Here Come the Mighty Chicago Blackhawks?

"Here come the 'Hawks!" was the song I was reciting earlier this week. But, now its more to the tune of "Love or Confusion" by Jimi Hendrix. I never listen to him, but that's the best thing I could think of when I Googled my situation.

The Chicago Blackhawks are coming off an abysmal hockey match against the Vancouver Canucks.

Antti Niemi earned the nod from Coach Quenneville on Wednesday (Oct. 21) night. Although he put up an impressing performance, it was no match for the Canucks' shooting line and the 'Hawks sloppy play in front of the net.

Not to mention, the excessive amount of penalties dished out by Chicago. That is something that was an off-and-on concern last year, and needs to be limited this year. I'm sure Coach Q will get on his high horse during practice to alleviate this problem. And, I wouldn't be surprised if he sits a player down the road if this issue continues. But, let's hope he doesn't go there.

During the first period on Wednesday night I couldn't of been happier. The game was going great. Chicago was moving the puck with soft hands, Duncan Keith had a sick slap-shot from the point, and Niemi was keeping the puck out of the net. But, that all went down hill when the Canucks equalized on a Chicago penalty.

The game drastically shifted gears. I haven't seen a more unbalanced start to end in awhile. I was quite disappointed.

Jonathan Toews took a major lick from Willie Mitchell in the third period and missed the remainder of the game. That did nothing for the 'Hawks penalty kill. Toews statistically has the best face-off percentage and is a major force in the PK.

Both Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook (upper-body injuries) missed practice, and are questionable for play.

Another thing of concern that Coach Q is known for emphasizing during a hockey game is the team that wins the five-on-three advantage during a penalty will most likely win the rest of the game. And, that was fact when the Canucks successfully stopped a two-man advantage for Chicago. Nobody knows what could've come of the 'Hawks if they would've scored.

The main thing for the 'Hawks next game is simply to limit the penalties.

The first place 'Hawks will take on the last place Nashville Predators tomorrow (Oct. 24) night at the United Center at 7:30 PM CT. The game will be broadcasted on WGN in the Chicagoland area, which is very unfortunate for me, since I live in Normal, IL (I attend Illinois State University).

My cable provider only offers WGN America, so no Blackhawks game. And, we don't get Versus either (the game on Monday). I may stream WGN radio online, but have not yet decided.

Cristobal Huet will take to the pipes tomorrow night. A move that Coach Q couldn't really avoid. Huet is still the No. 1, and he still deserves a quality chance. While I think Niemi is a prospective start, I still believe that Huet has something to prove. A win for him will really help out his morale and boost the team's confidence.

And, the Blackhawks will again be mighty.

Chicago's Pastime: Baseball

The year was 1870. And, only one team existed in the great city of Chicago: The Chicago White Stockings.

Today, those teams are separated by: the loop, Soldier Field, the Sears Tower, and all the tussle of the “Windy City.”

If you don’t know the names of those two teams you are in fact an alien. With that being said, the two mighty ball clubs of Chi-Town are: the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox.

When I was really small (I’m talking like one or two years of age), I was apparently forced to be a White Sox fan. My mom and dad would dress me in black and white threads with the words: “Chicago White Sox” printed on the forefront. I will burn any of those pictures. To this day, my entire immediate family (mom, dad, brother) are all loyal to the Black and White. Myself, however, am extremely, almost obsessively (correction: literally obsessively) loyal to the Red, White and Blue. Not just the American flag, but in fact the Cubbies. Yup, those “Lovable Losers,” “The Boys in Blue,” “The North Siders.” Truth be told, I bleed the color blue.

How did this happen, you ask?

Honestly, I do not exactly know. I guess I’m just that much smarter. Kidding… nothing against Sox fans. As long as you’re not a Cardinals fan. Then, we have problems. But, overall, anyone who is a fan of the American Pastime is a friend of mine.

Getting back to me becoming a Cubs fan, and how my family affected that.

It all started in 1992, when I was roughly three years old (I don’t know the exact date; I would have to dig through my things under my bed to find the ticket). I believe it was the first time I had ever been on the “El” train in Chicago. My dad, uncle, and I all headed to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. Obviously, I do not remember who any of the players were or what team we were playing, but I do remember that horrid “El” ride and a faint picture of a 1992’ Friendly Confines. At that time, I was so short my face was at butt-level with all the other folks on the “El” train, maybe that’s what kept the memory in mind, the fact that I was enveloped with asses. Or, maybe it’s the atmosphere and beauty of Wrigley Field; the true reason Cubs fans exist. That ballpark will always be a symbol of what it means to be Cubs fan. It’s a way of life. It makes Chicago the great city it is. Wow, I love the Chicago Cubs.

Sure, it’s been 101 years since the “North Siders” won the World Series, but once that drought is cured, it will be the best win in sports history. Maybe it’ll be this year, maybe it’ll be next year, nobody knows, but we do know it will happen. And, when it does, I’ll be there (or watching on TV, depending on my financial status at the time).

So, why does Chicago have two ball clubs? Maybe due to the large population of the city and the surroundings areas. Or, maybe because it separates two different people: those who yell “CUBS SUCK!” and those who shout “SOX SUCK!”

But, in the end, we have one thing in common, we both cheer for a team that exists in the greatest city on Earth: Chicago!

This Sunday No Good for the Chicago Blackhawks and Illinois State Redbirds

The Chicago Blackhawks (36-19-9) fell to the last place Colorado Avalanche (29-36-1) today, by a score of 5-1 (worst home loss of the season), in front of a Chicago crowd at the United Center earlier today.

The win snapped Colorado's six-game losing streak, while the 'Hawks have now lost two in a row. Not to mention, Blackhawks' star winger Martin Havlat left the game in the second period with a lower body injury.

The 'Hawks can not afford losing too many games if they want home ice advantage in the playoffs. Which should prove crucial for this Chicago hockey team.

For more on the 'Hawks-Avs game click here.

Next On: The 'Hawks will face-off against the Carolina Hurricanes (35-27-5) on Wednesday, Mar. 11 at 7:30 PM CT. Coverage in the Chicagoland area will be provided by Comcast SportsNet.

The Illinois State Redbirds played the Northern Iowa Panthers in a nationally broadcasted game on CBS today, in which the winner gets an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The 'Birds fell to the Panthers by a score of 60-57 in overtime play. The Panthers have now successfully defeated the 'Birds in three straight games this season.

ISU will need a ton of luck to get into the tournament on Selection Sunday, Mar. 15 at 5:00 PM CT. Coverage will be provided by CBS.
Illinois State-Northern Iowa: Redbirds Fall In Double Overtime

The Redbird Arena was packed tonight, about 8,000-some filled the crowd to make one epic night of ISU basketball.

Unfortunately, the 'Birds were not able to hang on to the lead when it came crunch time.

ISU fell to the Northern Iowa Panthers tonight by a score of 67-69 in a double OT extravaganza, after a referee review of the Panther's buzzer-beating final shot, which after a few minutes concluded good. It was most upsetting.

