Giants Edge Chiefs: 3 Studs, 2 Duds, and 1 Play

The Giants made the score look far closer than it should have been. For NFL fans not watching this game, they might get the idea that Cassel may have had a nice showing. Maybe they thought Larry Johnson made the (usually) great run defense look pathetic.

Neither was the case.

The Giants came out guns-a-blazing like always and scored for the fourth consecutive time on their first drive. They controlled the entire first half and lit up the Chiefs for roughly five straight drives, until they finally converted on a third down.

As the title states however, you will get a better look at how this one went when looking at the duds, studs, and the play.

Three Studs

Steve Smith, 11 catches, 134 yards, 2 TD's
Smith is incredibly agile, sure handed, and an all around phenomenal athlete. He has performed to perfection in every game this season, and some how, some way always finds a way to stay open.

He has only recently been noticed on the media levels, but has been known to Giants fans as the guy that would replace Plaxico Burress.

Smith had eight of his 11 catches come in the first half, and both touchdowns. As far as I can remember, almost every touchdown has been in the middle of the field where Smith likes it best. He will continue to torch defenses for 5-10 catches until they prove they can actually cover him.

Eli Manning, 20/34, 294 yards, 3 TD's, 1 INT, 104.0 QB Rating
Manning continued to beat defenses when they decided to stack the box and it wasn't any difference against Kansas City. Two of his three scores as mentioned previously went to #12, and the third was to rookie Hakeem Nicks (more about that later)

Manning had the ball zipping from left to right all day, and sometimes even rolled out or shuffled his feet in the pocket to deliver a pin-point toss. The interception was thrown to the back shoulder of Mario Manningham, so the blame can really go either way.

Big Blue Wreckin' Crew
The game was more of a killing than it might appear to be, remember? After Manning went down the defense was forced in the game frequently and looked pretty tired when all was said and done.

Michael Boley, Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Rocky Bernard all found their way into the quarterback, and to be honest one of these guys possibly had a chance at all five considering how many guys flooded the backfield every time it was infiltrated by blue jerseys. Factor in the fumble on the opening drive, and the New York G-Men brought it to KC.

Two Duds

Mario Manningham and... Mario Manningham...
When you get targeted the second most on the team (8) but you fail to catch even a quarter of those balls, you automatically deserve the only spot on such a list.

Manningham has been extremely dependable up until this point in the season, but he had quite an off day on Sunday. He had at least three passes bounce directly off his hands, and that number is generous. Manning's interception even could have possibly been negated had Manningham caught what hit him in the hands, though I must admit, not very accurately.

Manningham did have one catch, and it did go for a whopping 43 yards, but even that almost escaped his grasp. Manning threw a fade to MM who was streaking down the right sideline and bobbled the ball two or three times in stride and almost didn’t even make the box score.

One Play

Manning to Nicks... 54 yards of pain
I must admit I kind of cheated here. This is actually a combination of two plays. The first is in which Manning threw an incompletion to Steve Smith for what would've been a 35 yards pass. What makes it important is what happened before the throw. Manning appeared to have crow-hopped as an outfielder would before throwing the ball, except no one even touched Eli on the pass.

What has since been described as a bruised heel, Kevin Gilbride called a screen pass on the next play, probably to ensure that Manning wouldn't have to do much. I don't think they foresaw Hakeem "The Dream" Nicks streaking for 54 yards after weaving past two defenders. When Nicks got down to the five yard line, he beautifully angled himself for a stutter go after the safety looked foolish.

Look Ahead
The Giants return home against the Raiders and I expect the running game to hit 200 yards for the first time this season. Also, look for Mario Manningham to have a comeback game as Nmandi "Awesome"gha will be all over Steve Smith.

‘Til next week, go Big Blue!!

*As this is my first column in a great while, I must apologize to my other community leaders for somewhat dropping the ball. I entered the University of Southern Maine in the fall and had little to no time on my hands. Don't fret however, I plan on chronicling the New York Giants season from here on out.*

Fantasy Factory: Analyzing Picks One Through Ten (No. 4-6)

Fantasy Factory: Analyzing Picks One Through Ten (No. 1-3): Click Here

Alright, here we are back for the second stage of achieving fantasy greatness. Having picks four, five, or six is one of my favorite draft positions. You don't have to wait extremely long to make your next pick, and it helps gauge who will be available when you do select your next stud.

Drafting at No. Four, Five, or Six

Selecting at these positions opens up a new world of possibilities. Naturally, the top three running backs have already been selected.

** Footnote: If you have pick four, one of the top running backs will be available. Such as Matt Forte or Maurice Jones-Drew. In that case, select them with your number four pick.

It also is a time to start looking at drafting a different position, such as wide receiver. I know it sounds crazy, but he's just THAT good.

However your style, here are four players, that I find logical choices to draft at the aforementioned draft positions.

Steven Jackson, RB, St. Louis Rams
I know what you're thinking if you were someone that drafted S-Jax last season. He didn't really get the job done and was often inconsistent. Take a chance though, and see Jackson's ceiling for this season.

Why Steven Jackson Should Be Your First Round Pick

New head coach Steve Spagnuolo looks to use Jackson as an "offensive centerpiece," and will do anything to get the ball in his hands.

Whether it be on the ground or through the air.

Improved offensive line with Mike Carney at fullback, sixth overall pick Andre Smith, and outstanding center Jason Brown clearing the way.

Easiest schedule in the NFL. Yeah...that's a pretty good reason.

Why Steven Jackson Shouldn't Be Your First Round Pick

Team could be down in a lot of games, meaning less carries for Jackson.

Injuries have been a problem for Jackson in the past, and you should be cautious that a missed game or two is definitely a possibility.

I went to Florida with a buddy for ESPN The Weekend in March, and he has connections with ESPN so we got to meet and hang out with plenty of athletes. Of the NFL running backs we met, Brandon Jacobs, Brian Westbrook, and Steven Jackson, he was by far and away the least friendly, and downright stand-offish. It's always annoyed me so I thank you for listening.

Final Verdict: PPR leagues will be great for Jackson as he usually hauls in 50 catches a year (caught an amazing 90 in 2006!).

Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans
Johnson had an extremely impressive rookie campaign, even with Lendale "Fatty" White sniping a ton (pun most definitely intended) of Johnson's scores. How will 2009 treat this stellar sophomore?

Why Chris Johnson Should Be Your First Round Pick

Averaged an incredible five yards per carry in '08, and more carries in 2009 could equal a ridiculous jump in yards.

One of the few true "big play threats" in the NFL with five rushes of over 30 yards in '08.

There's talk that the team will be less conservative in 2009 (which could mean less touchdowns of carries within the three yard line...Where Lendale had eight of his TDs).

Why Chris Johnson Shouldn't Be Your First Round Pick

Lendale White is apparently at his lowest weight ever coming into camp and is in his contract year. If he sticks around it could mean trouble for Johnson.

A soft home schedule, but a rough road one could mean inconsistency for CJ.

Final Verdict: Mr. 4.29 should have another great season, and I highly recommend grabbing him at pick five or six if he is still available.

Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals
Everyone got a peek at what Fitz could do when under pressure when he set NFL records for receptions and touchdowns during a postseason run. The guy whose records he obliterated? Some old man named Jerry Rice.

Why Larry Fitzgerald Should Be Your First Round Pick

Third easiest schedule in the NFL, including six divisional games in which the average pass defense was 19th.

Arizona returns a lot of the same key pieces from last season. In the chance that Anquan Boldin doesn't return, Steve Breaston could become a viable replacement.

If Kurt Warner stays healthy, and Beanie Wells can adjust to NFL rushing, than it could mean even bigger numbers for Fitz.

Why Larry Fitzgerald Shouldn't Be Your First Round Pick

Running backs have often been something you fill in the first round. Playing with a flex spot means you could stock up and start three great backs. Taking a wideout first means your behind the pack.

Anquan Boldin not returning, or holding out could mean, as previously stated, that Breaston would fill in. But he would have to match his 1,000 yard rookie season to truly help Fitz get even better.

Final Verdict: Fitz is without a doubt the best wide receiver in the NFL and is well worth a first round choice, assuming you take the best ranked RB the next time by.

LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, San Diego Chargers
Tomlinson is another one of the players gracing this list that you might be a little nervous about saying their name aloud at your draft day party with some buddies. Don't be.

Why LaDainian Tomlinson Should Be Your First Round Pick

Eclipsed 1,100 yards, double digit TDs, and led the NFL in targets for running backs with 77. What more could you want?

If Vincent Jackson can match his last season's numbers and Antonio Gates gets back to being a healthy tight end, LT should have no problem returning to 15 touchdowns and 1,300 yards.

Norv Turner has told reporters that LaDainian Tomlinson could very easily win this years rushing crown. Does that matter? Well, he's the one who decides how many carries LT will get.

Why LaDainian Tomlinson Shouldn't Be Your First Round Pick

He turned 30-years-old. Look it up.

Chargers franchised Darren Sproles, clearly looking forward, and he could grab some carries from LT on a week to week basis.

Injuries have been nagging away since last season at Tomlinson, but it might not be that big of a problem compared with last seasons numbers. Factor in that he's a year older, however, and you could encounter some problems.

Final Verdict: I like LT to have a bounce back year, and he could most definitely fall even a little further if you have a later pick.

Final Thoughts
Some great selections come along at these positions on the draft board. Make sure you pair up your first pick with a great second one if you make a risky decision.

Fantasy Factory: Analyzing Picks One Through Ten (No. 1-3)

I promised I wouldn't let an article get written about Fantasy Football until at least the Fourth of July. Well, I was pretty close.

To kick off what will surely be another amazing Fantasy season filled with busts, late round gems, and injuries, we will be looking at what to do with one of your most important picks, the first-rounder.

Now don't get me wrong, I know that most drafts are won in the later rounds, right between your seventh and 10th picks. The ones where you have to draft the sleepers and the promising rookies.

But that doesn't take away from the severity of your first pick. This article will help you make the right decision.

Now, when I get to future articles concerning later picks, I will not be choosing the same players as my final verdict, I will be changing it up to hopefully expand the mind into making what they believe is the final and correct choice.

Is it Too Early?

It is one of the most popular questions in Fantasy sports. And there really is a simple answer, no.

Technically, if you have the second pick in the draft, is it too early to draft Larry Fitzgerald? Well, no.

If you like Larry Fitzgerald enough to draft him at two, there's an extremely good chance he doesn't fall to pick No. 19 [assuming a 10-team league drafting snake style] which would be your next selection.

Does that mean that drafting Tony Gonzalez with the fifth pick is ok? Well, no. Tony Gonzalez is someone that can be found in the sixth and seventh rounds. That would mean that taking Gonzo with your fourth- or fifth-round pick would be a better choice.

Remember, mock drafts were made for a reason.

Drafting at No. One, Two, or Three

Now, let's get down to business.

Let's assume you have one of the following picks. Many people draft in many different styles. A lot of people think that going WR-WR is the smartest thing [this is scientifically proven as smart, but we'll get to that later], and some people like getting their running backs early, as they are the most consistent on a week to week basis.

However your style, here are four players, that I find logical choices to draft at the aforementioned draft positions.

Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings
Far and away one of the best running backs in the National Football League. Peterson has been one of the more consistent running backs in the league, Peterson will most likely be the first selection in roughly 80 percent of all leagues.

Why Adrian Peterson Should Be Your No. 1 Pick

He rushed for 100 or more yards 10 times in 2008

Increased his workload by about six carries per game from his rookie season, edging closer to being the$ full-time back

Eleven games last season with at least 20 carries

Added muscle going into camp this season, allowing Peterson to see extra playing time on pass protection

Why Adrian Peterson Shouldn't Be Your No. 1 Pick

Only scored 10 touchdowns last season, you can sacrifice all his yards for someone who sees paydirt more

Type of league. Adrian Peterson takes a serious hit in PPR leagues to the running backs that follow

Final Verdict: Adrian Peterson is still the man, and a completely viable option with the No. 1 pick. Don't expect Peterson to fall to even the third pick.

Michael Turner, RB, Atlanta Falcons

Turner the Burner rewarded everyone in last year's draft who took him in the fourth or fifth round with a flyer choice with an incredible 1,600-yard season with plenty of touchdowns to go around. But how does he stack up in 2009?

Why Michael Turner Should Be Your No. 1 Pick

Has only been a "starter" for one season, and still completely fresh for his second season

The acquisition of Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez opens up the running game even more

And don't forget, Gonzalez can block better than... Wait... Who was Atlanta's TE last year?

Why Michael Turner Shouldn't Be Your No. 1 Pick

An extremely hefty workload last season could catch up with him [over 370 carries]

An elite passing game may happen this year in Atlanta. Gonzalez, Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, and Harry Douglas could give Turner even fewer opportunities

Assuming the previous statement is true, or ATL just wants to lessen his load, say Turner gets 330 carries, that puts him on pace for roughly 1,480 yards and 12 TD's. Certainly great numbers, but maybe not
No. 1 material

Final Verdict: You might get some slack for passing on the great AP, but don't worry about it. Turner's lack of carries in his first few years should make him fine after one long season.

