The Top 10 List: Wrestling's Greatest Rivalries

Welcome to another edition of The Top 10 List with yours truly. This week we will focus on the greatest rivalries wrestling has ever seen. Remember this is my opinion, and good constructive criticism is welcome. Saying “damn dude, The Outsiders? No way!” is good with me. But saying “Did you fall and hit your head on a rock?” is stupid, and it makes you look stupid.

When a guy takes time to write his OPINION in an article, you have every right to voice your OPINION back. If you agree or disagree, whatever it may be, but saying negative things towards the writer and not the article is a joke. Anyway, I needed to get that out of the way, as I know many agree with that statement, and it goes for everyone’s articles.

Now onto the list, yes it's called The Top 10. But I do include 15, five extra. No explanation on why that five is there, they’re just put in to show who almost made the list.

NOTE: These opinions of mine are about impact just as much as they are about entertainment.

15) KANE vs. UNDERTAKER
14) RIC FLAIR vs. DUSTY RHODES
13) BRET HART vs. SHAWN MICHAELS
12) THE HARDYZ vs. THE DUDLEYS vs. EDGE & CHRISTIAN
11) BRET HART vs. STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN

10) HOLLYWOOD HOGAN vs. GOLDBERG
Notable Match: WCW Nitro, WCW World Heavyweight Championship, 7/6/98
Rookie Bill Goldberg had an undefeated streak going, and was hotter than hell. Nitro was notorious for putting on pay-per-view, and this case WrestleMania/Starrcade, caliber matches.

Amazingly Goldberg ran through Hollywood Hogan and won the WCW Championship. An amazing experience for the wrestling fans. Goldberg blew up super fast, went straight to the top and helped garner WCW’s five and six scale ratings. Pitting the young, unstoppable force against the most well-known famous heel was a given. The fact that it happened on free television is a topic that is still argued to this day.

Personally, I liked the idea, I didn’t have to pay out the $29.99 for the PPV. A great feud nonetheless and key point in the Monday Night Wars.

9) TRIPLE H vs. SHAWN MICHAELS
Armageddon, World Heavyweight Championship, Three Stages of Hell match, 12/15/02

Real life best friends and Shawn Michaels only four months back from an over four year absence from performing, many wondered if he could handle the dreaded Three Stages of Hell match. Which consisted of three back to back to back matches with no breaks in between. A street fight, a cage match and a ladder match.

HBK performed just as he knows how and The Showstopper stole the show. Although he came up short to the Game, the match was great. All of their matches were great together. Michaels back from injury he trusted HHH to work with, thinking he would only have one last match, at SummerSlam the same year. HHH did his job proving that HBK could still go, and go damn hard for that matter.

After the successful and amazing angle, HBK stayed on full time and has been since. Another prime example of how best friends work so well together, as they put everything they got into it, and their love for the business bleeds between them.

8) HOLLYWOOD HOGAN vs. STING
Notable Match: Starrcade 97, WCW World Heavyweight Championship, 12/28/97

In the world of wrestling, opposites attract and they attract very well. Back in 1997 Hulk Hogan, now known as Hollywood Hogan was in full heel mode as the head leader of the New World Order (nWo) super stable.

When it seemed that the nWo had completely taken over WCW and wiped out all of it’s wrestlers, an old, familiar face appeared in the rafters. The man was Sting. Sting who used to sport a short, spiked blond haircut and a clean shave, with bright color trunks and face paint designs, had been reinvented.

Now donning all black, with long black hair, and white face paint covering his entire face, he seemed like a man possessed. Playing mind games with Hogan and the rest of the nWo Sting would watch in the rafters of the building, occasionally sending a vulture down to spook the nWo, but just a blank stare with his black eyes was enough to eat away at Hogan.

The rivalry and build-up to their Starrcade ‘97 match was over a year long. Never wrestling each other until their, and barely even coming in physical contact, the idea was red hot. Everybody wanted to see Sting take out the loud, flamboyant Hogan. Although the match itself had a botched ending, the feud was impeccable and so original that it will be remembered forever.

