Week One NFC North Power Rankings

The NFL season is finally upon us, and while many of you may have thought you got rid of me, I am making my triumphant return. Making the return with me is my NFC North Power Rankings, and with all the media jumping on the NFC North's bandwagon early in this 2009 NFL season, it should be an entertaining 17 weeks.

Let the madness begin.

1. Minnesota Vikings (0-0)

Lets be honest folks; the North champions from last season did nothing to hurt themselves this offseason. They brought in a Hall of Fame quarterback (he will not be named throughout the article, trust me), and the draft's most dynamic athlete to top off an already talented squad with a top-five defense and the league's best running back in Adrian Peterson.

To pick against them in this division would seem almost laughable—this coming from a Packers' fan.

Sure, head coach Brad Childress is about as imaginative in his play calling as an infant with a headset, but he doesn't really need to be. Handing off to No. 28 doesn't take imagination—just give it to him and watch him go. Childress' main worry should be how to get rookie Percy Harvin involved, however, because his speed and playmaking ability could become special if given the chance.

And while the Vikings do lack a true number one receiver, this roster is talented enough top to bottom to cover for that. Chalk up 11 wins for the Vikings, but let me make this disclaimer: Minnesota would win 11 games with Tavaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels, or the Unnamable at the helm. This pick isn't about the quarterback. An easy schedule, a scary defense, and Peterson's legs get them there.

2. Green Bay Packers (0-0)

I went back and forth on this several times. We all know how great the Packers played this preseason. In the first three games, the Packers' number ones made their oppositions'. Green Bay looked like it was playing at a different speed then everyone else, and Aaron Rodgers looked like he might be worthy of MVP consideration this season.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. It still was the preseason—and now it's over. Everyone is back to 0-0, and Green Bay still has a lot to prove coming off their 6-10 disaster last season.

I like what the defense has shown so far. The attacking style of defense is something Packers fans aren't used to, and that's a good thing. The days of Bob Sanders and his back on your heels style defense are long gone. I'd expect the Packers defense to be better, but don't expect the Pittsburgh Steelers quite yet. It's going to take some time.

Rodgers is the real deal though. What kind of stat line is out of the question for him? 4000 plus yards and 35 passing touchdowns really don't seem like much of stretch this season. Put down 10 wins for the Packers and a wild card berth.

3. Chicago Bears (0-0)

I struggled with the Bears too. Everyone is raving about the arrival of Jay Cutler and Orlando Pace, but I'm still not sold on Chicago. I think that defense could struggle this season, and Brian Urlacher definitely isn't getting any younger. At this point in his career, I'd confidently give him the label of overrated.

Cutler scares me too. He has almost nothing to work with in terms of receivers save tight end Greg Olson, and the attitude problems that Cutler has previously shown could resume in the Windy City.

However, Cutler and running back Matt Forte make a formidable duo. Forte had a monster 2008, but time will tell how the arrival Cutler will affect the productivity of Forte. Pace should solidify Cutler's blindside too, but truth be told Pace has been injury prone late in his career.

In the end, there was just too many question marks in Chicago for me to have them over the Packers. I still think Chicago will be an eight or nine win team, but they will be on the outside looking in come playoff time.

4. Detroit Lions (0-0)

Don't get me wrong, I think the Lions are headed in the right direction. But this season is going to be another long one in Detroit.

Starting number one pick Matthew Stafford was an absolute must for this franchise, but he's going to take his lumps. More then likely, he's going to have a terrible season. Matt Ryan made the turnaround last season, but let's not kid ourselves; the Falcons of 2008 were immensely better then these Lions.

On the good side though, Detroit drafted smart and efficiently last April. They may have as many as five to seven rookie starters from the get go, and that bodes well for their long term success. Head coach Jim Schwartz was a great hire for this ailing organization as well.

I think it'd be more then generous to give the Lions four wins. So sorry Detroit, but I think you're going to see a 2-14 football team this season. That's not all bad compared to the horror scene that was 2008, so cheer up.

Player to Watch in Week One: Aaron Rodgers, GB

Rodgers could realistically be my player to watch in every week this season. Everyone is on his bandwagon now, but he's going to have a monster year. It starts Week one against Chicago.

Game To Watch: Chicago @ Green Bay

This really is about as big as a Week one match up can get. Who ever comes away victorious comes away with a whole lot of momentum and confidence. Should be interesting to see Cutler go up against the Packers' new 3-4 defense as well.

Predictions

Minnesota 31, Cleveland 10

The Browns quarterback situation is a mess. Minnesota's defense will feast on whoever is under center, and Peterson will carry the load in a laugher.

Green Bay 27, Chicago 24

In a classical Packers-Bears duel, Rodgers carries Green Bay past Cutler. Both defenses struggle, but one errant throw from Cutler dooms Chicago at Lambeau.

New Orleans 42, Detroit 17

Saints QB Drew Brees picks apart the Lions. Stafford has a decent debut, but it's not hardly enough. Zero wins in 18 tries for Detroit.

Overall: (0-0)

A Fallen Hero: The Brett Favre Story Rambles on

Ever since Brett Favre was released by the New York Jets a little less than a week ago, I've had a lot of time to think about the newest Favre-to-the-Vikings saga. I've heard all the theories, all the quotes, and probably, all the lies.

Which leads me to my conclusion on the topic: Favre needs to stay retired. No more side stepping questions, Brett, with, "At this time, I am retired"—we all know what "at this time" means to you.

Yet everything I've read points to Favre coming back, and it all states that the reason Favre would come back is to stick it to the Packers and Ted Thompson, for whom he still has a blurring hate.

This from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Favre can't stand Green Bay," the source said. "He wants to play Green Bay and say, 'I told you so.' His bitterness is creating this. I think he's calling Minnesota. I think Minnesota is talking about this as we speak. You haven't heard the end of Favre. No way. He is bionic. As long as somebody will let him in, he will play."

More from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

"Boy, does Favre have it bad out bad for Thompson," the source said then. "He talked about the Packers all the time. He's obsessed with them. I don't know if he's ever going to let it go."

There's no "I think I can still play", or "I want to win one more championship"—it's all about getting back at the Packers. Sounds more like a revengeful third-grader to me than an eventual Hall of Fame quarterback.

Besides, if I'm the Minnesota Vikings, I tell Favre thanks, but no thanks. If all you're interested in is beating your former team in two games this season, then we don't want you on this roster.

And we all saw Favre's late game struggles from a year ago that was more reminiscent of a certain Tarvaris Jackson than the Favre we're used to.

And can you imagine when the Vikings come to Lambeau Field? Even some of the Favre apologists will be scorned when he dons the Viking purple, and it could be a very sad occasion hearing 70,000 plus fans boo their former hero.

Favre was such an icon in Wisconsin for so long, and I will cherish the years of service he gave to the Packers organization. I don't even have any problem with him having hard feelings towards Thompson and the Packers, but Favre should keep the fans in mind when he decides to act on his boyish impulses for revenge.

We've been with Favre for so long, and our fan base is already split over his time in New York. If he went to the Vikings, who knows what would happen among our fan base?

But I can tell you one thing for sure though—Favre would be an afterthought to me. No more cheering for him and his other team, because my love for the Packers outweighs my love for Favre—always has and always will.

So my plea to Favre is simple: Stay retired. End the Vikings' talk and your immature impulses for revenge. You're still a hero to me and millions of Packers fans. Don't ruin that for yourself.

A Closer Look at Green Bay Packers' Second Day of NFL Draft

While the Green Bay Packers might have had a tremendous day one of the 2009 NFL Draft, general manager Ted Thompson and the rest of the Packers front office was back at work Sunday for day two of the draft process. Let's take a closer look at who was selected by the Packers in rounds three through seven.

Fourth Round (No. 109 overall): T.J. Lang, Offensive Tackle, Eastern Michigan

Lang is definitely an unknown to most, but with 36 straight starts at Eastern Michigan, he is an experienced offensive tackle that the Packers need to help shore up a thin position in Green Bay.

In addition to his excellent durability, Lang has the versatility to play every offensive line position and was a second team All-MAC performer in 2008.

Scouts, Inc. rates him as a polished run blocker with above average upper body strength and no character issues.

Grade: B

Lang is a great value in the fourth round, and the pick addresses another one of the Packers glaring needs. While he might take a season or two to become a full time player in the NFL, he should get time behind either Chad Clifton or Mark Tauscher (if retained, which looks more unlikely) to learn and address the weaknesses in his game.

Fifth Round (145): Quinn Johnson, Fullback, LSU

Johnson is most likely another unknown to most, including me. Scouts, Inc. had Johnson as the third best fullback in the draft, and he possesses good size and strength for the position.

However, there appears to be some flaws that make him a reach at this point in the draft. First off, he appears to lack any sort of receiving skills, and while the fullback has not been used much out of the backfield in the Mike McCarthy era, it's a trait that any starting caliber fullback should possess.

Second, he only carried the ball 16 times in 15 career starts in college, so pure production is lacking as well.

Grade: C-

In my opinion, this was too high to select a fullback which wasn't a position of need. We all know that Thompson likes to have two fullbacks on the roster, but I just don't see the value here in the fifth round. Someone like Michael Hamlin or Victor Harris would have had more value to me with this pick.

Fifth Round (162): Jamon Meredith, Offensive Tackle, South Carolina

Thompson followed up a sub-par pick with an absolute steal with the 162nd pick. Meredith was the 8th rated offensive tackle in this year's class, so the Packers again helped out their aging tackle position with a potentially dominant prospect.

Where should I start with the positives? 36 starts in the nation's top conference, never missed a game in four years, can play multiple offensive line positions ... should I keep going?

And how about this kid's character? His resume includes a 3.7 GPA with a degree in Sports Management and numerous awards for his efforts in the classroom.

Grade: A

Meredith needs to improve his run blocking, but at the 162nd pick, he is a great value. In my opinion, he could challenge for a starting tackle position next season, and has the potential to be a very good right or left tackle for many years. Everything I've heard about this kid has been fantastic—excellent fifth-round selection.

Sixth Round (182): Jarius Wynn, Defensive End, Georgia

Let's hope Thompson knows something we don't, because not even Scouts, Inc. has any information on Wynn or his pro potential. Here's what we do know: he's 6'2", 275 pounds, and he plays defensive end.

Wynn recorded two sacks in his final collegiate game against Michigan State, but is he a defensive end in our 3-4, or is he stand up outside linebacker?

Grade: C

Don't have a lot of information on him so I'm not going to judge the pick too harshly. If he can put on weight and become a defensive end in the 3-4, he's a body at a position of need. Sounds like there is some pass rushing skills, so he's got a shot to make the team at defensive end.

Sixth Round (187): Brandon Underwood, Cornerback, Cincinnatti

Underwood definitely has some talent — he originally went to Ohio State and was a first team All-Big East performer last season. Plus, at 6'1", 200 pounds, he has the prototypical size of a cornerback.

However, Scouts, Inc. has some worry-some evaluations. The words "gambles too much", "marginal closing burst", "lacks recovery speed", and "inconsistent open field tackler" are not the type of statements you want to hear about the corner your GM just drafted. Project corner at best in my mind.

Grade: D+

I think Underwood will struggle to make the team. Green Bay already has Al Harris, Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Pat Lee, Jarrett Bush, and Will Blackmon on the roster, so he's a long shot.

Doesn't sound like an efficient special teamer either, as his tackling and speed were in question. Some thought corner was a spot we needed to upgrade, but this isn't it in my mind—probably should have used an earlier pick if they really wanted to improve here.

Seventh Round (218): Brad Jones, Outside Linebacker, Colorado

Jones played in 50 games at Colorado, starting 36, so experience won't be an issue. He also recorded seven sacks in his senior season from the linebacker position, which signals he could be a factor as an outside rusher in the Packers' 3-4.

From what I've read he sounds like a great character guy, posting a 3.1 GPA with a degree in economics.

Grade: C+

He lacks the size (6'2", 230) that is usually necessary for an outside linebacker spot in the 3-4, but you have to like his potential for rushing the passer. In my opinion, has the best chance of the last three picks to make the team, as he can contribute as a solid special teamer.

It was a decent day for the Packers, but nothing too exciting. Meredith could be a big time player, and Lang has a chance to be a very good player, but the others look like reaches. Overall, Thompson picked players in need positions, and mixed with Green Bay's first day selections, Packers' fans have to be happy with how the 2009 NFL Draft shook out.

Green Bay Packers Fill Two Big Needs on First Day of NFL Draft

No doubt most of the chatter around the Wisconsin area Saturday night will be of Packers general manager Ted Thompson's aggressive move to trade back into the first round.

Maybe rightfully so, too—no one could have guessed he would pull off a trade like that.

The fact of the matter, however, is that everyone's most hated GM successfully filled two of the Packers' biggest needs with two players that will make immediate impacts in 2009 for Green Bay.

In selecting B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews Saturday, the Packers can cross off defensive tackle and outside linebacker as pressing needs looking forward to next season.

The Packers had an interesting decision to make when the ninth spot in the NFL draft came up—a decision that not many saw coming—as both Michael Crabtree and Raji were available.

As nice as it would have been to have Crabtree teaming with Donald Driver and Greg Jennings next year, Thompson made the right choice in selecting Raji. Many mock drafts had Raji going before Green Bay's ninth selection, so Thompson had to have been excited to take a player of his caliber at that spot.

The tackle out of Boston College will drastically improve the Packers thin defensive line next season and will hopefully be an explosive member of Green Bay's new 3-4 scheme.

Then Thompson rolled the dice and traded back into the first round, swapping the Packers' second round (no. 41 overall) pick and two third rounders (73 and 83) for the New England Patriots' first round (26) pick and an additional fifth (162).

The price was a bit steep for my liking, but the Packers got the opportunity to select a wonderful player in USC's Matthews. He will be an upgrade at outside linebacker over what is on Green Bay's roster, and in my mind, the immediate starter there.

Matthews could be a bit of an unknown to many around the Wisconsin area, but to those who have studied him, they know the value of the pick.

He has the pass rushing skills and versatility to be a very good football player right away, but it's his consistent improvement he's shown since he walked on at USC to his spectacular senior season that really has me excited.

In fact, many analysts had Matthews rated as the best of USC's trio of talented linebackers, ahead of Brian Cushing (Houston Texans, 15th) and Rey Maualuga (Cincinnati Bengals, 38th).

Matthews and Raji were the only two picks for the Packers on the first day of the NFL Draft, but Green Bay improved themselves as much as any team did.

The Packers failed considerably on defense last season, so it was a near-must to spend at least one first-day pick on that side of the ball.

Green Bay must still address positional issues such as offensive tackle and defensive end, but there should be no complaints coming from the first two picks.

Thompson gets an A on both picks, and still has six second-day picks to address the rest of the Packers dwindling needs.

Hush, Thompson haters, hush.

Green Bay Packers Who Need To Have a Big 2009

Remember the beginning of the free agency period? Every Green Bay Packers fan was full of optimism and hope that we would be seeing the likes of Chris Canty and Albert Haynesworth in a Packers uniform next season.

However, the free agent period has seemingly come and gone, and all we have to show for it is the signing of a backup safety that has shown more potential then actual ability.

Packers fans have to come to this reality: General Manager Ted Thompson is content with his current roster and confident that he can add the right pieces via the draft. While there are arguments for and against that strategy, there's no argument that the most pivotal part of that system is the individual progression of players from year to year.

With that in mind, which Packers need to show that progression from 2008 to 2009? For Green Bay to get back into the playoffs, these players are the ones you should look for to make their respective progressions.

Atari Bigby

Bigby looked like he had a bright future after a promising 2007 campaign—five interceptions and three forced fumbles—but took a step back in 2008. However, it's safe to say that injuries put a huge damper on any progression that Bigby could have had last season.

Assuming Bigby is healthy next season, Green Bay should expect him to take the next step in 2009.

The switch to the 3-4 could benefit Bigby as well. The flowing dreads out Bigby's helmet may remind you of Pittsburgh's Troy Polamulu, but he also may play a similar role as the Steelers' All-Pro safety next season.

