Rockies Skipper Jim Tracy Named NL Manager Of The Year By Sporting News

Sporting News has named Colorado Rockies manager the 2009 NL Manager of the Year.

A panel of 22 MLB managers voted and selected Tracy for the first Manager of the Year award in his career.

Under Tracy, the Rockies went 74-42 since taking over and ended the regular season 32-games over .500 and earned a Wild Card spot.

Giving this award to Tracy appeared to be a no brainer for anyone who payed attention to the Rockies since Tracy took over on May 29th after the club dismissed Clint Hurdle.

There have been and continue to be some doubters of not only Tracy, but the Rockies. Hopefully this inspires the naysayers to pay attention to the Rockies going forward.

Denver Broncos Thump San Diego Chargers, Take Reigns of AFC West at 6-0

All you can really say is WOW!!

The Denver Broncos are 6-0 for the first time since 1998 and we all know the outcome of that perfect start.

The air in Denver is much sweeter today than it was just seven short weeks ago when everyone including the staunchest Bronco fans had already called the season, the new coaching staff, and the once weak defense a failure.

This win puts the Broncos not only in a giant lead for the AFC West crown but also among the few elite and unbeaten teams in the NFL.

Monday nights game started off in classic Broncos vs. Chargers fashion with the teams trading blows, in fact the Chargers lead at the half 20-17.

The first half was about big plays, the Broncos wide receiver returned not one but two punts for touchdowns making him only the 10th player in NFL history to accomplish such a feat the Broncos won by 11 points so there is your big time player of the game.

After half the Broncos laid it out for the football world to see, this team is the real deal and defense is the way they get it done.

The amazing and growing list of statistics the Broncos defense continues to drop jaws around the game.

The Broncos held the Chargers to only three second half points, the Broncos have outscored opponents 76-10 in the second half.

Linebacker Elvis Dumervil now leads the NFL with 10 sacks, enough said there.

The Broncos in have not allowed a second half third down conversion over a MONTH, that's right you just read that no second half third down conversions in over a moth giving in only 21 out of 78 attempts.

Then as if the bone crushing defense wasn't enough Bronco QB Kyle Orton played a flawless game going 20-of-29 with 229 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, tucked inside of those stats was a great fourth quarter performance with Orton going 11-of-15 for 146yards and those two touchdowns.

With this win the Broncos take a commanding 3.5 game lead over the Chargers and look to be running away with the AFC West, if the Broncos can continue this dominance through the toughest part of their schedule following the bye week the Broncos could be the odds on favorite to win the Super Bowl.

We will have to wait and see but for now the Broncos appear to be the story of the season.

Brad Hawpe Not On The Market, Says Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd

Colorado Rockies right fielder Brad Hawpe is not on the market as previously speculated.

FoxSports.com is reporting that Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd has no interest in dealing the 2009 All-Star despite being a non-factor during the NLDS for the Rockies.

Many members of the local media and fans alike had speculated that the Rockies would deal Hawpe based on his lackluster performance down the stretch. He hit a weak .209 with only 10 RBI down the stretch providing no offensive lift to the Rockies' postseason run.

Hawp started 2009 on fire and at one point in the season was the only spark the Rockies had. That led to his first career All-Star appearance. Hawpe finished the year hitting .284 with 23 HR and 86 RBI.

The remainder of Hawpe’s contract is not terribly expensive. The Rockies have him for 2010 at $7.5 million with a no buy out $10 million option for 2011.

Broncos and Chargers Looking to Prove Themselves In Week Six

On the verge of Week Six, the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers are two teams looking to make a statement early in the season.

While the Broncos are one of the hottest teams in the NFL with a 5-0 record, there are still some doubters out there waiting for them to fall.

Surprisingly, defense has been the biggest shock in Denver. Through five games, the Broncos have only allows seven points in the second half, which is an amazing stat compared to the 2008 version of this defense.

The key to the game for the Broncos will be to get pressure on Phillip Rivers. It seems apparent that the Chargers can't run the ball, so if the Broncos can prevent Rivers from getting into the seven-step drop they should be able to shut down the Charger offense.

On the other side of the ball, the Chargers must find a way to stop the run if they are going to have a chance. Broncos back Knowshon Moreno has racked up 337 rushing yards and Correll Buckhalter has added an additional 267 yards.

In addition the Chargers run defense has been less than impressive giving up an average of 151.1 yards per game which ranks 27th in the NFL.

The Chargers are at a different point than I think anyone expected. This week, the team's GM AJ Smith called the team out, saying they had been soft and embarrassing to this point in the season.

The Chargers have owned the series against the Broncos in recent time, winning five of the last six, including the 52-21 dismantling in 2008 to give the Chargers a route to the playoffs.

It seems as though the Broncos aren't the same team that was beat down last season. The question becomes, can the Chargers show any resemblance of that 2008 team?

Not to call it good this early in the season, but a Broncos win over the Chargers this week could make it next to impossible for the Chargers or any other team to catch the Broncos in the AFC West race.

Phillies-Dodgers: Brad Lidge Shows Poise, Phillies Swipe Game One

Game One of the 2009 NLCS proved to be a slugfest dabbled with stretches of great pitching by both the Dodgers and Phillies.

