Steelers Return 20 Starters, But Depth Is a Concern

It has finally arrived. The maddeningly meaningless pre-season has come to an end, and we are about 24 hours from the opening kick-off. Although Santa Claus would be sure to argue, this is the most wonderful time of the year.

Coming off of their second Super Bowl win in four years, the Pittsburgh Steelers are returning all but two starters.

Starting cornerback Bryant McFadden left for the desert of Arizona while starting inside linebacker Larry Foote asked for and received his release. The loss of McFadden was no surprise since the Steelers felt that William Gay was ready to step in and take over the position opposite Ike Taylor.

The departure of Larry Foote could prove to be a bit more damaging. The writing was on the wall, as third-year player and former first-round draft choice, Lawrence Timmons had been eating into his playing time.

Foote decided the time was right to go home to Michigan and help the Lions win a game. I wish nothing but the best for a solid human being. I never get tired of that story.

The Steelers have proven time and again that if they feel that they have a competent replacement, they will let the free agent walk. It's been a recipe that has been difficult to argue with.

The more troublesome aspect of the 2009 team for me is the lack of depth: most notably on the offensive line and at linebacker.

The offensive line is returning four starters. All but RG Darnell Stapleton, placed on injured reserve, return to bring some continuity to this much maligned group. Former backup Trai Essex steps in to take over those duties.

However, none of the current backups have NFL game experience. Do the names Tony Hills (second season), Doug Legursky (second season), Kraig Urbik (rookie), and Ramon Foster (rookie) ring a bell? I didn't think so.

Just one injury to this group could prove damaging to the potential success of the team, not to mention fatal to Ben Roethlisberger.

The linebacking crew continues to be a team strength, and must be considered one of the top groups in the NFL.

The departure of the aforementioned Larry Foote opened the door for the more dynamic former first round pick, Lawrence Timmons. However, it greatly diminished the depth. Timmons is going to miss the opener with a high ankle sprain.

Stepping in for Timmons will be special teams dynamo Keyaron Fox. While competent, he leaves much to be desired when it comes to starting material.

The remaining backups at linebacker include Andre Frazier, Arnold Harrison, and Patrick Bailey. While all are very good special teams players, none will bring much to the table if called upon for extended playing time.

The failure of last years third-round draft choice, Bruce Davis, can't be ignored. Failing with a third-round pick is costly.

In today's NFL, it is nearly impossible not to have holes in your team. In fact, many coaches would take these weaknesses in a heartbeat. But true Steelers fans begin worrying right after the end of the previous season. I know I did.

The Steelers open this season as one of the favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. As is almost always the case, remaining relatively healthy, and having competent backup play, will determine just how far they can go on their road to a repeat.

Mr. Chairman: Performance-Enhancing Drugs Are Here To Stay

Society loves a good train wreck. We aren’t happy unless someone, anyone, is miserable. I guess that the old saying, "misery loves company," is completely accurate. It appears that in the world of sports, we all need heroes and we all need the obligatory whipping boy.

I have been sitting back and watching the A-Rod furor play itself out for everyone to see. I am going to lay out a slightly different, if not controversial viewpoint. Before I begin let’s get one thing straight. I don’t particularly care for Alex Rodriguez. I never did. I have marveled at his play, but never once did I actually enjoy watching him.

I am a Yankees fan. But I nearly vomited in my mouth when the Yankees re-signed him. I was hopeful that he was gone for good. I simply hate distractions. I like the sport, period. I don’t like shenanigans or the “look at me” attitude.

But to sit back and admonish Alex Rodriguez for all that is wrong in baseball is absolutely absurd! The performance enhancing drug problem dates back over 20 years in baseball.

Let me put this in perspective. I entered High School in 1985. I was told by our coach, who was quite well respected in the baseball community, that I should not lift weights. Lifting weights is not good for baseball players.

By 1988, “The Bash Brothers” entered the scene. You remember them, Dave Henderson, Mark McGwire, and Jose Canseco. They were mean, they were nasty, and they could hit the ball a mile. I wore an A’s hat to practice one day. The quote from the coach was, “So now you like Jose Can-Steroid, huh?” What an eye opener.

In 1994 Major League Baseball came to a screeching halt due to a work stoppage. No World Series! Dire times indeed. When they returned, attendance was way down. But steroid usage was way up.

Cal Ripken was chasing his record for consecutive games played.

In 1998, McGwire and Sammy Sosa were racing towards breaking the single season home run record. Power hitters were popping up all over the place. Home runs were flying! Attendance was up again. Everyone loved baseball. Who remembers the commercial, “Chicks dig the long ball”? MLB was thriving! It was the “juiced ball” era.

It should have been called the juiced player era.

Indulge me for a second. Brady Anderson played for 16 years. He hit 210 career home runs. 50 of those were in 1996.

Sammy Sosa hit more than 40 home runs once before the age of 30. After age 30, he hit 401 of his 609 career home runs. That is 66 percent of his home runs AFTER the age of 30.

And Barry Bonds? If there was ever a fraud it is him.

