Braylon Edwards Headed to the New York Jets

Time to pack your bags Braylon.

As of this morning, Braylon Edwards has been traded to the New York Jets. The Jets have given the Cleveland Browns LB Jason Trusnik, WR Chansi Stucky, and undisclosed draft picks for Edwards. The draft picks are thought to be a third and fifth round. Trusnik is a special teams player (for the most part). The terms of the deal are still being finalized.

The trade comes just after the recent new issue with Braylon Edwards. Braylon supposedly punched one of LeBron James' friends outside of a night club. The league is still investigating, but Browns head coach Mangini was supposed to be investigating the issue as well.

Apparently his investigation is over.

Braylon is no stranger to trouble during his time in Cleveland. On the night of Donte Stallworth's "incident" in which a pedestrian was struck and killed, Braylon was with Donte Stallworth prior to the incident. He helped provide the booze.

Braylon has also had a lot of issues with the fans of the Browns, saying publicly that they dislike him because he went to Michigan for college.

The trade raises many questions to Browns fans though. For one, who is going to be the starting receiver?

The only receivers on the roster after the trade are: Josh Cribbs, Mike Furrey, Ray Ventrone, and rookies Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie. And now Chansi Stuckey.

Stuckey has 11 receptions, 120 yards, and 1 touchdown on the year so far. Last year, Stuckey had 32 receptions for 352 yards and 3 touchdowns with Favre throwing to him.

Massaquoi had an impressive game last week against the Bengals, but he is still a rookie and not yet considered a legitimate starting receiver. The situation may prove beneficial to Josh Cribbs who is still seeking a contract with better money.

Another question to ask, is what team is Mangini coaching? The Browns or the Jets?

Mangini has done a lot of trading while with Cleveland, but most, if not all of it with his old team the New York Jets. And depending on the draft picks Cleveland gets, it could really turn out to be in the Jets favor.

However, the deal seems to work very well for both sides. Cleveland gets a fairly decent receiver in Chansi Stuckey. Trusnik is a very good Special Teams player. He had two forced fumbles in his game against the Titans this year.

The draft picks make the deal though. A third and a fifth are probably a little low compared to what most Cleveland fans wanted. Personally, I think a second round and fourth/fifth would have been ideal and could have been achieved.

Don't Hit Panic Switch Yet: Still Hope for Cleveland Browns

So maybe the brown pants the Browns were sporting Saturday night were less of a fashion statement and more of a metaphor. Not the metaphor that they were "crapping themselves" (the Packers' new 3-4 defense isn't that scary), but more like a team that's "crapping out."

Let's start out by being perfectly honest. This game was more of the same and can be pretty much viewed as "business as usual" for the Browns. There were no touchdowns in the preaseason game against the Packers, extending our touchdown-less streak. Heck, we didn't even get any points. And a Shaun Rogers-less defense yielded no results.

But stay with me, avoid hitting that panic switch yet Browns fans (hard as it may be).

This was only the first game of the preseason. The first game for Eric Mangini as head coach of the Browns. Browns players were yet to be coached by Mangini in game time until this past Saturday night. So for a lot of our players, they're still playing Romeo Crennel football. Just playing lax and not really getting called out for it.

And now this is where Mangini needs to make it clear: The Browns aren't going to lose. That he doesn't care if it's preseason, a game is a game. He has to instill that attitude in the Browns. Heck, it's his job to do it.

Because as soon as it's okay to let a preseason game go, then the whole preseason is lost. I mean, it is only preseason right?

And when that happens and carries over into the regular season, it's okay. It's only the first game. There are still 15 games left on the calendar, they can win those. And when that's okay, so will be losing every week. But that's okay, there is always next season.

Except there isn't always next season. Romeo Crennel was fired for his non-production and his lax attitude. And Mangini will be fired if he lets this go. And you know what? I think Mangini can get aggressive. I think he can do it.

I think Mangini can and will yell at his players. Maybe he can get them to realize they're paid professional football players and not paid tank jobs. The Browns need football players and a head coach.

Not players who will play every game like it's the preseason or a coach who will bring more of the same. He knows it as well as every Browns fan who saw that game: We accomplished nothing and that game left a sour taste in our mouths.

