Rodney Wallace Makes His UFC Debut at the Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale

In the realm of mixed martial arts, there is one show, one name, one leader that truly sets the bar for the rest of the sport. Very few choose a career as a cage-fighter without the ultimate goal of reaching this pinnacle.

Rodney "Sho Nuff" Wallace has earned his chance to dance on the biggest stage in the sport. His high level of talent, dedication, success, and some sharp management have earned him a contract offer to fight for the UFC.

Wallace fights at 205 and carries a record of 9-0. Looking at Wallace's body of work thus far, the UFC will not be disappointed in their decision to sign him.

He represents the new era of MMA. Not unlike the blueprint made famous by Georges St. Pierre, Wallace is dangerous in multiple facets of the fight game.

Not just any fighter makes it to the UFC. It does not happen overnight. Only the best the sport has to offer are given the opportunity to compete, to bring their brand of fight to the world.

Only the best can say they fight for the UFC. Rodney Wallace can now say that with pride. He makes his UFC debut on December 5th at the Ultimate Fighter 10 Heavyweights Finale.

He is diving into the fires against a dangerous opponent immediately.

Some fighters ease their way into competition in the UFC. They fight other up and comers trying to make a name for themselves. Or in many cases they break in through The Ultimate Fighter.

Sometimes though, a fighter debuts against a known competitor right out of the gates. Former WEC LHW Champion Brian "The All American" Stann is Wallace's first test in the Octagon.

While Brian Stann is not necessarily elite in the LHW realm, he is a game and very dangerous competitor. He has a lot of pride in being a veteran U.S. Marine. His fights are a tribute to his brothers and sisters in uniform. This drives him to be an aggressive, and fierce warrior.

His ground game leaves a bit to be desired but he is capable of ending a fight early with vicious striking. The man has no fear and attacks moving forward more often than not. A dangerous fighter without a doubt.

Wallace will have his hands full. He will need to weather a storm to impose his game. Surely he is prepared to do that. This is his chance to shine.

Rodney Wallace may not be a household name but the man is no slouch in this industry. There is plenty of fight footage displaying Wallace's striking and ground prowess.

He utilizes a combination of seamless grappling and precision striking to pick his opponent apart. His attack varies based on what his opponent does.

He has throws, submissions, knockout power, speed, agility, this fighter is the whole package. Add to that a killer instinct, and you have a recipe for success.

His ability to adapt is very impressive. A great example of Wallace's diversity would be his fights at Vendetta Fighting Championships. There he showed strength in every facet of the game, eventually winning the tournament. He won three fights in one night, two submissions and one decision.

What is an exciting aspect to Wallace's debut against Stann is the fact that Stann is a known name in the sport, with a reputation as a dangerous fighter.

If Wallace is able to defeat Stann, it instantly displays his ability to compete with a man who was a champion not that long ago. Stann may not have set any title defense records, but a champ is a champ.

Regardless of how the fight goes, Wallace will have his opportunity to show what he can do against the former WEC champ. It should be very fun to watch.

With Fight Legion Inc. managing him, a great sponsor like hurtsbad.com, and Team R.O.C. in his corner, Rodney is in good hands. He has a world of potential in front of him.

Look for him to make a splash in the big kid section of the pool real soon.

Wanderlei Takes in Some Great Fights At Tuff-N-Uff's Future Stars of MMA

Tuff-N-Uff broke their own mold this past Friday night. The official results are in and they are impressive. With superstars and MMA moguls in attendance, the warriors put on a fine display of MMA.

With Pride and UFC legend Wanderlei Silva sitting cage side, as well as WEC President Reed Harris looking on, these mixed martial artists ended fights with a consistency that really left an impression.

Imagine for a moment as an amateur fighter how it must feel to make your walk to the ring, you take your spot in your corner, you look down into the front row and who do you see?

None other than "Axe Murderer" Silva. As if that is not inspiring enough, you also see Reed Harris, the equivalent of Dana White to the WEC. These fighters could realistically be fighting for him some day.

What an absolute honor for these young fighters, imagine the drive to perform that they felt with these very important MMA people looking on as they performed their art.

Perform they did, these fighters lit it up.

14 fights, four submissions, seven TKO victories, and three decisions. Of the 11 fights ended early, eight were ended in the first round. Now that is an explosive night of fights.

Wanderlei and Reed must have been riveted to see such potential at the amateur level of the sport.

While there were many fights that ended early, it is important to mention the three hard fought battles that went the distance too. These fights were not won easily and deserve their due also.

One of which was the main event between amateur female mixed martial artists LaTasha Marzolla vs. Kate McGray . In a hard fought battle that showed heart and gameness from each warrior, Marzolla emerged the victor.

In a unanimous decision Marzolla overpowered McGray with superior strength, grappling, and striking. This was not for lack of McGray's honorable attempts to stop the attack.

McGray put up a great fight and tested Marzolla's chin on more than one occasion. In the end, Marzolla was just too strong and durable as she outlasted the attacks of her opponent and took the edge, improving her record to 2—0 as an amateur.

Tuff-N-Uff is very proud of the show they put on Friday night, and they should be. When you bring in some of the most highly trained talent in the sport, you get quality amateur MMA.

“We feel it is our mission to bring the state of amateur MMA to the next level," Tuff-N-Uff productions President Barry Meyer said. "We are raising the bar for the fighters, as well as ourselves on the show production side. Our last event clearly proved that we are growing and improving simultaneously.”

When you have the support of people like Randy Couture and Wanderlei Silva you know your doing something right in the realm of mixed martial arts. And the reputation does not stop at the super stars.

Many fighters and components of the sport appreciate this promotion for who they are and what they do. Simply put, they are a priceless addition to the careers of young fighters fortunate enough to compete for them.

Visit their website to view not only more information on their efforts but some footage of the actual fights also. If you do visit the site, be sure to take a moment to take in the short video of the ring girl contest , if you're into that sort of thing. Enjoy fight fans!

The official results are as follows:

Chris Alvanado defeated Colt “45” Bowler by unanimous decision

Marcus Aven defeated Eric Center by submission (armbar), round 1

Jordan Wright defeated Justin Rote by submission (triangle choke), round 1

Tommy Gavin defeated Rob Isenor by submission (arm triangle choke), round 1

Joden Seiders defeated Chris Holiday by TKO (strikes), round 1

Tim Bowman defeated Dan McCoy by TKO (strikes), round 1

Edmond Xhelili defeated Brandon Sheard by TKO (strikes), round 2

Evva Johnson defeated Kristen Mason by submission (armbar), round 1

Victor Henry defeated Cory Jeffers by TKO (Jeffers was unable to answer the bell for round 3)

Eddie Jackson defeated Jesse Bowler by TKO (strikes), round 1

Joe Ray defeated P.J. Dombrowski by TKO (strikes), round 1

Cory Turner defeated Anthony Lee by TKO, round 3

Gor Mnatsakanyan defeated Chris Brady by unanimous decision

LaTasha Marzolla defeated Kate McGray by unanimous decision

LaTasha Marzolla: Playboy's Knockout Fighting at Tuff-N-Uff 11/27

With women's MMA steadily on the rise, many aspiring female mixed martial artists are seeing new doors open. Those doors are providing more opportunities as the sport evolves and further accepts their efforts to prove they belong.

They certainly do belong, that much is already apparent.

With the efforts of gentlemen like Barry and Jeff Meyer, President and Vice President respectively of Tuff-N-Uff Amateur Fighting Championships, women's MMA has found a respectable, high profile promotion to support their ascent in the sport.

Just last July, Tuff-N-Uff put on the first ever all female fight card, Tuff Girls, in Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world. This groundbreaking event was an amazing show that really displayed how exciting women's MMA can be.

Tuff-N-Uff is proud to say that world class female fighter Gina Carano fought for them in her early years as an amateur. Tuff-N-Uff is honored to have helped Carano establish herself under their banner. Now they look to provide the venue for another rising amateur fighter to make her mark on the sport.

They are showcasing another stunning yet equally dangerous knockout, all puns intended there. LaTasha Marzolla (1-0), the 2004 Playboy Special Edition Playmate of the Year, will be competing in her second MMA bout November 27th. Fighting out of Xtreme Couture, Marzolla will square off with Kate Mcgray; both are undefeated as amateurs.

LaTasha has surrounded herself with some of the greatest fighters in the sport at Xtreme Couture. Training there she will continue to hone what is already a well seasoned fighting career.

Latasha started out training under Master Toddy in kickboxing. Her record as a kickboxer is 9-3 so she is no newcomer to combat sports. Her experience shines through in her efforts as an amateur mixed martial artist.

Her first fight in MMA also took place with Tuff-N-Uff against a fighter named Christy Tada whom she stopped in the first round by TKO.

“Latasha’s fight against Christy is the second most viewed video on Tuff-N-Uff’s YouTube channel and has been featured on websites all over the world,” said Jeff Meyer. “We’re excited to help her pursue her dream of becoming a future star in the sport of MMA. She is funny and sweet outside of the ring but has proven to be more than serious inside of it.”

It should be interesting to watch her career progress further as she trains at one of the best gyms in the world as she already has a solid background in full contact fighting. Not to mention a highly attentive fan base from her early years as a model for the most prestigious gentleman's magazine in the world.

Her recognizable name and her high profile MMA affiliations will help her not only make her own way in the sport but also leave in her wake reinforcement of the fact that female fighters are here to stay, and plan on doing some damage.

Point being if Marzolla can find success in this sport, not unlike Carano's or even Cyborg's, it will help to open doors for more women to compete in this fast moving sport. Their success lends itself to the evolution of MMA for the better.

This is not the only fight taking place on November 27th at the Orleans Hotel and Casino. Tuff-N-Uff, as always, intends to blow away their sure to be packed house with top notch fighters trained at some of the best camps in the world. It is not uncommon to see fighters from Wand Fight Team, Xtreme Couture, or many other prestigious gyms competing for the Meyer brothers.

There is nothing quite like attending one of these events. Fights are fights, and shows are shows; many are high quality and very entertaining. All that said, nothing at all compares with a Tuff-N-Uff event.

There aren't many amateur events that will bring in MMA moguls like UFC President Dana White, or living legend Randy Couture. It is not often that you will bump into Vitor Belfort on your way to buy a T-Shirt at a smaller event like this one. Another great supporter, both as fan and coach, is Wanderlei Silva.

No one attending one of these shows should be the least bit surprised to see one of these icons sitting across the venue, or even in the hallway outside.

Their support of this promotion is all the proof one needs to display the true quality and integrity of the events. Barry and Jeff work very hard to bring the best they possibly can to fight fans in the Las Vegas area. If you're not local to Vegas, you can always log on to their website and check out replay footage of the fights after they take place.

At the end of the day, Tuff-N-Uff is building the future of this sport by combining integrity with entertainment, quality with accessibility, and excitement with promise.

If ever you're able to catch one of their events, don't miss the chance. If you're not able to attend, support their efforts by checking out their site. There is more than one exciting match there just waiting to entertain you.

An Underutilized Gesture in Life: The Tapout

In the fight game, for many fighters, there comes a point in a match where they feel they can not press on any longer. They signify their willingness to end a fight with a simple gesture: the tapout.

Whether it be fear of loss of limb, or simply to avoid further pain and discomfort at the hands of their opponent, they tap to indicate that they prefer the fight cease at that given moment.

The tapout saves many fighters many ailments. No sooner than they begin to tap, the official rushes to their aid to save them any further punishment at the hands of their adversary.

After sitting around thinking about the effectiveness of the tapout, I began to wonder why we don't use the tapout in more areas of life? Imagine for a moment if you will, a world that responded to tapping as a universal sign that whatever it is that is going on would end.

No means the same thing all over the world, maybe a tapout should, too.

How useful would a tapout be, say, in a situation with a loved one. Say your lady has decided to set up a trap that includes asking you what you think of what she's wearing tonight, even though she has already made up her mind to change regardless of what you say.

It would go a little something like this: "Honey, how do I look in this?" "Wow, you look great!" might be a response a man might give. "Look how big this makes my butt look, were you even looking at me?" the little lady might respond. Now this is the crossroads, no answer is correct from this point forward, I assure you.

And for the record, a big butt is not a detriment by default, let's be honest here, folks. The pressure is mounting to come up with a righteous and thoughtful response.

Tapout!

In rushes Herb Dean to save the man from further abuse and destruction, he waves his hands over his head. and there you have it, end of discussion. A man is saved from what was surely a situation that could have turned ugly very quick.

Love is not the only place where a tapout could be utilized. How about our jobs? Your boss approaches you about about some minuscule issue that really does not warrant much attention at all.

Even still, your boss must "manage" your shortcomings and throw them up in your face to make themselves feel more important. Honestly, this is grounds to have a point taken away, but the point system is a discussion for another article.

The boss begins to rant about how you should really aspire to be more like them, perfect in every way. As your boss proceeds to tell all about why your performance is not up to snuff, even though you slam dunked the job you were doing, you calmly look them right in the eyes, extend your hand, and you tap.

Steve Mazzagatti has seen enough, there is no need for you to endure further abuse in this situation; he rushes to your aid, shoves the boss back in their corner, and the issue is over. You're free to go on about your day without the pointless nagging that surely would have continued without a tap.

You're driving your bad ass, tricked out ride at approximately too friggin' fast for your own safety. In your rear view mirror you note the flashing of blue and red lights. This is indicative of your need to pull over and face the music for your poor judgement.

Mr. "I got picked on in high school, but now I have a gun and you're going to give me respect regardless of if you like it or not," taps on your window with his Desert Eagle. You roll your window down and he asks, "Do you now how fast you were going, boy?"

Your answer: "Not fast enough, obviously; you were able to catch up to me."

He does not approve and asks you to step out of the vehicle. You're on your way to the after party (more on this later) and you just don't have time to be messing with ole Haas this evening. You tapout. Dan Merogliotta is not going to allow this to continue any further. Mr. caterpillar mustache is going to have to find someone else to bother this evening and you're free to go.

Your friend is moving. We all love to help our friends out, but there are certain aspects to friendship that are not as enjoyable as others. Your buddy calls you up and asks what you're doing this weekend. Unsuspecting of a possible move, you answer is "nothing." "Great!" your friend replies, "Can you help me move?" Now had you known he was moving, you could have come up with a great excuse given a little time to think about it.

