Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II, Week Eight

Welcome friends to the ninth edition of Brett Favre vs Aaron Rodgers II. In this week's edition I will cover the performances of the two big arm quarterbacks in the unofficial "Favre Bowl II". The game in Minnesota was a mere prelude to the most anticipated regular season game in NFL history.

But first let's go over a quick recap if last week's match. Aaron Rodgers cut into Favre's seemingly insurmountable lead with a huge performance against Cleveland. As it stands, Favre was up 5-2.

Shall we?

Minnesota Vikings 38
Green Bay Packers 26

Brett Favre: 17-28, 244 yards, four TDs

The Good: I can't imagine the butterflies Brett Favre had as he was being introduced at Lambeau Field. Whatever he felt, it certainly didn't show. Brett Favre not only played well on his homecoming, but he completely dominated.

Brett Favre started the game as accurately as possible. Leading two touchdown drives against the Packers defense. The offensive line gave Favre enough time to throw the ball all day as he was not sacked all night.

Favre was clutch when he needed to be. His 51-yard touchdown pass to Percy Harvin appeared to have clinched the win, if not for the horrid Vikings defense. It took Favre's fourth touchdown pass to really clinch the game.

Favre's four touchdown night tied him with Dan Marino for the most four touchdown games in NFL history.

The Bad: When he first stepped onto the field, he was booed harder than I've ever heard a single player get booed at any stadium anywhere. That's about all the bad that happened for Favre.

Aaron Rodgers: 26-42, 287 yards, three TDs

The Good: Aaron Rodgers showed us that he can light up good defenses as well as bad ones. His second half was one of the most explosive of his career. Rodgers kept plays alive despite a lack of protection.

Rodgers got a lot of help from his receivers, as they earned lots of YAC. His three second half touchdowns nearly brought the Packers back after being down 24-3 following Favre's first second half drive.

Rodgers was an accurate passer, and played just about as well as he could. He didn't get much help from his defense, or his offensive line.

The Bad: The plague of Aaron Rodgers' young career has been his inability to get rid of the ball in a timely manner. In this game, it was no different. In the first half, Rodgers' offense simply could not produce.

In the second half Rodgers got his act together and played flawless. However, that terrible first half may have kept the Packers from stealing this one from Minnesota.

The Pick

This was one of the most exciting games I have seen in a long time. Favre and Rodgers were in a shoot-out when the fourth quarter was starting. I was back and fourth with my decision all game.

Before Favre's fourth touchdown pass, the pick was Rodgers. But, after that touchdown pass, it was 50-50.

Whenever it is 50-50 like this, it goes to the victor. And the winner of Favre bowl II, and the pick for this week, is Brett Favre.

Brett Favre takes another commanding lead on Rodgers as he leads the series 6-2.

A look ahead...

Aaron Rodgers gets to eat into Favre's lead next week as the Vikings have a bye week. The Packers get another easy test as they face the win-less Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II, Week Seven

Welcome back friends to the seventh edition of Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II. Last week Brett Favre's game-winning drive against the Ravens solidified his 5-1 lead over Aaron Rodgers.

This past week was filled with big plays and drama for our competing quarterbacks. Again I must apologize for the late post—real life seems to take priority over Bleacher Report most of the time. But, right here and now, let's analyze.

Minnesota Vikings 17
Pittsburgh Steelers 27

Brett Favre: 33-50, 334 yards, 1 INT

The Good: With Adrian Peterson as useful as the appendix, Brett Favre was called upon to carry his team to victory again against the Steelers. Favre had a season-high 33 completions out of a ridiculous 50 attempts.

Favre was very accurate through much of the game. He did not get much protection, but when he did he found the open man. He avoided costly mistakes against one of the best defenses in the league.

Favre put his team in position to win the game, until it got to the red zone. The Vikings offense was 1-5 in red zone trips. That is unacceptable if you want to win games in the NFL.

The Bad: Seventeen incompletions is not awful considering there were 33 completions to match, but that is a considerable amount.

Brett Favre did a great job of running the offense until the Vikings got into the red zone. As I mentioned above, Favre's offense only scored once on five red zone trips. And allowed two defensive touchdowns in those trips.

Really a complete meltdown in crunch time. Which is an odd thing to say considering Favre has been at his best in crunch time this season.

Green Bay Packers 31
Cleveland Browns 3

Aaron Rodgers: 15-20, 246 yards, 3 TDs

The Good: Another week, another big day for Aaron Rodgers against one of the worst teams in the NFL. What he did in 20 attempts is outstanding. Rodgers had open targers all game and did not miss often.

Rodgers had two huge touchdown passes early in the game, granted he got help from his receivers earning YAC to score the touchdowns.

Unlike the previous week, Rodgers did not sputter in the second half and kept his offense moving with first downs.

The Bad: Not much I can say here. Rodgers had time to throw, and did he ever throw. He didn't hold onto the ball for too long and was in complete control of this game.

Did I mention Rodgers played really well?

The Pick

Brett Favre led the weekend in passing yards, and could have earned a win this week had Chester Taylor not blown the easiest catch of his career.

But Aaron Rodgers' big day earns him the pick this week. His flawless performance gives him the second best passer rating in the league. Rodgers begins his comeback by cutting Favre's lead to 5-2.

Final Thoughts...

The game vs. the Steelers was a tough loss for Brett and the Vikings, but should not dictate the rest of the season. Favre had some tough breaks, but I think he is still going to play at a high enough level to win games.

Aaron Rodgers is reaching the form he was expected to reach when this season began. However, his competition has been cream puffs and cannot be taken seriously as a way to measure how good Rodgers really is.

Next week...

The hour is at hand. Brett Favre returns to Lambeau Field. Need I say more? No, I don't.

Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II, Week Six

Welcome back, my friends, to Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers. I must apologize for the delay of this article's publishing. A mix of school work and personal problems forced the late publishing. Anyway, I'm here now.

Last week, Brett Favre earned an automatic victory due to Aaron Rodgers being on a bye week. With that, Favre claims an impressive 4-1 lead on the Packers' quarterback. However, if you read my articles last season, you know Rodgers has come back before.

Now that we've disposed of the formalities, let's get on to business.

Minnesota Vikings 33, Baltimore Ravens 31

Brett Favre: 21-29, 278 yards, 3 TDs

The Good

Favre was somewhat expected to have a big week, seeing as how he was facing the 26th-ranked pass defense in the NFL. Favre's opening drive was beautiful—perfectly capped off with a 19-yard touchdown to Visante Shiancoe.

Favre continued to dominate the Ravens' defense in the first half as he seemed to be throwing all over the field. Every one of his passes were accurate and not a single one looked like it could have been picked off.

After the Vikings' defense had a colossal meltdown, Favre was forced into another game-winning drive situation...where he shined beautifully yet again with a 58-yard bomb to Sidney Rice.

This was Favre's 42 game-winning drive and—if I am not mistaken—40th fourth-quarter comeback.

The Bad

The past few weeks have been hard for me to criticize Favre. He is making all the right decisions and is throwing like he was back in 2007.

Best of all, his receivers are making plays for him. They aren't dropping a lot of passes and are not quitting on plays.

I know this is the bad section of Favre's review, but there was really nothing unsatisfactory about Favre's week six performance.

The offense scored lots of points, and the only reason they didn't score more was because of terrible play calling late in the game.

Green Bay Packers 26, Detroit Lions 0

Aaron Rodgers: 27-38, 358 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT

The Good

Rodgers has played the Lions three times in his career, and all three times he has absolutely torched them. From the first snap to the last, Rodgers was absolutely on.

He found James Jones early for a huge touchdown pass that really set the tone for the rest of the game.

His first quarter looked as though he was going to throw for 400 yards and four TDs.

He was sacked a lot, but this time the sacks were completely on the offensive line, not just Rodgers holding on to the ball too long.

The Bad

Despite Rodgers' amazing stats, his offense stalled late in the game. The Packers only scored three points in the second half. Against the Lions, this is not a big deal, but against a team whose offense is capable of scoring points fast...this is a real concern.

Rodgers turned the ball over twice in this game, both in the fourth quarter. These are mistakes that can't happen if your team is to be a contender.

The Pick: Brett Favre

This week Aaron Rodgers put up more sensational stats for us to admire. But, it was Favre's flawless performance that earns him the win for this week.

The reasoning is simple. Rodgers had two turnovers; Favre had zero. Favre had three touchdowns; Rodgers had two. Favre had a game-winning drive; Rodgers did not.

With this win, Brett Favre extends his already massive lead to 5-1. This could get ugly fast.

A Look Ahead

Next week, the Vikings and their 6-0 record get a real test when they roll into Pittsburgh to face one of the best teams in the NFL...while the Packers get another easy matchup against the lowly Browns.

Final Thoughts...

Now that we are six weeks into the season, I can start to make intelligent assessments of both quarterbacks. In my honest opinion, only Peyton Manning is playing better football than Brett Favre. Brees and Brady both had one huge game to boost their stats, but Favre and Manning have consistently pummeled defenses.

Aaron Rodgers is showing more and more signs of becoming just like his former tutor every week. He keeps plays alive as long as he can and is showing some impressive play making skills. His receivers are great and he seems to have great chemistry with all of them.

I should also mention that week eight is the Big Game. Favre Bowl II: The Return to Lambeau Field.

Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II, Week Five

Welcome friends to the fifth edition of Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II. Last week, the Packers and Vikings Monday Night Football game set cable-viewing records.

The hype was unreal, and when game time finally came, it was still unreal. Half a dozen camera crews were at the coin toss as Favre shook hands with the Packers' captains, all former teammates.

During his post-game interview, it seemed like the entire world was watching Favre as he delivered his comments about his performance.

Despite Rodgers' career day, Favre's play was simply outstanding and merited a third consecutive victory for Favre in this competition.

The Packers have a bye this week, so obviously that poses a bit of an issue. Fortunately, this isn't my first time dealing with this problem so I will handle it the same way I did last season.

Award each quarterback with a free win for the weeks in which their opponent did not play. Having said that, I will analyze the performance of the quarterback who did play.

Let's move on shall we?

Minnesota Vikings vs. St. Louis Rams, 38-10

Brett Favre: 18-24, 232 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

The Good: Another week, another efficient passing day for Brett Favre. Granted this week he faced a much weaker defense. Brett Favre sort of has a tendency to have "let down" games after big wins. This time, Favre didn't miss a beat.

His best pass of the day came on a 2nd-and-9 play on the Vikings' first drive. A beautiful play action was finished with a gorgeous throw to Percy Harvin toward the sideline for over 20 yards.

His touchdown pass was just as great, as Favre made a difficult throw look effortless. When Favre noticed Visanthe Shiancoe running for an opening in the back of the endzone, Favre took a casual step back, did a half throwing motion, seeming to only flick his wrist. The ball that came out was a rocket at first over the middle linebackers' heads, then it gently dropped into the hole where Shiancoe caught the ball.

Favre should have had two touchdown passes, however poor footwork from Bernard Berrian denied him.

The Bad: Something I have noticed about Favre ever since the 49ers game is that he has his swagger back. Favre is slinging the ball around every which way, attacking single coverage, and seriously testing zone coverages.

If he keeps throwing the way he is, this is not a problem. However, if the quality of his throws drop, this is a serious problem. It is this Brett Favre that lost four of five games to end last season.

His interception is proof of this theory. Favre was rolling to the right and fired across his body trying to find a receiver. James Laurinaitis was waiting for that throw and Favre handed it to him.

Against the Rams, this mistake is not very costly. Against the Ravens? It may cost you the game.

Aaron Rodgers: Bye week.