As the game started, it looked as though this was going to be a pure pitchers duel; Cole Hamels and Clayton Kershaw came out throwing heat.

Both Hamels and Kershaw stayed out of big trouble early, with the exception of Hamels giving up a second-inning, one-run homer to James Loney.

Then, the fifth inning started and so did the fireworks. Kershaw gave up five runs and three hits, including a three-run jack from Carlos Ruiz, making it 3-1 in favor of the Phillies.

Then, with two on and two out, Kershaw faced off with Ryan Howard and Howard made Kershaw pay by smacking a double and scoring two, putting the Phillies up 5-1 and giving Howard his 18th RBI this postseason.

Kershaw was pulled after throwing 137 pitches in four-and-two-thirds innings.

The fifth inning also proved to be trouble for Hamels, who gave up three runs, including a two-run home run to Manny Ramirez.

Hamels lasted into the sixth inning when he had runners on first and second with only one out.

All was fairly quiet until the eighth inning, when Phillies left fielder Raul Ibanez got a hold of one and took a George Sherrill pitch yard for a three-run home run, putting the Phillies up 8-4 going into the bottom of the eighth.

The Dodgers would give Ryan Madson a bit of trouble, scoring two runs and cutting it closer.

Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton did what he does and shut the Phillies down in the top of the ninth, setting the stage for a Brad Lidge close.

During the regular season, Lidge struggled, blowing a league-leading 11 saves, but showed signs of his former self in the NLDS against the Rockies.

Matt Kemp singled to start the inning, followed by Casey Blake hitting into a double play.

Lidge would walk James Loney after taking him to a full count and would then get Ronnie Belliard to pop out to Rollins in shallow left field, giving Lidge his third consecutive postseason save in as many opportunities.

It looked like the Brad Lidge of old: He was in complete control of his pitches and that patented slider was as nasty as it was in 2008.

The Dodgers and Phillies square off again Friday at 4:07 ET.

Making The Case: Jim Tracy NL Manager Of The Year

I realize that the Rockies were just ousted from the playoffs in one of the most miraculous comebacks we will probably see during the 2009 MLB playoffs.

With that out of the way, you cannot ignore the way Jim Tracy managed the Rockies into the playoffs where just five months ago no one, not even Rockies fans, expected the club to be.

The 2009 Jim Tracy story begins on May 29th when Tracy took over as skipper following the dismissal of Clint Hurdle, at that point the Rockies were 10 games below .500 and 14.5 games behind the Dodgers for the NL West Crown.

From the moment Tracy took over, it was evident to anyone paying attention that he was bringing consistency to a frazzled and disheveled group of talented ball players.

Just six games in to the Jim Tracy era the Rockies started a club tying and MLB leading 11 game win streak followed by a six consecutive win encore.

By the All-Star break people were starting to pay attention to the baseball happenings in the mile-high city, including having the leagues first ten game winner in Jason Marquis.

Going into August, the Rockies were ten games over .500 and had the Dodgers in their sights for the NL West.

Tracy had not only the team believing but the town as well, people on the street were talking about the Rockies and the stands were filling up headed down the stretch. At this point, it was obvious that Tracy had the Rockies focused and not willing to let down as the Wild Card and NL West race was in full swing.

As September started, the Rockies were 14 games above .500, 5.5 games behind the Dodgers, and one game up on the San Francisco Giants for the Wild Card—a lead the Rockies would never relinquish.

The following four or so weeks of the season proved to be the second most exciting stretch of baseball in franchise history (second only to the 2007 run).

However, there was a distinct difference between the 2009 campaign and the 2007 run. Under Tracy the 2009 version proved to be steady and patient as opposed to white knuckled and chaotic not to say there weren’t any tense moments but strategy was far more obvious.

The Rockies would carry the same hard working self-less style of play into the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies and would come up short to the defending World Champions.

While the story didn't end the way Tracy and the rest of Rockies Nation had envisioned the skipper’s performance deserves proper respect and reward.

All of you folks in the Costal markets probably won't give Tracy the respect he deserves, but let's compare him to the other candidates for NL Manager of the year.

Of course there is Joe Torre who is going to be the front runner. Let's face it, Torre and the Dodgers did exactly what they were supposed to do which was win NL West which with the exception of the Rockies may have been one of the worst divisions in all of baseball.

Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel will also get a sniff, again though the Phillies did what they were supposed to do and defend their title.

Before you go to cast your vote do Tracy and Rockies Nation a favor, realize that at one point early in the season the Rockies were an after-thought and ask Rick Reilly how highly he thought of this organization on opening day and how the gold dome on the state capital tastes.

For the first time in franchise history the Rockies had five 10 game winners for an organization that has been seen as a graveyard for pitchers, the one variable was Jim Tracy.

Tracy has brought a no excuses, expect to win attitude to town it showed down the stretch and it will be evident as the Rockies go through this offseason and into spring training.

No Manager in baseball deserves this honor more than Jim Tracy, you can expect more of the same for a few years to come as the Rockies will look to be back in the mix again for the 2010 season.

When voting comences in a couple of weeks go to www.mlb.com and vote for Jim Tracy!!