His cunning approach has you staring forward like a deer in headlights; got to think quick, how can you get out of this? You may not be doing anything this weekend, but the last thing you want to do is spend all day in a wrestling match with couches and another person's mattresses. I don't know about you, but I'm particular to my own dust mites, thank you very much.

So you do what any person would do in a hopeless situation you can not escape. You tapout. Big John McCarthy jumps between the two of you, and it is all over. Your obligation is immediately relieved by a simple tapout, very nice and not a moment too soon. Now your weekend is once again yours. Now you can sit around and play Modern Warfare and eat Ramen noodles all weekend long, without interruption.

These are but a few examples of points in life where we might wish we had the option to tapout and move on to something more enjoyable, like the after party. Hey, win, lose, or draw, there is always an after party. Why not make it mandatory after every situation resolved by tapout.

So I call on my fellow MMA enthusiasts to help me implement this highly useful tool in our everyday lives. The first time you do it, they may look at you strange, but eventually they will get the picture. And remember the structure here people, obnoxious situation, tapout, after party.

Anytime one taps, go have a beer shortly there after. Let me know how this works out for you. Feel free to leave any further tapout worthy examples in the comment section below; these are but a few.

And now, folks, I tap!

Brock Lesnar's Illness Good Enough For Mainstream Media To Report

Please pardon me while I go on a rare emotionally charged rant regarding the absolute disregard mainstream media has for the sport of MMA. Until something terrible or negative happens in the sport that is.

So by now everyone has heard UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar has an intestinal issue that will sideline the champ for an undisclosed period of time if not end his fighting career.

More than likely you heard this first on some dedicated MMA forum or website, one of the true supporters of MMA in the realm of sports reporting; the heartbeat of the sport if you will.

The last time an MMA article made the front page on MSN's Fox Sports section was months ago. Suffice to say they do not have the interest or the knowledge to truly cover the sport, nor do they possess the desire to become involved.

They prefer to subcontract smaller more knowledgeable websites to do their talking and reporting for them. While this opens doors for aspiring journalists, it is a slap in the face to a growing sport.

They aren't going to waste one penny covering the sport of MMA, they will let the passionate fans themselves tell the story for free. MMA is just not worthy of their attention apparently;sad but true.

What they do have is a nose for the news, in the case of MMA, bad news is the only news they are willing to report. Think back for a moment and attempt to recall the only MMA stories that were truly covered by the top media outlets and displayed on their front page.

We are not talking the MMA section of this or that site,we are talking up front where they put the real sports news that is taking place from day to day.

A few choice issues come to mind. A UFC fighter runs from the law after losing his title and a poor women lost her unborn child after the chase caused multiple accidents, never mind that the chase had nothing to do with the unfortunate miscarriage.

Some UFC hippy runs off in the desert and dies due to exposure to the elements, who are these UFC fighters, a bunch of weirdos?

How about the big boss of all MMA and his derogatory, vulgarity laden tirade about a certain high profile MMA reporter? That was so worthy of front page news that the biggest sports reporters chose to stand up and take note, as well as share their obviously condescending opinions on exactly why this sport will not succeed.

The sport wasn't worth their attention any other time, but on that day, they got on their soap boxes.

Their opinions of a mistake in the sport are obviously more important than covering the sport in the first place otherwise they might have more to talk about than Dana White and his antics.

Last but not least, we have the tragic news that Lesnar's very lucrative and potentially historic career may be coming to its end prematurely. Now that will get people reading about MMA;a champ retiring too soon due to a tragic illness, that's front page stuff right there.

Never-mind the multitude of good that comes from this sport. Never-mind the efforts of the Xtreme Couture GI Foundation and the fundraiser they did last month to support GIs transitioning back home, not a peep from the media on that one.

Never-mind an MMA fighter overseas that jumped into freezing water to pull a child out of a car. Never-mind the UFC and their efforts to create a show called Fight For The Troops, or the UFC fighter who thwarted not only his own mugging in Las Vegas but rushed to the aid of another person also being mugged by the same people, none of that is newsworthy.

But the NFL and their efforts to support the troops gets a full page spread talking about their noble efforts. So what is the difference? One brutal sport gets put on a pedestal, and another brutal sport gets brushed under the rug. Both made great efforts to do good for our soldiers

Lest we forget there is actually a sport taking place amidst all the good that comes out of MMA. How dare we expect mainstream media coverage of the events themselves. No, we should be happy that any time a tragedy or mistake takes place that we get our air time then.

Its up to you and I to take the reigns and guide the perception of this sport. Lord knows if we leave it up to the big boys of sports reporting, all we will get is negativity.

Their disregard and contempt for this sport is starting to burn a little bit more every time one reads a bad news story on the front page of a site. If they cant cover the sport in its entirety, they should leave it alone all together.

There are more than enough willing and able amateur sports reporters just waiting to prove their worth as knowledgeable and effective reporters of this sport. Why let some disinterested, self important, self righteous sports journalist give his two cents.

If you and I hadn't told them, they wouldn't even know who Brock Lesnar is.

George Roop Puts on a Striking Clinic at Rage In the Cage

This past Saturday some folks in the Tucson Area stayed home to watch MMA legend Randy Couture prove he can still hang at UFC 105. Many people surely stayed home to watch Manny Pacquiao strengthen his own legend in the realm of the sweet science.

Locally there was NASCAR just up the road in Phoenix, and right at home in Tucson the beloved Wildcats were waging their own war.

With so much going on either in Tucson or just in general on Saturday, the odds were against a good turnout at Rage In The Cage at the Desert Diamond Casino.

It was nice to see that even with all that, in a strong display of support for the sport, local fight fans flooded the Diamond Center for a solid night of fights.

The strong turnout made for a great crowd and the fights had them all cheering. The first fight to really get them going took place between Justin Purcell and Andrew Perez. In a back and forth battle both men had their moments.

Purcell wound up on the wrong end of a hard fought war but shined brightly regardless. Perez won by unanimous decision surely based on superior striking.

The two showed a great deal of sportsmanship after the fight. They talked as if they had been training partners for years. This sport can never boast enough of this type of class.

It is more abundant than the critics of MMA might know.

The next fight was one that was sure to impress. Darin Kelly would square off with Andres Acuna. In Acuna's debut he decimated Jose Diaz with strikes in under 20 seconds. We are talking very cold and precise striking.

This fight with Kelly went much different for Acuna but it showed he had more than just quick and powerful hands; he has heart and endurance too.

Kelly really got the better of Acuna and stifled his striking game with an impressive display of grappling well into the third round. Acuna persevered and eventually got Kelly down, picked him up and slammed him hard to the mat.

The venue echoed and then erupted as Kelly rolled over unable to continue. Acuna mounted the cage and the crowd responded to their warrior. Very intense.

It is worth noting that after the fight Acuna mentioned that it was his father's birthday. Mr. Acuna, who was in attendance, must have been very proud to see his son overcome the adversity he faced in this fight and succeed before his eyes on his birthday.

That is the good stuff.

What took place next is really something that this writer will never forget. Suffice to say MMA is not for the weak of mind, body, or soul. It is one of the more physically demanding and taxing sports one could pursue.

That said, you can imagine ones surprise when amputee Matt Betzold marched to the cage. In an exciting entrance he entered the cage, removed his prosthetic leg, and began to bounce around the cage in a very impressive display showing everyone that he is not handicapped.

Across the cage from Betzold is one of the most impressive amateur fighters in the Tucson area. Freddie Lux is a young fighter who is well on his way to making his mark on MMA. He trains at 6th Street Gym under Drew Fickett. At first glance, it might have seemed a mismatch.

Betzold quieted any doubts immediately.

It took about 30 seconds for everyone in the room to forget this fighter was missing his left leg from the knee down. In a fine display of grappling he got Lux down and got on top and began to hit him. Later he maneuvered into position and made Lux defend a guillotine. At one point in the match he even took Lux down.

Lux, as stated before, is one of the top up-and-coming fighters in the area. He truly is a gifted fighter. It took every bit of his talents to defeat Betzold, and he emerged victorious after a difficult test.

His comment at the end of the fight was spot on when he credited Betzold for his heart for competing in this sport. Betzold showed more heart and desire at RITC then some fighters on the biggest stages have shown as professionals.

Lux showed local fans once again why he will be included in the next generation of well rounded fighters.

Speaking of next generation fighters, keep your ears peeled for Nick "NyQuil" Rhoads. This fighter has devastating hands and a ground game to boot. He put on an impressive display of precision striking followed up by a beautiful triangle to end the evening of Manny Guajardo.

In the main event of the evening, Matt Dell put his featherweight strap on the line against UFC veteran George Roop. In an absolutely dominating fashion, Roop pounded Dell for three rounds with a crisp and sharp striking game that came from every angle.

The combos were quick and landed flush, and the jabs were plenty. Leg kicks distracted one moment then the next they were cutting to the bone.

Roop put on one of the finest displays of combat this writer saw Saturday night, after Ross Pearson and of course Manny Pacquiao.

It took until 3:30 in the morning to watch every event, but it was worth it.

In the end RITC did what it always does. Roland Sarria brings in some great local talent for fight fans. The Desert Diamond provides one of the sharpest and intimate local venues and the service is top notch. It makes for a very enjoyable evening of MMA.

These fights and others from this card can be found at the RITC website in a few days.

Randy Couture Racing the Sands of Time To Remain Relevant

Almost 13 years ago, a talented, hungry, accomplished wrestler took his first steps into the Octagon. The wake he would leave in his path would forever change the sport of mixed martial arts.

When Randy “The Natural” Couture started his career, he began a journey that would have its peaks and valleys along the way. In both victory and defeat, Couture galvanized his reputation in the sport.

Sixteen wins and ten losses later, Randy is about to take on his 27th opponent in the sport he has called home for over a decade. Brandon Vera looks to seize this opportunity with Randy to regain his momentum in the sport.

As the end of his storied career comes into its twilight, many find themselves asking, will this be the last time we see this legend fight? At what point will “Captain America” hang up the gloves? Can he still remain relevant in this sport?

Relevant in MMA is a relative term. Relevant refers to whether or not he can he impact a division, or climb up the ladder and pursue a title. Another way of gauging relevance is by discussing the ability to draw viewers.

If there is one definitive answer in the question of Couture’s relevance it is in his ability to pull viewers. The perennial underdog, Randy has developed a sort of cult reputation for overcoming odds.

Even though that may be true, even the most hardcore of Couture fans must wonder how much longer can he compete at this level.

As said before, even in defeat Randy impresses his abilities upon his viewers. One need look no further than his showing against current heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Up until the knockout, Randy was giving Lesnar real trouble. He is always in the fight.

Fight fans love an underdog, especially one that not only defies the odds but time itself. Not many men approaching 48 years old would dare look at a fighter like Brandon Vera cross.

Randy intends to not only size Vera up but defeat the young challenger this Saturday night at UFC 105. If he cannot do as he intends to, it may signal the end of an era. If Randy falls this Saturday in Manchester, England, surely his time inside the Octagon will have come to an end.

Couture is currently riding a two fight losing streak. One more loss may prove fatal to his tenure as a fighter in the sport. Of course, a loss is not on Couture’s agenda. In fact, a loss is the furthest thing from Couture’s mind. If he has it his way, this fight will prove that he can still get it done in a young man’s sport.

If he is successful in his quest for victory at UFC 105, he will take one more step towards remaining relevant in the sport. One more victory would lead to at least one more chance to fight again.

With the prospects behind Vera as possible opponents it is hard to imagine Randy pulling off two or three consecutive victories to make his way to one last chance at UFC gold. Fighters like Rashad Evans, and maybe even Anderson Silva could stand in Couture’s path on the way to what is currently cemented around Lyoto Machida’s waist.

Either one of those fights would be a tall order, but the odds have failed to beat Couture before.

One thing is certain and cannot be questioned. Odds are not what guide this legend through this sport. What is written on paper does not dictate his fate. Age will not be the reason he retires. Randy will do as Randy does simple as that.

As long as “The Natural” believes that, he will continue to defy the skeptics, he will continue to smash the odds, and he will continue to remain relevant in this sport.

Even if the skeptics would count him out yet again.

Rage in the Cage Back at The Desert Diamond in Tucson November 14th

The time has come for another Rage in the Cage fight in Tucson Ariz. on Nov. 14. Together Roland Sarria and the Desert Diamond Casino are putting together another high profile event for fight fans in the desert.

Rage in the Cage has always boasted many well known fighters who got their start fighting for RITC and Mr. Sarria. Some notable competitors to fight for RITC have been current WEC title holder Jamie Varner, Joe Diesel Riggs, and TUF standout Efrain Escudero.

Another man who is no stranger to RITC is UFC veteran George Roop. George has left the UFC for now and is pursuing a title belt in the RITC featherweight division. He is set to square off with Matt Dell for that strap.

George is a local favorite in the Tucson area. He boasts local MMA clothing company Jitz as a sponsor and wears their gear with pride. The fans love him here, he supports local MMA, and the man just puts on a great fight. RITC is fortunate to have him back in their realm showcasing his fighting skills for local fight fans.

A fighter that many fans may not know about is Joe Yager. Yager is competing in only his third amateur fight on Saturday but his reputation precedes him if you can believe that.

Local MMA insiders tell me that Yager is the real deal, and with some training and cage seasoning, he will make an impression on this sport at heavyweight or light heavy if his goals come to fruition. And just between you and I, this gentleman is like a compact version of Brock Lesnar, it honestly could be his little brother, little being a relative term.

Another notable fighter competing at RITC is IFL veteran Joe West. West spent time under Don Frye as a Tucson Scorpion. West is no stranger to RITC either. He has made a name for himself, and also carries the appreciation of the local crowd for his stint representing Tucson on the big stage of MMA.

Overall, RITC is known for bringing not only exciting fights but getting local fight fans in touch with notable MMA figures. Last time out, I met Junie Browning walking to my car after the event. George Roop was just cruising around the venue shooting the breeze. Mike Whitehead was seen sharing his choice opinion with the athletic commission after a questionable stoppage. These are well known fighters who were very accessible.

It was quite an evening of outstanding fights and amazing introductions with fighters, gym owners, promoters, and event coordinators. RITC is a premier event in the southwest and this writer is looking forward to another amazing show. Keep your eyes peeled for a post-event wrap up that surely will be detailed with exciting finishes and bits and pieces of how it went down.