Matt Forte, RB, Chicago Bears

Matt Forte...Another running back that you could've had pretty late last season. Factor in DeAngelo Williams, Michael Turner, Chris Johnson, Steve Slaton, and Jonathan Stewart, and that's a hefty load of great running backs.

Why Matt Forte Should Be Your No. 1 Pick

Finally...Someone who can catch the ball out of the backfield, major plus in his stock for PPR leagues

Great Offensive Line + Great Defense + Windy Conditions + Freezing Weather = One great fantasy running back

Lack of passing options for new man behind the center Jay Cutler should make for lots of checkdowns to Matt Forte

Why Matt Forte Should Not Be Your No. 1 Pick

An extremely hefty workload in his rookie season could make for a sophomore slump

If Jay Cutler finds his groove, the running game could lose 5-8 carries a game [or, according to Forte's average from last season, two or four fantasy points... per week.]

Final Verdict: Even I have to admit I wasn't a big Forte fan until I wrote this column. Anyone taking a count, that's only two con's with three pro's.

Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars

Somewhat of a surprise when most people opened their draft kits, MJD is projected to go in the first five or six picks in this coming fantasy season.

Most people are truly blind to what an incredible season MJD could have, but also be cautious of the downfall that he could also meet.

Why Maurice Jones-Drew Should Be Your First Pick

MJD will finally be the starter in Jacksonville after a few seasons as a back up. Expect his first season over 1,000 yards

MJD is the tied with Forte as the most valuable back overall if you're a member of a PPR league

Jacksonville will most likely continue to be a run first team, though the addition of Torry Holt is something that I think went a little under the radar

Why Maurice Jones-Drew Should Not Be Your First Pick

No one, not even the so called experts, not even Jacksonville management can predict if MJD's body will handle the full workload

The addition of an excellent wide receiver in Holt could take away a few of the targets that MJD might've seen

Final Verdict: In PPR leagues, MJD could be taken even nearer to the top of the draft, though still may fall past Forte due to his proven ability

Final Thoughts
When all is said and done, the four guys that were just mentioned should be within about 30 points of each other, which equals out to about two points per week.

So if you lose by a point or two, it would be easy to blame it on Turner when AD has a stellar week, or you could instead blame it on when your draft day blunder really occurred. Somewhere in the later rounds.

Defensive Outlook No. 1 Of 3: The Fierce Defensive Line

The best thing that could have happened for our defense did.

Everyone seems to have forgot about them during the hooplah of the Giants "not having ANY WR's."

The Giants defense in 2009, will be one of the best in the entire NFL, and to get a better look, I will brake down all three parts of the fearsome eleven that will often see the field for Big Blue.

This first article will be focused on the defensive line that we have put together this year. We have seen it all so far, with injuries to some of our big men, free agent pick ups that went mostly unnoticed, and some training camp battles that will definitely spark some friendly competition.

Big Boys Up Front: Defensive Line

Two years ago, during our miraculous and unforgettable Super Bowl run, our defensive line was one of the most fearsome in years. Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora will again anchor the end positions, but some crucial free agent signings will keep our line fresh and healthy for the entire season.

Our defensive tackles will hopefully include the recovering Barry Cofield, the big man Fred Robbins and free agent acquisitions Chris Canty and Rocky Bernard.

Speaking of which, I think one of the most underrated pickups this off season is indeed the previously mentioned Chris Canty. He will definitely be playing a major role in the operations of the D-Line this year.

He stands at a massive 6' 7'' which gives him the perfect opportunity to swim around offensive line men, and an even better chance at swatting down balls if he can find a way to get his massive frame near the QB.

Another crucial, and brand new member of the New York Giants is Rocky Bernard. He wrapped up over 40 tackles last year with the struggling Seattle Seahawks and will have a much more important role as he will most likely start if he can outperform Barry Cofield.

Though Bernard will have struggles of his own, as he had shoulder surgery in the off season.

As a whole, I think if we can get the right amount of substitutions in, and Osi Umenyiora can return to being an elusive and speedy force to be reckoned with, then the New York Giants will have one of the best defenses in the entire league.

Fantasy Factory: Hanley Ramirez, Mr. Overrated

The name of the fantasy player in front of the statistics.

It is the most misleading thing in all of fantasy sports.

Everyone, even myself, is completely guilty of doing this exact same thing time and time again. We turn a blind eye to the stats in front of us, and only focus on the name of the player that is involved in the trade.

If the trade is of a mediocre value, possibly an Adam Jones and Tim Wakefield for an Adam Lind type deal, then the names really go away and we focus on what is important. Will that player help you win?

But all of a sudden, throw in the name of a big time athlete, a la Hanley Ramirez, and nothing else matters.

A close friend of mine and I are in my 12-team school league (currently we rank 2nd and 3rd). We decided to take a look at some stats, due to not one, but a couple trades that have gone down involving Han Ram.

Players that have, how can I put this, BETTER numbers than Hanley

I, like most fantasy players, love reading Matthew Berry's columns on ESPN.com and often take every bit of info that I can.

One thing that he often does is not include the names of players, but has players labeled 'A' and 'B', to take away the value that a players name carries.

Take a look below and you'll see what I mean. I will even spice it up a little by putting the stats of 5 players below. I will do two players who are NOT shortstops, and two players that are, to give you a better look at position v.s. position.

Player A: .321 ... 46 Runs ... 16 HR's ... 51 RBI's ... 11 SB's
Player B: .314 ... 40 Runs ... 12 HR's ... 39 RBI's ..... 9 SB's
Player C: .325 ... 39 Runs .... 8 HR's ... 34 RBI's ..... 9 SB's
Player D: .376 ... 35 Runs .... 7 HR's ... 31 RBI's ... 14 SB's
Player E: .305 ... 39 Runs .... 9 HR's ... 30 RBI's ... 13 SB's

Well, well, well, that is a lot of numbers to take in at the brain at one time, so let's digest some together.

Player A leads all of them in runs, home runs and actually leads all in RBI's too.

Player B is pretty solid in all stats too, second in most major categories, even though he slightly drops off in SB's.

Player C has a great average and solid numbers in everything else.

Player D is leading in batting average, though he missed plenty of at-bats on everybody else, roughly 65 to be exact, but doesn't that make the other numbers just as impressive? Throw in those 65 AB's and he may be close to 45 runs, 50 RBI, and 20 SB's. Which in my opinion, makes him one of the elite players on the list.

Finally we get to Player E. Again, he is middle of the pack in most categories, but has a very solid number of SB's and runs.

So, curious as to the players we just checked out?

Players A and B were the non-shortstops, and they were Torii Hunter, and shockingly, the great statistics of Player B is Justin Upton of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Player C is the one and only Hanley Ramirez, who doesn't lead in any category, except for possibly batting average due to Player D, Jason Bartlett, missing so many games.

Player E is "way past his prime," Yankee captain Derek Jeter, on pace for a 20-20 season.

What YOU can do with someone like Hanley Ramirez

Well first off, if you're someone who drafted Hanley Ramirez with the number one pick in the draft, or even number two, you have come nowhere close to getting what you expected.

So at this point, you may have no other choice but to keep him and hope that he tears it up in the second half, OR you can do the smart thing...flip Hanley for all he's worth.

I recommend number two. Like I went into earlier, people for the most part look at only the name of the player, and right now, you still might be able to deal Hanley for someone like Mark Teixeira, Ian Kinsler, or Miguel Cabrera.

If your pitching staff is hurting, you could even give up Hanley for someone's ace, and then take their SS in return and see what you can build on.

Now don't get me wrong, I think Hanley Ramirez is a tremendous baseball player, and even a better athlete. But when it comes to fantasy, there are just better options available.

A lot of people use the argument, "But he's the best available SS in the MLB." While this statement in itself is debatable, I think he's worth taking a hit at SS when you can clearly upgrade at other positions.

For example, its worth taking a hit at SS if you can trade Hanley for someone like Miguel Tejada (beating Hanley in half the categories including RBI and average...not really taking a loss at the shortstop position), and grabbing at all star at another position like Ryan Braun or Victor Martinez (I believe there is less talent this year at catcher than even SS).

Final Verdict

I guess what I'm trying so hard to make apparent for everyone, is that the smartest thing to do as a Hanley owner would be to trade him for the big name players who are known for good second halfs or even the ones who have just been steadily performing this season.

I know many of you may think I've just taken the players who may be better than Hanley and not the whole story, but in reality there are plenty of other "no name's" that have performed far better than Hanley.

Ready for the last thing that might finally crack open the fantasy eyes?

Looking back at a 12-team league draft, there were players taken with the 200 something pick that have given their owners more than Ramirez.

Don't believe me? How about Shin Soo Choo with the 236th pick? Adam Lind with the 245th? How about Pablo Sandoval with the 218th selection?

Hell, there are free agents that have been added within the last couple of weeks, even days that are performing tremendously. How about the now famous Ben Zobrist? He is beating Ramirez in every single offensive category except for batting average.

If your league takes OPS into account, than you could always take Zobrist with his AL leading 1.086 (trailing only Albert Pujols in the entire MLB).

Well there you have it, the numbers simply do not lie. To close out the article, I promised a friend I would include the following information, a final comparison if you will, to hopefully push you over the edge of Mount HanRam.

Hanley Ramirez (in case you forgot): .325, 39 Runs, 8 HR's, 34 RBI's, 9 SB's
Pla. B (owned in only 86% of leagues): .275, 44 Runs, 14 HR's, 47 RBI's, 14 SB's

I'm pretty sure in any league 50 batting average points is worth more runs, almost twice as many homers, a handful of RBI's, and the ever elusive stolen bases.

But really. Do you think Mark Reynolds even knows this?

Fantasy Baseball Super Stuffed Weekly Recap: Week II

For anyone who may now be following the series, I must say thank you for the support and hope that your fantasy team jumped a couple spots in the standings after my opening week article.

Let's dig right in on what was one of the most exciting weeks in a long time. A couple cycles, a couple no-hit bids, and overall, a great week for some of the league's best and most valuable fantasy assets.

*Stats are from Apr. 13-Apr. 19*

American League Batter of the Week

Ian Kinsler, 2B, Texas Rangers: .556, 5 Runs, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 SB, 1.600 OPS

Before getting injured towards the end of last season, the Rangers second baseman was one of the favorites to take home the AL MVP award. Apparently Kinsler didn't want this season to end like the last one and found his groove during week two.

From Apr. 13-17, Kinsler had four straight games with two or more hits, but one of those games was clearly more important for the young stud than the others.

On the fifteenth, Kinsler went 6-for-6 with 4 RBI, which included one of the three cycles hit this week. Don't forget, he is also a running threat, which just adds to his fantasy value.

Looking Forward: The Texas Rangers open the week with a three game series against the Blue Jays, and face Roy Halladay in the opening game. Against the three projected starters, Kinsler is 5-for-17, so look for him to maintain the average and hopefully keep sniping the bases.

Honorable Mentions: Kevin Youkilis, Aaron Hill, Brian Roberts

National League Batter of the Week

Ryan Ludwick, OF, St. Louis Cardinals: .417, 4 Runs, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 1.315 OPS

From the very start of the season, I had a feeling that Ludwick would fall in some drafts. Due to his poor spring, and many critics saying that it could easily been a fluke year for in 2008 some people got a real bargain when they took him in the middle of the draft.

With a slow start to the week, Ludwick picked it up going 7-for-15 in his series with the Chicago Cubs, and also drove in seven runs. Most impressive however is his hitting streak of 21 games dating back to last season, which is something to keep an eye on.

Looking Forward: The Cards get a home stand with the New York Mets for the first three games of the week. Ludwick will see John Maine for the first time, as well as Oliver Perez and Livan Hernandez for only the second time a piece. Looks like a pretty unpredictable week, but he should be able to keep it up.

American League Pitcher of the Week

Zach Grienke, SP, Kansas City Royals: 14.0 IP, 2-0, 19 K's, 0.00 ERA, 1.07 WHIP

Grienke is on complete fire right now. He has pitched an incredible 20 scoreless innings to open the season, and capped off his week with a stellar outing against Texas tossing a complete game and fanning ten.

Next Scheduled Start: Grienke will take the mound on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers. The players on the Tigers current roster have only hit a meager .259 against Grienke. An added note: Those same Detroit players have struck out a whopping 31 times against ZG.

Honorable Mentions: Glen Perkins, AJ Burnett, Gavin Floydd

National League Pitcher of the Week

Doug Davis, SP, Arizona Diamondbacks: 16.0 IP, 1-1, 11 K's, 1.13 ERA, 1.06 WHIP

I originally had Chad Billingsley in line for this award, but he is currently owned in 99 percent of ESPN Fantasy Leagues, while Davis is owned in a...wait for it...1.9 percent.

Though Davis as you can see lost one of his two starts this past week, he went eight strong innings against the St. Louis Cards and only gave up two earned runs while striking out eight.

Davis' win had roughly the same stat line as his loss, though included the all important 'W'. Going once again an eight strong innings against the Giants, Davis got the runs he needed to get his first of hopefully many wins this season.

Next Scheduled Start: Interestingly enough, Doug Davis takes the hill on Thursday against the team he beat on Sunday, the San Francisco Giants.

Now don't be too quick to toss him in the lineup yet. San Fran has surprisingly hit a combined .346 off David, which is incredibly high. Keep an eye on this start, and if he impresses yet again, make a roster spot.