I am leaving a bunch of names out of this article, simply because you already know the names. But my point is this, how did anyone not see this? Did everyone have their heads in the sand?

Did the sportswriters really not know what was going on? How about the owners, the players, the “commissioner”? Nobody knew what was happening?

Bologna! They knew. These players, and the game of baseball, are getting exactly what they deserve. The players would never rat each other out. There is a “brotherhood” and I get it.

It doesn’t behoove the owners to rat out their own players. They want to win; at least most organizations want to win.

And Major League Baseball needed the power numbers. It brought back the interest, and the fans. Performance enhancing drugs were good for business baby.

Then the negative publicity started and Bud Selig, the “commissioner”, caved. He is appalled. Alex Rodriguez shamed the game? Seriously? Shamed the game? Bud Selig is as much to blame but he isn’t man enough to admit it.

Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire are all gone from the game. Gary Sheffield and Jason Giambi have become largely irrelevant. We need a whipping boy.

Somehow, the tests results that were supposed to be confidential were leaked. My friends, I give you A-Rod. The new poster child for all that is wrong with the sport that is supposed to be good and pure.

Yet there is still no real testing for HGH. Players are failing the “idiot test” and nobody cares about them. J.C. Romero, anyone? Right, he didn’t know. Andy Pettitte only used them to get healthy. And Roger Clemens only used it to get strong.

Players in the NFL regularly test positive. Shawn Merriman. Rodney Harrison. Nobody cares. But for some reason, we are all appalled that baseball players actually used performance enhancing drugs.

PED’s have become as much of a part of the game as the double play. We had better get used to it. It’s human nature to look for an edge. No matter what you do, most people will look for an edge. Until there is a fool proof way to test for these drugs, they will permeate the game.

That begs the question, should we really care if players are using these drugs? Are professional sports chasing their tails? They can’t really be caught. It can’t really be stopped. At least not from what I can see.

And as for the role model argument, I don’t even want to listen to that anymore. Parents need to guide their children. These guys play a game. They are not role models. If your kids want to look up to them, guide them in the proper way. Let them try to play like they do, but teach them the right way to do things. Teach them how to lead a good life. Be their role model. Earn it.

The sportswriters need to come to grips with the fact that we will never know the full truth. You can’t ignore the players implicated and leave them out of the Hall of Fame. There is no way to determine who is guilty and who is innocent. Unless you want to remove ALL of the players who played in the era from the ballot then just stop it. You don’t know. Period.

And the players need to stop crying that they didn’t take them and are being unfairly implicated. If they really cared that much they would have put a stop to it long before it got to this point. Peer pressure is the best way to stop these things.

Jose Canseco and Ken Caminiti appear to be the only players to have told the truth. I believe they estimated that about 80 percent used. Unfortunately everyone scoffs at Jose, for obvious reasons. And Ken Caminiti is dead. It’s a shame.

Before I quit this rant, let’s all ask ourselves one question. If you could take something, to help ensure that you kept your job, and excelled at your job, would you take it? Think about it for a minute. In today’s economy, would you do it?

Perhaps we all need to “take off our white wigs and stop judging everyone”? It’s just a thought. If you have a moment, check out this documentary. It might change your viewpoint.

I have sworn to myself that this article is the last time I discuss the topic. I hope I can stick to it.

Pittsburgh Steelers Roll, But Can Mike Tomlin Keep Them Rolling?

I was expecting the Steelers to beat the Chargers. I did not expect to see a complete domination in the second half.

I expected the game to be close, and I fully expected to write an article blasting the below-average offensive line play. Perhaps discussing Ben Roethlisberger's decision making? Perhaps Willie Parker being indecisive or slow? Wrong again.

I sat in front of the television and watched an offensive line completely control the line of scrimmage. I watched Ben look very sharp, and his arm had more life than I had seen in a while. And Willie Parker looked fabulous. He looked fast for the first time since Week Two. He was cutting, accelerating, and making quick reads.

These are all terrific signs for the Steelers.

My only complaint, and yes there must be at least one, was some questionable decision making by Mike Tomlin. Perhaps I am splitting hairs, worrying about minutiae, or just being a typical Steelers malcontent.

Decision No. 1 - The fake punt. With 5:11 left in the second quarter and the game tied at 7-7, the Steelers were stopped at their own 48-yard line. They lined up as if to punt, direct snapped the ball to Ryan Clark who was stopped immediately.

At this point in the game, there was no reason to try a fake punt. Fake punts are for desperate teams. There was no need to be desperate. Pin them deep and play for field position. Mike Tomlin handed them three points.

Decision No. 2 - Goal line decision. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Steelers were 4th-and-goal at the Chargers goal line. They were winning 21-10 and had just pushed the ball down after recovering a muffed punt. A field goal puts them up by two touchdowns, and yes, a TD probably ices the game. I understand being aggressive and going for the throat, but they have struggled in short yardage all year and to not get any points could have been a killer.

