Mavericks' Guards Battle for Minutes

You want players to compete with one another in order to improve. Competition provides a challenge, a challenge proving worth and value. NBA teams witness this very spectacle in training camps, practices, and even games.

The Dallas Mavericks might have a competition of their own brewing at the moment. It’s not hot news in the way the Golden State Warriors make headlines recently, but Dallas’ young guards Jose Juan Barea and Rodrigue Beaubois seem to be on the teeter-totter when it comes to Mavericks fans .

Barea and Beaubois show zero signs of proving one is better than the other, but surely both want to see the floor as much as possible. Barea, a four-year veteran, eased his way in gaining the coaching staff’s confidence to handle steady minutes, including closing out games.

Rookie Beaubois already starts at shooting guard in place of the injured Josh Howard .

But thus far into the early season, Barea receives more minutes off the bench than Beaubois does starting. Here’s a breakdown of the minutes in the five games when Beaubois starts:

Nov. 4 at New Orleans – Beaubois (13:31) | Barea (28:27 )

Nov. 13 at Minnesota – Beaubois (15:19) | Barea (19:59 )

Nov. 15 at Detroit – Beaubois (19:08) | Barea (21:21 )

Nov. 16 at Milwaukee – Beaubois (24:05) | Barea (26:46 )

Nov. 18 vs. San Antonio – Beaubois (16:34) | Barea (30:58 )

With the exception of the game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday, a trend is obvious: The time gap shrinks between the two guards as the season progresses.

Rick Carlisle knows the rookie will make mistakes and miss defensive assignments from time to time. Carlisle also understands the young player possesses smooth, athletic talent and needs minutes to learn on the fly. The same process took place with Barea over the past few seasons and he’s shown tremendous improvement.

The Mavericks’ roster contains four to six guards, all capable of playing 30 solid minutes per night. Jason Kidd , Jason Terry , and Howard (when healthy) consume the bulk of the minutes. However, it’s impossible to satisfy everyone, which remains one reason Barea and Beaubois compete for playing time.

Both bring different elements to the game.

Beaubois fills the shoes of Howard by launching the team off to quick starts with his lightning speed, scoring ability, and length on defense.

Barea enters and orchestrates the offense when Kidd rests, and looks for his shot when playing in the three-guard lineup Carlisle favors during games.

Beaubois shows glimpses of excellence and he’s impressing fans and his teammates. “He has really impressed me so far. He is very quick off the dribble and he has a nice little touch in the paint. He can finish, he is athletic. He looks really, really good to me,” said Dirk Nowitzki .

Barea is no stranger to praise either. He received lots of it when his constant hard work translated to the court.

For now, Dallas has itself a positive dilemma. Having two young players who possess the ability to play either guard position provides the Mavericks with depth and confidence. Barea and Beaubois go hard at one another in practice and even harder against opponents on game nights. If they both continue to improve by fighting for those minutes, I say let the battle continue.

Know Your Role: Mavericks' Offseason Acquisitions Paying Dividends

Over the summer and throughout training camp, the Dallas Mavericks stressed the importance of roster depth. So far in this young season, there has been a lot of pressure on the shoulders of German star Dirk Nowitzki and Sixth Man of the Year Jason Terry. With teams focused on stopping the Mavericks’ two-man game, the weaknesses of the Dallas Mavericks have been exposed.

Jason Kidd has pushed the tempo, called the plays, and distributed the ball, but a lack of offensive weapons has taken a toll on one of the NBA’s greatest quarterbacks.

Luckily, Dallas spent the offseason adding pieces to the core of Nowitzki, Kidd, and Terry. The shopping spree brought in veterans Shawn Marion, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross, Tim Thomas, Kris Humphries, and rookie Rodrigue Beaubois.

Josh Howard continues rigorously to rehab his surgically repaired ankle after his return to the team lasted just three games before he was back on the sidelines.

Recently, center Erick Dampier became ill over the road trip in Detroit and has missed the last two contests.

Last year, Dallas did not have the supporting cast to pick up the slack when injuries kept core players out. However, one year later, the Mavericks turned the tables. Beaubois is starting for Howard, while Gooden handles the duties of center in Dampier’s absence. So far, the results have been very gratifying.

In four starts this season, Beaubois has been a quick, point-scoring starter, averaging 11 points and shooting 64 percent from the field, including 56 percent behind the arc.

Gooden brushed aside a slow, lackluster beginning to the season to make two consecutive starts for Erick Dampier. His hustle and hard work is apparent in the box score. He’s averaging 16.5 points and 12.5 rebounds over his last two starts.

“He’s had two monster games for us,” head coach Rick Carlisle said.

Monster games they were. The Mavericks are sure glad they signed a player of Gooden's caliber in the offseason.

Dallas faces San Antonio Wednesday night at home, the first of a three-game home stand. Marion is questionable after tweaking his left ankle on the first play against Milwaukee last night. However, another role player gets an opportunity to step up, as Tim Thomas is expected to make his season debut.

Injuries are something no team wants to deal with, but at least the Dallas Mavericks have the role players to come in and weather the storm.