The Pick

As I stated in the introduction, Brett Favre wins this week by default. However, his performance was very impressive and it would have taken something special from Rodgers to win this one.

Brett Favre increases his lead to 4-1 after five weeks. Raise your hand if you would have predicted that score before the season.

Put your hand down, liar.

Next week

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers return to action next week as they face the new Lions. I say new because this Lions team actually competes.

Brett Favre's Vikings will see the first real test of the season when they travel to Baltimore to take on the stout Ravens defense.

Brett Favre Vs. Aaron Rodgers II, Week Four

Welcome friends to the fourth edition of Brett Favre Vs. Aaron Rodgers II.

Last week we saw the old gunslinger earn a 2-1 advantage on his replacement. Shockingly, the polls seemed to favor Rodgers, while the comments seemed to favor Brett. I would have loved to see some of the arguments for Rodgers last week.

Anyway, this week we have quite the special article. As you all know this week the Packers went to the Metrodome to take on Favre's Vikings. Hold onto your hats.

Minnesota Vikings 30
Green Bay Packers 27

Brett Favre: 24-31, 271 yards, 3 TD's

The Good: Where do I start? From his first drive to the final pass of the night, Brett Favre was on his game. The play calling was not as conservative as many had thought. Adrian Peterson was surprisingly being kept under control. Favre was given the responsibility of winning the game, a responsibility I'm sure he took gladly.

Let's not overlook the offensive line here, Favre had all day in the pocket. Favre took advantage of Green Bay's aggressive secondary by looking off the coverage and helping his receivers to get open.

Favre was hitting receivers in stride all game, and once the game seemed in hand, he started to mock the Packers secondary by throwing deep bombs whenever he saw single coverage.

Lastly, Brett Favre set yet another NFL record by becoming the first player in NFL history to defeat all 32 teams.

The Bad: Favre played just about a flawless game, the only thing that he could have done better was perhaps not try so many deep balls. Late in the game on third and 11 with a chance to clinch the game, Favre went for it all instead of getting a shorter completion and finishing off the Packers.

Aaron Rodgers: 26-37, 384 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT

The Good: Aaron Rodgers had a career day throwing the ball, but it couldn't translate to a win. Early in the game it looked like Rodgers was ready to match Favre step for step, until he threw a bad pick to Antoine Winfield.

Rodgers was accurate for the most part, he favored his athletic tight end Jermichael Finley. Rodgers did a great job with the terrible protection he was given. As a matter of fact, terrible may be a considerable understatement. Rodgers was sacked eight times, and pressured almost double that.

So hats off to Rodgers on being able to have a great game despite lack of protection.

The Bad: Aaron Rodgers needs to get rid of the ball. While he isn't getting proper protection, he needs to know this and look to get rid of the ball sooner. Instead of throwing quick slants, he is scrambling around and putting himself in danger.

In this particular game, Rodgers did not look off the coverage very well. He was very good at finding the open receiver, but often did not help his receivers get open. I suppose this again can be blamed on the offensive line.

The Pick

How can I not give this week to Aaron Rodgers? Well, his career high 384 passing yards were pretty much handed to him at the end of the game by the Vikings defense. Brett Favre's performance was one of the best in recent memory. He shredded the Packers defense and completely dictated the outcome of this game.

Rodgers was the preseason favorite to not only beat Brett Favre, but to demolish him. Here we are with a quarter of the season gone by and Brett has a 3-1 lead on Rodgers.

A look ahead to next week....

Next week the 4-0 Minnesota Vikings travel to St. Louis to face a struggling Rams team. While Aaron Rodgers and the 2-2 Packers have a bye week to figure out what's wrong with the offensive line.

No Cristiano? No Problem: Manchester United Fills The Void

During Cristiano Ronaldo's six year stay at Old Trafford, he accounted for 118 goals and assisted in countless other goals. After being sold to Real Madrid for $131 Million, the three time English champions were forced with the daunting task of replacing the Portuguese winger.

Transfer rumors swirled for weeks as names like Franck Ribery, Karim Benzema, Sergio Aguero, and David Villa were mentioned amongst the media and fans alike. None of those names were signed by Manchester United last summer.

Instead, Sir Alex Ferguson signed smaller names, but not necessarily lesser talents. Names like Luis Antonio Valencia, Gabriel Obertan, and Michael Owen. While these players were welcome additions to Manchester United, none of them could seriously be expected to replace the void that Ronaldo left.

Sir Alex Ferguson came under much criticism for his lack of aggression in the transfer market, some even claiming that the legendary manager was "losing his touch."

Well, we are now a few months into the season, and once again Sir Alex Ferguson shows why he is the great manager he is. The void left by Cristiano Ronaldo seems to have been filled, but not with new expensive talent, but rather, players that were already at Old Trafford.

Starting with Wayne Rooney up front. The England international has scored in five of United's seven premier league matches, and is currently tied for the second most goals in England. Rooney's goal scoring has settled the main concern of goal production that Ronaldo handled so very well.

Dimitar Berbatov has gotten off to a great start to the season. He took much criticism after a disappointing 08/09 campaign. However, the expensive Bulgarian has proven his worth by not only scoring and creating chances, but by dropping back to help with defense. Something United fans criticized him heavily for.

Let's not forget the revival of Darren Fletcher. Every match that he has played in so far, he has made a significant impact. His most impressive performance to date, was his two goal performance at Manchester City, where he was only outshone by our next Ronaldo "replacement."

Ryan Gigg's form this season has been nothing short of phenomenal. The reigning PFA Player of the Year has continued his play making ways. With no Ronaldo to steal the light, Ryan Giggs has re-taken his place as Manchester United's most effective player. Giggs makes intelligent runs behind the defense and is always looking to pass before scoring.

In many ways, Giggs is a superior player than Ronaldo. Take Michael Carrick's game winning goal against Wolfsburg on Wednesday for example. Berbatov fed Giggs the ball inside the box, Giggs had a clear chance at goal, but instead dropped it off to Carrick who had a perfect shot at goal.

If that had been Ronaldo, odds are he would have taken the shot. Of course, because he is Cristiano Ronaldo, odds are also that he would have at least worked the keeper, but the odds of scoring are significantly lower on an off balance shot, rather than a perfect set up. Giggs, rather than take a shot himself, recognized an even better opportunity to score and gave the ball to his teammate.

In his last three appearences, Ryan Giggs has six assists and one goal. Those are numbers I doubt anyone in football can match.

As a matter of fact, Manchester United have gotten off to a better start this year, than in their past three championship winning seasons with Cristiano Ronaldo.

The team as a whole has not lost a step after a successful 2008/2009 season. The defense has played relavitely well, despite the absence of one of the top European goalkeepers from last season, Edwin Van Der Sar.

As for Ferguson's signings, they have had mixed results. Michael Owen was off to a great start. His late game winning goal against Manchester City earned him respect at the Stretford End. However like much of his career, it has been marred by injury. The reception of Luis Antonio Valencia has been mixed. He was unfairly given the role of replacing Ronaldo by some fans. That is clearly asking too much of the ex-Wigan winger. In that respect, he has not done what he was signed for. To the more reasonable fan, Valencia is slowly easing his way into one of the best starting XI's in the world.

While Manchester United has gotten off to a fantastic start, it is unclear whether this "Ronaldo-less" team will be able to win trophies. However, one thing is clear, this team has proven they can play top football without the top player in the world.

Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II, Week Three

Welcome friends to Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers, the series that never fails to spark friendly debate.

Last week Brett Favre got even with Rodgers after a career day in terms of passing percentage. For the most part you guys seemed to agree with me, but, like always, both quarterbacks were pretty even.

Well, let's recap this wild week three.

Minnesota Vikings 27
San Francisco 49ers 24

Brett Favre: 24-for-46, 301 yards, 2 TDs 1 INT

The Good: Talk about a home debut for Brett Favre. From the first snap he was dissecting the 49ers blitz and made them pay on an early 30-yard touchdown pass. Once the 49ers realized that Favre would not be fazed by their blitz, things got tough for the gunslinger.

Favre was pretty accurate most of the game, there were a few overthrown passes that would have made winning this game a lot easier.

If you were awake on Sunday, you know what Favre did at the end of this game. Dodging a sack and firing a bomb 32 yards into the back of the endzone for the game-winning touchdown.

Brett Favre is one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the entire NFL. He has an almost unprecedented combination of pocket mobility, arm strength and a long history of NFL experience.

The Bad: As I stated above, Favre was a little inaccurate today. His completion percentage took a huge drop off from 85 percent to 52 percent. The Vikings coaches let him loose once they realized the 49ers had Adrian Peterson in check.

Favre's interception was yet another tipped ball by his wide receiver. However, Favre should have been picked off twice earlier in the game. He was lucky that the 49ers secondary dropped sure picks.

Green Bay Packers 36
St. Louis Rams 17

Aaron Rodgers: 13-for-23, 269 yards, 2 TDs, 1 rushing TD

The Good: Rodgers did more with 13 completions than most quarterbacks can do with twenty. He was very accurate with his deep ball today. Torching the Rams secondary on a number of occasions.

As he has been doing all season, Rodgers was running for dear life, but this time he made plays outside of the pocket. He was a very effective runner today, something that he has yet to do in the previous two games.

Rodgers' touchdown pass to Donald Driver was an impressive scramble to his left side, then a laser 21 yards downfield.

The Bad: There are no more questions surrounding Aaron Rodgers' arm anymore. Not that there ever should have been. The only thing Rodgers must now do is learn to make better decisions. While he had a great day on the stat line, if not for a few blown coverages, his stats would look much more mediocre.

Rodgers has yet to throw an interception all season, he is one of three starting quarterbacks who can boast such a stat. The others being Kyle Orton and Marc Bulger.

The Pick

This week I faced a very tough choice. Both quarterbacks were extremely accurate and pulled their team to victory. So what separates them this week?

Look no further than Brett Favre's game-winning drive. In the history of the NFL, has a 39 year old quarterback ever gone 80 yards downfield in 90 seconds with zero timeouts to win the football game? Not to mention make one of the most spectacular plays in recent memory.

Brett Favre continues to silence his critics as he takes a surprising 2-1 lead on Aaron Rodgers.

Next week...

Next Monday, we will be treated to one of the most anticipated regular season games in NFL history. Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers will travel to Minnesota to take on Favre's Vikings. For the first time in Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers history, the two quarterbacks will face off head to head. The outcome will almost certainly determine the winner of week four.

Brett Favre Vs. Aaron Rodgers II; Week Two

Welcome friends to Week Two of Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers. Last week we saw the reigning champion get an early start on his repeat. You guys seemed to largely support my pick of Rodgers, despite his lower passer rating.

This week Favre will be looking to even the score. Enough formalities, let's do this shall we?

Minnesota Vikings 27
Detroit Lions 13

Brett Favre: 23-27, 155 yards, 2 TD's

The Good: This week's performance was a huge improvement from his week one performance. Once again, Favre was extremely accurate with the ball and made excellent decisions with the football. The Lions defense gave his receivers lots of space at the line, which Favre capitalized on with short seven yard throws.

Unlike last week, Adrian Peterson was not running the show. In fact, early in the game the Vikings were losing 10-0. Favre led a long drive that he finished off with his first touchdown pass.

Once the Lions defense took notice to Favre, the Vikings were able to get their running game going.

Brett Favre also set another NFL record for most consecutive starts. I think of all his records, this one is the most precious to him.

The Bad: Once again, no downfield passing for Brett. I'm not sure whether it is the Vikings playcalling that is limiting Favre's options, or if Favre is just taking things slow, but it needs to change fast.

When the Vikings play a good pass defense, they will need to have a more versatile passing game.