Our next game is against the Detroit Lions. They are a team that is hungry. They've got something to prove and they have the tools to prove it. They did beat the Falcons in a game ending field goal. The Falcons are a playoff caliber team and they lost to the Lions. What do you think the Lions will do to us?

They won a game and it doesn't even count. You think the Lions are satisfied with that? No chance. Jim Schwartz is smart enough to use that as motivation. That they still haven't won anything and they won't until it's the playoffs and they're vying for a spot in the Super Bowl (however unlikely that really is).

The Browns need to get inspired quick. They need something to inspire them the way an 0-16 season has motivated the Lions. Because the simple fact that it's their job to win games clearly isn't enough. The fact they get paid to win, not to lose, is not enough. It's time for Mangini to step up and show that he is a head coach and he will lead this team.

So can Mangini inspire his players the way an 0-16 season has inspired the Lions? I hope so.

Michael Vick and Philadelphia Eagles Reach Deal! Article Updated Constantly!

Earlier today, news was broke that Tony Dungy wouldn't be surprised if Michael Vick was signed by the end of the week. Well, Michael Vick has just finalized his deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, Aug. 13. The news has been confirmed by Vick's agent Joel Segal and multiple sources.

The deal that the Eagles and Vick have come to agree on is essentially a one-year deal with a one-year option. The deal has Vick slated to make $1.6 million in his first year with the team, while the Eagles hold an option on the second year for $5.2 million (as reported by FOXsports.com).

Vick is suspended for, at the most, six NFL games as it is, but will be active in plenty of time for the Eagles Week 13 game against the Falcons in Atlanta. He is also allowed to partake in preseason practices, and workouts and the final two games of the preseason.

Comment has not yet been made by any Eagles personnel (GM, Coach, or players). The only confirmed news is that the Eagles will hold a press conference tomorrow morning to announce the signing.

The deal is considered a bit of a surprise since the deal was originally reached on Tuesday, the same day an Eagle's personnel member denied the Eagle's interest to ProFootballTalk.com's Tom Curran. It was even said by FOXsports.com's Jay Glazer that even some of the Eagle's Public Relations staff seemed surprised by the news of Vick's signing.

The Eagle's backup quarterback Kevin Kolb was recently injured during camp. The injury isn't considered serious, but with the signing of Vick, one has to wonder how serious it is. The other quarterbacks on the Eagle's roster are A.J. Feeley and Adam DiMichele (a undrafted rookie out of Temple).

Last year, Donovan McNabb took the Eagles to the postseason with a 23 touchdown and 3,916 yard passing game. In Vick's last year playing (2006), had a 20 touchdown year and 2,474 yards through the air and another 1,000 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

With Vick's signing, one has to wonder what role he will play in the Eagle's offense. Most would assume he would simply play the backup quarterback role or the "Wildcat" formation quarterback. Still, others seem to insist that Vick would for some reason be a potential backup at the running back or wide receiver position.

The validity of these claims are not completely unfounded, but they are rather silly. What team would willingly put their quarterback in such a dangerous position? Especially a quarterback of Michael Vick's calibur?

And what does this move say about the team's faith in Donovan McNabb? It has been an issue for years on whether or not to keep Donovan McNabb. Anyone can remember when the Eagles initially signed Kevin Kolb and the big uproar that caused.

So what does the signing of a legimate starting quarterback say?

Stay tuned for more as this story develops.

2009 Cleveland Browns: A Campaign Of Hope?

So is it time for the fans of Cleveland to start believing? We've barely started the offseason, yet we've already had some fairly exciting (positive and negative) events.

We have a new head coach and general manager, and they're beginning to make some moves that they hope will change the face of the franchise. So let's have a quick analysis of what's been going on so far.

The hirings of Eric Mangini and George Kokinis are very significant. Mangini is another protege of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and was moderately successful as head coach of the Jets. Kokinis was a pro personnel director for the Baltimore Ravens and is a close friend of Mangini.

Clearly, the Browns are hoping that this tandem of buddies will work together and will get things accomplished that the previous head coach and GM couldn't.

Mangini has had a bit of a rough start, though. Reportedly snubbing the (arguably) best defensive player on our team probably wasn't his intention, but it does seem like the relationship between Shuan Rogers and the Browns can go nowhere but south.