Dallas Mavericks Move On Without Josh Howard

Dallas Mavericks fans anticipated what the addition of Shawn Marion would look like in the starting lineup. More importantly, they wanted to see how Marion and Josh Howard played next to one another with Jason Kidd running the show.

Preseason basketball came and went without the two touching the court together. Five games into the regular season, Marion was in uniform and Howard in street clothes.

Finally, less than 24 hours from a home game against the Toronto Raptors, the news broke that Howard would make his much-awaited season debut from offseason ankle surgery.

The team looked revived, hustling and running on its way to a dominating victory over the Raptors, 129-101. Howard helped the Mavericks to another win against the visiting Houston Rockets. However, in just his third game back, Howard left the floor in San Antonio after 19 minutes due to an obvious limp. He did not return.

Howard has since been labeled as "out indefinitely," which has become common in Dallas. The Mavericks must move on without their arguably second-best scoring option.

Where do they look to fill the role Howard's absence presents?

Dallas has several players to pick up the slack, and that's exactly what they will have to do. Reigning Sixth Man of the Year Jason Terry, Jose Barea, Quinton Ross, and possibly rookie Roddy Beaubois will get time at the two guard spot.

Terry plays second fiddle to Dirk Nowitzki more often than not. The JET found his shooting touch recently and it couldn't have come at a better time. Terry's defense improved from last season and he's hitting the gaps with more efficiency.

Barea gives Jason Kidd rest as the backup point guard, but also plays alongside Kidd and Terry at times. His increased confidence only benefits the team. Barea excels when offensively aggressive and even more dangerous when he's finding open teammates.

Ross joined the club over the summer to be a defensive ace. He and Marion keep the team accountable on that end of the floor. Ross' defensive awareness makes opposing shooting guards work hard for every shot. If he can continue to hit jumpers on the weak side, his value simply improves.

At last, Rodrigue Beaubois. The rookie point guard possesses immense amounts of talent combined with his dynamic athletic ability. When given minutes, mistakes happen, but the upside has looked brilliant. Beaubois darts up and down the court with amazing speed and owns a 40" vertical leap. His 6'10" wingspan makes him a viable defensive threat and steal machine. Once RB3 receives consistent minutes in this league, he will produce.

So as the Mavericks move along with Josh Howard, his teammates seek to deliver in his absence.

Caroline Wozniacki: Tennis' Rising Star

Most people are familiar with Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova. It's time for a new name.

Caroline Wozniacki [pronounced Woz-NEE-ak-ee].

Born in Odense, Denmark, she currently resides in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The 2009 U.S. Open most recently showcased the strides 19-year-old Wozniacki has taken. The young Dane advanced to the final against veteran Kim Clijsters. Although she fell short and earned second place, it was the beginning steps of a march into the national spotlight.

In the quarterfinals match of the U.S. Open she faced 17-year-old Melanie Oudin from Marietta, Georgia. Wozniacki showed exceptional poise and confidence by defeating the American despite a heavily Oudin-favored crowd.

"I'm sorry I won against Melanie today," Wozniacki said to the crowd afterward. "I know many of you guys wanted her to win, but hopefully I won many of your guys' hearts, and you'll be cheering for me in my next match." - New York Times

Her statements above show the character she beholds. Wozniacki understood her surroundings and made a professional address to the crowd after her win versus Oudin.

Tennis became her love early in life. Not long after, she was competing and winning most matches against her family. Her calling had been found.

Intense training and work ethic would lead to several victories. When she was 14, Wozniacki won the Osaka Mayor's Cup in Japan.

Wozniacki would not take long to turn pro, joining the Sony Ericsson WTA in 2005. Denmark's new tennis icon was inching her way up the ladder, winning multiple junior tournament titles. Most notably, Wozniacki was victorious at Wimbledon in the 2006 Junior Championships.

As a result of her stellar play at this year's U.S. Open, Wozniacki received an invite to the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Qatar. This season-ending tournament features solely the world's top eight players. The competition will start Oct. 27 and conclude Nov. 1.

Currently ranked sixth by the WTA, her somewhat unknown status will change. Her chances to win the WTA Championships are par with anyone.

Wozniacki is on the verge of stardom. She feels it.

"I always believed that I could be one of the best players in the world, I just didn't think that it would happen so soon."

Sources:

The New York Times

Caroline's Official Website

Determining MLB's Cy Young Winners

Every season in the MLB, a pitching award is given to the best pitcher from each league. This honor comes in the form of the Cy Young Award, named after the all-time leader in wins.

Members of the Baseball Writers Association of America will analyze a group of pitchers who have performed at the highest level most of the year. One pitcher from the National and American Leagues win the award.

In 2008, the awards were taken home by Tim Lincecum of San Francisco Giants and Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians.

I was thrilled to see Lincecum come away with the prize and it was well deserved. He out-dueled 22-game winner Brandon Webb, brief N.L. starter C.C. Sabathia (then with Milwaukee), and Brad Lidge who was perfect in 40 save opportunities.

