Jimmy Rollins Lead Phillies in Historical Walk-Off Win Over LA Dodgers

With swagger in his step, Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins made the on-field interview rounds following his walk-off double in Game Four of the NLCS. That familiar confidence seems to never leave the 2007 NL MVP—the pivotal hit that plated two runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers explains why.

With that hit, the Phillies defeated the Dodgers 5-4 and lead the NLCS three games to one.

Rollins and the Phillies became the third team in history that won a game with an extra-base hit when they were one out away from the loss—for once, it was the Dodgers on the losing end of the game.

The only other two teams to do it were the 1988 Dodgers (Kirk Gibson hit a home run off of Oakland A’s Dennis Eckersley in Game One of the World Series) and the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers (Cookie Lavagetto hit a double and broke up Bill Bevens no-hitter in Game Four of the World Series).

On Monday night, with Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton on the mound, Rollins was the last hope. As he stood at the plate, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel looked at Dodger Jim Thome and pointed to the outfield, indicating the longest-tenured Phillie was about to hit it that direction. Manuel may have called it, but it was Rollins who had a plan.

“Really it was funny, right before he threw it, I'd say hit a ball in the right center field gap,” Rollins said during the post-game press conference. “Kemp was playing me slightly to left center. Ethier was squeezing, I was like, ‘hit the ball in the gap right over Broxton's head, that's at least one run.’ And it went all the way to the fence, so we were able to get two and a victory.”

The team punctuated the victory with the obligatory dogpile with the Alameda, Calif. native Rollins curled up at bottom of the group, celebrating and protecting himself at the same time.

“Only thing I didn't want to do was get crushed, so I just kind of went in fetal position and started throwing punches, and whoever got hit, got hit,” explained Rollins. “Ben Francisco did a pretty good job of throwing his arm around my neck and restraining me, so I think I caught the worst of it. So it's a lot of fun, but that's what we do.”

As the stadium erupted with cheers for the defending Champs, fans in bars, homes, and across various forms of social media rejoiced in unison with the Phillies.

Philadelphia Phillies Ready For The Real Cole Hamels To Start NLCS

The postseason is the time of year when true fans endure ninth-inning heart palpitations and fair-weather fans pay closer attention and invest in playoff merchandise. More importantly, it’s when MLB teams’ reveal their true grit. It’s the season when the players either flourish or flounder.

Tonight, as the Philadelphia Phillies take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first game of the NLCS, the Phillies send Cole Hamels to the mound.

A year ago today, Cole Hamels sealed his 2008 NLCS MVP campaign by winning the deciding game against the Dodgers. In that series, Hamels went 2-0 and posted a 1.93 ERA.

Times have changed. Postseason Hamels of 2009 is not a sparkling as postseason Hamels of 2008.

The Phillies pitcher made his last start on Oct. 8 in Game Two of the NLDS against the Colorado Rockies. In that appearance, he pitched five innings, giving up four runs on four hits—including a two-run home run to the Rockies Yorvit Torrealba. Hamels earned the loss in that game—the only game that the Phillies gave up to the Rockies as they won the series 3-1.

It is, however, never too late to change things around.

Hamels has the ability to dominate. It is hard to ignore that this is the man that was named NLCS and World Series MVP in 2008 as went 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA (7 ER, 35.0 IP) in his five starts. He is the man who has the lowest postseason ERA (2.70) in Phillies history; the team needs that man to start tonight.

The offense has been performing well this postseason, batting a combined .296 in the NLDS, which was their highest team batting average in franchise history for a playoff round. The bats must remain hot in this series as they face the competitive offense that the Dodgers send to the plate.

Tonight’s matchup between Hamels and the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw is a repeat of Hamels’ last start against Los Angeles. In that game, Hamels gave up only five hits as he pitched a complete game and his third career shutout—leading the Phillies to a 3-0 win.

Philadelphia Phillies Must Focus on 2009 Title Defense, Forget 2008 Title

Welcome to the 2009 MLB Postseason, Philadelphia Phillies and fans.

It's time to suppress the thoughts of revenge for 2007 and set aside the swagger that comes with the winning the 2008 World Series. The Phillies are playing October baseball for the third year and row, but every year is different.

While playoff baseball delivers a clean slate for all the participants, it's hard to ignore performances during the regular season. Based on the 162 games that led to this point, there are things the Phillies need to get past the tenacious Colorado Rockies that wasn't an issue in 2008.

Jimmy Rollins needs to continue his hot offensive performance. He was uncharacteristically cool in the entire first half of the season, but once he returned to form in the second half, the team followed.

Since July 1, the longest tenured Phillies player put up strong numbers—.285 BA, 28 doubles, 15 home runs, and 50 RBI. In that span, the team's .696 winning percentage was the highest in the National League and second highest in the Majors behind the New York Yankees (.783 percent).

In addition to a strong leader, the Phillies also need their 2008 World Series MVP to return to that level that brought about the prestigious award. In the championship year, ace Cole Hamels went 4-0 in five games. He pitched 35 innings, giving up seven runs, and striking out 30.

During the 2009 regular season, Hamels went 10-11 with a 4.32 ERA. Clearly, the Phillies need 2008 postseason Hamels to show up. The team cannot consistently put up 10+ runs to support the starting pitchers who struggle.

If it were possible for the Phillies to defeat each opponent in a blow out, that would be one way to relieve stress caused by the 2009 bullpen. This year's bullpen is definitely not the dependable 'pen of 2008.

Last year Brad "Lights Out" Lidge led the dominant bullpen with his perfect season. This year, however, the closer has blown 11 saves and the confidence many have in his abilities. In 2008, the bullpen had a 3.22 ERA, while this year they have earned a 3.91 ERA.

The inconsistency of the bullpen is what may hurt them the most—especially against the wily Rockies who are skilled in come-from-behind wins.

