How Far Does Team USA Soccer Have To Go in the World Cup To Be Successful?

It is agreed that the U.S. men's soccer team is no longer filler on the world stage.

In the wake of a favorable draw that—if it plays at the level that is now expected of it—should pose little challenge, the question is how far must the U.S. go in the knockout stages for it to be called a success?

Ideally, a win would be the greatest success, but let's stay realistic here. The U.S. has shown it can upset a world power, but in the World Cup it would need to upset two, at least. But still, a deep run is very possible.

There is a realistic chance that the U.S. can beat out England for top of the group. It just takes three tasks to do this.

1. Take Points from England

A draw seems the likeliest way for the U.S. to do this but a repeat of Belo Horizonte would be great. Both teams are similar given the amount of U.S. players in the EPL (Altidore, Dempsey, and Howard the most well-known), so either a back-and-forth attacking display or a case of two teams canceling each other out is the most likely possibilities.

2. Beat Algeria and Slovenia

The U.S. got the draw it wanted with winnable ties against Algeria and Slovenia. The Algerians have many players throughout Europe like the U.S. does but have few regular key players on teams as most are subs and reserves.

Slovenia is the smallest team in the World Cup with as many people as Long Island and the size of Massachusetts. With players scattered throughout small- and medium-sized teams in Europe, they are similar to the U.S. in that respect. But the U.S. are far more talented than either of these two teams, so wins are likely and necessary.

3. Keep Clean Sheets

As much as the U.S. are expected to win against Algeria and Slovenia, England's expectations are much higher. Which is why clean sheets are vital since, assuming both teams beat Algeria and Slovenia and draw, goal difference will be the deciding factor in regard to who goes atop the group. If the U.S. keeps their clean sheets, the pressure will be on the English back four to keep clean sheets as well or finish second.

A major challenge for the U.S. will come in the round of 16, as the team will meet either Germany, Australia, Serbia, or Ghana—all four with great talent. Germany and Ghana each have ended the last two World Cup runs for the U.S. and have lethal talents. Serbia finished atop a group that had France in it, and the Aussies are an old talented team that most feel that this year is the last chance for a golden generation.

Beat any of those four and the World Cup can be successful.

The quarterfinal would likely be Argentina, France, or, most exciting and most winnable, Mexico. U.S. vs. Mexico World Cup quarterfinals—it would be the dream matchup for many U.S. supporters. And we'd be at the stage where anything is possible.

As it is for every World Cup.

Now or Never: How FIFA Must Order a Replay for the Good of the Game

By now we all know what happened at the Stade de France on Wednesday. Today we now see the backlash of Thierry Henry's blatant handball in extra time of the second leg of the World Cup Qualifier Playoff against Ireland.

Now the world turns its eyes to FIFA as the FAI have lodged an official protest asking for a replay of the game. They deserve it too. Saying that they got the short end of the stick is a gross understatement, but it's the cleanest thing I can say to describe it.

The way I see it Sepp Blatter has three options:

Order a total replay of the game. The likely result if Ireland's protest works. We would start all over in Paris. This is not the best option for Ireland or France given the club schedules both teams are under and the hassle of ticketing for fans of both nations. It would also benefit the French who in all fairness were simply outplayed by the Irish and would give them a much needed mulligan.

Deny the protest and let the result stand. If Blatter chooses this option he is bound to have critics from every country, except France. He would probably give Henry a fine of a few thousand dollars which Henry could probably pay off with a smile on his face. It would be an acceptance of cheating and could harm his position as president of FIFA.

Disallow goal resume play with free kick and red card for Henry. I call this the George Brett option after the acceptance of the Kansas City Royals' protest over the pine tar game. Henry should get a red card due to the intentional handball. The match could take place in closed doors but all it would take is 20 minutes of extra time and penalties. There'd be probably 40 minutes of match action so the players would be busy for at most two hours.

The decision lies in Sepp Blatter and it will be a major factor in his legacy. He could go down as either the man who turned a blind eye in the face of scandal or the man who preserved justice, integrity, and beauty in the beautiful game.

The Unnoticed Team in New York and How It's Skating To Change That

"We have a lot of respect for that team. They work hard and are extremely well-coached. Teams talk a lot about working hard, but I don't think you can say that for every team in this league. The Islanders do. There's a reason five of our last seven games against them have gone to overtime." Brooks Laich - Washington Capitals after beating the Islanders 3-2 in overtime on October 24

With football and basketball season underway, the average New York sports fan is preoccupied with the Jets, Giants, or Knicks. Add in the Yankees in the World Series and the already lowered view of hockey in New York is lowered. Now add the usual exposure the Rangers receive being the team in the city and it leaves the Islanders as a pretty unnoticed team.

But a recent run of six games without regulation defeat and four straight wins and the Islanders have quietly put themselves in the top eight of the Eastern Conference at the end of tonight's play.

A young team mixed with aged veterans they were viewed as a team whose veterans would serve as mentors until the March deadline when they would be dealt for draft picks. Though that may happen if things don't pan out, the fact is that the young players are showing signs of improvement.

They have all adopted well to coach Scott Gordon's system which provides constant pressure on the forecheck and it has led to mistakes by the opponents' defenseman. Giveaways by both Capitals defenseman Mike Green and Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers leading directly to goals by Richard Park.

The system also leads to sloppy clearing which prolongs the forecheck and allows the Islanders to maintain a cycle in the offensive end for prolonged periods of time. The one problem is the physical demand which may be problematic towards the end of the season.

The young players, headlined by number one overall draft pick John Tavares, are all showing progress. Kyle Okposo has been making more aggressive power forward moves towards the goal and scoring. Josh Bailey has been showing his willing to shoot and develop his over play-making ability.

Tavares has been consistant averaging just under a point a game. Jeff Tambellini has shown a scoring touch that has eluded him for the past two years and has brought him from potential NHL reject to tied with Matt Moulson for the team lead in goals with six.

The pleasant surprise is the aforementioned Matt Moulson who has been on a line with Tavares and Okposo. He has been the finisher for that line and is showing that he is deserving of his spot on the number one line for the future.