Right now they are extremely limited in what they can do, but they certainly have the weapons to expand their play calling

Green Bay Packers 24
Cincinnati Bengals 31

Aaron Rodgers: 21-39, 261 yards, 1 TD

The Good: Rodgers' stats were pretty solid this week. He did a great job of moving around in the pocket and letting his receivers get open. With the running game virtually ineffective, Rodgers got the chance to sling the ball around.

Yet again, the offensive line for the Packers crumbled and allowed Rodgers to be sacked more than a quarterback should. This effected Rodgers' overall game. However, he did a great job of not getting rattled and did not make a costly mistake.

The Bad: Early in the game Rodgers was shockingly inaccurate. He missed a few open receivers by a good two yards. Also, Rodgers seemed to get to antsy in the pocket whenever the rush was coming. He seemed to do a lot of scrambling east and west and never had the ball in throwing position, meaning he was literally running for dear life.

I'm not sure if the Bengals just had great coverage all day, or if the Packer receivers simply weren't getting open, but Rodgers held onto the ball too long at times in the game.

Unfortunately for Rodgers, he found his rythm too late in the game to complete the comeback.

The Pick

Both quarterbacks faced some intense pressure today, but only one quarterback managed to complete 85% of his passes. Brett Favre is our winner for week two.

When Adrian Peterson was ineffective (what??), Favre took control of the offense and brought the Vikings back. A flawless game from Favre as he ties the series at 1-1.

A look ahead....

Next week Aaron Rodgers and the Packers travel to St. Louis where they will take on another weaker team. I'm sure they will be looking to bounce back from a very disappointing loss.

Brett Favre makes his home debut next week as the 49ers come into Minnesota. This is a battle of 2-0 teams and should be interesting.

My 100th Article, Bow to My Superiority

It's been creeping up on me for the past month or so. The 100th article. It's been a year since I joined B/R, and I always assumed I would reach 100 articles. Now that it has finally arrived, I must take a moment to acknowledge the magnitude of this achievement.

The 100th article is the biggest article. Because it's the last time you'll change digits. I mean, unless you reach 1,000, in which case you just need to get a job.

For awhile I have been pondering...what should my 100th article should be about?

Should I go the way of my ego and write an article on how glorious the last 99 have been? Nah. (But they were.)

Should I get all sentimental and write an article on how the last 99 have changed my life? Nah, I'm not a liar.

Perhaps I should start giving credit to all those who have helped me get where I am? Nah, but I do have to give a shoutout to our friend T.W. Krems.

Aha! I know, I will write an article with no real plot, focus, or cohesion. Perfect.

Prepare for a whiplash around the world of sports, B/R, celebrity, and life in general.

First off, I have the deepest respect for all the writers in the Wrestling Community; they actually write really good articles about a "sport" as real as MTV reality shows.

Did anyone else notice how we all kind of forgot about Spygate? Or how Roger Goodell never discussed the tapes after watching them once. Makes you really wonder what he found inside the Patriots organization....

Why is everyone in love with Notre Dame? They haven't been good my entire life, so why is it that every year people are predicting 10 or more wins? They suck. Accept it.

After watching the VMA awards, I have come to the conclusion that mainstream music today is no longer about music, it is about shows and lights. Lady GaGa actually is the worst artist I have ever heard. In fact, I refuse to call her an "artist" anymore, she is nothing more than an untalented, horribly dressed, plastic bimbo.

Now for my beef with golf....

I realize golf is probably the most widely played sport by middle aged men with careers. The same middle aged men who run shows like SportsCenter. Therefore, they actually give a rats ass about a sport that involves zero athletic maneuvers.

Personally, I hope I get into golf when I'm older, maybe then I'll understand how people find it exciting.

Baseball, you aren't getting off that easy....

My friend Ricardo put it best, some people have to be born to watch baseball. It is a gentlemen's game.

Yes, it certainly is a "gentle" man's game.

I'm not saying baseball doesn't take skill; hell I think hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do in all of sports. I am just saying...baseball games take around three hours to finish. Of those three hour broadcasts, MAYBE 45 minutes is the actual game. And of those 45 minutes, MAYBE 10 of them are exciting.

Throw it in, along with golf, in the bin that reads: "Sports that are only fun if you play them."

Why do people get pissed off when they get cut-off in traffic? I know that when I cut people off I tell them to get over it. It's just how the road works....

Why do people actually hate Brett Favre? All this crap about him flip-flopping is just people watching too much ESPN. If you actually watch enough ESPN all day to say "Damn, I'm tired of hearing about Brett Favre." You need to find something else on TV.

Nmandi Asomouga is awesome. He's the only player on the Raiders I wish wasn't on the Raiders.

Why doesn't the BCS make sense? Seriously. I can't think of one reason to argue why the BCS makes any sense at all.

Adrian Peterson should write an apology to the Browns defense for doing what he did to them on Sunday. I mean, did you see that run? Complete disrespect for human life.

Then there's this whole deal with Michael Jackson. I respect his legacy and what he did for music, but people are going overboard. An hour before he died, most people didn't give two shits about him and probably couldn't name more than five songs of his. Now that he is dead he is the King of Pop again, not a child molester?

Jennifer's Body has the chance to be the worst movie of the summer. Let's hope Megan Fox is hot enough to make up for the lack of sensible/entertaining plot.

Articles of the day (formerly known as Pick of the day) have lost their prestige. I can't remember the last time an AOTD actually had to do with sports. Nowadays the contest for AOTD is just who can write the saddest, most touching story that will earn pity votes from people.

The Beatles are the greatest band/musicians in the history of modern music. Thirteen albums in seven years, all 13 of them world famous classics. More chart topping singles than I can even name, and music that will ring through the ears of many generations to come.

Twitter is the first horseman of the apocalypse. As of right now we are only at one, of course if Lady GaGa continues to sing...that may change....

I close my epic 100th article with this awesome quote from The Last Samurai.

"You want me to kill japos? I'll kill japos. You want me to kill the enemies of japos? I'll kill the enemies of japos. Sioux, Cheyenne, Cherokee, for 500 dollars a month I'll kill whoever you tell me to. But, keep one thing in mind. I'd happily kill you for free."

Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers II; Week One

Welcome friends to the return of the Brett Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers series. Last season this series proved to be one of the more...interesting...on Bleacher Report. With Favre's recent unretirement, the series is prime for its own comeback.

Last season, I predicted that Brett Favre would be playing football in 2009. Well, I was right, granted I did not predict the events that lead to the gunslinger moving to Minnesota.

Let's not forget the other participant in this thrilling contest. Last season, Aaron Rodgers burst onto the scene as one of the top quarterbacks in the league. His individual statistics are often overshadowed by his team's 6-10 record.

Last season, Rodgers won the individual competition over Favre 9-8 and was awarded the season ending victory as well. With expectations high for both quarterbacks, the pressure will be on them to win. Which big-arm quarterback will take the Master vs. Student Trophy this year?

Enough with the introduction, you know how I like to do things.

Minnesota Vikings 34
Cleveland Browns 20

Favre: 14-of-21, 110 yards, 1 TD

The Good: Favre played the position of game manager today, and he played it very well. Favre completed 66% of his passes and didn't try to force anything. His touchdown pass to Percy Harvin was a classic bullet by Favre.

The Bad: Well, the stat line was rather unimpressive. 110 yards? That's pathetic. Then again, you don't need to do much more than that when Adrian Peterson is rushing for 180 yards and 3 TDs. Favre didn't throw anything deeper than 10 yards downfield. It was a flurry of quick slants, screens, and check downs.

The Vikings coaching staff did a great job of not unleashing Favre too soon. However, if they want to go anywhere after December...they will need to start throwing downfield.

Green Bay Packers 21
Chicago Bears 15

Rodgers: 17-28, 184 yards, 1 TD

The Good: Aaron Rodgers spent most of the first half on his backside, yet managed to avoid crippling interceptions. He didn't try and force anything, and ate the ball rather than throw it up.

For the most part, Rodgers was accurate and made great decisions. Rodgers also earned his first game-winning drive of his career (don't listen to NBC...those two against the Lions are not classified as game winning drives...christ...they'll do anything to glorify quarterbacks nowadays, won't they?).

The Bad: The only thing Rodgers did poorly in this week, was he struggled a little bit with his deep accuracy. Sure his 50-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings was on the money, but he missed Donald Driver a few times early in the game.

All in all, a solid game from Rodgers. Perhaps 17-28 is not what McCarthy is looking for from Rodgers, but he'll take zero interceptions for eleven incompletions.

The Pick

Aaron Rodgers had roughly the same stats as Favre, but he had that precious game-winning drive. It's not what Favre didn't do, it's what Aaron Rodgers did do.

So with the first week coming to a close, Rodgers gets off to a 1-0 lead.

A Look Ahead....

Brett Favre and the Vikings get the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. In week one, the Lions allowed Drew Brees to throw for SIX TOUCHDOWNS and over 350 yards. If there was ever a week to take off Favre's training wheels, it's next week.

Aaron Rodgers' Packers get a cupcake match up as well. The Bengals come into Lambeau after their heart-breaking loss in week one.

Thanks for reading!

Cheeseheads Vs. Cheeseheads: the Great Favre Civil War

Two years ago Brett Favre was the most beloved football player in the nation. He had just wrapped up a 13-3 season in which he put up pro bowl stats. Packer fans across the nation were expecting Favre to come back for 2008 and have one more whirl at a championship.

Oh, how times have changed.

You all know the story, Favre retires and gets a metaphoric standing ovation from the whole NFL community. Then, Favre decides he wants to come back, but the Packers say "the train has left the station." Favre gets traded to the Jets where he finds little success. Favre retires after one mediocre season in New York, and says "there is no chance" that he comes back.

Favre changes his mind, twice, and right before the preseason starts, Brett Favre is holding a purple jersey.

Which brings us to today.

Favre's actions has split Packer fans down the middle. The Favre lovers, and the Favre haters. These two groups of Packer fans have been bickering since Favre's signing, neither side winning and no end in sight. Let's take a look at the new breed of Packer fans.

The Favre Lovers

There are still many Packer fans out there (me included) who hold very little resentment against Favre. The Favre lovers are usually the younger fans, the ones who haven't really known the Packers without Brett Favre. They recognize and understand all that Favre has done for the Packers franchise, and therefore give him a "free pass" on this betrayal.

They claim they are true Packer fans because they are not condemning the greatest Packer of all-time.

The Favre Haters

Of course there are a vast number of Packer fans who have completely disowned Favre for going to the Vikings. In fact, you can find dozens of "Favre jersey burning" videos on Youtube. These are the lifelong Packer fans, who know football before Favre and who's love for the Packers was not because of the gunslinger. They recognize and understand all that Favre has done for the Packers franchise, but because of his betrayal he is just another Viking to hate.

They claim they are true Packer fans because they are staying true to the Green and Gold and will never cheer for a Viking.

What now?

For now, all we can do is watch the Packer nation tear itself apart. As I stated earlier in the article, there is no end in sight. With Favre coming to Lambeau, I wouldn't be surprised if there is an actual fight between the lovers and the haters.

What a tragedy this all is, and to think...this would all have been avoided had the 49ers just picked Aaron Rodgers back in 2005. Just kidding of course.

The hard truth of the matter is, Brett Favre is a Viking and he plays the game for himself. This is neither good nor bad. Favre is the same person he was two years ago, he is just wearing a purple jersey.

I humbly request a peace when the Vikings come to Lambeau. I think it would be absolutely stunning if there were neither cheers nor boos when Favre steps onto the field as a Vikings. That's right, complete silence. So that we are neither cheering for a Viking, nor booing a Packer legend.

Of course, will both sides be able to come to such an agreement during the Great Favre Civil War?