Decision No. 3 - Goal line play call. More surprising than going for it was the play call. The call was a quick hand off to the fullback out of the I-Formation, Carey Davis. Carey Davis barely touches the ball and when he does, the results are usually less than stellar. He bobbled the hand off and was stopped dead in his tracks. Gary Russell is the designated short yardage back. Willie Parker was dominating the game. Heath Miller and Hines Ward barely, if ever, drop passes. I can think of more than a few plays to call over a Carey Davis dive.

I really like Mike Tomlin as a head coach, and these decisions ended up meaning nothing. But if you make the same mistakes against a much better Ravens team, they will probably make the Steelers pay for it with no trip to Tampa.

This game is going to be a brawl. If you saw the first two match ups you know exactly what to expect. Whichever team imposes its will and makes the fewest mistakes will end up victorious.

Mike Tomlin needs to be a bit more pragmatic. Like Bill Cowher used to say, sometimes a punt is your best option. No shame in that when you have a dominant defense.

It will be interesting to see a second-year coach and a rookie coach go head to head in the AFC Championship.

Buckle up.

Ben Roethlisberger Is Healthy...Or Is He?

Ben Roethlisberger has been cleared to play in Sunday's playoff game vs. the Chargers. According to Mike Tomlin, Roethlisberger was given a clean bill of health after passing the full battery of tests.

I don't doubt Mike Tomlin. In fact, the Steelers along with Dr. Joseph Maroon operate some of the most comprehensive post-concussion analysis in the NFL. I am sure Ben is clinically fine.

The question on everyone's mind is, "Is he ready to play?" According to today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ben is still having headaches and it hurts him to put on his helmet because it is "too tight." That is a concern.

Up until that quote, I had been dismissing the injury as a mild concussion that shouldn't create much of an issue. Two weeks off should be fine. Players often suffer a concussion and return the next week. But Ben doesn't have that history.

There are two major concerns for me.

The first is his health. If he gets bounced around a few times, and history has shown us he will, how will his body react? Will there be long-term effects? Will he become gun shy? Will his decision making be solid?

The second concern revolves around the team. I think the Steelers are very strong and are legitimate Super Bowl contenders. I also think that this season has parity like no other. I could see five or six different teams winning the Super Bowl. I can't say that about other seasons.

I firmly believe that the Steelers can win on Sunday without Roethlisberger. There defense has carried them through this season. I think Byron Leftwich is more than capable of getting them through one game. That isn't meant to discount the Chargers, they could easily remain hot.

The concern I have is that Ben is going to start. And rightfully so, he should start. The problem is that the Steelers can't overcome a poor, mistake filled first half. If they have to go to Leftwich after a few key mistakes they will be in serious trouble.

Going to Leftwich would mean they were down a few touchdowns, unless of course he is injured and then my point is moot.

Going into the half with a deficit greater than 10 points would not bode well.

Perhaps I am just being a typical Steelers fan. We are the "Chicken Little's" of the sports world. But it is enough to cause Steelers fans some concern.

I will feel much better after that first successful drive.

A Pittsburgh Steelers Fan Gives Thanks

On this day, I think it's important that we take some time to reflect on what's good in our world.

The world has a way of making us feel down, unhappy, and lately we have all felt miserable about something. An ongoing war, economic crisis, falling home prices, an uneasy stock market, the list goes on and on.

For one day, perhaps we can all focus on what's good. That which makes us happy, and what makes us forget about the everyday drag.

For me, that outlet has always been sports. So enough of the dreary outlook, let me give thanks.

I am thankful for:

The Tasmanian Devil, Troy Polamalu. I remember what it was like without you last year. Thank you for being healthy!

The splenectomy. Thanks to the Doctors who were able to perform this procedure on Ryan Clark. Now I don't have to see Anthony Smith and Tyrone Carter blowing coverages.

Ike Taylor. You have been the biggest bright spot of the depleted corners. After being banished under the Cowher regime, you have taken this second chance and flourished.

Silverback Security Squad. James, one of your teammates said that "you are so mean that you don't even like yourself." That's okay, James, we all like you.

Larry Foote. For being a real man. This story always touches me. And this one. You are a true man, and you should get more publicity then some of the "boys" in professional sports.

Potsy - Mr. Farrior, you are a stud and a superior team leader.

Lamarr Woodley - For providing the best sack tandem we have seen in Pittsburgh since Lloyd/Greene.

Aaron Smith - You are the most underrated defensive lineman in the sport, bar none.

Big Snack - Thank you for not coming to my house on Thanksgiving.

Hines Ward - For being the beacon of stability throughout your entire career. You are an elite receiver.

Justin Hartwig - For being the only stable force on our offensive line. And it is offensive. Attention Mr. Colbert: Get him a contract extension.

Mewelde Moore - Where the heck would we be without you?

Big Ben - For surviving an assault that can only be compared to "The Mother of All Battles."

And finally, to Zander and the crew for giving me a venue to opine.

Finish strong, men. This fan is enjoying the ride, and is thankful. See you in Pittsburgh on Dec. 7. And if I can ask for one more thing, please beat the Cowboys!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Shut Up And Play: Anthony Smith Does It Again

Anthony Smith has to be one of the dumbest players I have seen. Last season, before the game versus the undefeated Patriots, Anthony Smith decided to guarantee a win. The Pats obviously used the statement as bulletin-board material, and he was later torched for two long touchdown passes. He never started again.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today that Anthony Smith has done it again.

