Gonzaga Bulldogs Look To Prove Doubters Wrong Against Michigan State

Michigan State has one goal in mind this season: to one-up last year's performance and bring home a title to East Lansing.

That is still a long ways away, and for now the college basketball world will have to settle for what it is arguably the first marquee non-conference matchup. The young Gonzaga Bulldogs are making the first of many non-conference trips in which they will take on Tom Izzo's seasoned crew.

It is clear that Michigan State is widely held as the favorite, coming in at No. 2 in the both preseason polls. The Zags are, for the first time in a number of years, noticeably absent from the polls, only receiving scattered votes from loyal Northwestern voters.

Gonzaga, known for its traditionally brutal non-conference schedule, opened its season Saturday night with an easy victory against Mississippi Valley State. While the win came easily, Mark Few was not particularly impressed with his teams performance.

"There was some good and some bad," said Few. Elias Harris, the German freshman, played only 19 minutes but recorded 18 points, second to only floor leader, Matt Bouldin. However, much of the play was sloppy, marked by a number of turnovers by the Bulldogs' nine freshmen.

On the other hand, Michigan State returns twelve players from a National Title runner-up team. Led by Raymar Morgan and Kalin Lucas, Michigan State agreed to a home-and-home series with the small Jesuit school from the WCC.

Although this is a rebuilding year for Mark Few, he is challenging his team with one of his hardest schedules in years. After heading to East Lansing, the Bulldogs travel to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational, play Duke in New York City, and head to Chicago for a contest with Illinois, among a number of other noteworthy games.

The last time Michigan State and Gonzaga tipped off was in Maui with Adam Morrison stealing the spotlight in a triple-overtime thriller. Morrison scored 40 points and came away with the tournament MVP although the Bulldogs came up short against UCONN in the championship.

The game will be played on ESPN as part of it's annual college basketball tip-off marathon.

Israeli Basketball Standout to Join Florida Gators

Nimrod Tishman, a 6-foot-6 point guard, is hoping to join Billy Donovan for the 2009-2010 season.

The Israeli guard averaged just over 18 points during the Under 18 European championships where he paired up with some of the world's greatest talents.

Tishman comes to Gainesville just two months after Florida lost star Nick Calathes to professional ball in Greece.

This left the Gators scrambling but they managed to find someone from the international talent pool.

Tishman is the first Israeli to play NCAA basketball since Nir Cohen attended The University of San Diego. Cohen now plays professionally in Israel.

Before Tishman can play, the NCAA needs to review the time he spent playing for the club team, Maccabi-Tel Aviv, the same team that produced NBA forward Omri Casspi.

If he is cleared to play, he will join Erving Walker as Florida's only other guard.

Gonzaga Under the Radar Heading Into the 2009-10 Season

The Slipper Still Fits.

Gus Johnson's famous line after the Zags' 1999 victory over Florida in the Sweet 16 no longer represents the small Jesuit University in Spokane, Wash.

Although it lost to eventual champion Uconn in its next game, Gonzaga has remained a household name among all college basketball fans. Mark Few's squad has played into March the last 11 years, and in that time it has won nine WCC crowns.

However, critics are projecting a down year for the Bulldogs after losing four of last season's starters, including losing Austin Daye early to the NBA.

Thats just what the Bulldogs thrive on.

The spotlight brought on by stars Dan Dickau, Ronny Turiaf, and Adam Morrison is missing this year, even though Matt Bouldin is a preseason All-American candidate. And even with a star-studded schedule, maybe their best yet, the Zags will often be hidden from the media.

Gonzaga is expected to reach the tournament every year. They are consistently expected to succeed, and eventually, fans are hoping for that elusive Final Four berth.

While this may not be the year for that, Few has definitely built a program that can make alot of noise in March.

The Zags are led by senior guard Matt Bouldin, the most highly-regarded player out of the state of Colorado since Chuancey Billups. His career in Spokane has been an inconsistent one, but during last year's campaign, he showed promise and finally displayed some consistency often taking over games when Jeremy Pargo was out of control or when Daye's shooting would go cold.

Bouldin, recruited as a point guard, will most likely have to move to the three in order to make room for sharpshooter two guard Steven Gray and last year's tourney hero, Demetri Goodson.