Lee was a surprise 22-game winner himself in the A.L. He bounced back tremendously from a year that saw him spend most of 2007 in the minors. His claim of the 2008 Cy Young was more of a runaway than Lincecum’s.

Lincecum’s win total was five less than Webb’s at 18, but he only lost five times. Timmy led the league in strikeouts and posted a better ERA than the other candidates.

So what exactly determines why one pitcher deserves it over another?

Here are five points to look at when deciding the Cy Young winner for either league:

1. Losses

Wins aside, check the number of losses a pitcher totals to see where they really stand. A pitcher who wins 15 games and loses 12 isn’t as impressive as one who finishes 13-5. It goes to show that the pitcher with less losses factored in more no decisions rather than straight losing a game.

2. ERA

A pitcher’s ERA or earned run average is one of the most important statistics in pitching. It informs you how many runs scored on average against a pitcher are earned. A.L. pitchers’ ERA will usually be higher than N.L. due to the designated hitter rather than hitting pitchers. Keep an eye on any starting pitcher with an ERA under three.

3. WHIP

Walk + Hits/Innings Pitched. That’s the equation. This is a stat that should never be overlooked. It exemplifies how talented and controlled a pitcher is. A pitcher whose WHIP hovers around one displays excellent command and low BAA (batting average against).

4. Team Impact

How does the player impact the team? What’s the team’s record? Does the player get teammates fired up? Do batters seem to have an extra step when their pitcher takes the mound? How much does the team’s rank in the standings matter? These are the intangibles. I personally am more impressed by a pitcher who posts a 18-5 record on a losing team than on a winner. Run support is almost essential in winning for pitchers unless they’re expected to throw near flawless games each time out.

5. Stand Out Stat or Story

Find or see something about the player that shoots his status pass the rest. Last season Lincecum led the league with 265 strikeouts in just his second full season. People generally fell in love with the young 24-year-old stud at the time.

As we mentioned for Lee, he was pretty much the comeback player of the year. His story of majors to minors and back to the majors to elite status was news. Not many pitchers win 20 games in a season; Lee had 22 wins and did it in dominating fashion.

Kevin "Dallas" Martin: A Perfect Fit For The Mavericks

Dallas is his middle name. That's already catchy.

Kevin Martin is a player who made himself into a star out of Eastern Carolina.

I remember the first game I ever saw Martin play. Held in China, the Sacramento Kings were up against hometown legend Yao Ming and his Houston Rockets.

When Martin was announced as a starter, I had no idea who he was. I thought he was just another guy who would be cut before the real season began.

I was wrong.

The Kings' star shooting guard has come a ways since then, and has evolved into one of the league's best offensive threats.

The Dallas Mavericks currently have nine straight 50-plus-win seasons—and just one Finals appearance to show for it. Mark Cuban, Donnie Nelson, and Dirk Nowitzki are not satisfied.

The Mavericks' consistent winning is due to the elite star Nowitzki himself, but the zero rings is a result of missing links.

Center has always been a weak position in Dallas. So has shooting guard, ever since the departure of Michael Finley.

Those two positions are what keep the Mavericks from making it back to the Finals and winning it all.

Kevin Martin enters the picture.

With Josh Howard missing several stints due to injury, Dallas was dependent on just two scorers, Nowitzki and Sixth Man of the Year Jason Terry. This two-man game was predictable and hurt the Mavericks down the stretch in close games.

Shawn Marion has since been added to the equation, but he didn't address the shooting guard vacancy currently to be held by the oft-injured Howard. Marion will bring multiple skill sets to a team which lacked such athleticism, defensive prowl, and finishing ability at the rim.

Martin, 26, is in the early stages of his prime. His offensive game is very complete with an arsenal of weapons. He possesses a deadly knack for driving the ball to the rim, while having a superb shooting touch despite an awkward release.

These are the qualities Cuban's squad needs for the two guard hole. His ability to put the ball in the basket on his own will simply make life easier for Nowitzki and Terry.

And did I mention he is only 26? I did, but it needed to be reiterated.

Now, how does Dallas convince Sacramento to trade away its best player? Money is a huge factor in the Kings' thought process, but they also must consider what losing their most talented player will do for a struggling franchise.

Dallas needs to bargain with the Kings in order to make this work. Pass the idea that Kevin Martin shouldn't spend most his prime years on a team in the beginning stages of rebuilding. Tyreke Evans, the fourth pick in this summer's draft, is suited to be an off guard opposed to the point.

Doesn't that put him and Martin in limbo?

Will the Kings be looking for player value in return, financial relief, or both? The Mavericks could likely service both. Howard has an expiring contract and is a sure All-Star player when healthy. Dallas probably would even be willing to accept Beno Udrih's bulky contract as part of the deal.

The formation of such a swap could look something like this:

Dallas trades Josh Howard, J.J. Barea, and Shawne Williams

Sacramento trades Kevin Martin, Beno Udrih

Sacramento would receive Howard as the temporary replacement for Martin and Barea will fill in Udrih's void. Sergio Rodriguez and Barea would likely share time at point. Williams is added for salary matching and is an expiring deal.

