Michael Vick Returning at Perfect Time

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has been through a lot in the past year. He was arrested for his involvement in a dog fighting ring, and sentenced to prison. Before his arrest, Vick was the highest paid player in the NFL, and arguably one of the most athletic at the quarterback position.

Before his return, Vick will be working as an employee at a construction business making $10 an hour. After that, he needs the okay from NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell, who has said that Vick will have to show true remorse for his actions in order to be reinstated to the league.

If, in fact, everything falls in place, and Vick returns to the league, he is coming back at the perfect time. Why, you ask? The reason is because of the popularity of the wildcat offense.

The Wildcat offense, as popularized by the Miami Dolphins last season, involves many option plays and running back direct snaps.

Vick would be perfect for this offense considering his speed and ridiculous athletic ability. Any team looking for an edge has already tried a variation of the wildcat in an attempt to repeat the Dolphins. Vick would be able to come in and provide speed at the position, as well as a bullet of an arm out of the pocket.

What would make Vick so dangerous in this offense is he would be able to run many options because he has the ability to take the ball and run himself, and even play wide receiver on certain plays when the running back takes direct snaps.

Whatever team Michael Vick goes to, they will have to consider adding a few plays from the wildcat offense into their playbook.

Why Alex Rodriguez Will Be Forgiven By Baseball History

The top story around the sporting world this week? Non other than the turn up of a positive test for anabolic steroids by Alex Rodriguez. The test is said to be from 2003, and has shocked the baseball world.

A-Rod, in an exclusive interview, spoke with ESPN's Peter Gammons.

In the interview, Gammons asked A-Rod if he did in fact take performance enhancing drugs. In response, A-Rod admitted that during a time period from 2001-2003, he did take performance enhancing drugs.

When asked questions about what drugs, or how he attained them, he came back to the same answer. It was part of the "culture" of that time.

When speaking of this culture, he is referring to many MLB players testing and experimenting with different kinds of drugs, looking for an edge.

A-Rod also says several times in the interview, that in that time period ('01-'03), there were many substances that you could buy from GNC, that would be illegal in baseball now, perhaps referring to substances that he may have used at the time.

To most baseball fans, the image of Alex Rodriguez will be tarnished forever, and most will no longer recognize his successes as a baseball player.

In my mind, A-Rod will be forgiven by the baseball world.

First off, he was sincere. How many guys come right out and admit it?

Second, he used it in a time where there was no distinct rule stating that players could not use anabolic steroid (the drug tested positive for).

Third, A-Rod apparently refers to the "culture" of things back then, more than likely meaning that many players were involved. How many of these players have came out and admitted it?

Last, achievements. Its okay with me if you scratch off what he did between 2001-2003, but if in fact he has been clean since, than you can still recognize the numbers he has put up, including his MVP awards.

A-Rod may have used these drugs, but it seems to me that he will one day be forgiven by baseball.

What Denard Robinson Brings to the Table for Michigan Football

After an absolutely amazing signing day, Rich Rodriguez could not be more pleased with the players he brought in. One of these players is Denard Robinson.

Robinson is listed as an athlete, which means that he can play multiple skill positions, mainly quarterback. Robinson is a speedy QB, but is surprisingly accurate throwing the ball. In his senior year, Robinson threw for 1,800 yards and 15 TDs, along with 450 rushing yards and 8 more touchdowns.

What Robinson brings to the table is another quarterback. But Why was he such a big signing for Michigan? Just ask Rich. Robinson is the epitome of Pat White, Rodriguez's former star quarterback, and has very similar skills. Rich quite possible could be looking to use Robinson in the same way he used White at WVU.

On the other hand, Rich already has his guy at QB, another dual-threat, Tate Forcier. Forcier provides dead-on accuracy, along with speed to scramble when a play breaks down.

So where does Robinson fit in? He, along with Steven Threet, will backup Forcier, and potentially share snaps with Forcier, similar to Florida's offense in their 2006 championship year.

There is one last option for Robinson. That would be switching positions to defensive back, where he has shown he can succeed in the secondary.

Whatever Robinson does, he is a great pickup for Rich Rod and the UM Wolverines.

Michigan Recruiting: Rich Rod's Halfback Happenings

With a stacked defensive recruiting class, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez is on his way to creating a new and improved Wolverine team. With players such as Craig Roh and William Campbell coming in, the defense will have better depth and talent for the future.

On the other side of the ball, Rich has landed "the savior," quarterback Tate Forcier, who is said to be a lock for the starting job. Besides Forcier, the offensive players who are coming to Michigan have not been discussed much, especially the running backs.

Here is some insight on Michigan's incoming running backs, and what their respective roles will be for Michigan.

1. Fitzgerald Toussaint (Ohio)

Toussaint, perhaps the best-known of Michigan's incoming running backs, is ESPN's 28th back in the nation, and the top running back on Michigan's board.

At 5'9'', what Toussaint lacks in size, he makes up for with his strength and speed, qualities that make Toussaint a threat between the tackles. His deceptive speed and cutback ability will fit perfect with the spread offense.