Often forgotten, Gray went shot-for-shot with Stephen Curry in his memorable first-round performance during Davidson's, similar to Gonzaga's, magical Elite Eight run. Goodson, the lightning-quick Texan guard, hit a floater in the final seconds to put away Western Kentucky in a second-round scare for the fourth-seeded Zags.

While Gonzaga brings back the ever-so-familiar speed to the Northwest, the largest questions are raised about their frontcourt.

Robert Sacre, a massive seven-footer from Canada has battled through injuries early in his career, but when healthy, he brings a defensive face to a generally high-octane offensive powerhouse. Seven-foot five Will Foster will also be able to defensively strengthen the Zags.

What will make or break this season's Bulldogs is one of Few's quieter recruiting classes. Few decided to leave the country to help build his team, and according to many recruiting sites such as Rivals and ESPN, little is know about a number of the recent recruits.

Few is not known for playing his freshman but this year, in order to be a contender, his philosophy may have to change. Candaian Mangisto Arop and Minnesotan Sam Dower are physically ready, and lucky enough for the coaching staff, both are forwards and can easily be inserted into the holes left by Micah Downs and Daye.

GJ Villarino, a former Gillespie recruit at the University of Kentucky, backed out with the coaching change and now finds himself heading to the Northwest to try and join the long list of successful Gonzaga guards.

Elias Harris and Bol Kong, two of the four international recruits, have very little known about them. But according to scouts, they "are NBA built and have NBA mindsets." If that is the case, Few should definitely welcome them in with open arms.

That leaves Kelly Olynyk, who will most likely redshirt to make room for all of the incoming players.

Although this team may be flying under the radar, its schedule will present them with a number of television opportunities. The Bulldogs start right off the bat with a trip to Maui with Arizona, Maryland, and Colorado and follow that up with trips to Michigan State, Illinois, New York to play Duke, Oklahoma. They will then welcome both Wake Forest and Memphis to Spokane.

While fans may not enjoy seeing the Zags ranked low as the preseason previews begin to come out, the Bulldogs perform best when they are not being talked about. The season may begin that way, but as the campaign gets under way, expect Gonzaga to re-enter Sportscenter highlights, and once again become a dangerous threat deep into March.

NCAA Tournament Bubble Watch: Feb. 23

Atlantic Coast Conference

Locks: North Carolina, Duke, Clemson, Wake Forest, Florida State

The top of the ACC is loaded, and Florida State was able to add their name to the list of locks with a thrilling win over Virginia Tech. Don't worry North Carolina fans. You are still in shape for a one seed, and there is a possibility Duke will join you after a solid performance against Wake Forest.

Close to being in: Boston College

Boston College has two solid wins against North Carolina and Duke and really no weak losses aside from Harvard. If they get out of ACC play with a winning record, the Eagles should earn themselves a spot in the Dance.

Still Alive: Maryland, Miami

Maryland kept their hopes alive with a great overtime time win against North Carolina, but there are still a lot of holes in the Terps' résumé. The win against Michigan State is looking better, but other than that, there is an absence of strong wins. A strong showing in the ACC tournament might be able to secure a spot for Gary Williams' squad.

Miami began the season full of hope, but after some struggles midseason, they find themselves on the outside looking in. In order for them to have a chance come Selection Sunday, they need to win out in conference, partnered with a strong showing in the ACC tournament.

Big East

Locks: Pitt, Connecticut, Villanova, Louisville, Marquette, Syracuse

Yes, Syracuse struggled in early January, but they are still going to get out of the Big East with a winning record, which this year should be enough. If it comes down to Syracuse and a mediocre mid-major program, the Orange is a more appealing choice. Pitt and UConn should both be locks for one seeds barring early exits from the Big East tournament.

Close to being in: West Virginia

Like Syracuse, if West Virginia can get out of Big East play with a winning record, they should find a way to squeeze in. However, once they are in, don't count them out, as any Big East team has the opportunity to do some damage.

Still Alive: Georgetown

Georgetown may be the only team with a losing record that can potentially lock up an at-large bid; however, it all comes down the upcoming showdown with Louisville. Without adding that win to their résumé, the Hoyas will have trouble securing a spot without running the table in New York.

Big Ten

Locks: Michigan State, Illinois, Purdue

Michigan State struggled against Purdue but has a strong enough résumé to make a case for a two seed. Illinois was embarrassed by Penn State when they were only able to put up 33 points at home, but that will do nothing more than drop the Illini a seed.