It's possible, however. The Philadelphia Phillies have experience. They have skill. They have confidence. If the team can harness all the elements and have them work in unison, they may be first to 11 wins.

Welcome to 2009 MLB Postseason play. May the games begin, although they will begin at the most horrible time (11:35 a.m. PT/2:35 p.m. ET).

Philadelphia Phillies: Lidge Needs to Be Closer to Not Being The Closer

The Philadelphia Phillies have been a focal point for many reasons—they are the reigning World Series champions, they are on pace to win the NL East, and they have a menacing lineup, just to name a few.

Within that jovial clubhouse, one would find an assorted cast of characters. There are jokers, superstars, leaders, and perfectionists.

Phillies manager Charlie Manual has that country charm, that candid disposition, and boy is he fiercely loyal. His unwavering loyalty has been on display all season as he has continued to keep a struggling Brad Lidge in as closer while he leads the Major Leagues in blown saves with 11.

It’s understandable that Manual, a player’s manager, would want to show his closer trust that Lidge will pull out of the funk. “Lights Out” Lidge is in there, and good ol’ Chollie has been holding steadfast to the belief that the perfect closer from the 2008 season will resurface.

But when does one say, “enough is enough”?

While the Phillies flaunt a potent offense, it is not feasible to depend on the bats erupting against every opponent they face. Fans can wish, hope, and pray for Philadelphia to score 15 runs on a nightly basis, but it’s just not going to happen.

What has been happening is the once-untouchable Lidge has been unreliable. With every appearance, memories of his impact on the 2008 championship season becomes diminished—instead fans’ groans amplified by rattled nerves take their place.

The Phillies can’t afford to wait any longer. Patience is one thing, foolishness is another. Lidge may be psychologically affected if he loses his job, but what have all these blown saves done for the entire team’s psyche?

The 2009 playoffs is not the stage to watch it play out. The star’s spotlight has burned out: It’s time to bring in the understudy.

Philadelphia Phillies: What Goes Up Must Come Down

Why does one study history? One reason to review the past is to know the possibilities of the future.

In the past two years, the Philadelphia Phillies have been successful in the second half of the season—especially in September. With most of the core players from the 2008 World Championship team returning, it is safe to feel confident that the Phillies will advance to the post-season despite the struggles from key pitchers Cole Hamels and Brad Lidge.

September has been the best month for the team in 2007 and 2008—years when the Phillies advanced to the playoffs. In their 2007 NL Wild Card-winning year, they had a .607 winning percentage in the last month of the regular season. In the following year, their September winning percentage improved to .680 and the team ended up winning the World Series.

When one reminisces about the Phillies playoff run of last season, the 2008 World Series MVP Hamels and then-undefeated closer Lidge are two names that cannot be ignored. With those two arms in the Phillies arsenal, the team was unstoppable.

This year, when those celebrated pitchers make their way to the mound, a cloud of uncertainty hovers above them.

Like the Law of Gravity taught us: what goes up must come down.

Two key players of 2008 may be struggling, but their inconsistencies won’t cause Philadelphia to struggle. Yes, Hamels and Lidge were the losing pitchers in half of the team’s losses in August, but since Aug. 11, the Phillies have posted a 2.79 ERA (50 ER, 161.1 IP)—second in the Majors.

The Phillies lead the Majors in number of home runs allowed in the ninth inning (19), number of losses after leading in the eighth innings (seven), and rank second with 60 runs allowed in the ninth.

Conversely, the Phillies lead the NL in runs (662), HR (184), RBI (637), and SLG% (.451) as they sit comfortably in first place in the NL East.

The Philadelphia Phillies are a strong team that has enough talent that when one aspect of the team is dragging, another will pick them up and carry the team to a win. The unpredictable performances from Hamels and Lidge are not enough to cause the potent Phillies to flounder.

What goes up must come down, but the Phillies aren’t showing signs of returning to sub-World Champion form as of yet.

Next up for the Phillies…Coming to town as their first challenge of September will be the NL Wild Card-leading San Francisco Giants. Philadelphia will be facing a San Francisco team that has been playing well—going 5-1 in the last seven days—and need to continue their September domination in order to cool the visitors in the three-game series.

Earlier in the season, the Giants won three games in the four-game series versus the Phillies in San Francisco. Even with their success, the Giants are aware that Philadelphia is still a dangerous team.

"They're solid. They're the World Champions," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said following their win over the Colorado Rockies on Aug. 30. "We're going to have to go there and play our best ball—we know it."

The next three games may possibly serve as an appetizer for a possible playoff matchup come October as long as both teams continue to ride the wave of success that they have been on in the second half of the season.

Philadelphia Phillies Need to Get Back on Track Before It's Too Late

For any team to be a success, when one part of the group struggles, the rest must have the ability to pick up the slack.

Currently, the Philadelphia Phillies have a nice cushion in the NL East, but with their struggles of late, the team needs to revert back to their dominant ways.

In today’s game against the Florida Marlins, the Phillies tried to avoid being swept, but lost 12-3. Their offensive woes continued today as the Phils managed to go 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position, and only accrue six hits.

Aside from their hitting woes, the Phillies lackluster pitching staff allowed those 12 runs on 19 hits.

This season, no one has been able to figure out whether the Phillies pitching will improve. Even with the addition of Cliff Lee, one can’t help but look at the surrounding cast of starters and still not feel completely confident.

Which Cole Hamels will show up? Will the trickster Jamie Moyer appear? Will Joe Blanton still receive no run support?

To add to the pitching worries, relief pitchers JC Romero, Chad Durbin, and Clay Condrey are still on the disabled list. Starters Brett Myers, Antonio Bastardo, and Pedro Martinez join them in the infirmary.

On the offensive end, although shortstop Jimmy Rollins has been on fire lately, the winds surrounding him may fuel his fire, but they are cooling off some of his fellow infielders.