7) THE UNDERTAKER vs. MANKIND
Notable Match: King of the Ring, Hell in a Cell, 6/28/98

When the third Hell in a Cell was announced, the anticipation started immediately. Although it happened over 10 years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday. Anybody and everybody who knew wrestling, knew who Mankind was and what he was capable, or should I say willing, of doing to himself.

And the Hell in a Cell with Mankind, destined to be a classic. Named by many as the best HiaC of all time, these two beat each other senseless. Taking falls from the top and through the top. The buildup was overly exciting, as both Undertaker and Mankind were masters of mind games.

With the Attitude Era underway, this was another part of the Era that made it unique. More weapons and more blood. A match and rivalry that set the standard for all hardcore-style matches to come.

6) HULK HOGAN vs. ULTIMATE WARRIOR
Notable Match: WrestleMania VI, WWE Championship/Intercontinental Championship, 4/1/90.

When you think Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan, you think back to WrestleMania VI and the huge passing of the torch. As the almighty, immortal Hulk Hogan put Warrior over clean. This event was so huge, it shocked the world and shook it’s very foundation . Considered one of the most famous matches in history, billed as “The Ultimate Challenge.” Although things didn’t exactly go so well with Warrior following the event, but that is an entirely different story.

5) HULK HOGAN vs. ANDRE THE GIANT
Notable Match: WrestleMania III, WWE Championship, 3/29/87

Hogan/Andre, WrestleMania III, an attendance of 93,173, the largest recorded attendance for a live indoor sporting event in North America and the largest paying crowd in the history of professional wrestling. The kickoff of the 1980s wrestling boom. The contenders were huge, the match was huge, the crowd was huge.

The “slam heard around the world” when Hogan scooped slammed Andre and hit the leg drop for the win. An event still talked about today, more than 20 years later, and will be talked about for another 20 years. This event proved that professional wrestling is here, and it is here to stay, whether the public liked it or not.

4) RIC FLAIR vs. RICKY STEAMBOAT
Notable Match: Wrestle War, NWA World Heavyweight Championship, 5/7/89

A rivalry that lasted over 15 years, and produced some of the best matches in 80's wrestling. These two had magic together, simply magical. Even so, a lot of people would say that their '89 Wrestle War match was the greatest match of all time. Now, that’s saying something.

Any older or classic fan will tell you they remember Flair/Steamboat and they will tell you they loved it. This brought rivalries to a whole new level. Two of the hardest workers of their time, they put their heart and soul, blood, sweat, and tears into their matches and they were amazing to say the least.

3) STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN vs. MR. MCMAHON
Notable Event: WWE RAW, “Easy way/Hard way”speech, 3/30/98

Because I’m such a mark for the in-ring wrestling, this comes in at No 3. Where it could be argued as No. 2. And if impact didn’t play such a huge and important role in this list, it could even be at No. 1.

The WWE was getting beat down severely by WCW and kicked off the best period in wrestling; the Attitude Era. The episode of RAW that aired the night after WrestleMania 14, McMahon presented Austin the title and gave his “Easy way/Hard way” speech.

McMahon stated that Austin needed to follow rules better and be a better employee. Austin responded with a middle finger and a Stone Cold Stunner to the boss. Kicking of and ushering in the Attitude Era in the process. The Attitude Era was a giant, steaming Locomotive and Austin/McMahon was it’s Conductor. The rivalry was known as the Austin/McMahon feud..

These two together were the sole performers that carried the WWE through it’s fight. Anytime Vince and Austin were in the same ring, you could absolutely feel the electricity. This feud is the epitome of wrestling chemistry.

At the risk of sounding repetitive; week after week after week after week millions and millions tuned in to RAW is WAR to see what would happened next between these two. The typical evil boss vs. the rebel employee. An amazing feud that will never ever be duplicated, copied or topped for as long as wrestling lives.

2) THE ROCK vs. STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN
Notable Match: WrestleMania X7, WWE Championship, 4/1/01

Two men that invigorated and revamped the wrestling world. The best rivalry in history. The two biggest names in wrestling. Wrestling was at it’s peak and the WWE was reigning king after just defeating and purchasing rivals WCW and ECW. Rock and Stone Cold headlined three WrestleMania’s together. A classic each time.