Close to being in: Wisconsin, Ohio State, Minnesota

Each of these programs probably needs to add one or two more wins in conference to erase some of the recent losses they have each suffered to far inferior teams. The Badgers, Buckeyes, and Gophers all have good computer numbers, so if it comes down to that, each of these teams looks set.

Still Alive: Michigan, Penn State

Michigan and Penn State have both stayed alive solely because of solid wins in conference. The Wolverines have two good non-conferences wins against Duke and UCLA, but unless they can find a way to win on the road (2-6), they won't be going anywhere. Penn State will need to beat Illinois and Ohio State in order to make up for the abysmal non-conference schedule.

Big 12

Locks: Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Missouri

Missouri has quietly asserted itself as one of the country's top 10 programs and may be able to make a jump in the Big 12 after Texas and Oklahoma beat each other up in a thriller. Oklahoma will now have to prove that they are more than just the Blake Griffin Show.

Close to being in: Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State is still alive and well solely because of their nearly impossible schedule. It is true they didn't win any of their tough games, but as a result, their numbers look good, and sometimes that is all that matters. One more win against one of the four lock teams might turn the Cowboys into a lock themselves.

Still Alive: None

Pac-10

Locks: Washington, Arizona State

Washington has taken care of business quietly and has landed themselves sole possession of first in the Pac-10. Arizona State still has enough games left to play that they can take over first place from the Huskies, but these are really the only two Pac-10 teams that have done their jobs all year.

Close to being in: UCLA, Arizona, California

Call me crazy, but UCLA's best win is Washington, followed by either Miami of Ohio or Notre Dame. That doesn't sound like an automatic lock yet. They have talent and played a tough schedule, but let them prove that they should be playing in March by doing something in their conference tournament.

Still Alive: USC

USC has played a difficult schedule, but they have not really done anything with it. In order for them to keep their chances alive, they need to win at least two games in the Pac-10 tourney, as well as at least three of their remaining four conference games.

SEC

Locks: None

That's right. There is no one in the SEC that is a definite to be playing in the tournament. One team will have to win the conference tournament, but remember, it could be Georgia.

Close to being in: LSU, Tennessee

The Tigers are 11-1 in conference, but that is not saying much. Tennessee has the hardest schedule in the country, and they have enough good wins that the only way they should be left out would be the result of a historical collapse. The wins over Marquette and Siena are looking better and better, and they can only root for Georgetown to help their RPI.

Still Alive: Florida, Kentucky

Kentucky dismantled the Vols at home to keep their March hopes alive, but they have been very inconsistent throughout the season. A win over either LSU or Florida and a win in the SEC tournament can position the Wildcats to go dancing, even after an early season shocker from VMI.

Other

Locks: Memphis, Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler, Utah

Memphis is clearly the class of the "other" conferences, and Gonzaga just wrapped up its ninth consecutive league title. Butler should be fine as long as they can avoid any more conference slip-ups, and the win against Davidson should help out their seeding. Xavier has recently been struggling, but they did enough earlier this year to assure themselves as a lock.

Close to being in: Siena, UNLV, BYU, Dayton, Utah State

Siena scheduled tough this year, and although they didn't win any of their big games, their numbers look good, and they have done everything else they have needed to do in conference. A win against Northern Iowa doesn't hurt. Utah State has just suffered two losses, which, because of their weak numbers, put them on the bubble with the rest of the mid-majors.

Dayton is very close to becoming a lock. They just need to win the games they are supposed to against the bottom of the A-10, and that should be enough given their success from earlier this year.

Still Alive: UAB, Creighton, Davidson, St. Mary's

St. Mary's and Davidson boast two of the nation's best players in Stephen Curry and Patty Mills; however, because of recent injuries to both stars, the Wildcats and the Gaels have suffered losses that may hurt come Selection Sunday. If Patty Mills comes back for the WCC tournament, he can impress the committee and find the Gaels a spot.

Davidson might just have to rely on Stephen Curry taking over in SoCon's conference tournament even though they boast great numbers as a result of a challenging schedule that included Oklahoma and Duke. Although they won't admit it, the committee will do anything to get Stephen Curry back in the tournament

Beating The Bookies: College Basketball Picks January 7

I am taking a short break from my mid-term studies to make a few picks for tonight. It's been two weeks since I made last picks and hopefully I am not rusty.