Bigby is best when he roams near the line of scrimmage, and in the 3-4, he should have more freedom to do just that. In addition, his physical presence in the defensive box could help the Packers' struggling run defense next season.

Don't expect Bigby to become a replica of Polamulu next season, but the Packers need him to revert to a more aggressive 2007 form to help shore up the Green Bay defense.

Ryan Grant

This one is a no-brainer. We all saw what Grant is capable of—near 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns in 10 games in 2007—but we didn't see that same runner in 2008. You can spread around the blame—offensive line woes, hamstring injury, etc.—but Grant also took a step back last season.

You could say that 1,203 yards is hardly a "step back," but when you look at touchdowns (four), and yards per carry (3.9), you see that Grant was wildly ineffective last season.

However, there are reasons for optimism. Grant held out last offseason in a contract dispute, and upon returning to practice, hurt his hamstring. It was obvious that Grant never really got over his injury, lacking the burst on cuts that made him so dangerous in 2007.

That shouldn't be an issue next season. Teams may start switching their focus to stop quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and with a healthy set of legs, Grant should get his yards per carry back around the 4.3-4.6 range.

Which means that if Grant logs the same amount of carries in 2009 as he did in 2008 (313), with a 4.5 average, Grant would finish with over 1,400 yards. I'll guarantee right now: if Grant finishes 2009 with over 1,400 yards, Green Bay is playoff bound.

A.J. Hawk

Maybe I'm in the minority on this assumption, but Hawk had a miserable 2008. Last season marked Hawk's first professional season finishing under 100 tackles (86), and he also failed to register an interception for the first time. To be fair, however, one could make the same injury argument for Hawk (groin) as with Grant and Bigby.

Many feel, including me, that the switch to the 3-4 will benefit Hawk immensely. Hawk appeared to play considerably better as an inside linebacker last season, so it's reasonable to expect Hawk to have a much better 2009 season playing that position full time.

One knock on Hawk is his lack of big defensive plays in his three years in Green Bay, and the numbers support that theory—three interceptions and 7.5 sacks. However, we've seen the flashes of blitzing ability, and I don't think it's out of Hawk's potential to get close to matching his career total next season.

With the attacking 3-4 defense in place with Dom Capers, I'd expect to see Hawk wrecking havoc in backfields in 2009. We'll see a different player—the type you'd expect from a No. 5 overall selection—as soon as next year.

With that said, possibly no other player on the Packers' defense excites me more than Hawk with the switch to the 3-4, but I'm probably in the minority with that assumption as well.

James Jones

Green Bay arguably has the best No. 1-4 receivers in the NFL, but it was Jones who suffered through a rough 2008. In his sophomore season, Jones seemingly couldn't get over a lingering knee problem, and his numbers plumeted—20 receptions for 274 yards from 47 for 676 yards in 2007.

Jones has a full offseason to get his knee right, so there should be no excuses next season. In the brief flashes we did see Jones last season, he was an explosive threat: four catches for 132 yards vs. Jacksonville, and four catches for 29 yards and a touchdown vs. Detroit. I didn't even mention the force he was in the preseason, and no one will forget his ridiculous touchdown he had vs. Cincinnati.

A lot of Packers fans still don't trust his hands (the fumbles vs. Chicago in 2007), but I think he has some of the strongest hands on the Green Bay roster. His physical presence is something the Packers didn't possess last season, but, assuming his health, he'll add that this year.

I'll get a lot of flack for this, but I also think this is the year Jones pushes Donald Driver for the Packers No. 2 receiver. He won't do it this season, but by 2010, he'll be our second receiver.

JerMichael Finley

A lot was made of Finley's "lack of maturity" after several mincing postgame comments last season, but we also saw the raw talent that Finley possesses. He has a perfect tight end body (6'5", 250 lbs), and has rare athleticism (4.42 speed, and that's not a typo) to go along with the frame.

Starting tight end Donald Lee had a down year after a stellar 2007, so it's a prime time for Finley to make his move. With more consistency, and a bit of maturity, it's only a matter of time before Finley is our starting tight end.

Let's hope we get that next season. Lee is clearly the more polished blocker of the two, but Finley gives Rodgers another weapon from the tight end position, as he can stretch the field. With his large frame, he'll be almost impossible to cover.

Danny Lansanah

Lansanah may be relatively unknown to most Packers fans, but he has impressed the Packers' brass. In fact, Miami Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells tried to claim Lansanah off the practice squad a year ago. Green Bay had to release special teams ace Tracy White to make room for Lansanah on the active roster.

However, with high expectations must come results. Packers fans didn't get to see much of him last season, but I'd think that might change next season. Thompson is obviously confident in the 23-year-old, so I'm sure he wants to see him on the field.

Lansanah may be able to play inside, and with his size (6'1", 255 lbs), he'd be a good fit there. Besides, the Packers could have question marks there if Nick Barnett doesn't fully come back from his knee injury last season.

He may not make an immediate impact next season, but don't be surprised if you see No. 58 making plays for the Packers in 2009.

Pat Lee

The Packers' second round pick last season was invisible for most of the season, only appearing in five games and registering two tackles. His role was mostly on special teams, and that will most likely continue next season.

However, with the pending departure of special teamer Jarrett Bush, it will be expected of Lee to fill that role. In addition, Packers fans will want to see what Lee can do from a coverage standpoint as well.

Charles Woodson and Al Harris are both elders in terms of cornerbacks, so the progression of Lee is an absolute necessity. If either one of those two go down, Lee would likely assume the third cornerback spot—then and only then can we get a true gauge on his progression so far.

From what I've read from Packers camp, they love Lee and his potential. Hopefully in 2009 we see some of that potential first hand.

And last but not least...

Justin Harrell

Here's a player who could play the injury card til he's blue in the face. Yet, when you're a first round pick, fans could care less about it. In the eyes of nearly every Packers fan, he's a bust. Until he shows us something, anything, he's a bust in my book, too.

However, could this be the year he puts it all together? The kicker in the end is the injuries. If he can be healthy for a full season, what is he capable of? Can he be a force in the 3-4? He can play multiple positions in the 3-4, so he has value. But can he stay healthy?

So many questions, and until 2009, we won't have an answer. But my final plea: give him a chance. One last one. He has this year to win me over, and if he doesn't, I don't care if he's in a Packer uniform come 2010.

Packer Report: Jarrett Bush Looks Poised To Leave

It may be sad news for some, but everyone's favorite Green Bay Packer—Jarrett Bush—looks like he's played his last game for the green and gold.

Bush, 25, is drawing interest from both the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens. He finished his visit with the Titans on Monday, and is scheduled to travel to Baltimore Wednesday to gauge the Ravens' interest in the fourth-year cornerback.

Bush is a restricted free agent, but Green Bay only gave him the $1.01 million tender, meaning the Packers can match any offer he receives. But if they choose not to match it, Green Bay will not receive any compensation.

Many remember Bush for his monumental gaffe in the 2007 NFC Championship game, and rightfully so. He had a chance to fall on a fumble during a punt return that would have all but sealed the game for the Packers. Instead, Bush tried to pick it up and run, and the Giants recovered after his attempt was unsuccessful.

And don't forget his special teams play last season—Bush led the Packers with six special teams penalties. He rarely played on defense, so his value (if there is such thing) on special teams may need to be replaced.

Barring some unforeseen circumstance (like Ted Thompson mistakenly deciding to match any offer he receives,) Packers' fans will need to find a new whipping boy for next season.

Kuhn Continues His Visits, Montomgery's Cancelled

Packers fullback and restricted free agent Jon Kuhn is scheduled to meet with the Cincinnati Bengals on Wednesday. Kuhn finished up his visit with the Arizona Cardinals over the weekend, but no offer was announced.

Green Bay has Korey Hall ahead of Kuhn on the depth chart, so Kuhn may leave. He was offered the same tender as Bush, $1.01 million with an opportunity to match, so Green Bay would receive no compensation for him leaving.

Another of the Packers' free agents, Michael Montgomery, had his visit with the Atlanta Falcons cancelled over the weekend.

It appears any interest for the defensive end has cooled considerably, and Green Bay has already made it public that they will not be resigning him (he does not fit their new 3-4 system.)

Packers Miss Out On Olshansky

While I was one of the biggest supporters of signing Chargers' free agent defensive end Igor Olshansky, Packers general manager Ted Thompson apparently was not.

Olshansky signed a four-year, $18 million (eight million guaranteed) contract with the Dallas Cowboys last Friday. The Cowboys filled a large hole in their 3-4 defensive line with the signing, and left the Packers still searching for their respective answer at that spot.

A lot came out about Olshansky's behavior at the end of last season, and that might have turned off Thompson from making a serious run at him.

It was said that Olshansky completely shut it down at the end of last season—leading to his benching for the last four games—and had a bad attitude towards teammates.

Green Bay has been strict about bringing in "character guys," so it's entirely possible that Thompson wanted no part of signing a potential locker room hazard.

Too bad, because Olshansky the player would have really helped the Packers next season.

Could Packers Bring In Kevin Carter?

While Olshansky may be signed, sealed, and delivered to the 'Boys, that doesn't mean the Packers are giving up their search for a potential 3-4 defensive end.

Packers sources indicate that their is a mutual interest between the veteran defensive end and Green Bay. Carter has played under defensive coordinator Dom Capers in the past, so it could be a natural fit for the 36-year-old.

He won't be a full time player—he's probably too old for that much work—but he can be useful as a rotational end and leader in the locker room.

Carter accumulated four sacks in limited time last season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and has been a Super Bowl winner in his career (1999 with St. Louis.)

Carter would most likely come for a cheap price, so keep your eye on this situation.

Packers Sign Safety Smith

In the first major move of the Packers' offseason, Thompson announced that Green Bay has signed former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Anthony Smith.

Smith, 25, spent four years as a part-time starter in Pittsburgh, and could challenge Atari Bigby for a safety spot opposite of Nick Collins. If anything, Smith provides depth and knowledge of the 3-4 system that will help with the Packers transition.

Smith is probably best known for his guarantee of a Steelers' victory over the New England Patriots in 2007. However, Pittsburgh was beaten 34-13 and Smith was responsible for two long touchdown passes in the game. With that said, maturity could be an issue for him.

However, one AFC North assistant coach was optimistic of his signing in Green Bay.

"He's got a lot of talent, no doubt about that," the coach said. "He's just got to get the mental side together. That's the thing that will make him a real good safety. He hasn't shown he can do that yet. But if he goes there, they have (safeties coach) Darren Perry. He knows Darren. That would help him a lot."

Cross your fingers we haven't signed another Marquand Manuel or Mark Roman.

Burnett Could Be Slipping Away

According to Kevin Burnett's agent, the Cowboys' free agent linebacker could have a deal done by as soon as Tuesday. If you're a Packers fan, that's not good news because Burnett has yet to even visit Green Bay.

Burnett, who is from California, has visited with the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders and Houston Texans already.

I was optimistic we could make a serious run at him, but it sounds like that could be coming to an end tomorrow.

For All You Thompson Haters Out There...

Read Mike Vandermause's column from the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Second-Wave Free Agents the Packers Should Consider

The first wave of big name free agents has come and gone (Albert Haynesworth, Chris Canty, Bart Scott), but that doesn't mean there isn't a promising bunch of second tier guys still on the market.

Here are some of the candidates that would fit well within the Green Bay Packers' needs* next season.

*Keep in mind—Green Bay is switching to a 3-4 defense next season.
Begin Slideshow

Green Bay Packers' Fans Need To Calm Down About Free Agency

The 2009 free agency period is nearing a week old, and thus far, the Green Bay Packers have yet to make any major (or any, for that matter) moves. For Packers' fans, this shouldn't be a surprise.

In fact, you should have seen this coming—and yet there are still numerous fans who are up in arms about the Packers start to the free agency period.

To start, you really need to consider a few very important things. First off, our general manager is Ted Thompson—most of you know him by Timid Ted or Terrible Teddy.

Regardless of what you call him, he is fiscally strict, and to me, there's nothing wrong with that. He doesn't overpay for overvalued players during this period (I'll go more into that), and that has literally saved the Packers millions of dollars during his tenure.

In addition, you have to look at the class of free agents. A couple of names have been thrown out frequently by Packers' fans, but most notably, these people wanted Julius Peppers or Chris Canty in green and gold. Every fan base wants their respective team to make a big splash in free agency, but realistically do these players fit in financially?

So let's get into the 2009 version of free agency. Many Packers' fans were big fans of signing Canty to help bolster our new 3-4 defense. On paper, that's a great move for Green Bay—a natural 3-4 defensive end who has experience in the system and is still only 26 years old.

But herein lies the problem: The New York Giants also had a high opinion of Canty. In the end, the Giants signed Canty to a six year, 42 million dollar contract with over 16 million guaranteed. But let's remember, Canty has 10 career sacks in four NFL seasons— in money terms, that's 4.2 million dollars per sack for his entire career.

In my mind, that's way over priced. I don't doubt that Canty is talented, but to pay him that kind of money would have made no fiscal sense.

Now let's turn our attention to Mr. Peppers. As most of you know, he was franchised by the Carolina Panthers, so the only way to acquire his services would be via trade.

And a trade would come at a hefty cost. The Minnesota Vikings made a similar trade last season for Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen, and that cost them several high round draft picks (first rounder and two third rounders in 2008 draft). To think the Panthers would ask for anything less is really pushing your luck.

Then, after giving up valuable picks (which Thompson hates), you'd have to sign Peppers to a long-term deal. Allen's contract with the Vikings was six years, 74 million dollars (31 million guaranteed), but in light of Albert Haynesworth's 100 million dollar deal, I'd expect Peppers to demand somewhere closer to 90 to 100 million.

In the end, this is a move that Thompson would never do, and I don't blame him—it makes little sense draft and money wise.

A lot of people made a fuss about losing Colin Cole to the Seattle Seahawks as well. Did anyone else see his contract he got? Cole is absolutely stealing money from that franchise.

Don't get me wrong—he played fairly well in a limited role last season—but five years, 21 million dollars with six million guaranteed? Even I'd be calling for Ted's head if he matched that offer to Cole.

With all that said, let's look towards the future. The second wave of free agency isn't as bad as everyone thinks. The players Thompson is looking at—Igor Olshansky, Kevin Burnett, Marques Douglas, Mike Adams, and Mike Wright—are all players that will come cheaper and can make an impact in our new 3-4 defense.

If we were able to sign Olhansky, Burnett, and Adams, I'd feel very confident heading to the draft. In any case, just signing one is going to make an improvement to the Packers' evolving defense.

And don't forget, Thompson still has the four picks in the top three rounds of the NFL draft to help bolster our defense. In almost any scenario, he's going to have a really good player to pick at the ninth spot (B.J. Raji, Brian Orakpo, Everette Brown, etc.)

Overall Packers' fans, don't get too down or excited about our recent free agency period. Big splashes in the first couple of days do not guarantee success (see 2000-2008 Redskins, 2007 49ers, 2008 Jets), but I'll guarantee you one thing: this past week will NOT decide our 2009 season. Thompson is a smart general manager, he'll make sure we have a good product on the field come Opening Kickoff next season.

Could the 3-4 Switch Hurt the Packers Defense More than Help It?

Throughout the past month or so, a lot has been made of the Green Bay Packers' defensive switch from a base 4-3 to a 3-4. After the season that the Packers' defense put us through last season, the change was almost universally accepted among writers on this site—including me.

But is it possible that the switch is going to worsen the Packers' defense rather than strengthen it?

For the first signs of evidence to this claim, look no further than personnel.

In my opinion, even following last season's disaster, the Packers had entrenched starters next season in the 4-3 at both defensive ends (Aaron Kampman and Cullen Jenkins), one defensive tackle (Ryan Pickett), two linebackers (A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett), and three defensive backs (Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, and Al Harris).