Which side are you on?

Manchester United or Barcelona? Who's Treble Was Greater?

This past season Barcelona's Champions League conquest over Manchester United completed the fifth-ever European Treble, and first since 1999. Ironically, Manchester United was the winner of that particular Treble.

For those of you who are new to football, or perhaps you've just been born, the term Treble refers to a team winning three trophies in one season. There are many variaties of Trebles in football, varying on the country and association. However, the most prestigous is known as the Continental Treble. This Treble includes trophies from a top tier league, top tier domestic cup, and continental trophy.

The European Treble is the highest honor attainable by all nations. It should be noted that such thing as a Quadruple and Quintuple exist, however they are impossible in most football associations around the world.

Anyway, enough with the education. Let's get to football.

With Barcelona's recent Treble, I have asked the question: whose Treble was greater, Manchester United in 1999 or Barcelona in 2009?

Talent

Both clubs were loaded with individual talent. For Manchester United, names like Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Roy Keane, Teddy Sheringham, and Andy Cole come to mind. For Barcelona you list the names of Lionel Messi, Sameul Eto'o, Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, and Xavi.

Both teams played beautiful football and if they were not dominating opponents, they were getting ready to crawl back from a deficit.

For this particular section, I do not give the edge to either Manchester United nor Barcelona. They are completely even in terms of individual talent.

Edge: Even

Domestic Cup

Manchester United won the F.A. Cup in 1999. The road was a very difficult one. United were matched up against five Premier League opponents in each of the first rounds of the competition.

United were drawn with their bitter rival Liverpool in the fourth round. Michael Owen scored in the third minute and Liverpool did not trail for 89 minutes. Dwight Yorke equalized from a David Beckham free kick in the 86th minute, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won the match for Manchester United in the 92nd minute. Manchester United snatched victory from the very hands of their opponents, as you will read this became a trend for the 1999 Treble winners.

United played Arsenal in a semi-finals, but the match finished scoreless after 120 minutes and was scheduled for a replay three days later.

With the replay match tied 1-1, Arsenal nearly stole the Treble dream from Manchester United. Arsenal were awarded a penalty in injury time. Dennis Bergkamp's penalty kick was saved by Peter Schmeichel and the match went into extra time.

Midway through the second half of extra time, Ryan Giggs scored one of the most astonishing and breath taking goals of all-time. Giggs started his run at the half-way line and beat the entire Arsenal back line and scored a left-footed shot that blasted into the roof of the net. United had taken one step closer to the Treble.

In the F.A. Cup Final, Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in a rather dominating performance.

Barcelona won the Copa Del Rey in 2009. They faced an early test against Benidorm, a team from the second tier of Spanish football. Barcelona won both legs 1-0 behind goals from Bojan Kircic and Lionel Messi.

In the round of sixteen, Barcelona demolished their La Liga counterparts Athletico Madrid 5-2 in the aggregate. Barcelona faced a serious test from Espanyol in the quarter finals. The first leg finished in a 0-0 draw, however Barca defeated their Catalonian rivals 3-2 at the Nou Camp behind a stellar performance from Bojan Kircic.

In the semifinal, Barcelona defeated Mallorca 3-1 in the aggregate and advanced to the Copa Del Rey final where they would face Athletic Bilbao. The final was nothing short of a fiasco for Bilbao. Barcelona scored four unanswered goals after trailing Bilbao 1-0 following an 8th minute goal from Toquero.

Barcelona had won the Copa Del Rey for the first time since 1998.

Edge: Manchester United were able to steal victories from some of the best teams in England. Barcelona dominated their opponents, but faced weaker teams.

League Football

Barcelona won the Spanish Primera Division in 2009 with 87 points in the table. Barca was nine points clear of second place Real Madrid. Barcelona finished the La Liga season with a record of 26-6-5.

After a couple bad performances to start the season, Barcelona found themselves in 15th position. However, behind a sensational nine-game winning streak, they claimed the top spot on the table. Barcelona would remain unbeaten for 21 games in La Liga.

Barcelona dominated the entire league all season. They were in the top position for virtually the entire season. From when they first took over in round nine all the way until the very end.

The highlight of their season was the colossal 6-1 victory over rivals Real Madrid. This win solidified Barcelona's place as Spanish League champion.

Manchester United won the F.A. Premier League in 1999 with a then record number of goals scored. Manchester United won with 79 points in the table, only one point ahead over Arsenal. After the first five matches, United were in 10th place and struggling. However, Man Utd. managed to rip of a seven game unbeaten streak to earn second position on the table.

It was a dogfight all season long between Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea. Following a 3-2 loss to Middlesbrough in the 18th round, United were third on the table. They would not lose again the entire season.

United showed big margins of victory on their way to the Premier League title. One such result was an 8-1 victory at Nottingham Forest. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scored four goals in the final ten minutes of the game.

Edge: Barcelona won more games and never really struggled during the season. Despite United's impressive 20 game unbeaten streak to end the season, Barcelona were always in first position on the table.

Champions League

Barcelona won their Champions League group with thirteen points and a record of 4-1-1. They were drawn with French club Lyon in the round of sixteen. The first leg in Lyon finished 1-1 with Barcelona having the away goal advantage. However, they would not need it. Barcelona destroyed Lyon 5-2 in the second leg.

The quarterfinals saw a dream matchup between Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Both clubs were heavy favorites to win the Champions League in 2009. Barcelona ended any hopes Bayern had of a European title when they defeated them 4-0 in the first leg at the Nou Camp. Barcelona advanced 5-1 on aggregate.

In the semifinals, Barcelona would meet with English club Chelsea to determine who would go to Rome for the final. After a 0-0 draw at the Nou Camp, the second leg at Stamford Bridge was the center of controversy during the second leg. Chelsea's Michael Essien scored a stunning goal early in the game to give Chelsea the advantage. During the course of the game there were many obvious, and not so obvious, penalty situations that were not awarded by the referee.

The missed penalties proved fatal for Chelsea as Andres Iniesta fired in a beautiful goal from about 21 yards out, in injury time. Barcelona had stolen the match on the away goals rule, denying Chelsea a return to the Champions League Final.

In the final, Barcelona started off badly the first ten minutes against Manchester United, but took over the match for the final 80 minutes. A goal from Samuel Eto'o in the 15th minute changed the match. Barcelona controlled possesion in midfield and made Manchester United look like fools, rather than the defending European Champions.

Lionel Messi's jaw dropping header in the 77th minute was the final nail in the coffin for Manchester United as Barcelona had all but won the title.

After the referees whistle, Barcelona had won their Treble.

Manchester United finished second in their group with ten points with a record of 2-4-0. The older format of the Champions League was much different from the current one we have today. Back in 1999, only the two best runner ups in the group stage would advance to the knockout stage.

In the quarterfinals, Manchester United defeated the heavily favored Internazionale Milan with a convincing 3-1 aggregate. In the semifinals against Juventus, Manchester United relied on late goals to advance to the final. The first was a 90th minute equalizer from Ryan Giggs in the first leg at Old Trafford, which finished 1-1. The return leg in Italy finished 3-2 in United's favor. Andy Cole's 84th minute goal sealed Juve's fate and put United in the final.

The 1999 Champions League Final needs no introduction. Manchester United and Bayern Munich had both won their league and major domestic cups. Meaning that no matter who won, we would have a Treble winner in 1999. The only question was, who would it be?

Mario Basler of Bayern Munich gave the German club the lead in the sixth minute on a low curling free kick. Bayern Munich would not be down for every minute of the game, except the one that matters. The match was dominated by the German club as they kept the pressure on United all match. It wasn't until Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came on as a substitute in the 80th minute that United made a run, and did they ever make a run.

With injury time looming, United were still trailing 1-0. A corner kick was awarded as injury time had just begun. The corner kick was poorly cleared by the Bayern Munich defense as Ryan Giggs was able to get a shot off. The shot was a bad one, but so bad, that it went right to Teddy Sheringham who calmly redirected it into the back of the net. Despite being behind and outplayed most of the match, United appeared to have forced extra time.

Less than 30 seconds after the restart, Manchester United had forced another corner kick. David Beckham's corner kick was headed by Teddy Sheringham towards the far post, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was waiting to poke it into the roof of the net in a reflex like movement. Bayern had led most of the match, but now found themselves trailing 2-1 in a matter of minutes.

Manchester United completed one of the most thrilling comebacks in recent memory. They had won their Treble in injury time of the Champions League Final.

Edge: Despite the heart-stopping finish to the season, Manchester United will not be receiving my vote here. Barcelona demolished some of the toughest clubs in Europe, including the defending European champion, Manchester United.

The Verdict

In my humble opinion, I think the 2009 Barcelona Treble team was better than the 1999 Treble team of Manchester United. Barcelona were never really challenged, except for the Chelsea matches, as they ran through all competitions.

However, I believe that Manchester United's Treble season was the stuff of legends. Late goals, dramatic comebacks, and that unbelievable night at the Nou Camp, all of these things means to me that their Treble was greater.

It is hard to differentiate between the two, as they are so very even.

Mike McCarthy's "No Tweet" Rule Is Great For Packers

I recently heard the news that Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy is placing a "ban" on Tweeting from the players.

For those of you who have not lost your mind and/or still have a sense of pride and honor, Twitter is the massive online "social networking system." The user can post a small text of 140 characters or less, and the whole world can see it.

That is the official definition of Twitter. My own definition is quite different: in my opinion, Twitter is the first horseman of the apocalypse. Alas, I digress...

Mike McCarthy has declared that any Packers player caught tweeting will receive the maximum fine allowed by the NFL from McCarthy. I am a huge fan of this new rule. My hate for Twitter aside, this is a move that will keep the locker room from turning into an internet chat room.

"Tweeting" has recently become very popular with professional athletes. Many of them leave "tweets" before and after games. While the practice itself is harmless, it has the potential to rip locker rooms apart. The Packers are one blow-out loss and one angry tweet from becoming a soap opera.

Now that there is a fine of $1,071 in place, that will not be happening.

Some of you may say, "Who is Mike McCarthy to tell them they cannot have fun and interact with their fans?" Truth is, nothing is wrong with that. However, it's only a matter of time until a player "tweets" something that ruffles some feathers in the Packers locker room. With this new fine in place, the whole problem is avoided, and the Packers will keep their integrity and not turn into the circus that is the Dallas Cowboys.

As far as players' rights go, if they really, REALLY, want to use Twitter, they can protest with the Players Association and probably get the rule lifted. Of course, I would immediately lose respect for that player, as it means they are more worried about 140 character texts, than football.

Props to you, Mike McCarthy. This is how you stop a virus from spreading!

You Might Be a Florida Gators Fan If....

I don't really need to give an introduction after that title, do I? Anyhow, this article is part of B/R's cooperative series of "You might be a (insert name here) fan if...." started by the lovely Cameon Shiflett. Click here for the original article.

This is a humorous article and is not made to offend anyone, of course if it does, you can always cry about it on the comment board. Again, this is a humorous article.

Let me start by saying I am a PROUD Gator fan. I bleed orange and blue, and I love nothing more than a game at The Swamp. That being said....

You might be a Gator fan if you are in love with Tim Tebow.

You might be a Gator fan if you look down on the bandwagon fans of FSU and Miami.

You might be a Gator fan if you consider "being wrong" a sin.

You might be a Gator fan if you own two of the same Gator shirts.

You might be a Gator fan if "the Seminole wave" actually makes you puke.

You might be a Gator fan if tailgating starts on Thursday.

You might be a Gator fan if you don't believe in moral victories, just the scoreboard.

You might be a Gator fan if you use your Facebook status to count down the days until September 5, 2009 (42 days, F.Y.I.).