His quote:

"If they ask me again, I'll say the same thing," he told the Indiana Gazette after the game Thursday night.

"We're the No. 1 defense. If we play like we've been playing, and our offense comes around and has a good game, and we're clicking on all cylinders, we're going to win the game."

Can someone please tell this fool to shut up? He is a backup safety, with tons of potential yet very little production. He has barely contributed to the defense and thus, has NO business running his mouth. Six tackles this season, six tackles!

Trash talking in the media brings no benefit. There is no reason to get the opposition fired up more than they already are. Especially a proud and successful franchise like the Pats. They will use it to their advantage.

Give it a rest, Anthony.

NFL: Update of the Walking Wounded

Willie Parker is questionable for Sunday's game vs. the Patriots with swelling in his previously injured knee. Mewelede Moore will once again spell Parker if needed.

Starting DE Brett Keisel will be out with a sprained MCL in his left knee. He could miss a few weeks.

CB Deshea Townsend is also out with a strained hamstring.

CB Bryant McFadden is listed as questionable. He has not played in one month due to a broken forearm. A McFadden return would go a long way in containing the Patriots passing attack.

LT Marvel Smith will also miss Sunday's game. As previously stated, I don't expect to see him in a Steelers uniform again.

The Steelers really need to begin STAYING healthy if they are going to survive this daunting four game stretch which includes the Patriots, Cowboys, Titans, and Ravens.

The NFL Is Beginning To Get It Wrong

There is nothing like the National Football League. When July nears, the excitement that I feel for training camp is like that felt by a kid entering a candy store. When September comes, I jump up and down with excitement and anticipation. And when February comes, I mope around the house, wondering what to do with myself.

It's the only sport where the amateur draft necessitates two full days of non-stop coverage.

The NFL has gotten it right for so long. It's been nearly a perfect league. Parity has much to do with the success. The salary cap has made it possible for every team to compete for a title. Except, of course, for the Lions. They are the hot mess of the NFL.

With all that is good in this world, I fear that the league is taking a dangerous turn under the new commissioner, Roger Goodell.

The collective bargaining agreement, or CBA, is set to expire in 2011. This seems far away to most of us. But it is important to realize that if a new agreement is not in place by the end of the 2009 season, the 2010 season will be "un-capped."

Can any of you imagine an NFL with no salary cap? How many of the teams would be able to compete? If any of you were wondering how the Cowboys were able to sign Roy Williams, or the rest of their high-priced free agents, it was by deferring money to that season and beyond. Most parties involved seem to think that it will happen.

Remember how bad baseball had become because of the disparity in team finances? Would the Steelers go the way of the Pirates? I don't want to find out. There aren't too many "large market" NFL franchises.

How about this mess called the NFL Network? This has become absolutely ridiculous. It was started by the NFL as a way to showcase the sport, and a place to feature games for all of the nation to see.

It hasn't worked out that way. The majority of the nation does not have the channel. Ongoing disputes with the major cable companies have prevented that. For those of us that live in the New York area, remember the Yes Network's feud with Cablevision? We lost nearly all of a Yankees season.

The cable companies want access to the NFL Sunday Ticket. They want to be able to sell it to their client base. I can't blame them, but both sides are stubborn, and the NFL has a contract with DIRECTV. It's beginning to alienate a very loyal fan base.

These are two very important issues that don't seem to be getting much attention. Roger Goodell has instead, decided to focus on fining every player that tackles someone. He has the referees throwing penalty flags for breathing heavy around a quarterback.

He has become quite the policeman, handing out fines and suspensions for "conduct unbecoming of an NFL player." And I agree with the approach. There needs to be accountability. It had become embarrassing at times.

But what about Adam Jones? Why, after all of his transgressions, has he been reinstated once again? I thought this was a zero-tolerance policy? It apparently doesn't pertain to Adam Jones.

Roger Goodell needs to get the house in order. I have officially launched my plea.

Steelers-Bengals: Pittsburgh Bests Bengals

The Steelers beat the Bengals last night at a snowy Heinz Field, 27-10.

The Bengals took an early 7-0 lead into the second quarter but they were quickly derailed. Coach Mike Tomlin admitted as much by saying that both sides of the ball stumbled out of the gate. It could almost be expected with such a short week of preparation.

The Steelers did not come out of the game unscathed on the injury front. Santonio Holmes was knocked out of the game with a concussion. He is expected to be back to normal quickly and not miss any time.

Brett Keisel left the game with a sprained right knee. No word on the severity but losing any of our D-line starters would be a blow. Willie Parker also left the game after "tweaking" the same knee that has bothered him for most of the season. Hopefully Willie gets right soon. The Steelers are much better with him in the lineup.

And Ben Roethlisberger finally figured out that he can still run! Very good scrambles, even one for a touchdown. Nice to see it, and please don't be afraid to do it more.