This game was very imperative to both teams. A win by ISU would mean the Missouri Valley Conference has a three-way tie between: Creighton, Northern Iowa, and Illinois State.

However, that was not the case. And, the Panthers still remain tied with Creighton by a conference record of 13-4. ISU falls 11-6 in the conference, remaining one game behind.

Player of the Game for ISU: Forward Brandon Sampay had 19 points

Next On: The Illinois State Redbirds will take on the nine-game winning streak Creighton Bluejays, Saturday, Feb. 28. The game will be televised on ESPN 2, coverage begins at 1:00 PM CT.

If the Redbirds fall to the Bluejays, and the Panthers lose to the Evansville Aces (conf. 7-9) Saturday night, the Creighton Bluejays will be the MVC Champions.

The Chicago Cubs Have Many Unanswered "Q's" Heading Down to The Desert

Here we go, my first Chicago Cubs' article of the 2009 season! I cannot wait for April 6th! Hopefully, all of these articles will be positive during this journey towards October.

Today (Friday, Feb. 13, 2009) marked the first day of Spring Training practice for the Cubs down in the desert. Good thing I don't believe in superstition, because some believe Friday the 13th is unlucky.

As the Cubs head down to Fitch Park in Mesa, Arizona for practice, many questions are still unanswered.

Who will leadoff in the batting order? Theriot, Soriano, or Miles?

What will the batting order be?

Who is going to be the closer? Marmol or Gregg?

Who will be heavy contenders in the NL Central?

Who will be the fifth starter? Marshall or Samardzija?

Experts from a wide range of sources say that Alfonso Soriano will still leadoff.

In my opinion, it should be Ryan Theriot. Last year, "The Riot" had a .307 batting average and a .387 on-base-percentage, while Soriano had a .280 BA and a .344 OBP.

Not only do those numbers favor Theriot, but Soriano had 37 more RBIs and 28 more home runs in 2008 compared to Theriot. Not to mention, Soriano went 0-2 almost every other at-bat in 2008 as leadoff. And, don't worry, Theriot has decent speed—he stole 22 bases last year while Soriano only stole 19.

Even with Soriano's injury, he should had more towards the end of the season. The only thing that worries me is the fact that Soriano has always been a leadoff man. I think Sweet Lou and his staff should at least try out Ryan Theriot at leadoff and see what happens. In addition to, newly acquired Aaron Miles may fit this role, but I think he should stick to the No. 2 spot in the batting order.

Another subject that will be addressed in the desert is the 3-4-5 in the batting order. Will Derrek Lee still be the Cubs' No. 3, or will it be the "board game brand" player, Milton Bradley? In my opinion, they should leave it as is, Lee and Ramirez, and then slide down Soto to fit in Bradley in the No. 5 spot. I don't want the Lee-Ramirez chemistry to go out of whack. I like them back-to-back.

With the sad departure of fan favorite, Kerry Wood, comes the question of—who will be the new closer in 2009? It could very well be ex-Marlin Kevin Gregg, or the highly praised prospect, Dominican Republic native, Carlos Marmol.

I kind of hope that Gregg will get the job, but I have a feeling that Marmol will. In my opinion, Marmol would be a better 6th, 7th, and/or 8th inning relief pitcher. Marmol would be utilized better as a set-up man, while Gregg has the experience needed to be a great closer.

The St. Louis Cardinals will be a main threast as usually, but Chicago should also look out for the Cincinatti Reds and the Houston Astros. I have a feeling that the Milwaukee Brewers will not do as good with the departure of C.C. Sabathia and Ben Sheets.

Sean Marshall will win the position over Jeff Samardzija. That is the one thing I am most certain about while dealing with these topics. Marshall has been used as a starter in the past, and he deserves the position. However, if Lou and his staff for some reason put "the big man from Notre Dame" as the fifth starter, I would have no problem with that.

All of these unanswered questions will most certainly make an interesting Spring Training for the Chicago Cubs. Coming off a devastating postseason last year, and more than 100 years of no championships, the Cubs need to step it up and prove themselves worthy of the World Series.

This could be the year!

GO CUBS!

The 10 Best Extreme Athletes To Play in the X-Games

According to Encarta® World English Dictionary, an "extreme sport" is "a sport considered more dangerous and thrilling than ordinary sports and often involving hazardous airborne stunts and tricks. Extreme sports include skateboarding, snowboarding, in-line skating, skysurfing, wakeboarding, and stunt bicycling."

A prime example of extreme sports take place annually at the Winter and Summer X-Games.

Being a former skateboarder myself (note: I was not at all good), I respect the X-Games. I watch them annual on ESPN. I hope to one day attend an event.

Since 1995, extreme athletes from all over the world have competed in the annual Winter and Summer X-Games.

X-Game viewers have seen it all, from skateboard legend Tony Hawk's 900 in the half-pipe to motocross great Travis Pastrana's double backflip on a huge mound of dirt.

The X-Games have been increasingly growing ever since the first year in Rhode Island and Vermont. The ratings, attendance, participants, publicity have all sky rocketed since the first games.

Like the Olympics, the X-Games involve bronze, silver, and gold medal system. Also, many valuable prizes are available for contestants to win.

Since the beginning of the games, numerous participants have flew in the air or did a grind on a rail.

With the recent conclusion of the 2009 Winter X-Games XIII, let's take a look a the greatest extreme athletes since 1995.
Begin Slideshow

Blackhawks-Oilers: Chicago Continues the Road-Trip, Begins the Canada Trip

The Chicago Blackhawks (28-13-8) may not be undefeated during the entire season, but after beating the Edmonton Oilers (25-22-3) by a score of 3-1, the 'Hawks continue their perfect record of 10-0-0 against teams in Canada this season.

The start of tonight's game had a promising start. The 'Hawks were handling the puck well out of the shoot, and it seemed as though the face-offs were slightly better. Each team actually ended up winning half of their face-offs at the end of the game.

First Period

The Oilers would draw first blood. Right after a Walker-Stortini scrap, Ethan Moreau was able to find a loose puck to put in the net for the first tally of the night. Moreau actually elevated the puck, bouncing off Brian Campbell's face then redirecting off the back of Cristobal Huet's helmet and into the goal. The former Blackhawk had his 12th goal of the year.

Troy Brouwer had multiple opportunities throughout the game starting in the first period, but was never able to execute.

Dustin Byfuglien had some big hits during the first. As well as, James Wisniewski and Cam Barker. It was great to see Big Buff, the Wiz, and Cammy getting more involved in the physicality aspect of the sport. Something that the 'Hawks still need to improve on this year and beyond.

The 'Hawks did a great job putting the puck on net. Another thing that I have strived for this year. The more chances means the more goals.

Also, Chicago's penalty kill unit did a great job on a Patrick Kane tripping call.

Chicago's defense was not the greatest in the first. The Oilers had many opportunities, but luckily for the "D," Huet was having a good night. Huet had 20 saves by the last horn.

Second Period

Cam Barker was the first to score for Chicago on a Power Play goal. Barker executed an excellent pass to Brian Campbell, then Campbell set-up Barker at the point for a great slap-shot that had Oiler goalie Dwayne Roloson on his toes. With the help from a Jonathan Toews screen, the puck easily found the back of the net. This put Barker's 27 game slump of no goals to an end. Barker tallied his fourth goal of the year.