Tennessee is looking for revenge against a Gonzaga team that dismantled them down in Orlando during Thanksgiving weekend. However, both teams are falling short of expectations as the Zags have lost four of five while Tennessee is still searching for their go to player after an injury to Wayne Chism. The Vols home winning streak ends tonight as Gonzaga will avoid there longest losing streak under the reign of Mark Few.

In a battle of North Carolina, Duke takes on Davidson in an effort to hold onto their number two ranking. Davidson, on the other hand, is looking to get that premier win that will assure them a spot in the national spotlight. Duke is a very good team that will win this game but there is no way Stephen Curry passes up an opportunity to shine on national television. This will be close, but a one man team can not beat a team as solid as Duke.

Gonzaga +4.5 1 Unit

Davidson +14 1 Unit

Season- 3-2 (60%) +1 Unit

Beating the Bookies: College Basketball Picks for Dec. 27

In order to avoid confusion with Andrew Kahn's Packing for Vegas, I have changed the name of my series from "Going to Vegas" to "Beating the Bookies."

Last Saturday, I started off my picking on a low note going, 1-2. Hopefully, today, I can get back some "units" by picking some winners.

Jack McClinton and the University of Miami take on a weak St. John's team today. Although Miami is away in this contest, McClinton is one of the nation's most underrated guards and the Red Storm have no answer to him.

Miami is a dangerous team that can work its way deep into March and they should have no trouble covering four points against one of the weakest teams in the Big East.

New Top 10 arrival Ohio State plays host to West Virginia in today's most anticipated matchup. Ohio State is a very young team that has not yet been challenged.

That changes today, as West Virginia is a team that could very well finish in the upper tier of the Big East. The Mountaineers can definitely put up the points to give Ohio State its first loss.

Miami (-4) 2 Units

West Virginia (+2 1/2) 1 Unit

Season: 1-2 (33%); -2 Units

The B/R College Football Playoff Semifinals

I now present you with the second-round matchups of the Bleacher Report College Football Playoff. Round One can be found here. The turnout in voting was not as large as I expected but hopefully we will put together more votes in determining the championship.

The scores of the first round games reflect the number of votes I received for each team.

Enjoy...

Round One Results:

1. Florida Gators 41

8. Utah Utes 7

4. Penn State Nittany Lions 31

5. Cincinnati Bearcats 24

3. USC Trojans 55

6. Virginia Tech Hokies 7

2. Oklahoma Sooners 48

7. Texas Longhorns 31

We had no upsets in the first round and the voters agreed with the computer's decision to put Oklahoma ahead of the Longhorns.

Let's go to Round Two:

1. Florida Gators

4. Penn State Nittany Lions

Florida rolls into the semifinal matchup after demolishing the dreams of Utah's perfect season.

2.Oklahoma Sooners

3.USC Trojans

Can Southern California stop Oklahoma's high-octane offense? Can Oklahoma get past the Trojans unstoppable defense?

Continue voting to choose our new National Championship game.

zags430@aol.com

Going To Vegas: CBB Picks and Spreads for December 20

I have talked to fellow B/R writer Andrew Kahn (#mce_temp_url#) and we have decided to turn his Packing For Vegas series into a competition. I will make picks for the days top college basketball games using spreads with "units" as the currency.

I hope you enjoy and make sure to check out Andrew's picks as well.

Today, the college basketball world is being treated to one of the most eventful days in recent memory. There are numerous games between top 25 teams and a pair of which are both top 10 match ups. Although it is usually smart to stay away from such high profile games, it can definitely make your time in front of the television a lot more enjoyable.

Duke takes on Xavier today in the swamps of New Jersey and oddsmakers have Duke as a six point favorite. Duke is too talented for the Atlantic 10 Musketeers and they should not have any trouble giving Xavier it's first loss.

The Michigan State Spartans have had a slow start to what was supposed to be a Final Four season. I am not counting them out but they already have two losses in this young season including a dismantling from UNC. Texas, on the other hand, has also suffered one defeat, however, it was a thriller to the Luke Harangody and the Irish and they rebounded nicely with a victory over the young Bruins of Westwood. I like the 'horns to cover six and a half against a struggling Michigan Sate.

