Michigan almost always has recruiting success in Ohio, but coach Rich Rodriguez has made it a priority. On Wednesday, the Wolverines signed the top player in the state in safety Justin Turner, from Massillon, Ohion.

Michigan got off to a great start in 2010 with a pledge from Canton, Ohio star wide receiver Jerald Robinson. Robinson, ranked as one of the Rivals.com 250 juniors to watch, had 34 catches for 756 yards and seven touchdowns. He also dominated on defense with seven interceptions and is a physically gifted athlete who would have become one of the nation's most heavily recruited skill players had he not committed.

"Michigan offered me before Ohio State, and that showed me how much interest they had," Robinson told The Wolverine.com. "It's almost like Ohio State was waiting for something, and it's funny because I talked to my coach and he said the OSU coaches wanted to know if I was committing to Michigan because they were getting ready to offer.

"But I have no second thoughts. Coach Rodriguez said if I wasn't sure, I didn't have to decide now. He said there have been a lot of kids de-committing lately, and he didn't want me to make a commitment I wasn't ready to make. But I'm not that kind of person. I'm a Wolverine now and I'm going to be a Wolverine for the rest of my life.""

Notre Dame at Michigan – What makes this game dangerous is we expect the Wolverines to be in the same emotional frenzy as Notre Dame was for Michigan this year while coming off its own 3-9 campaign. It’s an early-season “Credibility Bowl” for Michigan.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez has a history of turning around programs after his first season, and the Wolverines still recruit well and have their share of strong individual parts such as Brandon Graham (second in tackles for loss nationally with 20), or running back Brandon Minor and receivers Martavious Odoms and Greg Mathews.

This program has undergone major overhauls, saw defensive coordinator Scott Shafer recently resign, and there have been a large amount of transfers (similar to Notre Dame in 2007). Expect this program to enter 2009 very hungry. If it can find stability at quarterback, it will return to the bowl scene.

[Final Grade and Awards:

I can't judge RichRod after one season and be able to justify firing him. It's one year and those out there screaming this are insane. My big hope is that this season rooted out some bandwagon/fair-weather Michigan fans.

Was it a bad season? Without a doubt. Was it the worst ever? Possibly. Is Michigan as bad as Notre Dame was last year? No. Michigan will turn around and be back on top of the Big Ten where it belongs. This season was a massive disappointment but things will only get better and these young guys learned a valuable lesson.

Even as a big Michigan fan, I've been finding it hard to blog/write about anything concerning Michigan football lately. I will say though that I enjoyed watching last Saturday's game though.

After personally watching in the Big House the loss to Illinois (I had high hopes because I was there) and then following a heartbreaking loss to TOLEDO!...I wasn't expecting much against Penn State.

But watching us hang on for three quarters, I think it was our best game yet, even though we lost and they had 39 unanswered points. I think it certainly perked up some ears around the Big Ten.

Hopefully we can get that kind of momentum up and running and maintain it against MSU this coming weekend.

What is the biggest advantage of the spread offense?

Tempo. The Michigan players are in such good shape, the pace they create on the field with the no-huddle offense is sure to wear down opponents. Other teams train hard, but the running the Wolverines have done for the past eight months —before, during and after practice—will make an enormous difference, particularly on hot game days early in the season. The team had a major adjustment period last winter, when players were throwing up during strength-and-conditioning coach Mike Barwis' sessions. But after some initial second thoughts, players have embraced the conditioning regimen and realize the difference it will make.

8) MICHIGAN (13-2, 50-1) - The transition from Lloyd Carr to Rich Rodriguez will pay off in the long run, but not in 2008.

Offense - Even though Chad Henne's numbers declined since his freshman season, he still ended up as the school's all-time career passing leader. Mike Hart also leaves as the number one rusher with over 5,000 yards. The team's top two receiving leaders also waive bye-bye along with four-fifths of the starting offensive line. All I can say is good luck, coach.

Defense - Michigan also loses its top four tacklers after allowing 882 rushing yards over the final four games. The Wolverines' top two interception leaders also depart, and the entire "D" must learn new schemes.

Outlook - Michigan should improve as the year moves along, but don't expect more than five wins (three in the Big Ten). The Wolverines get a huge break as five of their first six games are at home, but then again, that didn't help last year as they lost the first two in Ann Arbor. It's been a long time since Michigan finished below .500 (1967), but that streak will end in '08. The Maize and Blue are 5-0 as an away dog the last four years.

Carty: Tailback Brandon Minor. Despite all the talk about other backs, Minor has the size and athleticism to make his own yardage (and he'll need to, at times, behind this line).