One thing is certain, you cant say a bad thing about the high profile venue and the service that the Desert Diamond has on display, Mr. Sarria has a tight grip on the local MMA community and his influence brings in some great fighters, if you combine the efforts of these two entities, you get an explosive, enjoyable, and entertaining MMA event.

If you're in the area, check this show out, you will not be disappointed. If you can't make the show, visit rageinthecage.com to view some video of previous events and this event shortly after it is completed.

Supporting regional MMA is one of the issues that gets overlooked in the big picture. The efforts of local fight fans drive the future of the sport by supporting MMA at the local level today. Do your part, support this sport.

Joe Yager: An Amateur Apex Heavyweight Evolving with MMA

The first time I saw Joe Yager I was at a fundraiser for a local gym called Apex MMA. Apex was showcasing some up-and-coming amateur talent for local fight fans, and I was honored to be invited as a guest.

There were many impressive fights and fighters. One fighter that really stuck out was Yager. The 28-year-old has a powerful frame I once described as being built like a Sherman tank, weighing in at 235 pounds.

This was not his first amateur fight, and it showed. When he started stalking his side of the cage, it was obvious he was comfortable. His opponent entered, both men were announced, and the battle commenced.

Yager used his size and strength to neutralize his opponent, doing an astonishing job of imposing his game. What was undeniable was his wrestling prowess. Very fluid and powerful. The outcome found him with his hand raised due to stoppage between rounds

The showing was impressive, so I jumped at the chance to speak with him.

Yager took a moment to share some thoughts about his background, his aspirations, and what it's like to train with a legend. Wrestling is a monumental part of Yager's life and his strength.

"Wrestling is my background," he said. "I've been involved in the sport since I was six years old.

"The guy that trained me in my wrestling is Randy Meyer. He's like a second dad to me. I spent a lot of weekends with that guy, traveling all around the country.

"I spent three seasons at Central Michigan University," Joe went on to state. "I started my senior year at Central Michigan, I had 42 matches, I was 36-6.

"I was the assistant wrestling coach to Joe Solorio at Pima Community College for three years, and I was the head coach for one season."

Wrestling has been the base for many an accomplished mixed martial artist. Yager will build on that foundation and is humble regarding his aspirations to improve.

"I have a solid base; I know how to get guys to the ground, and then it's finishing guys," he said. "That's something I'm learning every day. I spend a lot of time in two facets, as far as the striking and the Jiu-Jitsu end of it. Those are two areas where my knowledge is lacking. I haven't done it but six seven months, so I try to pick up as much as I can. I feel that I'm kind of like a sponge."

Insiders say he has been improving his hands and state that he "hits like a mule." Rumor has it he has stung more than one unsuspecting training partner with his striking.

The time has come for Yager to take another step in his MMA career. He has earned a chance to compete in a local MMA promotion on Nov. 14.

Rage in the Cage has booked Yager for RITC 137 at the Desert Diamond Casino. His opponent, Jed Jobe, will be the test. Jobe weighs in at 250 pounds.

When asked what he knew of his opponent, Yager had a great answer.

"As far as scouting, I don't even know who I'm fighting Saturday," Yager said. "It doesn't matter to me, man. I know I'm prepared; Joey and the guys at Apex have definitely got me ready."

He also talked about what it is like to compete at this stage in his young career.

"I can't tell you the adrenaline rush, it's great," he said. "I'm a thrill-seeker in that avenue, I guess. The first time I stepped in the cage, you look across the ring at that guy who wants to do the same thing you want to do which is take your head off. It makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It's an amazing feeling; it's a rush I can't explain."

Yager paid note to how fortunate he feels to be able to train with a certain living legend in the Tucson area.

"I never figured I'd ever be training with a legend like Don Frye," he said. "As a kid I used to watch him; I watched him in his first UFC (fight). It's amazing to be training with guys like that."

It is quite an honor, and of course Yager is making the most of it.

It will be a pleasure to be sitting cage-side watching him seize this opportunity and make of it what he will. There is a lot of potential in Yager. Even as an amateur, the whispers say he is a little bit different. Yager stands out to some who know this game well, and they speak nothing but praise for this fighter.

He hits a little bit harder than people might expect, he has a natural athletic ability, a top-shelf wrestling base, and some great people supporting and training him over at Apex MMA.

The sky is the limit for this fighter. The Southwest has really become a great place for an amateur mixed martial artist to flourish. Abundant are top-tier mixed martial artists training in Arizona. Add to that multiple promotions seeking strong young talent, and it gives Yager a great chance to put in his time learning this sport.

With the strong base he already has, and a year or two of learning in the cage, when this guy does get to the next level, he is going to turn some heads. I could have told you that much five months ago sweating my sitter off watching him fight at his local gym. I can't wait to watch him full contact with no pads under some air conditioning.

Taking a Moment to Pay Respect to Something Greater Than Sports

This is an article my daughter and I got together on for a school project she had to do last year. Her job was to do something in the community to brighten a veteran's day. I wrote the piece, and she edited it for me as well as made suggestions along the way. It is a powerful piece and one of the best articles I have written in my short time as a writer. As a sort of tradition, I will post this article every Veteran's day as I feel it will always brighten a veteran's day. It was the efforts of a fifth grader that inspired this, and I am very proud of it as is my daughter Caseya. Happy Veteran's day to all our hereos, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Athletics are based on competition. No matter the sport, the venue, or the athletes competing, the competition is based on opposing sides or teams, both hoping to conquer the other to taste the glory of victory, and avoid the bitter taste of defeat.

On this day, those victories, that glory, the sting of defeat, all take a knee.

Those emotions take a knee to pay homage to a greater glory, monumental victories, and heart wrenching defeats. Those feelings harbored by our beloved veterans command our attention and respect on this very important day.

Have you ever stood in front of the Vietnam Memorial? Powerful. You can feel the same power when you look a WWII veteran in the eye, extend your palm, and thank him for his sacrifices, and efforts.

A man in his early nineties, Colonel Edward Lindsay, accepted such a gesture from me, and I feel the better man for it today.

His eyes lit up like diamonds in the sun. That man has forgotten more about the importance of honor and dignity than I may ever know. He deserves more than my hand shake.

He deserves all of our gratitude.

There are many, many Mr. Lindsays out there deserving of our appreciation. The fact that this article is even being read is hard proof of the forward progress created at the cost of brave men and women who have sacrificed for our better good.

The open sharing of information and opinions, many would do away with such freedoms given the opportunity.

Not on Mr. Lindsay's watch.

The simple fact that we have the luxury of spending time pouring out opinions, spending hours following our beloved sports, living in a great country that truly indulges such luxuries, is all the incentive we need to honor these great veterans.

So many generations have endured and suffered in this country. All have their story to tell. There are the seasoned veterans like I mentioned before, there are our current day veterans of modern wars, and of course our brave men and women fighting for freedom elsewhere this very day.

I believe right or wrong, justified or not, these difficult times galvanize us. These experiences make us stronger as a people, this is how we emerge victorious and free in the face of adversity.

These sacrifices and victories allow for us to enjoy a ball game, catch a fight, see a race, or go to a football game no matter which football is the one for you.

We are passionate about our loves and loyalties. I hope we all take the time to share that with someone who stood before us to make it possible.

If you are one of the many proud honorable veterans I speak of, my hat is off, my knee is bent, I thank you.

Fedor Emelianenko: The Calm Amongst the Storm

The Last Emperor, Fedor Emelianenko, is quite a polarizing figure. Only the greatest of fighters can divide the MMA community and create a frenzy of analytics and opinions, even if both sides may never admit it.

The Fedor arguments are unique as they tend to break down more than just a liking for the fighter. Many of the discussions surrounding Fedor are regarding talent or ranking amongst the best in the sport.

Many will tell you Fedor has been less than ambitious in pursuing the best competition on the market. Those same people may tell you he actually is going out of his way to avoid it.

Others might tell you Fedor earned his crown when he was beating some of the best mixed martial artists the sport has known while in their primes. And they will state it with authority.

Some would love to break down for you the questionable striking ability of the Russian competitor. They may even go so far as to say his punching is sloppy and even lucky in some cases.

The counter to the accusation of sloppy stand up is to point to his victories that ended in knockouts or opponents being rocked or defeated, starting with a punch. How could they all be lucky?

And for the record, is there such a thing as a lucky punch? If you got knocked out by a punch in a fight, maybe you should have ducked. Does that take away from the guy who happened to put you to sleep while swinging to do so?

That is always a topic for another article.

Of all the points and insults that can be made in the same breath as Fedor Emelianenko, one thing people rarely talk about is instinct. In this writer's opinion, instincts are what makes Fedor the man and the fighter he is.

The latest argument is how can this guy be so highly revered? He isn't the best technical fighter out there, he's not necessarily athletically gifted like Georges St. Pierre. He didn't really look that impressive in his two latest victories. But they were victories.

Gameness and instincts are what make Fedor Emelianenko plain and simple. Its not about what he doesn't do or what he can or can't do, it is how he does what it is that he is doing that sets him apart.

Fedor is always in the fight, but rarely does it guide him. He allows it to happen and he moves accordingly. Sometimes he pushes, sometimes he pulls, but more often than not, he is dictating the fight.

This is a common trait amongst some of the greatest fighters the sport has known. Fedor's ability to not only be within the moment but influence the moment ever so slightly is what truly sets him apart.

It is his instincts regarding his opponent, the flow of the fight, and the results of his actions that guide him to move through that and emerge victorious.

It is not the man's striking, it is not his ground game, nor his grappling that solely lead him to win. It is his command and control that lead him to victory. It is hard to point to the intangible assets a fighter may have when talking about their worth.

Some things are measurable, or can be visibly presented or displayed. The striking he may or may not posses can be seen, his chin can be tested, his skin may cut, his submissions can be felt.

The man has not won 31 professional fights by being sloppy or second-tier. This is not to offset the arguments against him, as there are some interesting and even valid points to be made.

The point is only to say if the man was not as good as he is, he wouldn't be worth arguing about in the first place. But while fight fans are busy making their efforts to share their perspective, it is worth noting there is more to the story than punches and take-downs.

His instincts are hard to put into words, or supply upon demand. That being said, if you have spent more than five minutes on YouTube watching Fedor Emelianenko, like him or hate him, you know exactly what I mean.
Can CBS, Strikeforce, and Fedor Emelianenko Elevate Mixed Martial Arts?

In the forward progress made by mixed martial arts, there has been one constant that relentlessly drove the sport forward. That constant is evolution.

Evolution is within the nature of all things. In MMA it is displayed significantly by the rapid ascension of the sport from questionable to highly lucrative in under two decades.

The sport has evolved in so many ways from what it once was. Many important changes have been made, or forced in some cases, and progress and improvement were gained. One staple of the sport that has not fluctuated much at all has been the delivery in which fight fans are brought their beloved MMA.

Since the very beginning the success of MMA has rested primarily on the shoulders of pay per view numbers. For most of the sports history, the only way one could experience MMA was live, PPV, or once a DVD (VHS for you old timers) was released.

Then Zuffa and Spike TV partnered up to bring MMA into the living rooms of fight fans on cable TV. With the highly succesful Ultimate Fighter series, Spike and Zuffa have done an impressive job of educating an entire demographic who have developed an affinity for the sport. Without some of the events that transpired on Spike TV, some believe the sport may be much different today.

Events like the first Ultimate Fighter Finale snagged many fans who may have never bought a PPV if they had not been mesmerized by the blistering fight they witnessed. It left many wanting more, people were hooked by something they might have missed if it cost $45 bucks.

MMA is a lot like your favorite restaurant. Once upon a time you didn't know it was there, but now that you've been, you just can't wait to go back. Many fans didn't know MMA before Forrest Griffin fought Stephan Bonnar. Once they saw them fight, they couldn't wait for the next event.

Now many years later, another potentially high impact event is upon MMA. Saturday November 7th, CBS will broadcast live on network television a Strikeforce event featuring one of the most recognized figures in the sport. Fedor Emelianenko will face off with Brett Rogers live on free TV.

This is not a PPV, this is not $65 a month cable, if you have an antenna, you can catch this fight. Many people will tune in to watch this fight simply because it is free. There is an entire demographic of fight fans who can't afford to buy a PPV every month, but they follow the sport regardless. CBS and Strikeforce are offering this to them for nothing.

What a reward.

This may very well be one of the most important moments in the history of the sport. There is always someone declaring this or that event the biggest in the history of the UFC, but honestly this is bigger than the UFC. This event could change the face of MMA if the dice roll right.

That is a very bold statement considering the story history tells. This is not the first time an MMA event was held live on CBS. EliteXC tried their hand in impressing the sport upon casual viewers and sadly they failed handily. Strikeforce has something they didn't have and that is Fedor. EliteXC pinned their hopes on Kimbo Slice, a fighter with little MMA background, and his inexperience eventually cost them.

There are no garauntees in this sport, there is never a sure thing. That said, it is rare that Fedor Emelianenko leaves a fight without his hand raised leaving the crowd in awe of what he has just accomplished.

Strikeforce is not banking completely on Fedor to carry them, but he is quite capable of doing so regardless. Especially if he is successful in his typical exciting fashion live on CBS. Not to discredit or look past his very dangerous and game opponent Rogers, just to say, he is sure to bring a fight in that cage with him. If he has a typical showing—win, lose, or draw—he and Rogers can change this sport.

If CBS and Strikeforce can land the triple sevens and bring a war between Rogers and Emelianenko into living rooms everywhere for free, they will have procured an entire new audience that more than likely would never have spent a dime to watch the sport otherwise.

People talk about Griffin versus Bonnar as a pivotal moment in the sport, and the UFC made that happen and offered it to the world. Now Strikeforce has positioned itself to truly impact the world of MMA and leave its mark.

Strikeforce has given themselves a strong opportunity to announce the presence of MMA to the world with authority, and they picked the best man for the job. If succesful, this opens many doors and poses many questions about the future of MMA.

If Strikeforce and CBS can land the viewers interest and promise future events of a similar caliber, the sky is the limit.

It might compel the UFC to reconsider some of its approach in delivery. Perhaps pursue their own avenue of getting the UFC to more viewers with their own major network deal.