Ask any wrestling fan who was a fan in the past 10 years and nine out of 10 will say the best rivalry? Stone Cold vs. The Rock. They had great in ring chemistry and great promo and mic chemistry. These two were destined to wrestle and hit their peak at the same time. When we are older, in our '60s, '70s, even '80s if we look back and think wrestling memories, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin will for sure come to mind. Now that is and impact, and that is what wrestling is all about.

1) WWE vs. WCW
Notable Event: WWE/WCW Simulcast, The Final Nitro, 3/26/01

One thing Vince McMahon has is balls. This feud was more between Ted Turner and McMahon. Turner and McMahon Sr. crossed paths in the past and never got along too well. But on a day referred by the wrestling world as Black Saturday ignited the fuel. It was the day McMahon and the WWE took over the Saturday night time slots on Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) that had been home to Georgia Championship Wrestling (GCW).

After a stint in court between McMahon and Turner, McMahon decided to sell the company back to Jim Crockett and Turner bought it from him. Turner named his wrestling company WCW. Determined to take out his rival, Vince McMahon, Turner created a WCW show and put it head-to-head with WWE on Monday nights WCW began beating WWE, and dominated them in the ratings for 83 weeks straight. An event that almost put the WWE out of business forever.

But McMahon is one tough guy and he fought back against the billionaire. What made this so great was the company’s were fighting so hard and putting 150% into their respecitve products. And the wrestling world sat back and got to enjoy it all. Enjoying the best period in pro wrestling history, every week were two amazing shows, as both were really fighting for their place.

The world went crazy for this '90s wrestling boom. Eventually, the WWE started dominating the WCW and only got better and better and better. McMahon had the last laugh as in March of 2001 he purchased WCW and became the Czar of Wrestling.

The Top 10 List: Pro Wrestling Tag Teams

Welcome to the third Edition of TOP 10 LIST. This week we examine the once flourishing and exciting turned sour and boring—Tag Team Division. Because today's tag team division in both WWE and TNA are a sad sight and a slap in the face of the great tag teams of yesterday, this list isn't only current teams but past also.

Yes this is my opinion, as it should be, so there's no reason to get fussy just because you don't agree. This also doesn't include teams that tagged together on too few occasions, such as Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage or Ric Flair and Razor Ramon. Anyway, lets get to it..

15-11:
15) Von Erichs
14) Edge & Christian
13) Harlem Heat
12) New Age Outlaws
11) Demolition

10) ROCK 'N' SOCK CONNECTION
TAG TITLES WON: Three

When people say opposites attract; here is the perfect example. Both of these guys were well over and former WWE Champions and were both loved by the fans. We knew we would be in for some good matches when these two were together, but their chemistry surprised many. They performed well together and pulled out some great edge-of-your-seat moments.

9) SHAWN MICHAELS & DIESEL
TAG TITLES WON: Two

Michaels was home one weekend and saw Kevin Nash, then known as Vinnie Vegas, on WCW Saturday Night. Nash had Shawn laughing out loud. He immediately asked a friend and WWE co-worker, John Laurinitis if he knew anything about the big guy.

Turned out John knew Nash personally, and called him on the phone, Nash got his release from WCW and headed right into WWE as HBK's body guard, Diesel. Diesel and Michaels became the best big man/little man team in WWE history, and their double-team repertoire was endless.

8) STEINER BROTHERS.
TAG TITLES WON: 14

Tag team of the year in both 1990 and 1993. 1991 five-star match with Sting and Brian Pillman vs. Ric Flair, Larry Zbyszko, Barry Windham and Sid Vicious. And Match of the Year 1991; vs. Hiroshi Hase and Kensuke Sasaki at the WCW/NJPW Supershow. 14 recognized tag titles together during their 19 year career. Their stats say it all, add in incredible charisma, two of the most decorated and unique characters in the business, and their brothers? You just can’t go wrong with the Steiner Brothers.