Then, we traded Kellen Winslow, who was one of the best players on our offense.

It might be kind of hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel with things looking how they do now. But it just takes some of that old "Cleveland touch" to reinvent the situation and make it a positive one. Just watch me work my magic.

Shaun Rogers being snubbed by Mangini might have actually been a good thing, because now Mangini and Kokinis can't ignore the big tackle. They now know they have to take care of him and treat him right, or they'll lose him.

Hopefully they'll also realize that this is true with many other players as well. I think the whole experience really sent Mangini a message of how this locker room works; it said that he has to bond with his players.

And trading the stellar tight end Kellen Winslow? That's actually a pretty good move. I won't deny we probably could have gotten a lot more for Winslow, but trading him to the Buccaneers is an ideal situation. We will probably never see him again, and we got some draft picks that we really needed: A second-round pick this year and a fifth-rounder next year is amazing for us.

Plus, we were already preparing to replace Winslow when we drafted Martin Rucker last year, and we got rid of a lot of locker room drama when we traded him. Bottom line: We couldn't wait for him to grow up, and there was no way we could put up with his agent either; Rosenhaus was bearing down on us with three years left on Winslow's contract.

Still, we don't have a large quantity of picks this year, and we really need help on defense. But we can work with what we've got.

I've got a plan all ready for the Browns: Pick up that beast of a defensive lineman, Bryan Orakpo, from Texas or inside linebacker Rey Maualuga of USC. Those guys would benefit our team right away. And with our next pick (in the second round), we address what we didn't in the first round (either a linebacker or defensive lineman).

The next significant pick would be our second second-round pick, with which I think we could pick up a defensive back (preferably a cornerback). D.J. Moore (Vanderbilt), Victor Harris (Virginia Tech), and Darius Butler (Conneticut) could all possibly be available in that range, and any of them would be a great addition to the Browns' locker room.

So can you guys see the light at the end of the tunnel? Or at least a glimmer of hope for the next season? Well, I do and I'm looking forward to draft day. How about you?

With The Fifth Round Pick In the 2009 Draft, The Cleveland Browns Select . . .

The Browns need to pick someone from one of these three positions: defensive end, linebacker, or running back. Now, I would love to be more specific as to who I would like them to pick up and who they should pick up, but right now that's kind of hard. Right now, Cleveland is in the midst of a coach/GM hiring, so their entire offense and defense gameplan could change.

Assuming we stay with the 3-4 defense, Cleveland needs to take a serious look at Rey Maualuga. He is a 6'2", 260-pound inside linebacker out of USC. He is easily the top ILB in the draft class, with 74 total tackles and two interceptions on the year, one of which he took back for a touchdown. This is one hell of a kid and he's played for one of the consistently top school in the nation and done a great job.

But if we go the way of the 4-3 defense, James Laurinaitus. Everyone knows who he is, as he is from Ohio State. But this 6'3", 245-pound middle linebacker has a reason to be as known as he is. He has 121 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble on the year. If we go the way of the 4-3, we should go with Laurinaitus.

Two running backs we could look at, if we wanted a first round running back, would be Chris Wells of Ohio State, or Knowshon Moreno of Georgia. Knowshon had about six YPC, and 16 touchdowns on the year.

Wells had way less impressive stats this year, but that's not to scare anyone away. Wells is a big boy who can move faster and harder then most. Running a 4.48 at 235 pounds is just impressive. However, Wells is still undecided about whether to enter the draft or not.

But personally? I want Brian Orakpo. Brian Orakpo is a 6'4", 260-pound defensive end from Texas. He is the scariest man in this draft hands down. If you haven't seen this guy play yet, get ready to see him on Jan. 5th when the Longhorns play the Buckeyes.

Orakpo is the highest rated DE in the draft with 38 tackles and 10 sacks. And Orakpo comes decorated, having won the 2008 Ted Hendricks Award (Top DE), Bronko Nagurski (Top Defensive Player Award by Football Writers Association of America), and oh yeah, the 2008 Lombardi Trophy (Top Linebacker or Defensive Lineman).

How The Browns Can Beat a Tough Redskins Team

After a strong Week Six performance against the Giants at home, the Cleveland Browns are on the road this week against the Washington Redskins.