Waiver Wire Wonders

I will now be putting a little more into this section, because it is what I feel to be a very big part of fantasy play. Anyone can go and add the guy who just hit three home runs while sitting on the free agent list, but sometimes we all need to find this guy BEFORE he does that. Hopefully this helps.

Ricky Romero (SP, TOR): Romero was a top 10 draft pick for the Jays a few years back, and in his first three starts this year, has gone a total of 21 innings with only four earned runs crossing the plate. Romero may not help to much in the K category, his ERA and WHIP are sure to make up for that.

Chris Duncan (1B/OF, StL): Duncan is currently owned in only 40 percent of ESPN Fantasy leagues, why wouldn't you want someone who usually hits after King Albert? Chris is hitting .389 and has improved against lefties this season. After going 5-for-36 against southpaws last year, Duncan has 11 hits already and continues to hit off of them very well.

Nyjer Morgan (OF, Pit): I was very close to including him on last years list, but decided to give it another week to see if he was for real. Well, Morgan earned his way onto the list after hitting .340 thus far in the season.

An extra-base threat as well, Nyjer has wo doubles, and two triples as well. Though not a home-run machine (zero), he makes up for it by giving you stolen bases (three).

Random Ramblings

What's better than completely random thoughts that offer some twisted form of assistance? You guessed it. Nothing.

I apologize. Chien-Ming Wang is NOT ok

Take note that Manuel Corpas has taken over the closer role from Huston Street in Colorado

Asdrubal Cabrera went 10-for-20 against the Yanks this week, and owned in only seven percent of fantasy league. Plus he's the first guy in MLB history with the name Asdrubal.

Feel free to drop until they can prove their worth the roster spot: Jordan Schafer (11 K's last week), Carlos Guillen (4-for-21), Brian Giles (.148), Jason Varitek (Only if a better catcher is available, one that preferably will play over 125 games)

For all the people who drafted Matt Wieters, it has been announced that he will be moving up the majors sooner than what was previously believed. Look for him to land in BAL by the middle of May.

Keep an eye on Kyle Davies and Clayton Kershaw...Just sayin'

Ervin Santana, and John Lackey look to rejoin the Angels by mid May. If for some reason either is available, add whenever possible.

Dontrelle Willisthrew 62 pitches in a recent AAA Lakeland game...And landed 78% for strikes.

When asked when Daisuke Matsuzakawould return, Francona had the following to say: "I think the medical staff is still kind of sifting through that." Hmmmm....

Extra Innings

For those of you who aren't aware, Elijah Dukes was recently suspended for a game, threatened with demotion, and fined $500 by the Washington Nationals. For what? Being a mere five minutes late to the stadium on game day.

Normally, I would think this was a tad harsh, but Manny Acta is trying to get the club on track.

Then it was released that he was late because he was doing charity work FOR the Nationals. He spent the entire morning with the local little league team and ran into traffic. Is this organization a joke or what?

The funniest part? The day before this happened, Adam Dunn and Ryan Zimmerman had incorrect jerseys put into their lockers that bore the name "NATINALS" on the front of their jersey. Ironic, huh?

Must Watch Fantasy Game of the Week

On Friday night, Josh Johnson takes the hill for the fourth time for the Marlins, who currently hold the best record in baseball. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard look to hand JJ his second straight loss.

Big Apple Heroes: New York's Most Loved Athletes

Recently, Mike Kent put together a nice article on what he believed to be the top 10 fan-favorites in the state of New York.

I was lucky enough to spend the first three years of my life in New York and, while I cannot remember many athletes (or remember anything in general), I thought I should give this list a shot of my own.

I hope you enjoy the following, and don't forget to check out Mike's either for a second opinion!

10. Leon Washington, Running Back for the New York Jets

Sometimes called the Sparkplug of the Jets, Leon Washington is one of the few players in the NFL who is an invaluable asset to his team but somehow unknown in other parts of the country.

Washington gives the Jets an added running threat and also is one of the best return men in the game today. Hopefully Leon can see more touches this year, which should please fans of the J-E-T-S, considering he is even more liked than starting NY back, Thomas Jones.

9. Henrik Lundgvist, Goaltender for the New York Rangers

One of the best young goalies in the NHL today, Henrik has been nothing short of great. He has accomplished many things in his short career thus far, including the All-Rookie team, an All-Star game, and he is also the first goalie in NHL history to win 30 or more games in his first four seasons.

After signing a recent six year contract making him the highest paid goalie in the NHL, I know all New York hockey fans are looking forward to his time in front of the net.

8. Johan Santana, Starting Pitcher for the New York Mets

Arguably the best pitcher in all of Major League Baseball, and quite possibly the best the NL has to offer, Johan has been a tremendous asset to the Mets. Santana quickly learned last season that he would have to go deep into games due to the lack of bullpen help, something he did many times.

During the playoff hunt towards the end of the season, Santana even elected to pitch on only three days rest, something very uncommon for such an ace. Santana looks to use the revamped pen and high powered offense to lead the Mets to the playoffs, and hopefully the World Series.

7. Mariano Rivera, Closer for the New York Yankees

Mariano has held the hearts of all New Yorkers since his early days. As he nears the end of his long and storied career, many Yankee fans have their favorite Sandman memory.

Being the last member of the MLB wearing the number 42, the number will disappear from baseball forever very shortly, and Yankee fans treasure the moment every time Mo touches the mound.

6. Eli Manning, Quarterback for the New York Giants

Having the quarterbacking position in New York poses two "giant" problems. The first being the stadium. It has oft been reported that there can often be winds going in two different directions depending on where you are seated, making it an obvious problems for all quarterbacks alike.

The second problem? Us. The media. Anyone who decides that the young Manning isn't good enough. Eli made a strong case for himself however in 2007, taking down the mighty (and undefeated Patriots) in Super Bowl XLII.

5. Jorge Posada, Catcher for the New York Yankees

Somewhat of a dark horse on the list, Posada has poured his heart and soul into the Yankees organization for 15 years. Many things about Posada fly under the radar however, things like being the Valedictorian of his college class, being one of only two Yankees catchers (Yogi Berra) to hit 30 home runs in a Yankees uniform.

Posada carries numbers that could get him into the Hall of Fame. He has caught one perfect game, won four World Series rings, five all-star selections, and also brought home four Silver Slugger awards. The shining spot on his life however may be the Jorge Posada Foundation, which gives money to families whose children have craniosynostosis.

4. Nate Robinson, Point Guard for the New York Knicks

Being 5'9'' poses some problems in life. You probably won't be on the floor for too many concerts, and you don't want cabinets in the kitchen that are too high. Jumping over guys that are 6' 11''? No not really a problem there.

Robinson recently won his second ever Slam Dunk competition and has averaged over 18 points per game this past season, and that was even coming off the bench! He has been a favorite of new head coach Mike D'Antoni and his run n' gun offense. Hopefully KryptoNATE will be around for years to come.

3. Jose Reyes, Shortstop for the New York Mets

Jose Reyes is not only one of the most beloved New York Mets players in recent history, he may be one of the most loved in all of baseball. Reyes won fans over early with his lightning speed, and revered dedication to the game.

Reyes has already led the NL in triples and steals three times, and been selected to two all-star games. Jose is known for doing everything in quite a thrilling fashion. After collecting the all-time lead for Mets stolen bases, he proceeded to steal third on the following pitch, and then scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by this man...

2. David Wright, Third Basemen for the New York Mets

With all the things that Wright has done for the Mets, including 120+ home runs by the time he was 26 years old, and also sniping over 90 bases, none could be better than his catch against the San Diego Padres on August 9th, 2005.

At PETCO park, Brian Giles hit a bloop single over Wright's head. Looking up and running towards left field, David kept his eye on the ball the whole way down, snatching it before crashing to the turf...barehanded.

1. Derek Jeter, Shortstop for the New York Yankees

Even a Yankees fan like myself is quite aware that Jeter's wonder years are behind him, but he still holds the key to New York City. Jeter is the epitome of what it means to be a New York Yankee. An attractive guy, tremendous player, and always a classy guy.

Jeter has done it all on the field as well. He will soon eclipse 3,000 hits, has already batted in 1,000 runs, and has wracked up a career average of .316. Jeter was taken out in the ninth inning of the final game at Yankee Stadium and given a standing ovation and curtain call that lasted around five minutes.

Returning to the mound with his teammates surrounding him, Derek gave a farewell speech, something he later said he spent 'little to no time preparing". Derek Jeter will always be a Yankee, and will one day become a pinstripe legend...

Who am I kidding? He already is one.

Honorable Mentions

Justin Tuck, DE, New York Giants
Andy Petitte, SP, New York Yankees
Scott Gomez, C, New York Rangers

Your thoughts?

It doesn't take a genius to know that almost no New York fan will have the exact same list, and I hope you leave a comment with who you think should've made the list that didn't.

Also, be sure to check out the article that inspired this one, done by a fantastic Bleacher Reporter, Mike Kent.

All-Time New York Giants: No. 10, Captain Manning

A while back, an idea came to me: Make a list of the top 10 players in New York Giants football history.

As you can clearly see, my ideas don't stay bottled up for very long. Kicking things off at number ten is current Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

Acquired

Eli Manning was drafted by the San Diego Chargers with the first overall pick in the 2004 Draft, but was soon involved in one of the most influential draft-day trades in Giants history.

After he spoke with Chargers head honchos, it was clear that Manning didn't want to play for San Diego, and the Giants dealt away Philip Rivers and two picks that would later become Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding to acquire the former Ole Miss Rebel.

Many people asked if this was a good move or one that would cost the organization down the road. Five years later, it is clear that it was a bold, risky, yet wise move by the Giants organization.

Rivers, Merriman, and Kaeding have a combined four Pro Bowls, but Rivers has none to Manning's one. Let's be honest, though: Do Pro Bowls matter?

No. Do Super Bowl rings matter? Yes.

Super Bowl MVP's? Not so much, but who doesn't want a little ice cream with their cake?

Through the Years

Manning sat for most of his rookie year before getting the nod in 2005 after Kurt Warner voided the final year of his deal.

Eli showed flashes of brilliance in a 350-yard, two-touchdown game against the team he snubbed on draft day; a four-TD game at home against the Rams; and a touchdown toss to Amani Toomer with only eight seconds left in Week Six's game.

Overall, his first year as a starter was a success, as Manning finished in the top five for passing yards and touchdowns while leading the No. 3-ranked offense in the NFL.

However, the following year proved to be much harder, as injuries to the offensive line and Eli himself proved difficult to overcome. A second-half collapse pushed him down all the way to 18th in the league in Quarterback Rating for 2006.

But then, the 2007 season was something special: It was Michael Strahan's last season with the Giants and his first Super Bowl ring. And no Giants fan will ever forget Eli leading the G-Men past the Buccaneers in the opening round of the Playoffs, going 20-of-27 on his attempts with two touchdowns, leading the team to a 24-14 victory.

The second round was even better, as Big Blue avenged two regular-season losses to the division rival Dallas Cowboys. The Giants became the first NFC team in history to beat the No. 1 seed in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Now, most people think I'm crazy (other Giants fans included) when I tell them that my favorite Manning performance of all time was against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship.

All I can say about this game is that if you can get your hands on a copy of this game, treasure it. Nothing better than a backyard brawl that went into OT and was won on a field goal.

The rest of course, is history, as the New York Giants went on to beat the New England Patriots in the most-watched event in the history of the United States of America. Manning captured MVP honors and will forever be remembered for his late-game heroics, which included a 30-yard bomb to David Tyree.

Outlook for 2009

With Plaxico Burress departing in the offseason, the Giants have been rumored to be seeking a trade with the Cleveland Browns or Arizona Cardinals for Braylon Edwards or last year's phenom, Anquan Boldin.

Knowing the Giants organization, there will be a great move made that will only further young Manning's career. And I know we all plan on sticking around and watching him toss the pigskin for years to come.

Fantasy Baseball Super Stuffed Weekly Recap: Week I

As the first article, in what I expect and hope to be a very long running and successful series, it would be a good idea to fill you in on what this article will deliver week in and week out.

First off, I will be ranking the best hitters and pitchers of the week and will also do it by National or American League for the people who play in NL/AL Only Leagues.

Toss in some waiver wire suggestions and a random assortment of facts, and you have yourself a solid guide to hopefully open up your eyes to the fantasy baseball week that just flew by. Not wanting to waste precious time, let's dive in (Stats are from April 5-April 12).

American League Batter of the Week:

Miguel Cabrera, 1B/3B, Detroit Tigers: .520, 5 Runs, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 1.546 OPS

Quite contrary to the beginning of last season, Miggy went ballistic in the first week of the 2009 season. Reeling off four multi-hit games in the first six and capping it all off with a stellar Friday against the Rangers, going 3-5 with a Grand Slam and six RBI.

Looking Forward: The Tigers get to square off against the Chi Sox for a three game series in Detroit and then travel to Seattle for three more. Cabrera is hitless against Felix Hernandez in only two at bats, and hasn't fared any better against Bedard (1-6 in his career) but has hit Carlos Silva very well thus far (6-15).

