blossom, but this may be due to lack of potential and, lets face it, money. His teams can play entertaining football (which is highly wanted at United), but when they do, they often lose it in the end, best shown in the Liverpool 2-3 game.

He would, without a doubt, enjoy great respect from the English players, but the foreign players may not know all that much about him. He certainly hasn't got the Alex Ferguson air about him.

Unlikely choice, but some United supporters may welcome an old hero back at Old Trafford. Enjoyed a relegation with Birmingham, whilst his achievements with Wigan aren't as bad, he has been close in the last seasons.

4. Mark "Sparky" Hughes

Did not, perhaps, make the smartest of choices when signing for the Citizens, however, he had a great playing career and is beginning to thrive as a manager.

Hughes had a shaky start as a manager, with some less impressing results with the Welsh national team. However, after joining Blackburn, he managed to turn a relegation threatened side into a feared one. Travelling to Ewood Park was never easy during the Hughes era.

His physical team, spiced with the technique of players such as Morten Gamst Pedersen, Roque Santa Cruz, and Benni McCarthy, always caused trouble for the "Big Four" teams. Most notable was that he beat Man Utd twice and Chelsea and Arsenal once in the season of 2004-05.

He made the team into a genuine contender for the European places whilst playing some great football. Would be welcome back at Old Trafford, where he had some glorious years.

3. Guus Hiddink

Considering his managerial career and personality, this would arguably be my favourite choice; his career is second to none, in terms of achievement.

We know him best for his treble with PSV Eindhoven and Euro 1988 triumph with the Netherlands. Other achievements are 4th place with South Korea in World Cup 2002 and 4th place with the Netherlands in the1998 World Cup.

He has also led Australia to the second round of the 2002 World Cup, winning 2nd place in a group of good teams—Brazil, Croatia and Japan—and was unlucky to lose a penalty in the 90th minute against Italy in the second round.

That penalty should never been given.

He has also transferred Russia into a genuine contender for the big prizes. In this year's Euros he led Russia to the semifinals, their best position since the break-up of the Soviet Union. He stated that he would continue in Russia until 2010's World Cup, which could be the same time as Ferguson retires.

Good choice, but is it possible?

2. Roy Keane

The former United captain has thrived in the manager position since his take-over at Sunderland. He transferred a relegation-bound Championship team into a Premier League side in just a single season.

He has often been described as Sir Alex Ferguson's voice on the pitch, and now a miniature of him. He would without a doubt enjoy great respect from any player he might come across due to his reputation and achievements.

As he has learned from Sir Alex, supporters pay to watch football. From this he has tried to manage his teams into playing entertaining football with the likes of Kieran Richardson and Djibril Cissè helping this cause.

Would be a great manager, but can he handle the pressure yet? And would it be wise to choose someone who is a copy of Sir Alex?

1. Josè Mourinho

A funny love-hate relationship has always surrounded this man.

When he came to Chelsea, we all loved to hate him, and everyone cheered when he lost. However, in two seasons he won two league titles, one FA Cup, and two Carling cups. Of course, he did spend a lot of money, but the players he has managed always says the most positive things about him.

When he left England, I for one, was sad. His comments and opinions were part of making football entertaining in those years, where Chelsea was THE team in the league.

He has always respected Ferguson, and as he said: "I want to go back to the country I love, England". What other team could you imagine that he wanted to manage?

Would be the perfect choice. At least for some time.

Why Cristiano Ronaldo Should Be Sold to Madrid

I know, I know.

We're all getting tired of talking about Ronaldo's possible move to Madrid. What he did in the summer seems already to be forgotten by Sir Alex, his teammates, and us—his supporters. But this does not lower his wish, his desire to play for another club.

It is obvious that he still wants to play for Madrid. Why should that change? It has been the boy's favourite team his whole life. His mother has stated that she will do everything to one day see her boy in the royal white shirt; and he hasn't denied it either.

Now, I too have read all the rubbish about him not smiling, because he does not want to play for United. That's rubbish. I sincerely believe that he's not smiling because he thinks he isn't playing well, and rightly so. He has been a shadow of himself in recent weeks.

My point is this, though: If he truly has his heart set on United, why has he not made that clear? Every time he is asked about his future, he says he'll at least stay here for another season, or that God is the only one knowing his future.

Seeing that United now has Berbatov, Rooney, Tevez, Park, Nani, Anderson, Fletcher, Carrick, Hargreaves, Scholes and Giggs to fill the front six spots, would it not be reasonable to consider selling Ronaldo for a fee as high as £60 million?

We could definitely use the money. First of all, we could use it to secure Carlos Tevez. Tevez has been magnificent since joining, and has committed himself from the very beginning, saying that he loves United and wants to stay. The other half could be used to either buy another forward or winger.

Now, I agree that he is one of our best players (second to Rooney only), but the fuss that is made about him every single summer is something we could live without. I am sure that his ego is welcome at Madrid, even though they claim not to want him anymore (rubbish).

So what would be the downsides of Ronaldo's leaving, and who is good enough to replace him?