Patience to Be Tested, as U.S. Open Resumes at Bethpage

After Thursday's round one was halted by rain, play has resumed on Bethpage Black.

The question looming is will there be a Sunday finish to the 2009 U.S. Open or will it go into next week?

Mike Davis of the USGA is quoted as saying "an ideal goal would be to get Round 2 finished by Saturday." Based on the current weather forecast that may be tough.

With conditions so wet it turns an already difficult course a wet hell, the field will have to play very calculated and strike the ball extremely well.

The rain has completely changed the way the course plays. As Friday's continuation of round one begins, club selection seems to be the critical topic. A 3-wood will be replaced with a Driver and an easy 9-iron shot will now be a challenging 5-iron.

Putting will be a major test, as the greens will slow considerably, making it tough to keep scores low.

Also lift, clean, and place, which allows for tournaments to save time, will not be allowed by the USGA in this tournament. The ball must be played as it lies.

In 2002, Tiger Woods won this very tournament at -3 and the only player under par, in the 2009 version of the U.S. Open, it will be amazing if the winner posts much more than a -1.

Phil Mickelson, The Peoples Champion

Phil Mickelson has become the unofficial favorite golfer of Bethpage Black, and for this weekend it seems is though the rest America is following suit.

Phil and his family have recently been faced with adversity after his wife Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer and will have surgery on July 1.

After a few weeks off Mickelson played in the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, TN and finished in 59th place, despite the finish Lefty feels as though his swing maybe better than it ever has.

That resilience is what is drawing people to Phil.

In the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black Mickelson finished second to Tiger Woods, but the story surrounding Phil was the support of the New York crowd and how they rallied around to help him try and get his first major.

The momentum in fan base has done nothing but grow in Mickelson's corner, even Tiger fans are rooting for him at times.

Mickelson was scheduled to tee of at 1:36 Eastern but due to the weather that has obviously been delayed, which is actually intensifying the excitement and support surrounding Mickelson.

As this week unfolds it should fun to watch Phil work though the adversity and look to be Woods and the field.

If Mickelson can control his emotions and put like he did in the 2002 Open this has the makings of one the best stories in golf history.

Rays-Rockies: Colorado Gets Tenacious, Cook Ties Record

One game after the Tampa Bay Rays broke the Colorado Rockies 11-game winning streak, the Rockies returned the favor ending the Rays six-game streak.

From the first pitch, it was visible the Rockies were going to fight until the end.

Aaron Cook (6-3) went seven innings, giving up eight hits and three runs, posting his 58th career win as a Rocky, tying him with Jason Jennings for most wins in franchise history.

Cook had an impressive outing and proved why he is the clubs ace. Even when he got into trouble, Cook showed confidence and fought his way out of it.

Troy Tulowitzki continued to show signs of improvement. Tulo hit a three-run homer in the second inning to put the Rockies on the board first.

Tulo has changed his stance since Jim Tracy has taken over—making him more upright—which seems to be paying off as he is not missing the high pitches he was at the start of the season.

Catcher Chris Ianetta also looks to be getting back to old ways going 2-for-3 and hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Garrett Atkins continues to be a non-factor going 0-for-3 in the contest.

Field Set To Take on Bethpage at 109th U.S. Open-Play Suspended Until Friday

Play has been suspended until Friday due to the weather conditions.

There is a four way tie for first at -1 with Jeff Brehaut leading thru 11 holes.

Tiger Woods is +1 thru 6 holes.

As the rain falls over Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, NY, the field of players get ready for what looks to be a long and soggy week.

The Black course on Bethpage has a reputation of being nasty and unforgiving. Now add a consistent rain and you have a recipe for what may be the most challenging U.S. Open in history.

Going into the week, the clear favorite is Tiger Woods, who is chasing his 15th major championship. That may not be such a given with the weather involved.

Tiger won the Memorial Tournament in Murfield Village, Ohio nine days ago and hit all 14 fairways impressively. It would appear that it will take an act of god—such as the weather—to slow Tiger down.

Big focus will also be on the play of Phil Mickelson whose wife Amy was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mickelson took a three-week break to spend time with his family and returned a week ago to play in the St. Jude Classic where he tied for 59th.

Lefty has a couple things on his side: He will most certainly be the crowd favorite. In 2002, the Bethpage crowd took Mickelson in and made him one of their own.

If Phil can harness the support from the crowd along with his emotions this could be a magical moment in golf history.

Watch for hole number seven to be a factor even with the hole being moved up. Number seven has the mark of one of the toughest holes in the game. Typically the par four lies at 525 yards on a dry day.

The PGA has moved it up to play 489 to avoid standing water, this may be a big break for the first day of the tournament but look for it to produce some high scores either way.

As groups start to tee off this morning, there many things for golf fans to ponder but no matter how it goes down it will make for a great Fathers Day treat.

Streak Is Over, Rockies Back In The Hunt?

There is a noticeable mood difference in the Denver area as the Rockies showed they are still actually playing baseball and not hosting summer social gatherings at Coors Field. After tying a franchise record 11 game win streak the town is buzzing a bit!

There were remnants of the 2007 World Series run, the Rockies are back to being discussed on sports radio, Rockies apparel is being displayed prominently at local sporting goods stores, and waitresses are even talking about them again.