The Game of the Week—Gonzaga hosts the University of Connecticut in the 3rd annual Battle of Seattle in a rematch of last years thriller in Boston. Both Gonzaga and Uconn are chock full o' players each rolling at least eight deep.

Gonzaga may have the edge at the one and two but there key to victory is how Austin Daye and Josh Heytvelt will match ups with the Huskies bigs, Hasheem Thabeet and Jeff Adrien. Heytvelt was able to shutdown Tyler Hansboroguh in New York two years ago and if he can match that performance on Saturday, I like Gonzaga to cover three and a half.

Gonzaga vs. Connecticut- -3.5 2 Unit

Michigan State vs. Texas- -6.5 1 Unit

Xavier vs. Duke- -6 1 Unit

The B/R College Football Playoff Round One

In honor of the mockery that is the BCS, I have taken the initiative to put together an eight-team playoff.

The Rules:

The winner of each "BCS" conference is awarded an automatic bid into the tournament and two "at large" programs are selected. The teams play at neutral sites for each game as they have been doing in the current bowl process.

Of course teams will still be left out, but hey, at least we can see what would happen if the BCS chose to listen to America including President-elect Obama.

The games will be decided by a Bleacher Report vote.

My email is zags430@aol.com. Please attach a link to your profile in the email and put B/R Playoff as the subject.

The Bracket:

1. Florida Gators

8. Utah Utes

The high-powered offense of the Florida Gators will have to avoid a misstep against a potential party crasher.

4. Penn State Nittany Lions

5. Cincinnati Bearcats

JoePa's team will look to advance against a sound Bearcats program that benefited from the Big East's automatic bid.

3.USC Trojans

6. Virginia Tech Hokies

USC will try to prove that one fluke loss early in the season shouldn't determine whether they are the best program in the country.

2. Oklahoma Sooners

7. Texas Longhorns

A rematch of the Red River shootout will determine who should be representing the Big 12 as the automatic selection.

Please only one vote per person.

Send it to as many people as possible.

Breaking Down The Old Spice Classic

Arguably the strongest preseason tournament of the 2008-2009 season, the Old Spice Classic has a potential of seven tournament teams (I am leaving out Wichita State). If you have any free time over the weekend, this is the tournament you don't want to miss.

With help from ESPN, the Old Spice Classic has replaced the Maui Invitational as the ultimate feast of basketball on Thanksgiving weekend.

First Round Matchups

Tennessee vs. Siena (Thursday, 12PM)

Bruce Pearl looks to lead his Vols past the Sweet 16 in March but first, will have to focus all of his attention to last years sweetheart in this excellent first round matchup.

Wichita State vs. Georgetown (Thursday, 2PM)

Greg Monroe and the Hoyas should have no trouble disposing of the weakest team in Orlando. However, come second round, they will need to bring their A game.

Maryland vs. Michigan State (Thursday, 7PM)

Tom Izzo has one of his most talented teams in recent memory and if someone can step up to replace Drew Neitzel, the Spartans are just as dangerous as any team in the country,

Oklahoma State vs. Gonzaga (Thursday, 9PM)

Speaking of dangerous, Mark Few has his most talented team ever in Spokane and this year, he is seeking that elusive Final Four berth.

Predictions

Second Round

Siena vs. Georgetown

I know its a stretch but the Saints return everyone from a team that ripped Vandy in the opening round. However, the fun ends here as Georgetown has to much depth and talent to go down in the semis. It will be closer than you think.

Gonzaga vs. Michigan State

The best potential matchup of the tournament brings together two up tempo squads both led by excellent coaches in Mark Few and Tom Izzo. If the Zags are able to come together as team, they have enough talent to overcome the Spartans.

Finals

Gonzaga vs. Georgetown

Gonzaga takes its talent and capitalizes on the experience they have with national attention. Georgetown will slow down the fast pace of the Bulldogs but on the offensive end, they will not have much of a response. The Zags bring the trophy back to the Kennel.

Consolation

Michigan State vs. Siena

Michigan State ends Sienas bid to take down another big time oppenent. Siena will still be a dangerous team to play come March.

Players to Watch

Austin Daye, Gonzaga

The 6-foot-11 sophomore draws similarities to Kevin Durant of Texas. Gonzaga's success will hinge on his ability to help Josh Heytvelt dominate the paint.