2. Terric Jones (Michigan)

Jones is equal in height to Toussaint, at 5'9'', but weighs less (200 pounds to 186 pounds). With his speed and elusiveness, Jones, as well as Toussaint, is a perfect fit for the spread.

Jones runs great in the open field, and has the ability to go the distance every time he touches the ball. Look for him to make an impact in the years to come.

3. Vincent Smith (Florida)

Smith, another small running back, at 5'7'', provides decent speed after initial contact, but uses his strength to go straight up the middle. Smith can power his way through holes and bounce off tacklers.

With lots of work, and training, he could be used with the Michigan offense in his later years. Smith may not get much playing time this year.

With a defense-filled class, the running game is playing a huge part as well. It will be a strong part in the Wolverine's offensive attack next season, and will open up the passing game for "Forcier and Friends."

Michigans Offensive Playmakers In '09

Lets take a look at who is going to be making plays for Michigan on offense in 2009.

1. WR

Greg Mathews—Mathews proved that he could be Michigan's top receiver in 2008 and returning for his senior year, will lead Michigan in receiving statistics in 2009.

Martavious Odoms—Odoms, having a decent year as a freshman, will breakout in 2009, along with Mathews, to create a great 1-2 tandem at wide-out.

Junior Hemmingway—Although he was limited in touches in '08, Hemmingway will be given a little more attention in 2009 and put up solid numbers.

Darryl Stonum—Stonum started 10 games in 2008 as a freshman, and will as well be given more attention in the passing game, as he will be in his sophomore year.

2. QB

Tate Forcier—Forcier, the incoming freshman likely to start, has dead on accuracy and speed to make plays out of the pocket. Look for him to have a very good season in 2009.

Steven Threet—Although Threet lacked consistency in 2008, he will be given a fair shot at the starting position come the preseason.

3. RB

Brandon Minor—Minor, who had multiple amazing performances in 2008, is the clearest shot at starter, after hyped up YouTube phenomenon Sam McGuffie transferred.

Michael Shaw—It is being said that if Minor does not perform, Shaw will be right in there to replace Minor. Shaw has blistering up-field speed, with the ability to make defenders miss tackles.

Michigan has all the right pieces on offense for 2009, and it is up to the rest of the team to complete the puzzle.

Steve Breaston vs. Santonio Holmes: The Ohio State-Michigan Rivalry In The SB

With two talented offenses taking the field, the long-running Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is renewed once again.

Steve Breaston and Santonio Holmes, out of Michigan and Ohio State respectively, will both be lining up at wide receiver come Super Sunday. Breaston will line up for the Arizona Cardinals, and Holmes will line up for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Breaston, a 2007 graduate, totaled 1,252 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his Michigan career. Holmes, a 2006 graduate, totaled 1,746 yards receiving and 18 touchdowns in his Ohio State tenure.

Both players are similar. They recorded similar statistics in 2008—Holmes had 55 receptions for 820 yards and five touchdowns, while Breaston had 77 receptions for 1,000 yards and three touchdowns. Both players return kicks, and have similar kick returning stats. Each has one regular season return touchdown.

While both are not their teams' top options, look for both to make a difference on Sunday.

A Redleg Roster Run-Through: Cincinnati Reds Taking the Field in 2009

After countless seasons of absolute failure, the Reds, as they are every year, are looking to score some success in 2009. With 21 days 'til spring training, I would like to profile who will probably be on the Reds' 25-man roster come opening day.

Starting Pitchers

1. Edinson Volquez

Volquez, after coming off a ridiculous season, perhaps the best season by a Reds pitcher in recent history, is ready to do it again, and improve on his 17-6 record and 3.21 era.

2. Aaron Harang

Although he had a lackluster season, going 6-17, Harang is going to try to be what he was in 2006 and 2007, winning 16 games in both of those seasons.

3. Bronson Arroyo

With arguably his best season as a Red, going 15-11, Arroyo is looking to improve on what has been 4 straight ten loss seasons, and back to back seasons with an ERA higher than 4.00.

4. Johnny Cueto

Although he did not shine too bright in his rookie year, going 9-14 with nearly a 5.00 ERA, Cueto looked very good at times, and just needs to control his blistering mid to upper 90's fastball and limit his pitch count.

5. Micah Owings

Owings, a great addition for the Redlegs, is looking to build on what has been a demise for Reds starting pitchers.

Other possible starters include: Ramon Ramirez, Matt Maloney, Daryl Thompson, and maybe a last chance for Homer Bailey.

Infielders

1. Brandon Phillips, 2B

Phillips has been the Reds only consistently successful player. Phillips has led the Reds defensively, and has been quite consistent at the plate, hitting over .260 every season for the past three years, and hitting at least 25 home runs over the past two years.

2. Joey Votto, 1B

Votto solidified the starting first base job, with an amazing rookie year, almost hitting .300, and hitting 24 home runs, while playing a solid first base, only having 11 errors on the season. Votto could be the answer for the Reds, if he is willing to step up.

3. Jeff Keppinger, SS

After not playing a chunk of the 2008 season, Keppinger is looking to get back on track, to where he was in 2007, when he hit .331, in 67 games. Keppinger lets almost nothing by him at short stop, and will be a key attribute to the Reds' middle infield this season.