The man from France, Cristobal Huet, had some great saves during the second, making sure that the Oilers did not finish any of their great opportunities.

At one point in the second, the 'Hawks were out shooting the Oilers by a mark of 36-9.

David Bolland slapped a goal in from the defense-man position right after a feed from Matt Walker going to the inboards to keep the play alive. Bolland is now in the double digits with 10 goals on the year. Marty Havlat and Matt Walker picked up the assists.

Throughout the entire second period, the 'Hawks did a great job keeping the puck in the Oiler's zone allowing Chicago to at one point out shoot them 30-13.

Third Period

The 'Hawks played great hockey in the third. Roloson was the only Oiler doing good, keeping Edmonton in the game at this point.

Defense-man Lubomir Visnovski went out with an injury after delivering a check into the boards.

Marty Havlat would tally the final goal for the 'Hawks with a wrap around deflecting off of Roloson's stick. That gave Havlat his 16th of the season. Wiz and Bolland picked up the assists.

The 'Hawks continued to control the puck with true passion while passing the puck quite well.

The Good

The 'Hawks out shot the Oilers 41-21.

The 'Hawks allowed a Power Play goal in seven straight games prior to tonight. That slump has ended.

Huet is now 9-4 in his last 13 decisions.

Player to Watch

Patrick Kane continues to struggle. Kane has only one goal and two assists since returning from injury. Hopefully, that can change soon.

Player of the Game

Dave Bolland (one goal, one assist)

Next On

The 'Hawks will continue their Canadian road-trip to Calgary, Alberta, Canada where they will take on Western Conference's third place Calgary Flames (30-16-4). The puck will drop Thursday, Feb. 5 at 8:30 PM CT.

Look for Nikolai Khabibulin, who has won two straight games, to start Thursday night.

Blackhawks-Sharks: Chicago Ends the Cali Trip with a Big Win

What do you do when you're sick on a Saturday night during the college life? Perhaps watch movies, TV, or read a book?

Well, luckily for me, I got to catch the Chicago Blackhawks (26-13-8) drown the first place San Jose Sharks (36-6-5) on Comcast SportsNet by a score of 4-2.

This was the first win the 'Hawks tallied at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA since Mar. 17, 2003. The Shark Tank was no friend to the 'Hawks in nearly six years.

Jonathan Toews and the 'Hawks were the first to score early at the :48 mark in first period that ended Evgeni Nabokov's franchise record scoreless streak. Andrew Ladd and Brian Campbell provided the assists.

The Sharks answered back by providing a Christian Ehrhoff goal in the first period.

Kris Versteeg saw the ice for the first time tonight since before the All-Star break. Versteeg gave the 'Hawks a go-ahead goal in the second period. Centerman David Bolland was tripped up during a short-handed Blackhawks' break-away.

Versteeg was able to corral the puck and provide the much needed goal for a still Calder Cup contender for Chicago. Also, Rookie Versteeg was placed on the second line tonight as a center. Apparently this was a morale boost that helped him overcome his scoring drought.

The next goal was also scored by No. 19, Jonathan Toews in the second and was his 16th of the season. An incredible Patrick Kane pass allowed Toews to set-up right next to the net in order to execute a brilliant game-winning wrist shot. The Captain has been hot as of late.

The third period brought the final goal for the 'Hawks. Duncan Keith shot a laser beam during a Chicago power play.

Milan Michalek had the last for the Sharks and for the entire game. The Sharks were able to win a face-off while catching the 'Hawks in a quick change allowed them to pas the puck in Michalek's path. Milan then continued to get off a great back-hand wrister over Nikolai Khabibulin's shoulder.

The Sharks were within two goals again.

Even with a Shark power play and extra attacker, the 'Hawks were able to hold on and beat the Sharks on the road.

Khabibulin made 33 saves for his second straight win.

The Good

Keith has looked good in his return from injury thus far. Besides scoring a goal in tonight's game, Keith showed off some stunning defensive skills. It's great to see that No. 2 back on the ice again; yet another reason he wears that "A" on his chest.

The Okay

The 'Hawks started off the game with horrendous face-off skills by losing 12-of-14 on the dot. However, the 'Hawks were able to improve that category by ending the game with 16 face-off wins. Even Adam Burish saw a face-off win at some point.

The power play was alright tonight. The 'Hawks did have a power play and short-handed goal, but they looked awful in some attempts. Maybe it's the line arrangement or maybe it's bad luck, but this is one category the 'Hawks have not done well as of late.

They must be able to do more on the power play if they want to win in the playoffs this year.

The Bad

Along the lines of power plays comes penalties. The 'Hawks had four penalties, one was a Dustin Byfuglien four minute minor. The 'Hawks have allowed too many penalties in general this year. I hope Coach Joel Quenneville can help that again.

One word: inconsistent. Chicago went from losing to the 12th placed L.A. Kings to beating the first placed S.J. Sharks. What's up with that? Let's hope that doesn't continue.

Three Stars of the Game

No. 19, Jonathan Toews (2 goals)

No. 2, Duncan Keith (1 goal)

No. 32, Kris Versteeg (1 goal, 1 assist)

Craig's Fourth Star of the Game

No. 36, David Bolland who had one assist and went +2 tonight. In my opinion, Bolland should be awarded the center spot on the second line. He has played some impressive hockey.

Next On

The Blackhawks will be heading to Las Vegas to relax and watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 1.

After their quick break, the Blackhawks will be back on the road towards Edmonton, Alberta, Canada this Tuesday, Feb. 3 to take on the Edmonton Oilers (25-20-3). The Oilers will be no easy contest. This Edmonton hockey team has gone 6-2-0 in the last eight games while standing sixth in the Western Conference standings.

The Blackhawks-Oilers' game will begin at 8:00 PM CT, and be televised on CSN in the Chicagoland area. Coverage will be provided in Canada on PPV.

Blackhawks-Ducks: 'Bulin Wall Stands Tall in Anaheim, Defeats "Not-So Mighty"

The Chicago Blackhawks (26-12-8) started off the second-longest road trip in franchise history last night against the Anaheim Ducks (24-22-5).

They came out with a well-deserved 3-2 victory.

The 'Hawks will play eight-straight road games, beginning in California and ending in Missouri.

It's the longest road trip on the entire NHL schedule.

With both Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews scoring in the All-Star game over the weekend, it seemed to help the 'Hawks a lot more than I thought. I was worried that with Kane's ankle, it would have a negative effect on his play. That was not the story.

Adam Burish began the game with a garbage goal on a Brian Campbell slapshot. It was a great thing to see Burish scoring a goal after coming off a recently injury.

Patrick Kane also had somewhat of a garbage goal in the first period as well. Anaheim goalie, Jonas Hiller, seemed to drop his stick after a teammate ran into him, and Kane took full advantage by putting the puck in a pretty much empty netter.