Every team in the NFC East is explosive. It wouldn't be surprising if three teams make the playoffs. The Giants are acting like the defending Super Bowl champions. People expect the Cowboys to make the playoffs, and the Redskins are emerging.

That being said, the Browns are in a moderately difficult division.

The Bengals are the laughing stock of the league, and lose a lot of credibility for the division. Pittsburgh has struggled but appears to be bouncing back. And the Ravens only have a good defense and are managing with a promising rookie in quarterback Joe Flacco.

The Browns were a tremendous sleeper last season and almost made the playoffs. And then everyone expected them to get to the playoffs this season.

But the Browns need to start winning more.

And if they don't win this week, all the momentum from the Monday night game is lost and they may never get it back.

Last week, Braylon Edwards mentioned that the Browns players were lost in the locker after their preseason loss to the Giants. They questioned themselves, and wondered if they were going to live up to the hype. And that was a preseason game.

This game is going to be one of the most important games in recent Browns history.

The Browns need to prove the Monday night game was not the result of a bye week and they have what it takes to get to the playoffs by beating good teams.

But how do the Browns go about that?

They have a big obstacle in the form of the Washington Redskins. That's why I'm going to outline the key points that the Browns must focus on in order to make a statement by beating the Redskins, which can carry over for a playoff run.

Don't play Winslow unless you need a conversion or touchdown.

Winslow is a one-dimensional tight end. He can only catch, and his blocking is poor. If he doesn't execute good blocks, then catching passes is his only value to the team.

And when his testicles "are the size of grapefruits," you probably should give him a little bit of a break and not play him too hard.

With Steve Heiden and Darnell Dinkins playing well in his absence, Winslow has become less of a commodity in Cleveland. Don't get me wrong, "The Soldier" is great and I love his play, but he isn't much help when not healthy, which dooms the Browns against the Redskins and their eighth-ranked defense.

The Browns shouldn't run the ball with Winslow in the game.

Instead, Cleveland should use a formation with two wide receivers and either one tight end with two running backs, or two tight ends with one running back. Those receivers should be Donte Stallworth and Edwards. And the other players should be Winslow and two guys from the Jamal Lewis, Lawrence Vickers, and Steve Heiden-trio. Those three can all block and catch.

When the Browns run the ball, Vickers and Heiden should be on the field.

Vickers is arguably one of the best fullbacks in the league. Cleveland's backfield, which is somewhat impressive, runs better when Vickers is in the game to block. Cleveland's offensive line will do their job. So let Vickers do his job.

More importantly, let Heiden do his job.

Heiden is a versatile tight end, and blocks like LeBron James dunks. (With no regard for human life.) Okay, maybe not like that. But Heiden blocks far better than any other Cleveland tight end. And nobody expects a blocking tight end out of Cleveland.

Stop Clinton Portis and the Redskins' running game.

If there is one thing that the Redskins have going for them, it's Clinton Portis.

The last three weeks, he averaged 5.6 yards per carry (395 yards on 71 carries) and has three touchdowns. And even though the Redskins lost to the Rams, they didn't stop Portis who had his best game of the year so far against them.

Meanwhile, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs has gotten 14-15 touches per game, dating back to Week Two. Similar to Portis, he is averaging 5.7 yards per carry for the season with four touchdowns since Week Two. Cleveland limited Jacobs to 67 yards (4.8 yards per carry) althought he did score a touchdown.

And do you know why? Shaun Rogers.

Rogers was double-teamed and able to shut down Jacobs. On a side note, Jacobs provided the Browns bulletin board material when he said the Browns don't hit hard. Cleveland needs to use that comment as motivation against the Redskins.

Keep the momentum from Monday night.

The Browns beat the Giants in historic fashion on Monday, and generated momentum that was needed. If the offense utilizes that momentum on Sunday against the Redskins, the Browns can pull off the upset. Derek Anderson can't have a warm-up period. He can't rely on Jamal Lewis to start things up.

Anderson needs to play well and show he deserves to start because many people don't think he should. The Browns passing attack needs to take pressure off the running game by playing like it did on Monday.

Show the Redskins that we're a team on the edge and we're not afraid of anything.

