Minnesota Twins: A Look at 2010 and Beyond

So, the Twins have suffered a sweep to the New York Yankees at home Sunday losing 4-1.

In a season marked by ups and downs, the Twins have shown us their heart in an epic feat. Coach Ron Gardenhire should not be disappointed. His team treated the Minnesota faithful to a season that wasn't deserved, but fitting in the last season of the Metrodome.

Their 17-4 run will be talked about for some time. Their hot bats down the stretch will give other teams something to worry about, especially with the emergence of the long ball.

So what do we do know for another 183 more days until Twins baseball begins outdoors? We prepare and realize the truth... the Twins are a solid contender.

The pending 2010 roster looks very promising...

C - Joe Mauer, Mike Redmond, Jose Morales

Resigning Mauer will be crucial this offseason. He wants to play at home, but also wants to play for a contender. He'll want talent around him. Redmond's option may be dropped with Jose Morales coming younger and cheaper.

1B- Justin Morneau, Michael Cuddyer

No one will worry about first base depth for awhile with Cuddy having a career year in place of Morneau.

2B- Nick Punto, Brendan Harris, Alexi Casilla

Let's face it, Punto showed us why he belongs here. He had a surprising run in the postseason having an on-base-percentage of .583 in nine at-bats against the Yankees. To be fair, his defense wasn't half bad either. Casilla looks to be on thin ice next year, but may be kept around for utility.

SS- (Unsettled) Orlando Cabrera, Brendan Harris

Orlando Cabrera said he would like to return, but the Twins will likely seek talent with youth rather than Cabrera whose heading down the wrong side of the hill. Look for the Twins to honor Mauer's wishes and surround him with talent here. Otherwise, Harris shined in the playoffs in relief of third-basemen Matt Tolbert at third both on the field and with a bat.

3B- (Unsettled) Joe Crede, Danny Valencia, Matt Tolbert, Brian Buscher

Obviously, Valencia is still in Rochester and Crede is set to be a free agent again, but it wouldn't be a stretch to believe that Minnesota is going to try and bring him back cheaper with incentives. Crede coming back to push Valencia would interesting to see. Otherwise, the Twins may shop for this position. Buscher may be kept for an extra bat... maybe.

OF- RF Michael Cuddyer, CF Denard Span, LF Delmon Young, CF Carlos Gomez, RF Jason Kubel

About a month ago, I would have said the Twins should be shopping Young, when reality is, the Twins should probably shop Gomez. He won't be starting over Span or anyone else at this point after Delmon Young's late season surge has him at least ahead of Gomez (thus keeping Span in center). I wouldn't be surprised if Gardy does trade off either Gomez or Young. Young might go high and help fuel a trade option for a middle-infielder the Twins crave. Cuddy and Span are locks and aren't going anywhere.

DH- Jason Kubel

Jason had a career year after signing a multi-year deal last offseason. He also blossomed in September when the team needed him. As a power-lefty, he'll probably continue behind Morneau next year, just like this year.

Starting Rotation:

RHP Nick Blackburn

RHP Scott Baker

RHP Kevin Slowey

(Unsettled)

(Unsettled)

Other Starters Battling for a Job: LHP Brian Duensing, LHP Fransisco Liriano, RHP Carl Pavano, RHP Kyle Gibson, RHP Jeff Manship, LHP Glen Perkins, RHP Anthony Swarzak, RHP Armando Gabino

The Twins will most likely focus their attention here in free agency to round out their rotation with the fifth role being a battle. The Twins are likely to splurge on the likes of Ben Sheets, Mark Mulder or Jeff Harden. It would be ideal if they signed a lefty.

In a battle, Pavano (if resigned) would appear to be a favorite followed closely by Duensing. A veteran presence to stabilize the group would be a must. Pavano proved in the playoffs and September that he still has it and could be resigned to a small incentive laden deal.

Liriano will likely be in the pen, but until he gets his control completely back and the power he had before Tommy Jon's, he'll be bound to the bullpen or less. Gibson is a top-five draft pick worthy pitcher the Twins picked up in 2009. He's unlikely to play starting in 2010, but if he proves to be top-five pick worthy in the minors, he could provide support come Sept. 2010 (or if a collapse like this year, possibly earlier).

Perkins will likely be shipped out due to not being exactly ideal to Gardy's style and for being a disruptive influence in the clubhouse. Also, his shoulder issues aren't something you keep to yourself until it shows in your play. He'll be traded to help the infield or another starting pitcher worth pursuing.

Bullpen:

(CL) RHP Joe Nathan

RHP Matt Guerrier

LHP Jose Mijares

RHP Pat Neshek

RHP Jon Rauch

LHP Ron Mahay

RHP Jesse Crain

Other Bullpen Options and Job Battlers: RHP Boof Bonser, LHP Fransisco Liriano, RHP Bobby Keppel, LHP Brian Duensing

The Bullpen may look foggy in 2010, but it certainly will be better. No job is set it stone with Liriano and Keppel probably being the bottom of the barrel, but Bonser will likely try and grab a role after missing 2009. Nathan is running out of years and may soon see his role be handed off to a new closer with more nerve to hold the likes of two-run lead in New York in the ninth.

Neshek, like Bonser, will be monitored closely after sitting all season. After Neshek's Tommy Jon surgery, he'll be eyed very closely, especially with replacements waiting in the wings.

Crain may see an upgrade soon into a set-up role again soon. Guerrier's role is secure, however.

---

The 2010 season will also feature the opening of Target field, which should prove to revitalize the franchise excite fans with outdoor baseball. Even when snow might fall in October.

The cold shouldn't effect too much, but the Twins speed and use of AstroTurf is no longer in effect on opposing teams and may see a shift in team design and set up.

With a young rotation and a veteran, yet young club, the Twins could find themselves here next season, however, the circumstances might not be in Game 163 or as a bottom division leader.

Final Thoughts...

The Twins proved to be a bit feistier then the Yankees had originally anticipated. The Twins lead in all three games at one point. On top of that, they actually outhit the bombers 29 to 23, however, six of the Yankees hits were home runs that ultimately decided the series.

Twins fans should not dwell on how 2009 ended. The fans of Minnesota got a round of the Twins playing on empty heading into the post season. Winning the central definitely gave the Twins something to ride heading into 2010 and onward.

Heading into 2010, the Twins will have the likes of the 2006 AL MVP, Justin Morneau, their now three-time AL Batting Champ and rightfully 2009 AL MVP Joe Mauer, career-year men in Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer as well as probably the deeper pitching rotations in the American League.

On that thought, the Twins played well and proved they are not a middleweight and would not go down easily. The Dome may now be gone for the Minnesota Twins, but let's rejoice in the future as the 2010 Twins carry a new banner for baseball in Minnesota and a new rep as they carry their fifth division title in eight years.

Umpire Phil Cuzzi Showed Us Why Instant Replay on Fair/Foul Balls Is Needed

I sat at a local pub this Friday night taking in Game Two of the ALDS of the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees. I thought it would be an interesting game, to be sure. If Minnesota would win this game, they would split the series with Games Three and Four at the Metrodome. With two wins at home, they could win the series without ever returning to New York. However, this did not happen.

In a game that proved to be a game of broken opportunities for the Twins, it appeared that even late inning blown calls were fitting to a game not going their way.

Starters Blackburn and Burnett pitched near perfection keeping their opponents hitless and guessing.

In the fourth inning, Twins center fielder Carlos Gomez overran second base on a single with two outs and got caught before teammate Delmon Young stepped on home plate.

Throw in countless questionable pitch calls and many knew this game was going to be a close one. After Minnesota scored in the eighth inning to lead the game 3-1 heading into the ninth.

Upon entering the bottom of then ninth, Mark Teixeira hit a lead off single followed by a clutch home run by Alex Rodriguez off of Twins closer Joe Nathan blowing a save opportunity.

Upon escaping the inning, the Twins would try and settle it in extras. After escaping a near miss the bottom of the 10th, the Twins would open the top of the 11th with AL Batting Champ, Joe Mauer. He opened up on a hit down the left-field line.

Left-field umpire Phil Cuzzi called the hit foul despite being clearly fair by about a foot AND hitting New York left fielder Melky Cabrera's glove.

This play infuriated me not only as a Twins fan, but as a fan of baseball all-around. Especially after the following hitters Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer followed up with singles to fill the bases.

I did feel a bit of justice as a Twins fan after seeing Mauer single up the middle later in the at-bat, but afterwards, a big sign pointed to this replay and pointed to a bigger problem that just can't be overlooked...

That even an umpire not even 15-feet away staring right at the play can miss an obvious call.

With that said, here's what I wonder Bud Selig will try to 'ignore' in order to not instate replay on fair/foul balls...

This was a playoff game. High stakes are a part of it and makes the games worth more. This means essentially that the blown call(s) would be an even bigger cost to who truly is the better team.

This was an extra-inning game. The later the game, the more tedious the calling should be. This big of a blown call seems only bigger when the game pivots on every play.

This was a pivotal game. By a Twins victory, the advantage goes to Minnesota with the next two games being played in Minnesota. If Minnesota wins those two, the Twins could be preparing for the ALCS rather then staving off elimination.

This was the only game on. Kind of harsh when every baseball fanatic witnessed this.

This was a nationally televised game. So not only is every fan watching baseball watching this game, but everyone in the country.

Left-field umpire Phil Cuzzi was starring right at the play.

Cuzzi was 15-feet away.

He missed the fact that it hit Melky Cabrera's glove...in fair territory... and still bounced...in fair territory.

And the big one...he had no obstruction.

Let's be serious. You can NOT miss this call in the 11th inning of a playoff game in a pivotal game that could ultimately decide these team's fates.

At no other time has replay made more sense in a modern day scene. In the playoffs, no team should have to suffer a loss, especially when two hits follow a supposed double. At worst, the Twins would have been up one run heading into the bottom of the 11th. With that said, the game would have continued at a 4-4 tie.

Food For Thought

In my opinion, the Yankees have never looked any weaker.

First they pay more then the Twins payroll in pickups last offseason to upgrade their roster, then they make the ballpark so shallow the Twins could become the bombers, then umps hand them games...what's next?

Battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe: Minnesota Gophers Vs Wisconsin Badgers

Paul Bunyan's Axe is a symbol of one of the most heated rivalries in college football, representing the oldest and most-played rivalry in Division I-A football, with 118 editions dating back 1890.

The Golden Gophers lead the all-time series, 59-51-8, while the Badgers lead the Axe's series, 34-24-3.

Earlier, the schools played for the "Slab of Bacon", a piece of wood with an M or a W, depending from which angle one would look on it. Minnesota led that series 11-3 until the trophy was "lost" in 1943.

It would not resurface until 1994 after the renovation of Camp Randall Stadium and the "Bacon" was found in a storage room. To this day Wisconsin "holds" the trophy in its football office (despite being 3-11 during the trophy's overall series).