The test comes up now for the Islanders as nine of their next ten games are on the road as they face tough teams like the Capitals, Sabres, New Jersey Devils, and Boston Bruins, plus a trip to Minnesota and St. Louis to face the Wild and Blues, respectively.

The Islanders have shown that they can play with the big boys of the Eastern Conference already hence the quote and forcing both the defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins and the Montreal Canadiens to overtime and beating the Capitals in Washington last week.

If the Islanders have a solid road trip and continue their current performance...then it is time to notice the Islanders.

The Final Piece? Will Edwards Help The Jets Reach The Promise Land?

Earlier today, the New York Jets acquired Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns for Jason Trusnik (special-teamer), Chansi Stuckey (the number-two receiver coming into the year), and two draft picks believed to be a third- and fifth-round.

Edwards is a legitimate deep threat, something that rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez (oddly enough the Jets got the pick to use on him from...the Browns) could benefit from greatly. This should allow for Jericho Cotchery, the current number one receiver to slip back into the number two role where he is better suited, and for tight end Dustin Keller to enjoy more freedom in the passing game.

The trade should also help the Jet running game, which is already ninth in the league. Now, we won't see what we saw last week where the Saints constantly stacked the line with eight or nine guys and forced Mark Sanchez into making mistakes.

If Edwards performs, the Jets offense will be one of the best in the league.

There is one big trouble spot for Edwards and the Jets... his off field issues. There are allegations that he assaulted a friend of LeBron James at a Cleveland nightclub. No charges have been followed but the NFL is investigating. Edwards was partying with Donte Stallworth the night he killed a pedestrian in Miami.

He also was caught speeding and had to pay a fine and serve community service.

Jets GM Mike Tennenbaum has expressed confidence in Edwards though its hard to show 100 percent confidence in him since New Yorkers have seen the Plaxico Burress fiasco and given Edwards's prior history, and being New York City means that he could face potential career threatening tempatation.

For Jet fans, hopefully he'll make headlines on the field, not off the field.

Not Out of the Woods Yet, USA Still Has Work to Do In Order to Qualify

After surviving a scare against El Salvador, in which the US appeared at times to be the team who shocked Spain in July and at other times the inconsistent team who crashed out of Germany '06, the US now face Trinidad & Tobago who is another team that qualified for Germany in '06, but are highly unlikely to qualify for South Africa as they stand on just five points and would need to win their last three games to have a chance.

Nevertheless, the US cannot overlook the bottom-dwelling island nation.

T&T may just be a shell of the '06 squad that qualified with only two players having double digit appearances for the Soca Warriors, but the addition of Jlloyd Samuel of Bolton and Bobby Zamora of Fulham add some talent to this squad. (Zamora is on the roster, but may not play on Wednesday.) They also still have Cornell Glen, the forward for the San Jose Earthquakes, and Kenwyne Jones, the Sunderland forward.

Those two may pose a threat to the USA back four which at times appeared sketchy at best, but the US will benefit from Onyewu's return as he will bring the stability to the defense that a good center back brings. The US will need a much better performance from the left back spot where against El Salvador Bornstein's terrible clearance led to the El Salvador goal.

In the midfield, a better effort is required from Dempsey who at times got over technical leading to turnovers, but he did atone by scoring the equaliser but should've scored a second on a 1 v. 1 with the goalie in the second half. Bradley and Feilhaber were decent. Bradley made himself more of a threat with his long range efforts. Feilhaber didn't do anything good nor bad. As for Donovan, he atoned for a sloppy first half free-kick by playing another superb game.

Up front, the stanky legs were superb again although Davies coming off injured in the second half is cause for concern, but his usual high octane, aggressive play helped spark the US come back especially after the El Salvador goal as he almost scored while being closely marked by two men in the area.

Altidore played well too with a superb finish for the game-winner although he was not marked. His technical play and football sense have improved quickly and will continue to improve provided Phil Brown gives him good playing time at Hull City and he should be under good hands with former Celtic and Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink recently signing for the Tigers.

Lastly, Tim Howard did well to direct the defense, but part of the blame for the first goal goes to him as he had went off his line and guessed far post only to be fooled as the header went out of his reach. All-in-all he did his job.

For Wednesday the US just needs slight improvements in the midfield and a new leftback or a much better Bornstein to ensure victory.

Prediction: USA 2 T&T 1

Back four will give one up just to raise everyone's heart rate.

Can the Crosby-Ovechkin Rivalry Rival the Bird-Johnson Rivalry of Past?

Back in the eighties, the sports world stopped whenever the Celtics and Lakers would meet in the NBA Finals, mainly to see the two superstars play against each other. Obviously we know them as Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Now some 25 years later we have the two superstars of the NHL meeting in the playoffs and the sports world should stop right now if it hasn't already.

There are so many ways you can compare the Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin match up of now to that of Bird-Johnson a generation before.

For starters, both Crosby and Ovechkin and Bird and Johnson were amongst the best at their positions. The argument can be made that Crosby is not the best center in the NHL; but in terms of winger (Ovechkin), small forward (Bird), and point guard (Johnson) there is no doubt that they are/were the best.

The two pairs also share the same contrasting personalities. Both Crosby and Bird were much less concerned with putting on a show as Ovechkin and Johnson were. Not to say that Ovechkin or Johnson were showboats, they just simply are known for adding a little razzle dazzle to the game, whereas Crosby and Bird are not known for that.

However, the two pairs do have their differences. (Not counting the sport.)

For now anyway, Crosby and Ovechkin will not meet in the Stanley Cup Finals since they both play in the Eastern Conference whereas Bird and Johnson did play in the finals four times. This is big since the duel between Crosby and Ovechkin isn't occurring during the Cup Finals, there is a little less attention focused to it since there is a chance that both these teams will not win the Cup whereas with Bird and Johnson one would be holding the trophy and one would not.

Also for now, both Crosby and Ovechkin do not have their names engraved on Lord Stanley's Cup but Bird and Johnson both have NBA Finals rings. The all too true cliche of not being legendary without winning is true here. There have been a lot of great duels between great players but the ones that are truly remembered are when both players have won and are fighting to win again.

The Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry has only now begun to start to reach its potential with the rise of the Capitals into an overall team to be reckoned with in the NHL and the Penguins making the Stanley Cup Finals last year. Within the next few years both of these players will have had their taste of victory, and that will only take this rivalry to another level.