Use unfamiliar formations, specifically put Josh Cribbs in shotgun and let him run.

Step up, and take it to the Redskins.

The high from beating the defending Super Bowl champions shouldn't have worn off yet. They need to walk into this game knowing they knocked off a big team in a big way.

Be dominant in special teams

The Browns have one of the NFL's best return men in Joshua Cribbs. But he hasn't been effective this season. But if there is a game where we need him the most, it's this one. The Browns need the advantage in field position, and Cribbs has a large part in that effort. The Redskins' defense is tough, and the Browns' offense needs to spend as little time possible on the field.

So there they are. The key points to this game. This is what I believe will help the Browns win this Sunday, and eventually, make a playoff run.

What's Ailing Kellen Winslow Jr.? Could It Be...?

Kellen Winslow Jr. has been hospitalized with an undisclosed illness. But because it's undisclosed, there has been some speculation. How can't there be? Kellen Winslow is a ****in' soldier! But I believe I have come close to diagnosing K2's health issues. I have several ideas about what this "undisclosed illness" could be. It could be only one of my ideas, it could be all of them, or it could be none of them.

STD

There have been rumours that he has a swollen testicle. And let's face it, being a highly paid NFL player who is one of the top six TEs in the league wouldn't hurt your chances of scoring. In a relationship sense, not the football sense (because we all know he isn't scoring again anytime soon).

Heartache

I think it's possible he just misses the hospital. K2 could just be suffering from a case of nostalgia. After spending so many seasons not playing and in a hospital, it just might be possible that he misses all of his good buddies at the hospital. Check up with the people who used to change his bed pans, sheets, and bandages maybe? Maybe even hit on some nurses or see how his doctor is doing. The guy is just flat out considerate.

Torn Pride Muscle

Only one touchdown this year for someone who is supposed to be one of the top TEs in the league? I'd be hurting too! And it's bad enough he doesn't really know how to block as well as the other tight ends on his team.

Heiden and Dinkens are producing against the Giants as I write this article. He's about to go through a Jeremy Shockey phase where he gets really selfish and things start going downhill. Improbable? He's been asking for a new contract. And if he doesn't produce this year, you think he'll get a contract he'll like? He's already heading down that road.

I understand that I'm no doctor and I only play one on TV, but I think the realism is there. Kellen will return soon hopefully and wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

It's Not Too Late To Apologize to These Five Players

In everyday life, we all make mistakes and accidents. Sometimes those mistakes and accidents affect others negatively, and someone then owes someone else an apology.

Things are no different with the NFL.

Things are done, drama is caused, and someone deserves an apology. Maybe Steve Smith needed to say sorry to that one guy he jacked that no one had ever heard of before that incident. Or maybe that guy should say thanks to Steve for getting his name out there.

Anyway, my point remains the same. Even in the NFL, people deserve apologies. And who do you think deserves apologies the most? I'll tell you what five people I think deserve one.

5. Jeremy Shockey

This poor guy has to have caught one of the rawest deals ever. Jeremy missed the playoffs with a broken fibula while his team won the Super Bowl without him. No one was thinking about him while the Giants were making Vegas oddsmakers cry. Not only that, but being asked not to be on the sidelines for the Super Bowl? That's a slap to the face.

And of course he was going to be unhappy. Being replaced by Kevin Boss would have made me cry (past tense because Boss isn't half bad) too if I was Jeremy Shockey. In fact, I'd still be upset. Boss isn't anywhere near the blocker Shockey was and is. Running averages fell a yard when Boss replaced Shockey.

And now he gets traded to the Saints after a horrible minicamp and an alleged shouting match with GM Jerry Reese. For a second and fourth-round pick. Now that's not a bad deal, but now he has a sports hernia. He's frequently injured, and he was such a promising guy.

What's happening to a good-natured guy like Shockey is an insult. He's a great patriot to this country (says he got his tattoo because "It speaks for itself. I'm proud to live in this country, to have the right to express anything you want...I'm very American." ) and an overall great guy.

I think the big guy upstairs needs to cut Shockey some slack. Or if the guy upstairs does have a plan for everybody, he better roll out Shockey's plan fast.