Dallas takes on major deals in Martin and especially Udrih, but successfully solidifies a position which sorely needed such. Udrih provides a decent point guard off the bench behind Jason Kidd.

With this trade alone, the Kings are helped financially along with some talent, Martin is grateful to play for a contender, and Dallas is ecstatic to finally land a shooting guard, which perfectly fulfills so many necessities.

There is another proposition which could be added in this deal to sweeten it for both ends potentially, but we'll touch on that later.

P.S. It has to do with the "DUST" Chip.

Mavs Potential Trade Partners

The Lakers have won the 2009 NBA championship. Congrats.

The official end to the season has begun. Let the offseason begin.

The Dallas Mavericks are a team hot for trades and moves to restructure the roster for improvement next year.

I want to take a look right now at three potential trade partners who have been mentioned with the Mavericks.

1. Washington Wizards

The Wizards and Mavericks already have a trade history dating back to 2004. That year the two teams swapped the rights of Devin Harris and Jerry Stackhouse for Antawn Jamison.

The rumors swirling around say Dallas is willing to trade up to the No. 5 pick that Washington holds. The Mavs have an eye for Arizona's Jordan Hill apparently.

Reports also mentioned the idea Dallas was willing to include either Josh Howard or Jason Terry to improve a deal.

2. Charlotte Bobcats

There is talk of the Bobcats financial struggles and a possible search for contract unloading.

The name Emeka Okafor immediately hit the surface due to his five years remaining worth over $62 million.

Dallas and Charlotte have a very recent trade history. The Mavericks could offer the Cats the financial relief they urgently need with expiring contracts in Erick Dampier and perhaps Jerry Stackhouse.

Okafor would certainly sure the five spot for the Mavericks, who have lacked a prominent center for a extended period of time.

The question is will the Bobcats decide that's the best option for the franchise.

3. Golden State Warriors

Pure conjecture has mention the Warriors and Mavericks in an idea that involves both teams' draft selections in the first round.

The basis is the Mavericks would hope Jordan Hill falls to the Warriors at seven. Dallas would then wait and see whether or not Terrence Williams lands with them at 22.

The swap would include swingman Corey Maggette and his unfavorable contract. Dallas would give up their 22nd pick only while receiving the services of solid veteran Maggette and young power forward prospect Hill.

All are plausible ideas and thoughts. Draft day is coming up here, not too long. Trades are bound to happen and it's about time.

Mavericks Done Against Surging Nuggets

Denver is advancing to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1985.

The Mavericks are returning to Dallas, not for a Game 6, but instead to clean out their lockers and begin another offseason.

The Nuggets owned this series despite a pair of close matches at American Airlines Center in Texas.

In Games 1 and 2, Dallas managed to hang around for three quarters before succumbing to the turnover bug and seeing Denver capitalize.

Game 3 was one many fans will remember as one the league screwed up. However, even without a foul being called, Carmelo Anthony had to hit the shot. He did. Denver won the close game, a gut-wrenching loss for the home Mavericks.

Game 4 served up another battle, with tempers flaring and strong emotions following the previous contest. Dirk willed his team to a victory with 44 points and 13 rebounds.

Game 5 was a tease to Mavericks fans in a way. The Mavs had a promising start smashed once Josh Howard squandered an opportunity to give the team a nine point lead, but missed all three foul shot attempts. On the third miss, Denver collected the rebound and found Chauncey Billups for a transition three. Six point turnaround.

The Mavericks fell behind multiple times. Timeout. Dallas makes short run, but immediately answered by either Billups, Anthony, or super sub J.R. Smith knocking down spectacular shots.

It wasn't a shock to see Dallas fall in the game, but knowing they blew opportunities is what makes the loss frustrating.

Dirk Nowitzki, freshly named to the All-NBA First Team, did everything and more for his Mavericks team. Congratulations Dirk.

Brandon Bass and J.J. Barea deserve a hand and tip of the hat for competing full throttle every time they touched the court.

Beyond those three it's hard to really give accolades. Jason Kidd struggled with the double team too often, causing non-Kidd like turnover numbers. Howard and two bad ankles, enough said. Jason Terry really never played like the sixth man of the year and it was costly.

Dirk was the only sure threat offensively throughout the series for Denver. The Nuggets had the obvious edge with consistent mob threat of Anthony, Billups, Smith, and Nene.

The Dallas Mavericks were simply outmatched.

Denver is sizzling, but it's summer in Dallas.

Jamal Mashburn: Clueless

The Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs tip off their first round series tonight.

Jamal Mashburn sat down to preview the matchup and offer his analysis.

It was first brought to my attention by its mention in an article on DallasBasketball.com.

Mike Fisher and his site are bomb. Visit to watch the video.

Throughout this slightly over two-minute video preview, Mashburn makes several comments and remarks which show he is clueless when it comes to the Dallas Mavericks, a team he played for—a very long time ago.

1. Can Dallas Take the Spurs, Who Have Won Eight Straight First Round Series, This Year?

JM: Nah...I don't think so. Dallas has been a very inconsistent team this year.