4. Edwin Encarnacion, 3B

After many seasons of double digit errors, many Reds' fans want to give up on this young third baseman. I would not give up yet, because he has talent at the plate, and proved it in 2008, hitting .251, while hitting 26 home runs. If Encarnacion can make less mistakes in the field, he will make a bigger impact in '09.

5. Ramon Hernandez, C

Hernandez is hopefully the savior for years and years of failed catchers in Cincinnati.

Outfield

1. Jay Bruce, RF

Bruce, probably the most exciting story of 2008, is back, and looking to feed off his rookie success. In only 108 games, Bruce totaled 21 home runs and 52 runs batted in. Bruce is looking to be the run producer for the Reds this year, after losing Adam Dunn, the Reds leading run producer for the past few years.

2. Willie Taveras, CF

Taveras was a great addition for Cincinnati. He provides great speed, and defensive skills, and although his OBP is a concern, when he gets on base, he most likely will steal second, and sometimes third, and atomically be in scoring position.

3. Jerry Hairston Jr., LF

Hairston will provide more speed in the outfield and will add another solid right handed bat to the Reds' lineup. In limited playing time in '08, Hariston hit .326.

Bullpen

1. David Weathers

Weathers has been the most consistent pitcher in the Reds bullpen over the last few years, and is looking to prove that once again this year.

2. Fransisco "Coco" Cordero

"Coco", had a great season closing for the Reds in '08. He racked up 34 saves, and is looking to build on it in '09.

With all the talent the Reds have, it looks like they just might compete for a playoff spot in '09. Call me crazy, but the Reds have the skill to contend.

Isaiah—Does His Name Ring a Bell?

Along with Craig Roh, Tate Forcier, Anthony LaLota, Taylor Lewan, and all of Michigan's other top recruits, Isaiah Bell has failed to get the attention as the previously mentioned recruits.

As listed by Scouts inc. Bell is the No. 11 safety in the country, and Michigans second ranked recruit.

Bell is the 95th overall recruit in ESPNU's top 150, and at 6'1, 210 pounds, and is a force to be reckoned with in the secondary.

Bell, who recorded 36 tackles in 2007 , while intercepting 4 passes at free safety, can also return kicks, and has the speed to do so.

Although he brings a dominating presence to the secondary, Bell is projected to switch to linebacker once he comes to Michigan. With his size, and abilities, he seems more fit to play linebacker anyways. If in fact he does switch positions, he would become only the second linebacker in the '09 recruiting class.

Bell, depending on what position he chooses, will get playing time in '09, weather its at safety, or linebacker.

Bell has been committed since March of '08, and will get his chance to play in the Big House, and is just one more great piece of the 2009 Michigan recruiting class.

To Finish or Not: A Final Note on Michigan's Recruiting Class

As most of us already know, Michigan is once again fielding a top recruiting class for 2009.

With names like Tate Forcier at QB, Craig Roh at DE, Taylor Lewan at OT, and Anthony LaLota at DE coming in to Michigan for 2009, the Blue and Maize of Ann Arbor will be more than ready to take on the Big Ten in '09.

Greg Robinson, most recently fired from the Syracuse head coaching job, has hopped on the Rich Rod train, and was announced as Michigan's new defensive coordinator yesterday.

After all the recruiting work that has been accomplished in the off-season, it still feels like something is missing.

It feels like the recruiting class is missing something, and Rodriguez and his team will do anything to fill that void.

Michigan is anything but done with its search for young, athletic prospects.

If you were wondering, the player in the picture above is Quinton Washington, the No. 6 guard in the nation, who is one of three top 150 players considering Michigan as an option.

If Michigan can land even one of these prospects, many Wolverine faithful will feel the recruiting class has been completed.

If they can land multiple, we could be looking at a top-ten Michigan Recruiting class.

As players continue to think over their decisions, lets take a look at some still considering Michigan.

1. Sam Montgomery, No. 2 DE, South Carolina.

If Rich can land Montgomery, it will take a lot of pressure off of incoming Craig Roh, and solidify Michigan's D-Line for the upcoming season. Although inexperienced in football, having played only one year, he has great athletic ability off the line.

2. Quinton Washington, No. 6 OG, South Carolina.

If Washington indeed selects Michigan, he will most likely red-shirt, as Michigan will have a solid O-line, due to the fact that many were red shirted last year. Although he is quite heavy, he can block very well.

3. Denard Robinson, No. 8 ATH (Multiple Positions), Florida.

If he decides to attend Michigan, with his raw athletic ability, Robinson will either play wide-out, or defensive back.

Although he played QB in high school, he is only 5-foot-11 and Michigan does not need a QB. He could possibly get a chance at quarterback in the future, but for now, he will be playing wide-out or DB, if he plays at all in his freshman year.

4. Marcus Hall, No. 13 OT, Ohio.

Hall is deciding between Michigan and Ohio State, and would not get early playing time with either team, and it does not seem like he is near a decision. Hall, again is a very talented blocker, and uses his 6-foot-5, 290 pound frame to his advantage.