Jonathan Toews scored the final goal for Chicago in the second period. After a great save my Nikolai Khabibulin, Patrick Sharp moved the puck to Duncan Keith on a great pass. That allowed Keith to set-up Toews with a great goal.

It was great seeing former '07-08 All-Star Duncan Keith playing defense again. He is such an essential asset to the entire team and the pairing of Keith and Seabrook is one of the best in the league. They made sure that the Ducks' star players didn't get too many shots on goal.

Even if the Ducks did get those shots on goal, Nikolai "'Bulin Wall" Khabibulin was there to shut them out. Khabi had some very impressive saves, while only allowing two of 38 shots to pass him. He moved very well along the paint and seemed to be very alert in the game. I was quite pleased with his play last night.

Room for improvement comes with every game, and the 'Hawks are no exception to that. During the game last night I was not at all happy with the penalty kill. They need to work on dumping the puck right away no matter what the circumstances are.

Also, a "Too Many Men on the Ice" penalty is unacceptable. Not to mention they almost had a second one that the referees did not catch.

I hope Rookie Kris Versteeg can return soon from his finger injury. He brings great excitement to the game that I miss.

The next contest will be in Los Angeles against the Kings (19-20-7). However, do not be fooled by the losing record. The Kings have gone 5-0-3 in their last eight games. In professional sports, anyone can win.

Cristobal Huet will most likely return tomorrow night at 9:30 PM CT, given Coach Quenneville's goalie rotation.

Key to the Chicago Blackhawks' Success: The All-Star Break

The Chicago Blackhawks (25-12-8) were shut out by the St. Louis Blues (19-23-4) on Wednesday, Jan. 23 by a score of 2-0. The loss was devastating, especially since they were at the Friendly Confines of the United Center.

The 'Hawks hold the fourth spot in the Western Conference with 58 points, while the Blues place 15th with only 42 points. Not to mention, I was disappointed in the Tony Amonte "ceremony." It consisted of him smiling, waving, and dropping the first puck. Almost as lame as the first ceremonial pitch in baseball.

The 'Hawks need to make some adjustments if they want to continue their superb play after the All-Star break.

Let me break down my thoughts.

Tips for Joel and Co.

1. Short and simple, stay healthy. Patrick Kane has been nursing an ankle injury, and should keep off it much as possible during the break. Hopefully, the All-Star game doesn't do any harm.

Recently, the last game vs. the Blues, Kris Versteeg suffered a hand injury in the second period. Hopefully it is not too serious, and no word as if he will play in the YoungStars game Saturday or not as of yet.

Not to mention, Brent Sopel is still on the Injured Reserve, and Duncan Keith is still on the bench. As a devoted Chicago (Cubs) fan I am familiar to the "injury effect" on sports. Let's not have this happen to the brilliant 'Hawks.

2. Stick with the hot goalie stick. As of late, Cristobal Huet has been very impressive. He has almost matched the "No. 1" goaltender: Nikolai Khabibulin, in the statistics and between the pipes.

Huet has a record of 12-8, while Khabibulin is 13-4. The only stat that Huet stands stronger against is the GAA by .07, Huet stands at 2.30 and Khabibulin at 2.37. This makes me feel a lot more comfortable in the long run if Khabibulin is to leave the team, and Huet takes over full-time.

3. Score some more goals. I don't know the exact numbers, but as of late the 'Hawks have not put up as many goals as they did earlier in the season. I remember all those three-plus, five-plus, and even six-plus goal games. Where have they gone? We need goals to contend in the playoffs.

4. Believe. We need to have faith in our Chicago hockey team. I know I do. The 'Hawks have not won a Stanley Cup in awhile, 47 seasons to be exact. With the youngest team in the NHL, the 'Hawks have shown inconsistency as of late. It happens in all sports. It's a cold-streak type situation. I believe the All-Star break can turn that around.

5. Beat divisional rivals; Blues and Red Wings. The 'Hawks have lost all four games against the Wings, and have not played well with the Lou either. That needs to turn around. Especially, since the next two games against the Wings come close to the end of the season, which could prove valuable for the Blackhawks' playoff picture.

If some, most, or any of these five improvements can be made, the 'Hawks will be able to enter the playoff picture in this 2008-2009 season. A feat they have not made since 2002.

Who knows? Maybe this could be the year!

GO 'HAWKS!

Also, make sure to watch the All-Star game on Versus, Sunday, Jan. 25 at 5:00 CT, and GO WESTERN CONFERENCE!

Chicago Sports: Blackhawks & Bears, Vol. 3

Chicago Blackhawks

I couldn't be happier leaving the United Center on Wednesday night for multiple reasons.

But for the sake of order, let's begin with the start of my night.

We arrived at the game five minutes in due to the horrific traffic traveling inbound on the Eisenhower Expressway in Chicago, IL. That was just enough time to see a Patrick Kane Power Play goal! We literally just sat down when the lamp lit up and the entire Blackhawk Nation of the "U.C." went crazy. It was a sight to see.

I have never seen that many people in the United Center at one time. The last 'Hawks game I attended was nearly two years ago (that's what college does to your budget). The games were never sold out like that Wednesday night.

That goal would remain alone until a Troy Brouwer empty netter near the end of the game.

The most impressive play of the game came from the "man from France": Cristobal Huet. He stopped 23 shots and earned his first shutout as a 'Hawk.

"[Huet] played great, and you can tell that he's getting more confident as the season goes on," said Patrick Kane. "It's good to have him get the shutout—he's played great the last couple of games."

So which goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin or Cristobal Huet, will take the net on Friday against the Colorado Avalanche (14-13-1)?

I guess it's up to Coach Quenneville to make that decision.

Personally, I want to see Khabi, but I wouldn't be surprised if Huet gets the nod after his great play during the absence of the 'Bulin Wall.

I also have to give it up to the 'Hawks penalty kill units. They faced a 4:00 minor and a 5-on-3 during the game while not allowing a single goal.

The Chicago Blackhawks (13-6-7) shut out the Ottawa Senators (10-11-5) by a score of 2-0.

Three Stars of the Game

No. 38 Cristobal Huet

No. 88 Patrick Kane

No. 8 Matt Walker

It's great to see the Frenchmen up there!

My Star of the Game (besides the aforementioned)

No. 10 Patrick Sharp

Sharp made a great pass to assist Kane's goal.

Side Notes

The 'Hawks sent defenseman James Wisniewski to the AHL's Rockford IceHogs on loan-term injury expectations. In addition, the 'Hawks sent left wing Pascal Pelletier back down to the IceHogs.

The next game will be on Friday, Dec. 12 at 8:00 PM CT. against the Colorado Avalanche (14-13-1) in the Pepsi Center. The last time the two teams faced off was on Nov. 3, when the 'Hawks won by a score of 6-2.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears (8-6) beat the New Orleans Saints (7-7) in OT by a score of 27-24.

This game started out in the Bears' favor. Daniel Manning returned the kickoff for an 83-yard touchdown to start the game.

Then Mike Brown made an interception during the first Saints' drive.

However, not all was well in the beginning for Chicago. Rookie running back Matt Forte limped to the sideline after suffering a toe injury during his first run.