Okay, I agree the Mavericks have played inconsistently for most of the season. However this year, meaning the season, is over. Dallas ended it consistently and played extremely well. Meanwhile, the Spurs discovered they lost Manu Ginobili for the entire playoffs.

2. Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Roger Mason, and Michael Finley="Jump-Shooting Dallas Team"

I do not understand. Parker drives often and scores at will on the fastbreak, true. Duncan has his very efficient low-post game, but even he shoots jumpers—the "Duncan Bank," which is encouraged without offering checking or savings accounts.

The other two mentioned Spurs, Mason and Finley, are strictly jump shooters. Even other players such as Matt Bonner, Bruce Bowen, and Kurt Thomas.

I'm more comfortable with Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, and Jason Kidd taking jumpers.

A side-note: Spurs were dead last in FT attempts this season. (20.0)

3. Does Jason Kidd Elevate the Mavericks with His Sense of Urgency?

JM: Well, well the thing is with Jason Kidd is Jason Kidd has to guard another quick point guard in Tony Parker and that's a tough matchup for him. And who else are you gonna have out there? J.J. Barea (which he pronounced incorrectly) to guard Tony Parker?

Do Parker's speed and quickness cause a bad cover for Kidd? Yes. The thing is, Kidd will not start out covering Parker. Barea won't be asked to take that duty either, Jamal.

Antoine Wright, Dallas' starting shooting guard who has recently taken the defensive assignments of Chris Paul and Deron Williams, will have Parker in this series.

Another side-note: Mash mentions Parker's experience will dominate the point guard matchup. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard this player Jason Kidd has some experience himself.

4. Dallas Doesn't Have That "One Guy"

JM: Dallas doesn't have that one guy I would say you could just drop it into. Dirk Nowitzki is basically a 7'0", three-point shooter.

Wow, Jamal. Wow. This type of comment is something that, maybe, would make more reasonable sense in Dirk's early days with Don Nelson playing Nellie ball.

Dirk is far more than "basically a 7'0" three-point shooter" and has been for years now.

Nowitzki was 15th in the league in free-throw attempts per game. He shot at 89 percent.

Eighth in total attempts.

Fourth in scoring, 25.9 points per game.

Dirk's trey tries (2.1) are his lowest since his rookie year.

5. A League Poll: Who Is Dallas' Best Player?

JM: If you poll everybody around the league, and you ask who's the best player on the Dallas Mavericks team, I think everybody would be surprised that people would say Jason Terry because he is a player in the fourth quarter that really steps up.

And he's your sixth man. Can you advance past the Spurs with your sixth man being your best player? I don't think so.

To start with this one, I have to say they do poll everyone around the league, Mr. Mashburn. It's called the All-Star Game.

Who was there representing the Mavericks? Dirk, not Terry.

I'm quite sure almost everybody, besides yourself, is already surprised by how convinced you are Terry is the Dallas' best player, not Nowitzki.

I won't take anything away from JET and his fourth quarter performance level, but I will defend Dirk's presence which somehow JM doesn't acknowledge.

Mavs go to a two-man game towards the end of games: Nowitzki and Terry. Both players hit big shots and make big plays.

Mashburn obviously knows how good Terry is. Props on that tidbit. It's time he recognized Dallas' big German isn't too bad himself.

And a few last words (on whether or not he thinks the Mavs can win):

I Don't Think So

The assumption is Mash isn't the biggest Mavericks fan, but he doesn't need to be.

Dallas Mavericks—and I'm confident I speak for most if not all—would prefer he brush up on his facts and understanding of the team before making these bold statements.

The Dallas Mavericks' X-Factor: The Bench

This Dallas Mavericks team has been on a roller coaster ride most of the year.

When experiencing several ups and downs, one seeks for something or someone to keep them up.

Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd are the stars and leaders.

A stoop below them is Josh Howard and Jason Terry. Are either one the X-Factor?

Not quite.

It is reasonable to designate a specific player key to your team's success, but one player shouldn't be considered your X-Factor.

For the Mavericks, the bench takes on this role.

Dallas has the usual starting group of Kidd, Antoine Wright, Howard, Nowitzki, and Erick Dampier.

Only two possess a real scoring threat to opposing defenses, Dirk and Josh. Wright's night depends on whether his defense is effective and hits the open shot. Kidd is responsible for running the show, a task he usually does exceptionally well. Anything positive from Dampier is gravy.

What happens if the starters aren't clicking?

This is where the bench factors in.

Jason Terry

The Mavericks' second-leading scorer and the league's top reserve. Instant offense. His value to the team is beyond words. Terry is a crowd favorite. His work goes beyond the basketball court.

Jose Barea

Has progressed tremendously this year with steady playing time. With his confidence sky high, he now orchestrates the second unit soundly.

Brandon Bass

Strong case for being Nowitzki's most reliable backup in his career. Bass is a man. Strength and determination drive the 6'9" power forward to make the most of his opportunities. Not many two-hand slam the way Bass does.

James Singleton

Provides activity on the glass and an ability to knock down jumpers. One of several players who can get up and finish at the rim.

Ryan Hollins

Young and developing. His court action has been sporadic. When Hollins receives quality minutes, he has shown some bright spots. Finishes with authority. Protects the rim.