If Strikeforce can set the tone with their relationship with CBS, perhaps other stations would soften their stance on MMA.

Overall, the possibilities are endless, the outcomes are many, and the impact of the event may ripple in many ways. These are but a few points that can be made.

What is most exciting regardless is the potential. The potential of watching MMA evolve yet again, and further prove its value in the sporting world. Widespread acceptance is long overdue, and this could push MMA one step closer to earning the credit it deserves as a world-class sport.

Is The Ultimate Fighter 10 Heavyweights an Excercise In Futility?

Forrest Griffin, Diego Sanchez, Rashad Evans, Joe Stevenson, Michael Bisping, the list of high quality, above average fighters to conquer The Ultimate Fighter series goes on.

These are just the names of some who won the show.

Next in line, Nelson, Schoonover, Mitrione, seriously?

Lets face it fight fans, this crop of Ultimate Fighters leaves a lot to be desired. No one has really put on an impressive performance thus far. A couple have dominated but that may be more a result of their opponents than their potential. That is not to say they are not a talented group with potential, but which one of these fighters has proven so far that they can come close to competing with a Cheick Congo, a Cain Velasquez, or god forbid a Brock Lesnar.

The whole point of bringing these fighters into the UFC is to make waves in their division. Up to this point, not one fighter has shown the quality required to accomplish that goal. There is a definite potential for improvement in every case so far.

One glaring weakness has been stamina. The gas tanks seem half empty in a few cases. This is understandable to an extent but not excusable by any means.

These potential fighters have chosen one of the most demanding athletic competitions to participate in by pursuing a career as a fighter. Their cardio does not reflect their ambitions at this time.

Sure they have a great deal of time between wrapping the show and the actual finale where they will compete in the big show. Even still, their state of cardio in the show is indicative that they may not taking it very serious in the first place.

Time will tell and there are still a few fights to come.

That said, up to this point it has been fairly lackluster. Even the victories were sluggish, devoid of true competition at the elite level required to consider one UFC quality.

The most impressive display of aggression and power has been between Rampage and poor little innocent door. Not exactly as advertised when we started this thing a few weeks back.

When a fight fan tunes in to watch heavyweights compete for the chance of a lifetime, the expectations are far removed from what actually is transpiring before their eyes.
Needless to say, this season has really been a letdown in more ways than one.

The whole premise of the coaching match-up has been thrown out the window, leaving the relentless trash talk to lose its luster.

The fighters chosen for the show have not been able to excel in a match or exceed the other fighters abilities. Sadly when both competitors have room for improvement it makes really getting into the show hard to do.

Bottom line is this, as an MMA writer I have had the opportunity to roam my local area following regional events with a fever. In my experiences, I have seen more than one heavyweight fighter who would mop the floor with some of these guys.

How some of these TUF cast members earned their spot is a mystery to me knowing the talent that is out there just waiting to be discovered at the regional level. Maybe more fighters should tryout so the talent pool will be deep for the UFC to choose from.
This is not an attempt to totally discredit the accomplishments of those competing on the show, more so than a depiction of the realization that this season has been watered down by fighters who need more training to compete at the elite level.

It seems more obvious as each week passes, that we have been lured hook line and sinker, into following a show that promises nothing more than some "yo mammy" trash talk between two coaches who may never fight, and the ongoing hope that Kimbo Slice will return and take over the heavyweights TUF show somehow.

Neither event is going to happen any time soon so why do we continue to tune in so religiously?

We know damn well there is not one competitor thus far that could carry Heath Herrings jock strap.

So what is the point?

In the end perhaps there isn't one, perhaps we don't mind being misled to believe that quantity is better than quality. At this time, the quantity of potential UFC heavyweights far outweighs the quality.

"Suga" Rashad Evans: One of the Best TUF Coaches Ever

Rashad Evans has always been an impressive component to the UFC. He has always been in the mix since his debut. His heart and desire led him to win the first heavyweight TUF in a division he was clearly not built for.

His nearly unblemished record speaks for itself, and if your only loss came at the hands of Lyoto Machida, that's nothing to be ashamed of.

Simply put, "Suga" Rashad Evans is the real deal and always has been. Some folks have an affinity towards him, others can't stand his style. Regardless, this fighter has a wealth of qualities that can not be overlooked—like or dislike him, that remains a fact.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion has displayed one resounding quality with a undeniable display of coaching ability on The Ultimate Fighter Season 10.

Rashad's approach to coaching is inspiring, to say the least; if not flawless at its best.

The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV has been rolling for years. Many times, the coaches set the tone for the show more so than the fights or the fighters themselves. That is definitely the case in the current season of the show.

What has happened over the years has been the opening of a doorway into the personalities of guys most fight fans only know through their fights.

Everyone knew what type of guy Tito Ortiz was, but few knew what a class act Matt Serra was until he participated in TUF .

By showcasing not only the fights, but also the everyday actions and opinions of certain fighters, has allowed MMA fans to step into their lives and really get to know them.

The open window into these fighters' personalities has gone both ways for different fighters, for various reasons. Matt Hughes lost a lot of respect from many fight fans after his stint on the show. His personality could never compare with his talent level.

Then again, getting to know Georges St. Pierre on the TUF show allowed fans to find a real stand-up guy in a fighter that normally was limited by a language barrier.

Point being, 15 minutes in a cage does not allow for a fight fan to come to know what a fighter may be like as a person. Often times, what fight fans see in the cage is day and night compared to what a fighter is like in real life.

Wanderlei Silva is one of the scariest people on the earth after entering a cage, but on the streets is one of the kindest people in MMA. Many casual fans may never know this.

TUF has allowed Evans to show a side of him many fight fans may never have seen. Most fight fans can admit the guy is a phenomenal fighter. That said, though, who knew what a influential and charismatic leader he could be?

This guy has the potential of being every bit as great a coach and corner man as he ever was a fighter. Of course he obviously is a fighter, but he has a long future in the sport with the type of leadership he is displaying as a coach.

He has a long career ahead of him inside the cage, but when that time passes, he may make one of the best coaches the sport has seen outside the cage. His ability to encourage one moment and hold a fighter accountable another moment is impeccable.

He can speak softly one second, and turn up the heat a second later. He will not be intimidated, nor will he allow a fighter to falter. There really is not enough good that can be said about his run as a coach on TUF 10.

Another aspect of his stellar performance is the simple fact that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson could make Chucky Cheese look like a good coach.

"Hollywood"—sorry, "Rampage"—is doing such a horrible job of leading his team that anything Rashad does will look good. Of course, Evans rises above now, but his performance is better than many who were chosen to lead a team on The Ultimate Fighter .

In the end, it is worth noting how well he is doing. It is more than likely a reflection of his own training that he gets with Team Jackson. Greg Jackson is a premier corner man and trainer in this sport.

It is apparent that the influence he has on his fighters sticks and trickles down. Surely Rashad is his own man, but one would imagine he would have to give credit to Jackson for some of his approach.

Rashad's win-loss ratio is just one aspect of his coaching abilities. More important is the way he leads his warriors into battle, how he prepares them.

He tells one fighter today is the day of your birth, today you will be born as a UFC fighter. He tells another if you're not focused on winning this whole thing, if you're not focused on being the ultimate fighter, you've already lost.

He identifies where the individual is at mentally, he addresses them accordingly, and they perform for him. That is coaching at its finest, and Rashad is one of the finest coaches the TUF show has seen thus far.

Mixed Martial Artist Larry Esparza, A Next Generation Throwback

Photo courtesy of Terry Johnson xcfc.us

Pro fighters leave in their wake a wealth of experiences, both ups and downs. They have traveled the difficult road to becoming a pro. Behind them are many amateur fights, and many trials and tribulations that made them the fighter they are today.

For an amateur the road ahead is inglorious. No one knows who you are, save for friends, relatives, and training partners. For an amateur, that long journey to becoming a pro has just started. And you fight, you fight whenever, wherever you can to learn the game. Not unlike the pioneers of this sport, your name is not quite as important as your fights.

To gain the invaluable experience which can only be found inside the cage, an amateur must be hungry. If they are not pushed to the limit and tested now they may not make it later. Those experiences will carry them to the heights they aspire to.

Some fighters are naturals, and made for this. Some fighters just emit the confidence, the talent, the heart of a pro. Even still, their superior fighting minds, and the support structure surrounding them will lead them to take their time and be patient. Let it come to them as opposed to chasing it.

There is an amateur fighting in Tucson, Arizona who fits this description. At 155 pounds, Larry Esparza carries a record of 3-2. We are talking about a highly talented, very technical fighter. A fighter who as mentioned before will fight whenever or wherever. This is a hungry young fighter who recently fought twice in one week.

Guys like Wanderlei Silva used to fight two or three times a night. Now some pros fight two or three times a year. As an amateur Esparza takes two fights in a week. This guy is a throwback fighter.

When asked how he came to be lined up with two fights in one week, Esparza had this to say. "At first I was getting ready for a title fight we were going to have in the XCFC. That fell through and the opponent got hurt. So I figured I was in good enough shape to take a title fight why not do two, you know what I mean. It's an extra round that's all it is."

He first fought as a part of the National Cage Fighting promotion. Just a week later, you would find him in the cage again at the Xtreme Courage Fighting Championships.

He won the first fight and lost the second, but the wins and losses are just a bi-product of the bigger picture. What he is doing is earning as much needed experience within his reach that he can. This will harden this young fighter and prepare him for his future.

He understands what the future of MMA is, and he recognizes that right now, fighters must diversify themselves to stay with the curve. A fighter can't rely on just one strength.

"The whole point about MMA is that's it's a four dimensional world. You can't just pick one and excel at one. You can see as the game progresses, the fighters that are taking off in all four worlds and not just one are the fighters that are excelling. You can't just work on one, you've got to do all four aspects of the game or you're going to get left behind."

It is not just his fighting, or desire that is moving him along. Esparza has that great support structure mentioned earlier. He trains out of two of the best gyms in his area, Apex MMA with Joey Rivera, as well as Tucson Dojo with the renowned Steve Owen.

His trust in his corner-man Rocco is a huge strength as well. Their communication and response in a fight is flawless. Rocco is deeply entrenched in MMA and has a wealth of knowledge. Rocco has spent plenty of time with MMA legend Don Frye. Rocco's experiences and guidance hold a lot of weight with Esparza.

Larry's trust in his trainer was apparent, "Rocco, I mean, I have a real close relationship with my father of course and Rocco's the second guy. Other than him I have my dad that's it. He's a father figure, he takes care of me, he doesn't feed me to the wolves, and if something is not right he takes care of it for me. He's the guy to go to."

Rocco's cornering is smooth and direct. No frantic yelling, just clear, calm instruction that is easy for his fighter to digest and apply. To watch Esparza respond to Rocco's instruction, it becomes apparent this is a great team.

So with a strong drive to learn, a talent base that is undeniable, and a world class corner-man to guide him, this young fighter is building today what will be the foundation for success tomorrow.

Watching Larry fight, it is quickly apparent he is on his way. It may take time, but this young man intends to make his mark on the sport.

With all the opportunities for fights popping up in the southwest, Esparza will have plenty of chances to improve upon what is already a very promising outlook for his career.

The Machida Error Extends the Machida Era

Casual fight judges everywhere have found themselves flabbergasted by an unlikely decision made during UFC 104's main event between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio Rua. Many articles have been written about the subject, the topic has been discussed.

In hindsight, after reviewing the fight for a second time, it is still very clear who won, but there is more to this fiasco than just a poor decision by three judges who saw a different fight than most. W's and L's are just numbers, but pride and victory are forever. The ripples of this situation will resonate for some time.

While there is no consolation to a man like Rua, whom many people felt won the fight, he still can hold his head high knowing he was the first to ever stump Machida, the first ever to actually push him at the peak of his career. He laid down a blueprint for how to fight this elusive opponent.

It is tough to watch such a phenomenal performance be wasted, as it was quite rare to begin with. Not Rua's actual talent, but the fact that he dominated Machida most of the fight, that is the rarity—as rare as an ugly UFC ring girl.

A loss on your record when you actually won can be a hard pill to swallow. What is also a detriment is the fact that this may have been one of the lone opportunities for someone to best Machida. Lighting rarely strikes twice in the same place, and it seemed Rua had captured that lightning in a bottle Saturday night. He may not be able to recreate his efforts, as in the future the circumstances will have totally changed.

Rematches are great, but can he do it again? Will he be able to duplicate his performance, and even if he does, will Machida prove predictable based on what recently happened or will fight fans see a totally different fight? Time will tell.

When Joe Rogan said to fight fans everywhere, "welcome to the Machida era," he was not off the mark. This man has the talent and ability to dominate perennially without a doubt. He really is that good.

Consider for a moment Georges St. Pierre. One hiccup in that last four years is all he has had. It was one moment in time set aside for another man to reign atop the division. The short time frame that showed someone other than St. Pierre with the welterweight strap was a mere flash in the pan.

Other than that, everyone knows where the belt belongs, and where it more than likely will stay.

Machida is in that same type of situation. He may have his moments of weakness or vulnerability, but they will be few and far between. The one chance a man has to beat him will more than likely be the opportunity of a lifetime, and it wont happen often.
UFC 104 was that chance for Rua.

He beat Machida and suffered a loss despite his superior efforts. Imagine the drastic change in the landscape had the right call been made. Things would be quite different moving forward that much is certain.

Alas, it is not different.

It is much like it was expected to be, Machida still a title holder, and looking forward to his next defense. A title defense he most certainly will seize with more authority than the one he just had. This will harden him now that he has tasted what defeat may feel like, even if he did not actually lose.

Not unlike St. Pierre's dominating return to the world champion caliber fighter fight fans know he is, Machida should bounce back from this difficult test stronger without a doubt.
So that being said, has the Machida error slammed the door on any diversity atop the division that may have been had we seen an accurate decision?

More than likely that is the case. So there you have it folks, Machida by no fault of his own wins a fight as many predicted he would even though the judges clearly missed the beating he took in that cage.

Moving forward, a once in a lifetime opportunity was ripped from the grasp of the ever deserving Mauricio Rua. He may get the chance to prove his championship caliber skills yet again, but rest assured what happened Saturday night was one of a kind. It will be quite surprising to see the same fight again, a man like Machida will not allow that to happen.