That only left the need for serious improvements at three positions: one defensive tackle spot, outside linebacker, and strong safety—the latter being debatable as the 2007 version of Atari Bigby is a starter.

However, now that we have fully committed to the 3-4, there are question marks up and down the defensive roster.

At defensive end, we have possibly one solidified starter in Jenkins. I've heard many rumblings that he may not be the right type of player for end in this scheme, and it is going to severely hamper his rapidly evolving pass rushing skills for next season and beyond. Now, we have a glaring need for not one, but possibly, two defensive ends that are big enough to play in this system.

Defensive tackle is where things get really messy. Tackle is widely regarded as the single most important position in a 3-4, and it's anyone's guess if we have someone on our current roster that can play that position to the level it takes for the scheme to work.

It's no mystery as to why the likes of Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and New England have some of the best 3-4 defenses, and it's because they have players like Haloti Ngata, Casey Hampton, and Vince Wilfork clogging up the middle of offensive lines.

Unless someone can give me a compelling case as to how someone on our roster is comparable to the three players that I just mentioned, let's add this to our list of needs this offseason.

Let's move to linebackers. In the middle, we'll presumably have Hawk and Barnett. Hawk seems to fit the mold best, but in no way is Nick Barnett a 3-4 inside linebacker. The prototypical inside linebacker in the 3-4 is big, with the ability to take on blockers in the hole.

Maybe it's just me, but Barnett doesn't fit that description one bit—he's best when he is free to roam and can make tackles in space. I wouldn't call inside linebacker a need, but it's something to definitely keep your eye on.

And what about the outside linebackers? They have to be destructive in this scheme, and on one side you'll see Aaron Kampman—arguably one of the top five defensive ends in the NFL—with a whole new set of responsibilities. Does he have the ability to make the transition?

In any case, it's definitely a risky idea moving your best defensive player into a new position. And even more definitively, if this move doesn't work out, this defense doesn't work.

Then we have the great mystery of the other outside linebacker. This is obviously an area that we have to address this offseason, because frankly, I don't want to see Brandon Chillar or Brady Poppinga starting at this spot.

There are options here—drafting Brian Orakpo or Everette Brown, or in the free agent market—but general manager Ted Thompson absolutely has to upgrade this position.

And you can't forget about the defensive backs. This may seem like only a front seven switch, but in most 3-4 cases, zone coverage is asked out of the defensive secondary. For a group that has run strictly bump-and-run coverage the past couple of years, this maybe a rougher transition than many think.

The philosophical switch puts Al Harris' Packer career in jeopardy, and after Woodson and Tramon Williams, the Packers' cornerback depth is fairly scarce. Many draft experts have Green Bay taking a cornerback (most frequently Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State) with their 9th pick, which means other important areas won't be fixed with an impact guy in the draft.

Also, can Nick Collins and Atari Bigby be Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu types? Safeties garner a lot of responsibility in the 3-4, and who knows if either is up to the task—including the Pro Bowler Collins.

Now, let's re-examine the Packers' needs now in the 3-4 scheme: one, possibly two defensive ends, prototypical nose tackle, one outside linebacker, depth at middle linebacker and cornerback, and the aforementioned strong safety.

The fact of the matter is, finding players who fit these descriptions has become a lot harder in the 3-4 than finding guys who fit into the 4-3. We've increased our needs on a defense that was only a couple of injuries and pieces away from being a pretty good unit.

You must remember: in 2007, we had nearly an identical defensive roster (with a 4-3), and we ranked in the top 15 in nearly every defensive category. We have one year of injuries and genuine bad luck and we need to blow the whole thing up?

But it doesn't stop there. How fast, realistically, can we expect defensive coordinator Dom Capers to implement this new scheme? With every single player on our current roster scheduled to learn am entirely new defense, can we expect our defense to be better next season? There has to be a learning curve, right?

And trust me, just switching to the 3-4 doesn't guarantee results, no matter what the timeline. Just ask the San Francisco 49ers how many playoff berths they've accumulated since making the switch. That number right before one; what is it again? You guessed it math geniuses, zero!

I want to be optimistic about the next season and tell you all that we're going back to the playoffs. But the reality in Titletown is just because we're switching to a 3-4 doesn't mean improvement.

In fact, it could mean the exact opposite next season. Another season like last season, and who knows what your 2010 version of the Green Bay Packers will look like—from the front office to the field.

Just declaring us a new defensive scheme was far and away the easiest part; the hardest part is just beginning, my friends.

Green Bay Packers: Three Things To Improve On Next Season

It's been over a month since the Green Bay Packers played their regular season finale, but the sting from the past season has yet to vacate itself from my football conscience.

But with every offseason comes another new season, and even though that new season doesn't start for nearly seven months, it's never too early to look back at how this new season can turn out differently than the previous.

And while there are probably 10 or more things that a 6-10 team can do to improve, I'll narrow down the Packers' top three for next season.

First Quarter Offense

What better place to look for improvement than right at the beginning of games? Green Bay's offense in the first quarter of games was terrible this season.

In numerous games, the Packers did not score a touchdown in the first quarter, and in many of those games, it took Green Bay a couple of drives to even muster a first down.

So where does the blame belong? You have to start at the top with Packers coach Mike McCarthy. Opening drives are usually planned out, to a certain degree, before the game in practice. McCarthy was out-coached in the first quarter, plain and simple.

On the other hand, however, the players did not execute either. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers needs to get in rhythm quicker in games, because far too many times he missed open receivers on the first and second drives of games. Receiver Greg Jennings also needs to be incorporated into the first quarter plans on a more frequent basis.

What needs to change? I think it comes down to better coaching. In all honesty, McCarthy had an overall terrible year. He needs to become a better in-game and out-of-game coach for the Packers' first quarter deficiencies to improve.

Fourth Quarter Defense

I wrote about this mid-way through the season, and it continued throughout the rest of the year. The Packers' defense surrendered numerous leads in the fourth quarter, and, in my opinion, is the number one difference between 2007 and 2008.

Next season, we will see an entirely different Packers defense. Green Bay fired nearly every defensive coach, and they brought in defensive coordinator Dom Capers to fix the defense. With Capers comes the 3-4 defense, an attacking defense that should help Green Bay improve on that side of the ball.

Too many times last season the Packers defense was attacked, especially in the fourth quarter. If the 3-4 is run effectively, Green Bay should be able to turn the tables on opposing offenses.

The pass rush should be improved with the new defensive scheme, which means that our secondary won't have to cover receivers for days at a time like they did last season.

If Green Bay's defense can get back into the top 15 in total defense, we should see a team that is going to the playoffs.

Special Teams

From this unit, only punt returner Will Blackmon has the right to claim he had a good season. Other than that, our punting situation was one of the worst in the league, our kick and punt coverage was below average, and kicker Mason Crosby missed two game winning field goals.

Statistically, the Packers were last in the NFL in both kick return average (20.1 yards per return) and in special team penalities (24). In a composite special teams ranking put together by Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News, Green Bay ranked a pultry 26th in the NFL.

In many NFL games, the overall talent level of the opposing teams isn't that far off. It's the special teams unit that so often has a huge impact on who wins and who loses in this league.

How should we fix this unit? First off, general manager Ted Thompson needs to make a good decision at punter. Is Jeremy Kapinos the answer? He finished last season strong, but is he very inexperienced. Raiders punter Shane Lechler, arguably the best punter in the league, is a free agent and his name has been thrown around Titletown as someone Thompson should pursue.

Coverage units are all about coaching and hard work. McCarthy needs to emphasize better coverage next season, because the field position disparity last season for Green Bay was atrocious.

Lastly, Crosby just needs to forget about last season. He was arguably one of the better kickers in all the NFL his rookie season, so he has the talent to get it done. His two game winning attempts were difficult (one was blocked), but NFL kickers need to make those kind of kicks.

In hindsight, Green Bay shouldn't have been a 6-10 team last season. This team has far too much talent for that to repeat next season. If the Packers can improve in these three major areas, I could easily see Green Bay making a four to five win improvement in 2009.

And I sure hope they do, because no one in Titletown wants to suffer through another season like the last.

Green Bay Packers' Top Five Offensive Plays of 2008

While 6-10 wasn't what any Green Bay Packer fan was hoping for this season, it wasn't all bad in Titletown during 2008.

Over my next couple of articles, I will be attempting to ease the pain of my fellow Packers' fans (and my own, of course) with a review of some of the more memorable plays of the 2008 season.

1. Aaron Rodgers' one-yard touchdown vs Minnesota Vikings

Let's be honest, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers might have gone through the hardest offseason in the history of NFL quarterbacks.

Sure, he had some supporters, but a fair share of his teams' fan base was absolutely furious that he was going to be taking the snaps on opening day at Lambeau Field.

But out he came; out that same tunnel that the legendary Brett Favre had for 17 years, and he was cheered—loudly. His entrance was a wonderful moment at Lambeau Field, but it was to be out done only hours later.

With the Packers up 17-12 midway through the fourth quarter, Ryan Grant broke off a 57-yard run that set Green Bay up with first-and-goal at the Minnesota one-yard line.

The Packers called Rodgers' number, and his sneak into the end zone all but clinched a Packers victory over the rival Vikings. You could tell from Rodgers' emotional spike of the football that the frustration and drama from the summer was finally over.

And what more could you have asked for out of the start to your career? Well, maybe a more polished Lambeau Leap, but cut him some slack; it was his first one!

2. Rodgers' 71-yard touchdown pass to Donald Driver vs. Detroit Lions

I can already hear it: How could a touchdown against the worst team in NFL history rank on your list?

First off, I'd say that because it was against the worst team ever qualifies it for this list. At that point in the game, the Lions were only down three points—a scary proposition for our fourth quarter defense in 2008. It was the dagger that ensured the Lions would become the first team to finish a season 0-16.

The pass also ensured a couple of milestones for the two involved. Rodgers went over 4,000 yards passing on the play, and Driver went over 1,000 yards receiving for the sixth time in seven years. Quite a set of feats accomplished on just one play.

In reality though, I'm just glad the Packers beat the Lions in that final game. Had that not happened, I don't think I'd ever be able to forget it.

3. Rodgers' 48-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

It was a game the Packers lost, but this might be one of the most underrated throws of the whole NFL season.

On the series before this throw, Rodgers tried to dive for a first down on a third down scramble. As it turned out, Rodgers severely sprained his throwing shoulder on that very dive.

However, Rodgers was able to hide his pain adequately enough to come out for the next series.

Facing a 3rd-and-long from the Packers' 48-yard line, Rodgers delivered a strike, down the seam of Tampa's Cover-Two defense—no easy throw in any circumstance. The pass hit Jennings in stride and he walked into the end zone for a Green Bay touchdown.

In my opinion, it was probably the hardest thrown ball I've seen Rodgers throw in his career—and he had a busted shoulder. If that wasn't enough, anyone who knows anything about the Cover-2 will tell you just how small of a window he fit that pass into.

I dare you to show me five better throws in the NFL this season.

4. Rodgers' 46-yard pass to James Jones vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

This turns out to be another play that doesn't result in a Packers' victory, but Jones' juggling 46-yard catch had to be on this list.

It was a play that Jones patented last season—a straight fly down the near sideline before catching a strike in between defenders (remember back to games at Denver, Detroit last season).

This time, however, Jones didn't get a full grasp on the ball and was juggling it before securing possession and taking a hit from a Jaguars' defender. Jacksonville reviewed the call, but it was clear from replays that Jones regained possession before he was violently knocked out of bounds.

That play (and game in general) made it clear to me that we did miss James Jones considerably this season. He doesn't have top-end speed, but he's the kind of big, possession receiver that Green Bay could have utilized had he not been hurt.

Remember back to the preseason—Jones caught a pass, took a hit that knocked his helmet off, and still ran into the end zone for a touchdown. It was pretty incredible.

Here's to your health next season, James!

5. Rodgers' 56-yard pass to Jennings vs Minnesota Vikings

This was the throw that really had me excited about the 2008 season. Immediately after the Vikings went up 3-0, Rodgers beautifully sold a play action and heaved a deep ball.

Yet, after watching Favre do this for 17 years, I was nervous the second it left his hand.

That anxiety hasn't been felt since.

The pass landed nicely in the hands of a leaping Jennings, and the Packers were in business at the Minnesota six-yard line. Right then and there I knew the Packers had something in Aaron Rodgers.

It also set up a monster season for Jennings, Green Bay's newest superstar. Jennings would end up with nearly 1,300 yards and nine touchdowns, and he led the league in pass receptions over 20 yards.

If the Packers can lock up Jennings to a long-term deal, expect a lot more of these kind of plays in the future.

Five Things We Learned About the Green Bay Packers in 2008

While it seems like yesterday that I was watching the Green Bay Packers beat the Minnesota Vikings on opening night of Monday Night Football, here we sit at Conference Championship week in the NFL. Fans in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Arizona have to be excited knowing their respective teams are just one win away from playing for the Lombardi Trophy.

Yet for the state of Wisconsin, this season has been a huge disappointment. Just one year removed from playing in the NFC Championship, the Packers finished four games under .500 at 6-10—a drop of seven wins from the 13-3 squad from 2007.

This fall from supremacy has raised many questions in Titletown, but what questions did this 2008 group of Packers answer? I'm here to tell you.

1. Aaron Rodgers is the real deal.

Blame Ted Thompson for marginal drafts and no interest in the free agent market. Heck, you can go as far as calling him Terrible Ted, or whatever other gimmick nickname you have for him.

But don't even think about condemning him for picking Rodgers over Brett Favre.

Rodgers outplayed Favre all season, and while Favre won three more games, he's still at home watching the NFL playoffs just as Rodgers is. His late season breakdown and subsequent retirement talk have been well documented here on B/R and other media outlets around the country.

I'll give all you Rodgers-bashers one thing: he pressed a little bit when the game was on the line. But how many times did he give the Packers the lead in the fourth quarter only to see the defensive give it right back? How many times did the special teams fail in the fourth quarter?

The numbers don't lie for Rodgers. Over 4,000 yards, 28 touchdowns, less than an interception per game (13), and a completion percentage of 64 percent. And here's another fact for you: Only once in Favre's career has he put up these kind of numbers—look it up if you don't believe me.

2. Greg Jennings is a superstar.

We saw the flashes of it in his rookie season. You could have called 2007 a fluke. But in 2008, Jennings firmly planted himself in the upper echelon of NFL receivers.

Jennings finished sixth in the NFL in receiving yards (1,292), and was eighth in touchdowns (9). In addition, he appears to have that kind of relationship with Rodgers that brings back memories of Favre-to-Freeman or Favre-to-Sharpe.

In my opinion—if Jennings stays in Green Bay for the foreseeable future—there's no question these two will shatter any quarterback-receiver records that are in the Green Bay record book.

But there's that "if." First Thompson needs to resign Jennings to a long term deal, because he deserves every penny of what he's asking. The sooner the better too, because the price only goes up from here.

Besides, how many superstar receivers are out there that aren't prima donnas? You can probably count 'em on your one hand, and Jennings counts for one.

3. The offensive line had a terrible season.

Some will blame Rodgers holding the ball longer, some will blame injuries, but overall, the offensive line regressed in a big way this season.

Don't tell me the difference was all Favre either. While Rodgers did get sacked 34 times this season (Favre was sacked 15 times last season), Favre was sacked 30 times this season with a better offensive line in New York. So to say it was just Favre's quick release is not looking at the big picture.

Don't get me wrong, injuries hurt this unit. In fact, every starter on the line suffered through some type of injury this season.

However, tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher are starting to show age. Center Scott Wells got thrown around by big defensive tackles on numerous occasions. And who knows with the guards? It's a week-to-week debacle with how inconsistent they play.

For Green Bay to get back to prominence, the offensive line has to either progress, or bring players in. Either way, it all starts up front with these guys, and they didn't perform this season.

4. The defensive line had a terrible season.

This is another unit that was set back by injuries. Good teams erase the impact of injuries, however, and the Packers' line couldn't do it this season.