Top Five Matchups for 2010 NHL Winter Classic

All is expected to go smoothly for the NHL today at Wrigley Field for the second annual Winter Classic between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings. But now comes the time to speculate on who will be playing outdoors on New Year's Day 2010.

The five best bets are (in no particular order) :

1. Rangers v. Islanders/Bruins at Yankee Stadium

This one has been on the table since last season and Yankee officials have actually shown enthusiastic approval of the idea. The problem is that New Yorkers would prefer an Islander-Ranger winter classic, but it seems the powers that be in the NHL (Mr. Bettman) would prefer the Bruins take the place of the Isles for the ratings.

Speaking of the Bruins...

2. Bruins v. Canadiens at Fenway Park

Also on the table since last season these two Northeast and Original Six rivals would certainly have the prestige and ratings appeal to have the game. It also would take place in the second-best hockey area in the country (sorry, Minnesota is THE State of Hockey).

The only problem is the logistics of trying to setup a game at Fenway, but if they can do it at Wrigley, it definitely is possible.

3. Penguins v. Flyers at Beaver Stadium

A rivalry on the rise given the success of the Penguins as of late and Beaver Stadium in State College would certainly provide a unique venue with a chance to see upwards of 100,000 people watch a game in Happy Valley.

The problem is that this game would be at a somewhat neutral site. I'm sure Sidney would convince the NHL that it would be a good proposition.

4. Wild v. (Division foe) at TCF Bank Stadium

As previously mentioned, Minnesota is the state of hockey so an outdoor game would be ideal for a state known for having kids play shinny on the frozen lakes. The NHL wouldn't have an ideal pick for Minnesota to play, but chances are it would be the Avalanche.

5. Flames v. Oilers at Commonwealth Stadium

Go back to the place where it all started in 2003 with the Oilers and Canadiens in the Heritage Classic, but with the province of Alberta at stake. It worked well there and led to what we have today.

Although allowing this is the third worst thing to happen to the NHL in terms of on-ice matchups and ratings behind hockeytown vs. non hockeytown final (e.g. Senators v. Ducks) and an all-Canadian final (e.g. Canadiens v. Flames).

Some other options I've seen mentioned were Washington, so the Alexs get the spotlight, but it's a little too south in terms of weather, Pittsburgh and Moscow.

NFL Week 17 Preview: A Chance to See Glory and Infamy

For the first time in NFL history a team has started a season 0-15 but Detroit's quest for futility is just one of the many headlines in the NFL for the final week of the regular season.

The playoff picture is still being painted and it keeps getting more abstract by the day as a number of teams or trying to have a shot to play in the Super Bowl.

For the most part each game is important so let's cover them all (the meaningful ones).

(Note each game is on Sunday times Eastern)

1:00 PM Games

St.Louis at Atlanta

Not much to play for for the Rams but Atlanta has a chance to win the division and win a first round bye with a win and a Carolina loss. For Atlanta a first round bye would be another highlight of an amazing year where few expected them to contend with first year coach Mike Smith and rookie quarterback Matt Ryan who replaced the incarcerated Mike Vick.

Chicago at Houston

Chicago's overtime win over Green Bay makes this game meaningful as they need a win and a Viking loss to win the division and qualify. Houston has done well winning four out of five but at 7-8 it was too little too late for the Texans. For the Bears they have won three straight and are trying to mount a final surge.

New York at Minnesota

The Giants clinched home field so they have nothing to gain in this game. As for the Vikings a win or a Bear loss clinches the division and a playoff spot. The Vikings have won four out of five but lost when they had a chance to clinch on Sunday to the Falcons who mounted a final minute rally to win.

Carolina at New Orleans

The Panthers lost a tough one to the Giants on SNF but still have work to do this week as they can still wind up out of a home game in January if they lose and Atlanta wins. The Saints were plagued by inconsistency at times Drew Brees was getting MVP talk and at times they looked horrendous and they also lost four games by less than a touchdown which proved costly as they have nothing to play for.

Cleveland at Pittsburgh

The first game here that is meaningless as the Browns are out of contention and the Steelers are locked in as the number two seed and have a bye for the first round.

Oakland at Tampa Bay

The Raiders have also been somewhat inconsistent beating playoff contenders and losing to first overall pick contenders. The Bucs need a win and a Cowboy loss to get in the playoffs. The Bucs have been fading as of late losing three straight and two of those to division opponents. They have already lost/will lose their defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin to the University of Tennessee since he is opting to join his son, Lane who was named coach of the Volunteers after getting fired by the Raiders.

Tennessee at Indianapolis

Meaningless game as both teams are locked in at their respective seeds but the Colts have been red hot winning eight in a row.

Detroit at Green Bay

Also meaningless but the Lions have not roared all year as they are 0-15 and could be the first team ever to go 0-16 which would be another black mark for a city that has been declining in the past few years. Green Bay has paid for their treatment of Brett Favre as they will go from 13-3 to out of the playoffs.

New England at Buffalo

The AFC East has been a dogfight to say the least. Three teams all fighting for one maybe two spots and it has gone back and forth. The Bills seemed to be contenders until the wheels fell off their season about midway through.

The Pats need a win and a Dolphin loss to win the division or a Raven loss to earn a wild-card spot. Impressive for a backup quarterback who has proven himself worthy in Matt Cassel and a team that came back from a tough overtime loss to the Jets in week 11.

Kansas City at Cincinnati

Meaningless

4:15 PM Games

(Note that its at 4:15 which means fans at home can watch a meaningful 1:00 game longer and not be left hanging if it is still close late)

Jacksonville at Baltimore

For the Ravens its easy win at home and you're in, lose and you go home. Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco has done well and has put the Ravens in this position and the Baltimore defense has been themselves.

Miami at New York

The showdown that seemed unlikely to be important in August is as important as can be in December. For the Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington has revived his career and the introduction of the "Wildcat" has caused problems for every team they haved faced. The Jets have flown turbulently this year at times flying high and at times destined to crash, Sunday will determine how this flight will end.