4. Tony Romo

After the whole thing with Jessica Simpson, Tony deserved an apology. But after the way T.O. has been treating him this week, he not only deserved an apology, but a spot on this list. T.O. is unfairly calling him out, just like the media was unfairly invading his privacy. ESPN's almost constant coverage of both events is airing on the side of ridiculous.

T.O. complaining about not getting enough balls is stupid. Marion Barber got all of eight carries on that day. He and Jason Witten both deserved the ball more. But are they complaining? No, they aren't. So T.O., please kindly shut up before you ruin your team's chances of going to the Super Bowl, which they so rightly deserve.

There is no way you have that much talent on your team and don't make the Super Bowl.

His relationship has taken a life of it's own, though. US Weekly and all sorts of magazines are spying on the two. Tony Romo going ring shopping is big news. Jessica Simpson referring to Romo as her "future husband," is news.

Give the man and his girlfriend some privacy. It's completely outrageous that he can't catch a break. I heard more about his relationship with Jessica Simpson than his helping of a couple that had a flat tire after more than 100 cars passed by.

I mean, come on. If T.O. and the media don't get their act together and apologize, this promising young man is going to crack.

3. LeCharles Bentley

LeCharles got a raw deal, too. After getting signed by the Cleveland Browns, he was injured for what seemed like forever. He had a torn patellar tendon, a staph infection, and a virus that made doctors consider amputating his leg. Now, besides the obvious, why does he deserve an apology?

Because no one from the Cleveland Browns organization made Bently feel cared about.

LeCharles was new to the team, but that's no excuse for not keeping constant tabs on him. Or for the players to check up on him. He's your teammate, not a co-worker. He's your brother, not that one guy at work you talk to whenever you see him.

The Browns then redid his contract to give him the league minimum with incentives. Wow, incentives? What good people the Cleveland Browns are.

Now I understand their position and how they felt about LeCharles, but come on. He is a proven Pro Bowl player, and you treat him like that?

And how come LeCharles was so out of place when he grew up in that very area? He went to the prestigious St. Ignatius High School and gave them a $100,000 check for scholarships. A guy as good as LeCharles doesn't deserve this. He deserves an apology from the Cleveland Browns, pronto.

2. Vince Young

Does anything really need to be said about this? Vince Young has been the victim of the media more than Tony Romo and his girl. But being booed by your home crowd is criminal. Come on people, be a fan, not a fanatic. And yes, this paragraph is going to be considerably shorter than the others, because all that is needed to be said has been said.

1. Tiki Barber

Even in victory, New York Giants fans have been nothing but rude to him. This has to be one of the nicest guys ever, and he gets booed. If his jersey isn't hung in the rafters of the Meadowlands, it's a crime. With as many franchise records as he has, and as numerous the career highlights, he deserves some love. Not this hate that he has been dished.

His brother and himself have written five children's books. Tiki Barber is a genuinely good guy, who's getting raw deal because the fans want him to take more abuse by being a halfback for the Giants. What is your deal, Giants fans?

You have capable backs in your lineup now, yet you'll still shun NBC broadcasts that include Tiki. People should be praising him for leaving at the top of his game, not denying him the credit he so rightly deserves. Retire that jersey and publicly apologize.

And don't run him down for his comments on Strahan's contract talks or his criticism of Coughlin. Coughlin had to change his coaching style and he did. And what happened? They won a Super Bowl. Just saying.

Honorable Mentions

Cleveland Browns fans to Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns players of the 2001 season. Throwing beer bottles at them was totally uncalled for. Boo if you want, but physical violence is out of line. They had their reasons to be mad—a play being overturned a full play after it, but come on C-Town, you're better than that.

Ohio fans are jerks. This past week, during a Cleveland Browns victory, a Cincinnati Bengals fan hit fullback Lawrence Vickers with a beer bottle. Is it me, or does anyone else feel Prohibition Part II coming up?

Me. I deserve an apology from Brett Favre. While Green Bay offered you the chance to come back numerous times, you refused them. And what happened? You ruined SportsCenter and all media outlets for what felt like an eternity.

I'm pretty sure you would have gotten more news coverage than if Iran tested more nuclear weapons. Seriously, get your act together Brett. I expect an apology in the mail in a week, so get to work.