Since this group is so instrumental in both the pass and rush defense, the defensive line is usually a good barometer for how well a defense is playing. So when the rush defense goes from 14th to 26th this season, and the overall defense goes from 11th to 20th, the defensive line probably had something to do with it.

Cullen Jenkins' injury didn't get much press, but it absolutely killed the Packers. He was a factor in both the pass and rush defense, and after he went down, both units suffered. If he can play a full season next season, I fully expect him to be in the running for a Pro Bowl spot.

That injury might have been a factor in the Packers' demise of a pass rush. In 2007, Green Bay racked up 36 sacks—good for 13th in the NFL. However, in 2008, the Packers dropped to 27th in the league with only 27. That lack of pass rush also helped destroy Green Bay's once dominant pass defense late in the season as well.

So where does this get fixed? Thompson definitely has options. In the draft, there are three to four solid pass rushing prospects that the Packers will have the opportunity to pick at the ninth selection.

But Thompson can also stick his nose into free agency—something he's never been comfortable doing—where there are several star defensive lineman that may be available. Albert Haynesworth, Julius Peppers, and Terrell Suggs all may be there for the Packers to bid on.

5. This was a season that needed to happen.

I'm going to get some serious flack for this, but a 6-10 season was just what the doctor ordered.

In my opinion, the Packers were one of the luckiest 13-3 teams in NFL history a year ago. They played an easy schedule, and got very lucky that a blizzard hit Green Bay the day they played the Seahawks in the playoffs. It was awesome to watch, and I loved every minute of the 2007 season, but looking back, that was a fluke season.

We weren't a 13-3 team.

This season, we weren't as bad as 6-10. I'd say both seasons (throwing away injuries), we were a 10-6 team. This season—if we would have made it to the playoffs in Minnesota's slot—we would have been blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round.

While making it to the playoffs is nice, the goal of an NFL season is to win the Super Bowl. The 2008 group of Packers' players and coaches weren't ready to do that. So, by virtue of a 6-10, we are seeing big changes for the better this offseason.

If we get a well-respected defensive coordinator (that means you Gregg Williams), one to two solid free agents, and one to two solid draft picks, the Packers are going to be much closer to the Super Bowl for next season than we ever were this season.

6-10 was terrible, and I hated every minute of it, but it will turn out to be a positive. Next season, we will see a much different Packers team—a team closer to what we all want.

Green Bay Packers Clean House, Fire Six Assistant Coaches

After a disastrous 6-10 season filled with injuries and defensive mishaps, the Green Bay Packers have released six assistant coaches Monday.

Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy announced that defensive coordinator Bob Sanders, defensive ends coach Carl Hairston, defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn, secondary coach Kurt Schottenheimer, cornerbacks coach Lionel Washington, and strength and conditioning coordinator Rock Gullickson would all be released of their duties with the Packers effective immediately.

The firings come at the end of a disappointing season for the Packers, a season that saw high expectations dashed by numerous injuries, and a defense that dropped into the lower third of the NFL in many major categories.

Several key players missed extensive time due to injury: Cullen Jenkins, Justin Harrell, Ryan Pickett, Michael Montgomery, Nick Barnett, Al Harris, Pat Lee, Nick Collins, Atari Bigby, Mark Tauscher, Scott Wells, Ruvel Martin, James Jones, and Brandon Jackson.

Others like A.J. Hawk, Chad Clifton, Johnny Jolly, Aaron Rouse, Jason Spitz, Charles Woodson, Donald Driver, and Korey Hall all had lingering injuries that hampered them throughout the season. Gullickson turned out to be the scapegoat for all the injuries the Packers suffered through this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Packers had a miserable season. Overall, the defense finished 20th in NFL in yards given up per game (11th in 2007), with an abysmal 26th ranked rush defense (14th in 2007). The 23.8 points per game given up by the Packers was 22nd in the league, way up from 2007 when the Packers only gave up 18.2 points per game (sixth best in the NFL).

The 380 points allowed by the defense is the fifth most in Packers history.

The run defense was the Achilles' heel for most of the season. Green Bay gave up an average of 4.6 yards per rush (26th in the NFL), 20 rushing touchdowns (27th), and gave up over 2,100 yards (2,105) for the first time since before the Brett Favre era in Green Bay. The Packers gave up 100 yards to a rusher six times this season, and gave up over 80 to a running back ten times.

The pass defense started solid—ranking in the top three throughout the first seven games—but faded down the stretch (12th in the NFL). Too many times the pass defense failed in key fourth quarter possessions when the Packers needed just one stop for a win.

In addition, games like the Texans (Matt Schaub—414 yards, two touchdowns) and the Saints (Drew Brees—323 yards, four touchdowns) stick out as games where the pass defense simply didn't show up.

Many were to blame for the slide, but only linebackers coach Winston Moss kept his job out of the major defensive coaches.

McCarthy said it was tough letting go of so many people that he truly respected.

"These are difficult decisions," McCarthy said. "I hold each of these men in high regard on a personal level, and I want to thank them for their service to the Green Bay Packers."

With the Ninth Pick in the NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers Select...

While the 2009 NFL Draft maybe more than four months away, it's never too early to start looking at possible candidates for each team's respective drafts. The Green Bay Packers, who finished 6-10 in 2008, will select ninth this April, and here is a look at possible collegiate athletes who could help the Packers at the ninth selection.

Brian Orakpo, DE, University of Texas

The lines on both sides of the football should be the Packers' biggest concern this offseason. The defensive line really struggled to apply consistent pressure on the quarterback, and Orakpo would immediately improve a Green Bay pass rush that only accounted for 27 sacks last season—good for 25th in the NFL.

Orakpo was awarded the Lombardi Award for the nation's best lineman and the Nagurski Trophy for the nation's best defensive player. Nicknamed "O-Sack-Po," the Texas defensive end would provide speed and athleticism to a front four that severely lacks it.

Joined with Aaron Kampman and Cullen Jenkins (who was lost for the season in the Packers' fifth game), Orakpo would give the Packers one of the premier trios of pass rushers in the NFL.

The 6'4", 260-pound Longhorn registered 10.5 sacks with four forced fumbles and 19 tackles for losses. In Texas' biggest win this past season against Oklahoma, Orakpo sacked Sooner quarterback Sam Bradford twice and forced one fumble in a 45-31 win.

Taylor Mays, S, University of Southern California

While safety might not be one of the Packers' bigger concerns, Mays is the type of player that will make an immediate impact on a defense. Playing for the nation's top defense at USC, Mays is a big hitter who also has the speed to cover a lot of ground in a hurry.

Coming in at 6'3", 230 pounds, Mays has been clocked in the 40-yard dash in the 4.3 range. If he posts numbers anywhere near this during the combine, Mays could be long gone by the time the Packers are on the clock. However, if he's still on the board, it's going to be tough for any franchise to pass up on such a special player like Mays.

Depending on the progression or regression of Atari Bigby, Mays could immediately start alongside Pro Bowler Nick Collins. This would give the Packers a secondary full of athletic playmakers, and Mays should be much better then Bigby in run support.

Trojans head coach Pete Carroll went as far as saying he's the best safety he's had at USC, and that's a list that includes Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu.

Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech

Like I said with Orakpo, the Packers need a pass rusher to go along with Kampman and Jenkins. There's a pretty good chance that Orakpo could be off the board by the time the ninth pick comes, so the next best defensive end would be Johnson.

Checking in at 6'7" and nearly 270 pounds, Johnson is more of a speed rusher that uses his 4.65 40-time to elude blockers and get to the quarterback.

There is concerns about Johnson, however. Because he is strictly a speed rusher, Johnson is a liability in run defense and has gained a reputation of disappearing in games.

The Packers have struck gold with players like that in the past (KGB ring a bell?), but for such a boom or bust prospect, Johnson may not be the answer at defensive end.

In 2008, Johnson recorded seven sacks and two forced fumbles. He also blocked one field goal and had an interception for a touchdown.

Everette Brown, DE, Florida State University

Same story here for Brown. The Seminoles' pass rushing specialist is rocketing up draft boards, and judging by his performance against my Badgers in their bowl game, he could cause a lot of trouble at the next level.

At 6'4", 255 pounds, Brown is a tad undersized, but he makes up for it with a Kampman-like motor. He is solid is run defense as well, something the Packers have struggled with this season.

At this point, Brown is somewhat of a reach—something Packers general manger Ted Thompson absolutely cannot do this draft—but with a solid combine workout, Brown could easily become the prized pass rusher of this draft.

Brown registered 13.5 sacks this season, including four games with over two sacks.

Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma University

According to ESPN.com, McCoy is the highest rated defensive tackle in this year's class. McCoy is only a sophomore this season—leaving doubt that he will even come out—but his explosiveness off the ball separates him from others at his position.

At 6'4", 300 pounds, McCoy possesses the size and athleticism to cause havoc in opponents' backfields, a la the Bears' Tommie Harris—a fellow Oklahoma Sooner.

McCoy can be effective against both pass and run, and many scouts believe that he will be a top-line tackle that will draw double teams on nearly every play. The Packers' defensive tackles were suspect in 2008, but Thompson might be scared away after selecting Justin Harrell.

There might also be concerns that McCoy won't be an impact player right off the bat, which would probably drop him off the Packers' board.

In 2008, McCoy accounted for 6.5 sacks and 10 tackles for losses. He anchors a Sooners defensive line that will be playing in the National Championship, so keep your eye out for 93 in that game.

Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

While I think the Packers should focus on defense with their first pick, Oher would be a nice selection if Green Bay went that way. Both Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher are showing signs of age, and Tauscher went down with a major knee injury a couple of weeks ago.

If Tauscher can't come back, or is slowed in recovery, the Packers might have no choice but to select a tackle to fill that hole.

Oher was a First Team All-American this past season, and ESPN is on record saying he could be the next Orlando Pace. It's possible that Oher could go before the Packers have the chance to take him, but if not, don't be surprised to see Green Bay snatch up the 6'5", 320-pound mammoth blocker.

Oher's speciality is surely run blocking, but scouts say his pass blocking has improved every season at Ole Miss. Add on that Oher hasn't missed a game in his career in Mississippi, and you get a solid offensive lineman prospect.

Eugene Monroe, OT, University of Virginia

Monroe is in the same boat as Oher. Another dominating tackle, Monroe has the chance to go before the Packers select. But like Oher, he looks to project into a a top-line pass protection tackle who could step in for either Clifton or Tauscher.

One question mark with Monroe could be his durability, as he has missed games in each of his seasons as a Cavalier. ESPN rates his pass protection as first class, and his run blocking close behind. He also appears to be a high character player, which is something that the Packer organization has always valued.

Monroe checks in a 6'6", 315 pounds. With a solid combine, he could slid into the top seven or eight picks—eliminating him from the Packers' grasp.

Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma University

While I wouldn't call the Jermichael Finley Experiment over quite yet (he caught a touchdown in the finale), Gresham would immediately push Donald Lee for the starting position. Some scouts he is the most polished tight end to come out in quite some time, and I think Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers wouldn't mind having Gresham in his offensive huddle.

Gresham has the size (6'6", 265 lbs.) to be an effective blocker, and his pass-receiving skills are well documented. In the Sooners' high-powered offense, Gresham routinely exploits the middle of the field and gives his quarterback a big target to hit. His hands are above average, and it appears his football IQ would far exceed Finely's.

With that said, it's probably too early to pick a tight end with the ninth pick. However, I can foresee a situation where Thompson trades down and nabs two late, first-round picks for his ninth. This is where you would see Gresham going to the Packers.

Gresham finished his regular season with 58 catches for 888 yards and 12 touchdowns. He will be playing for the National Championship as well, so look out for No. 18.

What will Thompson do come draft day? Who knows? He has been as unpredictable as any GM in the NFL when it comes to drafting, so pretty much any possibility is open. Most likely, however, is that Thompson will trade down from his ninth slot and pick up two choices for later in the first round or early second.

When it comes down to it though, Thompson needs to have a monster draft in 2009, because his job is on the line next season.

Pressure is on Green Bay Packers to Keep Detroit Lions Winless

While the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears will have the pressure of fighting for a playoff spot in the NFL's final regular season week, the Green Bay Packers will be facing a much different type of pressure this Sunday.

The only 0-15 team in NFL history, the Detroit Lions, come to Green Bay. Only the Packers stand in the way of the Lions becoming the NFL's first 0-16 team, and the pressure that losing to this team brings to the table will be hard to ignore come gametime.

Packers linebacker Brady Poppinga wasn't bashful when asked what a loss to the Lions would mean. "That would be really embarrassing," he said. "They're facing the embarrassment of going 0-16. We understand that."

And this game is about more then just 0-16. It's about the Packers' pride—they haven't won in over a month. It's about Lambeau Field, a site where the Lions haven't beaten the Packers there since 1991.

And above all, it's about Packer fans. We've gone through a summer of hell, a summer that divided our fan base and rattled our trust. We've just suffered through one of the hardest seasons in 20 years; a season that has seen the Packers lose seven games by less than a touchdown.

A loss to the 0-15 Detroit Lions would put a dagger through Packer fans' hearts that would take years to heal. We'd be hearing about this loss for decades to come from media outlets and rival fans alike.

So what does all this equal for the Packers? A huge amount of pressure to perform placed on them Sunday. The NFL has a big weekend ahead of it, but the game everyone will be keeping their eye on will be Packers-Lions. If the Lions win this game, Green Bay will forever be linked to the ineptitude that steams from the worst team in NFL history.

Don't get me wrong, Packers coach Mike McCarthy is saying all the right things. When asked about what would happen if the Packers lost Sunday, he simply responded that "I don't ever talk about losing." When asked if this game was going to be treated any differently, he replied that the Packers will "treat the Lions no different than any other opponent we're facing."

McCarthy should be saying these things. His underachieving Packers don't have much to be proud of either, so McCarthy should be the last coach to talk down an opponent. But you have to believe that that's been a driving force to motivate his team all week.

Besides, this team is probably going to need some motivation. If any team was going to give up on a season, you'd think it'd be these Packers. Losers of five in a row, four by less than a touchdown, it would be conceivable that players would start to think about their offseason plans rather than focus on beating the Lions this week.

But so help me, if Green Bay loses this game, immediate things need to happen. Sure, it would be a knee-jerk reaction, but I don't think McCarthy can keep his job if he loses this game. Who knows, even Ted Thompson's job could be on the line this week, and his trading of Brett Favre this summer would have nothing to do with it.

Thompson's record as general manager is below .500, and the rookies he drafted this past season have had little impact on a 5-10 team. Everyone has been calling for his head all season, so this could be your nail in his coffin on Sunday.

Overall, it all adds up to one hell of a pressured-packed game for Green Bay Sunday. Who could have thought that a 5-10 football team could be facing the most pressure of any team playing on the final Sunday of regular season games?

Good luck to the Green and Gold, and to all Packer fans—it's going to be a nerve-racking three hours tomorrow.

Week 16 NFC North Power Rankings

If anyone noticed, I again missed my weekly NFC North Power Rankings last week. To top it off, I'm going to do a very condensed version this week. Sorry fans, it's Finals Week here at UW-Madison!

1. Minnesota Vikings (9-5)

It's their division to lose. Games at Atlanta and home against the Giants are large obstacles, however. Adrian Peterson should be getting more MVP looks, and Bernard Berrian has been a huge pickup for Minnesota. Last but not least, was that really Tavaris Jackson in the white No. 7 jersey Sunday? Look out if he starts playing well.

2. Chicago Bears (8-6)

Bears need some help to get into the playoffs, but it's not impossible. First, however, they have put their first game against Green Bay past them and beat the Packers this Monday night. Green Bay is struggling mightily, but the Pack will be ready to sweep the Bears on Monday night if Chicago isn't up to the task.

3. Green Bay Packers (5-9)

It took 14 weeks, but the Packers are officially out of playoff contention. There's been a combination of factors that has caused the slide, but please refer to Bart Winkler's article if you feel like saying something about Brett Favre.