Forte finished the game with 34 yards on the ground, 59 yards in the air, and he scored one touchdown.

Kyle Orton was 24-for-40, throwing for 172 yards and giving up two interceptions. He also had a six-yard rushing touchdown.

Robbie Gould kicked the tying field goal at the end of regulation and then made a 35-yarder in overtime to beat the Saints during Thursday Night Football.

Still, the bottom line remains: The Bears need plenty of help to make it into the postseason. The first place Minnesota Vikings (8-5) have to lose two games while the Bears win the rest.

Even then, will the Bears even make it past the first round of the playoffs?

Probably not.

But it's always fun to watch another Bears game after the regular season for whatever reason.

The next game will be featured on ESPN's Monday Night Football on Dec. 22 against the Green Bay Packers (5-8) at 7:30 PM CT—a must win for the Chicago Bears.

Blackhawks-Senators: Kris Versteeg Not in Lineup, Nikolai Khabibulin Could Be

The unexpected fight Sunday night between Kris Versteeg (Chicago Blackhawks) and Kyle Turris (Phoenix Coyotes) ended in an automatic one-game suspension for Versteeg.

That game will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 PM CT at the United Center in Chicago, IL.

The Chicago Blackhawks (12-6-7) will face-off against the Ottawa Senators (10-10-5).

The last time the 'Hawks played the Senators was last year on Dec. 22, the 'Hawks won 4-3.

The Senators have been struggling this season, but lately they have been victorious. Last Saturday, Dec. 6, the Senators beat the Pittsburgh Penguins (15-8-4) with a score of 3-2.

The 'Hawks have been hot as of late, going 2-0-1 in their last three contests with 15 goals.

Both teams could see goalies that have not played in a while. The 'Hawks sent backup goalie Corey Crawford back down to the Rockford IceHogs while the Senators could give Martin Gerber his first start in over a month.

Players to Watch

Nikolai Khabibulin: Since Corey Crawford has been sent back to Rockford, Khabi could earn the start over Cristobal Huet on Wednesday night. Khabi is 7-1-4, while Huet is 5-5-3.

Pascal Pelletier: While Adam Burish is placed on the Injured Reserves, and Kris Versteeg undergoes a one-day suspension. Pelletier should be in Wednesday night's lineup for the first time playing for the Blackhawks.

Prior to, Pelletier has only played six games in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, and it wasn't his best, his only stat was a -2. On the other hand, he does lead the Rockford IceHogs with 13 goals. Hopefully, he can contribute Wednesday night.

Jonathan Toews: He recorded six points in three games, including a pair of game-winning goals. As a result he was named NHL's Second Star of the Week. He also schooled the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, Dec. 6 with a sweet "deke" move to score a goal. Toews has been hot, and look for him to do something big again.

Keys of the Game

Neutral Zone Movement: The 'Hawks need to continue to move the puck within each zone, but also make sure the puck is not mishandled within the neutral zone. This will set up more breakaway opportunities.

Stop Dany Heatley: Heatley scored his 14th goal on Monday, Dec. 8.

The Patricks: Both Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp have been hot as usual. Sharp leads the team in goals (16), and Kane leads the team in assists (20) and points (32). Just give them the puck.

Prediction

5-3 'Hawks

Wednesday night I will attend my first 'Hawks game of the season at the "U.C." With money being tight, hopefully it will not be my last.

Let's Go Hawks!

Chicago Sports: Bears & Blackhawks, Vol. 2

Sunday was a great day for the world of sports in Chicago. The Bears were able to take control over the Jaguars, and the Blackhawks destroyed the Coyotes.

Let's take a look at the two teams in depth.

Chicago Bears

Matt Forte and the Chicago Bears (7-6) were able to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9) by a score of 23-10. The Bears were able to take control of the game early by scoring 20 points in the first half, something that they need to do more often.

The frigid temperature of Soldier Field was no match for the Bears' defense. The Bears' "D" had three sacks and one INT while only allowing one touchdown against the Jaguars.

Now, let's take a look at what the Bears did well, and what they can improve.

Done Well

Daniel Manning: Nickel back Manning was able to create momentum early for the Bears by running back a 42-yard interception.

The Tight Ends: Both Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark caught a touchdown pass Sunday afternoon.

First half Matt Forte: Rookie running back Forte ran for 54 of his 69 yards in the first half. He also had 37 receiving yards in the game.

Overall Defense: Better than it has been.

Needs Improvement

Devin Hester: Let's begin with the obvious. Hester has not yet returned a single punt or kickoff for touchdown this year. He has been put into the wideout spot more frequently but has not been a big factor. Even though he caught for 80 yards, he dropped a few good passes.

Urlacher, Briggs, Roach: It's simple: The three linebackers of the Bears should be making more plays.

The wideouts: The tight ends shouldn't be the only players making the big plays.

The next game will be featured on the NFL Network on Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7:15 PM CST. The Chicago Bears (7-6) will take on the New Orleans Saints (7-6). Both teams are trying to stay alive in the playoff hunt.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks (12-6-7) outplayed the Phoenix Coyotes (12-13-2) in every way possible Sunday night on Comcast SportsNet.

Ben Eager was able to score a touchdown for the 'Hawks in the first half....

I mean, the 'Hawks scored seven against the Coyotes' one.

Since the 'Hawks did so many things well, let's take a look at what they didn't accomplish in the game.

Something that the 'Hawks could improve upon is within the neutral zone. The puck movement within the two team zones is fine. When Campbell isn't able to bring the puck up by himself, the 'Hawks have problems. They need to establish a more comfortable passing lane between the defensemen and the front three to create more scoring chances.

Once the puck is in the opponent's zone, the 'Hawks create an almost "power play"-like situation. For example, the 'Hawks seemed to be on the power play against the Coyotes even though they were not.

Three Stars of the Game

No. 16 Andrew Ladd

No. 55 Ben Eager

No. 36 David Bolland

Note: All the Three Stars of the Game came from either the third or fourth line. Very good! It's great to see the bottom lines contributing. All 20 skaters must play well for a hockey team to succeed.

My Star of the Game (besides the aforementioned)

No. 38 Critobal Huet

Huet made 20 saves while only allowing one goal late in the game.

The next game will be Wednesday night at 7:30 PM CST on Comcast SportsNet against the Ottawa Senators (10-10-4).

I will be at the United Center to watch the game!

Let's Go Hawks!

Mark Grace Will Have to Wait; Len Kasper and Bob Brenly to Stay

Growing up as an avid Chicago Cubs fan, I had many childhood favorites. One of the main Cub players I enjoyed watching was No. 17, first baseman Mark Grace.

Grace was always a joy to watch on the field and at bat. He hit the most doubles in the majors in the '90s with 364. In the field, he collected four Gold Glove awards with the Northsiders. I really enjoyed his style and his ongoing love for the game.

When the rumor went around the media that Grace could possibly be coming back to the Cubs as a broadcaster, I was ecstatic. Grace is currently a TV analyst for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and worked part-time for Fox during the World Series.

Grace will always "bleed blue" in my mind.