Second baseman Chase Utley is hitting .242 in the last month. In the few games the Phillies have played in August, the All-Star is 3-for-24 (.125).

The other All-Star infielder on the team, Ryan Howard, has had struggles of his own. He hasn’t hit a home run since Jul. 27 and in August he’s gone 7-for-28 (.250).

If there was one thing the Phillies have been consistently good at, it’s their defense.

However, in the past 30 days, that, too, has suffered with the Phils committing 14 errors. Their porous .985 fielding percentage is ahead of only the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, and Washington Nationals.

The Philadelphia Phillies have the talent. They have the experience. They have the title of 2008 World Series Champions.

With the season flying by, will the Phillies refocus and get all their pieces functioning correctly before those pesky Marlins take full advantage of the underperforming Phillies?

SAN FRANCISCO—Cliff Lee, the Philadelphia Phillies’ newest starter, sure does know how to make an entrance.

In his first appearance in a Phillies uniform, Lee held on to a no-hitter until the sixth inning, when San Francisco Giants second baseman Juan Uribe hit a double into right field.

The Phillies went on to win the game 5-1.

The Lee acquisition was followed a failed attempt at getting Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay, but no one on the Phillies’ side is complaining. Pitching a complete game, Lee held the Giants to four hits and one run in his fourth complete game of the season.

“I knew I didn’t give up any hits yet, but whatever. I’m kind of glad I didn’t throw a no-hitter,” Lee said following the game. “If I did that in the first time, I would be having to live up to some high expectations.”

Lee didn’t just contribute with his arm, he also worked some magic with his bat. The reigning Cy Young award winner went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

“When I got the first hit, I was pretty pumped about that,” Lee said. “When I got that double off the wall, I was still gassed. I totally never expected that.”

The dimensions in AT&T held the double in the park, but many believe that if Lee hit that ball in Citizens Bank Park, it would have been a home run.

“That’s what they were saying,” said Lee. “But it wasn’t here.”

Lee’s performance is exactly the type of outings the Phillies need to win another World Series Championship. The 30-year-old is sees the playoffs within reach.

“Obviously the ultimate goal is to get to the playoffs, but the way to do that is take it one day at a time,” Lee explained. “If everybody does their job and does what they need to do, then it should happen with talent we got in here.”

The Phillies needed a boost in their starting pitching and with Lee they got what they’ve been looking for. The Phils may hold the top spot in the NL East, but anything can happen from here to October. No matter what happens, Lee knows what he needs to do.

“Obviously this team has been winning a lot of games and I’m new to it,” Lee said. “My job is to come in and give the team a chance.”

If Mr. Clifton Phifer Lee continues dealing like he did today, he doesn’t just give him a chance, he provides them with a path to October baseball.

Philadelphia Phillies Look Beyond Loss to San Francisco Giants

SAN FRANCISCO—The World Champion Philadelphia Phillies are in San Francisco, but by the looks of the empty seats around the stadium, one wouldn't know. Now, 36,603 for tonight is greater than a usual Thursday night, but the Giants' Tim Lincecum drew more crowds than the defending champs did (The Freak drew 40,008 on July 27, his last start).

The atmosphere was playoff-ish, but the performance by the Phillies was not playoff-worthy. The team's defense was uncharacteristically sloppy. Pair that with a bad outing from Phillies starter Rodrigo Lopez and we get a one-sided game as the Phils lose 7-2.

Lopez went four innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on eight hits. Behind him, the defense committed three errors—so unexpected from a team that has the third best fielding percentage (tied with the LA Dodgers) in the Majors.

"Usually he [Lopez] is in command of his pitches—that hurt him," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Our defense put him in situations tonight that were tough for him."

Despite the losing streak, Manuel remains confident.

"We got beat tonight, but tomorrow, when we come out, this game is behind us," Manuel said. "When we leave the ballpark here, this game's behind us. Tomorrow when we come out, we come out tomorrow to win a game."

The Phillies' skipper knows his team and knows what's best for them.

"We adopted that about three years ago and it's worked for us and it's a good way for us to play. I give all the credit to our players and the fact of how much they like to play," Manuel explained. "Tonight, we didn't have a good game, but there’s a good chance we'll come back tomorrow and play good."

They definitely need to step it up and play well. They may be the team with the best road record, but as they face the Giants, the team with the highest winning percentage at home, it seems the home team has the advantage. Tomorrow, they look to turn things around as they send their newest starting pitcher, Cliff Lee, to the mound.

Phillies fans are eagerly awaiting the performance of the reigning 2008 AL Cy Young award winner. Manuel seems quite confident in Lee, as he faces Giants rookie Ryan Sadowski in the second game of the four-game series.

"He's a big-time pitcher and we'll put him in a jersey and see how he does," Manuel said. "We break him in as a Phillie tomorrow, so we’ll let him go. I'm sure he'll be okay."

July 31 is the day for Lee to show what he has to offer the Phillies. First step is to halt the losing streak and add to the best road record in baseball.

Philadelphia Phillies' J.A. Happ Making His Presence Known

With the All-Star Break behind them, the Philadelphia Phillies are back to work and ready for the last half of the season.

Noticeably successful is rookie pitcher J.A. Happ. Initially, he lost the starting job to Chan Ho Park in the beginning of the season, having to settle with a spot in the bullpen. As Park floundered, the two swapped spots and began to flourish.

This season, the 26-year-old Happ has been a star in the starting rotation. In 11 starts, he has pitched 72 1/3 innings, earning a 2.74 ERA—much better than the team’s ace Cole Hamels, who started 18 games earning a 4.72 ERA and a 5-5 record.

In Happ’s last five starts he has gone seven innings with a 1.46 ERA, either clearly securing his spot on the team or his trade value—something he is aware of.