So the Machida error prolongs the Machida era, one would imagine it should last for quite some time.

In the Red Corner at Xtreme Courage Fighting Championship's Havoc

Shane Dunagan held an event this past Saturday that was nothing short of astonishing, considering the humble nature of the venue. The Xtreme Courage Fighting Championships saw its latest installment Havoc grasp the crowd and hold them tightly from fight one to fight 12.

On a fight card filled with hungry and aspiring MMA amateurs, there were submissions upon submissions and knockouts that had the crowd roaring like a mega arena full of fight fans. But this was just a small park across the tracks in Lordsburg, NM, how could they get so many fight fans to show up and rock the desert air with their cheers?

Class, dignity, honor, and most importantly, safety is what brought both fighters and fight fans alike and packed them into North Park like sardines. And, of course, top notch fights.

See, this isn't your run of the mill, flashy casino style event. This was MMA at its purist. Master Shane Dunagan would not have it any other way. He prides himself on the exciting fights he puts on.

These fights are a direct result of his hard work to pair up fighters that are equal in talent and experience, and also able to put on a great show. His efforts reflect in the quality of the fights.

This was a cage, a DJ, some refreshments, and some really great fights. No beer, no lasers, no knuckleheads in the crowd to run their mouths, this was just solid MMA and nothing more.

Shane set myself and my photographer up at a table cage side right next to the red corner. This experience opened up a whole new aspect of MMA that one does not get sitting at home, or even live in the front row.

To hear and see the intricate inner working of both the corners and the staff around the fights was quite rewarding and eye opening. One of the most crucial aspects of the night was the flawless officiating by Joe Valencia, a true professional, whose approach was impeccable.

I've been watching MMA for over a decade and this guy was one of the most impressive officials I have ever seen. Hats off to Shane for employing a top-shelf official for his events. It made a huge impact on the nature of the event.

Another notable aspect was the honor apparent at this event. There was a level of expectation that can only be achieved by years of setting a tone of respect and dignity. Shane has obviously done that, because to a man every person involved in this event was a class act. From fighters to corner-men, no one got out of line, no one displayed disrespect. Not even the fans. That in itself is a rarity.

In a fight for the Jr. Lightweight Title, Justin Berryhill lost his belt to a very impressive J.D. Aguilar. Berryhill was a crowd favorite and a great fighter but fell to the superior ground game of Aguilar. It was not for lack of trying though.

The two rolled and reversed their way through three rounds of absolute war. Positions were traded time and time again with few lulls in the action. In the end, Aguilar kept getting the better of the exchanges and came out on top with a rear naked choke in the third round.

In probably the knockout of the night, two behemoths entered the cage and squared off for what would turn out to be a short fight. Pat Whelton weighing in at 300 lbs faced off with Gabe Dominguez at 285. When the bell rung, these giants came out swinging and it was obvious someone was going night night.

Whelton got caught and dropped his hands as if to say it did not hurt. The two piece and a biscuit that followed did hurt him. A beautiful combo by Dominguez ended his night. Nothing lights up a crowd like a 300lb man getting starched.

Another amazing knockout came in the championship match between Jesus Padron and Justin Felix. Padron holds belts for the LHW and the HW classes. On this night, he was defending his HW strap. In a great back and forth battle, he controlled most of the match.

At one point, Felix maneuvered to Padron's back while the two were standing, and Jesus was having none of that. He grabbed the arm around his neck, and proceeded to flip Felix down on his head knocking him out when he hit the mat. It was a very technical move that displayed not only his drive to win in any circumstances but his level of talent.

In a move not seen by many fight promotions, the main event was held between two very game female fighters. Maggie Maldonado squared off with Courtney Casey, and as soon as Mr. Valencia allowed the fight to commence, the fireworks started.

In a heated, fast-paced back and forth fight these two ladies did the deed and went to work on each other. Eventually with a lightning fast submission, Casey came out with an arm-bar. Maldonado was as game as any fighter I've seen and with hints of Gracie honor refused to tap.

Thank goodness for Valencias recognition of the hold and his stopping the fight, because Maldonado was not tapping. He saved her some rehab time, but she still earned her respect. Of course, so did Casey for coming out on top with a slick submission to end the night, and what could have been submission of the night.

Overall, we're talking about an event that breaks the mold when considering the norm. Most folks travel to their local casino to see this fight or that. Shane Dunagan and the XCFC put on fights great enough to get the same crowd out to the middle of no where.

In the process, he puts on equally good if not blatantly superior fights for his fans. It might seem strange to drive off into the desert and watch one of these events, but once your leaving Lordsburg, you can't wait to get back.
Bloodsport: So You Think You Know Mixed Martial Arts? Perhaps Not

Anyone who has ever paid a second's notice to mixed martial arts has heard it all before. MMA is a bloodsport, human cockfighting, it's not a real sport—the list is endless.

Why does the laymen, with little knowledge of this historical and world-class sport disregard it so? What is the barrier that keeps MMA from true acceptance in the sporting world?

For one to point outward, first they must reflect on themselves. MMA has shown its ugly side more than once, and an evolution has occurred.

That evolution has allowed MMA as a whole to identify, address, and rectify most problems it has encountered as it grew. While many hurdles lie ahead, the road is fraught with obstacles.

The biggest obstacle that MMA now faces is not getting Fedor and Brock in the same cage. It is not who will beat Anderson Silva. It is not about Kimbo Slice.

Those events are only important to those who truly follow and support the sport. Together that community is sizable, respectable, and knowledgeable in most cases.

Yet in the big picture, they truly are just a fraction of the true general public. The general masses would just as soon dismiss MMA than pay it a moment's time. Many will never give it that much.

Still, there are many who just need to be shown, and they will come to be entertained by a fight. The hope is that some of them will appreciate the beauty of the sport, the fluidity of combat in motion, the indescribable display of heart and pride. Then they become fans.

So how does MMA reach these potential fans?

The biggest obstacle in MMA is mainstream media coverage. At this juncture in time, mainstream media is actually more foe than friend. Mainstream media has single-handed kept its foot on the neck of MMA for some time now.

While there are signs the ice is thawing on the relationship, it is still a very cold one. MMA is a daily event in many parts of the world. Important events happen all the time that get no attention.

Rarely does MMA make the "front page." Only mega events like UFC 100, or St. Pierre vs. Penn II get mainstream coverage. For the most part, MMA is an afterthought on a back page, where the hardcore enthusiasts will find it. Even there it is only loyal to the heartbeat of mainstream MMA. If they don't have Fedor or Lesnar on their roster, they don't get much love.

When MMA does make the front page, it is usually not an event they are talking about. Usually it is something that has gone wrong for the sport. Something to add to that fire of negativity surrounding the public perception of this sport.

An MMA enthusiast may think Griffin vs. Bonnar is the most important moment in the history of the sport. They may think Dana White is alright, even if he does make mistakes.

To someone who doesn't care, when they hear MMA, they think of the enraged fighter running from police that they heard about. Or maybe the obscenity laden tirade of one of the sport's most recognizable figures.

For some reason, a guy like Dana White becomes a target. That reason is, of course, Mr. White himself; but that said, does he get front page attention when he puts on a fight card solely for our troops? Of course not.

Who cares if Dana is contributing to a cause that helps war veterans with traumatic brain injuries recover and take back their lives. When is he going to screw up again? That's the real story.

Maybe he should make a mistake at one of those events so he can get mainstream media's attention on something more important in this sport than its mistakes. There truly is a lot of good emitting from the great people that make up MMA.

Shouldn't an event like Xtreme Couture's Xtreme Combat Weekend warrant a sliver of attention? This is an event designed with the most honorable intention of supporting service men and women in need. It shows a side of MMA that is rarely seen by those masses who are so quick to judge.

The amateur fight promotion Tuff-N-Uff is partnering up with Xtreme Couture to put on three days of paintball and a fight card to raise money for the cause. A Pirates Paradise in Mesquite Nevada is helping out by offering their facility as well.

These are noble efforts by important people in the MMA community. Randy Couture, anyone?

On another note, Jitz Fighting Apparel donates proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project . This is a company just getting started that has already prioritized paying back those who sacrificed for their country.

These companies and the people behind the scenes are mixed martial artists, or in some way involved in MMA. They represent this sport. This is real feel good stuff. Shouldn't people be hearing about it?

Not today, fight fans. It's just you in here reading this. Maybe if something really newsworthy—like a Dana tirade—took place, the big boys might tune in. Until then, it's up to MMA to do its own advertising. Word of mouth is the best way to make that happen.

Events like the ones mentioned, The Xtreme Combat Weekend, the efforts of Jitz to donate to those in need, Dana White and the UFC putting on The Fight for the Troops ; they all need to be talked about.

It is up to fight fans to talk about every positive issue this sport has to offer, because the competition is loading up and waiting for the other shoe to fall.

Never mind if some of boxing's most notable figures run their mouths rampant with derogatory remarks about gay porn, homosexuals, and tattooed skinheads when talking about MMA and its fans. Bob Arum and Bernard Hopkins deserve a pass, apparently. No one is putting their biased and inappropriate comments up on the front page for dissection, are they?

Let them slide, no big deal. Besides, mainstream media already crucified Dana White for similar disparaging comments and are exhausted from the witch hunt. Front page sporting news does not come easy.

As the sports reporting industry learns about MMA, like a small child playing with a computer, it will come to realize its potential. At first its confusing, with a lot of moving parts that they don't quite understand, and that glowing light—what is that?

Eventually, they will see its intricate inner workings, and the true beauty of its capabilities as a formidable component to their sport reporting worlds. By that time, the fight fans might have just taken over.

Jitz Fighter Apparel: A Brand Apart

When you talk to Mike Cascia and Scott Bauer, a very distinct feeling comes over you. You get the idea that these gentlemen are well on their way to making their mark on this sport.

That mark is the brand of Jitz Fighting Apparel. It is a mark that can be found on fighters whom they sponsor, or littering the southwest worn proud by their fans, and even half way around the globe on our soldiers.

Some notable names wearing the Jitz brand include, but are not limited to, UFC standouts Joe Lauzon and George Roop, Noah Thomas of the WEC, Mike Whitehead, the list goes on. Mike Cascia went out of his way to mention how appreciative Jitz is of those fighters who took a chance on a young company, and wore their brand with pride.

Jitz has a goal in mind, and that goal is to set themselves apart as an alternative to the norm in the MMA clothing industry.

Mike stated, "I understand that if it ain't broke don't fix it, but at the same time you have got to bring something to the table that they haven't seen before or haven't heard of before that is just a little bit different. I think we provide that.

"People that get to know us or do know us will find there is an element of integrity that is attached to us. A lot of people who know us know we mean what we say. I'm not speaking on anyone else saying that they don't have that, but the industry was getting a little bit regular for our style and we just felt like it needed something new.

"We care about who we talk to, we care about what we say, and we mean what we say. We just felt that there could be a little bit more compassion involved in the business aspect of MMA without compromising that business aspect. That is something that we take pride in.

"We have yet to sponsor a fighter that did not want us to sponsor them again"

Not only does Jitz support the fighter, but they make a strong effort to support our troops overseas as well. In Iraq, Jitz is making strides to not only train soldiers, but enable them to compete in small tournaments known as the Jitz Combatives.

Mike had this to say about the events that they sponsor in Iraq, "They've got a love for this sport, just as much as the next guy. They don't have the resources to see it like we do, and experience it like we do. So we try to help bring it to them. The way we look at it, that's the least we can do."

Scott, a military veteran, talked about working the Jitz Combatives, "We take a lot of pride in helping support the soldiers in any way we can, we owe it to them. These guys put their lives on the line every day, and at the end of the day, they're still willing to go through a tournament." Scott is actually in Iraq and plays a hands on role.

A portion of Jitz proceeds go to support the Wounded Warrior Project. The WWP is an honorable cause, a cause that deserves its own column written about its efforts. Suffice to say, it is another great place to see Jitz focusing on with regard to their support of the troops.

Jitz is trying to set its own tone in the business of MMA gear, their generosity to the troops is a great place to start. Mike points to their genuine willingness and drive to do their part. "At the end of the day it was something we didn't have to do, we wanted to do it."

Helping the troops is just one strong point to take away from their efforts. In the process they also display a more human side to the MMA community. The forward progress of this sport is happening quickly but it is still widely brushed aside as blood sport, or non relevant by the "sophisticated" masses.

Efforts like those of Jitz, and the people behind it, go a long way in offsetting that sentiment. Mike had a great comment regarding that aspect.

"A lot of people don't realize just how evolved the sport it is, just how articulate it is, how calculated it is, and just how much knowledge actually goes into it. And just like anybody else, MMA fighters, cage fighters, whether they are amateur or pro, can actually still care about people. You know, care about life issues and politics, we've got brains too.

"I think its crucial that people see people involved in MMA doing stuff like this. It kind of washes off that tainted picture that MMA is a bunch of knuckle heads. I think it's absolutely crucial that people can associate more positives with MMA."

Supporting the men and women of our armed forces, and setting a tone of respect and dignity representing the MMA community is a great way for Jitz to display some of those positives. It also displays their intentions to raise the sport up with their lead.

When talking about the future, Mike was quick to claim his intentions, "We plan to take over the world, one fighter at a time. I wish I was kidding but that's our goal. We want to go straight to the top.

"We don't want to replace anybody. Competition in this business is necessary. We deserve to be on the radar. That's how we feel, we deserve it, we earned it. You know we built Jitz from nothing. We didn't have anything when we started this company, just an idea. We felt like the sponsorship in MMA clothing was lacking something and we had the answer to it."

In closing Mike had this to say, "Give Jitz a chance, we're just a bunch of guys that started from nothing, and we're going somewhere. We can't do it without the fans or the fighters."

For more information about the efforts of Jitz to support our troops, or to check out their line of MMA gear check out their website and myspace pages.

Xtreme Courage Fighting Championships: Taking Care Of Fighters and Fans Alike

On October 17, in Lordsburg, New Mexico, Xtreme Courage Fighting Championships will be rocking the desert. Lordsburg may be a small rural town, but on this night XCFC owner Shane Dunagan looks to light up the desert sky with an event that needs only one name; Havoc.

The XCFC has been in the MMA business four years now, it is without a doubt that they know how to put on a show.