5. Willie Ferell, No. 6 Inside LB, Florida.

With only one linebacker in Michigan's class so far, Ferell would be the finisher, on a linebacker empty class. Ferell is just an outstanding player, whether it comes to rushing the pass, stopping the run, or dropping back in coverage.

With signing day approaching, if Michigan can land one, or two of these top play-makers, they will have finished off an amazing recruiting class, and perhaps prepared Michigan even more, going in to the 2009 season.

Cincinnati Draft Past: A Look at Recent Bengals Draft History

After an abysmal 2008 season (4-11-1), the Cincinnati Bengals are looking to have a successful 2009 season. This starts with the 2009 NFL draft. The Bengals have the sixth pick, and will use it wisely.
With needs at many positions, strategy will be key, as to which positions to draft, and in what rounds to draft them.

Lets take a look at the how the Bengals have fared, in recent drafts.

A Hanging Chad: Life Without T.J. Houshmandzadeh or Ocho Cinco in Cincinnati

After going 4-11-1, the Bengals are definitely looking to improve off of last season's results. Star quarterback Carson Palmer missed most of the season, and the offense stalled until establishing the running game in the final three games of the year.

Come next season, Palmer should be ready and healthy, and the Bengals will be looking to compete for a playoff spot.

The main question surrounding the Bengals offseason was whether star wideouts T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Ocho Cinco would stay in Cincinnati. T.J. is a free agent this offseason, and Ocho Cinco wouldn't mind being moved, though he is under contract until 2010.

On a recent interview with ESPN radio, T.J. made it clear that he wanted to play on a team that is ready to contend for the playoffs, and it doesn't seem like he is too interested to stay in Cincinnati if things don't change. Houshmandzadeh has been near the top of the NFL in receptions over the past few years and would be a great addition to any team. There is no doubt he will receive big offers from many contending teams.

Ocho Cinco had his numbers decrease from '07 and wants out of Cincinnati. The Bengals could try to deal him because they no longer want to deal with him as a "distraction" to the team.

In the case that they both leave, who will fill their shoes? Many say the Bengals should draft Texas Tech stud receiver Michael Crabtree, but the real answer is already on the Bengals roster.

Speculation for the Bengals was that T.J. and Chad would be gone in the years to come, so they have started preparing for it, which could be like preparing for the worst.

In the 2008 draft, the Bengals drafted two wide receivers, Andre Caldwell out of Florida and Jerome Simpson out of Coastal Carolina University. Both had limited playing time in '08 but could see their playing time and stats increase with Palmer back at the helm.

Also, the Bengals will have Chris Henry, who, with a full season, has the chance to put up huge numbers (if he can stay out of trouble). Glen Holt, who, for most of the season, was the Bengals' kickoff returner, will have a chance to compete for more time at wide receiver. The same goes for punt returner Antonio Chatman.

The Bengals might be losing two of their biggest playmakers, but they are readily able to fill their shoes if need be.

Roh Your Boat: A Closer Look at Craig Roh

As most Michigan fans know by now, Coach Rich Rodriguez has landed the No. 4 DE in the nation, Craig Roh, out of Scottsdale, Arizona. Roh stands 6'4", 225 pounds. He is the 2008 ESPN Rise Arizona player of the year.

In 2007, Roh recorded 99 tackles, 48.5 for a loss, and 15.5 sacks, while recovering five fumbles.

Roh will provide a solid addition to a distraught Michigan pass rush. With his speed off the line, and quick moves, Roh can easily evade the opposing offensive line.

Although Wolverine Nation can not wait to see Roh in action, we most likely will not see him in action this year. Roh needs to bulk up a bit, and will most likely take a red-shirt for his first year at Michigan, and will be ready to take the field at the Big House in 2010.

Roh right now, is Michigan's top recruit for 2009, and we hope to see him in the years to come. If in fact Michigan can land No. 2 DE Sam Montgomery, then Michigan's defensive pass rush, will be truly rebuilt in the next few years at Michigan.

Ravens Vs. Steelers: A Battle for the Ages

This weekend, we will see the two best defenses in the NFL take the field. They will be playing for the ultimate goal. A chance to play on the final Sunday of the season. The Superbowl. The finale. No room for error.

It fits, that these two teams are AFC North Rivals. These two teams are more than familiar with each other, facing off twice in the regular season. The Steelers won both game, but won both games by a total of seven points.

In their first matchup, Pittsburg won 23-20 off a late Jeff Reed field goal, and the second game was won by a late Ben Rothlisberger touchdown pass.

For their final matchup of the season, defense looms huge. The Steelers totaled 20 interceptions, and 51.0 sacks during the regular season, while the Ravens totaled 26 interceptions and 34.0 sacks.

The Ravens are led by linebacker Ray Lewis, and Safety Ed Reed, who has multiple interceptions this postseason.

The Steelers are led by linebackers James Farrior, James Harrison, and LaMar Woodley, who had a combined for 31.0 sacks this season.

On the other side of the ball, we have the Steelers, who's quarterback Ben Rothlisberger just keeps going and going and going, no matter how many times he gets plastered to the ground by oncoming pass rushers, and Ravens rookie QB just keeps showing that he can be the man in Baltimore for the years to come.

Both teams have amazing defense's and the team that forces the most turnovers, will win this game.