During an interview by the Chicago Tribune, Grace said:

"Honestly, I was very disappointed in what I saw, especially this [last season] year, because they were, in my opinion, by far the best team in the National League. And to get swept out? Honestly, they really should be humiliated."

"As far as [Bob] Brenly goes, he's one of the best in the game, and one of the best color analysts I've ever been around. Whoever they decide to go after, those are pretty big shoes to fill."

A few months ago, Bob Brenly underwent an interview with the Milwaukee Brewers to fulfill their manager needs. Obviously, he did not get the job.

Brenly is signed with the Cubs through 2012.

The 2009 season will be Len Kasper's fifth season with the Cubs. He began his career broadcasting for the Milwaukee Brewers from 1999-2001.

Kasper will remain with the Cubs until 2011.

Both of these guys do a great job with the play-by-play announcements for the Cubs. Maybe in three or four years, Mark Grace will be back with Chicago.

Chicago Sports Preview: Bulls, Bears, and Blackhawks. Vol. 1

Well, Thanksgiving is over and it's time to head back to school for finals. Before I do, let's quickly preview/recap the Bulls, Bears, and Blackhawks.

Chicago Bulls

The Chicago Bulls (7-9) will play their last game of the "Circus Trip" today against the Philadelphia 76ers (7-9) at 4:00 PM CST.

Derrick Rose and the entire team have been struggling thus far. Vinny Del Negro and company just needs to go back to the basics, and play some simple basketball. That's really all they need to do. It looks like a well rounded high school team could even out play them.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears (6-5) will play tonight in the Metrodome against the Minnesota Vikings (6-5). The game is will be the feature of Sunday Night Football (in America) on NBC at 7:30 PM CST.

Keys of the Game

Stop Adrian Peterson: The Vikings will definitely be utilizing their star running-back after the Bears played horrible defense against the Packers.

Use Matt Forte: Forte will be a main threat for the Bears today. Look for him to run for 100+ yards with a touchdown or two.

Protect Kyle Orton: The Bears cannot risk losing Orton if they intend on making the playoffs. Orton will be a main key for the Bears success in the postseason.

This game is very important for both the Bears and the Vikings. It will be a great game. Be sure to tune-in!

Chicago Blackhawks

Overall, the Chicago Blackhawks (10-6-6) had a great "Circus Trip" compared to previous years. Even so, they struggled in the last two games against the Anaheim Ducks (13-8-3) and the Los Angeles Kings (10-9-3).

In both games the 'Hawks couldn't capitalize on most of their shot opportunities. It seemed like Patrick Sharp and Marty Havlat had many opportunities. Also, Jonathan Toews has been on a slump. And, Patrick Kane and company made some stupid penalty mistakes.

Nikolai Khabibulin is day-to-day with a lower body injury, and Aaron Johnson has been placed on the injury reserves.

The 'Hawks brought up netminder Corey Crawford to fill their roster.

This Wednesday, Dec. 3 the 'Hawks will be back home in the United Center to face-off against the Anaheim Ducks at 7:30 PM CST on Comcast SportsNet. The 'Hawks have won six games at home. Home ice advantage seems to be imperative for the 'Hawks.

Hopefully, I will have time to write a more in depth article on what the 'Hawks need to do against the Ducks before Wednesday.

Until next time,

Let's Go Chicago!

Chicago Blackhawks Rake the Leafs in the End

The Chicago Blackhawks struggled on defense to begin this game, but proved themselves worthy in the end by winning, 5-4, in overtime. My prediction was dead on (it was all luck, though) from my previous article: Blackhawks-Maple Leafs: An Original Six Showdown in Toronto.

The Toronto Maple Leafs had some lucky goals (like my lucky prediction) to start the contest. However, as the game progressed, so did the 'Hawks offence. Patrick Sharp put in two goals, and the 'Hawks found themselves with a four all tie after a Patrick Kane and Ben Eager goal.

Even though Kris Versteeg didn't add to his goal count. Versteeg did assist with Kane's goal making his point count: 20. That makes him the leader among rookies in the league, passing over Calder Cup rival nominee Derick Brassard.

The 'Hawks and the Leafs both had three power plays, and one power play goal each. Sharpie's goal was during the power play, and for the Leafs it was Matt Stajan, his sixth of the season.

The 'Hawks starting goalie was not Cristobal Huet, but was in fact Nikolai "Bulin Wall" Khabibulin. Khabi started off the game with mediocre play, with the exception of saving Stajan's penalty shot during the first period.

Tonight the 'Hawks proved that they can truly play under pressure after trailing by four goals in a "Circus Trip" game. I am liking the circus more each day.

Joel Quenneville switched up the lines a bit tonight by swapping Toews with Sharp for a few line changes. I thought it added some more physicality into the first line; similar to what Ben Eager did when he was in the first line. I liked the move.

With the exception of an assist, the 'Hawks defense did a fine job stopping the Leaf's center Mikhail Grobovski.

Three Stars of the Game

1. No. 26 David Bolland—Chicago Blackhawks

2. No. 10 Patrick Sharp—Chicago Blackhawks (Why isn't he on the All-Star Ballot, again?)

3. No. 14 Mike Stajan—Toronto Maple Leafs

My Three Picks for Stars of the Game

1. No. 55 Ben Eager—Chicago Blackhawks (Eager scored the tying goal for the 'Hawks.)

2. No. 39 Nikolai Khabibulin—Chicago Blackhawks (Even though Nik allowed four goals, he had some pretty awesome saves!)

3. No. 19 Jonathan Toews—Chicago Blackhawks (He didn't score, but had a great defensive day.)

The Chicago Blackhawks will continue their "Circus Trip" in San Jose against the Sharks on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 9:30 PM CDT. The game will be televised on WGN where available (only in the Chicagoland area; it really should be nationally!).

Blackhawks-Maple Leafs: An Original Six Showdown in Toronto

I am officially on Thanksgiving break, so that means I am at home, which also means I can watch the 'Hawks games on WGN; just in time for another " original six showdown." Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at 6:00 PM, the Chicago Blackhawks (9-4-5) will be up against the Toronto Maple Leafs (7-8-4) at the Air Canada Centre.

Chicago has had an excellet start to it's "Circus Trip" thus far, going 2-0 away from the United Center.

Let us now look at what the 'Hawks need to accomplish to fold over the Leafs:

Keys of the Game

Kris Versteeg: He has had the hot stick, scoring four goals in his current three game goal streak. So, it's simple, pass him the puck. Do I see another Calder Trophy in Chicago? Not to mention he was my Most Underrated Chicago Blackhawk in the roundtable discussion: Who is the Most Underrated Blackhawk?

Kill the Power Play or Don't Commit Penalties: The Leafs have a solid power play at 21.5 percent. Although, if the 'Hawks don't commit senseless penalties then it won't be a problem.

Power Play Goals: The Leafs also have one of the worst penalty killing units, allowing opponents to convert 26.7 percent of it's chances. So, if this game has a lot of penalties the game will be high scoring.