You might be a Gator fan if your darts board has a picture of Lane Kiffin on it.

You might be a Gator fan if said darts board use to have a picture of Ron Zook.

You might be a Gator fan if you are completely oblivious to how obnoxious you sound when you talk about the Gators.

You might be a Gator fan if you just don't care.

You might be a Gator fan if you isolate yourself from the world following a loss.

You might be a Gator fan if you visit the Swamp just for the hell of it.

You might be a Gator fan if you think the Pride of the Sunshine could wipe the floor with any orchestra on the planet.

You might be a Gator fan if you have a custom Gator-themed table in your apartment.

You might be a Gator fan if you lit a couch on fire during the celebration of the 2009 National Championship.

You might be a Gator fan if you have a stockpile of orange and blue paint because of a a horrifying experience you had at the Home Depot.

You might be a Gator fan if you look forward to dancing with the Hare-Krishna's every Saturday.

You might be a Gator fan if you want Billy Donovan to raise your kids.

You might be a Gator fan if....

Let's see some good ones, yeah?

Brett, Brady, or Bradshaw: How To Best Tackle the NFL Quarterback Debate

The most entertaining and mind-tiring debates in sports are those over quarterbacks. Whether it is a good old fashion Top Ten Greatest list, or the ever-so-repeated Brady vs. Manning debate, many people have their two cents for quarterback debates.

I've seen just about every argument for every quarterback imaginable in my day. Rings over stats, stats over rings, blah, blah, blah. It's about time someone set the record straight and put out a list on what NFL quarterbacks should really be measured on. In order, mind you.

So here we go, this is my list, in order of importance, of what we should measure to determine a quarterback's greatness.

Intangibles....bleh...that word....

Before I start my official list, I feel like I should address the issue of intangibles. You know, leadership, durability, knowledge, all that good stuff. Well, I'm here to say that they are just icing on the cake of the argument. You can't honestly base a strong argument on intangibles.

If you are going to make an argument for a quarterback, make sure you have strong stats and facts before you whip out the can of intangibles.

It's like I say, the use of intangibles is similar to the use of glitter, it can make your argument look pretty, but if you use too much, it looks childish.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's move on to the official list of what really matters in determining a quarterback's greatness.

5. Individual Honors

Individual honors are pretty unimportant compared to some of the other things you could argue. MVP's and Pro Bowls are nice, but they don't mean much. I mean, Michael Vick went to four Pro Bowls...does anyone here think that is an accomplishment? No, because we all know the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest.

MVP's are a little more prestigious, but not too far from their Pro Bowl counterparts. Senior NFL writers across the nation vote for the league's MVP every year. They always vote for a quarterback, unless someone else had a monstrous season. Because there is a lot of...questions...surrounding the credibility of the MVP voters, the award itself is less prestigious.

Here are some of the names you may hear with strong individual honor arguments; Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, etc.

4. Regular Season success

This is one of the more "ridiculed" points of an argument by other arguers. You all know what I mean, someone says 16-0 for Brady, the another says 18-1.

Regular season success is important, because it's how players are judged by their own team. You have to have a great regular season to make the playoffs, therefore the regular season means a lot.

I can't stand it when someone tells me "who cares if he plays well in the regular season, he doesn't win in the postseason." Uh, I do, and so does every other respected writer in the nation. I digress...

Don't focus too much on the regular season success argument, it will only get you so far. If the quarterback you are arguing for is only known for regular season success and virtually no success in the postseason, you are probably better off not replying....

Some names you may hear with strong regular season success arguments...

Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Donovan McNabb, Jim Kelly, Steve Young, Brett Favre, etc.

3. Performance in the clutch

This is one of the grayest areas in quarterback arguments. What really defines "performance in the clutch." Is it simply winning big games? Or is it making that jaw dropping throw on fourth down with :02 seconds left on the clock? Or is it bringing your team back from a ten point deficit?

It's all of the above. Anytime the quarterback is handed the opportunity to do something great for his team, that is a clutch moment.

Now, in regards to making an argument, performance in the clutch is huge. A quarterback cannot be considered great if he cannot perform for his team when he is needed most. If the quarterback you are making the argument for has a great history of performing in the clutch, stick close to it, and make sure the person you are debating with understands who's got that game winning touchdown.

Alas, it cannot hold you up for too long. As it is a very vague argument, an intelligent person can easily refute and/or redirect the debate.

Some names with strong arguments for performance in the clutch...Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Tom Brady, John Elway, etc.

2. Postseason success

We are at number two on my list, and we are now entering the realm of "irrefutable arguments." That means that nobody can deny these successes. Doesn't matter how you weigh their importance, you must respect and recognize these victories.

Post-season success is the ultimate goal in the NFL. While it is a team goal and not just the quarterback's goal, the quarterback is in the driver's seat.

Super Bowl championships fall under this category. I don't really have to go into detail about this one, because it is pretty obvious.

However, I must say be careful of how close you stick to this argument. If you get into the mode of: "Super Bowls are all that count, everything else is just extra worthless crap." You are in danger of making the argument an unpleasant experience. Nobody likes the guy that won't listen to another person's argument on the grounds of "I am right, there is no way I am wrong."

some names with strong post-season success arguments...
Otto Graham, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Tom Brady, Troy Aikman, Bart Starr, etc.

1. Touchdowns

Everyone says: "the ultimate goal is winning Super Bowls."

My question to that is: "how do you go about doing that?"

The most important thing in football is the scoreboard. Therefore, the most important thing for a quarterback to do, is score points. Touchdown passes are the most important thing when measuring a quarterback's success. If you don't throw touchdowns, you aren't going to win games. Duh.

A quarterback is worthless if he isn't doing his part. The quarterback's job is to "efficiently run the offense." Nothing is more efficient than throwing touchdown passes.

I know I'm sounding like Captain Obvious here, but it's the truth. People make quarterback arguments too complicated with awards, wins, losses, turnovers, and worst of all other stats. The truth is, throwing touchdowns is most important for a quarterback. This is the FIRST thing a quarterback must do, then you can think about Super Bowls...

No reasonable person can sit back and say that the touchdown pass is not of the most severe importance.

Some names with strong touchdown arguments...Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton, John Elway, etc.

Questions? Comments or concerns? You know what to do....

Gold Cup Final Preview and Prediction

Did anybody really expect differently?

The United States and Mexico will meet in the 2009 Gold Cup final on Sunday, July 26th, 2009. This marks the third time these two rivals will have played each other for the CONCACAF crown.

How they got here...

Both teams took different routes to get here, surviving tests from the "bottom feeders" of CONCACAF.

The United States advanced as the winner of Group B with seven points. For the most part, they dominated their competition. A thrilling 2-2 draw with Haiti on match day three kept them from earning maximum points.

Mexico struggled early in Group C. Their performance in the first two matches against Nicaragua and Panama were horrible, to put it nicely. Mexico struggled to get in rhythm offensively, and were at sixes and sevens on defense.

It wasn't until their third match against Guadeloupe that Mexico began to show good ball movement and sturdy defending.

In the end, Mexico won Group C with seven points.

In the quarterfinals, the United States needed a penalty kick to get by the persistent Panama squad, who took the defending Gold Cup champions into extra time. Mexico, on the other hand, demolished Haiti 4-0.

In the semifinals, the United States comfortably beat Honduras 2-0. Mexico had a much tougher opponent in Costa Rica. The match was thrilling as the Mexican team finally began to show promise of cohesion and teamwork. While Costa Rica squandered chances given to them by the work-in-progress Mexican defense.

It seemed as though Mexico would win when Guillermo Franco capitalized on a loose ball inside a chaotic six-yard box. However, Froylan Ledezma of Costa Rica took advantage of Mexican defensive blunders and scored the equilizer in injury time.

The match went into penalty kicks. Behind a Memo Ochoa save, Mexico came out victorious, 5-3, in football's version of Russian roulette.

The Final

The two countries are bitter rivals. Every match between these two nations is bigger and more important than the one before it. It truly is the most intense international rivalry on this side of the Atlantic.

The United States have decided to field their "C" squad in this year's Gold Cup tournament. A rational move as many of their "A" team players needed rest after competing in the FIFA Confederations Cup. Despite their place on the U.S. todem pole, these youngsters have proven their worth on the pitch.

Mexico have fielded a much stronger team, talent wise. With all of their European talents on vacation, Javier Aguirre has turned to the best talent in Mexico along with some of the most promising young talents avaliable to him.

The Mexican team is faster, more experienced, and largely, under more scrutiny. For the United States, the Gold Cup is nothing more than a chance to add another trophy to the case. For Mexico, the Gold Cup offers redemption for the recent poor performances on the international stage.

I expect the two teams to be very evenly matched for the majority of the game. The United States are a patient team that waits for the right opportunity to present itself. This mentality has usually worked for the yanks.

Mexico plays a much different style of football. Depending on which team shows up, they try to move the ball around and try to create lots of chances with crosses. Giovani Dos Santos has been the undisputed MVP of the team this tournament, and I look for him to terrorize the young United States defense.

I think the X-factor in this game will be Guillermo Ochoa. Ochoa is one of the best keepers in the world, and I look for him to deny the U.S. strikers many times on Sunday.

Prediction

Without Tim Howard to bail them out, the United States will be on their heels for a lot of the game. Mexico will shoot themselves in the foot once or twice, which is what will keep this game close.

In the end, I think the play of the Mexican team has improved by leaps and bounds during the knockout stage. If they play like they did against Costa Rica and Guadeloupe, then Mexico should win comfortably.

However, if Mexico plays like they did against Nicaragua and Panama, the "C" team of the United States could steal this in a close one.

Anyway, I predict a 2-1 victory for Mexico. The game won't be as close as the scoreline suggests, but enough for the U.S. team to be proud of their performance.

Who Is the Greatest To Wear Manchester United's No. 7 Kit?

The number seven shirt of Manchester United carries one of the richest traditions a single number could carry.

From big names to even bigger talents, the number seven shirt has become very dear to the United fans.

While there is no official criteria for wearing the shirt, it is pretty obvious what is needed to do the number justice. The wearer must have buckets of talent and a captivating personality, both on and off the field.

I have decided to rank from "least to greatest" the players who have donned the legendary number seven kit. The list is made based on their services to Manchester United, not necessarily the best talent.

Begin Slideshow

Gold Cup Knockout Stage Predictions

The group stage of the Gold Cup has concluded with many story lines. Guadeloupe qualifies for the second straight Gold Cup tournament. The United States win their group despite having the "B" team out.

Mexico overcomes serious problems in the group stage to win their group. The CONCACAF Gold Cup now enters the knockout stage, where anything can happen.

These are my predictions for the rest of the tournament.
Begin Slideshow

Mexico-Panama Match a Disgrace to Football

We have full time at Reliant Stadium: 100, yes, 100 minutes of regulation have come to a conclusion.

The most disgraceful football match I have ever seen has just finished. Everything about the match put a black mark on CONCACAF and, in my eyes, football.

The fans. The officiating. The players. The coaching staff. Everything.

The match started off as a promising contest between two CONCACAF nations. Mexico opened the match on the right foot, scoring in the 10th minute by way of a Giovanni Dos Santos breakaway and subsequent pass to Miguel Sabah, who tucked home the easy goal.

Panama scored a goal in the 29th minute by way of terrible defending by the Mexicans. With the game tied 1-1, Panama resorted to the "anti-football." Yeah, the nine-man defense kind of football.

In the 47th minute, just half time, the game had yet another mark of embarrassment. Both Luis Miguel Noriega of Mexico and Armando Caballero of Panama were sent off for shoving each other. The game was now 10 on 10.