No Chris Wells or Michael Crabtree: Marvin Lewis Is Eyeing an OT or DT

I'm getting fed up with all these articles about Chris Wells or Michael Crabtree being the answer for the Bengals.

Chris Wells, or Michael Crabtree are not the answer for the Bengals. You could argue back with the fact that the Bengals Offense was the worst in the league this year. That's because Carson Palmer was injured the entire year.

Carson Palmer is the Bengals offense, and without him, we can't make plays. Ryan Fitzpatrick was not an amazing passer, and when you can't pass the ball, you can't run the ball.

With Palmer back next season, the running game will open up, and Cincinnati Running backs will be able to be more successful. Reason two why we don't need Wells, is because we are set at the running back position.

Cedric Benson was solid at times last season, and behind him, we have Chris Perry, Kenny Watson, and DeDe Dorsey.

What about wide receivers? We do not need to draft Michael Crabtree either. We are most likely loosing our two best wide receivers next year. So why not draft Crabtree? Because we are prepared. We drafted 2 capable wide receivers last year: Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson, along with Chris Henry, who can prove himself in his first "full" season in a while.

Who should the Bengals Draft? An OT, DT, or linebacker.

Here are some of the Bengals Possible First Rounders

1. Eugene Monroe, OT, UVA

2. Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss

3. Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech

4. Andre Smith, OT, Alabama

These are the Bengals main needs. Its a possibility that we could draft a WR or RB in the later rounds, but the Bengals main focus is going to be on the offensive line, and the defense.

Minor Man on Campus: Brandon going to have Major year in 2009

Brandon Minor is anything but Minor. He stands 6-feet-1 and weighs 214 pounds. In his three years at Michigan, he has been held to under 300 carries, due to the success of RB Mike Hart.

2008 would have been the year Minor shined, but instead of him starting, hyped up true freshman Sam McGuffie started at running back for most of the first half of the season.

McGuffie had one "good" game, against Notre Dame, and you could call his 105 yards against Toledo good if you want to. Toward the end of the season, Minor was given his chance at halfback.

His first impact game was against Penn State. I say impact because this was the first game were he carried the ball more than four times. Minor took advantage of the opportunity, rushing for 117 yards on 17 carries for two TDs.

This performance opened some eyes. For the rest of the season after his breakout game, he did not receive fewer than 14 carries a game.

His best performance was Michigan's close battle with Purdue. Minor ran the ball 25 times, for 155 yards, and three scores.

He did not have a game under 50 yards rushing for the remainder of the season, and stated a case for himself as starter in 2009.

Recently, Sam McGuffie transferred from Michigan, leaving the door wide open for Minor, who is almost a lock for the starting running back next season.

I think that with more playing time, Minor will become better, and with a chance to play on a regular basis in 2009, he can have a breakout season. A revamped O-line will create better running lanes, and Minor can use his athletic ability to take advantage.

Minor is going to have an amazing year, and fix the Wolverines' major problems with Minor solutions.

Tate Forcier: A Closer Look At Michigan's Future

As all Michigan fans are, I am very excited for what the 2009 season brings, including quarterback Tate Forcier. Forcier is projected to compete for the starting job with QB Steven Threet and is likely to win the job.

Forcier is 6'1” and 183 pounds. He is a good thrower and can definitely make plays outside of the pocket with his feet. He is dead accurate on pass attempts.

In 2007, he completed 164 out of 213 passes, or 77 percent for almost 2,400 yards. He got the ball into the end zone 21 times with his arm. He also got the job done on the ground, rushing for 733 yards on 66 attempts with 11 yards a carry. He also had six scores.

With Forcier's mobility and accuracy, he perfectly fits the spread offense. If he can get some receivers who can make plays, I see a long Michigan career for this kid. He might not be able to scramble as much as he did in high school, but he will be able to make plays when they break down, make time for himself and throw outside of the pocket.

At his size, he might have some trouble making plays sitting right in the pocket, but will have lots of time to make his throws. This will be primarily due to his feet and a Michigan offensive line that is bringing in multiple red-shirted players who can get make an impact.

With all the quarterback woes last year, I'm hoping that Forcier can be a solution, to what was an awful year for Michigan last year.

Gone With the Wind: Seven Former College Quarterbacks We May Never See Again

In college football, there are often many great quarterbacks that play. Many of these quarterbacks go on to have great NFL careers. But some of these great college quarterbacks barely get a chance in the NFL because of their size or skill set.

1. Jared Zabransky, Boise State (2002-2006)

Zabransky threw for 8,000-plus yards, and 57 TDs in his run as a Bronco, yet he is currently a free agent in the NFL and has been in Houston and Pittsburgh as a backup with hardly any chance to play.

2. Dennis Dixon, Oregon (2003-2007)

The Ducks' speedy and elusive QB threw for 5,000-plus yards and threw 38 TDs in his run as a Duck. He also provided great speed, compiling a good number of rushing yards as well. Dixon is currently sitting on the bench of the Steelers, and the NFL is not willing to give his style of play a chance.

3. Chris Leak, Florida (2003-2006)

Most notably known for leading the Gators to the 2007 BCS National championship game win against Ohio State, Leak found no opportunity to play in the NFL and is now playing in the CFL.