Brett Favre's leadership has helped the Jets enormously but his decision making has hurt them just as much. A defense that seemed stifling a few weeks ago now appears to be a mirage as teams have been able to pass with relative ease against them. For Miami a win and they win the division a loss and it could spell disaster since they lose the head to head with Baltimore. For the Jets a win and a Patriot loss wins the division or a Raven loss gets them a wild card.

Seattle at Arizona

Arizona clinched the NFC West and Seattle is out of it so meaningless

Washington at San Francisco

The home loss to Dallas proved costly to the Redskins and the 49ers are out of it as well so meaningless

Dallas at Philadelphia

These two NFC East rivals meet again with playoffs on the line again. The Cowboys have made it hard for themselves with off field sagas and on field enigmas. The Eagles have surged after tying the Bengals in the worst game this season. Donovan McNabb has gone from the butt of the joke to potential hero but it has been the play of Brian Westbrook that has led the Eagles. For the Cowboys a win and they're in. For the Eagles a win and losses by Tampa Bay and Chicago gets them in.

8:15 PM

Denver at San Diego

Winner take all in this one as the AFC West is on the line. Both teams have potent offenses with good quarterbacks. Jay Cutler has led the Broncos to the third best passing attack in the league despite losing running backs like loose change. Phillip Rivers has led the Chargers to the seventh best passing attack despite an ineffective LaDainian Tomlinson who has had a nagging toe injury. The Southern California weather should serve as no hindrance to these teams as both these teams will light the score board.

My Predicted Playoffs

AFC

1. Titans

2. Steelers

3. Patriots/Jets

4. Chargers

5. Colts

6. Patriots/Jets

I see a Raven choke on offense as the Jags eke it out. No way will Favre nor the fans let the Jets lose at home.

NFC

1. Giants

2. Panthers

3. Bears

4. Cardinals

5. Falcons

6. Buccaneers

The Eagles will play spoiler despite being eliminated and the Vikings will fall victim to the schedule since the Giant running backs can beat any team no matter who is in there.

Why New York Islanders Fans Have Reason for Hope

Through most of last nights game against the Montreal Canadians, the Islanders looked like a team trying to hold the flood gates together for as long as possible. Then with one unimaginable twist of fate everything changed.

Coming into the season the Islanders were predicted to be in the running for the number one draft pick and be out of contention for the playoffs by March. Through the first month of the season, the Islanders didn't do much to disprove that.

Then came two instances that marked the high point and the low point of the season for the Islanders.

November: 1 Montreal Canadians @ New York Islanders

In the first two periods of the game the traveling fans from Montreal were silenced by four Islander goals and they led 4-1 after 40 minutes. But in the third period everything fell apart.

The Canadians scored four times in the third period including two goals in 1:13 that first tied the game then gave the Canadians the lead. By the end of the game the Nassau Coliseum felt like the old Montreal Forum with the noise made by the away fans. The Canadians would hold on to win 5-4.

But a funny thing would happen between that game and now.

Just as it seemed as if the Islanders would be in for an extremely long year, they began to get hot. Between the first and now the Islanders have only lost three times. They won games against the Rangers, Senators, and Canucks all teams forcasted to have good years. Granted Ottawa has been slumping as of late they are still a good team. They have weathered injuries and suspensions and are now turning heads around the league.

Then last night everything came full circle.

November 24: New York Islanders @ Montreal Canadians

Proving that nothing in the world is predictable the Canadians came into that game seemingly going the opposite direction of the Islanders. They won only three times and two of them were against the Senators. Nonetheless the atmosphere at the Bell Centre made a game in the middle of November feel like a playoff game.

The Islanders started out well with a powerplay goal from Richard Park but the Canadians came back to score twice through goals from Steve Begin and Josh Gorges. Maxim Lapierre scored in the second to make it 3-1 but Trent Hunter scored to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes. Judging from the run of play it could've been 6-2.

In the third, the Canadians peppered the Islander goal trying to get the insurance goal but the defense held on. Then with fifteen minutes gone by in the period luck finally turned the Islander way.

After a questionable call against Sean Bergenheim was signaled by the referees goalie Canadian goalie Carey Price went to the bench in favor for an extra attacker with the puck still be fought for in front of the penalty boxes. Then Ryan O'Byrne picked the puck up unaware that a delayed call was in effect and that his goalie had gone to the bench. He entered his zone being pressured by Doug Weight and tried to pass to the goalie to redirect it. His goalie wasn't there and it slid in the net.

O'Byrne buried his head in his hand while being booed and heckled by the local fans. The game was tied.

In overtime, both teams managed to get a good chance but were denied by the goalies. A shootout followed and the both Richard Park and Bill Guerin calmly converted and Andre Kostitsyn and Alex Tanguay were denied by Islander goalie Joey MacDonald.

The Islanders had won a game that they appeared to be at times holding on for deer life in.

For a team, that seemed to be getting ripped off by the league and going through an era of bad luck last night showed that maybe the hockey gods are beginning to smile on the Islanders.

Now if those same hockey gods can ensure a new arena then the Islanders would be set.

Calls For Change Go Unheeded As Mottau Gets Only a Two Game Suspension

This season, the rising concern in the NHL has been hits to the head and last night's hit by New Jersey Devils defenseman Mike Mottau on Islanders winger Frans Nielsen was a prime example.

Nine days ago, Islander defenseman Thomas Pock elbowed Ottawa Senators forward Ryan Shannon and received a five minute major penalty, a game misconduct, and a five game suspension that's still being served.

The calls for change came around a month before that when Islander Doug Weight leveled Carolina Hurricane Brandon Sutter giving him a concussion. Weight went unpunished. And Devil coach Brent Sutter, a former Islander and Brandon's father, had this to say on Weight's hit:

"I'm not blaming anybody, but I know firsthand a check like that wouldn't have happened 20 years ago because you know what the consequences would've been."

This comes from a man who when he captained the Islanders in the 1990 playoffs failed to respond when his teammate and star Pat LaFontaine was knocked unconscious by Ranger James Patrick. The only quote after the game was from Mike Vukota, a born-again Christian.

Back to now, today NHL " discipline man" Colin Campbell handed Mottau a two game suspension for his hit on Nielsen (breaking news Nielsen is out 8-12 WEEKS with multiple leg injuries) and the referees Dave Jackson and Dan O'Rourke gave Mottau a two minute minor and when Trent Hunter came after Mottau he received a two, five, and ten (minor for instigating, five for fighting, ten minute misconduct).