The Paul Bunyan Axe would be instituted as the trophy in the series in 1948 (Gophers would be 3-1 in that stretch until the Axe was instituted); the scores of each game are recorded on the axe's handle, which is six feet long.

When the game ends, if the team holding the trophy wins, they run to their own sideline, take the axe and carry it around the field. If the team not holding the trophy wins, they are allowed to run to their opponents' sideline and "steal" the axe away.

Last year, the Badgers defeated the Gophers 35-32 in 2008 to retain the axe in Madison.

However, this year will be quite different to say the least.

In a game of balanced teams, the Gophers (3-1) face an undefeated Badger (4-0) team that has yet to play outside the confines of Camp Randall Stadium with their biggest win being this past week, 38-30 over a Michigan State still searching for it's soul.

However, Minnesota has yet to tally a big win as their two notable performances include their prior victory over Northwestern, 35-24, and their close loss to then #8 Cal, 35-21 which they were tied at 21 entering the fourth quarter.

Both teams are obviously seeking respect in a Big Ten full of under-achievers now with #15 Penn State falling from grace and #9 Ohio State trying to remain a top 10 team. With teams like Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan stepping up into the alotted role of a dark horse in the Big Ten.

Offensive Rush

Wisconsin Badgers—197.8 Yards/Game, 10 Rushing TD's
Minnesota Golden Gophers—105.8 Yards/Game five Rushing TD's

Until last week, one might say that Wisconsin holds a distinct advantage in the running game. Then Duane Bennett ran for 89 yards and three touchdowns as part of a 166 yard effort by the Gophers.

However, Wisconsin sophomore John Clay also put up 142 yards and a score of his own and has averaged 99.5 yards a game. Unlike Minnesota's three headed combo though, Clay is the primary running threat with junior Zach Brown (172) is his alternate that has put yardage similar to Bennett (210).

Overall, Minnesota's offensive line is still learning to use their bulk size and charge ahead for yards versus the pass blocking they're accustomed to. On top of that, Bennet and Eskridge are still learning how to read holes in run-blocking schemes.

Wisconsin has shown more balance in their play-calling however compared to Minnesota's pass-heavy offense.

(Min) RB Duane Bennett—210 Rush Yards, four Rushing Touchdowns
(Wis) RB John Clay—398 Rush Yards, four Rushing Touchdowns

ADVANTAGE—Wisconsin

Offensive Pass

Wisconsin Badgers—230.3 Yards/Game, eight Passing TD's
Minnesota Golden Gophers—221.5 Yards/Game, five Passing TD's

With two of the finest quarterbacks in the Big Ten set to do battle, one has to wonder who will make the bigger dent. The Gophers have the best receiver in the Big Ten and arguably the country compared to the Badgers receiving core which has posted great numbers as a squad and appears to have the best depth in the Big Ten.

Senior Eric Decker is a yard shy of 500 yards on the season and has proved time and time again that he should be at bare minimum double covered. With how much he's in sync with Weber, it's pretty obvious where the Gophers offense lies.

However, if the Gophers want to take the Badgers by surprise, they should work with those under Decker to make the most of their passing game. Hayo Carpenter and Brandon Green are slated as the top backups, yet neither has a 1/4 of the yards the Decker has.

Of Wisconsin Badger redshirt junior Scott Tolzien, the Gophers should keep all 22 eyes on. Tolzien has improved in the past couple games getting the plays well balanced and well represented. The Badgers have three receivers at 200 yards or more (Nick Toon, Isaac Anderson and Garret Graham) and have seven touchdowns between those three players.

Throw in the fact that starting defensive end Cedric McKinley and backup safety Tim Dandridge have been suspended for two games due to a violation of team rules, the Gophers are going in a little lighter then usual.

Quote To Note: “He’s a good player. Both look very poised and accurate with the football. I think our guy’s a very good football player.”—Minnesota head coach Tim Brewster on comparisons between Wisconsin quarterback Scott Tolzien and Minnesota quarterback Adam Weber.

(Min) WR Eric Decker—35 Receptions, 499 Yards, four Touchdowns, one pass Touchdown (124.8 Yards/Game)
(Wis) WR Andrew Brewer—12 Receptions, 236 Yards (78.7 Yards/Game)

(Min) QB Adam Weber—75-for-129 (58.1%), 879 Pass Yards, five Touchdowns, five INT
(Wis) QB Scott Tolzien—66-for-99 (66.6%), 884 Pass Yards, eight Touchdowns, two INT

ADVANTAGE—TIE

Defensive Rush

Wisconsin Badgers—145.8 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—144.5 Yards/Game

As already mentioned, the Gophers are without defensive end Cedric McKinley for the next two home games and against arguably the biggest game of the year for the Gophers.

By the numbers, this looks like a stalemate. However, through the schedules, only one team really sticks out on Wisconsin's schedule so far, and that's Michigan State. Minnesota on the other hand has faced the triple option of Air Force and Cal's Jahvid Best.

With that taken into consideration, one has to wonder how big of a loss McKinley will have.

Not to mention Wisconsin's defense is tied with Iowa in the Big Ten for the most take aways with 12, of which five were by fumble recovery.

ADVANTAGE—(Slight) Wisconsin

Defensive Pass

Wisconsin Badgers—226.0 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—213.3 Yards/Game

The Gophers boast the #5 defense in the Big Ten against the pass although they are only better the Wisconsin by so much.

Wisconsin's defense has now been reformed with seven new starters in more of a playmaking defense then their traditional 3-4 fundamental style.

Gophers head coach Tim Brewster announced Monday morning the suspensions for McKinley and backup Safety Dandridge.

Minnesota doesn’t have a ton of depth at safety or defensive end. And they’re facing the Big Ten’s most efficient passer in Scott Tolzien, who has thrown eight touchdowns and two picks. The Gophers will need to pressure him as much possible if they hope to stay in the game let alone win it.

Key Stat: Wisconsin has seven interceptions to Minnesota's two.

Note to ponder: Former Wisconsin recruit Kim Royston is now playing safety for the Golden Gophers.

ADVANTAGE—Minnesota

Momentum

Wisconsin Badgers—On five-game winning streak over MN; Won last 12 of 14
Minnesota Golden Gophers—Among top three teams to take lead in the Big Ten

Wisconsin is undefeated at 4-0 (1-0 Big Ten).

Minnesota's lone loss is to the then #8 Cal, otherwise 3-1 (1-0 Big Ten).

Wisconsin QB Scott Tolzien won Big Ten offensive player of the week last week for his performance against Michigan State.

Nate Triplett and Lee Campbell both have earned player of the week honors in the Big Ten. Triplett also won the National defensive player of the week against Air Force in week two.

Biggest game of the season should motivate both teams without even mentioning the details involved.

Big Ten pecking order still seeking an identity, the Gophers get a shot against one of the league's three undefeated teams at their new home, TCF Bank Stadium.

ADVANTAGE—Minnesota

Overall Advantage?

At the Bank, the nod is for Minnesota. It could become a shootout if both running games falter early. Otherwise, expect the score to be somewhere in the ball park of 30-40 points, especailly with both teams fighting for the one prize that means more then any bowl win would...
Kip's NFL Gameday (Power Rankings) Reveiw: 32 Comments On Week Three

In a week three of surprises, the NFL was shook up after two interesting weeks to open up 2009. At this point, who would've thought that the Denver Broncos would be 4-0? Who would have thought that Cincinnati would come back and beat Green Bay and Pittsburgh?

Come from behind victories were the game-plan of choice for many teams like Cincinnati, Chicago and Minnesota. Other teams like the Detroit Lions found redemption after a year without glory.

Without further adieu, here's a run-down of 32 comments on 32 teams after the third Sunday's festivities...

1. New York Giants (3-0)- Shutting out Tampa in Tampa. Not bad for the 2008 Super Bowl Champions. W 24-0 vs Tampa Bay

2. Baltimore Ravens (3-0)- Offense goes off against a Cleveland team struggling to find itself. Flacco leads league in passing for the week with 342 yards. Overall, best balanced team in the game. W 34-3 vs Cleveland

3. New Orleans Saints (3-0)- 125 Points in three weeks. Defense steps up against Buffalo offense. W 27-7 vs Buffalo

4. Minnesota Vikings (3-0)- Favre saves Vikes with :02 to play. Still having doubts? W 27-24 San Fransisco

5. Indianapolis Colts (3-0)- Three straight 300-yard pass days for Manning to start the season. W 31-10 Arizona

6. New York Jets (3-0)- Sanchez has Jets fans believing in Ryan. Rest of the NFL will sleep on it. Jets defeat a hungry Titans that would be willing to trade league leading performances for wins. W 24-17 Tennessee

7. Philadelphia Eagles (2-1)- Kevin Kolb has his day, McNabb and Westbrook look on. Philly considers giving (Mr. Irrelevant) Michael Vick the key to the city. W 34-14 Kansas City

8. New England Patriots (2-1)- Big win over Atlanta keeps hopes alive. Brady and receivers not in 2007 form. W 26-10 Atlanta

9. San Diego Chargers (2-1)- Baltimore game speaks volumes now. Chargers light up Raiders, defense shines. W 23-3 Oakland

10. Atlanta Falcons (2-1)- Second half falter puts Falcons behind Saints and shows holes in Falcons defense. L 10-26 New England

11. Denver Broncos (3-0)- Sure they beat Cincinnati, Cleveland and Oakland... but we'll wait till after their next three game stretch against Dallas, New England and San Diego before we start talking AFC West title. However, holding each team to 7 points or less is impressive. W 23-3 Denver

12. Green Bay Packers (2-1)- Rodgers looks sharp, but if they want to contend in the NFC North, losses to Cincy can't happen. W 36-17 St. Louis

13. Chicago Bears (2-1)- Big wins over Pittsburgh and Seattle negate fallout against Packers. If Cutler stays hot, watch out. W 25-19 Seattle

14. San Fransisco 49ers (2-1)- San Fran is running hot. Upset in Minnesota changes nothing, unless Arizona gets out of its funk, Hill could lead this team to the post season. L 24-27 Minnesota

15. Cincinnati Bengals (2-1)- First an upset in Green Bay and then an upset over Pittsburgh at home... either both those teams are falling or the Bengals could be legit. (Oh my!) W 23-20 Pittsburgh

16. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2)- Probably the only team in football that could be under .500 and still be considered a playoff slated team. Then again... losing to Chicago and Cincy is kinda a bad omen. Without a running game, Pitt players should start making January plans now. L 20-23 Cincinnati

17. Arizona Cardinals (1-2)- With only a win at Jacksonville, these Cards don't look like the 'cinderella' team we remember last season. Fumbles will haunt this team, especially in the red zone. L 10-31 Indianapolis

18. Dallas Cowboys (1-1)- Romo needs to step up Monday against Carolina or he may be second-guessed all season. Cowboys defense needs to step up. 8:30 EDT Mon

19. Tennessee Titans (0-3)- Only 0-3 team in the league that could probably turn it around. Chris Johnson is a legit running threat, but until the Titans can hold on late and quit playing from behind, they are in for an even deeper drop. L 24-17 New York Jets

20. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2)- The franchise needs a better fan base and a better quarterback. Other then that, MJD is the only noticeable feature in Jacksonville. W 31-24

21. Buffalo Bills (1-2)- Almost pulled one on New England early on, but after facing New Orleans, they'll struggle to float at .500. Owens almost has little impact. L 7-27 New Orleans

22. Seattle Seahawks (1-2)- The only thing more unfortunate then the Seahawks having seven players sit Sunday was their disgusting phloem-colored jerseys. L 19-25 Chicago

23. Houston Texans (1-2)- Steve Slaton is still finding his legs while Schuab is proving his worth over and over. Andre Johnson deserves a better team. L 24-31 Jacksonville

24. Detroit Lions (1-2)- Out of shadow, but into the fire. Being a .500 team is a reasonable high limit goal for this team. W 19-14 Washington

25. Washington Redskins (1-2)- Until Campbell is replaced, the Redskins or doomed to mediocrity. Zorn will be looking over his shoulder for awhile. L 14-19 Detroit

26. Miami Dolphins (0-3)- After an improbable run last year, the Wildcat looks tame. Unless the passing game opens up and the defense finds its pulse, the Dolphins may return to a team struggling for a .500 record. L 13-23 San Diego

27. Carolina Panthers (0-2)- After two horrid weeks for the reigning NFC South champs, Dallas offers a chance of jump starting a stalled season. Delhomme needs a big game to cancel out any doubt on his job security. 8:30 EDT Mon

28. Oakland Raiders (1-2)- They aren't as bad as they looked, but with Russell at the helm, might as well have Al Davis taking snaps or calling plays. L 3-23 Denver

29. Kansas City Chiefs (0-3)- Coach Daley is experiencing the growing pains of picking up a broken team. L 14-34 Philadelphia

30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-3)- This defense needs to mesh more, Freeman may get his shot and the Bucs need to find out who they are having more replaced parts then your '97 Chevy. L 0-24 New York Giants

31. Cleveland Browns (0-3)- If Mangini's Browns go 0-6, they won't be his anymore. Browns leadership already have to put up with the Favre-injury thing. Besides, without a quarterback, the Browns are as good as doomed to double-digit losses. L 3-34 Baltimore

32. St. Louis Rams (0-3)- Donnie Avery IS NOT that good. Steven Jackson is the only football player on this team. Until they win a game, they will be living in the shadow of the 2008 Lions. L 17-36 Green Bay

Minnesota Golden Gophers Top Northwestern Wildcats 35-24

Duane Bennett had a response to the critics who doubted Minnesota's rushing attack. He had a stellar day behind Minnesota quarterback Adam Weber. Bennett led the team in a day of tension and risk of high scoring at every turn.

Bennett got the offense rolling with 86 rushing yards, the most of the year, and three touchdowns. Freshmen Kevin Whaley and MarQuies Gray followed with 31 and 33-yard rushing days respectively on five carries apiece.

Eric Decker also did what Eric Decker does best, with an 83-yard day and two touchdowns.

However, for the Gophers, much was to be desired in a tense win in Evanston, Illinois. In the first half, Weber threw the ball to no one other then Eric Decker and tight end Nick Tow-Arnett. One thing that the Minnesota needs to address is spreading the ball around in the spread version of their pro-style offense. Weber would only hit one other receiver in the second half, Brandon Green.

The 309 passing yards the Gophers allowed was also a disapproving look. However, where they needed to control the game, they surprisingly did.

The Gophers came out rolling on offense in the rushing game by netting 166 rush yards, destroying Northwestern's 64 net rush yards and showing an excellent display of rush defense.

The Gophers defense also tacked up three turnovers (to Northwestern's one) with two fumble recoveries, including a nail-in-the-coffin fumble inside the Northwestern 20-yard line as time ran down.

Weber's performance left more to be desired, however, going 15-for-26 for 186 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

They trailed briefly, 24-21, after Northwestern’s Mike Kafka hit a leaping Brendan Mitchell with a 13-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of the third quarter.

Minnesota started the fourth with an 83-yard scoring drive, getting a 10-yard pass from Weber to Brandon Green on third down at the Northwestern 23 before Bennett ran it in from the four. That made it 28-24 and Minnesota hung on from there.

Northwestern rallied from 21 down to a 49-48 double overtime win in Evanston in 2007, and last year sent Minnesota into a season-ending tailspin with a 24-17 last-second victory.

Tale of the Tape: Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. Northwestern Wildcats

After 2-1 performances in their non-conference schedules, the Gophers and Wildcats are hungry to start their Big Ten schedules off well. Here's a quick look at the matchup taking place in Evanston this weekend.

Offensive Rush

Northwestern Wildcats—152.7 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—85.7 Yards/Game

Minnesota is still struggling to get the ball moving on the ground this year. They have yet to have a 100-yard day and worse yet, they are struggling to move the offense period without the support of Eric Decker. Northwestern isn't much better, but has found much more success.

As far as the best runner on each team, it's pretty much a wash. DeLeon Eskridge has proven to be just as big a threat as Bennett, maybe more so. Overall, Northwestern's offensive line is better meshed for the run game and working with Simmons. Gophers bulky line still needs to work on run-blocking and working with the two young running backs.

(Min) RB Duane Bennett—121 Rush Yards, 1 Rushing TD
(NU) RB Stephen Simmons—150 Rush Yards, 2 Rushing TDs

ADVANTAGE—Northwestern

Offensive Pass

Northwestern Wildcats—278.3 Yards/Game, Five TDs
Minnesota Golden Gophers—233.3 Yards/Game, Four TDs

On paper, it would appear that the Wildcats are a deeper passing threat then the Gophers when in reality it will be very close. The Wildcats are going to find Minnesota's defense against the pass a little bit more physical and difficult then before.

Minnesota's pass defense will make the Northwestern passing attack slightly less effective...as a result, the Gophers should be a stalemate in the passing game.

Last week, however, Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka had a career day passing for 390 yards, three touchdowns, a three-yard rushing score and a 24-yard receiving score...becoming the first Big Ten player to do so...however, it was all in vain as Syracuse would pick off Kafka late in the game and it would cost the Wildcats the game.

Gophers wideout Eric Decker also just came off a big game against No. 6 Cal with 119 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns and a seven-yard strike to freshman Marqueis Gray.

Overall, "Deck" as Northwestern Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald calls him should keep Minnesota in just as much as Kafka should Northwestern. The game will be decided ultimately by defense.

(Min) WR Eric Decker—27 Receptions, 415 Yards, 2 TDs (138.3 Yards/Game)
(NU) WR Andrew Brewer—12 Receptions, 236 Yards (78.7 Yards/Game)

(Min) QB Adam Weber—60-for-103 (58.3%), 693 Pass Yards, 3 TDs, 4 INT
(NU) QB Mike Kafka—64-for-86 (74.4%), 740 Pass Yards, 3 TDs, 2 INT

ADVANTAGE—TIE

Defensive Rush

Northwestern Wildcats—120.7 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—171.3 Yards/Game

Although Minnesota's defense is more physical, Northwestern will be better against the run simply because the Gophers are poor at their running game. Overall, both are probably about the same, but in this game overall, the Wildcats will look better.

Numbers wise though, Minnesota did hold Jahvid Best to under 20 yards in the second half of their game against Cal last week. With that said, it's hard to argue one over the other.

ADVANTAGE—Northwestern

Defensive Pass

Northwestern Wildcats—211.3 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—181.3 Yards/Game

The numbers tell a pretty good picture of what to expect, however the Wildcats have gotten more picks and put more pressure on offenses. Overall though, Minnesota plays tighter defense keeping the ball in front of them.

Key Stat: Northwestern has five interceptions with five different players.

Minnesota has only allowed two passing touchdowns to Northwestern's four.

ADVANTAGE—Minnesota

Momentum

Northwestern Wildcats—Despite close game with Syracuse, NU should be 3-0
Minnesota Golden Gophers—Close Game with No. 8

Minnesota has two come-from-behind victories, almost three barring the Cal breakdown.

Minnesota has defeated Syracuse where as Northwestern didn't.

Northwestern's Mike Kafka had a career game doing what no player in the Big Ten has ever done scoring a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game.

Northwestern has defeated the Gophers the last three years in shootout fashion in the final seconds of each game.

ADVANTAGE—Minnesota

Overall Advantage

Minnesota should defeat the Wildcats in front of a hostile crowd, but it should be a high scoring affair.

Minnesota Twins: A Premature Look at the 2010 Pitching Rotation and Bullpen

As the Twins head down the stretch and fight to play on into October, one has to see the success of certain players that are stepping up. Certain players like Orlando Cabrera could find themselves back with the Twins next year to help balance a lineup in dire need of it.

But what of the pitching rotation? Obviously some of the pitchers that started the season in the rotation either finished it on DL or in the bullpen... how does that factor in? How does success of players from Rochester affect the overall outlook?

Well, here's what we got... and what the Twins should do to wrap up a rotation for the 2010...
Begin Slideshow

Even When Brett Favre Isn't a Factor, He Is

As we now have entered the third week of the regular season, the NFL has begun revolving; deciding early fates of teams with playoff hopes and dreams. Those dreams have bits and pieces that are decided by one or two players. These players have games decided by single plays in single moments...and sometimes by single yards.

One thing is for sure, the Vikings have a key facet that just won't ever be recognized for anything less than an attention-getter.

Even after Adrian Peterson's monster game in week one against the Cleveland Browns rushing for 180 yards and three touchdowns, one of them for 64 yards, Brett Favre was the talk of the town.

He was probably the only QB in the league that threw for 110 yards and one touchdown that got as much publicity.

Then after a sloppy first half in Detroit, the Vikings came back to defeat the Lions that are still living in the shadow of the 0-16 season of 2008. Many attribute Favre's 23-for-27, 155 yard, two touchdown game to a game where the Vikings came back to win.

Once again, a Viking other than the Hall of Famer had a career game. Linebacker Chad Greenway recovered a fumble and intercepted two of Lions quarterback Matt Stafford's passes that potentially saved the game for Minnesota. He would then get named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance.

Yes, Favre had a favorable performance, but being 30th in the NFL for yards usually doesn't give you front page status. Once again, he did break the consecutive start record held by former Viking Jim Marshall, but seriously.

It makes me wonder if the Vikings knew that he would make the headlines every week based on what he did or didn't do. I seriously wonder if the Vikings realize that every week until the 2010 offseason, Brett Favre will be the talk of football whenever Minnesota is mentioned.

Even Purple Jesus himself, Adrian Peterson, can't get any respect as Favre is accredited to Peterson's success of opening the run-game. What does Favre NOT do?

I know I'm all for a Super Bowl in Minnesota, but correct me if I sound a bit concerned and think this is getting a bit ridiculous.

Brett currently has 265 yards, 3 TDs, no picks and an impressive 110.2 passer rating after two weeks in purple.