7) THE ROCKERS
TAG TITLES WON: Six

The team of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty invented the high-flyer tag-team style. They won the WWE Tag Titles but during the taping, the ring ropes broke and the match was never aired. Therefore, the win never hit the books.

Their iconic break-up on the Barbershop, launched the career of the greatest in-ring entertainer of all time, Shawn Michaels. Although not together anymore, their style lives on through teams such as the Hardy Boys, and the Motor City Machine Guns.

6) THE HART FOUNDATION
TAG TITLES WON: Two

The original Hart Foundation tag team of Bret "Hitman" Hart and Jim "Anvil" Neidhart. They achieved success differently than most. When together in the mid-to-late 80's, these two brought back tag team wrestling with a vengeance.

Although there would still be tag matches, Vince McMahon was firmly against tag teams who solely worked together, and didn’t care much for them at the time, until these two proved him wrong. And they accomplished this in the ring. There has been many versions of the Hart Foundation, but the Hitman and the Anvil were the original, and brought tag teams back to life.

5) DUDLEY BOYS
TAG TITLES WON: 21

21 time World Tag Team Champions. The best hardcore, and arguably the best tag team of all time. Consecutive, 2000 and 2001, Match of the Year awards. Brother Ray (Bubba Ray) and Brother D’Von, have done it all together. Kings of the WWE tag team division with catchphrases such as “D’Von, Get the table!” And reigning champions in ECW, Japan, WWE and TNA. The kings of hardcore, can put on one hell of a match, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Doing it all with the best tag team finisher in wrestling; The 3-D.

4) D-GENERATION X
TAG TITLES WON: Zero

Although DX was a stable, the original two active members (and occasionally still) were Shawn Michaels and Triple H. This being Michaels third time on the list, proves why he is the best entertainer of all time. The second team on the list with no World Tag Titles won, proves that the Gold doesn’t prove it all.

These two are multiple time World Champions alone, 16 combined to be exact, this is a true “super tag team”, together they are unstoppable. Helping carry the WWE and taking it off it’s death bed with the creation of D-Generation X, HBK and HHH are key players in the world of wrestling, and have been ruling for over a decade.

3) HARDY BOYZ
TAG TITLES WON: Eight

The Hardy Boyz are not my favorite wrestlers by any means, but respect is given where respect is due. And these two, invigorated and rebooted the tag team division. When the Dudley’s had their Tag Team matches of the year, these two were their opponents. Both hugely over in their own rights, they still have what it takes to put on a great show.

Wrestling fans, new and old, around the world, know the Hardy Boyz, and they have plenty of gas left in the tank.

2) ROAD WARRIORS
TAG TITLES WON: 11

If a book were written on tag team wrestling, these two, also known as the Legion of Doom, Animal & Hawk, would have to grace the cover. You couldn’t talk tag team history without the Road Warriors. Tag Team of the Year 1982, 1984, 1985. Feud of the Year in 1987 along with the Super Powers vs. the Four Horsemen. Also named the No. 1 Tag Team of All Time.

What else is there to say? They absolutely made tag team wrestling. Many doubt the very existence, including the success of tag team wrestling, if it wasn’t for the Road Warriors. There is too much to say about these legendary contenders, but to keep it short and simple, their legacy will live on forever in Pro-wrestling.

1) THE OUTSIDERS
TAG TITLES WON: Six

Con + tro + versy = The Outsiders. The team of Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. These two are the best workers, as a duo, in wrestling. Being best friends in real life, it bleeds through in the ring. People say their lazy, get hurt all the time, blah blah. But, even wrestlers who don’t necessarily like The Outsiders, which is most of them, respect what they can do together in the ring.

They compliment each other's styles so well, and have teamed so many times that it all comes natural. These two together have been targets of more controversy than most wrestling locker rooms combined. They don’t care, and are sure as hell not afraid to show it. Two intelligent minds for the business, the two main contributors to the most successful angle in wrestling history, the nWo. Superstars in their own right, but legends together. Long live The Outsiders.

Please leave in the comments your top 10, or top five, tag teams. And thanks for reading another addition of the Top 10.