As the 11 game win streak comes to an end the Colorado Rockies find themselves in a good position to become a contender with the All-Star break approaching.

Now just two games below .500 the Rockies are another shorter win streak away from the Wild Card Spot and 11.5 games back from the Dodgers in the NL West.

Of course with all of that being said several things need to happen in order for the Rox to be a legitimate contender:

1. Jorge De La Rosa has to quit melting down early in ballgames, or be sent on assignment to Colorado Springs. He is leading the club in strikeouts but his tendency to fall apart quickly will plague the club as they get deeper into the season.

2. Deal Garrett Atkins. He has the potential to become a major distraction and his Mendoza like .208 batting average isn't helping the Rockies cause.

3. Jason Marquis needs to continue to dominate and use his experience to teach others how to grind though the season. Marquis is leading the Rox in wins going 8-4 thus far and has the most experience on the staff.

4. Houston Street needs to stay consistent and keep the Rockies ahead when he has the ball. Street changed up his foot positioning on the mound and that seems to have fixed his early season troubles. Street has a 1.08 ERA for May and June.

I know it is still early and no one wants to put the cart before the horse but the Rockies have the talent to mix things up and compete the rest of the summer.

Since Jim Tracy took over as skipper the Rockies are 13-5, and the team seems to be finding it's identity, and as long as ugly habits don't reappear the Rox should have a chance.

Clint Hurdle On The Hot Seat: How Much Time Does He Have Left?

With the 2009 season in full swing the Colorado Rockies have yet to show they are even a contender for the NL West.

The Rockies have a division worst 11-16 record, going 9-13 in the NL West for April, which is the teams longest stretch of division games.

It puts them 8.5 games back from the Dodgers in the first month of the season.

This does not bode well for Clint Hurdles future with the club.

Look I like Hurdle, I think he is a great guy and he is great in the Denver community however he is not leading this team in the right direction.

This team is full of quality players with high levels of talent, but it has yet to find any sort of identity. There is virtually no consistency anywhere with the exception of parts of the pitching staff, which boasts a 4.87 ERA.

If there is any shot for the Rockies to seeing the post season it has to start now. Let's face it the 2007 World Series run had a mystical aura about it, some would even call it a fluke.

This season’s version of the Rockies do not appear to have that same fortitude to pull off a late run and get them in the playoffs.

With the recent firing of Arizona Diamondbacks Manager Bob Melvin, it turns the spotlight to Hurdle.

The opportunity is ripe in the NL West, the Dodgers are now consumed with the Manny steroid scandal and the rest of the division is equally as messy as the Rockies.

If the Rockies plan to emerge at the top with all of the NL West turmoil Hurdle has to go, as much as it pains me to say that, clichés and platitudes aren’t getting it done.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, Dodger outfielder Manny Ramirez has tested positive for an illegal performance enhancing drug and will be suspended for 50 games.

It is expected that the MLB's official announcement will come sometime Thursday.

Sources close to the situation say the slugger is on medication for a personal medical issue, which led to the test result.

If the suspension holds up, Ramirez won't return until July 3, when the Dodgers face the Padres. To this point in the season, Ramirez is hitting .348 with six home runs and 20 RBI.

Regardless of the outcome, look for this sittuation to cause the Dodgers big problems.

"In the Hole" with the Rockies: Volume 1.0

1. Will Todd Helton be a contributor? If so, for how long?

Todd Helton has spent the entire winter rehabbing after having arthroscopic surgery on his lower back Sept. 30 to relieve pressure on a bulging disc.

Helton has progressed through his rehab well and is hitting at full speed.

Going into spring training, there are two questions on the minds of the Rockies organization and fans alike: How many games will Helton play, and will he even be close to the Helton we have seen dominate the batter's box for the past 11 years?

In 2008 Helton only appeared in 83 games while hitting .264 and 29 home runs, but by the end of the season it was rumored that he couldn't even walk.

Helton has a lifetime batting average of .328 and when healthy is the heart of the Rockies lineup. For the Rockies to have success in 2009, Helton needs to produce runs for more than 130 games.

2. The Rotation and the Bullpen

With Jeff Francis apparently out for the season and Jorge De La Rosa being named the early fourth starter, the Rockies must pinpoint and fine-tune the rotation.

Joining De La Rosa in the other three spots will be Aaron Cook, Jason Marquis, and Ubaldo Jimenez—then it gets interesting.

The good news for the Rockies is there will be no shortage of competition for that fifth spot.

Going into camp the Rockies will work out a host of pitchers, including six that have been with the Rockies organization at some point in their career.

Battling for the five spot will be:

Greg Smith 7-16, 4.16 ERA in 2008

Jason Hirsh 0-0, 8.31 ERA in 2008

Franklin Morales 1-2, 6.39 ERA in 2008

Matt Belisle 1-4, 7.28 ERA in 2008

Josh Fogg 2-7, 7.58 ERA in 2008
Glendon Rusch 5-5, 5.16 ERA in 2008

Randy Flores 1-0, 5.26 ERA in 2008

With that many options, Clint Hurdle and the rest of the Rockies coaching staff will have their plates full evaluating every pitch thrown by this cast.