What Are the Minnesota Golden Gophers' Top Five Priorities After Week Three?

At this point, the Gophers need significant help in some areas more than others. After an abysmal breakdown in the fourth quarter against Cal, some insurance must be made before the Gophers can really be evaluated with the likes of the top of the Big Ten.

Let's have a look...

5. Scoring Earlier Is a MUST

When you go out and play football, you don't just play the final 30 minutes—you play the whole hour of it. The Gophers have had a problem with this entering 2009, with Syracuse being a lone exception. Air Force was a clear sign that the Gophers always seem to come out flat and have to from behind to get victories.

In the Cal game, however, fighting off the No. 8—now No. 6—team in the country proved too much. Thus, if the Gophers want to hang with the teams in the Big Ten, they need to score and score early.

4. Defense Needs to Focus on Playing Against the Run

After an Air Force team that is run-happy and playing Jahvid Best, arguably the best running back in the nation, the Gophers have had their run defense tested full well in their non-conference schedule. The key now will be how they approach playing in a conference where the team that typically runs the best wins.

The Gophers will need to keep the ball in front of them but still be able to keep the runners on the sidelines and force teams to pass on them. The Gophers have proven their pass defense is above average at least and should use that to their advantage.

With only one (Purdue) of their upcoming three Big Ten games against a team averaging more rushing yards allowed, the Gophers definitely have room to improve. Getting the defensive linemen prepared will be vital.

3. Own the Home

One thing I've observed of the Gophers playing at home is that their new stadium is a fitting environment for the Big Ten: loud, hostile, and eventually... cold. The Gophers need to learn to thrive in these conditions if they want to be successful at home.

The stadium is considered the finest college football venue in the country as far as quality. With that said, the Gophers should use their close intimate surroundings to their advantage and play with pride at home. Their 2009 schedule gives them friendly games at home for the rest of the season with winnable games against Wisconsin, Purdue, Michigan State, Illinois, and lowly South Dakota State.

If Tim Brewster plans on eyeing the top 25, living up to a hostile home environment will be key. He'll need to psych up his boys to play at home. Recruiting should also improve if the "Bank" proves to be as good of a venue as its other Big Ten counterparts.

2. Someone Besides Decker Needs to Step Up; Where's Hayo Carpenter?

I'm very curious what the Gophers will do on offense when they keep getting caught behind and have to play from behind without the ability to hit anyone besides Eric Decker.

At the beginning of the year there was much buzz over junior college transfer Hayo Carpenter, but has he caught one pass as a Gopher yet? He was supposed to be a shoo-in No. 2 guy, but I haven't seen him in games or playing at wideout. I have, however, seen him on kick returns, but I honestly think Troy Stoudermire is best suited for that...and he's at least caught a decent workload from Adam Weber.

This works both ways though. Weber needs to quit being one-dimensional and look for someone other than Decker to move the ball. Defenses are going to be unforgiving on Decker, and now is the time to get someone other than Decker as a focal point.

A sub-point to this is Weber working on playing in the clutch. His two picks late against Cal were awkward and need to be addressed ASAP if the Gophers want to contend late in games.

1. Run, Run, RUN!

85.7 yards a game is a crying shame in the Big Ten conference. Even traditional bottom feeder Indiana is averaging 146.7 yards a game. The Gophers need to work with Duane Bennett and DeLeon Eskridge A LOT. If either back wants to excel, hitting holes and using field vision will be key.

Bennett currently has a measly 121 yards, while Eskridge has 103. That needs to change FAST. Part of it is the heftier offensive line that isn't exactly as skilled as it was last season. Then again, against Cal, holes were clearly visible but opted against by Eskridge or Bennett.

If the Gophers want to win in the Big Ten, running the ball is the key.

Gophers-Bears: Jahvid Best, Late Picks Cost Gophers, Cal Defeats Minnesota 35-21

Glen Mason handed the Gophers an opportunity this past week that he had put in motion way back in 2002 when he still coached the maroon and gold of Minnesota. And until the beginning of the fourth quarter, it almost seemed like the Gophers would capitalize on it.

Unfortunately for the maroon and gold, the Golden Bears of Cal capitalized on their broken opportunities and put their fate in the hands of their best player, Jahvid Best, who finished the game with 131 yards and five touchdowns—two of them beyond 25 yards and the other three being two yards or less.

Not to take away from Best's game, he obviously proved he was one of the best in the country, but his five scores are NOT the reason for that (maybe the first two scores, but not the other three). He had his first game under 200 yards, ending a six-game streak dating back to last season.

But no matter, the Gophers had their chance as their best player, Eric Decker proved to be the player that kept them in the game. Decker caught six passes for 119 yards, two scores and even threw a seven-yard pass to freshmen quarterback MarQueis Gray for a touchdown. It seemed after that score, the Gophers had a significant chance being tied 21-21 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

What made the game so interesting is that Brewster prepared those boys to go in with nothing to lose. The Gophers had played high-risk football, relying on an air game to Decker versus trying to stick to their running-game, especially when they were trailing in the third quarter.

It also helped that the Gopher defense had figured out Jahvid Best in the second half.

Until his final scores, he had barely scraped 10 yards together in the second half. With that, the Gophers can take away a little credit for holding one of the higher-powered offenses in the country at bay in the second half...at least until their breakdown midway through the fourth quarter.

Adam Weber had a decent game going 'til the fourth quarter. He had been throwing almost everything to Decker and was coming up big. Overall Weber went 21-for-25 for 252 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. One must look past the fact that two of those interceptions cost the Gophers late in the game, making their defense have the fate of the game against Best and rest of the Cal offense.

In the end, two late picks transmitted to two Jahvid Best touchdowns and ultimately a Cal win. Many would call this a whoopin', but I think people that say that just looked at the box score and were like... "Oh, Best had five touchdowns and Weber threw three picks...no wonder Cal beat Minnesota."

What no one will see or understand is just how close of a game this really was. The Gophers opted to play risky ball in order to hang with big No. 8 Cal and they paid for it in the end...however, that's not to say that Minnesota won't have their chances against other top ranked teams this year.

After three games against middle of the road Big Ten teams (@Northwestern, Wisconisn and Purdue) the Gophers travel to No. 5 Penn State and then to No. 13 Ohio State. It will be a tough couple weeks, but if the Gophers play anything like this past week, they just might just give the likes of Nittany Lions or Buckeyes more then they can chew.

Tale of the Tape: Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. No. 8 California Golden Bears

In a game that defines a lot, the Golden Gophers and Golden Bears are set to meet in a golden game on a golden stage.

According to Jonathan Okanes, who covers Cal football for the Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune, it's "hard to say" where the Golden Bears of California are after the first two weeks "because the caliber of the opponents is a bit questionable."

"I thought Maryland would be better but the Terps struggled to put away James Madison last week. And then Cal played an FCS team in its second game. But I would say that it appears the Bears' passing game is improved, which is the key to the season."

The Gophers have started their seasons with a rough win over Syracuse in overtime and a big win over a run-heavy Air Force in their home opener. In both games, the defense proved ready to play. However, the Gopher offense has still been sputtering and eventually finding itself somewhere in the second half.

Both teams have yet to have a serious test to gauge themselves until this Saturday, but who carries an edge in certain aspects and what will it mean for the both teams overall?

Offensive Rush

California Golden Bears—294 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—111.5 Yards/Game

The numbers tell the story as California, much like Air Force, is a run-based team. Fortunately for the Gophers, the Bears don't run a spread option. However, it does bolster a Heisman Trophy candidate in Jahvid Best who is considered one of the best backs in the country.

Running back Duane Bennett is still trying to find himself in the Gophers offense and is barely managing 50 yards a game. With that said, the Bears obviously are going to hold the advantage in the running game.

(Min) RB Duane Bennett—105 Rush Yards, 1 Rushing TD
(Cal) RB Jahvid Best—281 Rush Yards, 42 Pass Yards, 3 Rushing TDs, 1 Receiving TD

ADVANTAGE—California

Offensive Pass

California Golden Bears—231.5 Yards/Game, five TDs
Minnesota Golden Gophers—233.5 Yards/Game, one TD

Unlike the rushing game, the numbers don't really tell the whole story here. What helps to note, both in the rushing and passing game is that the Bears played two cupcake games at home against the likes of Maryland (52-13) and Eastern Washington (59-7).

All said and done, the Gophers have distinct advantage in the passing game with Eric Decker. He should (like most weeks) be the one to fear on the Gophers offense. Weber is completing a measly 54 percent of his passes right now and will need to fix that to be able to beat the Bears in the air.

(Min) WR Eric Decker—19 Receptions, 296 Yards (148 Yards/Game)
(Cal) WR Marvin Jones—6 Receptions, 103 Yards (51.5 Yards/Game)

(Min) QB Adam Weber—39-for-71 (54.9%), 467 Pass Yards, one TD, one INT
(Cal) QB Kevin Riley—30-for-46 (65.2%), 446 Pass Yards, five TDs, 0 INT

ADVANTAGE—Minnesota

Defensive Rush

California Golden Bears—75 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—175.5 Yards/Game

One thing that may decide the game early is who has control of the running game (not necessarily the team that's running all over the other). By the numbers, you'd think that Cal would have a hay day with the Gopher defense, but after a closer examination, you see that's not exactly the case.

Cal has given up just 150 yards on the ground this season so far to Minnesota's 351. Then again, 261 of those yards were from Air Force's potent spread option offense that is meant to move 90 percent based on the run. On top of that, Cal's starting couple games of Maryland and Eastern Washington is hardly comparable to that of Syracuse or Air Force.

Jonathan Okanes' take on the Gophers side is, "Like most opponents, Minnesota will have to slow down Cal's running game." If the Gophers can slow down Best, Cal will be forced into the passing game.

Of the Bears, Okanes' said, "The Gophers also will have to successfully move the ball through the air because the Bears are very good at stopping the run." With that said, could the game prove to be high scoring.

Key Players:

(Cal) Linebacker Mike Mohamed
(Min) Lee Campbell (Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for Week One)
(Min) Nate Triplett (Walter Camp/National Defensive Player of the Week for Week Two)

Words to ponder...

"Cal has one of the best defensive fronts we’ll see all year, so it was a good test for our O-line."—Maryland Terrapins Quarterback Chris Turner's comments after losing 52-13 to the Bears on Sept. 5, 2009.

ADVANTAGE—Tie

Defensive Pass

California Golden Bears—194 Yards/Game
Minnesota Golden Gophers—146 Yards/Game

Minnesota would seem to have a small advantage by the numbers against the pass, but much like the defensive rush yards appear to favor Cal and are screwed by Air Force, likewise, the defensive pass is in the other aspect that doesn't show an accurate picture of Minnesota's defense.

Air Force's lack of passing game makes this comparison hard to compare, yet at the same time, they performed well against Syracuse.

It sounds almost imperative though, that the Bears display good pass defense as they will no doubt have troubles with Gopher standout Eric Decker.