4. Troy Smith, Ohio State (2003-2006)

Smith, the former Heisman winner, threw for almost 6,000 yards and 54 TDs while taking his team to the national championship game in 2006. Smith had a chance to be the quarterback at Baltimore, but rookie Joe Flacco won the job preseason, subduing Smith to the bench.

5. Colt Brennan, Hawaii (2004-2007)

Brennan threw for 14,193 yards and 131—yes, you read that right, 131 touchdowns in a Hawaii uniform. Where is he now? Sitting on the bench of the Washington Redskins.

6. Brian Brohm, Louisville (2004-2007)

Brohm threw for almost 11,000 yards and 70 touchdowns. Brohm is currently the third backup in the Packers organization, sitting behind Matt Flynn and of course, Aaron Rodgers.

7. Andre Woodson, Kentucky (2004-2007)

In four years with the Wildcats, Woodson threw for 9,760 yards and 79 TDs. Where is he now? On the practice squad for the New York Giants.

So it just comes to show that it's not all numbers in the NFL. You have to be a typical NFL quarterback, and if you're not, you will see a life of being third on the depth chart, playing in Canada, or being on a practice squad.

The Only Way Is Up: the Five Steps Towards A Wolverine Incline in '09

1. Solving the Quarterback fiasco

Michigan had a wide array of quarterbacks this season. From opening the season with Nick Sheridan, and then using Steven Threet, and at one point, even taking off Justin Feagan's red shirt to backup in case of injury. You could not say that any of the three had decent success to Michigan's standards.

Luckily, we had landed dual-threat QB Shavodrick Beaver. He was going to be a perfect fit for Rich's spread-O. But Beaver later decomitted from Michigan and committed with Tulsa. Thankfully, we had another top commit, Tate Forcier, out of San Diego, who can fit into the spread offense and will likely compete for a starting job at QB.

Forcier has the ability to make plays when the pocket breaks down and has the speed to take the ball himself and gain the first down. He will likely share time at QB with Threet and eventually take over at the starting spot.

2. That old running back position

After all the talk about Sam McGuffie, and the famous hurdle, McGuffie is no longer a Wolverine. McGuffie transferred to Rice University, leaving doubt as to who can pull the load at running back.

Brandon Minor would seem to be the answer. Minor was limited to 13 carries for 86 yards over the first six games of the season. Minor broke out late season rushing for 117 yards at Penn State, and 155 yards and 3 TD's against Purdue.

If not Minor, then incoming RB Fitzgerald Toussaint can get in on the action, as the Nation's No. 28 overall prep running back.

3. The Defense

After having a subpar year at defense, the Wolverines need a solution. They are losing top DT Terrence Taylor to the draft. To fill this gap, we have Craig Roh out of Arizona, the No. 4 DE in the nation.

Roh has great speed off the snap and great pass rushing abilities. Roh will definitely help out a struggling Michigan defense, by applying constant pressure to the opposing QB.

Also, coming out of New Jersey Anthony LaLota, the No. 13 DE in the nation, can provide some more great pass rush and QB pressure.

4. The Offensive Line

Clearly since loosing Jake Long to the NFL, Michigan has missed his pass protect abilities. Michigan had trouble giving their QB's time to throw the ball therefore allowing their Quarterbacks to get sacked way to much.

Taylor Lewan, teammate of Craig Roh in Arizona, will provide the protection that Michigan is looking for. At 6'6", 270lbs, Lewan can block for the run, and the pass, while sticking with his assignments. He will use his athleticism to stay with the oncoming pass rush.

Another major addition to the Michigan O-line is William Campbell. Listed at 6'5", 317lbs, Campbell uses his size and wingspan to protect the QB from the oncoming pass rush.

5. Living up to the Michigan Football Tradition.

After the most embarrassing season in Michigan history, all the coaches, players, and staff will come out this season with a new sense of pride and passion. They will work hard to earn the right to take the field at the Big House on Saturday afternoons.

Tony Dungy: The End of an Era

Tony Dungy: 10 years, 10 playoff appearances, and one Super Bowl. An MVP Quarterback—twice—and the love of a nation.

Tony Dungy did it the right way.

He is the first coach to beat every one of the 32 NFL teams. He changed the football world by being the first African American coach to win a Super Bowl.

He started his NFL coaching career as an assistant coach for the Steelers in 1981. From popularizing the Tampa-Two defense, to rebuilding the Tampa franchise itself, to bringing the Colts to the top of the league, and reaching the pinnacle in 2007 against the Bears, Tony Dungy has made the football world a better place.

Dungy brought more than talent to the game of football. He brought character, pride, and the will to win.

Dungy believed that there was more to sports than meets the eye, and he proved it.

We will always miss Tony Dungy, and what he did for the game of football.

Birds Are Victorious: Ravens and Cardinals Fly Away

Saturday afternoon, and the Tennessee Titans go out to play some ball against the streaking Ravens. The Ravens pulled out a win, and a convincing one at that, winning 13-10, off a late Matt Stover 43-yard field goal.