These two things are where I believe that all the stuff the NHL has been saying it will do about hits to the head is a JOKE.

Campbell gives Mottau a slap on the wrist for leaving his knees and elbowing Nielsen in a game in which Nielsen was playing one of his most complete games in the season. When Islander GM Garth Snow talked to Campbell about the hit today Campbell stated that he didn't see Mottau hit Nielsen in the head in any of the videos.

Complete and total lie.

Those two referees, Jackson and O'Rourke, are also jokes. They see a teammate come to defense of his linemate and penalize him when stuff like this happens all the time. Hunter didn't instigate the fight since Mottau's hit caused the whole incident and since he didn't instigate the fight he shouldn't have gotten the misconduct.

I'm going to stop now since this is pissing me off a lot to know that Campbell and Sutter are hypocrites.

Total side note:

Salute to Patrick Roy, the best goalie the NHL has seen. Classy salute by the Canadiens organization and props to the idea of having him walk the concourse to share the moment with fans.

For those of you wanting to judge for yourselves here's the link to the hit courtesy of hockeyfights.com:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE0_hDWieRQ

Grading the New York Islanders: Not Bad, But Not Good

As the NHL season reaches the quarter-mark, the time comes to put teams into three categories. The contenders, the pretenders, and those whom we are not quite sure about.

The Islanders fall into the third category.

Before the season began, many saw the Islanders as a team that's going to contend for John Tavares and not for the playoffs. New coach Scott Gordon's new style was viewed with skepticism and the team was viewed as one that could go only as far as goalie Rick DiPietro would take them.

The roster appeared to be a team that is trying to rebuild with old bricks with young players such as Kyle Okposo and Josh Bailey mixed with veterans Bill Guerin and Doug Weight. It also included players that could possibly be on their last strike in terms of succeeding in the NHL.

Offense

When it seemed as if he were on the verge of retirement, Doug Weight managed to rediscover the scoring touch that made him so great. With 16 points on the year, he is on track to have 73 by season's end. Last year, no Islander broke 50. Trent Hunter has seven goals on the year and is on track to be a 30 goal scorer. Last year, no Islander broke 25.

Mark Streit has four goals on defense so far. Islander defenseman combined to score 16 goals last year. Rookies Josh Bailey and Kyle Okposo are beginning to blend after Bailey missed some time with an injury.

Bailey who's in the midst of a nine-game tryout before the Islanders have to decide to keep him or send him back to the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL has yet to score a goal but has looked impressive and if he stays could form a young scoring duo with Okposo.

Grade- B- Only 47 goals so far but they have shown at times the ability to light up the scoreboard against some high quality competition. (The first 40 minutes against Montreal, lets not talk about the last 20 minutes)

Defense

The Islanders' biggest offseason move was the signing of free agent defenseman Mark Streit. Streit had just come off a career year with the Montreal Canadians and was one of the top defenseman available. There had been doubts with his defensive ability since he was a power play specialist.

When early-season injuries hampered Andy Sutton, Brendan Witt, Radek Martinek, and Chris Campoli he became the top defenseman. He performed superbly as a front-line defenseman who can not only help in his own zone but wreak some havoc in the opponent's zone.

Grade- C The defense would be better but without so many key parts, it's understandable why they have given up 60 goals this year.

Special Teams

The Isles special teams have done fairly well with their special teams. The early season injuries and offseason acquisitions have led to some success and some problems. The power play is 13 for 90 with a 14.4 percent conversion rate, currently 27th which leaves room for improvement. The penalty kill is 82 for 98 with a 83.7 percent killing rate, currently 11th.

The keynote on special teams have been shorthanded goals, the Islanders have six which is good for 2nd in the league. Proof that Scott Gordon's style of an aggressive forecheck can lead to success as it has caused pointmen on the opponent's power play to be more careful with the puck or risk a breakaway the other way.

Grade- B The penalty kill has not only performed in preventing a power play goal but it has proved to be a possible scoring threat itself. Now about that power play..

Goaltending

It was agreed by all the pundits before the season that the Islanders could go only as far as Rick DiPietro could take them. It didn't take long to find out he wasn't 100% ready to take the Islanders anywhere.

After offseason surgeries on a hip and knee, DiPietro suffered another knee injury requiring surgery and is out for a few more weeks. With DP out the job went to journeyman Joey MacDonald.

Mac started out a little shaky but eventually began to play well and is now gaining folkhero status among Islander fans. (Like his predecessor) He even outdueled the best goalie currently playing in the league (Brodeur is hurt) in Roberto Luongo for a shootout win over the Canucks.

Grade-A- Without MacDonald the Islanders would've began selling the Tavares jerseys and season tickets for 2009-2010. (Slight exaggeration but you get the point)

Overall C- Could be a whole lot worse but it could be better and there is signs that it could get better.

Letter To MLS: How to Make Plan Becks Work?

To the owners of all MLS teams:

Here's an idea for the honchos at MLS, go sign the games' most recognizable person to a big contract in a big city. Wait, that's been done—and its not working.

What to do? Here's an idea.

As many of you know, Becks has signed a deal to go to AC Milan on a loan spell until the MLS season starts again and Landon Donovan is receiving high praise from Jurgen Klinsmann while training with Bayern Munich and is likely to be signed in January. What I propose is that you promote your players to go on loan spells with European clubs in order to increase the quality of the players.

Here are some reasons why:

Increased promotion of the league

Increase talent on both the team and international level

Chance for European club to find a "diamond in the rough"

Potential creation of a partnership between MLS and European clubs

Reason 1: Increased Promotion

Whenever a Yank goes abroad you hear about it, Adu to Benfica, Edu to Rangers, etc. So if you have more Yanks going abroad there will be a significant increase in the publicity the MLS would receive. When the players come back, they would hopefully be better and their new skills would lead to an increased desire to see them and therefore increased attendance.

Reason 2: Increased talent

Its proven that the teams in Europe are far better than those in MLS. So when you have players playing on these teams, chances are they can only get better with the high quality of coaching, training, and performance they have.