Passing TDs Allowed:

Minnesota: two TDs
California: one TD

ADVANTAGE—Tie

Coaching

Minnesota Golden Gophers—Tim Brewster—Third Season (10-17)—Bowl (0-1)
California Golden Bears—Jeff Tedford—Eighth Season (59-30)—Bowl (5-1)

Coach Brewster now in his third season as coach of Minnesota has taken a team crumbling to find an identity to a team that is proving to be on the edifice of being a contender in the Big Ten.

When Glen Mason left Minnesota, the program sat on the verge of ruin as a Tim Brewster, a former tight end coach with the Denver Broncos and University of Illinois graduate, came in talking up a program with six national championships to it's name and that he vowed to get the program back to that level.

Of the game against Cal, “This is the stage that we want to be on at the University of Minnesota,” Brewster said. “We want to play in meaningful, significant games.”

Jeff Tedford, the eight-year coach of the University of California, has brought Cal out of many troubles, except after winning the conference title a couple years ago, Cal fell out and lost six of their nine games of their conference schedule.

As 2009 has opened up, the Bears are making positive ground going 2-0 and scoring at least 50 points in each game.

Cal is trying to go to 3-0 for the fifth time in Jeff Tedford’s eight years as head coach. The Bears were not 3-0 in any of the five seasons prior to Tedford’s arrival.

ADVANTAGE—California

Momentum

California Golden Bears—Two Straight 50-Point Victories at Home
Minnesota Golden Gophers—Overtime Victory, Home/Stadium Opener Victory

California was just 1-4 on the road last season and has lost eight of its past nine games on the opponent’s home field. The only road win in that span came against Washington State.

Minnesota has seized two come-from-behind victories.

Cal has yet to commit a turnover, making the Bears one of just three teams who have played two games without turning the ball over.

California leads series 3-2 (last meeting 2006, 42-17 California).

Gophers linebacker Nate Triplett, who finished Saturday’s game with 17 tackles, a fumble recovery and a touchdown, won conference and national honors for his performance. The Maple Plains, Minn., native earned the Big Ten’s co-defensive player of the week award and the Walter Camp Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week. As of the first part of the week, he was a candidate for the AT&T All-America Player of the Week.

Although much has been made of California’s failings in last season’s early game at Maryland, the Bears are actually 4-1 under Jeff Tedford in games that started before noon West Coast time.

ADVANTAGE—Tie

Overall Advantage?

With No. 8 Ranking, we'll give California the edge. However, don't be surprised if the Golden Gophers get the best of the Bears on the Saturday.

Despite Being Written Off, The Minnesota Twins Are Still In The Rearview Mirror.

Let's get the obvious and painful truths out of the way.

The Twins have been five-and-a-half games back and hovering at .500 for what seems like all season. They haven't gotten into striking distance of division-leading Detroit and probably don't deserve to be playing in October.

But one fact that many Twins analysts, fans and especially the Tigers need to fear is that they're still in it.

Detroit of all teams knows full well how it feels to lose out on the division on the final day of the season; suffering a season ending sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals in 2006; which in turn cost them the AL Central Division title.

That same year the Tigers would ride their wild card entry to a World Series loss.

The problem is the Tigers have won one of their last six and are faltering at the wrong time.

The other problem is, so are the Twins.

Chicago is continuing its dance to find sanity and would be lucky to land in second, much less take the division. The Twins however, have a powerful offense that can keep them in games unlike recent years. The problem is their pitching has been all over the map.

As of late, however, rookies like Brian Deunsing are proving their worth and that they belong in the rotation. Carl Pavano is fighting for a job and a possible playoff fight. Baker, the ace of the team, has put together 12 straight quality starts.

It would seem the inconsistencies are adding up, but let's take a look at what Minnesota has going for them with 19 games remaining in the regular season.

Here are some of the pro's and con's:

Pro — The Twins' batting in 2009 has been spectacular, led by Joe Mauer's MVP-type year, Morneau's power, Kubel's career year, and Michael Cuddyer's resurgence.

Con — The batting has cooled off the last couple weeks.

Pro — Twins' pitching is finding itself again in the beginning of September (Pavano, Baker, Duensing...).

Con — Blackburn hasn't been able to keep the ball in the park.

Pro — Detroit is faltering.

Con — So is Minnesota.

Pro — Final days of the Dome should create a buzz in the team and fan base.

Con — Means a bigger fall if the Twins can't make some sort of run.

Pro and Con — The Twins are still five-and-a-half games back.

The key will be how well Detroit plays after their last week of baseball, and whether the Twins can bring it together in one last effort for the postseason.

The Twins may not be playoff caliber, but they may find themselves there, and truly, that's all that really matters; because once you get in, anything can happen.

Breaking News: Appeals Court Rules, Williams Wall Will Stand

The Associated Press reported at 10:26 this morning central time that the Appeals Court ruled in favor of the Vikings defensive linemen, Pat and Kevin Williams (not related).

The ruling comes on account that the two Vikings violated the league's anti-doping policy.

The NFL had tried to suspend the Williamses for four games after they both tested positive for a banned diuretic during training camp in 2008.

They had taken the over-the-counter weight loss supplement StarCaps, which did not state on the label that it contained the diuretic—which can mask the presence of steroids.

Neither Williams tested positive for steroids.

Minnesota Vikings: Cut Veteran Wide Receiver Bobby Wade, Sign Greg Lewis

In a move many considered shocking, the Vikings released veteran wide receiver Bobby Wade despite reorganizing his contract last week, taking a $1.5 million cut to his contract for this year according to his agent, Jerome Stanley.

"You're defined by your behavior and what you do and not what you say," Stanley said. "I'll let you connect the dots." By the sounds of it, it was a bad falling out between the two parties.

Asked if he were referring to Vikings coach Brad Childress, Stanley said, "Wherever the decision came from. And we already know where it came from, so there it is."

The team will fill his spot by reuniting Vikings coach Childress with former Philadelphia Eagles receiver Greg Lewis, who agreed to a one-year contract today. Lewis, 29, is at Winter Park and expected to practice.

Undrafted in 2003 out of Illinois, Lewis endeared himself to Childress, then the Eagles' offensive coordinator, as well as other players and coaches with his work ethic and professionalism.

In six NFL seasons, Lewis has 23 starts, but he has 127 catches for 1,699 yards with seven touchdowns. During the offseason, the Eagles traded him to the New England Patriots for a seventh-round pick. But Lewis was one of the Patriots' last cuts, released to make room for rookie defensive back Bret Lockett.

Sidney Rice will most-likely take up Wade's role as the No. 3 receiver.

MarQueis Gray: The Golden Gophers Version Of Michael Vick

When MarQuies Gray committed to Minnesota last year, many saw him as the future of the Gophers team. The four-star prosepct (by Rivals.com) out of Indiana seemed destined to be a part of the team last year, but his campaign to join in 2008 ended prematurly due to academic issues.

Fortunately, he was able to get his academics settled out and now has begun 2009 as a freshmen. Although, unlike last year facing the likely nature of him being red-shirted, Gray is being featured as an asset that could potentially be compared to that of the Philladelphia Eagles with Donavon McNabb being played by Adam Weber and Michael Vick being played by MarQueis Gray.

Gray's 6'4", 222 pound frame makes him a threat with size alone not including his speed which is said to make him a playmaker at quarterback similar to that of Vick.

We saw a small preveiw of it this past week against Syracuse as Gray lined up as a slot receiver in a Wildcat variation.

With running back Duane Bennett trying to make a return to the offense and help boost the running-game in the newly established pro-style the Gophers have converted to, Gray could be used all over the place to help spread the offense a bit while still keeping the running game as a key facet.

With Weber only in his junior year, it's likely that Gray won't see time as the full-time starting QB for a few more years, but if he comes as advertised, Minnesota Gopher fans may have something worth cheering for in the coming years.

Minnesota Golden Gophers: Syracuse Game Recap & Five Things the Gophers Need to Address Before Their Home Opener Against Air Force

In the first game of true measure for the Golden Gophers this season, we haven't learned anything new of a critical nature about the boys in maroon and gold, however, the Gophers have much to address heading home for their inaugrial game at TCF stadium against Air Force.

This past Saturday in the season opener for the Golden Gophers, the team traveled to the Carrier Dome in New York to face the Syracuse Orange. The game was considered an interesting one since both teams had little to no chance to really scout their opponent.

With that said, the game planning became all more crucial, especially since it was the first game for new Gopher offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch and defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove.

In a game that started in bizarre fashion, it was only fitting it be decided in overtime. On Greg Paulus' first snap from center, it was launched over his head on the snap and recovered by the Gophers. Not the best way to take your first college snap.

In his first game back after tearing his ACL in the second game of the season in 2008, Duane Bennet ran his first rush of 2009 16 yards for a touchdown in the second play of the game for the Gopher offense.

Special Teams then began to make the game interesting. The Gophers then surrendered a 79-yard return to Syracuse's Michael Jones. The Gophers defense would hold tough for a three and out and force Syracuse to settle for three points.

The Gophers would then display some excellent special teams of their own with Troy Stoudermire returning the kickoff for a 54-yard return to the Syracuse 43-yard line. Eric Decker then shined a 38-yard grab setting up a seven-yard touchdown pass to sophmore Troy Stoudermire, his first as a Gopher.

As the first quarter started running down, many thought that the Gophers were on the verge of blowing the game open with the score at 14-3. However, the game would continue its bizarre course as Greg Paulus came to life and would throw a 29-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams to even up the score a bit by the end of the first quarter.

The Orange would then score on Syracuse kicker Ryan Lichtenstein's 42-yard field goal and Delone Carter's one-yard touchdown to take a 20-14 lead heading to half.

The bizarre nature of the game would only continue as both teams would fail to reach pay dirt for the rest of the game. The Gophers would then come back to tie the game with 57 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, 20-20 on Gopher kicker Eric Ellestad's 26-yard kicks (yes, two).

The game would then go to overtime where Greg Paulus would show his inexperience as the Gophers picked him off in OT to save the game for the Gophers. The offense would then drive down the field for Eric Ellestad to kick a 35-yard field goal to win it for the Gophers.

A lot can be said about the game in Syracuse... here's a few points...

-Three Keys to the Gophers' Victory Over Syracuse

*Eric Ellestad only missed one of his four kicks. Miss one more and this game never makes it to OT.

*Offense, although inconsistent at times, played ball when they needed to. Besides two sacks and one pick, Weber was solid racking up a respectable 248 yards going 19-for-42 with one touchdown to someone NOT named Eric Decker. Eric Decker was as reliable as advertised with 138 recieving yards on 9 receptions. Duane Bennet's return featured a decent 78-yard outing and a 16-yard scamper on his first run of 2009.

*3rd Down Efficiency- Syracuse: 1-for-12 Minnesota: 5-for-17
With that said, its a no brainer that Minnesota's defense was resembling last year's shutdown style, but with the two scores, one can wonder if this was just a hiccup or a warning sign.

The slideshoe that follows is a list of things to take note of heading to next Saturday...
Begin Slideshow

Dear Packer Fans, Are You Done Whining So We Can Play Football Now?