There were a few dark spots other than the slow start:

1.) Paul Ernster- Simply put, he is just awful. Five punts: 23, 24, 28, 33, and 34 yards. An average of 28.4. Each of those punts went out of bounds. Unacceptable and it will prevent the Steelers from winning games against good clubs. They can't afford to give away 15-20 yards in field position. I wonder if Mitch Berger has healed?

2.) The receivers dropped quite a few key balls. Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Nate Washington, Limas Sweed, and Mewelde Moore all dropped catchable balls, and each was key in keeping drives alive. If those balls were caught, Ben's numbers would have looked outstanding.

3.) Limas Sweed touched a punt after Santonio Holmes waived everyone off. And it cost the Steelers the ball. Again, there was no harm, but against good teams we would have paid the price. Can't give the ball to a good offense at your 35 and expect to come away unscathed.

More as the week progresses.

Pittsburgh Steelers' "D" Dominates 'Skins, But Are They Among the NFL's Elite?

On this election evening, it's important to realize what an effect the media can have. Leading up to the election, it's an Obama landslide. Watching live, it looks like anyone's game. But I digress.

Turn the clock back 24 hours. If you watched the pregame hoopla, if you listened to "The Three Amigos" in the booth, you would have thought the Redskins were unbeatable and the Steelers were at the brink of disaster.

The Steelers opened the game with a failed and ill-advised onside kick. Mike Tomlin defended the move by saying he wanted to turn up the heat immediately. What it did was give the Redskins a field goal after a three-and-out.

On the next series, Cornelius Griffin deflected a Ben Roethlisberger pass and it was intercepted. Three plays amounted to another Redskins field goal. That was it. Cue the band.

Make no mistake about it, the Steelers' offense was inept in the first half. If not for a late blocked punt, this would have been a 6-3 deficit going into the half. But as good teams often do, they found a way to get that spark.

The league's leading rusher, Clinton Portis, was held to 51 yards. 22 of those yards came on one carry. Jason Campbell was sacked seven times and intercepted twice, his first picks of the season. He looked battered and confused. And Jim Zorn looked equally as bad, and badly out-coached by Dick LeBeau.

The Steelers are certainly not without their flaws. This is their worst offensive line in recent memory. They lost their starting right guard, Kendall Simmons, for the season to an Achilles injury. They have been without their starting left tackle, Marvel Smith, for the last four games due to back spasms.

Their depth has taken some serious hits due to injury. Ben Roethlisberger has been banged up and missed the second half last night. Willie Parker has missed significant time. Rashard Mendenhall, their No. 1 draft choice and backup to Willie Parker, broke his shoulder in Week Four and was lost for the season.

Casey Hampton and Brett Keisel missed significant time. Ryan Clark was out last night. Bryant McFadden is out for the foreseeable future.

But this is a well-built team. They have not made excuses and collapsed like the Cowboys. One goes down, the next steps up. Teamwork.

Byron Leftwich was brilliant last night. He stepped in and took charge. He was confident and poised, but I would expect nothing less from a former franchise QB.

The questions remain: Can the Steelers continue on winning with this offensive line? Can Ben withstand the beatings? Can they be consistent in the running game? If they can answer yes to two of these questions, they can make a serious run in the AFC.

One thing that I have learned is that a completely dominant defense can carry a team. This is a dominant defense. They are nearly impossible to run on. They swarm to the ball. They smack you in the mouth. And they are relentless in their pass rush.

The Titans, Giants, Steelers, and Eagles (with a healthy Westbrook) are the elite teams after the first half of the season.

I am not buying into the Panthers or the Bucs.

Enjoy the second half of this season. It should be fun.

Pittsburgh Steelers On the Mend

Good news for the Steelers and their faithful.

Starting strong safety Troy Polamalu is expected to play on Sunday after suffering a concussion versus the Bengals. Nose tackle Casey Hampton and fullback Carey Davis are also expected to return to action.

Fast Willie Parker is scheduled to practice on Wednesday and is apparently upbeat about his chances to return on Sunday.

On a sour note, starting cornerback Bryant McFadden had surgery on his broken forearm yesterday. The injury was suffered in Sundays game versus the Bengals on the same play that Polamalu was injured. McFadden is expected to be out for five weeks.

The Steelers play the defending champion New York Giants on Sunday, which is the kickoff to a difficult stretch in their schedule. Getting healthy can only improve their chances to vault to the top of the AFC.

Moore Shoulders The Load: Steelers Dispose of Bungles

Ben Roethlisberger made it a perfect 10-0 when starting a game in his native state of Ohio by beating the Bengals 38-10. The Steelers rolled into Cincinnati and made light work of the hapless Bengals to finish the first half of their division schedule 3-0.

The Pittsburgh offense started quickly by scoring a touchdown on its first possession, a two yard pass from Roethlisberger to Mewelde Moore. It was Moore’s first of three touchdowns on the day. Moore was the offensive standout, once again filling in for Willie Parker. Moore rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Ben Roethlisberger completed 17 of 28 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

The Steelers defense dominated the Bengals offense and sacked Ryan Fitzpatrick, filling in for the injured Carson Palmer, seven times. James Harrison, LaMarr Woodley, and Lawrence Timmons had two sacks each. James Farrior contributed one to round out the total.