It's important for the Packers to win out from here—remember back in 2006 when Green Bay rattled off four straight wins to finish its season 8-8. That streak set up the Packers' 13-3 season in 2007, and the same could happen for this squad. Check out the latest Packer Report for more on this.

4. Detroit Lions (0-14)

They let another one get away last week, but you have to like their will to win. Rod Marinelli says all the right things for this team, but it doesn't matter. There isn't enough talent on this team to win in the NFL. The Lions play the Saints, then the Packers at Lambeau to finish the season, so it looks as though 0-16 is right around the bend.

Predictions

Minnesota 24 Atlanta 21

Vikings cement their playoff run with a win over the Falcons. Run defense stops Michael Turner and controls rookie Matt Ryan.

Green Bay 38 Chicago 35

Here's the week where Aaron Rodgers brings the Packers back with under two minutes left. Add this game to the classics that the Bears and Packers have played.

New Orleans 42 Detroit 28

Shootout at Ford Field, but the Saints have too many weapons for the Lions. Calvin Johnson responds to his Pro Bowl snub with a big game.

Packers-Jaguars: In Pictures

The Green Bay Packers (5-8) faced off against the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-9) faced off last Sunday at Jacksonville Municipal Staduim.

Both teams have fallen far below the expectations of their respective 2008 seasons. The Packers have lost 8 of their last 11 games since starting the season 2-0, and the Jaguars have been a consistent mess all year long.

Let's take a look at how things turned out between these two squads.
Begin Slideshow

Packer Report: Mike McCarthy Not Giving Up On Season

The Green Bay Packers might be mathematically eliminated from extending their 2008 season past their scheduled 16 games, but that won't stop Packers coach Mike McCarthy from trying to win the remaining two left on that schedule.

"Our approach will be to beat Chicago," McCarthy said. "I'm not going to change the personnel or make roster moves to use this as a development game."

Finishing the season out strong with this group of Packers should be a priority for McCarthy. If his first season with the Packers taught McCarthy anything, it's that a strong finish can linger over into the following season.

Such happened in 2006 when the Packers won four in a row, including a win over the Bears, to finish their season 8-8. The next season, Green Bay got off to a 4-0 start in route to a 13-3 season and a berth in the NFC Championship game.

It's also the right thing for McCarthy to do, considering Chicago is a rivalry game and is still in the playoff hunt. To use the game as only a developmental game would be detrimental to the both the rivalry and playoff process, and could send the wrong signals to the Minnesota Vikings.

Because Green Bay is the youngest team in the NFL, the game will serve as a developmental game anyway. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is still in his first season as starter, so any game action against a potential playoff team will help in his progression. In addition, the Packers finale against the Lions should help Rodgers build confidence going into the offseason.

"Our full intentions this week will be to prepare to beat the Chicago Bears, to play the players that give us the best chance to win the game, and put them in position to win the game," McCarthy said.

For the Packers sake, let's hope McCarthy can pull off another 2006-2007 turnaround—starting with a late season win over the Chicago Bears.

Two Packers Named Pro Bowlers

Packers' safety Nick Collins and cornerback Charles Woodson were named NFC Pro Bowl starters on Tuesday. Receiver Greg Jennings was named a first alternate, and cornerback Al Harris and defensive end Aaron Kampman were named alternates as well.

Collins leads all NFC safeties in interceptions (five) and touchdowns (three), and will be making his first ever trip to the Pro Bowl. The third-year safety also was second on the team in tackles with 93 and third in pass defensed with 11.

Woodson will be making his fifth visit to Honolulu, but first with the Packers. Woodson also had five interceptions—returning two for touchdowns—and established a new career high with three sacks. It will be Woodson's first trip to the Pro Bowl since 2001 with the Oakland Raiders.

On a side note, former Packers and current Jets quarterback Brett Favre was also named to the AFC squad as a backup. He was selected over Phillip Rivers and Chad Pennington.

Grant Goes Over 1,000 Yards

One season after Ryan Grant came so tantalizingly close to 1,000 yards, the Packers running back finally went over the threshold last Sunday in Jacksonville. With his 56 rushing yards he accumulated, Grant now has 1,036 yards this season.

"As a whole, (the milestone) means something to the team," Grant said. "But for me, not really."

Grant signed a new four-year contract this offseason after holding out during training camp.

Driver Needs Two Solid Games To Continue Streak

Packers receiver Donald Driver has four straight seasons with 1,000 yards receiving, but he will need an average of 81 yards for the next two games to reach that milestone this season.

That average seems feasible seeing as the Packers play two of leagues' more porous pass defenses—Chicago and Detroit—in their last two contests.

As McCarthy has stated, Driver will be playing—there are no plans to sit any starters in favor of younger players—and he has turned into one of Rodgers' go-to-receivers in the second half of the season.

Packers Sign Punter To Practice Squad

Packers General Manager Ted Thompson announced Tuesday that Green Bay has signed punter Durant Brooks to the practice squad and released running back Steve Korte.

Brooks is a rookie from Georgia Tech and was released by the Washington Redskins earlier this season. Brooks, as a senior, was awarded the Ray Guy Award for best collegiate punter.

Brooks will be brought in to challenge Jeremy Kapinos in the offseason for the punting duties in 2009.

Injury Report

Chad Clifton hurt both his thumbs Sunday, but will be ready to play Monday night. Tory Humphrey suffered a concussion, but he also seems ready to play.

Finally, Brandon Jackson sprained his wrist, and he will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis leading up towards the Chicago matchup.

Packers-Texans: In Pictures

The Green Bay Packers and Houston Texans faced off last Sunday in a battle of 5-7's at Lambeau Field. It marked Houston's first ever game on the Frozen Tundra, and only the second meeting ever between the two clubs.

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub started his first game since injuring his knee six weeks before, and Andre Johnson came into the game as the NFL's leading wide receiver.

The Packers, at 5-7, were in must-win mode, and a loss Sunday would all but end their playoff hopes.

Here is a recap of the big plays in pictures from Sunday's matchup.
Begin Slideshow

Fourth Quarter Defense Proves to be Difference From '07 For Packers

It's been a disappointing 2008 season, to say the very least, for the Green Bay Packers. After going 13-3 last season, big expectations were placed on this season's Packers to repeat that performance, and at 5-8, those expectations have not been met. So what has been the difference between the 2007 and 2008 Packers?

Many will say Brett Favre, but look no farther than Green Bay's fourth quarter defense to find your real answer.

Let take a look at the 2007 season and examine how the defense played in the fourth quarter of some the Packers' close games.

Packers 16, Eagles 13

Favre was a no-factor in this game, and it was the defense and special teams that got the Packers started off on the right foot in 2007.

Special-teamer Tracy White recovered a fumble in the end zone for the Packers only touchdown, and Jarret Bush recovered another fumble with 59 seconds remaining to give Mason Crosby the opportunity to kick the game winner. The last fumble recovery was set up by the Packers' stop of the Eagles that forced them to punt with under two minutes left in the fourth.

In addition, the Eagles were only able to muster 38 fourth quarter yards and zero points—another testament to the play of the Packers' fourth quarter defense.

Packers 31, Chargers 24

Favre put the Packers up 24-21 with just over two minutes to play, but the defense sealed the deal for Green Bay after that.

On the Chargers next possession, Nick Barnett intercepted Phillip Rivers and ran the ball down to the Chargers' two-yard line. Brandon Jackson punched in the touchdown on the next play, and suddenly the Packers were up 31-21. San Diego would get a garbage field goal with 20 seconds left, but the winner was already determined.

Chargers racked up 85 yards in the fourth, but 43 came on the final drive where they put up the garbage field goal.

Packers 23, Vikings 16

I'll take nothing away from Favre—he played absolutely great—but it was again the defense that sealed the win for the Packers.

Minnesota was given the ball with under two minutes in the fourth and an opportunity to tie the game up at 23 with a touchdown. Instead of allowing the Vikings to drive for the tying score, Atari Bigby intercepted Kelly Holcomb to end Minnesota's chances.

While the Vikings did score a fourth quarter touchdown to make it close, the defense made the final stop when it mattered.

Packers 17, Redskins 14

This game was flat out won by the Packers defense. Charles Woodson scooped up a fumble and rumbled into the endzone to put Green Bay up by the decisive score of 17-14 in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Packers defense was dominant. They forced the Redskins to turn it over on downs twice, punt twice, and recovered a fumble. In all, Washington was only able to gain 40 fourth quarter yards.

On the Redskins last drive—which began 1:13 left in the fourth—Green Bay shut down Washington's offense and finished them off with a turnover on downs.

Packers 19, Broncos 13 (OT)

Favre played another great game, and his throw in overtime was awesome, but he wouldn't have had that chance without a valiant stop of the Broncos at the end of the fourth.

Denver was down a field goal with just over two minutes left, but Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler drove his offense down the field. In a heroic red-zone hold, Denver was only able to tie the game at the 13. Favre's incredible throw followed, but the defense made it possible.

The defense gave up over 100 yards to the Broncos in the fourth quarter, but the made the necessary stop in the red-zone.

Packers 33, Chiefs 22

This was a back-and-forth slobberknocker, and to Favre's credit, he had a terrific game. He set the Packers up with a four point lead with just over three minutes left, but then the defense took over.

The Chiefs ensuing possession started with 3:05 left in the game, but were forced to punt after going three-and-out and losing seven yards. Green Bay gave the ball back to Kansas City, and this time, Woodson picked off Damon Huard and ran it back 46 yards for the clinching score with 1:10 left.

In total, the Chiefs were able to accumulate around 100 yards in the fourth, but the two stops after the Packers took the lead sealed the deal.

Packers 37, Lions 26

Another superb Favre outing, and in all honesty, the defense didn't play well. However, the defense again made two huge fourth quarter stops.

Green Bay went up 34-26, and the defense was able to stop the Lions from that point on. After getting the ball back, Favre and the offense got Crosby in position for a field goal that made it a two possession game. Fact of the matter is, however, that the Lions were stopped when they had a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter.

Detroit was stopped on downs with under two minutes to go, but were able to rack up nearly 150 yards in the final quarter.

2007 Analysis

In total, that's seven games in 2007 that the defense sealed in the fourth quarter. Also, don't forget about the first Bears game. The Packers defense gave up the lead with just over two minutes to go, but Favre was unable to bring the Packers back in the final two minutes.

Fast forward to 2008. No doubt the Packers have played several close games, so let's examine how the defense has faired in the fourth quarter of these games.

Packers 24, Vikings 19 and Packers 48, Lions 25

Not surprisingly, during the Packers two game winning streak to start the season, the defense played just like it did during 2007.

The Vikings' comeback hopes were turned away once again by a Bigby interception with under two minutes to go in the fourth. In the Lions game, Detroit was threatening to upset the Packers when the defense picked off three Jon Kitna passes and turned them into 21 Packer points (two returns for touchdowns, Jackson run).

At this point, things looked like they'd be just fine in Titletown in 2008. But then all hell broke loose.

Cowboys 27, Packers 16

This game doesn't look close, but remember; the Packers were only down 20-9 at the end of the third. However in the fourth quarter, on a third-and-long play from the Cowboys' 48-yard line, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo found Miles Austin on a miracle throw for a 52-yard touchdown.

Up 18 (three possessions) with under ten minutes to play, the game was pretty much over. Aaron Rodgers would sneak in a touchdown late, but it was for nothing.

In all, the Packers' defense gave up over 150 yards in the fourth quarter alone.

Buccaneers 30, Packers 21

While Rodgers played terribly in this game, so did the defense. Up 21-20 in the fourth quarter, the defense proceeded to give up a touchdown and field goal to give the Bucs the win.

Tampa Bay racked up over 100 yards of offense in the final stanza and controlled the ball for over 13 minutes. When the Packers desperately needed a stop on the touchdown drive, they were unable to get it.

Falcons 27, Packers 24

This was a game that Rodgers played very well in, but the defense couldn't stop anything. Atlanta ran up 370 yards of total offense on Green Bay, and was very balanced (194 passing, 176 rushing).

However, the defense had chances to get stops that would lead to a Packer victory. Rodgers tied the game at 17 on a touchdown pass with just over ten minutes to play, but the defense again gave up ten straight points that doomed Green Bay.

Some may say it was Rodgers' interception that lost this game, but look closer. After the pick, the Falcons scored a touchdown to make it 27-17. Rodgers lead a touchdown drive, but the defense couldn't stop three straight running plays from the Falcons after the touchdown to give Rodgers another chance.

Atlanta tallied nearly 100 yards and 10 points in the final quarter.

Titans 19, Packers 16 (OT)

Rodgers tied this game up 16 with 5:30 left in the fourth, but again the defense couldn't hold. The Titans received the ball with just over two minutes left in the fourth, and drove down the field to set up a potential game-winning field goal.

Rod Bironas missed the kick, but overtime proved to be too much for the Packers' defense. Tennessee drove right down the field again, and this time, Bironas was good on his game-winning boot.

In the fourth quarter and overtime, the Titans racked up almost 150 yards and the decisive field goal.

Vikings 28, Packers 27

Green Bay went up 27-21 with 5:56 left in the fourth quarter on a Crosby field goal. But once again, with the game on the line, the defense faltered.

Minnesota rode Adrian Peterson down the field, and Peterson capped off the drive with a 29-yard scamper that put the Vikings up 28-27. To Rodgers' credit, he lead the Packers to within field goal range, but Crosby's field goal attempt missed just wide.

In all, the Vikings totaled over 100 yards in the final quarter against the Packers.

Panthers 35, Packers 31

This is starting to sound like a broken record. Green Bay kicked a field goal with under two minutes to go to take a 31-28 lead, but the Panthers marched right down the field on the defense.

DeAngelo Williams scored his fourth touchdown of the game to give Carolina the 35-31 lead that it would hold. Rodgers threw an errant interception late, but that shouldn't have mattered.

Panthers gobbled up over 100 yards on the Packers' defense in the fourth, including two touchdowns.

Texans 24, Packers 21

The Packers' fourth quarter defense failed them twice in this game. Ryan Grant put the Packers up 14-13 on the first play of the fourth quarter, but Matt Schaub promptly lead the Texans down the field to regain the lead 21-14 with just over 10 minutes left.

Rodgers tied the game again with a touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson with 5:56 remaining. Yet again, however, the Texans were able to drive down the field and into field goal range for Josh Brown. Houston's kicker was true with his kick and the Packers were sent to another fourth quarter loss.

In an embarrassing fourth quarter, the Packers gave up 140 yards of offense to the Texans and ten points.

2008 Analysis

Overall in 2008, seven games were swung in the opposition's direction because of fourth quarter defense. In comparsion, seven games in 2007 were swung the Packers' way because of fourth quarter holds by the defense.

So what happened to the Packers fourth quarter defense from 2007 to 2008? One could argue injuries, schemes, personnel, etc.

No matter what the reason is, fourth quarter defense is the obvious culprit to the Packers' demise in 2008. So please don't look at number four, don't look at number twelve, and most importantly, don't look at Mr. Thompson sitting in the press box for the reason as to why the Packers are 5-8 right now.

Packers-Texans: Five Matchups to Watch

Much like my other series, Five Matchups to Watch is making it's momentous comeback this week. Hopefully for the Packers, it's just in time to save Green Bay's sinking season.

Green Bay (5-7) is now two games back of the division-leading Minnesota (7-5), and will need help to claim their second straight NFC North championship. The Packers will welcome the Houston Texans, who are also 5-7, to Lambeau Field Sunday for the Texans first game at the historic site.

The Packers won the only other meeting with Houston, beating the Texans 16-13 in 2004 at Reliant Stadium.

Five matchups to watch Sunday:

1. Packers' cornerback Charles Woodson vs. Texans' receiver Andre Johnson

To many league experts, Johnson has firmly established himself in the upper echelon of NFL receivers. So far in 2008, Johnson has caught 88 passes for 1,146 yards—both tops in the NFL. He blends a big frame with deceptive speed, and ESPN analyst Steve Young went as far as to compare Johnson with his former teammate and Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.