Honorable Mention: Evan Longoria, Adam Lind, Kevin Youkilis

National League Batter of the Week:

Emilio Bonifacio, 2B, Florida Marlins: .500, 9 Runs, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 4 SB, 1.232 OPS

If I wanted to give this to two people, Albert Pujols certainly would've shared it with Emilio, but I figured I would give the kid his dues.

Bonafacio opened the season with five straight multi-hit games, and three of those bouts ended with him notching three or more hits. Bonifacio will certainly help in your league’s steals category and give an added boost to your average, if he continues to smack the ball the way he has.

Looking Forward: Thus far, the Marlins are a surprising 5-1 and look to pile the W's on when they travel to Atlanta and Washington for a three game series. How will Emilio fare? Your guess is as good as anybody's.

As far as projected starting pitchers go, Bonifacio has only faced Derek Lowe six times, only grabbing one hit. The Nationals, however, have been a favorite of the young stud, as he has gone a combined 3-5 against Scott Olsen and Daniel Cabrera.

Honorable Mention: Albert Pujols, Christian Guzman, Ryan Theroit

American League Pitcher of the Week:

Kevin Millwood, SP, Texas Rangers: 14.0 IP, 1-0, 11 K, 0.64 ERA, 0.72 WHIP

Millwood opened up the season in a position not many would want. He squared off against the reigning AL Cy Young, Cliff Lee. To many, including myself, it was quite shocking how dominant Millwood has been, and even more surprising, how weak Lee has been. Kevin went a strong seven innings, only giving up one run, while striking out five.

Millwood's second start was even more dominant, traversing all the way through the seventh inning, while only letting through four hits and knocking down six. Leaving with a four run lead, Millwood would have his win escape him when the Tigers reeled off six runs in the eighth inning.

Looking Forward: His next scheduled start is Saturday against the Kansas City Royals, whom he is 4-2 against in the last three years. Should be another solid outing.

Honorable Mention: Josh Beckett, Jeremy Guthrie, Edwin Jackson

National League Pitcher of the Week:

Josh Johnson, SP, Florida Marlins: 15.2 IP, 2-0, 15 K, 0.57 ERA, 0.83 WHIP

With an amazingly low ERA, and a ridiculous K:BB ratio (15:1), what more could be said about Josh Johnson. He out-dueled Johan Santana, while going a full nine innings and struck out seven? Get outta here. Sat down eight against the Nationals and only went 7 2/3? Yeah, hes pretty damn good so far.

Johnson is a stellar 9-1 since returning from Tommy John surgery, and looks to add to his dominance this season after two great starts.

Looking Forward: Johnson makes his next scheduled start against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. In seven career starts against the Nats, Johnson has only lost one time, and only went two innings and allowing one run in the shortened outing. Johnson should cruise to 3-0.

Honorable Mention: Derek Lowe, Kyle Lohse, Jake Peavy

Waiver Wire Wonders:

Have an empty spot on the roster due to someone going on the DL or just need someone to replace the flat tire on your all-star squad? Look for these guys.

Christian Guzman (Wash, SS): Went 5-5 on Monday night and was already batting .400+
Nelson Cruz (Tex, OF): Already cranked out three homers, and is batting a solid .300
Ryan Church(NYM, OF): While lacking Runs and RBI early on, it won't last long in that powerful New York lineup, plus, he's hitting .450+, so who can complain?
Marco Scutaro (Tor, INF): Already racked up an incredible ten runs, and five RBI, while still delivering a solid average
Kyle Lohse(STL, SP): Two solid starts already, but beware: next scheduled start up against rival Cubs
Fernando Rodney(Det, RP): When Detroit wins games, he closes them...and throws in a couple K’s for good measure

Random Ramblings:

What's better than some completely random thoughts, that might actually offer some sort of weird assistance? Nothing.

    * Kevin Gregg has been getting shelled. Pinella will no longer use him for more than one inning of work
    * Max Scherzer, Scott Baker, and Brandon Webb, are all scheduled to make their first starts this coming week
    * The top five pitchers in terms of K's, Johan Santana leads with 20, but also has pitched less innings than the other four
    * David Aardsma is leading the saves race for Seattle, and a whopping 97.4 percent of ESPN Leagues have him available for pickup
    * Chien Ming-Wang and Jon Lester will be fine
    * Kevin Youkilis is on complete fire, and we could see two years of a Boston MVP
    * If your in a league that penalizes for batters striking out, consider dropping Mark DeRosa or Casey Blake, who are a combined 7-50 with 22 strikeouts

Extra Innings:

I look forward to reading your comments and getting insight on what you might like to see in future articles, until then, good luck to each and every fantasy league you might be in!

Must Watch Fantasy Game of the Week:

A pitcher's duel between Kyle Lohse and Carlos Zambrano, could turn into a slugfest with the bats of Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick up against Alfonso Soriano and Derrek Lee. Add in the spice of a Friday night, and you have yourself a perfect ballgame.

New York Giants' Offseason Task No. 4: Do Something Useful...Please?

This is No. 4 in a running series of Giants offseason antics
Article One: Resigning and Releasing
Article Two: Plaxico Burress and Anquan Boldin
Article Three: James Laurinaitis

First off, let me apologize for missing so much time on Bleacher Report as of late. I am currently getting prepared for college and have a lot of family stuff going on, but I should be able to continue this ongoing series, to keep all the G-Men fans entertained.

So let's jump right into these random ramblings and such.

Why oh Why

I recently had the chance to attend ESPN The Weekend with a very good friend of mine and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my entire life. Having connections in the upper tier of ESPN's marketing staff, we acquired VIP passes and got to hang out with multiple athletes [including Brandon Jacobs!].

The one downside? It was hear that I found that the New York Giants had turned down Derrick Wards offer to stay with the team. I must ask, why Jerry Reese? Why?

Derrick Ward was the spark plug the Giants had been missing, and single-handedly destroyed the Carolina Panthers to give Big Blue the number one seed, and we let him go just as easily as he came.

Trading for a WR

Is there anyone hear who DOESN'T want the Giants to trade for Anquan Boldin or Braylon Edwards? Anybody? I didn't think so.

Don't get me wrong, releasing Plaxico Burress was a decision that was hard to make for Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin, and I can't say that I was too surprised.

However usually, from what I've seen, when you release a star player whom happens to be your young quarterback's favorite target, most teams like to replace them with a different big target.

It just so happens that Braylon Edwards and Anquan Boldin are both clearly available from their respective teams.

At first, the Cleveland Browns wanted Steve Smith, our talented slot receiver and third down machine, but since then the Big Blue have acquired an extra third round pick as compensation for their losses from last years free agency.

You would have to be crazy to not think that the Giants could get either of these pro-bowlers for the right price.

Giants + Draft = ???

Now I know what you're thinking. If we don't get a new wideout then we could always draft one right? God I hope not.

Wide receivers in one of those positions that we will most certainly not get any help from in the coming season [See: Mario Manningham, Sinorice Moss]. Then again, why not deal some of those extra picks to the Cincinnati Bengals who could most certainly use them, and take Michael Crabtree?

Whatever the organization finally does decide to do, I think the 2009 NFL season should be a very interesting one indeed.

One Hundred Shadows

In the wake of Alex Rodriguez's admission to steroids, the questions are already buzzing about what will become of the 103 other players' names who appeared on the same list as A-Rod's.

There are certainly plenty of different stances that television, radio, and journalism personalities have taken, but we all know they will have no final say over what truly happens to this list.

As with most decisions, pros and cons lie on either fence you choose to hop over and not any decision is a "be-all, end-all", by any means.

Either way, it will have to be dealt with eventually and offering a personal opinion is all one can do right now.

Why the 103 Names Should Be Released

As a Yankees fan, my answer to this is easy. Rodriguez got screwed, so should everyone else. Now, wait a second, I know what you're thinking. A-Rod did take steroids of his own accord, something he has now openly admitted, but that doesn't mean his name should have ever been leaked.

Eight percent of MLB that season failed the same test that A-Rod did, which makes it much easier to look at through this microscope. You have 100 friends, and not only all your friends, but your entire workplace finds out that you have been stealing company money for three years. Now, everyone looks at you like they looked at the last eight or nine guys that just got booted for the same problem.

All of a sudden, it's revealed that eight more people are doing the same thing. Well, well, well. Who could possibly go to the associate Hall of Fame with some suspects still out there. Jimmy didn't do it, but he had to wait an extra two years because he worked with you guys.

OK, so it wasn't the greatest of analogies, but you catch my drift. I now look at everyone like they're guilty because of what has now been revealed. Pujols? Probably not...but can you really be so sure? Not anymore. As A-Rod put it, the truth will set you free. And in more ways than one.

Who will it free exactly? The fans. When the shadows are drawn into the light, then, for at least a few days, there will be nothing that was official that the public doesn't know. It will allow to me to kick back on the recliner, and watch a classic Sox-Yankees game without wondering who's a clean guy or a guy who made a terrible mistake. The last thing I want to do this season is see Adam Dunn blast one of his signature shots over a right field fence, and not be able to enjoy it as much as last season.

Another part of me, though small, says that one is enough. Its awkward and downright senseless when the same people who are saying the documents never should have been released, and that Rodriguez had his privacy taken away, are so quick to want to do it 103 more times. Does that confuse anyone other than myself?

The 'Steroid Era' in Major League Baseball will never be something that is completely known, or even fully understood, but the people who have the power to change the league for the best, and to clean up what was once a highly-regarded game of mental and physical prowess, should not abuse the power that they have been given.

If the names are in fact, never released, than it will ALWAYS be something that is brought up from time to time, and the last thing any die-hard fan wants is to hear more anchors and ex-athletes talk about steroids instead of the no-hitter that was thrown the week prior.

My one wish, though, is that Alex Rodriguez does what we all know he can, which is to spread the word of his mistakes and teach children all across the country what is right and wrong. The youth are the most influential people who will hear of this A-Rod exploit and are the ones that need the most directing.

One last thing. Remember that Alex Rodriguez made a mistake. A mistake that he knew he made, and one that he has not tried to run from since. We all have made plenty of mistakes in our lives and I would bet my life that if someone put $252 million in your face you may be inclined to make even bigger ones.

New York Giants Offseason Task No. 3: Getting To Know James Laurinaitis

This is No. 3 in a running series of Giants offseason antics
Article One: Resigning and Releasing
Article Two: Plaxico Burress and Anquan Boldin

First of all, let me start out by saying that I am extremely pleased with the comments, and the attention that this series has gotten from the Giants community.

I hope you enjoy reading these articles as much as I do writing them.

Now, it's on to business as usual.

The reason this article came to be is because the first mock draft that actually matters was released last week. Draft analyst for ESPN, Mel Kiper Jr. has the New York Giants taking James Laurinaitis from Ohio State University with the 29th pick in the NFL Draft.

What better way to get ready for next season than with an in-depth look at what may be our future inside linebacker?

James Laurinaitis-Ohio State University-Senior-ILB

In high school, James was a star two-sport athlete who could've gone pro in the NHL as a second- to fourth-round draft pick, but was overlooked because his obvious talent was football.

Laurinaitis won his home state of Minnesota's Defensive Player of the Year for high school football, and was recruited to OSU as only the second football recruit from Minnesota since coach Sid Gillman back in the thirties.

James battled his way to second place on the depth chart of his freshman year, backing up Bobby Carpenter, now a LB with the Dallas Cowboys. After Carpenter broke his leg against rival Michigan, Laurinaitis saw considerable playing time.

Getting the start in 2006, he led the team in tackles with 115 tackles and five interceptions and also reeled in four sacks. He was rewarded for his hard work very nicely with the Nagurski Award as the nation's top defensive player—but that wasn't all. James also won the Big Ten Defensive player of the year.

Though 2006 was a great season, 2007 was the year that Laurinaitis became the future first-round pick that he is today. James took control of the OSU defense and became what Jim Tressel would call one of the best defensive players he had ever coaches. Laurinaitis finished with 121 tackles, and won the Butkus award for the Nation's Top Linebacker, and was named the Big Ten Defensive player of the year for the second straight season.

After a down year in 2008, and the breakout year's from the nation's top LB's, Wake Forest's Aaron Curry, and USC's Rey Maualuga, Laurinaitis' draft stock dropped a tad. Which, If I do say so for myself, is a great thing for the Giants.

But don't take my word for it, James would tell you himself.

Youtube. The Animal. James Laurinaitis.

Written By Travis Rand, NYG, and NFL Bleacher Reporter
Travis' Archive can be found here

New York Giants Offseason Task No. 2: Plaxico Burress and Anquan Boldin

This is No. 2 in a running series of Giants offseason antics
Article One: Resigning and Releasing

I would like to thank everybody who read and commented on my first article, and I hope you enjoy this one all the same.

So, on to business as usual. I'm not going to rehash the entire Plaxico Burress incident but let me remind everybody that what Plaxico Burress did to the Giants this year was far worse than I had originally expected.

From the very first game of the season, I honestly expected Burress to have a blowout year. I thought the new deal would make him pleased, and hopefully allow him to play through the season without any ankle pain, something that bothered him a lot in 2007.

In the season opener, a Thursday night game against the Washington Redskins, Plax reeled in 11 catches for over 125 yards. After that, it was all downhill. Burress managed to grab some touchdowns here and there, a nice six catch game one week, but then three sub-par performances came after that.