Fitzpatrick and the Bengals showed a little offensive life in the second quarter as the Steelers conceded the dink and dunk passes in an effort to limit the big plays. The Steelers offense also did very little after the opening drive and seemed to want to let the Bengals hang around. They went into the half with a 10-7 lead, however the fourth quarter was all Steelers.

Of greater concern out of Steelers camp are the injuries which continue to mount. The Steelers welcomed back Brett Keisel to the defensive line however Pro-Bowl nose tackle, Casey Hampton, remained out with an injured groin.

Also missing action was starting left tackle Marvel Smith, and starting halfback Willie Parker. Troy Polamalu left the game with a head injury after a hard tackle jarred his helmet loose. Starting cornerback Bryant McFadden also left the game with an arm injury and looks to be lost for an extended period of time.

The Steelers now begin a very difficult stretch in their schedule. The next four games consist of home games versus the Giants, Colts, and Chargers. The one road game is versus the Redskins on Nov. 3rd. If the Steelers can win three of those games they should be in the drivers seat in the AFC, however they will need to get healthy in a hurry. This is a stretch where a few missteps can pull them right back into the pack.

Injury Update: Willie Parker's Steelers Return Uncertain

Willie Parker stepped in a hole while practicing on Wednesday and aggravated the knee injury that caused him to miss the last two games. His status for Sunday's game vs. the Bengals is uncertain. Also missing practice were left tackle Marvel Smith (back spasms) and starting nose tackle Casey Hampton. Hampton was expected to practice on Thursday.

Willie Parker's injury is disconcerting, as fullback Carey Davis is listed as out for Sunday's game with a sprained ankle and Rashard Mendenhall is out for the season. If Parker is unable to play, that would leave the Steelers with only Mewelde Moore and Najeh Davenport in the backfield. Although Moore filled in quite capably against the Jaguars nearly two weeks ago (17 carries for 99 yards), he is much better suited to third-down duties.

The Steelers should be able to overcome one more game without Parker, as the Bengals have been barely able to get our of their own way. However, the following four games are versus the Giants, Redskins, Colts, and Chargers. In the Steelers favor is that only the Redskins game is on the road.

If Parker can't play, look for more spread offense sets with quick passes, screens, and draw plays.

Plaxico Burress Is Fine with It?

Plaxico Burress is “fine with it.” That’s fabulous! I am sure everyone can sleep now.

You are fine with it? You are fine with being suspended by your team? You are fine with hanging your teammates out to dry? You are fine with disappearing as your teammates prepare for a game?

Plaxico was suspended because he didn’t show up to work. He didn’t call anyone to tell them he wasn’t going to be there. Why? Apparently he had to take his kid to school.

What? I am a working father with two children. My wife and I shuffle two kids off every morning and then go to work. It takes me 10 minutes to drop my kid at the bus stop or take him to school. And if I hit traffic during my commute, I use my cell phone to call the office.

Can any of you imagine just not calling into work? Just not showing up? Wow, and I thought our politicians were out of touch. Charles Barkley was right; athletes should not be role models. This man makes more money and has more available resources than most of us will ever have or know. That was his excuse?

You are what you are. That phrase is uttered often. Plaxico Burress has been this since he entered the NFL. He has been arrested. He has been fined. He has been suspended. And this has all happened on more than one occasion.

Plaxico Burress spent five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. They were mostly productive years, but he always teetered on the brink of potential and distraction. He and Hines Ward were seen as perfect complements to each others game.

He had an amazing relationship with Ben Roethlisberger. In fact, Ben lobbied long and hard for Pittsburgh to re-sign him when he became a free agent.

Plaxico’s last game with the Steelers was a playoff loss to the Patriots. It was a game in which he dropped a few balls, including one in the end zone, which would have changed the game.

After the game, he complained about not getting enough touches. He needed to leave the Steelers because he would never become the player that he thought he could be. Thankfully, the Steelers agreed with him. They offered him good luck, and quietly said good riddance.

He was so sought after in the free-agent market that he had one offer. The Giants were the only team that knocked on his door. And when he said he didn’t like the offer, they pulled it off the table. Plaxico was nice enough to come crawling back and ultimately got his contract.

Tom Coughlin is a lot of things. One thing he is not is a push over. It is my humble opinion that both Tiki Barber and Michael Strahan retired because of him. These are two very selfish and egotistical, albeit highly successful, players, who complained that Coach was too tough on them. They even filed a grievance with the players association that practices were too difficult and long.

This type of behavior can’t, and won’t, last under Tom Coughlin. Typically, in today’s society, the player wins these types of battles. However, Tom Coughlin has won a Super Bowl. The Giants have bought into him and his philosophy. Nobody missed Plaxico against Seattle. Yes, it was Seattle, but this team finally believes that the sum is bigger than its parts. This could very well be Plaxico’s last season with the Giants.

Remember this quote, “I am fine with it.” From the looks of it, his team is also fine with it.