"I'm going to tell you that it doesn't bother me," Happ said to reporters following his July 12 start, "but it gets into your head. I love being here. I love being on this team. I think I fit in well. But I'm also trying to prove I'm a big-league pitcher. I'm not in control of what's going on."

True, Happ has no control over the decision to trade or not to trade, but what he has shown is control over his performance.

In his July 19 start against the Florida Marlins, Happ pitched seven innings, giving up only five hits and no runs while striking out four. He worked his way out of a major jam—loading the bases with no outs and not allowing the Marlins to score.

With this strong outing, does Happ get to dig his heels a little deeper and stay with the Phillies? Or does this mean the Phils have a stronger chance of picking up Roy Halladay, who pitched a complete game against the Boston Red Sox, allowing only one run, striking out seven, and earning the win?

Regardless of the whispers surrounding him, Happ remains focused.

"It's a long road," Happ said on July 12, "and you can never predict what's going to happen, but I'm feeling more comfortable with each start."

It showed as Happ earned his seventh win in the Phillies 5-0 win over the Marlins on July 19.

With the win, the Phillies swept the Marlins, and now lead the division by seven games—the largest lead this late in the season since July 29, 1993.

Philadelphia Phillies Woes: Once Pitching Improves, Success Will Follow

As the Philadelphia Phillies enter tonight’s game with the threat of being swept by the Atlanta Braves, the grumblings about the team’s losing ways has been growing with every popup, error, and run allowed.

Fingers have been pointed various directions—namely World Championship hangover, slumping bats, and injured players.

Many look at shortstop Jimmy Rollins’ struggles as a key reason the Phils have been sliding downhill. Following Wednesday’s game, he extended his hitless streak and now is 0-for-27. True, it’s hard to ignore the team’s leadoff hitter in the worst slump of his career, but the 2007 NL MVP is not the sole reason for the team’s recent failures.

Philadelphia is second the National League in runs scored (392) and lead in slugging percentage (.446). It’s the pitching that hurts.

Their bullpen, featured on MLB Network’s “The Pen,” is not the flawless bullpen of last year. The bullpen's cumulative ERA stands at 4.08—19th in the Majors. With injuries sidelining Brad Lidge earlier and now Clay Condrey and Scott Eyre, the relief pitchers’ health is something not easily overlooked.

The bullpen woes aren’t what are doing the most harm, however. The starting pitching is ranked 28th in the Majors with a 5.31 ERA—ahead of only the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles, both last place in their respective divisions.

As a reflection of how deep the starting pitching problems go, in Wednesday’s game, Phillies ace Cole Hamels lasted only four innings, giving up nine runs in that short outing. It wasn’t too long ago that Hamels was being paraded around the city and on the small screen as he was the widely celebrated World Series MVP.

With all of this in mind, things are not where many hoped they would be, but the Phillies are still in first place in the NL East. With a little more than half a season left, it’s not time for people to give up on the reigning Champs.

No, Seriously, MLB's Diamond and Cubic Zirconia of May: Joe Mauer

Diamond of May: Minnesota Twins' Joe Mauer

In May, the Twins’ Mauer ranked in the top five in five of the nine hitting categories in the MLB.

The catcher led the Majors in batting average (.414), and slugging percentage (.838), while ranking second in runs (27), home runs (11), and RBIs(32).

His hitting prowess is not a common thing for a catcher. In fact, his performance in May even set a team record for a pitcher. In May of 1961, Harmon Killebrew had twenty nine RBI and Mauer bested that stat by three.

While the All-Star says he hasn’t changed anything about his swing, he admits he has been seeing the ball better.

Mauer remains a constant threat in the lineup as he leads the Twins, who are three and a half games behind the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers.

(continue to the Cubic Zirconia and Sparkly Icing of May)

Philadelphia Phillies Arms Struggle, but Incite Hope

When a team wins the World Series, the natural expectation is for that team to perform well the following season. It’s uncommon for the champions to return with a crippling weakness, but it happens.

Welcome to the Philadelphia Phillies of 2009. The World Champions have been less-than-stellar of late and the cause of this can be found standing in the middle of the diamond. The bats may be potent, while inconsistent, but the starting rotation is appalling.

The Phillies are in the bottom three in the National League giving up 156 runs with a 5.39 ERA and are dead last in home runs allowed (53).

Ace Cole Hamels has an ERA of 6.17—definitely not World Series MVP numbers. Sad thing is that Hollywood Hamels does not own the worst ERA of the starters. Actually, only Brett Myers posted better numbers with a 4.81 ERA, owns the best ERA on the team, although it’s slightly worse than the league average.

The once reliable veteran, Jamie Moyer, has the most wins (three) of all the Phillies’ starters, but has the team-high 7.26 ERA.

So what’s happening with the starters? Was it the extra month of work? The offseason distractions? Whatever the cause, there must be a solution.

Each pitcher has had games where they were dominant. Even fifth starter Chan Ho Park showed he was worthy by engaging in a pitcher’s battle with the Mets’ Johan Santana. Park pitched six innings of one-hit ball without giving up a run.

The ability is there and the ballplayers to fix what’s wrong—quick. The offense can’t and hasn’t be able to carry the non-lethal Phillies’ arms.

If the starting rotation was undeniably horrible, then fans can boo and everyone will accept the fact that last year was last year and it is time to move on. The curious thing is that the starters have had moments of brilliance—moments that injected patience into the veins of Phillies followers.

True, the rotation is struggling, but they will find their way back to stability. Whether or not it will be too late is yet to be seen.

Philadelphia Phillies: Still the National League's Best

"The 0-2 pitch, swing and a miss! Struck him out! The Philadelphia Phillies are 2008 World Champions of baseball! And let the city celebrate!” It was seven months ago that the legendary Harry Kalas made the proclamation that marked the beginning of exuberant celebrations in the City of Brotherly Love.