WWE Raw 9/15/08 Preview

September 15, 2008
Memphis, TN
LIVE: 9pm ET/8pm CT

“Jailhouse Rock.” The song is one of Elvis’ greatest and most enduring hits. The chart-topper also proves a fitting theme when Raw rolls into Presley’s adopted hometown on Monday night.

After all, current World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho and his rival CM Punk will climb within the prison-like confines of a 15-foot high, steel cage for what promises to be one rockin’ title match.

After being unable to compete in the World Heavyweight Championship Scramble Match at Unforgiven, thanks to an attack by Randy Orton and his band of multi-generational Superstars, the Straightedge Superstar will undoubtedly have redemption on his mind.

For his part, Jericho will be defending a title that he feels he earned justly and rightly deserves. One week after Unforgiven, neither man will be 100 percent, but that won’t keep them from giving every last ounce of themselves to be called World Heavyweight Champion.

Will Punk be able to make his opponent “Surrender”? Or will Jericho send Punk packing to the “Heartbreak Hotel”?

In other Raw action, Kane is eager to battle his latest “target,” Rey Mysterio in the shadow of Graceland. During their confrontation last week, the Big Red Monster supposedly dropped a clue to his strange actions as of late when he pulled out his old mask, slipped it on and laughed demonically.

What more can Rey, and the WWE Universe, expect to learn about Kane’s bizarre behavior Monday night? “Suspicious Minds” want to know! Who will prevail in their one-on-one encounter?

And what are we to make of the cast of multi-generational Superstars, World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase and Manu, the son of Afa from the Wild Samoans? While this group certainly has things “All Shook Up,” the WWE Universe wants to know what their plans are for Raw, and who will be next to feel their wrath?

To find out the answers to these questions and more, make sure to tune in to Monday Night Raw at 9 pm Eastern/8 pm Central only on USA Network.

----

Confirmed Matches:

Kane vs. Rey Mysterio

World Heavyweight Championship:
Steel Cage Match:
Chris Jericho(c) vs. CM Punk

Mick Foley Is TNA

Yesterday, Mick Foley's representatives confirmed his departure from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Foley himself made a quick comment, stating that he has signed a deal with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). He ended his short message with the following words:

"See you at the Impact Zone!"

People have mixed reactions for Foley going to TNA. Some claim that it will hurt his legacy and it is pointless for him to fight anymore. But one thing everybody, being his fan or not, must respect about Mick Foley is his passion for the business.

He loves wrestling; it's obvious. Every time he's "hung the boots up" and dabbled in different business endeavors, he always gets drawn right back in.

Mick Foley had done so much for this business and helped usher in wrestling's peak period; the Attitude Era. He revolutionized the business, following in his idol Terry Funk's footsteps.

Foley brought the new wave of hardcore to the table, and being one of the kindest men I have ever met in the business, he deserves to do whatever he chooses. If he is unhappy with WWE, and feels he can bring positive things to TNA, then so be it. To hell with everybody claiming he's soiling his legacy by turning his back on the WWE.

Foley called into the Opie & Anthony radio show earlier today and discussed his departure. He confirmed he has been upset with Vince McMahon yelling at him over the headset. Apparently, Foley was told that Vince was being nicer to him than most. But, the last straw was Vince yelling at him during Edge and Vickie's wedding.

There is NO WAY Foley is going to make the kind of impact the Outsiders, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, did in WCW. He knows this; he's older and isn't expecting to flip TNA upside down. He feels that he's a good aspect and can bring good things to the table to help TNA grow.

Anybody with a problem with that is just a jackass. For all the things Foley has down for the wrestling fans, and the hell he's put his body through, I say...

GOOD LUCK FOLEY!

Kane's Final Run Will Be Memorable

Glen Jacobs made his professional wrestling debut in 1993 in WCW as Bruiser Mastino. He had his fair share of corny gimmicks, traveling back and forth from US to Japan, and from federation to federation—just like most other wrestlers you see today.

But the man we know as Kane, the brother of the legendary Undertaker, debuted in October, 1997.