Goaltending: The question of whether or not Joel Quenneville goes with the "hot handed" net minor or the No.1 will be decided in Toronto. Khabi has looked pretty solid in his last two road games while stopping 31 shots against Dallas. He was also named the No. 1 "Star of the Game." I think Huet will have his turn against the Leafs.

Stop Mikhail Grobovski: The Leafs star center has scored eight times in his last eight games. That is a lot of eights. The 'Hawks need to keep the puck away from him.

Duncan Keith: In my opinion, Keith has not performed his defensive duty to his full potential. Hopefully, he can knock some more guys down and steal a few more passes on Canadian ice.

88, 19 & 10: Three of my favorite Chicago hockey numbers; three of which should have the five goals against the Leafs. The other two goals will be from No. 32 and maybe even another from No. 55.

Prediction: 'Hawks 5-4

The 'Hawks are 3-0 against the Leafs dating back to 2004. Let's leave Canada with a 4-0 record since then, and a 3-0 record on the "Circus Trip." Maybe then I can actually enjoy the circus, ha-ha.

LET'S! GO! HAWK'S!

Attention Chicago Hockey Fans: Vote for Your Blackhawks!

With the conclusion of the Presidential election, this online NHL balloting should be no sweat.

The Chicago Blackhawks have so many fans, so where are all the votes?

The rivaled Red Wings currently hold the top three spots in the All-Star Ballot. As of right now, Marian Hossa is in the lead (130,715), followed by Pavel Datsyuk (127,768), and in third place is Henrik Zetterberg (125,741). The fourth place position is worthy to Jarome Iginla (119,927).

Patrick Kane (75,107) represents the 'Hawks with fifth place on the ballot thus far.

Jonathan Toews (52,176) also represents the 'Hawks in ninth place for the Western Conference.

These two All-Star-caliber Blackhawk players should very well represent the Western Conference with the help from you, the voters!

I make it my duty to vote every moment I get as I anticipate on watching the 2009 NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 25, and want to see those two kids from Chicago on the ice.

Time: TBD. Location: Montreal, QC, Canada.

Go and vote now and often: All-Star Fan Balloting.

Even if you are not a Blackhawks fan, vote for someone! Make the NHL proud.

Mark Teahen to the North Side?

The fact is simple and we all know it: The Chicago Cubs need left-handed hitting for next year.

According to the The Kansas City Star, the Cubs are looking at Mark Teahen as a more cost-efficient solution to the left-handed hitting fiasco.

Sure, Mark Teahen would fit well in right field, thus moving Kosuke Fukudome over to center field. Teahen would also be more affordable than a Bobby Abreu or a Raul Ibanez.

According to the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, Teahen has the potential to become the next Jason Giambi. When I saw that, I thought: He may be the next player to do 'roids?

Anyway, making a deal like this would seem desperate, but with some careful consideration, it could be a fine asset for the Cubbies. Teahen batted .255 with 15 homers and 59 RBI last year. He is still young and only has room to improve. Wrigley Field would be a great place for Teahen to spike his career.

The Cubs have mentioned that Felix Pie would be a main source of trade bait, but would also give up Mike Fontenot or Ronny Cedeno to a desperate Kansas City Royals team.

Why make this move?

If the Cubs can get their hands on Jake Peavy, I say do this. If they cannot sign Peavy, then forget this aforementioned trade.

This may be a stretch of thought, but every opportunity the Cubs have is worth something.

Side note: According to an article from MLB.com, the Cleveland Indians have also given thought to Mark Teahen as a third basemen solution.

Kris Versteeg: The Chicago Blackhawks' Most Underrated Player

Ironically, my most underrated Blackhawk pick was drafted 134th overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins.

From there, Kris Versteeg played for the Providence Bruins in the AHL, until he was traded, along with a conditional draft pick, to the Chicago Blackhawks for Bradon Bochenski.

Versteeg has been compared to Patrick Kane, and both have proved that size doesn't matter in the NHL.

Versteeg has earned 12 points so far this year, ranked fourth on the 'Hawks roster and second amongst rookies in the NHL.

I wouldn't rule out Versteeg following Kane's lead, either. A back-to-back Calder Trophy in Chicago isn't too far out of the ordinary.

According to an article from the Chicago Sun-Times, Versteeg has made a believer of new 'Hawks coach Joel Quenneville:

"From where he was at the start of the summer to today shows how much he's capable of," Quenneville said. "He's a young kid with a good personality in the way he comes to the rink. He's go a lot of energy, good speed, good patience and vision with the puck. And playing with two good players complements his game."

Last year at this time, Versteeg was preparing for a game with the Rockford IceHogs. Now, he practices with NHL's Chicago Blackhawks, and finds himself in the first line with star players like Kane and Jonathon Toews.

Everyone seems to talk about Kane, Toews, Martin Havlat, Patrick Sharp, Duncan Keith, Brian Campbell, and even Dustin Byfuglien.

Where's Kris Versteeg's name on that list?

It's not too long until the "Hawk Quarters" in downtown Chicago, IL will have No. 32 jerseys shown in their window.

Blackhawks-Bruins: An Original-Six Showdown in Chicago

The Chicago Blackhawks (8-3-3) will be facing off against the Boston Bruins (7-3-3) at the United Center on Wednesday, November 12 at 7:30 PM.

Both teams are serious contenders for a Stanley Cup this year.

The 'Hawks have proved that by being 6-0-2 at home, and winning their last four games. The 'Hawks will seek out their best winning streak in nearly seven years at the United Center against the Bruins.

Speaking of the United Center, the 'Hawks average the highest attendance at home in the league. That's awesome news!

The Bruins have won six of their last seven. That is self explanatory.

How about the goaltenders for the Chicago Blackhawks?

It doesn't seem to matter who they put in net—they still win games due to the stellar performances by the men on the ice.

Cristobal Huet saved 22 of 23 against the Calgary Flames to earn his second-straight victory. Even so, Huet has not consecutively started for the 'Hawks yet. Statically, he should Wednesday night, he has a 10-3-0 record against the Bruins.

Joel Quenneville really seemed to get the 'Hawks going after a poor start with former coach Denis Savard.

Hopefully he can continue that trend Wednesday night! Go Hawks!

My prediction: 4-2 in favor of the 'Hawks.

Look for Toews to add another goal to his stats.

Chicago Blackhawks: The Halloween Series

The Chicago Blackhawks (3-3-3) will be up against the Dallas Stars (4-4-2) on "Trick-O-Treat" night. Unfortunately, I will not be able to watch the game again since my college does not have WGN-local, Versus, or Comcast Sportsnet Plus. It's upsetting.

Let's rundown what the Hawks need to do for a treat:

Score goals: Even thought the Stars have been known to have a solid defense, they lead the league with 40 goals allowed. The Hawks need to get off to a quick start and score some goals. That means you, Jonathon Towes. Let's get that first goal already!

Kill the man advantage: The Hawks are ranked seventh in killing the power play. that's great, now just keep it up against Mike Modano and co.

Patrick Sharp: He has been great so far! Feed him the puck and let him add to his team leading points and assists.

Work the man advantage: The Stars are ranked 26th in the penalty kill category. Let's take advantage in full force.