This would lead to a better product on the field for all teams. It would also increase the quality of the talent pool that some North American countries have since they're internationals are now playing amongst some of the best players the world has to offer. Which can only lead to good things.

Reason 3: Diamond in Rough

This should be called the McBride factor. If it weren't for Brian McBride coming from Columbus Crew to Fulham, chances are Fulham would've never made the great escape they made last year—that is if they would still have been in the Premier League.

If some other European team uses an MLS player and they become a hero, the respect other leagues would have for MLS would rise astronomically and then players could see that as a chance to go to America instead of going to another part of England.

Reason 4: Partnerships

The New York Yankees and the Tokyo Giants have a deal that has the Giants act as a feeder club to the Yankees in return for money (i.e. Matsui). Let's say D.C. United were to form a partnership with Manchester United to send any player Man Utd want in return for a large transfer fee—both teams would benefit both on the pitch and in the pocket.

Man Utd would get the stud prospect and if he performs well would increase sales of anything involving him. DC would get the large transfer fee and it could be used to sign players that other teams couldn't afford which would lead them to have the best team on the pitch which increases attendance.

I see this plan as something that could work but there are so many problems possibly arising that it might be difficult for it to become a reality. If you have a better ideas, please don't hesitate to comment.

Ty Law Returns to Jets: Breaking News

According to reports, the New York Jets have re-signed former cornerback Ty Law to a one-year deal just days before a critical game between another team Law used to play for, the New England Patriots.

According to the NFL network, Law still has a physical to pass so any comment from the Jets won't be expected to occur until he passes it. Interestingly enough, he had received interest from the Jets and Patriots.

Law has had five years of experience with Jets head coach Eric Mangini who, when Law was with New England, coached the defensive backs under current Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Law said to the NFL network:

"This is going to be different playing Thursday night against the Patriots, matching up against my former team and the players I'm used to practicing against, I know they're going to throw at me, but I welcome the challenge."

He also said he expects to be used as a cornerback and safety. If used at corner, he would be with fellow Aliquippa, Pennsylvania native Darrelle Revis. Revis has viewed Law as an idol and in homage wears number 24 for the Jets.

On Revis, Law said:

"That's my little boy, I've watched him grow up and to be able to help him now, it'll be a good deal."

The Jets had started rookie Dwight Lowery out of San Diego State at corner in the first nine games, but he has appeared shaky as of late requiring the acquisition of Law ahead of a tough games in the future for the Jets.

This now creates a roster problem since the Jets now have seven cornerbacks (Law, Revis, Lowery, David Barrett, Hank Poteat, Ahmead Carrol, and Justin Miller) and two kickers (Jay Feely and Mike Nugent).

A corner will be cut since although Nugent nears 100%, Feely has earned the right to keep his job with a good performance in the 47-3 win over the St. Louis Rams last Sunday. According to reports, it will be former Pro Bowl kick returner Justin Miller who has been plagued by injuries over recent years and hasn't played this year.

The last time Law was signed by the Jets, the Jets made the playoffs. Jets fans hope that this year will yield similar results.

Return of a Legend: Maradona to Be New Manager Of Argentina National Team

He's back.

Diego Maradona, legend of the Argentinian national team during the 70s, 80s, and part of the 90s, is now returning as manager according to reports.

The fact that the AFA was willing to interview him surprised Maradona who thought it was a hidden camera show. When asked what direction he wants to take he said: "The direction Julio (Grondona) wants for the national team is the same (Carlos) Bilardo and I have. My job will be watching the players and picking up the ones who are in the best form."

Maradona has six months of coaching experience; two months with Deportivo Mandiyu and four with Racing Club. If appointed he will have to guide a side, that hasn't played to expectations, to qualification for South Africa 2010 through a tricky COMMEBOL region.

Maradona told Fox Sports: "The offer from Julio Grondona attracted me a lot. As soon as it is confirmed, I will start working, but I can say I am very proud.

"I'm putting everything aside for this. There is nothing that can make me look past the national team. Today my path is the national team, my task is to talk to the players and build a solid group. I am sure the guys and Argentinian football will pull through.

"I think we must make the players understand that our shirt is the most important thing, that they cannot exchange money for glory. Glory is much more than money. I know they know that, but we must make them remember that every day.

"We have enough quality to calm the nation. The road to the World Cup is not easy, but I believe in the Argentinian players. Everybody wants to play at the World Cup but we must show our traditions and our style on the field."

If appointed, Maradona is sure to draw attention to his team but from a coaching standpoint it could be glory or disaster. Maradona has little experience and has had feuds with FIFA and the AFA.

His first test would be a friendly against France in February and if he were to fail, there could be national disgrace, if he were to succeed... he will be revered as a god in Argentina, if he isn't already.

Islanders-Rangers: New York Rivalry Renewed (Game One Recap)

It was another entertaining chapter of the Islanders-Rangers rivalry as the Rangers prevailed over the Islanders 4-2, with the help of Chris Drury's two goals.

An up-tempo game throughout progressed in intensity, as we saw the first fight between Nate Thompson and Aaron Voros when they duked it out in the second.

It only took 53 seconds for the Rangers to score. After two great saves by Islander backup-goalie Joey MacDonald, the puck was chipped behind the net by Bill Guerin. But it bounced off of Drury's stick and MacDonald's skate to trickle in, giving the Rangers the lead. It was Drury's first goal of the year, and ended a slump he had fallen into.

The Islanders responded though, getting several chances throughout the period as the game went back and forth. With about ten seconds left in the period, a faceoff to Ranger goalie Henrik Lundqvist's right wound up going to the boards behind the net. Richard Park was able to center it to Kyle Okposo, who beat Lundqvist glove-side to tie it almost nineteen minutes after Drury scored.

It was redemption for Okposo, who missed a chance all alone in front of Lundqvist after a blind pass through the middle of the Rangers zone by Nikolai Zherdev. It was also Okposo's first goal of the year, as he had started in a slump as well.

In the second, the play went back and forth, but at 16:16 of the period Paul Mara ripped a shot at MacDonald. The goalie made the save, but left a rebound that Ryan Callahan was able to pick up and get past the line, giving the Rangers the lead after two.