Steelers Exorcise Demon, Handle Jaguars 26-21

Give Mike Tomlin credit. He wasn’t too proud, too stubborn, or predictable. He realized that the Steelers had some glaring weaknesses caused by both injuries and personnel decisions over the past few years.

He realized that this team is not built for a power running attack. He spread out the field, employing three wide receiver sets for the majority of the game, and he used four wide receiver sets from time to time. A very good mix of a no huddle offense and timely running plays was a recipe for success.

The result was a 26-21 victory for the Pittsburgh Steelers over an upstart Jacksonville Jaguars team. Ben Roethlisberger was 26-of-41 (that’s right, 41 attempts) for 309 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Ben went over 300 yards for the fifth time in his career, and the first time since 2006.

Mewelde Moore filled in quite capably for an injury riddled backfield. Moore carried 17 times for 99 yards, an average of 5.8 yards per carry. The Steelers amassed 129 total yards rushing on 25 attempts, 5.2 yards per carry.

Not bad numbers for a team whose offensive line is in “disarray.” Not bad for a quarterback who supposedly can’t be successful when he is asked to throw the ball 40 times per game. Not bad for a team who has lost their last four meetings against the Jaguars.

The Steelers should not, and will not, make this type of offense their cornerstone. They will get healthy, and they will go back to running the ball more often. However, they realized that they can employ this type of attack when necessary. And they should also realize that there was no criticism of their offensive line play last night. They were put in a position to succeed.

Running the ball is paramount to success in the NFL. However, it’s not how much you run. It is how effectively you run. The Steelers ran effectively and thus, passed effectively, and blocked effectively.

It also helps to have a dominant defense.

As Injuries Mount, The Offensive Line Spells Trouble For The Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in trouble. Or are they?

The Steelers offensive line woes are well documented. Preseason prognosticators loved the Steelers. The only weakness, and potential Achilles heel, was the offensive line. And so far, the offensive line has been just that, offensive.

Since the Super Bowl run of 2005, the Steelers line has been in steady decline. Gone from that team are starting left guard Alan Faneca who departed via free agency to the New York Jets, and starting center Jeff Hartings to retirement. Starting right tackle Max Starks is still on the team however he lost his job to Willie Colon.

And now Kendall Simmons, the starting right guard, is on injured reserve with a torn Achilles tendon. Four of the five starters from just three years ago are gone.

This could only be considered a disaster. Or can it be a blessing in disguise? The Steelers were traditionally built as a power football team. Strong defense, dominant line play, and a power running game were a given.

However the past two seasons have not been traditional. Yes, the dominant defense is still there. But the offensive line has not been dominant. And there has not been a power running game. The personnel are no longer there for a power running attack.

Many people believe that the power running game is gone because of the offensive line. Not so. The power running game is gone because this team is in offensive transition and fails to recognize it. Willie Parker, out with a sprained knee, is not a power back. He is an average inside runner at best. He is a speed back.

Rashard Mendenhall had a chance to fill the void left by Jerome Bettis, but he too is lost for the year with a fractured shoulder. With Willie Parker, Mewelde Moore, Gary Russell, and newly acquired Najeh Davenport in your backfield you cannot have a power running game.

The Steelers have traditionally been determined to impose their will on other teams. They have tried to force the run. However, when you continually face eight or nine men in the box you can’t be successful running the ball.

Teams like the Eagles and Ravens gave the Steelers fits. They crowded the box, and sent a variety of run and pass blitzes at the Steelers and successfully bottled up their attack. Being stubborn, the Steelers rarely called hot routes, quick slants, and check downs to combat this attack. When they finally did, they began to move the ball again.

Now that the Steelers are forced to realize their weakness they should have no choice but to make the adjustment. The only way that this team will succeed through this transition is to spread the field and throw the ball. They need to mix in the hurry up offense just like they did in the second half versus Baltimore.

They can’t abandon the run, but the run needs to become a secondary option. More draw plays, screen passes, and quick hitting runs need to be the norm. The traps need to be retired for a while.

They have the talent to do this. Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, Nate Washington, Mewelde Moore, and Ben Roethlisberger all have the ability to make this happen. The coaches need to realize this, and lose that stubborn mentality.

Give Ben the chance to shine. He can be a dominant passer. And it will help the offensive line tremendously. Once that ball starts flying, the defenses will not be able to crowd the line and blitz 50 percent of the plays. And voile, the running game will reappear.

A good coach adapts the style and mentality of a team to the talent that he has. It's nearly impossible to run on the Jacksonville Jaguars, and half of their starting secondary is out this week. This is a perfect opportunity to make an adjustment. This is gut check time for Mike Tomlin.

And he should know that when life gives you lemons, it’s best to make lemonade.

Josh Howard: The New Mr. Irrelevant

By now everyone knows the story. If you don't, open up a new tab and search his name. There are countless articles and video clips of the incident.

Now that you are back, let's break this down. This child is ignorant. Actually, that may be offensive to the other ignoramuses of the world, and to children as well. I apologize. He is beyond ignorant.

Josh Howard has every right to his opinion. That is one of the fabulous rights that this country provides. I am not attacking his opinion. Josh Howard has a right to be angry at our country. Every one has that right. He has a right to voice his displeasure. He has a right to protest.