At this point there appears not to be a favorite, but this is by far the most pitching talent the Rockies have ever brought to spring training.

The other pitcher duel will be for the closing spot where newly acquired Huston Street will battle Manny Corpas, which should be the most intriguing part of Rockies spring training.

Breaking down the 2008 numbers, it looks like Street has the upper hand.

Corpas 4/13 saves with a 4.52 ERA vs. Street 18/24 saves with a 3.78 ERA.

But don't count Corpas out; if he can return to the dominating form he showed in the 2007 season, this matchup will get good and may even spill over into the regular season.

3. Troy Tulowitzki's swing, health, and mental state

In 2007 Tulowitzki had what may the best rookie year for a shortstop in history, hitting .291 with 24 home runs and a record .987 FPCT. The Rockies rewarded Tulo with a six-year, $30 million contract, and that is when reality set in for the 24-year-old.

The 2008 season proved to a challenge on several levels for Tulowitzki, as a torn left quad and a lacerated right hand kept him out of 59 games.

Tulowitzki went 48-377 with a .263 average, which he was able to bring up with a late season push where he hit .327.

All of these challenges seem to be in the rear view for now, Tulowitzki has to come to spring training with his head on right and the experience of last year and his big contract far from his mind.

If he can stay true to his skills and focus on every at bat, Tulowitzki could emerge as the leader of the Rockies organization and a household name throughout the league.

Jorge De La Rosa Joins Colorado Rockies Rotation

With only four days remaining until pitchers and catchers report, the Colorado Rockies have named Jorge De La Rosa to their rotation list.

Before the start of camp, it looks like Jeff Francis will be out for the season. The Rockies are thinking ahead to make this move—hopefully it isn't a premature one.

De La Rosa appeared in 28 games last season. He finished the year with a 10-8 record with a 4.92 ERA.

Lifetime, De La Rosa is 25-31 with an awful 5.55 ERA. Combined with his flair for the dramatic, it is enough to scare people away.

De La Rosa's redemption comes from the final six weeks of the 2008 season. He went 5-2 in eleven games (nine starts), posting a fantastic 2.45 ERA and 44 strikeouts.

It was enough to get manager Clint Hurdle's attention. This is why Hurdle decided to insert De La Rosa into the mix.

The question is—will De La Rosa produce at that level for an entire season?

As long as De La Rosa can harness his emotion and use his left-handed pitching prowess on a regular basis, the Rockies should be in pretty good shape. It is important to note the Rockies only have the No. 5 spot up for grabs going into camp.

Jeff Francis Talking Surgery: Rockies Prepare for Worst

With nine days until pitchers report to camp, Colorado Rockies Pitcher Jeff Francis, who has been bothered by soreness in his left shoulder, decided he will have surgery sometime after Feb. 19 if the pain fails to subside.

Francis will report to camp in order to get looks at live hitters, but being as he hasn't thrown off a mound all winter, things aren't looking up for the Rockies 2007 Ace.

A recent MRI showed no structural damage to the 28-year-old left-hander's throwing arm so the surgery would be of an exploratory nature in order to determine what the problem is and how to fix it.

This surgery could put Francis out of the lineup for most of the year.

In 2008 it was very apparent that there was an issue with Francis' throwing arm; he went 4-10 with a 5.01 ERA following a great 2007 run in which he posted 17 wins.

The Rockies have spent a good deal of time and money on the pitching staff this offseason. The club has built a good core of pitchers of which Francis is included, so this changes it up a bit as far as the top five in the rotation.

The additions of Jason Marquis, Josh Fogg, Glendon Rusch, and Matt Belisle plus the stable of Greg Smith, Jorge De La Rosa, Jason Hirsh, Greg Reynolds, and Franklin Morales there will be no shortage of competition for both the number four and five spots.

This will be a very exciting camp for both the Rockies and their fans; there has not been this level of competition for a Rockies pitching staff since the club's inception in 1993.

Matt Murton Becomes Newest Colorado Rockies OF

According to AP reports, the Colorado Rockies have dealt minor league infielder Corey Wimberly to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for outfielder Matt Murton.

Lifetime, Murton has hit .288 with 106 RBI's in 317 games played. He hit .100 in nine games with the A's last season. He finished the season with Triple-A Sacramento, hitting .277.

Murton, a four-year pro, is known for his ability to work the corners of the outfield, which poses a couple of questions for the Rockies.

From a fielding standpoint, Murton is a viable replacement for Matt Holliday.

As good as he is in the field, it seems his bat lacks the pop the Rockies are looking for, especially against left-handed pitchers. Murton has hit .125 in his career against lefties.

This will make it a challenge for Murton to have much of an impact in 2009.

Colorado Rockies Sign Garrett Atkins and Avoid Arbitration

The Colorado Rockies and third baseman Garrett Atkins reached an agreement on Tuesday, locking Atkins up for another year.

A one-year deal worth $7.05 million makes Atkins the second highest-paid player on the roster behind first baseman Todd Helton and is packed with incentives for everything from plate appearances to playoff success may prove to be the Rockies most valuable move of this off season.

This deal will allow Atkins to move into spring training with his head clear and focused on Baseball.