Then of course, he decided to accidentally shoot himself in the leg. Stupid? Hell yes! I'm not going to make excuses for the guy, but lets back off and forget about it. We can't change anything, and neither can he.

The only thing Burress can change? How he responds after what the Giants decide to do with him...some possibilities are listed below.

1. The New York Giants Do Not Keep Plaxico Burress
This is where the article becomes a slight branch-off of sorts. If the Giants do not keep Burress and also do not make any major roster changes from now until the 2009 season, then we would essentially be stuck in a rut.

Though that case is highly unlikely, getting rid of Burress—something I would like to say I am strongly decide against—would decimate us. Possibly looking at an aging Toomer as our number one receiver. Domenik Hixon, a speedy but unreliable wide out, would be flanking him. With Steve Smith, the young stud from USC, in the slot.

I would be as uncomfortable as I have ever been.

Thankfully, it will never happen. I believe if we don't keep Plaxico, it will not come in the form of dropping him. We would lose a small amount of money, though recover a large amount of his bonus, it would be much more worth it to trade Burress for draft picks. Sounds crazy? Someone is always willing to take a 6' 6" receiver.

2. Who Could The Giants Use to Replace Plax?

In two words: Anquan Boldin

The Giants currently have a total of nine draft picks. A full count of seven that we were allocated, and then a second rounder and a fifth rounder from New Orleans.

So, you're saying we could trade our first rounder and a second rounder for Anquan Boldin?

Well, it gets a little tricky here. Not many people know, but the Saints currently have a previous deal with the New York Jets. If Jonathan Vilma, former Pro Bowl linebacker, is resigned by New Orleans, than their second round pick would go to the Jets instead.

Well, how would the Giants get their pick then?!

No need to worry, the Giants pick would be upgraded to a first round pick in 2010. Which could flip-flop a lot of things, but all in all I don't know what the G-Men would do with it.

But know this my good friend. Jerry Reese is ready to make a splash. We all know he doesn't like to surrender draft picks, but I honestly feel like the Giants are going to make a huge push for "Q". Something we should ALL be happy with.

New York Giants Offseason Task No. I: Who To Re-Sign...and Release

First of all, an apology is in order. As the New York Giants community leader, I take it very seriously and try to do my best whenever I can.

I have been next to non-existent the last month and plan on making up for it very much so in the coming ones.

I recently got invited to accompany a very good friend of mine to Orlando, Florida for ESPN The Weekend. Every sports fans dream in other words. His aunt, the vice president of ESPN, scored us a free five star hotel, and exclusive V.I.P. passes.

For us to have to save the money to go, we had to sell of a bunch of old football and baseball cards, and in the past three weeks have amassed over $800. I feel that it was time to return to doing what I love so much. Writing about Big Blue.

The New Series

I wanted to be able to return to form and decided to start an off-season program in which every day, or couple days [certainly not a full month] I will cover a different topic, New York Giants related.

The topics will range from potential draft picks, free agent signing, contract extensions, and trade partners, and I may even occasionally throw in a wild card topic. A "What If" type of article. i hope you return to see what else has been added and I thank all of you for your patience.

Who Should The Giants Re-sign?

The New York Giants this year, don't have nearly as many upcoming free agents as last year, and we get to keep almost our entire core of players. Instead of just ranting on, you can check out that exact list below.

Giants' Unrestricted Free Agents Following 2008 Season

RB: Brandon Jacobs
RB: Derrick Ward
WR: Amani Toomer
CB: Corey Webster
S: James Butler

So who exactly should we resign? Let's put it this way, Brandon Jacobs WILL be a Giant next year. Why? Because Derrick Ward won't. I mean, let's be logical here. Our BACKUP running back just ran for over 1,000 yards, and had over 400 receiving.

Ward is going to want starter money, which would be fine...If he was going to be our starter. I'm really not too worried though. Jacobs will be signed again, and we have Ahmad Bradshaw and future third string Danny Ware.

Obviously not much is expected of him, but Ware will be in his third year out of Georgia, and is six foot one, and weighs in at 210 pounds. Imagine pounding everybody for a half with Jacobs, burning past them with Ahmad Bradshaw, and crushing them again with a Jacobs/Ware combo. Sounds scary.

Corey Webster is another who I believe will return. He will play opposite Aaron Ross, and anchor one of the best defenses in the NFL. James Butler on the other hand, will most likely not be kept, and I'm ok with that. Kenny Phillips is coming on well, and Sammy Knight will be swapped around often with rookie Michael Johnson from ASU.

Amani Toomer. One of the best Giants players to have throw on the blue and white. Toomer will be kept for a quite small price if he chooses to return next year, something I definitely think he will do.

Who Do The Giants Let Go?

Besides stating the obvious, Derrick Ward, as previously stated is a goner, and I don't even think we throw any attempt to keep him, the money just wouldn't be worth it when it could be spent elsewhere...Like a linebacker core.

There are very few players I wouldn't mind seeing the Giants part ways with, but losing some of our WR's wouldn't exactly leave us depleted.

People may want to start bracing themselves for the release of David Tyree. Its not something I particularly want to see, but it will happen in the coming year or two. Same with Sam Madison, who I don't think will be missed in our young and fresh secondary.

Biggest Advantage in the Offseason?
David Diehl, Kareem McKenzie, Shaun O' Hara, Chris Snee, Rich Seubert. Enough said.

We return one of the best offensive lines of the NFL and don't need to worry about resigning any of them. Definitely the biggest advantage Big Blue has going into the 2009 season.

What to Look Out For!
I will soon be doing an article for the free agents that the Giants may be exploring. Please stay tuned!!

Part One: New York Giants Offseason Tasks, NFL Draft and Resignings

OK let's be honest.

Every single one of us has been thinking at least once or twice, who the Giants might draft in April 2009. Hopefully we get the 32nd pick again and turn another star into a "Big Blue Superstar"

Since Jerry Reese's takeover, everyone we seem to draft is a diamond in the rough, just waiting to be dug up and thrown on the gridiron. In 2006, we acquired the talented Barry Cofield, Mathias Kiwanuka, and Gerris Wilkinson. In '07 we scooped up Aaron Ross, Kevin Boss, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Steve Smith.

How about the latest draft in 2008? Kenny Phillips, Terrell Thomas, and Bryan Kehl all got selected by Jerry "Draft Guru" Reese.

The way the Giants are playing right now, the NFL Drafts have been fun to watch for one reason. There are usually only one or two positions we need to hit on and there have always been so many options.

But what exactly do we need right now? Well, a better way to decide is to first look at our free agent situation.

Giants' Unrestricted Free Agents Following 2008 Season

RB: Brandon Jacobs
RB: Derrick Ward
WR: Amani Toomer
CB: Corey Webster
S: James Butler

In my opinion, the two "must signs" are the men on top. After that, I feel that Webster is definitely next in line to land a new deal.

Concerning Butler and Toomer is much different.

Butler plays a position that has been roping in huge contracts all over the place [See: Reed, Ed]. There is definitely a possibility that we lose him. If there is any upside to it, we save ourselves some cash and plug in Kenny Phillips, who has shown promise.

Amani Toomer, I think, will stay as well. Now don't get me wrong here, I love Amani Toomer. He is one of the classiest WR's in the NFL and nicest guys I have ever watched in an interview. The thing is though, why would he ever want to leave? He has been respected by the organization and is about to hit 35-years-old. I think he will take a smaller end deal for three or four years and call it good.

Draft Outlook

This next part is written with the idea that the previous actions actually DO happen.

There are four or five extremely talented line-backers in this year's draft, and I can almost guarantee you one of them will be playing for the New York Giants next year. Here are the best three.

1. Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest (Senior) No. 3 on Scouts Inc. Top 32 [First Senior] Youtube Highlight Video

2. Ray Maualuga, ILB, USC (Senior) No. 11 on Scouts Inc. Top 32 [Fourth Senior] Introducing Rey Maualuga

3. James Laurinaitis, ILB, OSU (Senior) No. 20 on Scouts Inc. Top 32 [Seventh Senior]
The Animal Unleashed

Final Thoughts
Trust me when I say this. You want to check out those videos.

If anything stood out to me, it was Curry's speed. Around 40 seconds into that video he takes a pick to the house, and he looked like he could run the 40 yard dash in 4.3, maybe even less.

It will definitely be interesting to see how the draft turns out. Expect more offseason coverage in the near future.

Most Valuable Athletes of 2008

2008. Another year another championship. Another year and another homerun to tell your kids about. Another spiral that Brett Favre gets to throw. Another stadium right next to the old one.

There were numerous sports battles going on this year and it seemed imaginable to pick the best of the best.

What you are about to see is one sport's fan's view on who were this years winners. The ones who clearly rose above the rest and kept running when others hunched over. The athletes who decided to keep swinging the bat hoping that one shot would land over the famous Yankee Facade.

Instead of limiting it to only one sport, this show will span over everything from NASCAR to Hockey. From one teenager who dominated March Madness, to the man who is better than Mark Spitz.

For each month of the year, one of these people took the spotlight, making the headline's of newspapers everywhere.

This was 2008. This was the year that would never be forgotten.
Begin Slideshow

Brandon Jacobs: The Thunder He Brings

The Giants have been on a slight decline as of late but I think for the most part it’s something they needed.

I mean, who really wants to make the playoffs with only one loss while feeling invincible? When you review the last two games—ones in which Brandon Jacobs has seen little to no action—you really get an idea of how good this football team really is.

When we took the field at the Meadowlands against the Eagles, we had the pleasure of the watching Big Blue play their worst game all year. The outcome? A six-point loss. Now correct me if I’m wrong, but when most people talk about a club's worst loss all season, it usually is a three-touchdown defeat, not a loss by only six points.

How about the beat-down in Big D? I mean, that was just horrible. No Brandon Jacobs, no protection of Eli Manning. He looked like a rag doll out there getting chewed out by the pit bull you used to avoid on the walk home. Instead of looking at this from a glance, let’s take a closer look at Brandon Jacobs and what he brings to the table.

How much of the Giants' current slump can be attributed to the health of Jacobs?

Let's put it this way: With Plaxico Burress in the lineup, there was always a safety over the top, which meant not one in the box against Jacobs. Without Plaxico Burress in the lineup, teams can throw an extra man in there, to stop the beast that is No. 27.

Without Plaxico Burress and Brandon Jacobs, we get to see eight men in the box, with every single one of them rushing towards Eli Manning. A prime example of this is the box score from Sunday night's slobber.

While the entire blame can’t be attributed to only one player, it definitely has changed the way that teams line up against the Giants.

If Brandon Jacobs is unable to go on Sunday, what changes will Big Blue have to make?

While it looks like Jacobs will be ready to go, it still is important to wrap our minds around the changes our offense will have to make. Personally, I live in Maine and we are expecting a Nor’easter that day. Now I’m not sure what images just ran through your mind, but Brandon Jacobs crushing people just ran through mine.

Without Jacobs there, and the weather as terrible as it sounds, it would be an extremely difficult day on the young shoulders of Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw.

Taking an extreme approach here, if the weather is decent, but we still lack Jacobs, then the best idea I can muster is to play Ward in every single formation.

Let me explain. Young wide outs Sinorice Moss, Mario Manningham, and Steve "Mr. Third Down" Smith are all less than six feet tall. Sounds like the perfect day to use Ward as a decoy to draw an LB out. Send Hixon on medium to long routes and voila! The middle of the field is now open to a bunch of slants. Just saying.

What's more important: Jacobs playing on Sunday and giving us a greater chance to get the No. 1 seed, or being healthy for the playoffs?

This one is a no-brainer in my opinion.

Look at it this way: Let's eliminate the "what if" game about Jacobs playing and getting re-injured. It could happen on any given Sunday.

So let’s say Brandon Jacobs plays this Sunday and the Giants are not victorious. He got his feet back under him, and remembered how it felt to get pounded.

How about Jacobs doesn't play? We win the game, then that's awesome. Or is it? Jacobs certainly wouldn't play against the "Williams Wall" in Minnesota the following week because the game would hold no value.

The Giants then have a bye the following week in the playoffs. You know what that means? When Big Blue takes the field for the division game, we would be starting a runningback who hadn't taken a hit in around a month. No thanks.

How about Jacobs playing and we win? Best case scenario right here. Jacobs gets his momentum back AND earns himself two weeks off. A win-win situation by far.

Captain Optimistic: Five Things to Take Away from the Giants Loss

Let's get RIGHT to the point with this one.

I, and I realize I may be in the majority, am almost happy that we lost yesterday.

The New York Giants played absolutely horrible football, and we STILL only lost by six points. Sure, we had a blocked field goal brought back to the house, and of course we had a pretty easy drive at the end due to the lack of care by the Philly D, but still...six isn't that bad, right?

1. When the New York Giants are fully healthy, they are nearly unstoppable

Brandon Jacobs got a little banged up, and the newly deemed starting WR Domenik Hixon had an OK, not great, OK game. I'll expect more next week against Dallas.

2. We lost to the one division team that I don't mind losing to

Dallas? Way different story. Washington? I wouldn't have wanted them to sniff out daylight. Philadelphia is a different story. They won't close the season in winning fashion and will eventually hit rock bottom in the East.