There was a massive parade down Broad Street. There were speeches, including the bestowing of the infamous title, “World F---ing Champions,” upon the team from their second baseman. Then there were TV shows, banquets, appearances, and filming of commercials.

Oh, and there was a little ring ceremony.

Now the team is in the midst of their reign as World Champions. As the current kings, the team will either burn under the heat or bask in the inherited spotlight coming from the magnifying glasses that hover over their every move. Many look at the Phillies and wonder if the perpetual underdogs will repeat or if last year was a fluke.

The Phillies are the real thing.

While the team has their fair share of problems—ahem, starting pitching, ahem—they compensate with other factors. 22 of the 25 players that were on the team’s 2008 post-season roster have returned, keeping the core of the championship team intact.

Last year, the team had stretches when they struggled with their feast-or-famine offense and this year is no different. The last two games are a perfect examples—May 5th, the team piled on the hits in their 10-7 victory over St. Louis, but on May 6th the team couldn’t put up a run against the New York Mets, leaving seven on base.

Philadelphia is not alone with this problem, but their resiliency early in 2009 sets them apart from other teams.

In their first eight wins, the Phillies came from behind in each one. Philadelphia is the only National League team in history to start the season in that fashion, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

While the offense may stumble, it is potent enough to carry the team and make up for the unpredictable starting pitching.

Currently, the reigning World Champions’ pitching staff owns the worst ERA in the National league with a .583 ERA. Phillies’ ace Cole Hamels admitted he wasn’t prepared for the season and now has a 7.27 ERA. The rest of the starting rotation, with the exception of ol’ faithful Jamie Moyer, have not been up to par. Surprisingly, Brett Myers leads the group with a 5.35 ERA.

Brad Lidge is no longer perfect, but no one expected him to save every game for the rest of his career. Blowing a save may have been a good thing, as it takes the focus away from which game will bring that “L” next to his name. The bullpen will remain stable, especially with the Ryan Madson-Lidge combination. Jack Taschner may be this year’s questionable reliever, based on his performance with the San Francisco Giants.

This year’s Phillies still possess the menacing offense that opposing teams fear (even through their slumps) and have added another weapon to their arsenal.

Offseason acquisition Raul Ibanez wasted no time in proving that he is worthy of the Phillies’ pinstripes. In the first 25 games, Ibanez has the sixth highest batting average (.347) in the NL. Second baseman Chase Utley joins him in the top ten, tied for seventh was a .333 batting average.

On the opposite end, shortstop Jimmy Rollins had an uncharacteristically slow start, hitting an abysmal .207 in March and April. Luckily, the former MVP has been warming up and his batting average has been steadily climbing away from the Mendoza line.

Philadelphia has been known as one of those teams that are routinely slow starters. While the old cliché says, “You can’t win a championship in April,” the month does serve as a preview of what’s to come.

Sitting atop the NL East after 25 games, the Phils are experienced and hold a clear understanding of what makes them a winning team. While the offense is their biggest threat, it’s the team’s tenacity and championship swagger that gives them the extra push to remain the National League’s best team.

Sidenote

One member of the Phillies family that will be sorely missed is long-time Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas. After his death, the team seemed to lack the lightheartedness that was normally seen in the dugout and on the field. The team once again displays their fun-loving nature, but the adoration and respect they hold for Kalas is seen every day through the "HK" patch worn over their hearts.

Harry Kalas: Saying Goodbye to a Legend

In the past week, the baseball world has been saddened by news of numerous people passing, including long-time Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas.

To many, including myself, baseball is more than just a sport; baseball is an element of one’s life.

Growing up, games were affordable for my family and it grew to represent the familial bonds we possessed, even when it wasn’t apparent on the outside.

From a young age, baseball was the security blanket that traveled with me as I evolved as a person and saw many aspects of my world go through the cyclic nature of (re)building, collapsing, and flourishing.

Yesterday, hearing the news Kalas’ death made me feel like I lost a family member.

Earlier in the decade, searching for an escape from the stress of school, I found the Phillies and their primarily-East Coast playing times were perfect. Along with the team came the voice. Kalas’ voice was distinctive, majestic, and powerful.

Eventually, it was that voice that became a source of warmth and stability in tumultuous times.

In 2007, the death of someone close put me in what felt like an inescapable abyss of guilt, pain, and sadness. My ascension to normalcy was slow and I subconsciously turned to what was a familiar band-aid in my life—baseball.

I immersed myself in the game, especially the Phillies. Almost daily, Kalas’ voice met me once I got home (thanks to the East Coast-West Coast time difference). I held on to the consistency and comfort I received from such a simple game and used it to pull me out of the paralyzing grief so I could heal.

It’s amazing how one person can impact the lives of so many—possibly without even knowing.

I was hoping that this would be the year I would meet Mr. Kalas and thank him for the great work he has done. Now, as he sits beyond this world, he can call the game for all those who have passed. My loved ones who now get to bask in the color of his voice can pass my message on to the great Harry Kalas.

Thanks for everything, Harry Kalas. The world has lost a legend, but your voice will never be forgotten.

Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants: Non-Baseball Tips for Fans

The best time of year is finally upon us, and while many are seasoned baseball fans, lessons that are learned through fan experience are oftentimes overlooked because of the overwhelming excitement.

As the days get longer and the New Year’s resolution-induced diet fades, it’s time to review the top three non-baseball nuggets of knowledge when it comes to being a Bay Area baseball fan.

Best Way to Get There

BART is our friend. To some, BART is the questionable friend with the dirty clothes and hygiene issues that we are hesitant to call, but when it comes down to it, BART is there for us.

If the Oakland Coliseum is the destination of the day, the journey is simple; hop on BART and exit at your stop—Coliseum/Oakland Airport. Go down the escalator or stairs, follow the rest of the crowd or the people selling $5 T-shirts and you’ll end up on a pedestrian bridge that will lead you right to the home of the Oakland A’s.