He even has a right to burn the flag.

But he chose to voice his displeasure, like a coward, to some handheld camera during our national anthem at a charity event. He obviously didn't think it would get out. Silly, simple child. This is the digital age—everything gets out and everything is accessible.

Are you upset? Stand up (you have the venue) and say you are upset. Tell us why Josh Howard is upset. But you didn't do that. You spoke for an entire race. By the way, you don't know why you are upset, do you? It's okay, you can admit it now.

Here is a child who spoke for all black people in the U.S. He is black so he doesn't "celebrate that [expletive]". Now that is par for the course with this fool. A man making millions by playing a game. Nothing more than an entertainer who rakes in money and reaps the benefits of this country.

I wonder how all of the other black athletes feel about that comment? My first inclination was that I hoped I would see numerous black athletes condemn his statement. Now I don't. I want what I have seen so far. Silence.

How do the black men and women of our Armed Services feel about that comment? "I am black so I don't celebrate that [expletive]". How many black men and women died in the name of that [expletive]? How must that feel in their stomachs, an ignorant child speaking on behalf of an entire race, while they sit and think about their brothers and sisters who have died on the field of battle, so he is able to reap all of the rewards that this great country has to offer.

I wonder why this child feels that he has the right to speak on behalf of an entire race? But I don't want to hear those heroes say it, they are so much better than him. I hope I know exactly what they think. I hope it is nothing short of resentment. But I wish for silence.

I also hoped that I would hear countless fans booing him. But now I think that is too good for him. I think that is an acknowledgement that he is relevant. I want him to be irrelevant. You can make him irrelevant. Don't cheer. Don't boo. Don't buy his jersey. Certainly do not buy your child his jersey.

A child such as this craves attention. Don't give in. Let him fade away. The only way that the NBA exiles this fool is when he becomes a liability. When he can't help his team win, and most of all, when he no longer generates revenue.

Silence is golden.

Off you go, you small man. Be gone.

Ed Hochuli Receives Undo Criticism

Perhaps I am crazy. Let me take that back: I know that I am crazy. I am quite certain that I am in the minority with the following view point, but that is fine with me. Why in the world is Ed Hochuli being lambasted? Is it because he made a bad call? Is it because he admitted to the bad call? Or are we as fans upset at the rule itself?

Let's start with the first question.

Jay Cutler drops back to pass and clearly fumbles the ball before throwing the pass. It was an empty hand and that is by rule, a fumble. The error occurs when Ed Hochuli blows the whistle and rules the pass incomplete while the play is still going on.

San Diego recovers the ball. However, since the whistle had blown, the play is dead, and it can't be reviewed. The dreaded inadvertent whistle rears its ugly head again. This is a bad call for sure. Ed Hochuli correctly spots the ball and Denver maintains possession.

They proceed to score AND successfully convert a two-point conversion for the win. Great call, Coach Shanahan!

Second question. It was a bad call; that has been established and accepted by Ed Hochuli. By the way, he is widely considered as one of the finest referees in the NFL. For those of us that watch the NFL, bad calls happen during every game, and many go unnoticed by the fans and uncorrected for various reasons.

This one stands out because it was the end of the game and resulted in the go-ahead touchdown. But let's make one thing perfectly clear. San Diego gave up 39 points! Feel free to stop Denver at any time guys. And they gave up the two-point conversion. Feel free to break up the pass and win the game.

How about "manning up" just one time?

Let's jump back to 2005, during the Steelers' run to the Super Bowl. Does anybody remember the Divisional playoff game vs. the Colts? Remember those calls? Remember the Polamalu interception that wasn't? The Steelers overcame and won. Granted, it's tough to do, but the good teams overcome.

And when they don't, they don't point the fingers at the referees. They look in the mirror and blame themselves. That's called being a man. Norv Turner needs to check himself. The San Diego defense lost that game, not Mr. Hochuli.

Is Ed Hochuli being chastised for admitting the mistake? Perhaps. Maybe he should have hidden, like most officials do. He didn't have to own up to it, but that's the way he is. He is a stand up guy. Good for you, Ed. I am sure you have made mistakes before, and we have all moved on. Everyone will get over this as well.

So, the answer is that we are upset with the rule itself. Absolutely, the "inadvertent whistle" is a horrible rule and should have been addressed long ago. The rules committee should address it in the offseason and hopefully make the necessary changes.

Finally, I just read that Ed Hochuli will be "marked down" for this erroneous call. Are you kidding me? From his point of view, it looked incomplete. He blew the whistle. He got it wrong, but this is not the first blown call.

Give me a break with this one. The Chargers need to grow up, and the NFL needs to stand by their official. If the officials get reprimanded for every blown call, then we will be without officials before Week 10! It's called being human.

So NFL, while you are on your soapbox with reprimands, would you please do me a favor? Would you reprimand Braylon Edwards for dropping balls? How about Kellen Winslow for complaining that he wants the ball and then dropping it? How about reprimanding Norv Turner for being a cry baby?

I think you get the picture.