Gerald Green

Work in progress. Green happens to be another victim of insufficient minutes, but it has been for the benefit of his development. Green is Dallas' most athletic player and in time will gain a larger role. We all know Green can dunk, but he's out to prove there's more to his game.

Matt Carroll

Needs some love. He only hit his first tre in the Wednesday night romp of the Utah Jazz. The former Irish sharpshooter hasn't found a groove in Dallas thus far. Carroll will find his way. The Mavericks can always use a player who can spread the floor.

There they are, folks, the Dallas Mavericks reserves.

Provide relief for the starters. Provide a spark and energy. Provide the difference.

When these subs come in and do their part, the Mavericks are a difficult team to beat.

They are the X-Factor.

They are the Bench.

Syracuse Stud Eric Devendorf Should Stay For Senior Season

Eric Devendorf would have no other choice if he didn't tear his ACL a year ago.

The injury granted the Syracuse Orange guard an extra season of eligibility. The question now is whether he will take advantage.

Devendorf made a name for himself this season as the second leading scorer with 15.7 points per and finishing tops in three-point percentage at 39 percent. A strong Big East Tournament only bolstered his case.

After a disappointing performance against Oklahoma in the Sweet 16, Devendorf and the Orange were sent home. Syracuse shot poorly early and never recovered.

Just one of Syracuse's core players are seniors, energy man Kristof Ongenaet. Star point guard Jonny Flynn made noise earlier by stating he was heavily leaning to returning to the Orange for his junior campaign.

Reports have mentioned the likelihood of Devendorf and fellow junior Paul Harris declaring for the 2009 NBA Draft.

If one or both do and remain, it's a mistake. Why?

Ask ex-Syracuse Orange forward Donte Greene. He left after his freshman season, yes, but the point is he was not ready. If honest, Greene would tell anyone the same.

The several moments of excellence put aside, Devendorf is known for mental lapses that lead to mistakes, which hurt the team. His final year at Syracuse could help polish his game and eliminate those costly mental errors.

Harris' situation is even more complex than Devendorf. Harris would be labeled a "tweener" is NBA camps.

He's not a ball handler. He does not own a pure jumper. He is not a lock-down defender. He does not possess the height to play the low post.

Heavy with negativity, but it's the truth. Harris simply does not fit any position.

Both Devendorf and Harris have more back at Syracuse than either have to look forward to in the NBA right now. Sure the salary in the Association is alluring, but remember only first round picks receive guaranteed money.

The Orange are poised for another championship run next season. They keep the core group of Flynn, Andy Rautins, Arinze Onuaku, Rick Jackson, and freshman Kris Joseph. The return of Devendorf and Harris would strengthen their case.

It comes down to what is most important to each individual. They each have agendas and it can have Syracuse or the draft written on them.

A Syracuse return for both seems juicier than an early jump into a cloudy future the NBA beholds.

Shaq To Dallas? If So, Iverson Should Follow

Shaquille O'Neal and Mark Cuban.

Everyone might be hearing those two names together more often in the near future. The both have been friendly for years now, dating back to when O'Neal and younger Kobe Bryant had a falling out in Los Angeles.

Shaq made it known his preference in 2004 was to be traded to Dallas, but ended up in Miami. Turned out just fine when Miami were the victors over the Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Finals.

Presently in Phoenix, he could very likely be playing his last few games in a Suns uniform.

He will not lead them to a title.

The gossip among mutual friends of the Big Diesel and Cuban, Internet blogs, newspapers, and Twitter shows signs O'Neal has significant interest in playing for the Mavericks next season. Though nothing is set in stone or concrete evidence, this rumble didn't form out of thin air.

What will it take to get Shaq to Dallas?

At the moment, Erick Dampier and Jerry Stackhouse have been mentioned as the pieces heading to Phoenix in the possible exchange. Anyone more core-related, say Josh Howard, and the Mavericks need not pull the trigger.

If O'Neal ends up in Dallas, do the Mavericks stop there?

No. With Shaq in the middle Dallas fills a major need, but does not complete the team. To compete for an NBA championship once again, the Mavericks must also address the hole they have at shooting guard.

What is the solution?

Allen Iverson—The Answer.

The little warrior had a rough season after a trade sent him from Denver to Detroit.

Iverson is an unrestricted free agent in the summer and Dallas needs to make him an offer. The Mavericks would present an ample opportunity for the disgruntled guard.

Iverson wants to start. Check. He wants to win a title. Check. Dallas needs a tough player, a scoring shooting guard, and someone who can take over a game. Check.

Of course, this scenario revolves around whether Shaq winds up in Dallas this offseason. With O'Neal the Mavericks have an increased shot of prying the A.I. fish from the free agent pool.

Dallas Mavericks' Potential 2009-2010 Roster:

PG - Jason Kidd/J.J. Barea

SG - Allen Iverson/Jason Terry/Gerald Green

SF - Josh Howard/Antoine Wright/James Singleton

PF - Dirk Nowitzki/Brandon Bass

C - Shaquille O'Neal/Ryan Hollins

This team would play for nothing short of an NBA championship, and believe it, they are hungry enough to get it!