The Packers' Woodson will most likely get the daunting assignment of covering Johnson. Woodson has struggled the past two weeks, so it's imperative that he rebounds in a big way this week. While Woodson did struggle to stop the Saints' Marques Colston and the Panthers' Steve Smith, he has enjoyed one of his finest seasons in 2008.

Johnson is one of the Texans only offensive weapons, so if Woodson can neutralize him, it will make the Houston offense much easier to stop.

Advantage: Even

2. Packers tackle Chad Clifton vs. Texans defensive end Mario Williams

The Texans took a lot of slack for selecting Williams first overall three years ago, but he is proving to be one of the best defensive ends in the NFL. In the past two years, Williams has registered 25 sacks, and is on pace for around 15 this season.

Clifton will be call upon to block Williams for Green Bay. Clifton has seen and beaten dominant pass rushers in the past, so don't expect Clifton to be overwhelmed. However, he will need to stay focused all day long over Williams will take advantage. Williams has the size and speed to either bull or speed rush, but Clifton has displayed good power and lateral quickness to counter Williams' tools.

This will be a battle all afternoon. The winner of this matchup will go a long ways in deciding who wins this game Sunday.

Advantage: Texans

3. Packers defense vs. Texans running back Steve Slaton

Slaton has shown his dynamic ability numerous times this season, and has performed at a high level for being a rookie. Houston will need to control the clock and the football, and Slaton will be asked to shoulder the rushing load for the Texans. Slaton is averaging nearly 120 yards rushing in his last three games, and the Packers suspect run-defense could be liable.

Green Bay will also need to keep on eye on Slaton out of the backfield, as he caught two passes for 52 yards in the Texans win over the Jaguars last Monday night. The Packers have been burned by backs out of the backfield before in 2008, so keep your eye on who is covering Slaton when he ventures out of the backfield.

The Packers defense has struggled all season long stopping good running backs. Either by rushing or receiving, Green Bay is going to have problems stopping the Texans' speedy running back Sunday.

Advantage: Texans

4. Packers coverage units vs. Texans returner Jacoby Jones

Green Bay's difficulties covering kicks has been well-documented in the past two weeks, and their lack of coverage has directly contributed to the Packers two-game losing streak. For Green Bay to snap out of their slump, the coverage units must do a better job at lengthening the field for opposing offenses.

Carolina and New Orleans both played on short fields against the Packers, and both made the Green Bay defense pay for it. Any NFL team that is given a short field is going to have a considerably easier time scoring the football, and the Texans will be no different. Jones has game-changing capabilities, so the Packers will need to play fundamentally sound special teams on every kick to contain him.

It's hard to determine which Packer unit is actually going to play well from week to week, but my gut tells this unit is going to bounce back this week. With new punter Jeremy Kapinos punting now for Green Bay, there has to be at least mild optimism that the unit can improve this week.

Advantage: Even

5. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers vs. the Packers first three offensive series

One of the Packers biggest problems has been their start to games offensively. Rodgers has seemed to take a series or two to get into a rhythm, but there is no time for that anymore. Green Bay has to get an early lead in this game to take the pressure off their ailing defense.

If the Packers can get a early lead, it makes playing defense so much easier and could lead to an increase in turnovers that have been lacking in previous weeks. That will all come down to Rodgers, who last week started 0-for-4 and took at least three series to get into any sort of rhythm. Before he knew it, the Packers were down and he needed to play perfect football from there on out to even give the Packers a chance (which he did).

This week, that has to change. Rodgers will need to find rhythm right away, and lead the offense into the end zone on his first couple of series to establish a lead. That way, the Packers can utilize their running game and play action more effectively later in the game, and take the pressure off a defense that severely needs it.

Advantage: Rodgers

Green Bay plays host to Houston Sunday at noon CST, on CBS.

Week 14 NFC North Power Rankings

After taking a week off for Thanksgiving, the weekly NFC North Power Rankings are making it's triumphant return this week. Speaking of triumphant returns, the Minnesota Vikings have made one of their own to the top of the rankings with a huge win over the Chicago Bears Sunday night.

Earlier that day, the Packers let one slip, and the Lions laid another stinker on Thanksgiving. Overall, 1-3 was all the North could muster this week.

1. Minnesota Vikings (7-5)

What a two play sequence for the Vikes Sunday night. After stopping the Bears Matt Forte on a fourth-and-goal, quarterback Gus Frerotte found Bernard Berrian for a 99-yard touchdown pass that seemingly crushed Chicago.

Could this be the sequence that the 2008 Vikings look back on and say "that's where it clicked"? Maybe, but let's not get ahead of ourselves quite yet.

Just two days after taking sole lead of the North, the Vikings were slapped with the suspensions of both Kevin and Pat Williams—the anchors of Minnesota's daunting run defense. Can Minny rebound from these two losses? That will decide the Vikings season from here on out, because Minnesota plays from hefty competition in the final stretch.

On a lighter note, Adrian Peterson has taken the sole lead of the NFL rushing crown. Every time I watch him play, he does something that impresses me more. He is such a physically punishing runner, but he has that rare combination of speed and physicality that sets the bar high for him. Look for him to finish near 1700 yards.

Vikings get the Lions next week in Detroit but don't count a W yet—Minnesota gave Detroit their closest game earlier in the year in a contest where the Lions should have won.

2. Chicago Bears (6-6)

Chicago continues to implode in big division games. Who is to blame? Most of it probably falls on Lovie Smith, but quarterback Kyle Orton was terrible in this game. In two huge division games in the past month (@ Minnesota, @ Green Bay), Orton hardly looked like a starter in the NFL.

The Bears will only go as far as Orton can carry them, and that doesn't look far.

On the flip side, Chicago has the schedule to win the division. Minnesota faces a murderous final quarter of the season, so Bears fan shouldn't panic yet. The game on the schedule to circle is the Dec. 22 tilt against the Packers that very well could decide the division.

My guess is the Vikings will only win one more game, so 9-7 could win the division based on that prediction.

In all honesty, Forte has been the savior to the Bears' season. Can you imagine where this team would be without his production? It'd be a scary season in the Windy City without this rookie from Tulane anchoring the Bears offense.

Jacksonville travels to Chicago Sunday, and with the way the Jags looked Monday night, the Bears have a good shot at getting to 7-6.

3. Green Bay Packers (5-7)

Can anyone figure this team out? I know I can't. Just two weeks ago, I was ready to crown them the North champs, and they repaid me by losing two straight. I'll give them the Saints loss, because no one was going to stop Drew Brees that night, but the Packers had to beat the Panthers.

You can't let games slip through your fingers like that and expect to make the playoffs.

Like the Bears, however, the schedule sets up nice for Green Bay to make a late run. I figure they have to win four in a row to win the division, and here is how the final four shake out: Houston, @ Jacksonville, @ Chicago, and Detroit.

The Packers haven't won more than two in a row all season and have lost seven of their last ten, but that's a favorable four games for the Pack. Let's see how the Packers play with their back against the wall, because it's do or die time in Green Bay.

Aaron Rodgers continues to impress. He had a Favre-esque interception to end the Panthers game, but he played great. Rodgers has 24 total touchdowns (20 passing, four rushing) and has four straight matchups coming up that he should be able to exploit.

I'd say he finishes the season with near 35 total touchdowns (Favre had 28 last season).

Packers get the Texans on Sunday. Houston will be coming off their first ever game and win on Monday Night Football, so this team could cause the Packers trouble.

4. Detroit Lions (0-12)

What a sad, sad sight. On their traditional Thanksgiving game, the Lions played one of their worst games of the season and got blown out of their own building. It was hard to watch this team in all aspects of the game (save Jason Hanson's kicking maybe), and their chances for winning a game are nearing zero.

What does Rod Marinelli do? He has one of the most unenviable jobs in professional sports right now, and you have to feel for the guy. He has the passion and the work ethic to be a good NFL coach, but Detroit has nothing to work with.

I really hope he gets another shot at coaching an NFL team once his tenure in Detroit is over, because his legacy shouldn't be known for this.

I'm searching for positives, but nothing is coming to mind. Daunte Culpepper is lost, the defense couldn't stop the Michigan State Spartans' offense, and they just lost their worst Thanksgiving performance ever. Hey Detroit fans, at least you don't live in Seattle.

Lions get the Vikes at home Sunday, in probably their last legitimate chance for a win in 2008.

MVP of Week 12/13: Adrian Peterson, MIN

Peterson has been great the past two weeks. After being benched temporarily for missing a meeting in Week 12, he came back and ran for 80 yards and a touchdown in a win against the Jags. He followed that performance up with a 131-yard, one-touchdown stat line in the Vikes win over the Bears Sunday.

My impression of Peterson is well-documented, so I'll stop the love fest. The guy is the real deal, but I'm sure all NFC North fans know that.

Player to Watch in Week 14: Adrian Peterson, MIN

Did I say the love fest was going to end? My mistake, because Peterson should have a monster game this Sunday against the Lions. Two-hundred yards wouldn't be out of reach, and Peterson hasn't had one of those huge games he had last year a couple of times.

Lions give up the most rushing yards in the NFL at over 176 per game, and the Vikings will counter that with the NFL's fourth best rushing attack. In a nut shell, it's a dangerous combination for the Detroit defense—but a recipe for success for Peterson and the Vikes.

Game to Watch in Week 14: Houston @ Green Bay

It's desperation time in Titletown. The Texans are coming in hot, and the Packers will need to contain Houston running back Steve Slaton. Slaton looked really good Monday night, and his speed is going to be troublesome.

Green Bay needs to play a full 60 minutes and be solid in ALL areas. Every week it's one or two areas that kills the Packers, but they can be a playoff team when they are just solid in all areas. I'm interested to see how the Packers play when they know their season is on the line.

Predictions

Minnesota 27 Detroit 7

It seems some might be tempted to pick an upset here, but there's no chance. Minnesota blows out the Lions on the backs of Peterson and Chester Taylor—both of whom could rush for over 100 yards.

Chicago 21 Jacksonville 20

I think Chicago squeaks this one out because of how bad Jacksonville has been lately. They played so uninspired Monday night—it seems they've give up on Jack Del Rio and their season. Forte does enough for the Bears to improve to 7-6.

Houston 28 Green Bay 21

You must remember that both teams are 5-7. The game might be at Lambeau, but that's irrelevant. Slaton breaks a few big runs, and Texans receiver Andre Johnson consistently moves the chains for Houston as they end Green Bay's season.

OVERALL: (14-12)

Had a 3-1 week two weeks ago, as I only picked Green Bay-New Orleans wrong. Maybe things are looking up for me as a prognosticator!

—Sorry about the Thanksgiving break. Most of you probably didn't even notice, but if there are any loyal NFC North Power Ranking readers, I am truly sorry!

Packer Report: Aaron Rodgers Benefits From Improved Offensive Line Play

After nearly seven weeks, and countless knockdowns, it finally appears that the injured shoulder of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is nearing 100 percent. In fact, this week was the first time since Sept. 28 that Rodgers wasn't listed on the teams' weekly injury report.

Part of that could be because of how well the offensive line played last Sunday in the Packers' win over the Chicago Bears.

“I haven’t felt that good Monday and Tuesday waking up all season,” Rodgers said. “I really appreciate those guys. I said after the game, those guys dominated the line of scrimmage. I got touched one time, and it was because I made the wrong protection call. So those guys did an incredible job. We need a repeat performance like that.”

Officially, the Bears did not record a sack or register a "quarterback hit"—something the NFL now tracks—Sunday, a big improvement over the previous game in Minnesota where Rodgers was hit numerous times. Packers coach Mike McCarthy was impressed with the turnaround.

"I thought they [offensive line] did a very good job of establishing the line of scrimmage, and in pass protection, like we already talked about, Aaron wasn't even touched," McCarthy said. "They played at a very high level."

Statistically, the play of the offensive line has had a big impact on the Packers this season. In games where Rodgers is sacked two or less times, Green Bay is 5-1. However, when Rodgers is sacked more then two times, that record drops to 0-4.

"Games are won and lost in the trenches—any coach will tell you that," McCarthy said. "We've got to do a better job of being more consistent in that category from this point on for our football team to continue improving."

Packers Recognized in Big Win Over Bears

Following the Packers win over the Bears, Packers coach Mike McCarthy was named Motorola NFL Coach of the Week for games played from Nov. 13-17. McCarthy beat out New York Jets coach Eric Mangini and 49ers coach Mike Singletary for the award—his second this season. McCarthy also won the award back on Week Seven after the Packers defeated the Indianapolis Colts.

Packers running back Ryan Grant was also recognized for his efforts this week by being named FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week. Grant racked up 145 rushing yards and a touchdown in his most impressive performance of 2008.

Grant beat out the Pittsburgh Steelers' Willie Parker and Carolina Panthers' DeAngelo Williams for the award, and it marks the Packers' first Ground award since 2007.

Lighter Wallet for Vikings' Allen

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen was fined $25,000 by the NFL for his hit on Aaron Rodgers in the Vikings 28-27 win over the Packers two weeks ago. While the play did warrant a roughing penalty, Rodgers didn't think the hit deserved the negative attention it got.

“I don’t think the hit was a malicious hit at all,” Rodgers said. “We actually joked about it afterwards. In no way do I think it was intentional nor did he want to hurt me.”

There was talk that Allen could be suspended—considering this is the second time he's been fined for hits on a quarterback—but that turned out false. The leash is continually getting tighter for Allen, however, so keep your eye on that the rest of the season.

Still Hurting

While Rodgers was taken off the injury list, several Packers still remain. Here's the injury report for this week, and practice status as of Thursday: linebacker Nick Barnett (out, knee), cornerback Jarrett Bush (ankle, did not participate), left tackle Chad Clifton (knees, limited participation), receiver Donald Driver (family issue, did not participate), defensive Jeremy Thompson (groin, full participation) and cornerback Charles Woodson (toe, limited participation).

Driver is expected to play following the alleged police beating of his father. McCarthy granted Driver leave to be with his family in Houston. Woodson, Clifton, and Thompson are all expected to play as well. Bush (not including Barnett) looks to be the least likely to play.

Barnett underwent surgery on Thursday for his torn ACL, but his spot on the roster has yet to be filled. McCarthy seemed hesitant to address the issue in too much depth.

"Potentially," McCarthy said about finding a replacement this week. "We talk about different options every day, but as of today we have not made that decision. But it's definitely a possibility."

The Official End

In possibly the last chapter of the Brett Favre era in Green Bay, Favre's old home in Ashwaubenon, Wisc., was sold for $445,000 after spending 47 days on the market.

The house, located at 2085 Shady Lane, is around 3,000 square feet—with four bedrooms and three baths—and was appraised at a value of nearly $425,000. Favre hadn't been there since August, when he and the Packers were in the midst of an ugly divorce. Now that he is a New York Jet, the family had no interest in keeping the home.

Loss of a Champion

Bob Jeter, a former All-Pro and Green Bay Packer, died Thursday of an apparent heart attack. Jeter was a two-time Pro Bowler and won three championships as a part of the Packers. His former Green Bay teammates had nothing but praise for the fallen Packer.

"The first thing you think about with Bob Jeter was his speed," former teammate Dave Robinson said. "He had an awesome amount of it. People didn't say he was a speedster, but I remember one time Gale Sayers was running downfield and it looked to me like it happened in four frames: Bob ran him down and stopped a touchdown."

Jeter teamed with Herb Adderley to form one of the best corner tandems of the time.

"I think they realized that with two good corners you could cover the pass and be physical up front with your ends and force everything inside," Adderley said. "Jeter and I were able to do that. We talked a lot about our (position) and we both applied the discipline needed to help win some championships."

Speaking on behalf of b/r, I would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Bob Jeter.

Bush Appears Ready to Go

The New Orleans Saints already-potent offensive attack will get a boost Monday Night when running back Reggie Bush returns from his injury-induced absence. Bush hurt his left knee nearly a month ago, but after arthroscopic surgery and rehab, seems ready to play Monday.