If AT&T Park is your ballpark of the day, the task is still simple, but not as easy as going to the Coliseum.

Your BART stop can be either Montgomery or Embarcadero—your choice! From there you have another decision: get to the park on foot or take Muni. There is nothing like strolling along the Bay with the Bay Bridge as your backdrop. If you would like to skip the extra exercise and hope onto the Muni, just hop on the train that is marked “ballpark” and you’re set.

Best Thing to Eat

Oakland doesn’t have the best variety when it comes to food, but one thing that stands out is their BBQ. Go behind section 104 and purchase the ribs or the Ball Tip Steak Sandwich.

If, instead, you are going for quantity rather than quality, the A’s offer “All-You-Can-Eat” seating for $35 in sections 316, 317, and 318. You get a beautiful aerial view of the ballpark and all the hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, peanuts, ice cream, and soda your stomach desires. The most difficult part of sitting in this section is not finding your way there (which is a beast), but dealing with the guilt of consuming so many calories.

AT&T Park wins the battle of the tasty treats easily. There are so many culinary delights in this park, that one trip is not enough to appropriately experience all it has to offer. Two dishes visitors must taste are the Crazy Crab’z Sandwiches and the Irish Nachos.

Behind the bleachers resides the home of the wonderful sandwich—fresh crab and tomatoes in two sliced garlic baguettes. The price may scare some people away, $15, but most people find it is worth every penny.

Murph’s Irish Pub is where you will find the park’s Irish Nachos. Steak fries covered with chili, cheese, and green onions—how can one go wrong? Oh, and don't forget the napkins.

Best Thing to Remember for Watching the Game

It’s going to get cold!

We get there, the weather is nice, then the sun goes down. 95 percent of the time, a Bay Area breeze will kick in and the thoughts of leaving early arrive with them.

Bring a blanket or an extra coat. There’s nothing more annoying that having to spend $50 on a blanket that barely covers you or on another team sweater to add to your “got cold at the ballpark” collection. Don’t be deceived!

Don't Forget...

As we delve deeper into the season, one thing Bay Area fans must never let go of is hope. Whether it’s the A’s or Giants—even the Raiders, Niners, or Warriors—the true fans are resilient.

Each season starts with hope—Oakland brought in the big bats and San Francisco has the arms, so fans' hopes are fueled.

After 162 games taking BART, eating a day’s worth of calories in one meal, and freezing in the Bay Area fog, we’ll see if hope turns playoff dreams to reality in the 2009 MLB season.

San Francisco Giants: Tales From The Middle Infield

It is always a focal point when it comes to defense—the middle infield. There is nothing more impressive than a pair of middle infielders pirouetting their way through a seemingly impossible double play. The shortstop and second baseman play nine innings with daily unspoken implied importance.

As non-Texas Ranger Omar Vizquel made his appearance against the San Francisco Giants, his value to the fans was made obvious through the warm applause that greeted him. Always a gentleman, the Gold Glover was humble when asked about the situation.

“Here, I don't know. Maybe some people will remember me here,” Vizquel said to Chris Haft, Giants beat writer for MLB.com. “It feels weird, being clapped by the fans in that way. It feels really emotional, I would say."

On the San Francisco side of things, the second baseman battle between Kevin Frandsen and Emmanuel Burriss continues.

At this point, Frandsen has played in 27 games hitting .286 with 11 runs, five RBI, five doubles, one home run, and one stolen base.

Burriss, on the other hand, has appeared in 25 games and earned a .362 BA with 13 runs, nine RBI, four doubles, one triple, and four stolen bases.

Injury has slowed Frandsen’s progress, who was once looked upon as the future star of the Giants. The team’s recent decision to see Frandsen’s performance at other infield spots may be an indication that Burriss may be pulling away in the race.

After Burriss’ strong showing from last season, the team may be more confident with the 24-year-old.

Also vying for a spot on the Opening Day roster is Juan Uribe. Today the 30-year-old went yard twice in the Giants’ losing effort against the Rangers. With his spring showing, it looks as if Uribe has earned his place on the team as a utility infielder.

The Giants have 32 players on their current roster and will be cutting the last seven in the next few days.

San Francisco Giants: Taschner Out, Paulino In Then Out, Correa In

Fifteen minutes before the press release was sent out, Phillies beat writer for MLB.com Todd Zolecki broke the news on twitter: the SF Giants traded pitcher Jack Taschner for Phillies catcher Ronny Paulino.

Paulino spent the last four years with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In December, the Phils obtained the catcher in return for catcher Jason Jaramillo.

Paulino was out for two months last season with an ankle sprain, but in 2007 had a career year—going yard 11 times and batting 55 runs.

Paulino’s Spring Training performance has been less than stellar, hitting .185 (5-for-27) with one double, one home run, and two RBI in 12 games. The trade indicates Phillies will stay with Chris Coste as the back-up catcher.

Jack Taschner earned an 8-4 record with a 5.01 ERA in 178 relief appearances with the Giants. In 2008, he went 3-2 with a 4.88 ERA in 67 games.

During Spring Training, Taschner appeared in eight games and earned a 6.23 ERA with eight strikeouts and 12 walks.

On Tuesday, he revealed that he felt he wasn’t going to be in a Giants uniform for long.

next page...

Venezuela-USA Preview: Team Venezuela Ready For Team USA in WBC

Ah yes, Miami in March—the beach, bikinis, and the World Baseball Classic. Before Team USA and Team Venezuela head south toward the warm weather, they must play to determine the winner of Pool C.

The two teams meet at 3:30 p.m. PT today. Venezuela, high off their 10-1 power-hitting win against Team Italy, appeared ready for the challenge at the post-game press conference.

“The last WBC, we didn’t hit well,” said Venezuela’s catcher Ramon Hernandez. “Now, at least all the hitters—it’s a good sign that they came more prepared.”