I had a chance to talk with XCFC owner Master Dunagan recently. Master Dunagan's quest for purity and honesty in this sport is nothing short of dignified and honorable.

That dignity and honor stem from an extensive background in the world of martial arts. A 5th Dan in Tae Kwon Do, Master Dunagan began his quest in martial arts some time ago.

"Ive been doing Tae Kwon Do since '85. I started martial arts in '80. I've been doing several martial arts, a little bit of everything from Wing Chun to Shotokan, to Muay Thai, the list goes on."

The core of martial arts is extremely apparent when talking to Master Dunagan about his ambitions for his promotion in the sport of MMA. His promotion the XCFC is not only making a name for itself with fight fans, but also with the fighters themselves.

For an amateur fighter trying to make a name in this sport, it can be difficult at times to gain exposure but also protect ones self in the process. This is a business that has been marred with shady practices that loom behind the scenes.

On the big stage it may be less apparent but at the regional level, sometimes the fighter becomes a victim. Promoters will at times offer what they can not deliver or worst yet lie to get a fighter in the cage. The result of that is an unfair playing field which leads to impure events.

Everything from an opponents prior experience can be misrepresented all the way to something as simple as whether or not an opponent made weight. These are crucial areas of focus for an amateur trying to find his way in this sport and protect his future. Master Dunagan is taking extra steps to ensure that does not happen to those who fight under his banner.

"What i try to do with the XCFC is I try to put up a level playing field. I really check the guys out, talk to them, and communicate with them. I do my own match making and I just try to keep fair play. So our guys come in all weighing the same, their experience is always really close. We want to be honest with everybody and keep it fair.

"The fighters really have a lot of respect for me for that. I guess that's just not the norm for events that are going on elsewhere, they just don't get treated very good in that sense."

Shane is very proud of the recognition his events get from fight fans and fighters alike. He has a great turnout with fight fans from Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and fighters from all over the country as well.

"We get a lot of compliments on our fights. I've had people tell me that my fights are better than UFC fights. I think we have a really good deal. It's kind of crazy, you show up at an outside venue, North Park in Lordsburg NM, it doesn't look like much of a venue but once we get everything set up we turn it into a pretty good show. We usually pull about 1,200 spectators to a small rural area."

Shane also talks about expanding his reach. "We are looking at traveling a little bit more in the New Mexico area. We are talking about Deming, possibly Las Cruces, I've looked into the Albuquerque area." This will allow him to bring his unique brand of MMA to a more broad audience in the southwest.

For now, on October 17 local fans can look forward to some explosive amateur match ups and a class act promotion backing them up in the XCFC. If I took one thing away from my conversation with Master Dunagan, it was this; treat the fighters right, put on exciting show with exciting rules, and the rest will come. This is a sound way to do business and earn the respect of both fighter and fight fans.

It truly was a pleasure speaking to someone who really puts the integrity of martial arts back into MMA. It seems so much today, fight fans suffer the business side of things. They must endure marketing, or strategic planning. What ever happened to honor and integrity fight fans? It is alive and well at the XCFC, and will be on display at their upcoming event Havoc.

In closing Master Dunagan had one final comment to make. "I think we've probably got the best event in NM. I'm not trying to brag, but I really do believe that. You know, it's overall about production, and fights, and the quality of fighters we put out."

What more is there really? Put on a good show by taking care of the roots of your aspirations, the fighters and the fans. The rest will take care of itself.

Can Lyoto Machida Become the First LHW Champ to Defend in Two Years?

In the main event of UFC 104 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles CA, Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida will attempt to become the first UFC Light Heavy Weight Champion in two years to defend his title.

The last man to do so was Quinton "Rampage" Jackson when he defeated Dan "Hendo" Henderson and unified the UFC and Pride belts. This was a significant event in MMA history as the unification of the LHW titles of the two most recognizable fight leagues on the planet was at hand.

Since the title was unified no one has defended it once.

It would appear as of late that for a LHW champ holding on to this belt is easier said than done. "Rampage" was only able to defend it the one time. This observation is a strong testament to the depth and danger of the waters in the division lately. Many predators are lurking.

"Rampage" lost his title after one defense to the always-game Forrest Griffin. It was a hard fought battle that left many fight fans divided as to how it played out. In the end a unanimous decision for Griffin did not sit well with some fans but many believed in the outcome. Regardless, "Page" passed the torch to Griffin.

Next on tap for the newly crowned champion was a fight with undefeated and fellow Ultimate Fighter winner "Suga" Rashad Evans. In a fight that saw Griffin looking very strong out of the gates, eventually saw "Suga" land a devastating blow that dropped the champ. A short ground and pound lesson later and Rashad had won his title. Glory is fleeting as he would soon find out.

After quite a bit of confusion and speculation as to who would fight Rashad for his title, his fate changed drastically. What was originally thought to be a lock for some "black on black crime" as "Rampage" called it, "Page" was supposed to face off with Rashad for another chance at what was once his belt.

This sport is an unpredictable one, and circumstances led to the "Rampage" vs. "Suga" fight to fade into the background. As fate would have it, the next man in line was the also undefeated Machida.

Unfortunately for Rashad, that fate brought with it the end of his short-lived title reign. When the two undefeated fighters clashed someone's "0" had to go. Rashad was handled by Machida and knocked out decisively in the second round. Machida has made his statement in this sport.

Can he become the first champ in the division to defend that belt in over two years? Will the pressure of not only his perfect record, but the weight of UFC gold be too much for the "Dragon" to endure? Odds are one thing but this belt seems to have a mind of its own lately.

The last man to defend it more than once was Chuck "The Iceman" Lidell and his last defense was in '06. He on the other hand, became quite acquainted with the strap he held so dear, and he defended it with a ferocity the division has not seen in some time. That may all be about to change.

"The Dragon" is quite obviously a different breed of fighter that really has earned his place as MMA elite. What started as a career marred with speculation as to his ability to excite and lure fight fans, has turned into speculation as to who will eventually best this crafty and unique fighter. Greatness is forever, and the Dragon truly is a great fighter.

The answer by the UFC has been to pit him against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. "Shogun" is no stranger to long time fight fans, and more recent casual fans may recall his decimation of the before mentioned "Iceman" Lidell.

"Shogun" has been showing an increased comfort in the UFC and if he can somehow show he is still the warrior he once was in Pride, there is no telling how this fight will go. His hunger and desire is lethal, and ever increasing as he progresses in the UFC. Alas the past is no indicator of the future in this sport. So time will tell.

One thing is certain, many will tell you that to be a true champion, you must at least defend the title once. Sometimes that aspect in itself can be more difficult than earning it in the first place. Nothing comes easy in this sport. Not even for those with perfect records and seemingly mystical fighting abilities.

There is no doubt that Machida will bring his best with him into that cage Oct. 24. Rua will more than likely reciprocate with the best "Shogun" the UFC has seen thus far. The question still remains, will Machida be the first in two years to enter the cage with his title and leave with it just the same at the end of the fight?

Glory is fleeting, hunger and desire is lethal, and greatness is timeless. Time will tell which of those theories plays out at UFC 104.

Fights Finished All Night Long at The WFF's Battle For The Desert

Al Fuentes and Thom Ortiz must be extremely proud this week. The inaugural event of their new fight promotion the World Fighting Federation set a strong tone Saturday night.

For a promotion that had never put on an event before it did not show. Battle for the Desert left everyone in the crowd asking one question: When is the next show going to be?

Fourteen fights, two decisions—that math equals a mesmerizing night of fights that had fans on their feet with regularity.

Overall, this was a promising display of the potential of MMA in the area, on all levels from promotion to talent. Oh, and of course the ring girls, they had plenty of potential too.

The event was a competition between Phoenix and Tucson fighters. The fights were held in Tucson, so the crowd was Tucson heavy, but everyone there knew someone fighting.

It made for an electricity that was unreal. The intensity when the two final wars were being waged was enormous; you could have cut it with a knife.

The first fight was between Joey Rivera and Jeff Horlacher. Joey, fighting out of Tucson, walked out and the crowd went absolutely insane. By the time he made it to the cage, the chant of "Jo-ey, Jo-ey" had begun. It was quite a display of appreciation for a very respected local fighter.

Horlacher, on the other hand, had a smaller but equally classy and loyal cheering section. In the end though, both the local fans and Rivera proved too much for Jeff and his supporters.

In a fight that mostly saw Rivera dominate Horlacher with body control and a seamless ground game, Rivera sunk a rear naked choke in the first round.

Horlacher clearly wanted to stand, but Rivera found a way to smother and frustrate him eventually holding him down, sinking the submission. Rivera was extremely impressive in his victory. Horlacher is a game fighter and surely will return stronger to fight another day.

The most memorable aspect of the fight was how the crowd exploded when the tap came. It might have been a small local venue but if you closed your eyes you could have swore you were at the UFC.

The final fight of the night, George "The Brown Bomber" Castro vs. Matt Howard, somehow created even more excitement. Apparently, George knows every one in Tucson because it seemed like they were all there when he walked to the cage.

Between the 2-Pac walk out music, and what seemed like a sea of Castro fans screaming, the noise was deafening. Once again, the electricity was explosive when the bell rang.

When the two engaged, it turned into a heated stand up battle with a few lulls up against the cage struggling for body control. Despite spirited efforts by Howard to get it down the fight was fought standing up.

It was quickly apparent this fight was ending early. Howard displayed what he calls his underrated stand up, and it shouldn't remain underrated for long after his showing in that cage.

Punches were flying and landing, and with every single one the crowd had a reaction. No one was sitting, and everyone was in that fight.

Howard gave Castro a strong run for his money, a lesser fighter would have folded under the pressure of some of Howard's punches. Castro did not.

His gameness was very apparent as he absorbed some good shots and continued to return the favor, as the two fighters went to war. Eventually "The Brown Bomber" landed a nasty shot that put Howard down and the place erupted.

First round; fight over!

People were rushing the cage, security was trying to sort it out; it was amazing. This place went absolutely nuts and fight fans knew right there, The WFF is here to stay.

There is not enough room in one article to talk about all the exciting fights that took place. They all deserve their due. These two though really stood out above the rest with regard to intensity and excitement.

There was one more fight that really stood out. This was the fight between Tucson and Phoenix. At the end of the day, there really is no other way to say it, Tucson dominated.

In particular, George Castro's Boxing Inc. really shined brightly. His gym was well represented. They didn't win them all but they showed tremendous talent.

In a recent interview with the WFF Castro stated, "This is a big fight for Tucson, I don't think Tucson gets the recognition." Mr. Castro, after Saturday night, fighters and fight fans alike know Tucson is on the map. Your gym did a lot to help earn that respect.

At the end of the day, it is WFF owners Mr. Fuentes and Mr. Ortiz who made this all possible with their efforts to bring a new flavor of MMA to fight fans in the desert. They did a fine job of it.

They brought together some amazing fighters, at a very classy outdoor venue, with some devastating fights. They really set the bar high and put on an extremely entertaining event. The next fight card can't happen soon enough.

Anyone who attended would tell you the same.

For more information about the WFF and their fighters visit their website.

The Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation: Your Support Is Necessary

Today fight fans is a day to take a step back from the glamour of mixed martial arts for a moment.Today is a day to pay your respect and appreciation for another type of warrior, another type of hero: the American soldier.

It is times like these that the sport of MMA really shows its true colors. It is times like these that MMA truly opens its heart to this world. Once disregarded as a heartless blood sport with no future, not today.

Today no one would dare utter those words. Not with the honorable efforts being made by those who represent not only this sport but the camaraderie of this country.

MMA is represented on many levels by many people. Some of those people truly shine bright like the stars that they are. Randy Couture is one of those individuals.

He and his family at Xtreme Couture are supporting the most noble of causes. Randy and wife Kim Couture created the Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation.

This foundation was created in the spirit of saluting and assisting armed forces veterans in their transition back to their every day lives after the trials of war may have left them challenged. Whether it be physical or mental rehabilitation, support for loved ones while they are away, or a simple leg up financially, the XCGIF is there for those military families in need.

The XCGIF raises funds to contribute to the forward progress of these men and women no matter what the issue may be. So many, too many, have returned home to have their lives forever changed by the experiences they have endured. This cause is there to support them in their transitions.

Oct. 16-18, the XCGIF is holding the Xtreme Combat Weekend in Mesquite NV. An event that will not only provide fight fans a chance to meet marquis fighters like Randy, but stand along side them for three days of paint ball wars.

A Pirate's Paradise is the venue, a top notch facility. In addition to the games an MMA event will be held by the cream of the crop in amateur fight promotions Tuff N Uff. All topped of by an after party.

Three days of paintball with MMA's most notorious, a fight card that guarantees to do nothing less than dazzle, all followed up by an after party to soak it all in. What more can a fight fan ask for?

On the site Randy had this to say about the nature of the cause. "Having spent time in a uniform, it became a personal goal of mine to find a way to give back to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces for the sacrifices they make defending our freedoms. The Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation was born out of that desire."

Jeff Meyer, vice president of the Tuff-N-Uff promotion holds our soldiers high. "The men and women who protect my freedom and keep this the best damn country in the world are truly amazing people in my eyes."

Brothers Barry and Jeff Meyer are as generous as they come, it is no surprise to see them contributing to this cause.

Ryan Couture is looking forward to some paintball action as well. "All of our previous events have been fun in different ways and have appealed to different groups and I think that paintball will be no exception.

"I'm looking forward to heading up to mesquite and getting shot up in the name of charity. I'm also really excited that we have the opportunity to partner with Tuff-N-Uff this time around to make amateur fighting a part of the draw as well."

The time has come to take a long look in the mirror, the time has come to dig deep fight fans. In these difficult times for our country we all struggle.

It is important though that we do not overlook those who may be struggling with more than just the economy. There are those out there that have endured even greater struggles than just financial concerns. They need our help.

Imagine the sense of pride and honor you would feel after taking a moment to do your part and either attend this event or contribute in any way possible. Be it be financially contributing to the XCGIF on or just simply shaking the hand of someone who has served this country and saying thank you.

Do your part, get involved fight fans. This is bigger than MMA, this is what this country is built on. Supporting our brothers and sisters in uniform is not hard, it is not demanding, and it is truly rewarding.

Please take a moment and ask yourself what it is you can do. Even if you can't make the event, perhaps you can find a way to make a donation. The XCGIF website offers more than one way to contribute.