The Rockies need Atkins to emerge as a big time leader after the loss of Matt Holliday and this deal shows the fan base as well as Atkins that is what that is the direction the Rockies are headed.

Atkins hit .286 with 99 RBI and 21 home runs in 2008.

The Colorado Rockies Will Look to Jason Marquis to Post Wins

As part of a re-tooling of both the batting and pitching lineups, the Rockies traded Luis Vizcaino to the Cubs for veteran Jason Marquis.

With 18 days left until pitchers report to spring training, it appears Marquis already has his plate full. Reports are that Rockies pitcher Jeff Francis may not be ready for opening day, which puts Marquis in the spotlight to pick up the slack.

Winning seems to follow Marquis. He has put up ten plus wins in the last fives seasons with a career ERA of 4.55. He was with the St. Louis Cardinals during their dominant runs a few years back. Most recently he helped engineer back to back NL Central titles with the Cubs.

Another bonus for the Rockies is that Marquis seems to dominate the NL West. He is 18-14 with a 2.54 ERA against NL West teams including his 3-0 record at Coors Field.

All of this being said, Marquis could prove to be the savior and key to the success of the ball club for the 2009 campaign.

As Francis and the Rockies try to sort out the shoulder injury that plagued Francis most of 2008, this season could really put Marquis among the superstars of the league.

Rox Scouting Report: Carlos Gonzalez

Now that the dust has settled on the Matt Holliday trade it is time to watch the rest unfold. As part of the deal the Rockies acquired 23 year old Carlos Gonzalez, which may turn out to be a real steal for the Rockies.

Gonzalez hit .242 with four home runs and 26 RBI with the Oakland Athletics in his first major league season. While Gonzalez will have to compete for a roster spot, which isn't a lock, but if he gets his swing tuned up and shows a bit more discipline look for him to have a breakout year in 2009.

During Winter Ball in Venezuela, Gonzalez posted a .292 average and has a proven ability to produce runs with 26 RBI in 25 games.

While in the Arizona Diamondbacks farm system Gonzalez was touted as one of not he best outfield prospect around.

For Rockies fans let's hope we get to watch that come to fruition in front of our eyes.

Rockies Spring Preview: 2009 A Make Or Break Year?

The Colorado Rockies are starting the 2009 campaign at a bit of a crossroads. There is a great deal of unanswered questions and "what if's" hanging over Blake Street right now.

Let's talk about the 800-pound gorilla in the room that is the Matt Holliday exit. His on the field presence will be missed but what I think hurts the club more is his clubhouse leadership. Who will step up and be the voice of this team? There are many contenders: Atkins, Tulo, and of course Todd Helton who in the past has been the on again, off again leader. Time will tell who steps up; whoever it is has big shoes to fill.

The pitching staff is always a point of frustration in Denver. This year that area seems to have at least some positive momentum. With the addition of Jason Marquis, the rotation seems to be solid one though four with the exception of some shoulder problems that may hinder Jeff Francis (who is still questionable for opening day). Aaron Cook appears to be healthy and is coming off the best season of his career.

The questions in the rotation come with the younger talent. Namely Ubaldo Jimenez and Franklin Morales. More so for Morales after his complete self-destruction in 2008.

He has a great arm in that a lefty that can hurl in the mid-90 range is a special thing; the problem for Morales is accuracy. Morales has had a good winter and he could end up being number five. Morales will compete with Greg Smith, Jason Hirsh, and Jorge De La Rosa all spring for that spot.

Ubaldo Jimenez has to still prove that he can be consistent over the entire season. He is lights-out most of the time, but seems to break down on occasion. If the Rox are going to contend for the NL West Ubaldo has to emerge as a star.

With Todd Helton appearing to be near playing shape that puts Garrett Atkins back at third where he is most comfortable. Atkins should be the guy that has the break out year; the opportunity is right for him to dominate and he has shown consistent improvement.

One key addition the Rockies made was Don Baylor as the team's hitting coach. Baylor should really have an impact on players like Atkins and Troy Tulowitzki, who had an abysmal year at the plate hitting .263. If the Rockies are going to be in the mix, Tulo has to shake off last year and swing for the fences.

Overall the Rockies have the opportunity to make it to the postseason, maybe even deep into the postseason.

Pieces need to fall in place and the team needs to show the desire to win from day one—not at the All-Star break.

Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups: Nuggets Get the Better Deal

The King of Park Hill is coming home. For those of you not familiar with the Denver area, Park Hill is the neighborhood in which Chauncey Billups grew up. Billups is the area's most famous former resident.

At first blush it looks as though the Nuggets made out like bandits. Allen Iverson is a great player but just never really fit in here, both on and off the court.

This deal brings a great deal of leadership and experience to the Nuggets. This has been an obvious hole in the team's plans to make a legitimate playoff run.

Both Billups and Antonio McDyess have good history in Denver and look to shore up the Nuggets' approach to things, giving them true talent at the point. This has been missing for a while, as well as a strong work horse off the bench from McDyess.

From the start it appeared that there wasn't enough room for both Iverson and Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony. This deal will hopefully bring some calm to Anthony's off-court issues by having guys like Billups and McDyess in the locker room.