Greg Monroe, Georgetown

The highly recruited freshman will need to come up big on the offensive end if the Hoyas expect big things in Orlando.

Kenny Hasbrouck, Siena

The Saint's strongest player will be key to the success Siena hopes to have in 2008-2009. If he can repeat the 30-point performance he had in the first round against Vanderbilt, Siena will surely have an opportunity to be this years Davidson.

Watch it over Thanksgiving weekend on ESPN and ESPN2.

Storylines for the 2008-2009 College Basketball Season: Part One

Can you believe it Baby?

The season is finally here, and I am here to break down some of this year's top storylines.

Is Davidson here to stay?

Davidson charmed the hearts of college basketball fans all over the country when they were able to reach the Elite Eight after a thrilling tournament run. Stephen Curry is back and is looking to lead his Wildcats back to last year's glory.

However, things may be tougher come March, as Bob McKillop lost arguably the country's premier point guard in Jason Richards. Curry will now take over at the point and will have to learn to be more of a playmaker than a scorer. If he can do that, the Wildcats will be able to accomplish more than just a conference title.

Will UNC run the table?

What other team can say they have a returning player of the year? Tyler Hansbrough is back, and so is the core of a team that reached last year's Final Four. If the Tar Heels can get through Maui without a loss, they should be flying high all they way into ACC play.

Once they get there, the only teams that have the talent to knock them off in conference play should be Duke and the up and coming Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. The Heels have the pure talent to go unbeaten, but they are sure to hit a few bumps early, especially if Hansbrough's ankle injury is serious.

Will Gonzaga finally make the Final Four?

After two years of postseason disappointment, Gonzaga is looking to improve on what Mark Few calls his most talented team yet. That includes teams that had players such as Adam Morrison, Blake Stepp, and Dan Dickau.

They certainly have the depth and athleticism to do so. According to many draft websites, the Bulldogs have a potential six draft picks in the next two years. If they are going to do it, however, it has to be this year, as after the season they lose Micah Downs, Josh Heytvelt, and most importantly, playmaker Jeremy Pargo to graduation.

If Mark Few's squad can come together as a team, there is no reason that the Bulldogs shouldn't be among the top four teams in the nation.

Hopefully, once the season begins, we can turn this into a voting process from all Bleacher Creatures.

Top 10 Worst Sports Franchises

10. Denver Nuggets (NBA)

Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson are trying to bring Denver its first NBA title. Since their birth, the Nuggets have only won one conference title and that came in the ABA. Today, it is hard to classify them as a weak franchise, but history says otherwise.

9. Sacramento Kings (NBA)

Their one NBA title came over 60 years ago. That was when they were in Rochester. The organization has moved five times and nothing seems to be working. Their jerseys are also some of the ugliest in sports.

8. Texas Rangers (MLB)

At times, they are able to put up a ridiculous amount of runs, but that does not matter if you don't have pitching...ever. Not only can they never pitch, their offense always underachieves.

7. Boston Bruins (NHL)

Even though they are an original six team, they had a span of 30 years without a playoff appearance. They have not won a cup in 40 years, and prior to 1970 it took 30 years for the Bruins to bring a championship back to Boston.

6. Arizona Cardinals (NFL)

Recently, the Cardinals have seemed to compete. At least a little bit. Arizona only has four playoff appearances in their history, which lands them a spot on the list of mediocrity.

5. Los Angeles Clippers (NBA)

The second NBA team in Los Angeles and one that I find hard to believe still exists. They always let their good players go and they have never even won a division championship.

4. Memphis/Vancouver Grizzlies (NBA)

Most of the time, they are already eliminated by Jan. 1. They were bad in Canada and things didn't change when they came to the United States. Even worse, they recently got rid of the one player who had the opportunity to turn things around.

3. Colorado Rockies (MLB)

They finally made it to the promised land but came up short of a championship. However, they have retaken their spot as a basement dweller and that doesn't look to change anytime soon.

2. Kansas City Royals (MLB)

The Royals are averaging over 90 losses per season and they have recorded just one winning season in the last 15 years. One can only attribute their lack of success to a fear of good talent.

1. Detroit Lions (NFL)

One playoff win in their existence and they are not a recent addition to the league. The only bright spot in this franchise's history came with the few years in which fans could watch Barry Sanders in the backfield.