3. Manning is throwing better passes then I have ever seen

How many times yesterday did McNabb's ball hit the ground eight feet in front of a receiver? How many times did Eli's hit a WR square in the hands, even thought only half were caught? Don't need to say much more than that.

4. Gilbride needs to know when to STOP THROWING [or running idiotic plays]

When Manning started out 3-4, it looked like a solid day. Then he went 4-17... When stuff like this happens, you stop throwing the ball. The reverse call to Manningham? What in god's name was that?! I can see doing that in the nice September weather, but to take yourself out of field goal range on this windy day... Jeezum.

5. At least everyone else we wanted to lose...Lost!

Dallas? Check. Washington? Check. Carolina or Tampa? Well, someone has to lose right?

Regular Season Outlook

I think we should be fine, to be completely honest. We will rebound from this one and continue to return to form. Big game against Dallas next week, which should be a blast to watch.

After that, we have our final home game of the regular season against the Carolina Panthers, which could decide the number one seed on the NFC. Overall, I am not worried at all by this loss.

Domenik Hixon: The Perfect Replacement

I am not one to beat the dead horse, but I thought I should update everyone. Plaxico Burress will never again wear a New York Giants jersey on a professional football field.

It is a sad, tragic story of yet another stupid athlete ruining a perfect career and a history with an amazing franchise.

Instead of discussing how Burress is gone, how about we take a further look at the man replacing him: Domenik Hixon.

I'll at least come out and be honest...I will miss Plax. As a Giants fan, no one can watch him tear up as confetti plasters his jersey after catching the game-winning pass in Super Bowl XLII, and not already miss the guy.

However, I do think I could get used to Hixon. He has been primarily used as a special teams guru who is often expected to get the ball to the 30 or 40 yard line every time he returns a kickoff.

Domenik Hixon is, in fact, currently the Giants special teams champion.

What is more intriguing about DH is his big play ability. With our offensive line being able to hold up as well as it has, we have taken a surprisingly low amount of deep throws.

Don't get me wrong, though, the Giants have the No. 1 ranked rushing offense and Eli Manning currently ranks seventh in quarterback rating, therefore telling us that they are just fine taking short passes and turning them into large gains.

I think this can change, though, with the further use of Burress. Many people seem to think that when the No. 1 receiver on a team is lost to injury...or accidental shooting, that the No. 2 assumes his role.

This is incorrect. Hix and Plax both play what is called the "X," which usually means they are taller than their counterparts and possess break away speed for the big toss.

What does this all mean?

This means that the Giants are going to be fine.

Granted, we don't have the postseason experience that Plax had, or the height advantage over just about anybody in the NFL, but we do have a very suitable replacement.

What we do have is someone who wants to be making ESPN headlines; we have someone with great hands and amazing speed; we have someone who made a double take after watching him score three touchdowns in a preseason game in only one quarter.

But most of all...we have our new wide receiver.

Why the New York Giants Can Very Easily Return to the Super Bowl

OK I know what you're thinking...I'm crazy right?

I'm just like everyone else who thinks they could return. But who is actually giving facts? Here are the three reasons that I believe the Giants will return to the Super Bowl.

3. Home-Field Advantage

This might just be the biggest reason that the G-Men can return to the promise land. A very good friend of mine said it this way, "If it's 20 degrees out and the turf is ice cold...How excited are you going to be, as a safety, at the idea of trying to tackle Brandon Jacobs?"

There really isn't that much else too say besides that. I mean, last year it was the road streak, 11 in a row to be exact, that brought Big Blue to the Bowl. This year it happens to be the home win streak. They are one of only three teams in the NFL who have yet to fall at home, and that could prove vital come December and January.

2. Who Else Would Go? Honestly...Think about it for a second

While thinking about the other teams that could make the playoffs, I realized something. I don't really fear any of them. Last year for instance, was completely different. We opened up with Tampa Bay...In Tampa. Even then I was scared.

In fact, every single one of the four playoff games last year, I almost went in to thinking we would be beaten. If I did have to point out a team or two that I am scared of, it would have to be the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals. The good news? We meet both of them before the regular season is over.

1. Tom Coughlin and Steve "Spags" Spagnuolo

If there was ever a season I am totally confident in our coaches, it is this season. Spags has shown great trust in our defense, and we continue to drop quarterbacks left and right. Last week against his "teacher" Jim Johnson, we didn't even sack McNabb once, but what was the outcome?

A win of course, mainly thanks to the articulate and intelligent Coughlin, who won not only one but two great challenges. If we can make the playoffs, which I'm sure we will, these two men can at least get us to the NFC Championship, and hopefully go back-to-back as Super bowl champs.

NYG Roundtable: Top Secret Eagle's Scouting Reports; Week 10 Edition

I would like to welcome all of you who are reading this into the first ever scouting report done by four of the top writers in the New York Giants community.

The purpose of this article is to give fans like us an insight as to who they might want to look out for this Sunday night when the G-Men take on the Philadelphia Eagles.

If you have any interest as to how to become a contributor then look no further! All you have to do is write a piece of your own. Maybe you have different views than one of us, or maybe you would like to highlight a key player we may have missed.

Keep in mind we could have very easily chosen one format that we could have all followed, but I feel that by letting us all pick our own style, it gives the reader's a great opportunity to see how the top community members make their magic work.

For now however, let's take a closer look as to who Big Blue may have a little trouble with on Sunday.

The Reports

Scouting Report No.5DM: Donovan McNabb, Quarterback Extraordinaire
Author: Travis Rand

Let's not beat around the bush here... McNabb, when he is on point, is just plain scary. We know the Eagles will show up on Sunday just like the Giants will, but they have just a little bit more to play for. If Philly loses, they lose significant ground on the rest of the NFC East, which would be terrible especially when two of the teams are on bye.

Now down to the facts. Number five's stats should say enough about how he has performed thus far. He has ranked up 10 touchdowns and only four interceptions, and that was with number one and two targets, Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis out for the first half of the season. Both will suit up on Sunday night.

A key advantage in this match-up is having the opportunity to play on home turf, something Philly will enjoy. McNabb has won three out of the four games they have played there this year and surprisingly, he hasn't had to play well to pick up the W.

In his four home games, number five has four touchdowns through the air, and one on the ground. Surprisingly however, in two of those games, McNabb has not scored at all, and the Eagles are 1-1 in those contests.

So what is the "Key Matchup"? It's all in the pass rush. Tuck and Kiwi need to force McNabb to hurry his throws and force him into bad situations, which is something they are both extremely capable of.

They way to contain McNabb is for the Giants to do exactly what they have been doing all year...Forcing him to throw by stuffing the run. I think we bring the pressure all day and the outcome will be the same as the last three regular season contests, a big Giants win.

Scouting Report No.36BW: Brian Westbrook, Mr. Everything
Author: David Geller

During a segment on ESPN discussing fear, Lawrence Taylor cracked a smile and said, “I loved it when quarterbacks used to look around, trying to find out where the hell I was."

The same goes for defensive coordinators and Brian Westbrook.

The “Where’s Waldo?” reference Ron Jaworski used in chronicling how teams defend Brian Westbrook is a perfect fit. Arguably the best dual threat at running back in the game, Andy Reid positions him differently virtually every play and gives opposing defenses headaches.

The Giants are the ones faced with a killer headache this week. They can minimize the effects by a) bringing a lot of Advil, or b) stopping him. Here’s how they do the latter.

Number Crunching

Westbrook dispelled the myth that he can’t stay healthy last year by touching the ball 350 times and compiling over 2000 total yards. While Donovan McNabb struggled returning from ACL surgery, Westbrook flourished when everyone knew he was getting the ball.

Westbrook hasn’t been able to build on his 2007 campaign but he is still putting together a strong season. 600 yards of total offense while missing two games, but only two performances producing over 100 total yards of offense. His impact has still been felt, as the Eagles rank sixth in total offense, including third in passing. All of this coming despite missing their top two receivers for the bulk of the first half, and their anchor on the offensive line (Shawn Andrews).

Hist last game against the Giants was a tremendous one. He had 120 yards on the ground including the Eagles lone touchdown on the first drive. The Giants were able to hold the Eagles to 13 points because McNabb had a shaky game, but if Westbrook is able to have that much success this time around things could be a lot different.

How to Stop Brian Westbrook

You can’t stop Brian Westbrook…you can only hope to contain him. Forgive me for my misleading headline.

We all know about his unbelievable ability in the open field. When he gets to the second level, he can put his head down and bounce off a defensive back or he can use his speed and slip right by him. His instincts make that skillset even deadlier. He can read the mind of the DB and if he thinks they are expecting him to lower his shoulder, he’ll run around him, and vice-versa.

There will be times where he gets to that second level, and at that point the Giants defenders just have to run to the ball and get him down. But they will have to limit those events that he does break through.

How do they do that? First and foremost is gap discipline. This goes for you Fred Robbins. He’s putting together a stellar 2008 campaign, one that warrants a Pro Bowl berth. But the Eagles are going to try to turn his strength into the Giants kryptonite on Sunday night.

There are times where Robbins tries to shoot the gap to get to the quarterback, and blows right by the guard. If it is a pass the quarterback has no chance. However, if it is a draw, then the Giants are in trouble. Robbins would essentially take himself out of the play with this tactic and leave Westbrook the entire middle of the field to work with. Want to contain a dangerous back? Don’t give him that type of advantage half a second into the play.

Robbins is one of the more astute linemen in the league so I have faith he won’t be guilty of that too often. But he better be self-conscious of it in certain situations. It will be appropriate to use that move on third and 12…not so much on second and four.

The Giants defense plays the screens as well as any defense in the league, and that is Westbrook’s bread and butter. Odds are they’ll run that to the more inexperienced side of the Giants defensive line, so watch out Mathias Kiwanuka. If you see a clear path to the quarterback and catch a No.36 creeping behind you, drop back in coverage.

The Giants have been playing the sweeps off the corner outstanding for a year now. With a speedy back like Westbrook, the Eagles will be trying that often. Once again that goes along the lines of gap discipline. The linebackers stationed towards the middle have to stay there to take away the cut back lane, while the safeties and corners fly in to bust up the play. I have confidence they’ll be fine in that regard.

They’ll know when they’re in trouble if Westbrook is…

Getting 4-5 yards a carry, and the Eagles offensive line is getting a push early on. If he’s running strong up the middle and the Giants aren’t touching him until he is 2-3 yards down the field, it will be a long night. That’s what Jamal Lewis was doing early in the Monday Night debacle, and it wore out the Giants.

Except for Westbrook early success between the tackles opens up the entire field for him. Not only will they have to account for the outside where he is most dangerous, but up the middle too. With McNabb playing as well as he has been this season, this would allow them to move the ball at will the whole night.

Scouting Report No.10DS: DeSean Jackson, Rookie Spark-Plug
Author: David Brodian

DeSean Jackson vs Aaron Ross, Corey Webster, or any Giants corner. To me, as a Giants fan, this is the match up that scares me most for Sunday night. Not Brian Westbrook.

Although DeSean Jackson has not been a very consistent source of offense for the Eagles week in and week out, his lightning quick speed gives him the capability to break a huge play at any point of a game.

I have faith that the Giants front seven can hold Brian Westbrook in check. Why? They’ve already faced some of the league’s best rushers. Here are a few examples— Week One: Clinton Portis—23 carries for 84 yards. Week Two: Steven Jackson—13 carries for 53 yards.

However, the Giants secondary is what scares me. Aaron Ross, the Giants fastest corner, was torched so badly by Braylon Edwards that he was benched during the game. Additionally, he was burnt numerous times by 49ers rookie, Josh Morgan.

As far as putting another corner on Jackson, I am not sure that Corey Webster has enough speed to keep up with him.

So, what are the Giants to do? Here are my keys to stopping DeSean Jackson.

The Three P’s. Pressure, pressure, and pressure. The front seven MUST get to Donovan McNabb. If he has time to throw I’m not sure the Giants will be able to contain Jackson. However, if he is on the run out of the pocket or flat on his back, the Giants corners will have a much easier job.

Safety help. This will be huge for the Giants. Kenny Phillips has been great so far this year. He is big, fast, and has maybe the best closing speed in the NFL at the safety position. If he hits Jackson, DeSean might not get back up.

Zone coverage. Like I’ve been saying, I’m not sure the Giants corners can cover Jackson. Thus, man-to-man coverage will leave them exposed for a deep pass.

Stop the run. Yes, stop the run. This will greatly limit DeSean Jackson because the Giants will be able to use more zone coverage, if they know the ball will not be in Westbrook’s hands.

This will be the stiffest test the Giants face on Sunday. Let’s hope the secondary is up for it and gives a much better performance than they have against similar receivers to DeSean Jackson.

Scouting Report No.58TC: Trent Cole, Part-Time Manning Hunter
Author: Alex McVeigh

Trent Cole probably can't wait to play the Giants. His first career
interception and touchdown came at the Meadowlands, where he helped
the McNabb-less Eagles defeat Big Blue.

Now, he has a chance to make a big difference in this game.

The reason Eli Manning has been so effective this year is that he's
finally had some time to make his decisions, and when you team up
time, a laser-rocket arm, and as many weapons as New York has, that's
how he beats you.