You can donate by phone or email. Or you can purchase unique items ranging from T-Shirts, one of a kind wristbands made from old parachutes by the soldiers in Iraq. Or even a custom signature Couture Hog, The Humm-C. All proceeds are donated to the cause.

This is a chance to really get involved in something important folks. Take this opportunity to not only do something noble and worthy, but also support an effort that really shows what good can come from a sport many have seen as nothing more than bloodsport.

Help the Couture family display that not just the fighters and are honorable and respectable people, but their fans are as well.

I know this community well. We are good people, we are a family. It is time for this community to do something more than just follow this sport.

Once again, get involved people, support this sport, support our soldiers. For more information on how to participate or just contribute in any way you can, visit the Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation website.

Welcome The World Fighting Federation to The MMA Family

On October 3rd at 7pm the World Fighting Federation will hold its inaugural event. The event will be held at the very classy AVA Amphitheater at the Casino Del Sol in Tucson AZ. The card is a contest between Tucson and Phoenix mixed martial artists. The event is called the Battle For The Desert and both cities will be fighting for bragging rights to AZ.

On this card the WFF boasts over a dozen fights. One notable match is in the heavyweight division. George "The Brown Bomber" Castro looks to throw bombs with Matt Howard in this pro bout. Castro represents Boxing Inc. in Tucson, and Howard fights out of The Lions Den in Scottsdale.

George hopes to put Tucson on the map as respectable MMA town. He told WFFMMA "This is a big fight for Tucson, I don't think Tucson gets the recognition or the support." Castro will do his part as he vows to "Get it on and throw some bombs". He is training hard at his gym and he sees the fight ending one way. His prediction; a knockout.

Howard is working hard with world class athletes and ready for anything. He stated "My hands are underestimated" and goes on to say "I'm a mixed martial artist so however the fight plays out I'll be ready for it." It appears Howard is still in search of a worthy nickname. Perhaps he can earn it at this fight.

It should be fun watching these two heavyweights sort it out come fight night. Another fight worth mentioning is taking place at 170lbs between Tucson's Joey "Boom Boom" Rivera of Apex MMA and Jeff Horlacher of The Box. There is a hint of history here as Horlacher once knocked out Eddie Arizmendi Jr. a dear friend and student of Rivera at Apex MMA. This also is a pro bout.

Rivera seeks no revenge. "My goal for this fight is to come out with the win, under any circumstances, whether its a knockout or a submission it doesn't make any difference." Rivera is seeking his third professional victory on record. He is undefeated in two fights so far. He has a very slick style of fighting with control and positioning being his strength.

Horlacher is a veteran of MMA. With a hunger for an exciting match Horlacher called Rivera out. "You might as well just get in there and go for the gold and throw down and give the fans the best show of the night." Quite the line in the sand, this one should be fun.

Also two amateurs with a personal grudge, and a serious bone to pick will square off. While the issue is held close to the vest by both fighters, the bottom line is there is bad blood.

Anthony Birchak of 6th Street Gym is working hard with top notch fighters like UFC veteran Drew Fickett. The emotion of the situation is something he looks to keep under control. "Right now I'm trying to separate the anger from my game plan, is really the issue right now which isn't going to be a big deal. Hopefully I can go in dialed in and come out victorious."

When asked who he was going to fight Nate Vorel of Boxing Inc keeps it simple. "I guess its Anthony Birchak, I can't wait, it's going to be a brawl." He goes on to say "It's going to be on like donkey kong, once that door closes, it's going to be on, that's all I've got to say." Very concise and to the point.

These quotes were taken from the fighters section of the WFF website. There you will find plenty of information regarding not only these fighters but more about the event itself. The entire fight card is listed there, as well as information regarding how to attend or support the event.

Another incentive for fight fans to come out and support the WFF is the opportunity to meet a few UFC standouts. Ryan Bader, C.B. Dalloway, and Efrain Escudero will all be in attendance to meet with local fight fans. If your in the area don't miss the opportunity to meet these top shelf fighters.

As far as the WFF goes, it is new to this game but the founders are not. Al Fuentes has played a pivotal role in the lives or progress of many prestigious athletes and athletic programs both pro and collegiate. He was an accomplished wrestler, and has helped many pro mixed martial artists in their careers. His partner, Thom Ortiz served as the head wrestling coach for ASU for eight years. He has coached many prestigious MMA athletes as well. Now he is not only promoting MMA but a competitor as well.

Their goals are admirable. To quote their philosophy, "Take care of the people that take care of you". This is a sound approach in this rapidly growing sport. What these two men realize is that the warriors sacrificing everything are the true life blood of this sport. Their commitment to the fighter is what will drive them in their efforts.

These gentlemen are striving to set a standard for MMA by prioritizing the forward movement of their fighters careers. In addition they intend to provide funding to keep fighters insured and even offer them opportunities to own a share of the brand itself. What better way to build not only fighter loyalty but also the trust and appreciation of those fight clubs hoping to showcase fighters at WFF shows.

The theories are sound, the intentions are noble, the sky is the limit. For the World Fighting Federation, this may be their inaugural event, but with an approach and philosophies like theirs, it is the beginning of a long journey that looks to be promising. Good luck to them and all the fighters competing at the Battle For The Desert.

Has The Ultimate Fighter Come Full Circle?

In recognition of UFC 100, Inside Fights recently did a three part series outlining the history of modern MMA. The articles pointed to the significant events that contributed to the ascent of this sport, from cage fighting to a true art form, and beyond.

One extremely significant aspect behind the rapid increase in mainstream acceptance was the resounding impact of one fight. One fight was credited as having changed everything with regards to the future of the sport. For those who know, two names only need be uttered: Griffin and Bonnar.

Griffen vs Bonnar, at the inaugural Ultimate Fighter season finale, was an event that reshaped the future of this sport. It is hands down one of the greatest wars the sport has ever seen, and was not only brought to fans by the UFC, but done so live on cable TV. A fortunate fact considering the masses of unsuspecting viewers who had tuned in just because it was free.

This result was also due to a groundbreaking reality TV show conceived by Dana White and the Fertitta brothers. A show that would bring MMA, a sport typically only shown for top dollar on pay per view, into the living rooms of current and future fans every week, again, for free on Spike TV.

What followed was a sharp increase in interest regarding the sport. No longer was it just for die hard fans who had been there since day one, and were happy to pay their hard earned greenbacks to support the sport. Now it was brought to an audience who could simply decide to tune in, as opposed to dropping cash on something they may have been on the fence about.

The concept of the Ultimate Fighter laid the foundation for what was eventually to transpire between Griffin and Bonnar. Not only did their fight change the sport but the events leading up to it were crucial in luring in the fans that eventually would be landed hook line and sinker by the finale itself.

Today, many years later, many Ultimate Fighter seasons later, the allure may have become tarnished with time. What was once a cutting edge concept in MMA has become old hat for even the new fans earned so many years ago. While the TUF show always entertains, either by good fights, or just plain human nature, it has become old news.

While many supremely talented fighters have emerged from the series, it might seem that TUF One raised the bar a bit high. Many times, the allure of the show has been what goes on in between the fights, perhaps more so than the fights themselves.

While that too holds its value, it leads MMA in a contrasting direction. One that lends itself to the arguments against the nature of what truly is a world class sport. Any attention is good though, and more than one character has contributed to the magnetism of MMA for fans who truly can relate to these fighters as human beings.

Today nine TUF seasons later, something very special is happening. The sport is buzzing about something other than the most recent drunken rampage on a TUF episode. The sport is buzzing about a fight.

Leading up to this match up, even the fights between virtually unknown heavyweights have set viewing records for the TUF show. This upcoming fight has the potential to smash all records and more than likely will do so in a decisive manner. If this were a battle between TUF show viewer ratings, this would end in a fast and vicious KO.

The amazing fact of the matter is, this fight is only the third to take place for the entire season of TUF 10, not a finale. If you've been on the space station, or a deserted island, allow me to explain. The controversial newcomer to MMA, Kimbo Slice, is going to square off with decorated MMA veteran Roy Nelson.

What would be just another episode in the road to the final has become one of the most discussed issues of recent memory in the sport. Not since UFC 100 have fans been so interested in a match up. While the ideas and perceptions of the situation may vary, one very important thing must be noted.

The sport of MMA is about to grow yet again in leaps and bounds. When Griffin and Bonnar fought, no one had any idea of who they were or what they could do in this sport. Kimbo's youtube hits could smash most PPV numbers of any fight on record, and Nelson is a highly recognized veteran of the sport.

Now in only the third episode of TUF 10, the two most recognizable names not coaching are going to figure out their strengths and weaknesses. This, not unlike the very first TUF show, will lure in and more than likely engage viewers that were just tuning in to catch a glimpse. Surely, if Kimbo and Nelson can do their part, those fans will also become a bit more dedicated, a bit more involved in the sport.

At the end of the day, this is the biggest event in TUF history since Matt Serra shocked the world by taking out pound for pound champion Georges St. Pierre. While many fans have their opinions of the finer points of this match up, one thing is certain.

MMA will gain from this. This will once again grab a hold of the casual audience and hopefully bring them over to our side of thinking. Hopefully TUF 10 will find a way, like TUF One so many years ago, to further expand the following in this sport.

Joey "Boom Boom" Rivera "Being Good Is Just Not Enough"

When you enter Apex MMA in Tucson, AZ, immediately your met by Joey "Boom Boom" Rivera. He greets you with a smile, a hand shake, and welcomes you into his gym. It's as if you've known him for years.

The atmosphere in the gym is live, students are rolling, working out, even coaching. It's another world once you walk through these doors.

There is a very distinct sound that echoes throughout the gym. That sound is the heartbeat of this sport, and the beat is getting stronger.

Joey is a coach, a fighter, a trainer, and very well spoken about his aspirations. His background is in Judo, but his experiences with many talented fighters have helped him become a mixed martial artist.

When asked about his roots, Joey had this to say. "I started training in Judo in 1997 with Ray Marquez in New Jersey. I moved to Tucson AZ in 2001 and started doing Judo with Steve Owens, the greatest coach of all time. Steve has coached a lot of world class fighters, everybody knows Don Frye. I can't say a bad thing about him, I'm blessed that he is around me."

Joey fights on Oct. 3 for the World Fighting Federation. This is their inaugural event and the WFF is looking to make their mark. They picked an exciting fighter to get the job done in Rivera.

For an example of his slick fighting style, look no further than Rivera vs. Roufus. Joey (2-0) will square of with the seasoned Jeff Horlacher (7-21) at 170lbs.

When asked about his opponent Rivera was nothing but respectful. "Jeff Horlacher's strength I believe is his experience. Hes got a couple good knockouts on his record. He knocked out Eddie Arizmendi Jr. who is one of my best friends and one the best fighters in AZ."

Even with the history, Rivera remains a professional. Does any bad blood exist? "Not necessarily, I'm a professional, I'm doing this because I love it. I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to fight for the the WFF. They said Jeff Horlacher wants to fight you so I jumped on the opportunity. I think I have what it takes to be victorious.

"I think that my style is going to be able to deal with Jeff even though he's a little bit bigger than me. From what I hear he's not great at any one thing but he definitely hits hard.

"I'll take whatever he's gonna give me, whether its a choke or an arm, or if I could punch him into submission I would like to do that. More than anything else, I just want to come out with the W. My strength would probably be the transition, positioning, and control."

On this evening I caught Joey after a "shark tank" training session. He stays in the cage and one of five fresh fighters rotates in constantly pushing him. It boosted his confidence and he showed the signs of a man who had endured a hard day at the office. With the guys roaming Apex, Rivera definitely had to earn it.

Rivera wears many hats. To be a fighter is a lifestyle, to be a coach is to lead and mold fighters, to train is to gain and share valuable knowledge. Some might struggle to aspire to one of these goals. Joey has found a way to incorporate them all and excel in each facet.

His priorities don't lie in the individual tasks more so than they are inspired by his potential of greatness in all areas.

"I have a couple more years left and a small window of opportunity, I'm still young, I have like four or five years left to be able to fight and still be real strong. My goal overall is not to be just a good coach, a lot of people call me a good coach but you know good is not good enough. I would like to be great someday. And I also would like to be a great fighter.

"Being good is just not enough. There are a handful of good guys, and there is an even smaller handful of great guys." With an outlook like that the sky is the limit for Rivera and those he works so hard to train.

It is the people we surround ourselves with that help inspire greatness in us. For Joey it is obvious in his appreciation for those close to him. It was crystal clear watching him talk to fighters leaving the gym. "Get those grades right, don't stay gone so long, see you Monday" This is a leader, and it shows.

He had this to say before closing the interview. "I've been blessed with the graces of god. I'm fortunate to have a great girlfriend, I love my girlfriend she's awesome. I love god and pray every day. And like I said I've been blessed with all the people around me and a lot of great talent, you know really good talent.

"Most of our guys here are from the streets. Some of them are at the U of A but for the most part they are from the streets and this is the way they get out. I've done the same thing, I grew up fairly poor and I'm living my dreams, Ive been blessed."

Sounds a lot like the American dream Joey. Hats off to you for accomplishing not only your goals thus far but for reaching further, and also elevating those around you in the process. You set a great example in this community locally and in the MMA community.

Good luck in your fight with Horlacher at the WFF's Battle For The Desert. For more information about this fight and 11 others going on in Tucson, AZ, check out the World Fighting Federation.

Ryan Couture Is Making His Own Waves in MMA

Ryan Couture has royal MMA blood in his veins.

For a man like Ryan though, that greatness is held high, but no guarantee for his own destiny. Ryan understands his legacy is in his own hands.

Ryan is building a respectable amateur record and getting stronger as he goes along.

Recently, Ryan had an explosive match with a very game Jimmy Spicuzza. The event, Future Stars of MMA was put on by the premier Las Vegas amateur promotion Tuff-N-Uff.

In a fight that ended in the first round, Vegas fight fans were treated to a back and forth, hard fought battle.

In a heated exchange, both fighters landed heavy blows. A right by Spicuzza dropped Couture. It came directly after Couture stunned him with a shot. It was an impressive exchange by both fighters. Ryan found himself on his back and recovered quickly to sneak in a crafty armbar on his opponent.