The second half started in the same boring fashion the first half had ended. With Mexico incapable of teamwork, Panama's nine-man defense made the CONCACAF powerhouse look like fools.

The game went completely out of control around the 78th minute. Shortly after coming on, R. Phillips was involved in a disgraceful altercation with Mexican manager Javier Aguirre.

Phillips was running down the touchline next to the Mexican bench when he had the ball knocked out of bounds by a Mexican player. Mexico manager Aguirre lifted his leg as Phillips ran by, kicking him in the process.

In disbelief, Phillips shoved the manager and returned to the field. The referee sent both Aguirre and Phillips off. Aguirre will most likely receive both a lofty fine and a lengthy ban.

The next 15 minutes that followed would be the most disgraceful in the history of football. Phillips refused to leave the pitch after being shown the red card. The benches cleared as every reserve, trainer, and coach from Panama stepped onto the pitch.

The referee never had control of the match as it seemed everyone had earned an argument with the referee. Phillips stayed on the pitch for almost five minutes complaining. He then stayed on for an additional five minutes with apparent fear of being pelted by the fans.

The fans spent the 10 minutes of chaos throwing bottles onto the pitch. The referee added 10 MINUTES of stoppage time because of the debacle.

Five of these 10 minutes were wasted by Blas Perez of Panama. He was lightly tackled by a Mexican defender and proceeded to feign an injury.

He was taken off on a stretcher, only to return to the game (illegally, I might add) three minutes later.

The match ended 1-1 with three players and one manager sent off, five yellow cards, and nearly 15 minutes of game time wasted because of complaining.

Panama disgraced football with their multiple offenses of feigning injuries and wasting time.

The fans disgraced football by throwing objects at players and onto the pitch.

The referee disgraced football by failing to control the game.

This match disgraced football.

Top 10 Footballers in the World

Behold, the list of the top ten footballers currently playing.

A lot of thought went into making this list. It was difficult to compare forwards to midfielders and midfielders to defenders, but in the end I am satisfied with my list.

There are obviously some players that deserve to be on the list, but in the end did not make the list. I'm sure the players I am talking about will get lots of love in the comments.

Without further introduction, I present to you my list of the top ten footballers in the world.
Begin Slideshow

The Legend Of Tim Tebow, Florida's Superman

In the world of sports, we tend to toss around words that acclaim players far too often. You all know what words I'm talking about. Beast, genius, "great," etc.

But, one of the words we don't use very often is legend. This is because we rarely stumble upon legends in sports. Much less college sports.

However, down here in sunny (and very hot) Gainesville, FL, we have ourselves a legend who is still playing the game that has made him famous.

His name is Tim Tebow, and he is a Florida legend.

Since the summer of his freshman year, the hype surrounding Tim Tebow was unreal. Who cared if we had Chris Leak? (who at the time was getting ready for his senior season and his fourth year of being the starting quarterback for the Gators), we had the super freshman Tim Tebow.

Of course we all loved Leak, but whenever Tebow came out onto the field, The Swamp went insane. Sometimes Ben Hill Griffin Stadium got so into Tebow Mania, we would boo the Florida coaching staff for taking him out. (We all remember the embarrasing night that we booed Chris Leak).

In the first game of the season against Southern Miss, Tim Tebow came into the game for Chris Leak early in the fourth quarter. Tebow scored on a one-yard touchdown run.

Ever wonder what it looks like when a legend is born?

Tebow was our super freshman, and he was the wild-card that put Florida above everyone else in 2006. Without Tebow in 2006, the Gators would not have made it to the national championship game.

Fast forward one year to Tebow's sophemore year and the talk of the sports world was: "Can Tim Tebow be a full time starter?"

Tim Tebow answered that question on his stat line. In 2007, Tebow amassed Godly numbers, earning 32 passing touchdowns and 23 rushing touchdowns (an SEC record.) Tim Tebow himself was involved in 55 Florida touchdowns. No player in college football could even touch that.

The legend of Tim Tebow grew when he became the first sophemore to win the Heisman trophy. The Tebow hype was at an all time high going into the 2008 season. With more super freshman arriving to help Superman, there was once again talk of a national championship here in Gainesville.

Tebow's hard work and leadership became a symbol of Florida football. His place as the unrivaled leader on the team was solidified during his post-game press conference after Florida's one point loss to Ole Miss at The Swamp.

In the often replayed speech, Tebow promised the Florida fans that nobody would play harder or try harder than the Florida Gators for the remainder of the season. Tebow's teammates rallied behind his promise and ripped off eight straight victories on their way to the SEC Championship game.

It was in this game where the legend of Time Tebow grew again.

The Gators were trailing the undefeated and No. 1 team in the nation, Alabama, 20-17 going into the fourth quarter.

The Gators, rather, Tim Tebow, responded with the best quarter of football in his life. Tebow drove the Gators to an early fourth quarter touchdown to give the Gators the lead 24-20.

Tebow immediately went to the sideline and began talking to his defense. You could see the fire in his eyes has he yelled at the defense "I did my job, now you do yours!"

His teammates responded by shutting out the undefeated Crimson Tide in the fourth quarter.

Tebow played a perfect game as the Gators won their first SEC championship with Tebow as their starter. The win would propel the Gators to the BCS National Championship game.

Jan. 8th, 2009. Miami, Fla. It is here where the legend of Tim Tebow reached its highest plateau.

The first half was a disaster for Tebow, as he threw two interceptions early in the game. It should be noted that Tebow had only thrown two interceptions the entire season, prior to the National Championship game.

The game was tied 14-14 early in the fourth quarter, after a Sam Bradford touchdown pass to Jermaine Gresham.

As he did in the SEC Championship game, Tim Tebow took over. But, this time, it was for all the marbles. The way Tebow ran the ball the rest of the game, was that of a man possessed.

Tim Tebow played harder than I thought was possible from a human. But, then again, he isn't human. He is Superman.

Tebow's outstanding fourth quarter clinched the National Championship for the Gators. The second for Tebow in a Gator uniform, his first as a starter.

Now, the legend of Tim Tebow is forever cemented at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. With his name in the stadium for his Heisman trophy, and his historic post-game speech now on a plaque on the stadium, Tebow's legacy has gone beyond original expectations. He is the greatest Gator ever.

Depending on what he does his senior season, he could become the greatest college football player ever.

But, in the eyes of Florida fans, we couldn't think any higher of him.

The 14 Greatest Rivalries in All Of Sports

Rivalries are what we breathe in sports. Being a fan of one team sometimes means you must hate another.

Rivalries are as old as competitive athletics themselves. In many rivalries, it isn't just the fans that hate each other. The players hate each other, the local newspapers hate each other, right down to the bandwagon fan who just became a fan.

Although, rivalries are not just about hate. They are about competition, teams who play each other well and hard. Teams who are constantly trading off championships and are constantly trying to catch one another's championship count.

I respect rivalries almost as much as I respect sports. Because of my fascination with rivalries, I have done some research and come up with a list of the greatest rivalries in all of sport.

Let it be known that this is in my own opinion, I know there are many other deserving rivalries...but I don't think the ones I left off can compare to these.

Tip of the hat to Oxford vs. Cambridge, The Sport of Blue

Through my long research, I learned that Oxford and Cambridge hold the honor of oldest recorded rivalry in all of sports. The sport of Blue is sort of a multi-sport competition that features many collegiate sports. Rowing, Swimming, Rugby, etc.

So let's all give them a round of applause as they have been competing with each other since before 1820.

14. Florida vs. Georgia, College Football

“The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party”

This game personifies what college football is. Florida and Georgia meet every year in Jacksonville, Florida, to crown the superior state. Fans flock from all over to engage in tailgating, much less the actual game.

This rivalry transcends the fans and goes onto the field. The Georgia players publicly announce their hatred for Gator players, and the Gator players do the same.

In 2007, Georgia head coach Mark Reicht threw gasoline onto the already burning rivalry, by telling his players to “be penalized for over celebration” after scoring their first touchdown of the game.

In 2008 the Gators responded with their play. Gator players mocked the Georgia defense at the end of the game by literally walking in the middle of a play.

13. Redskins vs. Cowboys, NFL

Of all the NFL rivalries that exist, the Redskins and Cowboys is one that has truly stood the test of time. Since its first days back in 1960, to last season’s matchup, the ‘Skins and ‘Boys have had bloody fights on the field.

Between the two teams are 31 division titles, 1- NFL championships and eight Super Bowl titles.

The hate is genuine between the two teams. Great names such as Landry, Gibbs, Staubach, Riggens, and Johnson ring through the infamous halls of this rivalry.

12. Internazionale Milan vs. AC Milan, Italian Serie A Football

“Derby Della Madonnina”

This particular Italian derby is one of the biggest in the entire world. Inter and AC Milan are two of the most recognized and respected football clubs in the world. It also helps that they are two of the most successful clubs in Italy.

The rivalry really kicked up in the 60’s during the “Mazzola and Rivera” years as the two clubs seemed to be trading off the European Cup every season. The two players, by which the era is named after, Sandro Mazzola (Inter) and Gianni Rivera (AC Milan), defined the rivalry with their own personal spat that even spewed onto the national team.

The two clubs are set to meet for the 271st time this season.

11. Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens, NHL

This is without a doubt the most brutal rivalry in the National Hockey League. The real tension between the two clubs stems from the rivalry of English-speaking Canadians (Toronto) and French-speaking Canadians (Montreal).

During the years of 1944-1978 the Maple Leafs and Canadiens met in the NHL playoffs 12 times and met in the Stanley Cup Finals five times.

Cup upsets and fan hatred is what fuels this rivalry today. The differences between the two cultures will forever keep this rivalry between two of the “original six” alive.

10. Ferrari vs. McLaren, F1

These two giants in Formula One racing have been competing at the top for decades. But, it was recently that this rivalry went “next level.”

In 2007, it was alleged that McLaren had stolen confidential technical information from Ferrari. Stealing from the enemy is one way to get a rivalry going.

McLaren has earned 162 race victories, eight constructors championships and 12 drivers championships.

Ferrari has 209 race victories, 16 constructors' championships and 15 drivers' championships. Ferrari is also famous for hiring legendary driver Michael Schumacher in 1996 for an unbelievable amount of $30 million a year. Schumacher won five drivers titles for Ferrari, and seven total in his career.

9. Auburn vs. Alabama, College Football

“The Iron Bowl”

The Auburn, Alabama rivalry in college football is the very definition of hatred—pure, unadulterated hatred. From Bear Bryant’s championship winning days at Alabama, to the more recent winning streak of Auburn (recently broken in tremendous fashion), the hatred between these two fan bases is unbelievable.

Many significant games with championship implications have taken place between these two. One of the more notable games in the long history of this rivalry was in 1994, when both teams came into The Iron Bowl undefeated. The 9-0 Alabama Crimson Tide defeated the 9-0-1 Auburn Tigers.

I would only attend this game as a neutral fan. Because picking a side would be like picking a religion at this game.

8. India vs. Pakistan, International Cricket

The Indian and Pakistan cricket teams are the most bitter rivals in the sport. When these two teams play, no other sport can match the kind of atmosphere it creates. Both sides expect success, and usually cannot cope with defeat.

A commentator at the 2003 Cricket World Cup had this to say about the rivalry: “There is always great interest in India and Pakistan for they have fought three wars. There has been no war since 1999. So there is much more excitement in this match.”

He’s not far from reality.

Because there are three different forms of cricket (Test, ODI, Twenty20), it is difficult to determine a dominant party. However, in ODI competitions, Pakistan holds a comfortable all-time lead over India, 68-45.