The trade also frees up some cash. Unloading Iverson's $21 million salary should save the Nuggets around $20 million next year.

In addition the Nuggets also got 7'1" center Cheikh Samb who has yet to play this year but is said to be a monster shot blocker.

All in all, it looks as though the Nuggets made a step in the right direction, and only time will tell who got the better end of the deal.

Allen Iverson Traded to Motown for Two Denver Heroes

The Denver Nuggets are reportedly going to trade PG Allen Iverson for former George Washington High School standout PG Chauncey Billups and former Nugget F Antonio McDyess.

Iverson is in the final year of his contract and is due $21 million. This deal brings home two former All-Stars with a history in this town.

Billups attended G.W. High School and took the Colorado Buffaloes to the NCAA Tournament. He also spent two seasons with the Nuggets before going to Toronto in the expansion draft. He brings good character, strong work ethic, and NBA Championship experience that should bolster the Nuggets roster.

McDyess spent six years with the Nuggets and was a fan favorite.

The deal will also bring over Cheik Samb, the 7'1" center from Senegal who hasn't seen a minute of playing time this year.

Is It Time for Mike Shanahan To Call It Good in Denver?

Mike Shanahan is in his 14th season with the Denver Broncos, and I believe it should be his last. Now, with that said, all of the Broncos fans who just blew steam from their ears, do me a favor and take off the Orange and Blue colored glasses.

If you look at this objectively, you may agree that his time in Denver has come. I am not saying the Broncos should fire him, we know that will never happen according to Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who has publicly said Shanahan can stay as long as he wants to.

Let's talk about why this may the best move for Mike and the Broncos' organization. Shanahan took over as coach in 1995. At that point, the Broncos were at the doorstep of winning a title. Shanahan completed the puzzle and his offensive genius helped them win back-to-back World Titles. Then, the Broncos gave him the title of Executive Vice President of Football operations, and I submit to you that is when it started to go south.

Since that point, the Broncos have had one meaningful playoff run and a cast of reject draft picks and free agents who have come and gone. Shanahan has proven his inability to make solid and sound personnel decisions.

Mike Shanahan is an excellent football coach; he has one of the greatest records in history, posting 149 career wins (17th all-time). I know his stats are impressive, which is what makes this hard to say. But the NFL is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world, and 10 years is a long time to not even sniff the Super Bowl.

In the past, there have been many coaches who saw the light and moved on. Bill Walsh and Joe Gibbs are great examples. And who's not to say that Mike couldn't come back at some point, but for now I think it would benefit the organization if he were to bow out gracefully.

Then the question would be, whom do you replace him with? There are a few candidates that would come to mind: Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren, or maybe even Brian Billick, who knows.

I am not saying I have the answer as to who would fill the spot, but it has gotten stale here in Denver and something needs to change.

John Daly: Everyone's Favorite Touring Pro

Well he is at it again, this time it may be his best work ever. After being asked not to return to his man cave on wheels, he proceeded to drink himself stupid at the local Hooters.

That isn't even the best part, Johnny boy was passed out cold right there at the table when the paramedics and police showed up.

You can't write this stuff! Man this has to be the 10th or 12th time John has been in trouble for partying like a rock star while touring around the country and "playing golf."

The two time major champion has played in several tournaments over the past couple of years under sponsorship exemptions. Huh I wonder why?

Now that Hooters is into John pretty big for all of this free pub, maybe we will see him in a tourney next season sporting the little orange shorts and Hooters issued Tank.

Oh and back to the bus situation, apparently John is afraid to fly so he travels to and fro in a vehicle that makes the Madden Mobile look like an eight year old girls doll house.

It comes complete with a keg, over 100 inches of television, and a built in barbecue.

One question, how on earth do you kicked off of your own tour bus? Something went very wrong there.

Well John I have to say I admire your ability to not give a damn!

Here's to Marlboro Mediums, Hooters, and "golfing your own damn way."

A Fan's Guide to Losing the World Series after a Cinderella Run

Rays fans, I know your pain.

Today, the Tampa/St. Petersburg area is probably having what feels like a very bad hangover. That feeling will go away in about a week and half, and the key to making it go away is looking to the future!

The grow-your-own talent model has shown a resurgence as of late. The 2007 Colorado Rockies scorched through the end of the regular season and swept their way to the Fall Classic, only to be blanked by the Boston Red Sox.

Following the sweep, the state of Colorado went into an immediate depression. While it only lasted about eight days those were the most painful eight days in Colorado sports history in a long time.

Once Christmas rolled around the outlook for the Rockies' 2008 campaign was great. Season ticket sales were on the rise, Rockies merchandise wasn't 95 percent off at every sporting goods stores as it had been for the past 10 years. Things were looking up.

Opening day arrived and the only way you could get a ticket was to pay ridiculous money. The anticipation for the season to start was about the same as the Rockies' inaugural year.

Then the Rockies fell on their face, making it clear that they were either saving all of their wins for the end of the season like 2007 or it would be over by the All Star break.

I guess you can't really blame anyone for the Rockies falling apart this year. Injuries plagued the club all season long, and it's a bit harder for those to perform for those young guys.