It lasted one minute 22 seconds, but it spoke volumes about Ryan's heart and abilities. Ryan was able to withstand the onslaught and emerge victorious against an extremely tough fighter.

Ryan had this to say about his most recent victory. "He was real tough, it was a very fun fight. I was thrilled with the win, especially to come from the brink of defeat like I did, I was really fired up about that."

Ryan had nothing but respect and praise for Spicuzza. "I was very impressed with Jimmy. He was a lot faster than I thought he would be and a lot sharper with his hands so hats off to him. I was lucky to catch him when I did."

Ryan also had nothing but kind words about the organization he was fighting for in Tuff-N-Uff.

"They have always been real great to deal with, very professional, very business like. They treat us really well and we are more than happy to put our fighters on their cards because we know they are going to do the right thing by the fighters. They are not out to exploit anybody, they just want to put on a good show and that's exactly what they do."

"Coming up real soon on Oct. 2nd, Ill be fighting for Matt Lindland's Sport Fight promotion." His opponent, "A guy name Nick Albert, he trains with Dan Henderson's Team Quest Camp. He has a strong wrestling background, he should be a tough opponent for me."

With a name like Couture some might ask why not jump right in the sport head first? His thoughts on that issue really display his individualism and the desire to make his mark last, not just make dollar signs based on name recognition.

"In the short term I could probably get a few good paydays but I'm setting myself up for failure because there are promoters that will try and turn me in against their guys that they are trying to build, and just use my name to leapfrog him up."

"I'd rather know that I'm absolutely ready to take that next step, and that if someone wants to throw me in there with a tough guy, that I'm going to be ready to give him a fight and hopefully beat him. I don't think it should just be about my name, it should be about my skills."

Regarding a potential professional debut. "I'm taking it a fight at at time. If I had to ballpark it I would say mid next year."

It should be exciting to watch Ryan climb his way up to compete as a professional.

One might assume it was a given that Ryan would follow in his father's footsteps and become a fighter. It so happens it wasn't necessarily in the cards.

"For a long time I actually said I wouldn't because of all of the expectations that come along with following in his footsteps," he said. "I still don't have any kind of expectation that I'm ever going to, or that anyone really is going to accomplish the kind of things he's done. I think that would be setting the bar too high."

"I've found that it's something I'm passionate about and I think I can make a living doing what I love. I'm pursuing it and as long as I continue to feel that way about it I'm going to keep following that goal."

Fighting isn't the only aspiration Ryan has.

"I'd like to stay involved with the gym and with the family business. That means a lot to me and hopefully I can help be a part of carrying it on once dad's retired and moved on to other things and not as involved. Hopefully I can continue to help out and promote the gym and make it successful."

If you're interested in looking further into Ryan's career as a fighter, he suggested you visit xtremecouture.tv for information on his upcoming fights and many other high-profile fighters competing out of Xtreme Couture.

One final point, one that readers really must get involved with, was his mentioning of the G.I. Foundation event.

"We've got another event coming up in October, the weekend of the 16th, 17, and 18th. We're going to be doing paintball events all three days and also an amateur fight show through Barry and Tuff-N-Uff. Hopefully we'll raise some money for the wounded troops."

For more information on how to support this noble cause visit xtremecouturegifoundation.org

Keep your eyes peeled fight fans. This young man is stepping up. He is making his own mark on this sport. He is slowly but steadily building his fight career up and he is leaving his mark along the way. Don't sleep on Ryan Couture, he is the real deal.

And please support the noble efforts of Xtreme Couture and Tuff-N-Uff in their support of our troops. Get involved fight fans.

The Future Of MMA Shines Bright In Rodney Wallace

Many fighters are ascending within the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Most of them are highly talented, and promising individuals. Amongst those pulling themselves up from the roots of this sport- some grab hold a little tighter than the others- while others climb up the ranks faster.

Very few possess the ability to outshine the competition in this sport permeated with world class athletes.

When you do come across a fighter like this, you can't help but notice. Rodney "Sho Nuff" Wallace appears to be one of these fighters.

Rodney hails from Charlotte NC. He fights for N.C.'s very own Team R.O.C. Their fighters have competed in many prestigious events. Their corner work is impeccable in Wallace's matches. His management team, Fight Legion Inc., is top shelf. They represent many outstanding fighters.

Rodney represents N.C., R.O.C., and Fight Legion well in this sport. They must be proud of this guy considering his apparent talent and skill.

After a short time sitting down and reviewing his fight footage, it was immediately crystal clear; "Sho Nuff" is in the fast lane of MMA. A menacing physique, strong chin, impressive fighting mind, superior ability, and his 9-0 record make it hard to believe otherwise.

In a fight with Carlos Zavallos at The Revolution Fighting Championships in Miami, FL, Wallace left a lasting impression. Not only on his opponent, but everyone watching.

It took longer to announce the fighters than it did for Wallace to end it.

With a razor sharp, lightning fast combo, Wallace dropped Zavallos and the ref immediately stopped the fight. It might have lasted nine seconds tops. Needless to say, it was very impressive.

More recently, Wallace competed for Vendetta Fighting Championships. A "Night of Vengeance" was the card; it was held in Aruba. He competed in an eight man light heavyweight tournament.

Winning a fight is one thing, but a tournament is quite another. Only the best emerge victorious in any tournament style event.

Wallace fought three times on this night, and his quality showed as he stopped two of his opponents and took the other to a unanimous decision. After a hard fought decision with Gregory Milliard, Wallace went on to compete for a round and a half more with Aaron Stark before forcing him submission with the kimura.

It's worth noting, the kimura was sunk mere seconds after Stark decided to get into a conversation with Wallace's corner while the two were grappling. A costly mistake, as that one opening was all Wallace needed to sink the submission.

Finally, after winning two matches, Wallace entered the cage with Antwain Britt. This is where it gets really good. Even after two hard fought matches, Wallace was still crisp and dangerous.

In his finest display of the night, "Sho Nuff" first rocked his opponent with a solid left, then dominated him on the ground and pounded his ribs. When Britt attempted to stand up, Wallace snatched the kimura and as Britt attempted to roll out of it, Wallace transitioned to an arm bar.

Slick is all that can describe it.

An absolute ice cold display of diversity, precision, and effectiveness was on display in Aruba. The future was on on display as well. This generation has witnessed the evolution of combat sports. With guys like Georges St. Pierre's setting the bar with his dominance on every level, young talent is taking notice.

It takes a true student of the idea of mixed martial arts to excel in this sport today. Wallace exemplifies that point. This guy can bang, throw you, take you down, ground and pound, or submit you. All the while looking like its all just a day at the office.

Extremely impressive is Rodney Wallace.

If you listen real close, you can hear him demanding his chance to make his mark on the sport. As a matter of fact, you wont be able to miss it. When it happens it will be without question.

When his time comes, it will be very interesting to see how he fares against top tier opponents on the big stage. After watching Mr. Wallace fight, the question I have is, how will that top tier talent fare against him?

That may be the more important question.

Meet TUF 10 Cast Member Darrill Schoonover

Darrill Schoonover wasn't the biggest guy to walk through the door to The Ultimate Fighter Season 10, but his record spoke for itself.

With a flawless 10-0 record and a Shark Fights Heavyweight belt on his resume, it is clear Shoonover belonged there as much as anyone.

After a lengthy screening process of proving himself both physically and mentally, Darrill was accepted to fight for a chance to win a six-figure contract in the UFC on TUF 10 on Spike TV. The winners of previous TUF shows have gone on to win UFC gold.

Now 24, he started focusing on MMA when he was 17. Schoonover first started training in Las Cruces, N.M., and now fights out of Texas. He spends his spare time coaching family and friends in various combat sports.

Now Darrill awaits the revealing of his reality show. He awaits our realization of results he already knows. It is a tangled web that made for an interesting interview, but Schoonover played it perfectly.

Schoonover is optimistic about the heavyweight landscape. Even though fighting at heavyweight is his potential ticket in to the UFC, he feels his future may lie elsewhere.

"The heavyweight division isn't real stacked, that's why I think I have a good opportunity in the UFC with the heavyweights. At the same time I do want to get back down to 205 and start fighting at a lighter weight, because those guys are so damn big."

Darrill is obviously up for great challenges moving down to 205 and he knows it.

"I think 205 is the most stacked division right now."

It is encouraging to hear him talk about making his mark by tackling what is the toughest division in the sport.

This is all of course pending results of the show that in no way shape nor form was Darrill permitted to allude to.

His confidence would leave one to believe that someday, no matter the capacity, fans will have a chance to see him fight in the UFC.

Still though, Schoonover is taking it one day at at time. "Right now, I just want to fight whoever they put me up against. I don't care if they call me up on short notice, you know whatever, I just want to go up there and show what I can do." That is the mark of a warrior.

Fighting out of Fighters Forge in Capperas Cove in the Lone Star State of Texas, Darrill is capable and confident. The El Paso native comes across as humble yet hungry. The great people of Texas must be proud.

Schoonover stands 6'2" and weighs in around 250. His perfect record has come by way of stoppage in every match. Half due to strikes, half due to submission. Still, he is quick to point out "I love boxing more than anything."

Darrill's love for boxing does not limit his approach by any means. He considers himself a "gamer." "Whenever I have to fight, I always have a game plan, I plan specifically for that guy. That's why I'm half and half on my record."

Darrill has trained in Judo and as mentioned loves to stand up. He has his sights on improving a specific aspect of his game though. "I think I need to get my wrestling better." This is an area that he felt he improved upon during his time filming TUF 10.

Fighting on Team Rashad, Schoonover was able to gain useful knowledge from the former UFC LHW Champ. "I learned a lot, I learned a lot of different ground and pound, my wrestling got better just working with him. He is amazing."

With regards to his housemates, Schoonover was diplomatic when asked about the ever-present wild-man syndrome that perennially permeates the TUF house.

After a deep groan, he just said, "You know, Wes Sims is a good guy, but whenever that camera is running, that's when he wants to act all crazy." It should be fun to watch that unfold.

For a guy who has fought at 205, this seemed like quite a challenge to take on. What drove Schoonover to press on was his passion for victory. His winning spirit was apparent in one of his final comments.

"You know I just hate to lose, I just tell myself I'm going to win, I'm going to win, I'm going to win. I went in there and I saw everybody and saw how much bigger a few of those guys were, I just kept telling myself no matter what I'm going to go balls out and that's all I can say I did."

Darrill, that's all anyone can ask of any fighter. It has served you well thus far and fight fans look forward to seeing how you do on the show.

If there is one thing MMA has taught us, it is that size isn't everything, and in many cases, the smaller gentlemen are the ones you need to watch out for. Your coach could tell you something about that, I'm sure.

After a grueling tour of duty on TUF 10, Schoonover was happy to return home to those he missed most while away, his family and friends. "The first thing I did when I got home was watched UFC 100 with my uncle; it was my uncle's birthday."

A fine end to the chance of a lifetime, huh? Sitting down to take in a fight between the two best fighters in a division you may have just fought your way into.

The calm after the storm. Now the real fun begins. With the filming of the show behind him, it is time to show the world how it unfolded behind closed doors.

Will Schoonover come out on top, will his heart and warrior's spirit guide him through the turbulent waters of TUF 10?

Tune in to Spike TV Wednesday nights and see how it goes. It should be interesting when the big boys get to banging each other around. Don't miss it.

A Note to Aspiring MMA Journalists: Put Your Writing Where Your Mouth Is

Learning on the fly is par for the course for many in this sport. The sport itself has reached peaks no one ever would have imagined.

What once were street fighters, bar brawlers, and mouth-breathing tough guys, have become highly trained, specialized combatants.

While you and I recognize these high-profile athletes as fighters, icons, legends, or even heels, they are humans just the same. They walk this earth just like us, and have to put their pants on one leg at at time.

As journalists, we have the luxury of displaying both our expertise, or in some cases lack there of, as well as our opinions. One fail safe we have is the buffer of the Internet.

Many of us are content to sit behind our keyboard and type away highly judgemental and biased points of view with the notion that we are insulated from those we pass judgement against.

We are learning on the fly just as the rest of the sport is. Just as Brock Lesnar must learn to curb his approach and delivery when promoting his fights, we must learn to humble ourselves into realizing our words hold weight.

Over the last year or so, I have found myself catapulted from a ranting and raving lunatic about everything I could get my mind around to a half way viable MMA writer.

In that time, I have shared more than one opinion discrediting or even disrespecting certain fighters or MMA concepts. I have come to a distinct realization during this journey.

If I am ever to truly realize my potential and attain the pinnacle of my dreams, it will involve my direct interaction in this world of MMA. Up to and including coming face to face with those I so readily passed judgement against.

For example, over dinner with Team Don Frye, I made the mistake of leaning on the ever popular judgement of Lesnar's post UFC 100 antics. As fate would have it, Lesnar once visited this camp.

One of the guys I was sitting with was content to point out to me that Brock had trained with them and was nothing short of a gentlemen and a very classy guy. This comment was made very curt and to the point so as to let me know how out of line I really was making such assumptions about an iconic figure in this sport.

More recently, upon leaving a local MMA event, I was followed out the door by another well known fighter. It just so happens that Junie Browning was at this event as a publicity booster. We happened to be leaving the event at the same time.

Now I have had more than my fair share of opinions regarding Mr. Browning. Many of which were and still are well deserved based on his prior actions. All that said, it turns out the guy was quite an agreeable person.

Somehow it was not so easy to just say screw Junie, he's a tool, once I had to look him in the eye. For those of you who jump to point to intimidation, I'm no cupcake and don't bow down easily. Fear of a simple confrontation is not motivation to keep me from speaking my mind.

It was the realization that I had forgone the idea that this was a man, whom I may very well come face to face with someday, that I could use as a target to spout my self righteous opinion about. That realization is ringing more true every day.

So here is my advice, and request if you will. I like to think I live my life by a rule. I would never say something about someone that I don't have the spine to say to their face. While it has served me well in my personal life, I have allowed the rule to slip in my writing.

Just be careful what it is you say and how you say it is all. There may come a day that your aspirations carry you right to a face to face conversation with someone you once used as a scapegoat to boost up your opinions.

I assure you from first hand knowledge this is quite an uncomfortable feeling. Hopefully this advice can save you the embarrassment of having to either eat your words or worst yet pretend you never said them.