7. North Carolina vs. Duke, College Basketball

“The Battle of Tobacco Road”

The rivalry between these two instate universities is the toast of college basketball. Both schools boast some of the best teams to ever play college basketball, as well as some of the best players.

The consistent classics these two teams produce are really makes this rivalry tick. Because these two teams are always among the top teams in college basketball, their late season meetings can often offer memorable finishes. These teams deliver a show every game.

The two universities are only eight miles apart from each other. Their funding also creates more tension between the two schools, as North Carolina is a state university, and Duke is a private university.

Their biannual match up in 2004 was the most watched game in college basketball history.

6. Michigan vs. Ohio State, College Football

“The Game”

Hands down the greatest rivalry in college football. These universities have met 105 times. Their rivalry started in 1897, with Michigan demolishing Ohio State 36-0. Michigan dominated the early years of the rivalry, as Ohio State did not get a win over their rivals until 1919.

The two universities boast large individual player honors as well as team honors. Between the two teams are 18 national titles, ten Heisman trophy winners, and a combined win count of 1,680.

One of the more intense times of the rivalry is known as the “Ten Year War” in which coaches Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler assembled some of the strongest teams the rivalry had ever seen.

In 2006 the two teams came into The Game 11-0 and were ranked #1 and #2, respectively, in the nation. It was called the game of the century and it certainly lived up to the bill. Ohio State triumphed 42-39, to earn a spot in the National Championship game.

The year college football dies, is the year Michigan and Ohio State do not play.

5. Manchester United vs. Liverpool, English Premiership Football

Manchester United and Liverpool are the two most successful clubs in English football. Both clubs are tied for the most English league championships at 18.

The hatred between the two clubs sometimes defines English football. Both clubs have fans worldwide, which is what propels this rivalry above their respective local rivalries.

The two fan bases are so ruthless to one another that each often sing chants about one another’s “soft spots.” For Manchester United it is the horrible Munich air disaster of 1958, and for Liverpool it is the tragic Hillsborough disaster of 1989.

The past two years Chelsea FC have knocked out Liverpool in the Champions League semifinals and quarterfinals. Because Manchester United won their semifinal in both 2008 and 2009, I thank Chelsea for this service. Because a Manchester United vs. Liverpool European Championship would mean World War III.

The players recognize the rivalry, many claiming it “the biggest game of the season.”

When Manchester United and Liverpool meet, it is best to pick a side…because there is no such thing as a neutral to these glorious fan bases.

4. Real Madrid vs. Barcelona, Spanish Primera Division Football

“El Clasico”

This rivalry is between the two biggest clubs, and cities, in Spain. But, like the Maple Leafs and Canadiens rivalry, it represents something deeper than sports. Real Madrid represents “Spanish pride,” while Barcelona represents “Catalonian pride.”

Real Madrid leads the rivalry with an all-time record of 68 wins, compared to Barcelona’s 60 wins.

While the two clubs are bitter rivals, they often have players transfer from one club to the other. These transfers often cause unrest among the fans.

The greatest matches between the two clubs came in 1960 and 1961, when they met for the European Championship. Real Madrid won in ‘60, and Barcelona won in ‘61.

The two teams are guaranteed two meetings every year in La Liga, but sometimes can meet in European competition as well as domestic cup competition. As it is with most rivalries, the next game is always the biggest.

3. Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees, Major League Baseball

Of all the rivalries I have listed, this is probably the only one that stands despite a large gap in legacy. The Yankees boast 26 World Series titles, while the Red Sox are far behind with seven.

This rivalry is hands down the biggest in North America. The bitterness between the two fan bases is legendary. This is due to the fact that while the Yankees were winning multiple world champion titles, the Red Sox were suffering from “The Curse of the Bambino.”

Since the curse has been broken in 2004, the Red Sox have, in some people’s opinion, surpassed the Yankees in terms of ability. The rivalry has reached a boiling point.

The rivalry is so intense that even the players hate each other. Whether the dug out is cleared or because a Red Sox player “sells out” to the Yankees, there is some real animosity in the clubhouses of these teams.

You can always expect a thrilling match when the Sox and Yanks play.

2. Boca Juniors vs. River Plate, Argentine Primera Division Football

“Superclasico”

It has been dubbed the Super Derby by its fans. As the two clubs are the most successful in Argentina. They are also the most supported clubs in Argentina. According to statistics, combined, they both claim more than 70% of Argentina’s fan base.

Since its founding near La Boca docks in 1905, Boca Juniors has largely been seen as the club of the working class, while River Plate has been seen as the club of the upper class.

What sets this rivalry apart from all the others is the unmatched passion in the stands. I will sit here and say that no atmosphere at a football match can equal that of the Superclasico.

In fact, choosing a side in this derby isn’t like religion, it IS religion.

The two clubs have met an astonishing 323 times. With Boca leading River Plate in the all-time record 118 to 104, with 101 draws.

1. Celtic vs. Rangers, Scottish Premier League Football

“Old Firm”

The Old Firm is the greatest rivalry in the history of sports. Celtic and Rangers both play in Glasgow, Scotland. They both represent two very different ideals. The game is more than a football match, it pits religion, politics, and opposing social attitudes against each other.

Rangers is seen as a Protestant club with Unionist and Loyalist supporters, while Celtic is seen as a Catholic club with Republican and Nationalist supporters.

The players of the clubs also feel the rivalry as in the 120 year history of the derby, only five players have ever switched clubs.

In 1980 The Old Firm was host to the most despicable brawl known to sport, as 9,000 supporters fought on the pitch after Celtic’s 1-0 victory. Between the two clubs are 94, I repeat, 94 league titles. Rangers hold 52, Celtic hold 42.

The two rivals have met an unmatched 383 times. Rangers holds the most wins with 152, Celtic have 139.

Top Five Reasons the Orlando Magic Lost the Finals

The NBA finals came to a close Sunday night when the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Orlando Magic 99-86 in Game Five. The Lakers won the series 4-1.

The Magic were not dominated in any way, despite the series record. There were a few key things the Magic did not do to beat the Lakers, and also a few things the Lakers did to keep the Magic from claiming the title.

Here are my top five reasons the Orlando Magic lost four of the five games that were played.

5. J.J. Redick and Courtney Lee did not have balanced minutes

Of all the reasons, this is probably the least obvious. Going into The Finals, everyone knew the massive mismatch between Kobe Bryant and Courtney Lee.

This mismatch was exploited in Game One when Kobe made Lee look like the dazed and confused rookie he really was.

In the Boston Celtics series, J.J. Redick had successfully defended Ray Allen and kept him from having big games, something Allen had managed regularly in the previous series against the Chicago Bulls.

Redick did not play any significant time in the Cleveland series—though Redick rarely plays against the Cavaliers, for unknown reasons.

Stan Van Gundy knew that Kobe would not be able to be contained, and therefore had to give him different defenders so he couldn't get comfortable. This is something he did not do all series.

When Redick was in against the Lakers, he was an effective offensive player, but even better on defense. If he had played maybe 10 more minutes in each game, I am sure the Magic would have had both better ball movement on offense and better defense.

4. Jameer Nelson played too many minutes

Yes, that's right, I believe Jameer Nelson played too many minutes. Rather, he played too many crucial minutes. I think it was a mistake in general for him to play in this series, as he made no impact in the outcome.

Alston had been playing brilliantly throughout the playoffs, as well as Anthony Johnson, so there really was no need for him to play.

Nelson's rhythm was off, and it took him until around game four to get in real sync with the rest of his team. That's four games too late if you want to win a championship.

3. The Magic did not shoot three-pointers well

This is obvious. The Magic have a reputation of being a strong three-point shooting team. They always have at least four shooters on the court at all times. Many of them are top class shooters.

The Lakers did not defend the three-point line particularly well, which gave the Magic between seven to 10 good looks in each game. The Magic really failed to hit their threes.

Mikael Pietrus was the glaring failure in the series. He was such a dominant outside shooter in the Eastern Conference Finals, that it baffled me to see him shoot so poorly in the NBA Finals.

Hedo Turkoglu shot about average from the three-point line. Rashard Lewis, shot below his high standard, besides his amazing performance in game two.

2. Hedo Turkoglu did not move the ball

Of all the things the Magic did wrong in this series, this is probably the most annoying and frustrating mistake of them all.

Hedo Turkoglu simply does not move the ball well, in any sense of the word. Whenever he becomes the ball handler on offense, the entire Magic offense slows down.

He works off of only pick and rolls. This usually works well for the Magic, but the Lakers completely shut these down and forced Turkoglu to either A) take bad shots, or B) turn the ball over.

A lot of people try to pin this on Van Gundy, but Turkoglu has to realize when the game plan isn't working and needs to change it on the court.

1. Phil Jackson knew exactly how to beat Dwight Howard

I really feel like going into the series, Phil Jackson knew exactly how to stop Dwight Howard, therefore did not worry about him very much.

We all know Dwight Howard is the best defensive big man on the planet, nothing you can do about that. But, we all know that offensively, Dwight Howard is limited to dunks and put backs.

What did Jackson do about this? He had his players literally swarm to Dwight Howard whenever he got the ball. Because Howard always puts the ball on the floor before making a move to the basket, Howard was always harassed on his way up and was either sent to the foul line or stripped of the ball. Unfortunately for the Magic, it was usually the latter.

Jackson also counted on Howard trying to dominate inside, and instead, let Howard beat his own team by constantly turning the ball over.

If Dwight Howard had passed back out on more than half of the touches he got, I am certain that I would be writing a preview for Game Six, instead of an article on why the Magic lost.

Final words

In the end the Lakers were always the superior team. The Magic had the talent and ability to win two more games and possibly the whole series, but the Lakers had better coaching (not just Phil Jackson) and smarter players.

The Magic really went away from their team oriented approach as a lot of the Magic star players seemed to try and win it all by themselves. The Magic allowed the Lakers control every aspect of the game.

The Magic have a promising future as long as Dwight Howard commits himself to becoming a better offensive player and the Magic keep some key players. Hedo Turkoglu has already decided to become a free agent, which is a pretty good blow to the Magic, but not a fatal one.

As long as Mikael Pietrus stays, he can replace Turkoglu. Courtney Lee is a rookie with a ton of upside to him. Rashard Lewis is still in his prime, and Jameer Nelson will be healthy next year.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers on a great series and even better season. Keep the trophy clean for us, will you?

Green Bay Packers Spotlight: Donald Driver

Welcome friends to the second edition of Packers Spotlight.

This edition of Packers Spotlight is brought to you by the Association of Fearless Receivers.

Donald Driver is entering his 11th season as a professional football player. He is a careerlong Packer since being drafted by the organization in 1999.

Driver's career with the Packers is distinguished in almost everyway. He has won the hearts of fans with his fearless route running and complete disregard for his own well being. Driver has also won the pages of the Packers record books as he quickly moves up in various receiving records.

Despite being a member of the Packers since 1999, it took until 2004 for him to really break out into the dominant receiver he is today.

Driver currently has a total of five 1,000 receiving yard seasons, which ties James Lofton and Sterling Sharpe's franchise record.

Driver also owns a handful of Lambeau Field receiving records.

What I like about Driver...

Donald Driver is not only an excellent football player, but he is an even better person off the field. Fans often tell stories of the time he spent with them during his free time. Driver touches the hearts of many fans and the NFL should be very appreciative of the image he sets for the league.

I also like that Driver is reaching the back end of his career, but he is not showing signs of slowing down. He remains as dominant as ever. His ability to lose defenders in the open field is as good, if not better, than it was in his twenties.

He truly is a fearless receiver. Driver runs slants all day, and his toughness has been invaluable to the Packers over the years.

What he could improve on...