Bobby Abreu, who contributed a home run in the team’s fifth inning barrage of homers, echoed Hernandez’s statements.

Oakland A's Spring Training: Images of the Week

With 11 spring training games completed, the Oakland A’s stand in the middle of the pack in the Cactus League. The A’s 6-5 league record doesn’t quite reflect the pursuit of postseason play that seems to have taken shape in the winter months.

But, this is spring training. Pitchers are just warming up, hitters are finding their swings, and borderline players are trying to fight their way onto the roster. It’s safe to say, what happens in Arizona stays in Arizona—hopefully.

In this past week, the A’s have gone 5-2 (three wins and one loss with a split squad), scoring in the double-digits in two of those wins.

This week has also brought:

Nomar Garciaparra and Orlando Cabrera are introduced as new members of the Oakland A’s

Jason Giambi being hit by pitches three times in one game

A strong outing from Brett Anderson

Another delay for the return of Eric Chavez

SF Giants Have a Motivator and Mentor in Randy Johnson

Fans poured into AT&T Park for KNBR 680/Giants FanFest in high spirits on Feb. 7. Orange and black infused the home of the San Francisco Giants, as familiar ballpark aromas teased anxious fans.

Months of yearning led many to devour their favorite delicacies. Long lines leading to players signing autographs filled the halls—one fan was even able to coax Dave Roberts into an impromptu arm-wresting match. Some explored the muddy field that will be miraculously flawless come April 7.

The field may not be ready, but the Giants let fans know that the team is prepared for success in 2009.

Nestled in the confines of the lively park was a room in which Randy Johnson spent a little under half an hour speaking to the media. In that time, the Giants’ newest starting pitcher spoke about joining the organization and his role on the team.

This may be the beginning of the, as Johnson says, “last chapter” of his baseball career, but finds it appropriate that he is now with the Giants.

“My baseball career started back in Livermore—playing little league baseball in the Grenada Little League, and then playing Babe Ruth, and then attending Livermore High and playing four years there, and then getting a scholarship to play at USC," Johnson shared. "You know, it really has come full circle.”

His path has led him to San Francisco, where he is now looked upon as the wise sage of the team. The Big Unit is aware that he is surrounded by youngsters and knows he can make a difference in their careers. With so much experience, he believes he can serve as mentor for the young starters in more ways than one.

Another Day, Another Delay in Noah Lowry's Return for the Giants

On the day that San Francisco Giants youngsters Travis Ishikawa and Nate Schierholtz were flexing their guns, Noah Lowry had to rest his.

The left-hander, who is battling it out with Jonathan Sanchez for the fifth spot in the rotation, felt some discomfort in his elbow. Lowry will be sidelined for at least two days because of the “cranky” feeling.

Giants Lefty Jonathan Sanchez Eager To Represent Puerto Rico in WBC

For a moment, San Francisco Giants pitcher Jonathan Sanchez provided hope during the dreary 2008 season.

Although he ended the season 9-12, Sanchez' performance in June invoked optimism into AT&T Park. In that month, the 26-year-old went 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA.

This Spring, he will be a part of Puerto Rico’s team in the World Baseball Classic. Aiming to be the No. 3 starter on the team, Sanchez began preparing early. Although he faces a daunting Dominican Republic team in his first actual game, the task doesn’t intimidate him.

"Every game's big," said Sanchez. Playing for one’s country always brings out the patriotism in every player and the lefty is no different.

Phillies' JC Romero Given Unfair Punishment by MLB

People everywhere are fully aware of the embarrassment Major League Baseball has endured due to the huge performance-enhancing drug fiasco. Today’s MLB wants the world to know that they are no longer going to look aside if players are found to have any banned substances in their system. So, what happens when there’s a gray area? Will the players always be punished in order for MLB to maintain the shiny halo above its head?

Today, Major League Baseball will announce that Philadelphia Phillies middle reliever J.C. Romero will be receiving a 50-game suspension for violating the league’s substance policy. He has been found guilty of “negligence” and will start serving the suspension at the beginning of the 2009 season.

No biggie? Well, ESPN’s Peter Gammons brought up some good points that makes this suspension seem unfair.

Romero went to a GNC in Cherry Hill, NJ and purchased over-the-counter supplements. The MLBPA informed MLB players that over-the-counter supplements were acceptable and would not contain anything that would cause the players to fail a drug test. He checked with numerous sources to make sure in did not contain any banned substances. He received the thumbs-up and that was that.

Giants Sign Randy Johnson and Welcome Home The Big Unit

Although a day late, the San Francisco Giants revealed what Santa has been working on this holiday season. Pitcher Randy Johnson signed a one-year contract with the Giants on Dec. 26 for an undisclosed amount.

The 45-year-old is a five-time Cy Young Award winner and will be looking to join the elusive 300-win club. Johnson is five wins shy of the 300 mark and will be the 26th pitcher to hit the milestone.

Johnson proved to be successful in 2008 after missing most of the 2007 season dealing with a back injury that eventually led to the removal of a surgically repaired disc. During the season, Johnson started 30 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks earning an 11-10 record and a 3.91 ERA. Among National League pitchers, he ranked 3rd with a 3.93 K/BB ratio and was 6th with 8.46 K/9. He moved up to second on the all-time strikeout leaders list, finishing the season with 4,789 SO. His 100th career complete game was recorded on Sep. 28 against the Colorado Rockies.

Manny Pacquiao: Pride Of The Philippines

Almost two weeks have passed since Manny Pacquiao defeated Oscar De La Hoya in “The Dream Match.” The welterweight bout ended when De La Hoya’s corner decided to end the fight after the eighth round. As he approached the center of the ring, De La Hoya was greeted by an always humble Pacquiao.

“You’re still my idol,” the victor revealed to De La Hoya.

“No, you’re my idol,” replied the Golden Boy.