After seeing the scenario unfold in August of 2008, Brett would head over to training camp and make a public display there. Out of frustration and just being pestered, Green Bay sent Favre to the New York Jets. Green Bay’s fan base was torn by the latest development, but many would find this acceptable as he would only be remembered for what he did for the Packers.

Now we sit in August 2009 and Brett is now a member of the Minnesota Vikings. What changed? He said that nothing could take away his years in Green Bay (much like a first love). Yet, it seems many Green Bay fans are hung up on this and now are trying to justify how Brett is in the wrong.

One thing we can tell after five near-retirement attempts is that Brett loves football. That can’t be refuted in the slightest.

It also helps to point out is that once you retire, you are DONE. You can’t come back when you please, yet Brett hasn’t taken a year off in-between and technically he never filed for retirement after the 2008 season with the NFLPA. With that said, he had every right to return to football where he pleased.

So he chose to sign with the Minnesota Vikings, the Packers' long-time hated rival. Now, it seems ironic that Favre feeling left out when Rodgers was named QB, the Pack’s fan base feels as though Brett has broken a cardinal sin.

To this I have three things to say:

Green Bay fans are showing their true colors. Yes, the guy was a legend to the franchise, but this is FOOTBALL, not a storybook. If you wanted a happy ending, you should’ve stopped watching the Packers after the 1997 season.

Just the same for what the Packers did choosing Rodgers as its quarterback, Brett has become that for the Vikings. He’s a football player, not a messiah. To see him dressed in purple shouldn’t force you to burn all your Packer memorabilia and Favre jerseys. All that’s proving is that you’re whining about what you don’t have anymore. Suck it up.

Okay, assuming Brett isn’t lying (I know, that’s a stretch), but assume he isn’t. What’s wrong with coming back for the love of the game and one last shot at glory? What’s wrong with going out like Elway or Bettis? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Regardless of who he’s with, he’s playing for something big. He wants to be successful. Can anyone blame him for going out on his terms?

Understand that Brett wanted common respect for 16 great years of turning Green Bay into a household name. He wanted to be released a year ago and the Pack felt that he was a threat to them so they shipped him off to New York. After a disastrous end in 2008, what did Brett do that was so wrong? He wants to play football and legitimately, the Vikings are a contender. Favre improves the team, enough said.

This article was written on behalf of many Viking writers of B/R. Please comment below with your take on the situation… unless you’re a Packer fan that has come to whine, then please leave those comments in the trash by the curb, thank you.

Minnesota Twins: Who Was Better 2009, Joe Crede or Casey Blake ?

It was prior to the 2009 season that the Minnesota Twins faced an issue that needed to be addressed—a legitimate third basemen. The Twins have been without an offensive power at third base since Corey Koskie played for Minnesota in 2001.

To address the issue, the Twins had debated about the pickup of a free agent, which the front office in Minnesota isn't really known for. The two third basemen in question were both from the AL Central, oddly enough: former Cleveland Indian Casey Blake and Joe Crede, a former member of the Chicago White Sox.

At first, it looked as though the Twins were leaning towards the former Indian, Blake, whom had a stellar year to finish off 2008. With 81 RBI and 21 homers, Blake showed brilliance and shades of something better to come, finishing his contract with the Dodgers to end 2008 after being traded.

Crede was in the mix, but the Twins were hesitant because Crede ended his stint in Chicago with a season-ending back injury. Despite posting 17 home runs, 55 RBI, and a respectable .248 batting average at the All-Star break, he sat the rest of the season in 2007 after having a Silver Slugger year in 2006.

Eventually, Blake would resign with the Dodgers to join Joe Torre's club in Los Angelas on Feb. 21, 2009. Joe Crede signed a one-year deal reportedly worth $2.5 million with the Twins with incentives.

Now as the 2009 season nears its end, let's examine who got the better deal between Blake and Crede.

Batting Average

Casey Blake: .280
Joe Crede: .229

Crede's batting average over the course of his career has been erratic at best, and took a .050 drop since last year. Blake, however, has shown improvement here, accumulating a .029 increase from last year.

However, a key stat to be noted; Joe Crede averages .615 when starting with a 2-0 count.

Advantage: Blake

Strikeouts

Casey Blake: 98 K's
Joe Crede: 52 K's

Blake opened the season poorly in this department. Fortunately, he was able to get better as the season went on—though he still struggles at the plate when down in the count. Crede has proven to be an average hitter when it comes to two-strike situations.

Advantage: Crede

Fantasy Versatility

Casey Blake: First AND Third Base
Joe Crede: Third Base

The more versatile, the more helpful.

Advantage: Blake

Fielding—Errors/Fielding Percentage

Casey Blake: 9 / .972
Joe Crede: 4 / .983

Less mistakes = less miscues and less runs surrendered needlessly.

Advantage: Crede

Home Runs

Casey Blake: 16
Joe Crede: 15

This was one of the primary needs the Twins wanted to address with the free agent grab. Although close...

Advantage: Blake

Runs-Batted-In (RBI)

Casey Blake: 70
Joe Crede: 48

Pretty clear cut.

Advantage: Blake

Biggest Highlighted Moment of Season

Casey Blake: Home Run off top of Wall—April 15, 2009 (Gives Dodgers 2-1 lead, they would win 5-4 over the visiting San Fransisco Giants)

Joe Crede: Joe Crede's Walkoff Grand Slam in the bottom of the 13th Inning—May 13, 2009 (Twins win 14-10 in 13 innings)

Advantage: Crede

Bottom Line...

Casey Blake proved over the course of the season he's been more durable and productive then Crede. However, with how much money Blake wanted and how much the Twins got out of Crede, the Twins probably got the better deal with slightly weaker numbers in Crede (instead of paying an arm and a leg for Blake).

Comment below who you think is having the better season.

Minnesota Golden Gophers: The Big Ten's Darkhorse in 2009

After a year to forget for head coach Tim Brewster, the Golden Gophers came out in 2007 and flopped on their faces to 1-11 record in the wake of Brewsters' claimed return to the Rose Bowl and days of Minnesota being a national contender.

In 2008 however, the Gophers came out surprising with a 7-1 record to open the season. The run seemed improbable as Gopher fans began talking about a possible New Years Day Bowl or even the possibility of a BCS Bowl.

Those dreams were dashed quickly however as the Gophers would lose their next four games to finish the season 7-5 and settled for an Insight Bowl bid against the University of Kansas. Ultimately, the Gophers would lose to Kansas to finish the season on a five-game losing streak and a 7-6 record.

Players last season like Willie Van de Steeg whom have now gone will leave a big hole in a defensive line that grew accustomed to his playmaking presence. Besides Van de Steeg though, the Gophers have 17 returning starters, seven of them on defense.

Although the defense that went from deplorable in 2007 to respectable in 2008 features a more experienced group, the Gophers offense will be its key figure heading into 2009. The return of now junior quarterback, Adam Weber will bring a strong experienced veteran presence to this offense.

His 2,761 yards (2nd in Big Ten), 15 touchdowns (4th in Big Ten), and eight interceptions in 2008 made him a premier QB in the Big Ten. His highlighted feature however, was his accuracy, completing on a Big Ten best 62.2% of his passes. His playmaking ability that has been slowly growing these past couple years will surely highlight him as a leader in the Big Ten at quarterback this coming season.

A main reason for Weber's spectacular numbers was now senior, Eric Decker. In his junior season, Decker caught 84 passes (most in Big Ten) for 1,074 yards (most in Big Ten). He also led the Big Ten in touchdowns (7), yards/game (12.8) and the longest reception (75 yards). Although Decker had the option to leave as he was drafted in the MLB draft this past summer, he opted to return to the U of M and play another season.

No doubt, his playmaking ability makes him a top receiving prospect in the country and should help spread an offense known more for producing top notch running backs such as Lawrence Maroney or Marion Barber III.

It will also help the Gophers offense to get its 1st string halfback back from injury. After tearing his ACL in the fourth quarter of the team’s second game last season, running back Duane Bennett didn’t waste time feeling sorry for himself. He utilized the weight room regularly, bulking up to 206 pounds in the offseason. His now chiseled frame will help him have more power in his running and should help the Gophers to open up the passing game for Decker.

The 2008 offense however, did struggle to find weapons aside from Eric Decker. Enter wide receiver Hayo Carpenter, a junior college All-American at College of the Canyons (Calif.), who turned down numerous offers from top schools before selecting the Gophers. The 5-11, 185-pound wideout could be the yin to Decker’s yang that really increases Minnesota’s scoring output. Minnesota averaged 23.2 points per game last season, good for ninth in the league.

First-year offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch replaces last season’s spread with a pro-style offense that places an emphasis on a power running game, while utilizing multiple sets. It's no surprise that Fisch added some beef up front to help utilize the strong running game and to still make teams plan for the passing game.

The addition of Jeff Wills (6-7, 375 pounds) and Matt Carufel (6-5, 303 pounds) should help Fisch implement the running style he covets. A healthy Duane Bennett should be at the top of the depth chart once the season begins, but he’ll have a nice core of guys making him work hard for that sport in Shady Salamon, DeLeon Eskridge and Kevin Whaley.

New defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove hopes to keep things simple on defense for a unit that went from the worst total defense in the country to 80th under former defensive coordinator Ted Roof.

What the first-year man doesn’t want his defense to give up, however, is its edginess, which helped produced a league-leading 34 sacks and 31 takeaways. That has to be balanced with smart gambles, however, as Minnesota possessed last year’s second-worst passing defense in the Big Ten (240.3 yards per game).

A year ago, Minnesota’s first five opponents, none of which competed in a major conference, finished the year with a 26-24 record. This season, the Gophers face four teams from major conferences in their first four games. Those opponents finished 29-22 last season. With potential national power Cal and stubborn league foe Northwestern both meeting Minnesota early, the Gophers will need a strong start to take any momentum into the middle stretch of the season.

That’s why some Gophers supporters believe that this season’s Gophers could outperform last year’s team but still post a woeful record. The buzz couldn’t be greater with football’s return to the Minnesota campus via the new, 50,000-seat TCF Bank Stadium. The nearly $300 million open-air facility opens for business Sept. 12, when the Gophers take on Air Force.

As if ushering in the return to campus doesn’t put enough pressure on the team, Minnesota opens up TCF Bank Stadium with a tilt against an Air Force squad with a notorious run game that led the Mountain West with 266.9 rushing yards per game. The Gophers were second from the bottom in the Big Ten in total defense (383.6 yards allowed per game) but return most of last season’s defenders.

The matchup against the Falcons kicks off a four-game stretch that also includes home games against Cal and Wisconsin and a road game against Northwestern.

What to Expect of Brett Favre in One Half vs Houston Texans

Game day is marching towards us as the third week of preseason is now setting in. Brett is now also entering his second week of work with the boys in purple and all that the Viking faithful know for sure is that he's here, after a long and painful wait, he's here.