Pitts: Michael Shaw. Lots of hype about the McGuffie kid, but this freshman has a chance to be real good also.

The good stuff: The Wolverines feature a veteran defense, particularly on the line where returning starters Terrance Taylor, Will Johnson, Brandon Graham and Tim Jamison will be hard to handle. Punter Zoltan Mesko and kicker K.C. Lopata are top-notch specialists.

To be determined: Whether an offensive line and backfield decimated by graduation can be successfully filled by inexperienced players.

Camp update: A bunch of freshmen will play based on what they've shown in training camp. Rodriguez said he expects as many as 10 first-year players to see game action early in the season. Some may even start.

Newcomers to watch: A pair of running backs, Sam McGuffie and Michael Shaw. They're fast, shifty and versatile enough to be plugged into a variety of spots in coach Rich Rodriguez's spread offense.

Pivotal players: Quarterbacks Steven Threet and Nick Sheridan, and redshirt junior left tackle Mark Ortmann. Ortmann—who has started twice in his career —will be protecting the blind side of Michigan quarterback tandem.

Make or break game: The season opener against Utah—which went 9-4 last year and returns 16 starters—should be telling. A victory will be meaningful, while a loss could forecast a rocky first year for Rodriguez and the Wolverines.

In the end: No matter how outstanding the team's defense might be, an offensive line consisting of four new starters and a shaky situation at quarterback can't inspire confidence. Michigan will win enough to extend its consecutive bowl streak to 34, but won't be playing on New Year's Day.

What to watch on offense: How quickly will the line come together? The running backs should be outstanding, the receiving corps won't be bad, and even with all the weeping and gnashing of teeth about not having Terrelle Pryor running the show, the quarterbacks aren't going to be awful.

None of it matters unless the line, one of the least experienced in America, can produce right away. This is Michigan, so there's a slew of four-star talent across the line, and fortunately, there are enough good athletes to start putting the Rich Rodriguez style of offense in place.

What to watch on defense: The line could possibly grow into one of the best in America. The offense might struggle, but if the defensive front plays up to its capability, the defense will pick up the slack. A disappointment last season, even though it was supposed to be a year of transition, there aren't any excuses going into this season.

With the tackle combination of Terrance Taylor and Will Johnson good enough to get the NFL scouts hopping, while the ends, Tim Jamison and rising star Brandon Graham, should be big-time stat producers.

From Justin Boren's statement to the press:

"I regret leaving behind my friends and teammates, but I need to stand up for what I know is right. I wore the winged helmet with pride, whether we won or lost, whether things were going well or times were tough.

"Michigan football was a family, built on mutual respect and support for each other from Coach Carr on down. We knew it took the entire family, a team effort, and we all worked together. I have great trouble accepting that those family values have eroded in just a few months. That same helmet, that I was raised on and proudly claimed for the last two years, now brings a completely different emotion to me, one that interferes with practicing and playing my best and mentally preparing for what is required

"That I am unable to perform under these circumstances at the level I expect of myself, and my teammates and Michigan fans deserve, is why I have made the decision to leave. To those of you outside the program, the loyal Michigan fans and alumni, I know you will have trouble understanding, but I do want to thank you for your years of support. I wish my teammates the best and will always be proud to have been a part of Michigan football over the past two years."

This is only what was released to the press. Justin also included a long list of other unconscionable changes in the program since Carr's departure, which included:

- Cancellation of nap time.
- No longer being able to watch "16 Candles" in the film room.
- Coaches now screaming instructions rather than saying "Whosagoodboy? Yousagoodboy!"
- Weight training.
- Long runs no longer rewarded with steak sandwich.
- Coach now killing puppies rather than dirty kittens.
- Hard work now required rather than encouraged.

• It's another ho-hum spring in Ann Arbor, just with a new coach (Rodriguez), a new offense and no quarterback. Georgia Tech transfer Steven Threet, who has yet to throw a pass in college, competes for the starting QB job with David Cone (one collegiate pass attempt) and Nick Sheridan (no pass attempts). Good luck with that.

• Whoever wins the coveted quarterback job needs someone to block for him, and the Wolverines must replace their two top linemen (left tackle Jake Long and center Adam Kraus) and two other veterans (Alex Mitchell and Jeremy Ciulla). Perry Dorrestein backed up Long last year and will get a good look this spring.

• The defense will be in the backdrop, but the Wolverines still must find replacements for their top four tacklers. Obi Ezeh might move from middle linebacker to strongside 'backer, filling Shawn Crable's spot but creating a new opening in the middle.