Kane has had one hell of a career, and one of the most noteworthy aspects of his career is his injury list, or lack thereof. The only injury off the top of my head is the hand injury back in 1999. This guy rarely gets hurt, he's like a machine—or should I say like a big red machine. Dumb joke.

Although, Kane isn't exactly unfamiliar with injury because he can dish out some serious punishment to his opponents. It seems the older he has gotten, the stiffer his moves have been, and I think it's absolutely great.

He also held the WWE Championship one time, only to lose it the next night. Still, he has the prestigious title of "former WWE Champion" under his belt, which sounds good for anybody.

Now, anybody who has a brother, younger or older, knows you fight. It happens, it's part of growing up together. Kane's got an older brother and they're no exception—they've been fighting off and on for years. And their bouts make you and your sibling's fights look like a slow-dance at a high school prom.

After a lengthy, strong, awesome career, I think Kane's going to be hanging up the boots for good soon. He's in his low 40s, and even if your'e tough enough to survive your house burning down while you stay inside, age is going to catch up to you. Especially after a 15+ year career.

I honestly think that where they took the burlap sack angle (Rey Mysterio) was not what the bookers and writers originally intended. The week he first turned heel and attacked Michael Cole, I knew he was stepping up for something big. The big push he's getting is going to be his last big run.

He's put on a great show over the years and has been very entertaining to all of us. A veteran like Kane deserves to hold the World Championship if this is his last run. There's not a wrestling fan out there that says "I don't like Kane." At least I've never heard it.

The week after his heel turn, he showed up with the burlap sack. My original thought was it was his mask inside, and it got me and the rest of the wrestling world extremely excited.

I had a whole vision of what was going to happen for Kane's last run.

He was going to lose for a few more weeks and keep getting frustrated over it. Then he was to pull out his mask, put it on, and he would become unstoppable. Almost like Festus and the ring bell on SmackDown, but no ridiculous faces or screaming and with credibility.

He was to start running through all opponents and eventually get the the World Champ and beat him for the title. Then he'd have a few month run with the championship, until he lost and retired at WrestleMania 25. Sounded good to me, but obviously it didn't happen.

No, instead he pulls out Rey Mysterio's mask. I don't like Mysterio. Never did, ever since WCW. I don't like high-flyers unless they can do more styles with it. I'm more with the strength styles and the technical styles. When Mysterio's in the ring, he's two feet smaller and 100 lbs less than his opponent.

He flies around from one turnbuckle to the next landing on guys that should catch him and plant him in the ground. My favorite thing he's ever done was get Jackknifed by Kevin Nash in WCW and folded in half twice.

Just kidding, I think he got injured pretty damn badly then. But enough ranting on the wrestler I dislike the most out of all the wrestlers today.

Hopefully this mask thing has a short run and fades away, so Kane can finally get his last run, and his well-deserved World Championship. I don't think anyone would disagree about it.

Kane's body has changed, and you can see he is in pain sometimes in the ring. But he's got that last run in him, and I think now's the time for him to step up and get that championship to go out on top.

Ask And You Shall Recieve: The INTRO

I do alot of wrestling research, and have been a fan for over half my life. Started watching in summer of '96, and have been watching ever since.

Although it's only been 12 years, I do lots of research and watching, and have a pretty good knowledge, and what i do not know, i can usually find.

What i would like to do with this column is and "Ask and Answer" format.

Send me any and all of your wrestling questions, from today, the past, even opinions.

Any questions will be answered. IE - 'When the Outsiders debuted in 1996 and created the nWo, I heard the 3rd man was supposed to be another HUGE WCW name, who was it?' -or- 'Who do you think is going to dethrone Triple H for the WWE Championship?'

If i get enough questions, and they continue to come in, then on a weekly basis i will write another issue, addressing all questions.

Also, I have a few friends who are pro wrestling writers, or have been at some big wrestling sites. Anything i can't answer, ill pass to them and we'll get it done.

Hopefully, this catches on. If not, oh well.

SO ASK YOUR QUESTIONS!

Click my profile and send them there. Under Bulletins. After one week, ill post the first edition, with all the answers. I'll answer any question to the best I can. Doesn't matter if you have one question or 10.