The Lions never seem to compete and they constantly turn talented athletes into poor performers. Fans in Motown should stick to the Red Wings, as the Lions won't be getting better anytime soon.

Will Gonzaga Finally Make The Final Four

After another disappointing loss in the first round of the 2008 NCAA tournament, Gonzaga coach Mark Few believes the Zags have their best team ever.

Although the Bulldogs lose their senior leader in David Pendergraft, they return numerous potential weapons that can make them a dangerous team come March. Point guard Jeremy Pargo leads the Zags who return two other seniors along with a core of young talent.

After testing the draft waters, Jeremy Pargo chose to ride out one more year as a college student. Not only will the Bulldogs feel the effects in their game play, Pargo has the opportunity to showcase his talent and boost his draft stock in 2009.

Two other seniors, former Jayhawk Micah Downs and center Josh Heytvelt will have to play major roles if Gonzaga hopes to make into April. While Micah Downs quietly does his work, Josh Heytvelt needs to return to his pre-arrest form. If he can do that, he will be able to join Pargo in the upcoming draft.

Gonzaga also has some younger talent. Matt Bouldin and Austin Daye are two other potential draft picks who will take on increased roles, especially in Mark Few's fast paced offense. Austin Daye, who was a top 20 recruit in 2007, is one of Few's favorite players, who if he lives up to his hype, has the opportunity to be Spokane's next Adam Morrison.

Similar to many other seasons, Gonzaga brings in another strong recruiting class. With the talent Gonzaga has, the freshmen may not jump into have starting roles, but for Gonzaga to win, they will need to perform, especially towards the end of the season.

Every year, college basketball fans look forward to seeing who Gonzaga is lined up to play. Due to its typically weak conference (although not this year), Mark Few tries to attract many of the nations premier programs in order to gain national attention. This year, Gonzaga may have its most difficult schedule yet as they face twelve returning March Madness teams.

Gonzaga plays Memphis, Connecticut, Tennessee, Arizona, and conference members St. Marys and San Diego. The Bulldogs are also part of one of the strongest Thanksgiving tournaments in recent memory, The Old Spice Classic which include Georgetown, The Vols, Michigan State and recent upstart Siena.

Unlike many other years in the past, the WCC boasts three teams participating in March Madness. Gonzaga, who has normally been the class of the conference, is now not alone in the Top 25. According to ESPN's preseason Top 25, both the Zags and St. Mary's are two of the nations top programs while San Diego is not far behind.

Gonzaga has the potential to be a final four team; however, they have to overcome the hump that the first round has thrust at the them in recent years. If the Zags are able to hit stride in March, no team in the country is going to want to play them and Mark Few will finally have the opportunity to bring a National Championship to Spokane.

Where Will the Big Ten Teams Finish?

Illinois: After a surprise trip to the Rose Bowl last season, football is exciting in Champaign. The win in Columbus was no fluke, and the Fighting Illini will want to be back for more in their 2008 campaign.

Although the loss of star running back Rashard Mendenhall may hurt the running game, Juice Williams has matured into a balanced QB who will be able to lead Illinois into a bowl game in 2009.

Finish: Second

Indiana: Last season's bowl game was a success, but don't count on anything special happening in Bloomington. The Hoosiers will be hurt on the offensive end with the loss of wide receiver James Hardy, who made an early departure to the NFL.

The only bright spot of the 2008 season is the absence of Michigan and Ohio State from the schedule. They held the Hoosiers to a combined six points in 2007.

Finish: Ninth

Iowa: The 2008 will not be a positive one for the Hawkeyes. Just five years ago, Iowa was one of the nation's premier programs on par with perennial powerhouse such as USC and fellow conference mates Ohio State.

However, something went wrong, and the Hawkeyes have not been able to recapture the glory in Iowa City. Iowa does not have a difficult non-conference schedule, so a bowl game may be in reach in the 2008 campaign.

Finish: Fifth

Michigan: Let's face it. This will be a "refurnishing" year for the folks from Ann Arbor. They are by no means rebuilding as they have many blue chip players that programs across the country would kill for.

Rich Rodriguez will just need a year to move in his signature "spread" offense that worked for years down in Morgantown. A conference championship may be asking too much from the Wolverines, but expect them to be able to compete with any team in the nation.