Because, let's face it: Eli Manning is still Eli Manning. He might
have the confidence that only a Super Bowl ring can get you, but he
still is the same person. And who's to say he won't get rattled and
throw stupid picks if the pressure is on?

So the defensive line is huge for the Eagles, and with every action,
there is a reaction. The Giants must account for Cole. This could mean
doubling him with some combination of Kevin Boss and David
Diehl/Kareem McKenzie.

However, putting Kevin Boss on pass protection takes away from what he
offers on the receiving end, especially in the red zone. And red zone
offense has proven to separate the men from the boys in the NFC East;
just ask the 'Skins.

If th G-Men want to have a chance against this monster, as well as
against the Eagles in general, they need to establish the run. That
way, the defense is worn down, and they've got three running backs in
which to play with.

Can Trent Cole be stopped? Absolutely. Whether he will be is another
story entirely.

The Final Word

First off, let me thank the three men who I had the honor of working with, and without them, this article would be next to nothing. They all have fantastic writing skills and I am happy to be part of this roundtable, and look forward to writing for it week in and week out.

I hope this gives you a great insight on who the Giants need to key in on this Sunday night at Philly.

'Til next time...GO BIG BLUE!

NFC [B]East: Fighting Amongst Themselves

First of all let me apologize for a misleading title.

Every single game that all four of these elite teams play is going to be important, interesting, and a downright slobber-knocker.

What games truly matter though? I decided to take a look at three contests that have blossomed on the horizon and are slowly approaching go time. The winners of these games becomes one step closer to capturing the ever-elusive NFC East title, and creeps even nearer to the mighty Lombardi Trophy.

No.3: New York Giants AT Philadelphia Eagles [Week 10]

Why this game is more important than any other

Simply put, the winner of this game gains ground on essentially every other division rival, as the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins are on a bye this same week.

What a Giants win could mean

If Big Blue can pull one out in Philly [Manning has yet to lose there] then they dispel the myth that can only beat up on lesser teams. A win at Philly would make them 3-0 in their last three contests, with wins AT Pittsburgh, Dallas at the Meadowlands, and at Philly.

It would also almost assure them a division spot as they would not be able to finish any worse than 9-7, and have a full two game lead on the ever resilient Washington Redskins.

What an Eagles win could mean

The Eagles may be 3-0 in their last three games, but they had the honor of beating up on San Francisco and the decimated Seattle Seahawks. A win would be huge and they would continue to climb the ladder and pull themselves to within one game of the Skins.

It would do even more for their chemistry as a team. To finally beat the Giants with Manning at the helm in Lincoln Financial would prove to the entire league that this team has something to fight for.

No.2: Dallas Cowboys AT Washington Redskins [Week 11]

Why this game is more important than any other

I feel that an extremely suitable answer for this would simply be: Tony Romo returns. The Cowboys lost the first one by only two points and are looking to rebound from a horrible loss to the G-Men.

What a Dallas win would mean

Big D has been without Big T for their past three games and went to a dismal 1-2 in those contests. It hasn't been pretty at all, especially in the media. Terrell Owens was recently quoted as saying "We kind of gave in after the first two weeks". Not exactly something you want your "Best" WR to go around saying.

A Dallas win here saves their season, I honestly believe that and you should too. They will drop even further in the division this week, regardless of a Philly win or Giants win. If they lose to the Redskins, and the Giants and Eagles dispose of Baltimore and Cincy, then their season will truly be a failure.

What a Redskins win would mean

The last time we saw Jason Campbell, he was being hit from whichever Steeler's defender blasted through the line. The Skins will need to do a better job at protecting Campbell if they want to win this game.

I don't see the former being a problem. The Cowboys defense fails greatly in comparison to the Pittsburgh Steelers and a win would do two things for Washington. The most important proving that they can rebound from a loss with a win, something they have already done twice. The second? Have the satisfaction of burying the Dallas season.

No.1: Philadelphia Eagles AT Washington Redskins [Week 16]

Why this game is more important than any other

Even though the final game of the season for Philly is against Dallas, I don't believe that Dallas will stay competitive and in contention for that long. This game is essentially for a spot in the playoffs.

What a Eagles win could mean

As stated above, this game could very well determine a playoff spot. With the NFC South performing at such a high level, the NFC East will not get two wild card spots. For sake of argument, say the Giants stay on top and clinch the East in the next couple weeks, then only one of these teams will get that critical spot in the post-season.

I expect to be able to sit back and enjoy a classic battle of NFC East rivals, and enjoy the results no matter what they may be.

What a Redskins win could mean

The Redskins had their tougher half of the schedule already pass them by and they did tremendously in that span, going 6-3 with losses to the Steelers, Giants, and the lowly Rams. A win here, like Philly, would almost lock in a playoff spot.

Jim Zorn could very well be in line for Coach of The Year if he can secure a nice playoff berth and I think that's exactly what will happen.

Season Outlook

The Giants may have a drastically hard remaining schedule [their last 10 opponents had a winning percentage above .500] but I am confident that they secure the NFC East title.

The games listed here should be extremely crucial in how the wild card gets dealt this year. Should be a fantastic second half. One that all football fans will be able to enjoy.

Justin Tuck + Mathias Kiwanuka = Trouble

Pushing aside some old newspapers and magazines, I quietly kept to myself in the bustling break room of my supermarket job (17-year-old boys need money somehow).

Being congratulated on a Week Seven victory over the 49ers was nothing exactly special. I mean...we're supposed to win those ones anyway.

A buddy of mine, who happens to root for the hometown Pats, asked me for a prediction concerning the Giants and the postseason. I knew that we had the toughest second half schedule in the NFL and took a look at our upcoming games. We travel to Pittsburgh, host rival Dallas, and then go to Philly on primetime.

Even with our tough games following those three, it seemed like a prediction simple enough. I grinned as I told him, as though I wasn't even confident with the words that were coming out of my mouth, "We win two out of the next three...we win the NFC East"

Thank you Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka.

Strength at the End

Last year, as sweat dripped from the brow of many Giants fans, it was quite saddening to hear that Michael Strahan had announced his retirement.

While it was, of course, depressing and hard to imagine a Big Blue team without the gap-toothed warrior, many of us realized the team had promising end Justin Tuck waiting in the winds.

Then Osi Umenyiora went down. Nothing hurt more than hearing that over a radio. The media had a field day with that one. Would Strahan come back? Would the Giants regret not going for Jason Taylor?

I was not surprised at all when Mike didn't come back, and why should he? The man played for 15 years and did it all, including winning the Super Bowl in his final year, something not many have done.

As for Jason Taylor, I wasn't interested in someone who had just two or three years left in him anyway.

I was extremely pleased, however, that Boston College standout Mathias Kiwanuka would be moving back to his favorite position at defensive end. The result could not have been better.

Since moving back to defensive end, Kiwi has torn it up and that has often freed up, Tuck as well. Don't take my word for it though, the numbers say it all.

Justin Tuck: 36 tackles, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, one interception, one TD

Mathias Kiwanuka: 24 tackles, six sacks, one forced fumble

Rest of the Season

While the NFC East is far from wrapped up, it is much easier to sift through the pile with ends like Tuck and Kiwi.

I honestly think that they could both end the season with 10-12 sacks, and that is saying a lot with how "decimated" our defense was after we lost Strahan and Umenyiora.

It's not like the New York media was ever going to be kind, but it always feels nice to prove them wrong yet again.

Now just imagine what 2009 is going to be like with Osi back... I know... It IS scary...

Mid-Way Point: Five Things We Know About The New York Giants

While many writers this week are re-capping the Steelers game [Fantastic] or looking forward to the best game of a Giants fan's season [Welcoming "Big D" back to the Big Apple], I decided to stray from the norm and discuss what we have learned about the defending champs though the first half of the season.

1. Eli Manning Has More Confidence Than Many Realized

Many people thought the four games that the Giants played in the postseason last year could potentially boost Manning's confidence. Boy, were they wrong.

It rocketed Eli's confidence and pocket presence. Without the three interceptions in the game at Cleveland, Eli only has had one interception in the six other games. If he can continue this, we could see some second half magic.

2. Any One Member of the Offensive Line Could Make the Pro-Bowl

The New York Giants have not had a lineman make the Pro-Bowl since 2001. It's a stat that really surprised me, but thankfully, I think it changes this year.

It was quite a show in Pittsburgh watching Big Ben hit the ground 10+ times, with five of them on sacks. Half the time, I can't even recall if Manning was even touched during his games. I won't even get started on their run blocking... Alright Fine I will...

3. Earth, Wind, and Fire Will Continue Dominance in the Second Half

The Giants coined this term when talking about our three elite running backs, Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, and Ahmad Bradshaw.

When you have over three running backs averaging a total of five yards a carry, and one of them with close to twenty receptions [18, Derrick Ward], then you should be in pretty good shape the rest of the way.

4. If it is Third Down, There is a 90% Chance Steve Smith Will Get the Ball

Steve Smith currently has 29 receptions and 299 yards. One stat that can not be found on many stat sheets is the one that Smith is perfect in—third downs.

Smith has been Eli Manning's favorite target on third down by far. If he can continue the dominance, we could be looking at 60 catches, 600+ yards, and maybe even his first NFL touchdown.

5. Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka are Scary Good

People knew that Tuck was going to continue dominance last year, but that was hindered by Umenyiora going down. Since then however, Tuck has been an animal, on pace to get more than ten sacks...again.

Mathias Kiwanuka was also a question mark being inserted into his old role of defensive end. But boy did he break out against the Steelers, getting three sacks and a forced fumble.

Rest of the Year

It should be a great second half for the Giants and they have some tough opponents coming up. Their eight remaining games are against teams that all have a winning record, but rest assured when this team DOES make the playoffs, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Giants Topple Niners: Three Studs, Two Duds, and One Surprise

The New York Giants improved to an NFC East best, 5-1, after defeating the San Francisco '49ers on Sunday.

It was quite an impressive game all around for Big Blue, but let us take a closer look at some studs, a few duds, and some things that probably surprised a lot of us.

The Studs

Justin Tuck, Defensive End

Tuck was a force to be reckoned with for the entire game, and exploded in the second half. J-Tuck finished with two sacks on quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, and forced a fumble on both of them. Games like this make me wonder how ridiculous we would be with Umenyiora on the other end...

Brandon Jacobs, Running Back

Jacobs put two into the endzone to give him six in the last four games. He put 79 yards up on the ground with only 17 carries, for a solid 4.1 yards per carry. He seems to be one of the few consistent members of the offense right now. Look for him to hit paydirt even more in the coming weeks.

Michael Johnson, Safety

Johnson was the bright spot for the defense on Sunday, and had his best game since being drafted from Arizona in the seventh round of last year's draft. Johnson finished with three solo tackles, seven assisted, and most importantly, two interceptions for 18 yards. Look for Johnson to secure even MORE playing time after this week.

The Duds

Eli Manning, Quarterback

Though Manning didn't throw any picks, his day overall was, in my opinion, sub-par at best. A completion percentage of 51.6 is nothing to brag about, and trust me, there were plenty of opportunities for the Niners to make plays, especially with four swatted balls at the line.

If there is one thing that made Manning look bad, it was his love connection with Burress. He needs to realize there are other targets on this talented offense.

Plaxico Burress, Wide Receiver

Burress, like Manning, had a very wishy-washy game. Racking in a TD was obviously the highlight, as one of his three catches. He couldn't seem to find separation from top CB, Nate Clements.

Burress will have another tough matchup next week against the Steelers' defense, but should break out against the Eagles and 'Boys.

The Surprise

John Carney can miss? Well, not exactly. A big blunder by the G-Men on Sunday was allowing 'Niners Linebacker Manny Lawson to essentially "jump" over the line, and easily block the oncoming field goal.

Nate Clements then retrieved the ball and traveled 70 yards for the touchdown. Plays like this shouldn't happen to the defending champs, and I don't see it happening any time soon.

Bonus: Look towards Next Week

It will, quite possibly, be the toughest game for the G-Men this entire year. I don't really fear the struggling Cowboys, and the Eagles are a tad shaky. The Steelers however, have an outstanding defense and a potent offense. Look for this to be a very shaky game for the defending champs.

Week Seven Preview: Can the Offense Get Back on Track Against San Fran?

"We make no excuses. We lost the game that we didn’t play well enough to win."
- Coach Tom Coughlin after loss to Browns on Monday Night Football

You're damn right coach. There are NO excuses for the way we played Monday. Some might even call it downright horrible. Well, we have a couple of choices of how we want to look at this week's matchup.

We'll take a glance at each offensive position and their problems on Monday Night Football and see how they will translate into success against the San Francisco 49'ers on Sunday.

Look for Part II later on in the week for our defensive adjustments that will have to be made after a dismal performance.

Quarterback: Eli Manning

MNF Stat line: 18/28 ... 196 yards ... 1 TD/ 3 INT ... 57.1 QB Rating

WOW. Those are pretty...uh...Bad? Well, let's focus on the highlights on Manning's night. He hooked up once for his only touchdown with Plaxico Burress after his one game suspension but also looked to be forcing him the ball WAY to much.

The San Fran defense has racked up eight interceptions this year but currently gives up 226 passing yards per game, which ranks 20th in the NFL.