Get physical...physical!: The Hawks don't have the biggest bodies in the game of hockey, cough...Patrick Kane, but they do have the greatest skilled athletes from the bottom of the roster to the top. Use them well.

Dallas may trick the Hawks:

History on their side: Dallas won last year's series with Chicago 2-1-1.

They can actually beat the Wild: The last game the Stars played was against the Minnesota Wild (6-1-1). The Stars were successful in ending their undefeated campaign.

The ultimate "King Size" treat:

With a win on Halloween night the Hawks can open up a very possible three game win streak against the Dallas Stars (4-4-2), the Columbus Blue Jackets (3-6-0), and the Colorado Avalanche (5-4-0).

Hawks, please don't smell any feet. Let's Go Hawks!

The Cubs Might Be the First Team to Play at "The House That Ruth (Didn't) Built"

Besides GM Jim Hendry and starting pitcher Rich Harden extending their stay with the North Siders, the offseason hasn't been too exciting. Then again, it's still early. I guess I'm just eager to watch Cubs baseball again.

The last time the Chicago Cubs played the New York Yankees was on June 19, 2005 in "The House that Ruth Built."

Chicago did something all Cub fans are pretty use to at this point, they lost 6-3.

Prior to that, the Yankees played at Wrigley Field in 1939.

According to the Associated Press, The Cubs may have a chance to make history with the Yankees next year in April.

The Cubs may have the opportunity to play the first baseball game ever at the new Yankee Stadium.

Lou Pinella would appreciate the invitation.

Pinella played with the Yankees from 1974 to 1984 and managed the team from 1986 to 1988. I think he would enjoy christening the new ballpark of his former team.

I would watch it.

Friday Night Lights at Red Grange Field

How good is your high school football team?

This past Friday, my high school team shut out Glenbard East 40-0.

The fact is simple: When I was a senior at Wheaton Warrenville South High School two football seasons ago, I attended every single football game on the schedule. I wasn't just one of those crazy, loud, annoying, "super-senior-fans" that went to the game just 'cause—well, in a way I was—I truly cared about my team.

Maybe it was the fact that the Wheaton-Warrenville area loves football, or our team was simply amazing, or the unforgettable tailgating experience, or just simply that there was nothing better to do on a Friday night.

The fact of the matter was I looked forward to every single Friday for those 14 weeks of the football campaign.

I really loved going to both the home and away games.

Not only did we attend the away games as a school, but our entire "visiting" crowd was also much larger than the home crowd.

It was an entire crowd appreciation that I may never experience again.

In the 2006-2007 season (my senior year), the Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers were undefeated in their 8A class, stomping out opponents with ease. That same season the Tigers went all the way to the State Championships at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, IL.

The Tigers beat the Mount Carmel Caravan, 44-21. Prior to the game, the media had declared the Tigers the underdog.

It was an amazing sight.

Why were the Tigers so successful?

Parents say that the Wheaton area has an excellent park district program, plus many financially stable family incomes that could afford putting their kids into club sports.

Most say it was because of one student, their running back, No. 25, Dan Dierking.

Currently, Dierking plays for the Purdue Boilermakers as a third string running back. He rushed for 181 yards in 42 attempts while scoring two touchdowns last year at Purdue. He was also used periodically on the Boilermakers' special teams squad.

His senior year at WWS, Dierking rushed for an impressive 2,191 yards, with 31 of his carries making it into the end zone. He made Tiger alum Red Grange look like a backup, breaking his all-time TD count at Wheaton Warrenville South.

Any other reasons the Tigers were so unstoppable?

The coach of the team, Ron Muhitch.

Muhitch is currently serving his seventh career season at WWS. He has gone 69-14 to this day.

Last year, both the Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers and their rivals, Naperville North Huskies, had a record of 13-1.

On Oct. 19, 2007, the Tigers won a very close game against the Huskies, a score of 41-42, at Red Grange Field.

The only loss the Tigers experienced last year was the 7A State Championship game, by a score of three to seven. Note: The Tigers dropped to 7A from 8A due to population change amongst the student body.

As these teams prepare to play this Friday at 7:30 P.M., many will be watching in Naperville, IL. With a "W-Flag" this game could mark the fourth straight DuPage Conference Valley title for the Tigers.

Let the high school hype begin.

However, it does develop some greater questions.

Where will the Cubs go from here?

How will it effect the ’08 -’09 season?

What offseason moves will be made?

Will we ever have a solid bullpen?

What will happen to Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood?

I wish I could answer these questions and many more. Consider this season a true test of loyalty to those North Siders. We just believe. The rest is up to the organization and players.

Being a true, loyal, passionate, what ever word you could add to this description, Cubs fan, I’ve had many reflective feelings and questions about this year.

Overall, I am very happy about this season. We have developed a much better team than that of the years before. True Cubs fans should look at this as a positive year, rather than wanting to strangle every living thing they see. Sure, I understand the anger that can encompass our persons.

But is this the way we should act? I beg to differ.

I have the strong feeling that when those “Lovable Losers” win the World Series, it will feel like the best accomplishment in baseball history. The fact that it took 100+ years is just all the anticipation built up. In a way, it’s similar to a musical piece building up to climax. That’s how I feel about the issue.

So, just wait, embrace it, the day will come. We will rejoice.

As far as changes for the club go, let’s see if Jim Hendry can try to put this lineup together:

1. Rafael Furcal - SS
2. Derrek Lee - 1B
3. Aramis Ramirez - 3B
4. Bobby Abreu - RF
5. Alfonso Soriano - LF
6. DeRosa/ Fontenot - 2B
7. Geovany Soto - C
8. Kosuke Fukudome - CF

Remember, there is always next year.

Midway Monsters Can Break Hearts

Before this Sunday's game started, I felt a lot better than I would have if they played this game in the beginning of the season.

I didn't have too much hope for my beloved Chicago football team in the beginning of the season. After they beat the Colts to open the season, my eyes began to open up. They might have a chance to put up a winning season this year after all, I thought.

Then they played the next two games. Both games were devastating, losing by a deficit of three or four. When they beat the Eagles, I was really looking forward to playing the awful football team of Detroit: the Lions.

Kyle Orton began to really work that pigskin, establishing career highs with 24 completions, 334 yards, and a 121.4 passer rating while tossing two touchdowns on 34 attempts.

The Bears' "D" began to play to their potential as well, led by Charles Tillman and his 26-yard TD return that gave them the lead.

Unfortunately, the game had an awful ending. I knew this game was the real test to see if Da Bears had a chance at a winning season.

Both teams were 3-2 coming into this game, both teams were doing better than I thought they would, because of that I knew it would be a good game.

Matt Forte didn't perform as well as I thought he would, but Orton did. Orton had an impressive outing, highlighted by the best stat of them all: no interceptions. The Rex "INT" Grossman era is over, and I for one am very pleased about that.

However, I give my props to rookie Matt Ryan for moving that ball at the end of the game. It was also very nice to see Hester working in the WR spot. He should have more balls thrown his way.

If Da Bears can stay healthy, and find a good balance with the pass and run game, I think we have a chance to win the division and then go from there.