This is tough, I really had to think about this one. I suppose Driver tends to let a lot of passes clank off his hands. Granted the majority of his career he was being thrown Favre bullets.

Either way, I couldn't take it when I saw him take his eyes off the ball.

This is only a minor problem as Driver only does this maybe once a game.

Thanks for reading this edition of Packers Spotlight.

Next Week I will feature the NFL's first actual bear. Of course I am talking about AJ Hawk.

LeBron James Is Overrated

Yes, you read that right. I think LeBron James is overrated.

I still think he is one of the top five players in the NBA, but to say he is as good as Kobe Bryant or Chris Paul is stretching it.

Why do I think he is overrated?

Well, for starters, his basketball skills only derive from his unnatural size. Like Dwight Howard, he has one of the most athletic frames I have ever seen, therefore it is very easy for him to take advantage of it and score.

Kobe Bryant is not a huge player and cannot take advantage of the same athletic ability of LeBron James. Yet, he still is able to win MVPs and carry a team just like LeBron James.

When I watch LeBron James, I am usually not impressed. I will admit he has a pretty good jump shot, but that only accounts for half of his "other worldly game."

We all know LeBron's bread and butter: driving the lane. It is from here that I draw my argument.

When James goes to the hole, he simply runs at defenders full speed and hopes to get fouls called.

This is done after taking 15 seconds off the shot clock deciding what he wants to do.

In the series against the Magic, in the fourth quarter, I noticed that the Cleveland Cavaliers stopped being a team, and just turned it over to James. He takes up the entire shot clock to drive and try to get a foul.

If LeBron James did not take 20 to 30 shots a game, he would not be considered anywhere near as good as he is now.

NBA players are so talented, that if anybody took 20 shots a game, he would have around 28 points.

A player is only as productive as his team lets him. The Cavs turn their team to him and that is how he gets his numbers.

Of course, the same could be said about the best player on all other teams, but none of those players are as unnaturally big and fast as LeBron James.

The media have also helped to "campaign" for LeBron as a top player. For example, his game two-winning three-point shot was amazing, but because it was "King James" who scored it, it is him just being LeBron. I wonder if Mo Williams had hit that shot if it would have been considered half as great.

To sum it up, LeBron James is a superb athlete in which the NBA has never seen, but it is because of that that his stats are ridiculous.

Whether it is holding the ball the entire shot clock, taking 30 shots a game, or running right at the gut of Dwight Howard trying to get fouls called, LeBron James' basketball talent is overrated.

He has been created by the media as "King James," a title which he probably deserves, taking only the Cavs' roster into consideration. But James will never be better than Michael Jordan, or Magic Johnson, or Kobe Bryant—simply because his body gives him an advantage none of those players ever had.

Manchester United-Barcelona: The Match of the Millennium

Seldom in sports do we get to see a match in which both teams are not only playing for a trophy, but for a place in history.

Manchester United, winner of three trophies this year, are searching for the first Quadruple since 1968, when Celtic pulled it off.

Barcelona, winner of a double already, are searching for the first European Treble since 1999, when Manchester United ripped it from the hands of Bayern Munich.

Historical significance aside, the actual players on the pitch are among the very best in the world. Barcelona and Manchester United have amassed "super teams" stacked with talent from all around the world.

At striker, Barcelona and Manchester United boast two of the most unconventional and versatile players at the position: Barca with Thierry Henry and United with Wayne Rooney.

Both midfields consist of players who control the very pace of the game at will. Xavi and Andres Iniesta are superstars for Barcelona, while Michael Carrick and Ji Sung Park command midfield for United.

The back four of each team are led by strong captains—Rio Ferdinand for Manchester United and Carlos Puyol for Barca.

Have I mentioned that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are on the pitch?

Ronaldo and Messi are, by the majority opinion, the two best footballers on the planet. Their skill and ability to impact a game like no other have made them the early front runners for next year's FIFA World Player of the Year.

Messi, the man who has been touted to surpass Diego Maradona.

Ronaldo, the man who has already broken the record of a past United great, George Best.

It is likely that we will never see a match with this much star power, with this much historical significance, for a long time.

The world will watch on May 27 as the Match of the Millennium kicks off.

Here are the key matchups that will make this truly a match for the ages.

Cristiano Ronaldo v. Lionel Messi

I don't think I really need to elaborate on this one. The two best players facing off in a Champions League final? What more could you ask for? Will Messi deny Ronaldo eternal glory? Or will Ronaldo keep Messi at second best?

The United back four v. the Barcelona attack

This is the true test for the heralded defense of Manchester United—a true test for Nemanja Vidic and Ferdinand, with players like Henry, Messi, and Samuel Eto'o pressuring them all day. It is likely one mistake could cost United the trophy.

Xavi and Iniesta v. Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes

This will probably decide the match. Both pairs of midfield maestros will do anything to control the center of the pitch.

Xavi and Iniesta are usually at the focal point of every Barcelona attack. Or as Tommy Smyth put it, "Everything good for Barcelona usually comes from Iniesta or Xavi."

Carrick is the unsung hero of United's trophy haul, while Scholes is the legend on the pitch.

Whoever controls the pace at midfield will probably win the game.

Wherever you are on May 27, be sure to tune into a one of a kind match.

The Match of the Millennium.

If Only: My Sit Down with Greg Jennings

Greg Jennings used to be that short receiver coming out of a small school that everyone is unsure about. Jennings is 5'11" and was coming out of Western Michigan University. Coming into the draft everyone knew he had talent, specifically he hand hands. But many teams were reluctant to draft him because of his small stature.

Packers General Manager Ted Thompson took the chance on Jennings by taking him in the second round, 52nd overall, in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Fast forward four years and Greg Jennings is a pro-bowl caliber receiver who has amassed 2,844 receiving yards and 24 touchdown receptions.

Jennings has become one of my favorite players fast, and I have many questions I would love to hear him answer.

1. Tell me what it was like preparing for the draft?

2. Being a smaller wide receiver, it must have been tough getting the attention of the scouts with 6'4" people jumping around. What did you do to get noticed?

3. On draft day, did you have any particular team you wanted to play for?

4. When you heard you were drafted by Green Bay, what was your very first thought?

5. Your feelings on Brett Favre prior to being drafted are notorious in Green Bay, how did he change the way you felt about him?

6. As a rookie in 2006, you led the league in receiving yards during the preseason. Did this help your confidence going into the regular season?

7. You have caught a number of historic passes from Brett Favre, which one is your favorite? (400th TD pass, 420th TD pass, 421st TD pass, 82 yd TD pass in OT vs. the Broncos in 2007).

8. Can you tell me what your second year in the NFL was like compared to your first?

9. In 2007 you burst onto the scene nearly getting 1,000 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. Did you expect this kind of production?

10. What is your favorite win? At any level?

11. Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers?

12. Do you prefer deep routes where you can make a play for your quarterback? Or shorter routes where you can make a move in the open field?

13. Is there any significance in your number, 85?

14. Do you see yourself a Green Bay Packer for the rest of your career?

15. Describe what a normal off season day for you is like.

16. Does practicing against two of the best cornerbacks in the league, in Charles Woodson and Al Harris, give you an advantage over other receivers in the league?

17. Green Bay in the winter? Your thoughts?

18. Last question Greg, 2008 was a down year for the Packers, what do you have to do as an individual to make sure it doesn't happen again?

The 10 Worst Sports Personalities on TV

A few days ago I wrote an article listing, in my opinion, the ten best personalities on T.V.

Of course, I feel obligated to let you know who I think are the worst sports personalities on T.V.

The names on this list are here for a number of reasons. Unhidden bias, bigotry, and the complete inability to accept that your peers know as much as you do.

This is the dishonorable list.
Begin Slideshow

Green Bay Packers: Masters Of the Play Action

In this article I am supposed to list and decipher the top five plays the Packers used last year.

Well, the Packers went 6-10 for a reason. They didn't have five effective plays last year.

So instead of lying to you, I will break down the one successful play the Packers used last year, and its five options.

Packers fans know exactly which play I am talking about. The play action bootleg.

Aaron Rodgers is a young Brett Favre, is mobile, and can fire a bomb down field. It is for this reason head coach Mike McCarthy uses the play action so much, mostly in the form of bootlegs.

The Play Action Bootleg

For this particular play, the Packers usually come out in a single back set. Sometimes, McCarthy has the fullback in an offset position. This is usually done if the play is made for Rodgers to get rid of the ball quicker than usual.

The wide receivers can be in different positions, depending on field position. For my particular example, there will be a three wide set with the X receiver lined up to the far sideline and the slot receiver lined up on the same side as the Z receiver. Finally, the tight end is lined up on the line of scrimmage, but is motioned by Rodgers to the opposite side.

When Rodgers snaps the ball, the play will run just like a running play and flow to the opposite side of the actual play.

After Rodgers has successfully completed the play action, he begins to run the bootleg and this is where the play breaks into five options.

1) Go Deep to the Z Receiver

This is the most common decision made by Rodgers, as he often sells the play action to perfection.

The Z receiver, often Greg Jennings, but sometimes Donald Driver, runs either a post or a flag route. Rodgers looks here first since it's usually available to him.

When watching highlights of the 2008 Packers, this play is seen most often.

This route is usually 25-plus yards.

2) Short Pass to Tight End

Rodgers didn't exercise this option too often in 2008, but with the improvement of the tight ends, look for him to use it more in 2009.

In this play the tight end usually provides blocking for the first second or two of the play, and he'll often stay if there is a blitz.

Once the play action has been completed, and if there is no blitz, the tight end slips into the linebackers and mirrors Rodgers' movement.

If Rodgers gets in trouble, the tight end has the responsibility of coming back to help.

This route is usually five to 10 yards.

3) Outside Slant to Slot Receiver

The slot receiver has one of the most important roles in the play action bootleg. He must gain separation from his corner faster than everyone else because he is the most effective route on the field.

James Jones or Jordy Nelson are usually lined up here. They are deceptively quick and very good at losing their man.

If Rodgers has time, and doesn't have the deep ball, he will often fire a pass to the sideline for the slot receiver.

This route is usually 10 to 15 yards.

4) Deep Ball to X Receiver

The most unused option by Rodgers in the 2008 season. Mostly because his other three options were open.

The X receiver runs a deep post route. In the event the defense is running a cover two, this receiver is almost always open. Rodgers has been known to force the deep ball on this option a few times, but not penalized often.

This route is often 15 to 30 yards.

5) Tuck It and Run

Granted, it is likely the Packers have specific play actions in which this is the first option for Rodgers, rather than last. However, for this example we will assume it is the last option.

If nothing is open and he has room, Rodgers will take off and get as many yards as he can.

Other Variations Of the Play Action

While the bootleg is the most effective play action for the Packers, McCarthy also implements a number of different plays that found success in 2008.

For example, in one such variation the offense lines up in an offset "I" formation with an X and Z receiver on both sides of the field.

Rodgers runs a quick play action and either passes to the Z receiver which is running a quick slant, or he passes to the X receiver who is running a hook route.

McCarthy loves to put motion in his play action plays, which is why the majority of the play action plays have motion. Often it involves a receiver spreading the secondary thin, or a tight end forcing the linebackers to move in.

The motion is often very effective in getting Rodgers' options open.

The Quarterback Sneak

I wrestled with the decision to include this play, but I suppose the Packers had lots of success with this play in short yardage situations.

The Packers quarterback sneak is not your average quarterback sneak. Rodgers often calls a tight end or H-back in motion to the side he will be diving.

Rodgers then follows the left guard into the end zone or wherever the play was designed to go.

Given that the quarterback sneak is starting to see diminished success all around the football world, it is comforting to see the Packers have developed a play with a very high success rate.