Projected Stat line against San Fran: 18/26...235 yards...1 TD/0 INT...85-90 Rating

I doubt the G-Men will throw the ball as much this week, to be honest. The ground game is at an all-time high, and we would be stupid not to utilize the success that "Earth," "Wind," and "Fire" have been experiencing lately.

Running back[s]: Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, Ahmad Bradshaw

MNF Stat line [Combination of Jacobs and Ward]: 24 att ... 168 yards ... 1 TD/ 0 Fumb.

I know this might sound crazy, but even when the Giants were losing on Monday, I'm confused as to why we wouldn't use the running game a little more.

Jacobs was straight up abusing the Browns, like he has been doing to defenders all year. He averaged 5.8 yards per carry and that wasn't even close to Ward's 10.1 ypc. We seem to be using DW a little more each and every game, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him used a lot more on Sunday. I mean, he is extremely explosive and can hit the gaps extremely quickly.

San Francisco currently gives up 122 yards per game on the ground which is far below the 181.2 that the Giants are putting up. I would be shocked if we had a second-straight game with Bradshaw not getting a carry and I think the line will look a little like this...

Projected Sunday Stat Line: 31 att ... 174 yards ... 2 TD/ 0 Fumb

Offensive Line: Rich Seubert, David Diehl, Shaun O'Hara, Chris Snee, Kareem McKenzie

MNF Stat line: Surrendered One Sack

There is really not many stats to put down, but from what I saw, our offensive line was stout again last week.

As you can see, we only let one guy get through for a sack, and we gave Jacobs and Ward room to run all over yet another defense. The line has also played over 30 straight games with each other which has developed great chemistry and also set an NFL record.

However, I would be shocked if we didn't let at least one sack get through. The 'Niners currently have 13 of them, and team leader Parys Haralson has 3.5 just by himself. Look for one or at most three to escape through.

Receiving Corps: Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss

MNF Stat line: 18 receptions, 196 yards, 1 TD/1 Drop

Looking at each individual will help here to see what else we can find out about how they should fare on Sunday.

Kevin Boss, once again, had a terrible day on the gridiron and only hauled in one catch, even though it was a 24 yarder.

Amani Toomer was targeted on one of the INTs but Manning was trying to force it off his back foot. It was also the first game all year in which he didn't have even one reception.

Plaxico Burress was targeted eight times by Manning but only pulled in three. He had the only drop, but the other incompletions thrown his way were...well...not thrown his way. He was the target on the other two interceptions, but like Toomer's, the blame for those are on Eli.

Steve Smith has been a great improvement this year and this is his second game with nine catches. He is Manning's favorite target on third down and has proven that time and time again. He racked up 91 yards and had a big gain of 21 to put the Giants in the red zone with two minutes until half time.

Verdict

The New York "Football" Giants will bounce back against the NFL's 26th-ranked defense, and I almost want to say that they do it with ease. Almost every player was criticized during last week's blowout, and they ALL have something to prove this week.

Look for the second installment, "Week Seven, Part II," sometime in the very near future!

Steve Smith: Mr. Third Down Is the Future

OK, let's face it. Amani Toomer can't play forever.

I know. It shocked me too when I came to this realization. So what do we need to do to secure our Wide Receiver situation?

The problem isn't really that big at all. The wide-out that will fill Toomer's shoes will be filling big shoes indeed. He currently leads the Giants in receptions, yards, and TDs for a WR in team history.

The obvious choice would be current third string WR Steve Smith. It's not going to happen though.

Smith has been one of Manning's favorite targets since coming into the league two years ago. Though, Smith isn't exactly qualified to take the spot. Why? Because Smith is a fantastic slot receiver and can run a slant pattern better than anyone. He has easily been Manning's first choice on third downs.

So who takes over for Amani? I think it will be Domenik Hixon. He has the speed and the hands to be a medium-to-deep threat, just like current No. 1, Plaxico Burress. In the week that Hixon got the start when Burress was suspended, Hixon put up tremendous numbers.

A look at the receiving stats for all Giants players makes this a very likely situation when Toomer, in fact, does leave.

Plaxico Burress: 22 receptions, 317 yards, 14.8 ypc, 2 TD [Missed 1 game: Susp.]

Amani Toomer: 17 receptions, 207 yards, 12.2 ypc, 1 TD

Domenik Hixon: 11 receptions, 197 yards, 17.9 ypc, 1 TD [Very limited playing time]

Steve Smith: 22 receptions, 215 yards, 9.8 ypc, 0 TD

As stated, Hixon has received very limited time for the type of receiver he is. He is a deep threat. Smith fits into the slot perfectly; Plax will be our No. 1 til he retires; and, Hixon should fit comfortably into Toomer's role when the time is right.

Our future looks bright indeed G-Men fans.

Four Players That Better Not Be on Your Fantasy Football Team

This season in fantasy football has taught me one thing: Hype sucks.

What's in a name? The name of a certain player has cost many of us a ton of games. Just because their last name is one we hear on ESPN doesn't mean they belong on our team.

There are far to many people that have been a huge disappointment this year when it comes to playing on the gridiron. The funny thing is, people don't seem to be doing anything about it.

So I have made this handy little guide for everyone to follow. Trust me when I say this. If these players reside on your roster, then it is your job—no, your mission—to GET THEM OFF YOUR ROSTER.

Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson: The biggest offender. Chad Johnson had it all going into this year. He no longer wanted to play in Cincinnati and was expected to put up a monster year to plead his case. Well, if I do say so myself, Chad Johnson sucks this year. Plain and simple.

Then again, it's not like he has had Carson Palmer tossing to him every game, he has had to work with Ryan Fitzpatrick for two weeks as well. That still doesn't excuse numbers like these...

Five game, 19 Receptions, 219 yards, One TD

Those numbers are awful, and I don't think they will be getting any better. Here's a list of guys to grab off the waiver wire [yes, it's OK to just drop him... trust me] or trade for, if anyone in your league is stupid enough to do so. We all have a dumb guy, it's our job to take advantage of him.

Better guys out there: Bernard Berrian - Minnesota Vikings, Vincent Jackson - San Diego Chargers, Steve Smith - New York Giants

Randy Moss: I know you probably think I'm a little nuts about this one, but think about it for a second. When guys like Matt Jones, Isaac Bruce, and Derrick Mason have more yards than someone on our team it's a great reason to dump them

Once again, not exactly Moss' fault. Tom Brady goes down in Week One and in steps perennial loser, Matt Cassel. Moss' stats definitely took a hit at the same time Brady's knee did...

Five games, 20 receptions, 300 yards, Two TDs

While retrieving those numbers, I discovered something I find hilarious. 48 players have more receptions than Randy Moss, and I say players because five RBs even have more!

Unless you have someone who you can switch out for Moss, and protect him in case he develops some chemistry with Cassel, here are some guys you can grab or trade for.

The Grass IS Greener on this side of the fence: Antwaan Randle El - Washington Redskins, Steve Breaston - Arizona Cardinals, Muhsin Muhammad - Carolina Panthers

Carson Palmer: This one is basically a no-brainer. When the team your starting QB plays for is a whopping 0-6, there is absolutely nothing he can be doing right.

Palmer has missed two games this year and if his elbow continues to bother him, he could miss significant playing time in the future. He had basically not time to work with Johnson, or Houshmandzadeh in the offseason, while holdouts became a problem for the Bengals. Then again, even with no chemistry, should he be playing THIS bad?...

75/129, 58% Comp. Percentage [23rd in NFL], 741 yards [29th], Three TDs, Four INTs

Before you start worrying about who to pick up, you're in luck. There are plenty of QBs this year who will perform better than Palmer and many of them will shock you.

Just do what I do... Ignore their name and just focus on the stats: J.T. O'Sullivan - San Francisco 49'ers, Trent Edwards - Buffalo Bills, Matt Ryan - Atlanta Falcons

Lawrence Maroney: Once again, not a very hard choice. Maroney is on a struggling New England offense and not even the best running back on his own team.

Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk seem to put up better numbers than Maroney week in and week out, and that's really all you need to know. Don't believe me?

Laurence Maroney: 28 attempts, 98 yards, Zero TDs

Sammy Morris: 53 attempt, 169 yards, Three TDs

Well, there you have it. Lawrence Maroney absolutely stinks this year. I knew he would be on this list when I opened up a local paper the other day and saw this quote from Maroney "My production has gone down this year, but that's all I'm going to say about it". That's all your going to say? Wow. Thanks for the explanation.

It's all good though, I'd rather have these guys anyway: Steve Slaton - Houston Texans, Warrick Dunn - Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Julius Jones - Seattle Seahawks

How to Fix ALL your roster problems: Trust me when I say there plenty more names that could go on here. I offer you this piece of advice. If you start to look at names, and reputation more than stats, you will not win your league's championship.

So this is how to fix it. Go to your league's Waiver wire and compare stats for the players you have on your roster, and the ones you may be able to snag in trades or pick up for a week or two.

If someone hasn't been performing, but has a liable reason, then it's no reason to drop them [See: Colston, Marques]. Otherwise, do the right thing. Just let 'em go.

Fellow Giants Fans: Let's all Take a Deep Breath

OK I know some of us may be a tad upset. OK maybe really upset.

We got absolutely smoked last night by the Cleveland Browns and lost our 11 game road winning streak. Eli Manning returned to 2006 form with three interceptions, and every single one of them his fault.

It's really not as bad as it looks though.

Manning showed poise after the game at the podium and took full blame for the INT's and the loss entirely. He knew he had to play better than that to put this team in a position to win.

Plaxico Burress came back and had a decent night pulling in a TD and six catches. Steve Smith, our number three, had a great night with nine catches and 91 yards.

Our running backs were solid AGAIN, as Derrick Ward averaged 10.1 yards per carry with 101 on the night, and Brandon Jacobs scored in his third consecutive game while adding 5.4 yards per carry.

Our defensive backs didn't have the game of their lives but we had to know that the Browns were better than everybody had said they were. The defensive line that gets so much credit put up a big fat goose-egg. Zero. No sacks.

Looking Forward to Next Week

This week we get to take on the San Francisco 49'ers at home and we should return to the old form.

I don't see Manning having a game as bad as his was yesterday, and for all the slack our defensive line is going to take, they could easily break out against San Fran.

We just all need to remember a few important things. We are 4-1 and the defending champs, we have the undivided lead in the NFL's toughest division, and most importantly our rival is without their QB and second RB for four weeks. Doesn't get much better.

Both Sides: Why the New England Pats Should [not] Bench Matt Cassel

Once again we perch ourselves on top of the NFL fence and take a look at two sides to one question.

Everyone knows the New England Patriots lost franchise quarterback and last season's MVP, Tom Brady, in Week One, due to a torn ACL and MCL.

What most people didn't know was that the person who would replace him hadn't thrown over 50 passes in college and was drafted to the MLB before the NFL.

It's now Week Six and the Pats had an embarrassing loss last night to last year's AFC Championship opponent, the San Diego Chargers. What is there to do about a Super Bowl favorite, now being buried under the once horrible AFC East? Many people think it's to bench starting QB Matt Cassel.

Why the Patriots SHOULD bench Matt Cassel

OK, let's face it; Cassel isn't getting the job done. The Patriots are 2-1 when he is under center, but it really doesn't say much for how he has been playing.

Everyone knows the most important position on the field is the QB, and when yours isn't playing nearly as well as you had hoped, changes have to be made. Cassel has it made right now when you put things into perspective. I mean, an outstanding offensive line, an amazing WR in Randy Moss, and a solid core of mediocre running backs who can at least get the job done.

There is nowhere for the Patriots to go right now but up. The Jets are playing like they're on fire, the Bills have only suffered one loss, and even the Miami "Wildcats" have been more impressive on offense.

With that said, what's the worse that can happen? Kevin O' Connell looked like a solid draft choice, and they might as well throw him out there and see what he can do.

Many people think it's because the Patriots' coaching staff hasn't given Cassel the chance to throw the deep ball. In the third quarter of last night's game when Randy Moss blew by Quentin Jammer, you remember right? Well, Moss does too, because the ball went way over his head.

Why the Patriots SHOULD'NT bench Matt Cassel

OK, call it a bold prediction, but Matt Cassel will NOT throw for 50 TDs and become the NFL's MVP. So what did the Patriots honestly think he was going to do?

Cassel, in my opinion, has played exactly like he should be. The league is notorious for exactly being kind to QBs who have never played a snap. The Chargers had a good team, and not many teams would've taken them down, and the blame needs to go on the other side of the field rather than Cassel's.

That side would be the defense. The Pat's defense has been absolutely horrible and have not helped Cassel in any way whatsoever. Last time I checked out their roster, they didn't seem to have anyone seriously injured and should be playing great ball. Too bad they're not.

The final, and probably most important reason as to why they shouldn't, is what will O' Connell or Matt Gutierrez really be able to do that Cassel cannot? I don't see any Patriots QB throwing for more than 20 TDs this year, and they might as well let someone develop some chemistry with the team. So why not Cassel?

The Verdict

As surprising as this sounds, I honestly think the Pat's shouldn't bench Cassel. Switching out QBs at this point in the season certainly can't help them.

If one thing on this team needs to improve though, it's their defense. Matt Cassel can't do much when he is one the field every couple minutes because the porous defense can't stop anyone...or any formation.