This changing of the guard has been a long time coming. Finally, the spotlight has shifted to the pride of the Philippines, Manny Pacquaio.

Las Vegas not only hosted the fight on Dec. 6th, it also housed a large contingent of Filipino Pacquiao fans. The neon lights of the strip did not emit as much energy as the fans that walked below them. That weekend, the air of debauchery was stifled by the excitement of boxing fans.

For many who made the pilgrimage to the city of sin, Pacquiao is seen as a national hero. I happened to stay at the same hotel as the fighter and the crowd of Filipino fans never left the hotel lobby. Each time I exited the elevator, faces of hope turned into faces of disappointment as the doors parted to reveal a Filipino woman, and not the man they’ve all been waiting for.

Lucky fans were treated to Pacquiao sightings, however. After my arrival, my companions and I decided to find something to eat before we soaked up the pre-fight atmosphere. Moments after we exited the elevator, the 5’6” southpaw appeared with his massive entourage in tow.

One would think the fighter would be the first to enter one of three awaiting limos, but he was the last one in. He made sure his people were all settled in their limo of choice, entered one, and was whisked away to the weigh-in.

Each tiny gesture contributes to why many Pacquiao fans feel a sort of kinship to a man they never met.

During pre-fight interviews, a group of female twenty-somethings glowed as they listened to him speak. The group explained that through his unaffected demeanor, they find his approachable and familiar.

“He’s just like my uncle,” explained one woman from the group.

When stats revealed Pacquiao was the tender age of 29 (now 30), the group laughed realizing he was much younger than he seemed.

Many fans see themselves when they look at Pacquiao. Each time he enters a packed stadium, a boyish grin creeps onto his face as if it was his first time headlining a major fight. The honesty in his expression is just one reason fans are charmed by the Filipino fighter. He is part of the people. He is a world class fighter without fear of looking like part of the hoi polloi.

In a time where a Filipino face is rare in mainstream media in the U.S., Filipino-Americans feel a sense of pride seeing a fellow Filipino take the boxing world by storm. He is not just a fighter in their eyes, he is a symbol of possibility.

Stay tuned for confirmation about the May 2 bout between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton...

Oakland Coliseum: Reputation Not Aligned With Reality

I fell in love with baseball the moment I passed through the turnstiles of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. While I was quite young, the magical world I entered was appraised correctly. Many days were spent in the concrete walls of the ballpark that sat minutes away from home. Never, even as a child, did I feel unsafe. Apparently, according to an article written by Ken Rosenthal, MLB players feel differently.

“The A's rarely are major players in free agency, but the agent said that the poor working conditions and occasionally unruly crowd behavior at McAfee Coliseum are turnoffs for his clients.

‘Many players are uncertain about the atmosphere,’ the agent said. ‘They're not as comfortable going to work there or having their families attend games there on a regular basis.’”

From visiting a number of ballparks across the country, I’ve learned each has character—fans contribute to the charisma of every stadium. Fans in Oakland never appeared more extreme than fans in different cities. Granted, I’m not a part of a player’s family nor have I sat in their section, but I have occupied the cheap seats of the Coliseum and always felt safe.

Every game has that belligerent fan that starts a fight with anyone without enough sense to walk away, but that occurs everywhere. Oakland fans are vocal and passionate, albeit few in numbers. Only one team inspires me to wear a visitor’s jersey in Oakland and when that series comes around, I get heckled. Not so nice words may be thrown my way, but it’s all in the spirit of competition. Safety was never an issue in the Oakland Coliseum.

San Francisco May Be Entering C.C. Sabathia Bidding War

Louder rumblings are being heard about the San Francisco Giants getting ready to make free-agent C.C. Sabathia an offer.

The word is that a 6-year, $100 million deal is the lure the Giants will be leaving out for the Bay Area native. Most see the thought of playing near his hometown of Vallejo, Calif. as incentive to play in San Francisco-even if it's for less money.

Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury has sources who reveal the opposite. His source revealed the Giants are not making any offers, but may be still in the hunt.

Sabathia is not expected to sign until Thanksgiving, as offers are slowly trickling in. The Yankees offered the pitcher $140 million for six years, while the Brewers offered $100 for five years.

The left-handed pitcher went 17-10 in 2008, with a 2.70 ERA. He pitched 253 innings and threw 10 complete games, five shut outs, while striking out 251. While a dominating pitcher, Sabathia can also swing the bat. In his 51 at-bats, he had a .235 BA, hitting one HR, two doubles, two HR, and seven RBI.

San Francisco Giants Fishing in a Lake of Dodger Blue

Reports surfaced that the San Francisco Giants are actively pursuing a number of players that donned Dodger blue last season. Lefty reliever Joe Beimel, shortstop Raphael Furcal, and third baseman Casey Blake are among the names that have been tossed around.

It’s pertinent that the Giants address their needs in the bullpen. In 2008, it was already established that the offense was a weak point and it was disheartening seeing the bullpen damage many of the starting rotation’s work. How good would the addition of the 31-year-old Beimel be?

San Francisco Giants' Tim Lincecum Wins Cy Young

In a season when there were few stunning highlights for the San Francisco Giants, there was one constant provider: Tim Lincecum.

The Giants pitcher, who graces the cover of the new video game, “Major League Baseball 2K9,” was awarded with the 2008 National League Cy Young award by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, confirming what many fans already knew—Lincecum was the best pitcher in the National League, despite his team’s fourth place performance.

"Winning the Cy Young Award is truly an amazing honor, and now having the opportunity to be on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K9 is another dream come true and an absolutely surreal experience," Lincecum reflected upon winning the prestigious award.

“The Freak,” as many have come to call him, made a strong push for the award toward the end of the season, seemingly the top goal for the team in the closing months. Quite the critic when it came to his performances, Lincecum was more focused on the game than the award.