The Baltimore defense collected three more turnovers, and proved to be one of the best defenses in the league. Who says they can't win the AFC championship game? With a decent QB in rookie Joe Flacco and of course their Pro Bowl defense, their are no limits to what they can do.

Later that night, the Cardinals took the field against Carolina, a week after winning their first home playoff game in over 50 years. Jake Delhome just had an awful day, throwing five interceptions to a run-of-the-mill, at best, defense in the Arizona Cardinals. The key factor in this game you ask? Star wide recievers of course; Arizona WR Larry Fitzgerald reeled in eight receptions for 166 yards and a score, while Carolina playmaker Steve Smith touched the ball twice for 43 yards.

If the Panthers wanted any chance at winning tonight, they would have had to give the ball to their star wide reciever. How can you make plays if your most dangerous player has two receptions for 41 yards? YOU CAN'T. If they had thrown to him more, you would think that Carolina would have at least put up more of a fight, but all is for not, because the Cardinals have advanced.

Chargers-Colts: Darren Sproles Is the Man

Darren Sproles is the man of the hour. With 328 all purpose yards, two touchdowns, one being a game-winning touchdown run in overtime, Sproles is perhaps the most dangerous player with the ball in his hands in the NFL

The Colts suffered an overtime loss to the San Diego Chargers, and the Chargers continue to write their amazing story. With four games to play in the regular season, the Chargers were 4-8 and with no chance at a winning season, and were counted out as far as the playoffs go.

The rallied off four straight wins and made the playoffs after beating the ailing Broncos on the last game of the season.

Sproles has been key all season for the Chargers and did not disappoint, as he took most of the workload in the backfield due to L.T.'s injured groin.

Ken Griffey, Jr. Seattle Bound?

Ken Griffey, Jr. Perhaps the best Major League Baseball player of the past 20 years. He was voted the player of the decade for the 90s. In addition to 598 career home runs and two 50 home run seasons, he has had many gold gloves. He is a for sure hall of famer.

In Seattle, he had both of his 50 home run seasons, and almost 400 of his nearly 600 home runs. He hit over .300 seven times while in Seattle and won all of his gold gloves there.

In 2000, a blockbuster trade was pulled off and the Cincinnati Reds acquired Mr. Griffey. In his first year as a Red, he delivered. He had 40 home runs and close to 120 RBI.

In years after, he started to get injured, torn up, and beat down. His best season since 2000 came in 2005 when he hit 35 home runs and batted .301.

Griffey is still a dangerous threat at the plate. But with a $16 million option for 2009, he is just not worth it. The Reds are stacked with outfielders and would be happy to replace him.

All of this came to the attention of the public, when a rumor started about a Seattle Mariners' scout who came to watch Griffey play and reportedly made an offer for Griffey.

I say Griffey is gone by the trading deadline. All I know is that he would want to end his career in Seattle.

It'll be tough to let him go as a Reds' fan, but they just can't afford him.

Is Horse Racing a Worthwhile Sport?

Horse Racing. It has been around for nearly 200 years. It's a tradition. The Preakness. The Belmont. The Kentucky Derby. Every single race has tradition built into it. For the people who enjoy it, it's an exciting afternoon to watch horses run for a couple hours.

But for the many of us who don't like it, we question it as a sport.

I mean, how is it a sport? It's not an athletic event. Maybe it's athletic for the horses, but do they know better?

These horses train hard and long their entire lives. And for what? To be patted on the back and trained a little more.

They don't know they're racing. They just know that they won't get whipped if they run fast. They don't even get any prize for winning.

People bet on horse races. Horse racing is no more than a casino outside of the casino. People put millions of dollars on the line for a simple animal race.

Plus, lots of horses are getting injured. In the case of Eight Belles, he lost his life because of horse racing. Barbaro died because of horse racing. Big Brown has also been injured.

Madden for McFadden: Is Darren #1?

JaMarcus Russel, Mario Willams, Alex Smith, and Eli Manning. All have one thing in common. What is that you may ask? Well its plain and simple.

Each and every one of those names were the first. The first name called. The first name called in each of their respective drafts. They were the first overall picks. The top dogs. The best of that year.

They are all great. Including Eli Manning, who recently took his underdog New York Giants to the Super Bowl. They won, and are currently the top team in the land.

This raises an important question. Who is #1 in 2008? Some say Glen Dorsey, some Say Darren McFadden, some say Chris Long, some say Jake Long, some say Vernan Gholston.

The Miami Dolphins are coming off one of the worst collective seasons in NFL history. They had a terrible Defense and offense. They also have the honor of selecting the first overall player in the upcoming draft.

Which way should they go? Defense or Offense?

If they go offense, they most likely will go with Arkansas running back Darren McFadden. McFadden would be a wise choice. This year he ran for 1830 yards on 325 carries with a 5.6 ypc. He also scored 16 touchdowns.

If you chose defense, go with Glen Dorsey. With explosive energy on and off the field, he would make a great addition to a very, very needy Dolphins team.

Dorsey or McFadden, take your pick.

I think that the Dolphins Should take Darren McFadden. He will be an amazing offensive player, and will help this Dolphins team alot.