Brad Childress reported Monday, August 24 that Brett will not only start Friday in Houston against the Texans, but will play the entire first half. A move that no doubt will give Favre what he needs; time with his new teammates and game-time.

Then again, what will Brett do? What will he accomplish? And now with Bernard Berrian back in the offense, what capabilities should Favre/Childress test out on a sub-par Texan defense?

Nothing.

Brett is going to go in with only a week of work and we will see him, not as susceptible, but close to what he was against the Chiefs. He won't throw 1-for-4 for 4 yards. That much is clear.

The problem though, is being Brett Favre, I can't help but notice how everything he does is almost showing off. He gets the call from Chilly and doesn't even escape the phone call without asking to start THAT Friday...

As such, many will probably hype this up to a 150-200 yard performance with a touchdown or two and maybe a pick.

Well, the pick will probably happen either way.

Let's think logically though. With how Childress wants to use him, we can tell that his performance will likely crack three digits (or close to) but lets not give the guy that much credit. The last time we saw him on a football field (besides Friday at the Dome) he threw the worst six game stretch of his career.

Then agian, maybe he will throw up what he claims, but if I were a betting man (and I am) I wouldn't count on it.

What do you think?

A Cupcake Schedule and M&Ms: Why Minnesota's the Tasty Pick To Win the A.L. Central

Not many teams at the record of 61-63 and third place in their division can say they're "still in the hunt" in late August. The Minnesota Twins however, may have the upperhand in the arguably 2009's 'weakest division.

It is true that the Twins are below .500 and that there are several reasons for that happening. Those reasons can't be ignored heading into September and as the season winds down.

Then again, despite the fact they've been inconsistent and sometimes troubling, the Twins have many things going their way as they ride the coat tails of a series sweep in Kansas City. Lets take a look.
Begin Slideshow

Brian Duensing Has Solid Outing, Twins Defeat Royals 8-7

In only his second start for the Twins, young Brian Duensing was coming in to help a demolished starting rotation. He made the most of it by giving a solid outing the Twins desperatly needed.

Duensing pitched a strong five inning performence before exiting surrendering six hits and two earned runs. He earned three strikeouts and only one walk.

The bullpen almost gave up the 6-2 advantage the Duensing had before departing and kept it interesting. Brian Keppel and Jesse Crain gave up four runs between the two of them, after only completing an inning of work combined.

Matt Guierrier and the some original Twins baseball of singles and double saved the Twins in the end. The Twins with their 6th inning luck as of late continued as the bottom half of the lineup contributed three straight singles to rally three runs together in the top of the sixth.

A late double from Michael Cuddyer with Orlando Cabrera on third sealed it in the top of the ninth.

Michael Cuddyer became the fourth player on the Twins roster this season to eclipse the 20 home run mark along with Justin Morneau, Joe Mauer, and Jason Kubel.

Brett Favre Debuts; Tarvaris Jackson Keeps Job; Vikings Beat Chiefs

On a day that both Minnesota sports teams defeated a Kansas City sports team with the Twins defeating the Royals 5-4 in 10 innings and the Vikings denying the Chiefs victory in the final seconds 17-13; the game of least relevance seemed to be the one that drew the most attention.

Brett Favre did the unthinkable as he walked out of the tunnel at the Metrodome in purple as a Minnesota Viking. Never has a Vikings preseason game been so packed and so loud prior to kickoff. However, Favre's debut wasn't exactly eye-popping.

Brett would only play two series and go 1-for-4 for four yards and took a few shots, but overall drew the largest standing ovation ever for a Vikings quarterback in recent memory.

Despite a lackluster day, Brett made a lot of decisions that made him look like a veteran star quarterback. On top of that, his lone completed pass to Percy Harvin showed the true arm-strength of Favre and catching ability of young Harvin in double coverage.

Two-Cents on Favre's Start

If anyone was expecting 80 yard passes out of the gates, they were sadly mistaken. Favre is as nervous as the next guy playing for the team he had as a sworn enemy for 16 seasons. Lets not forget, he did just sign Tuesday.

Not to mention, who said this guy wasn't going to make good chemistry with the team? Word has it that's going with defensive end phenom Jared Allen hunting.

Percy Harvin only caught two passes for 9 yards, but nothing can be determined of his versatile value as the Vikings never did unveil Harvin passing or running the ball, however he did line up in the backfield on a couple plays.

The true gem of Friday's game against the Chiefs however was the unexpected play of Tarvaris Jackson. Word on the street is that T-Jack's job was suspect with the Vikings having four quarterbacks on the current roster. Childress has expressed the thought of keeping four and after Friday, he just might.

Jackson threw 12-for-15 for 202 yards and two touchdowns including a 64 yard strike to Darius Reynaud. A lot of rumors said that Jackson needed at least a 150 yard passing performence, at least one or two touchdown passes, and no foul ups (sacks or interceptions) which he easily was able to accomplish.

Jackson said of his performence, “Whenever you play well, you always feel good.Regardless of the situation or the circumstances, it felt good. It was a long week for me. It just shows that if you just stay focused, you’ll be fine.”

Jackson's other strike included a 13 yard throw to tight end Visanthe Shaincoe on a jump ball.

A battle that seems to be drawing interest is surrounding third year running back Albert Young and the undrafted rookie free agent out of Boise State University, Ian Johnson. Both gathered good playing time and although Young got 17 yards to Johnson's 9, the rookie also proved to be a receiving threat out of the backfield with two catches for 24 yards.

The Vikings will obviously have quite a fix with their crowd of four at quarterback and running back.

Notes:

Jared Allen (ankle), Sage Rosenfels (ankle sprain), and Bernard Berrian (hamstring) sat out of the game to rest fatigue-related injuries.

Tarvaris Jackson's Top Five Landing Spots

With Brett Favre's signing, one thing is certain, the Vikings have too many chickens in the coop. Someone's gotta go and word is that Tarvaris Jackson is the one on his way out.

With Sage just acquired and John David Booty with untapped potential, Tarvaris's chances are up and his likely place in 2009 won't be in purple.

The word is that Minnesota will entertain offers until the weekend until they consider releasing him, but will probably want something for him. A late-round 2010 draft pick seems like a likely payment for the fourth-year quarterback.

The Vikings will want to keep him out of the division, but you can't always get what you want. Here's a look at the top five teams that could give T-Jack a second chance as a backup or Wildcat quarterback.
Begin Slideshow

Brett Favre Signs With Minnesota Vikings; Storybook Season Begins

All over the NFL on Tuesday, fans, players and critics alike rejoiced over the signing of Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings...except for Green Bay Packer fans...then Tuesday was a day of mourning.

To be fair, the Favre signing has brought out three different responses, each unique and passionate in some degree. To those in Green Bay and Packers fans abroad, the signing is seen as a cardinal sin and now has Packer fans ripping the cheese from their brains in disgust.

Another is the response of Minnesota Vikings fans that praise the fact that the quarterback leading them is not a no-namer, but most likely the most famous quarterback to ever play the game.

Then there's everone else, that are caught to the point of being overjoyed that that madness has ended (or that it now will be a feature every week of the regular season).

The Vikings now enter the 2009 season with a little more confidence in what they now have with their offense. Favre will only be a larger asset to Adrian Peterson and Berrian and will only now have an even stronger arm to stretch the field with. The defense is...well the Vikings defense, a top-five defense and No. 1 against the run.

The biggest thing this season will be the fact that the Vikings needed one piece to their puzzle and Favre will be that piece.

With a storybook like setup, the Vikings are set to claim the prize that has eluded them for almost fifty years. With the Pro-Bowl running back hailed as purple Jesus to the most dangerous defensive line in football, the Vikings suddenly have a staggering team.

Favre has also been (although not open about it) wanting a fitting ending to a legacy that he rightfully claims as his own.

With that said, the NFL no longer has a standing quarterback issue in the making. Michael Vick is an Eagle and now Favre, a Viking. The offseason/preseason is now back in the hands of the NFL, and all is at peace.

What lies ahead can only be described as risky, but who would blame Minnesota? They've been living in four empty years since Culpepper was quarterback for the purple.

The Vikings team has an essence if you will, of storybook or comicbook like roster. It's well known that a lot of the veterans such as Pat Williams, Antoine Winfield and Visanthe Shiancoe were spit out by their former team and have made a name for themselves in Minnesota and made the Vikings a 'team of the misfit players.'

On top of that, many of the key players on the team carry a name/persona/alias about them. On the defense, Pat and Kevin Williams resemble the wall, Antoine Winfield is the short guy with big hit (which we all saw in his first ever Pro-Bowl season last year) and Jared Allen is the beast (no explaination needed).

On the offense, Steve Hutchinson has taken over the role leader after the departure of Pro-Bowl center Matt Birk. Rookie Percy Harvin was dangerous in college, however it is not known how well his skills will translate yet.

At the No. 1 receiver position, Bernard Berrian is the ever-dangerous deep threat. Peterson is rightfully becoming one of the most productive running backs in the league and is quickly making a name for himself as "the chosen one." Brett Favre could very well be the role of the redeemer.

Favre's very goal is to go out with a bang and who could blame him? Doesn't everyone want to leave on a good note?

With that said, the Vikings schedule is not only an easy one in 2009, but carries significance each step of the way. In week one, the Vikings face Favre's former coach, Eric Mangini and the helpless Cleveland Browns.

Of course, the Vikings face Brett's former team the Green Bay Packers twice, on Oct. 5 in Minneapolis on Monday Night Football and again Nov. 1 in Lambeau. Both games carry emotion for Favre, especailly his homecoming game in Novemer.

The Vikings then face the New York Giants in Week 17 (again), the team that defeated Favre in the NFC title game in 2007, Favre's last game as a Packer.

It is Favre's legacy on the line, it is the Vikings Super Bowl hopes and dreams (not to mention Childress' job), but is it written that Favre will lead this team to the promised land?

Time will tell...

Minnesota Twins: Although Bleak, The Twins Playoff Hopes Are Very Real

After 119 games this season, the Twins are sitting at an uncomfortable 57-62. Then again, when you're only six and half games out, a month and a half seems doable with a team at it's best.

But to be honest, the Twins are not at their best. Three of the original five the Twins started the season with in their rotation are on the DL, possibly the best of the three for the season. On top of that, they have had to go to a four-man rotation with a bullpen guy making starts as needed.

Speaking of the pen, they have struggled this season, most notably in the last month. Even Nathan isn't having a great August so far, although his 20 saves are respectable.

Then again, the Twins do have a shot like every other team. To count them out only six and half out and a month and a half away from the postseason would be premature.

Offensively, the Twins are an entirely different team than they were last year. The Twins bats are uncharacteristicly strong this year. The Twins currently have three players that have eclipsed the 20 home run mark in Joe Mauer (25), Justin Morneau (28) and Jason Kubel (20), With two others in the hunt in Michael Cuddyer (19) and Joe Crede(15), a feat that is remarkable for any Major League ball club.