Finish: Fourth

Michigan State: Like Indiana, the Spartans will have a tough time after losing their prized wide receiver to the NFL. In 2007, Devin Thomas was an 1,000 yard receiver as well as the Big Ten's all time leader in kick return yards (1,135).

Michigan State has no wide receiver capable of replacing him and with no promises around the running and passing game, the Spartans offense will the flair experienced of prior seasons.

Add this to a tough non-conference schedule which includes Cal and Notre Dame, the upcoming season doesn't look too bright in East Lansing.

Finish: Eighth

Minnesota: Northwestern is no longer the weakest team in the conference. After losing many pieces of an already dismal one-win team the Gophers really have nothing to look forward to in the 2008 season.

The only bright spot is the rivals.com rated No. 17 recruiting class in the country. Minnesota might as well wait until 2009, when they welcome a new 50,000-seat outdoor stadium and have time to add another strong recruiting class.

Finish: 11th

Northwestern: After beating Illinois in the 2007 regular season finale, Northwestern might be able to make some noise among the elite members of the conference. If the Wildcats can work out their fourth-quarter kinks, they will be able to emerge victorious in many competitive games.

If their defense can hold its own, running back Tyrell Sutton can lead the offense and bring a bowl game back to Evanston.

Finish-10th

Ohio State: Two National Championship Games. Zero victories. The Buckeyes only have one thing on their mind in 2008. To make it to that National Championship game, and to win it.

Anything else will be a bust for Jim Tressel's squad. Led by Beanie Wells on offense and James Laurinaitis on defense, there are no holes on either side of the ball.

Expect the Buckeyes to make it back to the last game of the season. Don't forget the addition of quarterback threat, Terrelle Pryor, who chose Columbus over Ann Arbor.

Finish: First

Penn State: In what could be Joe Paterno's last year as Penn State's coach, the Nittany Lions may have trouble matching their nine-win campaign from the 2007 season.

Penn State's defense is back and almost as strong as ever. However, they lack a sturdy quarterback to fill the shoes of Anthony Morelli.

If they can fill that position, which will be extremely difficult, they can compete with anybody in the conference.

Finish: Seventh

Purdue: If the Boilermakers defense can step up in 2008, they will be able to shock the conference along with the entire country. Purdue boasts arguably the best quarterback in the Big Ten in Curtis Painter and their backfield is almost as impressive.

However, they are shallow at the wideout position after losing Painter's top two targets. College football fans should look forward to the showdown against Oregon which will be able to prove if the Boilermakers are contenders.

Finish: Sixth

Wisconsin: Madison is home to the nation's second-longest home winning streak. This brings importance, as their three toughest Big Ten opponents, Ohio St., Illinois and Penn State all travel Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers are consistent across the board and should be able to challenge the Buckeyes and the Illini for the conference title. First, they have to get by WAC power Fresno State.

If they can do that, as well as tackling the top Big Ten programs, they could be headed to Pasadena.

Finish: Third

Conference Winner: Ohio State

It would be great to see another team win the conference, but there is a reason the Buckeyes will be headed to their third straight national championship.

Player of the Year: Chris "Beanie" Wells

The strongest part of the strongest team in the country.

Freshman of the Year: Terrelle Pryor

The highly prized recruit will be felt throughout the state of Ohio

The NBA Draft Lottery: Lets Make It More Entertaining

It's been nearly a week since the NBA Draft lottery and it is definitely time for a change in the system. The Bulls, who had the ninth best chance, ended up winning the pick. Isn't the point of the lottery to help out the bad teams?

Here are some ideas that could help the bad teams, or others that could just be more entertaining than a random drawing. The Sonics are still one of the worst teams every year

•Play an NIT style tournament. Let the bad teams play out in a single elimination, winner takes first pick tournament. This would give us more games to watch with almost as much on the line.

•Have the two worst teams play. The winner gets the higher pick. Keep going for all playoff eliminated teams.

•A knockout tournament between a GM selected player from each team. Wouldn't it be great to see Jamal Crawford and Kevin Durant in the final round fighting for Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose?

•David Stern plays a round of darts blindfolded. Whatever team he hits gets the first pick.

•Have an actual ping pong ball lottery on television. Not behind the scenes. Let everyone see who comes out of the ping pong ball machine. Change the odds so it is only 100 balls. 1,000 is too many and you can't have .7 of a ball.

•Give it to the Knicks. They need the help.