Put Roger Clemens Aside: There's a Season to Play

As you must know, Roger Clemens has been having a back and fourth with Brian McNamee.

Mr. McNamee claims to have injected Clemens with HGH and Steroids in the early 2000s.

They have both gone through deposition, and both went to a congressional hearing together. Roger seems to be on the losing side of this. Andy Pettitte has also stirred up some news. He says that Clemens told him that he used performance enhancing drugs. Clemens denies these claims and says it was a misunderstanding.

We need to put this aside. Spring training starts in a couple of weeks. As Lou Pinella stated, we are pretty close to the next major league season, yet we are still talking about events that possibly happened five or six years ago.

Let Roger Clemens go for a while. Let that work itself out. While that happens, we can focus on who is going to contend for the World Series next year. The Mets acquired Santana, the Mariners got Erik Bedard, and it's all being overshadowed.

Can the Mets pull it off this season? Will the Red Sox prove a Dynasty? Will the Rockies play Cinderella once again?

I hop we can start talking about these topics soon, because at this point, we are not anywhere close.

Spreading Butter: The Spread Offense at a Glance

The spread option offense—also known as the spread, the spread-o and the five-wide spread—mesmerized college football this season.

The spread offense is a high speed offense in which four or five wide receivers are spread across the field. The quarterback sits in the shotgun formation with a single splitback on their left or right side.

In this system, the quarterback is usually a very fast and elusive player.

The objective of the spread offense is to spread out the defense across the field to create mismatches and one-on-one coverage. With the defense spread out, there is lots of room on either side of the front line, creating running lanes for the elusive QB who will often run options and sneaks.

Several of the Top 25 teams in the nation used the spread offense, including Oregon, West Virgina, Missouri, LSU, Florida, and many others—proving it a force to be reckoned with.

In my opinion, the finest example of the spread offense was displayed this season by Dennis Dixon, Jonathan Stewart, and the Oregon Ducks. Until Dixon was injured late in the season, the Ducks were the top team in the nation. They were unstoppable.

The spread offense is also fun to watch. When I'm watching a game featuring a spread offense, I know who's going to win—the team that's running the spread. There is no specific way to defend against this offense, which raises the question: Should this offense be banned?

Why should the NCAA allow teams to use a strategy that is impossible to stop?

It would be unfair. If their is no way to defend it than it shouldn't be legal to use because the few teams that have players capable of the spread would have an unfair advantage over the league.

You could counter with the fact that any team could run it. YOU WOULD BE WRONG. You are wrong. You need a fast quarterback, and elusive running back, and an amazing offensive line.

So until the NCAA puts this into consideration, these fast paced teams will continue spreading defenses like knives spread butter.

NCAA Recruiting: The Kevin Hart Saga

"I wanted to play D-I ball more than anything. When I realized that wasn't going to happen, I made up what I wanted to be reality," said Kevin Hart in a statement.

In a small Nevada city, at Fernley High School, one of the saddest stories to hit the sports scene in a while has come to surface. A senior football player at Fernley high school recently went through a very weird experience.

He faked his recruitment. Made it all up.

He told local reporters that he was being recruited by several big-time D-I schools. Specifically, Cal and Oregon. He was to be the first player ever from that high school to play at a division one school.

He held a selection event at his high school in which he put out two hats: an Oregon hat and a Cal hat. He picked up the Cal hat and stood for photographs and applause.

When a person involved with recruiting at the University of California at Berkeley was contacted, he said he had never heard of Hart, let alone recruited him.

This all turned out to be a lie. He admitted later that week that it was all a hoax and that he had made it up because the dream of going to play football was not going to come true.

So, he faked it.

The NFL: A Kick and a Prayer

You all know who number four is in the picture to the left—don't you?

If you are among the few that do not, that is Adam Vinatieri. He kicked the game-winning field goal against the Philadelphia Eagles during Super Bowl 39 in 2004 in Jacksonville at Alltell Stadium.

Adam Vinatieri is known as the best kicker of the modern era. But how did he get where he is?

It was not easy, let me tell you that.

After he attended South Dakota State University, it seemed like his NFL dream would never come true. He tried out for the World League of American football, the predecessor of NFL Europa and was given a spot of the roster of the Amsterdam Admirals.

Then in 1996, he was given the chance of a lifetime.

He was signed undrafted by the patriots. He played ten years with the Patriots and appeared in four Super Bowls—winning two of them himself.

This brings up a thought.

How do kickers pursue such impossible careers? Most kickers are not given college scholarships and most are undrafted. For the many that have this dream, there are only 30 job spots. All of them are already filled.

This means an impossible amount of work from these want to be kickers. Most just happen to be noticed, and some have lots of natural talent. they can rise to the moment whenever they kick, maybe even sculpting their future.

Let's take Lawernce Tynes of the New York Giants. He is not among the top kickers in his league, or the NFL.

You're watching the Packers vs. the Giants at Lambeau and watch him miss his first field goal. The second one that sends the game into overtime makes you angry because he just gave the Packers another chance. But when he finally makes the game-winning kick in overtime, he makes up for everything because he sent his team to the Super Bowl.

Although the position can be make or break, any kicker can rise to the occasion.

Who will be next?