In the third, Michal Rosvial's slap shot hit MacDonald in the helmet and appeared to daze him momentarily. After he was tended to by the Islanders' trainers, the Rangers were able to work the puck to Scott Gomez, who beat MacDonald short-side from a deep angle to MacDonald's right, increasing the lead to 3-1.

With about eight minutes left to go, the Islanders committed two high-sticking penalties—one being a double minor—which led to a two-man advantage for two minutes for the Rangers. The Rangers would capitalize, as they worked the puck to Drury, whose slap shot was tipped by Nate Thompson's stick and went by MacDonald, sealing the game.

The Islanders would score late with a shorthanded goal from Mark Streit, but it wouldn't be enough, as the final was be 4-2, Rangers.

My three stars:

3a. Mark Streit - Worked hard throughout the game, earning 26:58 of ice time—a game high on both sides. Scored a goal late following up, which may be a sign that Streit is more than an offensive defenseman.

3b. Kyle Okposo - Scored the first Islanders goal late in the first, and was constantly skating. Possibly a sign of good things from the rookie.

2. Chris Drury - Scored two goals. The first one was slightly fluky, but the second was a great shot that might've beaten MacDonald even if it wasn't deflected. Maybe a start to a hot streak.

1. Henrik Lundqvist - Frustrated the Isles with his play, making 28 saves and putting himself amongst the upper echelon of goalies in the NHL.

Good game by both teams, except the Isles couldn't muster up anything in the third before it was too late. But if they played like they did for the first 40 minutes, they just might be fine. The Rangers were able to hold tabs and take advantage of the chances given to them, a mark of a good team.

See you all November 4—because it's not like you have to do something important that day.

Islanders-Rangers: New York Rivalry Renewed

Another year, and another chapter of one of the NHL's best rivalries will be written Monday night. The Islanders and Rangers will renew their rivalry at the Coliseum in front of what usually is an entertaining crowd.

The Islanders come in having lost their last three games and ravaged by injuries. Goalie Rick DiPietro, defensemen Freddy Meyer, Radek Martinek, Brendan Witt, and Andy Sutton are all not expected to play. DiPietro was pulled after giving up two soft goals on twelve shots in the first period of Saturday night's loss to Carolina. Freddy Meyer was also hurt in that game, and will be further evaluated on Monday. If DiPietro is unable to go the Islanders will have to rely on Joey MacDonald to be between the pipes. The Islanders have had some success against the Rangers when starting back up goalies, Wade Dubielewicz beat the Rangers three times in five starts including a crucial win in the final week of the 2006-2007 season that led to the Islanders making the playoffs.

The Rangers come in having won their last two games, and are beginning to click. New signings Wade Redden and Marcus Naslund have performed well, with Naslund scoring three goals, and six assists for nine points in eleven games and Redden scoring two goals and having a plus-minus rating of plus-three. Though the Rangers sit atop the standings in the Atlantic, they have some problems, mainly that Chris Drury has yet to score for the Rangers this season. The only real injury concern in the past week for the Rangers was coach Tom Renney, who was temporarily knocked unconscious by a stick from a Blue Jacket player.

The Islanders need this win to possibly get back on track and show their fans and players that coach Scott Gordon's new style called "overspeed" can actually work and lead to wins. If not, it won't be "overspeed", but "overmatched." The Islanders also lack an enforcer as shown in Saturday night's loss to Carolina as Nate Thompson lost badly in a fight against of all people Tim Gleason.

A Rangers win would further cement their status as the team to beat in the Atlantic after the month of October. The fans and players are satisfied with the play so far, but know they can do better. Ranger fans are always aware that the Islanders will always play them tough so it is not a gimme.

It should be an entertaining game, and hockey fans around New York and Long Island are certainly looking forward to it.

Return of a Legend? Maradona Candidate For Argentina Manager

Diego Maradona captivated fans with his talent on the pitch as a player.

Now he may be doing it as a manager.

One day after Argentina lost its World Cup Qualifier to Chile 1-0 in Santiago (their first lost to Chile in 35 years) manager Alfio Basile resigned as team manager, citing personal reasons.

His resignation shocked the Argentine FA and the people of Argentina, even though they haven't dominated during the qualification round they are still in the top four of the table, and are still expected to qualify for South Africa 2010.

Now the AFA has to look for his replacement. Possible replacements include:

Sergio Batista

He coached the Olympic team to gold in Beijing and, if hired, may produce similar results in South Africa. Also played for the 1986 squad that won the World Cup in Mexico. He served as an assistant to Oscar Ruggeri for San Lorenzo before becoming the U-20/Olympic team manager for Argentina.

Diego Simeone

He coaches at prennial powerhouse River Plate, and won the Clausura in the 2007-08 season. He led Estudiantes de La Plata to an Apertura title over Boca Juniors in a playoff game in 2006. He played in three World Cup squads from 1994-2002, and is also famous for having David Beckham sent off in 1998.

Miguel Angel Russo

He coaches at San Lorenzo, who currently lead the Apertura and won the Clausura in 2007 with San Lorenzo. He led Velez Sarsfield to the Clausura title in 2005 and won the Copa Libertadores with Boca Juniors in 2007, before joining San Lorenzo. He has managed teams in Mexico, Chile, Spain, and Argentina.

Carlos Bianchi

He hasn't coached since 2006, but has led Velez Sarsfield to the Clausura in 1993 and 1996 and the Apertura in 1995. Led them to the Copa Libertadores title in 1994 and in the same year the Intercontinental Cup and also led them to Copa Interamerica in '95. Won the Apertura in 1998, 2000, 2003 with Boca Juniors, and led them to the Apertura in 2003. Won the Copa Libertadores in 2000, 2001, and 2003, and the Intercontinental Cup in 2000 and 2003.

Diego Maradona

It is hard to put all the things he has done in a short paragraph but here it goes. He won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986, won league titles for Boca Juniors and Napoli in Italy, won cups for Napoli and Barcelona.

Has battled cocaine abuse and has been hospitalized for heart troubles. Was Vice President of Boca Juniors from 2005-06 and was credited for hiring Alfio Basile as manager who led the team to the 2005 Apertura, 2006 Clausura, 2005 Copa Sudamerica, and 2005 Recopa Sudamerica. Recently said "I am willing and and at the disposal of Argentina team."