"I was encouraged with the workout," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "I'm anxious to see tomorrow, the effect of him moving around today. But he took a good deal of reps, so I'm optimistic this additional time has helped him."

The Packers know it will be a challenge to stop the former Heisman Trophy winner.

"He's just a very dynamic player," linebacker A.J. Hawk said. "They do a good job of getting him open, getting him in space and getting him the ball many different ways. He can do a bunch of different things. You just have to be aware of where he's at."

NFL Community Challenge: Get The Pack Back on Track

As you will all soon find out, the Packers community was unable to defend it's crown as "Best Overall Community" in this week's NFL Community Challenge. In fact, we didn't get recognized in any single category. While I don't agree with that decision—we didn't even get an honorable mention in any either—I am taking this as more of a challenge than a slap in the face.

So this week let's get back on top. We have some of the most talented writers on b/r in our community, so there's no reason why we shouldn't be winning this every week! As one of the co-Community leaders, I am making it one of my responsibilities to make sure that happens weekly.

Wasn't it great last week to read all the praise we were getting from our fellow b/r writers?

Here's my plan: If your part of the Packers community, and need a story to write, let me know (either comment on this article or post a note on my profile). I have a good list of great articles we should do this week, and I'd be more than happy to give any one of you guys a story from that list.

I'm not going to personally ask anyone to do anything, because I know we all have lives (work, school, family, etc.), but I'd love to run out of stories to give out then have a list that is far from complete. Also, if anyone has anything they'd like to see me write on the Packers, please let me know!

Maybe I'm crazy (you should let me know that too below), but I want to dominate that Award article next week. I don't even care if it's my name in there, because I love reading your guys' name associated with those awards.

On behalf of the Packers community, let's win back what is rightfully ours!

Go Pack Go!

Week 12 NFC North Power Rankings

Another crazy week for the always-unpredictable NFC North. The Packers had their way with the Bears, the Vikings fumbled away a big opportunity, and the Lions keep finding ways to lose football games. Overall, the division went 1-3 this past weekend.

1. Green Bay Packers (5-5)

It's been a long time since the Packers sat on atop of my Power Rankings, but after their 37-3 beatdown of the Bears, I'm ready to put them here. Anytime you physically assault a division rival like that—regardless if it was the Packers or not—you're going to get my attention.

I don't want to jinx the young man, but running back Ryan Grant looks primed to have another huge second half. Grant has averaged over 102 yards his last four games, and that was against some pretty dominant run-defenses (Tennessee, Minnesota, Chicago).

If he has a second half anywhere close to his second half last season, the Packers are winning the division.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers bounced back nicely for Green Bay. He was facing a pass-defense with more holes than Wisconsin Swiss cheese, but it was important for him to play well, following up the Minnesota mess.

Here's a debate for all you football junkies out there: If the Packers win out from here—thus winning the division at 11-5—and Rodgers finishes with somewhere near 30 touchdowns, is he a legitimate MVP candidate? I'd love to hear your input.

Anyway, enough of my endless rambles. The Packers travel to the Big Easy for a tilt with the 5-5 Saints next Monday night.

2. Minnesota Vikings (5-5)

The Vikings blew a huge opportunity Sunday. With all the mistakes they made in that game, they still had an chance to beat the Tampa Bay Bucs on the road in the final two minutes. Chester Taylor coughed up the football, however, and now the Vikes are in some serious trouble.

Let's delve into Minnesota's looming future. First off, I'd be shocked if Kevin and Pat Williams get out of their four-game suspensions. Add in that both Jared Allen and Ray Edwards also facing possible suspensions, and you can see that the Vikes are seemingly up a creek without a paddle.

Now look at that schedule. With games against Arizona (7-3), Atlanta (6-4), and New York (9-1)—plus divisional games against Chicago and Detroit—Minnesota easily has the hardest path to NFC North supremacy. The Vikings could very easily go 6-10 or 7-9, a sad commentary for a team that had preseason Super Bowl aspirations.

Vikes get a trip to Jacksonville this weekend for a must win against the Jags.

3. Chicago Bears (5-5)

The Bears had held the top spot on these rankings for several weeks, but that performance Sunday really opened my eyes. Kyle Orton is far from healthy, and that defense leaves a lot to be desired.

It seemed that they could hang their hat on the run defense previously (ranked fourth in the NFL before the game, sixth after), but Grant and the Packers ran all over them Sunday.

That pass defense is terrible too, because, without a pass rush, the Cover Two is almost useless. Coach Lovie Smith (Lovie Era coming to an end in the Windy City?) has yet to make any helpful adjustment, and Rodgers and company made 'em pay.

It's also shocking how bad their collection of receivers are. Hester looks lost at times out there, but just the fact that he is one of their starting receivers is a shocking sign of how deficient they are in receivers. Without an explosive receiving option—every team in the North can claim at least one besides the Bears—Chicago's passing game won't scare teams.

I've been hard on the Bears, but they deserve it this week. Chicago travels to St. Louis this weekend, and they need a big win over the heartless Rams.

4. Detroit Lions (0-10)

Every week they creep closer to 0-16, but it seems they continue to take steps forward towards becoming a competitive team. Staying with the now 8-2 Panthers on the road was definitely a moral victory for the club, but moral victories don't equal wins in the NFL.

Daunte Culpepper is a stabilizer for that offense. One question though, why doesn't Culpepper just throw the vertical route to Calvin Johnson every play? That seems like a better option then half the plays Detroit tries to run anyway.

Staying with my prediction that Detroit will win a game. I can't decide which one yet, but it'll happen. A Dec. 7 matchup with the Vikings seems enticing to me, but who knows. Lions will finish 1-15 regardless.

Lions get Tampa Bay at home next week—tough matchup for Detroit.

MVP of Week 11: Ryan Grant, GB

It was a huge game for Grant, who I still think is being bothered by his injured hamstring. 145 yards and a score will fix any hurting for Grant though, and I know he has to be somewhat motivated by all the grumblings about his big contract he signed this offseason.

It seems he is getting his one-cut-and-go mentality back, and that bodes well for Grant. He was at his best last season when he made that one cut and headed up field, so if the offensive line continues to block well, Grant could have a monster second half.

Player to Watch in Week 12: Kyle Orton, CHI

I don't know if Orton is healthy or not, but I'm pretty sure he rushed it back too fast this week. Another week of rest should help out his performance, and so should playing the St. Louis Rams.

It's imperative for the Bears that Orton play well the rest of the season. It's possible that Matt Forte could hit the rookie wall at any time, so he's going to be expected to win a few games down the stretch. With his cast of receivers though, it could be rough sailing from here on out.

Either way, expect Orton to play well Sunday. Rams are terrible, and he'll get plenty of opportunities to score throughout the game.

Game to Watch in Week 12: Minnesota @ Jacksonville

It's go time for the Vikes. With their murderous remaining schedule, games like this one are must wins. Jacksonville hung tough with the unbeaten Titans, and they have the beef up the middle to contain Adrian Peterson.

Like Kerry Collins last week, quarterback Gus Frerotte is going to have to beat the Jags with his arm. He should be looking for Bernard Berrian early and often, because if a Collins-to-Justin Gage combo can be successful, there is no reason why these two can't do something similar.

It'll be a dog-fight in Northern Florida Sunday.

Predictions

Green Bay 31 New Orleans 24

Packers secondary puts the clamps on the Drew Brees aerial show, and Grant continues his big second half with his second straight 100-yard game. Big interception seals it late for Green Bay.

Minnesota 24 Jacksonville 21

Both teams will be fighting for their playoff lives, but Minnesota prevails on the back of Frerotte. Peterson will still get his, but Berrian produces the big play that wins it for the Vikings.

Chicago 28 St. Louis 7

Bears get the gift of the Rams, and, for at least a week, heals up its wounds by slamming St. Louis. Orton throws a couple scores, and Forte runs for a couple more as Chicago lives to see another day.

Tampa Bay 27 Detroit 10

Win number one doesn't happen this week for the Lions. Bucs' Jeff Garcia has a nice day at the office, and Tampa's defense causes Detroit problems. Hopefully we see a Culpepper-to-Johnson touchdown, though.

OVERALL: (11-11)

Rough week of predictions. I had Chicago beating the Packers, and Vikes lighting up the Bucs. Can always count on the Lions, however, and they keep me from the ranks of predicting-terribleness.

Grant Leads Packers In Blowout Of Bears

Maybe Ryan Grant should only play second halves of NFL seasons. His short Packer career sure screams "second half wonder".

In a performance reminiscent of his 2007 second half, Grant ran for 145 yards and a score that led the Green Bay Packers to a 37-3 win over the Chicago Bears Sunday. Grant now has 220 yards in two second half games for the Packers, following up last season's second half where he rushed for over 900 yards and eight scores.

"It felt great," Grant said after the game. "To do it in our hometown, in front of the crowd, to get that win when we needed it the most against a division rival, it's big for us."

The Packers and Bears are now both 5-5, but remain tied for the division lead after Minnesota fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kyle Orton started at quarterback for the Bears, but Chicago looked far from a playoff contender. The Packers out-gained the Bears 427 yards to 234, and seemingly had control the entire game. Green Bay totaled 200 yards rushing in all, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed 23-of-30 passes for 227 yards and two scores.

"They [Packers] ran it, they threw it," Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said. "They did whatever they wanted to do."

The Bears, on the other hand, were unable to get anything going offensively. Chicago running back Matt Forte only had 64 rushing yards against the Packers 28th ranked rush-defense, and Orton was limited to 133 yards passing before being relieved by Rex Grossman. The Bears were only able to put a 35-yard field goal by Robbie Gould on the board Sunday.

"We stunk it up," Orton said. "I stunk it up. I just look at myself, obviously—when you get beat by 30 points, you don't have to look too far. I just look at myself and say I've got to get better."

The Packers started the scoring in the first quarter when Rodgers found Greg Jennings on a three-yard quick slant for a Green Bay touchdown. Gould's field goal cut the lead to 7-3, but Grant's four-yard touchdown and a Mason Crosby field goal put the Packers up 17-3 at halftime.

The second half wasn't any better for Chicago. Rodgers hit tight end Donald Lee for a five-yard touchdown in the third, and Packers reserve linebacker Jason Hunter returned an Orton fumble for a touchdown in the forth to emphatically slam the door on the Bears. Hunter's return was Green Bay's ninth return for a touchdown this season, establishing a new Packers record.

It looked like a much different Packers team compared to last weekend. The Minnesota Vikings effortlessly got to Rodgers all game—registering four sacks and two safeties—but Chicago was unable to pressure him Sunday. The Bears didn't register a sack, and Rodgers had plenty of time to pick apart Chicago's suspect pass-defense.

"They took some heat, from not only the media but the guys in the locker room, the coaches," Rodgers said of the offensive line. "I had a lot of confidence in them, every position. But I felt like they had a lot to prove today, and they did."

The offensive line was joined by Grant in the "yet-to-prove" group so far in the Packers up-and-down season. Grant—who signed a $30 million dollar contract in training camp—had only one 100-yard game in 2008 and was taking heat from coaches and fans alike about his performance thus far. His 145 yards were 40 yards more then any previous game this season, and could set up a strong push for the Packers' second half superstar.

"I have felt better and better," Grant said. "This is the best I've felt all season, so I do feel like I'm getting in a groove. We need to keep it going."

Notes: The 37-3 final score marks the Packers largest margin of victory over the Bears since 1994, when they beat Chicago 40-3...Packers coach Mike McCarthy got his first win over Bears coach Lovie Smith at Lambeau Field since Smith was hired in 2004...Packers lead time of possession 37:28 to 22:32...When Rodgers completes over 70 percent of his passes in 2008, the Packers are 4-0...An offsides penalty took away Packers safety Nick Collins' sixth interception, which would have gave him sole lead in the NFL.

Packers-Bears: Five Matchups To Watch

It's the start to the home-stretch in the NFC North, and each game's importance will begin to be magnified for the remainder of the season. The Chicago Bears and Minnesota Vikings currently sit atop the division at 5-4, but the Green Bay Packers are still lurking around at 4-5.

For Green Bay to get back in the title hunt, they will need to beat Chicago Sunday in the 176th installment of this heated rivalry. The Bears have owned the series recently (5-1 in their last six games against the Packers), and have won six of eight since coach Lovie Smith was hired in 2004.

Both teams are coming off tough losses last weekend, so emotions will be running high on the frozen tundra.

Five matchups to watch Sunday

1. Packers' run-defense vs Bears' running back Matt Forte

The Packers' run-defense this season has been a consistent disappointment. The unit ranks 28th in the NFL, and are coming off a game where the Vikings' Adrian Peterson gashed them for 192 yards. If Green Bay gives up that much to the Bears' Forte, it could be a long Sunday afternoon for the Packers.

Forte is a versatile player, and has come on as one of the NFL's better running backs. He has shown the ability to run in between the tackles, and also the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. After the Packers terrible coverage of the Vikings' running backs last weekend, Forte could have a big day catching the ball as well.

There is nothing that points to the Packers shoring up their run-defense this weekend, so don't expect Green Bay to do much against the NFL's 15th ranked rushing offense.

Advantage: Bears

2. Packers' receiver Donald Driver vs. Bears' cornerback Nathan Vasher

The sexy matchup would be Greg Jennings against any of the Bears' corners, but I'm leaning towards Driver Sunday. He's been quarterback Aaron Rodgers' favorite target as of late, and—with his ability to stretch the middle of field—could have a big day against the Bears' cover-two scheme.

Driver has 12 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown in his last two games, so Bears corners can't forget him in their defensive gameplans. Jennings is the big-hitter, but Driver will hurt you if you let him.

Vasher and his secondary teammates will need to play better this weekend, but don't expect much of an improvement against the Packers potent passing game.

Advantage: Packers

3. Packers' offensive line vs. Bears' defensive coordinator Bob Babich

The Vikings exposed the Packers offensive line last weekend, and Babich will try to replicate the blitz schemes that had Rodgers on the run all game. Minnesota used overload outside blitz's and interior zone blitz's to confuse and rattle the Packers offensive line throughout the afternoon.

The Bears' pass rush has been underwhelming thus far in 2008. No Bear has more then three sacks, and the unit as a whole only has 17. Rodgers has been sacked 21 times this season, and in the games he's been pressured he's struggled. It will be imperative for Chicago to pressure Rodgers to help their struggling secondary.

It's a matchup of struggling units, so expect both to win a few battles. Rodgers will get sacked a couple of times, but he'll also burn the Bears for a few big plays against the blitz.

Advantage: Even

4. Packers' linebackers Brady Poppinga and Brandon Chillar vs. Bears' tight end Greg Olson

Olson is the Bears' leading receiver in '08, and he has the speed and size to cause the Packers problems. Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner loves moving Olson all over the field, and it appears that Olson can the handle the slot as well as any tight end in the game.

Poppinga lacks the speed to keep up with Olson, but Chillar is athletic enough to handle the matchup. If Orton sees Poppinga on Olson, expect him to exploit that matchup. Chillar has been asked to cover the athletic tight end the Packers have faced, so it would shock me to see Poppinga covering Olson.

Tough matchup for the Packers, but Chillar has the skills to shut him down. Olson is the leading receiver for Chicago, but you have to remember—he only has 29 catches.

Advantage: Even

5. Bears quarterback Kyle Orton vs. Kyle Orton's ankle/Packers' secondary

Orton plans to play Sunday, but he most likely will be playing in pain. The ankle is important for a quarterback—throwing can be a painful endeavour with an injured ankle—so Orton will need to make sure the injury doesn't hinder his performance.

Not only will Orton be battling his ankle, but he will also be up against the NFL's most opportunistic secondary. The Packers lead the NFL in interceptions, and have three players in the NFL's top five in picks (Nick Collins-five, Charles Woodson-five, and Tramon Williams-four).

Packers shut down Gus Frerotte last weekend, and Orton and Frerotte are comparable quarterbacks. Look for Green Bay to dominate this matchup.