Joe Mauer's batting average is surreal to say the very least and is sitting at .383 after dipping to .351 briefly. His over .500 play over the last 12 games has made him a force to be feared. The goal of .400 is no longer a dream, but a reality that could come full circle if Mauer consistently pushes a .500 batting average the rest of the way.

On top of that, Morneau currently leads the American League with 94 RBI's and is tied for third in home runs in the American League with 28.

With over a month and a half remaining in the season, Mauer and Morneau should easily eclipsed 30 home run mark. Mauer still has a real chance of being named American League MVP. The problem with this however, is that the Twins may not be enough of a contender for the voters to consider Mauer.

There is one way the Twins can salvage the season and make a play for a weak AL Central division crown and potentially a playoff birth. They need help from the minor leagues. Unheard of players that can come in and have something that no major league team have really scouted. As such teams will get stuck 'feeling out' players and will have to taste the lightning before they can dodge it.

It's how Nick Blackburn, Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey and Glen Perkins have made their mark. They came in at a mid-point in the season from a part of the Twins organization they havn't seen and they made their mark as young pitchers and kept Minnesota in the hunt last season.

The Twins will need something similar from either within or a free agent signing if they hope to recharge the pitching on the team. In that regard, the front office may hold the keys to the Twins chance at making the 2009 season into something, but until then, manager Ron Gardenhire will have to scrap a rotation and bullpen together from bits and pieces that he has in the organization.

One thing is certain. Only 43 games remain in a certainly salvageable season, but who will step up and propel them over the top.

Brett Favre Could Be Part of the Minnesota Vikings Afterall

It's not over yet.

Jay Glazer of Foxsports.com reported at 1:17 PM, that word around camp is that Favre isn't out of the equation yet...at least, according to almost everyone that's a member of the Vikings organization.

Glazer goes on to admit the fact that his visit took place before the Vikings solid preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts, 13-3. Of course, Sage Rosenfels led the Vikings with his 10 of 13, 91 yard performance against the Colts and showed to have the slight nod ahead of Tarvaris Jackson in the QB battle already underway.

Despite the lone preseason victory, this story still has legitimacy and potential for the four keys that Glazer spells out quite well.

First and for-most, the Vikings have already got Brett on board as far as contract issues are concerned. Contract terms were agreed upon almost two months ago with money not really an issue.

Secondly, Favre hasn't shut the door and has always left a an "out-line" when making public decisions. He said at the end of last season that he was going to retire, but desired a release. Why? He then blames a partially torn tendon in his arm for his past season's shortcomings. He then starts talking to the Vikings staff medically. Once again, why?

Favre then goes on to have the surgery done to completely tear the tendon and allow it to heal. Why? He starts practicing and working out at Hattiesburg High School...okay, it's officially beyond needing an explanation why.

He then tells Minnesota, no, but not before he says, "If someone calls me in November, you never know..." WHY?

It seems obvious looking at the series of events that Favre has an agenda that he is fully aware and contentious of his choices.

Thirdly, Favre and the Vikings have no better option, but each other.

"Neither Sage Rosenfels nor Tarvaris Jackson has done anything to make the Vikings feel either is the answer at quarterback. Jackson had been hurt this summer, but even when healthy he and Rosenfels have actually been outplayed during training camp by third-stringer John David Booty," reported Glazer.

The receivers are doing great according to reports from camp and the coaches. With that said, who is left on the Vikings roster at quarterback? Not to mention, which other quarterback deprived team is going to give Favre the best chance to win big?

Lastly, Favre hates going to camp. This issue has been no secret.

Brett, at his age would be drained by the concept of playing out training camp and the grind of a 16 game season. To say that Favre is now open to coming back now that training camp is done can't be overlooked.

The only question remains, if he does ask to come back, how will the Vikings coaching staff and ownership respond? They may feel spurned by what Favre did to disappoint them, but could they really pass that up for the alternative?

Minnesota Vikings: Five Vikings On The Bubble in 2009

Both of these struggling quarterbacks are fighting for their NFL careers. Both have proven that they have the tools, but have also proven they lack the know-how to lead an offense with consistency.

Tarvaris Jackson is the incumbent of the position, but due to inconsistent and questionable play-calling that he may not be in a position to stay in consideration for much longer.

With now three seasons under his belt, he's gotten more then enough playing experience to be able to prove himself. With that aside, he has shown improvement, but is his ceiling coming soon, or has he already met it?

His completion percentage is a solid 58% in those three seasons with 20 touchdowns. However, his 137.7 yards a game is nothing short of disappointing. His discomfort in the pocket is highly documented along with his 41 sacks in his career which has led him to his 18 interceptions and his 13 fumbles (7 fumbles lost).

Sage however isn't just playing for a starting job. After his eight years of being a backup in the NFL (four in Miami, three in Houston) Sage hasn't been able to prove himself as viable quarterback since being drafted as the fourth-round pick by Redskins in 2001.

Rosenfels has shown shades of brilliance, yet he still is blemished by games of selfish play-calling that is considered overly-aggressive in games that rightfully should be "babied" until the end. (i.e. 2007 season, Houston vs Baltimore with 4 touchdowns, 3 interceptions. Lost 38-36 despite having the lead for 80% of the game).

This year may prove to be Rosenfels last unless he can prove his legitimacy as a quarterback in the NFL as a starter.

His statistics are decent at best with 62.5% completion percentage throughout his career, and averaging 187.1 yards a game in 2007 and 238.5 in 2008. However his 22 interceptions between the two seasons overshadows his 21 touchdowns and 65% completion percentage.

With both QB's fighting for their careers, it's likely that one of them will fall and may never again have a chance to start in the NFL. Then again, stranger things have happened.
Begin Slideshow

Minnesota Vikings—Indiannapolis Colts: Advantage Sage Rosenfels

If the supposed battle for the starting job for the Vikings was a close call, it's not anymore. The Vikings had a showdown with the AFC powerhouse Colts on Friday in their first preseason game of the year.

Sage began the game on a 72-yard drive that ended in Chester Taylor's 5-yard gallop for a touchdown. Sage went 5-for-5 for 42 yards and even added a 5-yard run into it.

Sage would only play the two opening series for the Vikings, both of which ended in points. Rosenfels ended the night 10-for-13 for 91 yards, having completed 76.9 percent of his passes, and not giving up one pick.

Tarvaris Jackson, however, only completed 7 of his 15 passes for a mere 39-yards and despite three rushing attempts, finished with no yardage.

Although neither were sacked, it should be pointed out that neither player got significant time in. This game will only prove to be one small piece of the overall competition.

Jared Allen, Fred Evans, and Ray Edwards also opened their first defensive series on Peyton Manning with three sacks.

Minnesota Vikings: 2010 Draft—Franchise Quarterback

The Minnesota Vikings have yet to take a snap into the 2009 season, but it's quite clear that many have written off success in their 2009 season based on the quarterback situation between veteran career backup Sage Rosenfels and incumbent Tarvaris Jackson.

However, the Vikings may only be a contender for a few of the following years, and will need to fill their biggest position if they ever hope to achieve the Super Bowl title that has eluded them.

Tarvaris Jackson is progressing, but unless he becomes the quarterback of the future over night, T-Jack will be testing free agency next year, as his current contract expires after 2009.

Sage Rosenfels, acquired from the Houston Texans for the Vikings 2009 fourth-round draft pick, has been given the nod from most critics concerning the current quarterback situation. The problem, though, will be once 2009 is done.

Let's say the Vikings fall short again and get stranded in wild card or divisional round of the playoffs, and find themselves in the same spot they did after the 2008 season. What then? Chances are, with that said, Brad Childress will find himself out of a job.

After a change in coaching, what next? Try their hand at grabbing old hall of fame quarterbacks like Brett Favre again, and try to put a band-aid on an issue that's equivalent to a broken arm?

The Vikings have needed a long-term quarterback since the Culpepper era. This much is certain. The Vikings have their best legitimate chance in 2010 draft.

Now, the Vikings aren't going to flop with a 4-12 record. They will definitely be a contender in a competitive NFC North. Over .500 is almost a gimmie.

On that note, they will most likely be in the bottom half of the first round in the draft, most likely around the 22nd or later.

At that point in the draft, the Vikings have few options at quarterback. The 2010 draft does feature the likelyhood of three top-notch quarterbacks ready to possibly come in and start. All three of the said quarterbacks were Heisman finalists, but will likely go in the first five picks.

The three quarterbacks in question are Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), Colt McCoy (Texas), and Tim Tebow (Florida).

Sam Bradford is the 2008 Heismen trophy winner and current senior at University of Oklahoma. Coming from a pro-style offense in Oklahoma, his stock places him squarely in position to be the top quarterback, if not the top pick, of the 2010 draft. There is no question that Bradford will be an immediate starter in the NFL.

Colt McCoy is a 2008 Heisman finalist, and currently a junior and starting quarterback at the University of Texas in a highly competitive Big 12 conference.

Colt also has the benefit of coming from a pro-style offense, but has unfortunately a blemish from his freshmen year of throwing the ball up for grabs a lot, but seemed to tame his throw in the 2008 year as a sophomore.

He should go as a top 10 pick—maybe 15—but his pro-style will make him highly coveted to middle-round teams.

That leaves us with Tim Tebow—2007 Heisman winner, 2008 Heisman finalist, team leader of two straight national championships, and incoming senior to the University of Florida.

Tebow's currently holds many of college football's passing and quarterback rushing records, making him an interesting duel-threat quarterback.

The problem is that in the NFL he wouldn't fit into the schemes of pro football, and likely would be grabbed early because of his passing records and ability to play in the clutch.

However, the University of Florida is trying to incorporate pro-style plays into it's playbook this upcoming season, which should only help Tebow's positioning.

The Vikings could probably take a swipe at Tebow, and he'll probably fall to that 20th pick plateau...but will be risky pick. His questionable arm strength will not keep defenses from stacking the box on Adrian Peterson.

On that note, Tebow's dual-threat ability would make a dangerous combo with Adrian Peterson, and would prove a good combo with former teammate Percy Harvin—who he has great chemistry with.

To grab Bradford would be a miracle, but he is the best option for an immediate impact. The Vikings would have to trade multiple draft picks, a playmaker, or both to get him.

None seem like good ideas with how talented the 2010 draft is shaping to be overall. However, the Vikings will be in the best condition they've been in for years, which would make it the best time to trade up.

McCoy would be the happy medium for the Vikings. Drafting him wouldn't require an arm or a leg, and they would be getting a fine quarterback in return.

McCoy's freshmen year looks daring, but it could be nothing but a fluke if he comes out and performs well in 2009.

On top of that, McCoy is also known for having decent speed, and could be nice cross between Tebow and Bradford. The problem is that McCoy has no hardware (awards).

Of course, Sage Rosenfels could prove to be the quarterback of the future for the Vikings and lead them to a playoff berth and the franchise's first Super Bowl.

Or Tarvaris Jackson could finally be the quarterback he was meant to be...

Then again, the Vikings better be planning, just in case...