So I guess in closing everything will be alright in Rays country. Opening day will be awesome, you get to watch the American League Championship pennant be pasted to the outfield wall, and the possibility of a repeat will keep you on the edge of your seats.

I know it seems hard to swallow right now, but it was a great year for baseball in Tampa.

The fans and organization showed class through the entire run. My hat is off to the Rays and Rays fans everywhere.

Rockies Rumor Mill: Willie Randolph in Purple Pinstripes?

There is a flurry of activity here in Denver these days, and it's not about the World Series. The Colorado Rockies have expressed interest in having former Mets skipper Willie Randolph join the staff as bench coach.

Randolph was in the hunt for the Brewers' vacancy, but it looks as though Ken Macha has that all but wrapped up.

Look for Randolph and the Rockies to put something together next week. This move would bring great experience and a big name to the Rockies' coaching staff for sure.

Randolph went 302-253—a .544 winning percentage—in his time with the Mets.

Holliday Hubbub

Also, rumors are flying around Matt Holliday and Garrett Atkins. Holliday's name is being mentioned from Anaheim to the Bronx, with talks of him going for a list of pitchers capable of fitting into that No. 2 spot the Rockies are looking for.

Atkins name is also being shot around with rumors of Minnesota and the Phillies coming up most often.

So far, nothing is concrete, but look for a deal to go down with Holliday and/or Atkins around the GM meetings next week.

Rox Talk Volume II: The Offseason, Weeks Four Through Eight

In this volume of Rox Talk, I will go over two things: Rockies ownership (95 percent) and Rockies current events (5 percent).

Let's start at the top, Dick Monfort. Mr.Monfort has made it very clear that the key to his heart lies in the wallets of the faithful Rockies fans that fill, or partially fill, Coors Field on a regular basis. We can do the math Mr. Monfort; four tickets at $35.00, six beers at $7.00, four hot dogs at $6.00, and a couple of souvenirs later and we need a home-equity loan to go to the game, and you are laughing all the way to the bank.

I am not suggesting that Coors is the only ballpark in America were you need a six-figure salary for your family to enjoy the game, but give me a break. This is the year that Monfort needs to pony up.

It is time that Rockies fans stand up against him once and for all. I mean come on, this is the only organization in which the fans must prove to the owners that they deserve a good product on the field.

Yes, I know the model worked in 2007 with the series run; however, with eight consecutive "rebuilding" years, they were bound to build the nucleus needed to win. The Rockies have that core in place. Now it is up to Mr. Monfort to throw down the cash and prove to the Rockies' fans that he wants to win every year, not just once every 15 years.

OK, now onto the team itself. Of course the 800-pound gorilla in the room is Luis Vizcaino with his newfound relationship with the long arm of the law. That two-year, $7.5 million deal the Rox inked him to is starting to sting a bit. With the trouble he is in, will he play the impact role that the coaching staff and that kind of money demands?

We will have to wait and see.

As for the rest of the bullpen, things are a bit up in the air. Perennial All Star Brian Fuentes could be on his way out due to the high salary he will carry. So that leaves the mildly tested Taylor Buchholz and Manny Corpas, who, at times last season, looked like he forgot how to throw a ball over the plate. It will be a fun battle to watch, that is for sure.

That is the latest version of Rox Talk. I will hit some other topics as we go. If you want to chat a bit, please feel free to shoot me a line.

Rockies Pitcher Luis Vizcaino Charged With DUI

Colorado Rockies Pitcher Luis Vizcaino was arrested early Monday morning in Tampa, Florida. Vizcaino was stopped by police for driving 71 in a 45 miles per hour zone. Police said they noticed the smell of alcohol.

The 34-year-old Tampa native had a blood alcohol level just beyond the legal limit and was released on bail before noon Monday.

The Rockies released the following statement in regards to the situation:

"Our organization was extremely disappointed to learn of the arrest of Luis Vizcaino for allegedly driving under the influence early Monday in Florida. We are continuing to monitor the situation and have been in contact with Luis and his representatives. We understand that they are working through the issues with local authorities and that Luis clearly understands the seriousness of the situation."

Vizcaino went 1-2 with a 5.28 earned run average in 43 games for Colorado last season.

Now is the Time to Get Hot: Phillies On The Brink!

While the entire baseball universe including myself, had the Tampa Bay Rays hoisting the hardware at the end of the World Series, the Philadelphia Phillies have stopped that notion in its tracks.

What happened to the Rays? They went from knocking off the defending world champs to daydreaming of upcoming tee-times before our very eyes. Worst yet, they get to face the unstoppable force that is Cole Hamels in game five.

Hamels, while not having total control of his fastball in game one, showed dominance with the rest of his arsenal. He has a stellar 4-0 record in the postseason and the Phillies' bats have caught fire, including that of one Mr. Ryan Howard, who waited for the perfect time to go on a hot streak, hitting three home runs in the past two games.

The Phillies lineup is swinging big from top to bottom, including a home run shot from Pitcher Joe Blanton. When your pitcher goes yard in the World Series, you know it's a good day.

I know it is stating the obvious but in order to win a world title in any sport, you have to get hot at the right time.

While the Rays put together a magical run, the Phillies appear to be the better team here and should wrap this thing up tonight.