Five likely candidates for Argentina to choose from, and it is unsure whether they will have appointed someone for the November 19 friendly with Scotland at Hampden Park.

Darrent Williams' Murder Case Reaches Indictment: One Step Closer to Justice

For those of you who have forgotten about the event that is now being called the origin of one of the NFL's most serious problems, let me refresh your memory.

It was New Year's Eve 2006. The Denver Broncos had recently lost to the San Francisco 49ers in overtime to end their season and miss the playoffs. After the game, Darrent Williams and then-teammate Javon Walker decided to go to the Safari Club, a local nightclub in Denver, to celebrate at a New Year's Eve party hosted by Denver Nuggets player Kenyon Martin.

An altercation occurred in the club between some club members, some of whom were allegedly members of the notorious Crips gang. Neither Williams nor Walker were believed to have been involved in the scuffle.

At approximately 2:00 AM on New Year's Day, Williams, Walker, and two friends left the club and were traveling in a rented white Hummer H2 limousine. At 2:10, the limo pulled up to the intersection of Speer Blvd. and 11th Ave. An SUV pulled up next to them. The people in the SUV shot at the limo at least 15 times, wounding the two friends, Nicole Reindl and Brandon Flowers.

Williams was shot in the neck, then fell into Walker's lap. Williams was pronounced dead at 2:30 at the age of 24.

In the aftermath, the Denver police impounded a car that was owned by a Crips member waiting trial on drug and attempted murder charges. Other Crips members were questioned, but none were charged.

On May 30 of this year, the Rocky Mountain News claimed to have obtained a written confession to the murder of Williams by Crips member Willie D. Clark. Aside from those three items, the case wasn't looking too good.

But today, a grand jury in Denver officially indicted the same Willie D. Clark on 39 charges ranging from weapons charges to murder. Clark violated his parole four days after the shooting on drug charges.

Williams' mother wasn't available for comment by media sources, former teammate and witness Javon Walker has yet to comment, and Clark's lawyer also has not commented as of the writing of this article.

Former teammate Nick Ferguson, now a member of the Houston Texans, had this to say:

"I trust the people investigating the case did their homework and they won't drag people into court on charges that won't stick. I've seen that happen too many times.

"I'm like a lot of people who knew Darrent. I just want the people responsible to pay their debt to society for taking such a young, vibrant man from his kids and his family.

"Not a moment goes by that I don't think about D-Will and his family after what happened that night."

And for all the people affected by this tragedy, let's hope the charges stick.

Brett Favre Is Flying High—Aging Quarterback Still Looks Sharp

We are four weeks into the season and Jets fans have gone through an emotional roller coaster. It's somewhat typical at this point, and fans should be used to it from previous seasons.

They have experienced remarkable highs, stunning lows, high hopes, and low expectations.

Week One at the Miami Dolphins

When the schedule came out with the Jets going to Miami to start the year, many expected the team to win to get one of its few wins in the season.

But when the face of the division changed with the acquisition of Brett Favre by the Jets and the subsequent signing of Chad Pennington by Miami, both teams upgraded their quarterback situations and turned the game into an instant headline.

Jets fans were not disappointed when Favre found Jerricho Cotchery after a textbook play action fake to Thomas Jones that left Cotchery open for a 56-yard touchdown pass.

The highlight for Jets fans was the second touchdown of the game. Favre was being pulled down by a Miami player but was able to throw a prayer into the end zone that was caught by little known receiver Chansi Stuckey.

The Jets won the game 20-14.

Week Two vs. the New England Patriots

When Favre became a member of the Jets, fans' expectations were high with the prospect of an aerial battle with Tom Brady. But in Week One, Brady tore his ACL when he was hit by a Kansas City player and was lost for the season.

This was supposed to break the AFC East wide-open for the Jets' taking.

Replacing Brady was backup Matt Cassel. Although he had been with the team for a while, he couldn't get playing time for love or money in either USC or New England.

In the end, Cassel didn't score any touchdowns, but he didn't make any mistakes either. And when Favre was intercepted by Brandon Meriweather in the third quarter, the Patriots were able to control the momentum for the rest of the game as they played relatively safe football.

They went on to defeat the Jets for their home opener, 19-10.

Week Three at the San Diego Chargers

Many expected this to be a loss for the Jets with or without Favre since the Chargers are one of the AFC's powerhouses. But after two painfully unlucky losses, there were questions about their mental toughness. Could the Jets have a chance to sneak away with a win?

Things started well with a David Barrett interception return in the first quarter, but that's where it ended. The Chargers would go on to score 38 of the next 45 points.

In the fourth the Jets tried to mount a comeback, but it was not enough. The Chargers won 48-29.

Week Four vs. the Arizona Cardinals

After Week Three, the Jets were 1-2 and many fans were beginning to question whether it was worth it to acquire Favre. He still did not have a full comprehension of the playbook and wasn't on the same page with key receiver Laveranues Coles.

Even worse, at the age of 38, Favre's body wasn't fully recovered from an ankle injury suffered in San Diego.

The Cardinals came into the Meadowlands having not seen their homes in almost two weeks. They chose to stay on the East Coast after a close loss to the Washington Redskins.

In the second quarter, the Jets found their "on" switch, and began to show the potential power of their new offense. Favre and Coles showed off their developing chemistry en route to a three-touchdown performance.

Coles' abilities were in question after missing much of training camp with a nagging injury, and his obvious disappointment with the release of close friend, Chad Pennington.

In the second-half, the Jets continued their assault as Favre found Cotchery twice for touchdowns. He concluded his career day with a touchdown to rookie tight-end Dustin Keller to secure a 56-35 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Week Five—Bye

The Jets are off this week, allowing them to rest and practice. Being able to refine their skills without preparing for another team can only be good for a team that is beginning to operate at its full potential.

Ahead for the Jets lie games with the Cincinnati Bengals, Oakland Raiders, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Immediately following those games is a critical division game against the surprising Buffalo Bills.

The next three games will give the Jets a chance to progress as a team against three relatively weak teams, although Kansas City upset the Denver Broncos in Week Four.

If the Jets can perform well in their next four games, they will become legitimate contenders in the AFC.

If that does happen, it will be time to believe that this really is the year.