Fantasy Second Basemen: My Top Five

Fantasy Baseball 2009 has started.

I want to talk about the second baseman—a position that is overlooked, in my opinion.

2B is a position with limited quality and production. You will need to draft a solid 2B player early or you will not get strong value.

Do you draft a 2B first round? Not necessarily, but definitely try in the second or third depending on remaining value left on the board.

Let's get right into who my top five picks at second base would be.

1. Ian Kinsler

Kinsler is a young stud. The only thing to slow him down last year was a late season injury. Production is not a question with Kinsler. He provides .300+ batting average, decent home runs for a leadoff man, steals very well, and scores runs with the best.

Despite playing for a poor team record-wise in Texas, the Rangers offense ranked No. 1 in runs scored in 2008. Kinsler is a smart choice as the first second baseman selection.

2. Chase Utley

Utley was a tough guy to place at No. 2, because he could easily be interchangeable with Kinsler. One reason I slipped Utley here was I think Kinsler is set for an huge year and Utley will stick with his tailored numbers. And they are solid.

Utley finished last season a bit under .300, but will most likely return to the mark this season. His home run value is the best of all 2B, 33 last season. Utley will provide you with strong RBI.

Utley will not dazzle you with his ability to steal. With a high-powered Phillies offense, Utley will surely add many runs to his stats. Chase Utley, a solid pick at No. 2.

3. Dustin Pedroia

Coming off an impressive 2008 campaign, reigning American League M.V.P. Dustin Pedroia settles in securely as my third ranked second baseman. Pedroia really came into his own last year. He's confident and plays with a swagger.

Pedroia bats well into the .300s and will get you around 20 to 25 stolen bases. Scoring runs comes natural playing for the Red Sox.

The small guy he is, his power is underrated. Pedroia is capable of 20 home runs and 85 RBIs. Take this guy if Kinsler and Utley are gone.

4. Brian Roberts

Roberts is a speedster. His special attribute is stealing bases. If Roberts remains healthy, the newly re-signed Oriole will swipe between 40 and 50 bags. Add to that a consistent .300 batting average and over 100 runs scored. Roberts won't blow you away with his power or ability to drive in runs.

5. Brandon Phillips

Phillips makes the final cut in my top five. He had his best season in 2007, but dropped a tad in '08. If Phillips can return to hitting above .285, it increases his value. They guy has the talent to put up 30 and 30 as he proved in '07.

It's more likely he reaches 30+ stolen bases than home runs, but his power isn't in question. Phillips provides sufficient runs scored, averaging over 90 the last two seasons. At this point it's a manager's personal decision, but I say Phillips won't let you down if my top four are off the board.

Considered

Chone Figgins, Angels - Good for steals. Decent average last season. No power.

Dan Uggla, Marlins - Solid power, but poor batting average hurts his value.

Dallas Mavericks: Free Falling

Don't Stop Believing. Amazing song by Journey.

Sometimes it gets tough to keep believing in the Mavericks. Trust me, I still do, I'm a devoted M.F.F.L., but I'm sure all of us have doubt some time or another.

It's frustrating to watch.

I do think the Mavericks made the right choice to stand pat at the deadline rather than make a panic move just for the sake of it. Props to Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson.

However, the team's current roster without Jason Terry isn't a pretty sight.

Forget the win over the Kings at home. That was a gimme. Two terrible losses at Houston and at San Antonio. Now, we're talking.

Prior to the All-Star Break, Dallas had a chance to be the fourth seed in the West had they won at home against the Celtics. They lost.

Dirk has looked exhausted since that date with Boston. Nowitzki and Terry were depended on every night to play well for this team to win. With Terry injured, the burden is solely on the big German's shoulders. Therefore, its obvious why Dirk might be running out of fuel.

Today, Dallas holds only a slim one-game lead over Phoenix for the final playoff slot.

Sounds like the Mavericks are playing more along the lyrics of Tom Petty's Free Falling.

Dallas Mavericks' Trade Deadline Approach: Cuban Looking for 'Pau Gasol Deal'

The Dallas Mavericks roster as it sits today will not bring a parade to the city of Dallas in June. It's not pessimism; it's honest reality.

Josh Howard has been constantly involved in trade rumors since the summer. The Mavericks position on Howard hasn't been thoroughly clear to the public. One moment, a report would say Mark Cuban has no interest in moving the forward. A week later, new trade rumors emerge, "Mavericks actively shopping Josh Howard."

Enough is enough.

The trade deadline is fast approaching—four days.

Will Dallas be active? Yes.

Will they make an impacting deal? Very possible.

Will they 'blow up' the team? No.

The Mavericks are done making minor trades; look at the swap with the Charlotte Bobcats, for example. The deal was a realization of a signing mistake (DeSagana Diop) and a decision to restructure with pieces (Matt Carroll and Ryan Hollins) better suited for the team system.

Cuban always will do what it takes to win. Last season, he, along with the other 28 teams, witnessed the Memphis Grizzlies trade Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers. The deal was a steal.