Advantage: Packers

Green Bay plays host to Chicago Sunday at 12:00 CST, on FOX.

Not The Answer: Packers' '08 Struggles Have Nothing To Do with Brett Favre

There's no question that the drama between Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers has been well-documented. Whenever a franchise decides to trade it's most popular player ever—especially coming off a season where they were one game from the Super Bowl—there is going to be some negative public backdraft, and that's been the case here.

Everyone knows that when Packers General Manager Ted Thompson traded Favre to the New York Jets, he said goodbye to the NFL's statistical quarterback king; a legendary football player who has never missed a start, and probably still had another year or two of solid football in him.

But he also sent away one of the NFL's premier divas, a man who has handcuffed the Packers for years and has thrown more interceptions than any quarterback in the league's history.

In all fairness, however, Thompson never had a good relationship with Favre. He ignored Favre's unwise managerial wishes—namely signing Randy Moss and hiring Steve Mariucci as head coach—and because of that, Favre couldn't shake his fleeting resentment for Thompson and the rest of his staff.

But through the years, Thompson still winced through the interceptions, and cheered for the touchdowns. Yet, this summer, he couldn't stand anymore of Favre's self-centered actions. We all heard what Favre said that teary April morning: It was getting too hard to be Brett Favre. He couldn't handle it anymore. He wasn't committed to this football team.

Faced with that egocentrical distraction to his football team, Thompson did what he had to: He sent Favre packing.

And guess what? Even with the Packers at 4-5, it's still the right decision. Not even the great Brett Favre would have altered that record as is stands today.

If you think I'm crazy, I challenge you to make a list of the Packers problems in 2008. Now tell me where Aaron Rodgers ranks on that list. If you've watched any Packer games this season, you'll find him somewhere near the bottom. Green Bay's problem isn't who is behind center, I'll guarantee you that.

Let's compare the two seasons, shall we? First off, the Packers were as close to injury-free last season as any team in the NFL. This season, however, the Packers would rank somewhere near the top, with two defensive starters out for the season (Cullen Jenkins, Nick Barnett) and several other significant contributors missing action this season.

Injuries are a part of the game, but they've really hurt Green Bay this season.

Next, look at the defense. Last season the Packers were ranked 11th in total defense; a year later they rank 21st. The most dramatic drop off has been run-defense, where that unit has dropped 14 spots from 14th last season to 28th this season. This is probably a result of the injuries, but Favre didn't do it alone last season, he got a lot of help from one of the league's better defenses.

And don't even get me started on the offensive line. Last season, there were three games where teams got significant pressure on Brett Favre. Guess which games? If you guessed the Packers' four losses, you nailed it.

In both Bears' games, the Dallas debacle, and the NFC Championship game, Favre had pressure seemingly every drop back, and he played terrible in those games. In 2008, Rodgers has met the same fate. Dallas, Tampa Bay, Tennessee, and Minnesota are all games where Rodgers was under heavy duress, and we lost all four.

Atlanta put moderate pressure on Rodgers, but that was statistically one of his best games in a losing effort. If there's one constant in the ever changing NFL game, it's that teams that don't protect their quarterback don't win games. Favre and Rodgers are solid proof of that.

Then there's the schedule. Did you know that the 2007 Packers beat 12 teams that had eight or fewer wins? That's not a typo folks, that's a fact. When you look at 2008, there's a strong possibility that at least 10 of the team's on the Packers schedule will finish with eight or more wins.

That's the beauty of the NFL people; strength of schedule can single-handedly change a team's fortunes from one year to the next. In the case of the Packers, however, it's hurting them this season.

Heck, I'll even discount the Jets' 6-3 start. First off, Favre wasn't the only big acquisition for the Jets this season; they also brought in Alan Faneca, Tony Richardson, Damien Woody, Calvin Pace, and Kris Jenkins. You could argue that those players have had a bigger impact on the Jets this season than Favre has. The point here is that this team is far from the 4-12 team it was last season, and they were bound to win more games with or without Favre at the helm.

And again, look at that schedule. They beat a Wildcat-formation-less Dolphins by less than a touchdown in Week One, an overrated Cardinals team (ask the 49ers Shaun Hill how terrible that secondary is, good grief), and then rattled off wins over the Bengals, Chiefs, and Rams.

I'm not even mentioning their loss to the terrible Raiders, and their only quality win looks like a win over Buffalo, who has lost three in a row. Who knows, Rodgers would probably be 7-2 with this team.

If you want, I can throw some stats at you, too. Rodgers ranks fifth in the NFL in quarterback ranking (93.3), Favre ranks 12th (89.8). Rodgers is ninth best in interceptions (5), Favre ranks dead last (12). I'll tell you what, regardless of who was the quarterback in Green Bay, if that player had 12 interceptions, the Packers' 2008 season would already be over.

Maybe I'm being too harsh on the man I still have an undeniable man-crush for. So let's say the Jets make the playoffs (which they should, if you look at the schedule), and the Packers don't—two pretty reasonable predictions at this point.

What happens after they lose in the playoffs? FOX Analyst Terry Bradshaw is on record saying he thinks Favre will retire, so who knows. Chances are, however, he will take a while to decide and, in the process, might flip-flop his decision a few times.

I think we can all agree there's a decent chance he flip-flops into retirement after this season, so then what do the Jets do? Start over? The Packers knew they'd be in that situation sooner or later, so they took the initiative and started it a year earlier. Now, this offseason, they won't have to deal with the Favre's diva plans, and they can have enjoy something they haven't had in years—a quiet offseason.

Thompson is getting the flak this season, but Favre wouldn't have saved the Packers from their current situation. And I bet your bottom-dollar that Thompson will be laughing to himself this offseason at the expense of Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum. Good luck with that one, Mike, and have fun with your one "miracle" season you have with Mr. Favre.

Oh, and Mike, I'm sure you won't mind Thompson taking one of your draft picks as well, right?

Week 11 NFC North Power Rankings

The Packers-Vikings tilt highlighted the weekend, and the Bears stuck around with the undefeated Tennessee Titans. Detroit continued their historic run towards imperfection with another loss, and overall, the division's record was 1-3 Sunday.

1. Chicago Bears (5-4)

The Bears were able to show the NFL that the Titans can be stopped on the ground, but they did it at the expense of their pass defense. Tennesee's dynamic duo of LenDale White and Chris Johnson were held to 22 rushing yards between them, but Titans quarterback Kerry Collins scorched the Bears for 289 yards and two touchdowns.

Rex Grossman appeared early that he might have a good afternoon, but he showed his true self later when he tried to force a pass that was intercepted. The Bears need Kyle Orton back soon, and the way it sounds, he might be back this Sunday.

Speaking of Sunday, the Bears travel to the frozen tundra of Green Bay in a big game for both squads.

2. Minnesota Vikings (5-4)

The Vikings beat the Packers 28-27, but this was a game that very well could have been 42-10. Minnesota continues to shoot themselves in the foot with turnovers and terrible special teams play, and it almost cost them this game. The Vikings are already tied for giving up the most return touchdowns in one season in NFL history; that's how bad it is.

On a lighter side, it was coach Brad Childress' first win over the Packers in six tries, and he's darn lucky he won it because you can't be a likable Vikings coach without beating their hated rivals. Childress' next task will be getting the Vikes ready to continue their momentum after an emotional and physically draining win.

The Vikings travel to Tampa Bay to face the Buc's, a place where Minnesota hasn't won since 1997.

3. Green Bay Packers (4-5)

What a heart breaker. For a young team like the Packers, this could be their end. Back-to-back losses in this fashion go a long ways to destroying a teams' morale, and if McCarthy can't get Green Bay back on track, the final seven games could be rough.

It's been the same problems killing the Packers: run-defense, protection, and penalties. This team has more talent than any other team in the NFC North, but when you continually screw up those three areas, you're not going win games. So, who's to blame?

Anyway, it looks like Ryan Grant might be turning the corner. He was under-utilized Sunday, but the touches he did get he made the most of. If the Packers are going to make the playoffs, he's going to have to have a finish to this season reminiscent to last season.

Packers get the Bears at home Sunday, and it's as close to a must-win as Green Bay has had.

4. Detroit Lions (0-9)

Is the Culpepper experiment already over? He sat out the fourth quarter of the Lions' loss to Jacksonville, and Michigan State product Drew Stanton came in and threw a touchdown pass. I don't see how Detroit can go wrong with either quarterback, but I tend to lean a little more towards Stanton because the Lions have no idea what they have in the kid without actually playing him.

I'm beginning to become a believer that the Lions could go 0-16. The Jags might turn out to have been the Lions best chance to crack the win column, and they lazily let that opportunity pass. If Stanton plays the rest of the year, the Lions will go 0-16.

Lions get the 7-2 Carolina Panthers on the road Sunday, so 0-10 is just over the horizon.

MVP of Week 10: Adrian Peterson, MIN

Just a week ago, I wasn't ready to appoint Peterson as the king of NFL running backs. A week later, I'm more then ready to crown the man they call "All-Day." Peterson ran for 192 yards, 225 overall, in the Vikings' win over the Packers. In all honesty, Peterson single-handedly beat Green Bay.

Peterson is now the NFL's rushing leader, and my guess is he won't give up that title. He has such great vision—numerous times Sunday he cut runs back to the weak side— and runs with an authority that is unmatched in the NFL. Expect his monster second half to continue.

Player to Watch in Week 11: Matt Forte, CHI

Simply said, the Packers are struggling to stop the run. It's well-documented what Peterson was able to do last week against that unit, so Forte has to be excited to face the NFL's 28th ranked rushing defense.

Green Bay has yet to stop even a mediocre rushing attack this season, and the Bears are better then a mediocre rushing offense. This all spells trouble for the Packers, and Forte could have a big game for the Bears Sunday.

A stat line of 140 yards rushing and 60 yards receiving wouldn't surprise me at all from Forte at Lambeau Field, so keep your eye on this matchup this week.

Game To Watch in Week 11: Chicago @ Green Bay

It's do or die time for the Packers. If they don't come out with some added urgency Sunday, their promising 2008 season could end in Week 11. The Bears are surely going to focus on getting the ball to Forte, and with the injury to Nick Barnett, the Packers could be hapless to stop him.

The Bears might also get Orton back—he's already started his lobbying to return—which would give Chicago the upper hand in this matchup. The Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, will need to be better protected Sunday for Green Bay to have a chance offensively.

When it all comes down to it, McCarthy has his worked cut out for him this week.

Predictions

Chicago 30 Green Bay 17

Forte puts up Peterson-like numbers against the Packers' sorry defense, and Orton comes back to manage the game soundly like he's done all season. Rodgers gets beat up again, and the Packers lose their third straight game.

Minnesota 28 Tampa Bay 10

The Vikings use their momentum from last week to take it to the Buc's. If that defense plays as well as it did Sunday, Minnesota is going to be a tough team to beat. Peterson puts up another 100-yard game, and finds the end zone a couple times to help the Vikes go to 6-4.

Carolina 35 Detroit 3

I'm done giving the Lions any sort of respect, so I pick them to lose big this week. The Panthers are coming off a less-than-spectacular win over the Raiders, and they use that frustration to pound the win-less Lions. Here's a couple neat facts to chew on: The Lions are 1-16 their last 17 games, and are an NFL-worst 31-90 since 2001. Ouch!

Overall: (10-9)

Minnesota again ruins my run at an unblemished record, as they beat the Packers 28-27. Tennessee made true my first pick, and the Lions—while beaten far worse then I thought—didn't even put a fight against Jacksonville.

Adrian Peterson Gets Redemption in Narrow Win over Packers

Adrian Peterson never thought redemption could be this good. After fumbling away a fourth down chance on the Vikings' previous possession, Peterson emphatically seized his next opportunity as he found the endzone on a 29-yard scamper that helped Minnesota beat the Green Bay Packers 28-27 Sunday.

After Minnesota was stopped short on a third down play, Peterson was visibly upset on the Viking sideline when coach Brad Childress signaled for the punting team. But Childress reconsidered after a failed Minnesota challenge, and called for Peterson's number on the fourth down play.

Peterson was subsequently stripped by the Packers' Desmond Bishop, and with the Packers taking over possession of the ball inside Minnesota territory, things looked suddenly bleak for the Vikings.

But the Vikings defense held strong, and with the score 27-21, Peterson was given his second chance. And boy, did he capitalize. Peterson accounted for 64 of the Vikings' 69 yards on the game-winning drive, and his 29-yard touchdown run put the Vikings up by the decisive score of 28-27.

For Peterson, this win was as gratifying a win as he's experienced in his short NFL career.

"That's what it's all about. We came in, knew it was going to be a dogfight, and we pulled it out," Peterson said.

For Green Bay, however, it serves as deflating a loss as they've had since the NFC Championship Game. More importantly, it drops the Packers to 4-5—good for third in the NFC North—and a game back of both the Vikings and Chicago Bears.

The struggles started early for the Packers. With the Vikings leading 10-7 in the second quarter, Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams stripped Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers near the goal line and the ball rolled into the endzone.

Rodgers picked up the ball and tried to underhand a pass to Tory Humphrey, but officials ruled the pass illegal and the safety was awarded to Minnesota.

Then, with just under a minute left in the first half, Vikings defensive end Jared Allen—who was playing with a severely sprained shoulder—sacked Rodgers in the endzone for the second Minnesota safety. The pressure was on Rodgers all afternoon, and the Vikings were able to register four sacks of the Packers' first-year starting quarterback.

"It was a combination of we didn't do the fundamentals the way we know how to and me probably holding the ball a little too long," Rodgers said. "They did a great job. You've got to give them credit."

The Vikings led 14-10 at halftime, and shortly after the intermission Minnesota struck again. Vikings quarterback Gus Frerotte found running back Chester Taylor for a seemingly innocent dump off pass, but Taylor side-stepped Bishop and raced down the sideline untouched for a 47-yard score.

The Packers would fight back, however, thanks to efforts of safety Nick Collins and returner Will Blackmon. Collins stepped in front of an errant Frerotte throw, and took his fifth interception back for his third defensive touchdown to cut the lead to 21-17. The Packers' fourth-year safety leads the NFL in both categories.

After a Vikings three-and-out, Blackmon dazzled the Metrodome crowd by returning a punt 65 yards for a touchdown, giving the Packers the lead of 24-21. It was Blackmon's second punt return for a touchdown—both coming against the Vikings—which places him second in the NFL behind Reggie Bush.

But it was ultimately Peterson's day, and the Packers were helpless in stopping him. Peterson totaled 192 yards rushing and 225 overall, beating up Green Bay's 28th ranked rushing defense time and time again.

After Peterson's touchdown, however, the Packers had their final chance to win the game. Rodgers got the Packers within field goal range, but kicker Mason Crosby missed the 51 yard potential game-winning field goal just wide of the upright. It marked Childress' first win over Green Bay, bringing his career mark to just 1-5 against the Vikings' hated rivals.

"You put so much equity into this game, you need to let it go," Childress said. "I'm just so happy for those guys, like I said. Players, coaches, owners, fans. Just that they're able to do that. I'm happy to have that game ball, and I will paint it up and put it in a prominent spot."

At the site where Brett Favre had so many problems, Rodgers shared in his storied predecessor's struggles. While coming into the game as the NFL's best passer on third down, Rodgers converted only one third down through the air Sunday. At game's end, Rodgers had one of his worst performances to date, completing 15-of-26 passes for 142 and no touchdowns or interceptions.

It was Peterson, who is first in NFL history in rushing yards per home game with over 120, that got the praise of several Packers, including Collins.

"He's a great back," Collins said. "He wanted the ball at the end. They gave it to him."

Notes

Packers receiver Donald Driver recorded a reception in his 104th straight game, breaking Sterling Sharpe's franchise record...Green Bay leads the NFL in interceptions with 16...Minnesota's Charles Gordon broke his left leg on a punt return, and will miss the rest of the season...Packers linebacker Nick Barnett suffered a knee injury, and early indications say it may end his season.