The Lakers acquired an all-star power forward in Gasol for practically nothing. Cuban has spent time analyzing the Lakers' strategy in an effort to manufacture a similar trade for his Mavericks this season.

Possible? Very much so, due to the economic strap-hold many franchises are facing. They could possibly be willing to dump salary. There couldn't be a better time.

Dallas, if they make the playoffs, will not go deep if they decided to 'blow up' or keep the current roster intact. This is the present mindset of the Mavericks front office. This only proves more that Dallas will do something substantial by Thursday to spring the Mavericks into championship form.

Dallas is still committed to Jason Kidd. We saw this when they rejected G Baron Davis and C Chris Kaman. Two factors wrong with the trade:

1) The Clippers were attempting to lure Cuban into a trade which looked appealing on paper, but financially made absolutely no sense for the Mavericks.

2) Kidd alone is still more valuable to the Mavericks than Davis and Kaman together. Not to mention both Clippers are constantly injured and neither possess the leadership qualities Kidd provides Dallas.

Several similarities are evident with this year's Mavericks and last year's Lakers.

However, one difference is the most important of all...

The Lakers got Pau Gasol! What will the Mavericks do?

Reigning N.L. Cy Young Heads San Francisco Giants' Pitching Staff

Entering the 2008 season, the San Francisco Giants were a team high on its young pitchers Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum, both 24 now. Cain struggled through a disappointing season, totaling just an 8-14 mark. Lincecum turned in a spectacular campaign which included leading the entire M.L.B. in strikeouts (265), an 18-5 record, and receiving the well-deserved National League Cy Young Award.

It's February 2009 now, less than two months until opening day. The Giants will begin spring training with a different view of their pitching core this time around. Lincecum will take the role as rotation ace. Will he be able to handle the pressure and responsibility? Yes, the ex-Washington Husky turned N.L. All-Star is legit.

If Cain is able to turnaround last season, he could very well be a reliable compliment to form a Lincecum-Cain 1-2 punch. Jonathan Sanchez, 26, is another shot of youth in the Giants rotation. Sanchez showed glimpses of brilliance, then periods of inaccuracy and inconsistency, but signs show promise.

The projected five man rotation is set to include the three aforementioned players, and completed by two seasoned veterans:

Barry Zito

The city of San Francisco has yet to see the Zito they all expected when in 2006 he received what then was the largest contract a pitcher had ever signed. The Giants organization and fans want the 2002 version of Zito to reemerge. Don't hold your breath. Although Zito did play decently well in September, his season as a whole was disastrous. He ranked first in the N.L. with 17 losses and third with 102 walks.

Zito will need to significantly improve his K:BB ratio in order to earn more victories. If Zito improves his velocity and avoids injury, perhaps people will see some flashbacks of old Barry.

Randy Johnson

The Big Unit reporting to Giants training camp. Has an O.K. ring to it. Randy Johnson's addition to the Giants pitching staff slips under the radar, but is no small matter. Johnson brings more to the table than just his 295 career wins.

He's a 21-year veteran with a winner's attitude. His experience will prove influential in the continual development of Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, and Noah Lowry. What exactly can people expect from Johnson? In his own words:

"I'm riding off into the sunset in a lot of people's eyes, but not mine, because I'm still motivated to go out there and win," he said. "I'm surely not about five wins. I'm about winning anywhere between 15 and 20 games."

The Giants' starting rotation has been built the right way. Now it's about waiting for each part to do his job. Of the five potential starters, Lincecum and Johnson are probably the most reliable.

Cain and Sanchez will become more reliable once they can become consistently accurate. Each possess the talent to strikeout batters with the best, it's reducing the free passes that will keep them effective in the rotation.

Barry Zito is a question mark for everyone. Maybe even himself. It's not easy living up to a contract he's playing with, but earning at least half of it would be more acceptable. As stated, steady increased velocity on his pitches and staying healthy is key.

The Giants starting pitching staff contends with each team in the N.L. West.

The Colorado Rockies do not own a dominant starter. Aaron Cook is decent. Jeff Francis struggled last season. Jimenez is still potential. Added Jason Marquis, but he's just average, good at best.

San Diego's pitching staff is two-headed, for now. Jake Peavy and Chris Young. Beyond those two, the Padres have little to display with much confidence.

Similar to the Giants, the Los Angeles Dodgers' ace is a young gun. Chad Billingsley had an extraordinary year in 2008. After a rough start to the season, he took off and became the Dodgers most reliable starter. The Dodgers rotation also includes Hiroki Kuroda and last year's prospect Clayton Kershaw. The team lost Derek Lowe and Brad Penny to free agency.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are last because they present the biggest challenge. Their projected opening day rotation will likely consist of Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Jon Garland, Doug Davis, and Max Scherzer. Webb and Haren are both excellent, star-caliber pitchers. Jon Garland is a strong third option if he returns to his 2006 form. Davis and Scherzer both are pitchers who will contribute success.

The N.L. West is open for a winner. If the Giants pitching staff does its job to accommodate the team with success, will the hitting hold up its end? The answer will determine where the Giants finish this season.
